hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The 16-year-old boy behind the wheel of an SUV that struck a Morris couple as they were bicycling last week was driving a vehicle owned by the principal of Morris Elementary School District 54, according to a traffic crash report.

Mark and Janice Wendling of Morris were riding bicycles west about 7 p.m.

June 21 in the 4500 block of Old Stage Road when they were struck from behind by an SUV, according to a news release issued the day after the crash by the Grundy County Coroner’s Office. Mark Wendling was pronounced dead at the scene, and Janice Wendling was pronounced dead later that evening at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.

Grundy County Sheriff Kevin Callahan has declined to release the traffic crash report, noting the investigation into the incident is ongoing. Shaw Media has obtained a copy of the report, which Callahan confirmed was accurate.

The crash report states the vehicle driven by the 16-year-old is owned by Chris Maier, District 54 principal, who

resides in Seneca.

Messages left Monday afternoon with Maier were not immediately returned.

Janice Wendling was a math teacher in District 54. Mark Wendling worked as an engineer at the Exelon LaSalle County Generating Station in Marseilles.

State’s attorney will not file charges against Joliet Councilman Jim McFarland

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Will County State’s Attorney’s Office will not file charges against Joliet Councilman Jim McFarland regarding his use of government envelopes and postage, a spokesman said Monday.

The state’s attorney had been asked in November to determine whether McFar- Jim land broke any laws when McFarland he sent three mailings that Joliet officials considered political.

people and didn’t remember what happened. The report also notes the teen was joined at the scene by his mother as well as by Maier, who is described as a family friend. Shaw Media is not naming the teen as he is a minor and is not facing charges as an adult. He has been issued a citation for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Another person at the scene reported that the driver of the SUV threw something into the woods, according to the report. Police said they found a baggie, which field tested positive as marijuana and later was weighed at 15 grams. The driver told police the last time he used marijuana was two days prior to June 21, according to the crash report.

The driver was taken to Morris Hospital to be evaluated, according to the report. He also provided a blood and urine sample for analysis.

Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland said his office is waiting for the investigation to be completed before deciding whether or what further charges might be filed.

Preserve District of Will County asked the state’s attorney to determine whether McFarland broke any laws when he used a postage meter at the agency to stamp some of the envelopes.

“We made a determination that we cannot meet our burden of proof beyond a reasonable doubt,” said Charles Pelkie, a spokesman for the State’s Attorney’s Office. “As a result, we will not be filing charges in this matter.”

McFarland’s attorney said he was not surprised at the news.

“The decision comes as no surprise to me because of the fact that he did not commit any crime,” attorney George Lenard said.

McFarland referred questions to Lenard.

The city of Joliet is still looking into the matter, which has been a subject of closed session meetings of the City Council, Mayor Bob O’Dekirk said.

“We’ve talked about it several times the last several months,” O’Dekirk said.

He said the council has not decided whether the city should pursue any action against McFarland.

Forest Preserve District spokeswoman Cindy Cain issued an email statement saying the matter was closed as far as the district was concerned.

Early challenges, growth mark his 28 years as president of Lewis University

bokon@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – With Brother James Gaffney preparing to leave after 28 years as president at Lewis University, it was fitting that there were two construction projects underway outside his office at Stritch Hall.

Gaffney has led the university in an era of growth in which new academic buildings went up, more dorms were built as the campus expanded, and enrollment more than tripled to nearly 7,000.

The landscape has changed – literally.

Gaffney, whose last day as president is Thursday, remembers early in his time as president when even planting flowers was a big move.

“There was no money. When I became president, we planted the first flowers,” he said.

If there had been any planted previously, it had been a while, Gaffney said.

Before he became president, Gaffney was chairman of the board at Lewis University for 10 years.

One of his early memories (besides planting flowers) was meeting the father of a prospective student who had visited Lewis during an open house.

“He said, ‘I drove around your campus once and left. I decided any place that can’t maintain a campus can’t maintain quality academics,’ ” Gaffney recalled. “I decided this has to change.”

Today, Lewis plants thousands of flowers each year – 32,000 tulips alone.

It is designated a Tree Campus USA.

“Today, we have 425 acres,” Gaffney said. “We have built or completely renovated 28 buildings in the last 25 years.”

Lewis also has added five satellite campuses – four in the Chicago area and one in Albuquerque.

Gaffney said the upgraded facilities have accommodated a threefold increase in the number of science students at Lewis University in the past four years. Physics majors have grown from about a dozen to 75. Computer science majors have grown from 35 to 250.

The other building under construction is a new residence center for the 23 Christian Brothers at Lewis University. Not all of them are on university staff, but they live at Lewis while doing work at other Christian Brothers institutions in the Chicago area.

Gaffney himself will be moving in, after a sabbatical. He will be president emeritus after Thursday. But after 28 years as president, Gaffney said one of the best things he can do is not interfere with incoming President David Livingston.

“I’ll slip back and forth. I’ll be available to help the president in any way he needs,” Gaffney said.

But he plans to stay out of the way, he said, because after so many years at the helm, “the new president can’t be in my shadow. It’s the responsible thing to do.”

Students celebrate Chinese immersion program More online

fsarver@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Students at Plainfield North High School on Monday demonstrated their knowledge of the Chinese language through kung fu.

Before an audience, the students physically expressed certain Chinese characters, such as posing in a sturdy stance to represent the character for the mountain or roaring for the character that represents a lion. Then they told an old folktale of a hunter heading to a mountain to hunt for mice.

Their performance was one of several that were part of a celebration of the students’ participation in the summer Chinese immersion program at Plainfield District 202.

The ceremony featured colorful lion costumes, umbrellas, drums, singing, dancing, humorous skits and a Chinese yo-yo demonstration that left the audience – many of whom were the students’ parents – impressed.

“It’s a lot of fun,” said John Slawinski, whose daughter, Alyse, has been part of the program for three years.

“I know my daughter comes home every day out of the program really enjoying it and learning a lot and making new friends. It’s a very enjoyable program that also immerses [the

District 202 has offered the Chinese immersion program for six years.

The program is offered through STARTALK, a project funded by the National Security Agency and administered by the National Foreign Language Center at University of Mary-

land, according to its website.

Students in elementary, middle and high school learn how to read, write, speak, listen and type in Chinese while also learning about Chinese culture.

Tom Hernandez, District 202 spokesman, told the audience Monday that the district went through a tremendous period of change in the late

1990s and early 2000s.

“This program is part of that change. We are much more diverse than we used to be in District 202 and this program is part of our efforts to honor that diversity,” he said.

Lilian Blecha, the program’s site director who works with Fred Lu, the program’s director, said she hopes to continue with Chinese immersion next year at District 202.

The students were taught by teachers Chifang Hong and May Wang and teacher’s assistants Michelle Lao, Joey Longo, Grace Mabulay and Andrea Du. Lauren Longo, who is Joey Longo’s mother, said the opportunities for students who study Chinese is endless, noting her son was able to travel for six weeks to China on a scholarship.

“There are so many opportunities out there and this program is just a baby of many others. So let it open up the doors for your children,” she said.

Plainfield D-202 board approves stadium video displays

fsarver@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield District 202 Board of Education approved the purchase and installation of video display boards for all four high school stadiums.

At Monday’s board meeting, board member Heather Drake questioned the estimated cost of the proposal, which is $583,600 to be paid for by construction funds.

“I’m struggling to spend that much money when you can get a electronic scoreboard that isn’t video for $9,000 or less. I guess I need more information as to why we feel the need for the video portion of it,” she said.

Board Vice President Greg Nichols and Superintendent Lane Abrell noted the video display boards will be a source of revenue. Abrell said each display board could generate an estimated $40,000 a year through advertising.

“I’m struggling to spend that much money when you can get a electronic scoreboard that isn’t video for $9,000 or less. I guess I need more information as to why we feel the need for the video portion of it.”

He said the maintenance for them would be none and the advertising is computer-based. Board member William Slabich said sections of the screens can be replaced if damaged instead of the whole screen. The board unanimously approved the proposal.

The Daktronics video displays would come from Shorewood-based Express Signs & Lighting Maintenance.

The purchasing would be through the Intergovernmental Cooperative

Agreement Purchasing Network, which District 202 has been a member of since April 11, according the proposal from Paul Gonzalez, the district’s facilities director.

Gonzalez wrote that the displays would bring opportunities for game replays, feature other school activities, groups and clubs, as well as sponsorship.

In a letter to Gonzalez, Eddie Hartsell, of Express Signs & Lighting Maintenance, wrote there would be a full one-year warranty and an additional four-year warranty for parts only from

Personnel changes

The board approved appointing Michelle Imbordino as the principal of Liberty Elementary School for the upcoming school year.

She served as the assistant principal at Eichelberger Elementary School since 2012 and first came to District 202 as a first grade teacher for Freedom Elementary School, according to a District 202 news release.

Wesmere Elementary School Assistant Principal Kristen Salgado will replace Imbordino at Eichelberger.

The board also approved appoint Roxanne Ross as elementary special education administrator next school year.

Ross will replace Christy Ernst, who is retiring in June, district officials said.

Ross has served since 2012 as principal for Proviso Area for Exceptional Children special education cooperative in Maywood.

Taste of Joliet draws high attendance

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – More than 50,000 people attended Taste of Joliet during the weekend, according to preliminary counts from the Joliet Park District.

“We’re still putting the numbers together,” Executive Director Tom Carstens said Monday.

But a combination of dry weather and popular acts may have delivered the most successful Taste of Joliet yet, he said.

“We will definitely end up in the black this year,” he said.

Final numbers should be tallied by the end of the week.

Taste of Joliet is not always a moneymaker because rainouts on a concert night can dampen attendance – and revenue – while the park district still has to pay for the performers. But large crowds came out for Styx on Friday night and Trace Adkins on Saturday night.

Carstens said it’s hard to determine which performance drew more people.

Taste of Joliet executive director “They were neck and neck. They both filled the stadium,” he said.

He said aerial shots of Memorial Stadium showed how popular both performances proved to be.

“The football field, including the track, was wall-to-wall with people,” Carstens said. “The stadium was three-fourths full in terms of bleacher seating.”

Sunday usually is the lightest day for Taste attendance, but Carstens said a princesses and superheroes show that day for a younger audience also turned out a good crowd.

Taste of Joliet included 28 food vendors, whom Carstens said did well because of the good weather and turnout.

Carstens, who started at the district in April, said he was impressed by the district staff’s handling of the event.

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet Fire Department Capt. Rodney Leggero described it as the cutest thing in the world when his colleagues rescued a duckling Sunday.

A resident flagged down Joliet Police Officer David Blackmore when he was on patrol in the 7000 block of Caton Farm Road near the Joliet/Plainfield border after seeing a duck and her babies trying to cross the road.

Blackmore was able to locate the mother duck and three babies by a sew-

er grate but noticed one duckling was in the sewer after hearing faint chirping.

He and nearby residents tried to reach the duck but were not able to without the help of Joliet Fire Department Engine Co. 9: Leggero, firefigher and paramedic Jimmie Yates, fire engineer Mike Drain and Lt. Matt Ehrsam.

They all worked together to reunite the baby duck with its mom at a nearby pond.

“We see a lot of bad stuff, but it was nice to put a baby back together with mama,” Leggero said.

LOCAL BRIEFS JOLIET – Joliet police responding to a reported shooting victim Sunday evening at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet discovered a second person at the hospital who had been injured by gunfire.

Officers went to Saint Joseph in response to an incident in which a 15-year-old boy who lives on Pioneer Road in Crest Hill had been shot in the hand, Joliet police Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said.

The shooting was reported to have occurred at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at Joliet and McDonough streets in Joliet, Gregory said, where the boy heard shots and began to run before being picked up by a relative and taken to the hospital.

When police arrived at Saint Joseph, they found another person who had been shot in the knee, Gregory said – a man in his late 20s who is also from Crest Hill, Crest Hill Police Deputy Chief Ed Clark said.

Clark said the victim told Crest Hill police, who took the report, that he was wounded by gunfire from a vehicle Sunday afternoon on Pioneer Road in Crest Hill.

There are no suspects in either incident, and both remain under investigation.

JOLIET – A Joliet teen said he was sitting in a vehicle when it was shot repeatedly Sunday evening in the St. Pat’s neighborhood in Joliet. The shooting occurred at 7:36 p.m. in the 600 block of Morgan Street, said Joliet Police Deputy Chief Ed Gregory, who said officers responded to the scene after receiving multiple calls about shots being fired.

Police found a maroon Saturn in an alley that had been shot numerous times, Gregory said. While they were investigating the area, officers were approached by a 16-year-old boy who said he was sitting in the Saturn when the shooting happened, Gregory said. No one was injured in the incident. Gregory said there are three suspects in the shooting – a black man with dreadlocks and wearing powder blue shorts; a black man wearing a red shirt; and a black man for whom police have no clothing description. They were traveling in a four-door gray Pontiac, Gregory said.

Police believe the man in the blue shorts and the man in the red shirt exited the Pontiac during the shooting, and at least one of them was the shooter, Gregory said, while the man with no clothing description was the driver.

LOCAL BRIEFS Joliet police: Man threatened at gunpoint in East Side park

JOLIET – A man has been charged after he was accused of threatening another man at gunpoint at an East Side Joliet park.

The victim – a 25-year-old from Joliet – was at Gottschlag Park, 825 E. Cass St., with his three children when he was approached at 4:10 p.m. Sunday by Johnnie R. Jones, Joliet police Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said.

Jones, 22, of Joliet, pulled Johnnie R. Jones a silver handgun from a green backpack and pointed the gun at the victim, Gregory said.

The victim reported that Jones is dating his ex-girlfriend.

Another man intervened and Jones left the park, but after the victim called police, officers went to Jones’ home in the 1200 block of East Cass Street, Gregory said.

Jones – who was on parole for a weapons offense – was being taken into custody when he began kicking officers and had to be restrained, Gregory said.

A police search of Jones’ home revealed

the handgun, the backpack, ammunition, 54 Xanax pills, cocaine, marijuana and about $400 cash, Gregory said.

Jones was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, aggravated battery of police, aggravated assault, possession of a controlled substance and parole violation, Gregory said.

SUV destroyed in fire at I-80 and Center Street in Joliet

JOLIET – An SUV was destroyed in a fire Monday evening in Joliet.

The incident occurred at 5:30 p.m. at the northbound Center Street exit ramp off eastbound Interstate 80, Joliet Fire Department Lt. John Berta said.

Berta said that when firefighters arrived the GMC vehicle was fully engulfed in flames and it is a total loss.

No one was injured, he said.

The ramp was closed about an hour as crews responded to the fire, according to Berta, who said the cause of the incident is unknown. In addition the Joliet Fire Department, the city’s police department also was on scene.

mmallory@shawmedia.com BRAIDWOOD – There’s a chance 911 calls to the Braidwood Police Department won’t be dispatched by WESCOM employees come February 2017.

The city of Braidwood has given formal notice to WESCOM, a consolidated 911 emergency dispatch service provider – also known as Western Will County Communication Center – that it intends to officially part ways with the service provider Feb. 9, 2017.

But where calls will be dispatched from after that date is anyone’s guess.

Braidwood Police Chief Nick Ficarello said Monday that “there have been issues pertaining to quality with WESCOM services,” adding the city has to consider cost and what’s best for Braidwood residents.

“We’re exploring our options,” Ficarello said. “But we would like to be a part of the new conglomerate at the sheriff’s department.”

A proposed $5 million dispatch center has been added to designs for the future Will County sheriff’s facility on Laraway Road in Joliet, slated to open in March 2018. The new dispatch center would bring the county into accordance with a state law that mandates consolidation of dispatch agencies all over the state.

Will County is trying to convert from six dispatch centers to three. The three centers would be WESCOM in Plainfield, Joliet’s dispatch center and

The plan is to close the EASTCOM center in Crete, Lincolnway center in Frankfort, a Romeoville center and the current Will County Sheriff’s Office center. They would all be folded into the new sheriff’s facility center. Braidwood calls currently are dispatched out of WESCOM’s Plainfield building.

WESCOM Executive Director Steve Rauter said Monday that he was not aware Braidwood is interested in joining the new dispatch center on Laraway Road. He said the two parties have not communicated lately, while Ficarello

said talks are between attorneys for WESCOM and the city of Braidwood.

“We’d like to have [Braidwood] engage us in conversations,” Rauter said.

Rauter said Braidwood dispatching calls through another public safety answering point would actually increase the overall amount of dispatch calls in the county. The state law was designed in hopes of reducing calls and arrival times, he said, adding it would be counterproductive for Braidwood to use another answering point because WESCOM is still obligated to transfer calls to said point.

“The new building, at the earliest, would be open in 2018,” Rauter said.

“I’m confused what their intentions would be [until then]. We’d prefer them not to leave. But we’d certainly need to know where to transfer those calls.”

The Braidwood Fire Department has not expressed a desire to leave WESCOM, Rauter said, adding that they “have too much in common” with neighboring communities to do so.

OBITUARIES WILLIAM L. GLASS Born: Nov. 7, 1922 Died: June 21, 2016

William L. Glass, age 93, slipped away at Peppi’s Hospice House, to be with the Lord on 6-21-2016 in Tucson, AZ, in the presence of his two loving daughters, Fay and Kayla. Born Nov. 7, 1922, in Spring Valley. Moved with his family to Joliet in 1960, lived there until 2010, when he moved to Tucson, AZ. Preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Irene (Laugal); and his parents, William L. and Ethel G. (Bush) Glass. Survived by three children, William D. (Maureen) Glass of Westmont, Fay L. (Dennis) Peceniak of Tucson, AZ, and Kayla S. (Jay) Hamrick of Oswego; a sister, Luella M. (Edward) Capitani of Granville; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Numerous cousins, nephews and nieces also survive.

He was employed by Illinois Bell Telephone Co. for 37 years. Transferred from Ottawa to Joliet in 1960 as an equipment engineer and retired in December 1983. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Lockport, a WWII veteran serving with the Signal Corps in the Pacific Theatre, life member of VFW Contigny Post 367, life member of Plainfield Masonic Lodge 536 and life member of the Telephone Company Pioneers.

Memorial service will be held at Catalina Foothills Church on July 15, 2016, at noon. A Military burial of his ashes will follow at 2 p.m. at Arizona Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery at Marana, AZ. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Peppi’s Hospice or Jesus in Vietnam.

Evelyn I. Hanson (nee Isberg), age 95 years, passed away on Saturday, June 25, 2016, at her late residence. She was born in New Lenox on June 8, 1921, resided in Joliet/ Manhattan

(Ranch Oaks) until 1997, then moving to Crest Hill.

Employed as a secretary for Casey Realty, retiring in 1979; and member of the Jackson Township Homemakers, secretary four years.

Preceded in death by her loving husband, Lawrence E. Hanson (1980); her parents, Carl and Kathryn (nee Embling) Isberg; and a sister, Mary Ellen Heintzelman.

Survived by her son, Lawrence (Merry Lynn) Hanson; her daughter, Barbara Hanson; her grandchildren, Emily (Eric) Fifer and Joshua Hanson; two great-grandchildren, Mia Genevieve Fifer and Grayson James Fifer; her loving caregiver, Gena; numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Born: Nov. 23, 1920; in Joliet Died: June 25, 2016; in Joliet John G. Kontos, age 95, of Joliet, died peacefully, Saturday, June 25, 2016, at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home surrounded by his family.

He was born Nov. 23, 1920, in Joliet, to the late Irene (nee Calamaras) and Gust Kontos and was raised in Greece. John returned to Joliet at the age of 14 to complete his education

and begin a long career as an area businessman that was only interrupted while he proudly served his country in Europe during WWII with the U.S. Army. As he was raised with a tireless work ethic; his pursuit of owning a business materialized after returning from the service when he, his brother Nick and brother-in-law, John Samios were involved in the grocery business in Elgin and Joliet. Long days were no stranger to him and he would go home only when the job was done.

John was one of the original partners of Town and Country Lanes, which opened in Joliet in 1958. He eventually became sole proprietor and had been working side by side with his son George since 1976 in the operation of the bowling alley. He was known by his staff and customers as a hard working man who led by example and was always appreciative of all customers, past and present. He always felt as if they were family.

Beloved husband of 55 years to the late Sophie (nee Griparis); loving father of George (Cindy) Kontos, Lea Kontos and Joni (Mark) Gonzalez; proud grandfather of DeAnna Kontos, John (Kelly) Kontos, Jori, Kelsey and Lindsay Gonzalez; fond brother of the late Nick (late Julia) Kontos and the late Mary (late John) Samios; dear brother-in-law of the late Mary (late Peter) Honiotes, Jim (Carolyn) Griparis, Jack (Judy) Griparis, Helen (late Jim) Chioles, Mimi (late Fred) Howland and Penny (late John) Obren. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

David N. Martis, a 77-yearold lifelong resident of Lockport and former fire chief, passed away peacefully at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home. Dave was born into life on April 24, 1939, and entered eternal life on June 25, 2016.

Dave is survived by Judy (Rodeghiero) Martis, who was his high school sweetheart, best friend and wife of 55 years. He is also survived by his loving and devoted children, Greg (Michele), Jeff (Karen) and Dan (Jackie) Martis; his cherished grandchildren, Megan (fiancé Chris Meyer), Emily, Kyle, Molly, Hunter and Jackson Martis; his loving and

treasured sister-in-law, Susan Rodeghiero; dear brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jerry and Sandy Rodeghiero; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Dave is preceded in death by his parents, George and Louise Martis; and sister, Doris Kucer.

He was hired in 1962 by the Lockport Township Fire District and retired after 31 years of service, with the last six years as fire chief. He also served as a district fire trustee for 18 years, capping off 49 years of dedication to the fire service and was a charter member of Lockport Firefighters Local 1544. Dave served in the U.S. Army Company E First Brigade 16th U.S. Infantry.

He was a member of St. Dennis Catholic Church in Lockport, the Lockport Moose Lodge 1557 and American Legion John Olson Post 18.

Dave’s passion was hunting and fishing with his three sons, devoted Labrador retriever, Brandy, and lifelong friend, Ray Wittkofski. He also enjoyed traveling, camping and, most of all, cooking his famous recipes

at the family getaway home in Berlin, WI, with his children and grandchildren. Dave was a skilled craftsman and electrician and built many homes, including the home where the family has resided for 36 years.

He was a quiet, strong man, who was a deep thinker and had a heart of gold!

For all the new ground forged during Gaffney’s time as president, one of his biggest accomplishments may have been restoring the university to its Lasallian mission, said Kurt Schackmuth, vice president of Mission and Identity at Lewis and a former student at the university.

The De La Salle Christian Brothers have overseen Lewis since 1960. The university was founded in 1932.

“He brought to the university a sense of renewal and recommitment to our Catholic and Lasallian mission,” Schackmuth said.

Gaffney’s faith gave him optimism to face Lewis’ problems early on and build for the future, Schackmuth said.

“I think that sense of meaning has given him a confidence that has caused him to look optimistically toward the future,” he said. “There’s something about him being in the right time in the right place for 28 years to build this foundation for Lewis University.”

Five of those are connected to his role as president of Lewis, and he will leave them. But Gaffney plans to continue to serve on a dozen other boards.

Close to home, Gaffney is chairman of the board at St. Joseph High School in Westchester. He also is on the board of Catholic universities in Beirut and Ethiopia, positions that require some travel. Other boards include First Midwest Bank and the local chapter of the American Red Cross.

Short-term budget fix for state close Rauner, lawmakers yet to agree on school funding

SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Bruce Rauner said Monday that he’s close to a compromise with Democratic lawmakers on a partial-year budget plan with just three days left in the fiscal year, but the gap between the two sides on a second measure to open public schools on time became apparent late in the day.

Senate Democrats released to The Associated Press a school-funding plan that would outspend Rauner’s by more than $500 million.

Rauner told reporters that he wants the General Assembly, which returns to session Wednesday for the first time in a month, to OK the two plans he favors and keep government operating past the close of the budget year on June 30.

CHICAGO – An attorney appointed last year by Gov. Bruce Rauner to lead the Illinois medical marijuana program has resigned to pursue work in the private sector.

Joseph Wright, 32, who was in the position for just more than one year, told The Associated Press on Monday he felt the time was right to seek other opportunities, possibly in the medical cannabis industry.

A spokeswoman for the governor confirmed the resignation Monday.

Spokeswoman Catherine Kelly told the AP the governor’s office “will have no further comment” on the reasons for the resignation.

The new plan would send $286 million more to Chicago schools. That’s a 30 percent increase that puts it in the top 5 percent of districts getting the biggest percentage increases, but not at the top of the list.

“This is nothing more than a backdoor bailout of the severely mismanaged Chicago public school system,” Rauner spokesman Lance Trover said in a statement.

Illinois is the only state without a budget agreement for this fiscal year, and is on the brink of starting its second.

Rauner and Democrats have been squabbling for more than a year. The governor has insisted on cost-cutting changes in law to boost business, freeze property taxes, curb union influence, and adopt political term limits and fairer ways to draw legislative districts. Democrats contend the priority should be spending cuts and a tax increase to get control of a multibillion-dollar deficit.

CHICAGO – Activists are pushing for tougher laws on child sexual abuse in the wake of former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert’s hush-money case that revealed he abused several high school students decades ago.

Organizers gathered in Chicago on Sunday to call for the tightening of state and federal laws. The main organizer was the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, or SNAP. Hastert couldn’t be charged criminally with sex abuse because statutes of limitations in Illinois ran out. The Illinois Republican was prosecuted instead on federal banking violations as he sought

Museum gets grant to upgrade interactives

CHICAGO – A northern Illinois museum is getting an injection of funds to upgrade its displays.

The (DeKalb) Daily Chronicle reported that the Midwest Museum of Natural History is receiving $15,000 for new technology interactives for its main gallery.

It’s a DeKalb County Community Foundation Community Needs grant. The Sycamore-based museum will use the funds to buy new touch screens and audio stations.

The museum’s executive director, Cindy Khatri, said she’s thrilled with the financial support. She said it will help present information about all the specimens on display.

Before deadline, Senate to consider Puerto Rico bill WASHINGTON –Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew is warning of widespread consequences, from layoffs of police officers to a hospital closure, if the Senate fails to act before Friday on a rescue package for debt-stricken Puerto Rico.

The U.S. territory is in a decadelong recession, and the island owes a $2 billion debt payment to creditors on July 1. The House already passed legislation to create a new control board and restructure some of the U.S. territory’s $70 billion debt.

Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has said the Senate will consider the House bill this week, but he will need support from both parties to surmount a certain 60-vote threshold to advance legislation. Votes could come as soon as Wednesday.

Abortion ruling may not open door for new clinics

The Associated Press AUSTIN, Texas – Abortion providers celebrating the U.S. Supreme Court striking down major Texas abortion restrictions Monday also begrudgingly acknowledged a daunting reality: The damage is done, and no time soon are women likely to see new clinics replacing about 20 abortion facilities lost since 2013.

The restrictions that justices toppled in a 5-3 decision have already forced more than half of Texas’ abortion clinics out of business – from 41 facilities before the law was passed to 19. Had the law that former Democratic State Senator Wendy Davis once temporarily blocked with an 11-hour filibuster been found constitutional, only 10 would have remained open in a state of 27 million people.

But while the biggest abortion ruling by the Supreme Court in a generation leaves Planned Parenthood and others in Texas free to open smaller and more modest clinics, providers made no promises about breaking ground on new facilities. And any openings, they cautioned, could take years, meaning that women in rural Texas counties are still likely to face hours-long drives to abortion clinics for the foreseeable future.

Buildings need to be leased.

Staffs need to be hired. Clinics must still obtain state licenses and funds for medical equipment must be raised. Meanwhile, the Republican-controlled Legislature is all but certain to remain hostile to abortion providers that try to expand.

Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards also would not immediately commit to the nation’s largest abortion provider opening more Texas clinics, but she expressed hope.

“Just to re-establish services in a community and get the licensures is just not something that is going to happen overnight,” said Richards, who is the daughter of former Texas Gov. Ann Richards.

The Texas laws required doctors who perform abortions to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals and forced clinics to meet hospital-like standards for outpatient surgery. The bill propelled Davis, then a state senator who ran for governor in 2014, to national stardom when her filibuster packed the Texas Capitol with raucous protesters whose shouts deafened the Senate floor as time ran out on the measure.

More than 40 abortion clinics in Texas were open at the time, but neither Richards nor abortion-rights groups would predict whether Texas would ever reach that number again. Davis said the expectation for now is that areas without a nearby clinic will

at least see one reopen within the next six months, and said the goal for Texas may not necessarily be getting back above 40 facilities.

“The benchmark is more closely aligned with geographic proximity,” Davis said. “If women are able to geographically access that care without tremendous costs or burdensome travel, then we’ll be back to where we need to be.”

Monday’s ruling now gives Texas abortion providers the go-ahead to continue offering abortions in smaller facilities that are akin to doctor’s offices. Many clinics had faced multimillion-dollar renovations to comply with the law, such as upgrades to air ventilation systems and hallways wide enough to accommodate hospital beds.

Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott rebuked the justices for taking away rules that he says protect the health and safety of women, and Republican leaders in states including Michigan, Missouri and Pennsylvania have used similar arguments while enacting nearly identical laws.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, writing in a concurring opinion, said it was “beyond rational belief” that the Texas law looks after women.

Redistricting won’t fix the state’s issues Illinoisans are undeniably furious about the way their government has been running (or, more accurately, not running). They’re looking for solutions and some are grasping at anything within reach.

A downstate newspaper editorial the other day tried to pin the blame for just about all of our state’s fiscal and economic problems on the way politicians in this state draw legislative district maps.

That’s just silly.

Reforming the process by taking away map-drawing duties from politicians and handing it to a nonpartisan commission is definitely a good idea.

But don’t kid yourself that reforming this one process, where politicians choose their voters instead of voters choosing their politicians, will suddenly make Illinois great again, or whatever.

First of all, it may not work like some think it will. When editorial writers and pundits talk about redistricting reform, they usually focus on the man who draws many of the legislative district maps: Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan, one of the most disliked politicians in all of Illinois, and the man who is blamed by many for much (or even all) of our problems. Take that power away from him and you’ll do away with Madi-

OK, but take a look at the Illinois Election Data website (http://bit. ly/28WmfER), which has the 2014 gubernatorial election results by Illinois House district. Those districts were drawn, of course, by Madigan.

Bruce Rauner won 50.8 percent of the popular vote in 2014. Yet, by my count, Rauner also won 69 of Illinois’ 118 House districts that same year, or 58.5 percent.

In other words, the Republican candidate for governor won 22 more House districts than the House Republicans.

That’s why Rauner thinks he has a real shot at picking up some House seats this year. His operation is focusing like a laser on the districts he won.

Why didn’t Republican House candidates do as well as Rauner?

Let’s step back a couple of years.

The House Democrats picked up seats in 2012 after they drew the new map in 2011, but besides creating districts that certainly favored their candidates, the wins were also due to ’12

being a hugely favorable (to them) presidential election year. Democrats do much better here in presidential years.

And once people are elected, it’s difficult to knock them out. By the time the national GOP wave swept through two years later, in 2014, it ran smack dab into Democratic incumbents who’d been working their new districts hard for two years. That’s always something to remember about Madigan. In exchange for his monetary and staff support, he demands rigorous door-to-door work by his candidates. Once they’re in, they tend to stay in.

This year, the presidential election means the national trend likely will be the Democrats’ friend yet again. If Rauner doesn’t net some gains, he’ll likely blame Madigan’s map, but that won’t be totally true.

And just because one party draws the map doesn’t mean it has a lock on it. For instance, the Republicans currently control three U.S. House districts that were actually drawn to favor Democrats.

Also, go back to 1991, the last time the Republicans drew the legislative district map. Madigan’s Democrats managed to hold onto control in the very next election, when Bill Clinton and Carol Moseley Braun swept the

state. But Madigan’s Democrats lost the majority two years later in a huge national GOP landslide. Madigan learned some hard lessons in 1994. He regained the majority in 1996, when President Clinton ran again, and managed to hold onto it until he could draw his own map in 2001.

Yet, the Senate Republicans held their majority throughout that very same 10-year period.

The lesson here is that getting rid of Madigan, or even clipping his wings, ain’t going to be as easy as it looks.

Again, I think that a nonpartisan, independent remap process would be a good thing no matter the Madigan-related outcome. But so would California’s open primary system, where the top two vote-getters battle it out in November even if they’re from the same party. I’d love to see that brought to Illinois.

There are lots of things we can do to reform the process. But I highly doubt that this one reform will solve all our problems. Don’t let anybody tell you otherwise, because they’re living in an overly simplistic cartoon world. I prefer the real world.

Vazquez builds power numbers as Slammers reach top of division

dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Before the opening game of the Joliet Slammers series last weekend against the Lake Erie Crushers at Silver Cross Field, Slammers manager Jeff Isom discussed the bright future for right fielder Boo Vazquez.

“If a major league organization needs an outfielder, Boo can go pretty quick,” he said. “He is a young prospect.”

On cue, the 6-foot-4, 220-pound Vazquez went out Friday and Satur-

day and accomplished a rarity. He hit grand slam home runs both nights and finished the two games with three homers and 10 RBIs. Vazquez thus moved past teammates Carter Bell and Marc Flores in RBIs. In fact, he has taken over the Frontier League lead in homers with 11 and RBIs with 39. Bell is second with 37 RBIs and Flores is fourth with 32.

Vazquez, 23, who played at the University of Pittsburgh for four years and is in his second season of pro ball, also has seven doubles, four tri-

ples and is hitting a healthy .324. Now batting in the 3-hole, he sports a .402 on-base percentage and .669 slugging mark for a 1.072 OPS. And as Isom noted, “He also has made some outstanding plays in the outfield.”

The Slammers (23-16) enjoy a onegame lead over Windy City in the Frontier League East as they open a three-game series Tuesday night at River City. Joliet will return home Friday night to begin a weekend series against Windy City.

Regardless of the opponent,

Vazquez is enjoying himself – for as long as he is here.

“I’m having a lot of fun,” he said.

“We’re just trying to play hard and complete games. We’re riding the wave right now. It’s easier to play when we’re all feeding off each other.”

Vazquez played the second half of last season with Lake Erie. Isom said the Crushers made him available shortly before this season began, and the Slammers were able to acquire him in a trade for shortstop Max Casper.

O’Sullivan making his mark with Slammers

cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Only three individuals are listed among this week’s top 10 in three major categories for Frontier League pitchers.

While two of the leaders in wins, strikeouts and ERA have enjoyed success during the past two seasons, the other wasn’t even playing in pro ball a year ago and when he did begin his career late last season, things got off to a rough start.

But the Joliet Slammers’ Liam O’Sullivan, who played collegiately at St. Leo University in Florida last year before having a brief stint with the Frontier Greys in August and September, has definitely become one of the league’s more reliable pitchers.

He’s 4-0 on the year, capturing wins in three of his last four starts. He hasn’t allowed more than three earned runs in any of his seven starts, which has helped him post a 2.23 ERA. He has 28 strikeouts during those four games and a total of 44 this season.

O’Sullivan ranks third in ERA, is tied for fourth in wins and has the seventh-highest strikeout total in the league. He has allowed 37 hits and 11 walks in 481/3 innings in nine games.

Those statistics are even more impressive when you consider how the native of South Grafton, Massachusetts, performed in his Frontier League debut last season. In six games, which featured one start, he went 0-3 with a 7.42 ERA and allowed 21 hits while striking out eight in 131/3 innings.

“I graduated from college last spring and then kind of just threw for different people while trying to find a place to play,” O’Sullivan said. “The Greys gave me an opportunity last year in the last two weeks when they were kind of hurting down the stretch.

“Is (Isom) saw me throw in Arizona and fortunately enough he’s giving me a chance and I’m just trying to take advantage of every opportunity that

Vazquez says his ultimate goal is the same as everyone’s in the Frontier League – to get a shot at affiliated ball. But that is not dominating his thoughts.

“I’m happy with the way that I’ve been able to locate all of my pitches for strikes and establish my fastball.

Joe Staley, my catcher, calls a great game and he’s a smart guy who knows what he’s doing back there. He calls the pitch and I just try to execute it.”

Southern Illinois’ Rick Teasley leads the league with 52 strikeouts, is tied for fourth with a 2.29 ERA and is off to a 4-1 start. He nearly finished in the top 10 in each category last season and led the Frontier League in wins in 2014 with 11 victories. Like O’Sullivan, Teasley also played college ball at St. Leo. While new to the Frontier League this season, Washington’s Trevor Foss is building on the success that he had in advanced Class A playing in the Angels organization. He’s 5-2, one of three

league pitchers with that many wins, ranks second with a 2.14 ERA and also is tied for ninth place with 41 strikeouts.

O’Sullivan turned in one of his best efforts last Thursday when the Slammers won, 6-2, at Windy City in a clash of the frontrunners in the East Division standings. In eight innings, he yielded two runs and seven hits while striking out five and walking nobody.

The Slammers have a pair of fourgame winners in Spencer Medick and O’Sullivan, while Sean Townsley, Kaleb Ort and Brent Choban all have recorded three wins. The first four individuals are starters. While the overall staff ERA is 4.85, these four starters have been improving of late and their combined ERA is just 3.60.

Another obvious boost for the starters is the increased production being contributed by the Slammers’ offense.

The team leads the league with 214

runs and 202 RBIs, ranks second with 39 home runs and is fourth with 356 hits.

“Our hitters make it easy to pitch,” O’Sullivan said. “These guys swing the bat really well and it makes it a lot easier when you know that you’re going to have run support each night so all you have to do is go out there and throw strikes.

“This is just a good group of guys, that’s what it comes down to. We’re all here doing the same thing and we love baseball. When you surround yourself with a good group of guys, it makes you that much better as a person and as a teammate.

“Every setting is different, so what you put in is what you’re going to get out. Coming in as a rookie, I didn’t really know how pro ball works, so I have to give a lot of credit to the veterans on this club who have really helped me out on learning how all of this works.”

Vazquez was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in a later round when he came out of Cardinal Mooney High School in Youngstown, Ohio.

Despite having a solid career at Pitt, his name did not appear on the draft list of any major league organization after his junior or senior seasons.

“I didn’t sign out of high school. I had a scholarship to Pitt,” he said. “I got some calls junior and senior year of college but didn’t get drafted.”

With the way Vazquez is hitting Frontier League pitching, someone is bound to notice him now.

“You make a mistake and Boo will make you pay,” Isom said. “He doesn’t miss a whole lot of fastballs, and when he guesses right on what’s coming, he isn’t going to miss it.”

“This league reminds me a little of the Northwest League (where he played briefly last year),” Vazquez

said. “But it’s tougher here because they ‘pitch’ more, where in the Northwest League they throw more.

It’s never an easy at-bat here. They change speeds, try to keep you off balance.”

Keeping Vazquez and his teammates off balance has become serious challenge for Frontier League pitching. The Slammers lead the league in runs scored and recently have been knocking the ball out of the park with regularity.

Vazquez is in the middle of all the fireworks.

MORRIS – It took about a quarter of the race last Friday night for John Nutley to navigate through the field from his sixth starting position to the front of the pack in the 40-lap Late Model feature at Grundy County Speedway.

After he got there, though, he remained there for good, as Nutley held the lead for the final 30 laps en route to winning the race by .556 seconds over second-place Eddie Hoffman.

By the end of Lap 4, Nutley had pulled into second place behind pole-sitter Jim Weber before finally taking the lead after Lap 11. Point leaders Hoffman and Anthony Danta waged a battle for second behind Nutley for most of the rest of the race before Hoffman emerged with the second-place finish. Larry Schuler edged Danta for third, with Danta taking fourth and James Gregait fifth. Billy Knippenberg, Weber, Joe Vinachi, Ryan Finley and Brian Tedeschi rounded out the top 10.

In the 30-lap Mid-American feature, it was Kevin Gentie coming on strong to take over the lead from John Ventrello with three laps left to

claim the win. Gentile, who started ninth, pulled to third on Lap 20 before taking over second on Lap 25 and the lead on Lap 27. Ventrello, the pole sitter, had led the entire race to that point. Gentile then held off Ron Vandermeier Jr. down the stretch for the win, with Jeremy Clubb taking third, Cody Clubb finishing fourth and Kevin Murphy fifth. Jake Bradley, Jim Kachel, Matt Clemens, Aaron Shelton and Cody Clougherty rounded out the top 10.

In the Street Stock division’s 30-lap feature, Rick Dawson started 10th, but rose quickly through the ranks and took the lead on the fifth lap. He never failed to lead another lap en route to the victory, with John Senerchia, who started 13th, finishing second and Zach Sontag third. Christy Penrod, Craig Matteson, Randy Weese, Cheryl Hryn, Spencer Leake, Brandon Reed and Renee Farren made up the top 10.

In 4-Cylinder action, Bryce Leake took first in the 19-lap feature race, followed by Kyle Carlson, Matt Chester, Dan Schmeissing, Scott Ingram, Derek Vertheen, Jacog Theissen, Dylan Marshall, Katie Hocking and Ricky Wilson.

North sweeps DuPage River Pony All-Star games SUBMITTED REPORT

CREST HILL – The North rose again Sunday in the DuPage River Conference Pony All-Star doubleheader at Joe Marshall Field at Richland School.

The North beat the South, 6-4, in Game 1 and completed the sweep, 10-4, in Game 2.

In the opener, South pitcher Jared Greskoviak retired the first three batters in the top of the first inning, striking out two. In the bottom of the first, Blake Piasecki homered off North pitcher Jonathan Forneris to deep right field to put the South up, 1-0.

In the top of the second inning, however, Michael Mumme and Jake Kellams singled and Dalton Pickett hit a two-run double for a 2-1 North lead. Greskoviak struck out the last two batters for a total of four strikeouts in two innings.

Brett Bosak singled in a bottom of the second for the South. In the third, Fabian Reqena doubled, scoring Ernesto Ramirez to tie the score, 2-2.

For South, Nicholas Michalec pitched the third and fourth innings, allowing no hits while walking one.

Scott Harper led off the fifth for the North with a single and stole second, and third, but was stranded as South pitcher Matt Munoz got out of the jam.

In the bottom of the fifth, Piasecki led off with a double off North pitcher Roman Esquivel. After a walk, Esquivel struck out the next three batters to escape.

Matt Toth drew a one-out walk, Sam Beck singled and Joe Morris walked to load the bases in the top of the sixth. After a strikeout, a catcher’s throwing error on a pickoff attempt scored two runs, and another scored on an overthrow at home for a 5-2 North lead.

The South got two runs back in the bottom of the sixth. Angel Bibian doubled, stole second and third, and Nicholas Michalec walked and stole second. A wild pitch and error brought home the runs.

Cody Kundrith led off the top of the seventh with a single, stole second and moved up on third on Bryce Barnes’ sacrifice. Jake Mayfield drew a one-out walk and Mayfield and Kundrith executed a double steal for a 6-4 North lead.

Jake Maroncelli pitched the seventh inning for the South. In the bottom of the seventh, Pickett came in to close for the North, setting down all three batters faced with two strikeouts.

In the top of the first inning of Game 2, Pickett retired the side in order with two strikeouts.

In the bottom of the first, Toth led off with a double off Maroncelli and scored on a triple by Jake Formenti.

Tyker Stanford singled and scored on a single by Morris and a throwing error, putting the North up, 3-0.

The South came right back in the top of the second, scoring three runs.

Requena led off with a walk, Ramirez doubled and Juan Gonzales singled to key the uprising.

In the bottom of the second, the

North scored a run after Kundrith walked, stole second, moved to third on Barnes’ sacrifice and scored on a wild pitch for a 4-3 lead.

Harper pitched the next three innings for the North. In the top of the third, Jared Greskoviak singled with one out, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Jayden Perez to tie it, 4-4.

Devin Moats pitched the second and third innings for the South. In the bottom of the third, Jake Kellams was hit by a pitch, Harper walked and after a double steal, they scored on a single by Pickett. Toth’s RBI double made it 7-4 North.

North scored another run in the fourth and Kellams’ double knocked in Mumme, who had singled, to make it 9-4 in the fifth.

For North, Kundrith pitched the seventh innings, giving up two singles and striking out two. In the bottom of the sixth, Toth got his third double of the game and scored the final run on a single by Mayfield.

Toth, the North catcher, also threw out two of three base stealers.

VIEWS Dick Goss pitched five shutout innings, allowing one hit and no walks while striking out five against Charlotte, the White Sox’s Triple-A affiliate.

Foltynewicz has made six starts for the Braves and is 2-2 with a 3.51 ERA. He has yielded 34 hits and eight walks while striking out 28 in 331/3 innings.

Keeping with the Sunday theme, lefty Tony Cingrani (Lincoln-Way Central) picked up his ninth save in 14 opportunities Sunday in Cincinnati’s 3-0 victory over San Diego.

He is 1-2 with a 3.74 ERA in 36 relief appearances. He has allowed 27 hits and 19 walks to go with 26 strikeouts in 332/3 innings.

AROUND THE MINORS

Elsewhere in the minor leagues, left-hander Dietrich Enns (Lincoln-Way East) continues to pitch well for the Yankees’ Double-A team at Trenton. He is 8-3 with a 1.87 ERA. In 14 starts, he has pitched 82 innings and allowed 63 hits and 34 walks while striking out 84.

Lefty Tyler Jay (Lemont), the No. 6 overall pick in the nation a year ago, is 5-5 with a 3.02 ERA in a starting role at Fort Myers, the Minnesota Twins’ affiliate in the A-Advanced Florida State League. In 12 games,

he has worked 652/3 inning, yielding 60 hits and 20 walks to go with 66 strikeouts.

Right-hander Josh DeGraaf (Morris) is working in relief for Lansing, Toronto’s team in the Class A Midwest League. He has appeared in 21 games and is 4-4 with a 3.23 ERA and two saves. He has pitched 471/3 innings and allowed 43 hits and 11 walks while striking out 36.

As noted earlier, first baseman Sam Travis (Providence), playing at Triple-A Pawtucket in the Red Sox organization, recently underwent season-ending surgery for a torn ACL. Meanwhile, a few other local names are beginning to crop up around the minor leagues. Lefthander Kevin Duchene (JCA), Jay’s teammate at Illinois, pitched four good innings in his first outing with Oakland’s team in the Arizona Rookie League. He allowed one run on three hits and one walk, and he struck out five.

Shortstop Branden Boggetto (Providence), who was drafted by Washington earlier this month, had four hits in eight at-bats in his first two games with the Nationals’ Gulf Coast League team.

Sean Renzi (Plainfield North), who also was drafted earlier this month, made three early appearances with the Arizona Rookie League White Sox and allowed four runs on five hits in four innings. He struck out five and walked one.

THE FINAL WORD

To close this column, a touching note about Providence’s Mike Madej, announced Sunday as Player of the Year on the Herald-News All-Area Baseball Team. This comes via email from Sandy Arthurs, Providence administrative assistant for athletics: “Being that Mikey Madej was just announced as player of the year, I just wanted to tell you a lil’ story about the selfless, kind act that he did. He gave me his Most Valuable Player baseball award.

“He told me a couple days before graduation that he had a gift for me.

I said, kiddingly, ‘Oh boy, can’t wait to see.’ The next day he came in and told me to close my eyes and hold out my hands. He then put the plaque in my hands. I opened my eyes and saw the plaque and with tears in my eyes, I said, ‘I can’t take this from you, it’s yours.’ He said, ‘No, Mrs. Arthurs, you are the MVP, you do so much for us.’

“I said OMG, what about your parents? He said they didn’t know, but it didn’t matter, it was his decision.

I cannot tell you how humbled and proud I was to be honored in such a way, but more importantly, I wanted you to know what an incredible sacrifice he made and what that says about his upbringing and his parents and what a great, humble person he is.

“He is one of a kind! I will always cherish ‘his’ award!”

Bulls introduce first-round pick Valentine to media on Monday

Remembering the rest of a new-look roster that’s being thrown together?

Well, still a work in progress.

After general manager Gar Forman accidenDenzel tally called Robin Lopez Valentine by his twin brother’s name, Brook, last week, coach Fred Hoiberg did the same when discussing the drafting of Valentine and the other additions to the Bulls roster this summer.

“You look at Brook Lopez as a guy that I’ve always thought very highly of, even going back to the draft when I was working in the front office in Minne-

sota,’’ Hoiberg said, talking about the trade of Derrick Rose to New York that brought back Lopez, Jerian Grant and Jose Calderon.

Well, maybe Hoiberg deserves a pass.

After all, not the easiest last few months, considering the team’s finish in his first year as coach, and now dealing with a roster turnover.

What Hoiberg was confident with was the idea that he and star Jimmy Butler can get on the same page this upcoming year and stay there.

“Yes, I can,’’ Hoiberg said, when asked whether he was equipped to coach Butler. “Absolutely I can.

“I’ve been in a lot of conversations with Jimmy. I went out and saw him out in L.A. Had great talks with him.

He was in back in Chicago last week, met with him on several occasions, and was in here in the gym when Jimmy was working out. I know he’s excited about things right now and about the

upcoming year, and obviously about the Olympic team that he’s about to start the training for.’’

Hoiberg wouldn’t get into the details of what he and Butler discussed on the West Coast visit, but seemed confident that it sunk in.

“We talked about a lot of things,’’ Hoiberg said. “I don’t want to get into the exact specifics that we talked about, but the biggest thing with our group is we need to play more consistent basketball next year. You go 7-1 against Toronto and Cleveland, top two teams in the East, and you go 17-13 against the West, and we find ourselves out of the playoffs. That can’t happen. We have to play much more consistent basketball. That was a big thing that I not only talked to Jimmy, but a lot of our players about.’’

The hope is Valentine – picked 14th overall in the first round on Thursday – is another guy that will make sure that won’t happen.

The 6-foot-6 former Spartan is

tough-minded and versatile. Two traits this Bulls team sorely needs.

“I mean you just gotta do what you gotta do,’’ Valentine said, when asked about his former college coach Tom Izzo saying that he’ll play through anything if it means winning. “Winning is key for me, and I hate letting my team down, so I want to play. I want to give it my all if I can go out there, no matter whatever happens. If I can play, I can play. The only thing that won’t let me play is if I really can’t.’’

So basically the antithesis of Rose.

As far as where he wants to play, well, the rook seems ready for anything asked of him.

“Pretty much anywhere one through three and guarding one through four,’’ Valentine said. “I like free-lancing and being able to do multiple things, playing multiple positions, so I can be versatile in that situation and make the most of what position I’m playing at that time.’’

Stephen Strasburg was scheduled to pitch for the Washington Nationals in Sunday’s game at Miller Park in Milwaukee.

However, Strasburg was suffering from back issues and the Nationals placed him on the disabled list before the game.

Wilmington graduate Tanner Roark was scheduled to pitch Monday’s game but was moved up to Sunday to fill in for Strasburg. All he did was throw seven shutout innings in a 3-2 victory that ended Washington’s seven-game losing streak. Roark allowed seven hits, struck out seven and walked one.

Brewers manager Crag Counsell said this to an mlb.com reporter about facing Roark rather than Strasburg: “This isn’t a break, as far as I’m concerned. This guy is pretty good.

He’s a challenge. He’s under the radar because (Max) Scherzer and Strasburg are big names, but this guy is a good starting pitcher.”

When you get that sort of praise from an opposing manager, it means a lot.

For the season, Roark is 7-5 with a 2.96 ERA. He has started 16 games and allowed 90 hits and 32 walks while striking out 89 in 1001/3 innings.

Sunday also brought a positive development for another local pitcher.

Right-hander Mike Foltynewicz (Minooka), who has been on the disabled list since June 4, began his rehab assignment at Triple-A Gwinnett. He

Kris Bryant hits 3 homers in Cubs win

The Associated Press CINCINNATI – Kris Bryant became the first major leaguer to hit three homers and two doubles in a game, and Jake Arrieta added a solo shot in the ballpark where he threw a no-hitter in April, leading the Cubs to an 11-8 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Monday night.

The Cubs pulled out of their 1-6 slide behind a tandem that’s had some historic moments in Cincinnati.

Arrieta (12-2) threw his second career no-hitter on April 21 during a 16-0 win over the Reds.

The reigning NL Cy Young Award winner became the league’s first 12-game winner despite his worst pitching performance of the season. Arrieta walked a season-high five batters in five innings, and four of them scored. The five runs allowed were his most since he gave up six during a 7-2 loss at Great American Ball Park on Aug. 28, 2014.

Adam Duvall had a two-run double in the first inning, Jay Bruce singled home a run, and Joey Votto hit a two-run homer off Arrieta.

The Cubs have the best record in the majors at 49-26, despite their slump last week, set up by a lack of clutch hitting and poor relief pitching. The bullpen gave up three runs and four hits Monday, including Votto’s second homer in the ninth inning.

The Cubs improved to 7-1 against the Reds this season and have won 10 of their last 11 vs. their NL Central rivals.

Lindros’ wait over as he headlines Hall of Fame class

Eric Lindros knew exactly what day and time the Hockey Hall of Fame would call. He was just hoping his phone would ring this time after six years of silence.

Rogie Vachon had given up hoping after 30-plus years of eligibility. And when his moment came, Sergei Makarov exclaimed, “Oh my gosh, the wait is over!”

The waiting ended for Lindros, Vachon and Makarov on Monday as they were elected as part of the class of 2016 along with the late coach and executive Pat Quinn.

With no first-time eligible players worthy of consideration, they were able to go from the longtime waiting room into the hall.

Because concussions and other injuries cut his career short, Lindros was passed over for the honor six previous times. But his Hart Trophy-winning season as NHL MVP with the Flyers in 1995, his 865 points in 760 games, and his overall dominance and international success ended up being too much to keep him out.

Lindros said he hasn’t stopped smiling since getting the call from

Hall of Fame chairman Lanny McDonald while driving down the highway in Ontario.

“It was six years and it was a bit of time, but I guess you could turn around and say I’m in the Hall forever going forward,” Lindros said. “I think there’s sometimes you get thinking back and wondering, ‘What if?’ I think when it’s all said and done, it’s an honor. It feels full circle.”

Lindros was a junior hockey star and the No. 1 pick of the Quebec Nordiques in 1991 but refused to sign, something he said Monday he didn’t regret. Sent to Philadelphia as part of one of the biggest trades in NHL history, Lindros became one of the best players of his era with an unusual blend of physicality and production. He led the Flyers to the 1997 Stanley Cup Final as part of the “Legion of Doom” line with John LeClair and Mikael Renberg.

Friction with teammates and management dotted Lindros’ career, and he never won the Stanley Cup. “It’s one thing you look back on,” Lindros said. “There’s a void there. I still have a lot to look back on and be thankful for being on

different teams.”

Lindros played for the New York Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs and Dallas Stars at the end of his career. He also won two world junior gold medals and Olympic gold in 2002 representing Canada in Salt Lake City.

Makarov was more than a point-a-game scorer for the Soviet national team as part of the famed KLM line with Vladimir Krutov and 2008 Hall of Fame inductee Igor Larionov. He won the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year with Calgary in 1991 and put up 384 points in 424 games with the Flames, San Jose Sharks and Stars, once Russian players were able to play in the NHL. “He had the fastest side-to-side movements,” McDonald said of Makarov. “You’d think you have him lined up and he’d (go by) and do it at top speed. He would never lose the puck.”

Vachon won the Vezina Trophy with the Canadiens in 1967-68 and was part of three Cup-champion teams in Montreal. He went on to play with the Los Angeles Kings, Detroit Red Wings and Boston Bruins and finished with 355 victories.

Organizers hope to attract community to fundraising event

CHANNAHON – In 2008, when she was 12, Emily Young was diagnosed with Friedreich’s ataxia, a genetic condition that causes progressive damage to the nervous system.

But it doesn’t keep Young, of Gibson City and now 20, from riding a recumbent bicycle and fundraising for a cure.

Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance hosts the nationwide rideATAXIA to raise money for research. Becky Young, Emily’s mother, said five annual rides are held throughout the country.

The Midwest ride, now in its fifth year, offers fully supported 4-, 12-, 27and 50-mile scenic cycling routes in Channahon, Morris and Minooka, Becky said.

“We looked around for an area that would be close to Chicago, yet have some country and scenery, and be a safe place for riders,” Becky said.

About 350 people participated last year, mostly people with Friedreich’s ataxia and their family and friends, Becky said. That included kids riding in pull carts and seniors age 65, she added.

This year, organizers are hoping for more community involvement.

“I think FARA is trying to stress that this is for people of all abilities,” Becky said. “We’ve actually had people push their rides through the 4-mile route so they can participate because they physically can’t do it. [At rideATAXIA] there are all kinds of bikes and all kinds of riders.”

Getting involved in FARA is a family affair. Emily’s father, Rick Young, is riding this year, as is her brother, Andy Young, who will pull his 2-yearold daughter in a cart, Becky said.

Becky has biked in past rides, but is stepping back this year to help run the event. In addition, Emily’s sister, Jamie Young, now works for FARA. Jamie’s title is rideATAXIA & Team FARA program coordinator, Becky said.

So far, Team Emily is the top fundraiser for the 2015 Midwest ride, having raised more than $11,000. Last year, the Midwest ride raised $80,000, Becky said. This year the goal is $85,000, according to the event website.

“As a family and a community, we’re trying to raise awareness and funds for research,” Becky said.

Becky recalled when Emily was diagnosed. She said Emily’s gait appeared different and thought Emily might have scoliosis. The family eventually ended up at Shriner’s Hospital for Children in Chicago, where Emily was quickly diagnosed with Friedreich’s ataxia through genetic testing.

“The doctors told us to come up without Emily just because it’s not easy news to hear,” Becky said. “So Rick and I made that trip alone.”

It was sobering news. Becky and Rick learned both parents must carry the gene for a child to be affected.

“They told us to take all our vacations now,” Becky said. “Because as time went on, that would become more difficult to do.”

Eighteen months after her diagnosis, Emily had her entire spine fused, a seven-hour procedure, Becky said. Her scoliosis – a symptom of Friedreich’s ataxia – had progressed, Becky said, and was pushing on her heart and lungs.

Balance also became an issue, although Emily kept her goal of remaining wheelchair-free until she graduated from high school, Becky said.

Emily also has mild heart disease and slowed speech, but fighting fatigue is her biggest challenge. Life expectancy with Friedreich’s ataxia varies.

Some people reach their 60s and others pass away in their 20s, Becky said.

Currently, Emily is enrolled in a clinical trial, as the disorder has no treatment or cure, only symptom management. Even if a cure is not possible, Becky hopes the trial might slow – or even halt – the disease’s progression.

Emily’s doctors also provided her with their cellphone numbers.

One is a neurologist at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. The other is a cardiologist in Indiana. Both are leading researchers in the effort to find treatment, Becky said.

Becky said Emily may call them at any time, day or night, if she has a question, problem or just needs someone to talk her through a symptom.

“They are amazing people,” Becky said.

Friedreich’s ataxia imposes limitations on Emily, but it doesn’t stop her.

This past year, Emily lived on campus; this spring, she earned an associate’s degree in psychology.

“Family resiliency – like when a crisis happens to a family, getting diagnosed with a disease or having a loss – is a dynamic that interests me,” Emily said.

Although Emily enjoyed biking before her diagnosis, she enjoys it more now because it’s a physical activity she can do often. A good day for Emily is any day the weather is nice and she can spend time with family and friends.

“No one really knows what their life is going to be like,” Emily said. “So every day just has to be a positive experience, working toward the future.”

Sawyer’s Heart donation comforts others at Silver Cross Hospital

NEW LENOX – To honor the memory of their son Sawyer, who would have been 6 years old on June 1, his parents donated gifts to Silver Cross Hospital that will provide comfort to other families who lose a child.

As part of their work with Angels of Hope Inc., Erik and Michelle Williams of Channahon recently donated to Silver Cross Hospital memory boxes for parents whose children die just before or after birth. Also, boxes were donated to families who suffered a late-term miscarriage.

The boxes, which include a hand/footprint mold kit, baby blanket, clothing and a bereavement booklet, were given in honor of the Williams’ son, Sawyer, who died six years ago when he was just 2 days old from a congenital heart defect, and these are things that they appreciated that were given to them to help cope with their loss.

Morris Hospital physicians recognized for excellent care

MORRIS – Four physicians from Morris Hospital and Healthcare Centers were awarded Five-Star Excellence Awards for their overall quality of care.

Dr. Ian Best, pediatrician; Dr. Janet Leon, rheumatologist; Dr. Rita Hart, pediatrician; and Dr. Scott Ciechna, family medicine physician, were recognized by Professional Research Consultants Inc., the firm that conducts patient experience surveys on behalf of Morris Hospital.

All four physicians ranked above the 90th percentile in PRC’s national client database as result of responses on the patient surveys in 2015.

Do something mind-numbing, such as organizing the sock drawer. The next thing you know, you will go back to bed and want to sleep.

It’s also important to stay on a regular sleep schedule. Go to bed at the same time every night. No matter how the night goes, rise the next day at the same time and remain awake until your planned sleep time. This helps to set your internal sleep clock and enhances your natural sleep drive.

What about sleeping pills? If it’s pain that’s making it hard to sleep, sleeping pills won’t help. When I was a young doctor, a patient taught me a lesson. She was in her late 80s. She told me her only problem was “the aches and pains as you get older.” She was the only patient in her 80s whom I wasn’t prescribing a single medicine for.

One day, she told me “the only pill I need, or will ever need, is my sleeping pill.” Since I wasn’t prescribing anything for her, I was puzzled. Then she explained: Her sleeping pill was one aspirin tablet an hour before bedtime.

Dear Dr. K: I have chronic pain from arthritis. Lately, it’s so bad I can’t get a good night’s sleep. What can I do?

Dear Reader: Chronic pain and insomnia are, unfortunately, a common combination. What’s more, chronic pain puts you in double jeopardy: First the pain robs you of restful sleep, then losing restorative sleep makes you more fatigued, which makes you more sensitive to pain.

Why does pain often seem worse at night? During the day, you pay attention to what’s going on around you. However, when you lie down to go to sleep, there are fewer things to distract you – just the pain.

I can sympathize. I had severe arthritis in my right hip that interfered with my sleep for years. It’s a common problem. There are millions of people like us.

Many pain specialists recommend a strategy called “relaxing distraction” to get to sleep. Relaxing distraction can come in the form of widely available audio recordings. Some teach basic rhythmic breathing meditation. Others focus on guided imagery, in which you imagine being in a calm, relaxing location.

Pain relievers, while essential for pain control, can be a double-edged sword.

That’s because some, including opioid pain relievers such as codeine, hydrocodone (Vicodin) and oxycodone (Oxycontin, Percocet), can disturb sleep – as well as create addiction.

East has to see that declarer has at least nine tricks ready to run, the spade finesse working if he needs it. Can the defense win the first five tricks?

Maybe. East must win with his heart ace and shift to the club two, the low card guaranteeing at least one honor in the suit. Here, West will win as cheaply as possible and return the club five to East’s ace. Then, a third club defeats the contract.
