Joliet D-204 board to hold meetings on how it runs Board will review procedures, agenda preparation

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet Township High School District 204 board will have a special meeting Wednesday to review its board policies and agenda.

The board will go over its board meeting procedures and the preparation of agendas in the boardroom of the administrative center, 300 Caterpillar Drive.

In recent months, residents have brought up questions about board procedures. At the May 17 meeting, some residents said it was hard to follow along with meetings.

They also asked about who they can direct questions to since questions wouldn’t be answered during public comment.

“It’s hard to follow the agenda, especially when you guys are talking over each other, we get lost in translation,” a resident

The board also proposed scheduled opportunities for administrators and board members with residents to have community conversations since the board meetings are where the board conducts its business.

The conversations with residents would include the superintendent or a designee and up to two board members.

“I liken the proposal to a chance meeting in the grocery store when somebody starts talking to you,” said Tracy Spesia,

board vice president, at the May 17 meeting.

District 204 officials invited residents to participate in Wednesday’s meeting in late May. They said special meetings on the board will be held Aug. 3 and Sept. 7 as well.

On the agenda for Wednesday’s meeting is the District 204 board policy – adopted Jan. 19 – that lists the type of board meetings held: general, regular, closed, reconvened or rescheduled, special and emergency meetings.

Also on the agenda is the Illinois Association of School Board’s Guide to Successful School Board Meetings.

The guide reviews the preparation of an agenda, distinguishing between board work and staff work, agenda format options, consent agenda and other matters.

The board will also review sample agendas and next steps.

Joliet council votes Tuesday on Kipling 156-unit luxury apartment project

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Plans for a 156-unit apartment complex is scheduled to go Tuesday to the Joliet City Council for a vote.

City staff has recommended approval of the project.

Tallgrass Estates would be built at McDonough Street and the Interstate 55 Southeast Frontage Road. It would be built across McDonough from Timber Oaks, a town house development with more than 200 units.

The Plan Commission has recommended approval of the Tallgrass plan.

The project would be built on 20.3 acres, and requires a variance in the city’s maximum density requirement. Density would be 7.8 units per acre, and the density limit for the R-4 zoning district is six units per acre.

According to the council memo on the project, the buildings would consist mainly of brick with some vinyl siding. About half of the units will have access to 20 garages. Additional parking will be provided in driveway areas.

A future 2,500-square-foot clubhouse with outdoor pool has been proposed.

The council also will consider hiring Hitchcock Design Group for consulting services to oversee the design and repairs of the fountain at Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park.

The city would use money from federal Community Development Block Grant funds for contract and for the actual repairs.

The fountain has not been used for several years. The city is considering a redesign of the fountain because of past problems with people entering the fountain pool.

Communities come together for fireworks, live entertainment

fsarver@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – The Independence Day celebration in Channahon is one that is embraced by the community, including the homes around the park where it was held Monday.

The people who come make a day of it, said Nicole Vaira, Channahon Park District program manager.

“They really just find a spot and call it their home for five hours before they leave for the day. People really just get comfortable and really enjoy it,” she said.

While the fireworks show was canceled at the Channahon event, it nevertheless drew hundreds to the park

to enjoy food vendors – such as Taco Burrito King and Tropical Sno – music, dodgeball and live entertainment.

The event also was scheduled to have a Superhero Freedom Parade with children and their families decorating their bikes, wagons and themselves to show off as they took a walk

around the park.

Michael Tessone, owner of Minooka-based Candy and Corn, said his business has been at the celebration for seven years and it gets better every year.

He said Candy and Corn comes out to the event and others like it for advertising, but they do a lot of fundraising for schools and events such as the Independence Day celebration to help get their name out to the community.

“It gets bigger and bigger every year,” Tessone said about Channahon celebration. “It was phenomenal the first year and it keeps getting better.”

She said it’s a mostly free event that offers inflatables, face painting, petting zoos and a dunk tank. Most of the homes around Community Park where the event was held embrace it, she said.

“They really embrace what we’re doing,” she said.

Kernel Dan’s Kettle Corn, based in Glen Ellyn, was at the celebration for a second year. Wearing a patriotic bandana around his head, Jeff Klausner, the owner, was helping to make kettle corn for visitors at the event.

“It’s a little sweet, a little salty,” Klausner said of the kettle corn.

He said his business has been to many outdoor events and festivals and while he was a little nervous about the lack of fireworks at the Channahon Independence Day celebration, it was nevertheless a fun event.

8 Will County Clerk’s Office to suspend all regular services on election day

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Will County Clerk’s Office will suspend all services Nov. 8 that are not related to the 2016 general election.

The Will County Board on June 20 adopted a resolution to suspend clerk’s office services Nov. 8, March 20, 2018, and Nov. 6, 2018, so the staff can devote itself to assisting voters and answering the expected high volume of phone calls on those election days.

Wilmington men charged in reckless firearm incident

WILMINGTON – Two Wilmington men face felony charges in an incident where gunshots they say were meant for coyotes had instead hit a neighbor’s home.

Thomas C. Beck, 53, and Dylan R. Nolan, 18, of the 1700 block of Vista Drive, Wilmington, have been charged with reckless discharge of a firearm.

that brought throngs of new voters to the same waiting lines as pre-registered voters. Schultz Voots said some pre-registered voters chose to leave rather than vote, and the goal is to not have that happen again.

While the clerk’s office is glad to have more new voters, accommodating pre-registered voters has become a challenge.

“With same-day registration there are a lot of people coming in to register and vote at the same time,” Leder said. “It takes longer to register than to actually vote.”

The clerk’s office is urging registered voters to vote by mail if possible, and for potential voters to register long before Nov. 8.

Earlier this month, Schultz Voots was given the green light by the Will County Board to buy 375 more poll books and other equipment for about $426,000. This, too, is meant to move lines along faster.

“She stated that she had summoned her husband and son, who both came out with semi-automatic handguns and began shooting at the coyotes,” according to the news release.

They stated they had no intention of

shooting a home at the 1800 block of Vista Drive. Residents at that home were awakened by bullets flying into their bedroom just after 3 a.m. Saturday, Wilmington police said.

One bullet came through the master bedroom window and ricocheted into another room, while a second bullet came through the wall and was stopped by a piece of wooden furniture.

Wilmington police found that not only

had two bullets entered the master bedroom, but two others struck the home as well. Investigators located nine spent shell casings in the area where Beck and Nolan had been shooting, authorities said.

“The residents said that they heard 8 to 10 shots in total and could actually hear those that didn’t strike the house ‘whizzing through the trees,’” Wilmington police said in a news release.

Crest Hill Deputy Police Chief Bradley Hertzmann spent 10 weeks at the FBI National Academy Program for advanced police training in Quantico, Virginia.

bstanley@shawmedia.com CREST HILL – A Crest Hill deputy police chief is now federally approved.

Deputy Chief Bradley Hertzmann spent 10 weeks in Quantico, Virginia, training at the FBI National Academy Program and completed his coursework June 10. The academy provides advanced education in various areas of law enforcement to police officers across the country and throughout the world.

“It gives someone from a small department the opportunity to collaborate with [top] law enforcement executives,” Hertzmann said.

Students take five classes, spending 45 hours in each.

“I think everyone would sign up for twice that many if they could,” Hertzmann said.

Class offerings in the most recent academy sessions included forensic science, evidence management, law and leadership, counterterrorism and cyber crime.

“We’ve had the same crimes for the last 100 years, it’s just that people are using more advanced computers to do it,” Hertzmann said.

Students walked into the cyber threat class with a 4-inch binder of work waiting on each desk.

“But the instructor was so qualified and passionate about the topic, it turned out to be the one I enjoyed the

most,” Hertzmann said.

The academy also tests the officers’ physical fitness. Hertzmann brought back a yellow brick for running and a blue brick for swimming the equivalent of the distance between Quantico and Washington, D.C., along the Potomac River.

“That’s a cumulative total for your time at the whole academy. Swimming 34 miles in one go would be a little rough,” Hertzmann said.

Hertzmann started as a Channahon police officer in 1992 and came to Crest Hill in 1997. He applied to the national academy four years ago.

Though Hertzmann came home for a break over Memorial Day weekend, he spent the spring focused on his classes and tried to minimize his contact with the department back home.

“It’s difficult to walk away because you have a great interest in making sure this place runs smoothly,” he said. “From talking with others from the academy, you realize no matter how big or small the department is, you all have the same issues.”

The deputy chief hopes the knowledge he’s gained will start being implemented within the department.

“We always want to promote continuing education for our police officers to keep up with current trends and changes in our society,” Crest Hill Mayor Ray Soliman said in a statement. “[Hertzmann’s] distinguished honor will benefit our other officers and our community as a whole.”

SHOREWOOD – George Bachur of Joliet retired two years ago but wanted to maintain an active lifestyle and meet new friends.

So he and his wife, Ann, joined the Troy Township senior program.

“As you age, you realize that all of the friends you had in your younger years, due to things that happen in life, start to disappear and you need a new set of friends. This is what this group is to me – my new set of friends to depend on,” Bachur said.

The idea of a senior program in Troy Township began in 1984 when Township Supervisor Joseph Baltz, then township collector, began work on a concept for a new facilities building.

The township had enough money for two-thirds of the project. Baltz learned that seniors are considered to be in the low- to moderate-income bracket, and the township could therefore apply for a grant in that manner to fund the remaining $100,000.

“I had been in the bank business and everybody in Troy Township who wanted to downsize moved out of town because there was nothing for them here. And we wanted to keep our se-

Shorewood resident Lorraine Rolnicki said the trip to Starved Rock was her favorite so far.

“It was fun because we got together on the bus and passed out candy, and the comedian was nice and the food was good,” Rolnicki said.

A celebration was held last week to honor the three decades the Troy Township senior program has been serving area residents. Baltz said that during the 30 years he has been involved with the senior program, he has witnessed how the group has always had a true concern for one another.

“If someone doesn’t show up when they are supposed to, they are getting a phone call to check on their well-being,” Baltz said. “Plus, this group helps with their health welfare because they can share problems.”

Born in Joliet and a lifelong Lockport and Crest Hill area resident. A graduate of Southern Illinois University with a bachelor’s degree in agricultural science, Joliet Catholic High School, Class of 1980, and St. Mary Immaculate Grade School. A member of St. Anne Catholic Church, Crest Hill. Owner and operator of Barbic Builders with over 25 years of service. He was a construction perfectionist.

When he took the job, it absolutely had to be right upon completion. Michael loved life! His family was the center of his universe right down to family dinner, without fail, every Sunday night. This family tradition eventually grew to include many extended family and friends.

The simple things made him the happiest: family time on the boat and at the river, spending time on the farm, watching a JCA football game, his dogs, driving his big red truck, his former years as a coach for St. Joe’s baseball and just the company of good friends.

Harold E. “Gene” Carroll, age 83, of Shorewood, passed away peacefully at Joliet Area Community Hospice Home on June 28, 2016,

surrounded by his loving family.

Gene was the oldest of three children born in Amboy, to Harold and Georgia (Longman) Carroll on Sept. 21, 1932.

He was married to Frances Morrissey on Sept. 3, 1956, at St. Patrick Church in Amboy.

Gene was a graduate of Amboy High School and attended Marquette University in Wisconsin before he enlisted in the U.S. Army. Sgt. 1st Class Carroll received the Bronze Star for meritorious service in Korea. After returning home from the service, Gene went to work with his father and uncle at Friendly Motors in Amboy. He also attended General Motors Institute in Flint, Michigan. Soon after, he began a distinguished career at State Farm and held numerous auto claims positions that spanned nearly 40 years.

Gene was a member of Holy Family Parish in Shorewood. Prior to this, he was an active member of St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church in Romeoville, where he served as school board president for several years as well as being a member of various organizations in the church. Additionally, he served on the Romeoville Recreation and the Mosquito Abatement Boards. Gene was especially proud of his 60-year membership in the American Legion. Gene and Frances continued their involvement in their nine children’s Catholic education through St. Andrew’s School, Joliet Catholic, St. Francis Academy and Joliet Catholic Academy with Jubilation being one of their favorite fundraising events.

The most important things in Gene’s life were love of God, love of his wife and family and love of his country. He instilled in all of his family the beautiful legacy of holiday traditions such as cooking and baking, which he so dearly loved. Gene enjoyed many family gatherings at Dry Gulch, a cabin in the family for over 45 years in Amboy. He was a die-hard Cub fan and eternally hopeful that his favorite baseball team would make it to the World Series. Gene was an avid fisherman and enjoyed traveling to Leech Lake, MN, with his wife and family. He took great pride in his garden and beautification of his home. During his retirement years, he loved spending time with his wife and enjoying the activities and achievements of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Up to his final moments, his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were at his side.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Georgia and Harold Carroll; niece, Tracy Mihm; son-in-law, Steven Prehn; and numerous beloved relatives. The ASSOCIATED PRESS HAZEL CREST – The police chief of a Chicago suburb where a man and his two daughters were killed Saturday in their home called the act “pure evil” and urged anyone with information to share it with investigators.

Authorities have not identified any suspects in the shootings in Hazel Crest, but Police Chief Mitchell Davis said it was a “targeted event.”

“Anyone who could kill a 3-year-old and a 10-year-old, that’s pure evil as far as I’m concerned,” Davis said at a news conference Sunday.

Dionus M. Neeley, 39, and his daughters, 3-year-old Endia and 10-year-old Elle, were fatally shot.

Davis said the crime was “not a random act of violence” and that Hazel Crest residents were not in danger.

Illinois market vendor removes Nazi flag after complaints

ST. CHARLES – A vendor at a suburban Chicago flea market has removed a Nazi flag that had been for sale after complaints.

The Daily Herald reported that a picture of the display at the Kane County Flea Market in St. Charles was shared hundreds of times on social media Sunday and generated criticism.

Ben Robinson, a member of the family that owns the flea market, said the vendor was “more than happy to take it down.”

Robinson says the man has been a vendor for about 30 years and typically sells furniture and household items.

Robinson said the vendor was not making a political statement and did not intend to cause offense.

Practice surgeries go virtual at Chicago medical center

CHICAGO – Rush University Medical Center in Chicago is adopting virtual reality technology to train its obstetrics and gynecology residents in surgical techniques.

The technology will allow Rush to do away with practice operations on pigs, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. As a result, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals agreed to cover half of the $12,000 cost of the training module.

The system will allow the 24 residents to practice using a joystick or surgical tools while they see a virtual patient through a screen. Students will practice common procedures on the uterus, ovaries and Fallopian tubes.

“Surgery is no different than learning how to play an instrument or a sport,” OB/GYN residency Director Dr. Xavier Pombar said. “The more practice you have, the better you get.”

2 Chicago officers hurt by firecracker thrown at squad car

CHICAGO – Chicago police said they were looking for a suspect after two officers were injured when someone threw a firecracker at their squad car.

Local media report the incident happened around 4:20 p.m. Sunday in the city’s South Shore neighborhood.

Police said the officers were on patrol when another vehicle pulled alongside them, someone threw the firecracker toward their squad car and it exploded.

The officers were taken to a hospital in good condition with injuries that weren’t life-threatening.

Report: Improve control of Chicago settlement costs

CHICAGO – A city watchdog report said the Chicago government lacks a centralized program to keep down the hundreds of millions of dollars it pays out each year for things such as police misconduct cases and workers’ compensation claims.

Inspector General Joseph Ferguson estimated that Chicago paid $457.8 million in claims in 2013 and 2014, including $203.1 million for workers’ compensation and $146.3 million for police misconduct and other public safety claims, The Chicago Tribune reports.

Ferguson called for changes in a letter to Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s chief of staff, Eileen Mitchell. Ferguson said the city should implement standards to identify and evaluate risk by tracking the frequency and costs of different types of claims. City workers then could be trained to avoid those issues.

Mitchell responded by pledg-

ing to create a working group with representatives of various departments to look into how to address the situation.

The administration said police misconduct will be excluded from the working group’s responsibilities because of an ongoing federal investigation of the Chicago Police Department and the city’s attempts to implement recommendations from Emanuel’s Police Accountability Task Force.

State Finance Department spokeswoman Molly Poppe said Thursday that the city already tries to manage risk, but that the city agrees there could be benefits to ensuring risk management functions are coordinated across departments.

“Going forward, a working group comprised of departmental leaders will allow us to identify areas for improved coordination of risk management procedures citywide, further supplementing current work in departments such as employee training and safety initiatives, proactive evaluation of claims, infrastructure planning, and insurance management,” Poppe said.

With few political allies, Trump planning a celebrity convention

CLEVELAND – Donald Trump’s team promises an extraordinary display of political entertainment at this month’s Republican National Convention, with the accent on entertainment.

The former reality television star plans to feature his high-profile children at the summer gathering in Cleveland, with the hope they’ll be joined by a number of celebrity supporters. Prospects include former Indiana basketball coach Bobby Knight, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and longtime boxing promoter Don King.

“I’m going to be involved, definitely,” said King, who lives in Cleveland and is a passionate supporter of the presumptive Republican nominee. “He’s my man. I love him. He’s going to be the next president.”

While those bold-face names have yet to be confirmed, the fact they’re on Trump’s list is a reminder that many of the Republican Party’s biggest stars aren’t willing to appear on his behalf. The GOP’s two living presidents, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, its most recent presidential nominee, Mitt Romney, and Ohio’s Republican governor, John Kasich, all plan to avoid the four-day event that traditionally serves as a powerful display of party unity heading into the sprint toward Election Day. “He’s going to have to bring all his skills to bear to make this work, not just in Cleveland, but for the next four months,” said Matt Borges, the Ohio Republican Party chairman. “It won’t be easy, but that’s what he’s got to do.”

“This is not going to be your typical party convention like years past,” Trump spokesman Jason Miller said. “Donald Trump is better suited than just about any candidate in memory to put together a program that’s outside of Washington and can appeal directly to the American people.”

When Hillary Clinton hosts her party at the Democratic National Convention the following week, she’ll face a different issue entirely: how to squeeze in the many popular, prominent Democrats backing her campaign.

Along with Clinton and her eventual vice presidential pick, there are sure to be speeches from President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, first lady Michelle Obama and, of course, the candidate’s husband, former President Bill Clinton.

There’s also Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a favorite of progressives and one of Trump’s fiercest critics. Warren is on Clinton’s running-mate shortlist but will surely be slotted for a prominent convention speech even if she’s not selected.

“My children are all going to be speaking: Ivanka, Tiffany, Don, Eric. They’re going to be speaking,” Trump said Friday during an appearance at the Western Conservative Summit in Denver. “My wife is going to be speaking at the convention. We’re going to have a great time.”

Trump’s campaign has also been in touch with aides to chief primary rival, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, who has been trying to win a speaking slot. Other national leaders under consideration include former United Nations Ambassador John Bolton, West Virginia Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, Washington Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers and Gingrich.

Some celebrities backing Trump have passed on the chance to be a part of the show.

Among them: former Chicago Bears coach Mike Ditka, who told the Chicago Tribune last week, “I spoke with Mr. Trump this afternoon, and he invited me. But I don’t think I’m going to go.”

Clinton’s speaking program, too, isn’t without its uncomfortable riddles. There’s no public sense yet of what role she’ll give to Bernie Sanders, the Vermont senator whose surprisingly strong challenge in the Democratic primary has yet to officially come to an end.

Sanders says he’ll vote for Clinton, but he’s yet to formally endorse her and is pushing for changes to the Democratic platform.

Some former hostages being questioned over Bangladesh attack The ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW DELHI – Some of the hostages rescued from the weekend attack on an upscale restaurant in Bangladesh’s capital were questioned Monday by investigators searching for clues about the possible masterminds behind the gruesome attack that left 28 dead, including many foreigners.

Authorities were still holding five of the 13 hostages rescued when commandos stormed the restaurant in Dhaka’s diplomatic zone Saturday morning, killing six of the attackers and capturing one, officials said.

Bangladesh police chief A.K.M. Shahidul Haque said authorities would be interrogating two men, including a suspected militant, who were detained during Saturday’s operation. He would not say whether either had been among those counted as hostages, only that they were being treated in a hospital for unspecified injuries.

A second official said the five former

hostages still being held included a Canadian citizen of Bangladeshi origin and a Bangladesh-born British citizen.

The official spoke on the condition of anonymity, as he was not authorized to speak to the media about the ongoing investigation. The official said authorities were looking into the backgrounds of the five people and questioning their families and friends.

Global Affairs Canada, the government department which manages Canada’s diplomatic and consular relations, and consular officials at the High Commission of Canada in Dhaka said they had not received any reports of a Canadian citizen being detained.

It was not clear whether all five were suspects, or whether they were being held and questioned simply because authorities thought they might offer useful information in tracing the origins of the attack.

The official confirmed that investigators were also speaking with a third man described by local media as a Ban-

gladeshi who was trapped inside the restaurant along with his wife and two children. The man, a teacher at a private university in Dhaka, had returned to Bangladesh recently after living nearly 20 years in Britain.

Some photographs and several crude videos taken from an apartment near the Holey Artisan Bakery show the man talking to someone while attackers allowed him to leave before paramilitary forces launched the rescue operation on Saturday. The man’s friends and police also said that one of the attackers was a student in the same department at the university where the man teaches.

The brutality of the attack – the worst convulsion of violence yet in the recent series of deadly attacks to hit Bangladesh – has stunned the traditionally moderate Muslim nation and raised global concerns about whether it can cope with increasingly strident Islamist militants.

That the attackers targeted a popular restaurant in the heart of the diplomatic

quarter of Bangladesh’s capital signaled a shift in militant tactics. Previously, most attacks were carried out by gangs of young men wielding cleavers and machetes and hacking individual victims before fleeing.

The Daily Star newspaper on Monday said the bloody hostage crisis had left “the nation shattered and with a sense of extreme unease.” The editorial also criticized authorities’ consistent denial of the presence of any international terrorist groups, even as the Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack and released gruesome photographs that apparently depicted the torture of hostages.

“The methods employed and the savagery with which the killings were carried out are hallmarks of international terrorist outfits like ISIS and al-Qaida. This is clear,” the newspaper said. “What is not clear is whether, after such overwhelming evidence of their presence, the official line will be one of denial?”

LONDON – Britain’s Conservative prime minister is stepping down. The Labour Party leader is barely clinging to power. And now the head of the U.K. Independence Party, a key architect of the dramatic vote to leave the European Union, has resigned as well.

It has left the country with a power vacuum just as someone needs to step up and own the talks on how Britain will exit the EU. The June 23 referendum results have ripped through British politics like a buzz saw, and it will likely be weeks before some clarity emerges.

The new Conservative Party leader will be chosen Sept. 9 and will become prime minister. The contenders are talking in general terms about “Brexit” plans, but their words aren’t yet backed by any authority.

UKIP leader Nigel Farage said Monday that he is leaving his party post because he wants his life back after years of political intrigue. But observers note he’s keeping his seat in the European Parliament and may well be hoping for a formal role when the new prime minister takes power and, most likely, starts Brexit talks with EU leaders.

“There’s always a chance of him returning, but his future relies on other people supporting him and asking him to do something,” said George Jones, government professor emeritus at the London School of Economics. “He goes out on a high as the man who caused

There are five contenders, including Gove, with Conservative lawmakers set to start voting on their favorites Tuesday.

Media attention has focused on Home Secretary Theresa May – who opposed Brexit during the referendum campaign, but now backs it – and Energy Minister Andrea Leadsom, who made her first major speech Monday.

She cast herself as a passionate supporter of the Brexit cause, although she opposed it as recently as 2013, promising negotiations would be relatively quick and effective in terms of giving Britain the power to control how many immigrants will move to the U.K. “Freedom of movement will end, and the British Parliament will decide how many people enter our country each year to live, work and contribute to our national life,” she said.

Leadsom is one of the least-known among the five candidates to replace Cameron, but gained attention as one of the strongest voices for a vote to leave the EU. Earlier, Treasury chief George Osborne announced plans to cut U.K. corporation tax to less than 15 percent to encourage companies to invest and ease business concerns about the country’s vote to leave the EU. Osborne says the cut is meant to underscore that Britain is “still open for business,” despite the referendum result.

Time will tell who benefits politically from stopgap budget deal Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan rose to give his customary year-end speech after the House had concluded its business last week and pointed his finger right at Gov. Bruce Rauner.

For months, Madigan has noted that every time Rauner sets aside his “personal agenda,” the two men have been able to reach a compromise on a spending proposal. What Madigan refers to as a personal agenda is actually Rauner’s Turnaround Agenda, a package of mainly pro-business/ anti-union measures that the Legislature’s Democratic majority has so far refused to approve. And Rauner won’t agree to a full budget deal until that happens, which is why Illinois went a year without a budget.

Madigan informed the chamber that the new, temporary stopgap budget deal and K-12 education spending plan passed last week represented the “seventh time” they have approved spending proposals independent of the governor’s agenda in the last 18 months.

But pension reform is very near the top of the governor’s “personal agenda.” And, last week, Madigan put votes on a bill that gives Chicago Public Schools $205 million for its pension system. And, under the agreement he made with Rauner, it will only be signed into law if the leaders can agree on a significant pension reform bill by January.

Madigan reportedly was reluctant to make that deal. He called it a “trap” during private negotiations with the governor.

He could be right about this being a trap.

Barring divine intervention, CPS will face yet another severe cash crunch next June as it struggles to make its huge annual pension payment. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel probably will be desperate for a deal to get access to that state cash infusion. And the unions that support Madigan (meaning all of them) are not going to love having to wage yet another pension reform fight.

Madigan will be “trapped” in the middle.

The speaker reportedly was convinced to accept the offer at the urging of Emanuel.

And, even then, Madigan insisted on having a bipartisan roll call, with a strict minimum number of Republican votes – and he stuck to that demand even though the House Republicans were short a couple of members last week.

The point, however, is that the governor, after a year and a half of private cajoling and public bullying, finally succeeded at convincing Emanuel to put some pressure on Madigan to do a deal. And that pressure will only increase as the January passage

Once that begins, it may be hard to contain, so Team Rauner likely is hoping it can use similar ideas to force Madigan to the table on other Turnaround Agenda items, such as workers’ compensation cost cuts and reduced rights for unionized employees in local governments.

Madigan could, however, use all this to his own political advantage through the summer and fall.

Rauner said last week that helping the legislative Republicans pick up seats in November would be a top priority from here on out. He correctly noted that their super-minority status meant they had little influence at the statehouse. He wants to give them a bigger voice. Rauner has said previously that if the Democrats pick up any seats this November, it would be a “disaster” for taxpayers. And he has repeatedly said that the Democrats have made it clear it will be easier for them to do a “grand bargain” if they wait until after the election.

That all adds up to a huge incentive for unions to rally behind Madigan. If they work hard and help Madigan pick up some seats, perhaps they can stave off a “grand bargain.” But if they slack off even a little and Madigan suffers a loss, no matter how slight, well, the grand bargaining could commence in earnest.

If Madigan’s interest group allies truly go all out and they can build on the natural Democratic advantage of a presidential election year, and perhaps the added advantage of a pretty darned odd Republican nominee, Madigan definitely could pick up seats. The Democrats have polling which they say shows this could happen.

But the Republicans have polling which they claim shows they’re doing really well in numerous targeted legislative districts.

That’s one reason why the Republicans could justify last week’s stopgap budget bargain, even though it’s widely expected to take lots of heat off incumbents (and there are a whole lot more Democratic incumbents than Republican incumbents).

At least, that’s the hope. This has been, after all, a very bizarre year all over the place.

To the Editor: The smiles and back slapping after passage of the Illinois stopgap budget on Thursday shows just how seriously low our standards have fallen.

Legislators seem to think that the community of human service agencies can cope with getting paid 65 cents on the dollar as reimbursement for services already provided under signed contracts.

Legislators point to the good in SB 2047. State government now has the authority to pass through federal dollars to human service agencies so that services such as home-delivered meals can continue. Tax revenues dedicated to human services that have been languishing in the “Commitment for Human Services Trust Fund” all year are finally being released.

But a 65 percent appropriation will not prevent the shutdown of human service programs.

Programs such as Centers for Independent Living, addiction prevention, supportive housing, and mental health community services will suffer.

The United Way of Illinois’ June

22 budget survey reports that 91 percent of agencies are cutting clients, leaving nearly 1 million people in Illinois without critical services.

Legislators tell us to wait until January for new revenues. But in the meantime, our backlog of bills will continue to grow and our human service infrastructure will continue to shrivel. Waiting only increases the amount of revenue we need, or absentmindedly walks us into cuts our state cannot sustain.

The result: Community-based human services will shrink.

Summer and after-school programs for children and youth will close, leading to an uptick in violence and substance abuse in our cities, our suburbs and our rural areas. People with mental health problems will lose needed supports and become homeless.

Institutional spending for nursing homes, hospital care and correctional facilities will skyrocket.

Illinois is a proud, strong state.

We are the state of Abraham Lincoln. How can this be our new standard?

Medick pleased with turnaround season

cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – What a difference a year has made for Joliet Slammers pitcher Spencer Medick.

Last season at this time, he was dealing with injuries and hadn’t even played. And then when he finally got the chance to compete, he struggled.

But this year, he’s tied with five other pitchers with five victories, which is the third-highest win total in the Frontier League. Only two other pitchers, Southern Illinois’ Josh Kimborowicz (6-0) and former teammate Liam O’Sul-

livan (5-0), have as many victories without a loss.

He’ll also be the first to acknowledge that playing on a much-improved Joliet squad that has one of the league’s top offenses and a very good defense definitely helps.

“Last year was a tough year for me,” Medick said. “I had my ups and downs and was hurt and kind of battled through injury early in the year, and spent half the year on the D.L. and was fortunate enough to get an opportunity from (Jeff) Isom to come to Joliet. He gave me a shot and brought me back again this year.

“There’s definitely a different

team dynamic this year. We’ve been hot with the bats lately, we’re playing great defense and we’ve been pitching better and better, and that was kind of the question mark going into this season.”

After going 1-4 last season with a 4.96 ERA as a starter for the Slammers, he’s significantly improved his wonloss record and also dropped his ERA by nearly a point to 4.11.

He’s won five of his last seven starts and has gone at least five innings in each of those outings.

While O’Sullivan, the Slammers’ most reliable starter has moved on, the rest of the rotation is confident they

can continue the improvement that they’ve shown since early in the season. Much of Joliet’s recent success is due to consistently good starts from its pitchers.

“I just feel a lot more prepared this year,” Medick said. “I can trust my stuff a little bit better and can go out and attack hitters the way that I want to without worrying about pitch counts or if my arm is going to hold up. I just feel super prepared and know that I can go out every fifth day and get the job done and give my team a chance to win.”

Slammers use big 6th inning to edge Schaumburg

cherron@shawmedia.com SCHAUMBURG – Coming off a big home series against Windy City and preparing for another with Washington, the Joliet Slammers had to hit the road for an Independence Day contest against another team that’s on their heels in the Frontier League’s East Division standings, Schaumburg.

Joliet used a five-run sixth inning to grab a 6-2 lead, but the Boomers kept the pressure on and made it interesting in the ninth before the Slammers held on for a 6-5 win.

While the score was closer than Joliet manager Jeff Isom would have liked, he’s proud of his squad for again doing what it needed to for another win, their 20th in 27 contests.

The victory improves the Slammers record to 28-18, the first time they’ve been 10 games over .500 this season.

They also saw their division lead grow to four games over Washington, which starts a three-game series at Silver Cross Field today. Schaumburg is now six games back.

“We’ve been making it interesting in the ninth inning, that’s for sure,”

Continued from page 17 “We have a good bullpen that we can trust if there’s a game where we can’t get the job done,” Medick added. “But at the same time, the starters are competing against each other a little bit and trying to pitch better than our last outing. We all want to be the guy on the pitching staff. It’s always a good feeling when every day you can run out a starter that you can trust to get the job done.”

While Medick likes what he’s seen from the Slammers’ pitchers since early in the season, he’s also obviously pleased with the offense and defense that the rest of his teammates have provided the staff, as well as the close-knit group of players who’ve helped their team get off to a 28-18 start.

“The offense definitely makes it easier on the pitching staff so all that we have to do is go out there and pitch with good tempo and get them back in the dugout so that they swing it,” Medick said. “It’s been a lot of fun. We have a good team dynamic right now and we all get along and show up at the ballpark every day expecting to win. We don’t ride the highs too high or the lows too low.

“We’re all trying to get to the next level, but at the same time, we’re all pulling for each other. Everyone was excited when Liam and Boo (Vazquez) got

Rice, making his first start, allowed two runs and five hits in five innings, to record his initial win of the season.

The Boomers moved in front in the fifth inning when Jordan Dean (2 for 5) hit a solo homer to left to give his team a 2-1 advantage but the Slammers regained control in the sixth.

Schaumburg got a run back in the bottom of the sixth inning against reliever Marc Rutledge. Chris Robinson led off with a walk, Ino Patron (2 for 4) singled him to third and Nick Oberg (2 for 4) singled to center to make it a 6-3 game.

The Boomers made it 6-4 in the eighth when Patron and Oberg singled and Dean singled in one run but Oberg was thrown out at third. Brent Choban came in after that and was able to get out of the inning.

In the ninth, Mark Nelson (2 for 4) singled, Chris Robinson walked and pinch hitter Mikal Hill made it 6-5 with a two-out infield hit. But Choban coaxed a pop-up to earn his fifth save.

Isom said. “We had the big inning and scored some runs and then rode it out.

We got a couple of guys on and they swung the bats well, and guys just kept going. We got some pitches to hit and took advantage of them. I know the other teams see these as big series for them, but if we keep swinging the bats and getting quality starts like we’ve been, we should be ok. We just want to keep winning series and compete on a nightly basis.

“We started with our bullpen from the start of the game since Chris Rice probably hadn’t had a start in two or three years. With the signing of Liam O’Sullivan, this would have been his start. Our bullpen has been depleted and is running on fumes, but they’re finding a way to win. I’m very proud of them.”

After falling behind, 2-1, in the fifth, the Slammers took the lead for good in the sixth inning, when they batted around for five runs on five hits against Boomers starter and loser pitcher Lars Ligouri. Carter Bell (2 for 5) doubled to left and Marc Flores (2 for 4) followed with a run-scoring double to right to tie it up.

When you compete on offense and on defense and compete with your pitchers, that creates wins. The offense is good and the pitchers are doing their job, so we’re looking good.

“Even though we just had two guys picked up, our team chemistry is great.

The new guys have filled their roles and we’re jelling pretty good right now going into the All-Star break. We’re all about winning and being positive and staying loose are key. When we do both of those, it’s a deadly combo.”

When asked what he likes to do in his time away from the sport, Medick, who finished his college career at North Carolina’s Elon University before having a stint in the Diamondbacks’ organization, admits that he spends a lot of time focused on how to become a better pitcher.

“I’m a hardcore baseball guy,” Medick said. “I definitely love trying to figure out how to prepare myself for my next start. I’m doing a lot of research on the mechanics of throwing and physical preparation. I guess one of my hobbies is how can I tinker with my body and pitching mechanics and my workouts, conditioning and throwing program so I can kind of figure out what works best for me.

“I have a good friend who’s actually writing my in-season conditioning and strength program and we do it almost on a day-by-day or week-by-week basis since no two starts are the same. And I pull a lot of my information and offseason throwing program from a place in Seattle called Driveline and they do a lot of in-depth, bio-mechanical things that are kind of on the nerdy side of baseball.

But it’s awesome since most athletes like myself are workhorses. Tell us to do something and we’ll do it.”

MORRIS – Down by 20 points in a regional semifinal last season at Neuqua Valley, Plainfield North rallied for a 61-53 win over Sandburg.

It was a special victory by a group that started the season with a lot of inexperience, a team that matured and improved as the months progressed through the Southwest Prairie Conference schedule.

Plainfield North came close to earning another big victory in the regional final before falling, 64-59, to Joliet West, which went on to win the Class 4A Lockport Sectional.

As North completed its summer tournament schedule last week at the 32-school Morris Boys Shootout, North coach Bob Krahulik looked back on the team that rallied toward the end of the season to finish 18-10, and ahead to his inexperienced 201617 squad.

“Last year all five of those guys were seniors,’’ Krahulik said. “One had tremendous varsity experience.

The other four grew as the season went on. I’m hoping the same may happen this year because no one on this team has significant playing time on the varsity level.

“It’s going to be a learning experience, a lot of sophomores up. It’s going to take a lot of time. It’s a rebuilding year.’’

Kevin Krieger, the 6-foot-6 leader of last year’s team, has moved on to Minnesota State. With his loss, combined with several absent players involved in summer baseball, North was in a state of flux as Krahulik evaluated the roster.

“It’s a long summer when a lot of your main players aren’t here with you all summer,’’ the Tigers’ coach said.

Other local teams at the Morris Shootout were Bolingbrook, which reached the semifinals, Joliet Central, Minooka, Morris, Plainfield Central and Lockport.

All the coaches were looking closely at their younger players, evaluating the performances in a crowded setup and determining who could be on the respective rosters next season.

“We’re going to get our young kids a lot of playing time,’’ Krahulik said.

“We’ve got some sophomores who should make varsity.’’

Brady Miller and Gavin Doyle, two juniors Krahulik expects to be key contributors next season, missed Morris Shootout games because of commitments to their summer baseball teams.

The 6-foot-3 Miller also is the favorite to start at quarterback for the football team.

“He’s probably going to be our No. 1 guy,’’ Krahulik said. “Brady Miller can play above the rim. He can shoot.

He can play defense. He’ll be our best rebounder, our best shooter and our best athlete.’’

The No. 1 senior likely will be guard Justin Wilson, the only other returning player besides Miller who saw playing time.

“They’ll be our three main players,’’ Krahulik said of Miller, Doyle and Wilson. “We don’t have a lot of depth.’’

Wilson is ready to fill an important role for the Tigers.

“The team being young, I think I’ll

have to bring a lot of the leadership,’’ he said. “This group can do everything well if we listen to coach.’’

Joliet West and Joliet Central are leaving the Southwest Suburban Blue and joining the Southwest Prairie.

“Those are two tough teams,’’ Wilson said. “We’re going to have to battle them.’’

Krahulik believes Joliet West will be “the team to beat’’ in the conference. He also expects Oswego East to be a factor and that defending champion Minooka can’t be counted out even with its graduation losses.

And don’t count out Plainfield North, either.

“Our defense came a long way,’’ Wilson said. “From the beginning of summer to now, we’ve been working a lot on our defense. That’s been our main focus because we’re kind of a short group. We have to be active.’’

White Sox beat Yankees for 3rd straight win

The Associated Press CHICAGO – The flashy speed is as advertised. It’s the power that is a bit of a surprise, even for Tim Anderson.

Anderson and Dioner Navarro each hit a two-run homer off CC Sabathia on Monday, helping James Shields and the White Sox beat the New York Yankees, 8-2.

The Sox had a string of 15 consecutive solo shots, matching a franchise record, before Anderson connected in the third inning, tying it at 2. Brett Lawrie hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the fifth before Navarro belted a drive to left field for his fifth homer.

Anderson went 2 for 4 for his 12th multihit game since he was promoted from the minors on June 10. The 2013 first-round pick has four homers in 23 games with the Sox after hitting four in 55 games with Triple-A Charlotte.

“I guess it’s daddy strength kicking in,” said Anderson, who became a parent for the first time during spring training.

Chase Headley hit a two-run homer for New York, which has lost three of four. Starlin Castro went 4 for 4 with two doubles in his first game in Chicago since the Yankees acquired the infielder in a December trade with the Cubs.

Sabathia (5-6) struck out nine in six innings, but allowed five runs and eight hits. The big left-hander has dropped each of his last two starts and is winless in his last three outings with an 8.31 ERA during that stretch.

“I thought his stuff was much better than the numbers indicated, but

that’s baseball,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. “You have to make pitches all the time.”

While Sabathia is struggling, Shields (4-9) got his second straight win after a long slump that started with San Diego and carried over to the Sox after he was acquired in a trade

a month ago. The right-hander, who went 0-2 with a 15.80 ERA in his first four starts for the Sox, limited New York to five hits in six innings.

“You’re going to have rough stretches pretty much every year, so it’s nothing crazy,” Shields said. “But we’re just going to continue to work hard and try to get this team some wins.”

The Yankees loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth, but Shields retired Aaron Hicks on a fly to right to end the inning. They put the first two batters on in the eighth before Nate Jones struck out Didi Gregorius, Headley and Hicks – all swinging.

New York (40-42) went 0 for 13 with runners in scoring position.

“That was the difference in the game,” Girardi said. “They got the hits when they needed them and we didn’t.

We had plenty of opportunities.”

The Yankees also were hurt by three errors by the normally sure-handed Gregorius at shortstop, including a flubbed grounder that helped the White Sox score two runs in the eighth.

Todd Frazier went 3 for 3 with two walks as the Sox (43-40) moved three games over .500 for the first time since June 3. It has won five of six and 10 of 14 overall.

Bryant, Contreras homer to help Cubs rout Reds

CHICAGO – Kris Bryant hit his NLbest 24th home run before leaving with a bruised leg, Willson Contreras and Addison Russell also went deep on Monday, and the Cubs pounded the struggling Cincinnati Reds, 10-4.

Playing the NL Central’s lastplace team was just what the major league-leading Cubs needed after getting outscored 32-11 in a four-game sweep by the Mets in New York.

The Reds, meanwhile, continued their slide. They fired pitching coach Mark Riggins in an effort to shake up a staff with the majors’ worst ERA, then lost for the 11th time in 13 games.

Bryant hit a two-run drive in the second inning and scored three times before exiting with a bruised lower left leg in the fifth. He was hurt making a catch in left field in the top half when center fielder Albert Almora Jr. ran into him.

Matt Szczur batted for Bryant in the bot-

tom half. Contreras capped a three-run second with a solo drive off Cody Reed (0-3) that made it 6-0. Russell drove in three runs and scored two.

Kyle Hendricks (7-6) gave up an unearned run and four hits in 51/3 innings as the Cubs started a four-game homestand on a winning note after going 4-7 on their longest trip of the season.

Zack Cozart and Eugenio Suarez hit back-to-back home runs for Cincinnati in the seventh. But with Reed struggling again, the Reds never had much of a chance.

The left-hander gave up eight runs – four earned – and five hits in four innings after getting pounded at home by the Cubs last week. He also walked three and hit two batters with pitches as his ERA remained at 9.00 after four career starts.

The Cubs, who swept three games in Cincinnati last week, scored three runs in each of the first two innings.

Bryant’s towering drive to center in the second left him two homers shy of

his total last season on the way to winning the NL Rookie of the Year award.

He connected after going deep six times during the 11-game trip.

Contreras’ homer – a shot to left – was his fifth since being called up from Triple-A on June 17.

Cubs trainer’s room: OF Dexter Fowler (strained right hamstring) said he is feeling better but is not sure whether he will return before the All-Star break.

He was eligible to come off the disabled list Monday. Manager Joe Maddon did not rule out the possibility that Fowler’s first game back could be the All-Star Game.

Up next: RHP John Lackey (7-4, 3.27 ERA) looks to get back to winning for Chicago, while Reds LHP Brandon Finnegan (3-7, 4.48) tries to bounce back from the shortest start of his career.

Lackey is 0-2 in his past four starts, though he pitched into the seventh in a no-decision against the Mets last week.

Finnegan gave up eight runs in 21/3 innings against Washington.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – One of his drivers had just used a dominating run to capture his first career victory at famed Daytona International Speedway. The win was the 100th for the organization at NASCAR’s top level.

To get to victory lane, his other driver offered an assist in the closing laps. Unrelated, he also spun another driver on the last lap to create another round of hard feelings.

So instead of basking in the triumph of victory while wearing a champagne-soaked white shirt, Roger Penske was borderline angry in his impassioned defense of drivers Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano.

Keselowski’s victory Saturday night was his third of the season, first at Daytona after years of struggles on the high-banked superspeedway. He got a late push on a final restart from Logano, who then irked Kurt Busch when contact on the final lap sent Busch spinning through the grass.

Busch, a former Penske driver, called it “an aggressive mistake,” but his crew chief Tony Gibson fumed on Twitter: “Stupid is as stupid does!!!”

Penske thought it was unfair.

“Joey has taken, I think, some undue criticism from my perspective,” the team owner said. “I could name three or four things that certainly weren’t his fault. He’s one of the best drivers on the racetrack out there day in and day out, and sure, people make mistakes. A lot of these drivers can knock somebody off the track, and they say, ‘Hey, I’m sorry.’ They don’t let Logano do that.

“As far as I’m concerned, I’m behind him 300 percent, and I’ll talk to Kurt, he didn’t do it on purpose. ... At the end of the day, that’s racing, as far as I’m concerned.”

Indeed, Logano has taken his share of hazing from many veterans during his rapid rise into NASCAR. He was famous before he’d ever turned a lap, hyped as the next big thing, and many drivers took umbrage to the family wealth that eased his road to NASCAR’s top level.

Penske is used to defending Logano, who was recruited to the team by Keselowski three years ago when Keselowski was unselfish enough to look past a teammate who could match him on the track and saw only a talent who could strengthen the organization.

Penske is also used to defending Keselowski, who is outspoken and doesn’t back down from anything. Unlike Logano, he had to claw his way through the racing ranks, and after

But Penske apparently didn’t feel like he needed to defend Keselowski on Saturday night. Already annoyed with the Logano flap, he misinterpreted a question about Keselowski’s racing smarts and seemed to snap.

“He’s a calculating guy, and you’re not with him every day like we are in the shop, (seeing) what he brings to the race team,” Penske said. “He came early on, he said, ‘Look, I’m going to help you get a championship team.’

We did that. He helped to attract (crew chief) Paul Wolfe to the team.

“This is not a popularity contest, and anybody that thinks it is, you know, shouldn’t be sitting here. This is racing, and unfortunately some people have different ideas. But look, I wouldn’t trade these two drivers for anyone. They’re young, they’re aggressive, they win races. They work well with the sponsors, and they’re high integrity guys, so move on from there.”

Make no mistake, Captain, most owners would kill for your lineup.

Keselowski recruited Logano to the team the season after Keselowski delivered Penske his first Sprint Cup title. Since his 2013 arrival, Logano and Keselowski have combined for 24 Cup wins. They’ve won 21 more races in the Xfinity Series, which Penske uses to develop team personnel and give sponsors a sampling of the organization at a lower price than the Cup level.

They’ve helped develop Ryan Blaney, a future star in NASCAR who has been lent to the Wood Brothers along with the several crew members who are preparing for the top level.

And they probably should have given Penske two more titles.

Keselowski was the class of the field in 2014, when he won six races, but had late bumps in the debut of the elimination format in NASCAR’s playoffs. Despite a win and four top-four finishes in the final five races, he was denied a shot to race for the title.

It was Logano who led the Penske charge last season. He won the Daytona 500 and three consecutive races in the Chase. But a feud with

Matt Kenseth wouldn’t go away and Kenseth intentionally wrecked him in an act of retaliation that ultimately kept Logano out of the championship finale.

So it’s understandable that Penske is tired of the bad rap his drivers receive. They’ve proved to be among the elite talent in NASCAR, and their contributions to the storied Penske organization are immeasurable.

Together, in this 50th anniversary season of Team Penske, Keselowski and Logano are a massive part of the 100th win.

“The 100th in NASCAR is something special,” Penske said. “It’s a byproduct of all the good people we have, and to me we’ve got to continue to remember that. We lose more than we win in this business, and you’ve got to know how to deal with the downs and take advantage of the ups.

“We’ve competed in multiple series, and I think we’re almost at 450 wins now, and we’re, I think, three or four away from 500 poles. Our goal is 500 and 500. This was the first step to get to 100 in NASCAR.”

Durant leaves Thunder, giving Warriors look of super team

OAKLAND, Calif. – Kevin Durant decided his best chance for “growth” means leaving his beloved Oklahoma City behind for a big move out West to join the star-studded, record-setting Golden State Warriors and play alongside Splash Brothers Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson.

In the most anticipated move of the NBA offseason, Durant announced his decision Monday on The Players’ Tribune. His contract is for $54 million over two years and includes a player option, a person with knowledge of the deal said Monday, speaking on the condition of anonymity because details weren’t made public. Durant’s move will become official as soon as Thursday, when free agents can sign their new contracts.

Independence Day, indeed.

“The primary mandate I had for myself in making this decision was to have it based on the potential for my growth as a player – as that has always steered me in the right direction,” Durant said in the article.

“But I am also at a point in my life where it is of equal importance to find an opportunity that encourages my evolution as a man: moving out of my comfort zone to a new city and community which offers the greatest potential for my contribution and personal growth.

With this in mind, I have decided that I am going to join the Golden State Warriors.”

And the 2015 champion Warriors, who squandered a 3-1 NBA Finals lead to lose to LeBron James and the Cavaliers last month, know how tough Durant is in any lineup: They rallied from down 3-1 to beat Durant and the Thunder in a seven-game Western Conference Finals.

Golden State applied a full-court press to land Durant. On Friday in the Hamptons, the Warriors sent owner Joe Lacob, general manager Bob Myers, coach of the year Steve Kerr, Curry and Thompson to meet with the 6-foot-9 superstar.

Durant, the 2014 MVP and fourtime scoring champion, led the Thunder to the NBA Finals in 2012 and to the Western Conference finals in four of the past six years – and he’s only 27. He recovered from a broken bone in his right foot that cost him much of last season to post one of the best years of his career.

Durant met with the Thunder, Warriors, Los Angeles Clippers, Boston Celtics, San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat once teams could begin negotiating with free agents.

With the addition of Durant, the Warriors become the league’s latest team to add a superstar chasing a championship to a lineup of All-Stars.

James made the move from Cleveland to Miami in 2010, joining a lineup that featured Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. They reached four NBA Finals as a group and won two championships.

“I’m from Washington, D.C. originally, but Oklahoma City truly raised me. It taught me so much about family as well as what it means to be a man,” Durant said.

“There are no words to express what the organization and the community mean to me, and what they will represent in my life and in my heart forever. The memories and

friendships are something that go far beyond the game. Those invaluable relationships are what made this deliberation so challenging.

“It really pains me to know that I will disappoint so many people with this choice, but I believe I am doing what I feel is the right thing at this point in my life and my playing career.”

He should be a good fit in Golden State’s varying lineups and gives All-Star Draymond Green another physical body and rebounding presence to complement 3-point aces Curry and Thompson.

The Warriors topped the 199596 Chicago Bulls’ mark and set the NBA regular-season wins record with 73 victories and led the league in scoring.

Durant has been a difficult opponent for the Warriors – he averaged 30 points per game against them in this year’s Western Conference finals and dropped a career-high 54 points on them in 2014.

Adding Durant will give the Warriors another chance to chase a title after the bitter feeling that was this season – a record-setting year that ended without the team’s biggest goal being reached.

Durant has had to carry much of the scoring load for the Thunder over the years, but having Curry, Green and Thompson on the floor with him should open up space he hasn’t had during his tenure in Oklahoma City.

But the Warriors will have to move players to make room for Durant.

Golden State and Dallas have agreed on a deal to send center Andrew Bogut to the Mavericks, a person with knowledge of the deal told the AP. The person said other details of the trade are still being worked out, speaking on the condition of anonymity because the deal cannot be finalized until Thursday.

Before Durant announced his move, Bogut removed all references to the Warriors from his Twitter page, which afterward featured a photo of the 7-footer in an Australia jersey.

The Mavericks also will sign Harrison Barnes to a max fouryear, $94 million deal after Golden State renounces his rights and he becomes an unrestricted free agent, a person told the AP.

Frankfort blogger raising money for cancer treatment after it helped her corgi

FRANKFORT – Many pet owners like to run with their dogs.

In Carleen Coulter’s case, she is running for her dog.

On July 15 and 16, Coulter, formerly of Shorewood and now of Frankfort, will run for an entire day at the Lisle Christmas in July 24-hour race. The purpose is to raise money for The Perseus Foundation, which helps dogs with lymphoma obtain the new and expensive T-cell infusion treatment.

Coulter, a pet blogger for SomePets. com, has written about her dog’s experience. She said her blog post “When Your Dog Has Lymphoma” was recently named one of four finalists in the International BlogPaws Nose to Nose Awards for Best Blog Post.

Coulter learned about T-cell infusion treatment when one of her Pembroke corgis, Ty, now 7, was diagnosed with B-cell lymphoma in May 2015.

“One day he had the sniffles and the next day he had a slight cough,” Coulter said. “We went to the vet and had some antibiotics. Within a week, he wasn’t eating and was very lethargic. They did further tests and lymphoma showed up.”

Chemotherapy

Coulter said Ty was referred to an oncologist in Downers Grove. Ty had six months of chemotherapy and has been in remission for 6 months, but Coulter said remission generally only lasts 14 months, if that.

Ty handled chemotherapy well, but dogs generally do, Coulter said.

“They try not to give such high doses that they’re sick and miserable,” she said. “He had some periods where he was picky about his food or tired the next day after his chemo shot.”

Coulter said dogs generally don’t lose their fur, either, although Ty did lose his whiskers, which have since grown back.

“I found a whisker in his food bowl,” Coulter said. “It was kind of sad.”

Coulter said it cost $3,500 for Ty’s chemo treatments. In hindsight, Coulter wished she’d had pet insurance to help with payments.

“We’re not poor, but we’re not rich either,” Coulter said. “We were able to find the funds, but if we’d had to do it much more, it would have been a hardship.”

Canine T-Cell Project

Coulter did some research and learned about Canine T-Cell Project through Facebook. According to Coulter, this treatment is an immunotherapy procedure for dogs with B-cell lymphoma. It is not effective for dogs with T-cell lymphoma.

Early in a dog’s chemotherapy treatment or after it is in remission, blood is collected from the dog and sent to Dr. Edmund Sullivan, a veterinarian in Washington. Sullivan is part of the scientific team at The Perseus Foundation, which researches cancer treatment for dogs.

The T-cells are then harvested, modified to target cancer, multiplied and sent to the dog’s veterinarian or oncologist, who infuses them into the dog. Ty received two T-cell infusions in June and seems to be doing well, Coulter said.

The benefit, she said, is a longer remission time, and the hope is a cure, but the treatment is expensive. Cost ranges between $3,000 to $5,000. Ty’s treatment was paid through the foundation, Coulter said.

Now she’s fundraising to give back so other dogs can have the same ben-

efits. In addition, Coulter has donated $3,000 to The Perseus Foundation.

Although Coulter is an experienced runner with 14 marathons and two ultra marathons under her feet, along with participation in other runs to benefit animals, the longest she’s run at one time is 8 hours and 40 miles.

She’s striving to make it 23 of the 24 hours and 62 miles at the Lisle event, but it’s not as important to her as helping dogs.

“It’s been a very interesting journey,” Coulter said.

Shoulder replacements have not been readily offered outside of academic medical centers until now.

MORRIS – Sharon Bernico of Ottawa was honored as Morris Hospital and Healthcare Centers’ Fire Starter of the Month for May. A registered nurse at the Radiation Therapy Center of Morris Hospital, Bernico devotes her day to caring for cancer patients who are undergoing radiation treatment. She is described as a nurse with a big heart who is an excellent listener and truly cares about patients.

Bernico started nursing school at age 38. After completing her degree, she worked in a nursing home and then at another hospital before coming to Morris Hospital in 2003 to work in the intensive care unit. A short time later, Bernico transferred to Morris Hospital’s Radiation Therapy Center, where she found her calling.

other physical attributes with the goal of predicting and preventing asthma attacks. The researchers plan to begin testing the system on a larger subject population this summer.

The system, called the Health and Environmental Tracker (HET), is composed of a suite of new sensor devices and was developed by researchers from the National Science Foundation’s Nanosystems Engineering Research Center for Advanced Self-Powered Systems of Integrated Sensors and Technologies at North Carolina State University.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, asthma affects more than 24 million people in the United States. Asthma patients currently rely on inhalers to deal with their symptoms, which can include often-debilitating asthma attacks.

The HET system incorporates a host of novel sensing devices, which are incorporated into a wristband and a patch that adheres to the chest.

The patch includes sensors that track a patient’s movement, heart rate, respiratory rate, the amount of oxygen in the blood, skin impedance and wheezing in the lungs.

The wristband focuses largely on environmental factors, monitoring volatile organic compounds and ozone in the air, as well as ambient humidity and temperature. The wristband also includes additional sensors to monitor motion, heart rate and the amount of oxygen in the blood.

The system also has one nonwearable component: a spirometer, which patients breathe into several times a day to measure lung function.

Viral infections don’t respond to antibiotics

Most sinus infections are viral and will not improve with antibiotics. So it makes little sense to treat every episode of thick, green mucus with antibiotics.

That being said, there are times when antibiotics are warranted. For example, antibiotics might be worth considering when: • an infection drags on for more than 10 days, or gets worse after a week; • the discharge is thick and uniformly white (it looks like pus); • there is a high fever that isn’t improving; • severe symptoms do not respond to the usual over-the-counter sinus and cold remedies.

An overuse of antibiotics has caused an epidemic of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in our environment. Antibiotics can be very beneficial, even life-saving, when used appropriately. But when you’ve got a viral infection, they can’t do anything for you. All they can do is cause side effects and increase the risk of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

The bacteria that cause the most common infections (such as pneumonia, urinary tract infections and sexually transmitted diseases) increasingly have developed resistance to antibiotics. The World Health Organization, for instance, has warned gonorrhea soon may become untreatable.

Your doctor is wise to be cautious in prescribing antibiotics. Too much of a good thing can be bad.

Dear Dr. K: I’ve been under the weather for a few days. This morning I blew my nose and saw greenish mucus, so I called my doctor and requested antibiotics. He refused. Why? Dear Reader: Your doctor is correct not to prescribe antibiotics based on the color of your mucus alone. Despite what many people think, you cannot rely on the color or consistency of nasal discharge to distinguish viral from bacterial sinus infections. That’s an important distinction because only bacterial infections respond to antibiotics.

Color and consistency aren’t even good indicators of whether you’re dealing with an infection at all. Seasonal allergies, for example, can cause thick or thin, yellow, green or clear nasal discharge – even though there’s no infection at all.

Why do we have mucus in the first place?

For one thing, it’s important for hydration.

Mucus is found on tissues that come into contact with elements from the outside world, such as the lining of the nose, sinuses and mouth. These tissues would dry out and crack if mucus didn’t provide moisture.

Mucus also is important for protection.

It is thick and sticky, so it can trap dust, bacteria or other unwanted passers-by in the air and prevent them from entering the body.

Mucus also contains immune system cells, including white blood cells, which kill any bothersome trespassers it catches.

When the white blood cells in the tissue lining encounter an irritant or infectious organism, they produce enzymes to repel the invaders. These enzymes contain iron, which can give nasal discharge a greenish color. If the mucus remains in place (as when you’re sleeping), it becomes more concentrated and so may appear darker green or yellow. This is the natural order of things, whether the offending agent is a virus or a bacterium.

10. “Playful” use of force during sex: Enjoys throwing you down or holding you down against your will during sex; finds the idea of rape exciting.

11. Verbal abuse: Constantly criticizes or says blatantly cruel things; degrades, curses, calls you ugly names.

12. Rigid gender roles: Expects you to serve, obey, remain at home.

13. Sudden mood swings: Switches from sweet to violent in minutes.

14. Past battering: Admits to hitting a mate in the past, but says the person “made” him (or her) do it.

15. Threats of violence: Says things like, “I’ll break your neck” or “I’ll kill you.”

How is that relevant to this deal?

South is in four hearts. West leads the spade jack. What should declarer do?

South was tempted to open two no-trump, despite his six-card major.

Also, he nearly raised North’s one-notrump response to three no-trump, both of which would have worked well here. But eventually he opted for game in his long suit.

Declarer has five possible losers: two spades, one heart, one diamond and one club. Assuming no trump trouble, South will be tempted to take a minor-suit finesse. It is true that if he crosses to dummy’s heart king and takes a winning club or diamond finesse, he will be fine. But if his chosen finesse loses, he will need an opponent to have a singleton king in the other minor, which is so unlikely.

Instead, South should aim at these 10 tricks: one spade, six hearts, two diamonds and one club. He wins with his spade ace, cashes the diamond ace, and leads his second diamond.

West wins and continues spades, then East shifts to a club. South wins with his ace, crosses to the heart king, discards the club queen on the diamond queen, draws trumps, and claims.

All trees requiring maintenance in each area will be addressed during these projects. Property owners may appeal the planned vegetation management activities through ComEd or the Illinois Commerce Commission.
