Dixie Highway – Crete Until the late 1890s, roads were considered by many to be a local responsibility.

The supervision of the roads often fell to elected officials, but the basic maintenance was left up to local residents.

The United States government also took a more active role in road development and in 1893, created the Office of Public Road Inquires to help advise state and local officials on the best methods of improving roads.

Although the push for improved roads became popular in the late 19th century, the real impetus for improved roads came with the development of the automobile.

After 1908, when Henry Ford’s new assembly line made his Model-T more affordable to a large number of Americans, the demand would fade if there were no reliable roads to use.

To address the need for improved roads for automobiles, an alliance of highway supports, auto trade associations, and others supported a network of national roads.

The most famous of these roads was the Lincoln Highway, which would connect the east and west coasts of the United States.

Established in 1913, the Lincoln Highway stretches from Times Square, New York City, to the shadow of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Envisioned by Carl Graham Fisher, the Lincoln Highway is the world’s largest memorial to President Abraham Lincoln.

Fisher was an entrepreneur involved with manufacturing headlights for automobiles; he developed the idea of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and owned it with partners; he drove the first pace car for the Indianapolis 500 in 1911; and he was an early promoter of Miami Beach in Florida.

Fisher also became a champion of America’s first north-to-south interstate paved road, known as the Dixie Highway.

He desired a reliable route for his friends and others to drive south from Michigan to Florida. At the south end of the Dixie Highway in Miami, Florida, Fisher got involved in the successful real estate development of the new resort city of Miami Beach.

Selecting its north-south route was on the top of their agenda, but it did become a politicized task. Chicago, Illinois, was originally the northern terminus, but after Michigan joined the DHA, alternative routes were considered.

During the debate, Georgia’s representatives, and others, proposed the idea that western and eastern divisions of the Dixie Highway were warranted. Soon, the idea of a single route highway was abandoned, and instead, the Dixie Highway soon developed as a network system of major divisions and connecting routes from Sault Ste.

From the beginning, the largest problem facing the DHA was a lack of funding.

This would mean that every county on the proposed route had to fund, pave and maintain its section of the roadway.

In 1916, Congress passed the Federal Aid Road Act, which offered federal grants for state rural roads. This act would help those states, which would match the federal funding and also create a state highway department to oversee the spending of funds.

Once the Dixie Highway was completed, anyone with a car could head south for a summer or winter vacation. So popular was the highway that many local entrepreneurs opened gas stations, garages, restaurants, souvenir shops and roadside produce stands for the traveling public.

The Dixie Highway ceased to exist by name in 1926, when state and federal highway officials replaced named roadways with numbered highways.

KIDZFEST FULL OF FUN FOR ALL Families attend annual summer event in downtown Joliet

Chicago Street was blocked off Saturday from Jefferson Street to Benton Street as hundreds of families attended the annual KidzFest.

“There’s enough stuff for everyone to do,” said Natalie Dober, 9, of Plainfield, who attended with her mother, Ann Marie Dober. “It’s good for kids of all [ages].”

Within minutes of arriving at the event, Natalie had her face painted with a watermelon design, received

a balloon necklace, bounced in the Joliet Slammers inflatable jump area and climbed into the turret of the Joliet Police Department’s armored truck for a photo.

“But her favorite thing has been the snow cone,” her mother said.

KidzFest, which began in 2005, is a free event geared toward children ages 2 to 12, “where they can play, explore, imagine and create,” according to information provided by the Joliet City Center Partnership.

Exhibition space was free for any booth that had an interactive activity and those selling refreshments paid a

vendor fee.

The Joliet Cyborgs offered a chance to “drive” a robot that resembled a Mars rover and could launch a foam ball. Some yellow Minions, Chuck E. Cheese and Raphael of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles waved and posed for pictures. If the amphibian martial artist had moved a block to the north, he could’ve watched a tae kwon do demonstration.

Kids could win prizes playing hopscotch, hula hooping or participating in a version of Candyland. The Joliet fire and police departments had several vehicles on display.

Lewis University set up a satellite campus in the parking lot across from the Rialto Square Theatre that featured basketball and exhibits on geology, broadcasting and aviation.

Kids were recorded doing a mock weather report on camera, and others signed up for a flight simulator computer to practice landing on an aircraft carrier.

A small plane where young children could sit in the cockpit was probably the busiest photo spot of the event.

Dougall home could go cheap, but who’s buying?

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The historic Dougall home could go as cheap as $650 if it makes it to a Sept. 12 county auction.

But it’s the repair costs that buyers, as well as city officials, will worry about – if anyone buys the house.

The 19th century home of Dr. William Dougall, a historic local figure who commanded a regiment of black soldiers fighting for the Union during the Civil War, is in such bad shape that the city had been seeking to demolish it before preservationists began urging alternatives.

At the July meeting of the Joliet Historic Preservation Commission, several people in attendance urged the commission and city to let the house go to auction. The commission, which has some influence on the future of the house since it is in a historic district of Joliet, tabled a vote on a demolition certificate a second time and will next meet Aug. 24.

Not only is the city looking to demolish the house at 209 Union St., but the house failed to attract interest in a previous auction at which a buyer could have picked it up by paying only the roughly $20,000 in back taxes owed on the property.

“The investors who buy these things passed on this,” said Alfredo Melesio, the city’s director of neighborhood services.

aschier@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A man and woman were pronounced dead late Saturday night after emergency crews were called to a house fire near the Joliet-Plainfield border. The fire appears to have been accidental.

The Joliet Fire Department was dispatched at 10:37 p.m. Saturday to the home in the 2900 block of Sun Valley Court in Joliet, according to department Battalion Chief Laroy Aldridge. The residence has a Plainfield mailing address but is in Joliet city limits.

When firefighters arrived at the house, a person who was found to be a basement tenant was at the driveway and told responders there were two people inside, Aldridge said.

Crews found a man on the first floor who was pronounced dead at 11:50 p.m. at the scene, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office. A woman found on the second floor was taken to the emergency room of Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, where she was pronounced dead on arrival at 11:30 p.m.

Firefighters found smoke and fire on the first floor, but Aldridge said the damage was moderate and contained to the living room. Responders extinguished the fire in five minutes.

Joliet Chief of Police Brian Benton said in a statement that a preliminary investigation indicates the cause of the fire was accidental, possibly due to candles burning in the home.

The final cause and manner of the deaths is pending autopsy, toxicological and police reports, according to the Coroner’s Office. Autopsies for both victims are scheduled for Monday.

The home’s basement tenant was not injured and refused medical care, Aldridge said.

That may be a price someone would be willing to pay given the high price of repairs that would come with the house.

Those costs were estimated at anywhere between $60,000 to $100,000 or maybe more at the July meeting of the

commission.

“There are people interested, but they may want to wait until the auction,” Candace Johnson, a Joliet resident who is among those who want to see the house saved, told the commission.

The meeting was attended by several people, even out-of-towners, who showed interest in the building. But money is the issue.

“I hope you let it go to auction,” said Joliet resident Mary Beth Gannon, who added she knows of two unnamed people interested in the house.

Although the house appears to be headed to the Will County Delinquent Tax Auction on Sept. 12, there is still a plan to proceed with demolition – possibly even if the house is sold. Melesio has made it clear that the city wants to see a realistic action plan for the house.

He asked that potential buyers contact him, but so far only has heard from Barb Newberg, a city planner who also serves as the liaison to the preservation commission. Newberg said she might buy the house.

“I’d like to see somebody purchase the property and turn it into something viable,” Melesio said. “We’ve all been waiting a long time for that to happen.

Absent that, we have a responsibility to remove blight.”

LOCAL BRIEFS Tinley Park pilot dies in Minooka glider crash

MINOOKA – A Tinley Park man died Saturday in Minooka when the glider he was piloting crashed into a field.

The incident happened about 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Chicago Glider Club, located on West Airport Road, according to Will County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Tom Budde.

James M. Patton, 69, was pronounced dead at 5:30 p.m. at the scene, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office, National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the incident.

NTSB spokesman Peter Knudson said the crash occurred shortly after the glider detached from its tow plane.

FAA spokesman Lynn Lunsford stated via email that preliminary information indicates the glider detached not long after takeoff. Knudson said an NTSB investigator would be on scene Sunday.

A preliminary incident report is expected in one to two weeks and it will take six to 12 months to complete the investigation,

he said. Patton’s final cause and manner of death is pending autopsy, toxicological and police reports, according to the Coroner’s Office. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

Iowa man dies after workplace fall in Crest Hill

A construction worker died Sunday morning after suffering a fall in Crest Hill.

Fernando V. Gamez, 42, of Souix City, Iowa, was pronounced dead at 10:51 a.m. at the emergency room of Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office.

Gamez had been working in the 21000 block of Division Street in Crest Hill when he fell, according to the Coroner’s Office.

Final cause and manner of death is pending autopsy, police and toxicological reports.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.

The Crest Hill Police Department and Occupational Safety & Health Administration are investigating.

Channahon treasure hunt leads to the family Channahon resident Ron Offerman recently found out just how small the world really is when he was treasure hunting in the yard of an old, vacant home in South Wilmington.

Ron is an avid treasurer hunter, he’s been doing it for nearly 28 years.

He likes to hunt farm fields and old homesteads. He belongs to the Will County Historical Research and Recovery Association.

His hunts have found him all sorts of interesting things, such as a belt plate from the Indian wars of 1890 while on a family trip to Oklahoma. He’s found presidential tokens from the Andrew Jackson, Millard Fillmore and Franklin Pierce campaigns.

The things he treasures the most are those that have a history, and part of what he enjoys doing after making a discovery is to research the item as thoroughly as possible.

“I love the history, I try to research everything I find,” Ron said.

“I love to know the story behind the item if I can.”

He came across a merchant’s token for Bottino Brothers dry goods

VIEWS Kris Stadalsky store earlier this summer in the South Wilmington yard. Merchant’s tokens, sometimes called “good fors” were used like we might use a coupon today.

The token was good for 50 cents off merchandise at either Bottino store, in South Wilmington or Brooklyn, Illinois.

Ron’s curiosity and love of history had him wondering about the Bottino Brothers stores, which no longer exist.

His daughter, Stephanie Offerman, and her boyfriend, Wally Cacello, live in South Wilmington, where Wally grew up. Ron went to Wally to see if he had heard of the Bottino brothers.

The coin’s story couldn’t have been more perfect.

It turned out that Frank Bottino was Wally’s great, great grandfather.

The stores were very successful

in their day and the brothers even opened a saloon later on.

“To find a token involved with family is a find of a lifetime,” Ron said. “It could have been just another token that went into my book.

The find itself was average, but it was the story behind the find.”

Just getting permission to search the South Wilmington homestead was a stroke of luck.

Ron had stopped at a home across from the vacant property to ask who owned it. As luck would have it, the woman at the house was the owner and she grew up in the now-vacant home.

The woman recognized the name on the license plate of the van Ron was driving – Treasures, which is not only his hobby but his wife Linda’s maiden name. The homeowner was familiar with Linda’s relatives in Gardener.

Ron was so excited about his string of good fortune – all the coincidences, the history of the coin, the family connection – that he wrote his story and submitted it to Western & Eastern Treasures magazine.

Linda brought in the mail just recently and set it on the counter. Ron

picked up the magazine, which had been face down, and recognized his own photo holding the merchant’s token on the cover of Western & Eastern’s September issue. The magazine ran not only his story, but all eight of the photos he submitted.

“I was astounded and shocked,” he said. “I didn’t even know they would print my article.”

Through the Cacello family, Ron was able to get ahold of two photos of the Bottino brothers in front of their store.

He had the photos and the token framed, and returned it to Wally’s father, Jack Cacello, the great grandson of Frank Bottino.

Ron’s neighbor, Ed Zugel, loves to hear about the treasurers that Ron finds, which is how the story made its way to me.

Ron and I have something in common. He’s always looking for a good treasure, he told me.

And I’m always looking for that treasure to share with the world.

Angie Sanchez embraced life with openness

Two simple words. An everlasting memory for the Sanchez family.

On July 26, Angie Sanchez, 30, of Joliet, suddenly passed away. Her mother, Debbie Robertson, had cared for Angie since 2007 when Angie had two strokes shortly after the birth of her son, Jose, now 9.

Debbie didn’t understand the details. She only knew Angie had pregnancy complications, which produced blood clots and caused the strokes.

When Angie woke up, she looked at her younger sister, Annabel Sanchez, of Joliet, now 22, and said, “Taco Bell.”

When the sisters were little girls, “Taco Bell” was Angie’s nickname for Annabel, Debbie said.

It meant Angie would live.

Debbie said she dismissed recommendations from health care providers to consider a nursing home for Angie.

The rationale, Debbie said, was that Angie “would be like a newborn all over again, in her body and in her

“I said, ‘She’s coming home with her mother,’ ” Debbie said. “I’ve been taking care of my daughter since the day she was born.”

As a baby, Angie was giggly and lovable, two traits intact even after the strokes affected Angie’s ability to think, talk and reason as she had in the past. Angie now found joy in daily

life. She delighted in her favorite TV shows – cartoons, wrestling matches, the Cubs’ baseball games and the soap opera “Days of Our Lives,” Debbie said.

“She couldn’t talk, but she could point to objects in the room to tell me what she wanted,” Debbie said.

Angie loved her schnauzer, Pier – who slept on her bed – as well as playing catch with Jose using her one good hand. Debbie said Jose always kissed his mother before and after school and at bedtime.

“I always wanted her to feel her son was there for her,” Debbie said.

Angie’s favorite color was blue and she nursed several celebrity crushes – Kris Bryant, Rey Mysterio and “George,” who played in a Cicero-based band and brought Angie a teddy bear with a heart on it.

Angie grew so excited when Mysterio appeared on TV, Debbie did something about it.

“I contacted the producer and told him Angie wanted to meet him,” Debbie said.

“She would point to the monkeys and then point to her son,” Debbie said. “She liked the dolphins that jumped out of the water and hit the balloon with their noses and splashed water all over us.”

The Sanchez family gave Angie a surprise birthday party July 10, a backyard barbecue that included members of her extended family.

Angie had a grand time, but the festivities exhausted her.

Angie fell asleep as soon as she was in bed, Debbie said.

A couple weeks later, Angie and her exuberance for life were gone, leaving the Sanchez family to mourn the memory of a young woman who desired only to love and be loved.

That said, Debbie feels Angie left one important legacy.

“Her son,” Debbie said.

Iran executes nuclear scientist who was convicted of spying

TEHRAN, Iran – Iran executed a nuclear scientist convicted of spying for the United States, an official said Sunday, acknowledging for the first time that the nation secretly detained and tried a man who was once heralded as a hero.

Shahram Amiri defected to the U.S. at the height of Western efforts to thwart Iran’s nuclear program. When he returned in 2010, he was welcomed with flowers by government leaders and even went on the Iranian talkshow circuit. Then he mysteriously disappeared.

He was hanged the same week that Tehran executed a group of militants, a year after Iran agreed to a landmark accord to limit uranium enrichment in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions.

Amiri first vanished in 2009 while on a religious pilgrimage to Muslim holy sites in Saudi Arabia. A year later, he reappeared in a series of contradictory online videos filmed in the U.S. He then walked into the Iranian-interests section at the Pakistani Embassy in Washington and demanded to be sent home.

In interviews, he described being kidnapped and held against his will

by Saudi and American spies. U.S. officials said he was to receive millions of dollars for his help in understanding Iran’s nuclear program.

Iranian judiciary spokesman Gholamhosein Mohseni Ejehi said Amiri “had access to the country’s secret and classified information” and “had been linked to our hostile and No. 1 enemy, America, the Great Satan.”

The spokesman told journalists that Amiri had been tried in a death-penalty case that was upheld by an appeals court. He did not explain why authorities never announced the conviction, although he said Amiri had access to lawyers.

News about Amiri, born in 1977, has been scant since his return to Iran.

Last year, his father told the BBC’s Farsi-language service that his son had been held at a secret site. Ejehi said Amiri’s family mistakenly believed he received a 10-year prison sentence.

On Tuesday, Iran announced it had executed a number of criminals, describing them mainly as militants from the country’s Kurdish minority.

Then an obituary notice for Amiri circulated in his hometown of Kermanshah, a city some 310 miles southwest of Tehran, according to the Iranian pro-reform daily newspaper Shargh.

Manoto, a private satellite television channel based in London believed to be run by those who back Iran’s ousted shah, reported Saturday that Amiri had been executed.

BBC Farsi also quoted Amiri’s mother saying her son’s neck bore ligature marks suggesting he had been hanged by the state.

The Associated Press could not immediately reach Amiri’s family.

His disappearance came as Western countries stepped up their efforts to impede Iran’s nuclear program under the government of hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The U.S. actively tried to recruit nuclear scientists to defect.

Later, four Iranian nuclear scientists were assassinated between 2010 and 2012, and Iran blamed the slayings on Israel and the West.

STATE Fair admission up 40%; champion ’85 Bears on roster

SPRINGFIELD – The state budget mess has come home to roost at the Illinois State Fair, where admission is up 40 percent and, for the first time, the preview night is no longer free.

Admission to Aug. 11’s preview night is $5 – half the normal admission – and fair officials have gussied it up with grandstand entertainment and a free concert by some of the 1985 champion Chicago Bears.

The gate cost for Aug. 12-20 is $10, up from $7 last year. But seniors pay the same $3 fee, and children to age 12 are free. Previously, kids had to be five or younger to get in without charge.

“In today’s fiscal climate, it’s very difficult to give something away for free,” state fair manager Kevin Gordon said of the new preview-night charge. Admission also will be $5 on the last day of the fair, Aug. 21.

S. Illinois peach crop triumphs over weather extremes

ST. ELMO – It was an upand-down-again winter and spring for southern Illinois peach growers. But despite iffy weather, the summer’s crop is strong.

Man is accused of taking video of sleeping woman

PEORIA – A judge has ordered a South Peoria man held on $100,000 bond for allegedly breaking into a woman’s house, videotaping her while she slept and then posting the video on her Facebook page.

The Peoria Journal Star reported that prosecutors sought a bond less than half that high for 25-year-old Olive Ochoa, but Peoria County

Circuit Judge Kevin Lyons set the higher amount Friday after Ochoa told him he wanted to return to Chicago.

Ochoa faces one count of residential burglary in the July 30 incident.

Prosecutor Steve Pattelli told Lyons that the victim recognized Ochoa on the video because, at some point, the camera on the phone he was using switched from taking video of her to showing him inside her bedroom.

Online court records showed Ochoa had no attorney.

Couple charged with helping relative get away after shooting

QUINCY – The father and stepmother of a man convicted in the shooting death of a 12-year-old boy face obstruction of justice charges after a decision by prosecutors in western Illinois.

Adams County State’s Attorney Jon Barnard refiled charges Friday against 42-year-old Stefan K. Crider Jr. and 40-yearold Julia A. Crider. Barnard had dropped similar charges last year to focus on the trial of Steson L. Crider.

A jury found Steson Crider guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Ray Humphrey Jr. Steson Crider was sentenced to 65 years in prison.

The Quincy Herald-Whig reported that Stefan and Julia Crider have a court hearing Aug. 25.

Prosecutors said the Criders provided money and a vehicle to help Steson Crider leave the state after the March 2015 shooting on Quincy’s northwest side.

Former East Peoria football coach convicted of theft

PEKIN – A former East Peoria

Community High School football coach is to be sentenced next month after a judge found him guilty of stealing thousands of dollars meant for the students and the team.

The Pekin Daily Times reported that Tazewell County Judge Paul Gilfillan on Friday found 38-year-old Doug Martin guilty of four counts of felony theft.

Martin testified that he spent all of the money on team expenses and only put it in a private bank account because it was more convenient than putting it into the team’s student activity fund.

Tazewell County Assistant State’s Attorney Mike Holly said he didn’t believe that Martin spent the money on the team – and added that even if Martin did, he didn’t have the right to decide where to spend school money.

Trump hoping his speech on economy steadies campaign

WASHINGTON – Donald Trump is trying to shift from a disastrous stretch of his presidential campaign to one focused on policy and party unity. But even as his allies speak of lessons the political newcomer has learned, two of his staunchest Republican critics warn that he could be heading for losses in a pair of battleground states.

Trump is set to deliver an economic speech Monday to the prestigious Detroit Economic Club in his effort to step past his spats over the past 10 days with the Muslim-American parents of a slain Army captain and the leaders of a Republican Party he has promised to unite.

“Mr. Trump on Monday will lay out a vision that’s a growth economic plan” that will focus on cutting taxes, cutting regulation, energy development and boosting middle-class wages, campaign chairman Paul Manafort said in remarks broadcast Sunday on Fox Business. “When we do that, we’re comfortable that we can get the agenda and the narrative of the campaign back on where it belongs, which is comparing the tepid economy under Obama and Clinton, versus the kind of growth economy that Mr. Trump wants to build.”

What came before Monday’s speech, Manafort suggested, doesn’t count in the race to Election Day on Nov. 8. “It’s a three-month campaign,” he said.

Trump may have done irreversible damage in two critical states, Arizona and Ohio, with an approach to immigration reform that some say is divisive, two fellow Republicans say. Trump wants to build a wall between the United States and Mexico and now says he wants to suspend immigration from “terror countries” – although he has yet to say what those are.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich – who lost the Republican nomination to Trump, has not endorsed the billionaire and skipped the party’s convention in Cleveland – said Trump faces a difficult climb in a state that’s a must-win for Republican presidential candidates.

“He’s going to win parts of Ohio, where people are really hurting. Slammers in driver’s seat as season enters final month VIEWS Curt Herron If the Joliet Slammers perform well enough over the last four weeks of the season, it looks like they will earn their first playoff berth since winning the Frontier League title in 2011.

And a key stretch for manager Jeff Isom’s squad in reaching the postseason would have been their performance against quality competition during the past two weeks.

While a great deal can still happen over the span of a month, there is no doubt Joliet has positioned itself well to earn the league’s second-seed in the four-team playoff.

After dropping five games in row to fall to 30-28 following a loss at Florence on July 23, the Slammers have won three of the next four series, posting an 8-3 record through Saturday’s victory at Southern Illinois (a loss in the completion of a suspended game is not included).

The four series featured three matchups with teams that currently also are in a position to make the playoffs. One was a sweep over Evansville, another was winning the first two games against the Miners and the other was getting swept in three games by Normal.

Southern Illinois (47-24), Evansville (40-29), Joliet (39-32) and Normal (3832) owned the top-four records in the league heading into Sunday’s contests.

If the playoffs began today, top-seed Southern Illinois would meet fourthseed Normal while second-seed Joliet would face third-seed Evansville. The two division winners earn the top-two seeds.

While the playoffs haven’t started, it feels like they have since the Slammers can close the door on all challengers.

That’s because 21 of their final 24 games (starting with Tuesday’s home game against Schaumburg) will be against teams in the East Division.

The Slammers’ Zarley Zalewski runs out a base hit against Normal on Thursday at Silver Cross Field in Joliet.

Although Joliet only will host 10 of those 24 contests, each of its upcoming division opponents is currently under the .500 mark. The only team it faces the rest of the way that’s over-.500 is Gateway, which was 37-36 going into Sunday’s play.

The combined records of the six squads that fill out the rest of the Slammers’ schedule is 196-228 (.462 percentage). Eleven of the remaining games will be played against the East’s two-worst squads, Schaumburg and Traverse City, who are a combined 6181 (.430 percentage) and Joliet has gone 9-4 against those two squads thus far.

Heading into Sunday’s play, the Slammers owned a five-game lead over Windy City (34-37) and a 5.5-game edge over Washington (32-36) for first place in the division. But, while Joliet has gone 31-23 since June 1, Washington is just 23-30 and Windy City owns a 21-34 mark.

and fifth in RBIs (56) while Marc Flores was tied for sixth in RBIs (53) and hitting .284 going into Sunday’s action.

Other leaders on offense include Alfredo Rodriguez (.288, 25 RBIs), Jake Gronsky (.277, 48 RBIs), Sikes Orvis (.274), Casey Fletcher (.267), Charlie White (.260, 24 RBIs), Joe Staley (.254, 29 RBIs) and Melvin Rodriguez (.254, 24 RBIs). In addition, newcomer Zarley Zalewski has been a nice addition, hitting .385 in his initial eight contests.

Through Saturday’s games, Joliet led the league in runs (397) and RBIs (366) and ranked second in hits (673), home runs (66) and average (.278), trailing Normal in each category.

With offense clearly not much of an issue, getting more efficient efforts from a pitching staff that has ranked near the bottom of the league will be of critical importance.

ranked squad. They also have the worst WHIP (1.52), which is walks plus hits per inning pitched. But they’re only tied for sixth in average against (.256).

Chris Rice (3-0, 3.62 ERA) has made a nice transition to the starting rotation while Liam O’Sullivan (7-0, 3.71) has led the staff throughout most of the season.

Spencer Medick (6-3), Shane Bryant (4-2) and Sean Townsley (4-6) round out the Slammers’ rotation. Tyler Levine (1.80 ERA) and Kevin McNorton (2.86 ERA) have led the way in the bullpen.

The Slammers’ playoff chances look good with four weeks remaining. Their offense keeps them in every game and their pitching is good enough to give them a chance each night out. The schedule the rest of the way is not as tough as it’s been lately and upcoming opponents almost are all East Division squads. It seems clear, Joliet definitely controls its own destiny.

Slammers fall to Miners in series finale, as comeback attempt fails STAFF REPORT MARION – The Joliet Slammers went up against the Frontier League’s best team over the weekend and came through it quite nicely.

Despite a 9-5 loss to the Southern Illinois Miners on Sunday, the Slammers won two of the three regularly scheduled games and lost the completion of a game that was tied when it was suspended earlier in the season.

The result is that Joliet (39-33) returns home enjoying a five-game lead Windy City in the East Division.

Washington is 51/2 back, Schaumburg and Lake Erie 61/2 behind and Traverse City 81/2 down.

Southern Illinois (48-24) is six games up on Evansville in the battle for first place in the West Division.

Slammers right-hander Liam O’Sullivan had one of his least successful outings Sunday. He lasted 42/3 innings

and allowed 11 hits and nine runs, six of which were earned. He walked two and struck out two. Relievers Kevin McNorton, Tyler Levine, Kaleb Ort and Donovan Feenstra combined for 31/3 shutout innings.

The Slammers sliced their 9-0 deficit to 9-1 in the sixth inning when Alfredo Rodriguez walked, Jake Gronsky singled and Carter Bell hit an RBI single. Bell has 57 RBIs for the season.

Joliet scored four runs in the eighth

inning. After Rodriguez and Zarley Zalewski singled and Bell walked to fill the bases, Flores Marc Flores reached on an error as three runs scored, and Melvin Rodriguez chipped in an RBI single.

The Slammers are home Tuesday night against Schaumburg, then play Wednesday and Thursday at Schaumburg before returning home for a weekend series against Traverse City.

is going on this fall is the classification enrollments and where some of our schools could fall as far as playoff classes are concerned. The IHSA has released the classification enrollment list and divided it into eight equal parts.

The Lincoln-Ways are front and center in that discussion. With Lincoln-Way North closing, the students in the district now are in three schools rather than four. Lincoln-Way East, formerly close to the 8A/7A bubble, is solidly in 8A with an enrollment of 2,891.

Lincoln-Way Central is at 2,142, which at this juncture is one of the larger 7A schools. That means the Knights can wind up in 8A, depending on which direction the scale slides as the playoffs arrive.

And how about Lincoln-Way West, which finished second in the state in 5A last season? The Warriors’ enrollment has jumped to 1,913, which is in the middle of 7A. West has had teams in recent years good enough to compete with many qualifiers in larger classes. This time around, the Warriors likely will face better competition consistently in the playoffs.

Our area’s 8A schools are Lockport, Bolingbrook, Joliet West, Joliet

Central, Lincoln-Way East, Minooka, Plainfield South, Plainfield North and Plainfield East. However, Plainfield North and Plainfield East, especially the Bengals, are so near the 7A/8A cutoff that they could wind up in 7A. This area’s 7A schools are Lincoln-Way Central, Plainfield Central, Lincoln-Way West and Romeoville, with Lincoln-Way Central, as noted previously, potentially being 8A. Romeoville could slip to 6A. Providence’s classification enrollment of 1,709.40 is close to the top of 6A, and Lemont is solid in 6A. Joliet Catholic and Morris are in 5A, with the Redskins not that far from 4A. The good news for potential 5A qualifiers is Montini and Sacred-Heart Griffin are gone. They have been bumped to 6A because of the success adjustment.

Coal City and Peotone are our 4A schools, though the Blue Devils are a small 4A. Reed-Custer, Wilmington, Dwight and Seneca are in 3A. Now, how many of our teams will qualify? The road to at least five victories begins in Week 1. Game plans for the Aug. 26 openers already are going in. Every game matters.

Machado hits 3 homers in 3 innings, Orioles crush White Sox

CHICAGO – Manny Machado was 16 when he first met Alex Rodriguez and they quickly became close friends and offseason workout buddies. So Machado was watching intently Sunday morning as A-Rod announced he was ending his career.

“I’m sure Manny had some emotions,” Orioles manager Buck Showalter said, “and he certainly took them out on the field with him.”

Machado became the second player in major league history to homer in the first, second and third innings, driving in a career-high seven runs in a 10-2 rout of James Shields and the White Sox. “He’s a mentor to me,” Machado said of Rodriguez. “I’ve known him for a long time. To see him go up there and talk and leave it there, it’s tough.

It’s a tough situation. I know as a personal friend he sleeps, breathes, eats baseball.”

Machado hit another two-run homer in the third off Matt Albers. According to STATS, the only other player to do that was Carl Reynolds of the Sox on July 2, 1930, at the Yankees.

“It’s pretty awesome,” Machado said. “I’m not going to lie.”

Chris Davis followed Machado’s second homer with his own and J.J. Hardy added a two-run shot before Shields (5-14) left to boos. The Orioles have hit a major league-best 168 homers this season.

Dylan Bundy (5-3) struck out a career-high nine in six innings in Baltimore’s fifth win in seven games.

One day after Machado couldn’t come up with a popup that drove in the winning run for the Sox, the 24-year-old slugger became the first Baltimore player to homer three times since Davis on May 20, 2014, against Pittsburgh.

The All-Star third baseman pulled all three shots to left field on the warm, breezy day to make it 10-0 and give him 25 homers on the season.

He’s ninth player in big league history to homer in any three consecutive innings.

Machado grounded into a double play in the fifth, lined to center in the seventh and grounded to third in the ninth, failing to become the first Baltimore player to hit four homers in a

game.

“I was trying real hard,” he said.

The Orioles, who sat home run leader Mark Trumbo (31) for the first time this season, showed the depth of their power as they opened a one-game lead over Toronto in the AL East.

Most of the damage came against Shields, who had improved after a rough start with the Sox following a June trade with San Diego. He was charged with eight runs and six hits with two walks and two hit batters, marking the sixth start the righthander has allowed at least six runs.

“I was pretty much bad all around,” Shields said. “I wasn’t hitting my spots. I was leaving the ball over the plate, and they were capitalizing on it.

You can’t do that against this team.”

Jose Abreu hit his third homer in four days for the Sox, who have dropped eight of 11.

Bundy, a rookie reliever-turned-starter, allowed two runs and four hits.

“It’s hard when you’re in the dugout for 20 minutes or so and these guys are hitting homers,” Bundy said, smiling. “I’ll take that any day.”

The time has arrived.

Practice for the high school football season officially begins Monday throughout the state.

The IHSA equipment rule for this week is helmets only Monday and Tuesday, helmets and shoulder pads Wednesday through Friday and full pads beginning Saturday. The practice hours allowed Monday through Friday is somewhat limited as well.

Health and safety of the kids comes first.

However, because of the time that is allowed for 7 on 7s and practice/ workouts with coaches in the summer, all teams are ahead of where they were in early August years ago.

That generally leads to more well played games early in the season.

Why is that a good thing? The playoff picture already begins to take shape in Week 1.

Conference races remain important. But the No. 1 goal for everyone is to make the playoffs, and No. 1A is to get in with as high a seed as possible.

Since the qualification and seeding are done first by record, it behooves one and all to win as many games as possible. A victory in Week 1 is worth just as much as a victory at any other time.

Anyone with a 6-3 record or better qualifies for the playoffs. History dictates that among the many teams that will finish 5-4, a majority will make the playoffs, but some will not. It is determined by playoff points (opponent victories).

With Joliet Central and Joliet West joining the Southwest Prairie, that 10team conference has scheduled a full round robin, so there are no nonconference games. That means anyone finishing 5-4 in the league will have 40 playoff points (four for each of the five weeks where the 5-4 team wins, five for each of the four weeks where it loses).

There has been only one season since the playoffs became a 256-team field where the playoff cutoff was as high as 40 points. Otherwise, it has always been somewhere in the 30s.

Nobody wants to take anything for granted, but a 5-4 record in the Southwest Prairie should merit a playoff berth.

Grasu leaves practice with injury that looked ‘fairly serious’

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com CHICAGO – Hroniss Grasu suffered a non-contact injury to his right knee that John Fox referred to as appearing to look “fairly serious” during Saturday’s practice at Soldier Field.

“He was changing direction and it didn’t go well, so we’ll see the extent of it as we go,” Fox said.

The injury occurred right in front of Fox at the end of a play during team drills. Grasu was helped off the field and eventually carted to the locker room. Jay Cutler spent time talking to the second-year center before Grasu was taken in.

The Soldier Field surface did not appear to be in ideal condition.

“You can’t really blame everything on the field,” said Akiem Hicks, who added that it seemed in the “same condition” as his previous experiences playing in Chicago.

Grasu has manned the starting center role throughout the spring and training camp. The 2015 third-round pick out of Oregon started eight games as a rookie. He had added weight during the offseason and gotten up to

Hendricks’ tosses gem, Cubs sweep A’s

OAKLAND, Calif. – Kyle Hendricks pitched into the eighth inning for his fifth win since June and the Cubs beat the Oakland Athletics, 3-1, on Sunday to complete a three-game sweep.

Kris Bryant and Jorge Soler both homered off A’s starter Sean Manaea (3-7). Bryant’s home run was his 27th this season, one more than the twotime All-Star had in 2015 when he was the NL’s rookie of the year.

The Cubs’ seventh straight win improved them to a major league-best 6941 and marked their 10th series sweep this season. That topped their mark from a year ago, and increased their lead in the NL Central to 111/2 games over St. Louis.

Hendricks (11-7) was dominant against an A’s team that had dropped seven of eight going into the day. The Cubs right-hander allowed three hits over 71/3 innings, struck out four and retired 17 straight before Marcus Semien’s one-out home run in the eighth.

Hendrick lowered his ERA to 2.17, second-lowest in the majors among

qualifiers behind the Dodgers’ Clayton Kershaw Pedro Strop retired two batters and Aroldis Champan pitched the ninth for his third save since arriving in a trade from the New York Yankees on July 25.

Bryant and Soler finished with two hits apiece for the Cubs. Bryant homered leading off the sixth while Soler – who homered in the series-opener Friday after being activated from the disabled list earlier in the day – hit his seventh home run this season leading off the seventh. Anthony Rizzo added an RBI double in the eighth.

The A’s had not scored in 19 consecutive innings before Semien hit his 23rd home of the year, a towering solo shot that ended Hendricks’ day.

Menaea bounced back from a rough outing against the Angels but remained winless since June 29. The rookie left-hander allowed two runs over six-plus innings, struck out four and walked two.

Hamlin wins at Watkins Glen, reaches milestone

The Associated Press WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. – Denny Hamlin’s aching back didn’t prevent him from reaching another milestone in his NASCAR career.

Ignoring what he described as the worst pain he has ever felt in a race, Hamlin prevailed in a four-lap dash to the checkered flag on Sunday in the wreck-filled Sprint Cup race at newly paved Watkins Glen International.

It’s the first road course win of Hamlin’s Cup career, and he survived a race that had eight cautions for 24 laps and two red flags for 30 minutes.

On the final lap, Hamlin, who was beaten on the road course at Sonoma in June by Tony Stewart in a bang on the last turn, held a slim lead over Martin Truex Jr. and Brad Keselowski as the three

ran nose-to-tail entering the final turns of the 90-lap race. Keselowski spun Truex in the turn and Hamlin’s No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota coasted to the victory.

Joey Logano finished second, followed by Penske teammate Keselowski, AJ Allmendinger and Stewart.

Kyle Busch, Truex, Jamie McMurray, Trevor Bayne and Matt Kenseth rounded out the top 10.

Polesitter Carl Edwards, who led the first 25 laps, finished 15th.

Stewart, who is retiring after the season, will finish his stellar Cup career with eight road wins, one fewer than the record nine of Jeff Gordon.

Gordon, who retired after last season, drove the No. 88 Chevy for Hendrick Motorsports in relief of Dale Earnhardt Jr. for the third straight race and finished 14th in his 800th career start.

on Friday and is recovering from a concussion. He will miss at least two more races.

The race, which featured seven cautions and two red flag stoppages, was shaping up as another duel between Brad Keselowski and Kyle Busch in the closing laps. But a rash of late cautions shuffled Busch back.

Keselowski restarted with the lead with 25 laps to go, and Busch stalked him in second as the leaders began turning the fastest laps of the race with the end in sight.

The sixth caution flew on lap 78 for a blown engine and erased a 5-second lead the two leaders had built over Hamlin, Truex and Logano.

Keselowski lost the lead on the restart when both he and Busch overdrove the first turn, a 90-degree downhill right-hander, and Hamlin sneaked past to take the lead before another caution flew.

DENVER – Ichiro Suzuki tripled off the wall for his 3,000th career hit in the major leagues Sunday, becoming the 30th player to reach the milestone.

The 42-year-old Marlins outfielder did it in the seventh inning against Colorado at Coors Field. He joined Paul Molitor as the only players whose 3,000th hit was a triple.

Miami players came out of the dugout to congratulate Suzuki, and he waved his helmet to acknowledge the cheers.

Hitting coach Barry Bonds gave him a hug as the celebration at third base ended, and Suzuki got another round of applause when he scored on Jeff Mathis’ single, as well as a hug

a long drive to right field that carried just beyond the reach of leaping Gerardo Parra. Suzuki breezed into third standing up.

Suzuki is in his 16th season in the majors. He got 1,278 hits while playing nine years in Japan before becoming the American League Rookie of the Year and MVP with Seattle in 2001.

Suzuki was greeted with cheers every time he came to bat. He struck out in the first inning, hit a comebacker in the third and grounded out to short in the fourth.

At 42 years, 290 days, he is the second-oldest player by three days over Ricky Henderson to reach the milestone. Only Cap Anson, who was 45 when he got his 3,000th hit in 1897, was older.

Ledecky cruises to world record

RIO DE JANEIRO – Katie Ledecky was racing nothing but the clock.

It was no contest.

The unassuming teenager from suburban Washington gave the United States its first swimming gold medal of the Rio Olympics on Sunday night, crushing her own world record in the women’s 400-meter freestyle.

The result was totally expected.

Ledecky has dominated the longer freestyle events since winning gold in the 800 free at the London Olympics as a 15-year-old.

The only drama was whether she’d take the world record even lower.

Her powerful stroke quickly made that a moot point, too.

Ledecky kicked off the first wall with a lead of nearly a body length and steadily pulled away from the overmatched field – as well as the world-record line superimposed on the video screen.

Her arms churning effortlessly through the water, Ledecky touched nearly 5 seconds ahead of her closest pursuer and quickly whipped around to look at the scoreboard.

When Ledecky saw the time – 3 minutes, 56.46 seconds – she let out an uncharacteristic scream and

shook her right fist. She crushed the mark of 3:58.37 that she set nearly two years ago on the Gold Coast of Australia, and had been chasing ever since.

“I was pumped,” Ledecky said.

“That’s what I wanted and I had been so close to breaking that all year, the past two years. I knew I was due for a breakthrough.”

It was a night of world records at the Olympic Aquatics Center.

Britain’s Adam Peaty set his second mark in as many nights in the 100 breaststroke, while Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden eclipsed her own mark in the 100 butterfly.

Still to come: the men’s 4x100-meter freestyle relay, featuring the most decorated athlete in Olympic history. Michael Phelps was picked to swim for the United States, giving him a chance to add to his already staggering medal haul of 18 golds and 22 medals overall.

After the powerful U.S. team was shut out Saturday and through the first two events Sunday, Ledecky got the Americans on the top step of the podium.

She’s just getting warmed up.

Ledecky, who added gold to the silver she won in the women’s 4x100 free relay, is also favored in other two individual events: the 200 and 800 free. In addition, she could pick up another gold in the 4x200 free relay.

Peaty was nearly as dominant in the breaststroke, winning with a time of 57.13 that shattered the mark of 57.55 he set in the preliminaries.

Peaty cruised away from Cameron van der Burgh of South Africa, the defending Olympic champion who took silver this time in 58.69.

The bronze went to Cody Miller of the United States, whose time of 58.87 held off teammate Kevin Cordes.

The crowd went into frenzy at the sight of two Brazilians in the final.

But Joao Gomes finished fifth and Felipe Franca was seventh.

Sjostrom led right from the start of the fly and touched in 55.48, knocking off the mark of 55.64 she established at last year’s world championships. She sat on the edge of the deck, pumping her arms in the air, and then appeared to be overcome by tears as she climbed to her feet.

This was her first Olympic medal. Sjostrom finished fourth in the 100 fly at the London Games four years ago, missing out on the bronze by just 23-hundredths of a second.

Penny Oleksiak of Canada took the silver in 56.46, edging out defending Olympic champion Dana Vollmer. The American, who had her first child 17 months ago, settled for the bronze in 56.63.

Already, six world records have been set in Rio.

The top eight teams in qualifying move on to Tuesday’s team final, where the U.S. is expected to repeat the gold it won easily in London and give it to Karolyi as a retirement present. Karolyi is stepping away after the games, though she’s hardly in a hurry to get there. There are still a few more lessons to teach.

“My expectations are higher for you than anyone else’s,” she said. “What I’m trying to do is get the most out of every single person.”

No wonder Russian gymnastics star Aliya Mustafina figures everybody is playing for silver.

“It’s going to be really difficult to compete against the American team,” Mustafina said through a translator after the Russians survived a sometimes shaky qualifying session. “They are unbeatable at the moment.”

China and Russia both struggled at times on Sunday, beset by mistakes they can’t afford to make if they want to make the team finals anything more than a coronation. While each have their strengths, the truth is the U.S. has few weaknesses.

The margin for error will be thinner in the three-up, three-count final. Yet after the U.S. went 16 for 16 during an occasionally showstopping 90 minutes, they hardly seem overburdened by the stakes.

“I think all of our hard work was just to show the world,” said Madison Kocian, who put up the top score on uneven bars.

“I mean we’re 10 points ahead.”

Something that’s not supposed to happen.

Good luck world. It’s up to China, Russia, Great Britain, Brazil, Germany, Japan and the Netherlands to knock the Americans off their throne. How difficult will it be? Consider this: the margin between the U.S. and the Chinese on Sunday was greater than the margin between China and 12th-place Belgium.

Romania failed to qualify for the Olympics as a team for the first time in more than 40 years but will have an event finalist after Catalina Ponor finished in the top eight on beam. Uzbekistan’s Oksana Chusovitina, competing in her record seventh Olympics, reached the vault final after finishing fifth in qualifying.

RIO DE JANEIRO – Juan Martin del Potro is back, and Novak Djokovic is gone.

The top-ranked Djokovic was swept out of the singles tournament at the Olympics in the first round Sunday by the 2009 U.S. Open champion 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2) in a result that left both players sobbing.

After three left wrist surgeries that had him contemplating retirement from tennis, del Potro is ranked just 145th in the world.

But when the big Argentine is healthy and smacking his signature forehand around the court, his play is worthy of the gold-medal match.

It would be a forehand off the net cord, however, that clinched victory on his second match point. The two shared a long embrace at the net, with Djokovic’s legacy still missing an Olympic gold medal. He’ll be 33 in 2020.

Corey Cogdell-Unrein, wife of Bears defensive lineman Mitch Unrein, won the bronze medal Sunday in Rio for trap shooting.

Cogdell-Unrein, in her third Olympics, defeated Spain’s Fatima Galvez in the bronze medal match in a shoot-off after both shooters hit 13 of 15 targets. Cogdell-Unrein also won a bronze at the 2008 Beijing Games.

“Missing my first target out was definitely not a good feeling,” Cogdell-Unrein said, per the AP. “But I knew if I smoothed out and do what I normally do, I could still continue to shoot a good final and that’s what I did.”

During Saturday’s Bears practice at Soldier Field, Unrein’s teammates wore “Team Unrein” Olympics shirts, and Kyle Long showed his support for Unrein’s Olympian wife on social media.

Standing in the darkened tunnel before entering Rio Olympic Arena on Sunday night, the U.S. women’s gymnastics team felt the pressure that comes not from outside expectations but those held within.

Then the lights came on.

And just like that, the young women in the glittery red-and-blue leotards national team coordinator Martha Karolyi has molded into a global force relaxed.

And dominated.

On bars. On beam. On vault and floor too. Their not-a-typo score of 185.238 was nearly 10 points better than second-place China through four of the five subdivisions, a preposterous gap in a sport where the difference between first and second is measured in fractions.

“It’s never 100 percent perfect but I think we showed that our gymnastics is of the highest level,” Karolyi said.

One no opponent is close to reaching.

If the U.S. had swapped out its highest score on each event with its lowest, it would still be up by six points.

Three-time world champion Simone Biles led the way. Her score of 62.366 was well clear of teammate Aly Raisman. So much for the butterflies in her stomach.

“I do a very good job at hiding it,” Biles said. “The team, we just calm it down.”

Consider it a luxury of being so far beyond the rest of the planet. All five women earned a spot in either the all-around or event finals, or in the case of Biles and Raisman, both.

Raisman, a three-time Olympic medalist four years ago, grabbed the second spot in the individual all-around for the Americans by edging reigning Olympic champion Gabby Douglas thanks in part to what Raisman called “the best bar routine of my life.”

Rules limit each country to two gymnasts per event in the all-around and event finals, meaning even though Douglas was third overall, she’ll miss out on a chance to defend the crown she won in London. Not that she was moping. When Raisman drilled her dismount on beam, Douglas rose from her chair and gave her a hug.

A controversial selection to the five-woman team after a so-so performance at Olympic trials, Douglas validated Karolyi’s choice with steady performances all over, including a bars set that earned her a spot in the individual finals.

“She said ‘I believe in you, and you can go out and do it,’” Douglas said. “At the end of the day that means so much ... because she’s very precise. It feels good.”

Memory research promising Dear Dr. K: How do we make memories, where do our brains store them, and when we lose them, do we lose them forever?

Dear Reader: I used to think of memories as single entities, like books on a shelf.

Instead, memories are more like a cloth that weaves together visual images, sounds, other sensations and emotions.

Different areas of the brain process and store different aspects of a memory. For example, when you learned a song – “The Star-Spangled Banner,” say – you stored the words in a different region of your brain from where you stored the song’s melody.

The memory of the words and melody might also be connected to an image of the American flag, stored in another location. Your memories are thus intricately broken down into pieces, stored in different places, but “cross-referenced” and thereby connected.

But how does a memory get made and filed away?

Stage 1: Acquisition. When you learn new information, it first gets stored in shortterm memory. This occurs primarily in a part of the brain called the hippocampus, deep inside the brain. Most short-term memories quickly fade.

Stage 2: Consolidation. For short-term memory to become long-term memory, the initial neuronal pathways must be strengthened.

When an event is emotionally charged, it is more likely to become part of long-term memory. Once a memory is established (consolidated), it is stored in areas of the cerebral cortex. That’s the large, domed outer layer of the brain.

The memories that endure are those that were encoded most completely in the first place – the information that you paid the closest attention to when you learned it. Memories that involve multiple senses as well as emotions are more likely to be retained.

For example, like me, you probably remember exactly what you were doing when you heard about the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

You probably remember who else was with you, where you were, and the first picture you saw of the twin towers. That’s because the emotional charge of learning that our country had been attacked caused you to store everything about that moment in your memory.

But, like me, you probably have no idea what you were doing exactly 24 hours before and 24 hours after you heard about the 9/11 attacks.

Stage 3: Retrieval. Memories are stored in the brain inside certain small groups of nerve cells (neurons). Each cell has little projections that, microscopically, look like tiny trees with branches and twigs. Connections between the “trees” of two cells are called synapses. Two nerve cells talk to each other through the synapse. When you’re not thinking about a memory, the synapses are inactive. When you want to recall a memory, your brain must reactivate the synapses.

You asked if a person who loses memories loses them forever. Until recently, we thought that probably was the case.

However, exciting new research indicates that “lost” memories may not have been destroyed. They may just have been made inaccessible – and potentially recoverable.

Dear Abby: I DEAR ABBY have been with my boyfriend, Jeanne “Jake,” for a Phillips year and a half.

To put it mildly, his dad does not like me. He has never thought I was good enough for his son, and he doesn’t like the fact I have a daughter from an earlier relationship. He thinks I’m interested in Jake only for his money, even though I work a full-time job and Jake and I share everything equally, except my daughter’s expenses. I pay for those myself.

When Jake and I attend family gatherings for holidays or birthdays, his dad refuses to say hello to me. He does, however, make derogatory or negative remarks about me to Jake. It’s incredibly hurtful and demeaning.

I have tried bringing it up to Jake, and he agrees. But he will not address it with his dad because “Dad won’t change.” Can you help? – Disliked In Massachusetts Dear Disliked: I don’t know how serious Jake is about you, but if he was in love with you and planned on marrying you, he would insist that, at the very least, his father treat you with respect. Dad won’t change because his son isn’t assertive enough to make plain if he doesn’t, he will be seeing less of the both of you. I can only hope your child isn’t on the receiving end of this kind of treatment, because if that’s happening – for both of your sakes – I’m advising you to end the romance with Jake.

Dear Abby: I have been married to the love of my life for 21 years. He has helped me raise my two children to adulthood. Both have now moved away and have their own lives.

My problem started a year and a half ago, when my grandson was born. I live 750 miles from my daughter and her little boy, and have a standing invitation to see them as often as I want (every three to four months).

It makes more sense for me to travel to see them than the reverse.

In today’s deal, look at the East hand. South opens one no-trump, West passes, and North responds two clubs, Stayman. What should East do, if anything?

South rebids two spades, West passes, and North raises to four spades. After West leads the club eight, how should East plan the defense?

When North uses Stayman, East should double to show good clubs.

East should know that partner never finds the best opening lead after an uncontested auction, so he should take the opportunity to help his partner.

East wins the first trick with the club queen and cashes two more winners in the suit, West discarding the diamond two. What should East do now?

First, East should check the points.

Dummy has 10, East has 13, and South 15-17. That leaves West with at most two -- he cannot have a red-suit winner. The only chance is to gain a trump trick. East must lead a fourth club. If West has the spade eight or nine, his ruff will effect an uppercut.

Dummy overruffs, but East now collects a trump trick by covering either honor when it is led from the dummy. Also, note that it doesn’t help South to ruff with his spade nine.
