Illinois Traction System – Morris Interurban railway systems were once a common form of transportation for many towns both large and small across America.

As a mode of transportation, the interurbans were a transition between the sole reliance on steam railroads to the later dependence on automobiles and trucks.

After Frank J. Sprague developed the right motor and delivery system in 1887, the major development of these new electric lines was in Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. The terrain of these areas, along with the great number of medium-sized rural towns that were fairly densely populated, proved to be ideally suited to interurban construction.

Electric interurban trains grew out of the city-based networks of electric streetcars, commonly known as trolleys. New transit companies nationwide began to electrify their lines with power supplied by electric motors pioneered by Sprague.

Because electrifying streetcar lines was expensive, a period of consolidation followed within the transit industry that often left a location market with only one or two competitors.

The Illinois Traction System, an interurban electric system that ran from Chicago to Princeton, was built in several stages. In 1902, the first segment was built from Ottawa through Spring Valley to Ladd. The section eastward from Ottawa to Marseilles was completed that same year. An extension was added eastward from Marseilles to Seneca in 1906, and the westward extension was completed from Marquette to Princeton the following year.

The Chicago, Ottawa & Peoria Railway began operations in 1904 and eventually connected Joliet and Princeton by 1912, when it joined at Joliet with the Chicago & Joliet Electric Railway. With this connection, it was now possible to make a trip from Princeton to Chicago.

In 1923, the entire system became part of the Illinois Traction System. The route remained in operation until 1934 when the system was abandoned.

The east and west walls of the Morris station contain six circular openings near the second floor roof line that were originally used for receiving cables of the transmission line. The Morris passenger station is one of two surviving examples of the standard station design used by the Illinois Traction system for its interurban service. COPS cyclists ride through area to honor fallen officers

Shaw Media correspondent MORRIS – With the recent deaths of law enforcement officials in Dallas, a group of bicyclists set out over the weekend to remind Illinois residents that officers are killed in the line of duty here, too.

The Illinois chapter of Concerns of Police Survivors, or COPS, on Saturday led a group of more than 50 cyclists and their support crews through Morris, Minooka and Joliet as they made their way across the state in a four-day journey in support of families of fallen law enforcement officers.

Sadly, the number of families that need that type of support expanded Sunday morning after three Baton Rouge law enforcement officers were killed in a shooting that left another three wounded. Louisiana’s governor said Sunday afternoon that one of the three wounded was “fighting for his life.”

At the Morris stop at the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 967, those gathered honored Michigan State Police Trooper Chad H. Wolf, who was 38 when he died Aug. 28, 2015, when a vehicle struck him on the road.

His parents, Lyle and Karen Wolf of Hooppole, Illinois, attended the ceremony.

“We miss Chad,” his mother told the cyclists. “Without you guys and this, we couldn’t do it on our own. ... Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

Her son was also a youth pastor, she said, and was one of the counselors at the 1999 shootings at Columbine High School in Colorado.

“He never met a stranger,” Karen Wolf said. “He had no enemies. He had people from all over the United States come to his funeral. All of those kids from Columbine came to his funeral.”

The COPS organization helped her and her husband deal with their son’s death, she said, and she thanked all those who participated in this year’s ride.

The 12th annual Illinois COPS Cycle Across Illinois is a charity bicycle ride that covered more than 340 miles this year, beginning at the Mississippi River in Alton on Thursday and ending Sunday at the McHenry County Sheriff’s office in Woodstock.

Shaw Media correspondent JOLIET – The engines roared Sunday as friends and family of Ron Oswald rode down the streets of Joliet on motorcycles and in cars for a memorial ride in honor of a friend, papa and father killed four years ago in a crash in Plainfield.

The ride began at Double J’s bar in Joliet, where about 50 people close to Oswald came to Ron Oswald share memories and discuss what comes next because of a May court decision. The court decision determined that the Palos Park man responsible for the crash that took Oswald’s life and injured another family would not serve time in prison.

“I am mad that he was sentenced to nine years, and then the judge went back on that, and now he received community service and probation,” ride coordinator Barb Fitzpatrick said. “Illinois laws need to be changed because they are too lenient.”

About 3 p.m. July 14, 2012, Andrew W. Henderson of Palos Park was high on heroin and Vicodin when he dropped a milk bottle that lodged under the brake pedal of his Dodge Durango, according to court records. He was unable to stop at County Line Road and Route 126, where he slammed into a Nissan Altima occupied by a family of four. He rear-ended that vehicle, which then went into the opposite lane, where Oswald rode his Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

The father and two children in the Altima had minor injuries, while the wife suffered a fractured hip and four broken ribs. Oswald was coherent after the crash, even though he suffered chest injuries, Fitzpatrick said. She said she was told that he asked about the family in the car before he was taken to a hospital by ambulance, where he later died.

Oswald was an active member of the Will County ABATE, A Brotherhood Aimed Toward Education, which promotes motorcycle safety and legislation to protect riders. At the time of the 2012 crash, he was on his way to meet Fitzpatrick and other riders for a soldier being deployed.

Remembering Ron

With the help of Joliet Police to escort and block traffic, Sunday’s ride continued to Woodlawn Memorial Park cemetery, where all gathered around his grave, which was placed near the road so friends and family could wave to Oswald as they rode past, according to his daughter, Diane McClimon.

“Be strong and courageous,” she read from Deuteronomy 31:6. “Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you or forsake you.”

After the readings and prayers, some of Oswald’s grandchildren gathered around their papa’s grave and sent balloons up to heaven.

The ride then, to trace Oswald’s last ride, traveled down Route 52, north on Ridge Road and then east on Route 126 to County Line Road where the crash occurred, and ended at the Tap House Grill in Plainfield.

McClimon said she and her family are upset because the nine-year sentence Henderson received in September 2014 by Judge Carla Alessio Policandriotes being changed in May. Henderson pleaded guilty in May 2014 to two counts of aggravated driving under the influence and was sentenced in September 2014 to nine years in prison – but Henderson was placed on probation until he completed a residential substance abuse program. He did spend two years and three months in jail before being released into drug treatment.

While going through treatment, Henderson spoke to various groups about the effects of heroin use and counseled others seeking treatment, according to his attorney. His completion of treatment required the judge to rule on a defense motion filed two years ago to

reconsider her original sentence.

The ruling in May means Henderson will spend no time in prison; he will remain on probation until September 2018.

“The victim here was extraordinary.

Mr. Henderson has [since] tried to be as extraordinary as he can with the tools he’s been given,” Alessio Policandriotes said at the May hearing.

Ron’s family, which said it intends to take further action in an attempt to get justice for Oswald, wants people to know that Henderson was on probation

at the time of the crash because he was involved in a traffic stop in Cook County in October 2011 where heroin was found in the center console of the vehicle, according to court transcripts provided by McClimon.

“The judge said you can’t set someone up for success and then pull the rug out from under them. I feel like the rug was pulled out from under us when justice wasn’t served,” McClimon said.

“My dad getting killed was not the worst part of this situation. The sentencing was the worst part.”

Bishop presides over St. Mary groundbreaking St. Mary Assumption Catholic Church in Coal City begins new addition Saturday

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – Members of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Roman Catholic Church in Coal City celebrated Saturday evening the groundbreaking on their new, nearly $4 million addition with Bishop Daniel Conlon in attendance.

“They have been trying to raise the money to restore and add on to the church for close to 30 years,” the Rev. Robert Noesen said of the parish. “For the past four years, they have seriously worked toward the fundraising goal.

The cornerstone on the church shows it was built in 1892.”

While the church is being renovated and the addition built, the 800 family member church will meet, starting July 30, across the street in Berst Hall for Mass.

Curtis Grove, head of the church’s Building and Finance Committee, said the congregation still needs more than $800,000 to pay for the building without

Along the way, several fallen officers whose families live in the state were honored. The cyclists were escorted by law enforcement agencies along the way. In Morris, there were vehicles from the Joliet Police Department, Sangamon Sheriff’s Department, McHenry Sheriff’s Department, Granite City Police Department and others.

“If we can’t raise enough funds, we’ll have to do a loan,” Grove said. “If you build it, they will pray.”

He said the church is moving forward, hoping the new building will also bring with it new parishioners.

Noesen said the church hopes to complete the building projects by Easter 2017.

“It’s construction, so the completion date is not for sure,” he said.

Ralph DeLuca, with DZA and Associates architecture firm working on the new church, said they have been working on the project for several years.

“The biggest challenge is to get the size and scale proportionate with the existing structure,” DeLuca said.

In a program handed out at the event, Noesen said it is important that the congregation raise as much money as possible prior to the completion.

“While our renovated and expanded church is going to be fully functional and very nice, we will not be able to do many of the decorative enhancements to the building at this time,” he wrote.

“While the financial support has been good, still more is needed to accomplish all the finishing touches we want for our new building.”

Grove said the committee will continue to actively fund raise as the work gets under way starting Aug. 1.

Three Joliet police officers – Sgt. John Stefanski, Patrick Blatti and Tony Lakota – rode this year. It was Stefanski’s sixth time. He was riding in particular for fallen Joliet police officers Jonathan Walsh, who died in 2004, and Officer Martin Murrin, who died in 1984.

“Law enforcement officers are taking a good beating lately,” Stefanski said. “These are tragic deaths. They are not natural causes.”

He said he felt for the families of the

officers in Dallas who were killed earlier this month.

“I sympathize with them,” he said, “as well as the families of officers who are killed anywhere in the country. It happens because we put ourselves at risk. We are targets.”

Crew member and Pana resident Terry McMillen lost his son, Illinois State Trooper Brian McMillen, in 2007 when his patrol car was involved in an crash with two cars driven by intoxicated drivers.

McMillen said this was the first year he hasn’t cycled with the event. He and his wife began the trips the year their son was killed.

“Years ago,” he said, “there was no support group of any kind. ... This bike ride got my wife over the hump. Ever since then, we’ve been doing the ride. ... It’s a healing process.

“There’s no time frame for healing.”

CAP Barbell looking to make wire fencing in Joliet

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – CAP Barbell has plans to add a manufacturing plant to its Joliet facility and double the size.

CAP is seeking property tax abatements from both Joliet and Will County before moving forward with the project.

CAP plans to manufacture wire fencing for home improvement stores, Joliet Economic Development Director Steve Jones said.

Jones presented the company’s request for a tax abatement Thursday to the Joliet City Council Economic Development Committee, which later recommended approval.

The abatement request is set to be brought Tuesday to the full City Council for a vote.

The company seeks a five-year abatement on 50 percent of the property taxes on the plant addition.

The city abatement would be worth $75,000 over five years to the company, Jones said.

Joliet D-86 partners with agencies to address mental health needs

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet Public Schools District 86 officials are partnering with local agencies to take a proactive approach in helping help students and families deal with mental health issues.

Those partnerships include the National Alliance on Mental Illness, which has a Will and Grundy County branch, the Crisis Line of Will and Grundy Counties and Linden Oaks Behavioral Health Services.

“It’s better to be proactive than reactive,” Tanisha Cannon, the district’s assistant superintendent for student services said. “The more partnerships we have to support students and families, the better off we are on the front end.”

NAMI staff visited District 86 last fall to work with the district’s staff on mental health issues, including what it’s like to live with a mental illness and how to support families who have it, Cannon said. When families or students have mental health challenges, they are referred by the district to NAMI. This fall, the Crisis Line of Will and Grundy Counties will do suicide prevention training for staff and parents, Cannon said. Later in July, Linden Oaks

will provide youth mental health first aid training to staff. Cannon said mental health issues do not come up a lot at the district, but there is a need. The district’s goal is to have resources available to meet students needs.

“It is manifesting in younger students,” Cannon said about mental health challenges. “As a result of that, there is a need to access the services that are available.”

There is also a need not just to support youths but adults who have these issues, she said. The district’s partnerships with local agencies is not just for students, but parents as well.

Addressing mental health needs is part of the district’s three-year strategic plan for student services.

In her presentation on her contribution to the plan, Cannon spoke of the partnerships to District 86 board inspectors at the June 8 meeting, where she said one challenge is making parents more aware of their children’s struggles with mental health issues, since many of them are not aware. The partnerships impressed board member Gwendolyn Ulmer at the meeting.

“They do great training in this community and have a big footprint,” she said about Crisis Line.

After Joliet won an appeal in the case last month, a city official said Aug. 1 was the target date by which Joliet would gain control of the apartment complex through a public-private corporation created to manage Evergreen Terrace.

But the president of the company that is the private partner said Friday that Aug. 1 is definitely too early.

“It will be sometime between now and the end of the year,” said Peter Holsten, president of Holsten Companies in Chicago.

“The game plan is once HUD and the city are ready to move forward, we will step in and manage the property as is,” he said.

The city is considering redevelopment of Evergreen Terrace, which could lead to a reduction in the 356 apartments that are there now. But that could not happen for some time, because funding would have to be arranged first, Holsten said.

“The sourcing of founds for the property is going to take probably a couple of years, so nothing is going to be done with the property in that time,” he said.

Joliet takeover date uncertain on Evergreen Terrace

In years past, the idea that a person was addicted to drugs, particularly heroin, might conjure up images of skid row bums and derelicts. That idea no longer is applicable in today’s world.

A study from Roosevelt University published in July 2015 analyzed the capacity of substance abuse treatment in Illinois. It reported a 100 percent increase in heroin use by women over an 11-year period. Men increased by 50 percent in the same time period, and those with household incomes over $50,000 increased by 60 percent. The study concluded that heroin use has increased significantly across most demographics. The increase in use parallels the increase in heroin-related overdose deaths, which increased 286 percent between 2002 and 2015.

Crystal Nero, organizer of Serenity Steps support group in Minooka, wants to break down the stigma associated with those suffering from addiction to

heroin or any other substance.

“If we continue to condemn individuals, they have no room to grow,” Nero said.

Nero began the support group two years ago when she still was in school.

She graduated a year ago as a professional counselor with a certification in drugs and alcohol. She works at Naperville Counseling Center and at Sheridan Correctional Center, while still continuing to organize Serenity Steps.

The Minooka group differs from others in that it’s not a 12-step program, she said. It’s an open meeting format where everybody is welcome. They meet the first and third Fridays of every

month for people who seek support and advice on either a family member or loved one who has a substance use disorder.

The group also is open to people who have a use disorder. Through speakers, topics and sometimes even movies on addiction, Nero and other members try to provide people with a look at what it means to have a loved one with an addiction and what recovery looks like.

It helps people to look at and change the dynamics of their situation so recovery has an opportunity to take place. “[It’s about] changing the dynamic and doing something different; what you are doing now is not working,” Nero said.

Starting with the Aug. 5 meeting, Serenity Steps will move from Healing Waters in Minooka to the small room of Minooka Village Hall’s Community Center.

As a girl, Virginia attended a oneroom schoolhouse in Streator – where she was the fastest runner – and moved to Joliet when she enrolled in the former St. Joseph School of Nursing on Broadway Street.

“If you had a specialty, you didn’t have to do the bedpans,” John said.

“Nurses did that back then.”

After graduating from nursing school in 1943, Virginia worked as a certified registered nurse anesthetist at Associated Anesthesiologists in Joliet, which served patients at both Silver Cross Hospital and what is now Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet.

Virginia eventually worked only at St. Joe’s “for moral reasons,” John said. Virginia was quietly devoted to her Catholic faith.

“She was a very prayerful, religious woman,” John said, “but she wasn’t flamboyant about it.”

After she retired, Virginia began volunteering at St. Joe’s pastoral care department and its women’s auxiliary. Virginia’s life was so busy, she wasn’t always available to babysit grandchildren.

“But she sure did love them, let me

tell you,” John said.

John said his mother always encouraged him and credits that encouragement with him attaining Eagle Scout. She was a phenomenal cook: Her specialty was a Scandinavian pot roast John can’t quite reproduce.

She enjoyed golf and bridge in her free time.

“When she died, her calendar was full,” John said. “She was booked through December.”

Virginia died May 14 at age 93.

John had one thought when the Senate recognized his mother’s commitment to her community.

“First thing I wanted to do was call her, but …” John’s voice trailed off.

If such recognition had occurred during Virginia’s lifetime, how might she have responded?

“I think she would have been humbled,” John said. “She would have said, ‘Oh, my gosh, why did you do that? Oh, for Pete’s sake.’ And she would have just blushed.”

JOLIET – After Virginia Garvey of Joliet died, her volunteer service was recognized in the state Senate in Springfield.

So said her son John Garvey, principal at St. Mary Immaculate Parish school in Plainfield. Yet he recalled the time in her life when his mother was so busy working as a nurse anesthetist and caring for John’s grandmother at home she didn’t have time to volunteer.

Like the time John was in grade school at St. Patrick School in Joliet and hoped his mother would attend the school’s mother’s club meetings.

“The classroom that had the most mothers that came to the mother’s club meeting would get to have a special statue of Mary in it,” John said.

“I always wanted my mom to come to the meetings so my classroom would get the statue of Mary.”

By the time John reached high school, his grandmother had died and his parents – Virginia and his father Joseph – sought other ways to serve.

Joseph sat on the parish council and

Virginia became involved in the church’s Council of Catholic Woman and its 55 club.

Both parents also volunteered for Joliet Area Community Hospice. As a nurse, Virginia understood and accepted death, John said, even when Joseph himself was terminally ill.

“I said, ‘Mom, aren’t you sad?’ ” John said.

Virginia “And she said, “ ‘It’s part of our lives, the fall Garvey of the year.’ ” Through the years, Virginia also volunteered for the Will-Grundy Medical Clinic. Additionally, she was a member of the Catholic Women’s League of Joliet, Ladies of the Elks Auxiliary, Joliet Hospitality Club and Women of the Moose.

In 2003, Virginia received the Joliet Diocese Woman of the Year for St. Patrick’s Parish, the Silver Eagle award from Rotary Club of Joliet, and the Joliet Area Community Hospice Health and Community Service Award from the United Way of Will County.

Danny attended Joliet public schools during his grade school and junior high years. He later would be a graduate of Joliet East High School.

Danny’s acceptance and love for Christ began at a very young age at Mt. Zion Full Gospel Tabernacle, Joliet, Illinois.

Danny was a lifetime resident of Joliet, where he was employed at Grundy Industries for over 14 years, and later retired from Joliet Public School Systems as an engineer in 2012.

After retirement, Danny enjoyed fishing and

family gatherings.

After battling a brief illness, Danny was entrusted into God’s care at Silver Cross Hospital with Joliet Hospice, family and friends at his bedside.

Danny is preceded in death by his wife, Doretha Thompson; his parents, Dewitt and Goldie Ann Thompson; one brother, Marcus Thompson; four aunts, Darlene, Mary, Tressa and Lorraine; four uncles, Clifford, Arlee, James and Edward.

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Wendell Anderson loved being Minnesota’s governor so much that he couldn’t wait to get to work in the morning.

But when he abandoned the Capitol in a slippery move to get to Washington, voters never forgave the youthful Democrat who just three years earlier won statewide accolades for embodying Minnesota’s strengths on an iconic Time magazine cover.

Anderson, a handsome Olympic silver medalist in hockey, gave up the job he loved in 1976, resigning so that second-in-command Rudy Perpich could become governor and name him to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by newly elected Vice President Walter Mondale.

The move was deeply unpopular, and voters decisively ousted Anderson two years later in favor of Republican Rudy Boschwitz.

Anderson, who died Sunday at 83, was never elected again, although friends said he longed to return to

Anderson’s family issued a statement, calling the former governor many things: “A kid from East St. Paul. A Gopher. An Olympian. An elected public servant of the highest order. But above all else he was a Minnesotan. His love for the state and its citizens was second only to his love for his family.”

The next year, he pushed through an overhaul of school aid and taxes that became known as the “Minnesota miracle.”

Top Ill. Republicans to be no-shows in Cleveland

SPRINGFIELD – When the Republican Party launches its quadrennial celebration in Cleveland this week to anoint its nominee for president, some prominent party faithful from Illinois won’t be there.

First-term U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk is upfront with his reason – he doesn’t like the presumptive nominee, businessman Donald Trump, calling him “too bigoted and racist” for the job.

But other top leaders, including Gov. Bruce Rauner, are joining Republicans from around the country in ditching the convention without saying why. Many face tough re-election races in November and are trying to distance themselves from the contentious name at the top of the ticket.

“I will be traveling the state of Illinois, meeting with community leaders, business leaders and some legislators and signing some of the most important legislation that got passed this spring,” Rauner said last week after declining to answer reporters’ questions about the convention or the presidential race, in general.

Precautions by police in Chicago after Baton Rouge shootings

CHICAGO – The Chicago Police Department responded to the shooting deaths of three law enforcement officers in Louisiana by continuing requiring officers to ride in pairs and in uniform as they’ve been doing since the slayings of five officers in Dallas.

Department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said officers were notified about Sunday morning’s shooting in Baton Rouge, but that there’s no known threat to police in Chicago.

The shooting, which left three officers dead and three others injured in Baton Rouge, came less than two weeks after a black man was shot and killed by police in that city. On July 7,

Midwest storms to precede sweltering heat wave

CHICAGO – Weekend thunderstorms and at least two tornadoes that rolled through the Midwest are expected to give way to a blistering hot and sticky week.

Temperatures in Chicago and stretching into Iowa, Missouri and Kansas and up into Wisconsin are expected to reach 90 degrees by Thursday or Friday, with the same story – though perhaps a bit warmer – anticipated in Minnesota. Chicago police officer saves boy from drowning

ORLAND PARK – A suburban fire department is crediting an off-duty Chicago police officer with saving the life of a boy who was pulled from the bottom of a swimming pool.

The Orland Fire Protection District said in a news release it was the quick lifesaving actions of Cindy Guerra that saved the

committee member. Two former party chairmen are delegates, along with sitting state legislators who are delegates or alternates.

Many who won’t make the trip clearly have their eyes on November.

Kirk, who faces a popular Democratic congresswoman, Tammy Duckworth, announced last month that he wouldn’t support Trump, saying he doesn’t have the proper presidential temperament.

Report: Chicago’s new schools add to race, class woes

CHICAGO – Under Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Chicago Public Schools has spent millions on new schools and pricey additions while putting little effort into creating more racially and socioeconomically diverse schools.

Documents obtained by WBEZFM show that Emanuel plans to continue this pattern, using revenue from a record property

tax hike passed last year.

Over the past six years, the school district has spent $320 million on new school construction. It’s planning to spend another $330 million.

Emanuel justifies this spending because the schools are short on space and overflowing with students. But there’s been little attempt to try to get white, middle- and upper-middle-class students at these schools to instead attend one of the more than 300 Chicago schools that are deemed underused, even when those schools are close in proximity. Most of the underused schools serve poor, black and Latino students.

Richard Kahlenberg, an expert on economic integration who works for the bipartisan think tank The Century Foundation, said the result is that the underused schools are kept economically and racially isolated, which is not only expensive, but bad for children.

CLEVELAND – Dissident delegates making a last-gasp attempt to prevent Donald Trump’s nomination at the GOP National Convention said they will try forcing a state-by-state vote on the rules governing the gathering when it opens Monday.

But even if the rebels can get such a roll call to occur, it’s one they seem likely to lose.

“What will happen on the floor, if there’s any attempt, is the party and Trump are going to rise against it,” Paul Manafort, Trump’s campaign chairman, told reporters Sunday.

The convention’s rules committee decisively defeated the dissidents seeking to make the changes late last week, thanks to an alliance between the Trump campaign and RNC leaders on that panel. Manafort said there was no longer a viable “stop Trump” movement.

Concern over crackdown after failed Turkey coup

ISTANBUL – After a failed coup against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the government moved swiftly Sunday to shore up his power and remove those perceived as an enemy, saying it has detained 6,000 people.

The crackdown targeted not only generals and soldiers, but a wide swath of the judiciary that sometimes has blocked Erdogan, raising concerns the effort to

oust him will push Turkey even further into authoritarian rule.

Friday night’s uprising by a faction of the military appeared to take the government – and much of the world – by surprise.

The plotters sent warplanes firing on key government installations and tanks rolling into major cities, but it ended hours later when loyal government forces regained control of the military, and civilians took to the streets in support of Erdogan. At least 294 people were killed and more than 1,400 wounded, the government said.

N.H. city cops use Pokemon Go to lure fugitives

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Police in New Hampshire’s largest city have gotten the Pokemon Go bug, trying to lure fugitives with the popular app.

A post on the Manchester Police Department Facebook page announces that police recently detected one of the more rare Pokemon characters – a Charizard – in the booking area. The post invites those whose names appear on a list linked to the post to be “one of the lucky ones” to come capture the Charizard.

The list includes the names of the more than 500 fugitives on the department’s wanted persons roundup.

Sgt. Eric Knight said Sunday the post has yet to net an arrest. But it’s been popular with its Facebook followers.

Former Marine kills 3 police officers in Baton Rouge, wounds 3 others

BATON ROUGE, La. – A former Marine dressed in black and carrying extra ammunition shot and killed three Baton Rouge law enforcement officers Sunday, less than two weeks after a black man was fatally shot by police here in a confrontation that sparked nightly protests that reverberated nationwide.

Three other officers were wounded, one critically. Police said the gunman was killed at the scene.

The shooting – less than a mile from police headquarters – added to the tensions across the country between the black community and police. Just days earlier, one of the slain officers had posted an emotional Facebook message about the challenges of police work in the current environment.

President Barack Obama urged Americans to tamp down inflammatory words and actions.

“We don’t need careless accusations thrown around to score political points or to advance an agenda. We need to temper our words and open our hearts ... all of us,” Obama said.

The gunman was identified as Gavin Long of Kansas City, who turned 29 on Sunday.

Long, who was black, served in the Marines from 2005 to 2010, reaching the rank of sergeant. He deployed to Iraq from June 2008 to January 2009, according to military records.

Although he was believed to be the only person who fired at officers, authorities said they were unsure if he had some kind of help.

“We are not ready to say he acted alone,” state police spokesman Major Doug Cain said.

Two “persons of interest” were detained for questioning in the nearby town of Addis.

They later were released without any charges being filed. Cain said authorities planned to continue investigating whether the gunman got any assistance – “indirectly, directly here or at home.”

While in the military, Long was awarded several medals, including one for good conduct, and received an honorable discharge. His occupational expertise was listed as “data network specialist.”

It was the fourth high-profile deadly encounter in the U.S. involving police over the past two weeks. In all, the violence has cost the lives of eight officers, including those in Baton Rouge, and two civilians and sparked a national debate over race and policing.

Authorities initially believed that additional assailants might be at large, but hours later said there were no other active shooters.

The shooting began at a gas station on Airline Highway. According to radio traffic, Baton Rouge police answered a report of a man with an assault rifle and were met by gunfire.

For several long minutes, they did not know where it was coming from.

The radio exchanges were made public Sunday by the website Broadcastify.

Nearly 2½ minutes after the first report of an officer getting shot, an officer on the scene is heard saying police do not know the shooter’s location.

Almost six minutes pass after the first shots are reported before police say they have determined the shooter’s location. About 30 seconds later, someone says shots still are being fired.

The recording lasts about 17 minutes and includes urgent calls for an armored personnel carrier called a BearCat. Of the two officers who survived the shooting, one was hospitalized in critical condition, and the other was in fair condition. Another officer was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, hospital officials said.

Two of the slain officers were from the Baton Rouge Police Department: 32-year-old Montrell Jackson, who had been on the force for a decade, and 41-year-old Matthew Gerald, who had been there for less than a year.

The third fatality was Brad Garafola, 45 and a 24-year veteran of the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office.

Jackson, who was black, posted his message on Facebook on July 8, just three days after the death of 37-year-old Alton Sterling, a black man killed by white Baton Rouge officers after a scuffle at a convenience store.

In the message, Jackson said he was physically and emotionally tired and complained that while in uniform, he gets nasty looks.

When he’s out of uniform, he said, some people consider him a threat.

Black and a cop: ‘We’ve all got work to do’

DALLAS – In the aftermath of the deadly attack on Dallas officers, the city’s police chief issued an appeal to blacks: If you want to change law enforcement, join us. Apply to become a cop.

Chelsea Whitaker heeded that call nearly a decade ago, long before the fatal police shootings in Ferguson, Missouri, and North Charleston, South Carolina, and elsewhere that energized the Black Lives Matter movement.

Now she finds herself living in two worlds.

Whitaker is a police officer who has been cursed at and attacked while making an arrest. She’s also a black woman who has faced the indignity of being asked if she belongs where she is, even while using the city’s gas pumps to fill up her department-issued vehicle.

In this era of distrust between blacks and police, Whitaker believes she has an opportunity to help bridge the divide.

“We’re all dominated by fears and our prejudices. We’ve got to do better,” she said. “We can’t just jump to ‘What this white person did is racist’ or ‘What this black person did is criminal.’ ” In the days after the sniper slayings, Police Chief David Brown urged blacks to leave the protests and join the department to work for change from within.

Like most U.S. cities, the Dallas department has struggled to diversify its ranks. While the city is composed mostly of blacks and Hispanics, the police force still is dominated by whites, which make up about half of the department.

The rest of the force is 26 percent black and 20 percent Hispanic. The city is about 28 percent white, 25 percent black and 42 percent Hispanic.

The police chief, a black man who rose through the ranks during a three-decade career, challenged protesters to be part of the solution.

“Serve your community. Don’t be a part of the problem,” he said. “We’re hiring. Get off of that protest line and put your application in.”

Whitaker, who turns 34 next week, is well known in Texas. A former point guard on the Baylor University squad that won the 2005 NCAA championship, she later played professionally in Israel and Turkey before returning to Texas and joining the department.

She’s now a detective in the criminal intelligence unit and attends law school. She comes from a family of public servants: Her brother and father work for the fire department. Her

mother is a retired probation officer.

Since becoming an officer in 2007, she has seen both ends of the spectrum. Many blacks who distrust officers based on years of harassment and excessive force are quick to view every police interaction as racist. Many white officers are fearful that crime or danger is just one stop away.

She has found herself in the middle, trying to explain to black people that she and fellow officers aren’t all out to get them and insisting to white colleagues that many blacks, including herself, are stopped for no apparent reason and challenged about their activities.

When she first started patrolling, she was infuriated by people hurting each other, committing crimes or cursing her out when she was arresting them. She was trying to help, trying to take bad guys off the streets, and she was getting grief for doing her job.

“I let it consume me. I hated it,” she said.

But she started to think more about the circumstances that lead someone into a life of crime. She began to focus on the things she could do to be a mentor: talking regularly to a guy she had arrested and is now in jail, buying a meal for a girl who had been molested, bringing a teenager to Wal-Mart to get her personal hygiene products and teach her how to care for herself.

Her chief lamented the myriad of society’s ills that police are asked to handle – from loose dogs to single-parent households. All for about $44,000 a year.

As much as possible, Whitaker tries to explain that police are human, too, and if they might be a bit rude or brusque, it’s not necessarily because of racism.

On the flip side, she tries to explain to white colleagues why blacks might be distrustful or fearful when encountering an officer. The long history of police targeting blacks for violence – and going unpunished – can’t be easily

dismissed.

As a detective, she doesn’t wear a uniform. When she goes to the city gas pumps, she has been questioned about where she works.

“Does he know that I work here?

Yeah, he sees me using my ID to get (gas), and they still feel the need to ask me. And that happens more than once,” she said.

When she asks white co-workers how they might feel in the same situation, they say they would “absolutely lose it.”

“It takes courage for all of us to meet in the middle, and that’s hard to do.”

“Well, you don’t experience that,” she said.

Americans’ opinions about policing are sharply divided along racial lines.

In a nationwide poll last summer by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs, 81 percent of black Americans said police are too quick to use deadly force, compared with 33 percent of whites. A third of blacks said they trust police to work in the best interest of the community, less than half the percentage of whites.

Whitaker has taken to Facebook to talk about police shootings, violence and race relations in lengthy posts that expand upon law and emotion.

Her page now has more than 1,300 followers. Her mission is to be a messenger of peace.

“It takes courage for all of us to meet in the middle, and that’s hard to do,” she said. “Perception is everything.”

Florence uses 5-run 8th to rally past Slammers

cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – After winning their first two games of a weekend series against Florence, the Joliet Slammers were looking for the sweep and put themselves in a good position after grabbing a 6-5 advantage with two innings remaining Sunday.

But the Freedom erupted for five

runs in the eighth inning and added one more in the ninth to rally for an 11-6 Frontier League victory over the Slammers at Silver Cross Field.

Despite the defeat, the Slammers (30-24) maintained their two-game lead in the East Division over Washington, which lost, 11-7, to West Division leader Southern Illinois, which starts a three-game series with Joliet on Tuesday at Silver Cross Field.

“We’ll take a series win any time,” Joliet manager Jeff Isom said. “But that was kind of a tough one, especially late in the game when we had a lead and then we ended up giving it up. The bullpen has got to come in and do a better job of putting some shut-down innings in, and that’s kind of been our Achilles’ heel all season long. We’ve got to do a better job on the pitching side of getting 1-2-3 innings, especially

late in games.

“The way that I look at it, momentum was out there on both sides. We ended up taking the lead and momentum was on our side. But when you end up giving up some baserunners, especially on 0-2 base hits, anything can happen. We just have to do a much better job of pitching late in the game.”

Now the Slammers can set their sights on the league’s top team, Southern Illinois, which improved to 37-17 and leads the West Division by 5.5 games over Evansville.

“We haven’t seen them, but I’ve heard that they do a lot of things very well,” Isom said. “They pitch well and are on top in hitting, as well. They’re right there with us in runs scored at the top, so we expect that it’s going to be a very competitive series. We’re looking forward to the matchup and seeing what they have.”

Baseball fans in this area have heard for years now about the underrated White Sox left-hander, Jose Quintana.

In his case, the underrated label comes largely from pitching well so many times, yet not getting rewarded with victories. Instead, he is king of the no-decision.

The National League’s underrated equivalent of Quintana in 2016 may be Wilmington graduate Tanner Roark, who without much fanfare is pitching consistently well for the Washington Nationals, a team with a rotation led by Stephen Strasburg and Max Scherzer.

Roark pitched eight shutout innings Saturday night, leaving after allowing the first two runners to reach in the ninth, as the Nationals blanked the Pittsburgh Pirates, 6-0.

He yielded five hits, walked one and struck five. For good measure, he singled in a run.

For the season, the right-hander is 9-5 with a 2.82 ERA. In 1242/3 innings, he has allowed 110 hits and 36 walks while striking out 106.

The innings pitched, through Saturday, were fourth in the National League behind three of the best – Madison Baumgarner, Johnny Cueto and Scherzer. Roark has thrown at least seven innings in five straight

CHICAGO – Cole Hamels pitched eight dominant innings in his first game at Wrigley Field since throwing a no-hitter at the famed ballpark a year ago, and the Texas Rangers stopped a four-game slide by topping the Cubs, 4-1, Sunday.

Hamels (10-2) struck out his first six batters. He fanned seven overall and gave up just an unearned run on four hits.

Last summer, the lefty threw a no-hitter and struck out 13 at Wrigley in his final start for Philadelphia.

He was then traded to the Rangers.

Sam Dyson struck out three in the ninth for his 19th save in 21 chances.

Ian Desmond homered and Robinson Chirinos drove in two runs as Texas avoided a three-game sweep in the matchup of division leaders. The Cubs had won three in a row.

Pujols’ 2 HRs power Angels past Sox for sweep

ANAHEIM, Calif. – Albert Pujols hit a pair of two-run homers, Jered Weaver pitched seven strong innings and the Los Angeles Angels completed an emphatic three-game sweep of the White Sox with an 8-1 victory Sunday.

Pujols connected in the first and fourth innings of his 53rd multi-homer game. He has 577 career homers as he pursues Mark McGwire (583) for 10th place on baseball’s career list.

Five Angels drove in a run while lighting up Jacob Turner (0-1) over the first five innings. He yielded seven hits and eight runs in his debut for the Sox, who have lost four straight.

After their worst first half since 1992, the injury-plagued Halos (4052) returned with three outstanding starts while outscoring the Sox 16-1.

Los Angeles has won seven of nine overall.

Omar Narvaez got his first bigleague hit and scored the Sox’s first run since July 9 on Adam Eaton’s double in the third inning. The run ended a 34-inning scoreless streak for the

Mumme leads Crest Hill past St. Joe’s SUBMITTED REPORTS CREST HILL – Michael Mumme’s dream game powered the Crest Hill Pony (13-14) All-Stars to a 15-9 victory over St. Joe’s on Saturday night in the Crest Hill Region Tournament.

Mumme clubbed two home runs, one a grand slam, and also singled and doubled while driving in six runs.

Matt Toth doubled and winning pitcher Cody Kundrith doubled and tripled.

Crest Hill was scheduled to play Oak Park on Sunday evening. An Oak Park victory would force a second game between the two teams. Crest Hill needs one victory to advance to the Zone tournament beginning July 28 at Bay City, Michigan. Crest Hill also is hosting a Bronco (11-12) Region Tournament, and Chicago AFCA is dominating. Campbell feels at home back with the Hawks Returning veteran has lived for years in Western Springs

mlazerus@suntimes.com CHICAGO – Brian Campbell tried to be magnanimous, tried to say all the right things about how the Florida Panthers were on the rise, and about how it was a good young room, and about how he’ll miss some of his former teammates.

But then the truth spilled out.

“I’m not going to miss it that much, to Brian be honest with you,” Campbell Campbell said of South Florida. “I’m excited where I am.”

Where he is, is back home in Chicago – the city in which he won a Stanley Cup, the city in which he met his wife,

the city in which he put down roots, returning every summer after every season in Florida.

And as excited as Campbell is to be back, his teammates seem even more thrilled.

“What an amazing pickup,” Patrick Kane said.

“It’s awesome; it’s great,” Brent Seabrook said.

“I got real happy when I saw that on the news,” Niklas Hjalmarsson said.

While the gaping holes up front left by departed forwards Andrew Shaw, Andrew Ladd and Teuvo Teravainen loomed large as the Blackhawks gathered for their annual fan convention Friday at the Hilton Chicago, it was the return of Campbell that drew the most attention. The affable defenseman has kept in touch with many of his old teammates, and fell easily back into old habits Friday, chatting up longtime pals such as Duncan Keith and Seabrook.

At 37, Campbell is still an elite skater and puck mover, a reliable defender, a savvy veteran who can play either side, and a guy whom coach Joel Quenneville said seems to get better with

age. He led all NHL defensemen last season with a plus-31 rating.

And he fills the Hawks’ most glaring need after a disappointing firstround playoff exit. Suddenly, the defensive corps, which leaned heavily on three rookies last season, might be the Hawks’ strongest unit. And whether Campbell is reunited with former partner Hjalmarsson, or more likely slotted alongside Seabrook on the second pairing, the Hawks hope he makes the difference.

“I think we’re deeper than we’ve been in a long time,” Hjalmarsson said.

“Soupy, he’s a veteran, he knows what it takes, and he’s won before. Then (Czech import Michal) Kempny’s going to be fun, to see how he plays. … I think we have a lot of excitement on the back end there. Hopefully the forwards can do their job.”

Campbell never made a secret of his desire to return to Chicago. He, his wife, and their two young daughters have lived in Western Springs for years now, and after toiling in relative anonymity in Florida, he gladly took significantly less money – $2.25 million for one year in Chicago, despite being offered a reported $4.75 million to

stay with the Panthers – to rejoin the Hawks.

“He’s been playing extremely well in Florida, and when you play on a team like that, it’s tough to get a lot of good credit, compared to playing on a team like Chicago or Montreal or whatever,” Hjalmarsson said. “He’s been under the radar.”

Campbell only spent three seasons with the Hawks, after playing parts of eight seasons in Buffalo and before playing five in Florida. But he said the city and the organization stuck with him. When he won the Cup in 2010, he was living downtown, just another transient hockey mercenary. Now he sees himself as a full-blown Chicagoan.

And although it’s debatable whether the Hawks or the Panthers – the latter coming off a division title – are closer to winning a championship, there’s no question where Campbell would rather pursue one.

And Campbell’s presence at the very least improves the Hawks’ chances.

“It would definitely be a lot better (to win again)” Campbell said. “It was great, obviously, but now that this is my community and my home, it’s stuff that you dream of.”

It appears only two players on the Bears’ offensive line will start at the same positions where they ended 2015: Charles Leno and Hroniss Grasu at left tackle and center, respectively. Kyle Long has moved back to right guard, the Bears signed Bobby Massie to play right tackle and there will be a competition to start at left guard.

Coach John Fox, offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains and offensive line coach Dave Magazu have a vision for this group and we’ll watch it continue to form in Bourbonnais.

Three things to watch on the offensive line in training camp: Larsen vs. Whitehair: Even though he’s changing positions, again, the Bears have to feel comfortable with three-time Pro Bowler Long, so the focus in camp will be on the four other positions. The only clear competition for a starting job on offense is at left guard between former Cardinal Ted Larsen and second-round pick

Bears want on their offensive line, which is why they drafted him, not to mention the smarts for the center position. He’ll be counted on to be the anchor next to a new starter at left guard, and his progression will be monitored closely in training camp, especially when the pads go on and he has to go up against Eddie Goldman and others during practice.

The bookends: The Bears are not without questions at both tackle positions. The staff has put a lot of confidence in Leno to keep improving at left tackle, and he wants to prove them right, but how will he handle edge rushers who have a year of tape to study? Then there’s Massie, the new right tackle who signed a three-year, $18 million contract. Massie is known better for his pass blocking than run blocking, but makes the line better by allowing Long to go back to guard. The other thing to watch at tackle in camp is the battle to be the top backups between Nick Becton, Nate Chandler, Jason Weaver and undrafted rookie John Kling.

Stenson wins duel with Mickelson to claim British Open

TROON, Scotland – Henrik Stenson is the champion golfer of the year, thanks to a final round for the ages.

He kept hitting the best shots of his life, one after another, and he needed each one to stay ahead of Phil Mickelson in a British Open duel that ranked among the best in major championship history.

Stenson made 10 birdies, including a 50-foot putt across the 15th green that had him pumping his fist in a rare show of emotion Sunday.

The final stroke in this masterpiece was a 20-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole that curled into the cup on the final turn. It gave him an 8-under 63, tying Johnny Miller at Oakmont for the greatest closing round by a major champion, and Stenson didn’t even realize it until he sat down to sign his card.

Records didn’t matter. This was about winning his first major.

“Right now I’m running on adrenaline. But there will be some point when I’ll struggle to make it up the stairs when I get back to the house,” Stenson said after four hours of an epic battle between two 40-somethings at Royal Troon.

Mickelson was a runner-up for the 11th time in a major, but never like this.

He can’t look back at a mistake because he really didn’t make any. He opened with a 63, closed with a career-best 65, shot the second-best score in Open history and was 11 shots better than everyone in the field.

Except one.

“It’s probably the best I’ve played and not won,” Mickelson said. “I think that’s probably why it’s disappointing in that I don’t have a point where I can look back and say, ‘I should have done that or had I only done this.’ I played a bogey-free round of 65 on the final round of a major. Usually, that’s good enough to do it, and I got beat. I got beat by 10 birdies.”

He got beat by arguably the best final round in 156 years of major championships.

Miller also made 10 birdies in his final round of the 1973 U.S. Open, and then waited to see if anyone could catch him. Stenson started the final round with a one-shot lead over Mickelson, and knew it would be a two-man race from the opening hole when Mickelson nearly holed out from the fairway.

He answered that great shot with one of his own, finally pulling away with birdies on the 14th and 15th holes, and then a third in a row after Mickelson drilled a 3-wood onto the green at the par-5 16th and came within a frac-

The last birdie was for the record book.

Stenson finished at 264, breaking by one shot the 72-hole scoring record in the majors that David Toms set in the 2001 PGA Championship at Atlanta Athletic Club. His 20-under par matched Jason Day’s record for lowest under par at last year’s PGA Championship.

His biggest challenge was 46-year-old Mickelson, who has won five majors.

“I knew he wasn’t going to back down at any point, and in a way that makes it easier for myself,” Stenson said. “I knew I had to keep on pushing, keep on giving myself birdie chances.

He wasn’t going to give it to me, so I had to pull away. I’m just delighted I managed to do that with a couple of birdies at the right time.”

This was heavyweight material, reminiscent of the “Duel in the Sun” just down the Ayrshire coastline at Turnberry in 1977, when Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus battled to the final hole, and no one else was closer than 10 shots.

Stenson and Mickelson were never separated by more than two shots over 40 straight holes until the Swede’s final birdie. In the final round, they combined to make 14 birdies and an eagle. If this was a better-ball match, they would have shot 59.

“I’ve always thought that he is one of the best ball-strikers in the game and that major championships are perfectly suited for him,” Mickelson said. “I knew that he would ultimately come through and win. I’m happy that he did.

I’m disappointed that it was at my ex-

pense.”

J.B. Holmes won the B-Flight. He finished third, 14 shots behind.

The Swede won his first major in his 42nd attempt, becoming only the ninth player to capture his first major after turning 40. Beyond the score, the measure of his performance was that he putted for a birdie on every hole Sunday in a mild wind off the Irish Sea. Stenson three-putted for bogey from just off the first green, and he three-putted on No. 11 to fall back into a tie for the lead.

They matched pars on only six of the 18 holes.

Stenson became only the fourth player to win the British Open with all four rounds in the 60s, joining Tiger Woods, Nick Price and Greg Norman. He also ended a streak of six American winners at Royal Troon that dated to 1950.

He gave Sweden a long-awaited major in men’s golf, 19 years after Jesper Parnevik lost a 54-hole lead at Royal Troon. Stenson said Parnevik send him a message that said, “Go out and finish what I didn’t manage to finish.”

“I’m really proud to have done that, and it’s going to be massive for golf in Sweden with this win,” Stenson said.

Maybe he can take that silver jug down to Rio in his search of Olympic gold.

Golf’s top four players have withdrawn from the Olympics , but the Rio Games will have at least two of this year’s major champions – Stenson and Masters winner Danny Willett of England.

There’s one more major to play before Rio. Take a breath, Henrik. The PGA Championship starts a week from Thursday.

TORONTO – Will Power used pit strategy to grab his third victory of the season and close in on Team Penske teammate Simon Pagenaud in the race for the IndyCar championship.

Power’s victory Sunday on the temporary road course at Exhibition Place was his third in four races, and he was second last week at Iowa. He has closed

the gap on Pagenaud to 47 points in the standings, and the two are tied for the most wins in IndyCar this season.

He noted that Scott Dixon grabbed the IndyCar title away from teammate Juan Pablo Montoya last year with a strong late surge all the way through Sonoma.

Power pitted on Lap 57 of 85 for his final stop of the race and moments later, defending race

winner Josef Newgarden crashed when he ran over the curb in Turn 5. It brought out a caution and ruined the race for pole-sitter Dixon, who had dominated up to that point.

Because Dixon – along with Pagenaud and five others – had yet to pit, they were behind Power and stuck in traffic when they did make their stop.

LOUDON, N.H. – Matt Kenseth was always near the front of the pack. He stalked the leaders and waited for contenders to wilt.

Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr. faded down the stretch. So did Denny Hamlin.

It almost seemed like a repeat scenario for Kenseth.

Just as he did last fall on the same track where Kevin Harvick’s lead evaporated when he ran out of fuel, Kenseth pounced.

He pulled away down the stretch to win the Sprint Cup race Sunday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

Truex and Busch each led more than 120 laps before faltering over the final 75 laps, paving the way for Kenseth to win for the second time this season.

Kenseth also won the New Hampshire race last September.

He has 38th career victories.

“Last fall, we squeaked one out, a little more fuel than Kevin and a little different strategy, but not quite as good a car,” Kenseth said. “Today, I felt like we had the best car.”

NASCAR said Kenseth’s No.

20 Toyota failed the post-race laser inspection station and will be brought to the research and development center in Concord, North Carolina, for more evaluation. The penalty for that kind of failure has traditionally been a 15-point penalty. But this was the first time a race winner was busted since the lasers were instituted in 2013.

Tony Stewart finished second and strengthened his spot inside the top 30 in the points standings.

Stewart has a win this season and needs to secure a spot in the top 30 in points to clinch a spot in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship. He inched from 30th to 28th in points.

Joey Logano was third, followed by Harvick and Greg Biffle.

Alex Bowman had a solid day ruined when he hit the wall late and finished 26th driving for Dale Earnhardt Jr. Earnhardt was sidelined because he suffered from symptoms of a concussion.

Truex tumbled to 16th when his Toyota suffered a broken shifter and Busch dropped to eighth when he could never break free on late-race restarts.

• You’ve indicated your daughter has a negative body image: She thinks she’s fat, even though she’s thin. Is that affecting how she lives her life? For example, is she reluctant to go swimming with friends because she is afraid to wear a swimsuit in public?

Dear Dr. K: I’m worried about my 15-year-old daughter. She eats like a bird.

She is very thin, but thinks she is fat.

I’d like to think this is just a phase some teenagers go through, but could she have anorexia nervosa?

Dear Reader: As with most illnesses, there is not a magic dividing line between having anorexia and not. In fact, there’s a big gray zone where people don’t meet the criteria for a disease, yet they’re not normal, either. An example is “pre-diabetes.”

Tens of millions of people in the United States have blood sugar levels that are not high enough to be called diabetes, but also aren’t normal. It’s important to recognize them, because such people have a higher risk for developing diabetes in the future.

It’s the same with anorexia. People in the middle may meet some criteria for anorexia. They don’t have an officially recognized eating disorder, yet they don’t have a healthy relationship with food, either. Many of these people have what a Harvard Medical School colleague calls “almost anorexia.” It sounds as though your daughter may fit this description.

My colleague Dr. Jennifer Thomas, with Jenni Schaefer, has written an informative book on this topic called “Almost Anorexic: Is My (Or My Loved One’s) Relationship With Food a Problem?”

What causes anorexia? We don’t know.

Some psychiatrists have considered it a psychiatric disorder, strongly influenced by social pressures that equate beauty with thinness. I suspect it is predominantly a disorder of brain chemistry.

Could this just be a “phase” in your daughter’s turbulent teenage life? It’s common for teens to worry about their weight and appearance. But consider the following red flags that increase the likeli-

DEAR ABBY With summer here, many Jeanne families will do Phillips at least some traveling, which involves spending significant amounts of time in the family car or truck. I’d like to remind your readers it is now illegal in many states to leave a child, a disabled person or a pet unattended in a vehicle for any length of time. The reason is temperatures inside a vehicle – especially with the windows rolled up – can rise to dangerous, even deadly, levels very quickly.

Tests by the National Weather Service have shown when it’s 80 degrees F. outside, the interior of a vehicle with the windows rolled up, or just cracked open, can reach 123 degrees F. within 60 minutes. Such temperatures can induce heat exhaustion, or worse, heat stroke, within a very short time, and quickly kill a child, a pet or a disabled person.

Abby, I urge you in the strongest terms to help spread this vital warning and prevent needless tragedies of this kind. I was shocked when I read a report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration stating an average of 38 children have died in hot cars each year since 1998. More than 70 percent of those deaths were children younger than 2 years of age. How tragic.

Dear Abby: My family recently moved to a new state and was blessed to find a wonderful new church to attend near our home. There’s only one drawback. We have a young toddler, so we sit in the cry room during Mass. At our previous church, the cry room was a place for us to practice church etiquette with our son so we someday could sit with the rest of the congregation without disturbing the Mass.

The culture at this church is different; the cry room seems more like a playroom. Seeing all the other children running around makes keeping my toddler sitting in the pew nearly impossible (think major meltdowns). If we allow him to play with the other children, we spend the Mass feeling like we’ve failed as Christian parents. The result is neither my husband nor I has felt fully present at a Mass in months. In three no-trump, South started with seven top tricks: two hearts and five diamonds. He led the club king at trick two, intent on establishing two winners there. East played low, so South continued with the club queen. When East took that trick, he had no good play. Eventually, South won 10 tricks.
