Taste of Joliet attendance counted at ‘approximately 55,000’ attendees

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Taste of Joliet attendance this year was the best ever at about 55,000, a Joliet Park District official said Tuesday.

The district only had ballpark numbers for attendance this year and the second-highest Taste, which was approximately 51,000 in 2014.

Taste of Joliet, which ran June 24 to 26, enjoyed three days of warm, dry weather for headliner acts that included Styx and Trace Adkins.

District officials previously said they believed attendance was the best ever but speculated on the attendance numbers.

Executive Director Tom Carstens said Tuesday that the final number is “approximately 55,000.”

“The number is outstanding,” Carstens said. “We had a great weekend.

We had nothing but compliments about the event.”

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – One of the things that impresses the new superintendent of Joliet Public Schools District 86 about the district is that it has maintained a music program.

Theresa Rouse, who’s a musician herself, said that’s not often seen in education these days.

“Typically, when there are budget cuts, music is the first thing to go,” Rouse said. “That’s a strong point for me because when you look at education, you have to look at the whole child. It’s not just about language arts and math.”

Rouse has other goals for her tenure at District 86. She also wants to increase parental and community involvement as its new leader. Rouse comes from King City Union School District in California – more than 2,000 miles away – where she was last superintendent.

She has met with District 86 staff, reached out to community and state lawmakers, and plans to assess where the district is heading.

Former board President Gwendolyn Ulmer, who led the board when it began

searching for its next superintendent last fall, said the board only expects the best of Rouse.

“From what we learned of her in California, she is going to give us the best,” Ulmer said.

District 86 – and Joliet in general – is a big step up in terms of population for Rouse. King City has close to 13,000 people and the school district has about 2,600 students. District 86 has close to 12,000 students across 21 buildings.

But either way, the skills of school district leadership and working as an educator are the same, Rouse said.

“A friend of mine described it as if you have leadership skills to run a small district, you have leadership skills to run a larger one,” she said.

There also are similarities between King City Union School District and District 86, as both have high Hispanic student populations, use Common Core standards and have social-emotional needs to meet for children who come from low-income backgrounds.

“There’s a lot of pieces that are very similar. In a sense, King City is like a smaller microcosm of the greater setting that Joliet would be,” Rouse said.

More broadly, there are similarities between Illinois and California in terms of state funding challenges.

As Rouse was settling in last week, Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and opposing Democratic legislative leaders such as House Speaker Michael Madigan still were hashing out a spending plan that ended up being a stopgap measure that will – among other things – ensure schools will stay open another year.

Rouse said California was hit with a financial crisis in 2008 and school districts had to cut to the bone. The economy has since turned around, but there still are concerns, she said.

“I have worked in situations with very tight budgets before and you just tighten the belt and keep doing what we’re here to do, which is educate kids,” she said.

She said education is not a partisan issue.

“We have to be able to forget the labels that we carry and remember this is about the youth of the state of Illinois, and we have to educate them well and we need money to do that,” she said.

One benefit of being part of District

86 for Rouse is that she gets to be closer to her family, as Indiana is her home state. She also has found a home in the district to be closer to the community, left messages with state officials and attended a meeting of the Rotary Club of Joliet.

As the district transitions to new leadership, Rouse said the best thing to do first is assess its needs and review where there might be gaps.

“I’ve had a lot of good success with parent involvement and getting [the] community involved with schools and that’s going to be something I’m going to be working hard on,” she said.

She plans to meet with the community – as she did in February – more, and not just in one location, but many, given the size of the district, so she can come to the parents rather than the other way around.

It’s been a bit of a rush – her last school board meeting in King City was June 15 – but she says she’s here and ready.

“Everyone here has been helpful and accommodating and it’s been great. I’m ready to hit the ground running,” she said.

Cass Street bridge: Open as of Tuesday

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The closing of the Cass Street bridge has been delayed but not forgotten.

Motorists may have noticed Tuesday that the sign announcing the bridge was

to close Tuesday was no longer up.

The Illinois Department of Transportation, however, still plans to close the bridge to paint the deck – just not right away, Joliet Public Works Director James Trizna said.

“It sounds like definitely not this week,” Trizna said. “They are still plan-

ning to do the work.”

Trizna said the city still is waiting to hear from IDOT as to when the new date is, but he expected it would be sometime in July. IDOT has said the project is expected to be completed this fall. The state in June completed painting the deck of the Jefferson Street bridge.

Joliet council slows down Kipling apartment plan

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A plan for 156 apartments was delayed Tuesday amid neighborhood opposition.

The neighborhood opposing the project looks just like the new neighborhood he plans to build, developer Ed Mattox told the Joliet City Council.

But council members agreed there were too many unanswered questions and instructed Mattox to meet with residents of Timber Oaks before they vote on his plan for Tallgrass Estates.

Mattox, who owns Kipling Real Estate Management in Shorewood, also built Timber Oaks, a condominium and town home development at Interstate 55 Southeast Frontage Road and McDonough Street. Tallgrass Estates would be built across the street.

“What we’re looking to build is the same exact buildings across from where these residents live – the same architecture, the same buildings,” Mattox said.

The only difference, he said, is the new buildings would be for rent to suit

a market where home financing is not so easy to get as it was when Timber Oaks was built.

Timber Oaks residents said they were concerned that rental housing would lower the value of their homes.

Another problem, they said, is Timber Oaks isn’t done yet.

“Since 2007, I have looked out on a foundation,” said Rebecca Higgins, one of several Timber Oaks residents pointing out that their development contains open foundations for buildings never built.

“Are there going to be vacant properties sitting behind us as well?” Lisa Motisi asked.

Nicole Alkhatib noted that the plan for Tallgrass Estates includes a swimming pool and said, “We were supposed to get the pool that he speaks about, but he never built it.”

Councilwoman Jan Quillman made the motion to table the vote on the project and suggested that Mattox meet with the Timber Oaks people before he comes back to the council for a vote.

“There are too many unanswered

questions,” Quillman said.

Fountain on hold

The council also tabled a vote to redesign and repair the fountain at Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park in an apparent case of sticker shock.

Hitchcock Design Group offered to design and manage the project at a price not to exceed $75,000.

But Councilman Jim McFarland noted that the city has only budgeted $150,000 for the entire project.

“Our understanding was the $150,000 included the construction,” McFarland said.

McFarland chairs the Public Service Committee, which met before the council meeting and decided it better put the project on hold until it got a better grasp of the potential costs.

Councilman Larry Hug, another member of the Public Service Committee, noted that engineering typically is about 10 percent to 20 percent of the total cost of a project. He said the committee wanted staff to check out similar projects done elsewhere to see what they cost.

Plainfield man charged in Indiana murder

aschier@shawmedia.com ELKHART, Indiana – A Plainfield man is in jail after being charged with fatally shooting an Indiana man.

Tyrell J. Beavers, 18, faces one count of murder in the death of Brandon Jackson, 24, which occurred last month in Elkhart, Indiana, Elkhart Police Department Sgt. Chris Snyder said.

Law enforcement was dispatched at 3:25 a.m. June 23 to a house in the 200 block of West Garfield Avenue in Elkhart that had been divided into apartments, Snyder said.

When officers arrived, they found the front door of one of the apartments open, according to a department news release.

Police searched the Tyrell J. residence and found Beavers Jackson, who Snyder said had multiple gunshot wounds.

Jackson, who was from Elkhart, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Beavers was taken into custody Friday by Elkhart police, according to Snyder, who said Beavers was already in Elkhart at the time of his arrest. Beavers is being held at the Elkhart County Jail without bond.

The investigation into Jackson’s death is ongoing, Snyder said.

In November, Beavers was charged with robbery and theft of more than $500 in Joliet. Police said at the time that Beavers had put a 14-year-old boy in a chokehold as Beavers and a 17-year-old boy robbed the young teen of $725 the boy said he intended to use to buy marijuana in an incident at Bazz and Ruth Fitzgerald drives.

Beavers pleaded guilty to the theft charge in December and the state declined to prosecute the robbery charge, according to Will County court records. He was on probation at the time of the shooting, and a warrant for his arrest had been issued June 20 after a motion was filed to revoke his probation, court records stated.

Group announces rebranding, annual curb appeal contest

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The organization formerly known as Joliet/Will County Project Pride made two announcements last week.

First, it was officially rebranded as Project Acclaim, which calls for promotion of the image of the Joliet and Will County area and its people. It also seeks the engagement of residents and organizations to make their neighborhoods better and the partnering with individuals or organizations working toward the same end.

While the organization’s goals are

largely the same throughout its more than 30 years of existence, it was time for a fresh take.

“The timing was right,” Project Acclaim secretary John Zalanka said.

“Every once in a while it’s OK for an organization like us to do this. It’s a good thing. Enthusiasm through the ranks gets renewed.”

With the rebranding came a new logo and website, projectacclaim.com. It took more work than expected, Zalanka said, but he believes it’ll be worth it. Group leaders wanted to express, through the rebranding, the celebratory nature of what the organization does.

One way Project Acclaim does that is through its Neighborhood Heroes program. The 501(c)3 nonprofit announced last week it will accept nominations through July 31 for the curb appeal awards, now in its fifth year.

Winning residences will be chosen based on outstanding outside horticulture or obvious home exterior improvements that show pride in the property, street, block, neighborhood and community. The Neighborhood Hero program began with an emphasis on fam-

ilies showing pride in their east side neighborhoods. Since then, Neighborhood Heroes has extended recognition to all five of the Joliet Council Districts.

Winners will be recognized Aug. 16 at a Joliet City Council meeting. Neighborhood Heroes will be invited to attend the Project Acclaim Honors and Recognition Banquet scheduled for Nov. 2. Winners also receive acclaim in the form of a celebratory “Neighborhood Hero” yard sign.

Self-nomination is encouraged. The Project Acclaim website contains a full list of criteria on the Neighborhood Hero page and how to nominate a residence through the “Contact Us” menu.

Balich proposes firearms at board meetings

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Will County Board member said Tuesday that he has support from Republican and Democratic board members for his proposed resolution that would allow board members to carry concealed firearms in county buildings.

Steve Balich, R-Homer Glen, on June 14 introduced to the board’s Legislative and Policy Committee a rough draft of a resolution he wrote prior to the June 12 Orlando nightclub shooting. Board

members are not allowed to carry firearms in county buildings. Balich expects a formal discussion to take place Tuesday when the committee meets.

Balich believes allowing board members who have a valid Firearm Owners Identification card to carry concealed firearms would have significant benefits.

It would keep county buildings from being viewed as a “soft target” – one where would-be offenders only have to be concerned with a handful of armed law enforcement officers. Balich said a potentially armed board, composed

of 26 people, would lower or eliminate the loss of life and improve safety in the county’s public buildings.

He’s not saying each member should carry, but rather they should be able to if they so choose. He said an intruder wouldn’t know who was carrying.

“If 26 people are able to carry, that’s a big deterrent to a mass shooting,” Balich said.

Balich said the move also would save the county money, especially when a new 11-story courthouse is built and more security officers are required.

He referenced Illinois Statute 720

ILCS 5/21-6, which says anyone who carries or stores weapons in buildings or on land supported by public funds commits a Class A misdemeanor if they do so without prior written permission from the property’s chief security officer.

Balich said he interprets this to mean that a resolution is not necessary, and a chief security officer would have a “hard time” trying to give a reasonable denial to a properly licensed gun owner.

Judge: Hair testing OK in 2013 Joliet murder case

Judge Carla Alessio Policandriotes on Tuesday approved a motion to have evidence from two pieces of hair tested in the prosecution of Shane G. Smith.

The judge’s approval was necessary because the testing could “con-

sume” the hair so the defense would not be able to have it examined by their own experts.

But defense attorney Michael Renzi did not object to the state’s reShane G. quest.

Smith is charged with murdering his mother, Joan M. Smith, three years ago.

On Oct. 17, 2013, Joan Smith’s body was found in the Des Plaines River near Brandon Road in Joliet. Another relative had reported the 59-year-old Joliet woman missing a few days earlier. Shane Smith and his brother lived with their mother in the 1600 block of

Black Road.

Shane Smith allegedly gave police inconsistent information after his mother’s death was discovered and was arrested on charges of murder and concealing a homicide. Police said Shane Smith’s brother had no involvement in his mother’s slaying.

Will County Jail records show Shane Smith has been bald prior to his arrest. He is being held in jail on $5 million bond.

PLAINFIELD – A man whose wife disappeared from their home nine years ago is selling it.

A buyer is under contract to buy 13244 Red Star Drive in Plainfield from Craig Stebic, according to the real estate website redfin.com. Stebic listed the house through Coldwell Banker Honig-Bell on June 26 at $259,900.

The four-bedroom, three-bathroom house is where Lisa Stebic was last seen on the evening of April 30, 2007.

Craig told police that their children, Zac and Lexi Stebic, who were 10 and 12 at the time, had just left on a walk to a store to buy candy, and he was working in the backyard that evening when he thought he heard Lisa, then 37, leave for a nightly workout at Plainfield North High School.

When Lisa did not show up for work at the Lincoln Elementary School cafeteria the next morning, a neighbor reported her missing to Plainfield police, according to previous Herald-News reports. Police informed Craig about the missing per-

son report, and he came to the station a couple of hours later and made his own report.

Lisa’s purse and cellphone were gone, but her car still was in the driveway and her cigarettes and sunglasses had been left behind. Police said there has been no activity on her phone or credit cards since she vanished.

The Stebics had been married for 14 years when Lisa disappeared, but were divorcing, although they still lived together.

Since 2007, Craig has remained the only identified suspect in his wife’s disappearance, but has never been charged in the incident.

According to real estate listings, the house, which was built in 1999, has vaulted ceilings, hardwood floors, a finished basement, a whirlpool tub and a wood-burning fireplace. The 8,712-square-foot lot is in Plainfield School District 202. Several appliances were included in the sale listing.

JOLIET – A 17-year-old girl was hit as gunfire was exchanged early Tuesday outside a Joliet gas station.

Joliet Police Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said officers were called about 1:55 a.m. to the BP Gas Station at 6 McDonough St. “Officers arrived and found a pool of blood between two gas pumps. In the intersection of McDonough and Chicago streets there were seven shell casings of one caliber, six of another and the half-loaded magazine of a semi-automatic handgun,” Gregory said.

About the same time, friends brought the girl to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet with bullet wounds to her right arm and right leg. Gregory

said the injuries were not life-threatening.

“She said she’d been at the gas station and heard the shots but didn’t see who was shooting,” he said.

A 55-year-old woman who is in a wheelchair also told police that her prosthetic leg may have been struck by a spent round. Gregory said she was next to a car in the north end of the parking lot when the shooting started.

“She was lighting a cigarette for someone in the vehicle when the glass windshield shattered,” Gregory said.

“She fell out of her wheelchair and lay on the ground. She said her prosthetic leg has a new dent that may have been hit by a ricochet.”

LOCAL BRIEFS New Lenox motorcyclist killed, Matteson man cited in Homer Glen crash

A New Lenox motorcyclist died Friday after a crash in Homer Glen.

William Johnson, 57, was pronounced dead at 8:50 p.m. at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood as a result of multiple injuries suffered in the incident, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The crash occurred about 5 p.m. Friday at Southwest Highway and Spring Meadows Drive, Will County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Tom Budde said.

The incident began when Michael Messer, 26, of Matteson, was driving his fourdoor vehicle east on Southwest Highway approaching Spring Meadows Drive and became momentarily distracted, Budde said. As Messer returned his attention to the road, Budde said, he saw traffic ahead of his vehicle had stopped and swerved into the westbound lane in an attempt to avoid a crash, but hit Johnson’s motorcycle and several other vehicles.

Messer is charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and improper lane use, among other citations, Budde said. An investigation is pending and further charges may be forthcoming, Budde

said, although he clarified that the incident is not believed to be related to alcohol or drug use. Johnson was the only person injured in the crash.

Peotone coach charged for allegedly sexting with student

PEOTONE – A junior high basketball coach was arrested Friday after authorities alleged he sent inappropriate text messages to a 14-year-old girl.

Samuel H. Burks, 48, was arrested on two counts of child grooming after Will County sherSamuel iff’s police searched his home on Mallard Lane in H. Burks Peotone, sheriff’s spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said.

Hoffmeyer said sheriff’s deputies were contacted June 24 after the girl’s mother discovered text messages being sent from Burks over the past few months.

Burks is a girls basketball coach at Peotone Junior High School.

Burks was booked into the Will County Jail and released after posting $100,000 bond.

JOLIET – It is not a requirement for the student receiving the Latino Bar Association of Will County scholarship to study law.

But it turns out that’s exactly what Sam Gutierrez plans to do after earning a political science degree from Miami University in Ohio.

The Latino Bar Association of Will County was started in 2014 to promote legal education within the Latino community and offer professional forums and networking opportunities for Latino attorneys.

“We’ve gotten really good support from the [overall] legal community and judges,” Munoz said.

Florine Bayless (nee Jones), born May 19, 1926, to Esau and Hettie E. Jones in Bay Springs, MS. She departed this life on Saturday, July 2, 2016.

Florine confessed Christ at an early age and was united with the Blue Ridge Methodist Church in Bay Springs, MS. Florine was united in marriage to Booker T. Bayless Sr. in 1945, and to this union 10 children were born. In 1951, she and her husband and the family moved to Joliet. In 1952, she united with the Mount Zion Baptist Church, under the pastorate of the late Rev. Hill and Rev. Dr. Isaac Singleton Sr. She was preceded in death by one brother, Richard (infancy); her husband, Booker T.; her parents; one son, Booker Jr.; and one daughter, Glenda.

She leaves to the care of the Almighty God, who does everything well, four sons and four daughters, Mac W., David, Donald (Chiquita) Bayless, all of Joliet, and Delane of Aurora, Phanelophe (Early) Mathis, Hettie J. Fox and Francine, all of Joliet, and Felechia (Terrance) Mickles of Elwood; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

CAESAR BIANCHETTA Caesar Bianchetta, age 95, passed away peacefully July 3, 2016, at his home in Joliet.

He was born in Italy in 1921 to the late Frank and Prosperina Bianchetta (U.S. citizens). At age 13, he and his family settled in Georgetown.

He attended Eastern Illinois University, then at age 19, he moved to Joliet for work. He met his future wife on Dec. 7, 1941, at the South Side Civic Club in Joliet. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on Sept. 25, 1942. While on a three-day pass, he married Elizabeth “Betty” Aimaro on July 18, 1943. He then was sent to England with the 96th Bombardment Group where he was stationed for the duration of the war. At the end of the war, he returned to Joliet, where he spent the next 71 years raising his family and rooting for the Cubs to win a World Series.

He worked for General Refractories Corp. for over 40 years as a machinist, was an impassioned “union man,” coached Little League Baseball, was a lifelong member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church of Joliet, a member of Stone City Post VFW 2199, an active member and former officer of American Legion Post 1080, caught many fish with his sons and grandsons, was a voracious reader and grew the best tomatoes in town. His wife of 72 years was at his side when he passed.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Elizabeth; sons, Victor (Sharon) Bianchetta and Robert (Janet) Bianchetta; brother, Steven (Pat) Bianchetta; sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Aimaro; grandsons, Anthony (Holly) Bianchetta and Christopher (Kristina) Bianchetta; great-grandchildren, Noah, Alexander and Everley; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Beverly; brother, Ernest (Lenora) Bianchetta; brother-in-law, Peter Aimaro; and great-grandsons, Jacob and Aiden Bianchetta.

The family would like to offer a special thank you to Frank and Sherri Bianchetta for all their help and support to both Caesar and Betty over the years. They would also like to express their

Dorothy married Richard A. Erickson of Plainfield on Nov. 22, 1947. Together they made their home in Plainfield, Plattville and Minooka.

Richard preceded her in death in 1985.

Dorothy was a proud homemaker who cherished time spent with her family and church family. She will be remembered as a loving and caring mother, grandmother, a wonderful sister and loyal friend.

WILLIAM EDGAR GREEN Born: Oct. 10, 1934 Died: July 3, 2016

William “Bill” Edgar Green, a resident of Plainfield, was born in Chicago on Oct. 10, 1934, and went to be with the Lord, July 3, 2016. He was the second of four siblings. He grew up living on Chicago’s south side and lived with his beloved aunt, uncle and cousins when his parents moved to Indiana.

Bill called them his second family. He attended Edward Tilden Career Community Academy High School and served in the U.S. Army from 1954-1956 while stationed in Augsburg, Germany.

After completing military service, Bill briefly

worked as a message courier for the Illinois Central and Sante Fe Railroad. He subsequently, served as a truck driver in the meat packaging industry for 30 years, briefly worked as a retail security guard and, most recently, served as custodian for 10 years at the Walker Grove Elementary School in the Plainfield School District.

Bill married his first wife, Delores Creamer, in 1969; she died in 1990. They had no children.

Bill married Leota Donoho in 1992 and was welcomed by four stepdaughters. The family subsequently expanded to include six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Bill was a lifelong sports fan watching nearly every White Sox game. An avid bowler, Bill participated in numerous leagues for more than 60 years. Most recently, he played in leagues at Joliet Town and Country Lanes. He proudly scored numerous 200+ games. He was a member of Teamsters Union Local No. 710 and VFW Post 2604. He was a founder and charter member of Victory Baptist Church, where he formerly served as deacon, choir member and frequently requested vocal soloist.

Bill is survived by his wife, Leota Donoho-Green; stepdaughters, Gloria (Ron) Mayfield, Glenda Davis, Janet (Craig) Gramm and Jane Donoho; sister, Rosie (Gerald) Bogan; sisterin-law, Mary Ann Green; grandchildren, Buck (Dara) and Brett (Amanda) Mayfield, Brooke (Stephen) Sitterly, Felicia (Adam) Perkins and Brandon Gramm; great-grandchildren, Nate, Cassie, Skylar, Patrick, Jacob and Matthew Mayfield; and numerous nieces and nephew who fondly call him dad.

Mary Burgess “Marge” (nee Wilhelmi), age 91, of Coal City, passed away peacefully, Saturday, June 25, 2016, at the home of her daughters with her family at her side.

Born Nov. 25, 1924, in Joliet, she was the daughter of George Adam and Lillian (nee Heitkotter) Wilhelmi. She was a graduate of St. Charles Hospital School of Nursing in Aurora, and worked for many years as a registered nurse for the former St. Joseph Hospital, Joliet. She will be most remembered for operating the Gay 90s Restaurant along with her husband and family in Coal City, until the business was lost to a fire in 1976. Raising her family, running the restaurant and keeping up with the farm were her greatest joys.

Surviving are her loving children, Karin (James) Wagner, Mary Pat Burgess, Denise Trotter-Zynda, Philip Cragg (Monica) Burgess, Lisa Burgess and Nanette Burgess; eight grandchildren, Christopher (Stacy) Wagner, Nathan Wagner, Katherine (Larry) Kargol, Matthew (Autumn) Trotter, Caitlynne Burgess, Colleen Burgess, Megan (Brad) Chamberlin and Jesse Filadelfia; and nine great-grandchildren, Beckett and Marlowe Wagner, Logan, Jackson and Baby K Kargol, Parker and Isaac Trotter and Jameson and Henry Chamberlin.

Dozens shot in Chicago over weekend

The Associated Press CHICAGO – The July 4 weekend in Chicago ended with 50 people shot, three fatally, after the police force flooded the streets with thousands of officers and arrested dozens of gang members.

On Tuesday, a day after pointing to the statistics as “progress” in the fight against the city’s street violence, Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said there were three fewer homicides this July 4 weekend than last year’s holiday weekend. And while there were 50 shooting victims compared with 48 in 2015, he noted July 4 fell on Monday this year, adding one more day to the holiday weekend.

The weekend also ended with three fewer homicides and six fewer shooting victims than the Memorial Day week-

end.

The dramatic rise in the number of homicides and shootings in the first half of 2016 compared with the same time last year – culminating in 72 homicides and 447 shooting victims in June alone – had raised fears in some of the city’s most dangerous neighborhoods that the long holiday weekend would be particularly bloody.

But after 5,000 officers hit the streets – 1,000 to 2,000 more than a typical summer weekend – there was a feeling of relief.

“We were on a pace this year that we thought the violence was going to go off the charts,” said the Rev. Marshall Hatch, a prominent minister on Chicago’s West Side. “I think it would have been a lot worse out there if it weren’t for these [police department]efforts.”

Prominent minister on Chicago’s West Side Johnson suggested the department’s crime-fighting measures he implemented over the weekend paid off. But he hinted that it might be difficult to dispatch the same number of officers to the streets every weekend during the summer, when the number of violent crimes typically climbs.

“Some parts of it [are] sustainable and some will be a bit of a challenge,” Johnson said.

The weekend did bring into focus a cornerstone of the department’s strategy to reduce the violence: A concerted effort to target the city’s street gangs.

In two raids last week, the latter ending late Friday, the department reported that more than 110 gang members were arrested on drug and gun charges.

The vast majority of those are on a list of people police have identified as being most likely to be suspects or victims in gun violence. The department hopes that as more of those people are taken into custody, the number of shootings will drop.

Johnson has said there will be more raids in the coming months like the ones the department conducted last week.

Gary retired from the Will County Sheriff’s Department as a sheriff’s deputy after 25½ years of service. He was honored with several awards including Deputy of the Year Award and Life Saving Award. He was a lifelong dedicated member of the Roman Catholic Church.

FBI advises no charges in Clinton email probe The ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON – The FBI won’t recommend criminal charges against Hillary Clinton for her use of a private email server while secretary of state, agency Director James Comey said Tuesday, lifting a major legal threat to her presidential campaign. But Comey called her actions “extremely careless” and faulted the agency she led for a lackadaisical approach to handling classified material.

Comey’s decision almost certainly brings the legal part of the issue to a close and removes the threat of criminal charges. Attorney General Loretta Lynch said last week that she would accept the recommendations of the FBI director and of career prosecutors.

“No charges are appropriate in this case,” Comey said in making his announcement.

But Comey made that statement after he delivered a blistering review of Clinton’s actions, saying the FBI found that 110 emails were sent or received on Clinton’s server containing classified information.

He added it was possible that people hostile to the U.S. had gained access to her personal email account.

“Although we did not find clear evidence that Secretary Clinton or her colleagues intended to violate laws governing the handling of classified information, there is evidence that they were extremely careless in their handling of very sensitive, highly classified information,” he said.

Comey contradicted Clinton’s past explanations in the case that she had turned over all of her emails and that she had never sent or received any emails that were classified at the time. The FBI chief said that in the course of the investigation, 110 emails in 52 email chains were determined to contain classified information at the time they were sent or received. He also found that

Yet after criticizing Clinton, her aides and the department for their actions, he said that after looking at similar circumstances in past inquiries, the FBI believed that “no reasonable prosecutor would bring such a case.”

Comey made the announcement just three days after the FBI interviewed Clinton in a final step of its yearlong investigation into the possible mishandling of classified information. He said he shared the FBI’s findings with no one else in the government before making his announcement, which came just hours before Clinton traveled with President Barack Obama on Air Force One to campaign together for the first time this year.

The declaration from Comey is unlikely to wipe away many voters’ concerns about Clinton’s trustworthiness, especially since the FBI director so thoroughly criticized her actions before delivering his verdict.

“There is evidence to support a conclusion that any reasonable person in Secretary Clinton’s position ... should have known that an unclassified system was no place” for sensitive conversations, Com-

Nor will the recommendation stop Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, who has called for criminal charges, from continuing to make the server a campaign issue or suggesting Clinton was helped by a Democratic administration. Clinton campaign spokesman Brian Fallon said it was pleased with the decision but reiterated that it was a “mistake” for Clinton to use personal email.

Clinton’s personal email server, which she relied on exclusively for government and personal business, has dogged her campaign since The Associated Press revealed its existence in March 2015.

She has repeatedly said that no email she sent or received was marked classified, but the Justice Department began investigating last summer following a referral from the inspectors general for the State Department and the intelligence community.

No heroes in Springfield SPRINGFIELD – My disgust with our state’s politicians – both Republicans and Democrats – reached a climax this past week as I watched lawmakers and the governor congratulate themselves for doing next to nothing.

They passed a six-month budget that spends too much and puts off the decision on raising taxes until after the November election.

Folks, when taxes are left in the hands of a bunch of lame ducks, expect to be goosed.

The temporary budget is the prelude to what will be one of the largest tax increases in the state’s history.

Oh, the lawmakers aren’t saying it, but the numbers in their budget tell the story: it spends more than the state takes in.

Of course this act of political cowardice is being repackaged by spin-masters as a “bipartisan compromise.”

The only thing being compromised is our state’s future.

A lot of people have suffered over the past year, and one has to ask: For what?

For the first time in the state’s 198-year history, Illinois went an entire year without a budget.

The fiscal year ended June 30 with state government hanging together with a patchwork of court orders, an education bill, chewing gum and bailing wire.

A year ago, no one thought Gov. Bruce Rauner could keep state government running a full year without a budget, but he did it.

College kids didn’t receive financial aid, social service agencies struggled, state universities cut positions and just about anyone who did business with the state waited months to get paid.

But schools continued to operate, state workers continued to be paid, inmates continued to be locked up. And state workers continued to get their pensions.

Rauner and House Speaker Mike Madigan were at loggerheads.

THE FIRST

AMENDMENT

VIEWS Scott Reeder Rauner said he would not support raising taxes unless the Legislature first passed business and political reforms.

Madigan just wanted to raise taxes.

The Speaker’s minions passed a budget that spent billions more than the state had.

Rauner vetoed it.

And the two spent a year trading political punches.

Then Madigan raised the specter that maybe schools wouldn’t open this August. His daughter, the attorney general, pondered whether to go to court and keep state workers from being paid.

And folks in the administration wondered whether there would be money to feed prison inmates.

The state was on the brink of moving from crisis to calamity.

Madigan smelled weakness and pounced.

Madigan extracted a pledge of $250 million more in local and state dollars to fund that mismanaged sump hole called Chicago Public Schools.

And Rauner got a face-saving fig leaf that Chicago wouldn’t get all of that money unless the Legislature enacted pension reform – after the election.

If you believe we will see meaningful pension reform in 2016, you probably also believe in the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy and Santa Claus.

It needs to happen. But I don’t see it happening this year.

Illinoisans have suffered this past year. And we don’t have a single reform to show for it.

I keep looking for heroes in Springfield, but I just can’t find any.

Why didn’t The Herald-News join newspapers from across Illinois when Michael Madigan and Rahm Emanuel were spending money they did not have to get votes by promising free stuff, raises and pension plans they knew were impossible to deliver?

Illinois is now the 47th worst financial state out of 50. This did not happen after Rauner got elected,

it happened over the years before he was elected, by reckless spending and “impossible to keep” promises.

During all those years of unimaginable spending and promises, not one paper wrote an article about the spending like, “Enough – stop the madness!”

Where were all these concerned newspapers when the damage was being done? And you wonder why people have no trust in the media.

Shortstop Rodriguez flashes leather, helps lift Slammers to East lead

dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The value of defense in baseball – especially defense up the middle – cannot be denied.

That part of the game may not carry the glamour of the big slugger or the overpowering pitcher, but it often is the No. 1 determining factor in whether a team wins.

Before joining the Joliet Slammers, shortstop Alfredo Rodriguez spent three seasons in the Milwaukee Brewers’ system.

Slammers manager Jeff Isom had

been in the Brewers’ organization for five years. When Milwaukee released Rodriguez before the start of the 2015 season, Isom did not hesitate to pursue him.

Rodriguez, who played his college baseball at Maryland, was solid last summer, but the Slammers suffered through a down year, which did not sit well with him. As good as he was defensively throughout his career, his glove work this season has observers marveling.

An infield that includes Rodriguez, third baseman Jake Gronsky, second baseman Carter Bell and first

baseman Marc Flores is a huge reason behind the Slammers’ surge to a 28-18 record and first place in the Frontier League East, entering Tuesday night’s game at Silver Cross Field against the Washington Wild Things.

“Defense has always been a priority for me,” Rodriguez said. “It’s the best part of my game. I pride myself in making it the best it can be. Me, Jake, Carter, we all get after it defensively. I think that’s helping us succeed.”

“We’re just trying to prepare every day. We’re working together in the infield. I feel like I can help Jake and

Carter, and even Flores.”

Rodriguez, who along with Bell, Flores and center fielder Charlie White was voted to the Frontier League All-Star Game, entered Tuesday having made three errors all season, handling 228 of 231 chances. That works out to a .987 fielding percentage, a remarkable figure for a shortstop.

Last season, his first in Joliet, he finished with a respectable .965 fielding mark. This year, though, he has taken his glove work to a new level.

Line, Anderson dominating in Pro Stock

cherron@shawmedia.com To say that it’s been a special season for KB Racing and Summit Racing teammates Jason Line and Greg Anderson would be quite an understatement.

The two have dominated the rest of the competition in the NHRA’s Pro Stock division and hope to keep that up this weekend at the K&N Filters Route 66 NHRA Nationals at Route 66 Raceway.

Midway through the 24-race Mello Yello Series and with six events remaining before the six-race Countdown to the Championship gets underway, Line and Anderson have combined to win all 12 races and also appeared in all but four of the finals to both clinch playoff spots.

Line, who won world championships in 2006 and 2011, has won seven times and has four second-place efforts this year. He appeared in eight-straight finals to open 2016, winning five times, and has captured victories in the last two races. He’s competed in six finals at Joliet, winning three times.

After finishing second in the point standings in 2014, he won just twice last season. However this year, he’s already piled up 1,389 points to lead the division by 115 points over Anderson after appearing in each final but the June 5 race

“Our team is very good defensively.

We have a Double-A defense out there.”

Led by Rodriguez, the Slammers committed only 27 errors in their first 46 games. Bell and Gronsky committed four each, again, low figures for the positions they play.

As often happens, victories have followed good defense.

Rodriguez also is doing his job offensively. He is hitting in the 2-hole behind leadoff man White, and his priority is to get on base.

“You can always improve, but it’s important that you stay consistent at the plate,” Rodriguez said. “You try to get into good counts and take advantage of it. I have to get on base. The guys behind me have driven me in all year.”

Rodriguez, who has played in every game in his year and a half here, entered Tuesday batting .295 (52 for 176) with five doubles, a triple, a home run and 16 RBIs. He had stolen 13 bases in

driver in Pro Stock with 83 wins, ranking two behind Bob Glidden. In races at Joliet, Anderson has one win and has finished second six times.

“I like the design of Route 66 Raceway,” Anderson said. “When you do a burnout, the smoke hangs there and you drive back through it and it’s really cool for the fans.

“I haven’t had much luck there. It’s a great track, I just haven’t had the best luck. It was one of the last tracks for me to conquer. I had many runner-up finishes, but it took me awhile to win.

We love this class because of the competition. We love the challenge and the strategy that comes with running these cars.”

Bo Butner, who sits in third place with 796 points, took second to Line twice while Allen Johnson, who won at Joliet last year and is fourth with 719 points, finished second to Anderson in one race.

Drew Skillman (683), Vincent Nobile (613), Chris McGaha (557), Shane Gray (532), Jeg Coughlin (528) and Alex Laughlin (498) round out the top 10 while Enders ranks 11th with 490 points.

The top 10 leaders in points through 18 races make the playoffs. McGaha also took second to Line in a race this season while five-time world champ Coughlin has won five times at Route 66 Raceway.

at Epping, where he lost in the semifinals to Anderson. The last driver to have clinched a playoff spot after just eight races was Tony Schumacher in 2008 in Top Fuel.

“It’s a special place for me since I beat Greg Anderson for the very first time at Route 66,” Line joked. “We like the weather in Chicago since it provides really great racing conditions.

“You have to press every day or you will fall. You can’t think since you’re

winning you can slack off or you will fall behind.”

One year after finishing in second place in the standings to two-time champion Erica Enders, Anderson has won five times, placed second in four other events and reached the semifinals two other times.

The four-time world champion, who won titles in 2003-05 and 2010, has 1,274 points so far this season.

Anderson is the third-winningest

17 attempts and carried a strong .392 on-base percentage.

“This season and last for our team is like night and day,” he said. “It’s more fun now. From B.P. (batting practice) to the end of the game, we are a closer unit.

“We try to keep it loose, especially in the infield. In the end, we are playing a kids’ game and we want to have fun with it. I feel blessed and happy to have this opportunity.”

Rodriguez said he was glad to see two recent teammates, right fielder Boo Vazquez (Kansas City) and right-handed pitcher Liam O’Sullivan (Arizona), both of whom signed last week with major league organizations, get their opportunity.

“I’m happy for the guys who got a chance to chase their dreams,” he said.

“Boo and Liam were great teammates.

I never saw anybody hit grand slams in back-to-back games (as Vazquez did shortly before he left). I was happy to get to know them.”

Is Rodriguez thinking about that possibility for himself?

“My approach is if the opportunity presents itself, I’ll be ready,” he said.

“If anyone needs a player, we have guys who are just a phone call away.

But we know it’s out of our hands.”

JOLIET – After falling behind early, the Joliet Slammers went on a scoring burst which put them in a good spot to win the opener of their threegame series with Washington.

But a three-run lead with three innings remaining slipped away and the Wild Things rallied to capture an 8-7 Frontier League victory on Tuesday at Silver Cross Field.

Joliet gave up three runs in the first inning and one more in the second to trail 4-0 but it used five-straight singles in the fourth to tie things and then moved ahead with a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to grab a 7-4 advantage.

Washington (24-21), which pulled to within three games of the Slammers (28-19) for first place in the East Division standings, got an RBI double from Chris Grayson and a two-run homer from David Popkins to grab a quick 3-0 lead against Slammers starter Spencer Medick, who allowed four runs and six hits in five innings.

But in Joliet’s fourth, Marc Flores (2 for 5) started a streak of five-straight singles. Joe Staley followed with a hit before Rock Shoulders (2 for 3) got an RBI single. After Jake Gronsky (2 for 4) singled home a run, Casey Fletcher (2 for 3) followed with a two-run hit to tie things.

The Slammers moved in front in the bottom of the fifth when Bell led off with a single, Staley hit into a force and then Shoulders tripled into the rightfield corner to make it a 5-4 game.

The 24-year old was a 30th-round selection of White Sox in the 2014 draft out of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, in Honolulu.

Flores also recognized as Frontier League Player of the Week. He had 12 hits in his 24 at-bats during the week of June 27.

Another Slammers infielder will start at second base in the All-Star Game. Carter Bell spent six seasons in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization and owns a .348 batting av-

erage, second in the league. He leads the league with 43 RBIs. Bell, who is in his first full season with the Slammers, also was a Frontier League AllStar in 2014.

Slammers shortstop Alfredo Rodriguez and outfielder Charlie White also will join the East Division team. Rodriguez is in his second season with Joliet. He has a .295 batting average, 16 RBIs and 13 stolen bases.

The shortstop spent three years in the Milwaukee Brewers organization after being drafted in the 17th round

of the 2012 draft our of Maryland.

Outfielder Charlie White has a .281 batting average in 48 games played.

He has 34 runs scored and 18 RBIs. The Naperville native played with the Boise Hawks in the summer of 2014 before joining the Slammers.

The Cubs selected White in the 21st round of the 2014 draft after he earned All-ACC second-team honors his sophomore and junior years at Maryland. He departed college as the Terps’ all-time stolen base leader with 86.

5 Cubs elected to start in All-Star Game

The Associated Press NEW YORK – The Cubs became the first team since the 1976 Cincinnati Reds’ Big Red Machine to have five players voted as All-Star Game starters when their entire infield earned the honor Tuesday along with center fielder Dexter Fowler.

First baseman Anthony Rizzo, second baseman Ben Zobrist, shortstop Addison Russell and third baseman Kris Bryant also were elected. The only other team to start four infielders was the 1963 St. Louis Cardinals.

Rizzo led NL players with 3.2 million votes, and Zobrist won the closest race by finishing 88 votes ahead of Washington’s Daniel Murphy. Seven Cubs were picked in all, with Jake Arrieta and Jon Lester selected for the National League pitching staff. Fowler hopes to recover from a hamstring strain that has sidelined him since June 18.

The July 12 game at San Diego’s Petco Park will feature 11 first-time starters, the most since 2005. In a sign of the sport’s generational change, 12 of the 17 elected starters are 26 or younger.

Boston has six All-Stars, including four starters. Designated hitter David Ortiz, who is retiring at the end of the season, became a 10-time All-Star and is joined by a trio of first-timers: shortstop Xander Bogaerts and outfielders Jackie Bradley Jr. and Mookie Betts. Miller and Wright are among seven first-time All-Stars on the AL pitching staff, joined by Tampa Bay’s Alex Colome, Toronto’s Marco Estrada, Baltimore’s Brad Brach, Houston’s Marco Estrada and Cleveland’s Danny Salazar.

Petco Park is the second of four straight NL ballparks to host the AllStars, following Cincinnati last year and ahead of Miami in 2017 and Washington in 2018. Maddon got ejected for the second time this season. David Ross was batting in the second, took a 3-0 pitch and started heading to first, only for plate umpire Jerry Meals to call a strike.

Maddon got tossed by Meals as he protested from the dugout, then came out for a spirited argument that lasted a few more minutes.

Joey Votto added two RBIs and Jay Bruce homered as the Reds beat the Cubs for the second time in 12 games this season after nearly blowing a 5-0 lead. Cincinnati won for just the third time in 14 games overall.

Cozart doubled and scored in the fourth. He also went deep in Monday’s loss.

Kris Bryant hit his major league-leading 25th home run for Chicago. Addison Russell went deep twice, giving him two homers in the past three games. Javier Baez also connected against Brandon Finnegan (4-7).

Finnegan gave up five runs and five hits in five innings, including four homers that matched Jon Moscot’s season-high for Cincinnati at Colorado on May 31. He had lasted a career-low 21/3 innings against Washington in his previous start.

CHICAGO – Carlos Beltran celebrated his ninth All-Star selection with three of New York’s season-high 20 hits, and the Yankees cooled off the White Sox with a, 9-0, win on Tuesday night.

Chase Headley hit a two-run homer for the second straight day for New York, which improved to 2-3 on a 10-game trip that takes the club to the AllStar break. Austin Romine also connected, and Masahiro Tanaka (6-2) pitched into the eighth inning while improving to 4-1 with a 1.14 ERA in eight road starts.

Beltran and relievers Andrew Miller and Dellin Betances were picked for the AL roster before the win, and Sox ace Chris Sale joined the trio.

The Sox (43-41) had won three in a row and six of eight, but it never recovered after Carlos Rodon (2-7) labored through five innings. The left-hander matched season highs by allowing six runs and 12 hits while dropping to 0-3 with a 4.93 ERA in his last six starts.

Up your rib game

With a few easy steps, smoking your own ribs can be as simple as grilling them

Blot the ribs dry with paper towels. Brush the ribs lightly with the apple-cider vinegar over both the front and back of ribs. Set aside for 5 minutes. Sprinkle ribs liberally on both sides with rib rub and let sit, covered lightly, for 15 minutes.

Place ribs (bone side down) in the center of the cooking grate or in a rib holder/rack, making sure they are not over a direct flame.

Grill covered (at about 250 degrees F., if your grill has a thermometer) for about 3-3½ hours or until meat is tender and the rack bends easily but doesn’t break.

Leave ribs untended for the first 60 minutes – this means no peeking; very important when using wood chips. Check ribs after an hour and then every 30 minutes or so. If the ribs start to burn on the edges, stack them on top of one another in the very center of the grill and lower your fire/heat slightly.

Twenty minutes before serving, un-stack ribs, if necessary, and brush with barbecue sauce. You also can brush with a mixture of barbecue sauce and beer or apple cider – this becomes a “mop” which is thinner than traditional barbecue sauce.

Remove ribs from grill and let rest 10 minutes before cutting into individual or 2-3 rib portions. Warm remaining sauce in a saucepan and serve on the side, if desired.

There was a year I demonstrated how to make ribs eight times on the same national morning show. Each time, I would remind them we did ribs the last time, and the producer would say, “I know but everyone loves ribs!”

And that is true.

The bonus: They’re easy to make – and easy to smoke – at home. You don’t need a smoker to smoke ribs. All you need is a grill, some soaked wood chips and great meaty ribs.

If you are like most people, and only cook baby back ribs, up your rib game and try St. Louis ribs, which are trimmed to remove the flap of meat on the underside of the breast bone and squared off to more easily fit on the grill. Spareribs are cut from the belly or side of the pig. They are longer and fattier than back ribs.

Once you decide on which rib to buy, there are a few things to remember. First, make sure each slab weighs at least 3 pounds and that the ribs have a nice layer of meat covering the bone.

Slabs of ribs that are factory-cut often have “bone shine,” or areas of the rack where the blade hit the bone and cut off all the meat, exposing the bone.

Second, buy the highest quality, freshest product available. If you have a local butcher who cuts the meat, frequent his or her shop. If you don’t have a local butcher, go to a high-volume grocery store that rotates with fresh product every day. Be sure to look at the expiration date on the label and give your purchases the old-fashioned smell test. If it smells off, it is probably old. I prefer buying ribs that are cryovac-ed as they are generally the freshest choice.

In this recipe, I am cooking these ribs at a more traditional smoking temperature of 250 degrees F. because every backyard griller wants to approximate the barbecue of the competition circuit at least once. But more often, I smoke the ribs at a higher temperature of 300-325 degrees F. Both work well, but you get a crispier, more roasted flavor at the higher temperature as the fat renders out completely.

It’s really a question of style and taste, as both are good.

I use soaked wood chips regardless of the temperature or the fuel. Because the wood is the final flavoring element, it is as important as the quality of the meat and the rub. If you are using

a gas grill, you can make a smoker box out of heavy-duty aluminum foil and fill it with wet wood chips as the gas grill preheats with all burners on high. The chips will start to smoke and smolder and will continue even as you reduce the heat to a medium-low indirect heat. Make sure to place the chips in the upper-left hand corner of the grill under the cooking grates. If you place the chips on the cooking grates, they are so far from the heat element they won’t smoke.

Also, wet the chips so they will smoke and not erupt into flames. On a charcoal grill, simply toss a handful of wet wood chips on both sides of the gray-ashed charcoal when you put the ribs on the grill.

And, don’t forget, ribs can only be smoked using indirect heat.

The final thing to know is the best way to test for doneness is to make sure that the meat has receded from the end of the bones. You should be

able to bend the rack without breaking it in pieces. The best ribs should be tender but have a little chew left.

Gas Grill Smoked Ribs

Start to finish: Four hours Serves 6-8 Grilling Method: Indirect/Medium-Low Heat 4 racks St. Louis ribs, about 3 pounds a slab 1/2 cup apple-cider vinegar 1/4 cup St. Louis Rib Rub (see below) or favorite spice rub Soaked wood chips, such as apple or hickory Favorite barbecue sauce, optional Beer or apple cider Build a charcoal fire or preheat gas grill. Remove silver skin from back of ribs, if desired.

Set up the grill for indirect heat, and if using wood chips, place soaked chips directly on

3 tablespoons white granulated sugar 2 tablespoons smoked paprika 2 tablespoons kosher salt 2 tablespoons dark brown sugar 1 tablespoon ground cumin 1 tablespoon freshly ground Worcestershire black pepper 1 tablespoon onion powder 1 tablespoon garlic powder 1 tablespoon sweet paprika 2 teaspoons dry mustard 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper In a medium bowl, combine all the ingredients; mix well. For a smoother rub, grind the ingredients in a spice grinder until well combined and all the pieces are uniform (the rub will be become a very fine powder and tan in color). It an be stored in an airtight container for up to 6 months.

Losing weight helps improve sleep Dear Dr. K: I’m overweight. My doctor told me, among other things, losing weight would help me sleep better. What’s the connection?

Dear Reader: It’s true. Losing weight, especially in your belly, improves the quality of sleep if you are overweight or obese.

A number of studies have shown this to be true. In one study, researchers followed people who lost an average of 15 pounds over six months. About 15 percent of the weight loss was in their bellies. The weight loss was associated with improved sleep quality.

What’s the connection? For one thing, excess body weight, especially in the neck, increases the likelihood of developing obstructive sleep apnea. This condition occurs when your airway becomes blocked, either completely or partially, while you sleep. It causes you to stop breathing, sometimes hundreds of times a night. Not surprisingly, sleep apnea disrupts your sleep.

It also puts you at risk for other conditions, including stroke and high blood pressure.

So, one possibility is weight loss reduces the risk of sleep apnea and improves sleep quality.

Another likely reason weight loss leads to improved sleep is linked to diabetes.

Weight loss reduces your risk of getting diabetes. And diabetes increases your risk of getting restless leg syndrome, which disrupts your sleep. Weight reduction also might reduce the frequency of those sleep disorders, thereby improving sleep quality.

We don’t yet know why losing belly fat in particular is associated with improved sleep. We do know, however, certain belly fat, called visceral fat, is associated with heart disease, dementia, breast and colon cancers and asthma. Probably, this is because belly fat cells produce hormones that

Losing weight in the belly seems a logical way to improve not only sleep but also overall health. Unfortunately, it’s difficult to target weight loss to the belly alone. But generally, if you lose weight, some of this will come from belly fat.

The answer to losing weight, improving sleep and losing belly fat winds up being overall weight loss through good old-fashioned exercise and a healthy diet. Take it slowly. Aim for 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity (such as swimming or brisk walking) each week. You don’t have to do five 30-minute workouts. More frequent but shorter exercise sessions, such as three 10-minute brisk walks instead of one 30-minute walk, will have the same impact.

You also need to cut back on calories.

The lasting effects of combining exercise and weight loss will go far beyond improving your night’s sleep and well into a healthy future.

I once encouraged a patient to join a group program for losing weight. I explained to her all of the health benefits of losing weight – the lower risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, breast and several other forms of cancer. She was dubious.

After she lost 25 pounds, she told me: “I’m still not convinced this is good for my health. But I finally like the way I look.

Plus, I’m sleeping like a baby.”

Five years into our marriage, my wife and I took a girlfriend, “Sonya.” I fell madly in love with her. Unfortunately, my relationship with my wife cooled because she changed as a person. We ended up divorcing.

I’m still in love with Sonya, but obviously nothing will ever come of it. I’m her confidant and best friend, and she tells me all about her dating life.

She is my soul. I don’t want to lose her as my best friend, but I don’t know how to manage the pain of my unrequited love.

That is true if a teacher or columnist analyzes his work. A good educator or writer should be his own harshest critic.

So far, this week’s deals have featured two possible finesses, and the decision was which, if either, to take. Here is another. South is in four spades. After West leads the club king to dummy’s ace, what should declarer do?

South has a minimum two-club opening bid, but opposite a 3-3-3-4 Yarborough, he could win nine tricks.

North, with an ace, is right to raise to three spades, not give a double negative.

Declarer has four potential losers: one spade, two hearts and one diamond. He is in the dummy for the last time and should take a major-suit finesse, but which one?

If the chosen finesse loses, the contract will probably be impossible to make. But suppose it wins -- then what? If South takes a successful trump finesse, he can cash the spade ace. If the king drops, fine; if not, though, he will surely lose those four tricks. The chance of king-singleton or king-doubleton in hearts is low (a priori, just under 10 percent). However, what happens if declarer takes a winning heart finesse?

He can continue with the spade ace and spade queen, and surely take 10 tricks: five spades, two hearts, two diamonds and one club. So, strange though it might feel, it is right to finesse in the shorter and weaker suit.
