Pullman Neighborhood – Chicago George Mortimer Pullman was born in Brockton, New York. He and his family soon relocated to the town of Albion, located along the Erie Canal. At age 14, Pullman dropped out of school and began working with his father to move houses during the expansion of the Erie Canal.

In 1859, George Pullman established himself in Chicago as a building raiser and mover. Unlike other cities, Chicago sat just a few feet above the water level of Lake Michigan. Built on a bog, Chicago was unable to construct a sewage system without first raising the level of the streets. Using his knowledge of relocating buildings to new foundations, Pullman invented a method to raise Chicago’s buildings to the new grade level. In doing so, Pullman made an early fortune. After raising buildings, Pullman turned his attention to railroads.

In the 1860s, cross-country trains were considered cramped and uncomfortable as well as dangerous. Pullman sought to change this by designing a rail car that would provide comfortable and elegant accommodations for overnight travelers.

In 1864, the first Pullman sleeping car, the Pioneer, was constructed.

The Pioneer was not an instant success, but did receive national attention when it was chosen as the car to take President Lincoln’s body from Washington D.C. to Springfield, Illinois. The attention caused an increased demand for his cars, and by 1867, Pullman founded the Pullman Palace Car Company. The Pullman Palace Car Company bought 4,000 acres for its location and hired architect Solon Spencer Beman and landscape architect Nathan Barrett to design the buildings and the layout of Pullman and factories.

George Pullman looked for a solution to labor unrest in the late 19th century. Pullman wanted to avoid the workers who had participated in the 1877 Railroad Strike or those he believed to morally corrupted by urban poverty and social dislocation.

Most of the town was built between 1880 and 1884, and the center of the town was his railroad car business.

The brick housing for the workers was separated from the industrial areas and was primarily lined throughout the community as row houses with streets in front and alleys in the rear for trash collection.

The housing was constructed with modern conveniences such as indoor plumbing, sewage and a gas works. The town would not be complete without public facilities such as stores, schools, office buildings, a bank, library, theater, post office, church, parks and recreational facilities.

The factors at Pullman attracted thousands of immigrant workers, most of whom were skilled workers. They desired a higher salary than unskilled workers.

The depression of 1893 to 1894 caused Pullman to reduce his workers’ wages and hours. When Pullman workers went

on strike in 1894, protesting cuts in wages while rents remained unchanged, the strike captured national attention.

After the strike, commentators from across the nation debated the proper nature of the relationship between employers and employees, as well as the social, political and economic rights of working-class men and women. In 1898, the Illinois Supreme Court ruled that the company had to divest itself of residential property in Pullman. By the end of the first decade of the 20th century, the company of Pullman no longer owned the residential property around the industrial complex.

On Feb. 19, 2015, President Barack Obama designated Pullman as a National Monument, making it a component of the National Park Service.

Band directors seek harmony among schools, community

fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Marching bands at all four Lincoln-Way District 210 high schools have combined into one – representing, for one band director, a new unified era for the district.

“We’re seizing an opportunity to create some strength and pride in the community,” said Christopher Mroczek, one of several directors of the newly unified Lincoln-Way Marching Band.

The community will have a chance to see for itself Monday at the Mokena Fourth of July parade, when more than 300 students will play in the band’s first public performance.

Over the past school year, district officials began the process of transitioning from four schools to three with the closing Lincoln-Way North. The school was chosen last August by the Board of Education to close in an effort to resolve the district’s financial crisis.

That choice has been the source of controversy, as well as a lawsuit.

“There’s been a lot of pains in our district with everything that is going on. We’re taking this opportunity to do something the community can get excited about and take pride in,” Mroczek said.

Mroczek said the directors wanted to create an experience that would be the same for students district-wide, since many of them worried about the changes coming to Lincoln-Way as it downsized.

District officials said in a news release that discussions of combining all four bands began last fall.

Mroczek and other directors – Bert Johnson, Justin Barnish and Cary Ruklic – came up with the idea to create figurative and literal harmony among the schools and community, district officials said.

The directors polled parents and students on the idea. More than 90 percent of students and 89 percent of parents liked it, according to the district.

Civil War flag from regiment on display

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Civil War flag of what was called “the Will County regiment” is back home and can be seen in an exhibit at the Joliet Area Historical Museum.

The museum held a ceremony last week to celebrate the success of a fouryear-long project to stabilize the flag so it could be brought back to Will County and put on display.

Bringing the flag to Joliet cost $25,000 and involved about 230 hours of work on the flag itself. Joliet Township contributed $20,000 to the project.

Robert Kuzma, a museum board member who led the effort to return the flag, said its display is one way to commemorate Will County’s contribution in the Civil War. “It’s a reminder that though no battle was fought here, the Civil War was lived here,” Kuzma said.

The flag was carried into battle by the 100th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment.

It’s a Union flag that includes the names of 16 different engagements in which the regiment fought, going from Lavergne to Nashville and including Chicamauga and Mission Ridge. The name of each engagement was added to the flag after the battles.

The flag technically is on loan from the Illinois State Military Museum, where it was stabilized.

It was not restored, emphasized Alex Dixon, textile conservator at the museum. Dixon, who was at the Joliet ceremony, worked on the flag with three volunteers who, he said, “conserved” it to prevent further deterioration.

flags were taken down for preservation in 2003 because of the extent of deterioration that was occurring.

“It was incredible,” Dixon said, “but you would look at them and beneath them would be piles of scraps from the flag themselves because they would shred.”

Dixon said work on the flag of the 100th regiment started sometime in late 2013 or early 2014. It involved common items such as Q-tips to painstakingly clean an estimated 1,000 strands of gold flag fringe and more sophisticated devices to gently vacuum the last fragments of dirt.

what remained and not try to restore it with the use of modern materials to a semblance of its original state.

But the flag retained much, Dixon said. So much that one museum employee contracted poison ivy from touching it and needed to take allergy medications to stop the sneezing and coughing that otherwise would occur

while working on the flag, Dixon said.

“The stuff that it was going through 150 years ago is still on the flag,” he said.

The flag is one of 18 on loan from the Illinois State Military Museum, including one captured Confederate flag that is in Mississippi.

Kuzma said he hopes the flag of the 100th Illinois and the new Civil War exhibit at the museum will inspire those who have local artifacts from the war to provide them for display.

“It is well to remember that those who returned built our city and our county, and we must remember them in this exhibit,” he said. “We have only just begun to tell the story of this era of Joliet’s history.”

Namesake statue to be added to Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery

bokon@shawmedia.com ELWOOD – Bringing a bronze statue of Abraham Lincoln to his namesake national cemetery has not been easy.

But after years of effort raising $150,000 and even taking a trip to Washington, D.C., to get the government’s OK, the statue has arrived.

A dedication ceremony is scheduled for Sept. 11, said Don Walden, chairman of the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery Support Committee.

The statue is in storage. The platform area, which will include seating and landscaping, is still under construction at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Walden said.

But the committee is looking forward to the dedication ceremony that will culminate its efforts to have Lincoln represented with a life-size statue at the cemetery.

“When we bring kids out for a field trip, they can see the actual size of Lincoln,” Walden said. “We can explain to them why he started the national cemetery system.”

Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery is part of the national cemetery system started after the Civil War by Lincoln and administered today by Veterans Affairs’ National Cemetery Administration.

Walden said committee representatives had to make a trip to Washington to meet with VA officials, who laid out certain restrictions on the statue.

“They said, ‘You can have the statue, but it must be within 1 inch of his life size,’” Walden said.

The statue is 6 feet, 4 inches tall, corresponding with Lincoln’s height.

The statue will be along Memorial Walkway. Benches will offer visitors an opportunity to rest and provide a place for schoolchildren to sit as they hear about Lincoln and the cemetery, Walden said.

He said the committee appreciates the help of the many donors to the statue project.

“I just want to say thank you very much for all the help we had raising money – from governmental bodies to veterans organizations to just people,” he said. “This statue represents so much.”

Treat all animals, not just yours, with kindness Many years ago, while traveling by car with my kids, we stopped at a restaurant for a midday meal. As we walked to the entrance, we saw a dog inside a car. It was a hot summer day, and the dog was panting terribly.

Typically, my boys would get upset when I confronted people in their presence, but this time they were right behind me when I informed the restaurant manager. He, in turn, announced it to the customers and said he would call the police if someone didn’t get the dog out immediately.

I still applaud that manager today for doing the right thing. And the dog was safe; at least that time. Reader Bonnie Kirk of Plainfield urged me to write about treating pets with respect and kindness, and not leaving them in cars whether it’s hot or cold outside.

Most people think they’ll be gone just a few minutes, or if they leave the window open it will make a difference.

A study cited by the American Veterinary Medical Association showed that temperatures in vehicles parked on a

Think of what it feels like on a scorching hot day when you return to your car even after a short time. The seats feel like they could burn your legs, the air is stifling, and the sun is beating down and intensifying through the glass of the windows. An animal can quickly become overheated, which can result in heat stroke and death.

Kirk also reminds us to make sure a pet is properly restrained while riding in a car. The AVMA agrees.

A loose, small pet could get down by your feet and interfere with the brake or gas pedal. An animal on your lap could be crushed between you and the

steering wheel or airbag in a sudden stop or accident. Unrestrained pets can be thrown out windows.

While it may seem cute or funny to see a dog with its head out the window, ears and jowls flapping in the wind, the dog is at risk for all sorts of injuries from debris flying around that could get in its eyes or even cause cuts.

“Please remind people to keep their animals safe in their cars,” said Kirk, “as if they are human beings.”

Another good reminder is to be sure you are prepared when you travel with a pet. Mallard Point Veterinary Clinic in Channahon suggests you make sure your pet has proper ID and proof of rabies, has adequate food and water while traveling in a vehicle, and is tucked away safely in a comfy crate.

With the Fourth of July and ensuing celebrations this week, remember that loud noises can not only be frightening but dangerous for animals, causing them to run away. Fireworks and even sparklers can cause severe burns to noses and paws.

“City firework displays are not fun for pets. Please leave your dog at home if you’re planning to go out,” the clinic stated in an email. Animals should be kept safely inside and/or away from the sounds of fireworks and celebrations.

Holiday foods are not healthy for pets either, and I learned the hard way. My Boston terrier nearly died of pancreatitis following a summer party. One guest asked if Gizmo could have a “little bite.” Unbeknownst to me, everyone was giving Gizmo “little bites” of all kinds of foods. He was very sick that summer and almost didn’t pull through.

If we take on the responsibility of being a pet owner, we should take our pets’ safety and comfort into consideration at all times, even when it seems inconvenient. Those extra precautions can mean the world to your beloved pet.

She said she’s been able to meet new people that she wouldn’t have at West.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for all of us to be together,” she said.

Gillian Nevins, a Central student in the band’s drumline, agreed.

“So many doors and opportunities have opened for us. We can perform in bigger competitions now that we have more people,” Nevins said.

Mark Norden, another Central student in the drumline, said the unifica-

tion of the bands is a good way to put Lincoln-Way on the map and meet new people. He was excited about Monday’s performance at the parade.

“I think we’re going to rock it. I think we’re ready to go,” he said.

Although there was friendly competitiveness between the bands beforehand, that disappeared once they became one group.

“I made a lot of new friends so far in just two weeks,” Norden said.

All three students were excited to see what’s in store for the marching band in the future.

“We’re all here for the same reason, and that’s to make this season the best it can possibly be,” Nevins said.

Joliet man charged in connection with 2012 slaying killed in traffic crash

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A one-time co-defendant in a Joliet murder trial died early Sunday morning after being in a traffic crash.

Jermain K. Bennett, 42, of Joliet, was pronounced dead at 12:05 a.m. Sunday at the emergency department of Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office.

Bennett was riding at 10:37 p.m. Saturday on a Honda CVR 900 motorcycle when he ran into the side of a 2014 Dodge Charger at Third Avenue and Richards Street, according to police and fire reports.

“Witnesses said Bennett was traveling northbound at a high rate of speed when he went into the intersection and struck the westbound Charger,” Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory said.

Bennett was not wearing a helmet and suffered “massive injuries” as the motorcycle landed on top of him, Gregory said. The coroner’s office said the

preliminary cause of death, based on an autopsy done Sunday, was multiple injuries because of the collision.

Loria Ware, 50, of Joliet, was not carrying any passengers in the Charger.

Firefighters said Ware declined medical treatment.

“She gave officers permission to go in her car and get her driver’s license from her purse,” Gregory said. “When officers opened the door they smelled a strong odor of cannabis and found baggies of cannabis and [unprescribed] pills in her purse.”

Ware allegedly failed field sobriety tests and was taken to Presence Saint Joseph for a blood draw, according to authorities. She was then taken to the police station for questioning, but complained of chest pains and was taken back to the hospital, Gregory said.

Ware has been charged with aggravated driving under the influence, drug possession and marijuana possession.

On Aug. 9, 2012, Sean D. McGinn arrived to meet Bennett at the KO Zone, a gym they co-owned at 218 E. Cass St. Police said McGinn had brought thousands of dollars to buy cocaine from Bennett, who instead planned to

rob him.

Kenneth G. Edwards, Bennett’s cousin, was waiting in the parking lot and shot McGinn twice while Bennett took the cash, according to investigators. Police said the drugs Bennett had promised to deliver did not exist.

Nearby residents overheard the shots and called police. Bennett was arrested the day after McGinn’s slaying, while Edwards was arrested in October 2013.

Bennett initially was charged with murder but last year pleaded guilty to robbery in exchange for testifying against Edwards at his upcoming murder trial. Bennett spent more than three years in jail on the charges, but has been free on bond since April 27 while awaiting sentencing, according to court and jail records, and was subject to house arrest as a condition of his release.

Edwards was released on a recognizance bond after additional DNA testing was needed – jeopardizing his right to a speedy trial, Special Prosecutor Dave Neal has said during court proceedings in the past year.

PEOTONE TOWNSHIP – A Homewood teenager was killed Saturday after being struck by a semi truck.

Sarah M. Hank, 19, of Homewood, was pronounced dead at 4 p.m.

Saturday at the intersection of Wilmington-Peotone and Center roads in Peotone Township.

She was the driver of a vehicle struck by a semi tractor-trailer, according to the coroner’s office.

The Will County Sheriff’s Office is investigating; an autopsy done Sunday found the preliminary cause of death to be multiple injuries due to the crash. The final cause will be determined at a later date pending autopsy reports, toxicology reports and police investigation.

Didier had a certification in geriatric rehabilitation, Weidner said, which meant patients at OLA had physical and occupational therapy long before those therapies were known by those names.

“Sister Peter had her own care plan,” Weidner said, “and she followed it.”

Papesh said Didier’s ability to pinpoint certain medication situations in patients earned her the respect of the area medical professionals.

“If licensing for nurse practitioners was part of the medical scene in the 1970s, she would have passed the exam hands down,” Papesh said.

Girls attending the former St. Francis Academy – where Didier taught math and science from 1945 to 1950 – often came to OLA after school during the afternoon shift, Papesh said, with many of them actually becoming nurses and returning to thank Didier for her mentoring.

“They always said she was the best teacher,” Papesh said.

Didier retired from director of

nursing in 1998, but she did not retire from OLA. She lived at the retirement home until her death June 27, making her OLA’s longest resident. She served its community by distributing newspapers and mail, and sitting with the dying.

Pitz said Didier had a statue of St. Peter that she’d set near the bed of a dying person, along with this message: “St. Peter is waiting for you when you are ready.”

“So we did the same thing for her,” Pitz said. “We put St. Peter at her bedside Sunday afternoon and she passed away early Monday evening.”

Friends may pay their respects to Didier from 2 to 6:45 p.m. July 5 at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home, 1201 Wyoming Ave., Joliet. A prayer service will begin at 4:45 p.m. and a Mass of Christian Burial will be at 7 p.m.

JOLIET – “Sister Peter had been the living cornerstone of Our Lady of Angels since the day the doors opened 55 years ago.”

So said George Block, administrator at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home in Joliet. Certainly Sister Peter Didier, former director of nursing at OLA, set and enforced strict rules.

Patients had to be well-groomed and that included their hair. They had to wear shoes. Women had to wear makeup, earrings, and skirts or dresses. Didier respected people and always wanted them to be presentable, said Sister Albert Marie Papesh, OLA administrator from 1972 to 1989.

For Didier – who earned her nursing degree in 1952 from the St. Joseph School of Nursing in Joliet and always wore a full habit – this emphasis on clothing wasn’t about externals.

“When you’re dressed up, you feel better about yourself,” said Sister Yvonne Weidner, OLA administrator

from 2001 to 2003.

Didier’s regard for the human person went beyond appearance. Sister Phyllis Pitz, OLA administrator from 1989 to 2001, said Didier cared for patients as individuals and respected them as people.

“She believed quality of care equaled quality of dignity,” Pitz said.

Didier’s rules protected that dignity.

For instance, Weidner said, wheelchairs weren’t allowed in the dining room. If patients couldn’t walk alone, someone assisted them, Sister all the way to the table, Peter Didier if necessary. During meals, everyone sat in regular chairs.

Each afternoon, patients engaged in exercise and “ball tosses,” Papesh said, to give patients energy and opportunities to socialize. Didier, who was one of 14 children, also acquainted herself with family members; she prayed for her patients’ needs.

Elie Wiesel was a witness to evil and a symbol of endurance

NEW YORK – The frail, dapper man who sometimes greeted reporters in his Madison Avenue office spoke in an almost hushed voice, but with urgency, his hands gesturing gently for emphasis. Elie Wiesel’s smile was wry, diffident, a thin facade over the sadness imprinted in the weary eyes and deep creases of a face that mirrored his brutal past.

The Auschwitz survivor and Nobel Peace Prize winner, who has died at age 87, was an ongoing reminder of one man’s endurance of the Nazi Holocaust.

His words, destined to last far into the future, are a testament to some of the most unfathomable atrocities in recorded history.

“Whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation, take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented,” he said in 1986, upon accepting the Nobel.

Wiesel’s death was announced Saturday by Israel’s Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial. No other details were immediately available.

After retirement, she loved to golf, walking 18 holes almost every day.

Her smile lit up her beautiful blue eyes and she talked and talked to everyone. She never met a stranger.

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois has redefined what it means to have a late budget.

Other states have gone several months without a spending plan before, and Illinois has had prior delays that caused great anxiety. But going an entire fiscal year without a full budget?

It’s the only time in post-World War II history it’s happened in the country.

“Late budgets will have a new meaning after you guys are done,” said Arturo Perez, a fiscal analyst with the National Conference of State Legislatures who has researched past overdue budgets nationally.

So what did past budget delays here and elsewhere look like? And how did Illinois get to this point? Here’s a look.

JUST A MOMENT

Jim Edgar found himself in an unsettling position as Illinois governor in 1991 when the state went 18 days without a budget.

“We thought ’91 was protracted, and it looks like child’s play compared to what they’ve gone through this year,” the former Republican governor said.

The 1991 standoff, which Edgar said “seems like just a moment” compared to today, kept staff at colleges from collecting their paychecks.

At the time, Edgar said the state had not experienced a budget delay like it.

CHICAGO – Former Illinois Gov. Jim Edgar has been critical of fellow Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner over the state’s ongoing budget stalemate. But Edgar also is a partner in a business that is trying to make money off the crisis.

Edgar is a partner and chairman of the board of Illinois Financing Partners.

In 1991, a bad economy forced layoffs and budget cuts, but the gridlock was over what to do about a temporary two-year income tax surcharge that brought $700 million annually to schools and local governments.

Edgar and legislators resolved their differences by agreeing to make the surcharge for education permanent, while extending the tax for local governments for another two years.

There were other late-budget scares

in revenue for fiscal 2014, $501,000 for fiscal 2015 and $532,000 for fiscal 2016.

About 57 live adult entertainment facilities were identified by the Illinois Coalition Against Sexual Assault when it was conducting research on the industry as it supported legislation calling for the tax, according to executive director Polly Poskin.

“We anticipated it would be a greater number of clubs that would be paying, and we would have anticipated about a million in revenue,” Poskin said. She said she doesn’t know “if the tax that they’re paying is accurate and consistent with their gross receipts.”

But she said the money received does help Illinoisans who have been sexually assaulted.

“[It’s] greatly needed and greatly appreciated and well used,” Poskin said.

New invasive plant with toxic sap in southern Wisconsin

MILWAUKEE – A giant invasive plant with toxic sap that can burn human skin has turned up in southeastern Wisconsin for the first time, state environmental officials say.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported that the Department of Natural Resources confirmed in June that hundreds of giant hogweed plants were present in Sheboygan.

The plant is a native of the Caucasus region of Eurasia, between the Black and Caspian seats. It was brought to the United Kingdom and to the United States in

1917 as an ornamental plant. It can grow to as high as 20 feet and sprout 3-foot leaves.

It is fast-growing, invading roadsides, the edges of forests and empty lots. It also produces thousands of seeds, which can be dispersed by flowing water or animals. The most common way it spreads, however, is by humans who are attracted by its size and decide to plant it.

Giant hogweed can crowd out native species and its sap contains glucosides that react with the sun’s ultraviolet rays and can severely burn the skin, cause blisters or cause temporary blindness.

It’s been found in Michigan, Illinois, Maine, New York, Pennsylvania, Oregon and Washington. It was first discovered in Wisconsin in 2004.

Jimmy John’s owner gives $150,000 to Illinois trail project

MAHOMET – The owner of the Jimmy John’s sandwich chain has donated $150,000 to a rail trail being built in eastern Illinois.

According to The News-Gazette in Champaign, Jimmy John Liautaud said he decided to make the donation after recently reading about efforts by the Kickapoo Rail Trail’s planners to raise money. He called the trail good for the area. Jimmy John’s is based in Champaign.

The Champaign County Forest Preserve District and others are building the 24.5-mile Kickapoo Rail Trail. The first segment would be 6.7 miles and is under construction between Urbana and the small town of St. Joseph.

BAGHDAD – A suicide truck bomb in downtown Baghdad killed 115 people and wounded nearly 200 others who were out shopping and celebrating early Sunday ahead of the holiday marking the end of Ramadan, security and medical officials said.

The attack, claimed by the Islamic State group, was the deadliest in months in the Iraqi capital, and came despite a series of recent gains against the extremists, including the capture of Fallujah, which was believed to have been a source of such attacks.

The bomb went off shortly after midnight in a crowded shopping area in the central Karada district, killing at least 115 people and wounding 187, according to a police official.

The dead included at least 15 children, 10 women and six policemen. At least 12 other people were still missing and feared dead.

Karada is a major commercial area lined with clothing and jewelry stores, restaurants and cafés, and was packed with shoppers ahead of Wednesday’s Eid al-Fitr holiday marking the end of Ramadan. Most of the victims were inside a multi-story shopping and amusement mall, where dozens burned to death or suffocated, police said.

It was the deadliest attack in Iraq since July 2015 and among the worst single bombings in more than a decade of war and insurgency.

“It was like an earthquake,” said Karim

Sami, a 35-year-old street vendor. “I wrapped up my goods and was heading home when I saw a fireball with a thunderous bombing,” the father of three said.

“I was so scared to go back and started to make phone calls to my friends, but none answered.” He said that one of his friends was killed, another was wounded and one was still missing.

As with many previous attacks, IS swiftly claimed responsibility for the bombing in a statement posted online, saying it had targeted Shiite Muslims. The Associated Press could not verify the authenticity of the statement, but it was posted on a militant website commonly used by the extremists.

Firefighters and civilians could be seen carrying the dead away, their bodies wrapped in blankets and sheets. Smoke billowed from the shopping center, which was surrounded by the twisted and burned wreckage of cars and market stalls. A group of women were sitting on the pavement, crying for their loved ones.

Elsewhere in Baghdad, a roadside bomb went off in the mostly Shiite Shaab neighborhood, killing five people and wounding 16, another police officer said. No group claimed responsibility for the attack, but it bore the hallmarks of IS militants.

The Sunni extremists frequently target the country’s Shiite majority and Shiite-led security forces, viewing them as apostates deserving of death.

Slammers start fast, hold off Windy City

cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Runs were difficult to come by for the Joliet Slammers in the first two games of their weekend series against Windy City.

After scoring just three times in two games, it’s obvious why Joliet manager Jeff Isom liked what he saw during the first two innings of Sunday’s finale with the ThunderBolts.

The Slammers collected eight hits and six runs during those first two in-

nings, and that helped them to a season-high 16 hits with four home runs as they went on to win a wild 12-9 Frontier League game at Silver Cross Field.

Joliet (27-19) improved to 14-6 at home and moved four games ahead of Windy City (23-22) in the East Division.

But the outcome wasn’t determined until the visitors scored five times in the ninth and had the go-ahead run at the plate before the Slammers finally ended things.

It was the eighth series win since the beginning of June for the Slam-

mers. The other series, at Windy City, wound up as a split. During that time, Joliet is 19-7 and leads its division by 3.5 games over Washington, which opens a midweek series Tuesday at Silver Cross Field.

The Slammers received at least two hits from five different players, and seven individuals drove in runs. Carter Bell (four RBIs), Marc Flores (two RBIs) and Charlie White led the way with three hits each. But the offense wasn’t the only highlight, as their infield also turned four double plays.

“We came out firing,” Bell said. “We realize that they’re another top team in this league and this was an important series. We felt like we should have come out with that one last night, so we really wanted to jump out today and make a statement, and I think we did that. We knew that we had to score since they’re a great offensive team, as well. All of us pride ourselves on defense since pitching and defense win ballgames.”

MORRIS – There is a certain importance attached to what high school basketball teams attempt to get accomplished in the summer.

For Plainfield Central, which is working to rebound from last season’s 3-21 record, the summer may be more vital than it is for most.

“We’re finding ways to win games this summer,” Central coach Steve Laberti said during last week’s 31st annual Morris Boys shootout. “It’s awesome that these guys who had a hard time winning last season are finding ways this summer. They are holding leads, coming from behind, giving themselves opportunities to win.

“And, they’re good kids.”

The Wildcats’ roster features seniors Sedrick Brooks, Kameron Williams and Michael Hood. They all saw significant minutes last season and will be counted on to lead the way.

Brooks dislocated a finger earlier in the summer and did not play at Morris. Lamberti said even though he may have been able to play if necessary, there was no reason to rush his return at this juncture.

“All our seniors will have to play a lot next season,” Lamberti said.

“The good thing is they are versatile.

They have the potential to do different things. We’re not tiny, but we’re not big so we will need everyone to do different things.”

“I’ll probably do a little of everything,” Hood said. “We don’t really have a lot of size. We’ll probably do a lot of five-person offense.”

Hood said he feels he has learned from the 3-21 experience of last season.

“Last year was a learning process,” he said. “I was a little big-headed, a little cocky. I feel like I’m maturing as a player. I know now what I can do and can’t do. I have to lead by example.

“We’ve been playing well together.

We have taken last year’s experience and progressed. You look around at the new guys, the juniors who are coming up, they’re crazy. They play for one another. There is no selfishness in them.”

Lamberti said the Wildcats have been fun to watch as they mold into a unit “We have shared the ball well this summer,” he said. “It has been fun to watch. The guys have committed themselves. If we win or lose, they have the right mentality. That’s what we pride ourselves in.”

Along with the rest of the Southwest Prairie Conference, the Wildcats are awaiting the arrival of Joliet Central and Joliet West into the confer-

ence. Year in and year in, those have been two programs that likely will be candidates for the first division in the league.

“It’s exciting to see new competition, new people, in our conference,” Hood said. “It’s going to helped our conference be more mixed up.”

“Our conference already was a battle every night,” Lamberti said. “Now the level of interest is up a notch with the Joliet’s coming in. You have two quality teams that you throw into the mix, it makes it that much more fun.

“What an awesome opportunity it is for us and the rest of the conference to play teams of that caliber a couple of times a season.”

Lamberti said the Wildcats played in a “sectional” shootout a week earlier at Oswego. It brought together 14 of the teams that were in the same Class 4A sectional a year ago.

His impression?

“Joliet West is terrific and Bolingbrook is big and deep,” he said, adding that “someone may be able to beat West (in the postseason in the winter), but it’s hard to say at this point who that somebody would be.”

2015 Joliet winners have one win between them this year

cherron@shawmedia.com The four winners of last year’s Route 66 NHRA Nationals are hoping for a little deja vu at the Route 66 Raceway this weekend as the Mello Yello series heads into the second half of its schedule.

So far this year, Tony Schumacher, Tommy Johnson Jr., Allen Johnson and Hector Arana Jr. have claimed just one win in the 41 events between them. Although three of the four drivers are ranked among the top five in points in their respective divisions, all of their top-scoring events happened within the last month.

The lone winner of the group is Tommy Johnson Jr., who won the Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol on June 19. He also took second at New England Nationals in Epping on June 5. Those efforts helped put him in fifth in the Funny Car division, 216 points behind leader Ron Capps, who has collected four wins so far, including beating Johnson for the title at Epping.

Courtney Force and Jack Beckman sit behind Capps, while Del Worsham is 12 points ahead of Johnson, and Matt Hagan, who has won twice this year, is three points behind him. Johnson’s victory at Bristol came over Hagan.

A year ago at Joliet, Johnson claimed his first victory in more than a year

when he beat Hagan in the finals.

Schumacher, the eight-time Top Fuel world champion and all-time winner in that division, as well as a five-time winner at Joliet, is still looking for his first victory of the year. His best showings so far were runner-up finishes to Shawn Langdon at Bristol and to Steve Torrence at Summernationals in Englishtown on June 12.

Doug Kalitta, a three-time winner, leads defending world champion Antron Brown 1,009-940 for first place in the division, while Torrence leads Brittany Force 846-832 for third place.

Schumacher has 729 points, which places him 18 points ahead of Langdon. Last year at Joliet, Schumacher defeated Larry Dixon to claim the title.

Among last year’s Joliet champions, Allen Johnson has the best place in the points standings, at fourth in Pro Stock. But he’s well behind seven-time winner Jason Line and fivetime victor Greg Anderson, who’ve won all 12 races this year and have already clinched spots in the Countdown to the Championship, which make up the last six events in the series.

Johnson has 719 points, which places him 670 points behind Line and 555 behind Anderson. Bo Butner is one spot ahead of Johnson, while Drew Skillman is just behind him. His best showing this year was a runner-up finish to Anderson at Epping. A year ago at Joliet, Johnson beat Larry Morgan for the title.

Arana Jr., who beat Matt Smith last year and his father, Hector Arana, the year before to win Pro Stock Motorcycle titles at Joliet, has been experiencing a tough season so far. In five races, his best finish came at Englishtown, where he was eliminated in the quarterfinals. As a result, he’s in 12th place in the standings with 168 points, 11 points out of the top 10.

Eddie Krawiec, a three-time winner this season, leads the division with 557 points, while two-time defending world champion Andrew Hines and Gerald Savoie are tied for second with 391 points.

“The guys at the top of the lineup are putting myself, Marc and Boo (Vazquez), when he was here, in great situations to drive runners in, and when they’re always in scoring position, it puts a lot of pressure on the opposing pitcher,” Bell added. “You can tell that they’re feeling the heat, and we can kind of relax as hitters and just do our job.”

The good times started in the first for the hosts when White (3 for 4) and Alfredo Rodriguez (2 for 5) singled before Bell (3 for 5) smacked a three-run shot to left.

After Flores (3 for 5) and Jake Gronsky (2 for 5) both got singles, Melvin Rodriguez drove in the fourth run with an infield grounder.

Slammers starter and winner Sean Townsley (4-4) allowed only two hits through the first five innings but gave up four in the sixth, however, only two of those scored before he exited.

Joliet scored three times in the bottom of that inning to go up 11-3. White led off with a homer to right, Bell doubled and Flores singled him in before Gronsky got an RBI single.

After both squads scored runs in the eighth, with Flores hitting a homer, the ThunderBolts staged a big rally in the ninth against three different pitchers.

They not only cut the lead to three runs but also had the potential go-ahead run at the plate with two outs before Brent Choban coaxed a liner to collect the save.

Windy City, which also utilized five pitchers and collected 12 hits, also had five players with multiple hits, with Corey Bass going 3 for 5 with a home run to lead the way.

“We definitely needed every run,” Isom said. “They’re a tough team and those outs in the ninth are tough to get.

It was good to get on the board early and get six runs against Fisher, who’s a very good pitcher, and we’ve had problems with him before. The glaring part is that we made it interesting in the ninth inning when we shouldn’t have.

“We built this team around defense, and if you look at our infield, we’ve got guys that are going to make plays. And we’re getting offense out of them, too, which is a bonus. We just want to continue to win ballgames and be competitive and not get in these situations. But the good thing is that we found a way to get out of the last inning when it could have really steamrolled into something very bad.”

Quintana snaps losing skid as White Sox beat Astros

HOUSTON – Jose Quintana has been pitching well over his last nine starts but had gone 0-7 in large part because the White Sox had managed just nine total runs in that span.

So when his team tacked on a pair of runs in the eighth inning to pad a one-run lead, Quintana was more than a little excited. “(It was a) good reaction because ... sometimes I wait for runs,” Quintana said. “I (do) my job and I wait for support, and today the lineup made a good effort.”

Quintana pitched seven solid innings to get his first win in almost two months, and Jose Abreu had two hits and an RBI to lead the Sox over the Houston Astros, 4-1, on Sunday.

Quintana (6-8) allowed a season-low two hits and one run while fanning four for his first win since May 8. His losing streak was the longest in the majors.

“Even as difficult as it can be for him to get run support he never wavers as far as his own confidence in what he can do,” manager Robin Ventura said.

“He’s one of the better pitchers in the league. If he can get some run support, his record obviously is a lot different.

George Springer hit a leadoff homer and drew a walk with no outs in the third. Quintana sailed through the rest of his day, retiring his last 15 batters before he was replaced by Nate Jones to start the eighth inning. Jones pitched a

perfect eighth to make it 18 in a row before David Robertson allowed a single and walk before striking out rookie A.J. Reed for his 23rd save.

Brett Lawrie and Dioner Navarro added RBI singles in the eighth inning to push the lead to 4-1.

Houston starter Collin McHugh (5-6) allowed five hits and two runs while walking four with nine strikeouts in 52/3 innings to remain winless since May 30.

Things got testy late in this one after Chris Devenski plunked Abreu in the left shoulder with two outs in the seventh inning. Abreu remained at the plate and stared at Devenski until an umpire escorted him to first base.

With two outs in the bottom of the inning, Quintana threw behind Evan Gattis twice to earn a warning from home plate umpire Ryan Blakney.

Houston manager A.J. Hinch immediately dashed out of the dugout after the second one and got in Blakney’s face repeatedly yelling: “He threw behind him,” and pointing behind Gattis. He was soon ejected and things settled down after that.

Quintana insisted he didn’t purposely throw behind Gattis.

“I tried to go inside and I missed the spot,” he said. “A couple of time today I missed in too much. That’s all.”

The Astros disagreed.

Flores 6 for 6 with 2 HRs; Mets romp to 4-game sweep of Cubs

NEW YORK – Wilmer Flores went 6 for 6 with two of New York’s five home runs, and the Mets romped to another four-game sweep of the Cubs by battering Jon Lester Sunday in a 14-3 blowout.

Curtis Granderson homered immediately in his return to the starting lineup, and New York also got long balls from Rene Rivera and pinch-hitter Kelly Johnson while setting season highs for runs and hits (22) in support of Noah Syndergaard (9-3).

Before Friday night, the Mets had never hit five home runs in a game at Citi Field, which opened in 2009. They did it twice in 45 hours against a Cubs pitching staff that began the day with a 2.97 ERA – by far the lowest in the majors.

After sweeping four games from the Cubs in the NL Championship Series last October, the Mets outscored the Cubs 32-11 in winning their first four matchups this year. It was New York’s first four-game sweep of the Cubs in the

Cubs manager Joe Maddon began pulling starters in the sixth. By the seventh, catcher Miguel Montero was on the mound – throwing pitches that mostly ranged from 79-84 mph as he yielded one run and four hits in 11/3innings.

Flores drove in four runs, scored three and raised his batting average

from .224 to .255. He joined Edgardo Alfonzo as the only Mets players with six hits in a game. Alfonzo did it in August 1999 at Houston.

Granderson homered in the first inning and had an RBI single an inning later. Flores hit a leadoff homer and an RBI single in the second, part of a seven-run outburst that included eight hits and spelled the end of a brief and miser-

able day for Lester (9-4), the NL pitcher of the month in June.

The left-hander gave up eight runs and nine hits in 11/3 innings, the shortest of his 301 career starts over 11 major league seasons. He entered with a 2.03 ERA that ranked second in the majors to injured Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw (1.78).

Rivera knocked in three runs, and every Mets starter had at least one hit.

After allowing his only run in the first, Syndergaard ended up enjoying an easy afternoon in a pitching matchup of potential All-Stars.

Showing no ill effects from the bone spur in his elbow that he called insignificant, the big right-hander bounced back nicely from his worst start of the season last week in Washington. He threw 84 pitches in seven innings, striking out eight and walking none.

Up next: Cubs: RHP Kyle Hendricks (6-6, 2.76 ERA) pitches Monday against Cincinnati LHP Cody Reed (0-2, 9.00) in the opener of a three-game series that features all day games. “Sub-optimal, in a sense,” manager Joe Maddon said.

The Associated Press Rajon Rondo has a new beginning in Chicago, and the Bulls have a new starting point guard.

The four-time All-Star agreed Sunday on a $30 million, two-year deal, a person with knowledge of the Rajon Ronda negotiations told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because no deal can be signed un-

til the league’s offseason moratorium ends on Thursday.

Rondo becomes the Bulls’ replacement at point guard for Derrick Rose, the former NBA MVP who was traded to the New York Knicks last month.

The Bulls become Rondo’s fourth team in less than two years. He spent 8½ seasons in Boston, winning a championship with the Celtics in 2008. The Celtics traded him to Dallas in December 2014, and Rondo spent last season in Sacramento.

Rondo averaged 11.9 points and an NBA-best 11.7 assists with

the Kings. Last season was the fourth in which Rondo averaged a double-double, and the first time he did so since 2012-13 – the last of his four All-Star seasons with the Celtics.

Rondo had at least 10 assists in 51 of his 72 games with the Kings last season, including two games where he finished with 20 – both of those against the Charlotte Hornets. He’s going to a Bulls club that went 42-40 last season under then-rookie coach Fred Hoiberg as Chicago missed the playoffs for the first time in eight seasons.

AKRON, Ohio – Dustin Johnson sailed off to the Bahamas for a private celebration of winning his first major championship at the U.S. Open.

He came roaring back at the Bridgestone Invitational.

In the toughest conditions at Firestone in nearly a decade, Johnson made it look easy Sunday when he closed with a 4-un-

der 66 and rallied from a threeshot deficit against the world’s No. 1 player to win another World Golf Championship.

He needed some help from Jason Day, who collapsed on the back nine. Johnson did his part, making a tough par save on the 15th hole when he got in range and pouring in a 15-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole that made a bogey at the end meaningless.

Two starts, two victories, and now No. 2 in the world.

“It’s the first time I’ve won two tournaments in a row. I mean, that’s big,” Johnson said after his one-shot victory over Scott Piercy.

“I’m excited and looking forward to going over to the British with the golf game in good form.”

He looks like the player to beat at Royal Troon with a frightening combination of driving, wedges and – finally – getting some putts to fall.

Dear Reader: There are several types of weight-loss surgery (also called “bariatric surgery”). They work in various ways.

They shrink the size of the stomach: The stomach gets full more easily. They reduce the absorption of calories and nutrients in the intestine. Some types of bariatric surgery also lead to hormone changes that reduce appetite and burn energy more efficiently.

One procedure is called gastric banding, or “Lap-Band.” Gastric banding involves placing an adjustable band around the stomach to make it smaller. This restricts the amount of food you can eat and makes you feel full faster. The band can be tightened or loosened as needed, depending on how quickly you are losing weight. This surgery is done laparoscopically, through small incisions, using smaller instruments.

Another common weight-loss surgery is known as gastric bypass, which shrinks the size of your stomach. It also reconfigures your small intestine so food bypasses most of your stomach and the upper part of your small intestine. As a result, your body absorbs fewer calories. Gastric bypass can be done through open surgery or laparoscopically. Weight-loss surgery can dramatically: • Reduce blood sugar levels • Lower blood pressure and cholesterol • Improve sleep apnea • Improve heart function • Reduce symptoms of acid reflux (GERD) • Reduce urinary stress incontinence But it’s not for people who need to lose just a few pounds. Dear Abby: My wife and I have a good marriage and two well-behaved kids who are good students and active in our community. Our 8-year-old son is very much the rule follower in school and outside activities, but cheats when playing board or card games with me or his sister at home. When I catch him doing it, I end the game and tell him I won’t play with him if he’s going to cheat. My wife believes the cheating is “just for fun” and I’m being too hard on him. I say the lesson I’m teaching him is that cheating is wrong. We agree we are fortunate this happens only at home, but I’m concerned if it is left unchecked, it will be regarded as permissible and it will escalate to become a problem in other circumstances. Otherwise, North should bid two clubs, planning to jump in hearts on the next round to show a game-force with exactly three-card heart support.

South should see a potential loser in each suit. Maybe the trump finesse will work, but if he takes it immediately and it loses, another diamond would require declarer’s establishing a club winner in the dummy for a spade discard.

However, perhaps West has the spade king. Then dummy’s queen can become a winner. South should hope that West has one of the major-suit kings. At trick two, declarer plays a spade to his ace, then leads his second spade. Here, West wins with the king and plays another diamond, but South takes that trick on the board and pitches his last diamond or the club jack on the spade queen. Then he can try the trump finesse for a possible overtrick.
