JOLIET TOWNSHIP – A man was shot in the head before his body was placed in the trunk of a car that was set ablaze early Thursday.

Will County Sheriff’s Police and East Joliet Firefighters were called at 12:04 a.m. to the access road at Patterson and Brandon roads that leads to the NRG Plant. Deputies arrived to find a silver

2016 Dodge Charger in flames on the north side of the road, according to sheriff’s spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer.

East Joliet Fire Chief Robert Scholtes said the fire was extinguished quickly.

“They typically check the trunk area for extension [of the fire] and saw the body and informed police, who took control of it as a crime scene,” Scholtes said.

Hoffmeyer said investigators learned the Charger was a rental car.

An autopsy performed Thursday after-

noon showed the man died from a single gunshot wound. Will County Chief Deputy Coroner Kevin Stevenson said investigators had a tentative identification of the victim and would use dental records to confirm that. Stevenson expected the comparisons to be completed Friday.

Authorities ask anyone who may have seen or heard something in that area around midnight to contact the Will County Sheriff’s Office Investigation Division at 815-727-8574.

Chief Benton of Joliet goes to Washington, D.C.

bstanley@shawmedia.com WASHINGTON, D.C. – Joliet’s top cop will meet Friday with the nation’s top law enforcement policymakers.

Police Chief Brian Benton will participate in a six-hour briefing with senior White House officials to discuss the Obama administration’s Task Force on 21st-Century Policing. The task force was organized last year as a response to several officer-involved shootings – including the fatal shooting of an unarmed teenage suspect in Ferguson, Missouri.

“They want to see from different police departments how far we’ve been able to progress with [recommendations from] their report. In light of recent events, this couldn’t be more important right now,” he said.

The briefing will be held in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building next to the White House.

Benton was asked three weeks ago about participating in the briefing and was formally invited last week. He did not know how many other departments will be represented.

Players reminded to be safe, aware of surroundings

mmallory@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Children, young adults and even moms could be seen Wednesday afternoon in downtown Plainfield with eyes glued to their phones.

With each passing block on Lockport Street, or a glance in a different direction, anywhere from two to five people were smiling, laughing or erupting in joy.

If you’ve seen similar scenes during the past week, there’s likely one gigantic reason behind it – the “Pokémon Go” smartphone app has captured hearts and minds across the nation. It has become the most-downloaded mobile game in U.S. history since it was released July 6.

The free, augmented reality game uses GPS coordinates to allow players to capture, battle and train virtual Pokémon characters – which are cartoon monsters – that appear on phone screens as players travel the real world.

Because the most important elements of the game are often found in public areas such as parks, downtown districts and bodies of water, it requires users to travel to these locations.

Plainfield residents Cyndi Kazmirzak, Jovanni Martinez and Miguel Villasenor spent Wednesday afternoon at Village Green Park in downtown Plainfield. Huddled under a picnic table shelter with an impending thunderstorm overhead, they expressed slight frustration with the strength and value of Pokémon they had found.

“This town is a bunch of Weedles,” Kazmirzak said, referring to the small, bug-like character.

Nevertheless, it’s given her something to do in between a graduation from cosmetology school and starting a new job in three weeks.

“The game encourages you to go outside,” Kazmirzak said.

Caution urged

Playing “Pokémon Go” is more popular with U.S. Android users right now than tweeting, binge watching TV on Netflix, or listening to music on Pandora or Spotify, the Associated Press reported Thursday. That’s according to new research from the digital market intelligence firm SimilarWeb, which looked at daily active

On Monday, 5.9 percent of all U.S. Android users played the game. In comparison, 4.1 percent used Twitter’s app on the same day. But the game still trails other popular apps such as Facebook Messenger, (22.1 percent), Instagram (13.1 percent) and Snapchat (8.3 percent).

The popularity of the game also has come with warnings. Police departments throughout the country have asked motorists to not play the game while driving.

There also have been reports of people using the game to lure victims to certain spots to rob them.

Since the release of the smartphone game last week, police have gotten a flurry of calls from residents about possible burglars or other strangers in their neighborhood. And the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum and Arlington National Cemetery requested Tuesday that smartphone users re-

frain from “catching” Pokémon when they visit.

The museum, for instance, is a Pokéstop – a place where players can get free in-game items – and online users say the cemetery also contains Pokéstops.

Museum officials are trying to have it removed from the game, Communications Director Andrew Hollinger said in a statement. He said playing the game inside a memorial to victims of Nazism is “extremely inappropriate.”

Coming together

Those playing the game, however, note that “Pokémon Go” is bringing people together.

About 20 teens and a few young adults were gathered Wednesday under the roof of the Richard A. Rock Amphitheater as rain began to fall.

Joliet students get to race boats in Hickory Creek

Summer program gives kids ‘heads up’ in science

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet elementary school students spent a part of Thursday seeing how fast small recycled boats could travel in Hickory Creek.

For the boat race, students from schools across Joliet Public School District 86 grouped into teams Thursday morning and stood in a creek in Pilcher Park that was ankle- or knee-high for some. The race is one of many activities the students participate in as part of the Kids ’N Nature camp program, and through it they learned about recyclable materials and what they can be used for.

Several students stood in a line on one end to release the six boats they crafted.

The rest were on another end to catch them so they wouldn’t drift away in the creek.

“Ah, the bated anticipation,” Steve Borden, a Cunningham Elementary School teacher, said before the race.

The students cheered when the boats were released, and one boat – named Trollies by the team who made it – reached the other side first.

Some of the boats managed to get through and the students had to rush through the creek to get them.

Nature camp program for students. It began eight years ago to address obesity issues in children and their lack of exposure to nature.

Student Contessa Szymczak, who will attend Gompers Junior High School, was part of the team that created Trollies, the winning boat. She and her teammates said they used a lot of duct tape for their boat, as well as put a cap on it to prevent

water seeping in, and gave it a pirate theme.

“We were proud,” Szymczak said.

After the race, the students walked around in the creek, either swimming, splashing or observing some of the wildlife, such as the dragonflies and crawfish.

Students taking part in the Kids ’N Nature program do many activities, such as a gardening, studying animal habitats,

hiking, arts, crafts and archery. They also learn outdoor survivor skills such as first aid, shelter and how to build a fire.

Borden said the program is great because the students want to be part of it.

“These are great kids. [The program] gives them a real good heads up on the world of science. It gets them to go out and do hands-on exploration,” Borden said.

Plainfield Fest promises food, music and rides to support fundraiser

fsarver@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – A festival in Plainfield that attracts tens of thousands of people returns this weekend.

Downtown Plainfield will have food, carnival rides, live bands, games, along with booths for local business and civic organizations for annual Plainfield Fest.

The festival is organized by the Plainfield Riverfront Foundation, a nonprofit that raises funds and awareness about the Plainfield Riverfront.

“We’re hoping for good weather on the horizon. We’re expecting a record

weekend,” said Robert Epley, executive director for the foundation.

Meteorologists anticipate partly cloudy and sunny weather this weekend, with temperatures in the high 70s and mid-80s – which will be good weather for the 10,000 to 12,000 people whom Epley expects to attend the Plainfield Fest this weekend.

Besides food, music and games, Epley said that pony rides, petting zoos and a pizza contest will be taking place. Epley said the Midwest Bags Tournament is one of the largest in the region.

Two companies to make offers for Union Station

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Two local businesses are interested in taking over the banquet room at Union Station: Mistwood Golf Club and Cutting Edge Catering.

A third business that provides catering and banquet services at the Kemper Lakes Golf Club in Kildeer has dropped out, Economic Development Director Steve Jones said.

Jones provided an update on the transition plan for the Grand Ballroom at Union Station on Thursday to the Joliet City Council Economic Development Committee.

“It’s down to two firms,” Jones said.

The city sent out a request for qual-

ifications to about 70 catering and banquet businesses earlier this year after Bussean Custom Caterers gave notice it would leave in January. Bussean has run the banquet operation at the old train station since 2001.

The city received responses from Mistwood in Romeoville, Cutting Edge in Shorewood and the Kemper caterer, Jones said. But at a recent walkthrough at Union Station, no one from Kemper showed up.

The walk-through was a mandatory criteria for the city to move to the next step, which is to consider proposals from Mistwood and Cutting Edge.

Jones said the city did not want to choose a company that had not been given a tour of the station.

“You have to be in the facility to see it and make a decent proposal, so you don’t come back later and say, ‘We didn’t know that,’ ” Jones said.

A proposal is likely to go to the City Council for approval in September, he said.

Exit lease

The Economic Development Committee also recommended approval of a transitional lease for Bussean, which lowers the monthly rent the company pays to Joliet at Union Station.

In turn, Bussean will leave light fixtures the company added to the banquet facility.

Bussean has paid 15 percent of gross revenues plus $4 a person for use of the

“I think it’s a fair and classy exit agreement,” said committee Chairman Larry Hug. Brian Nussbaum said the transitional lease provides some but not full compensation for the fixtures that Bussean has added to the room.

He said that Bussean management, which also runs Patrick Haley Mansion, another banquet facility in Joliet, are “excited to remain vibrant members of the business community. Hopefully, this agreement reflects that.”

The transitional lease will go to the full council for final approval at a later date.

City Center Partnership looks for new events manager

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The City Center Partnership is seeking a new marketing and event manager.

Sarah Strickland is departing, which leaves the Partnership with a one-person staff after not replacing an executive director who left a year ago.

Board Chairman Rod Tonelli, however, said Strickland will be replaced.

“The board discussed it this morning, and we’re working on putting a job notice together,” Tonelli said Thursday.

“We’re looking to replace her as soon as possible.”

Strickland is leaving for another job opportunity, Tonelli said. She will leave at the end of next week. Strickland did not return calls for comment.

The City Center Partnership manages downtown events, including the weekly Farmers Market and annual Race Fan Rally, as well as promoting business development in the district.

The organization had sought to step up its involvement in economic development in conjunction with a new Down-

To begin the case, a Petition for Dissolution of Marriage will be filed and the other spouse will be served with a summons. Upon filing of the Petition, the court assigns the case a case management date approximately two (2) to three (3) months after the filing date. Once the spouse is served, they have thirty (30) days to file their Appearance and Response to the Petition.

The parties will then have one hundred and twenty (120) days to complete a Parenting Allocation Judgment, setting forth who will make the decisions for the

minor children and the parenting time schedule for each party.

During this time period, the court can hear motions for temporary child support, maintenance, and other relevant issues. Further, the parties will exchange discovery information and documentation, evidencing their assets and liabilities.

Once discovery is completed, the parties can attempt to reach a settlement as to the division of their assets and liabilities. If an agreement is reached, it will be proved-up before the court and the Judgment for Dissolution of Marriage entered. However, if the parties cannot reach an agreement as to the division of their assets and liabilities and/or parental allocation, the court will set a pre-trial date to hear issues in dispute and make recommendations and/or a trial date to determine the same.

JOLIET TOWNSHIP – A Joliet Township man was arrested Wednesday as part of an online child pornography sting.

Anthony C. Rutten, 26, of the 2400 block of Pecan Street, was booked into the Will County Jail on two counts of possession of child pornography.

A statement from Attorney General Lisa Madigan said Rutten’s arrest was part of “Operation Glass House,” an Anthony C. ongoing investigation Rutten targeting active online child pornography traders. Rutten is the 82nd person to be arrested in the last six years.

“Each time these horrific images are viewed, children are re-victimized,” Madigan said in a statement.

“We will continue to be relentless in our pursuit of offenders who commit these appalling crimes.”

Joliet Township man arrested on child pornography charges

LOCAL BRIEFS Motorcycle rally planned Sunday to honor Minooka man

PLAINFIELD – A ride is scheduled for Sunday to honor the life of a Minooka man killed in a motorcycle crash four years ago and criticize what they deem a lenient sentence for the driver responsible.

“Justice For Ron Oswald” will begin at 10:30 a.m. July 17 when riders meet at Double J Sports Bar, 1001 Essington Road in Joliet, according to event organizers.

Riders will leave Double J’s at 11:30 a.m. to pass the cemetery where Oswald is buried and then the crash site. The procession will end at Tap House, 24402 Lockport St., Plainfield.

Oswald was killed July 14, 2012, when he was riding his Harley-Davidson near County Line Road and Route 126 in Plainfield when the driver of a Dodge Durango slammed into a Nissan Altima and pushed it into Oswald’s path. Oswald was killed and the family of four in the Altima was injured. The driver of the Durango, Andrew W. Henderson, 28, of Palos Park, was under the influence of heroin and Vicodin.

Henderson pleaded guilty to aggravated driving under the influence and was initially sentenced in September 2014 by

Judge Carla Alessio Policandriotes to nine years in prison. But Henderson’s work speaking to groups about the effect of heroin use caused the judge to reconsider his sentence in June, so he will remain on probation for two years instead.

Henderson spent two years in jail before undergoing drug treatment.

Vetter Road construction project starts Monday

JOLIET – A quarter-mile section of Vetter Road in Joliet will be closed for more than two months starting Monday for road construction. The road will be closed north of the intersection at CenterPoint Way. Work is expected to be completed Sept. 30, according to a news release from the city of Joliet.

CenterPoint Properties is expanding the section of Vetter Road from the existing two lanes to four lanes. A left-turn lane will be added for southbound Vetter.

Curbs and gutters also will be added.

Motorists are advised to exercise caution and seek alternate routes when traveling in the area, according to the news release. For information, call the Joliet Public Works Department at 815724-4200.

Objection filed on nominating petition Will County board seat

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – An objection has been filed against a nominating petition for a woman running in the November election for a seat on the Will County Board for District 6.

A hearing will be held at 9 a.m. July 26 at the Will County Courthouse.

The Will County Electoral Board – consisting of County Clerk Nancy Schultz Voots, Circuit Clerk Pamela McGuire and Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow – will hear the objection.

The objection was filed by Dawn Damiani to the nominating petition of Jody Thatcher, who is running as an independent candidate in the Nov. 8 general election.

District 6 includes Channahon, Shorewood, Wilmington and other townships.

The objection alleges that only 861 of the 1,643 signatures acquired by Thatcher are valid.

The petition requires that 1,251 signatures are from duly qualified, registered and legal voters who live in District 6.

The objection filed by Damiani, a resident of Shorewood, states that among other things, some collected signatures are not from registered voters and some are not accompanied by a full address.

It also states the petition contains signatures from people who are not residents of District 6.

Becky Gilliam, an election analyst for the Will County Clerk’s Office, said the electoral board will hear the objector’s case and determine whether the signatures are actually invalid.

Don Gould, R-Shorewood, and Ragan Freitag, R-Wilmington, are both incumbents seeking two-year terms for the District 6 seat on the Will County Board.

Members of the County Board also serve on the Forest Preserve District of Will County’s Board of Commissioners.

Lawmaker who survived 2012 double lung transplant dies

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – California state Sen. Sharon Runner, who left the Legislature in 2012 after receiving a double lung transplant and three years later made a dramatic return to the Senate, died Thursday, her family said in a statement.

She was 62.

Runner, a Republican from Lancaster, died at home after respiratory complications.

Runner and her husband, George Runner, a member of the state Board of Equalization, were a powerful force in the California GOP. They were the first couple to serve concurrently in the Legislature after Sharon Runner won her husband’s Assembly seat in 2002, when he moved up to the Senate.

The duo co-authored California’s Jessica’s Law, approved by voters in 2006 to restrict sex offenders from living near parks, schools and other places where children congregate.

Sharon Runner often called herself “the funner Runner” compared with her more serious husband.

She was absent from the Legislature for much of this year after her health again took a turn for the worse, and she had opted not to seek re-election this year.

“We take comfort in the fact that the Lord truly directed her path, and she is now home in the arms of her Savior,” Runner’s family said in their statement.

“She had a very soft manner about her. But she was tough as nails and a real fighter,” Anderson said. “Healthwise, the odds were against her, but she fought.”

Before embarking on their political careers, the Runners co-founded Desert Christian Schools, which has grown to three campuses with nearly 1,700 students.

Sharon Runner was a conservative who served in the state Assembly from 2002 to 2008. She was elected to the Senate in 2011 but did not seek re-election

in 2012 after her transplant.

She was treated for limited scleroderma, or CREST syndrome, an autoimmune condition that attacks the body’s connective tissue.

After recovering, she won a special election last year and returned to the Senate. Her bill to allow the governor to cancel a special primary election and declare a candidate elected if there is only one qualified person on the ballot was sent to the governor’s office for final consideration a day before her death.

Runner was a role model for Republican women in politics, said Assem-

blywoman Kristin Olsen, R-Riverbank, who served with Runner on the board of California Women Lead, which helps women run for office.

“She was one of the people who caused me to realize, you have to continue to push, to stand up for what you believe in,” Olsen said. “She did it, and I think she made it easier for others of us to do the same.”

With Jessica’s Law, the Runners pioneered a strategy for Republicans to influence state policy despite being far outnumbered by Democrats in the Legislature, said Douglas Johnson, a research fellow at the Rose Institute of State and Local Government at Claremont McKenna College. They showed that conservatives could start a conversation in the Legislature, then build momentum before going directly to voters with a ballot initiative, he said.

“Most of the time, when we talk about political couples historically, the man holds the office and the woman is behind the scenes advising him,” Johnson said. “They were not like that. She was often holding office, and they were an equal team.”

Runner is the first California lawmaker to die in office since Sen. Jenny Oropeza, D-Long Beach, died in 2010, said Alex Vassar, who studies legislative history and runs the One Voter Project website.

After her high-profile illness and recovery, Runner volunteered with organizations committed to increasing organ donations.

“It would be a great tribute to her memory for more Californians to sign up to be part of this vital program,” Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon, D-Paramount, said in a statement.

SPRINGFIELD – The state of Illinois’ spending will outstrip what it brings in by nearly $8 billion this year despite a stopgap budget agreement last month, according to a government analysis first obtained Thursday by The Associated Press.

The Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability reviewed the budget deal that lawmakers and Gov. Bruce Rauner approved in June on the brink of the new fiscal year, which began this month, at the behest of Republican Rep. David David McSweeney McSweeney.

The report, provided to AP in advance of general release later Thursday, found that the state will spend $39.6 billion – including $3 billion in obligations that were not addressed in the six-month stop-gap budget agreed to by Democrats who control the Legislature and Rauner – but will bring in only $31.8 billion.

Chicago’s Wrigley Field is site of active-shooter drill

CHICAGO – Chicago first responders plan to simulate a large-scale active-shooter incident at Wrigley Field.

Thursday’s emergency response exercise will run from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and include Chicago firefighters and police officers, the city’s emergency office and the Cubs. Police said the drill was planned months ago to coincide with Major League Baseball’s All-Star break this week. Cubs spokesman Julian Green said the team is happy to partner with law enforcement on the exercise to ensure a safe and secure environment.

Summer enrollment drops at U of Illinois 1st time in 6 years

URBANA – For the first time in six years, summer enrollment at the University of Illinois’ largest campus is down.

The News-Gazette in Champaign reported that enrollment at the Urbana-Champaign campus this summer is 11,214 – down by 470 students, or about 4 percent.

Summer enrollment had climbed every year since 2011, when it was 9,258.

In-state enrollment this summer is 5,616, while 3,407 foreign students are on campus.

University officials could not be reached immediately for comment.

SIU planning to remove algae from Campus Lake

CARBONDALE – Southern Illinois University plans to remove toxic algae from Campus Lake in hopes people can get back on the water next year.

The Southern Illinoisan reported that officials at the Carbondale university have closed the lake for the past three summers because of blue-green algae.

People who have contact with the water can develop skin rashes. The algae also contribute to environmental problems.

Kevin Bame, who is SIUC’s vice chancellor for administration and business, said that after consulting with faculty and other experts, the university plans to drop the water level of Campus Lake. That will expose about 20 acres of shoreline, allowing the algae to dry out. It then will be disposed of or pulled to a deeper end of the lake.

The process is expected to cost around $300,000.

CHICAGO – Officials said Illinois residents with Land of Lincoln Health insurance won’t be able to transfer what they’ve paid in copays and deductibles to new plans after the failing nonprofit company goes out of business.

Illinois Department of Insurance spokesman Michael Batkins told The Associated Press that the company’s 49,000 customers likely will have to start with a new deductible and out-of-pocket maximum. He said that was why the department advocated for the federal government to offset the payment the company owed.

“This could be very disruptive for people who either liked Land of Lincoln’s provider network or had met their deductible and other out-of-pocket limits,” said Stephani Becker, a health care policy analyst at the Chicago-based Sargent Shriver

WASHINGTON – Donald Trump abruptly postponed plans to announce his vice presidential pick after a day of rampant speculation, citing the “horrible attack” in Nice, France, that left scores dead.

Trump had planned to hold his first event with his yet-to-be-named running mate Friday morning in New York. He announced the change of plans Thursday evening on Twitter.

The stunning announcement raised questions about the status of Trump’s selection process. Indiana Gov. Mike Pence had emerged as a late favorite for the job, although Trump said he had not finalized the pick and advisers cautioned he could change his mind.

“I haven’t made my final, final decision,” Trump said on Fox News Channel. He said that while his running mate selection would “absolutely not” be changed by the France attack, he did not feel it was appropriate to hold a news conference in its aftermath.

Dozens of people were killed late Thursday in the French resort city of Nice when a truck drove onto a sidewalk and plowed through a crowd of Bastille Day revelers who’d gathered to watch fireworks.

In addition to Pence, Trump’s short list included former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, according to people familiar with the candidate’s thinking.

Writing online, Nice Matin journalist Damien Allemand, who was at the waterside, said the fireworks display had finished and the crowd had got up to leave when they heard a noise and cries.

“A fraction of a second later, an enormous white truck came along at a crazy speed, turning the wheel to mow down the maximum number of people,” he said.

“I saw bodies flying like bowling pins along its route. Heard noises, cries that I will never forget.”

Graphic footage showed a scene of horror up and down the Promenade, with broken bodies splayed out on the asphalt, some of them piled near one another, others bleeding out onto the road or twisted into unnatural shapes.

“Help my mother, please!” one person yells out amid a cacophony of screaming and crying. A pink girl’s bicycle is briefly seen overturned by the side of the road.

The origin and authenticity of the footage could not immediately be verified.

Kayla Repan, of Boca Raton, Florida, was among the hundreds gathered on the promenade to watch fireworks.

“The whole city was running. I got extremely frightened and ran away from the promenade,” she said. “It was chaos.”

NICE, France – A truck loaded with weapons and hand grenades drove onto a sidewalk for more than a mile, plowing through Bastille Day revelers who had gathered to watch fireworks in the French resort city of Nice late Thursday. At least 80 people were killed before police killed the driver, authorities said.

Nice prosecutor Jean-Michel Pretre described a horrific scene, with bodies strewn along the road, and Sylvie Toffin, a press officer with the local prefecture, said the truck ran over people on a “long trip” down the sidewalk near Nice’s Palais de la Mediterranee, a building that fronts the beach.

Wassim Bouhlel, a Nice native who spoke to the AP nearby, said that he saw a truck drive into the crowd.

“There was carnage on the road,” he said. “Bodies everywhere.” He said the driver emerged with a gun and started shooting.

France’s Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said 80 people were killed, including children, and 18 were in critical condition, and the Paris prosecutor’s office announced an investigation for “murder, attempted murder in an organized group linked to a terrorist enterprise.”

“We are in a war with terrorists who want to strike us at any price and in a very violent way,” Cazeneuve said.

The ranking politician of the Alpes-Maritime department that includes Nice said the truck plowed into the crowd over a distance of 1.2 miles.

Many of those on the ground were in shorts and other summer clothing.

Eric Ciotti said on BFM TV that police killed the driver “apparently after an exchange of gunfire.”

The president of the Provence Alpes Côte d’Azur regional council, which includes Nice, said the truck was loaded with arms and grenades. Christian Estrosi told BFM TV that “the driver fired on the crowd, according to the police who killed him.”

Images being broadcast across French media showed revelers running for their lives down Nice’s palm tree-lined Promenade des Anglais, the famous seaside boulevard named for the English aristocrats who proposed its construction in the 19th century.

Video footage showed men and women – one or two pushing strollers – racing to get away from the scenes.

And, in what appeared to be evidence of a gun battle, photos showed a truck with at least half a dozen bullet holes punched through its windshield.

Put higher education on strong path to future Gov. Bruce Rauner and the Legislature have shoved buckets under the leaking financial roofs of Illinois’ public universities by appropriating nearly $1 billion as part of the state’s stopgap budget.

But let’s be clear. Those buckets are nothing like a long-term solution. After slicing away at financial support for higher education for years, the state for most of the past year then cut off funding altogether.

Our state universities are now all but begging for stable and predictable funding. They want firm budgetary commitments of five years or more. Only then can they plan responsibly. If not, they will struggle – as they already are – to simply retain top talent and recruit top students.

To compete and prosper, a state must have a quality public university system, including a great flagship campus. Fortunately, past generations of Illinois leaders built up a strong network of universities, including a flagship school in the University of Illinois that is respected around the world. We can build on that legacy.

In a global knowledge economy, Illinois’ future relies on a highly educated workforce whose ideas can be transformed into jobs and revenue. Of the 20,000 or so students who graduate each year from one of the three University of Illinois campuses, 70 percent remain in the state. If more of those students head elsewhere, the state will suffer. And, on that score, we frankly don’t understand the argument, increasingly heard, that it is the students who benefit – so let them pay the full load of their education alone. As if a public university were nothing but a shopping mall.

A 2015 study by the Idaho firm Economic Modeling Specialists International concluded that for every dollar taxpayers spend on the University of Illinois, they earn an average annual return of 19.3 percent. Try getting that kind of average return in your 401K.

AMENDMENT

Even at a time of tight finances, the U. of I. is aiming high. Under new president Timothy Killeen, the university has adopted a forward-looking, aspirational “framework” that lists goals ranging from a more diverse student body and faculty to an expansion of global programs and more partnerships with Illinois businesses.

But Springfield must be a willing partner. In response to yearafter-year funding cuts, tuition has risen to the point that Illinois has become the nation’s fourth most expensive state for public higher education. In May, the Associated Press reported that worries about the stability of funding have driven down applications at Illinois’ public universities while Western Michigan University expects to enroll its largest freshman class from Illinois ever and Murray State University in Kentucky reports applications from some Illinois border counties are up as much as 40 percent.

Even as the U. of I. goes into overdrive to retain its top faculty, it has lost some of its best professors at least partly because of the budget crisis. If things don’t settle down, Killeen told the Sun-Times Editorial Board Wednesday, he worries he will lose more. You can only take annual budget cuts so long before the damage is permanent.

Just how helpful are those fiscal buckets the state provided? Even combined with an earlier round of emergency funding, the stopgap budget reduces funding for most of Illinois’ public universities by nearly 20 percent from the previous year. Before that, the U. of I.’s funding dropped from $804 milli0n in Fiscal Year 2002 to $649 million in Fiscal Year 2015. And future funding for all of higher education is uncertain.

It took generations to build Illinois’ reputation for excellence in public higher education. We are in danger of squandering that legacy in no time at all.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Fight against a Trump presidency To the Editor: The Scottish people have been following our presidential race and fly the Mexican flag right next door to Trump’s golf course just to spite him!

Just like here, Trump has been running roughshod over the little guy in Scotland legally, verbally and emotionally.

He gobbled up land in Scotland for his golf course despite local objections and environmental concerns, called people’s homes “ugly” and bulldozed mounds of dirt to hide their “ugly” houses from his resort. Adding insult to injury, Trump’s exaggerated promises of jobs and economic benefits have gone flat.

And then BREXIT happened. Trump’s praise of BREXIT while standing on Scottish soil indicates he doesn’t know or doesn’t care about the Scots’ overwhelming opposition. Trump is stupid, tone deaf or both. The Scots are not fond of losing their shirts while Trump

stands in front of them and predicts that he personally will make a fortune from the plummeting pound.

So the Scots are fighting mad and not shy about it. One of the more polite names for Trump is “mangled apricot hellbeast,” others are too crude to print. If the Scots can unite against Trump over a golf course, surely we can fight the good fight against the horror of a Trump presidency!

Plainfield South holds off Plainfield Central to win summer regional

Plainfield South and Plainfield Central arrived at Ed Flink Field on Thursday night ready to battle for the championship of the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association Summer State Tournament. The issue for both, however, was the lack of available front-line pitching.

So what happened? South junior right-hander Trey Rico threw an effi-

cient four-hit shutout through six innings and was coasting along with a 7-0 lead.

Game over, right? Not so fast.

Central coach John Rosner emptied his bench in the top of the seventh, sending a parade of pinch-hitters to the plate. The Wildcats’ young reserves mounted a rally against Rico and two relievers before finally succumbing, 7-5.

In fact, the score was 7-4 and the tying runs were on base with one out when Cougars coach Phil Bodine called for ace right-hander Austin Ma-

rozas. He retired Jake Schumake on a run-scoring groundout and struck out Sean Eulitz to end it.

“Trey Rico pitched an outstanding game for us,” Cougars coach Phil Bodine said. “He just ran out of gas in the seventh inning. We went to my ace and Austin closed it out. We knew he would.”

Rico struck out three and walked two through six innings before walking two more in the seventh.

South (13-3) advances to the Summer State Tournament beginning at 10 a.m. Monday at North Central College

in Naperville. The opponent will be either Lyons or Oak Park.

“I knew I had to throw strikes for us to be competitive in the championship game,” Rico said. “My best pitch was my fastball, and it’s great for us to win this regional. I hope I will be able to get another start next week.”

“This was great for our program,” Bodine said. “It’s the first time we’ve ever been in the state finals. In fact, in my 26 years of coaching, it’s the first time I’ve ever made state.”

Plainfield South, Central claim semifinal victories

Shaw Media correspondent LOCKPORT – Two Plainfield schools advanced to Thursday night’s championship game of the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association Summer Baseball Tournament with victories earlier Thursday in the semifinals that were rained out Wednesday night.

Plainfield South knocked off Joliet Catholic, 10-1, at Ed Flink Field in Lockport after Plainfield Central had beaten Plainfield North, 10-8, on the Wildcats’ home field.

South collected 12 hits and pitcher Konnor Ash struck out 10 and surrendered two hits in going 62/3 innings.

Nick Mayerhofer recorded the last out of the game.

“That was as good as Konnor has thrown the ball all summer,” South coach Phil Bodine said. “Now, with travel ball, we don’t get to see them all the time, but he was good today.”

Ash was in trouble in the third inning when he gave up the lone JCA run as Matt Bebar got an RBI walk to score Kyle Winkle, who had walked. With bases loaded and no outs, he recorded a strikeout and then

South struck for three runs in the bottom of the first inning against Central starter Zac Hafner. Sophomore catcher Justin McGuigan, who had an excellent tournament with the bat, singled with one out to spark the uprising. Marco Escobar singled home one run and another scored on an error on the play. Trey Stewart followed with an RBI single.

Stewart also doubled to fuel a two-run fourth inning that gave Rico a 5-0 cushion.

“I’ve really been hitting the ball well all week,” Stewart said. “I’ve been able to get ahead in the count and really hit the ball hard.”

South scored two runs in the top of the third on RBI singles by Ash and Marco Escobar off Hillman starter Aiden Tyrell. Escobar finished 3 for 3 with two RBIs and was hit by a pitch.

The Cougars scored a run in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead, Trey Stewart broke it open in the top of the fifth with a bases-loaded triple to make it 8-1.

“I was dropped down in the order and I saw more fastballs and I took advantage,” said Stewart, who went 3 for 3 with three RBIs, scored three runs and stole two bases. “We played good defense, hit the ball well and Konnor pitched great.”

Justin McGuigan, the Cougars’ catcher, also had a big day, going 4 for

“We take the summer very seriously at Plainfield South, and we really wanted to win the championship and move on to the state finals,” Mayerhofer said. “I squared up on a 2-1 fastball (on the two-run single) and really hit the ball well.”

South went up 7-0 in the bottom of the sixth as Antonio Guitierrez’s groundout knocked in one run and Jordan Mikel’s doubled plated another.

That appeared to be more than enough, but the Wildcats had other ideas.

Pinch-hitters Justin Divelbiss and Elias Soto delivered the big hits in the comeback effort, Divelbiss a run-scoring single to break up the shutout and Soto following two batters later with a two-run double. Two South errors along the way also helped make it more interesting, but Marozas came on with his big fastball and sealed the deal.

Wildcats designated hitter Zach Kreuger went 4 for 4 and shortstop Cam Cercone was 3 for 4 with an RBI. David Ascencio chipped in a two-run double in the first inning and finished with three RBIs. Trailing, 10-8, in the top of the seventh inning, North faced Wildcats closer Nick Heffernan. After giving up a leadoff double, Heffernan struck out the next three hitters. Heffernan also had a two-run double in the Wildcats’ five-run third inning that gave them a 10-6 lead.

Nate Yusko picked up the win in relief of the starter Ascensio. Yusko allowed one unearned run in his three solid innings of relief. He also had a single, sacrifice fly and two RBIs. Heffernan, who earned the save, allowed a run, in the top of the sixth.

“I went out there and threw

strikes and relied on my defense,” Yusko said. “It was nice to look and the scoreboard and see 10 runs on the board for us,” Kyle Cockrell, the winning pitcher in Central’s 9-1 win over Lockport on Tuesday, chipped in with a double and RBI single.

“I had been struggling lately at the plate, but I felt really good today,” Kreuger said. “I had a couple of firstpitch hits. This was a great win over our rivals from North.”

Ryan Doria had three singles and two RBIs for North (9-8), while Sam Jones added a two-run double and a single in four trips. Ryan Hutson fired three shutout innings in relief, allowing two hits.

“We swung the bats well today.

Even our outs were hit well,” Central coach John Rosner said. “A great outing for Zach (Kreuger). A great win for us and I’m so happy for the kids to be playing for the regional championship. Nate (Yusko) and Nick (Heffernan) did a great job in relief against North’s great lineup.”

A year ago I was playing in these tournaments and not doing very well.

But with what I did over the winter and all of the practice that I’ve put in, I knew that I had the opportunity to excel and I trusted it and now it’s paying off for me.”

As did Govern, Hawkins qualified for sectionals when he was a sophomore. But the Wildcat golfer was unable to get back there last season and that has made him work harder during the offseason in order to better prepare him for a state tournament trip in his senior year.

“I’ve played a lot more golf than in summers past by doing the iTour and practicing at Mistwood and I think that it’s helped a lot,” Hawkins said.

St Joe’s had gotten even at 9 in the seventh when with two outs, Ceven Crawford walked, Chris Zarala singled and Nick Dolnak delivered a game-tying two-run triple.

Ottawa put runners on the second and third with two outs in the top of the eighth, but Kirstein escaped the jam. Kirstein took over on the mound in the top of the fourth inning and allowed one unearned run on three singles the rest of the way.

He struck out nine and walked two.

MEN’S SOCCER Lewis adds eight to roster: Lewis

men’s soccer coach Evan Fiffles announced this week that Timm Adler, Loic Geuns, John Horstman, Philip Huang, Claude Kameni, Zac Lenz, Conor Mohr-Condron and Nico Mueller will play for the Flyers beginning with the 2016 season.

Adler, a midfielder, played in the Men’s Oberliga league last season.

Geuns, a forward, has played for KSK Tongeren (2nd/3rd Division) for the past five years and Patro Eisden (2nd Division) for the past two years.

Horstman, a midfielder, competed primarily at the club level as a prep for the Scott Gallagher Metro Academy based out of St. Louis, Mo. Horstman played five years for the club and was a member of the 2011 national championship squad.

Huang, a goalkeeper, is a redshirt junior transfer from DePaul. As a

freshman in 2013, he appeared in two matches for the Blue Demons, including one start.

Kameni, a defender/midfielder, has competed for the last three years as a member of SD Croatia Berlin in the U19 Regionalliga league. In 201314, he helped push SD Croatia Berlin to a fourth-place finish in the U19 Regionalliga.

Lenz, a defender/midfielder, played two years for the Chicago Fire Soccer Club.

Mohr-Condron, a defender, also played in the U19 Regionalliga league with Kameni. He competed for Eintracht Norderstedt and helped them to a U19 State Cup semifinal berth in 2015 and a U17 State Cup Championship in 2014.

Mueller, a forward, enters 2016 as a junior. He currently plays for SC Preussen Muenster II in the Westfalenliga league.

JOLIET – One of Plainfield South boys golf coach Tim Boe’s goals when he started his iTour for local golfers seven years ago was to provide more opportunities to play in tournaments during the summer months leading into their fall high school seasons.

This summer, 40 athletes have taken part in the five tournaments, which started June 14 and concludes with its sixth stop Monday at Heritage Bluffs. The latest event on the circuit took place Thursday at Wedgewood Golf Course.

Boe has made sure to keep the competitions interesting by holding them at six different sites, which included the nine-hole match play event held Monday at The Links at Carillon.

Others were played at Prairie Bluff, Broken Arrow and Whitetail Ridge.

He also set up an iCup points standings, which was similar to the FedEx points standings and set up a Twitter page – iTour@iTourcup – so that players could follow the results.

In the latest competition at Wedgewood, Plainfield South junior Parker Govern became the first of the competitors to win two titles this season after putting together nines of 39 and

40 to finish with a winning 79 score.

Minooka senior Noah Manzo was next-best with an 81, after turning in nines of 38 and 43.

Sam Behnke took third place with an 85, while Plainfield Central senior Jake Hawkins and Kalvin Fellows both put together rounds of 43 to finish tied for fourth place with 86 totals. Ryan Bell, Jack Kelly, Robbie Phillips and Tyler Guertin all tied for sixth place after posting rounds of 87 while Mason Kuhn was next with a 94.

In the updated standings through five events, Govern leads with 6,500 points while Behnke is next with 5,000. Manzo leads Hawkins 4,975 to 4,800 for third while Bell is fifth with 4275.

One day after winning the Joliet Park District’s Junior Tournament Boys B division title by five strokes over Bell, Govern capped off a busy week of tournament play with another victory.

He’s hoping that all of the time that he’s put in reflects his better play this summer and carries into the fall, where he looks to not only qualify for sectional again, but also get to state.

Questions about depth behind Miller

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com After three years of entering training camp with Martellus Bennett, a Pro Bowler and one of the best tight ends in the game, the Bears head to Bourbonnais with Zach Miller leading the group. The similar trend from the Bennett years will follow the Bears to Olivet Nazarene University – there will be a competition for the No. 2 tight end spot.

Three things to watch at the tight end position in training camp: Main man Miller: The 34 catches, 439 yards and five touchdowns helped earn Miller a multiyear contract after a breakout season. Miller, who turns 32 in October, has been a feel-good story in Chicago and is now the No. 1 tight end, a role he’s comfortable playing.

We have to remember Miller was effective playing almost every snap after Bennett went down late last season.

Now we’ll see what role he will play in the offense, as blocking may become a bigger part of his job description.

Training camp and the preseason are where Miller first made his impressions in 2014, so expect to see Jay Cutler connect with Miller often during camp practices. They’ve had a good rapport for years, so camp now is all about seeing Miller in his new, lead role, and how Dowell Loggains uses him in the offense.

Moeaki a factor: We’ll get to the crowded group of players vying to

be the No. 2 tight end alongside Miller this season, but we want to focus on Moeaki when it comes to training camp.

The former Wheaton-Warrenville South player was signed after minicamp and will use Bourbonnais as an opportunity to revive his career. As a rookie in 2010, Moeaki had 556 receiving yards and three scores. He missed 2011 before returning to get 453 yards for the Chiefs in 2012, but since then, Moeaki has only appeared in 19 games with the Bills, Seahawks and Falcons.

He has the most NFL experience of the other Bears tight ends and will be one of the intriguing players to monitor in practices.

Finding Miller’s complement: Joining Moeaki in the competition are Rob Housler, Khari Lee, converted defensive lineman Greg Scruggs and undrafted rookie Ben Braunecker. Joe Sommers and Gannon Sinclair round out the tight end room, one that is far from impressive.

Lee has the most experience in the system, playing often last season as a rookie after the Bears traded a draft pick for him. Housler had back-toback 400-yard seasons with Arizona in 2012-13 but has only 13 catches since.

Scruggs has imposing size but is raw as he switches to the offensive side of the ball.

Braunecker starred at the NFL Scouting Combine with his athleticism, and the Harvard product may turn into a fan favorite if he can step up as a receiving option for Cutler.

Relievers in the Outfield

The Associated Press SAN DIEGO – Cubs manager Joe Maddon gained attention June 28 when left-hander Travis Wood and right-hander Spencer Patton alternated between left field and the mound in the 14th inning against Cincinnati, and Wood got the final three outs of a 7-2, 15-inning win with right-hander Pedro Strop in left field.

The moves were made of necessity, not Mad-ness. Might he employ the Maddon Medley with premeditation?

“You should show more creativity,” he said. “Everybody’s afraid of injury all the time. God, man, drive a car in Manhattan – you want to be afraid of injury, just walk down the street.”

Maddon didn’t invent the strategy. As Philippe Cousineau pointed out in the Society for American Baseball Research’s Fall 2011 journal, the strategy was employed by the New York Mets’ Davey Johnson with lefty Jesse Orosco and righty Roger McDowell against the Reds on July 22, 1986, and by the Cubs’ Lou Piniella with lefty Sean Marshall and righty Aaron Heilman against St. Louis on July 12, 2009.

Maddon’s spin-the-pitchers came about after he ran out of position players. Righty Joel Peralta relieved Trevor Cahill with two on and one out in the 13th, and Wood took over in left as Chris Coghlan came out of the game in a double switch. Joey Votto lined to leaping second baseman Ben Zobrist, who turned it into a double play, and Maddon exchanged a fist bump with Wood in the dugout.

Patton relieved to start the 14th, retired the leadoff batter, then went to left when Maddon wanted Wood to face Jay Bruce. Bruce grounded out, they switched places again, and Patton retired Adam Duvall on a grounder.

After the Cubs burst ahead with five runs in the 15th, Wood worked around a two-out single to finish as Strop manned left – without having any defensive plays.

Having succeeded with the merry-goround, Maddon is intrigued about the possibility of doing it in the seventh or eighth inning.

“It’s something to be looked at down the road, where you could actually get a nice inning’s worth of work out of two pitchers, even two innings out of two guys based on the other team’s lineup left- and right-handed,” he said. “It’s something to be explored I think in a spring training setting.”

TROON, Scotland – Phil Mickelson was 16 feet away from a place in history he wouldn’t have to share with anyone.

Fans watched from a rooftop balcony. Royal Troon members strained to see out the window from the clubhouse behind the 18th green. Jack Nicklaus usually doesn’t watch golf on TV, but he made an exception for this moment.

In 436 majors held over the past 156 years, no one had ever shot 62.

That’s still the case. By a fraction of an inch.

“I want to cry,” Mickelson said.

Mickelson pointed his putter toward the hole and was ready to step into history Thursday in the British Open when his birdie putt turned sharply to the right at the mouth of the hole, just enough to ride the edge around the back of the cup and sit there, teasing him.

“You made a beautiful read and putt on that last hole but got absolutely stone-cold robbed,” Nicklaus said in a message on Facebook.

Mickelson plopped his hand on his forehead in disbelief. His caddie, Jim “Bones” Mackay, was so stunned that he fell over backward.

“It was one of the best rounds I’ve ever played ... and yet I want to shed a tear right now,” Mickelson said. “That putt on 18 was an opportunity to do something historical. I knew it, and with a foot to go I thought I had done it. I saw that ball rolling right in the center. I went to go get it. I had that surge of adrenaline that I had just shot 62, and then I had the heartbreak that I didn’t.”

No tears were necessary at Royal Troon, not after a round of 63 that was

brilliant even by Lefty’s standards, and certainly not after building a three-shot lead over Patrick Reed and Martin Kaymer on an ideal day by the Irish Sea. Mickelson seized the moment with a birdie on the par-5 16th from a bunker short of the green, and a 4-iron to 15 feet for birdie on the par-3 17th to reach 8-under par. He knew no one had ever shot 62 in a major. He also knew he most likely would never get a chance like this.

“That would have been really something special,” he said. “So to have that putt lip out, that’s going to sting for a while.”

Even with such a close call, Mickelson is in good company.

Nicklaus missed a putt just inside 3 feet for a 62 in the 1980 U.S. Open at Baltusrol. Greg Norman had to only twoputt from 30 feet for a 62 at Turnberry in the 1986 British Open and took three putts. Tiger Woods watched his 15-foot putt for 62 spin 270 degrees around the cup in the 2007 PGA Championship at Southern Hills. Nick Price’s birdie putt for a 62 in the 1986 Masters dipped in and out of the cup.

It wasn’t for a lack of effort. He went with a 6-iron to play a baby cut back toward the hole, and it worked out perfectly. He brought in his caddie and told him that “I need your best read.”

Ernie Els did his part, putting out of turn to turn the stage over to Mickelson.

The pace was perfect. The putt looked perfect – until it wasn’t. By a fraction.

And now, he faces a return to reality. Of the seven previous players to open with a 63 in a major, only Nicklaus at the 1980 U.S. Open and Raymond Floyd at the 1982 PGA Championship went on to win.

JOLIET – Three area Orthodox churches are sharing their ethnic heritage this month through their annual festivals.

In addition, Holy Cross Catholic Church in Joliet will host its parish picnic Sunday, which will feature a variety of Polish food and entertainment.

All Saints Greek Orthodox Church

“Joliet’s 2016 Taste of Greek” on July 29 and July 30 will feature a variety of food: leg of lamb, shish kebabs, gyros and pastitsio, a macaroni dish that people liken to “a Greek lasagna,” said Maria Meintanis of New Lenox, one of the coordinators.

For dessert, festival-goers can choose baklava and loukoumades, a “Greek doughnut hole with honey.”

The Apollo Dance Troupe will entertain on both days. The troupe is comprised mostly of high school students, some of whom belong to All Saints, Meintanis said.

Last year, the church served approximately 2,000 dinners, Meintanis said, and organizers are hoping for an even larger turnout for 2016. Proceeds go into the church’s general fund.

“It’s our biggest fundraiser of the year and covers – probably – a quarter of our expenses for the year,” Meintanis said.

Assumption Greek Orthodox Church of Homer Glen

It’s the fourth year for this church’s “Greek For a Day” festival, which is actually held on two days – July 23 and July 24, said Dorothy Michalarias of Oak Lawn, who is co-chairing the event with Steve Karenzis.

“People can experience our tradition, see our church, eat our food,” Michalarias said, “and learn how to dance Greek.”

The festival will include pork and chicken kebabs, gyros, salads, Greek pastries and a DJ. The $1 admission cost benefits the church’s general fund.

“We’re hoping everyone will have a good time,” Michalarias said, “and that we have good weather.”

American food at its picnic on Sunday, the church represents both its ethnicities, coordinator Mary Nemanich said.

Menu items include pierogies and smoked Polish sausage with sauerkraut, as well as barbecue beef, hot dogs and pizza. Last year, a parishioner surprised organizers by showing up with a batch of homemade blood sausage.

“We sold them until we ran out,” Nemanich said.

The church’s weekly Polish Mass at 10:30 a.m. will move to The Grotto at St. Joseph Park on picnic day. Polish musicians will provide the day’s entertainment at the park. Kids activities and a possible car show round out the day.

Many people don’t realize Joliet, Plainfield and Romeoville have a large Polish community eager to share its heritage, Nemanich said.

“They’re a very accepting, welcoming group,” she said.

Vicki Dorsey of Joliet, who is helping to coordinate this year’s Serb Fest on July 24, said the return of this annual festival is now in its second year.

The event is held at St. Joseph Park, just like in the 1970s.

“We decided it would be a good thing to go back out in the community and show our Serbian heritage,” Dorsey said.

Plainfield vocalist in final rounds of national singing competition PLAINFIELD – During May, vocalist Karlie Traversa, 20, of Plainfield, traveled to Boston, Massachusetts, for the final rounds of Classical Singer Magazine’s National Singing Competition, University Division.

Prior to May, auditions were held in many cities across the United States.

There was one audition site in Illinois, in Chicago. Approximately 334 university students auditioned. Traversa was one of the vocalists out of the Chicago competition that advanced to the second round in Boston.

In Boston, Traversa auditioned again and was a second-round winner and advanced to the semifinals. She finished

8th-grader at John F. Kennedy Middle School is a national champion gymnast Plainfield – Natalie Schulte put her 7-year-old daughter Skyla into gymnastics after noticing she was doing flips and cartwheels in the house.

Six years later, 13-year-old Skyla Schulte is a national champion gymnast.

The John F. Kennedy Middle School eighth-grader won the all-around Women’s Junior Olympic Level 9 Eastern Championships in Virginia on April 29. She competed against 36 other gymnasts.

Schulte competed in the uneven bars, balance beam, vault and floor exercise. Natalie Schulte said the scores from those four events are combined to get her all-around score.

This was her first year competing for the national title. She also took the national title on the uneven bars.

Skyla practices 20 hours a week while maintaining good grades at John F. Kennedy. If her grades slip, she won’t be able to participate in gymnastics, her mom said. Skyla does her homework during study hall, after practice and sometime in the car to and from practice.

Natalie said Skyla is very disciplined when it comes to balancing school and gymnastics.

Skyla is looking forward to competing at the college level at her dream school, Michigan State, she said.

JOLIET – On June 11 at Gallery Seven, 116 N. Chicago St. in Joliet, the winners of Open Lens VII, a national fine art juried photography exhibit, were announced.

Taking top honors was Christine Foley from Plainfield with her photograph “Centenarian Beauty.”

Also placing in the exhibit for first place was Kathy Kolbe from Sandwich, with her image “Loving Hands.”

Second place went to Diana Chrisman of Bloomingdale for her image titled “Towering Waves,” and Tim Rex from Lemont took third place with his image “Patriotic Stare.”

Rounding out the awards were honorable mentions: Sherry Snyder, Bill Dixon from Lemont, Michael Kirkland from Chicago, Donna Andrzejewski from Downers Grove, Dawn Boe from LaGrange, Larry Johnson from Morris, Louisa Murzyn from Munster and Dulcey Lima from Oak Brook Terrace.

ELWOOD –The Children’s Garden Project of the Village of Elwood was a 2016 Youth Project Award winner at Trees Forever’s Annual Celebration and Awards Dinner at The Hotel at Kirkwood in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on June 16.

The members of the children’s garden committee, along with 27 third-graders and community residents, worked with Trees Forever and a local garden center to plant 58 trees last year. This spring, the same children who planted the trees returned to identify, retag and mulch the trees.

Eighth-grade students from Elwood School also painted murals to beautify the area and attract visitors to the site.

The Outstanding Youth Project awards recognize individuals under the age of 25 who have made an exceptional contribution to tree planting and care in their community, or successful projects that are organized or implemented by, or engage, individuals under the age of 25.

30 Alzheimer’s research focuses on proteins Dear Dr. K: Is there anything new on the horizon for treatment of Alzheimer’s disease?

Dear Reader: Alzheimer’s disease affects more than 5 million people in the United States, alone. And that number is expected to more than double by 2050. I spoke to my colleague Dr. Gad Marshall about advances in Alzheimer’s treatment. He is an assistant professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School.

Medical research has discovered two proteins found in the brain are important in causing Alzheimer’s disease. The first is called amyloid-beta. This protein clumps together to form plaques in the brain. These plaques long have been recognized as a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease.

Unfortunately, drugs and vaccines that target amyloid-beta so far have not proved very effective. The problem might be by the time Alzheimer’s symptoms appear, plaque formation is already extensive. Much damage already has been done, and treatment may come too late.

Through research, doctors have developed techniques for spotting plaques of amyloid-beta when they are first forming, in younger adulthood. With that tool in hand, doctors now are conducting large studies to see whether treatment to lower amyloid-beta levels at a much earlier stage will reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

Recently, new potential treatments have focused on a different protein: tau. Tau clumps together in the brain to form what are called “tangles.” Like the plaques of amyloid-beta, the tau tangles long have been a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease. Tau helps to transport nutrients into the cells and to move waste out of cells.

However, when tau protein forms tangles, brain cells have trouble getting enough nutrients and eliminating waste. As a result, brain cells slowly die. In a recent

They concluded the presence of dysfunctional tau protein might be more important than amyloid-beta in causing the cognitive decline and memory loss seen in Alzheimer’s.

Tau tangles occur early in the disease process. The hope is by designing treatments that target tau, we can prevent symptoms of Alzheimer’s, or slow down symptoms in those who already have signs of dementia.

The challenge is to focus on the right ones.

You need normal tau protein in the brain.

The trick is to remove only the abnormal tau protein that is damaging nerve cells.

Several tau-focused drugs are in development. They include: • LMTX. This drug is supposed to reduce the clumping together of abnormal tau proteins.

• TPI 287. This drug is designed to stabilize the nerve cell microtubules that are damaged by abnormal tau proteins.

• Nilotinib. This FDA-approved leukemia drug is thought to help clear abnormal tau from the brain.
