Romeoville looks to join electronics recycling initiative in Will County

Village would be fourth government body to join renewed program

mmallory@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – The village of Romeoville is the fourth government body poised to join the Will County Resource Recovery and Energy Division’s electronics recycling program.

The village board approved an intergovernmental agreement last week with Will County to bring twice-monthly electronics recycling events to Romeoville, starting in August. County officials are expected to take final action on the agreement later this month. A call to the county’s land use department was not immediately returned Monday.

Mayor Jim Noak said Monday that the village is excited to partner with the county to provide an important service, but dates and times are not yet decided.

The County Board approved agreements in June with the village of Peotone and New Lenox Township for the two government bodies to host electronic drop-off events twice a month. Lockport was the first municipality back on board in March for electronics recycling in the county after the county’s longtime recycling vendor exited its contract prematurely. The

county had 13 drop-off locations before the ending of the agreement.

One change in Romeoville would be the location, Noak said. Electronics formerly were collected at the village’s emergency management building, but the village public works facility at 615 Anderson Drive now will play host.

“Our public works building is more accessible,” Noak said. “There’s more staffing, and it’s easier to get a truck in there.”

People from any of Will County’s 37 communities would be allowed to use the electronics recycling sites. If a municipality has a portion of its boundaries within Will County, such as Naperville or Minooka, residents from any part of that municipality also can drop off electronics.

Identification cards are checked at the drop-off site. Drop-off events are limited to two TVs a vehicle.

Lincoln-Way to refund families over driver education fees again Refund amount is $321,635 for 2010-11 year

fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Lincoln-Way District 210 officials once again will have to refund families who were improperly charged for driver education fees.

Taryn Atwell, the district’s spokeswoman, confirmed Monday that the district will have to refund families $321,635 because they were improperly charged $350 for driver education in the 2010-11 school year.

The district posted an application for refunds on its website. Applications will be accepted through Sept. 1.

District officials have said in a news release that a $350 waiver for driver education fees was approved in January 2011 but that it was not approved before the collection of registration fees in fall 2010.

The driver education fees should not have exceeded the approved $125 waiver during the fall semester.

Atwell said district officials can’t speak to how this occurred because the current administration wasn’t there at the time.

When asked whether current district administrators reached out to past ones over how the issue happened, Superintendent Scott Tingley said no.

“It’s certainly unfortunate, and it’s something we’re trying to correct,” he said.

The latest refund will be in addition to the $377,411 that the district owes families as a result of improperly charged driver education fees for the 2015-16 school year, Atwell confirmed.

Since the Lincoln-Way board decided last year to close the North high school because of crippling financial issues, the district has been the subject of criticism and scrutiny by residents.

Many of those residents formed Lincoln-Way Area Taxpayers Unite to sue the board in an effort to prevent North’s closure, but it was unsuccessful. Members of LWATU and other residents have criticized district officials for financial mismanagement and lack of transparency.

Lincoln-Way is under investigation by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to determine whether any federal securities laws have been violated. The district also is under a federal investigation.

The board has approved hiring Kelly Luzzo, its new finance director, to help stabilize accounting procedures, according to Tingley; and Steven Langert, the interim business manager hired last fall, will continue in his role.

CenterPoint still assessing ‘financial feasibility’ of private-public partnership

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Gov. Bruce Rauner announced a private-public partnership Monday to build a Houbolt Road bridge, saying the project will help maintain Will County as the “transportation hub of Illinois.”

The bridge would span the Des Plaines River BNSF Railroad tracks to create a direct connection to Interstate 80 for trucks at the CenterPoint Intermodal Center.

On the drawing board for years, the bridge should become a reality by early 2019, Rauner said.

The toll bridge will be funded, built and operated by CenterPoint Properties, which is spending $150 million to $170 million, Rauner said. The state will spend about $21 million improving Houbolt Road and the interchange at I-80.

The bridge will be built with “private investment – no taxpayer money,” Rauner said.

CenterPoint, however, appeared to send mixed signals in a written statement, saying it was happy to be part of the project – but that it still is assessing the financial feasibility of the bridge.

No CenterPoint representatives spoke at the news conference in Joliet.

Those who were there declined to comment when asked.

The company, in response to a request for comment, issued a statement late Monday afternoon saying: “CenterPoint is excited to be part of infrastructure improvement efforts that will help to improve access and connection to the industrial areas of Will County via the interstate, ensuring safe and efficient transportation of goods, as well as creating additional jobs and economic opportunity for the region.”

It also said: “In conjunction with today’s announcement, CenterPoint is moving forward to assess the financial feasibility of the Houbolt Bridge. At the same time, we are working to coordinate the design, and construction of, and approvals for the project working with all of our investors, partners and stakeholders, including the city of Joliet, Will County and the state of

Community Center gets garden grant Fencing, indoor hydroponic equipment to be purchased for Warren-Sharpe

Gibson and a group of other children who attend Warren-Sharpe tend the garden, and it appears they will for years to come.

The garden will be taken to the next level with a $10,000 grant from ComEd’s Green Region grant program, for which it partners with Openlands, a metropolitan conservation organization.

Kay Bolden, the center’s executive director, said the funding will help build infrastructure for the garden, now in its third year. The grant will pay for fencing for the garden’s outer edge, a hand-washing station and a disability accessible area that will help include all members of the community.

“We have a lot of people in this neighborhood who use walkers or wheelchairs,” Bolden said.

The produce helps feed people in the neighborhood, which is a federally designated “food desert” – a low-income urban neighborhood where most residents do not have convenient and easy access to fresh, healthy and affordable food.

Between 600 and 800 families are served by the center’s food pantry on a monthly basis, in addition to 200 to 300 hot meals served each week during after-school and summer programs.

Joliet D-86 board picks new principal for Marshall

Luis Gonzalez was approved last week as the school’s principal by the Joliet Public Schools District 86 Board of School Inspectors, according to a district news release. He previously was assistant principal at M.J. Cunningham Elementary School.

“I am grateful for this opportunity to expand my influence as a school leader

at A.O. Marshall,” Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez started at District 86 as Cunningham’s assistant principal in July 2015.

Before that, he was a teacher for six years at the UNO Charter School Network in Chicago. He also has teaching experiLuis Gonzalez ence in New York.

Gonzalez has a bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in Spanish from the University of Michigan, a master’s degree in teaching

from Pace University in New York and a master’s degree in educational leadership from the University of Phoenix.

Gonzalez said that in the past year, he has had a great experience with families and specific departments to improve students’ education.

“It’s my passion to ensure all students have access to high-quality education,” he said.

LOCAL BRIEFS Police seek public’s help in fatal Joliet shooting

JOLIET – Police are investigating whether a woman killed Friday night in Joliet was the intended target of the shooting.

Sequita M. Walsh, 34, was slain just before midnight while she was among a group of people on a porch in the 500 block of South Joliet Street. Deputy Chief Al Roechner said Walsh, of Joliet, was related to residents of the house. No one else was injured.

“It remains unknown if she was the target or if others at the address were targeted,” Roechner said Monday.

Walsh was struck in the back by a single shot and taken by ambulance to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, where she was pronounced dead at 12:48 a.m. Saturday, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call police at 815-

724-3020 or to anonymously call Crime Stoppers at 800-323-6734.

Joliet police end patrol pairings after peaceful weekend

JOLIET – Many Joliet police officers are back to solo patrols after doubling up over the weekend.

Mayor Bob O’Dekirk and Chief Brian Benton decided Friday to pair officers as a precaution. A number of police departments around the nation ordered law enforcement to work in pairs after five officers were fatally shot Thursday during a protest in Dallas in response to the recent killings of two black men by police in Louisiana and Minnesota.

“This was just meant to be through the weekend,” Benton said Monday. “There are no plans to do it again unless some issue comes up.”

The chief said he was unaware of any recent threats made against local police.

Joliet Mayor Bob O’Dekirk alluded to those concerns at the news conference after contending that Joliet and Will County have become the primary area for economic development in the state.

“We also know that infrastructure hasn’t kept up with the development that is happening here,” O’Dekirk said. “I’ve heard the complaints from the people of Will County. I think we’ve all heard them.”

Local officials for years have been talking about the possibility of a Houbolt Road bridge running straight to CenterPoint to relieve traffic on other roads.

Discussions have included CenterPoint, local unions, and state and federal officials.

“By working together, we can get things done,” Will County Executive Larry Walsh Sr. said.

use the bridge initially, including more than 6,600 trucks. By 2040, traffic is expected to grow to about 30,000 vehicles a day, including 18,000 trucks.

The project tells business prospects that the state and Will County are ready to do what is needed to accommodate continued growth, said John Greuling, CEO of the Will County Center for Economic Development.

“We think this is going to send a signal that we have needed,” Greuling said. “To build new infrastructure, that sends a very strong signal.”

JOLIET – The Joliet Slammers will host a “Turn the Ballpark Blue” Night on July 20 at Silver Cross Field to honor all police officers.

The Slammers are working with the Assist the Officer Foundation of Dallas, Texas, to raise funds for the families of the five police officers who were killed Thursday in Dallas at a downtown protest.

Gates will open at 6:05 p.m. with a game time set for 7:05 p.m. Tickets to the game are $10, with $5 from every ticket sold using the promotional code “BLUE” going to the Assist the Officer Foundation. Tickets are free to police officers.

Wanda T. Flavell (nee Wasielewski), age 91, late of Shorewood, and formerly of Morris and Plainfield, Downers Grove and Westmont, passed away peacefully Saturday, July 9, 2016, at the home of her son.

Born Jan. 3, 1925, in Chicago, to Frank and Lottie (Pawlak) Wasielewski, she was a graduate of Kelly High School. She met the love of her life, Thomas Flavell, at a dance, and they enjoyed 49 years of married life. Thomas was a carpenter who built six homes for their family and Wanda was involved with the designing, staining and painting of their homes. She also kept the books and filed the taxes for his construction business.

Wanda was always active in church and enjoyed serving on the church decorating committees. She also volunteered at a food pantry and will be remembered for her large vegetable and flower gardens. Her biggest joy in recent years was having the family over for Sunday dinner.

Surviving are her children, Leslie (David) Goodson, Terry Flavell, Laurie (Kevin) Mann, Linda (Matthew Cohan) Flavell, and Austin Flavell; her grandchildren, Carrie Oldenburg, Phillip Mann, D.J. Goodson, Jeremy Goodson, and Jonathan Goodson; her great-grandchildren, Wesley Oldenburg, Ariana Oldenburg, and Everett Oldenburg; and many nieces and nephews.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS PHILADELPHIA – Scientist and oncologist Dr. Alfred G. Knudson Jr., who was renowned for a groundbreaking theory of how cancer develops, died after a long illness, according to the research center where he worked for decades. He was 93 years old.

Knudson, who had been with the Fox Chase Cancer Center for decades, reportedly died Sunday at his home in Philadelphia.

Knudson, who was born in Los Angeles, served in the Navy and the Army and earned a medical degree from Columbia University in New York and a doctorate from the California Institute

of Technology.

He was renowned for his two-hit hypothesis, published in 1971 and based on his studies of children with retinoblastoma, a rare cancer of the eye. He suggested that people with hereditary cancers inherit one copy of a damaged gene, the first hit, but develop cancer only if they develop a second hit, the

DECATUR – A black man who was shot and wounded by police in central Illinois on Monday was armed with a BB gun that resembled a real handgun, police said.

Authorities in Decatur said officers responded to reports of a man armed with a gun around 1 a.m. Police initially said the man was armed with a handgun and a large knife strapped to his wrist.

Interim Police Chief James Getz said during an afternoon news conference that officers later determined the man was armed with a BB gun that resembled a firearm. Getz said Officer Andrew Wittmer, who is white, fired one round that “ended the threat.”

The investigation was turned over to Illinois State Police, as is standard for any officer-involved shooting, Getz said. The police chief said officers’ patrol cars have in-car video that caught part of the encounter. He noted that the officers involved were not equipped

Attorneys set to give Blagojevich sentence recommendations

CHICAGO – Federal prosecutors and defense attorneys faced a midnight deadline for motions regarding the sentence they want former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich to receive when his case returns to court for a resentencing hearing next month.

Both sides were given the deadline to file motions on Blagojevich’s 14-year prison sentence in anticipation of the scheduled Aug. 9 hearing before U.S. District Judge James Zagel.

The hearing stems from an appellate court panel’s decision last year to throw out five of the 18 corruption charges for which Blagojevich was convicted in 2011. After that decision, prosecutors decided against retrying Blagojevich on the tossed charges and asked that

Chicago starts park safety program based on 2009 effort

CHICAGO – Chicago officials are launching a new park safety program modeled after a 2009 effort to help kids in at-risk neighborhoods get to school safely.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that the new initiative is getting $112,500 from the Chicago Park District and will be similar to Safe Passage.

Workers for that program wear bright vests and monitor children walking to school.

The new program will employ 150 workers hired by Chicago Public Schools who will help children get to and from recreational activities in parks. The program will start this week in 20 parks and be scheduled in late afternoons and evenings around programming for teens.

Cook prosecutors seek new trial in 1996 fatal arson

CHICAGO – Cook County prosecutors said a man convicted in 1996 of a fire that killed two people should get a new trial because advances in science have invalidated previous evidence.

Adam Gray is serving a mandatory sentence of life without parole, the Chicago Tribune reported. Prosecutors from Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez’s Conviction Integrity Unit suggested a new trial for him in recently filed court papers.

Sally Daly, a spokeswoman for Alvarez, cited advancements in fire science as the decision to agree to a new trial even though the evidence collected

by Gray’s attorneys essentially is unchanged since prosecutors opposed a new trial a year ago.

Gray was found guilty of setting fire to a two-flat on the southwest side of Chicago after a girl who lived there rejected

him in March 1993. The girl and her family escaped, but 54-year-old Peter McGuiness and his sister, 74-year-old Margaret Mesa, died.

Two of the nation’s leading fire scientists, John Lentini and Gerald Hurst, evaluated the arson investigation.

Hurst said “alligator” charring and burn patterns found at the scene weren’t indicators of arson and that the fire investigators in the case had failed to do a thorough enough investigation to rule out accidental causes.

Lentini determined that petroleum distillate found in a milk jug in a nearby alley was different from the substance in wood at the scene. He said neither was an effective accelerant.

With information from Lentini and Hurst, prosecutors said one year ago that they still were confident in Gray’s conviction.

They pointed to his confession to buying gasoline to set fire to a two-flat in the southwest side of Chicago as a reason to stand by the conviction. Gray has since denied the admissions, saying he confessed because

Chicago mayor’s aide to leave for private sector job

CHICAGO – Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s longest-serving aide is leaving his post for a job in the private sector.

Mike Faulman has served as the former White House chief of staff’s personal aide since 2010 when Emanuel launched his first mayoral run in Chicago.

Faulman also worked in the White House.

The 32-year-old Faulman told the Chicago Sun-Times that he plans to join Detroit-based Shinola. The wristwatch and bike manufacturer has announced intentions to open a Chicago factory.

Faulman said that if the mayor had four hands, he’d be two of them. He said he doesn’t have a defined role, but is always two steps behind Emanuel altering speeches and schedules and contacting community leaders.

Faulman earned $82,500 in the city post.

ST. JOSEPH, Mich. – A jail inmate trying to escape from the Berrien County Courthouse in St. Joseph wrested a gun from an officer Monday, killing two bailiffs and injuring two more people before he was fatally shot by other officers, a sheriff said.

Larry Darnell Gordon, 45, who was locked up on several felony charges, was being moved from a cell for a courtroom appearance when a fight occurred and he was able to disarm an officer, Sheriff Paul Bailey said.

Bailey said it does not appear that Gordon was handcuffed.

The inmate shot a sheriff’s deputy, killed the bailiffs and then shot a civilian in the arm in a public area, the sheriff said.

DALLAS – When Micah Johnson opened fire on Dallas police in an act of vengeance against white officers, he was attacking a department whose chief has been lauded across the country for taking bold steps to root out bad cops and repair relations with minorities.

Police Chief David Brown, a black man who pushed through the reforms despite resistance from the rank-and-file, boasted at a news conference Monday that crime, police shootings and excessive-force complaints against the department have all dropped dramatically on his watch.

“This is the best department in the country, and I’m proud to be associated with the men and women of the Dallas Police Department,” he said.

Johnson, a black Army veteran who served in Afghanistan, killed five officers in a sniper attack Thursday that he portrayed as payback for the fatal police shootings of black men last week in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and suburban Minneapolis. The attack ended with Johnson blown up by a bomb delivered by a police robot.

No evidence has come to light to suggest that the 25-year-old Johnson had a grudge specifically against the 3,400-officer Dallas Police Department.

“Dallas PD is paying the price for problems elsewhere around our country,” said Mohamed Elibiary, a former Texas-based Department of Homeland Security adviser.

Carlyle Holder, president of the National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice, had been holding up the Dallas Police Department as an example of a law enforcement agency effectively addressing the problem of racial disparities in police work.

“That’s what made the killing of those officers so much harder to take,” he said.

Brown became chief in 2010, taking over a department that a generation ago had one of the highest rates of civilian shootings in the country. In 2012, his efforts to heal the rift between police and the black community took on greater urgency when the killing of a black man by a white officer triggered widespread protests.

The chief responded by creating a public database to track shootings by police, requiring officers to undergo lethal-force training every two months instead of every two years, and firing 70 officers involved in questionable incidents, including some who faced charges of excessive use of force.

The biggest backlash has come in the last six months, when Brown started a community policing program in mostly Hispanic and black neighborhoods. He began reassigning officers from desk jobs to foot patrols, a move

“We need more boots on the ground, absolutely,” said Mike Mata, vice president of the Dallas Police Association. “The problem is he was reassigning detectives from the office to back on the streets without any retraining.

It’s almost like you set them up for failure.”

The dispute further strained a department that Brown said is one of the lowest-paid in the region, with new recruits making $43,000 a year, and has had such trouble recruiting officers that academy classes are frequently canceled for lack of participation.

While attending the University of Texas at Austin on a full scholarship, Brown became motivated to enter law enforcement when he returned to Dallas in the early 1980s and found friends from the neighborhood caught up in a cocaine epidemic. Months after he became chief, his 27-year-old son, David Brown Jr., was shot to death by police after killing two officers.

“I’ve been black a long time,” Brown told reporters Monday. “We’re in a much better place than when I was young man here, but we have more work to do, particularly in my profession.”

In the south Oak Cliff neighborhood where Brown grew up, for example, 12 officers on the beat regularly introduce themselves to residents – a dramatic shift for a community that had been accustomed only to seeing officers responding to a crime. One of the team’s priorities is to help convicted felons find jobs.

“We knew we couldn’t arrest our way out of the situation,” Maj. Thomas Castro said.

Since the community policing strategy was instituted in January, violent crime in the neighborhood has dropped 10 percent, he said.

tion of violence across our country, a few thoughts come to mind. Ladies and gentlemen, peaceful resolutions to all societal problems can only be accomplished when we all look deeply into our souls and truly seek and find the “goodness” in our fellow man.

If we all consistently seek “positiveness” in our daily lives, then hope will conquer fear and peace will certainly reign supreme in our world.

The survival of our entire human race may very well be relying on us and our “positive” response.

What message is in Rauner’s cuts?

Gov. Bruce Rauner has been touring Illinois to talk about his new “messaging.” He’s quite excited about his “messaging” plans, telling one reporter that if he could do anything differently about his tenure so far, it would be to improve the way he gets his message out to voters.

Yep. That’s really what he said.

One of the things that the governor was apparently counting on during his Downstate tour is few, if any, follow-up questions from reporters. For instance, after he completely dodged a question from a Peoria TV reporter about whether he deserves any blame for a year without a budget, the subject was changed and the governor was let off the hook.

Despite this, Rauner actually complained in Champaign last week about how “there’s no substance in the reporting,” before saying he was in the process of creating his own communication platforms to push his messaging directly to Illinoisans.

He’s not wrong about the lack of substance in the media’s coverage. A recent survey of social service providers by the highly respected United Way of Illinois was almost completely ignored by media outlets, despite an eye-grabbing finding that about a million Illinoisans had lost services during the impasse.

And the governor’s contention that he himself had cut $800 million in

“wasteful spending” from the budget made it into print and on the air without a single question being asked about what those cuts were.

As it turns out, there are multiple problems with the governor’s list of cuts, which I asked to see. Some of the saved money is due to action by his predecessor, a chunk of the cash is from special state funds with their own dedicated revenue sources, a bunch of the spending was put into the six-month stopgap budget that Rauner signed into law on June 30 and Rauner himself requested some of the “cut” items be appropriated in his own budget proposal last spring.

Let’s start at the very top of the governor’s list: “Medicaid Eligibility Redeterminations,” which he claims saved $53 million. OK, but that was initiated in 2012 with Medicaid reforms signed into law by Gov. Pat Quinn. Rauner’s budget office says Quinn may have signed it, but he fully implemented it.

Rauner’s touted savings from cutting $21 million subsidies for disabled mass transit users is illusory because that money comes from the state’s Road Fund, which is funded with motor fuel taxes, license fees, etc. The same goes

for his $4 million cut to Amtrak.

Several other programs on the governor’s list also get their money from Other State Funds (OSF), including tourism ($13 million claimed cut), recycling ($6 million), renewable and energy efficiency programs ($8 million), ICC vacancies and transfers ($6 million) and coal programs ($15 million).

The governor’s budget office claims that saving OSF money can help patch holes in the rest of the budget. But these funds (like the Road Fund, which was swept last year for a fortune) are set up and funded for particular purposes.

The governor claims in his list that he cut “Assorted DHS Programs not covered by Court Orders or Consent Decrees” for a total of $91 million. But several of those programs are funded in the stopgap budget that the governor signed into law on June 30, including The Autism Program, ARC of Illinois, Teen Reach, homeless prevention, addiction prevention, the Emergency Food Program, funeral and burial expenses, immigrant integration services, welcoming centers, epilepsy services, etc.

Rauner also claims reductions to

Criminal Justice Information Authority programs including Cease Fire, but that’s in the stopgap as well.

And despite claiming credit for making cuts, the governor actually requested spending for the programs in his own budget proposal from earlier this year, including paratransit and Amtrak. His budget also increased funding for tourism programs.

The governor also claimed $100 million in savings for not constructing the Illiana Expressway, which was in doubt anyway. And his touted $145 million cut to child care programs was reversed when Rauner cut a deal with the Democrats.

And then there’s the claimed savings of $4 million due to a delay in the opening of a veterans home in Chicago. But that delay actually ended up increasing the cost of the project and no money was appropriated by the Democratic-controlled General Assembly last fiscal year anyway, so it’s not really a Rauner savings.

Also, is a veterans home really “wasteful” spending? I doubt many politicians would make that claim. Much the same could be said of several other programs on the list.

Suchor’s tie-breaking blast triggers 8-run inning

Shaw Media correspondent LOCKPORT – Lockport and Joliet Central were deadlocked at 3-3 in the longtime rivals’ Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association Summer State Baseball Tournament opening-round game Monday.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Lockport Regional host Porters had the bases full with one out. Por-

ters senior center fielder Jake Suchor stepped into the batter’s box.

“The game was tied and I went up to the plate just trying to do my job,” Suchor said.

Suchor sent a fastball over the leftfield fence at historic Ed Flink Field for a 7-3 Lockport lead. The Porters would add four more runs to make it a snowman – an eight-run inning – and bust it open.

“It felt really good to hit

the grand slam to help us win this big game,” Suchor added.

The Porters eventually claimed a 13-3 victory in six innings.

Joliet Central struck first against Ryan Gabriel in the second inning.

Steelmen starting pitcher Ricky Malmfeldt, who was 1 for 2 with an RBI, singled to lead off the top of the second.

Thomas Langley followed with a booming double and the Steelmen were in business.

Solid situational hitting by Carlos Garcia and Connor Lawson followed.

Both drove home runs on groundouts to give Central a 2-0 lead.

That was short-lived, however, as Lockport senior Nick Strysik hammered a two-out, two-run homer to tie the game, 2-2. Strysik’s blast plated senior catcher Ryne Travis, who had walked.

Parker wins rugged match play competition

cherron@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – John Parker doesn’t remember experiencing any day of golf quite like the one that he took part in on Monday.

But the daylong grind that he went through only made the reward that much more satisfying for the golfer, who will be a senior at Lockport this season.

Parker had to prevail in five different rounds of nine-hole match play in order to emerge as the champion of the iTour Match Play Tournament at The Links at Carillon.

He was the only one of 28 competitors to win all five of his matches on a sunny, 90-degree day in which the final 10 individuals wound up finishing nearly 12 hours after they started.

In the championship match, things went to the ninth hole before Parker finally prevailed 2-up over Palatine’s Brent Penrose.

“This was the toughest that I’ve ever had to deal with,” Parker said. “I didn’t take all of the matches to nine holes,

“I had no easy matches during the day. Every match was a grind and I’d go up two and lose it and then go back to all square and then go back up. And in the finals, it was nuts since every time I thought I had him, he just came back and threw another one and another one in. He rolled a birdie in off the green on seven and then took me to nine. He just was not done.”

Parker hopes that a challenging day like the one that he faced on Monday will pay dividends this fall when he looks to finally qualify for state after coming up a bit shy the past two years.

“I hope to lead our team again and hopefully Noah (Speechley), who played here, stays consistent,” Parker said. “I played Alex Middleton in the first round and he played good throughout the day and we had a couple of our younger kids and they even

“It was pretty tough out here,” Manzo said. “It started getting hot around 8 o’clock and it was relentless. I’ll definitely say that having boxing as my second sport, that kind of helped to keep my conditioning up. I’ve been boxing for six years and have been in Silver Gloves and Junior Olympics.

Boxing keeps you well-enduranced and your mental game up, which is important for golf. Doing those two sports at different ends of the spectrum helps each other.

“I had to play Parker Govern in the second round and I didn’t expect to pull out a win, but it felt good doing that and kind of built up my confidence

In the semifinals, Parker prevailed 2 and 1 over Speechley while Penrose won 4 and 2 over Manzo. And in the quarterfinals, Manzo won 2 and 1 over White, Speechley won by the same score over Brodzinski, Parker won 3 and 2 over Max Myszka and Penrose prevailed 1-up in 10 holes over Plainfield South’s Stefan Cetenovic.

About 21/2 years ago, Dan Catarello, a local chiropractor and former college wrestler, and Pat O’Connell, a longtime Joliet Township/Joliet Central wrestling coach, struck up a friendship.

Almost immediately, their conversation swung toward their passion. The questions was posed: Why shouldn’t Joliet Junior College reinstate its once-renowned wrestling program?

The program, which rose to national prominence during the tenure of Hall of Fame coach and administrator Henry Pillard, has been gone since 1987.

Catarello and O’Connell decided to get to work on reinstatement.

Now, it is nearing reality.

“The message we want to get out is it’s back and we need to raise money,” O’Connell said over lunch last week.

“The program produced 12 national champions and seven Hall of Famers.

“We’ve been to four board meetings, two or three meetings with Wayne (King, the JJC athletic director) and Yolanda Isaacs, the vice president of student development. Mike (O’Connell, Pat’s brother and a JJC trustee) has been very helpful, too.”

With the success of high school wrestling in the Joliet area, it stands to reason the JJC program can prosper.

“We have met with Mac McLaughlin, with Keith Healy from Providence, Josh Oster from Lockport and Rob Murphy from Wilmington. Murphy wrestled at JJC,” O’Connell said “We would have a quality program just from those schools. We have talked with (former area athletic directors) Larry Bernard and Jim Campisi in regard to the coach search.

“Right now, Harper and Triton are the only junior colleges with wrestling in the Chicago area.”

“We want to bring back local kids to wrestling,” said Catarello, who wrestled one year at Illinois State and three at Illinois in the ‘90s and also has been an assistant coach at Joliet West.

The women are not forgotten, either.

“The Oklahoma City team had a national champ (Stephanie Waters in 2010) who was from Joliet West. We have had several girls on the wrestling team at JT.” That’s the bottom line, to provide

opportunities through wrestling for students to continue their education and become contributors in society.

In addition to Pillard, JJC wrestling Hall of Famers include three-time Canadian Olympian Harry Geris, Bill Vail, Wayne Watson, Jeff Dillman and Mike Evans. The repeat national champions were Dillman and Evans in 1979 and 1980. SAN DIEGO – Giancarlo Stanton of the Miami Marlins has won the All-Star Home Run Derby with an impressive display of power that bested defending champion Todd Frazier of the Chicago White Sox. Stanton hit a record 61 homers in three rounds Monday night at Petco Park, including a shot estimated at 497 feet. The three-time All-Star is not on the NL roster for Tuesday night’s game after batting .233 with 20 homers and 50 RBIs before the break.

Stanton hit 20 home runs in the final round, including two off the third level of the Western Metal Supply Co. Building brick warehouse in the left-field corner. Two more landed just under the scoreboard in left.

SAN DIEGO – Ned Yost said his decision was “real easy.”

Easy? Perhaps. That’s because facing Chris Sale, whom Yost named as the American League starting pitcher for tonight’s All-Star Game at Petco Park, is anything but.

Watching the White Sox ace left-hander from a spectator’s viewpoint is baseball eye candy, Cubs right-hander Jake Arrieta said, which is another reason why Sale (14-3, 3.38 ERA), the major leagues’ wins leader, was a good choice by the Kansas City Royals manager to take the ball first in baseball’s July spectacle.

“Sale is one of the most fun guys to watch in baseball,’’ Arrieta said. “With his deception, the funky arm angle, the 7-foot slider he throws. … And he throws from low to upper 90s, and that’s not easy to deal with. He can throw a no-hitter every time he touches the mound. Whether you’re a

Cubs fan or Sox fan, for the city of Chicago, it’s going to be fun to watch that guy pitch and to see our guys go against him. That will be awesome.”

Even if Sale only pitches an inning, he’ll face at least two Cubs, with Ben Zobrist leading off and Kris Bryant batting third in Mets manager Terry Collins’ National League lineup.

Mokena breast cancer survivor prevented lymphedema despite high risk

NEW LENOX – Cheryl Otsuka was at high risk for developing lymphedema.

When the Mokena woman, now 65, was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer in 2006, she had two lumpectomies and the removal of 22 lymph nodes, 17 of which were cancerous. She also underwent chemotherapy and radiation.

The radiation therapy and the removal of a large number of lymph nodes increased Otsuka’s chances for developing lymphedema. According to the Mayo Clinic, lymphedema occurs when lymph vessels inadequately drain lymph fluid.

In the case of cancer patients, tumors may block the lymphatic vessels or lymph nodes become injured through radiation, which can cause scarring or inflammation. Lymph node removal can also cause lymphedema. Arms and legs are common lymphedema sites, but lymphedema can occur elsewhere, too.

But Otsuka was faithful with lymphedema prevention, which she learned through Siona Health Care Boutique in Hyde Park, Chicago, and has not had one incident. In April, the 25-year-old boutique opened a new location on the campus of Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox.

Siona Bitton, owner of Siona Health Care, certified orthotist and lymphedema therapist, said a doctor’s order is required before purchasing products and services, which are usually covered by insurance.

Bitton said her boutique is a “onestop shop” where cancer patients can buy a variety of items to assist in their cancer treatment, including products to prevent or treat lymphedema.

“The key is to be educated,” Bitton said. “Someone can have lymphedema right after surgery and someone can go 20 years down the road and all of a sudden have symptoms. Some may not develop it. But it’s always good to know how to prevent it.”

To prevent lymphedema, Otsuka read about the topic, attended several workshops, refrained from heavy lifting with her left arm – where her cancer was found – and wore her compression sleeve while gardening or flying. Decreased cabin pressure can cause swelling, she said.

“I wear my sleeve when I trim my bushes with the electric hedge trimmer,” Otsuka said. “I wear the compres-

The circumstances leading to Otsuka’s breast cancer diagnosis still astounds her. Otsuka found a lump on her left side while taking a shower. The lump turned out to be a cyst, but her surgeon recommended removing it.

Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox honors volunteers NEW LENOX – Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox honored its volunteers at the annual recognition luncheon held at the Bolingbrook Golf Club in Bolingbrook on April 24.

With four volunteer organizations: Advisory Board (Encore Resale Shop), Childerguild (gift shop),The Will County Union of King’s Daughters and Sons (founders of Silver Cross) and in-service volunteers, more than 780 area residents donate their time and talents to raise funds for the hospital and assist in daily operations.

Over the last year, they have given 55,000 hours of service and raised over $396,000 for the Silver Cross Foundation.

32 Going beyond Do Not Resuscitate Order Dear Dr. K: My husband has terminal cancer. He already has signed a do-not-resuscitate order. His doctor recently suggested he also complete a new form called a “POLST.” Can you explain what this is?

Dear Reader: As you know (but other readers might not), a Durable Do Not Resuscitate Order (DDNR) lets your husband’s medical team know he does not want CPR if his heart stops beating or he stops breathing. It’s usually for people who are near the end of their lives or have an illness that won’t improve. It takes the burden of decision-making off family members.

A POLST is a relatively new initiative that takes DDNRs even further. Like the DDNR, the POLST (Physician’s Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment) form turns your husband’s health care preferences into a medical order that must be followed by doctors, hospital staffers and paramedics.

The POLST provides instructions for treatments beyond CPR. For example, it covers such issues as when he wants the doctors to prescribe pain medicine, antibiotics and nutrition. It’s for use both inside and outside of the hospital setting.

The POLST is not a legal document.

It’s a medical order signed by your husband, your physician and a witness.

For it to be most effective, it must be in the possession of someone close to your husband when he is seriously ill, and major medical decisions need to be made.

Most likely, that someone will be you or his doctor.

Many states are just developing their POLST forms. They might call them by another name, such as a MOLST (Medical Orders for Life-Sustaining Treatment), POST (Physician Orders for Scope of

One important issue to consider is this: POLSTs can dictate very specific treatment that’s based on a person’s needs when he or she signs the form. But there’s no process in place to revisit the POLST if and when a person’s physical status changes. Suppose your husband no longer agreed with the instructions in his POLST, but was not able to communicate with physicians. In that situation, the POLST could be a problem.

It might help to have other documents in place that spell out your husband’s wishes. Not just medical orders, but legal documents that also fall under the umbrella term of an advance directive.

These include: • A living will. This legal document formalizes your treatment preferences if you’re unable to make your own health care decisions. It is drafted by an attorney. A living will can spell out the same detailed instructions as a POLST. • A health care proxy or surrogate. This is a legal document that names a person who is empowered to make decisions for your husband if he lacks the capacity to make them. Speaking openly with your husband about the care he wants might be the most important thing you can do to be sure he receives the treatment he wishes.

However, to qualify for the Winter Games, an activity must take place on ice or snow -- which was hard for bridge to claim.

In today’s deal, how does South avoid sliding to defeat in seven spades after West leads a low diamond?

The bidding is always easier when you can see all 52 cards. But after North rebid five spades over five diamonds, South thought the grand slam had to have play.

There seem to be 13 tricks: six spades, three hearts and four clubs.

The only danger is a bad club break.

If West has J-10-fourth, his holding can be nullified by finessing twice.

But what happens if East has J-10fourth of clubs?

Assuming East has the diamond ace (reasonable, given West’s lead), he can be squeezed between the minors as long as declarer does not play dummy’s diamond king at trick one.

South ruffs the diamond, draws trumps, and cashes his heart tricks.

What does he learn?

Here, he finds out that East started with three spades, at least three hearts and (from the bidding) six diamonds. So, he has at most one club.

Declarer cashes his club ace and plays a club to dummy’s nine (or captures West’s honor, ruffs the diamond king, and takes the club finesse).

Leave until as late as possible a suit that can be played in more than one way.
