Rialto makes payroll cuts

JOLIET – The Rialto Square Theatre has cut most administrative staff to threeday workweeks through August.

Interim general manager Jack Ericksen said Tuesday that he informed the staff of the budget cut in the afternoon.

He said the move affecting five employees was made “obviously for cost-cutting measures.”

The reduction in hours was made after finance manager Dale Evans told the Rialto board last week that meeting payroll in August would be difficult because of the three pay periods in the month instead of the usual two.

Ericksen and Evans will continue to work five-day weeks.

“We have to be there full time,” Ericksen said.

However, Ericksen said he did not know whether they would continue to get full-time pay through the month.

“We are making payroll tomorrow,” Ericksen said Tuesday. “There are two more pay periods unfortunately in August. We

not been replaced since she left in early July to become park manager at Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park.

Other administrative positions left unfilled are assistant finance manager and box office manager. The Rialto also has not replaced a building engineer and a custodian.

The Rialto in recent weeks also ended an outside contract with a cleaning company. Ericksen said that work was taken over by staff in another cost-cutting measure.

Evans last week told the board that the Rialto has about $30,000 in cash available going into August. He said later that basic payroll costs are about $80,000, although that number varies depending on crews hired for shows.

The Rialto has all but stopped staging shows until it puts in a new management structure. But the theater continues to get income from rentals for weddings, dance recitals and other events.

Office rentals also generate revenue, and the Rialto board last week gave final approval to lease for the fall with Prairie State Legal Services for about $43,000 a year.

Rialto Foundation’s funding request denied

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Will County Board’s Finance Committee was not in favor Tuesday of a funding request from the Rialto Square Theatre Foundation.

According to a letter sent from the theater’s interim general manager and director of development Jack Ericksen to Will County Executive Larry Walsh Sr., the foundation is requesting $25,000 from Will County toward refurbishing the theater’s marquee and vertical blade and $25,000 toward support of further 90th anniversary celebration events planned throughout the rest of the year.

To date, the foundation has secured a $28,000 federal cost-sharing grant from the Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program and has received a $20,000 donation from First Midwest Bank toward the marquee work. It is also hoping to secure a $25,000 Rotary grant, the letter states.

The four-person maintenance staff, which includes a supervisor and three engineers, will not have its hours cut, Ericksen said.

The Rialto has already been cutting costs by not filling positions as people left, including four in the administrative offices and two on the building maintenance crew.

Ericksen, also the Rialto’s development director, stepped into the interim general manager role in March when a separation agreement was reached with former general manager Randy Green, who received three months in severance pay. His departure was prompted by the theater’s failure to pay payroll taxes for several pay periods, a situation that has since been corrected.

Green has not been replaced, and the board is currently reviewing proposals from outside management companies to take over Rialto operations. Ericksen said the Rialto is trying to get new management in place by early September.

Staff Nick Palmer told the committee the office is supportive of the request by the foundation; however, it would propose holding off on the request with so much uncertainty at the Rialto. Palmer said he met Monday with city of Joliet officials.

The city does not have plans to help fund the theater this year.

“At this point, we don’t even know what [the Rialto] is doing,” Palmer said to the committee.

Tuesday afternoon, the Rialto announced it was cutting five administrative staffers to three days per week starting immediately. The theater’s regular payroll is about $80,000 a month.

Finance Committee Chairman Mike Fricilone, R-Homer Glen, said it’s hard to consider the request when the committee, minutes earlier, debated whether to bump the county’s funding of the University of Illinois Cooperative Extension – deemed an important service – from the usual $25,000 per year to $30,000 this year. The committee did vote in favor of the increase.

Committee member Jacqueline Traynere, D-Bolingbrook, said she is not in favor of the county funding Rialto payroll or operations, but is in support of capital improvements that would preserve the building’s historical status.

Member Steve Wilhelmi, D-Joliet, said a small donation toward capital improvements might be a worthy expense because of the history of the building, but he’s not sure the operations of the theater have gone well.

County Board Speaker Jim Moustis, R-Frankfort, said there are historical sites all over the county worthy of preservation, but funding the Rialto would set a precedent that the county is open to all requests.

Committee member Cory Singer, R-Frankfort, made the motion to not fund any aspect of the theater. Singer, Fricilone and Kenneth Harris, D-Bolingbrook, voted “yes” to not funding the Rialto. Traynere and Wilhelmi voted “no.” Committee members Darren Bennefield, R-Aurora, and Ray Tuminello, R-New Lenox, were absent.

Joliet police said in a statement that the annual community event is “intended to heighten crime-prevention awareness, strengthen police and community partnerships, create neighborhood spirit and send a message to criminals that our neighborhoods are organized and involved.”

Joliet turns down DriveTime again

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet City Council on Tuesday voted against DriveTime again.

The council voted, 5-3, not to reconsider its decision on June 7 against a special-use permit for a DriveTime used-car dealership at 1395 N. Larkin Ave. The matter was brought to the council again after city staff reported the property owner was considering selling the vacant Century Tile store to a buyer who would put in a business that would buy blood from people.

City Manager Jim Hock cautioned the council that he had experience with a similar operation in another city that attracted people who sold their blood and used the money to buy liquor.

The vote against DriveTime on Tuesday came with no discussion on the issue, unlike in June when the matter was debated by lawyers for the company and neighborhood groups

opposed to the dealership.

The only council member who changed his vote since June was John Gerl.

Gerl, who previously expressed concerns about the blood and plasma center being located near Joliet Catholic Academy, said after the meeting that he remained concerned about the possibility.

“I felt that DriveTime was a better alternative to that,” Gerl said. He added that DriveTime’s plan to invest $750,000 in the property was another consideration.

It’s not clear that a blood and plasma center will go into the site. But unlike DriveTime, which needed a special-use permit because it is a used-car business, there are no zoning restrictions that would prevent the blood business.

Will County Habitat for Humanity also has become interested in the site as a potential new location for its ReStore operation, which sells used furniture and other items to help fund the nonprofit group.

O’Dekirk, council speak out on graffiti incident

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Mayor Bob O’Dekirk and City Council members denounced racist graffiti and swastikas found in a Joliet park Tuesday.

O’Dekirk started the City Council meeting calling attention to graffiti in a West Side park, calling for “reasonable people to keep their cool.”

The mayor said later that he was concerned about images of the graffiti being spread on social media.

“That graffiti is going to be removed as soon as possible,” O’Dekirk said. “I think the council agrees we’re not going to tolerate this in our city.”

O’Dekirk and council members who spoke on the matter did not describe the graffiti or name the park where it happened.

“We’re calling for the cooler heads and sharper minds to keep a lid on what could be a very volatile situation,” Councilwoman Bettye Gavin said.

Councilman Larry Hug said after the meeting that the graffiti included racial slurs and swastikas spray-painted in Old Rework Trail Park.

“That graffiti is going to be removed as soon as possible.

I think the council agrees we’re not going to tolerate this in our city.”

Hug also spoke out during the meeting, noting that it happened in District 2, which he represents.

“It’s the work of some very misguided people or some cowards who are interested in dividing our city,” Hug said.

Police later confirmed that the graffiti included racial slurs and swastikas spray-painted on a dock and pathway at a pond in the park. The graffiti also was on playground equipment.

The graffiti was called in to police at 3:29 p.m. Tuesday, Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said. He said it would likely be removed by Wednesday morning.

The park is located at Old Renwick Trail and Indian Head Lane.

Plainfield community project seeking to help ‘heroes’

fsarver@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – A Plainfield real estate managing broker is working with other businesses to help those who help others.

A group of business leaders and professionals gathered Tuesday at the Plainfield Area Chamber of Commerce to benefit Homes for Heroes, a national organization, and A Hero’s Home, a project started by Steve Roake, managing broker and owner of Inspire Realty Partners.

He told the group that the Homes for Heroes organization thanks veterans, police, firefighters, teachers and health care professionals – or heroes – for the service they provide to the community through discounts when they plan to buy, sell or refinance a home.

“It just makes it a lot easier for them in a lot of ways to get into a home that they want to,” Roake said.

Roake himself is working on a community project called A Hero’s Home.

“What we’re planning to do is find a distressed home, find something in

a discount, rehab it and put the hero into the home at a discount-to-market value,” Roake said. “So, basically give up some of the profit an investor would have on doing a rehab and allow a hero to save tens of thousands of dollars on a home purchase.”

Mark Whittington, an Inspire Realty Partners broker, told the group about the Inspire Heroes smartphone app that creates a network of businesses that provide heroes with special discounts.

The app benefits heroes and businesses seeking exposure, he said.

He said one teacher told him she used the app for an oil change and ended up receiving that service plus brake fixes on a discount. She’s now telling every teacher she knows about the business that provided her with the service.

“So, it’s easy for us to give up our money. I can’t encourage all of you enough, give up some of yours, too – to say thank you to these folks that are so underappreciated, especially in these times,” Whittington said.

Joliet police continue investigating double homicide

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Detectives are trying to learn what two men were doing before they were fatally shot inside an SUV early Monday.

“We’re working to backtrack their activities on [Sunday] night and check phone calls,” Joliet Police Deputy Chief Al Roechner said Tuesday.

At 2:09 a.m. a passerby in the alley off the 400 block of Sherman Street noticed a maroon Chevrolet Suburban parked with the headlights on. When he approached the vehicle, he saw the bodies of Clark D. Travis Jr., 49, of Urbana, and Jonathan L. Fairley, 25, of Joliet, inside.

Police reported that both men were shot in the head. Roechner said it does not appear the victims were robbed. No drugs or guns were found in the vehicle.

“There were no reports of gunshots in the area, but it appears they were killed where the SUV was found,” Roechner said.

Though authorities had an Urbana address on record for Travis at the time of his death, he had longtime local connections, Roechner said. Travis’ 49th birthday was Sunday, according to court records.

According to Will County Jail records, Fairley has been arrested by police in the past three years on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance, driving on a revoked or suspended license, fleeing, residential burglary, criminal damage to property and aggravated battery.

Travis has been arrested on charges of domestic battery, shoplifting, marijuana possession and numerous traffic violations in Will County since the 1990s, according to court records. He also was listed in several foreclosure proceedings.

LOCAL BRIEF Minor taken to hospital, residents displaced in apartment fire WILMINGTON – A minor was taken to a hospital after an apartment building fire Tuesday afternoon in Wilmington.

The Wilmington Fire Protection District responded at 2:51 p.m. to the blaze in the 100 block of Jackson Street, according to a district news release.

When firefighters arrived, they found smoke coming from the front and back of the two-story building. First responders quickly extinguished the fire, which originated on the first floor and burned a

hole in the second floor, the news release stated.

No one was found in the building during a search, but a minor who had exited before emergency crews’ arrival was taken to Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet for smoke inhalation.

The Red Cross responded to the scene to assist the displaced occupants of the building, which was deemed uninhabitable. A nearby fence and swimming pool also were damaged. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Republicans push for term limits, district map reform

mmallory@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – State legislators representing Grundy County held a news conference Tuesday morning in Minooka with Illinois House Republican Leader Jim Durkin, R-Westchester, in a push to enact term limits for state House and Senate seats and to fairly map legislative districts.

Durkin was joined by state Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris; state Rep. David Welter, R-Morris; Jerry Long – who is running in the 76th House District against state Rep. Andy Skoog, D-La Salle; and Lindsay Parkhurst – who is running in the 79th House District against state Rep. Kate Cloonen, D-Kankakee.

The group said that House Speaker Michael Madigan, D-Chicago, has rigged the election system along with Senate President John Cullerton, D-Chicago.

Rezin said politicians in control for far too long have drawn district maps to benefit themselves in bids for reelection in the Democratic-majority House and Senate. She said that in the last year, a half-million people have signed a petition for a fair district map process and

Long and Parkhurst said they stand

by the Republican party and Democrats who have spoken in favor of term limits. Parkhurst said she has chosen to term-limit herself, if elected.

“We need to be public servants and not make it a career,” she said.

Last month, a Cook County judge removed a constitutional amendment from the November ballot that would have taken away the General Assembly’s ability to draw district maps.

Durkin said that although the fair maps initiative is going before the Illinois Supreme Court next, legislators can pass the reforms by voting for the proposed constitutional amendments in the General Assembly. He said the amount of signatures on the petition to change districting cannot be ignored.

“My request is – as it has been repeatedly the past two years – is to have [Speaker Madigan] give a fair hearing – an up or down vote – on both constitutional amendments,” Durkin said of term limits and district maps.

State Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, said Tuesday afternoon that he is supportive of legislation to impose term limits on legislative leader positions, but term limits for House and Senate seats would cut off a lot of good work.

Semitrailers, they said, were parking along the street, making driving along the road difficult and unsafe.

The trucks were parked along both sides of the street, the residents said.

The ordinance approved by trustees prohibits all parking on the south side of Winchester Drive. Parking on

the north side will be prohibited from 2 to 6 a.m. and should not to exceed four hours in duration other times.

Also Monday, trustees approved a move of $1.5 million of village reserves from three certificates of deposits that matured at the end of July to higher-paying municipal bonds.

Over a five-year period, Channahon could see a return of an additional $35,000 to $40,000 as a result of the move, according to bond manager Bernardi Asset Management LLC.

CHANNAHON – At the Channahon village board meeting Monday, trustees debated what to do about the many undeveloped housing lots in town.

Neighbors are unhappy with the weeds growing on the properties, staff reported, especially the vegetation growing on tall and unmowable dirt piles.

Trustees had asked staff to explore possibilities, and Director of Community Development Mike Petrick presented a draft of a dormant land use ordinance at the meeting.

Suggestions in the draft included requiring the owners of undeveloped properties to install turf grass, plant parkway trees and remove any “spoils piles.”

Petrick said the ordinance would enhance the appearance of the properties and discourage land investors from “sitting on” developable land with no intentions to develop it. He told the board the document contained ideas and that he was looking for direction on how to proceed.

“This is the most restrictive it can be,” Village President Missey Moorman Schumacher said. “Here’s a start-

ing point.”

Petrick added that the restrictions might increase the cost to build a house and make it more difficult to find developers.

“You’re potentially punishing landowners,” he said.

Trustee Mark Scaggs, a developer, said that if the ordinance is approved as is, it could cost developers thousands of extra dollars.

Trustee Scott McMillin said he has spoken to residents who said they would be happy if the piles of dirt left on lots were reduced to make them mowable.

Other residents in unfinished neighborhoods have complained that sidewalks end abruptly at properties.

Trustees agreed that weeds and high grass were the biggest problems with the lots. Currently, the village contracts out to mow those not being taken care of to the cost of tens of thousands of dollars in a five-year period.

Staff said they would continue to work on the ordinance, possibly for grass and weed considerations only.

Also Monday, the board approved erecting no-parking signs for Winchester Drive in northeastern Channahon. A group of six residents of the Remington Woods subdivision came

State’s attorney’s motion alleging fraud in case of fatal crash denied

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Will County judge on Tuesday denied prosecutors’ attempts to vacate the sentence of a Morris teen involved in a double-fatal car crash in Grundy County.

The Will County State’s Attorney’s Office had filed a motion asking Judge Chrystel Gavlin to throw out the plea agreement, claiming the defense committed fraud against the court during the sentencing process.

Before his involvement in the double fatal crash, the 16-year-old was ticketed in Will County at 8:03 p.m. June 4 while driving east on Interstate 80 approaching Center Street in Joliet for driving 87 mph in a 55 mph zone, according to court documents.

The teen’s lawyer, Ryan Wharrie, negotiated a plea agreement during a June 28 court appearance with the State’s Attorney’s Office where, in exchange for his guilty plea in the Joliet speeding case, the minor would be sentenced to 12 months of supervision, $450 in fines and costs, and traffic safety school, according to the motion seeking to vacate the

agreement.

The minor was involved in a similar speeding incident June 21 in LaSalle County, where he was ticketed for driving 26 to 34 mph over the speed limit.

Later that same day, he was issued a citation for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident in the fatal crash, in which at about 6:50 p.m. Mark and Janice Wendling of Morris were bicycling west in the 4500 block of Old Stage Road and were hit from behind by the teen.

The minor was driving an SUV owned by Morris District 54 Principal Chris Maier, according to crash reports.

The Wendlings both died as a result of the collision.

The minor is not being named, as he has not been charged as an adult.

Charles Pelkie, spokesman for the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office, said the state will not appeal Tuesday’s ruling.

“We’ve never had this happen before,” Pelkie said.

He said the office has always relied on defense counsels to be candid, and would never have offered the disposition if it had known about the additional charges.

The office on June 23 obtained a driving abstract from the Illinois Secretary of State before the June 28 court date and there were no convictions or supervisions on the teen’s record, according to court documents.

Pelkie said that when the judge asked if there was anything in aggravation – including issues such as additional charges or a criminal record – Wharrie was silent.

In the future, Pelkie said the office intends to request defense counsels disclose charges in other counties on the record when in court in Will County.

“We are extremely pleased with the Court’s ruling today that the defendant’s attorney did not commit a fraud on the Court in reaching a negotiated plea,” Larry Wharrie, a partner of The Wharrie Law Firm, stated in an email. “... The Court’s ruling totally vindicated Ryan Wharrie from any wrongdoing.

We were confident that the Court would rule in the manner it did as the motion filed by the State was without any legal basis.”

Manhattan man charged after gun shop break-in, foot chase

MANHATTAN – A Manhattan man has been charged after a gun shop break-in and foot chase Monday ended with his arrest.

Ricardo M. Barrios-Reyes, 22, of the 200 block of Second Street in Manhattan, is charged with burglary, possession of burglary tools and obstructing identification.

According to charges filed by the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office, Barrios-Reyes entered Michael R. Naughton Law Offices, Gibbs Custom Gunsmithing and Locker Plant Antiques – all at 155 W. North St. – with the intention to commit theft.

Manhattan police responded to an alarm before 6 a.m. Monday at Gibbs Custom Gunsmithing. Police arrived and noticed a broken window on the building. They determined a suspect was inside and set up a perimeter with help from other law enforcement agencies.

The suspect was given commands to surrender, but he refused and at 6:15 a.m. he fled from another window, leading to a foot chase.

Will County sheriff’s police apprehended Barrios-Reyes on Sharp Drive.

He was preceded in death by his brother, George Lyman Francis; his sister, Mary Jane Sweet; and two infant daughters.

Mr. Francis was a U.S. Army veteran, staff sergeant, of WW II and a Bronze Star recipient. He served with the 265th Engineering Combat Battalion in France, Germany and Austria.

He attended Joliet Junior College and Armour Institute of Technology, Chicago.

Mr. Francis was an electrical engineer, serving with consulting firms in Joliet, Cedar Rapids, IA, Peoria, Urbana and Bloomington.

He was a partner and vice president of Buchanan, Bellows Associates of Bloomington before retiring in 1983. He was a member of the Society of Professional Engineers, the Illuminating Engineering Society, and the Chicago Lighting Club. He won a lighting fixture design award in a competition held in New York while employed with the Public Service Co. of Northern IL early in his career.

He was a member of Richards Street Methodist Church, Joliet.

Obama’s library a choice between 2 parks

The Associated Press CHICAGO – The two sites Barack Obama considered for his presidential library are only a mile apart in Chicago’s South Side. But the decision to build the museum in a lakefront park rather than a nearby impoverished neighborhood has left some residents worried it was a missed opportunity.

The Obama Foundation will hold a ceremony Wednesday to unveil Barack details of the president’s Obama choice of Jackson Park instead of Washington Park. For the city’s residents, there are key differences between the two historic parks, which are both near the University of Chicago.

CHICAGO – Consumer advocates encouraged Illinoisans to make their voices heard Tuesday, one day after proposed insurance rate increases as high as 45 percent were made public for health plans sold in the state under the federal health care law.

Illinois released insurance companies’ rate increase requests for 2017 late Monday, making it one of the last states in the nation to reveal what insurers have requested.

As in many parts of the country, Illinois insurers want higher premiums for next year because they have taken significant financial losses under the health law.

Enrollment has been lower than anticipated, new customers were sicker than expected, and a government system to

OAK BROOK – McDonald’s said Chief Administrative Officer Pete Bensen is retiring after 20 years with the company, marking yet another change for the world’s biggest burger maker as it seeks to transform its business.

The Oak Brook-based company said Bensen’s last day will be Sept. 2 and it will announce additional changes resulting from his retirement soon. Bensen formerly served as chief financial officer.

McDonald’s CEO Steve Easterbrook, who took over in March of last year, thanked Bensen for being a “influential contributor to our brand’s success.”

WASHINGTON – In a searing denouncement, President Barack Obama castigated Donald Trump as “unfit” and “woefully unprepared” to serve in the White House.

He challenged Republicans to withdraw their support for their party’s nominee, declaring, “There has to come a point at which you say ‘enough.’ ” While Obama has long been critical of Trump, his blistering condemnation Tuesday was a notable escalation of his involvement in the presidential race. Those who have worked with him say that in private meetings he can often appear amenable to putting a controversy aside. 5 dead after pole crash cuts bus nearly in half

ATWATER, Calif. – Leonardo Sanchez was sleeping peacefully on a bus carrying him to Oregon to pick blueberries when he was suddenly thrown facefirst into the back of the seat in front of him, awakening him to a horrific scene of chaos and death.

The bus carrying Sanchez and about 30 others on a pre-dawn journey through California’s agriculturally rich San Joaquin Valley had somehow plowed head-on into a highway pole that nearly sliced it in half. Five people died and at least 18 were hurt, including six listed in either serious or critical condition.

“There was lots of screaming and crying,” Sanchez told The Associated Press hours after Tuesday’s crash. He said only about eight people, including himself, escaped the bus largely unscathed.

“The rest of them, the police and ambulances arrived to get them out. And the dead,” he added solemnly in Spanish.

Merced County Sheriff Vern Warnke said rescuers pulled “bags of body parts” from the bus along with survi-

vors, adding that some people suffered severed limbs. Other victims were thrown from the vehicle and landed in a ditch.

The bus, operated by Autobuses Coordinados USA, was heading to Washington state on State Route 99. It was approaching Livingston, a farming and industrial town of about 13,000, where it had been scheduled to change drivers.

Apparently running late for its 1:30 a.m. driver switch, the bus veered off the highway shortly before 3:30 a.m.

A passenger headed home to Pasco,

Washington, from Mexico said it appeared the driver was trying to pass another vehicle that wouldn’t let him merge into its lane moments before the crash.

“It kind of ran him off the road,” Nakia Coleman told Washington’s Tri-City Herald newspaper.

California Highway Patrol Officer Moises Onsurez said the bus suddenly veered sharply off the highway, adding that investigators still are trying to determine why.

He said investigators have been un-

able to interview the 57-year-old driver, Mario David Vasquez of the Los Angeles area, because of the extent of his injuries.

In the accident, the pole sliced through the bus from front to back, with the vehicle coming to a stop when its first rear axle hit the pole. That was when Sanchez was violently tossed awake to discover a scene of chaos and carnage filled with the screams of trapped and injured people.

“We couldn’t pull people out because there was shattered glass everywhere, seats destroyed,” he said.

Lesser injured like himself climbed out on their own, fearful the bus might catch fire. The 55-year-old farmworker said he was left with pain in his stomach and a bruised jaw and mouth.

“It was too much. It was a very ugly accident. Thanks to God that I got out of there alive,” he said.

In all, 18 people were admitted to four hospitals with injuries ranging from critical to minor.

Doctors Medical Center in Modesto received five patients, including two men and one woman in critical condition and two women in serious condition, hospital spokeswoman Carin Sarkis said.

Governments are snapping up cheap spy tools

LIMA, Peru – Governments known to stifle dissent with imprisonment and beatings or otherwise abuse their power are buying cheap, off-the-shelf surveillance software that can monitor the phone conversations and track the movements of thousands of their citizens, an Associated Press investigation has found.

Such so-called “lawful intercept” software has been available for years to Western police and spy agencies and is now easily obtained by governments that routinely violate basic rights – outside a short blacklist that includes Syria and North Korea. For less than the price of a military helicopter, a country with little technical know-how can buy powerful surveillance gear.

Domestic spy operations rely upon companies like the Israeli-American firm Verint Systems, which has customers in more than 180 countries.

Verint also has supplied U.S. law-enforcement agencies, including those that target drug traffickers in Mexico and Colombia.

The scope and sophistication of Verint’s products is made clear in con-

fidential documents obtained by The Associated Press in Peru. They mirror on a small scale U.S. and British surveillance programs catalogued in 2013 that showed how the U.S. government collected phone records of millions not suspected of any crime.

The documents, including training manuals, contracts, invoices and emails, expose in greater detail than previously seen the inner workings of a highly secretive industry. Verint, and companies like it, disclose little about their surveillance products and

who buys them.

In Peru, the nation’s domestic intelligence agency spent a mere $22 million on a Verint package just months before its activities ground to a halt in a domestic spying scandal. The AP independently confirmed sales in countries including Australia, Brazil, Mexico and Colombia.

“The status quo is completely unacceptable,” said Marietje Schaake, a European Union lawmaker pushing for greater oversight. “The fact that this market is almost completely unregu-

lated is very disturbing.”

Analysts say about half of Verint’s surveillance dealings are in the developing world. Since the early 2000s, Verint and top competitor Nice Systems have sold mass surveillance products to the secret police in Uzbekistan and to Kazakhstan, the advocacy group Privacy International has reported.

That equipment has let Uzbek police quickly locate and arrest people who discuss sensitive information on the phone or via email, dissidents say. “The authorities’ main weapon is people’s fear,” said Tulkin Karayev, a Sweden-based exile. “Freedom of speech, freedom of expression – all this is banned.”

Verint declined to comment for this story, saying it rarely speaks with reporters. GOP betting Madigan’s unpopularity helps them Nov. 8 “Do you think he knows what he’s doing?” a top Republican asked last week about House Speaker Michael Madigan’s high-profile role at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia.

Madigan heaped public praise last week on at least two potential Democratic gubernatorial candidates, U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin and Chris Kennedy.

And he mentioned U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth by name as his state’s next U.S. senator during the July 26 presidential nomination roll call.

That may all seem like the usual national convention duties for a state Democratic Party chairman such as Madigan, and it is. But Madigan’s poll numbers are so darned awful that the Republicans believe anyone he publicly “touches” is hugely tainted.

A recent Republican-sponsored poll found that Madigan’s favorability rating was just 13 percent.

“He should keep doing what he’s doing,” cracked one Republican campaign type, who said he was carefully making notes of Madigan’s public utterances.

As is often the case, the two political parties exist in parallel universes. Yes, the Democrats say, Madigan polls poorly. But they don’t believe that voters will make up their minds about individual races based on that one “issue”

THE FIRST

VIEWS Rich Miller alone. Some even say they’re pleased that the Republicans are “wasting” their money on a strategy that the Democrats believe won’t work.

Indeed, the Republicans spent tons of money during several election cycles trying to tie the fabulously unpopular and currently incarcerated Rod Blagojevich to Democrats, and it only worked once, against Rep. Jay Hoffman in a newly drawn district with lots of unfamiliar voters. And they’ve been blasting away at Madigan for years, without any discernible impact at the polls.

Even so, if there was another high-profile Illinois Democrat out there whose favorability rating was hovering around 13 percent, you can be certain that Madigan and his people would mandate that their candidates and incumbents stay as far away from that person as humanly possible. Heck, the person’s rating wouldn’t even need to be that low. How many downstate Illinois Democrats openly campaigned with Pat Quinn two years ago when he lost every county but one to Rauner?

The simple fact is that the GOP is

placing a multimillion-dollar bet this year on a single person’s smashing unpopularity. Yes, the Republicans have tried and failed to do this same thing for literally decades. But never has so much money and effort been expended on the task – and Madigan has never been as well-known as he is today.

Local news media outlets have so far been mostly cooperative, and the Republicans essentially have their own “newspapers” that are being mailed to voters just to make sure their message gets through.

House Democrats are expected to counter all this with various retorts, including one labeling Republican Bruce Rauner as a “failed governor.”

The Democrats will try to tie Republicans to a governor with a dismal 33 percent job approval rating who, they’ll say, wants to slash vital services and inflict harm on everyday working people.

In a preview of this, Rep. John Bradley’s latest TV ad claims the Democrat “stood up to Bruce Rauner’s massive cuts to our schools,” and points out that Rauner is “bankrolling” his opponent’s campaign and claims his GOP opponent “is worse than Rauner.” Bradley, D-Marion, sits at the very top of the Republicans’ target list, and he has been hammered for weeks in the mail and on TV for being

a Madigan “pawn.”

The House Democrats often have launched their campaigns in early to mid-August, well before the Republicans could afford to fight back. This time, however, the Republicans are flush with Rauner’s money and have dominated the playing field for weeks.

Madigan reportedly told attendees at an Illinois Federation of Teachers political conference in early July that the governor’s campaign operation had spent more than $1 million on House races in just two weeks.

And they’re not just spending money on negative attacks. A recent mailer for Rep. Terri Bryant, R-Murphysboro, touts her vote for the stopgap budget “without a tax increase.” The mailer also claims Bryant is fighting “against the Chicago political machine.” The Republicans already have sent innumerable mailers like that to voters everywhere before the Democrats even have gotten out of the gate.

Not mentioned, of course, is that the stopgap budget Bryant voted for had an $8 billion deficit and will create a $10 billion state payment backlog by December.

Details, details.

Joliet Catholic grad Terry Gannon broadcasting from Rio Olympics for Golf Channel

Now, 112 years later, it returns for the Rio de Janeiro Games that begin this week. Terry Gannon could not be happier.

After broadcasting numerous huge sporting events for years, the 1981 Joliet Catholic graduate joined the Golf Channel in 2010 as a play-by-play announcer for PGA Tour events. He also covers figure skating and rugby for NBC. When golf was added to the Olympic menu, Gannon was a natural fit to help anchor the coverage.

“It wasn’t a surprise to me to get the

assignment, but you never know what NBC was going to do with it,” Gannon said. “So it was something I was very happy with.

“Golf is special to me because, 1. it was so long ago that it was in the Olympics, and 2. I have a passion for the game year-round. The first time in over a century – that’s really cool. That gets me excited that I have the opportunity to broadcast it.”

Gannon and Steve Sands will rotate play-by-play duties on the Golf Channel during the men’s competition Aug. 11 to 14 and the women’s competition Aug. 17 to 20.

“We will be on the air from 7:30-4 Brazil time every day, so they’ll be long days,” Gannon said. “On the men’s side,

It is work, yes. Yet the Olympics mean so much more to Gannon.

“I’ve done the Olympics a number of times, and I’m a true fan,” he said. “I get tickets to everything I can get my hands on. Lisa (his wife) and our kids (daughter Madailein and son Jake) are coming down for a week. It will be their first Olympics.

“In London, when I went off the air, I went over to Wimbledon to see the (Roger) Federer against (Andy) Murray gold medal match. I saw the U.S.-Japan women’s gold medal soccer game at Wembley Stadium.”

fit. It’s gotten some negative press with big names like Jason Day, Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy saying they won’t play because of the Zika virus and all that’s going on with that; but once it takes place, I think it’s going to be surprisingly good.”

The USA men’s roster will include Bubba Watson, Rickie Fowler, Patrick Reed and Matt Kuchar.

“Going in, I feel the people there want to be there,” said Gannon, who has been inducted into the Joliet Area Sports Hall of Fame and the Joliet Catholic Academy Hall of Champions.

“Now they have an opportunity to win a gold medal. Golfers have not grown up dreaming about getting a gold medal put around their neck, but now they have that chance.”

The format also has come under

scrutiny. There will be 60 golfers on the men’s side and 60 on the women’s side, each in a 72-hole, stroke-play competition.

The top 15 players in the official world golf rankings are eligible, with a maximum of four players allowed from a given nation. Outside the top 15, each nation is allowed a maximum of two players. If a country qualifies two or more players within the top 15, additional players are not eligible.

Medals will be awarded on an individual basis, although Gannon noted the format could be reworked before subsequent Olympics.

“Some people have picked apart the format,” he said. “But players we may not know will be there, and in the long run, that will help grow the game. Plenty of countries are starting to fund golf

now. That’s a big part of having it in the Olympics.”

GREAT STORIES

Don’t be surprised if an unforgettable golf story emerges.

“Every Olympics, you come across certain people who become stars that represent what the Olympics are all about,” Gannon said. “That long shot, the underdog. You have a chance in Rio for that to happen for the men and women.

“I remember there was a rower in London who almost didn’t exist in the eyes of his country. He was about a halfmile behind everyone else, but he was determined to finish. To see 20,000 people going crazy for this guy just to finish the race, that was a great story. There always are great stories like that.”

Gannon is primed to help broadcast more of them. He will leave his Los Angeles home for Rio on Saturday.

“Just being part of the Olympics is so special,” he said. “There were a lot of years I was not involved with the Olympics because my network did not have it. Now, this will be my fourth Olympics.

“Those are three weeks when the world stops. You get one chance to watch the summer games and one chance to watch the winter games every four years, and the world does watch.”

Golf fans everywhere will have the opportunity to see and hear Gannon at his best.

Baseball always has been a numbers game.

The statistics may be getting more sophisticated, yet the basic numbers that we have always known still matter. And we still tend to judge a player’s effectiveness largely by those numbers.

Following are the stats from two players who were teammates this season. Notice how most of the categories are comparable.

Player A is hitting .282 (99 for 351) with 16 doubles, eight triples, four home runs and 34 RBIs. He has stolen 15 bases, walked 33 times and struck out 51 times. His on-base percentage is .345 and slugging percentage is .407 for a .753 OPS. Player B is hitting .272 (79 for 290) with 17 doubles, one triple, two home runs and 36 RBIs. He has three stolen bases, walked 38 times and struck out 49 times. His on-base percentage is .351 and slugging percentage is .359 for a .710 OPS. The two have been teammates with the Memphis Redbirds, the St. Louis Cardinals’ Triple-A affiliate.

Normal scores late to snap Slammers’ win streak

cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The numbers all pointed in a positive direction for the Joliet Slammers as they played host to Normal on Tuesday in a Frontier League game at Silver Cross Field.

Joliet looked to extend its seven-game winning streak, capture its seventh straight victory on the current home stand and improve on its 22-11 record at home.

And to boost the cause, the Slammers went with their most reliable starting pitcher, Liam O’Sullivan, who entered the contest with a 7-0 record.

But Normal scored three runs in the fifth to overcome a 4-2 deficit, and the outcome would not be determined until the ninth, when the CornBelters got a run to claim a 6-5 win.

The squads each scored twice in the first inning. Santiago Chirino (2 for 5) doubled in the first run for Normal (34-32), and Nolan Meadows (2 for 5, three RBIs) drove in the other run on a single that hit O’Sullivan.

Joliet opened the bottom of the first with two straight hits as Charlie White (3 for 5) singled to center and Alfredo Rodriguez (2 for 3) followed with a double to right. Jake Gronsky (2 for 5) made it 2-1 on an infield out, and the other run scored when Marc Flores reached on an error.

The Slammers (37-29) moved in front, 3-2, with a run in the third inning. White led off with a double to center and Gronsky brought him in with a single up the middle.

And in the fourth inning, Zarley Zalewski smacked a solo shot to center off starter Mike Elwood to give the hosts a 4-2 advantage.

But the CornBelters grabbed the lead again in the fifth when Aaron Dudley drove in a run on a ground-rule double, and Meadows followed with a two-run blast to make it a 5-4 game.

New Zealand native changed career goal to football after visit to Alabama

BOURBONNAIS – The player trying to bring the fullback position back to the Bears didn’t know anything about football until five years ago. To him, football was referred to as “gridiron.”

Paul Lasike grew up in New Zealand with aspirations of being a professional rugby player. Then, as he explains, his path changed, and now he’s in line to be the Bears’ fullback in 2016.

“We called it gridiron in New Zealand. I came over [to BYU], and I didn’t even go to a football game my first year while playing rugby,” he said. “It wasn’t interesting until I got to Alabama.”

Lasike discovered football after his freshman year during a Mormon mission to Alabama, where football obviously is king. He returned to BYU and joined the football team, where he played three seasons for the Cougars.

He rushed for seven touchdowns and caught two other scores as a senior.

As an undrafted rookie, Lasike spent last preseason with the Cardinals before joining the Bears’ practice squad for the 2015 season. He hasn’t played in a game yet, but he did bring his parents to Chicago from New Zealand to experience a game.

“They’re really proud of me,” he said. “They have no idea what’s going on. They went to the game for the experience. They didn’t care about the game. They didn’t know what was going on.”

In rugby, Lasike played the inside center position, the player with the No. 12 jersey.

“You’re in the back line. It’s similar to what a fullback and running back does,” he said. “You’ve got to be agile with the ball in hand.”

Now, Lasike wears No. 47. He’s about 30 to 40 pounds heavier than he was as a rugby player – which is why, he said, it’d be hard for him to transition back to playing like Patriots safety Nate Ebner, who is a member of the USA rugby sevens team for the Olympics.

While Ebner is getting ready for Rio, Lasike is focused on his new path.

Dowell Loggains told Lasike to expect more “21 personnel” this season – two backs, one tight end. When the Bears’ starters have been in “21” during camp, Lasike has been in the backfield.

Lasike admitted he hasn’t always loved football, but it has grown on him.

“Twenty out of the 32 teams actually use a fullback,” he said. “I didn’t know [about the history of fullbacks], but I know that you’ve just got to go out

there and create push and a hole for the tailback. Seems like an easy enough job for me.”

It’s also an easy enough job for his relatives from New Zealand and Australia to understand when they watch Lasike play “gridiron.”

The 26-year-old has a wife and two kids who currently are in Sacramento as Lasike makes his way through camp, where he works on fullback drills with undrafted rookie Joe Sommers. For someone without a football background or any knowledge of the game before a few years ago, Lasike certainly has gained the appreciation of what it means to be in the huddle with the starters.

“Honestly, it’s such a privilege.

When they call, ’21, the firsts are up,’ it’s just a privilege,” he said. “It’s so awesome to look around the circle and think, ‘These are great athletes.’ I would’ve never imagined in my entire life even being in that situation.”

CHICAGO – Jason Hammel threw six scoreless innings, Dexter Fowler had three hits and the Cubs beat Miami ace Jose Fernandez and the Marlins, 3-2, Tuesday night.

Hammel (11-5) extended the Cubs’ scoreless streak to 24 innings before the bullpen overcame Pedro Strop’s shaky seventh. Aroldis Chapman hit 104.4 mph on the radar gun in a perfect ninth as the Cubs won for the sixth time in seven games.

Fernandez (12-6) allowed three runs and eight hits over six innings, losing consecutive starts for the first time since his 2013 rookie season.

Hammel, who gave up four hits, threw 80 pitches before being lifted for a pinch-hitter.

Adeiny Hechavarria and J.T. Realmuto each hit an RBI single in the seventh off Strop, who also committed a throwing error. Chris Coghlan’s diving catch of Christian Yelich’s looping liner to left field with two on ended the threat.

Chapman struck out one for his second save in three tries since being acquired from the Yankees.

Fowler led off the first with a triple and scored on catcher Willson Contreras’ single. Batting Contreras second worked for manager Joe Maddon, as Fowler and Contreras had consecutive hits again in the third to produce another run.

Fowler added an RBI single in the fifth off Fernandez, who fanned eight and took over the major league lead with 192 strikeouts.

Miguel Montero, batting for Hammel, struck out with two on to end the sixth. Travis Wood replaced the struggling Strop with runners at the corners and two outs in the seventh. Coghlan’s tumbling catch against Yelich brought the Wrigley Field crowd to its feet.

DETROIT – Miguel Cabrera hit his third home run in two games, Victor Martinez also went deep, and the Detroit Tigers won their seventh straight by beating the White Sox, 11-5, Tuesday night.

Andrew Romine and Cameron Maybin tripled in a six-run fifth inning for the Tigers. Cabrera had three RBIs, and Anibal Sanchez (5-12) won for the first time as a starter since April 28 – a span of 11 starts. He allowed one run and six hits in six innings.

Avisail Garcia homered twice, and Todd Frazier hit his 30th for the Sox. James Shields (3-6) held the Tigers scoreless for the first four innings, then got hit hard in the fifth.

He had allowed only five runs in his previous four starts combined.

The Sox broke a scoreless tie on Dioner Navarro’s RBI single in the fourth. Sanchez, however, retired Charlie Tilson with runners at the corners to end the inning.

The Sox put their first two batters on in the fifth, but Sanchez picked off Tyler Saladino and worked out of the jam. The Tigers took advantage in the bottom of the inning.

The Washington Post So, you run into a salad story written by a Mexican – me – and expect to see a taco salad? Not likely to happen.

There are no taco salads in Mexican kitchens. At least I have never, ever seen or heard of a taco salad either in Mexico or served in a Mexican’s home, wherever that may be in the world. I could attest to the same thing for the entire universe if it weren’t for the fact I haven’t left this Earth.

To be blunt, I do hope for a world without taco salads – and the cold and soggy taco shells of their aftermath.

Would you care for a burger-and-french fries salad with ketchup and mustard squeezed on top of dressed greens? Not I. There are fabulous tacos of all different sorts for every mood and every occasion, and there are salads, just as extraordinary and with just as many options.

Mexican kitchens are a brimming source for both.

Sadly, not many people are aware of the latter.

Maybe that’s because in Mexico, “ensaladas” are likely to be served more often at home than in restaurants. Typically, they’re not even referred to as salads; their names or titles tend to be based on a main ingredient – often with endearment (a sign of how much we love them), followed by the way it is cooked. A chayote squash salad with a vinaigrette might be called “chayotitos en vinagre,” while a green bean salad with tarragon dressing could be “ejotitos al estragon.”

Come to think of it, the term ensalada has been used in Mexico for any salad with some kind of lettuce, although that has started to change in the past decade or so. Nonetheless, the main point here is tacos are tacos; salads, whatever we call them in Spanish, are salads.

The taco salad must have been a fun and welcome addition to American menus when it made its first appearance in the 1960s. According to “Taco USA” author Gustavo Arellano’s authoritative research, it was the man behind Doritos, Elmer Doolin, who had the idea of making a Doritos bowl with what, in that era, was considered the contents of a taco: ground meat, sour cream and cheddar cheese. Some undressed pieces of tomato and shredded lettuce might have shown up soon after. As a very early TexMex creation, it has its place in history. But luckily, we have come so much further than that hard-shell version of a taco and a salad mixed together.

Here’s what I can say about Mexican salads: They are often unique, with an exotic element in them, with playful textures and multiple layers of flavor in the vinaigrettes or dressings. Those vinaigrettes or dressings tend to be so full of sazón – which can be loosely defined as having the knack for matching and mixing ingredients and flavors – they could be eaten on their own.

Mexican salads also are surprising. You are likely to see Mexican ingredients you might expect, paired with ingredients you wouldn’t necessarily think of as belonging to Mexican cuisine.

In the accompanying recipes, you’ll find crisp chayote squash paired with tart Granny Smith apple and wet jicama sticks enveloped in a rich, velvety avocado dressing with a pepita (pumpkin seed) base

and laced with dill. You’ll find cucumber, radish and jumbo lump crabmeat in a creamy dressing packed with mint, basil and jalapeño.

Mexican salads are so eye-opening they really help take “Mexicanness” out of the box that seems to equate Mexican food only with tacos. They also prove the point that tacos are exquisite and can shine on their own – just like our ensaladas.

Jicama, Apple and Chayote Salad With Pepita-Avocado Dressing 4 servings

¼ cup olive oil ½ cup water

7 tablespoons fresh lime juice (from 3 or 4 limes) 1 clove garlic ¼ packed cup coarsely chopped cilantro leaves and upper parts of stems, plus 1 tablespoon for optional garnish 1 packed tablespoon fresh dill, coarsely chopped, plus 1 teaspoon for optional garnish Flesh of 1 large, ripe avocado, cut into chunks 1¼ teaspoons kosher or sea salt ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 teaspoon whole-grain mustard ¼ cup raw, hulled pumpkin seeds (pepitas), plus 1 tablespoon for garnish 1 pound jicama, peeled and cut into julienne (matchsticks) 1 Granny Smith apple, peeled, cored and cut into julienne 1 pound firm chayote squash, peeled and cut into julienne Combine the oil, water, lime juice, garlic, cilantro, dill, avocado, salt, pepper, mustard and pepitas in a blender; puree to form a smooth dressing.

Combine the jicama, apple and chayote in a mixing bowl; add the dressing and toss until well coated.

Just before serving, garnish with the remaining tablespoon of pepitas, plus the tablespoon of cilantro and teaspoon of

dill, if using.

Nutrition per serving: 320 calories, 5 g protein, 28 g carbohydrates, 24 g fat, 4 g saturated fat, 0 mg cholesterol, 370 mg sodium, 12 g dietary fiber, 9 g sugar.

Crab, Radish and Cucumber Salad 4 servings

½ cup packed finely chopped basil leaves and tender stems ¼ cup packed finely chopped mint leaves ½ cup packed finely chopped parsley leaves and upper parts of stems

½ cup packed finely chopped chives

2 scallions, white and light-green parts, finely sliced 1 jalapeño pepper, stemmed and finely chopped (seeded, if desired, for less heat) 1⁄3 cup unseasoned rice vinegar 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice ¾ cup regular or low-fat mayonnaise (do not use nonfat) ½ teaspoon salt, or more as needed 1 pound jumbo lump crabmeat, cartilage removed 5 ounces or about 2 mini cucumbers, quartered lengthwise and sliced into ¼-inch pieces 4 ounces radishes or about 3 to 4 radishes, rinsed, quartered and sliced into ¼-inch pieces Whisk together the basil, mint, parsley, chives, scallions, jalapeño, rice vinegar, lime juice, mayonnaise and salt in a mixing bowl.

Fold in the crab, cucumber and radishes just until coated; let sit for at least 10 minutes before serving.

Taste, and add salt, as needed.

Nutrition per serving: 400 calories, 21 g protein, 4 g carbohydrates, 33 g fat, 5 g saturated fat, 105 mg cholesterol, 920 mg sodium, 2 g dietary fiber, 2 g sugar.

26 Perimenopause can last several years Dear Dr. K: I am in my early 40s. Over the past several months, my periods have become less regular. Sometimes my flow is lighter than normal; other times it’s heavier. Is this perimenopause?

Dear Reader: It could be, though you’re a bit young. As a woman approaches menopause, periods often become irregular. A woman is said to be in menopause after she has gone for one full year without periods.

The transition into menopause is called perimenopause. This phase begins when a woman notices changes in her cycle, usually in her mid-40s. It ends with menopause.

Perimenopause usually lasts three to five years – but it can take as few as two years or as many as eight years for some women.

A woman’s ovaries produce eggs and the female hormones estrogen and progesterone. These hormones control a woman’s periods and other processes in her body. As a woman approaches menopause, her ovaries make less and less of these hormones.

As hormone levels fall, a woman’s pattern of menstrual bleeding usually becomes irregular. A woman can have irregular periods for several months to years before her periods finally stop. Many women experience light, skipped or late periods during perimenopause. However, there also can be heavier and more prolonged bleeding during perimenopause. This may be caused by progesterone levels that drop faster than estrogen levels.

Another common symptom of perimenopause is hot flashes. A hot flash is a feeling of suddenly being hot, flushed and uncomfortable. Hot flashes come in bursts or flushes that usually last a few seconds to a few minutes. They are caused by changes in the way blood vessels relax and contract, and are thought to be related to the changes in a woman’s estrogen levels. They also might be related to brain hormone levels

As estrogen levels fall, the vagina’s natural lubricants also decrease. In some women, this causes vaginal dryness. The lining of the vagina gradually becomes thinner and less able to stretch. These changes can cause sex to be uncomfortable or painful. They also can lead to inflammation in the vagina.

Depression also may occur at a higher rate in perimenopausal women than in premenopausal women. And women with a history of depression are prone to flare-ups during perimenopause. (Though non-hormonal events such as career challenges and children leaving home may affect depression as much or more than hormone changes.) Weight gain also is common around perimenopause.

Some of the symptoms and complications of perimenopause improve with time – particularly the irregular bleeding. Other symptoms persist into menopause, such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness and depression.

We’ve discussed in this space before the belief that menopausal symptoms tend to last no more than five to 10 years might be wrong. In some women, the symptoms may last much longer.

Dear Abby: I’m DEAR ABBY obsessed with having sex. I Jeanne can’t stop. Ever Phillips since I was 8 I’ve been having sex, and now I’m 18. I have a boyfriend I’ve been dating since I was 8, and we can’t stop having sex.

I want to stop, but he doesn’t want to. I keep on doing it because he says if I don’t he’ll leave me.

Please help. What do I do? – Obsessed In Miami Dear Obsessed: There are worse things than losing a boyfriend who threatens to dump you if you don’t have sex with him. Chief among them is having sex with someone because you have been coerced. Because you feel you are “obsessed,” you might have a sex addiction.

Licensed psychotherapists treat people with sexual compulsive disorders, and self-help groups help individuals suffering because they can’t control their sexual behavior. A 12-step program that has been mentioned before in my column is Sexaholics Anonymous, which originated in 1979 and is based on the same principles as Alcoholics Anonymous. Its website is www.sa.org. For most players, bridge is a leisure-time activity; it is work only for the pros. However, both sometimes face a tempting play that is wrong.

Those who can resist that temptation will, in theory at least, do better.

In today’s deal, what is the tempting play that East must resist? South is in three no-trump, and West leads a fourth-highest spade four.

It was normal for North to employ Stayman to try to find a 4-4 heart fit; but when South denied a major, all North had done was give the defenders extra information about declarer’s hand.

At trick one, many an East would cover dummy’s spade five with the seven. However, when third hand’s highest card is below a nine, he should resist the temptation to play third hand high; he should give count. So, with a tripleton, he should play his lowest: here, the two. Even if dummy’s five wins the trick (declarer having started with, say, K-J-3), it will not matter.

In this deal, though, when West learns that his partner has three spades (it cannot be one, because South denied four spades in the auction), he knows South began with king-jack-doubleton. So, when in with the club king, he cashes his spade ace to drop the king and runs the suit to defeat the contract.

Note that this give-count play applies to both no-trump and suit contracts. Play low with an odd number or high with an even number.
