Metra to add express trains on Rock Island Line SHAW MEDIA

JOLIET – Metra intends to launch a trial program next month to enhance midday service on the Rock Island Line by adding express trains that should shave 15 to 20 minutes off the trip between suburban stations and downtown Chicago.

The six-month pilot project is set to start Aug. 1, and ridership will be evaluated before any permanent changes would be made to the Rock Island schedule. The added service is expected to cost about $290,000 annually, according to a news release from the city of Joliet.

The Rock Island schedule will be modified to add three inbound express trains and two outbound express runs during the midday, according to the news release. The three inbound trains will make all stops from Joliet to Blue Island, and then express to the 35th Street/Lou Jones Station or the LaSalle Street Station. Passengers will have the option to request a flag stop at the 35th Street/Lou Jones.

Suburban customers going to a Beverly Branch station and branch riders heading to the suburbs will need to transfer at Blue Island.

Two midday outbound express trains also have been added that will offer express service from LaSalle Street to Blue Island and stations farther south with the option of flag stops at 35th Street/Lou Jones. Two midday outbound trains also will accom-

Customers wishing to make transfers should tell their conductor on the first leg of their trip so their ticket can be marked appropriately. In addition, at stations marked as flag stops, the train will only stop if the passengers notify the conductor and will stop to pick up passengers only if they are visible to the engineer on the platform, according to the news release.

“Reducing travel times will encourage more people from the south suburbs to take the train. The added inbound express trains are ideal for recreational trips into the city and the addition of the 1:30 p.m. outbound express will be popular for those working a half day,” Metra Executive Director/CEO Don Orseno said in the news release.

The line runs from Joliet to Chicago, with stops that include New Lenox, Mokena, Tinley Park and Blue Island, among other places. New timetables are expected to be released soon.

Welter resigns from the Grundy County Board

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Grundy County Board Chairman David Welter submitted his resignation at Tuesday evening’s regular meeting of the board.

The resignation, which became effective at midnight, was because of his appointment as the 75th District state representative seat, which was vacated in June by John Antho- David Welter ny.

Welter is scheduled to be sworn in as state representative at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Grundy County Courthouse.

Welter thanked his fellow board members and his wife for their support.

Grundy County Administrator Doug Pryor said that board rules state that Vice Chairman Chris Balkema will serve

as chairman until the regular August meeting, when board members will vote in a new chairman and vice chairman if needed.

Grundy County Republican Party Chairman Aren Hansen said the party will convene to make a nomination for fill the seat opening because of Welter’s resignation. Pryor said that he expects both the seat to be filled and leadership to be chosen at the August board meeting.

Welter, who has served on the Grundy County Board since age 19, was appointed Grundy County chairman Dec. 1, 2014.

His term representing District 1 runs through December.

Welter will fill the 75th District house seat until the current term ends in January. Anthony, R-Joliet, resigned June 17 and was named executive assistant to the director of the Illinois Department of Corrections on June 20, according to the department website.

Welter also will appear on the November general election ballot as the Republican candidate for the 75th House District, where he will face Democrat Martha Shugart.

Anthony was appointed to the seat in August 2013 when previous state Rep. Pam Roth, R-Morris, stepped down when she moved to Texas. In November 2014, Anthony won the seat when he faced off against Shugart.

Welter of Morris was unanimously chosen Saturday by the 75th Legislative District Appointment Committee to fill the term.

The committee – composed of Hansen, Will County Republican Chairwoman Kathy Havel, Kendall County Republican Chairman James Marter and LaSalle County Republican Chairman Don Jensen – interviewed eight applicants during the course of a seven-hour meeting Saturday in Morris before appointing Welter.

MAKING MOVES, MAKING FRIENDS Gymnastics bring exercise, interaction to special needs children

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Two years ago, Don and Allyson Adlfinger found a way to get their son, Jacob, physically active.

While searching the internet, they came across Superstarz Gymnastics, which at the time was a new organization. Led by lifelong gymnast Lisa Convalle, the growing organization offers gymnastics and tumbling classes to children and teens with special needs, including, but not limited to, autism, sensory processing disorder and developmental delays.

Since he started with Superstarz

Gymnastics, Jacob, who has autism, has developed core strength and muscle tone, Don said, as it can be difficult to find activities for children with these disorders. Jacob’s overall physical ability has improved greatly.

Also, he has something to look forward to twice each week.

“He absolutely loves it,” Don said.

“And he couldn’t have a better coach.”

Convalle was an active gymnast from 2 or 3 years old until she broke her back at 15, she said. Since then, she’s been coaching in some form or fashion, from toddlers to adults. But the special needs community is by far her favorite to be with, she said.

“There’s not enough opportunities for them, or credit given to them or their parents,” Convalle said. “There’s still this stigma that people don’t want to talk about the special needs population.”

Through gymnastics, she said children with special needs learn focus and patience while experiencing it with peers who are going through the same things.

“I hope something I do can help them feel more accepted or proud of themselves,” Convalle said.

Joliet bridge work resumes Thursday

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – It’s time to get back to work on the bridges in downtown Joliet.

The state will do repairs on the Ruby Street bridge Thursday and Friday ahead of next week’s shutdown of the Cass Street bridge.

On Wednesday, the Jackson Street bridge was out of service for most of the day, but not because of bridge work. The bridge was up because of street work that required cutting into a section of Jackson Street just east of the bridge.

Motorists have enjoyed more than three weeks of relatively unimpeded crossings over the Des Plaines River in and out of downtown since the paint job on the Jefferson Street bridge deck was completed June 17.

That ended Wednesday when the Jackson Street bridge was lifted for

A ComEd contractor was doing work on the utility manhole at the Joliet Street intersection, which would have blocked any traffic coming over the bridge. The job was completed Wednesday.

Joliet Public Works Director James Trizna said the city advised ComEd to get the work done before next week’s closing of the Cass Street bridge.

“We said do it now before the 18th.

That’s when they close Cass Street,” Trizna said.

Ruby Street

The Illinois Department of Transportation has some work to do on the Ruby Street bridge before it gets to Cass Street.

Motorists might want to look for alternative routes for the next two days as IDOT does both bridge repairs and road work just west of the Ruby Street bridge.

Traffic has been slowed by a road resurfacing project that started this week between the bridge and Broadway Street, a section of Ruby Street that also is Illinois 53 and maintained by the

state. That work should be completed by the end of the week depending on the weather, said IDOT spokeswoman Gianna Urgo.

Meanwhile, there will be lane closures on the Ruby Street bridge for repairs that start Thursday and are expected to end Friday, depending on the weather. The bridge will remain open as workers repair the steel-grid deck.

Cass Street

Repainting of the Cass Street bridge is scheduled to start Monday.

The project, which will last into the fall, has been scheduled for months and is similar to the paint job completed on the Jefferson Street bridge. The bridge will only be painted at deck level and below.

The Cass Street project originally had been scheduled to start July 5 but was delayed.

Continued from page 3 other children in the classes is social activity. As Allyson explained, she and her husband were trying to get Jacob active at a place where people would understand and accept him.

“It’s hard for him to make friends,” Allyson said. “Here, he gets to see the same kids each week. It helps him interact.”

The Adlfingers learned soon after enrolling Jacob that they weren’t alone.

Many of the kids never had been invited to a friend’s birthday party before joining Superstarz. That was until Jacob’s last birthday at the Aspire Gymnastics Academy, which hosts Convalle’s classes.

“Five different parents said it was the first time their child was invited to a kid’s birthday party,” Allyson said.

This isn’t limited to Jacob, who Convalle said was her first student. His 3-year-old sister Brooke, who has sensory processing disorder, started classes in January. Don said there are two other families with multiple kids taking the classes.

“We’re not sure what we’d do without her,” Don said. “She’s all about the kids.”

Convalle’s classes use a one-to-one peer buddy system, which encourages teamwork and socialization, and helps the students stay focused, motivated and safe, she said. The volunteers are mostly high school and college students interested in the fields of pediatric medicine, therapy or education.

Changing lives with God’s word Two-week crusade begins Saturday

JOLIET – The City Wide Crusade for Christ is back in Joliet, with a new name and slightly altered format.

John L. King, the event’s coordinator, said the crusade runs daily from Saturday to July 30, which is two weeks shorter than past years. And the focus is the evening service, although the crusade will still offer a few informational community events in the daytime, presented by various local agencies.

“The purpose is to bring the community out to hear some good motivational speakers, tempered with the word of God, of course,” King said.

To encourage more people to attend and to truly represent the heart of the crusade, the organizing name was changed. Instead of Joliet Churches United for Christ, the crusade is now

The crusade begins at 3:30 p.m. Saturday under a giant white tent that will be set up at 224 S. Chicago St. in Joliet.

Features that day include a mini-concert, a mayoral reception, a cookout and a food giveaway.

The tent will remain in place through July 22 at the Chicago Street location. During the evenings at 7 p.m. each night, local churches will take turns hosting a 90-minute service.

The crusade is not about proselytizing.

“Our goal is not to get people into churches but off the streets,” King said, “and to change their lives.”

King said he organized the first crusade in 1988 with just six churches. The event has grown to involve 30 churches.

Still, people are busier than ever these days, King said, and it’s difficult for church pastors to make time to run a month-long crusade.

A crusade didn’t happen last year because King was working out of town and preparations were too lengthy. But whether the crusade lasts two weeks or four weeks, King said the goal is always

JOLIET – The Catholic Charities, Diocese of Joliet Foster Grandparent Program offers older adults an opportunity to help area children develop academic and life skills that are critical to their development and future successes.

Volunteers will be matched to opportunities that interest them based on skills and passions. The program works with elementary schools in Districts 86 and 89, faith-based schools, Head Start sites, and preschools.

Foster Grandparent volunteers must be 55 and older and willing to serve about 20 hours a week. Foster grandparents who are income eligible will receive a taxfree hourly stipend to help cover costs associated with volunteering. Catholic Charities will provide preservice orientation and training to prepare volunteers for this opportunity.

LOCKPORT – State education officials will change the kind of exams high school students will take the upcoming school year – a decision that at least one local official said could prove challenging.

Starting this school year, the Illinois State Board of Education will provide the College Board’s SAT exam at no cost to all juniors who attend public high schools. That exam will replace the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers.

The change comes after only two administrations of PARCC, which included dismal test scores and thousands of students skipping exams. Students from third to eighth grade will continue to take the PARCC exams in the spring. “[PARCC] wasn’t rolled out very well, and a lot of it was because of budgets and so on. It really didn’t serve its intended purpose,” said Brett Gould, assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction for Lockport High School District 205.

Gould said the change of exams means fewer testing days and more time for classroom instruction. However, District 205 wasn’t able to study growth data from PARCC since district officials were only able to administer it to freshmen students.

Another issue is that the district has traditionally used ACT exams, and the change to SAT means it will lose 15 years of history and data, he said.

The timing of the change also isn’t good for schools because classes begin in about a month, leaving a short time for adjustment, he said.

State education officials said they decided to change exams after speaking with parents, administrators, unions and others. Many families opposed the test, becoming part of a national movement that questions the amount of school testing.

Gould also said that in the past, there’s been discussions about the need for a K-12 assessment that could monitor growth over a long period and PARCC was meant to eventually be that type of assessment.

The change in exams means that there will be no connection between statewide assessments between the grade schools and high schools, he said.

“PARCC in theory was probably a good idea. It was just the way the state of Illinois implemented it,” he said.

ISBE is supporting the decision as a cutback on standardized testing while providing equitable access to a college entrance exam required for admissions applications.

Shorewood trustees approve expansion for business

Shaw Media correspondent SHOREWOOD – The Shorewood Board of Trustees approved Tuesday night a business expansion, various improvements to the village and a homeowner tax rebate.

Joe Serena, who owns the property owner at 204 Amendodge Drive, asked for board approval of a site plan amendment for Bello Terra Properties Inc., according to a summary prepared by Community Development Director Karen James.

James stated in her summary that the current tenant was Steffco, which prepares spice packets for corned beef.

Serena said the 56-by-64 foot expansion would be primarily for storage of the current tenant’s products, and would not add any jobs to the area.

“This is pretty cut and dry,” Trustee Dan Warren said. “The Planning and Zoning Commission brings this to the board with a 7-0 vote for your approval.”

The site plan amendment was approved, with Trustees Dan Anderson

and Steve Brockman absent.

The board also approved entering into an economic incentive agreement with TransChicago Truck Group so it can open another franchise at the Shorewood location.

“We established in Shorewood in 2011 as a freightliner sales company.

We had the idea to expand into another franchise to sell a smaller Isuzu truck in order to expand customer base,” TransChicago Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Mike Cappellett said.

Cappellett said the company recently hired five people, and will be ready to go as soon as the board approved. He also estimated that within 12 months, the company should have 12 more new hires. The new jobs were technicians, parts and warehouse union workers.

He said sales staff will be added in the future.

The final resolution approved by the board established the criteria for a property tax rebate program for homeowners within the village. The past couple of meetings, the board had discussed the program and its past successes and

failures.

Village Finance Director Anne Burkholder said this was initiated in 2012, and qualified homeowners were rebated 25 percent of the village’s share of the property tax bill, exclusive to levies for bonds. Due to home rule status, the village has changed that amount to 50 percent.

The resolution states specific criteria must be met for the homeowner to qualify. The homeowner must be owned and occupied by the resident for the entire calendar year; residents must complete the application and return it to the village by Dec. 15 each year; residents are not eligible if they owe past due bills or have tickets for violations; residents must have title of residence; and have paid all real estate taxes.

Burkholder said those who qualify will receive the paperwork in the mail, and those who do not receive the mailings can appeal to the village with proper documentation.

MORRIS – The Grundy County Coroner and Morris police are investigating the death of a woman who authorities say took her own life Tuesday night in downtown Morris near Liberty and Main streets.

Grundy County Coroner John Callahan said police were dispatched to the area where they found a 49-yearold female parked in the westbound lane of Main Street, according to a news release issued late Tuesday night by the coroner’s office. He identified her Wednesday afternoon as Shari Lynn Raad of Morris, after next of kin were notified.

“We’re still investigating the situation,” Morris Police Chief Brent Dite said. “The results clearly indicate that she died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.”

Callahan said in the news release that the woman had depression and

other health conditions, and had been in contact with friends just prior to the incident. A friend called police, and two officers from the Morris Police Department were approaching the vehicle when the woman took her own life, according to the news release.

Dite said Wednesday that the police chaplain was called to the scene for the responding police officers, and counseling is available for first responders.

Callahan pronounced the woman dead at 8:20 p.m. Tuesday. The coroner’s office and Morris police continue to investigate.

Edward was born Aug. 28, 1951, in Schlater, Mississippi, to Mattie and Edward Calvert Sr. The family relocated to Chicago in 1956, where Edward attended Beacon House classes for students with special needs. The family then moved to Joliet in 1975, where he attended Corner Stone Services for several years. Edward captured the hearts of most people he met, and he will be greatly missed by all that knew him.

Edward was preceded in death by his father, Edward Calvert Sr.; brother, Theoda Calvert Sr.; and a very special nephew, Ronald Calvert.

Edward departed this life on Friday, July 8, 2016.

Edward Calvert Jr. leaves to cherish his memories his mother, Mattie Caples; three sisters, Patricia Stovall, Mathries James and Michelle (Darryl) Prince; two brothers, Kenneth and Eric Calvert. He also leaves behind, loving aunts, uncles, numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

She graduated from Loyola University Chicago with B.S. in nursing, received her master’s of science from Northern Illinois University, and completed coursework and exams for her Ph.D in educational leadership and policy studies at Loyola University Chicago. Linda worked for more than three decades at which time she held the following positions: A staff nurse at Silver Cross Hospital, an in-service educator at St. Joseph Medical Center, a faculty member at Leach College of Nursing. During this time of employment she was credentialed as a Certified Nurse Educator (C.N.E.) by the National League for Nursing as well as being a coordinator of the Allied Health Program at the University of St. Francis, Joliet.

Linda loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, reading books and bird watching. Linda was married to the love of her life, Ronald O. Erickson, on March 24, 1973, to whom she was a devoted wife for 43 years.

She was the beloved mother to Melissa (Matt) Swick, Daniel (Jennifer) Erickson and Steven (Nichole) Erickson; cherished grandmother “JaJa” of Caleb, Ella, Lexy (Chance), Gabrielle, Maya, Gwenivere, Grace and Mason; proud great-grandmother to Weston Bentley; loving sister to Louise (Joseph-deceased) Gersich; sister-in-law and treasured friend to Patty (Gerald-deceased) Barnes, Betty (William-deceased) Salefski and Joan (Henry) Colbert; aunt to numerous nieces and nephews; niece to Doris (Danny-deceased) Kramerich; and cherished sisterly friend to Connie Litwiller.

Kathy met Tom on a blind date for New Year’s Eve 1962, they were engaged the following New Year’s, and married on July 18, 1964. Together, they raised three wonderful girls who they proudly saw graduate from Big 10 universities.

Kathy was the heart of the family and a gracious hostess. She created beautiful draperies as a seamstress with Window Designs in Joliet. She was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church and the Women of Rotary.

Clinton urges nation to fix divisions

The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Hillary Clinton said Wednesday that the Republican Party of Abraham Lincoln has been transformed into “the party of Trump,” declaring her GOP presidential opponent a polarizing figure who is deepening the divisions in America.

Clinton embraced the symbolism of Lincoln’s “House Divided” speech, using the Illinois Old State House chamber as the backdrop to argue that the nation needs to repair its divisions after a series of high-profile police shootings. A week before the Republican convention, Clinton said presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump would do little to heal the country.

“This man is the nominee of the party of Lincoln. We are watching it become the party of Trump. And that’s not just a huge loss for our democracy – it is a threat to it,” Clinton said, speaking from the black walnut wooden dais in the Old State Capitol. “Because Donald Trump’s campaign adds up to an ugly, dangerous message to America.”

Obama: Still far from solving police, community issues

WASHINGTON – America is “not even close” to where it needs to be in terms of resolving issues between police and the communities they serve, President Barack Obama said after concluding a more than three-hour meeting Wednesday with community activists, politicians and law enforcement officials.

Obama expressed optimism, however, and said the participants – who included members of the Black Lives Matter movement – agreed such conversations need to continue despite emotions running raw.

Obama has devoted his attention this week to the gun violence directed at police officers as well as shootings by police. The focus comes a few days after a black Army veteran killed five police officers in revenge for police shooting black men in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and the Minneapolis suburbs.

On Tuesday, Obama attended a memorial service for the five slain Dallas officers and called the families of Alton Sterling in Louisiana and Philando Castile in Minnesota to offer condolences. He said he wanted Americans to have an open heart so that they can learn to look at the world through each other’s eyes, and Wednesday’s meeting followed that theme.

Obama said it would be key to repeat the “kind of respectful conversations we’ve had here” across the country.

“The conversation that took place around this table is very different than the one that you see on a day-to-day or hourly basis in the me-

dia,” Obama said.

But Obama also said the “bad news” was that making progress is hard.

“We’re not even close to being there yet, where we want to be,” he said.

The nearly three dozen people invited to the White House included some police organizations that have little regard for Black Lives Matter, a group they blame for inciting violence against police officers. White House officials acknowledged that enhancing the trust that has been frayed in so many communities will be a job for future presidents, but they said Obama was determined to get all sides to commit to steps they can take to improve relations.

Those attending the meeting included Gov. John Bel Edwards of Louisiana and Mayor Chris Coleman of St. Paul, Minnesota, the two locations where police shootings sparked protests around the country. Mayors from Los Angeles, Newark, New Jersey, and Anaheim, California, also attended. From the administration, Attorney General Loretta Lynch joined the president.

“At a time when our country, when we are talking past each other, the president’s convening allowed us to hear one another,” said Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti.

Also on the list were Mica Grimm, with Black Lives Matter Minnesota, and DeRay Mckesson, who was arrested Saturday in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on a charge of obstructing a highway. Police said Mckesson “intentionally” placed himself in the road after protesters were repeatedly warned to remain on private property or the curb.

So goes “Night,” Elie Wiesel’s acclaimed account of his Holocaust experience, a horrifying book that, unfortunately, has some relevance today.

“Men to the left! Women to the right!” Wiesel remembered a camp guard saying.

“Eight words spoken quietly, indifferently, without emotion ... . Yet that was the moment when I parted from my mother.”

He recalls seeing his father weep, something he never thought possible.

Just days after Wiesel’s passing, and my own rereading of his book, USA Today ran a headline: “Women are rising in the West,” about Hillary Clinton’s pending coronation as presidential nominee of the Democratic Party.

But at what price, a woman president?

The milestone is one that has supposedly been a long time in coming, the ultimate symbol of gender equality. But can we ever have equality if we allow the most innocent

The line from “Night” that screams out for our attention is: “Babies! Yes, I saw it – saw it with my own eyes ... those children in the flames.”

There’s a poison in the cultural air we breathe, and pretending otherwise is what has gotten us into political scenarios with no good choices. Many people cite Clinton’s unfettered loyalty to Planned Parenthood, her promise of faithful leadership to it and its agenda. But Donald Trump, too, has extolled the good it does, showing his own unfamiliarity with the pro-life movement, the human rights issue of our time.

People talk with a desperate hope about their support for Donald Trump.

He will blow things up, they say. They are attracted to his impatience and anger with a dysfunctional political system. But is it destruction we need, or renewal? Is it death we need, or life?

Should we take a moment this summer to consider what looking away from death has meant in contemporary history?

Carly Fiorina, a former Republican presidential candidate, recently spoke at the Napa Institute about the current political scene. She pointed to the hope that is young people – millennials – who are more pro-life than their elders, but who might not necessarily identify themselves with the pro-life movement or cause. They won’t do so, she said, because “they get all this pushback.” These times – over four decades of legal abortion by judicial fiat, which has been doubled down on in recent weeks by the Supreme Court – call for honesty, bravery and clarity. People need to be fearless in proclaiming that unborn human life is still human life and to prioritize the issue – and do so with love and hope.

Living at a time of much confusion about human nature and our relationships with one another, hitting reset on the miserable politics of abortion could just bear fruit beyond abortion laws and reality. It just could be a watering that could give new life to

a whole host of other issues. Being welcoming rather than mandating sexual revolutionary values may just free us from the miserable politics and brutal experiences many women who feel they have no support to choose life know.

I was in the presence of Elie Wiesel just two months ago in New York City.

He reminded us of the evil that drove anti-Semitism, which caused the extermination of so many Jews and others. Today, we face a time where assisted suicide and abortion are presented as necessary – not even seen as evils, it seems, by so many in power. Consider that gone are the days when Clinton’s husband talked about abortion as something that ought to be “safe, legal and rare.”

You may not agree with everything you read here. You may feel quite fatigued by it. But in a culture where headlines every day involve terrorism or urban death, we need a new embrace of life.

Hoffman holds off Danta in Late Model feature STAFF REPORT

MORRIS – The season-long battle atop the Late Model points standings at Grundy County Speedway between Eddie Hoffman and Anthony Danta continued Friday night as Hoffman and Danta finished 1-2 in the 30-lap feature race.

Hoffman, starting from the sixth position, took the lead on Lap 10 and never relinquished it. Danta started eighth and moved into second on Lap 24, but couldn’t overtake Hoffman as the winner finished .397 seconds ahead.

by Billy Knippenberg and pole sitter James Gregait. Tony Scapelli Jr., Larry Schuler, John Nutley, Brandon Clubb and Boris Jurkovic rounded out the top 10.

Randy Weese captured the 25-lap Street Stock feature, with points leader John Senerchia taking second and Spencer Leake finishing third. Rounding out the top 10 were Tim Stewart, Mark Ross Jr., Rick Dawson, Bill Serviss, Christy Penrod, Cheryl Hryn and Alex Clubb.

In the 15-lap 4-Cylinder division, Michael Tobuch raced to victory, with

After not faring as well as he had hoped on Day 2 of last year’s Boys A finals, Jake Pluth shot a better round Wednesday than he did the day before and easily walked away with his first championship in that division.

The junior at Joliet Catholic Academy followed up on a 70 with a 68 to give him a two-day total of 138, which was good for a 28-stroke victory.

Brendon Wills put together rounds of 82 and 84 to give a 166 total, which was good for second place, while Tanner McClintock shot an 83 on Tuesday and a 90 on Wednesday to give him a 173 score, which assured him of third place.

Pluth was one of only four sophomores from nonqualifying teams to earn a spot at last year’s Class 2A state meet at Illinois State University’s Weibring Golf Club. He finished tied for 43rd place, and he trailed only seven others, who were also sophomores.

Brown won, followed by Jordan Caskey, Greg Meiste, Mike Harrold and Sydney Wonderling.

Pat Bruns then won the 20-lap Midget feature, with Austin Smith second and Bob Schreffler third. Rounding out the top 10 were Jordan Caskey, Doug Oriske, Taylor Fenske, Ray Seach, Eric Reibenstein, Erica Ensor and Rich Corsen.

In the 25-lap Street Stock feature, Stewart notched the victory, with Senerchia second and Cheryl Hryn was third. Penrod finished fourth, followed

He’s looking for bigger and better things this season and hopes that a strong finish to his summer tournament schedule will help him to achieve his goals.

“I’ve been playing well this summer,” Pluth said. “I’ve had a couple of tournaments where I didn’t do well, but I’m starting to get better as the year goes along. I’m getting ready for my school season coming up in the fall.

“I’ve gotten used to playing in tournaments again. Over the offseason, you sort of lose the feeling of tournaments,

but once you get back at it, you start improving. I used to get a little nervous at the beginning, but now I’m getting more confident and just playing better.

“I’ve played in a lot bigger tournaments this summer and have done really well in them, so that gives me a lot of confidence. I’m excited for this year’s state finals and want to see how well I can do. I’ll do my best and work hard, and we’ll see what happens.”

This year’s JPD division that had the most depth was Boys B, where the top three were one stroke apart head-

ing into Wednesday’s final round.

Plainfield South junior Parker Govern shot an 82 to take the first-day lead, and he finished with a 76 to give him a 158 total, which was good for a fivestroke triumph.

After firing an 83 on Tuesday, JCA sophomore Ryan Bell added an 80 for a 163 score, which was good for second.

Incoming Hilltoppers player Creighton Karner combined rounds of 84 and 92 to give him a 176 and a third-place finish.

Adam Simon shot an 85 on Wednesday to give him a 180, which tied him with Matt Misewicz, who fired an 88 on the final day. Nick Blazen put together rounds of 89 and 92 to finish with a 181, one stroke ahead of Brandyn Collins, who shot an 87 on Wednesday.

In the Girls B division, Summer Hawkins built on her one-stroke lead by shooting a 40 in the final round to finish with an 82, which was five strokes better than Amber Maddox.

And in the Boys C division, Luke Petrovic put together rounds of 38 and 41 to give him a 79, which won the title.

Carson Trax shot a 41 on Wednesday to finish with an 85, which was good for second place, one shot better than Daniel Bouck.

The games have been moved to Thursday, with Plainfield North visiting Plainfield Central at 11 a.m. and Joliet Catholic taking on Plainfield South at 1:30 p.m. at Lockport. The championship game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at Ed Flink Field. The regional winner will play next week in the eight-team state tournament.

One game involving an area school did get played Wednesday as Plainfield East dropped a 7-6 decision to Naperville Central in the Hinsdale South Regional semifinals. Frank Bryan drove in two runs for the Bengals (12-7), while Andy Hoffman delivered three of the six hits for coach Adam O’Reel’s team.

FLORENCE, Kentucky – The Joliet Slammers had plenty of representation but not much success in the Frontier League Y’All-Star Game on Wednesday night at the home of the Florence Freedom.

The Slammers’ Carter Bell, Marc Flores, Alfredo Rodriguez and Charlie White finished the night a combined 0 for 9 as the East fell to the West, 11-4.

The Washington Wild Things (2722) lead the East by percentage points over the Slammers (28-23) as the second half of the season gets rolling Friday night. The Slammers will host Florence (21-30) over the weekend at Silver Cross Field.

The East appeared to be in good shape in the Y’All-Star Game as it was nursing a 3-1 lead through 6½ innings. The only run for the West to that point came in the third inning against Slammers left-hander Spencer Medick, who allowed two hits and struck out one in his inning of work.

Quigley, Holmes continue to get job done VIEWS Dick Goss Of this and that, beginning with professional basketball: Joliet Catholic graduate Allie Quigley, who turned 30 this season and is still going strong, scored 13 points in Wednesday’s matinée at Allstate Arena, but it wasn’t enough as the Chicago Sky fell, 77-67, to the Los Angeles Sparks (19-1).

Quigley, the two-time defending WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year, hit 5 of 10 shots, including 3 of 6 from 3-point range. In Sunday’s 100-95 victory over the Phoenix Mercury, she scored a team-high 21 points on 9-of-17 shooting and had three rebounds and five assists. She also led the Sky (8-12) with 29 points in an 88-85 loss Friday to the New York Liberty.

For the season, Quigley’s average is up to 10.8 points, and she is shooting .503 from the field, .380 from 3-point range and .885 from the free-throw line.

Also on the pro basketball front, Lockport graduate Richaun Holmes has been impressive as he blocks shots with abandon and nails his free throws for the Philadelphia 76ers’ team in the NBA Summer League.

The power forward averaged more than five points a game last season as a rookie and is under contract for the upcoming season.

However, that does not guarantee a spot on the roster. The 76ers, while projecting as an NBA bottom feeder, are deep in front court talent. Holmes has proven he can play in the league and continues to improve, yet he is battling to keep his job.

Pro basketball is a tough, competitive life. However, Quigley and Holmes both have shown that heart and perseverance, along with a fair dose of talent, can overcome.

Brian Papa, who coached high school soccer for 38 years, the last 23 at Lincoln-Way East, and whose teams won more than 800 games, was scheduled to be at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles with his 13-year-old daughter, Natalie, on Wednesday night, sitting among the stars at the ESPY Awards.

Papa retired June 30 from teaching at Lincoln-Way East. This spring, he became the third high school coach in the country to win 800 games. He was at the ESPYs in connection with the “Making A Difference On AND Off The Field” program.

Papa was quoted in a news release.

“I was totally taken off guard. I never expected anything like this from anybody. I’m speechless.”

Papa learned of the surprise tickets in an email from U.S. Men’s National Team goalie Brad Guzan, a Providence graduate. The college football season is approaching, and one of our own continues to move up in the coaching world.

Providence graduate and former St. Francis head coach Mike Uremovich has returned to Northern Illinois, this time as the offensive coordinator, assistant head coach and running backs coach. Uremovich had two previous stints with the Huskies. He was the running backs coach and special teams coordinator in 2012 and a graduate assistant in 2001 and 2002.

He was the USF head coach from 2005 through 2011. The 2011 team won 10 games and scored the Saints’ first win over an NCAA Football championship Subdivision team when they beat Georgia State. The Saints also reached the NAIA playoffs for the first time in 24 years that season and won their first playoff game.

The last three seasons, Uremovich has been the offensive line coach at North Carolina State. The Wolfpack were strong offensively and made two bowl appearances in that time.

PROLA’S DEATH

The local sports community was

stunned and saddened this week to hear that former Joliet Township athletic director Don Prola had died Friday while on the golf course with his daughter, Andrea.

Prola, who was 66, played football for Ray Klootwyk at Joliet West and Jerry Yost at Joliet Junior College before completing his football career and undergraduate education at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia. That was shortly after the 1970 Marshall football plane crashed that killed 75 people, including 36 team members, nine coaches, 25 boosters and five crew members.

Prola and his wife, Peg, are Marshall graduates, and Andrea followed in their footsteps and played on the women’s golf team.

When Prola returned home after college, he coached for a while for Yost at JJC. I got to know him as the JT athletic director, and he always was great to deal with. It also was good to see him at some Joliet Township Athletic Boosters Nights of Champions.

We will miss him.

Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Blackburn-Giegerich-Sonntag Funeral Home. The funeral Mass is at 10 a.m. Friday at the Cathedral of St. Raymond.

But don’t forget about Royal, the other wideouts

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com Along with cornerback and outside linebacker, receiver had pretty good retention rate for the Bears this season, with eight receivers returning, seven of whom made a catch last season and the one who didn’t is the one everyone will be watching this summer, Kevin White. There’s experience and potential, but questions about health, which lead to a focus on the depth.

Three things to watch at the receiver position in training camp: White’s camp debut: No player will have more fanfare in camp than White, last year’s top pick who didn’t get to practice in 2005 in Bourbonnais.

All we saw was some running on the side before he underwent surgery to repair a stress fracture in his left leg. The first two practices will be exciting for sure, when Bears fans can see the size and speed in person, but the first padded practice is the important one, as it will be White’s first full-contact practice as an NFL player. He’s been 100 percent since late winter and looked the part in the spring – despite a few drops. We have four training camps to reference to have an idea of what we’ll see from Alshon Jeffery (his biggest story line is staying healthy). At receiver, this camp will be all about White, his

rapport with quarterback Jay Cutler and his role in the offense. White will have days in Bourbonnais when he’ll put on a show.

Royal’s return: Eddie Royal tore up the Olivet Nazarene turf last summer, picking up where he left off in the 2015 OTAs and minicamp when he quickly re-established a fine connection with Cutler. When the season began, however, we didn’t see the same effectiveness from Royal, and then injuries derailed his first season with the Bears. He might be the oldest receiver on the team, but he’s only 30, when wideouts tend to get better, and he’s two seasons removed from 778 yards and seven scores.

The White-Jeffery tandem will be fun to watch, but it also opens up coverage on Royal, who can begin that return to being a key part of the offense – and a reminder of what he can bring to the offense – in training camp.

No. 4/5 WR battle: With Marquess Wilson sidelined because of a foot injury, there’s a spot open to be the No. 4 receiver, and then a stiff competition will form to be the final wideout(s) on the roster. Marc Mariani was clutch last season, putting up career-high receiving stats. Josh Bellamy is a special teams standout who had a good spring. Deonte Thompson has a speed element that makes him a factor. Cameron Meredith has good size for the outside. Then there’s rookie Daniel Braverman, who was incredibly productive in college. The return competition will help sort this out, but the Bears have options here, and it’s an important competition to monitor considering the injury histories of the top three pass-catchers.

Enough Olympic talk: It’s time for the British Open

TROON, Scotland – Jordan Spieth, going for the third leg of the career Grand Slam, spent more time talking about a golf course he never will see.

The majority of his news conference was taken up with questions about the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and why he chose not to play. Spieth knew that was coming. It was only when he was leaving the room that the 22-year-old Texan smiled and said to no one in particular, “Do we have a tournament this week?”

Finally, yes.

Colin Montgomerie, who lived across the street from Royal Troon when his father was the club secretary, hits the first tee shot when the British Open begins Thursday. That should put to rest three days of consternation about another tournament – the Olympics – that doesn’t have nearly the history or the tradition of golf’s oldest championship.

The International Golf Federation, run by former R&A chief Peter Dawson, took over Open week Monday to announce that Olympic qualifying had

The next day, Spieth stood by his decision (“health concerns”) and said his goal would be to get to the Tokyo Games in 2020, assuming the men are

still in the games. McIlroy followed him into the room and blasted golf officials who for the last seven years have preached the Olympics as an opportunity to grow the game.

“I didn’t get into golf to grow the game,” McIlroy said. “I got into golf

to win championships, and win major championships.”

Even on Wednesday, the day before the 145th Open began, another press conference was held with the IGF backdrop to announce Britain’s golf team.

Claret jug, anyone?

Spieth let it slip through his fingers last year at St. Andrews going for his third straight major, and he wound up holding it later that evening – but only because he was with Zach Johnson, the champion golfer of the year, when it was over.

“I crave to have that trophy in my possession at some point,” Spieth said.

“And to reach a third leg of the Grand Slam this week would be a fantastic achievement.”

History is on his side, even if it’s more of a coincidence. The last six British Open champions at Royal Troon dating to 1950 are Americans, and it didn’t escape Spieth when he looked at photos of the winners in the clubhouse.

The last two winners, Todd Hamilton and Justin Leonard, lived in Dallas.

Spieth arrived on the weekend and already saw the unpredictable nature of these Ayrshire links off the Irish Sea.

Thinking about a career in aviation? The field is booming but there’s a chance you didn’t know it.

That’s because, said Eric Jones, department chair and assistant professor of aviation and transportation at Lewis University, those employment opportunities “are really being undersold.”

The 2015 Boeing Pilot and Technical Outlook forecasts that between now and 2034, the aviation industry will need to supply more than one million new aviation personnel—558,000 commercial airline pilots and 609,000 maintenance technicians.

“There’s a lot of opportunity for young people to get involved in aviation,” Jones said.

And while Lewis University’s aviation maintenance technology degree has a more than 100 percent hiring rate he said it’s also “probably the most undersold degree we have.”

“Most of the students that graduate from the program have a job waiting for them,” he

said. “The airlines are digging as far down to sophomore year of college to sign them as employees. It’s kind of like a college coach recruiting an eighth grader to be a basketball player at his college. The demand is just that high.”

But the aviation field often comes up short to other career paths.

“There are a lot of people growing up and spending a lot of time on the computer and see that as the next pathway to success and wealth,” Jones said. “And you’re always going to have people who want to be doctors and lawyers. But there’s an adventure component to aviation that many professions lack.”

And it’s not just pilots that are needed.

Maintenance technicians are also in high demand.

“What’s being ignored is the technology side and the excitement that surrounds those jobs,” Jones said. “Somebody has to operate, repair and fix all these new technologies. I’ve repaired airplanes at the South Pole. I’ve done test flights over Mount St. Helens. The career is incredibly exciting and incredibly dynamic.

People that aren’t normally considering aviation maintenance or technology as a field should really be looking at it.”

Tom Brady will miss the first four games of the upcoming NFL schedule.

Unless he doesn’t.

“Deflategate” has crept into a third NFL season, and with the federal court’s rejection on Wednesday of the New England quarterback’s appeal of his suspension, it certainly appears that Brady will be sidelined into early October.

Brady still has the option of taking his case to the Supreme Court – one legal analyst called that nothing more than a “Hail Mary” – and getting the suspension for his role in the use of underinflated footballs in the 2014 AFC

title game overturned or stayed. Given how aggressively Brady, the NFL Players Association and all the lawyers involved have pursued the case, trying to get the Supreme Court to hear it could be the next step.

Meanwhile, it’s up to the Patriots to figure out the best approach to opening the season at formidable Arizona before a homestand against Miami, Houston and Buffalo.

One thing for sure: Super-secretive New England won’t be giving out any hints.

Among the Patriots’ biggest dilemmas is how to split reps and game time in the preseason. Normally, Brady would take a huge number of reps, but would play sporadically in the exhibi-

tion matches. Jimmy Garoppolo would get the majority of the game snaps.

Now? New England’s coaches must get Garoppolo prepared for his most significant pro action. Yet offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels must be careful not to get in the way of Brady’s prep.

While Brady is among the most accomplished winners in sports, and no one knows his craft better than the four-time Super Bowl champion, this is uncharted territory for him. Staying sharp when you are barred from any interactions with your team for a month is a huge challenge even for Brady.

backups and rookies whenever that occurs on the practice field. Sort of like Leonardo DiCaprio doing a cartoon.

The Patriots also must begin considering their overall quarterback situation. Rookie Jacoby Brissett would be the only backup to the untested Garoppolo, hardly an ideal situation for anything except a rebuilding team.

So bringing in a veteran QB for at least the four games Brady will miss makes some sense.

Except, of course, how does that quarterback get any practice reps in light of the urgency of preparing Garoppolo and keeping Brady somewhat sharp? He doesn’t. So finding someone willing to be nothing more than a camp body would be the Patriots’ chore.

‘I could do nothing without God’ Homeless man depends on others, witnesses to the love of Jesus Christ

JOLIET – Steve Sherwood is a familiar figure on Joliet’s West Side.

Homeless for 15 years, Sherwood travels by bicycle, one that resembles a minicaravan. It has two cargo trailers onto which hang all his earthly belongings, as well as symbols of his patriotic and religious beliefs.

Hanging out in a pouch across Sherwood’s waist are two dogs: Misty and Mindy, the latter a homeless dog Sherwood is keeping until he can find her owner.

Both dogs are happy and friendly.

And both are well fed, Sherwood said.

“They come first. They always come first. They’re just like children.

You don’t eat if your child is hungry.

Even with this one,” he said as he nodded to Misty. “I didn’t realize that her tag expired by a week. I was out of my medicine for my high blood pressure, but I took the money and got her shots and just waited until I could get my medicine.”

Sherwood isn’t employed and subsists on the help people give him, including food and drink. He cleans up in restrooms with baby wipes and takes the occasional shower when friends open up their homes to him.

“I could do nothing without God and without God’s children’s helping me,” Sherwood said.

With the money people give him, Sherwood said, he has bought medicine and clothing for people, and diapers for kids. He has helped those struggling to pay their bills. He has assisted others who are homeless, the ones the community doesn’t see.

Sherwood said he has been the first on the scene at traffic crashes or when people have had heart attacks. Mostly, Sherwood said, he talks to people about the tremendous love Jesus has for them and tries to encourage them through life’s hardships.

“I wish I could do more,” Sherwood said. “But I’m not wrapped up with any big organization that provides.

So anything I do comes from others – which I never ask for. I’m not out panhandling or anything like that. I just use whatever God provides and try to make do with that.”

Sherwood said he was born in Chicago, but grew up in Channahon. He eventually moved to St. Louis because he had relatives there, but was living in Braidwood at the time of his di-

vorce, which Sherwood said led to having tax trouble with the Internal Revenue Service and – ultimately – his homelessness.

“I didn’t see it on the radar,” Sherwood said. “I prayed and asked God where I could better serve him and others. And it wasn’t long after that – with life situations – that I ended up on the street.”

At first, Sherwood didn’t understand. As a young boy, he had gone to church. As an adult, he said he strayed from his faith. But at age 36, circum-

stances brought him to his knees – and to the God who loved him.

“And he’s been with me ever since,” Sherwood said.

Sherwood said he did some preaching in small churches when he lived in Missouri. During his first year without a home, Sherwood said, his prayer was, “God, what are you doing?”

“Then I realized there are so many people out on the street and so many people in the public arena I could witness to and be able to help,” Sherwood said. “Every day, it seems, people come up to me and ask if they could talk with me.”

Still, at age 54, living on the streets is harder on Sherwood’s body than it once was. The medicine he takes makes him sensitive to the sun, so he often seeks out shade. Instead of walking 20 miles a day, he now walks about 3 or 4. Sleeping in a tent is trickier, too, especially in winter.

When temperatures dipped far below zero in 2013 and early 2014, Sherwood said he got frostbite on five fingers. Last winter was especially difficult, Sherwood said, because he couldn’t get the blood to his fingers and toes.

“I don’t know if I’ll be here next winter, to be honest with you,” Sherwood said. “I might head down South for the winter and come back when it’s a little more tolerable. I’m not really sure. I just take it one day at a time.

happens, I’m sure.”

Living on prayer

The opinions of others don’t bother Sherwood, even though it’s disheartening to give his meal away to a hungry person in one moment, and get insulted by a passer-by in the next. That’s one reason why Sherwood steers clear of public aid.

“Sometimes, people are judgmental,” he said.

And, sometimes, Sherwood is the one who needs a spiritual boost – which, he said, God always delivers.

He recalled meeting a man who had been on the streets for two weeks after losing his job. Sherwood suggested the man pray every day and night, and Sherwood promised to do likewise.

One day, when Sherwood was “having a down moment,” Sherwood asked God to show him that his work made a difference. Sherwood said he sat behind a drug store after that prayer and that man he recently connected with walked by. The man was a little bewildered how he had ended up near the drug store, since it was out of his way.

Sherwood said the man shared with him that he had a job and an apartment. He rejoiced with him, and then told the man how God had answered Sherwood’s prayer through him.

He has not seen that man since.

“But may God bless him,” Sherwood said. “Hopefully, he’ll keep the faith.”

Mowry was born July 11, 1987, to Joan and Keith, and was baptized on Oct. 25 of the same year. After a few years in Elmhurst and a move to the Washington, D.C., area, his family returned to Illinois and settled in Glen Ellyn.

He attended parochial school at his home parish of St. Petronille and graduated from there in 2001. He began to discern a call to priesthood in his junior year at Glenbard West High School and, in the fall of 2005, he entered St. John Vianney College Seminary at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Mowry graduated from the University of St. Thomas in 2009, and entered Mundelein Seminary that fall. He was ordained to the diaconate on June 2, 2012, and served as a deacon at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Addison.

His ordination to the priesthood came on May 18, 2013, and in June of that year he began his assign-

Dear Reader: On average, women do live about five years longer than men. In the United States, 57 percent of all who are ages 65 and older are female. By age 85, 67 percent are women. You can see this for yourself in most nursing homes or assisted living facilities in the United States: Women usually outnumber men, and the magnitude of the difference often is striking.

The ratio of men to women is roughly equal in young adulthood. So why does the ratio start to favor women over time? Among the most powerful factors are men tend to: • Take bigger risks. The part of the brain that controls judgment and consideration of an action’s consequences develops more slowly in boys and young men than in their female counterparts. This likely contributes to the fact far more boys and men die in accidents or due to violence. This tendency toward lack of judgment and consideration of consequences also might contribute to harmful lifestyle decisions among young men. Smoking or drinking to excess are two examples.

• Have more dangerous jobs. Men far outnumber women in some of the riskiest occupations. These include military combat, firefighting and working at construction sites.

• Die of heart disease more often and at a younger age. Men are 50 percent more likely than women to die of heart disease, although women start dying more frequently of heart disease after they reach their mid-60s.

• Commit suicide more often than women.

Depression is considered more common among women, and depression does cause some people to attempt suicide. Men are less likely to seek care for depression and

But today’s article features Unusual versus Unusual. Your partner opens one of a major, and the next player overcalls two no-trump, the Unusual No-trump showing at least 5-5 in the minors. Then, it would be foolish for the responder’s bids of three clubs and three diamonds to be natural. Instead, many pairs play that a three-club cue-bid keys to hearts and three diamonds to spades. If partner opened one heart, three clubs promises at least game-invitational values in hearts. (Instead, a three-heart response shows the values for a single raise.) Also, three diamonds indicates at least game-forcing values with five-plus spades. (Instead, a threespade response is game-invitational but nonforcing.)

This worked very well in today’s deal. North’s three-club response showed game-forcing values with five or more hearts. Then, after South jumped to game, North, buoyed by the double fit in the majors, used Blackwood before signing off in six hearts. After West led the diamond king, what did declarer do?

South had no trouble taking 12 tricks. He won the first trick with dummy’s diamond ace, drew trumps, ran the spades (including a finesse of his nine against East’s 10), discarding two diamonds from the board, and conceded one trick to the club ace.

Note that six hearts by North fails if East leads a spade, and six spades

by South goes down if West leads a diamond.
