Joliet D-86 board hears update on summer maintenance work

Board, superintendent discuss need for districtwide facilities plan

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet School District 86 cleaning and maintenance efforts across school buildings have been going well, according to the facilities director.

Staff were focused over the summer on mass cleaning, asbestos abatement, construction and maintenance work. Most of the work is slated to be completed by Aug. 12.

Anna White, District 86 director of facilities, told the Board of School Inspectors at Wednesday’s Facility and Finance Committee that they will “see some really nice things” when they visit the buildings.

“We’re not done, but we’ve certainly made inroads in getting our buildings to where we’re all proud of them,” she said.

White’s efforts were impressive enough for Michael Latting, principal of Washington Junior High School and Academy, to give her recognition at the meeting. He said she did an outstanding job.

White said the list of projects that needed to be addressed expanded in some cases. According to her presentation, there are some larger maintenance projects that need to be looked at in the future.

Board Vice President Jeffrey Pritz said he thought the district should go back to the drawing board on a specific districtwide facilities plan.

“We really need to get our ducks in a row, I think, again for what the priorities are in the district from a facilities standpoint and where we are with the dollars that we had left over from the last time we went out to the community,” Pritz said.

Later in the committee meeting, Superintendent Theresa Rouse said the staff has been reviewing an old facility master plan.

“That is a desperate need to have a new plan and so we do need to look at how we go about that, who we’re contracting with to help us with that,” she said.

Other board matters

Rouse shared with the board at Wednesday’s regular meeting her August schedule, which includes meeting with local religious and city leaders, as well as attending community events. She told the board she would like to pursue partnerships with local colleges and high schools to benefit District 86 students.

For Institute Day, she said she would like all staff together, including those from the district’s administrative center.

She said she wanted to ensure everyone is hearing the same message and theme.

“To have everybody on the same page as we start the school year and hearing it all together, I’d like to actually have that occur,” Rouse said.

Mudron: New Rialto management could be in by Sept. 1

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Rialto Square Theatre is on a path to have new management in place by Sept. 1, Joliet City Councilman Pat Mudron said.

Mudron, who is the council’s liaison to the Rialto, also announced what is at least a tentative meeting schedule to review and select the third-party management company that will take over theater operations.

The new management team could start “almost immediately” after being selected, Mudron said at the City Council meeting Tuesday.

“They should have an acting manager on site before Sept. 1,” he said.

Ericksen has said the Rialto hopes to have the management company in place by early September.

The Rialto has not yet posted a meeting schedule for review of the five companies that submitted proposals to manage the theater. Finance Manager Dale Evans confirmed Wednesday the schedule Mudron announced, although he noted the dates are tentative.

Evans said there would be one more meeting in the process – the Aug. 24 Rialto board meeting. The committee, which includes the entire Rialto board, would recommend a company, and the board will make the final decision, Evans said.

The five potential management companies announced last week are: Caesars Entertainment, which owns Harrah’s Casino in Joliet; Onesti Entertainment, which owns the Arcada Theatre in St. Charles; VenuWorks in Ames, Iowa; Pinnacle Venue Services in Virginia Beach, Virginia; and SMG in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania.

LARAWAY SEEKS TO MOVE SCHOOL

Referendum on Nov. 8 ballot

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Laraway School could be moved off a heavily used truck route by fall 2018 if voters approve, school officials say.

A referendum on the plan to build a new school on Rowell Avenue is slated for Nov. 8.

The school sits on Laraway Road, which is heavily used by semitrailers, trash haulers and gravel trucks moving to and from the CenterPoint Intermodal Center-Joliet, a Waste Management landfill and the Vulcan quarry.

Laraway School District 70C several years ago bought land on Rowell Avenue with hopes to someday build a school there.

School officials have decided to move ahead with the plan, using money from the large industrial tax base that provides a bright side to being located in the middle of so much industrial activity.

“We’re pretty confident we’ll be able to build the building, pay off the debt and not raise taxes,” Laraway Superintendent Joe Salmieri said.

The two-school district has $10 million in reserves, thanks in large part to the large amount of corporate per-

sonal property replacement tax it collects from the industrial expansion on the south end of Joliet.

The new school is estimated to cost $25 million.

The plan, Salmieri said, is to spend $5 million from reserves and pay off 20-year bonds that will be used to finance construction with the $1.8 million a year Laraway now collects from the corporate personal property replacement tax.

“It’s only growing,” Salmieri said, noting industrial projects under construction or on the way. “Ikea’s not online yet. Cadence is not online. Amazon’s second building and Mars are still coming. And, we’re getting $1.8 million a year.”

The cost to pay off the bonds will be about $1.5 million a year, Salmieri

said. The district estimates that revenue from its industrial base will grow to somewhere between $2.2 million and $2.5 million a year.

The referendum

But school officials have to make their case to Laraway voters.

The school board at one point planned to issue the bonds without a referendum, since no tax increase is involved, Salmieri said. But residents petitioned for a referendum.

The district has an enrollment that hovers around 450 with most students attending Laraway School. A second school, Oak Valley on Richards Street, is attended by kindergartners and first-graders.

Annual Will County Senior Resource Fair held

mmallory@shawmedia.com CREST HILL – The parking lot of Richland School on Caton Farm Road in Crest Hill was packed Wednesday morning as area seniors gathered for the 2016 Will County Senior Resource Fair.

The annual event was once again hosted by the Will County Senior Services Center, and featured workshops on veterans assistance, strokes, the geriatric risk factors of prescriptions and managing Medicare.

There also were more than 60 booths set up in the school, including Addus HealthCare, Oasis Senior Advisors, Spring Creek Nursing & Rehab Center, Seniors Blue Book and more.

Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow made a presentation to seniors on how to avoid scams that target them.

Glasgow, who said he’ll start receiving Social Security in December, said criminals have even attempted to scam him.

He sometimes gets three unknown calls a day – on his government-issued cellphone.

Seniors were raised with qualities such as honesty and trust, he said to the crowd.

But it’s those same qualities in seniors that scammers are looking for, he said. Glasgow provided tips to avoid scams such as paying cash if at all possible, not answering calls from unfamiliar phone numbers, not speaking to unknown callers and not leaving the flag up on the mailbox.

“Mail is the most easily stolen item in the world,” he said.

Seniors learn Wednesday about internet scams during a presentation by Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow at the Will County Senior Resource Fair.

He detailed various cases of extreme scamming or exploitation. In one instance that came through his office, a couple was finagled out of more than $400,000 in cash savings. A man going door to door was able to get the couple out of their home to show them needed repairs on the front of the residence.

Meanwhile, his accomplices went in the backdoor and walked away with the savings.

The difficult part in prosecuting the case was proving the couple had that much cash. They didn’t believe in using banks. The thieves were part of an organization based in Cook County. The couple was able to get about $250,000 of their savings back.

Glasgow also was sent a cellphone bill of more than $5,000 that looked legitimate at first glance. It had all of his basic information on it, except that it had

some information from an old address.

It’s become extremely difficult to keep up with technology, and hackers seem to stay a step ahead of the general public, he said.

“I have to call my office for help because no one else can help me,” Glasgow said of technology-based scams.

The office employs about 70 lawyers, who can advise victims on how to get help.

Will County Finance Committee in favor of funding U of I Extension

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – After considerable debate Tuesday, the Will County Board’s Finance Committee voted to recommend giving $30,000 to the University of Illinois Extension’s Grundy/Kankakee/ Will Unit.

University of Illinois Extension County Director Beth LaPlante appeared before the committee and requested $50,000 from the County Board, which would go toward a combined goal amount of $140,000. LaPlante said the combined amount would “keep the office going.” She told the committee the county’s portion would be in addi-

tion to $13,000 from United Way and $18,000 from other groups.

The money would help with programming provided by the extension office, including 4-H camps, youth development and a robotics competition that, combined with other units, helped 300 youth participate across the state.

Committee Chairman Mike Fricilone, R-Homer Glen, told LaPlante the county should support funding the extension office, but in the amount of $25,000 – the same amount it has provided for several years. There was one occasion many years ago, said County Board Speaker Jim Moustis, R-Frankfort, when the extension office received $50,000, but it’s usually $25,000.

Committee member Kenneth Harris, D-Bolingbrook, asked LaPlante if there’s a plan if the money does not come.

LaPlante said there is a plan to reduce programming, but that $50,000 gets the county “a big bang for its buck.”

Moustis suggested funding $5,000 above the normal amount, adding that the extension is the only agency the County Board funds on an annual basis. He said it would be tough to double the funding amount, citing the county’s budgetary restrictions.

Committee member Jacqueline Traynere, D-Bolingbrook, suggested $15,000 for the first half of the year and

$15,000 for the second half of the year, or $25,000 and then $5,000.

“The state’s only got a half-year budget,” Traynere said.

Committee member Cory Singer, R-Frankfort, said the committee debating the topic at length is another symptom of how the state’s financial problems are affecting everybody. He said if he had assurance the state would pay the county what it’s owed, he wouldn’t have anxiety about funding the extension office.

Ultimately, the committee voted unanimously to recommend funding the office at $30,000 for the year. The County Board will consider the measure later in August.

Woman sentenced to 20 years Braidwood police offer help

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A judge Wednesday sentenced a Joliet woman to 20 years in prison for killing her roommate two summers ago.

Kadiedra S. Speed, 22, faced up to 60 years behind bars after being convicted of the murder of Sharleatha M. Green, but received the minimum sentence from Judge Daniel Rozak.

On Aug. 31, 2014, Speed’s boyfriend, Marcus Molden, came into the Milano Bakery where she worked and told her the locks had Kadiedra been changed at their S. Speed apartment in the 200 block of North Eastern Avenue and her property was going to be tossed out onto the lawn, according to trial testimony. Both women, Molden, and Green’s boyfriend, Deondre Brefford, had been living in the small basement apartment for about a month until the women argued the night before the slaying about Green’s relationship with Speed’s boyfriend, according to trial testimony.

Speed walked back to her apartment building, broke a window to get inside her bedroom and walked into

the living room, where she used a knife from her purse to stab Green, 34, once in the lungs and heart.

During a bench trial earlier this year, the defense did not deny Speed killed Green, but said Green had been swinging a baseball bat at her while Speed was going to get her haircutting equipment from a closet.

Rozak said Wednesday it was clear Green and the others wrongfully locked Speed out of the apartment.

“None of that excuses or justifies the defendant’s actions, but the tension and conflict definitely escalated due to the deceased’s conduct,” Rozak said.

The judge said testimony from Speed’s employers and co-workers showed “she was working hard to get out of that [living] situation” and her prior criminal record was negligible.

“I view any [prison] sentence as a deterrent to others and this must be served at 100 percent. There is no good time credit or early release,” Rozak said.

The courtroom audience was silent after the sentence was announced and Speed showed no reaction as she returned to her seat near the jury box.

“I’m glad justice was served,” Green’s aunt, Lydia Young, said outside the courtroom. “It should’ve been more than 20 years.”

bstanley@shawmedia.com BRAIDWOOD – The Braidwood Police Department hopes a new partnership will make it easier for heroin addicts to receive treatment.

Last month, the department began working with A Man in Recovery and Braidwood Area Healthy Community Coalition to place addicts in treatment programs.

“A Man in Recovery coordinates placement anywhere in the United States,” Chief Nick Ficarello said.

“You will receive the treatment you need within hours, not days.”

The process starts when an addict comes into the police station and a volunteer assists with paperwork.

Anyone facing an outstanding warrant, who is the subject of a criminal investigation or who already has three drug-related convictions is not eligible.

“We cannot treat this heroin epidemic by just law enforcement action.

We have to track this from as many different angles as we can come up with,” Ficarello said.

The police chief said “epidemic” is an appropriate way to describe the

problem affecting people of every age, race and income level. His great-niece died earlier this year after a longtime struggle with heroin use.

“I wish we could’ve gotten her into this program,” Ficarello said.

Ficarello said during the last month, police have come into contact with two people while search warrants were being executed, both addicts who were not targets of those investigations. They told officers they wanted help with their problem and were subsequently enrolled in treatment.

Ficarello said drug activity remains the department’s biggest focus.

“We can tell our actions have resulted in less reports [of drug activity]. But that means one of two things,” Ficarello said. “They’re getting more tight-lipped about it or they are not dealing as much. Either way, it’s a concern.”

LOCAL BRIEFS Masked gunman robs Romeoville convenience store

ROMEOVILLE – Police are seeking a masked man who robbed a Romeoville convenience store early Monday.

Romeoville Police Department Cmdr.

John Ferdinardo said the robbery occurred about 1 a.m. at the 7-Eleven at 31 Alexander Circle.

“He came to the store riding a white bike with red or pink forks that he used to prop open the door,” Ferdinardo said.

The man then went to the counter and showed the clerk he was carrying a handgun. After taking $145 from the register, the bandit got on the bicycle and fled. No one was injured.

The suspect was described as a white man who is about 5 feet 11 inches tall. He was wearing a black mask, black sweater with white trim and dark pants with a white stripe.

On July 20, a masked gunman robbed the 7-Eleven at Laraway and Nelson roads in New Lenox and was linked to several other recent holdups, including one in Romeoville. However, that suspect was arrested a few days later after attempting another robbery in Oak Lawn, according to

Police: Baby cow stolen from Wilmington Township farm

WILMINGTON TOWNSHIP – Police are investigating a possible cownapping in Wilmington Township.

On Saturday, Will County sheriff’s deputies were called to a 31-acre property in the 23000 block of West Widows Road, where a farmer reported a week-old calf had been stolen.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said the man last saw the baby brown cow Thursday afternoon.

“Calves that young stay close to their mothers for feeding, so [he] thought it was unusual when he did not see him on Friday,” Hoffmeyer said.

The farmer did not find any damage to fences surrounding the property where the calf was penned, according to Hoffmeyer.

“Nor did he find any areas of blood that would suggest a coyote or wolf would have taken the animal,” she said.

The calf weighed about 100 pounds and was valued at $600, according to police reports.

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – In a salute to the military, this year’s Three Rivers Festival in Channahon has invited any veteran or active duty military personnel to be the grand marshal at its parade.

“Our theme this year is ‘A Salute to America,’ and we currently have about 30 to 50 grand marshals,” Three Rivers Festival Committee member Mike Rittoff said. “For those who can’t walk, Morris Hospital has donated their patient transportation buses to carry them in the parade.”

Rittoff said the community is encouraged to show their patriotism by waving flags as the grand marshals pass.

About 2,000 flags will be handed out along the parade route before the start of the parade to achieve the feeling the committee is going for.

After the parade, the grand marshals will be treated to lunch at the festival grounds, and the Joliet American Legion Band will perform.

The festival will start Wednesday and run through Aug. 14, the day of the parade.

“The festival committee has planned another great event,” Rittoff said. “There are activities and events

for all ages from babies to adults.”

The event opens with Special Needs Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, by invitation only.

The festival sets aside the fourhour window for families to visit and enjoy the carnival without the sensory issues caused by crowds, music and lights.

The food midway opens to the public at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

The carnival and live entertainment are a major attraction each day of the festival, Rittoff said.

Entertainment this year includes Pandora Rocks on Wednesday night, Rockstar Rodeo the night of Aug. 11, ARRA the night of Aug. 12 and the Hairbangers Ball the night of Aug. 13.

The Family Entertainment Stage will host performances by local dance schools, the Little Miss Channahon contest and family events such as the Wild Times Exotic Creatures Show.

Illinois Beer Festival coming up Aug. 13

Beer lovers, and those just curious, can have their choice of brews from more than 40 breweries at the inaugural Illinois Beer Festival from 4 to 9 p.m. Aug. 13 at the Grundy County Fairgrounds in Morris, where event-goers will be able to sample the best the area has to offer.

Organizer Aren Hansen said after attending his first beer festival he knew he wanted to bring the concept to Grundy County, where he operates Honest Abe’s Tap and Grill.

“We have a lot of great craft breweries in Illinois, and I wanted to give people the opportunity to experience them all in one place,” Hansen said.

WILMINGTON – A bison calf has been born at Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie, joining the 10 offspring born at Midewin earlier this year.

The herd now stands at 37. Midewin staff spotted the new calf last week during routine rounds on the prairie when they noticed a very young calf with a bright orange coat that is typical of newborn bison, according to a news release. The calf stayed close to its mother, nursing and nuzzling and concentrating on finding its balance on wobbly new legs. The calf’s umbilical cord still was attached.

The birth was unexpected this long after the usual birthing season for bison, which typically runs through April and May. “This is a wonderful surprise,” Acting Prairie Supervisor Kurt Steele said in the news release. “It’s exciting to see the growth of the herd. Each new arrival has sparked enthusiasm among the community, Midewin volunteers and staff, and that has been terrific to see.”

The herd was introduced in October 2015 at Midewin. The bison are part of a 20-year experiment to help restore the prairie to pre-settlement

ROMEOVILLE – The village of Romeoville recently saw its bond rating improve, according to a village news release.

On Friday, Fitch Ratings assigned the village’s general obligation bonds a AA rating.

Favorable revenue framework, moderate fixed costs, long-term liability burden and demonstrated financial resilience during economic downturns resulted in the increase.

Fitch also recognized that Romeoville budgets conservatively and has maintained strong reserves as protection against future cyclical revenue declines.

Typically a community will use bonds for financing capital projects over a period of time. A rating such as AA reflects good credit, allowing municipalities to receive lower interest rates.

• LARAWAY SCHOOL Laraway School is for sale, and the previous plan was to sell it first and then seek a referendum allowing a property tax increase to pay for the new school.

Finding a buyer on those terms is a problem, school board Vice President Saul Brass said.

“I could not see a business say, ‘We’ll buy your property. We’ll wait for you to pass a referendum. We’ll wait for you to build a new building before you move,’ ” Brass said, describing the chain of events such a sale would require. “It’s not going to happen.”

“We still have to take Laraway to get to the new school,” she said.

Brass acknowledged that is true for many residents, but added that most of the district population lives east of Route 53, another truck corridor, so many won’t have to cross Route 53 to get to the new school, which is on their side of the highway, he said.

School officials do not expect to see trucks on the stretch of Rowell Avenue where the new school would be located. The 26-acre site, now a cornfield, is just south of the Sugar Creek neighborhood.

“We believe we’re doing the best for the majority of people in terms of safety,” Brass said.

If the referendum passes, construction would start in spring with an expected school opening in fall 2018.

Bessie C. Hinch-McDowell was born on May 24, 1924, in Pelahatchie, Mississippi. She was one of five children born to the union of Mr. and Mrs. Laura Wilson. She departed this life on Friday, July 29, 2016, at Joliet Area Community Hospice in Joliet.

Bessie was a high school graduate and was employed at our local National Cleaners and Laundry for more than 25 years before she retired and became a volunteer at Senior Companion here in Joliet.

Bessie resided in Joliet for many years prior to her death.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Narissa; two brothers, L.C. and Bob Wilson; and one stepson, Reddrick McDowell.

CHICAGO – Illinois officials posted new forms this week for doctors and patients in the state’s medical marijuana program to reflect changes in the law, and announced Wednesday that July retail sales reached a new high at $2.9 million.

Those changes are expected to further drive growth in the program, but won’t be reflected in retail sales until next month.

Dead toddler found after fire in abandoned house

CHICAGO – Authorities said firefighters found the body of a dead toddler after extinguishing a small garbage fire in the basement of an abandoned home on Chicago’s South Side.

The fire department said firefighters smelled lighter fluid in a gangway late Tuesday before finding the small blaze in the basement of the two-story house in the Englewood neighborhood.

Department spokesman Larry Langford said the fire had been intentionally set.

He said after extinguishing the fire,

Carbondale officer injured in shooting out of hospital

CARBONDALE – A Carbondale police officer has been released from the hospital after he was shot during a pursuit over the weekend.

Carbondale police said Tuesday that 26-year-old officer Trey Harris was released from the St. Louis-area hospital where he was treated after the Sunday shooting. Details of his injuries weren’t provided but police said they were serious.

Officials said he has been with the department for three years and three months.

The Southern Illinois reported Harris will require further medical treatment but can recover at home.

Harris was shot when someone opened fire from a vehicle speeding away from a shooting scene. Police said they’re looking for two suspects and the shooting is under investigation.

GOP frustration was hurting his campaign, even as he openly contemplated an Election Day loss.

“Wouldn’t that be embarrassing to lose to crooked Hillary Clinton? That would be terrible,” he said during a campaign stop in battleground Florida. He also insisted, “We’ve never been this united.”

In an interview later Wednesday with Florida’s WPEC-TV, Trump was asked if he was being “baited into battles.”

“I think that’s probably right,” he acknowledged.

“We’re going to focus more on Hillary Clinton.”

The most powerful Republicans in Washington and New York’s Trump Tower concede things will not change unless Trump wants them to.

“The candidate is in control of his campaign,” campaign chairman Paul Manafort told Fox News Channel, highlighting his inability to control the nominee. “And I’m in control of doing the things that he wants me to do in the campaign.”

Clinton, meanwhile, kept up her assault on Trump’s business practices, holding up a Trump-branded tie as

she spoke at the Knotty Tie Company in battleground Colorado.

“I really would like him to explain why he paid Chinese workers to make Trump ties,” she told employees in Denver, “instead of deciding to make those ties right here in Colorado.”

Trump blamed the media – “so dishonest” – for growing criticism of his recent statements and his unwillingness to accept guidance from senior advisers.

Privately, however, Trump has concerns about his own team.

He was deeply upset when GOP leaders “took the other side” during his ongoing quarrel with the Khan family, one person said, and blames his campaign staff for not keeping top Republicans in line. Another person said Trump is irritated that general election planning in battleground states isn’t further along with less than 100 days until Election Day. The internal tension is complicated by Trump’s frequent travels without his senior advisers and his adult children, who wield significant influence in the campaign, the people close to the campaign said.

Joshua Stueve, spokesman for the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, said Young posed no threat to the Metro system, and nowhere in the affidavit does it mention the subway and bus system for the nation’s capital.

Metro spokesman Dan Stessel said Young, who had been employed since 2003, was fired.

“Obviously, the allegations in this case are profoundly disturbing. They’re disturbing to me, and they’re disturbing to everyone who wears the uniform,” Metro General Manager Paul Wiedefeld said in a statement.

FBI spokesman Andrew Ames confirmed that Young is the first law enforcement officer to be charged under the federal government’s terrorism law.

Young was an associate of two other people charged with terror-related crimes. In 2010, law enforcement interviewed Young because of his links to Zachary Chesser, who eventually pleaded guilty to trying to join the militant group al-Shabab and to issuing threats to the makers of the “South Park” cartoon series after they penned an episode he found insulting to Islam.

Young also met regularly with Amine El Khalifi, who pleaded guilty in a sting operation in which he planned to attempt a suicide bombing at the U.S. Capitol in 2012.

Authorities said that in their years of monitoring Young, his purchase of the gift cards was the first action that crossed the line to where he could be

charged with a crime, and they moved to arrest him as soon as it occurred.

As he was under surveillance, though, Young frequently made alarming comments, according to the affidavit. During one conversation with an undercover officer, Young said if he was ever betrayed by someone, “that person’s head would be in a cinder block at the bottom of” a lake.

In March 2015, he raised suspicion when he brought a large amount of ammunition, AK-47s and a pistol to an off-duty weapons training event provided by another Metro officer. Young said he owned even more weapons, according to the affidavit.

He praised the 2015 Paris terrorist attacks at the Bataclan music hall and elsewhere, as well as the earlier Charlie Hebdo attacks, the document said.

According to George Washington University’s Program on Extremism, Young is the 100th person since March 2014 to be charged with an offense related to support for the Islamic State.

Seamus Hughes, the program’s deputy director, said Young’s case is an outlier not just because it involves a police officer. Hughes said Young is significantly older than the average age of 26 associated with these charges. In addition, he said, court documents show that Young embraced radical ideology for six years or more; the typical radicalization occurs more quickly.

“The radicalization here did not occur overnight,” Hughes said.

U.S. predicts U.N. will swiftly condemn N. Korea launches

UNITED NATIONS – U.S. Ambassador Samantha Power predicted that the Security Council will swiftly condemn North Korea’s latest ballistic missile launches following an emergency meeting Wednesday of the U.N.’s most powerful body.

Power told reporters after the closed meeting there were “strong condemnations across the board” from all 15 council members, which she found encouraging.

Her assessment was echoed by Japan’s ambassador, Koro Bessho, who said he was heartened by the “many messages of solidarity” after his appeal to the council to be united and send a strong message to the world and especially to North Korea that its actions are “totally unacceptable.”

But Ambassador Liu Jieyi of China, an ally of North Korea, stressed that the council must not do anything to escalate tensions.

No date was announced for a fol-

low-up meeting of council members or experts, but Bessho said he hopes for council action as soon as possible.

South Korean and Japanese officials said a medium-range ballistic missile fired Wednesday flew about 620 miles and landed near Japan’s territorial waters, one of the longest flights by a North Korean missile. It was the first time a missile landed in Japan’s exclusive economic zone, which extends 200 nautical miles from shore.

The U.S. Strategic Command said initial indications were that a second missile exploded immediately after launch.

South Korea’s U.N. Ambassador Oh Joon said so far this year North Korea has conducted 13 rounds of missile tests – including the firing of 29 missiles of different varieties, ranges and trajectories using mobile launchers and submarines.

“They are doing all of this with a systematic, comprehensive purpose of upgrading and refining their missile technologies, which is not only a grave challenge to the global nonproliferation

system but also poses a clear and present danger to the security of all countries in the region,” he said.

“It is definitely in the interest of all countries to stop this dangerous series of provocations immediately,” Oh stressed.

The ballistic missile launches on Wednesday were the third since the U.S. and South Korea announced plans on July 8 to deploy an advanced missile defense system in South Korea by the end of next year – a move Pyongyang has denounced. The council has condemned six other launches in April, May and June.

The Security Council has not responded to a July 9 failed attempt by a North Korean submarine to launch a ballistic missile and the July 19 launch of two short-range Scud missiles and a Rodong intermediate-range missile.

U.N. diplomats, speaking on condition of anonymity because discussions have been private, said attempts to condemn the launches have been held up

by China.

Liu told reporters that “the situation

is tense and we need to do everything to de-escalate the situation.”

Asked whether China would support a council condemnation of the latest launches, he said “there’s a real risk” and the council needs to do things that promote denuclearization and peace and stability on the Korean peninsula, as well as a negotiated solution to North Korea’s nuclear program.

When asked what should be done to de-escalate the situation, Liu said that “if you look at the factors contributing to the tension in the Korean peninsula, I think the answer is self-evident.”

Japan’s Bessho responded that his country had not done anything to invite Wednesday’s missile launch and said there was no justification for it – which is why “we are strongly condemning the launch.”

Power denied that the South Korea missile defense system, which China opposes, was a factor, saying it is “purely defensive” and aimed solely at protecting the South Korean people and U.S. and other forces stationed there from North Korean ballistic missiles.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Prosecutors brought the first-ever federal terrorism charges against a law enforcement officer in the U.S., alleging Wednesday that a patrol officer with the D.C. region’s transit police bought about $250 worth of gift cards for someone he thought was working with the Islamic State group.

Nicholas Young, 36, of Fairfax, was arrested Wednesday at Metro Transit Police headquarters in Washington and charged with a single count of attempting to provide material support to a terrorist group. According to an FBI affidavit, Young bought the gift cards last month that he intended for the Islamic State to use to purchase mobile messaging apps. Young actually gave the codes for the gift cards to an undercover FBI officer, the affidavit said.

He made a brief court appearance Wednesday afternoon, wearing a T-shirt and what appeared to be his uniform slacks.

David Smith, who was appointed to represent Young after the hearing, said he could not comment because he had not yet been able to research the details of the case.

If convicted, Young could face up to 20 years in prison.

Young had been under surveillance since 2010, and he traveled to Libya at least once in 2011, where he said he joined rebel forces seeking to oust dic-

tator Moammar Gadhafi, the affidavit said. He traveled with body armor, a Kevlar helmet and other military-style items.

Young was deeply paranoid about law enforcement spying on him, often taking out the battery of his cellphone when he wanted to go somewhere and talk, the document said. Young frequently told one undercover source to be wary of potential informants, according to the affidavit.

On Jan. 24, 2011, an undercover officer said Young told the officer he once aimed an AK-47-style rifle out of a window at his residence, scanning for law enforcement he believed was watching him. On another occasion, he grew angry that the FBI talked to his family and co-workers and said he wanted to find the FBI agent and kidnap and torture her.

The undercover officer said he “doubted that Young seriously intended to act upon those words,” according to the affidavit.

As police searched Young’s townhome in Fairfax, neighbor Dina Ahmad described him as standoffish and said he had occasional run-ins with the homeowners’ association over his cluttered front lawn.

He often worked on his car at late hours, and the car was adorned with anti-Israel bumper stickers, she said.

“We knew something was weird about him,” Ahmad said. “You just kind of got that creepy vibe off of him.”

Workforce issues in the Joliet region Are you aware of the local unemployment rate in Will County? Recent Illinois Department of Employment Security May 2016 statistics show a 5.6 percent unemployment rate in Will County, with some cities carrying a higher rate.

We would assume that the majority of you would have a better answer to the above question rather than the following: Are you aware that area employers are seeking qualified candidates for numerous positions? The term numerous may actually be an understatement. Locally, we have companies in the health care, entertainment, manufacturing, logistics and distribution center sectors that have job openings in the hundreds. According to the Workforce Investment Board of Will County, 6,000-plus jobs exist in the region, many of which are at large national companies housed in Will County.

During the past few months, our members within these categories have approached the Chamber to assist

BUSINESS EXCHANGE Mary Jaworski and Mike Paone with a pressing issue concerning their hiring needs. The resounding feedback we received is that qualified candidates for these abundant jobs are hard to find or are unable to stay in positions for a considerable amount of time if they are hired.

Let’s address these issues individually as they each require different solutions. The companies searching for these candidates have been trying traditional hiring routes and since we’ve started to hold these discussions, they have opened their thought process to possibly expanding into “new” demographics.

In one particular area of interest, there seems to be quite a negative perception regarding certain positions

in the logistics and distribution center industry. Going back to questions, we’re certain the majority reading this article are aware of the tremendous growth in companies that have opened in the Joliet region and certainly the trucks that come with them.

However, these facilities are often painted as dark and dreary warehouses with medieval working conditions. In actuality, Chamber members we have spoken with offer quite the opposite atmosphere. Jobs and careers are available that include decent wages, benefits, training, good experience and opportunities for advancement. We’re working with a handful of organizations to overcome this perception by better educating the public. Most importantly, we are looking forward to engaging with local educational leaders to better inform high school and college students that these jobs and potential career paths exist and are not just “fall back” options.

The second issue of keeping em-

ployees on the job for a considerable amount of time may be a topic for a whole article in itself. Companies are telling us that employees often show up consistently and then suddenly resign! As we mentioned before, we are working with our Chamber members and other organizations to address these issues as the answer(s) may be fundamental, cultural, or generational concerns.

We look forward to sharing our next article with you as we expand further on the issue of engaging and retaining these employees. Please feel free to contact our office if you have suggestions, thoughts, or input on this perplexing topic in the Joliet/Will County region.

Normal rolls past Slammers to win series

cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Wednesday’s matinée between the Joliet Slammers and Normal can be summed up by what happened in the bottom of the third inning and the top of the fourth.

After Joliet loaded the bases with no outs in the third, they were unable to score with the heart of the order at the plate.

Then, in the top half of the next frame, Normal moved on top for good after getting four runs to break open what had been a scoreless tie up to that point.

The CornBelters led the rest of the way and eventually built up a ninerun advantage before settling for an 11-5 Frontier League victory over the Slammers at Silver Cross Field.

Normal (35-32) not only won its sixth in a row but claimed the series

over Joliet (37-30), who had won seven straight, including all six games in the homestand before Tuesday’s contest.

“That was a missed opportunity,” Slammers manager Jeff Isom said of his team’s third inning. “In that inning, the momentum was out there and we didn’t take advantage. That was a little bit of a mental thing for them since they got through that inning and then they go out and put up

runs right away.

“That was the key right there, it was a big inning for us. We didn’t get runs there and they did, and we’ve got to find a way to get the job done. We’ve had a lot of success with middle of our lineup and just didn’t get the job done today. The bottom line is that we have to find ways to get it done when we have guys in scoring position.”

Roark consistently posting quality starts A baseball statistic often quoted is the quality start. If you pitch six innings or more and allow no more than three earned runs, it is a quality start.

As with any statistic, it is not perfect, but it is one measure of how well a pitcher is doing. If you last at least six innings, you are not taxing the bullpen. If you allow three or fewer earned runs, you theoretically are giving your team an opportunity to win.

After Wilmington graduate Tanner Roark earned the victory in the Washington Nationals’ 10-4 win at Arizona on Tuesday night, I checked the box score. Sure enough, it was another quality start for Roark, who pitched 61/3 innings and yielded three earned runs on seven hits. He walked two and struck out six.

The start was Roark’s 22nd of the season and it marked his 15th quality start, a .688 percentage. That ranks 17th in all of Major League Baseball.

Considering there are 30 teams, most of which have had at least a couple of top starters in their rotation all season, Roark’s ranking indicates how good he has been.

For the season, he is 11-6 with a 3.02 ERA. He is 8-2 with two no-decisions over his last 12 starts dating back to May 30. In 143 innings, he has allowed

Our area’s other current major league pitcher, Cincinnati left-hander Tony Cingrani (Lincoln-Way Central), has settled into the closer role with the Reds. He has not blown a save since June 7 against St Louis, converting his last eight opportunities. He has 13 saves in 18 opportunities overall and is 2-3 with a 3.13 ERA in 47 appearances.

as well off as they would like to be, but still in position to claim one of the eight playoff berths. They are a game and a half from the fourth playoff position, the goal at this point.

Los Angeles (21-3), Minnesota (21-4) and New York (18-8) are in the top three spots. Atlanta (13-12) is fourth, followed by Indiana (12-12) and the Sky. Connecticut is 8-16 and hoping it can sneak into the eight-team playoff field.

The two teams with the best records will receive byes into the semifinals, which are best of five, and the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds get byes into Round 2. Rounds 1 and 2 are single elimination.

Quigley is averaging 17.7 minutes, 10.0 points, 0.9 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 0.6 steals. She is shooting .490 (97 of 198) from the field, .386 (22 of 57) from 3-point range and .893 (25 of 28) from the free-throw line.

Tuck, in her rookie season, averages 17.3 minutes, 7.2 points, 2.9 rebounds, 1.2 assists and is shooting .417 (65 of 156) from the floor, .296 (16 of 54) on 3-pointers and .667 (26 of 39) from the free-throw line.

Bring on the postseason. The Nationals, who have more than their share of “big-name” starters, should get there. If so, it will be interesting to see how Roark is used.

The other area starting pitcher in the big show is Atlanta’s Mike Foltynewicz (Minooka). He lost to Pittsburgh, 5-3, Tuesday night in a game that mirrors other recent starts.

He was excellent through four or five innings, not allowing a hit until the fifth, but then lost it.

Foltynewicz told an mlb.com reporter: “I did a good job of controlling that fifth inning, but the sixth inning came around and things kind of got out of control. They were actually, finally hitting me in the sixth inning and putting the ball in play. Next time around, I’ll try to stay confident and stay aggressive.”

“It just makes tomorrow’s game even bigger for us. If we would said that we’d be 6-3 after this homestand, we would have said that would be fine.

But 7-2 sounds really good. So it puts a premium on tomorrow’s game. We’ve got to score some runs early and get a good outing from (Sean) Townsley, who threw the ball very well the last time out.”

The party already was well underway Wednesday night.

Martinez hadn’t played since fracturing his elbow June 16, but he pinchhit in the eighth inning and hit Chris Sale’s first pitch into the shrubs above the centerfield fence to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead. The Tigers beat the Sox 2-1.

“I saw the pitch coming and it looked nice and slow, and I just knew,” he said.

The homer turned out to be the winning run as Detroit won its eighth straight and moved within two games of first-place Cleveland in the AL Central.

Martinez received a long standing ovation when he made his way to the plate to hit for James McCann, and it only got louder as he launched Sale’s fastball an estimated 434 feet.

“That was probably the coolest moment of my career,” he said. “I tried to go up there with a plan, but it was so crazy that I just decided to see the ball and hit the ball.”

The crowd of 32,526 roared again during the musical tribute until Martinez took a curtain call.

Sale said he approached Martinez the same way he would had he been playing every day.

“Nothing different at all,” he said. “I haven’t looked at it again, but I thought it was a good pitch, but he’s a great hitter and they do things to win games.

Sale, Quintana stay put as deadline passes

CHICAGO – The White Sox stayed quiet at Monday’s non-waiver trade deadline and held onto All-Star pitchers Chris Sale and Jose Quintana.

Don’t think that means management is satisfied.

General manager Rick Hahn again expressed his frustration and hinted at changes this offseason after making no major moves before Monday’s deadline.

“Where we’re at right now, essentially in the middle of the pack, is not acceptable and not where we want to be,” he said. “Our approach of trying to keep things together, of trying to contend each year, hasn’t gotten us to where we’ve been able to have sustained success or achieve at the level we want to.”

The Sox are tied for third in the AL Central with Kansas City at 51-55 after a 23-10 start and in danger of missing the playoffs for the 10th time in 11 years since the 2005 championship season. There were rumors that Sale and Quintana could be dealt, but nothing materialized.

The only move the Sox made was a minor one when they dealt reliever Zach Duke to St. Louis for minor league outfielder Charlie Tilson on Sunday.

Tilson is now on the DL and J.B. Shuck

Hahn would not commit to a full overhaul this offseason – out of respect, he said, for the players and coaches “trying to win every game for the remainder of the season.”

Even so, he made it clear that possibility is on the table, just as he did recently when he said the Sox are “mired in mediocrity.”

He said the frustration extends all the way to chairman Jerry Reinsdorf.

Adding to it is the fact that they have “some very special talent.”

“There are certainly multiple pieces here that are capable of playing important roles on a championship club,” Hahn said. “It’s extraordinarily frustrating to all of us that it hasn’t played out other than the first six weeks or so of the season.”

Hahn said the Sox had “intriguing” discussions with other teams, though nothing “we felt strongly enough to bring to Jerry.”

Sale and Quintana would no doubt command high prices on the trade market if the Sox went the overhaul route. That’s something the organization has refused to do in recent years, instead trying to stay competitive through trades and free agency.

Further complicating any talks involving Sale and Quintana is that both are on team-friendly contracts that don’t expire anytime soon.

CHICAGO – The winning rally lacked a signature hit, and that was just fine with the Cubs. To them, Wednesday’s comeback was a testament to the team’s collective resolve.

Matt Szczur scored on A.J. Ramos’ wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning, capping a three-run rally that gave the Cubs a 5-4 victory and a three-game sweep of the Miami Marlins.

The Cubs tied it when Ramos (11) walked Ben Zobrist with the bases loaded and two outs.

“I think we’ve got a good group,” Cubs starter John Lackey said. “A group that keeps fighting.”

Cubs manager Joe Maddon also credited those among the Wrigley Field crowd of 41,147 who stayed until the end.

Are Bears fighting too much in this training camp?

Players say it’s necessary, but Fox might need to rein in chippy Bears BOURBONNAIS – Practice and training camp fights have been happening for as long as men and boys have been playing tackle football.

When there are fans in attendance, the scuffles definitely energize the crowd, and when one breaks out, it never fails to send the media scurrying to identify the combatants and parse the significance.

At their core, these camp kerfuffles are occasionally helpful, almost always dumb and always dangerous.

But according to a number of folks who actually played the game and even ended up in a couple of training camp battles of their own, they are necessary.

The reason any of this is a topic of discussion in this space right now is, six practices (four of them in pads) into the Bears’ training camp, this team already has had as many skirmishes as many have in an entire camp, and at Wednesday’s practice it appeared things might be starting to get out of hand, but coach John Fox begged to differ.

“I don’t know if it’s good or bad,” Fox said, “it’s just part of it.

“Guys lost it a little bit. I think it’ll tone down as we go. It’s like establishing your spot. It’s part of what, these

If that is all it is, Fox needs to rein it in and put a stop to it, because in Wednesday’s main event (there were several skirmishes) players were leaping over each other jumping into the fray and the risk of an injury was real.

Boys were being dumb.

Lose a significant player for meaningful time and we’ll see how “boys will be boys” it is.

But when things got out of hand Wednesday, I happened to be watching with Tom Waddle, Tom Thayer, Jim Thornton and John Jurkovic, and they all told me it’s easy to say, “don’t do it,” but also not something players can always avoid.

If you’re fighting for your job and your livelihood, one that requires physical battles, if you don’t prove you can stand your ground and not back down, all of those ex-NFLers agreed it eventually will cost you that job.

Quarterback Jay Cutler echoed their point, saying, “Every camp is different. This camp, you’ve got a lot of turnover on the roster, you’ve got a lot of young guys, a lot of guys that are out to prove themselves, a lot of competition in select groups where guys are really trying to earn a spot, so I think it’s good that we see that.”

The other thing that’s unusual about this Bears team is the coaches seem to be encouraging a lot more com-

petition and perhaps even aggression between the offense and defense, and Cutler confirmed it.

“Definitely, you could see in OTAs, it was headed in that direction,” he said. “So it’s really no surprise that we’re getting into a few scuffles out here.

“We’re trying to run the ball physically. Coaches in meetings, we’re challenging offensive guys and defensive guys. Sometimes it’s going to spill over. I think coach Fox does a good job of kind of navigating when’s too much and when to kind of push.”

Offensive lineman Kyle Long has been forced to watch from the sideline for the most part with his strained calf, but he echoed his buddy Cutler’s thoughts.

“Yeah, no doubt about it,” Long said. “You look across the ball from us, Akiem Hicks, Eddie Goldman, Willie Young, the linebackers, the secondary; these guys are flying around and making it tough on the offense.

“I’m excited to get out there and compete with these guys. I think we’ve responded well, but on the other side of the token, that defense is playing their butt off.”

At the end of the day, football is a violent game, and guys practicing being violent are going to occasionally begin to push and shove.

I’m not saying Fox and his team are wrong to encourage it, but it does seem off what we saw Wednesday, they might be wise to do a little more to control it.

Long (calf) returns to practice; Royal, Miller remain out

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com BOURBONNAIS – Danny Trevathan’s presence in the middle of the Bears’ defense will have its benefits, but his talent level might have caused offensive guard Kyle Long to miss some practice time.

“Trying to chase Danny Trevathan for like the dozenth time at a practice,” Long said of the calf injury he suffered July 28.

“Just a combination of first-day stuff, everybody’s fired up, your body’s fired up and you know you’re out there working hard, and I have to be more careful warming up and

getting myself ready,” Long added.

“I have to be ready as a professional.”

Long returned to practice Wednesday after the team’s off day and was limited.

The three-time Pro Bowler has been able to get a different vantage point of watching rookie Cody Whitehair work at left guard.

“He’s smart. He’s making progress every day,” Long said. “And he’s somebody who wants to know how to do it. And you see him working hard. And that’s half the battle.”

Jeffery dinged up: Receiver Alshon Jeffery didn’t finish practice Wednesday because of muscle tight-

ness, coach John Fox said.

“It just got tight and we’re going to be cautious with that type of stuff, especially in the hot weather,” Fox said.

Cutler said Jeffery has “done great” in camp practices after missing the OTAs in the spring.

“I think the conditioning kind of caught up with [Jeffery] a little bit today. The off day usually throws guys off a little bit,” he said. “But he started off fast today.”

QB and OC think alike: New offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains joked that he and Cutler are “probably a little more similar than maybe I’d like to be. But I do appreciate his

work ethic, his professionalism and I love the way the guy competes.”

Cutler has seen Loggains evolve into his play-caller role.

“I think he’s getting more comfortable with his role and what the team has and kind of how to use it,” he said.

The two share a competitive nature, as we’ve observed watching the fiery Loggains at practice, and Long said the intellect also is a shared quality.

“Both really smart guys from a cerebral standpoint. They’re on a similar frequency,” Long said. “... It’s like Jay and Mini Jay in the building.”

Bullard knows he can be quick-twitch asset for Bears’ defensive line

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com BOURBONNAIS – Jonathan Bullard walked into the defensive line room to see 300-pounders Ego Ferguson, Eddie Goldman and Akiem Hicks. Will Sutton (297 pounds) and Mitch Unrein (299) aren’t too far behind.

The Bears didn’t ask him to put on any weight. They drafted him for his quickness, not to swallow up blockers.

“When I got here and I walked in the room everybody is so much bigger than me,” he said following Wednesday’s practice. “I’m like 282 [pounds], everybody else is 310 to 330, [I thought] they’re about to tell me I’ve got to get big.”

Bullard breathed a sigh of relief when he found out he didn’t need to add weight, and is using training camp to learn from those big veterans, like Hicks.

“Just how big he is and how physical and how dominant and determined in his head to be. He feels like nobody can stop him no matter what,” Bullard said of Hicks. “Double-team,

The former Florida Gator came to the Bears in the third round because of his reaction to the snap – his rare get-off that allows him to get into the

backfield.

“I definitely think I can bring it to this level. Won a few times off it, been in the backfield a few times off of it since I’ve been here,” he said. “That’s just something that’s in me, that’s

something that I pick up pretty easily.

I’m a good learner. I just go throughout the days and practice it. It’s something you’ve got to know when to do, you can’t do it all the time.”

Bullard acknowledges he has the inherent trait of a quick twitch, and the next step is learning when to use it.

That’s part of the mental game – picking up how he can use that skill to take advantage of opposing offensive linemen who will be bigger and more athletic than the ones he faced in college. The learning curve for Bullard currently is more mental than physical, and those play hand-in-hand, as he explains.

“I think you move slower because you don’t 100 percent know what you’re doing. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a speed difference, but it’s more of you’ve got to learn what you’re doing,” he said. “… When you know what you’re doing, you move faster, so I think it’s just more of getting confident and knowing what you’re doing and then moving.”

Bullard doesn’t have to get big like Goldman and Hicks, as he is expected to complement their strength and power with his quickness.

BOURBONNAIS – Bears rookie cornerback Deiondre’ Hall, one of the team’s three fourth-round selections, was the first cornerback selected in the Bears’ two drafts under general manager Ryan Pace and head coach John Fox. Fox said he has been pleased with Hall’s performance so far.

“He’s done really well with his assignment,” Fox said. “He’s got the physical tools it takes. I think, really, the proof is in how they perform in games because that’s the most pressure situation. But I like what I’ve seen. He’s got good ball skills. Again, we’re trying to get better in that area. And he has no problem learning our system.”

Hall measured in with a wingspan of nearly 83 inches at the Combine, the sixth-largest of any of the prospects.

“I’m longer than pretty much anybody else out there, so I’ll be able to get my hands out there a lot quicker,” Hall said.

The 6-2, 199-pound defensive back said he said he has spent much of training camp working with defensive backs coach Ed Donatell on press coverage technique. His length has helped him lock down opponents in practice scrimmages and release drills. “[Hall] has long arms, longer than

Hall got his first taste of his newfound fame among Bears fans at training camp. As players exit the field after each practice at Olivet Nazarene University, they make their way through a gauntlet of fans, where a tunnel of mostly young fans try to convince players to sign autographs.

“At first, it was really overwhelming,” Hall said. “Even at the end of practice, when you’re going through the gauntlet of fans screaming your name, school, come sign this, come sign that, that was definitely a reality check. I think it’s all fun; I love it.”

Hall expressed some surprise about his selection by the Bears in a May interview with Nerdist, but now that he’s spent a few months with the team, the Blue Springs, Missouri native said he is “really happy” the Bears chose him.

“It’s ended up being a great home,” Hall said. “Everybody in the organization is awesome. It’s just a really good feel. Everybody wants the best for you. You can hear around the league, there may be other teams, other organizations and whatnot that kind of take things in a different perspective. But here, it definitely feels like home.”

U.S. women beat New Zealand

The Associated Press BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil – Carli Lloyd and Alex Morgan scored a goal in each half as the U.S. women’s soccer team defeated New Zealand, 2-0, in its debut at the Rio Games on Wednesday, getting off to a solid start in its attempt to win a fourth straight Olympic gold medal.

Lloyd put the Americans ahead with a header in the ninth minute, and Morgan added to the lead with a low shot less than a minute into the second half at the Mineirao Stadium in Belo Horizonte.

The U.S. dominated from the start to earn the convincing victory and remain unbeaten in 2016, with 14 shutouts and only one draw in 16 games.

Near the end of the game, many of the nearly 10,000 fans at the stadium chanted “Zika, Zika” at goalkeeper Hope Solo, who before coming to the Olympics upset some Brazilians by tweeting a photo of herself wearing a hat with mosquito netting in a reference to the virus. The chants were repeated after the final whistle.

The Americans are trying to become the first team to win the Olympics after succeeding at the World Cup. The Olympic tournament is the first major competition for the U.S. since the retirement of key players such as Abby Wambach and Lauren Hol-

New Zealand, playing in its third consecutive Olympics, barely threatened the U.S. at the Mineirao, which holds more than 60,000 spectators.

Lloyd opened the scoring after Tobin Heath beat a couple of defenders before making a cross to the far post, where the U.S. captain outjumped a defender to head the ball into the other corner and score her seventh Olympic goal. Lloyd has scored in three straight Olympics, including in the finals both in 2008 in Beijing and 2012 in London.

It was the 89th goal in 225 appearances for the midfielder, who is the most-capped player at the Olympic tournament. She has 13 Olympic appearances, tied with Solo for the most on the team.

Morgan scored the second goal with a low shot by the near post after receiving a pass by Morgan Brian inside the box.

It was Morgan’s 12th goal of the year, and fifth at Olympic tournaments.

The U.S. is trying to win its fifth gold medal since women’s soccer became an Olympic sport in 1996 in Atlanta. The only time it didn’t win the Olympics was in 2000 in Sydney, when it lost the final to Norway.

The Americans have a fresh team with 11 Olympic newcomers, although many who made it to Rio were in the World Cup-winning squad in Canada last year.

In addition to playing with a younger team, the U.S. arrived in Rio with some players recovering from injuries, including regular starter Megan Rapinoe, who was on the bench the entire match Wednesday.

Mallory Pugh, 18, started the game to become the youngest American women’s player to start in an Olympic match.

The U.S. announced earlier Wednesday that its first two friendlies after the Olympics will be against Thailand on Sept. 15 in Columbus, Ohio, and against the Netherlands on Sept. 18 in Atlanta at the Georgia Dome.

People reporting blessings, healing at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church Know more

HOMER GLEN – In July 2015, several drops of moisture appeared on the icon of St. John the Baptist at a Homer Glen church.

The drops turned into drips – and then streams – of a fragrant yellow oil.

More than a year later, the icon continues streaming at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, attracting crowds of people wishing to venerate the icon and be anointed with the oil.

A number of people claim they have experienced physical healing as a result of visiting the icon and being anointed; many have shared their stories with members of the church.

One of those people is Assumption parishioner and iconographer Pete Mihalopoulos, who created the “sacramental art.”

On Nov. 9, 2015, several months after the icon began to emit the oil, Mihalopoulos had hip replacement surgery. Before Mihalopoulos had the surgery, he anointed himself with the oil from the icon.

The next day, Mihalopoulos was able to walk without any help. He went home two days after surgery and resumed painting. He attended church that Sunday, again walking without a cane or walker.

“Personally, I see it as God wants to show his blessing through John the Baptist,” Mihalopoulos said. “As Jesus said, there is no man that’s greater than John the Baptist.”

Cancer in remission

Ronald Koziol, 72, of Des Plaines is Catholic, but he heard about the miraculous icon via word of mouth, perhaps through his wife, who works in Joliet, Koziol said. He believes the icon facilitated his healing.

In November 2015, Koziol saw his doctor about indigestion, learned he had stage 4 esophageal cancer and received a grim prognosis: four to 11 months to live. After receiving a second opinion, Koziol opted for aggressive treatments of radiation and chemotherapy.

Koziol said he is a “firm believer in prayer” and relied on prayerful support from family and friends as well as St. Peregrine, the Catholic patron saint of cancer patients. In May, Koziol visited the church. Many people were present that day, he said.

Finally, Koziol was able to venerate the icon and receive anointing with the oil. He said the Rev. Sotirios “Fr. Sam” Dimitriou, the pastor at Assumption Orthodox church, even anointed his stomach, at Koziol’s request.

“Before I left, I lit a couple of candles, made a donation and they gave me a couple drops of the oil on a cotton ball,” Koziol said.

At the end of his treatments, Koziol had another PET/CT scan and learned the cancer was in remission. Koziol said his doctor was stunned and double-checked the results with a biopsy.

Koziol said he even had the IV port removed from his chest two weeks ago, a sign his doctor expects the cancer to stay gone.

Koziol said he brought the test results to show Dimitriou to prove what God did for him. Koziol said he is so grateful for his healing, he plans to volunteer at a nearby children’s hospital.

“I’m very thankful where I am today,” Koziol said. “I am convinced that St. John definitely helped me, if not 100 percent cured me. There is no doubt in my mind.”

Deeper meaning

Miki Price of New Lenox said she has documented the icon and its progression of dripping oil for about a year.

She takes photos each Sunday and then adds them to a Facebook page dedicated to the icon.

“People wanted to know about it and I wanted to keep them up-to-date,” Price said.

Price said the phenomenon first occurred four days after The Herald-News ran a story about her family’s conversion to Orthodoxy. She said her son, John Price, who wants to be a priest, saw the oil first.

Although she believes the icon’s miracle is meant for many people, she also feels it has special meaning for her son, as his patron saint is John the Baptist.

She also feels it relates to a dream she had before the family converted.

Price said in the dream, she and her sons, John and Matthew, had gone to a house on Parker Road in Homer Glen to buy some honey. The house was beautiful on the outside and in great disrepair on the inside.

Later, when Price told her dream to Dimitriou, he told her when the church moved to Homer Glen, it had considered making its home on Parker Road.

The Bible says John the Baptist survived on locusts and wild honey when he lived in the wilderness.

To Price, these events are connected.

“I do know it’s not something that’s just happening,” Price said. “There’s a reason why John saw it first. There’s a reason why that’s John’s saint. There’s a reason why I had that dream. There’s a reason why God led it to us.”

Catholic Education Foundation welcomes new director and coordinator

CREST HILL – Jennifer Georgis has joined the Catholic Education Foundation, Diocese of Joliet, as the new director of major gifts.

She brings seven years of experience in generating revenue for local nonprofit organizations. Georgis is also an experienced attorney in dealing with nonprofit corporations, contracts and other legal issues.

Her role with the CEF will be to form key relationships with individ-

uals, foundations and businesses, and raise significant scholarship revenue.

These gifts will help build new and existing CEF scholarship funds to benefit Catholic school students, grades K-12, in the Diocese of Joliet.

In addition, Annette Morrison has joined the Catholic Education Foundation. She will serve as program coordinator.

Morrison is a CPA by profession and has worked in administrative

roles at St. Mary Parish, Mokena, since 2007. Her new responsibility will be managing the distribution of more than $2 million in foundation scholarship awards and grants to thousands of grade school and high school students and 120 parishes throughout the Diocese of Joliet.

The Catholic Education Foundation distributes more than 1,500 need-based scholarships each year.

Eligible families with students K-12

are encouraged to apply for financial assistance to help cover the cost of tuition.

These tuition assistance grants are determined on an annual basis and families must apply each year in order to be considered. In 2014-15, the CEF distributed $1,978,410 to 1,543 students in our Catholic elementary and high schools.

Dear Dr. K: I’m at an increased risk for heart attack and stroke. Will the new dietary guidelines help keep my heart healthy?

Dear Reader: In late 2015, the U.S. government issued a new edition of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. This report helps Americans make healthy food choices. But if you’re concerned about having a heart attack or stroke, the advice in the latest update doesn’t entirely agree with what many nutrition experts – as well as the American Heart Association – recommend.

I spoke with my colleague Dr. Walter Willett, professor of epidemiology and nutrition at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He shared his thoughts about where the new guidelines might not be aggressive enough for people at risk for heart disease. Here’s our advice on four dietary components: • Red meat. The guidelines say: A healthy eating pattern includes a variety of protein foods, including seafood, lean meats and poultry, eggs, legumes (beans and peas), nuts, seeds and soy products.

We say: Grouping lean red meat with other types of protein is wrong. The health implications from these foods are very different. Many people assume the saturated fat in beef, lamb and pork is the main problem. That’s certainly one problem. But lean red meat also contains cholesterol, heme iron and other components that likely contribute to heart disease risk. If you like red meat, enjoy it only occasionally as a special treat.

• Sugar. The guidelines say: Consume less than 10 percent of calories a day from added sugars.

When we return home, she gushes about our visit for months, saying how “lonely” she is now we’re gone and how much she enjoyed our visit. I don’t understand. Is this normal grandmother behavior, or does she take it too far?

Must we continue spending big bucks to go out there every year, or can we just send pictures and call often? – Granddaughter In A Quandary Dear Granddaughter: It’s not unheard of for a hostess to leave a note asking that the shower be wiped down, or the sheets and towels be laundered before a guest leaves – particularly if the guests are family members. A gracious guest wouldn’t mind doing those things.

Rather than stew when she complained about your 2-year-old’s handprints on her windows, the appropriate response would have been: “You know, you’re right. I’ll get the Windex.” And when she made a negative comment about someone, you should have found something nice to say about the person in response.

If these visits cause financial hardship, visit your grandmother every other year or consider inviting her to visit you, but don’t cut her off completely. After all, she’s family, and not all family members are “perfect.”

Dear Abby: I’m a newly retired woman living alone. Today I received a phone call on my landline asking me to participate in a survey.

The first question asked was how many people are in my household.

In the past, I didn’t live alone and I didn’t mind participating in surveys. But calling on my landline makes me worry the person has access to my physical address. And being asked by some stranger for information such as my age, the number of people in my household, whether I have guns in the house, etc. makes me feel very vulnerable.

I told the caller I was not interested in participating and wouldn’t give a reason why. There has got to be a better way to conduct surveys.
