Police tensions become topic at Joliet City Council meeting

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet police are being advised to wait for backup support and are patrolling in twos in certain areas, Chief Brian Benton said.

Benton spoke to the City Council on Monday after being asked about what precautions are being taken in light of the Sunday attack on police in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Benton also spoke about the benefits of community policing in Joliet. But, he said, in light of current tensions, police are being advised to take extra caution.

“We did send out some recommendations that officers have backups before they get into their calls,” Benton said.

The chief also said the department is “staffing two-officer patrols throughout the week but not in every zone.”

Benton was back in Joliet from a trip to Washington, D.C., last week where he participated in a briefing with White House officials on the Obama administra-

The Joliet Police Department was thinned out during recession-time budget cuts, when early retirement offers were made to save money on payroll costs.

Also at the meeting was Garland Mays, president of the Forest Park Neighborhood Council, who said he would like to see the community policing program spread to more neighborhoods.

“In our community, we’re going to preach that the Joliet police are there to help. We need to help our officers as well,” Mays said.

Benton after the meeting said morale has suffered in the police department because of events elsewhere around the country. But he said Joliet police also have received many gestures of support from the community.

“Just about every day last week, we’ve had people come to the station with doughnuts or cupcakes saying, ‘We support you,’” Benton said. “We’ve been getting cards. It’s much appreciated.”

Minooka 201 bus drivers demand respect, safety, fairer pay

fsarver@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – Members of a bus drivers and aides union at Minooka District 201 urged more respect, safety and fairer pay from district officials at Monday’s board meeting.

The district and Teamsters Local 179, which also represents drivers and aides for Minooka High School District 111, have been in contract negotiations since last February and they are slated to meet for mediation in August.

The drivers and aides have voted to approve strike authorization amid the negotiations but have not planned to strike yet.

“We are driving the future and we need respect,” Judy Thayer, a District 201 bus driver and union member, said at the meeting. “We need things done by seniority, not favoritism and when we work, we need to be paid up to the last child is

tion’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing, which was organized last year after officer-involved shootings in Ferguson, Missouri, and elsewhere.

He said the community policing program in Joliet was recognized as an effective program.

Also at the Monday council meeting was Mike Clark, president of the Joliet chapter of the NAACP. Clark spoke with Benton after the meeting and later said he believed Joliet needs to continue to work on community policing to make sure the kind of police shootings and attacks on police that have occurred elsewhere in recent weeks do not happen here.

“None of it is acceptable, and anyone who believes that it is is just outright wrong,” Clark said.

The topic of police safety came up at the end of the council workshop session.

Councilwoman Jan Quillman, the wife of a retired Joliet police officer, said the city should consider adding police officers in next year’s budget.

Superintendent Kris Monn updated board members at Monday’s Committee of the Whole meeting on the negotiations, saying that the Teamsters initiated the posting period, which means by Friday both sides of the table need to post their latest proposal to the Illinois Education Labor Relations Board.

He said by July 29, the district will have to publish its proposal on its website.

“The public will be able to see very shortly at least the last proposal that was made from the board side,” Monn said.

At the regular board meeting, Keli Hollis, District 201 bus driver and union member, told the board she loved her job, but the working conditions have made her felt demeaned and marginalized.

“I don’t think it’s correct for anybody who gets up in the morning to go to work to be dealt with this way,” Hollis said.

“Understand that we are as professional as anybody else in this district and I ask that you see us that way. I ask that you see us as part of the team and not just the bothersome bus drivers,” Hollis said, followed by applause.

After the meeting, Monn said the board made an effort earlier this year to lease new buses because they’re aging. He also said that district officials find every one of their employees invaluable to the success of the district.

“Everyone is a key player,” he said.

One bus driver spoke out against the union at the Committee of the Whole meeting. Karen Reigh, a Minooka 201 driver, said during public comment that she and other drivers enjoy their jobs and want to avoid a strike.

“We feel we have the majority and don’t want to be included into a forced dues and secret contracts,” Reigh said.

fsarver@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Construction crews at Plainfield Central High School were at work last week revamping the stadium field.

With the exception of the track, the field was rendered rocky Thursday as a result of the excavation and construction work that was being done.

Central, like all four of the high schools in Plainfield School District 202, is getting its field redone to expand and strengthen its use by students, athletes, the Plainfield Park District and others. All fields will have new video displays.

District officials plan, in a twophase project, to finish installing artificial turf at Central and South by the fall, and then tackle North and East next summer.

The fields can be used for more than games, such as homecomings and graduations, district spokesman Tom Hernandez said. Other uses could be gym classes, band practice and for rental by

community athletic organizations.

“It could be a revenue source and it creates a community opportunity that does not exist now and that’s how [other schools] have used their fields,” he said.

“It will be a benefit to be able to access the field at any time,” said South athletic director Ken Bublitz, who coached Cougars football the previous 10 years, the past five as head coach.

“Weather no longer will be a factor

as far as wear and tear. The turf field eventually will get worn down, but it will allow a number of different teams on the field, hopefully, without irreparable damage being done.”

From a football standpoint, Bublitz said, the key factor is there almost always is good footing.

“That creates different circumstances, especially late in the year when weather can be, and often is, a factor,” he said. “Everyone grows up playing football on a grass field and would love

Inspector general reviewing McFarland envelope matter

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet inspector general has been looking into what action the city can take concerning Councilman Jim McFarland’s use of city envelopes for political purposes.

The state’s attorney’s office last month said it would not pursue criminal charges in the matter, which was referred to it by the city in November.

McFarland has run Jim into new legal problems McFarland since then after being charged with driving under the influence in connection with an incident July 10. He refused to take a Breathalyzer test when stopped at 2:26 a.m. on Interstate 80 in the New Lenox area, state police said.

McFarland declined to comment at

the advice of his attorney, George Lenard. His bond was his driver’s license and a recognizance bond of $3,000, according to court records.

Lenard said he will be in court Tuesday to file a motion to preserve the police radio transmission during his client’s arrest. McFarland’s arraignment has been moved up to Tuesday.

Lenard said his client plans to plead not guilty to all charges. McFarland also was charged with improper lane use, driving 15 to 20 mph over the speed limit and operating an uninsured motor vehicle, according to court records.

“Mr. McFarland is presumed to be innocent of all the charges against him,” Lenard said. “We are in the process of conducting our own investigation.”

City officials have said they are not interested in looking into the DUI matter.

But some are looking for “closure” on McFarland’s use of city envelopes

last year for mailings that were considered political.

“We, the city, haven’t said anything,” Councilman Pat Mudron said.

“I think we need to make some sort of statement.”

Mudron said Inspector General Chris Regis has been asked to report back on what, if anything, the council can do.

The city ethics ordinance does provide for the council to initiate actions ranging from a reprimand to removal from office for political misconduct.

Mudron said any action likely would be on the lower end of that scale, and it could be the council just makes a report on what happened.

“I think that would be a nice closure of everything – here’s what happened,” Mudron said. “You flip it the other way – here’s what happened, and we’re going to do X to him. I don’t think there’s much of an X there.”

Regis confirmed that he is looking

into the McFarland envelope matter.

“That process is ongoing,” he said.

Councilman Larry Hug would not comment on what the council may have discussed on the matter, saying it would be a subject for closed session.

But Hug agreed that closure on the issue is needed.

“It needs to be finished and closed out one way or the other,” Hug said. “I just don’t know what direction that’s going to take.”

Mudron said he continues to hear from people asking whether the city plans to do anything about the envelope situation.

“I think the public deserves closure on this matter,” he said.

McFarland used envelopes, which are to be used for city business, in mailings for a veterans breakfast he sponsored, a Facebook page for lost pets that he started, and a community meeting about a controversial monopole.

The renovations of the stadiums are the first significant capital project since the construction of Plainfield East High School, Hernandez said, which opened in August 2008.

The expected cost of upgrades to the stadiums – including the video displays – is about $6.3 million.

The Board of Education approved in February bids for excavation and general construction work at Central and South to be awarded to Team Reil and Hoppy’s Landscaping, respectively, for a total of about $1.79 million to be paid by construction funds.

The amount for the same work is expected to be the same for North and East next summer.

The artificial turf for all four high schools will be about $1.73 million through a sales agreement and will be manufactured, shipped and fully installed, Hernandez wrote in an email.

The architectural fees for the project – excluding any possible cost overruns – is projected to be $476,385, he wrote.

In June, the board approved the purchase and installation of video display boards for $583,600 to be paid for by construction funds. District officials said each display board could generate an estimated $40,000 a year through advertising.

JOLIET – A judge on Monday refused to grant a new trial to a woman convicted of first-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of her roommate two summers ago.

Kadiedra S. Speed, 22, will face 20 to 60 years in prison when she is sentenced next month by Judge Daniel Rozak. Rozak heard statements and testimony Monday from Speed’s friends and relatives, as well as the family of Shaleatha M. Green.

On Aug. 31, 2014, Speed’s boyfriend, Marcus Molden, came into the Milano Bakery where she worked and told her the locks had been changed at their apartment in the 200 block of North Eastern Avenue and her property was going to be tossed out onto the lawn, according to trial testimony. Speed broke a window to get inside her bedroom and walked into the living room, where she used a knife from her purse to stab Green, 34, once in the lungs and heart.

The defense did not deny Speed killed Green, but said Green had been swinging a baseball bat at her while Speed was going to get her haircutting equipment from a closet. Both women, Molden, and Green’s boyfriend, Deondre Brefford, had been living in the

small basement apartment for about a month until the women argued the night before the slaying about Green’s relationship with Speed’s boyfriend, according to trial testimony.

“I really wish she’d seen these roommates for what they truly were.

They did not deserve her [kindness],” Green’s niece, Dominique Chapman, wrote in a statement read to Rozak.

Rozak, who decided the case after a bench trial, said he reviewed witness testimony, evidence photographs and a diagram of the apartment.

“It’s clear to me ... Miss Speed has as much right to be in this residence as the victim did,” Rozak said. “From where the bloodstains ... and bat were found, there’s no easy way to get to that closet from there. The placement of boxes and other [items] make another wall.”

Erica Speed said that after her daughter was placed in foster care at age 3, she alleges Kadiedra was abused.

Betty Williams, a co-worker from Milano’s, testified Speed asked for the OK to leave work to get her stuff and then planned to return.

“The situation happened so quickly.

I only intended to get my belongings,” Speed told Rozak.

Rozak is scheduled to hand down a sentence Aug. 3.

LOCAL BRIEFS Two hospitalized after crash in Joliet

JOLIET – One man was flown to a hospital and another is facing charges after a four-vehicle crash Monday morning at Cass and Collins streets in Joliet.

Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory said that at 6:05 a.m. a 2002 GMC Envoy was stopped at a red light on eastbound Cass Street when it was rear-ended by a 2000 Ford Econoline van.

“The impact forced both of those vehicles into the intersection, where they hit two other cars that were northbound in separate lanes,” Gregory said.

Battalion Chief Jeff Carey said ambulance crews arrived to find police officers performing CPR on the driver of the Envoy.

The 54-year-old Joliet man was taken to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox and later flown to Loyola Medical Center in Maywood with “severe head injuries,” Gregory said.

The driver of the Econoline, Octavio Vargas, 53, of Joliet, was also taken to Silver Cross Hospital and treated for injuries that were not life-threatening. Gregory said Monday that charges against Vargas were pending and there were no indications

Truck overturns, spills gravel on Joliet Road

JOLIET – No one was injured when a gravel truck overturned Monday on Schweitzer Road.

Joliet Police Lt. Tom Stein said the accident happened at 9:44 a.m. when the truck was heading east near the Chicagoland Speedway.

“The trailer’s rear wheels slid off the pavement and the driver lost control trying to get back on,” Stein said. The Austin Tyler Construction truck flipped onto its side, blocking the road and spilling gravel. The driver was not injured.

The construction company towed the truck from the roadway and cleaned up the gravel Monday morning, Stein said.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced Monday $75 million to help families living in public housing and those participating in HUD’s Housing Choice Voucher Program connect with services to further their education, find good jobs and to set them on a path to self-sufficiency.

BOLINGBROOK – Water-misting stations will be set up outdoors Saturday at The Promenade Bolingbrook mall, when as many as 35,000 people are expected to brave the heat for the 11th annual Taste of Bolingbrook.

More than 20 local food vendors and 10 nonfood vendors will on hand from noon to 10 p.m. Saturday, which is currently forecasted by the National Weather Service as a 90-plus-degree day.

The event is sponsored by AMITA Health and Ted’s Montana Grill and features establishments such as The Nest Bar & Grill, Tailgater’s Sports Bar & Grill, Chuck’s Southern Comforts and Hey Brothers Ice Cream.

Kevin O’Keeffe, executive director of the Bolingbrook Area Chamber of Commerce, said it’s no secret what makes the event a success each year.

CARL EDWARD JOHNSON JR. Carl Edward Johnson Jr., was born in 1935 in Lockport. Carl was the oldest of six children to Carl Edward Johnson Sr. and Marcelle Mae Underwood. He had five sisters and a brother.

Carl attended the University of Illinois in Champaign on a football scholarship. He was also in ROTC and a member of Theta Chi. While playing football the “Fighting Illini” in the late ’50s, Carl played with great names of American football. Drafted while a junior by the Green Bay Packers with late, great linebacker Ray Nietzsche, he elected to complete his college education. Upon graduation, he continued to play football for the Bowling AFB team in Washington, D.C., while also working as an auditor for the Air Force on the base. He received three additional draft offers to play professional football with the San Francisco 49ers, NY Giants and Baltimore Colts. Instead, he accepted an active-duty commission with the Air Force which started his 20-year career. Carl’s love for football and the opportunity to mentor young players continued while he was stationed at Robins AFB in Georgia, where he coached recreational football in Warner Robins.

Lombardi and Chris Lombardi, all of Braidwood; his loving mother, Frances Lombardi of Wilmington; one sister, JoAnne (Michael) Jostes of Wilmington; one niece, Valerie Jostes; and one nephew, Steven Jostes. He is also survived by numerous sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law and nieces and nephews from the Petty family who will truly miss him.

Elder Lena Mae Alexander, was born Dec. 21, 1943, to Oscar Grays and Bessie Mae Grays in Gilmore, Arkansas.

She was a faithful member of Prayer Tower Ministries COGIC. She was a faithful prayer warrior; member of the Mother’s Board, assisted Mother Thomas with the Street Ministry; and worked with Elder King at the City Wide Tent Crusade.

She is preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Juanita Hinton; and two brothers, Oscar Grays Jr. and Pete Grays.

After retiring from the Air Force, Carl worked at the Georgia Institute of Technology as the manager of the Internal Auditing Department until his retirement in 2004. In 1961, Carl married the late Shirley Dolores Sowder of Roanoke, VA. They were married 54 years. They have three children, Carl David Johnson, James Matthew Johnson, and Mary Margaret Johnson.

Carl and Dodie have seven grandchildren and five stepgrandchildren. He also left three beloved German shepherds.

Carl’s 20-year career in the Air Force took them many places with the most exciting being Ramey AFB, Puerto Rico. They moved to Douglasville, GA, in 1979 upon his retirement from the Air Force. They were members of First Baptist Church of Douglasville. In 2010, they moved to the Powder Springs area to be closer to their children and grandchildren.

Carl is survived by Ronnie Johnson, Norma Catlin and Sandra Hoskins.

Thomas J. McGrath, M.D., age 84, of Joliet. Peacefully at rest in his home on July 17, 2016.

Born on June 2, 1932, in Hammond, Indiana. Attended Rehn, Saint Patrick’s, and Saint Raymond’s School, Joliet Township High School (Class of 1949), Miami University (Class of 1952), and University of Illinois School of Medicine in Chicago. Completed his internship and residency at Cook County Hospital, specializing in obstetrics and gynecology.

Served as a flight surgeon at the U.S. Air Force Academy. Returned to Joliet in 1960 to specialize in women’s health. Founding partner in the Joliet Medical Group. Served as medical director then later chief of staff at Saint Joseph’s Hospital. Volunteered at Will/Grundy County Medical Clinic. He enjoyed many years serving others in private practice until his retirement in 1996. In his retirement years, he served on the Board of Directors at St. Joseph’s Hospital and University of St. Francis. He also served as medical director for Captive Insurance.

In addition to his passion for medicine, Tom enjoyed sailing, flying, playing the piano, golfing, fishing, reading and traveling. But none of his interests was as important as spending time with his family.

Survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Joan (nee Lynch); his children, Michael (Robin), Thomas, Kathleen (Thomas) Boucher, Jane (Timothy) Schmig, Laura, Patrick (Stacey) and Elizabeth (Michael) Ryan; and grandchildren, Christina (Justin) Spring, Thomas and Michael McGrath, Anne, Kathleen and Claire Schmig, Margaret, John and Patrick McGrath and Mary, Hannah and Michael Ryan; Great-grandfather of Kathryn Spring; brother to Suzanne Whalen and Priscilla (Robert) Borgstrom; brother-in-law to Virginia Bourg and John (Peggi) Lynch; and uncle to many nieces and nephews.

Mary Kathleen Papesh “Kathy” (nee Connor), age 66, passed away peacefully after a brief illness with her family by her side on July 15, 2016, at her home in Channahon.

Kathy was born in Peoria on March 10, 1950, to William and Eileen (nee Richardson) Connor. She graduated from Joliet Township High School, Class of 1967. She studied and became an X-ray technician at St. Joseph Hospital. She was initially employed at St. Joseph Hospital and continued to work at Joliet Medical Group and Glenwood Medical Group. She also worked part time for Geotech Inc. Consulting Engineers and Land Surveyors.

Kathy was a 28-year breast cancer survivor and a proud “Reach to Recovery” volunteer for the American Cancer Society. She volunteered at Willow Falls, visiting with residents and organizing craft projects. She was also an active volunteer at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home.

She loved to play euchre with her friends in Shorewood Glen and Camelot Subdivisions.

Kathy was also an avid bowler. She bowled with the Early Bird Bowlers at Town and Country for 30 years.

Kathy always gave of herself. She thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and especially her grandchildren.

Kathy appreciated the little things in life and loved taking pictures and sharing them with others. She enjoyed traveling and was blessed to have traveled to over 10 countries and 42 states throughout the U.S. Kathy married her high school sweetheart, Jerry Papesh, on Aug. 24, 1968. She was his true companion for almost 48 years. She was a devoted mother to son Bryan and Kim Papesh and son Chris and Missi Papesh; cherished grandmother of Jake, Alli, Olivia and Bailey; sister to John Connor; and a special friend to so many. Kathy truly knew no stranger.

Kathy is preceded in death by her father, William Connor (1984); her mother, Eileen Connor (2012); and her sister, Linda Dobbs (2007).

The Associated Press TAYLORVILLE – Gov. Bruce Rauner signed legislation Monday to punish Illinois retailers that sell socalled bath salts, which are chemicals that mimic the effects of cocaine and other powerful drugs.

“We’ve got to do everything we can to end the scourge of drug addiction,” Rauner said before signing the bill in Taylorville, about 25 miles southeast of Springfield.

Rauner called bath salts “very dangerous” chemicals that are causing problems in Illinois’ rural communities.

Illinois and every other state already prohibit the sale of bath salts.

However, the new state law allows prosecutors to go after convenience stores and gas stations that knowingly sell the synthetic drugs, which often are disguised as everyday products.

CHICAGO – McDonald’s and Starbucks are implementing filtering technology that blocks customers using Wi-Fi from accessing pornography sites.

The move follows a campaign from anti-pornography groups Enough is Enough and the National Center on Sexual Exploitation to demand the chains filter out pornography.

Oak Brook, Illinois-based McDonald’s said in a statement that Wi-Fi filtering has been activated in the majority of its nearly 14,000 restaurants nationwide.

Illinois treasurer to auction unclaimed items at state fair

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Treasurer’s Office plans to auction unclaimed property at this year’s Illinois State Fair.

Some items are rare and interesting. The office said it will have a rookie card of late Chicago Cubs star Ernie Banks, an 1856 flying eagle cent and an Elvis Presley concert stub.

There also will be a Cartier watch and a pair of new 1997 Air Jordan shoes.

The office plans to auction 21,500 unclaimed items in 255

It’s the first time in a decade that the office is having an auction at the fair. The last live auction was in 2006.

Items are put up for auction after 10 years of attempts to locate owners. The office has had three online auctions so far this year.

Police investigating after 12-year-old Rockford girl shot

ROCKFORD – Officials in Rockford said a 12-year-old girl is in critical condition after being shot multiple times.

The Rockford Register Star reported that the girl was hospitalized Monday morning after the Sunday afternoon shooting.

Rockford Police Chief Dan O’Shea said officers are looking for occupants of a dark-colored sport coupe.

The vehicle was seen at about 3 p.m. Sunday chasing, and its occupants opening fire on, another vehicle. Police said

as many as five people were in the vehicle being chased.

The girl’s gunshot wounds are considered life-threatening. She was not immediately identified.

Bomb-sniffing dog found day after it went missing

ALSIP – A dog used to sniff out bombs for the Amtrak Police Department has been found after going missing this weekend.

The Amtrak Police Department said “Hako” was found Sunday, a day after it went missing from its handler’s home in the Chicago suburb of Alsip.

Police in neighboring Crestwood announced that the dog had been found, but neither the department nor Amtrak had any details.

The brown sable German shepherd belongs to the Transportation Security Administration and is assigned to the Amtrak Police Department.

Amazon to open 1st pickup location in state at U of Illinois

CHAMPAIGN – The University of Illinois is partnering with Amazon to make the school’s Illini Union Bookstore the first pickup location in the state.

The News-Gazette reported that the Amazon@Illinois location is scheduled to open by the end of October. Amazon customers will be able to have their purchases delivered to the store instead of shipped to their residences. Same-day pickup will be available for some customers on certain items.

Amazon is building its own space in the union. It will pay rent and have its own employees.

Illinois Union Bookstore Director Tod Petrie said it’s a “win-win” for students. He said the school “has to evolve with the students.”

Purdue University is the only other Big Ten school to offer the service.

In 10 turbulent days, 10 law enforcement officers have been killed by attackers – at a protest march in Dallas, a courthouse in Michigan and now a convenience store in Baton Rouge.

Together, the shootings represent the deadliest attack on law enforcement in decades.

The officers who died Sunday all lived just outside Denham Springs, Louisiana, a quiet bedroom community across the Amite River from Baton Rouge, which has been in turmoil for two weeks. Tensions rose sharply after the death of a black man killed by white Baton Rouge officers after a scuffle at a convenience store.

The community mourned three of its sons – Matthew Gerald, 41, Brad Garafola, 45, and Montrell Jackson, 32 – all husbands and fathers described by friends as being committed to protecting and serving the public.

PARIS – Authorities investigating the truck driver who killed 84 people in a Bastille Day attack painted a complex picture Monday of a man who did not seem devout but had recently become interested in jihadi violence and researched past attacks in France and the United States, including one on a gay nightclub in Orlando.

Paris prosecutor Francois Molins, who oversees terrorism investigations, said that by all accounts, Mohamed Lahouaiyej Bouhlel drank, ate pork and had an “unbridled sex life.” But his computer and phone showed online searches relating to IS and other jihadi groups.

Molins said Bouhlel recently had grown a beard and told people it was for religious reasons.

Officials have said the attack obviously was premeditated, but they have not found evidence that Bouhlel had coordinated with an extremist network.

Authorities have fired nearly 9,000 police officers, bureaucrats and others, while detaining thousands more alleged to have been involved in Friday night’s attempted coup, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported.

CLEVELAND – After a harsh primary, Donald Trump’s general election campaign officially opened with a warm and personal validation from his wife, Melania Trump, who kicked off the Republican convention by assuring voters that the brash candidate has the character and determination to unite a divided nation.

“If you want someone to fight for you and your country, I can assure you, he is the guy,” Mrs. Trump told delegates in her highest-profile appearance of the presidential campaign.

Her husband made a brief, but showy entrance, into the convention hall to introduce her, emerging from shadows and declaring to cheers, “We’re going to win, we’re going to win so big.” He returned to the stage after his wife’s remarks, greeting her warmly with a kiss and cheering her on along with the crowd.

Mrs. Trump’s appearance was a sharp contrast to most of the night’s other speakers, who painted a bleak picture of an American future that they said only her husband can correct.

A parade of speakers told emotional stories about loved ones killed while serving in the military or at the hands of people in the United States illegally. And they cast the turbulent times as a direct result of weak leadership

by President Barack Obama and Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, who spent four years in the administration.

“Who would trust Hillary Clinton to protect them? I wouldn’t,” former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani said in one of the night’s most fiery addresses.

Many of the party’s past and future stars were glaringly missing from the lineup, underscoring the concerns GOP leaders have with closely aligning themselves with Trump.

Republican divisions erupted briefly on the convention floor Monday afternoon after party officials adopted rules by a shouted voice vote. Trump hoped the chaos would be little more than a footnote. Despite persistent party divisions, his campaign is confident Republicans will come together behind their shared disdain for Clinton.

Republicans also highlighted at length the deadly 2012 attacks on Americans in Benghazi, Libya, while Clinton was serving as secretary of state. The mother of one of the victims choked back tears as she personally blamed Clinton for her son’s death and accused her of giving a false explanation for the attack.

“If Hilary Clinton can’t give us the truth, why should we give her the presidency?” Pat Smith said.

The convention comes amid a wrenching period of violence and unrest, both in the United States and around the world. In a matter of weeks, Americans have seen deadly police shootings, a shocking ambush of police in Texas and escalating racial tensions, not to mention a failed coup in Turkey and gruesome Bastille Day attack in Nice, France. Three police officers were killed in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on the eve of the convention’s opening day.

Convention speakers relentlessly cast the troubling times as a result of ineffective leadership by President Barack Obama and Clinton, who spent four years in his administration.

The major reason for its snail-like recovery is the consumer, who accounts for 70 percent of gross domestic product and is flat-A broke. The Federal Reserve’s $3 trillion of quantitative easing and the hundreds of billions of Troubled Asset Relief Program dollars never touched the hand of the working man.

Rather, it was all a boondoggle for the “top 1 percent,” whose net worths increased by deficits Congress created

Prior to the Great Recession, the typical middle-class American family earned $52,500 a year before taxes; today that amount is about $50,000. But during the past seven years, the economy has inched forward as consumers have borrowed money for cars, homes, vacations, toys, etc. That’s scary! Credit card debt has increased 47 percent since the Great Recession, with households taking on $57 billion in new card debt in 2015. It’s easy.

Banks offer 30-year home mortgages with 3 percent down and finance new cars for 96 months. By the end of 2015, Americans’ credit card debt totaled $3.3 trillion. And CardHub predicts that 2016 credit card debt will increase by $62 billion. CNN tells us that Americans’ total credit card debt in 2011 was only $769 billion, so there was certainly an outlandish increase in four years. And according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the average 65-year-old baby boomer has nearly 50 percent more mortgage

debt and 30 percent more auto debt than 65-year-olds had in 2005. Record high consumer debt – along with a level of student loan debt that was unheard of a decade ago – is destroying the balance sheet of America’s future.

The Fed made a huge mistake with quantitative easing, and Congress made a big boo-boo in handling TARP funds. Those trillions should have been used for shovel-ready jobs, to pay welders, steelworkers, crane operators, truckers and laborers to repair airports, seaports, bridges, roads, dams and other parts of our infrastructure. The wages from their labors around the nation would have created a geometric demand for new goods and services. Instead, those trillions were given to and invested in the stock market by the 1 percent.

Resultantly, between 2008 and 2015, the Dow Jones industrial average doubled, from 9,000 to 18,000. The 1 percent splurged on expensive toys, such as $140 million yachts, $85 million homes, $60 million private jets and $150 million Warhols, all glorified in living color by the print and broadcast media. Still, the economy is in a mire because there’s little money remaining for the common man to spend on goods and services. Record

numbers of people have stopped looking for work, and wages are lower than they were a decade ago.

Corporate profits are also showing signs of stress. And corporations such as American Express, Macy’s, IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Sears, Microsoft, Bank of America and Citigroup are laying off employees by the tens of thousands. Some say there’s more to come.

It’s not Barack Obama’s fault. It’s a dysfunctional Congress that’s too interested in self-enrichment. It’s a greedy Congress that’s more interested in special interest groups than it is in citizens’ welfare. It’s a shameless Congress acting like the old Soviet Politburo, the Ukrainian parliament and Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies.

It’s also a Congress whose members, during their formative years, were taught by their mommies and daddies to fervently believe in Santa Claus.

Upon discovering the truth, most were traumatized and became emotionally unstable. Sadly, few members received counseling.

Are stocks the new bonds? Why investors are buying now

The Associated Press NEW YORK – As bond yields plunge to record lows and investors look for income, they’re pouring money into stocks, sending the market to its own record highs.

Once upon a time, if you were an investor who wanted a steady stream of income, you would probably think of U.S. Treasury bonds. Backed by the solid credit of the U.S. government, those bonds were considered ultra-dependable forms of income that wouldn’t lose value.

You couldn’t count on stocks to pay you a return like that. The dividends stocks paid were usually smaller, and you also ran the risk of losing some of your investment if the stock price declined.

Now that stocks, broadly speaking, actually pay more than many bonds do, investors’ thinking has changed.

“Stocks have become the new bonds,” says Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at BMO Private Bank. “Income investors have opted to invest in equities ver-

sus lower-yielding bonds.”

The drop in bond yields has been dramatic. At the start of 2014 the yield on the 10-year Treasury note was 3 percent, and a decade ago it was twice that much.

Now it’s around 1.6 percent.

The dividend yield on S&P 500 stocks, meanwhile, hasn’t changed much over the last few years. It’s around 2.1 percent, far more than what the 10-year Treasury pays.

There are several factors behind the plunge in bond yields. Investors have tended to buy bonds when they feel jittery or when they anticipate the U.S. economy is slowing down, but these days they also are driven to buy bonds when they feel the alternatives are worse, or if they’re worried about disruptions in the global economy. When demand for bonds increases, it sends yields lower.

Investors have flocked to Treasury bonds as they worried about everything from the U.S. economy to a slowdown in China to Britain’s recent vote to leave the European Union. And central banks including the Fed have bought bonds in recent years in an effort to stimulate the

economy by keeping long-term interest rates low.

There are many other markets for bonds, but the U.S. government is considered the gold standard because of the country’s rock-solid credit.

If you think yields are low here, just look at other countries. The yield on the United Kingdom’s 10-year note is about 0.8 percent, France’s is 0.2 percent, and in Japan and Germany, those yields are negative, which means investors actually pay for the privilege of continuing to own them.

“We’ve got a much higher yield,” says Scott Wren, global equity strategist for Wells Fargo’s Investment Institute.

“That attracts money.”

That difference means it may be a long time before yields on U.S. government bonds go much higher. Faced with poor prospects for income from bonds, investors have poured money into stocks, especially those that pay high dividends and appear less likely to lose value in a downturn.

The stocks that pay the largest dividends are phone companies and utilities,

and investors have clamored for them all year. The prices of S&P 500 phone and utility companies have soared about 20 percent in 2016, far more than the rest of the market. Even with those gains, phone companies still pay a dividend yield of 4.3 percent and utility companies pay 3.3 percent, still way more than the 10-year Treasury note.

There have been other periods where stocks had bigger yields than bonds. Often, it meant stocks had dropped sharply in value, such as the financial crisis of 2008-09 or the European debt crisis of 2012. This time is different: the quest for income has helped push stocks to alltime highs, and high demand may keep them there.

That’s also partly because large companies in the U.S. look pretty good compared with the markets of Europe and Japan, where growth is sluggish or nonexistent, or China, where economic growth is slowing down.

All the while, the U.S. economy has steadily churned along. Despite a lot of nervousness from investors, it hasn’t run out of steam yet.

Shaw Media correspondent NAPERVILLE – In Monday’s opening-round game at the IHSBCA/Phil Lawler Summer State Tournament at Naperville Central, Plainfield South (143) was tied with Lyons Township, 2-2, in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Cougars’ Nick Enloe coaxed a leadoff walk from reliever Grant Leader. Konnor Ash then stepped into the

batter’s box.

“I told coach (Phil) Bodine I was going to play ‘a little butcher boy’ and help Nick (Enloe) steal second base,” Ash said. “After Nick stole second, I was going to try to hit the ball hard and get Nick home with the win.”

Ash was prophetic as his wild butcher-boy attempt at Leader’s pitch allowed Enloe to steal second. Ash then completed his prophesy, ripping Leader’s next pitch, into center field for a walkoff dou-

ble as Enloe raced home for the 3-2 win.

Plainfield South (14-3) moves on to Tuesday’s championship bracket game against St. Charles North (15-1) at 12:30 p.m. at Benedictine in Lisle. St. Charles North blanked Brother Rice, 4-0, later at Naperville Central.

“It was awesome to hit the ball hard to center and get Nick (Enloe) home with the game-winner,” Ash said.

“On Konnor’s game-winner, Nick Enloe had to hold up a little in the begin-

ning to see if the ball would be caught,” South coach Phil Bodine said. “After the ball dropped in the gap, Nick was nonstop to the plate. I wasn’t going to give him a stop sign.

“If the game would have gone to the eighth, Konnor would have relieved Austin (Marozas), on the mound. Konnor told me he didn’t want to pitch in the eighth and would win it for us.”

The game was scheduled for 10 a.m. at North Central College, but Sunday night’s rain made the North Central infield a lake, and the game was rescheduled for 2 p.m. at Naperville Central.

Lyons (17-6) jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first inning against Marozas on a wild pitch. In the second inning, Lyons had runners on first and second with two outs. Cougars first baseman John Galczak snared a shot off the bat of Bryce Moskiewicz and flipped to Marozas at first for the third out of the inning, preserving the 1-0 deficit for the Cougars.

Lions starting pitcher Matt Phillips made it 2-0 Lyons in the top of the fifth on an RBI single.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Cougars evened things up.

Pinch-hitter Brad Roberts and leadoff man Nick Mayerhofer both singled to right. Sophomore catcher Justin McGuigan laid down his third successful bunt single of the tournament, and when Phillips threw the ball down the right field, Roberts scored. Ash brought home Mayerhofer on a one-out groundout, Marozas pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the

sixth with his seventh strikeout.

He retired the Lions in order in the seventh. He finished with a five-hitter with eight strikeouts and four walks.

“I knew going in that I would have to throw strikes and let my defense make the plays,” Marozas said. “I gutted it out for the seven innings and we rallied back to win.”

Enloe was on base three times with two walks and a single. Enloe, who had a couple of walkoff hits this spring for the Cougars, felt good about Ash’s walk-off hit Monday.

“I was really happy to coax the leadoff walk,” Enloe said.

“My job is to get on base and it was good to steal second and it was awesome when Konnor drove me home with the game-winner.”

“Austin didn’t have his best stuff but got stronger as the game progressed,” Bodine said.

“I can’t say enough about how these kids just battle through to victory for us. They are amazing.

They get on each other and push each other to win. Brad Roberts had a big pinch-hit and Konnor Ash came through for us again.”

In the first-round games at Benedictine, Huntley (17-6-1) defeated Warren (17-3), 11-2, and Fremd (16-5) outlasted Naperville Central 1-0, in eight innings.

Three other players shot a 72 to finish at even-par for the day. They were Grace Kil, Siyun Liu and Taylor Thompson. Chelsea Harris and Rebecca Klongland each fired a 73 and are five strokes off the pace while Sarah Hoffman and Hannah Kim both finished with 74 totals.

The top local finisher was Mokena’s Alyssa Gromala, who is tied for 29th with a six-over round of 78. The Providence Catholic senior, who had friend

“I started the summer tournaments a little weak, but then I really picked it up and have been firing some good rounds,” Gromala said. “I just came back from California and played great out at Junior Worlds, and it was a great experience and really fun. This is one of my favorite tournaments to come out to. I love Mistwood and it’s my favorite course, my home course.

“I feel that it prepares me for college playing at larger yardages than I’m used to. It’s a tough course, but it’s also really fun. I feel like I played good for what I was up against. This is definitely a confidence-booster and I hope to come back tomorrow and shoot a little lower. I had a really good start but I kind of lost it a little toward the end, but I held in there.”

Bolingbrook’s Jessica Yuen, who finished in fifth place last year, posted an 84 on Monday. Minooka’s Mallory Carr turned in an 89 while Homer Glen’s Breanna Hanus had a 97.

ROMEOVILLE – In last year’s Phil Kosin Illinois Women’s Open, only three individuals finished at par or better during the three-day tournament at Mistwood Golf Club.

One of those was champion Madasyn Pettersen, who is not in this year’s field. But the second- and third-place finishers from a year ago, Brooke Ferrell and Dana Gattone, respectively, are not only back, but also share the first-round lead after Monday’s play.

Ferrell, a senior at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, and Gattone, a junior at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, both shot four-under par rounds of 68 to grab a one-stroke lead over third-place Stephanie Miller, who’s a senior at Illinois.

A native of Edgerton, Wisconsin, Ferrell posted her score in the third group of the day and it looked like that might stand, but Addison’s Gattone was able to equal that total in the

third-to-last group and then Elgin’s Miller followed with her effort in the next threesome.

Gattone finished with five birdies, 12 pars and just one bogey, which came on the first hole while Ferrell had an eagle on the third hole plus five birdies, nine pars and three bogeys.

Miller wound up with five birdies, 11 pars and two bogeys during her opening round.

“I played well here last year and had a 69 on the last day,” Gattone said.

“I’m just really comfortable out here.

I think it’s a course that sets up great for my game and it takes a lot of course management. Honestly, I had a friend make me a yardage book about four years ago with a lot of details out here and I’ve used it ever since and I think that’s a huge advantage.

“My putting was definitely a highlight. I had a tournament last week in St. Louis and I was striking the ball great but I just couldn’t roll in the putts. I worked a ton on it over the weekend and after bogeying the first hole, I was rolling putts in and felt

Murphy’s Olympic potential evident early on

dgoss@shawmedia.com Samantha Quigley, these days the women’s basketball coach at University of St. Francis, said Joliet Catholic Academy graduate Kelly Murphy on the volleyball court is not unlike Quigley’s sister Allie, who plays for the WNBA’s Chicago Sky, on the basketball court.

“Kelly walks in a gym and it’s that attention she draws,” said Quigley, who like her sister was among JCA’s prominent multi-sport athletes. “Her demeanor is low key. She is very humble. She is almost a quiet assassin. She reminds me a lot of Allie in that regard.”

Quigley was describing the Joliet area’s newest Olympian. Murphy, a former University of Florida all-American, was among 12 named last week to the U.S. women’s volleyball team that will compete in the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, beginning Aug. 6. The United States has won silver medals at the last two Olympics.

A 6-foot-2 left-hander, Murphy is the area’s first Olympian in her sport.

Lockport graduate Haley Auguello is a member of the U.S. women’s wrestling team for these Olympics. Among former female Olympians from the area are Lisa Chesson from Plainfield Central, a defenseman on the 2010 Winter Olympics hockey team; Ginny Georgantas from Lockport, who played softball for Greece in the 2004 Summer Olympics, and Cathy Boswell from Joliet West, a member of the U.S. women’s basketball team that won gold in Los Angeles in 1984.

Quigley was captain of the JCA volleyball team when Murphy, who grew up in Wilmington, was an underclassman.

“It’s amazing to see her develop, the way she commands the floor, her versatility,” Quigley said. “She can set, hit, play the back row, serve. She can do it all.

“It’s amazing to have had someone with celebrity status playing right next to you, to think she is one of the best in the world. She has been playing professionally and that’s great, but the Olympics is all the best in the world.

“When the Olympics are going on, I’ll definitely be saying, ‘I used to set her in high school.’ ” Murphy’s mother, Sandy, played volleyball at Illinois State and is a former coach at Wilmington. JCA coach Christine Scheibe talked with her early on about how she planned to use her daughter’s many talents.

She was groomed all along for one position and now she is realizing so much success at the highest level.

“From the minute she walked in the gym, I knew she was special. She spent one day with the freshmen and then came up to the varsity. I had a conversation with her mom early on about how we planned to use her on the varsity level. Right away we knew the impact she could make on the team. She was different than most 14-15-year-olds.”

Murphy played setter, right-side hitter and outside hitter at Joliet Catholic, where she led the Angels to a 13331 four-year record. They won four regional titles, three sectional crowns and finished fourth in 2005 and third in 2006 with Murphy dominating.

Individually, she ranks first at JCA in career service points (821), single-season aces (81) and career kills (1,417), second in career assists (1,199) and third in career blocks (172). In all, she is in the top 10 in nine of 12 categories.

To cap her Angels career, she was named the Gatorade National Player of the Year as a senior.

During her career at Florida, Murphy continued to be an all-around force. She was the AVCA Freshman of the Year, a second-team All-American as a sophomore and first team each of her last two seasons. She has played in numerous international competitions and professionally in Japan the last two years.

Just before being named to the Olympic team as an opposite, Murphy helped Team USA finish second at the FIVB World Grand Prix in Thailand.

In the title match against two-time defending Olympic champion Brazil, she totaled seven kills, eight blocks and five digs.

“I definitely was not good enough to go to the Olympics myself, so the nextbest thing is to have coached someone playing in the Olympics,” Scheibe said. “Having an Olympian shows the level of talent we are producing. We have had people who played in national championship games, in the WNBA and now the Olympics.”

It’s a shame Chicago did not win the bid for these Olympics.

“I knew from the very beginning that Kelly was going to play volleyball as long as possible,” Scheibe said.

“This is a dream come true for her.

“That’s why we were rooting so hard four years ago for Chicago to get these Olympics. I had a feeling she would be playing in them.”

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Longtime Bears cornerback Charles Tillman is retiring from the NFL after 13 seasons.

The 35-year-old Tillman, known for his “peanut punch” after forcing 44 career fumbles, spent his first 12 seasons with the Bears and went to two Pro Bowls.

He started 12 games last season with the Carolina Panthers before suffering a season-ending knee injury and missing the team’s run

Michael Mumme hit his third home run in two days and David Studer also homered as Crest Hill beat Oak Park, 8-3, Sunday night to win the Crest Hill Region tournament and punch its ticket to Bay City. The zone will run July 28 through July 31.

Mumme hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning and Studer later added a two-run shot. Matt Toth singled and doubled.

Winning pitcher Rom Esquivel entered in the third inning with Crest Hill leading, 3-2. He

players seen by top schools while competing against the nation’s best.

CHICAGO – Anthony Rizzo hit a three-run homer, Jon Lester pitched 72/3 innings and the Cubs stopped an eight-game losing streak against the New York Mets with a 5-1 victory Monday night in a rematch of last year’s NL Championship Series.

With one out and two on in the third inning, Rizzo fouled off five straight 2-2 pitches from Steven Matz before driving a changeup deep into the right-center bleachers for his 22nd homer.

The crowd of 41,353 cheered wildly as Rizzo rounded the bases on a picturesque night at Wrigley Field. The All-Star slugger is bat-

ting .339 with three homers and 10 RBIs in July.

The last time the Mets had visited the iconic neighborhood ballpark, they finished off a sweep of the Cubs to advance to the World Series. They swept the Cubs again in New York from June 30 to July 3, roughing up Lester for one of the wins.

This time around was much different.

Lester (10-4) allowed one run – Wilmer Flores’ leadoff homer in the seventh – and four hits in his first win in a month. David Ross added a sacrifice fly in the sixth, and Albert Almora Jr. singled in Matt Szczur in the eighth as the NL Central leaders won for the fourth time in five games since

Earnhardt puts health first CHARLOTTE, N.C. – There was a time when drivers raced injured, when nothing could get them to climb out of their seat.

The rules didn’t allow racers to be hurt, sitting out a week would be catastrophic in the point standings, and, ultimately, the payout.

Not being able to drive with broken bones, blisters, burns, illness, any ailment at all, could derail a season. Even Dale worse, it could cost a Earnhardt Jr. driver his job.

So it’s a testament to NASCAR that Dale Earnhardt Jr. felt strong enough last week to take himself out of his car because he couldn’t shake symptoms that could be concussion-related. NASCAR’s most popular driver benched himself for Sunday’s race at New Hampshire and he will await further tests to see whether he’s able to drive this weekend at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Earnhardt said he’s battling balance issues and nausea and is uncertain when he will be back in a race car.

“My mind feels real sharp,” he said in a podcast recorded Sunday night.

“I’ve struggled with my balance over the last four, five days and I definitely wouldn’t be able to drive a race car (last weekend). Making the right decision was out of the question, I made the decision I had to make. It’s just going to take a lot of patience.”

Tales of drivers racing hurt date back to the beginning of nearly every series. On the same day Earnhardt was watching someone else drive his car in New Hampshire, IndyCar ace Josef Newgarden was powering through on the street course at Toronto with a broken hand. When he wrecked late in the race, his in-car camera caught Newgarden in serious pain and favoring his broken hand.

Don’t forget when Ricky Rudd raced with his swollen eyes taped open in the Daytona 500 or Richard Petty driving for weeks with a severe neck injury or the late Dale Earnhardt winning the pole at Watkins Glen with a broken collarbone. More recently, Denny Hamlin twice raced immediately after tearing the ACL in one of his knees and Brad Keselowski won at Pocono a week after breaking his foot.

About 15 years ago, Earnhardt Jr. revealed in an interview that he thought he’d driven with concussion symptoms several times in 2001. His admission led to a tightened medical review policy in which Earnhardt had to be seen by a doctor before he could race after he was briefly knocked unconscious in a 2002 crash at Dover. As the years went on, Earnhardt became smarter about his health. He missed two races during the

Dashed championship hopes would still be the case for any driver injured during NASCAR’s 10-race playoffs, but the sanctioning body has made it easier for drivers to admit they are hurt. By allowing teams to apply for a waiver so the driver will still be eligible to make the playoffs, NASCAR made it possible for Earnhardt to take himself out of the car.

Granted, playoff hopes shouldn’t trump health issues – especially concussions, something that could cause long-term damage – but this very small step has given flexibility in a system that previously had none.

Team owner Rick Hendrick made it clear he doesn’t want a driver to sacrifice his health to stay in the race car.

“Our guys know that the most important thing is their health, and if they’re in an accident and they feel like they’ve had a concussion, there’s a protocol and they need to go through it,” Hendrick said before Sunday’s race.

“It’s hard to get out of the car, but we want (Earnhardt) for the long haul.

He wants to race for a long time, so we are going to let the doctors make those decisions.”

It’s not clear when Earnhardt was injured – he was in crashes at Michigan on June 12 and Daytona on July 2 – and his symptoms originally led Earnhardt to believe his problem was allergy or sinus related. So he raced at Kentucky two weeks ago not feeling well, and when it didn’t improve, he saw a neurological specialist who diagnosed “concussion-like symptoms.”

It could be argued that based on Earnhardt’s concussion history, NASCAR should have had him tested after one or both of his accidents. But, NASCAR has made it easier than ever for a driver to lessen the stakes of seeking treatment and the participant should take some responsibility for their own health. In the end, Earnhardt did the very best thing he could to help himself.

He may also end up being the example for all drivers to put their health above everything else in racing. Earnhardt, who noted in his podcast that his most recent ImPACT test matched his preseason baseline test, will now follow a treatment laid out by his doctors that includes exercises to retrain his brain.

Three things to watch on the defensive line in training camp: Hicks’ impact: The former Patriot

and Saint might be the strongest player on the team, and he’s going to have some great battles in camp against

It can be seen as a position battle of sorts, but the Bears rotate their defensive linemen so much that we’ll see plenty of both of them. Intrigue in camp often comes from rookies, and with Bullard considered by draft analysts to be a steal for the Bears, fans will want to see what he can do in Bourbonnais.

Kyle Long once the pads are on. Hicks is an upgrade over Jenkins and came into his own after being traded to New England last season, registering three sacks and seven quarterback hits in limited time.

Coach Bill Belichick wanted to keep Hicks with the Patriots, but he signed with the Bears, for whom he will be a full-time starter at one of the defensive end spots. Last year’s line combined for only 12 tackles for loss – five of those coming from Goldman – so Hicks is going to be counted on to use that brute strength and massive frame to get into the backfield.

Bullard’s learning curve: A thirdround pick out of Florida, Bullard should get opportunities. Fangio hinted as much at that when discussing Bullard during the rookie minicamp, saying they expect some early contributions from the rookie.

With the top four linemen probably set, it’s likely at least one of these players gets cut this summer. Sutton got the most playing time last year and brings value as the backup nose tackle. Ferguson transitioned nicely to the 3-4 defense before a knee injury ended his 2015 campaign. Washington has rare size that should fit well as a 3-4 base defensive end, but he missed all of last year with a quad injury.

More than an exercise class

Will-Grundy Medical Clinic’s Zumba program includes many aspects of wellness

These are the benefits of a weightloss community.

Thanks to the volunteers who began a Zumba program two years ago through the Will-Grundy Medical Clinic, people who can’t afford a gym membership, or are afraid to walk through their neighborhoods, now have those benefits.

A celebration of the expansion of the clinic’s wellness program is scheduled for July 26. The event will feature Zumba classes in the parking lot and a variety of health-related information.

“There will be information on lowering cholesterol, how to get enough exercise, portion control, healthy portion size and how to read labels so you don’t get too much sugar and fat,” said Shawn West, the clinic’s executive director.

“We have found that the more information people have, the better they are able to take charge of their health.”

Thanks to dedicated volunteers – more than 350 clinicwide, many of them health professionals – the clinic was able to expand its wellness services during the past two years, West said. One popular component of those services are the Zumba classes, which attract about 60 people – mostly women – each time and are held at the Spanish Community Center in Joliet.

“Prior to that, we had offered salsasize but only to our diabetic patients,” West said. “Once we started Zumba, we offered it to all our patients and to some people from the community, if they were interested.”

This year, the volunteer Zumba teachers added two “Biggest Loser” challenges to the classes. The first contest ran 16 weeks – from January through April – and the second ran just 10 weeks – from April through June.

The focus, said Carly Torkel of Romeoville, a nurse and volunteer Zumba teacher, was on body weight lost, not pounds. In addition to monitoring weight loss, the contestants had the option of being measured, so they could track inches lost, too. They also filled out food diaries.

“The idea was for them to become more aware of what they were eating on a daily basis and how much water they were drinking,” Torkel said.

The second challenge winner, Rosario Pina, 29, of Joliet, lost nine pounds and 5.66 percent of her body weight.

Speaking through interpreters, both women said they were pleased with the contest and with the Zumba classes.

Cornejo, who had gestational diabetes during her last pregnancy, said she no longer drinks soda and she now eats more vegetables. She feels healthier since she joined Zumba two years ago (She took a break during her pregnan-

cy), a good thing considering Cornejo has a family history of diabetes.

Rosario said she feels healthier, too, and wants to lose 20 more pounds. She’s also drinking less soda and more water, as well as watching her carbohydrate intake. Her weakness? Not bread, she said laughing and shaking her head.

But the Zumba volunteers say their classes focus on more than weight control and exercise. For instance, another teacher, Rosy Gallegos of Crest Hill, recently had a friend die from breast cancer. So Gallegos is now looking for way for her students to receive free mammograms, Torkel said.

“When ladies get their mammograms, she gives them a ribbon with their name on it,” Torkel said.

Gallegos, who works in informational technology at Lewis University in Romeoville, said she’s lost 40 pounds since she started exercising with Zumba and could have lost more except, “I have a

7-year-old at home who wants pizza and macaroni and cheese.”

But like her students, Gallegos keeps the goal of healthy and fit in mind. For her birthday on Oct. 24, 2011, Gallegos signed up for her first Zumba class as her birthday gift to herself.

Four years ago, Gallegos became certified to teach Zumba and has since done so at various locations. Gallegos said she looks good and feels good, and she wants to pass both traits onto her students.

“That’s my mission in life,” Gallegos said. “To empower women any way I can.”

Hormone therapy benefits vary Dear Dr. K: I’m in my third year of menopause, and my doctor won’t prescribe hormone therapy. He says it increases the risk of heart disease. I think I recall you told another reader this is not true. Is my doctor right, or are you?

Dear Reader: You won’t be surprised to learn I think I’m right. But in the previous column you refer to, I didn’t say exactly what you remember. I said the effect of hormone therapy (HT) on heart disease depends on a woman’s age and how recently she entered menopause. In younger women, in their first six to 10 years after menopause, HT protects against heart disease. In contrast, in older women, HT increases the risk of heart disease. It’s called the “age effect.”

Hormone therapy usually involves a combination of both estrogens (the main female hormones) and progestins (other important female hormones). Estrogen helps reduce the symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes. Progestin reduces the risk of cancer of the uterus.

When we talk about the effect of HT on heart disease, we’re focusing on the most common type of heart disease: atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis causes cholesterol-filled “plaques” in the walls of the arteries that supply blood to the heart. As these plaques grow, they can block the flow of blood through the arteries. When blood flow to a part of the heart muscle stops, the muscle dies. That’s what happens in a heart attack.

A plaque has a cap made of fibers that hold in the plaque’s pool of cholesterol. In some plaques, called “vulnerable plaques,” inflammation inside the plaque eats away at the fibrous cap. Suddenly, the fibers rupture, cholesterol spills into the artery, a blood clot forms – and blood flow to a part of the heart stops.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff Estrogen slows the development of plaques. By the time a woman reaches menopause, her own natural estrogen has helped protect her against developing plaques. By 10 years after menopause, however, the average woman has vulnerable plaques that threaten to rupture. Estrogen increases inflammation inside the plaques and causes blood to clot more easily. So estrogen now increases the risk of heart attacks.

A study published in March 2016 in The New England Journal of Medicine supports what I’m saying. More than 600 women were divided into two groups: those fewer than six years past menopause (called the “early postmenopause” group) and those 10 years or more past menopause (the “late postmenopause” group). Each group was treated for up to seven years with either HT or a placebo.

In the early postmenopause group, HT slowed the development of atherosclerosis.

In the late postmenopause group, it did not.

Several other studies of a similar type have come to the same conclusion. Also, studies in animals – including monkeys, which are biologically similar to humans – conclude there is an “age effect.”

You are just three years into menopause. Unless you already have heart disease or have risk factors for heart disease, HT is more likely to protect you from heart disease than to put you at risk.

My grown son, Jeanne “Ryan,” recently Phillips told me he was molested by his late father when he was a young boy. I had no idea, but I believe him. Ryan is an only child and has recently started seeing a counselor.

I loved my husband very much and I believed he loved me, but I no longer know what to think or how to feel. If he were still alive, I most likely would leave him. But what do I do with more than 40 years of mostly good memories? When I think about my late husband now, I just feel numb. – Not A Clue In Indiana Dear Not A Clue: That your son didn’t tell you sooner, while you could have intervened, is regrettable. And that he is now seeing a counselor about it is laudable – you should give him all the love and support you can. I don’t blame you for having mixed emotions, but at this point it is too late for you to change anything. Hang onto the good memories and let them comfort you, because you can’t change history.

Dear Abby: I saw myself in the Jan. 15 letter from “Diana In San Diego,” the lifelong compulsive nail biter who wants to stop. I was diagnosed with trichotillomania (hair pulling and skin picking) three years ago, and it is closely related to nail biting. The trichotillomania learning center website, www.trich.org, is worth checking out for treatment options such as medications, behavioral therapy and support groups. – Erica In Massachusetts Dear Erica: Thank you for the information. I received a deluge of helpful, caring responses to Diana’s letter, and several readers mentioned trichotillomania in the more severe cases.

Buffing was mentioned as a way to smooth imperfections that could be “triggers.” A reader in Virginia added decorations to her nails – decals, stencils and rhinestones – that served as an impediment and cured her of the habit.

Other readers have used artificial (acrylic) nails as a way to allow their natural fingernails to grow out. James in Delaware helped his ashamed then-fiancée hide her bitten-off, stubby nails when showing off her engagement ring by suggesting she put on artificial ones. While she proudly showed off the ring to everyone, her own nails grew out beautifully and she never chewed them again.

Additional growing-out tips mentioned by readers were: coating the nails with a hardening solution, keeping the cuticles moist with petroleum jelly, cuticle cream – even lip balm. A reader reassured Diana there are “bad-tasting” products that successfully work as a deterrent.

Breaking off a corner of one of her front teeth stopped Pat in Texas. Others found addressing a vitamin deficiency did the trick for them. Wearing a tight rubber band around the wrist to snap when the urge hits can provide an incentive to stop. And from Sandi in San Francisco: “A teacher showed me an enlarged picture taken from a microscope of what was under fingernails. Now I don’t even think about biting.”

What should three hearts mean?

I treat it as a splinter bid, showing four- or five-card diamond support, a good hand and a singleton or void in hearts.

In two-over-one, the auction is one spade - one no-trump - two hearts - two no-trump - three diamonds (or three no-trump) - three no-trump - pass.

Against three no-trump, East knew from partner’s fourth-highest club-two lead that declarer had five clubs, but no shift looked sensible. So she won with her ace and returned the queen. South took that trick, drove out the diamond ace, and claimed 11 tricks.

PUBLIC NOTICE HOUSING AUTHORITY OF JOLIET DATE: July 5, 2016 PROJECT TITLE: Human Resource Service Provider DELIVERY DATE/TIME: July 29, 2016 - 1 :30p.m., Local Time The Housing Authority of Joliet requests sealed proposals from qualified Human Resource Service Provider, to provide assistance in organizational management, operating programs, and carrying out activities prescribed by law, executive order, OMB Circulars, OPM regulation, and department and agency policy and regulations. The primary programs are positions classification, recruitment, internal placement, training and development, employee relations, benefits and services, collecting and processing data and record keeping. The Human Resources office informs and helps employees regarding rights, benefits and procedures, while also advising and assisting managers, and supervisors to perform their responsibilities in managing their people.

Request for Proposal (RFP) Documents are available for pick up at the Housing Authority of Joliet administration building, located at 6 S. Broadway Street; Joliet, or by phoning John Chow, Chief of Development and Operations, at (815)727-0611, ext. 159.

Housing Authority of Joliet is seeking to encourage participation by respondents who are MBEIWBE or Section 3 business enterprises and has a goal for minimum MBEIWBE participation of at least 25% MBE and WBE participation.

Human Resource Service Provider will be evaluated according to criteria described within the RFP. This will ensure that appropriate standards of ability, experience, performance, and integrity will be met.

Proposals will be comparatively judged on the basis of, but not limited to, cost, organization of personnel, completion of work similar in scope, and performance and quality of work previously completed.

Proposals will be received at 6 South Broadway Street; Joliet, Illinois 60436 until 1:30p.m., local time, July 29, 2016.

By submitting a proposal, each offeror is affirming his/her commitment to comply with the Laws of the State of Illinois, governing Fair Employment Practices and with all rules and regulations of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, governing Equal Employment Opportunities and Non-discriminatory Practices.

The Housing Authority reserves the right to reject any or all Proposals or to waive any informality in the selection process.

Proposals should be prepared in accordance with the attached instructions and will be evaluated by the Housing Authority of Joliet Development Team, as described within the RFP under evaluation factors for award.
