Joliet police investigating double homicide; ‘no witnesses at all’ JOLIET – Police are investigating a double homicide in Joliet.

Clark D. Travis Jr., 49, of Urbana, and Jonathan L. Fairley, 25, of Joliet, were found dead with gunshot wounds at 2:09 a.m. Monday in a maroon SUV parked in an alley in the 400 block of Sherman Street in Joliet.

Joliet police are investigating the incident as homicides. An autopsy has been scheduled for Tuesday to determine the exact cause of death, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office.

Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said both men appeared to have been shot in the head.

Joliet police were familiar with Travis and Fairley, Deputy Chief Al Roechner said.

According to Will County Jail records, Fairley has been arrested by police in the past three years on felony charges of possession of a controlled substance, driving on a revoked or suspended license, fleeing, residential burglary, criminal damage to property and aggravated battery.

Police had no information about what led to Fairley and Travis’ deaths as of Monday afternoon.

“There were no witnesses at all,” Roechner said. “Nobody in the neighbor-

hood heard any gunshots.”

The men were found by a passerby who noticed the SUV in the residential alley on the west side of Sherman Street.

“Somebody was walking in the alley and noticed the vehicle. Then he noticed the two subjects in the vehicle,” Roechner said. “We have no idea what happened. We need any help we can get.”

He said anyone with information can call Joliet police at 815-724-3020. People can also call Crime Stoppers of Will County at 1-800-323-6734.

According to the Coroner’s Office, the two men were pronounced dead at the scene at 4:38 a.m.

Feds subpoena Lincoln-Way for emails between former superintendent, board

fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Lincoln-Way District 210 received another federal subpoena – this time looking into, among other things, emails between former Superintendent Lawrence Wyllie and five board members.

The July 13 subpoena from the U.S. Attorney’s Office is the second subpoena sent to District 210 officials as part of a federal grand jury investigation. District officials also are being investigated by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Among the six items of requested records in the subpoena is one focusing on “any and all email communication” on district email servers between Wyllie and Board President Dee Molinare, Board Vice President Christine Glatz, board member Christopher Kosel and former board members Kevin Molloy and Arvid

Other items sought under the subpoena include: • Records related to student scholarship accounts and funds.

• Discussion of operating expense per pupil made or drafted by Wyllie from 2006 to 2013.

• Employment documents for three people that Tingley said directly relate to the controversial Superdog training facility on North property.

• Records related to life-safety renovations from 2006 to 2015.

A federal subpoena was also sent to the Frankfort Square Park District regarding the Superdog facility.

The subpoena follows a series of controversies for District 210 this year that include an unsuccessful lawsuit by residents to prevent North’s closure, the abrupt retirement of a longtime business official and a report outlining past improper accounting practices.

Silver Cross responds to rapid growth in surgery cases

fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Since the new Silver Cross Hospital was established in New Lenox in 2012, the campus has continued to expand to meet the growing health care needs in Will County.

The campus recently grew by 58 acres – now totaling 134 acres – and hospital officials plan to use 4 acres of the new land for an ambulatory surgery center that may be built by March 2018, pending state approval.

“Clearly, the campus has grown, and we’ve added new buildings, but inside those buildings we added a lot of new services,” said Ruth Colby, Silver Cross senior vice president of business development and chief strategy officer. “And the services have really been driven by the needs identified in Will County.”

The new growth of the campus represents new opportunities for the hospital, but plans for the land, which was rezoned recently by the village of New Lenox, have yet to be determined. New Lenox Mayor Tim Baldermann said village officials are excited about the expansion of the campus.

Silver Cross Hospital is conscientious regarding the village’s needs and works well with its officials, he said.

“They see the global picture. It’s not just about the hospital for them. They know how the village grows impacts them,” Baldermann said.

Colby said the expansion of Silver Cross goes back to 2007, when its Board of Directors was evaluating its options and decided the best one was building a replacement hospital. The option would offer better health care for patients and be less expensive than remodeling the old campus in Joliet, she said.

When the new hospital opened in February 2012, it had 289 beds, Colby said. In 2015, the hospital added more intensive care unit and rehabilitation beds, increasing total beds to 296, she said.

Silver Cross is going through outpatient expansion on its campus, improving accessibility to outpatient testing, she said.

“We have a much larger waiting room because the volume’s been really huge in outpatient testing,” she said.

Silver Cross is seeking approval from the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board for construction of an ambulatory surgery center on its new property to meet its rapidly growing need for surgeries. A hearing before the board on the project is tentatively scheduled for Sept. 13 in Springfield.

“We’ve had double-digit growth in surgical cases year over year,” Colby said.

DriveTime revote slated for Tuesday

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet City Council on Tuesday will consider changing its vote on DriveTime’s bid to put a usedcar dealership on Larkin Avenue.

The council voted, 6-2, against DriveTime on June 7.

But since then the city has been told the vacant Century Tile store could be put to use for a business that would buy blood and plasma, raising concerns among both staff and council members.

On the agenda Tuesday is a resolution to rescind the June vote and vote again on whether to approve the special use permit needed by DriveTime.

The matter was discussed briefly at a Monday workshop meeting.

Not at the meeting were representatives of neighborhood groups who had urged the vote against DriveTime.

City Manager Jim Hock reminded the council that it could not stop a blood and plasma center from going into the building at 1395 N. Larkin Ave. “There would be no special approval required by council,” Hock said.

“The property would remain the same – no landscaping, no fencing.”

The city did have certain requirements for DriveTime that would have come with the special use permit.

DriveTime attorneys said the company would invest $750,000 in the property, and car sales at the site would generate $840,000 in sales taxes for the city.

Arizona-based DriveTime has 139

dealerships in 13 states, including five in Illinois.

Hock told the council on Monday that the blood center would be one of three of four users in an alternative plan for the property. But he suggested trouble from such a business at the council’s last meeting when he noted that he worked in another city where a similar operation attracted people who would sell their blood for money to buy liquor.

Council members immediately began seeking options and agreed to reconsider the DriveTime proposal at the next meeting.

Habitat for Humanity

Meanwhile, another potential buyer of the property has emerged.

Will County Habitat for Humanity

is interested in the building as a potential new location for its ReStore, where the nonprofit sells used furniture, electronics and other goods to help fund the homes it builds for low-income residents.

Tim Brophy, board secretary for Will County Habitat for Humanity, said the site “would work really well for the ReStore operation.” He said Habitat for Humanity could also operate an electronics recycling center for Joliet at the site.

Brophy, however, was not at the Monday meeting. He said Habitat for Humanity will not try to interfere with the sale of the property to DriveTime.

“We simply would like to make an offer if it’s available,” he said. “We don’t want to torpedo anything that they’ve got going.”

Village Board OKs series of infrastructure measures

mmallory@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The village of Plainfield will soon have access to specific data about its ongoing downtown parking issue.

The Plainfield Village Board voted, 4-1, Monday night to approve a contract with Baxter & Woodman Engineering to complete a comprehensive study of parking space use downtown and to develop ideas for future parking improvements, at a total cost not to exceed $55,300.

Trustee Garrett Peck was absent and Trustee Ed O’Rourke voted “no.”

O’Rourke said he thinks the downtown district needs more parking spaces but said the money should be spent on constructing the parking spaces, rather than a study to potentially tell the village something it already knows.

The firm will study parking use for a week, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day to calculate how many spaces are used and how many are needed.

The board unanimously approved a contract with Infrastructure Management Services for a pavement condition survey in the amount not to exceed $106,900.

The Plainfield Village Board on Monday evening discussed a range of topics during a village board meeting, including a proposed new 3,200-square-foot building at 24210 W. Lockport St. Persons said the village should improve 15 to 20 lane miles of roadway per year to maintain its great rating by the firm.

IMS uses a van operated by a three-person crew to survey roadway conditions. The van is outfitted with 11 lasers on its front bumper and a minimum of three high-definition cameras to scan for failing pavement.

In other infrastructure news, the board unanimously approved a

$655,368 project with D Construction of Coal City. The project includes Lockport Street resurfacing, and improvements to parking lots at village hall and the public works building.

The work will be funded partially by Tax Incremental Financing district funds. The bid was 16 percent less than the engineer’s estimate, Persons said.

The board also approved a certificate of appropriateness for a proposed

new 3,200-square-foot building at 24210 W. Lockport St. in the village’s downtown historic district. The board then approved the site plan review for it, subject to stipulations.

Discussions are ongoing between neighboring property owners to potentially reach agreement on a shared-use driveway. The architect of the proposed building also addressed concerns about the color of the building, saying it would not be an issue.

Will County sees rise in assessed property values

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – For the first time in more than five years, each of the 24 townships in Will County will see an increase in assessed property value.

Last year was the first since 2009 in which overall property value in Will County saw an increase, in the amount of 2.8 percent. The upward trend has continued, Will County Chief Assessment Officer Rhonda Novak said.

“In the poor economy we were seeing decreases every year since 2009 or 2010,” Novak said. “We’re now seeing increases of 1 percent to 6.7 percent.”

Each township’s assessor has worked this year to find the market value of homes in their respective townships. The value is based on factors such as property characteristics, recent sales of similar area homes and a sales ratio study that takes the three previous years’ sales into account.

Based on this year’s assessment process, Plainfield Township saw the highest growth in assessed value, at 6.7 percent, followed by Joliet Township at 6.6 percent, according to a property assessment notice released by Novak’s office. Assessments will be published Wednesday and Thursday in The Herald-News.

A common misconception is that an increase in assessed value means an owner’s property taxes will automatically go up, Novak said. A tax hike depends on whether taxing bodies decide to set tax rates higher. But if property owners are not pleased with an assessment, they can file an appeal with the county’s Board of Review up to 30 days from the time of publication. Novak, however, recommended contacting township assessors first, adding that they are the ones with specific knowledge of neighborhoods and homes.

Plainfield Township sees jump in assessed value

Plainfield Township Assessor Erin Kljaich said that between 2008 and 2013, Plainfield Township’s assessed values went down 30 percent. Last year was the first notable increase, followed by a big jump this year. Kljaich said the spike is a result of more “valid sales” of homes, not foreclosures or bank sales.

Kljaich agreed with Novak that the township prefers if property owners contact the township assessor’s office before filing an appeal. Her office will explain how and why the assessed value was reached, “making it quicker and easier” for everyone.

Rising assessment rates statewide

Gov. Bruce Rauner weighed in this week on rising property taxes through a news release, stating that, “Illinois residents are being hit with record property tax increases in communities all around the state even though they already pay the highest property taxes in the nation.”

The news release stated that since 1990, property taxes have risen 3.3 times faster than Illinois median household incomes. He pushed for the General Assembly to pass his proposed reforms to lower property taxes.

“People are literally being driven from their homes by the failure of the General Assembly to enact the reforms that would stop this unnecessary destruction of the American Dream,” he said in the release.

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Customers at Morris Building & Loan in Morris may notice some minor changes, but overall their banking will be business as usual, according to The State Bank Group, which has acquired Harvard Savings bank.

As of Aug. 1, The State Bank Group has completed its acquisition of Harvard Savings Bank, which is the parent company of Morris Building & Loan, under a purchase and assumption agreement.

The State Bank Group’s parent company, Wonder Bancorp Inc., has acquired certain assets and liability of Harvard Savings Bank in the acquisition that started over a year ago.

“We’ve worked very hard to make sure changes to the customer are very minimal,” Dena Innes, of The

State Bank Group, said Monday.

For now, the name and personnel at the Morris branch will remain unchanged, as will be the case at the other Harvard Savings Bank locations in McHenry County. Innes said there may be some signage changes that customers notice.

The acquisition of Harvard Savings Bank has increased The State Bank Group’s number of banking locations from six to nine. This increase strengthens The State Bank Group’s presence in McHenry County and expands it to Grundy County.

“We look forward to providing our newest customers the local friendly service they have come to know and trust,” Stephen Mitchell, president of The State Bank Group, stated in a news release.

As of June 30, the assets of The State Bank Group total about $171 million and those of Harvard Savings Bank total about $141 million.

Police nab suspect in Manhattan gun shop break-in

MANHATTAN – Police apprehended a suspect Monday in a Manhattan gun shop break-in.

Manhattan police responded to an alarm before 6 a.m. Monday at Gibbs Custom Gunsmithing, 155 W. North St., according to a Manhattan Police Department news release.

Police arrived within minutes and noticed a broken window on the building.

They determined a suspect was inside and set up a perimeter with help from other law enforcement agencies, according to the news release.

The suspect was given commands to surrender but he refused and at 6:15 a.m. he fled from another window, leading to a foot chase, the news release stated.

Will County sheriff’s police apprehended the suspect on Sharp Drive but he was having difficulty breathing. He was transported to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox.

Charges in the incident were pending as

of Monday evening, Will County State’s Attorney’s Office spokesman Charles Pelkie said.

Laraway Road closure to start Friday at rail crossing in Joliet

JOLIET – As part of the improvements associated with the Illinois high-speed rail project, Laraway Road will be closed at the rail crossing between Route 53 and Brandon Road beginning 7 a.m. Friday, weather permitting, according to a news release from the city of Joliet.

There will be no access along Laraway Road to or from the intermodal facilities, landfills, fuel stations or quarries.

It is expected that the work will be completed by 6 p.m. Aug. 12.

A detour route will be posted using Interstate 80, Interstate 55 and Arsenal Road.

Drivers are advised to use caution and seek alternate routes when traveling in the area.

LOCKPORT – A Lockport man is charged with multiple offenses after police say he was caught burglarizing strangers’ vehicles early Saturday.

Kyle J. Baumann, 22, of the 1700 block of Maryanne Lane in Lockport, was arrested at 5:25 a.m. in the 600 block of 17th Street on charges of burglary to motor vehicle and pos- Kyle J. session of a controlled Baumann substance, according to a Lockport Police Department news release.

Baumann was observed by a resident going into unlocked cars, and when police arrived at the scene, they found him in a vehicle without the owner’s permission, the news release stated. Baumann also was in

possession of medication without a prescription, according to the news release.

Lockport officers found a large amount of stolen property on the scene. Some has been identified by its owner, but more remains unaccounted for.

It is believed that most of the vehicles were burglarized in the area of 17th Street and Maryanne Lane, the news release stated, however, property was found from as far away as 10th Street.

Baumann was taken to Will County Jail.

Anyone who believes they may have had property stolen in the early morning hours Saturday is encouraged to call the department’s investigations division at 815-838-2132.

Police urge residents to lock their doors any time they are away from their vehicle.

Independent candidate will not appeal ouster from Will County Board ballot

bokon@shawmedia.com Even the petition signature of her 101-year-old great-aunt was ruled invalid when she was thrown off the November ballot, Jody Thatcher said.

Thatcher, who is the township clerk in Wilton Township, said she will not appeal last week’s decision by an electoral board to remove her from the Will County Board contest.

But Thatcher did express some frustration with the process required to make an independent bid for election.

“The way the system is set up, it’s definitely difficult to run as an independent,” she said Friday.

Independents are required by state law to get more signatures on their nominating petitions, although they do have the advantage of not having to win a party primary to get on the ballot.

Thatcher was the only independent candidate for County Board on the ballot before the Will County Electoral Board ruled Wednesday that 639 of the signatures on her nominating petitions were not valid. That left her 247 signatures short of the 1,251 needed.

Thatcher issued a statement saying she was disappointed in herself for not filing enough valid signatures to get on the ballot. She described the electoral board as “very professional” but also described the difficulty of getting sufficient signatures to run as an independent.

“She was very proud and excited to sign my nomination petition; just to find out it was rejected because her current signature did not match the signature on file which was from 1940, when she originally registered to vote,” Thatcher wrote.

One way a signature is tested in an objection hearing is to compare it with the same person’s signature on file with the county. Thatcher said that for many of the signatures of her petition signers, the most recent available were decades old.

The signature standards are set by case law, or legal precedent, in determining what is valid or not, said Judith Wiedmeyer, chief deputy for the Will County Clerk’s Office. Wiedmeyer was on the electoral board that ruled on Thatcher’s petition signatures.

She noted the board was bound by law to compare the signatures with those on record with the county.

“I think we were pretty liberal if we could see at least a few of the letters,” Wiedmeyer said of the signature comparisons. “But it we can’t see anything that’s a resemblance, that’s something we have to disallow.”

Thatcher said she plans to run for County Board in 2018 and has not yet decided whether she will do so under a party label.

to the types of surgeries that can be performed at the center, according to a July 11 modification letter from the hospital that also has testimony from medical staff supporting the center’s creation.

“Our physicians desire to work in an ambulatory surgery center because it’s more efficient,” Colby said.

The Silver Cross campus is growing in response to health needs; its medical staff, which has doubled in size; more physicians choosing to work at the hospital; and the population of Will County growing and aging, she said.

Silver Cross works with Will County government on the Mobilizing for Action through Planning and Partnerships initiative to assess health needs.

Another factor driving the growth is patient satisfaction, Colby said.

Baldermann said he knows there will be more development of retail, hotel and restaurant businesses in the area of the village where Silver Cross is located, but he would like to see medical expansion as well.

“Quality health care means more to a community, in my opinion,” he said.

The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – Gloria DeHaven, the daughter of vaudeville stars who carved out her own successful career as the bright-eyed, vivacious star of Hollywood musicals and comedies of the 1940s and ’50s, died Saturday in Las Vegas. She was 91.

After a decades-long absence, DeHaven returned to films in 1997 with “Out at Sea,” playing a mature woman who has a shipboard romance with Jack Lemmon.

Scott was born on Sept.

3, 1948, in Joliet, to Theodore and Dolores Colabuono. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Nijole Colabuono; his son, Peter Colabuono; daughter-in-law, Grace; grandson, Gabriel; and his daughter, Marisa Colabuono and her husband, Henry. He is also survived by his mother, Dolores; and his two brothers, Alan and Gary. Last, but not least, he leaves behind his two beloved dogs, Sam and Figgy.

Prior to his retirement, Scott was the CEO of Fantastic Sam’s Hair Salons, after a long career in finance with some of our country’s largest companies.

Scott was a member of St. Joseph’s parish and graduated from Joliet Catholic High School and Lewis University. He served 2 years in the U.S. Army after college.

Scott treasured his family and friends and was a caring and generous person who was loved by many. He was especially fond of the water, and loved splitting his time between Marblehead and East Pond in Smithfield, Maine.

He will always be remembered.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, Aug. 5, 2016, at 10 a.m. at Waterside Cemetery in Marblehead.

Illinois insurers seek premium hikes The ASSOCIATED PRESS

CHICAGO – Health insurance premiums for Illinois residents who buy coverage through the Affordable Care Act’s marketplace could increase by as much as 45 percent, according to proposals submitted by insurers and made public Monday.

The leading insurer on Illinois’ exchange, Blue Cross Blue Shield, is proposing increases for 2017 ranging from 23 percent to 45 percent for individual health care plans, according to proposals posted by Healthcare.gov. Another insurer, Coventry Health Care of Illinois, proposed rate increases as high as 21 percent.

Harken Health Insurance Company has proposed a nearly 29 percent hike in individual premiums and Health Alliance Medical Plans Inc. a more than 28 percent increase.

Naperville girl is youngest to hit 48 states’ highest peaks

NAPERVILLE – A 12-year-old Naperville resident is the youngest girl to climb to the highest point in each of the lower 48 states.

The Highpointers Club, a membership organization for hikers climbing the highest peaks in each state, confirmed Lucy Westlake’s record, the Daily Herald reported. The club said the previous record was set by a 17-year-old Kristen Kelliher of Vermont in 2011.

Club member and Highpointers Foundation Lead Director Dave Covill said achieving this goal at an early age is an amazing feat.

“That’s extremely impressive when you consider that the previous record-holder was 17 and the third place was 18,” he said.

Lucy’s first climb was on a more than 1,300-foot mountain in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula near her family’s cabin. She ran, climbed and explored on the 6-kilometer route.

Trampoline park injuries jump as the trend spreads

CHICAGO – Trampoline park injuries have soared as the indoor jumping trend has spread.

That’s according to a study that shows annual U.S. emergency room visits jumped 12-fold for park-related injuries from over five years. Injuries included broken legs, neck sprains and concussions, but 90 percent of the injured children and adults were treated and released.

The study by researchers at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in Hartford was published Monday in Pediatrics. They analyzed a national injury database.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends against children using trampolines at home or parks and said injury rates at trampoline parks should be monitored.

CHICAGO – Chicago police said the 65 murders recorded in the city during July are the most seen during the month since 2006.

Chicago has recorded 381 homicides so far in 2016, compared with 264 murders through July 31, 2015.

Police said 2,394 people have been shot so far this year. In the same time period last year, 1,564 people had been shot.

Carbondale officer shot, wounded during chase

CARBONDALE – Authorities said someone speeding away from a shooting scene in southern Illinois opened fire on pursuing officers, seriously wounding one before getting away.

The Carbondale Police Department said in a news release that the shooting occurred late Sunday after officers on patrol heard shots fired and drove toward the gunfire.

The officers tried to stop a tan, fourdoor vehicle as it sped from the scene, but the driver didn’t pull over.

Someone in the vehicle fired at the officers, hitting one. The officer was in serious condition Monday at a St. Louis hospital.

Authorities said the officers didn’t return fire and the vehicle got away.

The Illinois State Police are leading the investigation. Multiple law enforcement agencies are assisting.

NEW YORK – Neither Hillary Clinton nor Donald Trump is seen as likely to unify the U.S. if elected, but pessimism about the Republican candidate is far greater, according to a poll released Monday that reflects deep division in the country.

The survey from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found 73 percent of Americans believe Trump will further divide the country, compared with 43 percent saying that about Clinton.

While only about one-third of people believe Clinton’s election would bring unity, that’s still double the figure for Trump – 34 percent compared with 17 percent.

Even among Republicans, just 38 percent saw their nominee as generating more national unity.

Pilot kept flying despite drunken driving record

Military families want apology from Trump

Their sons were killed in Iraq about a week apart.

So when Karen Meredith heard the grieving parents of a decorated Muslim Army officer being belittled by Donald Trump, she cried.

Meredith said she hadn’t wept over her son’s death for a long time, but the Republican presidential nominee “ripped the wounds right open again.”

“You don’t attack one Gold Star family, because if you do, you’re attacking a lot of us,” Meredith, 62, of Mountain View, California, said Monday.

Trump has been engaged in an emotionally charged feud with Khizr and Ghazala Khan, whose son, Capt. Humayun Khan, was killed in Iraq by a suicide bomber June 8, 2004. Trump stoked outrage by implying that Ghazala Khan did not speak while standing alongside her husband at last week’s Democratic convention because of their Muslim faith.

And he disputed their right to question his grasp of the Constitution.

Some of America’s Gold Star families, or those who lost loved ones in war, have demanded that Trump apologize.

Meredith organized a letter to Trump that has been signed by 23 families so far. She said she did so after seeing so much “hurt and anger” among Gold Star families on social media.

Trump refused to back down Monday, complaining anew that he has been “viciously attacked” by the Khans.

Meredith’s son and only child, Army 1st Lt. Kenneth Michael Ballard, was killed during a firefight in Iraq on May 30, 2004, at age 26.

“Most people in this country, before this, did not know what a Gold Star family was, let alone what our sacrifice was,” Meredith said. “For

Celeste Zappala, who also signed the letter, said the grief that Gold Star families suffer earns them the right to say whatever they want. Zappala’s son, Army Sgt. Sherwood R. Baker, was also killed in Iraq in 2004. She said she cried after hearing Trump’s comments, too.

“Mr. Trump has made a firestorm happen that didn’t need to happen and that insults everybody who served,” said Zappala, of Philadelphia.

“Nobody should say anything other than ‘Thank you for your service.’ ” Both Zappala and Meredith stressed that they aren’t speaking on behalf of all Gold Star families, and that there are others who back Trump.

Pennsylvania, said she is happy the Khans got to share their son’s story and hopes the backlash prompts both candidates to address Gold Star issues.

Gold Star families represent such a small fraction of the population, “it’s super important that the people making the decision to send men and women off to war understand what that means,” said Borek, who hasn’t decided which candidate she will vote for.

Prominent Republicans spoke out Monday against Trump. Arizona Sen. John McCain, a prisoner of war in Vietnam, said that while the party has bestowed upon Trump the nomination, “it is not accompanied by unfettered license to defame those who are the best among us.”

The Veterans of Foreign Wars said it won’t tolerate anyone berating a Gold Star family member for exercising his or her right to free speech.

President Barack Obama addressed the Disabled American Veterans’ annual conference in Atlanta on Monday.

He didn’t mention Trump by name but implicitly rebuked him for criticizing the Khan family.

Study: Rio water puts athletes, tourists at risk

RIO DE JANEIRO – Just days ahead of the Olympic Games the waterways of Rio de Janeiro are as filthy as ever, contaminated with raw human sewage teeming with dangerous viruses and bacteria, according to a 16-month-long study commissioned by The Associated Press.

Not only are some 1,400 athletes at risk of getting violently ill in water competitions, but the AP’s tests indicate that tourists also face potentially serious health risks on the golden beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana.

The AP’s survey of the aquatic Olympic and Paralympic venues has revealed consistent and dangerously high levels of viruses from the pollution, a major black eye on Rio’s Olympic project that set off alarm bells among sailors, rowers and open-water swimmers.

Since the AP released the initial results last July, athletes have been taking elaborate precautions to prevent illnesses that could potentially knock them out of the competition, including preventively taking antibiotics, bleaching oars and donning plastic suits and gloves in a bid to limit contact with the water.

But antibiotics combat bacterial infections, not viruses. And the AP investigation found that infectious adenovirus readings – tested with cell cultures and verified with molecular biology protocols – turned up at nearly 90 percent of the test sites over 16 months of testing.

You just would not see this.”

While athletes take precautions, what about the 300,000 to 500,000 foreigners expected to descend on Rio for the Olympics? Testing at several of the city’s world-famous beaches has shown that in addition to persistently high viral loads, the beaches often have levels of bacterial markers for sewage pollution that would be cause for concern

abroad – and sometimes even exceed Rio state’s lax water safety standards.

In light of the AP’s findings, Harwood had one piece of advice for travelers to Rio: “Don’t put your head under water.”

Danger is lurking even in the sand.

Samples from the golden beaches at Copacabana and Ipanema revealed high levels of viruses, which recent studies have suggested can pose health risks – particularly to babies and small children.

“You know how quickly an infant can get dehydrated and have to go to the hospital,” Harwood said. “That’s the scariest point to me.”

While local authorities including

Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes have acknowledged the failure of the city’s water cleanup efforts, calling it a “lost chance” and a “shame,” Olympic officials continue to insist that Rio’s waterways will be safe for athletes and visitors.

“We would never, ever risk the health or the condition of any athlete for a competition,” said Mario Andrada, chief spokesman for the local organizing committee. “So the health of the athletes is our first priority. And the athletes don’t run a risk sailing in Guanabara Bay.” The committee previously said bacterial testing conducted by Rio state authorities has shown the aquatic venues to be within state guidelines.

The crux of the issue lies in the different types of testing used to determine the health and safety of recreational waters.

Bacterial tests measure levels of coliforms – different types of bacteria that tend not to cause illnesses themselves but are indicators of the presence of other, potentially harmful sewage-borne pathogens such as other bacteria, viruses and protozoa that can cause cholera, dysentery, hepatitis A and typhoid, among other diseases.

Bacterial tests are the worldwide standard because they’re cheap and easy.

But there’s a growing consensus that they’re not ideal for all climates, as bacteria break down quickly in tropical weather and salty marine waters.

In contrast, viruses have been shown to survive for weeks, months or even years – meaning that in tropical Rio, low bacterial markers can be completely out of step with high virus levels.

McDonald’s says it’s nixing some unpalatable ingredients

The Associated Press NEW YORK – McDonald’s, which is trying to shake its image for serving processed junk food, said Monday it is eliminating some unpalatable ingredients from its most popular menu items.

That includes making Chicken McNuggets and other items without artificial preservatives, and removing high-fructose corn syrup from its burger buns. McDonald’s did not immediately respond when asked about which specific preservatives are being removed.

The changes come as the world’s biggest burger chain fights to win back customers after three straight years of declining guest counts at its established U.S. locations. Major restaurant chains are scrambling to step up the image of their food as they face more

competition from smaller rivals promising wholesome alternatives.

“Why go to the position of trying to defend them, if the consumer is saying, ‘I prefer not to have that particular ingredient in my food’ ?” Mike Andres, president of McDonald’s U.S., said during an event at the company’s headquarters in Oak Brook, Illinois, about its “food journey.”

How meaningful the changes are to customers remains to be seen.

Michael Jacobson, executive director for the Center for Science in the Public Interest, said the moves by McDonald’s don’t seem to address the big-picture problem with restaurant food – the overabundance of calories.

For instance, he said, swapping out high-fructose for sugar doesn’t make burger buns any healthier.

In the past year and a half, McDonald’s also has switched to butter from

margarine for its Egg McMuffins and added kale and spinach to its salads. Its rivals have made changes as well.

Dunkin’ Donuts, for instance, has promised to put more egg in its egg patty. Currently, the patty looks like a fried egg but is a composite of ingredients including egg whites, water, egg yolks and modified corn starch.

As part of its own push to remove artificial ingredients, Taco Bell has said it would switch to actual black pepper rather than “black pepper flavor.” That’s even as it continues trying to lure new diners with indulgent concoctions and neon-colored drinks.

Subway has introduced a “rotisserie chicken” and “carved turkey” that have more texture and look more natural than its regular chicken strips and turkey. It is offering both versions to avoid alienating fans who might not want any changes.

But convincing people it serves wholesome food is particularly important for McDonald’s, which long has courted families with its Happy Meals.

The company’s sales in its flagship U.S. market have showed improvement, helped by the fanfare over the introduction of an all-day breakfast menu in October. In the most recent quarter, however, McDonald’s said sales edged up just 1.8 percent at established locations. That signaled that any excitement from all-day Egg McMuffins already could be losing steam.

McDonald’s had signaled that tweaks to its menu were in store, telling investors during a presentation in late 2014 it was evaluating its cooking procedures and ingredients as part of its push to fix its struggling businesses.

“We need to think about our ingredient labels as being much smaller,” Andres said at the time.

Now take a look at Omega Healthcare Investors (OHI-$34.50). This is one of those special real estate investment trusts that have rewarded shareholders with increasing dividends. This REIT’s dividend went from 18 cents a quarter in 2003 to 58 cents a quarter last year. And in that time frame,

shares went from $3 to the mid-$40s.

OHI’s dividend, now at 60 cents a quarter, trades with an attractive yield of 6.9 percent. It’s a dividend that I believe will be raised again next year.

OHI, founded in 1992, provides capital and financing to its portfolio of over 900 long-term care properties – with a specific emphasis on skilled nursing facilities – in 42 states. Management has grown revenues from $101 million in 2003 to an estimated $851 million this year. Certainly, CEO C. Taylor Pickett, CFO Bob Stephenson and COO Daniel J. Booth have done a yeoman’s job of running this company. OHI’s capable management has put its competition to shame.

OHI’s return on assets is 3.6 percent, versus the 2 percent industry average.

Return on equity is 8.7 percent, versus the industry’s 4.3 percent. Operating margins are 51.3 percent, versus 26.9 percent. Net margins are 28.8 percent, versus 23.7 percent. The price-earnings ratio is 25-to-1, versus 43-to-1. Revenue growth (three-year average) is 28.5 percent, versus 17.3 percent. And net income growth (three-year average) is 23 percent, versus minus 2.6 percent.

So compared with the industry’s

benchmark numbers, OHI appears to have a formidable record. And Wall Street believes that revenues and earnings will be nicely higher this year.

However, I must tell you that some brokerages don’t like this stock.

Charles Schwab doesn’t care a whit for OHI. Market Edge recommends “avoiding” the stock. Ned Davis Research is neutral. And Bank of America Merrill Lynch gives it an “underperform” rating. (BofA/Merrill is now allowed to use the word “sell” when analyzing stocks.) And though Vanguard, BlackRock, J.P. Morgan, Invesco, Cohen & Steers and State Street own about 80 percent of OHI’s shares, only Jefferies and JMP Securities have “buy” recommendations on the stock.

However, next year’s median target price is $42.50. If you decided to buy OHI, you might be able to earn a 20 percent principal gain during the coming dozen months and enjoy getting a 6.9 percent dividend (or higher) while you wait.

Ex-NFL coach boosts Illini-related business

The (Champaign) News-Gazette CHAMPAIGN – At this time last year – June 30 – the Block I had sold about 600 student season tickets in the north end zone of Memorial Stadium.

As of two weeks ago, that number had topped 1,000.

At last year’s Quarterback Club golf outing, 84 people played the 18hole scramble at the Orange and Blue Course.

At this month’s outing, 128 hit the links.

Across the board, all things Illini football – from tickets to T-shirts, marketing efforts to media requests – are trending upward.

Call it the Lovie Smith Effect.

Since the former Chicago Bears coach was announced as the new man in charge of Illinois football, the buzz surrounding the program has remained constant, and it will only continue to grow as Smith gets closer to coaching his first game, 65 days from now against Murray State.

Champaign’s two Gameday Spirit stores have had trouble keeping their

Lovie Smith T-shirts in stock. There are two versions: one, a campaign-like shirt celebrating Smith and new Athletic Director Josh Whitman that reads “Lovie/Whitman ’16”; the other, an orange T-shirt with “Lovie” in blue letters across the front.

“Nothing we have is touching the numbers of that orange shirt,” said Cory Shumard, retail manager at Gameday Spirit, which sells official UI apparel.

Retail folks use the term “turn” to describe an item that sells out completely, then sells out again when it’s restocked.

Gameday Spirit has gone through “seven or eight” turns of the orange Lovie T. “I don’t know the exact numbers, but it’s literally in the thousands of shirts sold,” Shumard said.

Since the Lovie-themed apparel was introduced shortly after his hiring in March, Gameday Spirit has reaped the benefits – big time.

“We’ve proceeded to have the best April and May we’ve had in at least 10 years,” Shumard said.

Outside the Gameday locations is a yard sign similar to the ones you see around town advocating for a particu-

lar political candidate. With the same design as the “Lovie/Whitman ’16” T-shirt, Gameday has cardboard signs on display that are not for sale.

That hasn’t stopped a few people around town from securing their own.

“We’ve had a couple stolen from each location,” Shumard said. “We’re not allowed to sell those, but I’ll take it as a compliment of the popularity of those two gentlemen.”

From a marketing perspective, UI officials have been doing all they can to promote the Illini brand by using the popularity of their new coach.

In April, a large billboard of Smith decked out in Illinois gear was erected in the heart of the Loop in downtown Chicago. It was well-received.

“Obviously, with the name brand that Coach has, he’s definitely part of the plan from a creative standpoint and a marketing standpoint,” said UI Associate AD Brad Wurthman, the department’s point person for marketing and fan development.

There are no specific plans yet for what comes next, but get ready to see a whole lot of Lovie as the season approaches.

“You’re going to see him in a TV spot, a print ad, a digital ad,” Wurthman vowed. “He will very much be included in the content we provide.”

When it comes to attendance at Memorial Stadium, there’s nowhere to go but up.

Officially, Illinois ranked 12th in the 14-school Big Ten in home attendance last season, averaging 41,342 fans.

That’s paid attendance, however.

Only once did more than 40,000 fans actually pass through the turnstiles in 2015, according to official figures obtained by The News-Gazette via open records request. Memorial Stadium was more than half-empty for four of six games in Champaign last fall.

UI Associate AD Jason Heggemeyer says season ticket sales are up about 4,000 from last year. That group includes 1,000 people who’d never been UI football season-ticket holders at any time in the past.

“To have 1,000 new customers is big for us and something we want to build on for sure,” Heggemeyer said.

Heggemeyer said Illinois is trending toward having 30,000 season tickets sold for this season.

Mongiardo happy to be reunited with Slammers manager Isom

cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet Slammers manager Jeff Isom wasn’t happy when he learned that his friend Chris Mongiardo was being replaced as Lake Erie’s manager in late June.

After all, they had worked together on the Crushers’ staff in 2013, when the Isom-led squad won the Frontier League’s East Division and lost to Schaumburg for the championship.

But Isom was determined to make

the best of a bad situation by reuniting with Mongiardo, who officially joined the Slammers as a coach over the All-Star break with his emphasis being the same as when they worked together in Lake Erie, dealing with the pitchers.

“We worked together one year when we went to the championship, but I’ve known him for years because when I was in the league previously, he was in Richmond and we battled each other many times and I knew that he was a great baseball mind,”

Isom said. “He was from the Cleveland area, so when I got the Lake Erie job, Chris was my first hire.

“What he does for me is make my job so easy. He’s working these pitchers nonstop. He’s got a good relationship with the pitchers, but also a different relationship with them, since he can get on their butts when he needs to but also knows when he needs to pat someone on the back. He’s catching in the bullpen, throwing batting practice and setting up everything.”

Isom basically has had to do it all

by himself throughout most of the season, a daunting task for any manager.

Needless to say, it’s a huge boost to have someone to strategize with.

“When I was doing it previous to Chris being here, I had to pretty much do everything, so it’s taken a lot off of my plate,” Isom said. “I was throwing every round of batting practice, doing all of the paperwork and all of the player moves. Now we collaborate and work together.

Amazingly, it stayed that way until the 16th inning, when Joliet’s Kevin Mampe (Lincoln-Way Central, St. Francis) ripped a double off the wall to knock in the go-ahead. Unfortunately, a potential second run on the play was out at the plate on a disputed call.

That wound up being huge because the Muskies scored once in the bottom of the 16th on three straight singles after two were out to create a 2-all tie.

In the bottom of the 17th for Beecher, Brandon Mendoza (USF) singled

and Brett Velon (Joliet Junior College) belted a walkoff home run for a 4-2 victory, sending the Muskies to the NABF World Series beginning Thursday at Battle Creek, Michigan.

“This is definitely the toughest one ever,” said Dirtbags manager Kevin Campbell, whose team also finished second to Beecher in each of the previous two regionals after earning a World Series berth in 2013. “The guys I have had for three years, to watch them battle for 17 innings the way they did, it was an emotional loss.”

The Dirtbags went 4-2 in the regional, and their pitching was outstanding throughout, not only throughout the 26 grueling innings that were played Sunday.

“Our pitching was fabulous the entire tournament,” Campbell said.

“It’s been that way the last four years down there.”

Isom was pleased to see such a good baseball man replace him as Lake Erie’s manager and wasn’t surprised that he had fine pitching staffs during his three seasons at the helm.

“When I left in 2013, he took over the managing position in Lake Erie,” Isom said. “He did a nice job and took a team to the playoffs. He’s a huge baseball guy with an outstanding mind and his focus is just baseball. He can remember stuff from five years ago while I’m thinking forward and he’s remembering stuff behind us, so we work very well together in that aspect.

“It was unfortunate that he ended up not having that position in Lake Erie, but the way I looked at it was, ‘Wow, now I have an opportunity to bring him on.’ I had to sell our owner, Nick Semaca, on the idea, and to me it was a no-brainer and we got him in here. It’s made life a lot easier for me, and a lot of our success that we’re having right now is due to him.”

While disappointed that his managing stint had come to an end, Mongiardo didn’t need to take much time to consider whether he wanted

“It’s definitely good to be back with Jeff,” Mongiardo said. “He’s one of the best managers in the league and we worked good together and I liked working for him. It was unfortunate what happened in Lake Erie, but things happen for a reason and hopefully it works out for the best.

“It’s really tough to try to manage on your own. But I will say this, the team’s trainer (Andrew Gates) was almost like an assistant coach for him

and deserves a lot of credit. He did an unbelievable job and without him, I don’t know if Jeff could have gotten through it. Jeff was doing everything, so I’m just glad that I was able to come over here and help him out.”

Shortly after being let go by Lake Erie, Mongiardo was already hearing from Isom.

“I think Jeff called before I got fired,” Mongiardo joked. “He ran it by me pretty much the day after it happened, and I just needed a couple of

No doubt that Cubs’ victory Sunday night was special. However, the battle in Kankakee is not likely to be duplicated anytime soon, either.

“I talked with the Beecher coach afterward,” Campbell said. “He said he had never been involved in a 17-inning game in his 25 years of coaching.”

When you consider what was at stake, and that the two rivals faced off for 26 innings on the same Sunday afternoon and evening, you have storybook material. It was one of those where it’s a shame somebody had to lose.

It didn’t take long for the new coach to be able to provide advice about the team’s pitchers, which Isom will gladly accept since both the starters and relievers will likely be critical factors in whether the team with an explosive offense advances to the postseason.

“I had a little bit of an idea on the starters but didn’t know too much about the bullpen,” Mongiardo said.

“It took me about a week or so that maybe we could use some guys in different ways or use them to his advantage. I’m not jumping up and down to catch in the pen all of the time, but they need it now. It doesn’t always matter how well they’re throwing in the pen, but certain guys you can tell when the ball is coming out of their hand and that helps.”

Mongiardo realizes that the Slammers’ bats will carry them a ways, but knows that the squad must receive good outings from the starters and get better efforts from their relievers.

“They have an above-average lineup up and down and when they get it all clicking, they’re pretty good, so we’re going to be in every game,” Mongiardo said. “We’ve got good arms in the pen, but they just have to come together a little bit. And even if a starter doesn’t give us a good start, someone who comes in early can still settle a game down and win it.”

Those fortunate and alert enough to be able to stay up late Sunday night were treated to an incredible baseball game.

The Cubs hosted the Seattle Mariners in the national Sunday night telecast, and things happened in that game that you seldom see.

To say Cubs manager Joe Maddon is outside the box with some of his strategy is an understatement. His unusual – did someone suggest brilliant?

– moves paid off as the Cubs rallied from a 6-0 deficit to beat the Mariners, 7-6, in 12 innings in what some are calling one of the best baseball games of the season.

Earlier Sunday, there was another game – on a different level – that also deserves recognition as a classic.

The Joliet Dirtbags entered the championship finals of the NABF Regional at Kankakee Community College as the one-loss team in the double-elimination tournament. The Beecher Muskies were unbeaten.

Area pitchers enjoy the exposure, but remained focused

Shaw Media correspondent JOLIET – When the collegiate coaches are lined up behind the backstop, with their radar guns, stopwatches and clipboards, it can be intimidating.

That was the scene Tuesday through Thursday at the annual Midwest Classic Baseball at Plainfield South.

Team Illinois White had three pitchers from the Will County area that experienced the crowded confines just behind home plate.

Billy Pierce from Plainfield East, Tyler Talbot from Minooka and Jordan Mikel from the newly crowned summer champion, Plainfield South.

“This has been a great experience playing on this team,” said Pierce, who will be a junior on the Bengals’ squad.

“It just shows that all the hard work you do really has paid off. This team has been a fun group in a very short period of time. We have fun in the dugout, which is important on any team.

“Sure, I know what’s going on behind the screen, but I can’t worry about that. I have to go to the mound and do what I do. I block all that other stuff out.”

When asked about what lies ahead the remainder of the summer, Pierce was quick to point out another sport that is coming up.

“Football is right around the corner and I play wide receiver,” he said.

“Football will help me get stronger, and I believe my future is in baseball.

I still need to get my velocity up, but this has been a great experience. This has been a great group to be around.”

Talbot, who will be a senior for coach Jeff Petrovic’s Indians next spring, sees opportunities for the future from being a part of this team and week.

“This provides great exposure to get to the next level,” he said. “I know who’s behind the plate, but you can’t be concerned with that, just go play baseball and things will work out. Right now, in state or out, I just want to be noticed and have a shot at playing in college.

“I’m working on getting my velocity up and the summer is not quite done with baseball. I have two more travel ball tournaments, then it’s on to the football field as a receiver.”

Mikel has had a whirlwind last couple of weeks with baseball. Along with travel ball commitments, he was a key member of the Cougars’ summer title run. That tournament concluded Mon-

“I have one more travel tournament, then it’s time for a break and then getting back to training for next year. It was an honor to be chosen for Team Illinois this week. To be picked to play with some of the best players in the state was real good.

“We won the summer title on Monday, played the Midwest Classic on our home field and I was at Wrigley on Wednesday night to see the Cubs win – pretty wild week.”

If injury bug hits, Bears could be in big trouble

“Everybody starts off a nobody, sometimes you don’t know that until they get the opportunity. So it gives you a chance to look at other guys and we don’t wait for anybody.”

Make no mistake, Fox is not looking for a Lou Gehrig to replace Long.

He is just pleased with the opportunity to get a longer look at some of the new kids on the block because right now by his definition they are a collection of nobodies.

“Cody Whitehair is a rookie draft pick and Ted Larsen is a new guy to us,” Fox said. “So they are getting the reps there and are getting more familiar with our system and it gives them an opportunity.

“When Kyle gets back, obviously he’ll plug back in, but those reps are very valuable for those guys moving forward, whether it’s in a backup role or someone gets nicked in a game and they got to go in.”

Actually with Matt Slauson in San Diego, one of those two will have to start at left guard and Whitehair looks like the favorite.

“He had a bit of a setback when he had the injury (last season),” Fox said. “I thought he was coming along petty good, He did miss that time, that is hard coming back from injury, especially as a rookie. But I liked his growth and development during the off-season program, and I like what I’ve seen from him so far this year.”

Bobby Massie is one of the potential stalwarts of Ryan Pace’s 2016 unrestricted free agent class and a huge 6-6, 320-pound run-blocking specialist who will be an upgrade over Jordan Mills – and maybe even Long at right tackle – but was deemed expendable

by Arizona after four seasons.

The Bears will run right a lot behind Long and Massie, but can the newcomer protect Cutler?

And lastly there is the ultimate protection question: Can Charles Leno, Jr. reward the confidence Fox and Pace clearly have in him at left tackle?

There is more than one pro scout out there who questions where that confidence is coming from.

Depth is a huge question as well.

Amini Silatolu will challenge for playing time at guard once his knee is completely rehabbed, but the swing tackle at the moment appears to be Nick Becton.

No offense to the Becton family but ...

So the long and short of it is this: If Massie, Grasu, Whitehair and Leno Jr. are all at the front end of solid NFL careers, the offense should be at least somewhat improved.

But if any one or two of them prove to be less than the real deal, the Bears have a real problem.

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – The Bears’ first off day of camp comes Tuesday at an opportune time with several players sidelined because of injuries.

Zach Miller did not practice Monday, as he is in the concussion protocol, having experienced delayed symptoms on Sunday.

“I think he felt a little funny last night, didn’t feel as good this morning,” John Fox said. “So we just shut it down and he’ll go through the protocol.”

Eddie Royal left practice early and

is also in the concussion protocol.

The other players who did not finish practice because of injuries included Derek Keaton (leg), Josh Bellamy (ankle), Ben Braunecker (ankle) and Marquis Jackson (hamstring strain).

Braunecker was seen in a walking boot later in practice.

Khari Lee (shoulder), Terry Williams (shoulder), Kyle Fuller (ankle sprain) and Leonard Floyd (shoulder) were limited.

Floyd, the team’s top pick, has been at full-go for only one practice during training camp, but Fox was pleased with what he saw in the spring to be confident about what the outside linebacker can eventually bring.

“I think it was kind of an untimely illness was part of that coming into camp. It happens; guys get sick,” he said. “But he’s been into pretty good.

He did a lot of good stuff in the offseason and he’ll continue to improve as

we go.”

Kyle Long (calf), Roy Robertson-Harris (heat illness) and Nick Kwiatkoski (hamstring) did not practice.

A few dust-ups: During the fifth practice in a row, tempers flared three times at Monday’s session. The biggest skirmish involved offensive linemen Adrian Bellard and Ted Larsen and linebacker Christian Jones. Deon Bush and Deonte Thompson had a brief scuffle. Late in practice Gannon Sinclair shoved Harold Jones-Quartey after the safety was physical with Sinclair near the sideline. Each of the battles ended quickly.

“It’s part of football,” Fox said. “I mean, it’s a waste of energy sometimes. It’s a long practice, it’s grueling by design, but they are aggressive people.”

Hoyer to Carey: The top offensive play of the day came when Brian Hoy-

er dropped a pretty pass in the bucket to Ka’Deem Carey down the sideline on a wheel route.

“Been practicing on that over the shoulder catch all day and all year,” Carey said.

The third-year back has only eight career receptions, so it’s certainly good to get him more opportunities as a receiver to help his competition for reps against Jacquizz Rodgers and Jordan Howard, as Jeremy Langford is probably the most polished pass catcher of the group.

Quick hits: Akiem Hicks drew the most cheers for the defense when he stopped Langford at the line of scrimmage. … Daniel Braverman continued his strong camp with a diving catch. … The Bears return to Bourbonnais Wednesday for three consecutive practices before Saturday’s practice at Soldier Field for Family Fest.

There is a perception around the 2016 edition of the Chicago Bears defense. Justifiably, I think that they will be greatly improved.

The prognosis on offense is less clear. Jay Cutler is the Chicago Bears quarterback of the present and future. There is enough young talent at running back and wide receiver that both could develop into solid position groups, and tight end, while clearly not a strength of this team, doesn’t have to be a liability.

But the likelihood of future success on offense is very much an unknown right now because it will all be dictated by the play of an offensive line that is at best a work in progress.

The one sure thing in the Bears’ front wall, Kyle Long, is watching from the sidelines with what is hoped to be a minor calf strain. Long should be fine by opening day.

While he struggled at right tackle last year, he is clearly one of the best guards in the game.

Bears coach John Fox is comfortable enough with his Pro Bowl guard that he sees the silver lining in his time off the field.

“It’s huge,” Fox said about the extra reps for other players in Long’s absence. “We use, and you get sick of

Buescher emerges in the fog at Pocono for 1st career Cup win

The Associated Press LONG POND, Pa. – Chris Buescher sat in his Ford, hoping that the fog would stick over Pocono and the cloud over the rookie’s middling season would start to lift.

Buescher idled in his car, then stood with his arms folded on pit road.

“I tried not to get my hopes up,” he said.

Buescher emerged from the fog to become a surprising winner in Monday’s shortened Sprint Cup race at Pocono Raceway. He is now on the verge of being in the mix for NASCAR’s championship after not finishing better than 14th all season before Monday.

Imagine a title push that kicks off with Kyle Busch, Jimmie Johnson and little-known Buescher in the field.

“The plan was to always make the Chase,” Buescher said. “We’re that much closer now.”

He’s not there yet. Buescher is six points behind David Ragan for 30th to reach the cutoff needed to become eligible for the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

Buescher, who drives for underfunded Front Row Motorsports, was the beneficiary on a rare Monday race

postponed a day by rain. With nasty weather punishing the track, NASCAR called the red flag with 22 laps left and parked the cars on pit road. Buescher was as much a spectator in the No. 34 Ford as the few fans left in the stands, though NASCAR let drivers get out of their cars after about 10 minutes as they waited out gloomy conditions.

“I’m a little scared to get out,” Buescher said.

“This is going to change our whole year right here,” Buescher said.

Drivers with a Chase spot secured enjoyed Buescher’s feel-good victory that broke up the recent Toyota hot streak.

“I told him, ‘If I couldn’t win, it was cool to see him win,’” Keselowski said.

NASCAR defended dragging out the decision to call the race, even as severe storms hit a track where a fan was killed by a lightning strike in 2012.

“We never lost the track,” said Steve O’Donnell, NASCAR’s chief racing development officer. “I think most NASCAR fans want to see a complete race.”

Deal ’em up! 18 trades – Beltran, Lucroy, Bruce, Moore move before deadline

The Associated Press Jonathan Lucroy got a deal he liked, Carlos Beltran joined him in Texas, and Jay Bruce and Rich Hill also moved Monday during an 18swap frenzy at the trade deadline.

Matt Moore, Francisco Liriano and Joe Smith found new homes, too, as playoff contenders stocked up for the stretch.

“That’s what we play for. Those are the moments we want to be in,” Moore said after NL West-leading San Francisco got the lefty from lastplace Tampa Bay. “For someone to reach out and come get me, it’s a really good feeling.”

Teams had until 3 p.m. to make trades without waivers. From now, no player can be dealt unless he goes unclaimed by everyone else.

The AL West-leading Rangers made two major moves.

After Lucroy used his limited notrade clause to block a deal to Cleveland, the All-Star catcher was sent to Texas.

“Now, moving on to the @Rangers let’s take this bad boy to the ’ship!

Really excited and can’t wait to get after it!” He posted on Twitter.

The 30-year-old Lucroy is batting .299 with 13 homers and 50 RBIs this season.

Texas also got Beltran, a proven postseason star, from the New York Yankees for righty Dillon Tate, the fourth overall pick in the 2015 amateur draft, and two other pitching prospects.

“I think as a player, you know that this moment could happen. But when it happens, it hits you,” Beltran said.

Twice before in his career, Beltran was traded in midseason to a team with playoff hopes. Like the Rangers, Beltran has been to the World Series but never won the crown.

The Yankees kept reworking their roster, trying to turn the best parts of a .500 team into a bright future.

They had already traded relief aces Aroldis Chapman and Andrew Miller leading up to the deadline.

“We’re kind of in unfamiliar territory with the Yankees,” first base-

man Mark Teixeira said.

“That’s life. I mean, we’ve had a nice run the last eight years,” he said.

As always, relievers were in demand.

The Giants aimed to bolster a shaky bullpen by getting Will Smith from Milwaukee, Boston got Fernando Abad from Minnesota and the NL Central-leading Cubs obtained sidearming righty Joe Smith from the Angels.

The Cubs previously got lefties Chapman and Mike Montgomery for their bullpen.

“That was an area we thought we could make some changes,” general manager Jed Hoyer said. “Adding a closer, a left-hander and then adding a guy like Smith who can be a right-handed specialist, we felt like those were areas that would improve our team and improve the mix of our bullpen.”

Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw is on the disabled list with back trouble, and they don’t know when he’ll be back. The 36-year-old Hill is 9-3 with a 2.25 ERA in 14 starts and on the DL because of a blister on the middle finger of his throwing hand that hasn’t healed.

Toronto was busy, making three deals. A day after falling out of the AL East lead, they got Liriano from Pittsburgh.

“Where he’s been and what he’s accomplished his entire career, we feel like gives us a chance to have someone who could be pitching in Game 2, 3 or 4 of a World Series run,” Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins said.

CHICAGO – Kyle Hendricks pitched a seven-hitter for his second career shutout, providing the Cubs’ bullpen a needed breather in a 5-0 victory over the Miami Marlins on Monday night.

After a wild, 12-inning win a night earlier in which manager Joe Maddon used 22 players, Hendricks (10-7) threw 123 pitches and lowered his ERA to 2.22, third-best in the majors. He allowed three walks and struck out five.

Anthony Rizzo finished a home run shy of the cycle and reached base five times, and Addison Russell had a two-run single in the first off wild Marlins starter Adam Conley (7-6). The lefty walked six, one intentionally, and hit a batter while needing 97 pitches to get through four innings.

The Cubs stranded nine runners in that span until Hendricks drove in Willson Contreras with a grounder through a drawn-in infield off Dustin McGowan in the fifth.

JOLIET – In May, Leslie Livett was honored with a lifetime achievement award for her contributions to pediatric care.

But her commitment to ensuring that children are safe continues all year long.

“At this point in my career, I teach people how to do critical thinking and how to do things right for the community we serve,” Livett said.

Livett, the EMS/trauma nurse coordinator at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, joined the hospital’s staff in 2001. Livett said she loves the unpredictability of working in emergency services, but grew passionate about kids’ issues when St. Joe’s opened its pediatric emergency department in 2010.

“Our children are so important to us,” said Livett of Mokena, “and sometimes they don’t get the attention they need.”

According to a news release from Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center, Livett helps coordinate pediatric trauma and emergency preparedness education events throughout Will County.

These include, Livett said, the annual Region VII Pediatric Priorities Conference for health professionals and the EMS Safety Fair. The latter, which is not a regional event but one specific to St. Joe’s, invites 700 first-graders from the Joliet area on a “first-come, first-served” basis to the hospital to learn about emergency safety and awareness.

Also with Region VII – which includes a number of hospitals, including Morris Hospital and Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox – Livett helps coordinate the “In the Midst of Chaos” conference.

This conference, also for health professionals, Livett said, covers natural disasters and trauma. The conference always includes a pediatric component so doctors, nurses and emergency services providers “can learn how to take better care of children.”

The children’s safety fair is held over two days on the third week of May – EMS Week, Livett said. The kids move through five stations. At the teddy bear clinic, kids see what happens in an ambulance and a hos-

Then, at the helmet clinic, kids learn the correct way to put on a bike helmet and watch a “cute video.” The Joliet Fire Department brings a simulated trailer with “fake smoke,” so kids can practice “stop, drop and roll.”

“Usually a private ambulance comes and takes the kids through all the equipment so they won’t get afraid,” Livett said.

One of the hardest experiences for the nursing and EMS staff is the death of a child, Livett said. In addition to a debriefing team, Livett brings in comfort dogs for the staff.

“The physicians enjoy them, too,” Livett said of the dogs. “I feel like people get a lot out of it. They’re able to talk about what’s bothering them.”

Livett attributes her interest in child safety to a great mentor – her mother, Josephine Livett, a pediatric nurse at what is now Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago.

Josephine died when Leslie was 13, but her empathetic spirit inspired Leslie to be aware of the specific needs of children and then deliver the same quality of care.

“She was very compassionate, the most understanding woman I’ve ever known,” Leslie said. “She was kind and had a heart as big as the world.”

In a surprise ceremony May 19 at St. Joe’s, the Illinois Department of Public Health and the Illinois Emergency Medical Services for Children program presented Leslie with the Ron W. Lee, M.D. – Excellence in Pediatric Care Award.

Leslie said she had once worked with Lee early in her career, which made the honor extra special. She’s still awed at receiving the award.

“It’s probably one of the most incredible things that happened in my life. It’s so humbling; it’s such an honor,” Leslie said. “It’s amazing that they thought I was worthy of it.”

Lee, M.D. – Excellence in Pediatric Care Awards are given each May to recognize those dedicated to pediatric emergency care and childhood injury prevention initiatives. People or organizations can be nominated in one of three award categories: lifetime achievement, clinical excellence and community service.

Lee was the medical director for the division of emergency medical services and highway safety at IDPH, as well as the director of emergency medicine at Loyola University Medical Center. He was also instrumental in establishing and fostering the EMSC program in Illinois. Lee died in 1998.

The Illinois EMSC program is a collaborative effort between IDPH and Loyola University Chicago. It was established in 1994 to ensure the emergency medical care needs of children are adequately addressed.

JOLIET – Angela Moffett and Annmarie Reynolds, both breast cancer survivors from Joliet, joined more than 140 five-year cancer survivors on June 10 for the 28th Celebrate Life, an annual day of empowerment and celebration conceived by Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) at Midwestern Regional Medical Center (Midwestern).

Moffett, Reynolds and the other celebrants, representing 32 states, including Hawaii, were transported to the event on large coach buses and escorted, with lights flashing, by members of the Zion Fire Rescue Department.

Upon arrival, the celebrants stepped onto a red carpet, lined on both sides with hundreds of supporters composed of family, friends, doctors, nurses and members of the community.

After opening remarks, the survivors participated in a commemorative treeplanting ceremony. Each survivor was also honored with an engraved gold leaf, which is proudly displayed on one of four blossoming “Trees of Life” located within the hospital.

Celebrants and their families shared stories of survivorship with one another and visited cancer patients within the hospital. Celebrants and their guests also enjoyed a gourmet lunch prepared by the culinary team at CTCA. For information, www.cancercenter. com/midwestern.

ROMEOVILLE – Senior Star at Weber Place invites the public to a dynamic presentation on its senior living campus by renowned motivational author and speaker, LeAnn Thieman, at 5:30 p.m.

Silver Cross Hospital to offer Prepared Childbirth classes

NEW LENOX – Silver Cross Hospital is offering a one-day prepared childbirth class.

The class will be 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Aug. 27 at Silver Cross Hospital, Pavilion A, Conference Center, 1890 Silver Cross Blvd., New Lenox.

Participants will receive instruction from a registered nurse on breathing, relaxation and floor exercise techniques.

She also will review the labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum processes. A tour of the birthing unit is included.

Cost is $80 a couple. There is no charge for patients under the care of an OB/GYN with the Aunt Martha’s Joliet Community Health Center or the Will County Community Health Center.

Music helps Sunny Hill residents in Joliet remember, elevates moods JOLIET – Music can pick you up, bring back memories and get your feet tapping or get you dancing in your seat. In some cases, it can help you forget pain.

At Sunny Hill Nursing Home of Will County, residents are using personal music players, as they refer to their iPods, for all of those reasons as part of the county-owned facility’s Music and Memory Project.

Local participation in the national movement was kick-started in large part by a more than $5,000 donation from KSKJ, the American Slovenian Catholic Union, Lodge No. 2, which held a fund-raiser in May 2015 to benefit the program.

ADHD medication shown to be safe Dear Dr. K: My daughter has ADHD. I have heard conflicting reports about ADHD medication for kids. Is it safe and does it work?

Dear Reader: ADHD stands for “attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.” Children with ADHD have trouble paying attention and are impulsive and hyperactive. These symptoms can get in their way and make it harder for them to function at school and at home. ADHD also interferes with a child’s ability to form and keep friendships.

Methylphenidate is the most commonly prescribed drug for ADHD. It’s known by many brand names, including Ritalin, Concerta and Quillivant. It has been used for more than 50 years to treat ADHD, and studies have found it to be effective in decreasing symptoms.

Despite its long history, the first comprehensive, systematic review of the benefits and risks of this drug was not published until 2015.

The researchers reviewed hundreds of studies that examined the effects of methylphenidate for ADHD. They found the drug did improve children’s performance in the classroom. And parents reported a better quality of life for the family when their children were taking medication. On the other hand, there was some evidence it increased the risk of sleep problems and decreased appetite.

So what does this mean for parents trying to decide whether their child should take ADHD medication?

First, parents can take comfort in the fact these medications often work. They reduce problems with attention, impulsivity and hyperactivity. This often improves a family’s quality of life at home and leads to better overall behavior at school.

Parents also can rest assured methylphenidate is unlikely to cause serious, long-term problems. About one in four children who take the drug may have minor and short-

And knowing these issues might be a problem can help parents anticipate possible solutions. For example, if appetite becomes a problem, you can give your child a big breakfast before taking the medication.

Or work with your child’s doctor to lower his or her dose if sleep is an issue.

In addition, parents should be aware medication isn’t the only treatment option.

For example, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) also can help children with ADHD. Relaxation training and social skills training are other treatment options.

Because I’m not a pediatrician, I haven’t seen kids with ADHD in my practice. But I sure have seen their parents. And one common misconception parents have about ADHD – and about other “psychological” problems – is they represent a character disorder. They think the kids have a weakness, one they should be able to overcome with willpower and discipline.

In my opinion, that’s the wrong way to think about it. I believe ADHD is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. While CBT, relaxation training and social skills training help kids function, they probably don’t change brain chemistry.

The bottom line? Find a doctor who understands and commonly treats ADHD. When medication is prescribed correctly by a knowledgeable physician, the positives outweigh the negatives.

In bridge, when is a trick not a trick?

Well, I suppose a trick is always a trick, but sometimes the time when a trick is taken can be critical -- as in this deal. South is in four spades.

After West leads the heart ace, what should happen?

West’s two-heart overcall was thin, but potentially told partner what to lead and possibly made life difficult for the responder if he lacked spade support. North made a modern cue-bid raise to show at least game-invitational values with three or more spades. (If you do not use this gadget, North would respond three spades.)

At trick one, East plays the heart two under his partner’s ace. If this is a singleton, West should continue the suit, but that is improbable. It cannot be from a doubleton, because East would have started a high-low. Most likely is that East started with a tripleton. So many a West would hasten to cash the heart king, but that would let the contract make. South would discard his club jack on dummy’s heart queen.

Can West’s second heart trick disappear?

No, it cannot. So West should shift to a top-of-nothing club nine. (If East has the diamond ace, that trick won’t run away, either.) South takes East’s queen with his ace, cashes the spade ace (West needs the king for his overcall), then leads his other heart, but West takes that trick and plays a second club, or first cashes the heart king before leading the club.
