Civilian Conservation Corps – Lockport On Aug. 24, 1984, President Ronald Reagan signed a bill authorizing the creation of the I&M Canal National Heritage Corridor. This new legislation established a nearly 100-mile-long cultural park between Chicago and LaSalle/Peru that became the nation’s first National Heritage Corridor.

The notion of linking public and private space along the canal into a new open space planning and awareness concept was a new and radical way to embrace the history of the canal corridor. The new open space planning idea helps to bring together preservation, conservation, recreation and economic development of the region.

While the legislation became law in 1984, the origins of the bridging was a successful mixture of preservation, public use and industrial activity that can be traced back to the CCC restoration efforts of the 1930s.

Annual Reports from the Director of the Civilian Conservation Corps provide some indication of enrollment totals for the state of Illinois, but often monthly enrollment totals reflected in these reports do not provide an actual month-to-month total for each camp.

Historical records also do not provide a clear picture of the total number of camps that operated in the state, and certain sources provide an average number. The 1939 Annual Report lists 49 camps in operation in Illinois, including several larger camp areas, which had between 180 to 200 enrollees each.

The type of general tasks varied with the type of park (i.e. soil conservation service, state park, county forest preserve, drainage camp or Army base). The six camps along the I&M Canal were devoted to construction – foot and vehicle bridges, horse bridges, shelters, buildings, benches, tables, along with water-control and landscaping.

Although the CCC was considered to be one of the most popular New Deal programs, it never was intended to become a permanent agency. After December 1941, all federal programs were revised and aug-

In the end, the CCC improved the nation’s natural resources and had a profound and lasting effect on the young men enrolled in its programs. CCC constructions can still be seen in several state parks, including Starved Rock, Gebhard Woods, Illini and Channahon.

Participants navigate 11 obstacle courses with Insane Inflatable 5K

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Bob Smith has run 5K races before, but nothing like the Insane Inflatable 5K at Chicagoland Speedway.

The grounds outside the Joliet speedway stadium were turned into an inflatable obstacle course that waves of people had to slide, dodge, climb and run around to get through.

Hundreds of people came out Saturday to enjoy the course.

Music was booming at the start and finish lines, and as a new wave of runners approached the start line – consisting of a wall they had to climb – they clapped hands with enthusiasm.

“I never did anything like this, so I thought it would be a nice challenge,” Smith said.

Smith, who ran with members of his church, Revolution Church in New Lenox, said the course was challenging, especially when he had to climb on several obstacles several times.

It was definitely a fun experience, he said.

“It was nice to see young kids and older folks and everybody just kind of having a good time,” Smith said.

Nick Germano, Townsquare Active senior event director, said the Insane Inflatable 5K race is the largest growing 5K race nationwide since it started in 2014. The race is one many events Townsquare produces in the U.S. There were 18 races in 2014, 76 last year and 120 this year, he said. The race will also run this year in Canada in provinces such as British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario and Saskatchewan.

“It’s pretty exciting,” he said.

The course Saturday included 11 inflatable obstacles, each custom made, Germano said.

“We’re the industry leader in the inflatable department. We were the first ones to kind of come up with this concept. … No one else has inflatables like ours,” Germano said.

When participants come to the last obstacle, they have to dodge giant inflatable wrecking balls, go past small “tipsy towers” and climb up a wall with rope and end their journey with a slide.

Trevor Tabisz of Lockport was out at the course Saturday to participate.

“It’s definitely more of a friendly competition,” he said about the race.

“So, I guess your obstacle is mostly just other people.”

He said it wasn’t difficult and the

race had a friendly atmosphere, with people helping each other out.

Besides the obstacle course, several booths were set up at the race, including one for the American Cancer Society.

The health organization is a na-

tional charity partner of Insane Inflatable 5K for this year, and the two work with each other in every city the race visits, Germano said.

“A portion of our proceeds goes to benefit their local charity in the city that we’re in,” he said.

Upcoming races in Illinois will be Aug. 6 in Springfield, Aug. 27 in Rockford and Sept. 24 in Bloomington.

Maria Bylina of Oak Forest said she came because she wanted to participate and looked forward most to the slides.

“It’s fun,” she said.

Rialto payroll for August assessed

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Rialto Square Theatre has been meeting payroll, but August could be a challenge, the theater’s finance manager said last week.

Dale Evans assessed the payroll situation when asked by a Rialto board member at the body’s monthly meeting.

“We’ve met payroll through this particular month,” Evans said. “It’s not looking very good for three pay periods in August. We currently have $30,000. Things are slim.”

Board member Mary Beth Gannon asked about the payroll, although Evans’ response was not followed up by any discussion about the Rialto’s financial situation.

The theater’s regular payroll is about $80,000 a month, Evans said.

The payroll fluctuates when stagehands and other crews have to be hired for shows, which also generate revenue to pay for additional staffing costs. Pay and benefits totaled nearly $196,000 in April.

But the Rialto has virtually stopped booking shows during a management restructuring that is entering its fifth month, after former General Manager Randy Green was put on leave.

A $30,000 cash balance is a sharp plunge from the nearly $159,000 cash balance at the end of June listed in the Rialto’s latest cash flow statement.

Board Chairman Dan Vera said after the Wednesday meeting that the $30,000 figure does not reflect rental income still coming in.

Theater receipts in June totaled nearly $145,000. Rent from office space was nearly $57,000.

But the Rialto continues to struggle to pay bills.

Evans also told the board that MidAmerican Energy Co., the Rialto’s electric supplier, was dropping them because of unpaid bills. He said the Rialto would by default become a customer of ComEd.

Total bills to be paid in June were nearly $524,000, according to the cash flow statement. That included $356,000 in bills that were four months old or older.

The amount of bills at least four months old has been growing since March when it was $248,000.

The Rialto board parted ways with Green amid a controversy over unpaid payroll taxes that have since been paid.

The board had been seeking a re-

placement for Green, but decided in June to turn instead to an outside management firm to run the theater and its office space. Five companies have submitted proposals that the board has begun to review.

Vera said last week that he expected the Rialto might choose a management company in about six weeks.

The board also is seeking bids on the Two Rialto Square office property that it plans to sell.

Transportation, capital projects among scheduled county committee talks

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Will County Board and Forest Preserve District of Will County board will hold a total of nine committee meetings this week for discussion of a vast range of topics.

At 9 a.m. Tuesday, the County Board’s Public Works and Transportation Committee will hear County Highway Engineer Bruce Gould’s presentation of the county’s five-year transportation improvement program.

According to the agenda packet,

program highlights include the Interstate 55 and Weber Road interchange project, expected to begin in 2017. The program also includes 2 miles of improvements to Weber Road, a county highway.

Other projects highlighted in the packet include reconstruction of 3 miles of Laraway Road between Route 52 and Cedar Road, and more than 4 miles of Laraway Road between Cedar Road and Route 45, as well as improvements to the intersection of Laraway and Cedar roads near the Manhattan-New Lenox border.

At 10 a.m. the same day, the Coun-

ty Board’s Finance Committee is set to discuss a funding request by the Rialto Square Theatre, which a finance official for the theater has said may not be able to meet payroll in August.

The venue’s board is set to decide in the coming weeks between proposals from five different companies interested in becoming a third-party manager.

The theater board Wednesday also voted to seek bids as it tries to sell its Two Rialto Square office buildings.

At 11 a.m., the County Board’s Capital Improvements Committee will hear updates from design and management firms regarding two large ongoing proj-

ects – the new Will County Justice Center and the new Will County Sheriff’s Facility.

The committee is expected to discuss the guaranteed maximum price for the sheriff’s facility and bids for the first phase of work, as well as the management labor agreement for the projects.

Tuesday’s is the first of two Capital Improvements Committee meetings in August. The committee has increased to twice-monthly meetings to better oversee the fast-paced projects.

Evan Matravers of Minooka got to throw the first pitch at the Chicago White Sox game on July 24.

The 14-year-old is considered a hero in the eyes of his parents, Debbie and Randy Matravers. He even impressed the neuroscience department at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center, which is how he ended up on the field that weekend.

Last August, Debbie was driving on Route 59 in Shorewood with Evan. Debbie pulled off the road and into a fast food restaurant. From there everything went haywire.

Evan noticed his mom was acting strangely. Her right hand was off the steering wheel and she seemed confused. She bumped a car trying to pull into a parking space. Then her left foot hit the gas pedal.

Evan was yelling to her, but she didn’t hear his frantic voice. He reached over, grabbed the key in the ignition and shut the car off. He called his dad, who told Evan to call 911.

Then Evan looked at his mom and noticed the right side of her face was drooping and drool was running down her cheek.

“I realized it was a stroke,” Evan said.

Evan knew the signs of a stroke from earning a Boy Scout merit

In turn the hospital put the neuroscience team on alert.

In the ambulance, Debbie was non-responsive. If Evan had not been with her she would not have been able to tell them what happened.

“Evan recognizing my symptoms is what saved my life,” she said.

Evan stayed behind to wait for his dad and talk with police officers.

Debbie was later told that he took total control of the situation, and was calm and collected.

The Sox and the organization Strike Out Stroke teamed up to bring awareness of the warning signs of stroke – facial drooping, arm weakness, speech difficulties and time, which is of the essence – F.A.S.T. Stroke victims and their families were treated to a suite during the game against the Detroit Tigers and everyone got to go onto the field to watch Evan throw out the pitch.

Debbie wants people to know that a stroke can happen to anyone of any age, even if they don’t have major risk factors; she had none and she was just 45. Doctors say they will never know why she got the blood clot that led to a stroke.

Debbie attends Afterglow stroke support group at Presence Saint Joseph the third Wednesday of each month. There are people in the group in their 20s up to their 60s.

Evan agrees that everyone should know the signs, because it could happen to anybody.

her brother, Ben Johnson, how to perform simple home and auto repairs. Ali said she and her father had their inside jokes and silly sayings, and he had his own way of addressing her early-morning grumpiness.

“He’d say, ‘Good morning, Ali. Did you take an extra pretty pill today?’ ” Ali said.

Ali said Bill wrote little notes for his family to find and had profound joy in a simple car ride.

“If we were walking out of the grocery store and he’d see a penny on the ground, he’d pick it up and say, ‘Well,

it looks like it’s my lucky day,’ and put the penny in his pocket,” Ali said.

In May, Ali took a fishing trip to Red Lake with Bill and his three dogs: Boomer and Lily (black Labradors) and Nellie (a bichon). Ali said he owned two boats, two canoes and two kayaks, and had his own campsite in a private Coal City club.

Wherever Bill is now, Ali is certain it’s autumn.

“I keep saying he’s just gone fishing,” Ali said. “I think he’s someplace sitting in a canoe, fishing and talking with his dad who passed away. I feel he is looking down on all of us and enjoying life.”

NEW LENOX – Gone fishing.

That’s how Ali Johnson likes to recall her father, Bill Johnson, an avid outdoorsman who died July 1 as a result of multiple injuries suffered in a motorcycle crash, she said.

Bill, 57, had been riding home from Starcon International where he was an industrial maintenance manager.

Four hours later, Bill was gone. He was conscious nearly the entire time, Ali said, upbeat and making jokes.

But that was Bill.

His wife, Pam Johnson of New Lenox, said Bill was always smiling, always content and always full of gratitude, whether he was engaging kids (his own, their friends’ or the boys he mentored through Cub Scout Pack 94 in New Lenox), taking care of the garden or even cleaning up after his three dogs.

“He enjoyed every moment of every day,” Pam said.

Pam hopes whoever received Bill’s sky-blue eyes – the only organs able to be donated, she said – will see life through his perspective: no fear of the future and a strong belief in the inher-

ent goodness of people, the sanctity of nature and the power of humor.

“There was always laughter in our house,” Pam said.

Bill’s interests were many. He was a bird-watcher, nature photographer, guitarist and an amazing cook who turned the simplest of meals into gourmet feasts simply by the way he plated it.

He grilled outside year-round, made homemade dog food, snow-skied and water-skied, and was fifth in the state with a national cycling federation, Pam said. In fact, cycling brought Pam and Bill together. When they were first married 24 years ago, they took many trips through the Joliet Bicycle Club.

“I fell in love with his voice,” Pam said. “He had the most beautiful and patient and kind voice.”

Pam said Bill was meticulous and very detailed-oriented at his job. Off the job, Bill had time to pursue so many passions because he engaged the kids in all of them, Pam said. She and Bill always felt they and their two children were a strong team that transcended any challenge.

“That’s why this loss is tremendous for us,” Pam said.

POOLING TEARS When the small chamber (lacrimal sac) into which the tears drain from the eye become infected, tears become trapped and form a pool. This condition (known as “dacryocystitis”) blocks tears from flowing from the inner corners of the eyes, along the nose, and out through the nasal passages. As bacteria grow in the pool of blocked tears, infection sets in and reddening, tenderness, and swelling develop at the inside corner of the eye. This most commonly occurs in infants and older adults. Treatment may begin with warm compresses and gentle massage, followed by probing of the nasolacrimal duct (tear duct) and a course of oral antibiotics. If the probing proves ineffective, “dacryocystorhinostomy” (DCR) surgery may be recommended.

Co-founder of Autism Speaks, Weather Channel meteorologist Dave Schwartz dies from cancer Suzanne Wright, dies at 69 The ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK – A co-founder of the advocacy group Autism Speaks has died after helping build it into one of the leading voices for people with the developmental disorder. Suzanne Wright was 69. Organization spokeswoman Aurelia Grayson said Wright died of pancreatic cancer Friday at her home in Fairfield, Connecticut.

She and her husband, former NBC Universal CEO Bob Wright, founded

Autism Speaks in 2005 after their grandson’s diagnosis. The New York-based organization funds research, raises awareness and spotlights the needs of people with autism and their families.

As part of her role, she appeared at events at the United Nations annually for eight years on World Autism Awareness Day, which is April 2.

She also helped spearhead Autism Speaks’ decadelong public service announcement campaign about early signs of the disorder.

ATLANTA – Longtime Weather Channel meteorologist Dave Schwartz has died after a long fight with cancer. He was 63.

In an announcement of his death, The Weather Channel said on its website that Schwartz died Saturday after being first diagnosed with stage 2 pancreatic cancer 10 years ago. It said he twice beat cancer, but it resurfaced last year.

Schwartz had been an on-air me-

teorologist for the network for more than 20 years. The Weather Channel said Schwartz was known for his friendly on-air demeanor and often referred to viewers as “my friend” before giving forecasts.

It said his laidback style and sense of humor quickly made him popular with viewers.

The Weather Channel said his colleagues remembered Schwartz as “an incredible man who made them better people and better broadcasters.”

The Associated Press CHICAGO – After a year of squabbles over the state budget, the outcome of Illinois’ power struggle now hinges on dozens of House election campaigns that will determine whether Democrats can impose their will on Gov. Bruce Rauner or the Republican gains traction with his ideas to “shake up” the state.

Each side has millions of dollars to devote to the battles, which could define the remaining two years of Rauner’s first term.

Rauner blames House Speaker Michael Madigan and the Democrats for the state’s long-running financial predicament, and Republicans are asking voters to punish them for it in the November election. But the Democrats warn that Rauner’s agenda would be destructive to the middle class, and are banking on voters ultimately strengthening their hand in the Legislature, which they control.

AURORA – Fire officials said a neighbor helped a disabled resident and another person escape from an Aurora home that caught fire after apparently being struck by lightning.

No opening delay seen from halt of dunes pavilion work

CHESTERTON, Ind. – Work to refurbish and privatize a pavilion at Indiana Dunes State Park to bring restaurants, a rooftop bar and a banquet center along Lake Michigan is temporarily on hold until the state Department of Natural Resources gets permission from the National Park Service to move ahead.

NPS and DNR officials said the main obstacle is a technical matter of determining whether the pavilion and adjacent banquet center will be designated

as a public facility or whether the state will need to find replacement land of the same or higher value to replace it. The replacement land does not have to be at the same location.

Opponents contend the move

Trump backers claim shift in his immigration rhetoric

CLEVELAND – As he turns his attention to the general election, Donald Trump is signaling that he is ready to tone down his fiery rhetoric on illegal immigration – at least behind closed doors.

At the same time, Republican officials appear eager to push him in a more moderate direction, telling Hispanics that he has abandoned his divisive primary pledge to deport the estimated 11 million people living in the country illegally – even if Trump hasn’t said so publicly himself.

“Trump has already said that he will not do massive deportations,” Helen Aguirre Ferre, the Republican National Committee’s director of Hispanic communications, told reporters at a Spanish-language briefing at the party’s convention two weeks ago. Instead, she said, “He will focus on removing the violent undocumented who have criminal records and live in the country.”

It’s a statement that may come as a surprise to Trump’s legion of loyal followers, many of whom were first drawn to Trump because of his hard-line views on immigration and border security. Trump has vowed to build a wall along the length of the southern border and use a “deportation force” to track down and deport anyone in the country illegally.

“You’re going to have a deportation force, and you’re going to do it humanely,” Trump said in a TV interview last fall. He estimated in a separate interview that the process would take between 18 months to two years.

But those who would like to see Trump move in a more inclusive direction said Trump has indicated that he no longer advocates that plan. As evidence, they point to several vague sentences from an interview Trump gave earlier this summer to Bloomberg News during a whirlwind trip to Scotland to visit his golf courses.

“President Obama has mass deported vast numbers of people – the most ever, and it’s never reported. I think people are going to find that I have not only the best policies, but I will have the biggest heart of anybody,” Trump told the outlet. Pressed on whether he would issue “mass deportations,” Trump responded: “No, I would not call it mass deportations.”

“We are going to get rid of a lot of bad dudes who are here,” he was quoted as saying.

It remains unclear whether Trump was taking rhetorical or ideological issue with the phrase, and Trump has not made similar comments at any point since. Asked how he would manage the deportations at a press conference in Florida Wednesday, Trump said only, “We’re going to have a whole policy on that over the next three weeks.”

This kind of ambiguity is not unusual for Trump, whose vague statements often leave room for numerous, sometimes conflicting interpretations.

But for some who are supporting Trump and want to see him moderate, the meaning is clear.

“Two or three weeks ago, [Trump] conceded in an interview in Bloomberg in which he said the term ‘massive deportation’ is not used by him, and it was planted by a journalist,” said the head of Latino Partnership for Conservative Principles, Alfonso Aguilar, who recently signed a letter along with several other Latino conservatives endorsing Trump.

Aguilar said that he had seen in Trump’s comments “something very interesting, which can be the beginning of an openness toward the center on immigration. He said he wants to remove only people with criminal record, not people without criminal record. It could be the openness toward a legalization.”

A similar interpretation has also developed among Hispanic and religious leaders who have met with Trump privately in recent months.

cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – When teams play three games, and one is decided in the bottom of the ninth and two others feature the losing team getting the potential-tying runner to third base in the final inning, it’s safe to say that things could have gone either way.

But the Joliet Slammers prevailed, 6-5, Sunday for their third consecutive one-run Frontier League victory

over River City at Silver Cross Field to complete a second-straight 3-0 sweep and also extend their current winning streak to seven games.

Joliet entered the current homestand with two 3-0 series efforts this season, with the last one happening June 17-19 against Schaumburg. But following three straight victories over both Evansville and River City, manager Jeff Isom’s squad doubled its total of sweeps.

Phil Bates drove in three runs in the

leadoff spot to lead the attack, while Chris Rice allowed one earned run on seven hits in six innings to pick up the victory for the Slammers.

With center fielder and leadoff hitter Charlie White getting his first game off this season, usual nine-hitter and left fielder Bates took his place and helped the Slammers (37-28) take a 6-2 advantage into the ninth inning.

However, the Rascals (30-35) used three walks and a hit to score one more run than they had collected through

the first eight innings. Mitchell Osnowitz stepped in for Kaleb Ort, coaxing a sacrifice fly and getting a strikeout to record the save.

“Two straight sweeps and seven in a row – we’ll take that,” Isom said. “They haven’t been easy, by any means, and it’s a good thing that we’re scoring runs. The bottom line is that if we go out and throw strikes, we’re fine. But we have a little hiccup where we walk

Melvin Rodriguez singled and moved to third after a single and a subsequent error on a ball hit by Sikes Orvis (2 for 3). Casey Fletcher, who has taken over daily catching duties while Joe Staley is on the injured list, followed with an RBI single.

After Zarley Zalewski advanced the runners on an infield out, Bates (2 for 5) slapped a two-run double to right to give Joliet an early 3-0 lead.

“It was exciting,” Bates said of being the leadoff man. “But that’s what I did in college, so it wasn’t anything really new to me. I took the same approach that I usually do. I’ve usually been batting in the nine-hole so it’s about the same role.

“We’ve got a lot of chemistry right now, and chemistry is the key word for our team. We’ve gone on a pretty good streak, and we just want to keep it going and keep doing the same thing. If everybody does their job, we usually come out on top.”

River City got a run back in the third when Johnny Morales got an RBI on a sacrifice fly, then pulled to within 3-2 in the sixth when Kyle Gaedele led off the inning with a home run.

“It feels great,” Rice said. “I’m happy that I can get out there and help the team win by throwing strikes. I got a

lot of ground balls, so I had some quick innings since our infield is great. I always want a few more strikeouts; but as long as I’m keeping my pitch count down and getting ground balls, everything’s fine. Whatever the team needs me to do, I’ll be there.

“We’re battling and playing good

baseball. Everyone is hitting, and our pitching is coming around, so it’s fun baseball. The clubhouse is great, and it’s a great group of guys. We have really good team chemistry, everyone gets along, and we’re all good friends. I love it here.”

After Robert Robbins pitched a 1-23 seventh, Joliet took a 4-2 lead in the bottom of that inning when Bates hit a solo shot to left for his fourth homer.

Brent Choban worked his way out of a jam in the eighth; then, in the bottom half of that inning, the Slammers got two insurance runs. Rodriguez reached on a two-out error before Orvis and Fletcher walked to load the bases and Zalewski walked to bring in a run. Orvis came in on a wild pitch to give Joliet a four-run lead going into the ninth.

Jake Gronsky also went 2 for 4 for the Slammers, who host Normal in a three-game series that begins Tuesday to close out the current homestand.

BAY CITY, Mich. – With six 13-yearolds on the roster, the Crest Hill Pony All-Stars accomplished plenty this summer.

Unfortunately, a trip to the Pony World Series at Washington, Pennsylvania, will not be added to the résumé.

Crest Hill ran into a buzz saw otherwise known as Bay County White and dropped a 17-0 decision Sunday in the semifinals of the North Zone tournament. Bay County Blue – which won the pool in which Crest Hill finished second – won the other semifinal, so the two local teams squared off later Sunday for the title and the trip to Pennsylvania.

Crest Hill manager Joe Marshall used three pitchers – starter Josh Cunniff, Roman Esquivel and Devin Cronin – in a first inning where Bay County White scored 13 runs. Cronin then worked through the third inning, allowing four runs, and Dustin Lelak pitched a three-up, three-down fourth.

The game ended after 4½ innings on

Marshall gave his OK, and Cunniff was one of the All-Star team’s solid players as a 12-year-old.

Cutler now Bears’ unquestioned leader BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush BOURBONNAIS – So here we are on Day 3 in Bourbonnais with the Bears, two practices under our belts, the pads going on and the leashes coming off Saturday, and I’m trying to figure out exactly what alternate universe I’ve landed in?

How did I miss it when Jay Cutler became the accepted and unquestioned quarterback and leader of the Bears?

When Ryan Pace and John Fox arrived in Chicago 18 months ago, it appeared the new regime would release the veteran signal-caller and get out from underneath the remaining “guaranteed” dollars in what was believed to be the ludicrous contract given to him after the 2013 season by Phil Emery.

After three separate meetings with the media over the past 48 hours, Fox hasn’t been asked a single question about Cutler’s future, how he feels about him at quarterback, whether he can be trusted to protect the football or how he feels about going into the season with him.

Even more startling – I’ve hosted close to 100 hours of sports talk radio on 670 the SCORE since the end of the season and I can count on one hand the calls I’ve had to complain about, trade, release or excoriate Cutler.

Chicago loves Jay? No. But has “Bears Nation” suddenly accepted the former lightning rod of the

“I think new talent and new guys in the building, there’s new energy and new attitude. I’ve embraced it. I’ve enjoyed it.”

Jones-Quartey’s physical play big plus in safety competition

fishbain@profootballweekly.com BOURBONNAIS – In the Bears’ final practice without pads, there was a big hit. Well, as much of a collision as one will see without pads.

Safety Harold Jones-Quartey shot his gap and met running back Jeremy Langford in the backfield. The second-year safety out of Division III Findlay College was fired up after making the run stop, and it’s that physicality and active play that have given Jones-Quartey the first shot to win the starting safety job opposite Adrian Amos.

“That’s my personality,” Jones-Quartey said about the way he plays. “You guys know my background and that all comes with it, and I want this job more

than I want anything. So I’m going to go out there and be myself and try to help this team and make plays.”

Since the start of OTAs, Jones-Quartey has been running with the first team.

During the offseason, Jones-Quartey got his weight from 220 pounds to 205 so he “could cover better, and get in and out of my breaks and not just be able to cover tight ends. Hopefully, I can cover slots, and things like that, so I’m moving better out there.”

Jones-Quartey showed off a knack for playing the ball in the team’s Week 16 win over Tampa Bay, when he had two passes defensed, an interception and a forced fumble. He regained his starting job that game after playing only special teams from Weeks 11 through 15 – he did start in Weeks 5 and 6.

“The Tampa game was definitely huge,” he said. “I’ve been busting my butt the whole year, and I finally got an opportunity and made some plays in Tampa. That helped me a lot.”

There’s certainly still a competition at safety, with rookie Deon Bush and veteran Chris Prosinski trying to make positive impressions, but Jones-Quartey is in good position. He knows there’s more work to do, but he also wants to confirm the coaches’ belief in him.

“It shows that the coaches have a lot of faith in me, and a lot of trust, and they feel comfortable with me being out there with the 1s,” he said.

“I’ve just got to prove them right.

I’ve got to prove them right every day.

I have to bring that attitude and that work ethic every day and try to lead

and try to set a standard on how we’re going to practice, and hopefully everybody else can follow and we can all just be wild, crazy defense making plays.”

Injury report: Kyle Long (calf), Leonard Floyd (illness), Khari Lee (shoulder), Nick Becton (illness) and Roy Robertson-Harris (illness) did not practice.

“We just take it day-to-day,” John Fox said about Long. “You know it’s a calf strain. And it was mentioned that he’s in a boot – well that kind of helps facilitate the healing of a calf strain.”

Roster move: The Bears waived undrafted rookie punter Ben LeCompte and signed undrafted rookie offensive lineman Dan Buchholz, who was with the team in rookie minicamp.

LEXINGTON, Ohio – Battling a sore back and Team Penske teammate Will Power, pole-sitter Simon Pagenaud won the Indy Honda 200 on Sunday at the Mid-Ohio Sports Course for his fourth victory of the season and the eighth overall.

The Frenchman started from the pole, showing no signs of a back injury sustained in practice Friday. He beat Will Power by 4.16 seconds to boost his season points lead over his second-place Team Penske teammate to 58 points.

Pagenaud took the lead with six laps left when Conor Daly gave up a 10.5-second advantage to make a fuel stop. Even with a 4.8-second stop, Daly fell to eighth and ended up sixth.

Carlos Munoz was third, and 2015 race winner Graham Rahal, who grew

to rear back and let it go. Part of that is believing in that.”

Twins starter Ervin Santana (4-9) didn’t allow a hit until Adam Eaton’s leadoff bloop single in the fourth. Santana allowed three runs – one earned – in six innings with five strikeouts. Ryan Pressly gave up a double to Cabrera but recorded his first major-league save.

SPRINGFIELD, N.J. – The stars never aligned this magnificently for Jimmy Walker.

In the longest final day at the PGA Championship in 64 years, Walker produced three big birdies on the back nine at Baltusrol and held his nerve Sunday against the No. 1 player in the world to the very end. He closed with a 3-under 67 for a oneshot victory over defending champion Jason Day. Walker provided a little too much drama at the end.

He built a three-shot lead with an 8-foot birdie putt on the par-5 17th, only to watch Day blast a 2-iron onto the green at the par-5 18th to 15 feet for an eagle, setting off the loudest cheer of the week and closing the margin to one shot.

Needing only a par to win, Walker went for the green and left it in deep rough to the right and well below the green. He safely pitched to 35 feet, and the putt settled 3 feet beyond the hole. He never felt more nerves over such a short putt, but there was never a doubt.

It was a long road to his first major for the 37-year-old American, and it ended with a marathon.

Day, trying to join Tiger Woods as the only back-to-back winners of the PGA Championship in stroke play, came out to the 18th green with his son to watch the finish and quickly found Walker. “Great stuff, mate,” he said.

In a most peculiar final day at a major, the PGA Championship allowed for preferred lies – that never happens in a major – because of nearly 4 inches of rain during the week that drenched the Lower Course.

Desperate to beat the clock and avoid a second straight Monday finish at Baltusrol, the pairings stayed the same for the final round.

MINNEAPOLIS – In May, the White Sox were dreaming of a possible playoff race with three left-handers anchoring the starting rotation.

One day away from the major-league trade deadline, the Sox are now a seller, and uncertainty marks each of lefthanders Carlos Rodon, Chris Sale and Jose Quintana.

Brian Dozier hit two home runs to spoil Rodon’s first start since July 5, and the Minnesota Twins handed the Sox a 6-4 loss Sunday. Melky Cabrera had three hits for the Sox, who lost for the fourth time in five games.

“It’s not an excuse,” Rodon (2-8) said of his absence while recovering from a sprained left wrist. “I just got to be better. A team scores four runs, you got to keep these guys at less than four, man,

that’s my job. I didn’t do it today.”

The recent stretch only reinforced the Sox trade-deadline position. Before the game, the Sox traded left-handed reliever Zach Duke to the St. Louis Cardinals for speedy minor-league outfielder Charlie Tilson.

Sale and Quintana, meanwhile, have been mentioned in trade rumors leading into Monday’s deadline after the team started 23-10 this season and had Sale looking like a Cy Young Award candidate.

The White Sox are 6-11 since the AllStar break after previously trading for starter James Shields and signing Justin Morneau as a free agent.

Rain postpones Pocono’s Sprint Cup; to be track’s 2nd Monday race of 2016

LONG POND, Pa. – Pocono CEO Brandon Igdalsky took refuge from the rain inside a garage stall that was being used as the site of the drivers meeting.

His message Sunday morning to Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart and the rest of the field: “I love you guys.

But I don’t want to see you tomorrow.”

Well, tough luck.

Call it, Pocono Rainway.

Rain washed out the NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Pocono Raceway, and the 400-mile race was rescheduled for 11 a.m.

Monday. Martin Truex Jr. is on the pole as Kurt Busch tries to sweep Pocono in the track’s second Monday race of the season.

The June Pocono race also was delayed a day. NASCAR said this was the first time a track had two rain-postponed races in the same season.

This was NASCAR’s 10th postponed race since 2011. The 2012 rain-shortened race at Po-

cono was marred by lightning strikes that killed one fan and injured nine others.

Monday’s forecast seems cloudier than Kasey Kahne’s chances to make the Chase. But NASCAR set the time an hour earlier than the green flag start on that June Monday to try to beat some of the rain and reach at least the halfway point for an official race.

“I feel bad for the fans more than anybody,” Igdalsky said.

“We were going to have an unbelievable crowd here today.”

The track-drying Air Titans provided the only action at Pocono and, after morning rain had passed, there were clear skies at the scheduled 1:30 p.m. start. But about 90 minutes later, it started pouring at the track, and the race was quickly called off.

Kahne went on TV and bemoaned that he would have to delay a vacation to the Bahamas.

Pocono had more pressing problems.

Monitor blood pressure at home Dear Dr. K: I have hypertension and am on treatment. When my doctor checks the pressure, he says I’m doing “OK.” Should I be monitoring my blood pressure at home?

Dear Reader: You definitely should talk to your doctor about that. Home blood pressure monitors are easy and inexpensive, and provide you and your doctor with the information you need to protect your health.

About one in three adults in the United States has high blood pressure, or hypertension. And about half of those with high blood pressure don’t have it under control.

Hypertension increases the risk for heart disease and stroke. In my opinion, hypertension is one of the most important public health problems in the United States, as it affects so many people. Recognizing and treating it brings enormous health benefits.

You always have a blood pressure, every minute of the night and day, and it can change a lot from one moment to the next.

What matters most to your health is where your blood pressure is on average. Before we had home blood pressure monitoring machines, the way a doctor determined whether your blood pressure was controlled was to have you make a trip to his or her office.

If you think about it, that’s pretty silly.

The doctor is supposed to estimate what your average blood pressure is all day and all night based on one visit to the doctor’s office every several months. Furthermore, many people get nervous when they visit the doctor – yes, even my patients. So their blood pressure temporarily goes up, and is higher than it normally is. Home blood pressure machines make it easy to get a much better estimate of what your average blood pressure really is.

About half were given home blood pressure monitors that electronically sent their blood pressure readings to health professionals nearly every day. Based on these results, their medicines were adjusted and lifestyle changes were advised. The other half of the people in the study received usual care from their primary care providers.

At every step of the way, people in the home monitoring group had more success getting their blood pressure under control.

The benefits persisted six months after the program had ended.

You can buy a good home blood pressure monitor for less than $100. Look for: • an automatic monitor that doesn’t require a stethoscope (it’s easier to use); • a monitor that takes the blood pressure reading using a cuff that fits around the upper arm, not the wrist or finger; • a read-out large enough for you to see the numbers; • a seal of approval from a trusted organization.

Ask your doctor, nurse or pharmacist for help in calibrating your monitor and learning how to use it. Also ask how often you should check your blood pressure, and share the results of your readings with your doctor. Finally, remember home monitoring is not a substitute for regular physician checkups.

Some basics: When your child accidentally dumps all the sunscreen from your beach bag onto the car floor, you do not have to post a picture of a regretful, crying toddler to prove that “he really did it this time!” When your child falls off her bike and gets a great big scrape on her forearm, you do not have to post a picture of the scrape for the world to see. When your child is running through the backyard sprinkler without clothes on, you do not have to post a picture to let us know.

The defenders surely have to take two hearts and three clubs. But that will almost certainly require West to lead twice through dummy’s club king.

There isn’t a moment to lose. East must discourage with his heart three at trick one. Then, if West is watching and trusting, he will shift to a club. East will win that trick with his jack, play a low heart to his partner’s queen, and take two more club tricks when West leads that suit again.

PUBLIC NOTICE VILLAGE OF MINOOKA GRUNDY, KENDALL, WILL COUNTY, ILLINOIS NOTICE TO CONTRACTORS The Village of Minooka will receive sealed proposals at Village of Minooka, Clerk's Office, 121 McEvilly Road, Minooka, IL until 10:00 A.M. on August 19, 2016: REPAINTING OF 750,000 GALLON ELEVATED TANK Proposals will be publicly read aloud at 10:01 A.M. on August 19, 2016. No bid shall be withdrawn after the opening of the proposals without the consent of the President and Board of Trustees for a period of forty-five (45) days after the scheduled time of closing bids.

All proposals shall be sealed in an envelope, addressed to the Village of Minooka, attention Village Clerk. The name and address of the bidder and the name of the project shall also appear on the outside of the envelope. Proposals must be submitted on the forms provided by the Engineer.

The Bid Documents, including specifications, are on file at the office of the Engineer, Robinson Engineering, Ltd., 10045 West Lincoln Highway/U.S. Route 30 Frankfort, IL 60423 and may be obtained from the Engineer's office upon payment of Thirty Dollars ($30.00) for each paper copy and/or Ten Dollars ($10.00) per CD format. The bid documents will be issued until 4:30 PM on August 18, 2016. No refund will be made for documents received from the Engineer.

A certified check/bank draft drawn on a solvent bank, cashier's check or bid bond, payable without condition to the Village of Minooka in an amount not less than ten percent (10%) of the bid shall be submitted with each proposal, as a guarantee that, if the proposal is accepted, a contract will be entered into and the performance of the contract is properly secured.

A performance bond in a sum equal to one hundred percent (100%) of the amount of the bid, with sureties to be approved by the Village President and Board of Trustees for the faithful performance of the contract, must be furnished by the successful bidder. All bids or proposals shall contain an offer to furnish bond upon acceptance of such bid or proposal.

The right is reserved to reject any or all proposals, to waive technicalities, to postpone the bid opening, or to advertise for new proposals, if in the judgment of the Village President and Board of Trustees their best interests will be promoted thereby. The Contractor is advised that no work can begin on the project until the Village obtains all required permits.

The Contractor will be required to pay not less than the prevailing wage rates on this project as established by the Illinois Department of Labor.

He shall also comply with all applicable Federal, State and local regulations.

Bidder qualifications and experience will also be included in the basis for determining the lowest responsible bidder. Prequalification will be required to be submitted to the Engineer by all potential bidders. If in the opinion of the Engineer and the Village President and Board of Trustees, an applicant would not be able to serve the best interest of the Village of Minooka, a proposal will not be issued to the applicant.
