We don’t often express our opinion on the front page of the newspaper.

Today, we make a rare exception. And for good reason.

Under the large, bold headline, “Enough!”, we published the photos of House Speaker Michael Madigan, Senate President John Cullerton and Gov. Bruce Rauner, along with this secondary headline: “The Herald-News joins newspapers from across Illinois in demanding a balanced budget be approved for fiscal 2017.”

On today’s Opinion page (17), we publish an editorial written by the Editorial Board of the State Journal-Register in Springfield calling for Rauner, Madigan and Cullerton to stop the madness and work together to adopt a balanced state budget. The editorial is being published Wednesday by more than 60 newspapers throughout the state, and on the front pages of many of them.

Angie Muhs, executive editor of the State Journal-Register, reached out to fellow newspapers last week through the board of the Illinois Associated Press Managing Editors and the Illinois Press Association, suggesting newspapers join forces to deliver this important message to Rauner and our elected state representatives.

We were happy to oblige.

The Herald-News has written numerous editorials on this subject since last July 1, when the state entered fiscal 2016 without a budget. The damage since then – to small businesses owed hundreds of millions of dollars by the state, to social

service agencies (some of which have had to close their doors), to schools and health care providers – has touched just about every community in the state, including here in Will and Grundy counties.

We are just two days away from entering another fiscal year without a budget.

We can’t allow our elected officials to do this to Illinois for another year.

Library hires search firm to find new director “We’re looking forward to a new director, but the interim directors are doing a stellar job.”

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet Public Library board has hired a search firm to help find a new director.

The board will meet Thursday with consultant John Keister to discuss the type of candidate it wants to hire.

Board President Lynn Poper Samalea said they expect to hire a new library director before the end of the year.

“We’re being optimistic for fall,” Samalea said Tuesday. “We’re moving as fast as we can. But we want the right candidate. We don’t want to rush it.”

Keister heads John Keister & Associates, a search firm based in Vernon Hills that specializes in recruiting library and technology executives.

The board meeting will be 1 p.m. in the library branch at 3395 Black Road.

LEARNING TO COPE AT CAMP Children receive grief counseling at Joliet Area Community Hospice day camp

mmallory@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Gabby Olson and Macy Sullivan, both 12, sat Tuesday morning with other day campers in a classroom at Ira Jones Middle School in Plainfield.

“I want you to think about a feeling that’s really difficult about grief,” Joliet Area Community Hospice bereavement counselor Julie Blackburn said to the group of 7- to 13-year-olds.

They pounded and pushed their pentup emotions into clay, creating enough noise for it to be heard down the hallway. Then they each formed their own ball out of clay and walked outside together. They lined up facing the school’s brick exterior.

“We’re going to take that emotion and release it,” Blackburn said to the kids. “We’re going to throw it into the wall, one at a time.”

Each child took a turn, yelling out the emotion that has burdened them most

before launching the clay into the wall.

“Stress,” Olson shouted before her clay ball made a solid thud against the wall.

This was Blackburn’s favorite activity so far of the weeklong Journey Children’s Day Camp, hosted by Joliet Area Community Hospice. The organization partners with Plainfield District 202 and the C.W. Avery Family YMCA for facilities, which are next to each other on Wallin Drive.

The camp is not like other summer day camps, such as the one the YMCA was hosting at the same time. These children spend the week learning coping skills that, if continued, can help them the rest of their lives.

“Every child here has experienced a loss in life,” Blackburn said, “such as a family member or close friend.”

For Olson, it was her mother. She chose to throw out her stress for a reason.

“Since my mom died, there’s been a lot of stress on me,” Olson said. “She

passed away three years ago.”

The clay-throwing exercise allows kids to be loud with their emotions in a safe, nonjudgmental environment.

Blackburn said the kids use energy to confront their emotions.

“People say don’t feel or act a certain way,” she said. “Here, they pound, squeeze or tear the clay apart without being stopped.”

Activities throughout the week are inspired by the 2015 Disney film “Inside Out.” Grief counselor Kathy Cherven said the group started Monday by watching the film and discussing how main character Riley dealt with emotions when her world was turned inside out.

The day camp alternated between the serious processing of emotions and acting them out during playtime activities.

“Grief is a period of adjustment,” Cherven said. “Things change, from one emotion to another. All emotions are accepted here.”

At the end of the week, each partic-

ipant will take home his or her own version of the book “My Many Colored Days” by Dr. Seuss. The kids put markers to paper and made correlations between colors and their emotions. But not everyone associated the same colors with the same emotions.

“For one child, red means love,” Blackburn said. “For another, red is anger. It’s up to them.”

When Sullivan threw her ball of clay, she thought of the anger she’s felt since her brother died three months ago. Although she plans to continue doing the clay exercise, she didn’t immediately feel the emotion slip away Tuesday.

“I threw it as hard as I could,” Sullivan said. “I’m competitive in just about everything.”

Throughout the week, the group has plans to swim at the YMCA, touch small reptiles, pet therapy dogs, learn fire safety from the Joliet and Plainfield fire agencies, and learn ambulance safety from Daly Ambulance. This is the 13th year of the camp.

Dire scenarios for second year without budget

The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – If Illinois enters a second year without a budget this week, cash will stop flowing to local 911 centers, preventive health screenings and tuition grants for low-income college students – and the situation will only get direr from there.

Not approving a new spending plan by the start of the new fiscal year on Friday means schools won’t know whether they’ll stay open through the academic year, the state could lose billions in federal dollars for various programs, and vendors that have provided services without payments could file more lawsuits.

Entering a second fiscal year without a budget is unprecedented, so officials will have no roadmap for all the harmful situations Illinois could face.

“We are so cash-strapped these days, we need every dollar we have going to pay the critical services to the state, not in legal fees,” Illinois Comptroller Leslie Munger said.

With the clock ticking, lawmakers are scheduled to be in Springfield on Wednesday to discuss a Democratic-backed plan to fund schools for another year and a partial budget that would get the state to January, but Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner has already said he disagrees with key pieces of their plan.

Rauner has proposed his own plan, but it is unlikely to be considered.

A full-year state budget will remain elusive because Rauner, a businessman elected in 2014, and Democratic leaders who have long controlled the General

Assembly are at odds over the governor’s demands for business-friendly, union-weakening laws as a condition for agreeing to a spending plan that would include a tax increase.

Here’s a look at what Illinois will face:

PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Public schools may have about a month before knowing whether they can open on time for the 2016-17 academic year. This includes Chicago Public Schools, with about 400,000 students.

Education funding is the only portion of the budget for the current year that Rauner approved, so schools have largely been spared the consequences of the impasse. But if lawmakers and the governor fail to approve a new education budget soon, schools will be at risk of closing or will have to use rainy-day funds to open.

Not every district will have enough money reserves to open, and even the ones that do may not be able to operate for a full year.

“Frankly, this may be the sort of crisis that does force the issue (to a resolution),” said David Yepsen, director of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale.

Illinois typically sends the first payment to schools on Aug. 10, Munger said. But she said there must be a budget at least a few days before then to make the payments on time.

LOCAL GOVERNMENTS

Lawmakers and the governor

agreed in December to release $3.1 billion in one-time funds for local governments that rely on the state for funding services such as 911 call centers and domestic violence shelters. But come Friday those payments will stop.

Without a budget, the state will be losing out on $5.4 billion in federal passthrough dollars for public health services, cancer screenings, and home-delivered meals for seniors, according to the comptroller’s office. The state will only get that money if lawmakers authorize spending.

Much of the spending for the current year has been on autopilot because of court orders for critical services such as Medicaid payments and state workers’ salaries. While that’s expected to continue, there’s some spending lawmakers approved during the budget standoff that will have to be reauthorized.

HIGHER EDUCATION

The status of cash-strapped public colleges and universities may depend on how fast they spent last year’s emergency funds.

The schools received short-term funding when Rauner and legislators approved $600 million in April. That included nearly $170 million in tuition grants for low-income students.

But that money was only a fraction of the normal higher education budget and it was meant as a lifeline for colleges and universities to make it to the fall. Without a budget, there won’t be any additional money.

Before getting the emergency money, higher education institutions had

been without funding since last July 1, prompting layoffs and, in the case of Chicago State University, the possibility of closing altogether. CSU was in such dire straits by the time the funding came through that it still laid off more than 300 employees.

MONEY OWED TO SOCIAL SERVICES

If there’s no spending authority, Munger said, the only recourse for social service agencies, utilities and other state vendors awaiting payment will be to sue the state. The state already faces one lawsuit demanding the immediate payment of $130 million to 82 service providers, including one run

by Diana Rauner, the governor’s wife.

Some social service agencies have received money this year because of the court orders against the state. But many others have been barely operating without state aid.

Last week the United Way of Illinois released a survey of 429 agencies that have contracts with the state that showed nearly two-thirds have had to cut programs because they haven’t been paid, affecting nearly 1 million people. These agencies provide a range of services, including mental health treatment, childhood education and substance abuse help.

If they go another six months without funding, more than half of the agencies say they’ll have to stop serving clients.

“This is just nonsense. We’re devastating the state for self-made reasons,” said Chicago Democratic Sen. Heather Steans, one of the lawmakers trying to negotiate a budget.

Will County Forest Preserve Police getting new chief

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET TOWNSHIP – The Will County Forest Preserve Police will see a leadership change this week. Longtime second-in-command Tracy Chapman will take over the department as Chief Robert Murphy retires.

“I’m talking with my 8-year-old daughter and I say, ‘It’s a big week for mom. I’ll be chief on Wednesday’ and Madison doesn’t cheer, she doesn’t say ‘Congratulations!’ She says, ‘What about Murph?’ ” Chapman said.

But Murphy, who has been with the Forest Preserve Police for 27 years – seven as chief – says he and the department will be fine.

“I’m 65 years old. It’s time. I’ve loved this job because we’ve been able to be successful at it and one of the best things I’ve done is keep the right people in place,” Murphy said. “Without Tracy, I wouldn’t have done half as good as I did.”

Before coming to the forest preserve, Murphy was a Joliet police officer for 10 years.

“It depressed me that by the end I was arresting the kids of the first guys

I arrested,” Murphy said.

Murphy said he’s proudest to be leaving the department without any open “crimes against person” cases.

“That’s not ‘administratively closed,’ that’s solved,” he emphasized.

Murphy believes his staff – 11 fulltime officers, 12 part-time officers and four civilians – have kept the preserves from getting an unsafe reputation.

“We’ve applied pressure to any unsavory element and they go someplace else where the cops aren’t going to show up,” he said.

Chapman said vandalism and trespassing remain problems, but drug use in the preserves has become a new focus for law enforcement.

“Luckily we’ve got some new guys who want to hit that hard. We’re getting a pretty big collection of [seized] pipes,” she said.

Forest preserve police officers supplement a low call volume with a large amount of training, Chapman said.

“We have the best-trained officers in Will County,” Murphy said. “Retention is always a problem, but when the guys go on to larger departments, they bring a binder full of certification.”

Two more theft charges were filed last week against John W. Pleta, of Tinley Park, after a fourth victim’s loss was verified by in- John W. Pleta vestigators to a grand jury, Mokena Police Chief Steve Vac-

On Dec. 23, Pleta was arrested by Mokena police after being accused of helping himself to more than $1 million of an elderly client’s trust fund.

Pleta has been a lawyer for 30 years and specialized in estate planning and wills. At the time of his arrest, he maintained an office on Bormet Drive.

“Three other victims have been discovered since his arrest where money was taken in the same fashion,” Vaccaro said Tuesday.

Pleta, 56, remains in Will County Hail.

The hospital plans to build a 13,800-square-foot outpatient surgery center on 4 acres. The center would have three operating rooms and is estimated to cost about $11 million, Colby said.

“We need more operating rooms in order to meet the demands of the community,” she said.

A hospital district allows for a medical office and some commercial use as well, Assistant Village Administrator Robin Ellis said.

However, Colby said, the hospital is currently only planning for the surgery center.

The hospital would be the owner of the new facility, but upon receiving approval from the state, it will look to open up ownership opportunities to its physicians, Colby said.

A few residents who live across from the hospital and adjacent to the property in question raised concerns at the meeting Monday about water drainage and the intended height for the new facility.

Zoning parameters allow for a medical building as tall as 135 feet, or about nine stories, while other buildings are limited to a height of 85 feet, Ellis said.

The hospital is six stories high.

One resident suggested that the village impose a one-story restriction for the structure. Mayor Tim Baldermann and Trustee David Smith said that as long as the developer follows the village’s zoning codes the village could not enforce any extra restrictions.

However, Colby said, the facility will only be one story.

The rezoning ordinance will likely come up for approval at the next board meeting.

Diesel compressor causes fire at D Construction in Coal City

COAL CITY – No injuries were reported when a diesel compressor caught fire Tuesday afternoon at D Construction at 1488 S. Broadway St. in Coal City.

Lt. Josh Edd said a diesel compressor caught fire and did $18,000 to $20,000 worth of damage to a storage container and a propane tank.

Coal City Fire Department personnel responded at 2:41 p.m. and put out the fire. They were on the scene for about a half an hour, Eddy said.

NEW LENOX – Silver Cross Hospital has started its process to build a new ambulatory surgery center across from the hospital with a rezoning request presented this week to the New Lenox Village Board and an application filed with the state.

An ordinance to rezone 58 acres of farmland on the west side of Silver Cross Boulevard just south of Route 6 for hospital use was presented for consideration to village trustees Monday night.

The hospital also needs to get approval from the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board as well as final site plan approvals from the village before it can move forward with construction.

It filed an application in May with the state board and a hearing is set for Aug. 2, hospital Senior Vice President for Business Development Ruth Colby said.

Joliet offers lots of fireworks for the July Fourth weekend

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet becomes a two fireworks town again this weekend – actually three if you count the post-game festivities at Silver Cross Field.

Fireworks will return to Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park for the first Independence Day holiday since 2011.

Fireworks will be at the park at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, topping off an event that begins at 6 p.m. and includes live bands, food vendors and kids’ games.

On the same night, the Joliet Slammers are shooting off fireworks after their game at Silver Cross Field, not far from the park on the other side of the Des Plaines River.

“If we time it right, we’ll have fireworks in stereo,” said Deanna Opsahl, office assistant at Bicentennial Park.

Then on Monday, July 4, the traditional fireworks show will be held at Memorial Stadium.

Mary Jaworski, a member of the Joliet July 4th Celebration Committee that raises money and organizes the stadium fireworks, noted that the

event is in its 70th year.

“This started in 1946,” she said. “To keep something alive with fundraising for that long is pretty incredible.”

The fireworks in Bicentennial Park had been held for several years on July 3 before the show ended after 2011 amid city budget cuts.

The return show this year was originally scheduled for July 3, which would have been Sunday.

“But we thought about it and said, ‘Let’s take advantage of the Saturday,’” Opsahl said. “People who are downtown at the restaurants can come out and see the fireworks.”

Opsahl advised people to bring blankets or chairs for lawn seating. The fireworks will last 20 minutes.

The event begins at 6 p.m. Two bands will play at the park pavilion.

Hot Mess plays from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Junkyard Dawgs play from 8 to 10:30 p.m.

Five food vendors will be at the event.

Major sponsors are the Will-Joliet Bicentennial Park Inc. Board, which does fundraising for the park, and the city of Joliet, which is providing police security.

Joliet rapper dies after being shot in the back in Chicago

aschier@shawmedia.com CHICAGO – A Joliet man and aspiring rapper was shot to death over the weekend in Chicago.

Brandon J. Nolls, 24, of the 1100 block of South Summit Street in Joliet, was pronounced dead at 10:38 p.m.

Friday at Mount Sinai Hospital in Chicago, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office. The cause and manner of death was determined to be a homicidal gunshot wound to

the back.

Chicago Police Department Officer Thomas Sweeney said law enforcement responded about 9 p.m. Friday to the 1000 block of North Harding Avenue, where they found Nolls, who had been shot in the back and shoulder, and transported him to Sinai.

Nolls also went by the names Skoonie and PG12.

Sweeney said detectives are investigating Nolls’ death, but no one is in custody in connection with the shooting.

ROMEOVILLE – If you’re leading up to Independence Day with a bang, expect the police to notice.

“We’ve always had a lot of [people setting off] fireworks; most towns do,” Romeoville Police Chief Mark Turvey said. “I think every year this is what I get the most phone calls from residents about, so we’re trying to be more proactive this year.”

Extra officers were added to “fireworks patrol” on village streets this week. Last year, police got 44 fireworks complaints on July 4 and a small girl was injured when a bottle rocket exploded by the door where she was standing and sent pieces of glass into her eye, Turvey said. In 2002, a 50-year-old man was killed while lighting rockets off a lawn chair in the 100 block of North Independence Boulevard.

10 Lawsuit: Teen’s prank led to financial loss

aschier@shawmedia.com SHOREWOOD – A Joliet-area State Farm insurance agent has filed a lawsuit against another agent in his company, alleging that repeated pranking by the other agent’s son hurt his health and his pocketbook.

However, the civil action may be short-lived.

John D. Wright filed a lawsuit June 23 against fellow insurance agent Rick Papp, as well as Papp’s 14-year-old son and the boy’s mother, after the teen rang Wright’s doorbell and ran away, the lawsuit states. As a result, Wright lost more than $50,000 and his emotional health was damaged, according to the lawsuit.

But Wright said Tuesday that he expects the lawsuit will be dropped by the week’s end with no money exchanged, describing the situation as “something between two neighbors.”

A voicemail left with his attorney, Lisa Kinser, on Tuesday was not immediately returned. A receptionist with Papp’s office said he had no comment.

Wright was the repeated victim of “ding, dong, ditch,” the lawsuit states, a prank in which a person would ring Wright’s doorbell in the 21000 block of South Kenmare Drive in Shorewood and leave the door before Wright answered it. The lawsuit is not clear as to when

the pranking occurred. The Papps also live in Shorewood, in the 21100 block of South Lakewoods Lane.

Wright contacted the police and eventually the boy admitted to committing the prank in one instance after the village’s 10 p.m. curfew, according to the lawsuit.

“As a result of the minor’s actions, [Wright] suffered severe emotional distress, severe anxiety, sleeplessness, extreme and rapid weight loss, and required treatment medication in order to function in his daily living,” the lawsuit states.

He also lost more than $30,000 in income and failed to earn a work incentive due to the prank, according to the lawsuit.

The lawsuit claims the teen knew Wright lived at the home he pranked and that he chose it because Wright was a State Farm agent like his father. The lawsuit also states the Papps had a duty to control their son in preventing him from intentionally harming others and references the Parental Responsibility Law. Included in the lawsuit are counts of intentional infliction of emotional distress and parental liability. Each count seeks more than $50,000. The emotional distress count also seeks punitive damages, while the liability count seeks attorney fees and court costs.

William Steve Johnson Jr., affectionately known as “Bill,” was born on Sept. 29, 1930, to William Sr. and Charity Johnson. He departed this life on Wednesday, June 22, 2016, at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox.

He attended school in Jackson, Tennessee, and also graduated from high school.

William Jr. served in the U.S. Army (Korean War) and was honorably discharged. He moved to Joliet in the 1950s. He worked as a forklift driver for General Motors Corp. and retired after 27 years of dedicated service. He enjoyed fishing and being outdoors. He also enjoyed family gatherings.

William Jr. is preceded in death by his father, William S. Johnson Sr.; his mother, Charity Johnson; one brother, James Johnson; sisters, Ruby Baker, Louise Stewart and Heartess Moore. William Jr. leaves to cherish his memory; his wife, Minnie Johnson; brother, Jimmie Johnson; one sister-in-law, Sallie Johnson; stepchildren, Jackie (Jerry) Robinson, Barbara (James) Lewis, Patricia Hayes, Don Mayberry and Dorothy Waits; a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Samio,s were involved in the grocery business in Elgin and Joliet. Long days were no stranger to him, and he would go home only when the job was done.

John was one of the original partners of Town and Country Lanes, which opened in Joliet in 1958. He eventually became sole proprietor and had been working side by side with his son, George, since 1976 in the operation of the bowling alley. He was known by his staff and customers as a hardworking man who led by example and was always appreciative of all customers, past and present. He always felt as if they were family.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Pat Summitt put women’s basketball on her back, breaking down barriers with her indomitable spirit and demanding respect for female athletes on her way to becoming the winningest coach in Division I college basketball his- Pat Summitt tory.

The woman who lifted the sport to national prominence staring down players and officials with her icy glare will be remembered for far more than the impressive numbers she piled up over 38 seasons, includ-

Tennessee – the only school she coached – won NCAA titles in 1987,

1989, 1991, 1996-98 and 2007-08. Summitt had a career record of 1,098-208 in 38 seasons, plus 18 NCAA Final Four appearances.

Former Lady Vols forward Candace Parker said Summitt’s impact went way beyond Knoxville.

“She’s changed the way women’s basketball is played,” Parker said.

“She’s changed the nature of women’s basketball.”

Summitt announced in 2011 at age 59 that she’d been diagnosed with early onset dementia. She coached one more season before stepping down. At her retirement, Summitt’s eight national titles ranked behind the 10 won by former UCLA men’s coach John Wooden. UConn coach Geno Auriemma passed Summitt after she retired.

Charlotte was born on March 3, 1910, on the farm homestead in Will County, a daughter to Nicholas Sr. and Catherine Drauden Eich. She married Harold F. McHugh on Sept. 17, 1929, in Joliet. He preceded her in death in 1982.

Surviving is a son, Donald (Mary-Margaret) McHugh of Normal; a daughter, Gail Antonoplos of West Fargo, ND; six grandchildren, David (Courtney) McHugh, Deirdre (Kent) Rinne, Lynn (Steve Catron) Antonoplos, Jayme Antonoplos, Mollie Antonoplos and Joe (Beth) Antonoplos; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son; two brothers; and a sister.

David N. Martis, a 77-year-old lifelong resident of Lockport, and former fire chief, passed away peacefully at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home. Dave was born into life on April 24, 1939, and entered eternal life on June 25, 2016.

Dave is survived by Judy (Rodeghiero) Martis, who was his high school sweetheart, best friend and wife of 55 years. He is also survived by his loving and devoted children, Greg (Michele), Jeff (Karen) and Dan (Jackie) Martis; his cherished grandchildren, Megan (fiancé Chris Meyer), Emily, Kyle, Molly, Hunter and Jackson Martis; his loving and treasured sister-in-law, Susan Rodeghiero; dear brother-in-law and sister-inlaw, Jerry and Sandy Rodeghiero; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Dave is preceded in death by his parents, George and Louise Martis; and sister, Doris Kucer.

He was hired in 1962 by the Lockport Township Fire District and retired after 31 years of service, with the last six years as fire chief. He also served as a district fire trustee for 18 years capping off 49 years of dedication to the fire service and was a charter member of Lockport Firefighters Local 1544. Dave served in the U.S. Army Company E First Brigade 16th U.S. Infantry.

He was a member of St. Dennis Catholic Church in Lockport, the Lockport Moose Lodge 1557 and American Legion John Olson Post 18.

Dave’s passion was hunting and fishing with his three sons, devoted Labrador retriever, Brandy, and lifelong friend, Ray Wittkofski. He also enjoyed traveling, camping and, most of all, cooking his famous recipes at the family

ESTHER B. RICHARDSON Esther B. Richardson (nee Bichara), age 83, passed away at 9:25 p.m. on June 26, 2016, in the presence of her loving family, and thus her 10-year battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (P.S.P.), a rare brain disorder has ended. There is no known cause, no known cure, and no effective treatment for P.S.P. (see CurePSP at psp.org).

Esther is the daughter of Emily (Panayotti), (a native of Bethlehem, Palestine) and Victor Bichara, (a native of Beirut, Lebanon). Esther is survived by her husband, Warren Vincent Richardson; their five children, Vanessa Meyer (Ralph), Shorewood, Paul (Dawn), Channahon, Dr. Emily Richardson-Whisman (Mark), Longmont, CO, Stephen (Maria), Joliet and Colette Varco (Tom), Johns Creek, GA; and their 12 grandchildren, Teresa and Ralphie Meyer, Grace Richardson, Hannah and Henry Whisman, Stephen Jr., Alton, Anna, Victor and Mia Richardson and Adam and Gina Varco. Also surviving are three sisters, Mother Margaret Mary of the Child Jesus, OCD, Prioress of Carmelite Convent, Naga City, Philippines, Mrs. Emily Borgaily, Davao City, Philippines, and Mrs. Julia O’Mahony, Jacksonville, Florida; and four brothers, all in the Philippines, Benjamin, Miguel, Victor Jr., and Alexander Bichara. She is also survived by six sisters-in-law and four brothers-in-law, in addition to numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents; her mother in-law and father in-law; three brothers, Alfredo, Alfonso and Jaime Bichara; one sister, Mrs. Susana Borgaily; seven sisters in-law; and six brothers-in-law.

Esther and Warren Vincent Richardson were married at Paules (St. Vincent DePaul) Roman Catholic Church in Manila, Philippines, on May 4, 1957. They met while Esther was attending St. Scholastica College in Manila (majoring in music and liberal arts) and he was serving in the U.S. Navy at Sangley Point Naval Station, located across Manila Bay from the city.

Esther and her husband arrived in Ludlow (Esther’s first time ever in the USA), in time for Christmas 1957. She was immediately welcomed with open arms by her in-laws, including the parents of her husband as well as by his nine siblings, their spouses and the many nieces and nephews. Esther remained with her parents in-law for a month while her husband returned to California to obtain his honorable discharge from the Navy after five years of service. The young couple remained with his parents three more months while he searched for employment.

This four-month period provided opportunities for which Esther, true to her character, took advantage of. She learned to cope with cold, harsh Midwest winter weather, she formed a very loving relationship with her in-laws, especially with her mother-in-law, who “took her under her wing” and helped Esther adapt to American

culture. Esther, never one to waste an opportunity, was always present to help, to observe and to ask questions. The relationship she formed with her mother in-law was due in large part to Esther’s ability to ask questions and converse in a way that showed genuine interest in the person and make that person feel that Esther cared. Esther treated people in this manner and made many friends during her lifetime.

Esther gave birth to and nurtured five children in the next seven years, while her husband worked and attended the University of Illinois.

After his graduation, the family moved to the Quad Cities area and subsequently became members of St. John Vianny Catholic Church, a church they helped build in the new parish established in Bettendorf, Iowa, where they lived. Esther promptly became active in this new parish. She volunteered to teach CCD to children of the new parish, she worked in fund drives, she hosted luncheons in her home for the parish priest.

When the youngest of the children started kindergarten, Esther enrolled in night school at Marycrest College, Davenport, Iowa. After completing the required courses and the required student teaching for the elementary education curriculum, Esther received her bachelor’s degree. When the family moved to Joliet a few months later, Esther began substitute-teaching in the Joliet grade school district and continued for several years. This move provided Esther new opportunities to use her innate drive for practicing her Christian beliefs taught by Jesus.

The family immediately joined Holy Family Catholic Church, where she was very active in the church for 16 years. She was chosen an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Eucharist. She was a member of the bingo committee as well assisting with the annual ham dinner fund-raiser. She hosted luncheons in her home for the parish priests, and invited them and sometimes their close relatives to family Christmas dinners or other celebrations, because, as she stated on many occasions, “priests are very lonely on holidays and other celebrations.”

She became a very active volunteer for Joliet Area Community Hospice in its relative infancy, and served for 10 years. She served as a member of the bereavement group, wherein she made regular visits and consoled the several patients and their families assigned to her. Many of these patients had no close family members or other relatives to visit them. She also devised a computer system for recording and reporting hours served by the many volunteers. She recorded these hours and prepared reports so the hospice organization could submit the reports and be granted financial assistance from government agencies.

Later on after the family moved to Shorewood, and some of the children went away to college, she volunteered with Crisis-Line.

She consoled the many people on the phone who called in with psychological or practical problems and advised them or referred them to other agencies where they could obtain additional assistance.

Meanwhile the family joined Saint Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, it being closer to

their Shorewood home, and have remained there for 28 years. This move provided new opportunities for Esther to expand the practice of her religion for the love of God and service to Him and His people. Among the many services to the parish, Esther lectured and taught in the R.C.I.A. program for new converts, joined the Liturgy committee and hosted their annual post-Christmas dinner-party in her home for eight consecutive years; as seamstress she sewed and embroidered all the altar decorations; she assisted and supervised decorating the altar for special Holy Days; she volunteered and was appointed Sacristan and served for 14 years; she performed the “holy wash”, i.e., she laundered by hand, the purificators and other altar linens at least three times weekly; she laundered priests Albs, vestments, 50 new altar-server gowns and then those needing washing weekly. She opened the church for daily morning Mass and prepared the altar for the priest.

While growing up in the Philippines, Esther, along with her parents and her 11 siblings experienced many hardships. They survived the Japanese occupation and the many atrocities during World War II. Sometimes they had very little to eat. They had no simple things such as toothbrushes and toothpaste. Instead, they used twigs from trees and salt to brush their teeth. But these hardships and sufferings served to strengthen their resolve and their religious beliefs and trust in God. They never wavered and they never doubted God. They believed in the end He would protect them and they would persevere. They prayed and always believed in the power of prayer.

Esther used that toughness, strength and belief in God throughout her life to help her cope with so many difficult situations, such as those inherent in nurturing and raising her children, while being so far away from her own family. Because she had several small children she was not able to return to the Philippines to visit her family when her father died, nor even to return before a total of 16 years. Esther never complained while suffering the excruciating pain and ravages of her body caused by the P.S.P. disorder. Instead she prayed and offered her suffering up to God. Many times Esther was asked how she was able to accomplish so many tasks while raising five children and taking care of her family and home, which in addition to those mentioned above, included such tasks as painting the fence, painting and decorating the basement for the grandchildren, wallpapering four bedrooms, painting the kitchen and many, many more. Her answer was simply: “I just did it!”

If asked why she worked so hard performing all the work at church and why she didn’t ask for help or get someone as a replacement, her answer was always: “I do it for JESUS!” For recreation Esther eventually developed an interest in golfing and in bowling. She also enjoyed card games with the ladies. Some influence of her spouse led her to even become a lukewarm fan of the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears. But Esther delighted in and experienced the greatest joy when she had children around,

Republicans and Senate Democrats on Tuesday filed rival spending proposals for the fiscal year that begins Friday. They include at least one area of agreement: spending $1 billion for higher education, including $151 million to pay for grants to help college students pay tuition for spring semester 2016.

Madelyn J. Stanfield (nee Barnes), age 95, of Joliet, passed away peacefully, Saturday, June 25, 2016, at Brookdale of Joliet.

Born Oct. 12, 1920, in Washburn, she was the daughter of William Henry and Anna May (Moulton) Barnes, and was a graduate of Washburn High School. She married Donald T. Stanfield on Aug. 20, 1938, in Washburn, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 22, 2001.

Madelyn was a devoted wife and mother and a loving and caring grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother.

She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, the seniors group of the church and The King’s Daughters.

CHICAGO – Gov. Bruce Rauner and majority Democrats were pushing competing plans to ensure schools stay open and government operations continue, although there were signs late Tuesday that the two sides could reach a deal on stopgap spending as Illinois approaches a second year without a full state budget.

Legislative leaders left a nearly three-hour meeting with the Republican governor saying they had made progress and would meet again Wednesday morning.

None would reveal details of their discussions, but Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan said he was “optimistic that we can settle a whole host of problems,” and Senate President John Cullerton told reporters it’s “exciting that we’re this close.”

Republican House leader Jim Durkin and Senate leader Christine Radogno agreed it was a good discussion, though Radogno said, “Caution is always in order.”

Rauner’s office had no comment.

The major sticking point for lawmakers returning to Springfield on Wednesday has been how much to increase money for education, and in particular for the financially struggling Chicago Public Schools. Dem-

NATION & WORLD BRIEFS Fla. confirms Zika-related box cars to erupt in flames and led authorities to evacuate case of microcephaly TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida confirmed its first Zika-related case of microcephaly, in a child whose mother contracted the virus in Haiti, officials said Tuesday.

In a statement, Republican Gov. Rick Scott called the diagnosis “heartbreaking” and asked federal health experts to talk with Florida medical professionals about what precautions pregnant women should take.

The mother is a Haitian citizen who came to Florida to give birth, and the family would be connected with a state program for infants and toddlers with developmental delays, according to a statement from Florida’s Department of Health.

The extent of Haiti’s Zika outbreak is unknown because of the country’s lack of routine data collection systems. Its health ministry hasn’t reported any Zika-related microcephaly cases, although it has reported about a dozen suspected cases of the neurological disorder Guillain-Barre, including two definitively linked to Zika by lab tests.

3 missing, 1 injured in train collision in Texas

DALLAS – Three crew members were missing and one was hurt Tuesday after a head-on train collision in the Texas Panhandle that caused several

residents in the area.

The two BNSF Railway freight trains were on the same track when they collided near the town of Panhandle, about 25 miles northeast of Amarillo.

Each train carried two crew members; one man jumped before the collision, BNSF spokesman Joe Faust said.

That man was in stable condition at an Amarillo hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, said Sgt. Dan Buesing of the Texas Department of Public Safety. His identity wasn’t available.

Benghazi panel caps 2-year investigation Committee finds no ‘smoking gun’ pointing to Clinton

WASHINGTON – House Republicans on Tuesday concluded their $7 million, two-year investigation into the deadly attacks in Benghazi, Libya, with fresh accusations of lethal mistakes by the Obama administration but no “smoking gun” pointing to wrongdoing by Hillary Clinton, then secretary of state and now the Democrats’ presumptive presidential nominee.

After the long investigation, filled with partisan sniping by panel members, none of the new revelations highlighted by the House Benghazi committee in its 800-page report pointed specifically to Clinton’s actions before, during or after the Sept. 11, 2012, attacks on the U.S. diplomatic outpost and CIA annex in the eastern Libyan city.

Four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens, died in the attacks. Allegations against Clinton were a main impetus behind the House Republicans’ creation of the politically charged, Watergate-style select committee.

Clinton testified before the panel for nearly 11 hours last fall.

While the panel’s GOP members took shots at Clinton on Tuesday, Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., the chairman, summed up the document by asking “the American people to read this report for themselves, look at the evidence we have collected and reach their own conclusions.”

In Denver, Clinton dismissed the report as an echo of previous probes with no new discoveries. “I think it’s pretty clear it’s time to move on,” she said during a campaign stop.

Hardly – especially in the heat of an election. Republican rival Donald Trump, although silent on the subject Tuesday, has frequently lashed out at Clinton over Benghazi.

Nearly four years ago, the Libya attacks became immediate political fodder, given their timing in the weeks before President Barack Obama’s re-election, and that has not abated despite seven previous congressional investigations.

There has been finger-pointing on both sides over security at the U.S. diplomatic outpost in Benghazi and whether Clinton and the White House initially tried to portray the assault as a protest over an offensive, anti-Muslim video, instead of a calculated terrorist attack.

Republican insistence that the investigation was not politically motivated was undermined last year when House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., suggested that the committee could take credit for Clinton’s then-slumping poll numbers.

His statements helped dash his chances of becoming House Speaker.

The committee interviewed more than 100 witnesses and reviewed some 75,000 pages of documents, but an almost accidental discovery by the

panel last year has shadowed Clinton’s candidacy. The committee disclosed that she had used a private email server to conduct government business while serving as secretary of state, a practice that has drawn widespread scrutiny, including an FBI investigation.

Already bitterly partisan, Tuesday’s release of the report exposed divisions within Republican ranks.

Reps. Mike Pompeo of Kansas and Jim Jordan of Ohio issued a separate report slamming Clinton and the Obama administration, with Pompeo telling reporters that the former first lady and senator was “morally reprehensible.” Clinton’s public comments casting the attack as a possible protest over the anti-Muslim video differed sharply from her private assessments to her daughter, Chelsea, and foreign diplomats, Jordan and Pompeo said.

Gowdy, however, deflected questions about her, saying the report “is not about one person.”

The GOP report severely criticizes the military, CIA and administration officials for their response as the attacks unfolded, and their subsequent explanations to the American people.

STOP THE MADNESS!

State leaders must end Illinois’ budget impasse Illinois’ budget standoff must be resolved, and must be resolved now.

Whether or not our leaders manage to pass a stopgap funding measure this week, Illinois still needs the stability of a full budget to restore the health of our state and its economy.

For a year, our state’s elected leaders have engaged in what can only be called political malpractice.

Illinois is the only state in the country that doesn’t have a budget. For a year, because of that failure, it has stiffed small businesses, social service agencies and its higher education system, leaving them trying to operate without money they’re owed. State operations have been cobbled together through a patchwork of court orders, and the mounting backlog of money owed gets deeper by the minute.

On Monday, Gov. Bruce Rauner said the state was on the verge of crisis, and that it would be an “outrageous, tragic failure” if schools don’t open on time this fall.

With all due respect, Governor, the state is already in crisis and the budget standoff has already been an “outrageous, tragic failure.”

As legislators return to Springfield today – for the first time this month – Illinois’ historic, serious problems have been made even worse by the failure to compromise on a balanced, long-term spending plan.

The political war between Rauner and House Speaker Michael Madigan has been confounding and unconscionable. Rauner has insisted on passage of the so-called Turnaround Agenda, a series of pro-business measures, as a condition of the budget. Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton have seemed focused primarily on thwarting the governor.

Neither the governor nor the Legislature has put forth a balanced budget. Decades of delaying action and willfully ignoring issues such as the state’s epically ballooning pension obligations have devastated its financial stability. The state must make cuts, and yes, more revenue will be needed

to stanch the economic bleeding.

The consequences of having no budget have been harsh and far-reaching.

The state’s colleges and universities, which ought to be linchpins for growth and economic development, instead have been starved. Hundreds have been laid off, programs have been shuttered. High school graduates look at this mess, fear for their future, and enroll in out-of-state colleges. Our best and brightest may not come back after they complete their education elsewhere.

Meanwhile, more than 130,000

low-income students have had financial aid snatched away. Do these students who wish to better themselves and their future job prospects through education have other resources to continue? In most cases, no.

One million of Illinois’ most vulnerable people – the poor, the at-risk kids, the elderly, the mentally ill, the homeless, the victims of domestic abuse or sexual assault – have been directly harmed by the state’s dereliction of duty, as social service agencies cut services.

Hospitals and medical providers are owed hundreds of millions in unpaid state employee medical bills and delayed Medicaid payments.

Countless business owners, large and small, have struggled to survive because they haven’t been paid. Cities and small towns have been left holding the bag for unpaid state bills.

And yet, it could get even worse.

More than $2 billion in active road construction projects might be shut down, leading to as many as 25,000

workers losing their jobs.

The state’s corrections system says it’s on the verge of not being able to feed inmates and operate prisons.

Social services agencies will continue to turn away the ill, the homeless, the elderly.

The state’s schools were spared last year by a separate appropriation. But this year, many districts face the very real possibility of not opening or not being able to stay open.

But what have citizens seen from the Capitol? We have seen political posturing. We have seen a governor who campaigned as a practical business leader dedicated to finding fixes instead act as an ideological purist. We have seen their elected representatives apparently unable to stand up to Madigan, Cullerton and Rauner to demand a resolution to the crisis. We have not seen compromise.

Perhaps the most damaging longterm effect is the toxic cynicism and frustration this crisis has created among its residents, who have to wonder at this point whether Rauner, Madigan and Cullerton simply view the toll on Illinois’ people as mere collateral damage. At a recent Better Government Association panel on the impasse’s impact, multiple social service providers said flatly they don’t believe leaders care about their plight.

Many long-term changes are needed to restore Illinois to solid ground.

Redistricting reform is a critical piece of restoring true political competitiveness that will lead to legislators facing more accountability to the voters they represent.

A stopgap budget bill simply staves off emergency. It’s the bare minimum that needs to be done. Even if lawmakers pass one, they still have a long road toward developing a sensible plan for the state’s long-term survival.

But the day has come. Illinois’ people cannot be held hostage for a second year without a budget.

Voters must revolt and demand better.

“I met my wife when I was at Oregon State,” Bell said. “They discovered she had a brain tumor and she had surgery in 2012. She had been in remission, but in 2014 they found more. She was having chemo and radiation treatments last year. I played last year but didn’t play a whole season.

“I have Ashley here – and our puppy – and that has made it a lot better.

Plus, my parents are going to be here visiting us soon.”

Bell had been with the Washington Wild Things in the Frontier League last season but became available to the Slammers late in the summer.

“They put him on the scrap heap,” Isom said. “I always liked Carter. He would be playing third base and I’d be coaching third, and we talked. I always liked his bat and the way he played the game.

“His wife was sick, and that was playing on him. She’s healthy now, and that has helped him.”

“When you play third base, you always talk to coaches and people from the other team, and Jeff and I connected,” Bell said.

Bell was playing with South Bend in the Midwest League a few years ago. At the All-Star break, Carter and Ashley took a trip to Chicago to tour Wrigley Field. That resulted in Wrigley getting his name.

“I come from Vancouver Island, British Columbia,” he said. “I played in the ABL (Australian Baseball League).

That was cool. I was on the Perth team, and we went to South Korea and played in the Asia Series. I played on a Junior National team that went to Mexico and played all through the States. In college, I played with the Canada National

Team and we went to Tokyo.”

He also played with the Langley Blaze in the British Columbia Premier Baseball League and at Oregon State.

He was drafted in the 22nd round out of high school in 2008 by the San Francisco Giants and in the 29th round out of Oregon State in 2011 by the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Like Lawrie, he is a professional

Bell and his teammates will miss Vazquez, but the recent acquisition of Denzel Richardson and Rock Shoulders could help fill the void.

“Nobody is in this league without hopes of getting picked up (by a major league organization),” Bell said. “But this a great team and great group of guys. This is one of my favorite seasons. In affiliated ball, you don’t always have the brotherhood you have here.”

Bell is perfectly fine with not playing shortstop, the position he manned for a majority of his baseball life. Nobody is moving Rodriguez off that spot.

“Alfredo is one of the best shortstops I have seen in a long time,” Bell said. “This is my first season playing second base and he helps me out a lot.

“Our team is very good defensively.

We have a Double-A defense out there.”

Combine that with the offense Bell and the rest of the lineup are supplying, and it’s no surprise the Slammers are winning, and having a blast doing it.

JOLIET – The Joliet Slammers announced Tuesday that outfielder Boo Vazquez has signed with the Kansas City Royals.

Vazquez has been instrumental in helping the Slammers move into first place in the Frontier League East Division and his contributions have provided him the chance to play in the Royals’ organization. This will be Vazquez’s first opportunity to play in a major league organization Vazquez not only made a name for himself in Joliet in the 38 games he has played with the Slammers, but his name is known across the Frontier League. He leads the Frontier League with 11 home runs and 39 RBIs.

In last weekend’s matchup with the Lake Erie Crushers, Vazquez hit a grand slam home run in back-toback games. He hit three homers and drove in 10 runs in those two games alone. He leaves the Frontier League batting .324 in 2016 and with a career Frontier League average of .306.

The 23-year-old right fielder is from Youngstown, Ohio and attended the University of Pittsburgh, where he played collegiately.

Vazquez joined the Lake Erie Crushers out of college. He played in 41 games for the Crushers in 2015 and has since surpassed all major stats from last season. Vazquez’s 11 home runs are six more than he had last year with the Crushers, and his 39 RBIs are 12 more than last year. He also has the

Ort thrilled to receive league honors

cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Whenever a player is a relative newcomer to professional baseball, any sort of positive attention that comes his way is a big deal.

So for a pitcher from a small college with just seven games under his belt to be recognized as one of their league’s players of the week, it obviously opens many people’s eyes.

That is just what happened for Joliet Slammers righthander Kaleb Ort last week, and the native of Lowell, Michigan, realizes this is a special honor that few others in his position receive this early in their career.

On June 21, Ort got the good news that he was selected as the Frontier League’s Pitcher of the Week after going 2-0 with victories over Schaumburg and Washington.

In those two games, he allowed only one run and six hits in 13 innings while striking out 12 and walking four batters. While he allowed three hits in both contests, his June 19 outing in a home game against Schuamburg was arguably his best start yet, since he allowed no earned runs and struck out nine in six innings.

Ort had another quality performance in his last start, but wound up getting no decision. In last Sunday’s 3-2 home win over Lake Erie, he allowed two runs and four hits while striking out 13 and walking none in a seven-inning effort.

Slammers manager Jeff Isom was understandably very pleased with Ort’s performance.

“You’re going to win a lot of games if you pitch like that,” Isom said. “I was proud of Kaleb in that when you look at his line score, he had zero walks. He had a great fastball command, the best that I’ve seen from him, and his secondary pitches were there, as well. He continues to get better in every outing, and I hope that he can build off of this outing.”

So far, he’s gone 3-1 and owns a 4.50 ERA with a team-high eight starts. Ort has seen his ERA drop dramatically since the beginning of the month, when it stood at 8.40 after his fourth start. He’s allowed 32 hits and struck out 40 while walking 18 in 40 innings.

The current Slammers who have the most starts – Liam O’Sullivan, Spencer Medick, Sean Townsley and Ort – had a 5.14 ERA after their squad fell to 8-11 on June 2. But after Joliet won 15 of the last 20 games, those same four pitchers now own a combined ERA of 3.60.

“When one person does good, as a starter, we all just go out there and try to do the same thing, if not better, since it’s good camaraderie,” Ort said. “If I go out there and do my job, I know they have my back in the field and they definitely have my back at the plate.

“It was really nice to get that (Pitcher of the Week) and it’s mentally positive. It’s also great to see all of the hard work starting to pay off a little bit with all of the help from everyone on this club. This is definitely one of the best

teams that I’ve ever played for in my career. We all want the same thing and everyone’s out there doing their best.”

Ort played his college ball not far from his home town at Aquinas College, a small NAIA school in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he stood out as a pitcher and an outfielder. He graduated from there in December 2014.

Not many athletes make their way to the majors from small colleges such as Aquinas, but Ort knows that it can happen. In fact, a pair of former Cubs pitchers, Paul Assenmacher and Dave Gumpert, reached the big leagues after starting out their journeys at the same school.

While that’s still all a long way off for the 24-year-old pitcher, Ort is excited that he just has the opportunity

to continue his dream as a member of the Slammers.

“I definitely want to go as far as I can, so doing something like this every day is awesome,” Ort said. “Just coming out to the field every day as a job is amazing, and I couldn’t ask for a better job or place to come each day and a better group of guys to do it with. It’s an opportunity that very few get. This is just a step for all of us and hopefully we all go further.

“I like how everybody shows up every day. And whenever we’re here, we’re grinding and everyone is doing something to get better every single day. On and off the field we have fun together, too. It’s a great group and everyone gets along. It’s cool to be here.”

CREST HILL – Back in 1978, Joe Marshall Field, as it is known now, was nothing but a field, a fence and a backstop. Wooden pillars, overgrown with foliage, greeted fans coming in off Root Street.

New Crest Hill residents Joe and Donna Marshall had just moved into their home, across the street from the field. Joe, a full-time high school and college baseball umpire, was asked by a neighbor, whose 12-year old son played there, to help out. Help out, indeed.

“Next thing you know, I was a coach,” he said. “Next thing you know, I had my own team. Next thing you know, I was president of the league. Donna and I are both neat freaks and lived here, cleaning the place up and working on the field.”

The rest was history.

Now, Joe Marshall Field at Richland School is a multi-diamond complex with dugouts, stands along the first and third base lines, lights and a huge concession stand, and a press box. Crest Hill Pony League formed in 1982, and the league has grown to include multiple divisions – Pony (13-14-year-olds), Bronco (11-12), Mustang (9-10), Pinto (7-8) and Shetland (4-6).

“I wanted to give something back to the town I lived in,” Marshall said. “I wanted to provide a service to the kids of Crest Hill and the surrounding area.

And I could not have done any of it without Donna.”

Having celebrated their 42nd wedding anniversary earlier this month, the Marshalls are the reason Joe Marshall Field has been rated one of the best youth baseball facilities in Illinois. As far back as 1998, the Chicago Tribune presented the Marshalls an award proclaiming Joe Marshall Field the best youth baseball facility in the state.

“Donna and I lived here and worked very hard to make this field what it is,” Marshall said. “We raised our kids and then when our grandchildren came along, Donna forced me to retire from umpiring and become head groundskeeper in 2002. She did not want the grandkids in day care and to this day, she is their baby sitter and has done a great job raising them.

“I come over here every day at 5 o’clock in the morning and work until 11, and Donna helps me out from 6 until 8 and then goes and picks up our 3- and 5-year-old grandkids for the day. Everything I have accomplished, again, would not have been possible without her.”

Years ago, Marshall developed an idea, and the renewal of his season-ending event took place last weekend as

the DuPage River Conference All-Star games were played at Joe Marshall Field. The two 15-member all-conference teams were announced before the tournament championship game Saturday night. The North and South met in a doubleheader Sunday, also, of course, at Joe Marshall Field.

“I came up with the idea a number of years ago,” Marshall said. “I wanted to honor our kids for their hard work and determination of playing the game of baseball the right way. Before the championship game, we honor the 30 individual All-Stars by announcing their names and giving them plaques

in recognition of their all-conference standing.

“Most of these kids may not ever again in their lives be able to make an all-conference team in high school and beyond. Some won’t even be able to play high school baseball. I wanted to give them something that in 50 years, they can show their grandkids what they achieved when they were young. This is truly why I do what I do.”

Yes, another gift from a man – and his wife – who always wanted to give back to the kids of their town, Crest Hill, and the surrounding area.

This year, Joe and Donna Marshall received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Old Timers Baseball Association of Will County.

“Dan Bertino (chairman of the Old Timers Youth in Baseball committee) approached me about the award,” Marshall said. “They originally wanted me to make me Coach of the Year. I have been blessed to have won many awards honoring me. I told Dan that I would only accept the award if it honored both Donna and myself. I suggested to them to call it a Lifetime Achievement Award for Joe and Donna Marshall.”

River City rallies past Slammers SUBMITTED REPORTS

O’FALLON, Mo. – The Joliet Slammers hoped that their offense wouldn’t fall off too much after Boo Vazquez, the Frontier League leader in both home runs and RBI, signed with the Kansas City Royals organization on Monday.

But in its first game without the rightfielder, who had 11 homers and 39 RBI, the Slammers struggled to piece things together in their game at River City.

Although Joliet used three hits to take a 1-0 lead in the fourth in-

ning, the Rascals countered with a two-run seventh to move in front for good on Tuesday as they captured a 2-1 victory.

After the fourth inning, Joliet (23-19) only collect two more hits to finish with five against three Rascals pitchers. Tim Koons yielded all five hits and one earned run while striking out eight in 72/3 innings to collect the win. Zac Treece retired the side in the ninth to get the save.

Slammers starter Sean Townsley didn’t allow a run through six innings but took the loss after allowing two runs and five hits

while striking out seven in 62/3 innings.

In the fourth, Alfredo Rodriguez (2 for 3) led off with a single, Carter Bell (2 for 4) doubled and Marc Flores delivered an RBI single. They were the only three Slammers to get hits.

Three innings later, the Rascals (20-18) moved in front when Mike Jugella got a two-out single to drive in the tying and go-ahead runs.

Joliet remained in first place in the East Division by one game over Windy City, which fell, 5-2, at Evansville.

Dozier hits 2 HRs, Gibson shines as Twins blank Sox

CHICAGO – Brian Dozier homered twice and drove in four runs, Kyle Gibson pitched seven innings of five-hit ball for his first victory of the season, and the Minnesota Twins blanked the White Sox, 4-0, Tuesday night.

Dozier homered in his third straight game and extended his hitting streak to 10 games as the last-place Twins beat the Sox for first time in seven tries. Gibson (1-5) struck out seven and walked one in his best performance since coming off the disabled list this month.

Ryan Pressly and Brandon Kintzler each got three outs to finish the six-hitter for Minnesota’s first shutout of the season.

Dozier pulled both homers off Jose Quintana (5-8), a solo shot off a fastball in the second and a three-run drive off a curveball in the sixth for his third career multihomer game. Dozier’s 12th homer of the season drove in Eduardo Nunez, who had singled, and Joe Mauer, who walked.

It was the ninth straight game with an extra-base hit for Dozier, the longest streak for the franchise since it moved to Minnesota in 1961. Dozier added an infield single off Chris Beck in the eighth.

The Twins won for the fifth time in eight games and slowed a Sox team that thought it was on the upswing.

The Sox had won two straight series after a 10-26 stretch, but couldn’t solve Gibson. It was the

I have grown close with many of them over the years, and I can tell you they did it because they knew they could trust Ryan unconditionally, they believed what he was doing on the field was brilliant and innovative in its simplicity and brutality, and they felt it would make them great, and they all wanted exactly what Buddy wanted, to be the toughest guys on the block.

Could Ryan have forged a better relationship with Ditka? Sure. Would it have been better for the Bears? I don’t see how.

While history will argue that group’s failure to win more than one Super Bowl was a galactic disappointment – and really, who can disagree – I will argue that the 1985 Bears were the greatest team of the NFL’s modern era over a single season.

To belittle Ditka’s impact is truly a fool’s errand, but even Mike now will tell you he couldn’t have done it without Buddy.

Ryan did everything right as a Bear and it got him a great head-coaching job. How would a different relationship with Ditka have helped?

It was once he left that his faults began to block his path.

Steve McMichael will tell you it was Ryan’s departure that kept the Bears from multiple rings, but I will beg to differ strongly.

It was a gaggle of quarterbacks and some of the exact same faults Ryan and Ditka shared that kept the Bears from winning again.

It is interesting to me that so many Bears fans are unaware Ryan was almost as beloved in Philadelphia as he was in Chicago, and the defense he put together there with Reggie White, Jerome Brown, Clyde Simmons, Seth Joyner and Eric Allen was almost in the Bears league.

But without Ditka to play the yin to Ryan’s yang and deflect the bulk of the spotlight, Ryan’s brashness – and yes, his arrogance – was a principal component in the roadblocks to the top he was unable to get past.

Moments such as the “Body Bag” game against Washington and allegations from Cowboys’ placekicker Luis Zendejas of a Ryan-sponsored bounty on his head decades before “Bountygate” emerged.

As a Bears assistant, Ryan was perceived as a fun-loving, silent assassin, for the most part behind the scenes.

With the Eagles, he was the voice of arrogance painting bull’s-eyes on his players’ backs wherever they went.

Ryan’s race to the locker room without shaking Ditka’s hand after the Bears’ 20-12 playoff victory in the “Fog Bowl” on New Year’s Eve 1988 was easy to understand and accept by his former Bears players, and I’ll bet even Ditka himself.

But it was, and is to this day, very unprofessional head-coaching behavior for the National Football League and exposed a flaw that would mark him forever as one of the great coordinators of all time, but something less than head-coach material.

It had to grate on Ryan terribly being fired in Philadelphia after a 10-6 record with the No. 1-ranked defense in the league.

So much so that when he arrived in Houston in 1993 for his one season there as the defensive coordinator, ironically under head coach Jack Pardee whose departure from the Bears in ’77 opened the doors for the entire Buddy Ryan saga, he still believed he had all the answers.

Gilbride over his run-and-shoot offense that Ryan publicly labeled the “Chuck and Duck,” Buddy threw the punch seen around the NFL in the final regular-season game of the year and his self-destruction was complete.

Yes, he parlayed that moment into two years as the Cardinals’ head coach in 1994 and ’95, but his 12-20 record signaled the end of his coaching career.

In almost 40 years around the league, Ryan was one of the most complicated guys I ever worked with.

He was a truly good guy, maybe even a great one whose legacy will be one most of us would kill for, the love and total devotion of most of the guys who ever worked for him.

I think he’d like this, too.

Buddy Ryan was a guy who always believed it was more important to do it his way than the “right” way. The first words that come to mind for me when someone mentions Buddy Ryan are beloved, tough, brilliant, innovative, arrogant and self-destructive.

Believe it or not, I was actually just a kid on the beat once and Buddy Ryan was the new defensive coordinator of the Bears.

I got my start at Pro Football Weekly in 1977, the final year of the Jack Pardee regime with the Bears under George Halas and Jim Finks.

Finks, of course, had built multiple Super Bowl teams for the Minnesota Vikings in the 1970s and as he began to lay the groundwork for the great Bears teams of the ’80s, he looked north to his old stomping grounds for a coach to lead them, but it wasn’t Ryan he chose.

Neill Armstrong had been a Vikings offensive assistant from 1970 to ’77 and it was Armstrong who persuaded Ryan after two years as the defensive line coach in Minnesota to become his coordinator in Chicago.

Who said Armstrong was a bust as the Bears head coach?

Ryan didn’t exactly burst onto the scene here in Chicago although there was already some talent to work with, principally a pair of young safeties named Gary Fencik and Doug Plank and a tough as nails defensive end, Mike Hartenstine.

By 1981, Finks had added Dan Hampton, Mike Singletary, Otis Wilson, Todd Bell, Leslie Frazier and Al Harris and with the nucleus of one of the greatest defenses of all time, Finks and “Papa Bear” Halas agreed it was time for Armstrong to get the old heave-ho.

Those kids – and make no mistake, they were just kids at the time – were so convinced that they were on the threshold of greatness, and they believed so strongly that Ryan was the biggest reason that they joined together behind Fencik and Hampton to plead with Halas to give Ryan the head job.

Of course, unbeknownst to them, and many believe to Finks as well, Halas had another idea, and Mike Ditka became the head coach of the Bears.

But the old man was so moved by the belief and devotion of his young players that Halas informed Ditka that he and Ryan would be a package deal and Buddy was retained as defensive coordinator.

Those players and the rest who joined them leading up to the magical ’85 season loved, respected and trusted Ryan beyond all limits.

Imagine the courage and devotion it took for those 20-somethings to go to the founder of the National Football League and the man who signed their paychecks – grudgingly by most ac-

FOOD Atlantic Beach Pie a dessert with a story

By KATIE WORKMAN The Associated Press This Atlantic Beach Pie recipe comes from Bill Smith, longtime chef of Crook’s Corner restaurant in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. When I first tasted it, I went into a pie-induced trance. I have a fuzzy memory of finishing the pie, sharing it with my dinner companion, forks nudging each other for the final bites.

Atlantic Beach Pie commonly was served at seafood restaurants on the North Carolina coast when Smith was growing up. He told me back in the day, there was a commonly held belief that if you ate sweets after a seafood meal you would get sick. The exception was this citrus pie, the only dessert served at many of these coastal seafood joints.

It often was served with meringue on top, but Bill prefers it with whipped cream, and I am

not about to argue.

The beauty of this pie lies in the play between the salty, dense crust made from soda crackers and the creamy sweetand-tart filling featuring citrus juice.

This is now one of my family’s favorite pies, and I have made it part of my life’s work to share it with as many people as I can. It’s a good story, but it’s an even better pie.

Cardamom lends fragrant twist to banana bread

Banana bread is a time-tested American classic, perfect for making in advance for picnics, gifts and for using up ripe bananas. And given it’s all-American status, it’s a perfect way to start (or end) July 4th.

Here’s a variation with an Indian twist – cardamom, which often grows next to bananas in Kerala. In small amounts, cardamom has delicate floral and eucalyptus notes, which brings out the best in more traditional ingredients in banana bread and makes for a fragrant treat.

Like many Indians, I add jiggery for sweetness. It is an unrefined sugar made from the sap of date palms or sugarcane. It has a deep caramel flavor to it, a cross between molasses and fudge that adds a richness and great color to the bread. Jaggery can be found in cakes or cones at Asian food

stores or online, but if you can’t find it, it can be substituted for Muscovado sugar.

Banana Bread With Cardamom and Jaggery Start to finish: 1 hour 20 minutes (20 minutes active time) Servings: 10

1 stick butter, unsalted 1 cup jaggery, grated (or substitute Muscovedo sugar) 2 cups white flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 2 teaspoons ground cardamom A pinch of salt 2 tablespoons milk 2 large eggs 1 cup mashed ripe bananas, plus 1 banana for decoration

Put the butter and grated jiggery into a pan and melt over a very low heat. Stir until well mixed with the consistency of melted chocolate, then remove from the heat and leave to cool to one side.

Sift together the flour, baking powder, cardamom and salt and leave to one side.

In another bowl, add the mashed banana and milk, and whisk in the eggs one by one.

Add the jaggery and butter mixture. Whisk again until properly mixed.

Gently fold the wet ingredients to the flour mixture until mixed together then pour the batter into the tin. To decorate, slice the remaining banana lengthways into ¼ inch slices and place over the top of the batter.

Bake for 45 minutes to an hour, or until a skewer comes out clean. Cool before slicing.

Exercise helps reduce diabetes risk Dear Dr. K: I have a family history of diabetes, and I’d like to do what I can to reduce my risk. My doctor says aerobic exercise will help, but I prefer weight training.

Could that help too?

Dear Reader: Exercise, particularly aerobic exercise, helps to reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes, which is by far the more common type of diabetes. So I assume that’s the type that runs in your family.

Of course, not everyone can do aerobic activity. Others, like yourself, simply might prefer weight training. According to a study from Harvard and the University of Southern Denmark, weight training also can cut diabetes risk.

Your body relies on a basic fuel called glucose, which comes from the starches and sugars you eat. A hormone called insulin delivers the glucose from your blood to the cells of your body. But if you don’t produce enough insulin, or if your cells ignore the insulin, you may develop Type 2 diabetes.

The biggest risk factor for Type 2 diabetes is being overweight. Aerobic activity burns large amounts of energy, which helps achieve weight loss and lower diabetes risk. Indeed, in the study I mentioned, men who did 150 minutes a week of aerobic exercise – brisk walking, jogging, swimming or tennis, for example – reduced their diabetes risk by 52 percent. This result was in line with past studies.

But this study also found men who did 150 minutes of weight training a week saw a 34 percent risk reduction. That was true regardless of whether they performed aerobic exercise. Why might weight training reduce diabetes risk? Your muscles use glucose. By creating more muscle that needs more glucose when you exercise, you reduce glucose levels remaining in the blood.

Aerobic exercise has benefits beyond reducing diabetes risk. It also lowers the risk for many other diseases, including heart disease. And it is associated with a longer lifespan.

So, I recommend adding some aerobic exercise to your routine. You can keep the focus on weight training, but add some aerobics.

When weight training, remember to warm up and cool down to reduce your risk of injury. Give your muscles at least 48 hours to recover between weight-training sessions. If you are just beginning a weight-training program, a physical therapist or trainer can help to select exercises that are right for your body and current health.

Like you, many people have a family history of diabetes. That means your risk is higher than it is for the average person.

The good news is you can greatly reduce your risk of getting diabetes. Being able to reduce your risk of any major disease by 50 to 60 percent is remarkable. In fact, there is no medicine yet invented that can reduce your risk for Type 2 diabetes as much as the combination of aerobic exercise and weight training.

I knew my husband for two years before we married four years ago. My problem is we are no longer intimate – not even hugs or kisses. For the first two years we did have sex, but the only affection I get now is a kiss on my forehead or my hand.

When I asked if we could sleep together during the weekends, he refused. He says the reason is he has to finish his work. I have told him how much this hurts me and he keeps promising to change, but it never happens.

When I recently asked him why, he said he is “shy.” I am starting to doubt his love for me because when I need him, he’s not there, and when I need his support, he doesn’t protect me.

His mother is pushing us for a grandchild.

She blames me for not “forcing” her son to sleep with me, which is impossible. I spend most of my time working out at the gym or doing volunteer work, which keeps me from getting too depressed. But when my motherin-law starts in, I feel scared and don’t dare go back to my house. Every few nights I have nightmares and wake up crying. I’m beginning to think I should end this marriage. I found this at dictionary.com: An attempt to win a trick with a card while holding a higher card not in sequence with it, in the hope that the card or cards between will not be played.
