JOLIET – Environmental groups that successfully opposed the Illiana Expressway are giving conditional support to the proposed Houbolt Road bridge.

Gov. Bruce Rauner was in Joliet on Monday to announce the plan for a $190 million bridge with interchange improvements that would be funded primarily by CenterPoint Properties.

Openlands and Sierra Club issued a joint statement within hours after the governor’s announcement saying they welcomed the bridge project.

Representatives from both groups said the bridge is a good idea in so far as it directs traffic to the north and west, away from the Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie in Wilmington and Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood.

But there are still reservations.

“I would not say we support the bridge project yet,” Jack Darin, director of the Sierra Club, Illinois Chapter, said Tuesday.

kschott@shawmedia.com Three local lawmakers have been appointed to the bipartisan Illinois School Funding Reform Commission announced Tuesday by Gov. Bruce Rauner.

State Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, D-Shorewood, and state Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, along with state Rep. Emily McAsey, Jennifer BerD-Lockport, were named to tino-Tarrant the commission. The new panel is charged with creating more equitable funding formula for the school year that starts in August 2017, according to a news release from the governor’s office.

Bertino-Tarrant, who was regional superintendent of schools for Will County before being elected to the state Senate, said the topic is “very near and dear to me.”

The tolls, however, would pay CenterPoint’s costs, estimated at $150 million to $170 million to build the bridge. The state plans to spend $21 million to widen Houbolt Road and upgrade the I-80 interchange.

CenterPoint said it still is doing a feasibility study on the bridge, which would connect the CenterPoint Intermodal Center with I-80.

In the meantime, environmental groups would like to see the Houbolt Road bridge become the final nail in the coffin of the imperiled Illiana Expressway plan, another public-private venture but one that Rauner has refused to fund.

John Greuling, CEO of the Will County Center for Economic Development, said the county still needs the Illiana.

The Houbolt Road bridge, Greuling said, “doesn’t serve the same purpose. It provides access to the intermodal center.

The Illiana is a bypass for freight traffic.

They’re two totally different projects. ...

The Houbolt Road bridge does not address through traffic.”

Area lawmakers appointed to commission on school funding

“We want to make sure it’s not moving the problem from one area to another.”

Neither group is opposed to a bridge that would move truck traffic to a rebuilt Interstate 80 interchange in Joliet. But they said they want to make sure that’s what the bridge does.

“It’s a great step, but it’s not everything we need,” said Stacy Meyers, staff attorney for Openlands. “We don’t want haphazard infrastructure that directs trucks all over the place.”

Meyers said the groups are looking for a comprehensive plan that would ensure trucks are moving north to I-80 and west to I-55.

That could include restrictions on where else trucks could go. But such restrictions were not part of the plan announced Monday.

Rauner even mentioned the need to be wary of putting tolls so high on the bridge that trucks avoid it.

“I have a lot of trucking friends,” Rauner said. “They don’t like to pay tolls. We’re going to have to keep the tolls modest.”

But she also noted that she hopes substantive action is a result of the commission.

“They are always well-intended,” she said of such commissions. “I’m grateful to be a part of it, and really do hope something concrete Sue Rezin can come out of it.”

Rezin called the state’s education funding formula “flawed and in need of serious reform,” and said she is looking forward to working with colleagues from both sides of the aisle and the Emily administration toward a McAsey solution.

“We need to work together to craft a solution that makes the state’s funding formula work well and makes every student a priority,” Rezin said in a statement issued by her office.

The commission’s sole task is to recommend a comprehensive solution to reform Illinois’ school funding formula. The report is due to the governor and General Assembly by Feb. 1, 2017, in order for the General Assembly to take action in the 2017 General Session, according to the governor’s news release.

The commission will be composed of five designees each from the administration and each of the legislative leaders.

Rauner’s appointees are Beth Purvis, Secretary of Education; Lt. Gov. Evelyn Sanguinetti; James Dimas, Secretary of the Department of Human Services; Jennifer Hammer, Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy; and Jodi Scott, Regional Superintendent of Schools for Henderson, Knox, Mercer and Warren counties.

Illinois State Board of Education Chairman Rev. James Meeks will serve as a liaison between ISBE and the commission, according to the news release.

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – It’s billed as “The Battle of the Sexes.” It’s boys against girls.

But for softball players, the game at Silver Cross Field on Tuesday night showed they have a game, too.

And, it’s not so easy – or soft.

The Chicago Bandits professional fast-pitch women’s softball team came to Joliet for their annual exhibition game against the Slammers.

As usual, the Bandits won. The score was 4-2.

“It’s definitely hard for them,” Bandits outfielder Emily Allard said before the game, pointing out differences between softball and baseball and what the Slammers would face through the evening.

“They haven’t seen the angle of the pitching, the trajectory of the

ball. It’s a smaller field,” Allard said.

“It’s a faster game than they’re used to.”

Faster?

Maybe the best example of the night came in the fifth inning when Sammie Marshall of the Bandits hit what looked like a single that could be stretched into a double to right field.

Marshall kept running and stretched it into an inside-the-park home run.

The girls went wild.

The stands behind the Bandits dugout were filled with girls from local softball teams who definitely were siding with their gender, not rooting for the locals.

Allard and her teammates talked about the opportunity to promote their sport.

But for many of the fans, it was “The Battle of the Sexes.”

Keeli Pumphrey of Mazon had a

simple answer when asked what she wanted to see at the game: “The girls win.”

So did her grandmother, Tina Sereno of Mazon: “The girls beat the boys.”

They were at the game with the Dwight Rebels 10 and Under Travel Team.

“I think people don’t give the girls enough credit,” Sereno said. “Most people cater to the men and not so much the girls as far as their skills and abilities.”

But not Tuesday night.

Pre-game activities included a softball clinic. Bandits players offered tips and instruction in the sport.

Allard said the pre-game time spent with young girls learning softball was one of the nice parts of playing these exhibition games with minor league baseball teams.

“We do it for fun, and for the little girls to see what it’s like to play the boys,” she said.

The Slammers had no reason to be embarrassed. The Bandits are a National Pro Fastpitch team. In their sport, they are in the major leagues.

Rookie Kristen Brown hopes to see the sport someday get a piece of the attention given Major League Baseball.

“It’s growing and getting bigger, and I’m glad to be a part of it,” Brown said. “We do it for the love of the game, and we all love being around each other.”

Softball already has come a long way since Debbie Ashley of Channahon played the game in high school in the 1990s.

DALLAS – President Barack Obama urged Americans rattled by a week of violence and protests to find “open hearts” and new empathy Tuesday in a speech that seesawed between honoring police officers for their bravery and decrying racial prejudice that can affect their work.

Obama stood next to five empty chairs for the white police officers killed last week by a black man seeking vengeance for police killings. Behind him, underscoring his message of unity: Dallas police officers, a racially diverse church choir and local officials who ranged from black Police Chief David Brown to former President George W. Obama sought to reassure the nation that he understands the impact of the unsettling events of the past week – including the killing of two black men by white police officers as well as

the Dallas attacks.

Disturbing videos of the events have “left us wounded and angry and hurt,” he said.

“It is as if the deepest fault lines of our democracy have suddenly been exposed, perhaps even widened.”

Undaunted, the president urged Americans to cast aside such doubt and replace it with faith in the nation’s institutions and progress.

“Dallas, I’m here to say we must reject such despair. I’m here to insist that we are not as divided as we seem.

And I know that because I know America. I know how far we’ve come against impossible odds,” he said.

The president spoke steps away from the chairs left empty for the five men killed last Thursday while protecting hundreds of people protesting the killings of black men in Louisiana

and Minnesota. The Army veteran killed by police after the Dallas attack said he was motivated by revenge.

“The soul of our city was pierced,” Mayor Mike Rawlings said, as he welcomed the president and a line of public officials, including Bush, who attended with his wife, Laura, Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, and Brown. The group on stage capped the ceremony by holding hands and swaying to the “Battle Hymn of the Republic” – a symbol in sight and song of the service’s unity theme.

“Too often we judge other groups by their worst examples, while judging ourselves by our best intentions,” Bush said. “And this has strained our bonds of understanding and common purpose.”

Bob Wilson takes over fire protection district FRANKFORT – Frankfort’s new fire chief never wanted to be anything other than a firefighter.

Some firefighters lived near where he grew up in Crestwood and brought the truck to the block party. His uncle sometimes would let him visit the Hometown firehouse where he worked. He enjoyed watching the TV show “Emergency,” which started airing not long after his family moved to New Lenox. And when the Frankfort Fire Protection District started a cadet program in the 1980s, he was among the first to join.

So, naturally, Bob Wilson started his career working at an auto parts supplier for several years.

But he also got his paramedic license and tested at several local agencies. He applied three times to the Frankfort district before he was hired because some felt he had “an attitude problem,” he recently recalled.

Once he came on in 1990, Wilson was “a young guy who just wanted to

go to fires, but was advised to go for more training.” Wilson became a fire inspector, then moved into administrative roles. He served as Jim Grady’s assistant chief for 14 years until Grady retired last month and Wilson was promoted to the top spot.

“Chief Grady had been discussing his retirement for a few years and I’d been taking on and filling in on more and more of the administration,” Wilson said. “I’ve got the title, now I’m trying to find the groove.”

Wilson, who also serves as president of the Will County Fire Chiefs Association, wants the district to increase outreach to the public for home safety, especially for seniors.

“If people protect themselves against falls, it’s going to reduce the number of calls we have to go on, in the long run,” he said.

Wilson credits Grady with leading the district’s transition from volunteers to paid firefighters. He wants to have the agency receive professional accreditation during his administration and improve the district’s insurance ratings.

Board OKs rezoning property for Silver Cross Hospital: Surgery center needed to meet projected demand

fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Four of 58 acres New Lenox village officials agreed to rezone as a hospital district for Silver Cross Hospital will be used for an ambulatory surgical center.

It’s not known at this point what the rest of property, which is farmland, will be used for.

“We don’t have any plans as of right now. The most urgent need was for the ambulatory surgery center,” Silver Cross spokeswoman Tracy Simons said.

The surgical center is planned to be about 13,800 square feet with three operating rooms at an estimated cost of $11 million. The center will also have nine recovery rooms, clinical support space and nonclinical spaces, such as waiting and storage areas.

The New Lenox Village Board of Trustees on Monday approved the rezoning of the property – acquired by Silver Cross – as a hospital district, Village

Administrator Kurt Carroll said.

He said all trustees present voted in favor of the ordinance; Trustee David Butterfield was absent.

Silver Cross also is seeking approval from the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board for construction of the ambulatory surgery center. A hearing is set for Aug. 2.

Ruth Colby, Silver Cross’ senior vice president for business development and chief strategy officer, told New Lenox officials at a June 27 meeting that the hospital needs “more operating rooms in order to meet the demands of the community.”

According to the application sent in May to the state board, a total of 2,165 cases – or 3,489 surgical hours – have been committed to the surgery center in 2018 by physicians on staff at Silver Cross.

The 11 operating rooms at the hospital had a use rate of 119.3 percent in 2014, which jumped to 129.7 percent in 2015.

This year is on pace to hit a use rate of

138.5 percent, the application stated.

“The surgical projections for 2017, 2018 and 2019 are just as daunting and show that Silver Cross Hospital will need [19] operating rooms by 2019,” according to a narrative description of the project in the application.

Silver Cross has requested an expedited review of its application to the state board, which was granted. The request stated concerns about delays to meeting its anticipated March 31, 2018, completion date to build the surgical center.

Eye check ups at each age

By Diane Krieger Spivak Our vision is one of the most precious of the body’s senses, so it’s important to make eye exams a lifelong practice.

The American Optometric Association has set the following guidelines for recommended checkups at every age: Parents should take baby for his first eye exam by 6 months of age. The next exam should be by age 3 and again before first grade, then every two years thereafter until the age of 18. Of course, if a child’s vision is at-risk for any reason, checkups should be more frequent or at your ophthalmologist’s recommendation since additional testing or more frequent re-evaluation may be needed.

According to AOA factors placing an infant, toddler, or child at significant risk for visual impairment include: • Prematurity, low birth weight, oxygen at birth, grade III or IV intraventricular hemorrhage • Family history of retinoblastoma, congenital cataracts, or metabolic or genetic disease • Infection of mother during pregnancy (e.g., rubella, toxoplasmosis, venereal disease, herpes, cytomegalovirus, or AIDS)

• Difficult or assisted labor, which may be associated with fetal distress or low Apgar scores • High refractive error • Strabismus • Anisometropia • Known or suspected central nervous system dysfunction evidenced by developmental delay, cerebral palsy, dysmorphic features, seizures, or hydrocephalus Adults from age 18 to 60 should have an eye exam every two years, says the AOA. After the age of 60 vision checks should be done annually, or if at-risk, as recommended by your ophthalmologist.

At-risk patients include those: • With diabetes, hypertension, or a family history of ocular disease (e.g., glaucoma, macular degeneration) • Working in occupations that are highly demanding visually or eye hazardous • Taking prescription or nonprescription drugs with ocular side effects • Wearing contact lenses • Who have had eye surgery • With other health concerns or conditions.

Romeoville Toyota to break ground this fall

mmallory@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – The ownership group of the new Romeoville Toyota has received the go-ahead to break ground sometime this fall on its Weber Road dealership.

The nearly 47,000-square-foot building will be built on 5.8 acres at the southwest corner of Weber Road and Grand Haven Circle. It will include a showroom, sales area, service areas and office space.

Romeoville Mayor John Noak said the new dealership broadens the village’s marketplace and like most dealerships, will bring in great sales tax revenue proportionate to the size of the lot. He said there is still substantial space on Weber Road ready for development, and car dealerships can anchor a commercial corridor.

“Car dealerships tend to be generators of economic activity,” Noak said.

Romeoville trustees approved earlier this year an economic incentive agreement for the village’s first new car dealership, which will be owned and operated by Thomas Auto Group – the owners of Thomas Toyota on Larkin Avenue in Joliet. Under terms of the incentive deal, the new dealer-

The new dealership will be about 5 miles north of the existing Thomas Toyota in Joliet. Efforts by The Herald-News to reach Thomas Auto Group in the past have been unsuccessful and were again Tuesday.

It was news to Joliet officials when they learned in February that Thomas was moving to Romeoville via Noak’s State of the Village address. Joliet leaders had been discussing with Thomas for more than a year a sales tax incentive deal that would allow for expansion of the Larkin Avenue location.

James Haller, Joliet’s director of

community and economic development, said after the announcement of the move that Thomas Auto Group told Joliet during negotiations it was under pressure from at least one of the car manufacturers to expand or open a location closer to an interstate.

Days after the Romeoville news, Joliet learned the Nissan dealership will stay at the Larkin Avenue location.

Under terms of the Romeoville incentive agreement, the village will reimburse the dealership 70 percent of sales tax revenue collected for the first five years the business is operational in Romeoville.

During years six through 10, the sales tax rebate rate will be 60 percent.

Between the 10th and 30th years, the rate will fall to 50 percent. The total reimbursement amount will not exceed $8.2 million.

The Romeoville board has also previously approved a 10-year sponsorship rights deal with Romeoville Toyota that allows the dealership to sponsor an athletic field or court of its choice in the Edward Hospital Athletic and Events Center at 55 Phelps Ave. The village will collect a sponsorship fee of $50,000 to be paid in equal installments of $5,000 per year.

ROMEOVILLE – Much of the Romeoville Village Board meeting last week was spent reviewing several properties that could bring a combined investment of about $200 million to the village.

Romeoville Mayor John Noak said Monday that the village is incredibly busy, as officials reviewed 60,000 square feet of commercial space with a total investment of $21 million and 1.33 million square feet of industrial space with a total investment of $179 million.

“We’re a little past halfway through the year,” Noak said. “I think we may reach or exceed half a billion dollars in investment in one year, spread over a number of projects.”

The largest project reviewed last week requires the annexation of 77 acres to village limits for an 83-acre development on what is referred to by officials as the Lambrecht Property, located south of the intersection of Route 53 and Joliet Road.

“I would like to say yes,” Gronsky said. “However, softball and baseball are two different games. We all respect the challenge of softball.”

And the teenager, maybe the teenager will see in the police officer the same words, and values and authority of his parents.”

aschier@shawmedia.com A former Housing Authority of Joliet financial official admitted last week to stealing about $170,000 from the Chicago Housing Authority when she worked at that agency.

Charlene Potts, 45, of Richton Park, pleaded guilty Friday to felony theft in Cook County court, Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Lisa Gordon said.

Potts was sentenced to four years in prison.

Potts was working as chief financial officer for Joliet’s housing authority when she was charged in 2013, having been hired by the Joliet agency in 2010 as a temporary leasing agent and eventually promoted in 2011 to the financial officer role.

She was fired after her arrest.

At the Chicago Housing Authority, Potts processed payments to lenders, landlords and tenants between 2005 and 2008, and was accused of issuing about $170,000 in phony checks to her co-defendant, Scott Washington.

Washington, 51, of Park Forest, pleaded guilty Friday to felony financial institution fraud, Gordon said, and was sentenced to 30 months on probation and community service.

In addition, the money owed to the Chicago agency must be paid by Potts and Washington, Gordon said, and could be taken through wage and tax garnishments.

How do you treat arthritis in your feet?

The most common form of arthritis is osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative arthritis.

It affects about half of all arthritis sufferers.

When it strikes the feet, it can be particularly distressing. Although there is little soft tissue swelling, joints often become enlarged, stiff and painful. Anti-inflammatory drugs may be prescribed for the pain, and certain exercises can relieve some of the pressure by strengthening muscles around the joints.

Waling and rolling an empty soft drink bottle under the foot are often useful techniques.

Your doctor may also perform ultrasound or heat treatments. For more advanced, debilitating cases, surgery may be recommended to remove bony particles or replace the joint with an artificial implant.

P.S. Two people with similar joint degeneration can have totally different symptoms, such as intense pain or no pain at all.

OBITUARIES BERNARD ADAMS Born: July 15, 1944 Died: July 4, 2016

Bernard “Hersey” Adams was born on July 15, 1944 in Proctor, Arkansas. He was one of 13 children born to the union of Kelo and Idella Adams.

He departed this life on July 4, 2016, at West Markham Nursing Home in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Bernard moved to Joliet with the family in 1951, where he was educated in the public school system, graduating from Joliet Township High School in 1964. He spent several years in the U.S. Army, primarily stationed in Germany and received an honorable discharge. After returning home from service, Bernard held several jobs, including the local Steel Mill and later the city of Joliet.

Bernard resided in Hot Springs, Arkansas, for many years prior to his death.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Opal Smith; and two brothers, Tylo Adams and Lendell Adams.

He leaves to cherish his memory one daughter, Valerie (Alvin) Richardson of Jackson, MS; two sons, Eldridge Adams of Jackson, MS, and Quentin Adams of Little Rock, Arkansas; three grandchildren, Rajay, Jamari and Zaveion Richardson; five brothers, Burley (Dorothy), Stanley (Laura), Romney, all of Joliet; Jodell of Pittsburg, CA, and Carnell of Delray Beach, Florida; four sisters, Iola Chism and Gloria (David) Wiley of Joliet, Tamar McBride of Snellville, GA, and Magdalene Pierrott of Woodbridge, VA; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Jermain K. Bennett, born Oct. 27, 1973, to Joe and Lillie Bennett in Joliet.

Jermain confessed Christ at an early age. As a young entrepreneur, Jermain owned and operated PD’s Towing and KO Boxing Gym. Jermain attended Laraway Junior High and Joliet West High School and Devry College, majoring in auto mechanics.

His passions were racing, boxing and riding motorcycles.

Jermain departed this life suddenly on Sunday, July 3, 2016, at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center.

Jermain is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Ed and Lula Bennett; maternal grandparents, Eddie Scott and Mettie Heath;

Foecious B. Draine Jr. “Heavy,” born May 4, 1974, to Lynda and Foecious Draine Sr. He resided in Kankakee until his untimely passing on July 4, 2016.

Born in Joliet, where he attended Joliet public schools.

Foecious, aka Ryan by those closest to him, is preceded in death by both paternal and maternal grandparents; his father, Foecious Sr.; his mother, Lynda Draine; and brother, Kyle Bingham.

Born Jan. 9, 1931, in Jacksonville, Freida was a daughter of the late Lennie and Mabel (Thady) Sorrells. She was raised and educated through grade school in Jacksonville and graduated from Wilmington with the Class of 1949. Freida was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Wilmington and a charter member of the Island City Square Dancers. She will be remembered for her love of the Chicago Bulls and Cubs.

Survivors include four sons, David (Joanne) Geiss of Radford, VA, Doug “Al” Geiss of Coal City, Gary Geiss of Wilmington and Dean (Donna) Geiss of Braidwood; nine grandchildren, Eli (Brandi) Geiss, Graham (Robin) Geiss, Joel (Kari) Geiss, Julie (Josh) Woods, Andrew Geiss, Justin (Stacy) Geiss, Ashlee Geiss, Tyler Geiss and Cory Geiss; 12 great-grandchildren, Juliana, Isabelle, Evan, Emily, Dierks, Leah, Chesnee, Annamarie, Veronica, Conner, Abram and Edie; her friend and daughter-in-law, Teri Geiss of Wilmington; and sisters-in-law, Jan Sorrells of Portland, Oregon, and Margaret Geiss, Lois Geiss, Adela Geiss and Norma Geiss, all of Wilmington; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Kahler Road in Wilmington, on Thursday, July 14, 2016, between the hours of 4 and 8 p.m. Funeral services will follow Friday morning in the church at 10 a.m. with Revs. Tom Kingery, H. Jae Lee and Mi-Sook Yoo officiating.

Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Wilmington, where Freida will be laid to rest with her late husband, Orville. Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers will be her grandchildren.

Karl was founder and owner of Kurtz Memorial Chapels, Kurtz Ambulance Service and Goodale Memorial Chapel, proudly and compassionately serving the local area for 40 years. He was a graduate of Joliet Township High School, Worsham College of Mortuary Science and Certified Emergency Medical Technician – Intermediate. He was a member of Ridgewood Baptist Church, Illinois State Ambulance Association, Illinois Funeral Directors Association, National Funeral Directors Association, Will/Grundy EMS and Matteson Masonic Lodge 175, past member of East Joliet Fire Department. He was a former Will County deputy coroner and former New Lenox village trustee and patrolman for Knight Security, former member of New Lenox Chamber of Commerce and New Lenox Rotary Club. Karl was recipient of New Lenox Citizen of the Year in 2009, a local area volunteer and philanthropist supporting many civic and charitable organizations, and a diehard Cubs fan.

While his achievements were many, they were sadly cut short due to his advanced Parkinson’s disease. “Well done good and faithful servant.”

Blagojevich case: Judge mulls opposing portraits

The Associated Press CHICAGO – Federal prosecutors are asking a judge to order former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich to serve his entire 14-year prison term when he returns to court for resentencing next month. But his attorneys want about nine years lopped off the sentence of the man they say has been a model prisoner who’s tutored, taught and counseled fellow inmates while also forming an Elvis-inspired rock band.

The motions filed late Monday are part of a legal battle between federal prosecutors and the former governor’s attorneys over the sentence imposed in 2011 by U.S. District Judge James Zagel after a jury convicted Blagojevich of 18 corruption counts, including attempting to sell the vacant U.S. Senate seat once occupied by President Barack Obama. In March, several months after a federal appeals court panel tossed five of 18 counts against Blagojevich, prosecutors said they would not retry him on those counts and requested that he

CHICAGO – A Chicago police detective should not regain his job after he was fired over a photo

return to Zagel’s courtroom for resentencing.

Neither motion was surprising, as prosecutors argued that Blagojevich has never taken responsibility for his crime and the defense reiterating a long-held argument that the sentence was too long. But the 22-page defense motion does offer a glimpse into the life of a man who has not been seen or heard from since he reported to a Colorado federal prison in 2012.

Attorney Leonard Goodman writes that Blagojevich has been tutoring inmates studying for their GED, teaching history and providing job interview counseling for soon-to-be-released inmates. He talks almost daily to his family on the phone, quizzing his children to help them prepare for exams. Dozens of fellow inmates also have offered letters of support, including one prisoner who credits Blagojevich with helping him reconnect with his daughter. U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky of Illinois and Bob Barr, a former congressman from Georgia, were among those who submitted letters asking for leniency.

that made it appear he and another officer had hunted and killed an African-American man, an Illinois appellate court has ruled.

The court on Friday upheld the Chicago Police Board’s decision to fire Timothy McDermott for violating three department rules: bringing discredit on the department, disrespect of a person, and unnecessarily displaying a weapon, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

And in an effort to share in his youngest daughter’s interest in music, Blagojevich has studied guitar and vocals, Goodman said. Well known for his love of all things Elvis Presley – his lifesized statue of Presley was auctioned off after he went to prison – Blagojevich formed with another inmate a band called “The Jailhouse Rockers.”

In its own 14-page filing at midnight Monday, the U.S. attorney’s office said that “nothing in the dismissal of the five counts undermines the need for a very significant sentence ... to deter current and future public officials from engaging in similar criminal activity.”

They also said that Blagojevich has never taken responsibility for his crimes.

All of which sets up what will certainly be a huge media event in the same courthouse where the former governor was convicted of corruption: Blagojevich himself trying to persuade the judge to reduce his sentence.

Goodman said that Blagojevich will certainly address Zagel, but it has not yet been determined whether he will be

Zagel is not expected to significantly reduce one of the longest corruption sentences ever imposed in Illinois. Even in its ruling last year, the appeals court did not hint that the sentence should be reduced. In fact, it indicated that even without the tossed convictions the 14year sentence was appropriate. It also suggested that Zagel might have gone too easy on Blagojevich.

NATION BRIEFS 3 arrested in ‘credible threat’ to harm officers

BATON ROUGE, La. – Police arrested three suspects and were seeking a possible fourth suspect accused of stealing several handguns as part of what authorities Tuesday described as “substantial, credible threat” to harm police officers in the Baton Rouge area.

The arrests come at a time of heightened tensions after the deadly police shootings of black men in Baton Rouge and Minnesota and the killing of five police officers in Dallas last week.

Baton Rouge authorities discovered the alleged plot while responding to a burglary at a pawn shop early Saturday, Baton Rouge Police Chief Carl Dabadie said. The first suspect arrested told police that “the reason the burglary was being done was to harm police officers.”

AG Lynch defends Clinton email inquiry decision

WASHINGTON – Attorney General Loretta Lynch deflected a barrage of Republican questions Tuesday about her decision not to prosecute Hillary Clinton for her use of private email, saying it “would not be appropriate” to discuss the matter as the nation’s top law enforcement official.

GOP members of the House Judiciary Committee voiced frustration, with the panel’s chairman, Bob Goodlatte of

Virginia, telling Lynch her reticence was “an abdication of your responsibility.”

Lynch repeatedly referred the committee to last week’s testimony by FBI Director James Comey, who gave an unusually detailed account of the investigation in a nearly five-hour appearance before another House panel and described the rationale for his advice that no charges be brought.

Report: Paterno ignored boy’s Sandusky complaint

HARRISBURG, Pa. – Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, told by a teenage boy in 1976 that assistant coach Jerry Sandusky molested him in a shower, responded that he didn’t want to hear about it and had “a football season to worry about,” according to court documents unsealed Tuesday.

The boy, now a man identified as John Doe 150, said in 2014 that other boys in a shower heard him yell that Sandusky had just touched him sexually. He said he told several adults about it before seeking out Paterno.

Excerpts of the testimony were among dozens of documents made public Tuesday in Penn State’s fight with an insurance company over payments to Sandusky’s accusers. Sandusky was convicted in 2012 of dozens of child sexual abuse counts.

Sanders finally backs Clinton, calls her ‘far and away the best’

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. – With hugs and handshakes, Bernie Sanders endorsed Hillary Clinton for president Tuesday and emphatically told his supporters their “political revolution” must now turn to electing his Democratic former rival.

Sanders bestowed his long-awaited support before a boisterous New Hampshire crowd, declaring he wanted to make it “as clear as possible as to why I am endorsing Hillary Clinton.”

He congratulated her for securing enough delegates to win the Democratic nomination and vowed to do everything he could to help her defeat Republican candidate Donald Trump.

“This campaign is not really about Hillary Clinton, or Donald Trump or Bernie Sanders, or any other candidate who sought the presidency. This campaign is about the needs of the American people and addressing the very serious crises that we face,” Sanders said.

He added: “And there is no doubt in my mind that, as we head into November, Hillary Clinton is far and away the best candidate to do that.”

As Sanders delivered the endorsement just two weeks shy of the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, Clinton offered a huge smile, embracing him as they raised their arms in unity. The former secretary of state said the final four months of the campaign would be “much more enjoyable” working alongside Sanders and echoed her

campaign slogan, “We are stronger together.”

During much of her remarks, Clinton embraced many of Sanders’ causes, vowing to oppose trade deals such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership, fight to raise the federal minimum wage – adopting Sanders’ tone, she called it a “starvation wage” – and overhaul the campaign finance system.

“These aren’t just my fights. These are Bernie’s fights. These are America’s fights,” Clinton said.

Sanders has vowed to continue on until the convention; and even though he endorsed Clinton, he still is an active candidate, his campaign said after the joint appearance.

Spokesman Michael Briggs said Sanders still supports holding a roll call vote at the convention to determine the nomination.

Democrats have coalesced around Clinton’s candidacy since she defeated Sanders in primaries last month in California and five other states, helped along by endorsements from President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and others. In a high-profile rally last month, Clinton was embraced by Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a liberal stalwart popular with Sanders’ followers.

Sanders has spent the past month seeking to influence the party’s platform for the Philadelphia convention and promote electoral reforms including allowing independents to participate in future primaries. Ideas more important than loyalty to party SPRINGFIELD – I’ve never understood blind party loyalty.

To me, it’s much more important to identify with ideas rather than whether someone has a “D” or an “R” after their name.

Typically, I split my ballot between both Republicans and Democrats.

That may surprise some people, because I typically write about economic issues.

But I’m a fiscal conservative and a social moderate.

I believe in small, limited government. But I’m appalled by how conservative “get tough on crime” talk has resulted in the incarceration of millions of nonviolent individuals.

And while my faith is important to me, government shouldn’t impose any religion’s beliefs on society as a whole.

To be honest, I stand afraid when I see the party of Abraham Lincoln about to nominate a hateful, small-minded bigot to be its presidential nominee.

I hear some Republicans say they don’t support Donald Trump because they don’t believe he can win.

I’m just the opposite.

I don’t support Trump because I’m terrified that he may.

When I heard U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan was breaking a long silence and (reluctantly) supporting Trump, I cringed.

It brought to mind the relationship between Rod Blagojevich and Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan.

Madigan hinted broadly about unspecified Blagojevich “indiscretions” when he first ran for governor. And after giving Blagojevich free rein for his first year in office, he formed a coalition of

But then Madigan co-chaired Blagojevich’s re-election campaign even though he faced an honorable, moderate Republican, Judy Baar Topinka.

And shortly after Blagojevich won re-election, Madigan led the charge to impeach him – in part for things that were known publicly when he co-chaired his campaign.

For Madigan, party loyalty trumped the needs of the state.

Ryan is making the same mistake. He is putting his loyalty to the Republican Party ahead of the needs of our nation.

The Democrats are nominating a woman I just don’t agree with on the issues.

And the Republicans are putting forward a bully, who aspires to be a demagogue.

This nation doesn’t need a Mussolini-lite.

Neither Clinton nor Trump will get my vote.

I’m tired of having to choose the lesser of two evils.

But I won’t stay home in November. I’ll vote for a third-party candidate.

And, no, I’m not foolish enough to think Libertarian Gary Johnson will win.

But at least I will have voted for someone I agree with on most of the issues.

Isn’t that what democracy is supposed to be about?

Honoring the Dallas officers

President Barack Obama addressed an interfaith memorial service Tuesday in Dallas for the five police officers – Lorne Ahrens, Patrick Zamarripa, Michael Krol, Michael Smith and Brent Thompson – who were killed in a terrible ambush in that city early Thursday.

Obama noted that last week’s violence seemed to expose “the deepest fault lines of our democracy,” while also insisting the nation is not as divided as it seems. He called on all of us to find common ground in support of racial equity and justice.

It’s understandable that, after last week, that could seem like an unattainable request.

The videos the public saw last week on the TV news and on the internet were jarring glimpses of men in their last moments. Both incidents remain under investigation; still, many saw the footage and concluded that Alton Sterling and Philando Castile had been killed unnecessarily by police in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Falcon Heights, Minnesota.

Even among those who came to that conclusion, who seethe with anger at what they believe is systemic injustice toward poor people in minority communities, most are horrified at the acts of the lone black gunman who told police he wanted to kill white cops – and proceeded to do so.

Nearly all of us recognize that police and the jobs they do on a daily basis are essential to our communities. Our safety and security are due in large part to our local law enforce-

ment officers, who assume the often-dangerous burden of keeping the peace.

The system and its agents, including police, should not be presumed to be beyond reproach. Complaints about police tactics should not be brushed off as mere political correctness, or people looking to make excuses for criminal behavior.

But a few bad apples does not justify a “war on cops.” Rhetoric that stirs the sort of violence against police that shocked the nation last week is toxic. Police are there to help, a fact realized clearly by many of the protesters in Dallas on Thursday.

Dallas police had not shot and killed anyone this year at the time of the attack.

The protest had been peaceful. During the ambush, you saw officers help the wounded and protect those who were seeking shelter, while also trying to find the source of the bullets flying through the air to stop the threat.

There has been in the last week recognition of the sacrifices police officers make: As Obama noted Tuesday in his speech, “We ask police to do too much and we ask too little of ourselves.”

Many people have come forward to show support for the Dallas police and their local officers in the aftermath of this tragedy, with blue ribbons, meals, hugs and other expressions of gratitude.

We support the police as well, and the dedication it takes to fulfill their everyday mission to serve and protect their fellow citizens.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – While Parker Govern was pleased to hold a slight lead for the top spot in the Boys B Division of Tuesday’s opening round of the Joliet Park District Junior Tournament, he had a good excuse for why his play wasn’t a bit better.

And that was because his 18-hole jaunt at Inwood Golf Course was nothing compared with the five rounds of nine-hole match play matches he battled through the previous day at the iTour competition at The Links at Carillon, where he wound up going 4-1 and claiming ninth place in that 28-man event.

Govern, who will be a junior at Plainfield South, leads the biggest and closest of the five divisions in the twoday event after shooting an 82, which gave him a one-stroke lead over Ryan Bell and a two-shot advantage over Creighton Karner.

“My feet hurt, but I knew that I could deal with it,” Govern said. “After yesterday, I was dead tired. My feet still hurt, but I know that I have to go again tomorrow. But I can deal with it since any golf is good golf. And having to play golf is a good problem.

“Yesterday, I felt great – probably the best that I’ve felt all summer. I just had a bad match. Today, I came out and started real good and had one bad hole on the front. When I got to the back, I

knew where I stood, and I was playing well, but I blew up on a couple of holes, and I kind of fell apart. But I got back in it, and I’m one shot up, and I feel good again.”

After qualifying for sectionals a year ago as a sophomore for the Cougars, Govern is hoping that he can take the next step this fall by reaching the state tournament.

“I’ve been able to control my irons, and I worked a lot on distance control over the winter,” Govern said. “My distance has improved in general, and I can hit my irons where I want to, and that’s what’s saving me now. This winter, I got a coach, Scott Hogan, who runs Golf 4 Groups in Crest Hill. That’s what’s probably pushed me to the level that I’m at now.

“Last year, I got to sectionals, but I was nervous since I knew that not many sophomores get to sectionals or to state.

I didn’t have expectations to go to state last year, but my game has advanced so much since then, so I want to get back there – and getting to state is the ultimate goal. So I’m practicing every day,

Luke Kramer had a run-scoring single and two-run double in the inning, and Chase Jamison, Peplow and Doyle singled in runs.

“What are you going to do? Sometimes, you have days like that,” said North coach John Darlington, whose team will face Plainfield Central in Wednesday’s 4:30 p.m. semifinal. “We hit the ball well, we hit ’em where they ain’t, and our kid [Peplow] pitched well.”

Peplow finished with three of the Tigers’ 17 hits. Steinbach, Doyle, Diorio, Kramer and Jamison chipped in two each. Darlington sent up a parade of pinch-hitters in the fifth and final inning, and four of six hit safely.

Peplow did the rest on the mound, although as he noted, “It wasn’t easy.”

He was referring to having warmed up and being ready to go, then having to wait through the long inning before taking the mound.

“I had to keep warming up – it was hot today – I had to battle through it,” he said. “I still had a job to do. I had to go out there and act like the score was 0-0.”

“Connor is a great pitcher and a good two-way player,” Steinbach said. “He’s a good contact hitter and a good center fielder when he’s not pitching.”

Things already seem to be well in hand for the first-round leaders in the Boys A and Girls A divisions. Jake Pluth shot a 70 to grab a 12-stroke lead in the top boys division, while Maddy Palmer fired a 76 to go into Wednesday’s final round with a 10-stroke advantage.

But there’s also only a one-stroke difference between the leaders in the other divisions.

In the Girls B Division, Summer Hawkins fired a 42 to edge Amber Maddox for the early lead in that competition. And in the Boys C Division, Luke Petrovic shot a 38 to lead Daniel Bouck by one stroke, while Carson Trax was third with a 44 total.

The battle in the Boys A Division looks as if will it be for second place.

Brendon Wills shot an 82 to grab a onestroke lead over Tanner McClintock.

In the Girls A Division, Madison Erickson had the second-best round, an 86, while Emily Staples was third with a 96 and Mia Erickson stood fourth after shooting a 103.

Laczynski opened the bottom of the first with a single; Jon Butler hit into a forceout; and after a wild pitch and passed ball, Logan O’Brien reached on an error as the Indians’ only run scored.

O’Brien’s two-out single in the third inning was the other hit.

With Brady Corrigan the returning ace, Peplow likely will slide into the

No. 2 slot in the starting rotation next spring. Even with a new cast, the Tigers could be formidable.

“We have a lot to replace, but we have some talent coming up,” Peplow said. “We got our first state trophy in the spring. That was big for our program. We hope to get back there and win it.”

For Minooka, which used six pitchers, it was a forgettable end to a good summer season.

“We had a nice summer,” Indians coach Jeff Petrovic said. “We played well for the most part. This was the first time we laid an egg, and it was a bad time to do it, against a really good team.

“Our pitchers had a tough time finding the zone, and when we did, we had a tough time throwing quality strikes.

We threw it right over the plate, they hit it hard, and we didn’t catch it well, either.”

Not that bad games can’t happen at any time in baseball, but Petrovic said the summer – when most teams usually have key players missing because of commitments to travel ball and other sports – is different.

“The kids lack some of the motivation in the summer that they have in the spring season,” he said. “They are tied more to their travel teams in the summer.”

“The mental part is the big difference for me after a year of college. I’m more aggressive now. I’m 20 yards longer, and that helps, too. Definitely, accuracy is the big thing to work on now. My putter has been pretty consistent.”

of my season. I had two 69s, and a 69 there felt like a 65 anywhere else.”

Looking ahead, Loyola will host next spring’s MVC Tournament on April 24 to 25. The venue where Wal-

lace will attempt to defend his title will be Dubsdread at Cog Hill.

Despite being a freshman, Wallace played No. 1 for the Redbirds all last season, posting a scoring average of

72.9.

“My highest round was 79,” he said. “Never going over 80 was one of my goals.

“My goals for my sophomore year are to beat my scoring average and for us to win conference as a team.

We’re pretty good. My teammate, Zach Burry, who is from Quincy, won the Joliet Amateur this year.”

Wallace said a year of college golf has helped the mental side of his game.

“The mental part is the big difference for me after a year of college,” he said. “I’m more aggressive now.

I’m 20 yards longer, and that helps, too.

“Definitely, accuracy is the big thing to work on now. My putter has been pretty consistent.”

Playing collegiately, of course, does demand adjustments.

“The thing about college golf is there are a lot of 12-hour days,” he said. “You travel a lot, miss school two days a week.”

Yet, his classroom work as a freshman was better than ever.

“I’m a business management major,” he said. “I had a 3.0 average, which I am happy with. It’s better than I did in high school.”

Even with the Illinois State Amateur and Illinois Open coming up, Wallace said he is not pushing the envelope.

“I’ve taken a lot of time off this summer,” he said. “My goal the rest of the summer is to get more rest and get back into form. It’s always good to be home and play some golf with old friends.”

That little kid we heard so much about way back when remains on track for bigger and better things.

It will be fun to watch his game for three more years at ISU – and beyond.

The annual Joliet Park District Junior Golf Tournament concludes Wednesday at Inwood.

The event through the years has afforded the local golf community an opportunity to watch some of our future stars in competitive action.

Whenever I covered the tournament, my attention largely was on the Junior A division for 16- to 18-year-olds, with a peek at Junior B, which is for 14- to 15-year-olds. The younger kids play in Junior C, and they play only nine holes per round.

But a dozen or more years ago at the tournament, I started hearing about a young kid who many predicted was destined to be one of the best golfers to come out of our area.

“You should see this Trent Wallace kid hit the ball,” I heard more than once. “He is going to be something special.”

Wallace is small in stature, but on the golf course, he always competed favorably against taller, larger and older kids.

Nothing that has happened through the years – including a solid career for Joliet Township – has changed anyone’s thinking. Wallace is exactly where you would have expected him to be.

I talked with him last weekend during the Joliet Park District Tournament, where he finished third in the Men’s Championship Flight.

His July calendar also includes the Illinois State amateur next week at Panther Creek in Springfield and the Illinois Open the following week at Royal Fox in St. Charles.

A strong showing in either of those events would be huge. Regardless, it will be virtually impossible to top what happened in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament late in the spring at Prairie Dunes in Hutchinson, Nebraska, a links-style course.

With his freshman year at Illinois State winding down, Wallace shot 211 for three rounds, including a pair of 1-under-par 69s, to beat Wichita State’s Grant Bennett by two strokes for the title and earn a berth in an NCAA Regional. Bennett was named MVC Golfer of the Year; Wallace, ISU’s only all-conference golfer, was selected the Newcomer of the Year.

“I played real well in that tournament,” Wallace said. “It was a treat to play there. It’s a beautiful course.

Hosmer, Perez lift AL to All-Star victory

The Associated Press SAN DIEGO – Eric Hosmer and Salvador Perez made sure the Kansas City Royals will start at home, sweet, home if they get a chance to defend their World Series title.

The Royals duo homered off former Kansas City teammate Johnny Cueto during a six-pitch span in the second inning, Hosmer added an RBI single, and the American League beat the Nationals, 4-2, Tuesday night for their fourth straight win in the All-Star game.

David Ortiz found himself in the middle of the most touching moment at Petco Park, embraced by his AL teammates near first base after exiting his final All-Star Game. The popular Big Papi plans to retire at 40 after this season with Boston.

Kris Bryant of the Cubs led the parade of sparkling young talent with a first-inning home run. Dellin Betances flashed his 100 mph heat and Astros reliever Will Harris came on to throw a called third strike past Cardinals rookie Aledmys Diaz on a 3-2 pitch on the outside corner with the bases loaded to end the eighth.

Royals reliever Kelvin Herrera pitched a hitless sixth for the AL, which will open the Series at home for the 11th time in 14 years since the AllStar winner was used to determine the hosts for Games 1 and 2.

Kansas City became baseball royalty last fall, bursting to a 2-0 lead over the New York Mets at Kauffman Stadium, where Cueto pitched a two-hitter in the second game. The Royals won in five games for their first title since 1985.

This year, Kansas City is languishing at 45-43, seven games off the AL Central lead and in the middle of the wild-card race as attention turns to which teams will be buyers and sellers as the Aug. 1 trade deadline approaches.

Cleveland’s Corey Kluber pitched a 1-2-3 second inning for the win, and Zach Britton got the save for the AL, which cut its deficit to 43-42 with two ties Ortiz, Boston’s beloved designated hitter, wore spikes with gold-colored bottoms and matching batting gloves to mark his 10th All-Star selection and delivered the AL batting order to umpires at home plate.

Ortiz hit a smash down the firstbase line that Anthony Rizzo snagged to rob him of a potential RBI double in the first and walked against Jose Fernandez in the third.

The All-Star Game returned to San Diego for the first time since 1992 at Jack Murphy Stadium. Just before this first pitch, commissioner Rob Manfred joined Rod Carew, his family and the family of late Padres great Tony Gwynn and named the batting titles after the

Sailors dressed in white lined the foul lines and outfield warning tracks for the national anthems. The Tenors, a British Columbia-based group, changed an “O Canada” lyric to “We’re all brothers and sisters. All lives matter to the great,” and one held up a sign

reading “All Lives Matter.”

Randy Jones threw out the ceremonial first pitch and former Padres All-Star closer Trevor Hoffman helped open, bringing the game ball to the mound from the bullpen accompanied

by AC/DC’s “Hell’s Bells.”

With an NL ballpark hosting for the second year in a row in a streak of at least four, the AL wore white uniforms, hit last and used the Padres clubhouse on the first-base side. Ball boys in retro-style mustard-and-mud Padres uniforms lent a San Diego feel to Petco, which opened in 2004.

There was a home run on the game’s fourth pitch for the second straight year; Bryant connected on a 96 mph Chris Sale fastball with two outs as hitters swung early in the count to beat the shadows creeping in from the leftfield corner in the late-afternoon start.

Bryant, who had struck out in all of his regular-seat at-bats against Sale, was part of an all-Cubs infield – the first starting infield quartet from a single team since the 1963 St. Louis Cardinals.

“I think a lot of us were looking first pitch,” said Bryant, who played college ball for the University of San Diego. “A lot of pitchers are coming into the game trying to light up the radar gun a bit.”

That was the highlight for the NL Central-leading Cubs, whose fan base was pumped up by a fast start and dreams of the team’s first title since 1908.

LOCKPORT – Following Plainfield North’s victory over Minooka in Tuesday’s first quarterfinal at the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association Summer Tournament Lockport Regional, Plainfield Central, Joliet Catholic and Plainfield South also won to advance to Wednesday’s semifinals.

Plainfield Central whipped Lockport, 9-1, and will face Plainfield North at 4:30 p.m. JCA topped Lincoln-Way East, 7-3, and Plainfield South knocked out Providence, 13-1, in five innings.

The Hilltoppers and Cougars will tangle at 7 p.m.

Kyle Cockrell allowed a run and three hits in his six solid innings to lead Central (10-6) past Lockport (9-7).

David Ascencio doubled, singled and drove in four runs.

“I had a solid performance on the

mound,” Cockrell said. “My changeup was my best pitch, and my defense was outstanding.”

Central scored five runs in the first inning. Ascencio’s two-run double got the Wildcats started, and Zach Hefner’s two-out, two-run single closed out the big rally.

“Kyle Cockrell pitched a fine game,” Central coach John Rosner said. “David Ascencio is going to be a special player. Great pitching, sound defense and clutch two-out hitting gave us this victory.”

In JCA’s win over Lincoln-Way East, Hilltoppers sophomore Jared Cushing’s two-RBI single in the bottom of the third inning provided a 3-2 lead that JCA (11-4) would not relinquish. Fellow sophomore Greg Ziegler scattered seven hits in his solid six innings.

“It was a good win for us,” Cushing

said. “The coaches have really been helping me out with my batting, and it has paid dividends in the last few games.”

Cushing doubled, had the two-run single and walked twice. Senior Jack Surin doubled, singled and was hit by a pitch.

Hilltoppers closer Al Hartsell entered with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh inning in relief of Ziegler. He picked a huge strikeout, walked in a run to make it 7-3 but then induced a game-ending 4-6-3 double play.

“Al Hartsell did a great job closing,” JCA coach Jared Voss said.

“Greg Ziegler pitched an outstanding game, and Jared Cushing had a great day the plate.”

On June 6, Providence rallied past junior-laden Plainfield South, 4-3, in the Class 4A University of Illinois Su-

persectional. The Celtics went on to their third consecutive state championship.

This time, senior-laden South crushed Providence behind Mississippi State recruit Austin Marozas. He fired a three-hitter with eight strikeouts, and the Cougars put it away with an eight-run fourth inning.

“We really wanted to beat Providence after they ended our dream in the spring,” Marozas said. “We played very well.”

In addition to being national player of the year, Murphy was a three-time All-America selection while playing for coach Christine Scheibe at Joliet Catholic. During her Florida career, she was a third-team All-American as a freshman, second team as a sophomore and first team each of her last two seasons. She has played in numerous international competitions with Team USA and has played professionally in Japan.

The top-ranked U.S. team, which has won silver medals at the past two Olympics, opens the tournament Aug. 6 against Puerto Rico. Brazil, ranked No. 3 in the world, is the two-time defending Olympic champion.

“Ultimately, we have assembled a group that we believe is capable of embracing the challenges a tournament like the Olympics will surely present,” Kiraly said.

The U.S. team lost, 3-2, Sunday to Brazil in the final match of the FIVB World Grand Prix in Thailand. It was the last major international tournament before the Rio Games.

But when Rodgers and Forte were injured last year, Carey stepped up, and won the praise of Fox for his physical play and ability to push the pile forward, especially late in games. Grill fish and fruit for an appealing summer dish

When I first started grilling, I had one of those beginner’s luck experiences that made grilled salmon and pineapple a mainstay in my dinner rotation.

I was visiting my uncle in Florida and offered to make dinner. The only thing everyone ate was salmon, so salmon it was. I wanted to give the salmon a sweet-and-sour flavor much like my uncle’s favorite Asian dish. So I marinated the fish, scallions and thick slices of pineapple with traditional Asian seasonings of toasted sesame oil, fresh ginger, citrus juice, rice wine vinegar and soy sauce.

Because there was a fair amount of sugar in the marinade, I grilled the salmon on a cedar plank so it wouldn’t burn and the bottom skin wouldn’t get too fishy.

By contrast, I wanted the whole scallions and the pineapple rings to char in places. I placed them directly on the cooking grate around the planked salmon so the natural sugars would caramelize.

The sweet ingredients in the marinade may promote sticking, so use a wood plank if possible. If you don’t use a plank, slide two spatulas under the fish – one from each side – and lift, leaving the skin on the grill.

If you like salmon skin, turn up the heat and let crisp for two to three minutes before removing from the grill. If you don’t like the skin, place the burners on high and burn the skin off. Brush the grates once the salmon skin has turned to “ash.”

Add steamed jasmine rice, and you have a grilled meal with an appealing sweet-and-sour yin and yang.

Wild Salmon with Grilled Pineapple and Scallions Grilling method: indirect/medium heat Marinating time: 20 minutes

1 center-cut wild salmon fillet, about 2 pounds

½ cup fresh-squeezed lime juice, about 3 juicy limes

oils, brown sugar, ginger, soy sauce and sesame seeds in an extra-large heavy-duty plastic food bag. Add salmon, pineapple rings and scallions; seal securely. Rotate to distribute marinade and make sure all the food is covered. Refrigerate at least 30 minutes or up to 1 hour, turning occasionally.

Remove fish, pineapple and scallions from marinade and drain, discarding marinade. (Alternatively, boil the marinade for three minutes and serve as a sauce for the fish.) Lay fish, skin side down, on a soaked cedar plank or directly on a very clean cooking grate. Cook for 10 minutes.

After the fish has cooked for 10 minutes, place pineapple rings and scallions directly over the heat on either side of the fish. Turn pineapple and scallions once halfway during the cooking time, about three to four minutes a side. Remove fruit and scallions to a clean plate when they are warmed through and marked on the outside.

The fish is done when the flesh is opaque and the stripes between the orange flesh are solid white, about 20-25 minutes.

Transfer the fish to a platter along with fruit. Garnish with lime wedges. Season to taste with salt.

Advice for coping with allergies Dear Dr. K: The weather’s warming up.

For me, that means one thing: allergies. Can you give me some specific advice to help keep my allergies under control?

Dear Reader: Inhaled pollen, from trees, grass and weeds, is responsible for hay fever. These allergens get into the air – and into our noses, eyes and lungs –causing the symptoms allergy sufferers dread.

It takes only a minuscule amount of pollen to trigger an allergic reaction. And pollen is everywhere during allergy season, impossible to avoid completely. As a result, many people find medication is necessary.

But taking steps to reduce your pollen exposure also can help to lessen the severity and frequency of your symptoms.

Many people check pollen counts on weather apps or websites so they know what to expect on a given day. These can be of some help. But pollen counts can fluctuate depending on things such as the weather or time of day. For example, they’re usually lower on cooler, rainy days. And they’re usually higher in the morning, particularly on warm days.

Trees and plants are very consistent in the levels of allergens they release into the air. In the Northeast, where I live, the pollen season starts in February or March and ends in October. In southern states it starts earlier and ends later. In northern climates, trees kick off the season, followed by grasses and finally weeds.

Here are some ways to minimize your pollen exposure: • Stay indoors when the pollen count is high, especially on dry, windy days.

• Stay indoors between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m., when airborne pollen counts are likely to be at their highest.

• Keep windows closed during allergy seasons, and turn on the air conditioner.

• Keep car windows closed when driving.

• Don’t hang clothing and bedding out to dry.

• Wash your hair before bedtime, after a day spent outdoors.

Except for very minor allergies, it’s a good idea to treat your allergies and not just suffer through them. Apart from helping you feel better, timely treatment will lessen the likelihood of complications such as sinus infections and blocked ears. If you also have asthma, you might find your asthma will improve if you treat your hay fever.

If you do take allergy medicines (antihistamines, nasal steroids and so forth), start taking them several weeks before you anticipate your allergy season will start. Clinical trials have demonstrated this strategy is more effective than starting the medicines after you already have developed symptoms.

The best medicines for moderate to severe nasal allergy symptoms are nasal sprays of medicines called glucocorticoids.

Antihistamine pills also are effective. The older “first-generation” pills are more likely to cause side effects than the newer pills.

Some antihistamines come as nasal sprays and also are effective. Finally, a nasal spray of a medicine called cromolyn also is effective.

Summer should be about beauty and warmth – not nasal allergies. Some combination of these approaches should help you.

After the heart-ace lead and spade shift, declarer wins that trick, cashes the diamond ace to see the 3-0 break, and leads his club to dummy’s queen and East’s ace. Back comes another spade.

South wins in his hand, ruffs a heart with the diamond seven, discards his last spade on the club king, trumps a club, ruffs the heart queen with the diamond eight, draws trumps, and claims.

If only West had led a spade initially, he would have defeated the contract -- tough.

Finally, note that five hearts doubled would probably go down only two -- also tough, because it is rarely right to bid five over five.
