Illinois and Michigan Canal Locks – Channahon The construction of the Illinois and Michigan Canal helped to extend the water highway that the Erie Canal created from New York to the Great Lakes in 1825. When it opened in 1848, the I&M Canal provided the last link that connected the eastern seaboard with the Mississippi River.

Canal boats could now navigate the Great Lakes from Buffalo to Chicago and then take the I&M Canal to LaSalle, follow the Illinois River to the Mississippi, and travel south to the Gulf of Mexico.

Construction of the canal began in 1836, under the direction of William Gooding.

The growth of Will County can be directly traced to the building of Illinois and Michigan Canal. Completed in 1848, and nearly one hundred miles long, the I&M Canal was the final link in a national plan to connect different regions of North American via waterways.

With the help of many foreign-born immigrants, the six-foot deep canal was dug through the northern part of Will County and connected the cities of Channahon and Joliet to the east and west sections of the canal.

Most of the locks and wooden gates constructed along the I&M Canal followed a common set of specifications and were based on a ten-foot lift. Variations in the design of the locks did exist along the route such as Lock #1 and #2 in Lockport.

To assure a ten-foot lift lock, the I&M Canal locks required an 18-foot-wall height and a foundation that was over 11 feet thick. The typical lock chamber measured 110 feet long by 18 feet wide and would accommodate canal boats that were constructed to meet the dimensions.

The Will County towns of Joliet, Lockport and Channahon were three towns which prospered in the nineteenth century because of the transportation network which tied the county with Chicago and the East coast markets.

When the canal opened, trade that was once channeled through St. Louis was now directed to Chicago. Over

Timmy’s Hugs and Hearts Garden Walk supports pediatric hospice program

Shaw Media correspondent JOLIET – Master gardeners to novice gardeners toured 11 unique gardens in Joliet and surrounding areas Saturday – all to help children faced with terminal illness.

The 10th annual Timmy’s Hugs and Hearts Garden Walk to support the Joliet Area Community Hospice pediatric palliative care and hospice programs took full swing at 9 a.m.

More than 300 people bought tickets and were welcomed into private homes in Crest Hill, Joliet, Plainfield and Shorewood to admire, socialize and take away tips for their own gardens.

“I’m a member of the Joliet Area Garden Club, so I love to come out here and get ideas, but it mostly makes me jealous,” Lockport resident Carrie Rock said. “This was a great fundraiser for a good cause and it’s a great way to spend my day.”

Jackie Bersano, senior director of development and communications for Joliet Area Community Hospice, said that last year the walk raised $11,000 between ticket sales and donated raffle baskets.

This year, Bersano hopes to bring in $12,000 for the cause, as well as raise awareness of the pediatric and other programs at the facility.

“And people get to come out and see the hospice home,” Bersano said.

Pediatric palliative care is for children newborn to age 21 years with a life threatening illness, Bersano said.

The program helps the family with symptom management and care, and offers support in nursing, social work and spiritual needs.

Each year, around nine to 13 gardens are on the walk, with new gardens each year, except for the Betsy and John Sullivan garden in Plainfield, who founded this event in honor of their grandson Timmy Davis of Channahon.

Timmy passed away in 2012.

“Our grandson Timmy was in hospice care [at Joliet Community Hospice] for 11 years. We had done garden walks every year so we thought, why don’t we do a garden walk for hospice?” Betsy Sullivan said. “We asked Timmy’s nurse and

Joliet plans new job for dog complaints

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The city is moving forward with plans to hire a part-time employee to deal with dog problems.

The Joliet City Council Public Safety Committee last week recommended that the city create the position of part-time animal code enforcement officer to work out of the mayor’s office.

Mayor Bob O’Dekirk has been talking for months about the possibility of hiring such an officer, mentioning it in the State of the City speeches early in the year.

“I think a lot of people would welcome it,” O’Dekirk said.

He said the position was suggested to him as the city was looking for ways to improve its handling of vicious dog complaints.

Earlier this year, the city enacted a new vicious dog ordinance and

formed a new intergovernmental agreement with Joliet Township Animal Control.

The township agency handles dog complaints in Joliet.

But people often make their first calls to Joliet police.

Also, the city administers its animal ordinances, holding hearings and issuing penalties to violators.

O’Dekirk said the animal code enforcement officer would provide “another level of enforcement.”

Councilman John Gerl, chairman of the Public Safety Committee, said the committee has instructed city staff to create the position, which would be appointed by the mayor.

“We’ve had a lot of complaints of late about vicious dogs and dogs left unattended,” Gerl said. “Our police department doesn’t really have the time or resource to devote to this.

CED to celebrate 35th anniversary at Rialto Theatre with Capitol Steps

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Will County Center for Economic Development will celebrate its 35th anniversary Oct. 6 at the Rialto Square Theatre in Joliet.

The event will include a performance by the Capitol Steps, a comedy troupe that satirizes politics in Washington and beyond in songs and skits.

CED Chief Executive Officer John Greuling described the celebration while delivering an economic development report last week at the organization’s Eye Opener breakfast.

Greuling noted that the Capitol Steps will perform for the event just a month before the November election, which should be a busy season for the troupe.

“The fact that we got them a month before the national election is a win for us,” he said.

The CED later put out a news release about the event, noting that the Rialto was chosen for the cele-

bration “because of its contribution to the region’s economy.”

“We couldn’t imagine a more fitting venue for the CED’s 35th anniversary celebration,” Scott Paddock, CED board chairman and president of Chicagoland Speedway, said in the news release.

Tickets for the event will go on sale in August.

The CED was formed in 1981 during the Rust Belt recession that had devastated the local economy.

Will County unemployment at the time was nearly 20 percent, Greuling said at the Eye Opener breakfast.

State Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, also at the event, noted unemployment in Joliet at the time had reached 26 percent.

McGuire presented a resolution from the state legislature honoring the CED.

Each garden along the walk lent its own unique spin with butterfly gardens, backyard oasis, flower gardens, vegetable gardens, tree houses, ponds, intricately manicured bushes, modern gardening procedures as well as gardens filled with family heirlooms.

“This garden was filled with mementos from my childhood,” garden owner Christine Hetfleisch of Shorewood said. “Almost everything in this garden was given to us by family, which remind me of my mom and we have a tree planted in memory of my husband’s father.”

The event ended at 4 p.m. when the last photosand notes were taken.

Sue Middleton of Aurora summed up her enjoyment of the event: “My favorite part was to see how people used what God created.”

Community members can turn tragedies into hope Channahon resident Dawn Breen said she found out just how giving her community is when she signed up a team for the second annual Madison Cup kickball tournament.

Madison Angus was just 18 when she died Memorial Day weekend 2014 in a single-vehicle crash coming home from work. To celebrate her life, Eileen and Scott Angus and family started the Madison C. Angus foundation, with proceeds from various events going to help people in the community through educational scholarships and others who have been touched by the illness or death of a child.

This story starts way before the kickball tournament even happened.

Dawn saw a post on Facebook that Minooka Bible Church was looking for a used gown for a fairy tale princess dress to be used by Royal Family Kids, an organization that holds life-changing camps and provides mentoring for

Dawn then shared the post on her own timeline. A response came from Jess Smith, wife of Minooka High School teacher and coach Mark Smith; Mark has since been diagnosed with brain cancer. At the time Jess was still pregnant with the couple’s second daughter, and Mark was in and out of hospitals with what was believed to be a benign brain tumor. Jess offered her own prom gown to Royal Family Kids. “[Jess] was knee-deep in her own stuff and she took the time to respond to the Facebook post,” said Dawn. “Even with her own troubles, she was still giving back.”

When tournament time came, Dawn proposed that their team, the Toe-Bama’s – toe for kickball and Bama because Madison had planned to attend the University of Alabama – give half of any winnings to help Jess and Mark Smith and the other half back to the Angus family. Everyone agreed.

Unfortunately, the team didn’t win the tournament – but they did get $250 for the best-dressed baseball costume.

When team members offered the money to Eileen Angus, she wouldn’t accept. Instead she matched the team’s winnings so that $500 could go to the Smith family.

“While trying to make money for her own cause, [Eileen’s] giving money to others,” Dawn said. “Mrs. Angus was so kind to offer to give it back.”

There are even more little details to the story. Like the fact that Dawn collected over a dozen bicycles for Royal Family Kids after Minooka Bible

Church posted it on Facebook. And all the people who responded to Dawn’s re-posting and donated a bike for a foster child in need. Then there are all the other people who made up teams for the Madison Cup, team sponsors and those who attended to help raise money for the Madison Angus Foundation.

One member on the Toe-Bamas team is herself a survivor of a brain tumor.

Nearly 1 in 3 on Medicare got abused opioids

CHICAGO – Nearly 12 million Medicare beneficiaries received at least one prescription for an opioid painkiller last year at a cost of $4.1 billion, according to a federal report that shows how common the addictive drugs are in many older Americans’ medicine cabinets.

With an overdose epidemic worsening, nearly one-third of Medicare beneficiaries received at least one prescription for commonly abused opioids such as OxyContin and fentanyl in 2015.

Those who did received an average of five such prescriptions or refills, according to the report from the Office of Inspector General for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

“We are concerned about the high spending and the number of people receiving opioids,” said Miriam Anderson, who led the study, which was released Wednesday. “This raises concerns about abuse. This is a serious problem facing our country.”

Among all ages, there were nearly 19,000 fatal overdoses on prescription opioids in 2014, which was the most on record and the last year for which that data set was available.

“It’s not just a young person’s problem,” Blow said. Overdose risk for older Americans is heightened by medication interactions and alcohol. Addiction is also a risk and doctors should help patients consider alternatives for chronic pain, such as meditation, yoga, walking and weight loss, which allow patients to minimize opioid use.

there were about 40 million prescriptions for these drugs last year,” she said. “That’s enough to give one to every Medicare beneficiary in the country.”

In February testimony on opioid use among seniors to Congress, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Deputy Administrator Sean Cavanaugh said the agency “is aware of potential fraud at the prescriber and pharmacy levels through ‘pill mill’ schemes.”

Medicare is reviewing the report closely, spokesman Aaron Albright said. The agency has had a monitoring system since 2013 that provides quarterly reports to Part D plan sponsors on high-risk beneficiaries who may be overusing commonly abused drugs.

The system flagged 15,651 beneficiaries last year as potential problem drug users. In 2017, the federal government will bar payment for prescriptions written by doctors who are not enrolled in Medicare.

“Medicare Part D spending on opioids, in general, is decreasing as a percent of total Part D spending, from 3.2 percent in 2014 to 3.0 percent in 2015,” Albright said. The agency “takes seriously our responsibility to ensure that beneficiaries have access to the drugs they need with appropriate safeguards to prevent abuse.”

NAPERVILLE (AP) – Never again shall a Naperville military veteran be laid to rest without full military honors.

That’s the hope of 69-year-old Vietnam veteran Jim Oftedal and several members of the city’s VFW and American Legion posts who, together, have formed the Naperville Judd Kendall VFW and American Legion Post 43 Honor Guard.

All Naperville veterans, whose families request it, can have full military honors at their funeral, including a three-round volley and flag presentation.

Oftedal said he began questioning why Naperville didn’t have such an option for veterans about a year ago after attending a service that featured such honors for his father-in-law, who was a World War II bomber pilot.

“It was in November. The snow was flying and it was just an awesome experience to be a part of and have that for the deceased veteran,” Oftedal said. “I brought the idea to my quartermaster at the VFW and then I was assigned to form a group here.”

The honor guard, as it stands now, has 12 members, 10 riflemen to fire the a three-round volley, a bugler and a trumpeter. Oftedal commands the ceremony and is responsible for delivering the flag and three casings, each representing a volley, to the fallen veteran’s family.

The group was trained last fall by a representative for the Department of Defense before being certified by the department last October.

Training included mastering the precise movements of a military burial service, execution, what to say and how to fold the flag.

“Everything has to be perfect, from the angles of arms while saluting to our marching, to the folding of the flag.

Carol Brown helped many people in different ways

SHOREWOOD – After Carol Brown of Shorewood died, her friend, Eve Lee, assembled a scrapbook for Carol’s family of all the tributes people sent.

Carol would have been stunned.

That’s because Carol had no idea the significant impact she made on people, Eve, of Antioch, said. Carol was direct, honest, funny and had a gift of making people feel at ease.

In short, Eve said, Carol was a true friend.

“She was an extraordinary person,” Eve said. “She was the most forgiving and humble individual you will ever meet.”

Carol met Eve after Carol’s mother died. Eve helps clients with personal growth and leadership skills, and to work through post-traumatic stress disorder through equine-facilitated learning, Eve said.

For several years, Carol attended every workshop Eve offered. Carol eventually became Eve’s assistant, then her friend and finally a valued member of Eve’s extended family,

Eve said.

Eventually, Carol began spending winters in Tucson, Arizona, Eve said, in the same RV park that Eve stayed in. And then Carol took up photography.

Carol especially liked taking pictures of animals, said Carol’s sister, Jacqueline Reposh, of Texas, but she also shot a variety of subjects through periodic field trips with an Arizona photography club.

“She took pictures Carol Brown of an Indian festival out there and did some really good ones,” Jacqueline said.

Floss Smith of Joliet met Carol through a fellow crafter around 2002.

Floss and Carol worked together to make and sell leather products – wallets, checkbook covers, key fobs, bell straps – and a variety of parrot toys.

In that environment, their friendship blossomed.

Seven years ago, Floss and Carol also became co-owners of Christmas At Our House, a 34-year-old craft show run by various people over the years, Floss said. It’s currently held

at the Joliet Elks Lodge 296 during the third weekend in October. Part of the proceeds are donated to charity, Floss said.

Last October when Carol was battling colon cancer, she still worked part of the show.

Carol helped with setup, brought doughnuts and made coffee, Floss said. Carol had a big heart, but she was also tons of fun.

“She had a sarcastic sense of humor,” Floss said. “She could come up with one-liners where all of a sudden you’d turn around and go, ‘What?’”

Carol graduated in 1962 from St. Francis Academy and worked for Caterpillar Inc. until she retired in 2004. She never married, but she took care of her parents, her dogs, and had two nieces whom she dearly loved, Jacqueline said.

Even one of Floss’ parrots adored Carol, Floss said.

After she retired, Carol volunteered at the Blessing Table soup kitchen at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Joliet. She also took a mission trip to Bolivia, Carol’s first time out of the country and her first experience with construction work.

But police failed to retrieve vital evidence -- the dash cam video system onboard the

school bus – that changed the outcome, said Wierzbicki, of Horwitz, Horwitz & Associates, which has offices in Chicago and Joliet.

Wierzbicki, who pursued the case against the bus company, deals with semi-truck and commercial truck accidents, and is familiar with the technology used in commercial motor vehicles such as school buses and semi-tractor trailers.

He obtained video and electronic data from the bus on-board system, including critical information such as the speed and a recorded view of the driver. This information indicated the driver was over the speed limit, not under, and clearly was not scanning the road and keeping a proper lookout.

“Thankfully, we were able to recover evidence that the police were unaware of to demonstrate the bus company’s fault,” he said, “and provide a measure of closure and compensation to a family we were privileged to represent.”

“She never built anything other than a tree house when we were kids,” Jacqueline said.

But Carol was a “tough lady” who endeared herself to the team.

“She was the kind if you had to dig this or move this or lay the cement blocks, she was there building it,” Jacqueline said.

Carol spent her last couple months at Eve’s house, where she could enjoy the peaceful scenery and Eve’s horses. A suncatcher of a bear Carol made hung in her window, the last piece Carol created, Jacqueline said.

Loved ones planned a party for Carol’s birthday May 22, but Carol died May 10 at the age of 71.

45 people gathered as planned on May 22 – with the Arizona friends Skyping in – to celebrate Carol’s life, Eve said.

That included a slide show of Carol’s photographs set to music.

“She had an eye that was incredible,” Eve said.

Former Temple hoops star Hal Lear dies at 81 The ASSOCIATED PRESS WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – Hal Lear, the sweet-shooting guard who starred for the Temple Owls in the 1950s and still holds the school record for points in a season, has died.

He was 81.

Lear died at his home Saturday in White Plains, New York, from a recurrence of prostate cancer and the effects of spinal stenosis, according to his wife, Maggie. He had been retired after a 30-year career at Albert Einstein School of Medicine as an executive administrator of the Department of Psychiatry.

Lear, who played prep ball at Philadelphia’s Overbrook High School, scored a school-record 745 points as a senior in the 1955-56 season, and his scoring average of 24.0 that year ranks fourth in Temple history.

Lear, Mark Macon and Guy Rodgers are the only Temple players to average 20 or more points in two seasons.

“Hal Lear was not only one of the greatest players, but one of the greatest people in Temple basketball history,” Temple men’s basketball coach Fran Dunphy said. “He personified class in every way. A great man has left us.”

A first-team NABC All-District honoree as a senior, Lear helped lead the Owls to a 27-4 record and the program’s first trip to the NCAA Final Four, and capped his college career with a pair of superlative performances.

He scored 32 points in an 83-76 loss to Iowa in the national semifinals, then followed with a then-NCAA Tournament record 48 points in a 90-81 win over SMU in the third-place game as Temple ended its season ranked 13th

Lear was named Final Four most valuable player, one of only five players to earn the honor without competing in the title game.

The others are Wilt Chamberlain (Kansas, 1957), Art Heyman (Duke, 1963), Bill Bradley (Princeton, 1965) and Jerry Chambers (Utah, 1966).

Lear, whose No. 6 at Temple was retired three years ago, also was part of arguably the biggest win in Temple history, a 73-61 victory at No. 2 Kentucky in December 1955.

He had 19 points to help spoil Kentucky’s home opener and hand the Wildcats only their second home loss in a dozen years.

For his career, Lear scored 1,472 points over 79 games, an 18.6 scoring average.

Lear was selected by the Philadelphia Warriors in the 1956 NBA draft.

After a brief stint with the Warriors, he went on to a nine-year career in the Eastern League and was named to the league’s All-Time team.

Lear is survived by his wife, Maggie O’Keefe Lear, nine children, 21 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

No service is planned, the family said.

The Associated Press NEW YORK – Michael Herr, the author and Oscar-nominated screenplay writer who viscerally documented the ravages of the Vietnam War through his classic nonfiction novel “Dispatches” and through such films as “Apocalypse Now” and “Full Metal Jacket,” died after a long illness.

He was 76.

His death Thursday in an upstate New York hospital was confirmed by publisher Alfred A. Knopf, which released “Dispatches” in 1977, two years after the U.S. left Vietnam.

A native of Syracuse, New York, with a knack for eavesdropping and a reverence for Ernest Hemingway, Herr was part of the New Journalism wave that included Tom Wolfe, Truman Capote and Norman Mailer and advocated applying literary style and techniques to traditional reporting.

“Dispatches” is often ranked with Tim O’Brien’s novel “The Things They Carried,” Neil Sheehan’s “A Bright Shining Lie” and Stanley Karnow’s “Vietnam: A History” as essential reading about the war.

“If you think you don’t want to read any more about Vietnam, you are wrong,” critic John Leonard of The New York Times wrote when “Dispatches” came out. “ ‘Dispatches’ is beyond politics, beyond rhetoric, beyond ‘pacification’ and body counts and the ‘psychotic vaudeville’ of Saigon press briefings.

Herr spent much of his 20s traveling and working for magazines before convincing Esquire magazine editor Harold Hayes, in 1967, to let him travel to Vietnam and write a monthly column. He ended up staying more than a year, producing few columns at the time, but gathering the material for what became “Dispatches,” profane, impassioned and knowing reports that helped capture a generation’s sense of outrage and disillusion.

“I keep thinking about all the kids who got wiped out by 17 years of war movies before coming to Vietnam and getting wiped out for good,” he wrote in a chapter prefaced with lyrics from a Bob Dylan song.

“You don’t know what a media freak is until you’ve seen the way a few of these grunts would run around during a fight when they knew there was a television crew nearby; they were actually making war movies in their heads, doing little guys and glory Leatherneck tap dances under fire, getting their pimples shot for the networks.”

Although he loved writing and storytelling, and as an undergraduate at Syracuse University contributed to a magazine edited by Joyce Carol Oates, Herr only published a handful of books.

He struggled with depression before “Dispatches” and found the fame from his acclaimed Vietnam work disorienting. He moved to London, and for years traveled little and gave few interviews.

EDINBURG – As a first-year superintendent in the Edinburg schools, Fred Lamkey got an education he didn’t expect: traveling Route 29, which in various spots has been torn up for 15 years.

During his 20-mile school-day commute from Riverton, Lamkey sees the hazards of an endless construction project – highway lanes swerving and merging, constant and sometimes-confusing orange road-work signs and the impatience that goes with driving a two-lane road in a four-lane world.

“I’ve seen some people make some pretty dicey moves trying to get around one car to make progress,” Lamkey said.

If political infighting over a state budget continues back up the road in Springfield, the precarious state of the highway and many others will continue indefinitely.

The Illinois Department of Transportation warns that if there’s no budget agreement by the July 1 start of the fiscal year, not only will planned projects not start, but ongoing jobs representing a $2 billion investment will be shut down. That, officials said, means continued commuting headaches, safe-

Chicago pride parade pays tribute to Orlando victims

CHICAGO – Chicago’s 47th pride parade has taken place with the same enthusiasm of previous years despite tributes everywhere to victims of the Orlando nightclub attack two weeks.

Nearly 1 million spectators had been expected at Sunday’s event, and many marchers found ways to remember the 49 who died.

Two carried a banner saying, “Chicago-Orlando, In Solidarity.” Others sported T-shirts with the hashtag, “#WeAreOrlando.” Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel wore a shirt that read,

Only $1 million has been spent of an authorized $33 million reconstruction of Route 34 from Yorkville to Oswego.

In Christian County, residents have wanted Route 29 widened to four lanes for decades.

The first-term Republican governor and Democrats who control the General Assembly have yet to agree to a budget deal, dating back a year. Road construction continued only because Gov. Bruce Rauner signed a separate infrastructure spending bill the Legislature sent him.

That’s not the case now. The two sides have yet to find common ground on anything, with Rauner insisting on business-friendly changes in law and political modifications such as officeholder term limits before agreeing to a budget, while Democrats said a mul-

Popular Chicago trail to be resurfaced over summer

CHICAGO – The city of Chicago is making improvements to a popular trail that runs along the Lake Michigan shoreline.

A statement from the mayor’s office said the improvements will include resurfacing and paving. It said seven miles of what is known as the Chicago Lakefront Trail will be resur-

IDOT spokesman Guy Tridgell said officials have been studying the cost of mothballing projects, but Blankenhorn said it would cost “tens of millions of dollars in avoidable costs just to ensure our work zones are safe” while idle. And there are logistics and other unknowns – for instance, whether a contractor that started the work is available to finish it when the money finally arrives.

“Stopping and starting projects is not as easy as flipping a switch,” Blankenhorn said.

Illinois police dog honored with funeral procession

TROY – A police dog that spent more than six years on

the job at a Metro East police department has been honored with a funeral procession after health problems led his owners to have him euthanized.

The Belleville News-Democrat reported that Jac was 14 when Troy police Detective Mike Raymond and his family decided the dog’s deteriorating health meant he should be put down. The German shepherd could no longer easily walk.

Jac was euthanized Friday, and a number of officers and their dogs turned out for a procession between the veterinary clinic and a funeral home. The family had Jac cremated.

Jac was with the department in Pontoon Beach, 15 miles west of Troy until 2009.

Raymond said his young son and Jac had become “best friends.”

LONDON – Britain’s shocking decision to remove itself from the European Union brought more political turmoil Sunday as Scotland’s leader threatened to block the move and the opposition Labour Party’s leader faced a coup attempt from his own legislators.

The sense of unease spread as European leaders stepped up the pressure on Britain to begin its complex exit from the 28-nation EU immediately, rather than wait several months as British Prime Minister David Cameron prefers.

The vote to leave sent the pound and global stock markets plunging. Britain’s Treasury said finance minister George Osborne would make an early morning statement Monday “to provide reassurance about financial and economic stability” before the London Stock Exchange reopens.

The leaders of the successful campaign to leave the EU stayed largely out of the public eye, as opponents accused them of lacking a plan to calm the crisis the result has triggered. In his first statement since Friday morning, “leave” leader and former London Mayor Boris Johnson used his column in the Daily Telegraph newspaper to urge unity and say “the negative consequences (of the vote) are being wildly overdone.”

He said Britain would forge “a new and better relationship with the EU – based on free trade and partnership, rather than a federal system.”

The vote, however, risks causing a political schism in the United Kingdom. Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said she would “consider” advising the Scottish Parliament to try to use its power to prevent Britain from actually leaving the EU. She said Scottish lawmakers might be able to derail the move by withholding “legislative consent” for a British exit, or Brexit.

“If the Scottish Parliament was judging this on the basis of what’s right for Scotland, then the option of saying ‘We’re not going to vote for something that is against Scotland’s interests,’ of course, that is on the table,” she said of the possibility of withholding consent.

Sturgeon said she believes Scotland’s approval is required for the move, but conceded the British government would likely take “a very different view.”

Thursday’s U.K.-wide vote to leave the EU was very unpopular in Scotland, where 62 percent cast ballots to stay, and Sturgeon said she is studying ways to keep Scotland part of the EU bloc.

Northern Ireland Secretary Theresa Villiers, Cameron’s lead official in Belfast, played down the suggestion that the Scottish Parliament or the Northern Ireland Assembly had the standing to prevent a British departure from the EU. She said decision-making power resides solely in the British Parliament, which is expected to abide by the results of the referendum, which showed 52 percent of British voters wanted out.

“In the weeks and months ahead, we will be working with both the Scottish government and the Northern Ireland executive on all these matters,” she told BBC. “But ultimately it is (the British) Parliament’s decision.”

GRABBING THE LEAD Slammers edge Lake Erie to move into first place in East Division

cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Sunday’s series finale between Lake Erie and Joliet had all of the makings of a good pitchers duel.

The Crushers started Steve Hagen, who owned a league-best 1.36 ERA, and the Slammers countered with last week’s Frontier League Pitcher of the Week, Kaleb Ort. While the anticipated showdown unfolded between the starters, the difference in the game wasn’t determined by them but, rather, by which team

executed better down the stretch and which bullpen outperformed the other.

Joliet was able to prevail on both of those counts, capturing a 3-2 Frontier League victory over Lake Erie at Silver Cross Field to continue its streak of not dropping a series since early June.

And as a bonus, the Slammers (2316) took over the top spot in their division for the first time this late in the season since their 2011 championship year. Windy City dropped a 12-6 decision to Traverse City to fall a half-game behind Joliet in the East Division standings.

Although the anticipated pitchers duel certainly developed and both starters threw well enough to collect victories, each was forced to settle for a no-decision.

Instead, Slammers relievers Tyler Levine (2-0) and Brent Choban (second save) didn’t allow a hit in two innings.

And in the eighth inning, Charlie White (2 for 4) led off with a double and scored the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by Carter Bell (two RBIs).

“It was a close game, and we found a way to get on and make some things happen, and we got the job done,”

Slammers manager Jeff Isom said.

“Our bullpen wasn’t picture perfect, but they made the pitches when they needed to. We’d been used to winning big, lopsided wins. So when you get one of these games that’s a nail-biter, it’s good to see that we didn’t back down and continued to make pitches, and they weren’t nervous out there by any means.

What Ryan Louthan accomplished this summer has not happened often, however.

Louthan won the “King of Swat” home run derby competition at Dreams Park. A student at St. Paul the Apostle School in Joliet, he competed against more than 100 players from around the United States. He plays for the Plainfield Raiders 12-under team.

We’ve got three guys who hit three, four and five, and they’re in the top in the league in RBIs. And now we add Rock Shoulders, a professional hitter, into the mix, and that just makes it even more difficult on other teams.”

After Ort allowed two runs and four hits while striking out 13 in seven innings and Hagen yielded two runs and eight hits in 62⁄3 innings, the score was tied at 2 going into the bottom of the seventh.

An inning later, Joliet moved in front for good when White led off with a double past the center fielder and then took third on a wild pitch. After the Crushers chose to intentionally walk league home run and RBI leader Boo Vazquez, Bell – the No. 2 man in RBIs – hit a sacrifice fly to center to drive in his 37th run of the season to make it a 3-2 game.

“I went up there looking for a fastball over the middle of the plate, and I got it,” White said. “I put a good swing on it, and luckily it found a gap. So I was happy that I stuck with my approach and we were able to get a run there.

We’re a tight group, and we’re playing really loose, and everyone is having fun. There’s no pressure, so everyone is trying to have quality at-bats and play good defense and see what happens.

was nice for Kaleb and the bullpen to keep us in the game. We kept grinding it out and had some timely hits at the end, so that was a good way to end the week. Every night, it seems like there’s a new hero, whether it’s on the mound, in the field playing defense or at the plate. We’ve got a really good team; and if we’re getting timely hitting, good defense and quality starts from our pitching staff, we can be tough to beat.”

The Slammers scored a run in the

Joliet picked up another run in the second inning when Joe Staley (2 for 3) got a two-out infield single, then Phil Bates tripled to right. The Crushers argued that the throw home beat Staley, but the home plate umpire saw things differently.

Lake Erie (17-20) scored in the fourth

inning when Eric Grabe hit a two-out triple, then Bryan De La Rosa slapped a single past first base. It evened the score in the seventh when Scott Carcaise sent a shot to right center that just made it over the fence to force a 2-all tie.

The Slammers, who have won 10 of their last 12 at home, travel to River City for a three-game series starting Tuesday before hosting Windy City over the weekend.

DRC Pony title goes to Troy Titans Blue

Shaw Media correspondent CREST HILL – In 2015, the Troy Titans Blue Pony League team won three games under coach Terry Gough.

This season, Gough’s 13/14-yearolds won the DuPage River Conference regular season, winning six times more than in 2015.

The regular-season champs took an 18-6 record into the DRC Tournament last week. On Thursday night, they ousted the Troy Titans Black, 12-6. In Friday night’s semifinals, the Titans rolled past Belmont, 5-1, behind the five-hit pitching of DRC Tournament MVP Jake Maroncelli.

In Saturday night’s title game at Joe Marshall Field, the Titans (21-6) disposed of the tournament Cinderella from Channahon, 11-2, behind AllDRC pitcher Nick Gough and Ernesto Ramirez.

The turnaround was complete.

“This sure feels a lot better than last year,” Gough said. “I am so proud of what the kids have accomplished this season. What a turnaround season. It was equally pleasing for me to have my son, Nick, on the mound for us in this championship season.”

Channahon (10-21-1) had ousted regular-season second-place Crest Hill Sports Huddle (19-11) – Marshall’s team – 6-3, Tuesday. In the semifinals, playing with eight players because of All-DRC pitcher Dalton Pickett’s ejection, the darlings of the tournament roughed up Minooka, 15-5.

Cinderella was alive and well as the championship game moved to the bottom of the third inning tied at 1. Troy’s Noah Johnson was hit by a pitch by Pickett. Leadoff man and AllDRC pick Blake Piesecki, who went 3 for 4 and scored three runs, singled.

All-DRC selection Brent Bosak walked to load the bases. That was the end of the game for Pickett.

Nick Gough, who went 3 for 3, scored twice and drove in two, greeted Channahon reliever Brendan Bisbee with his second RBI single to left for a 2-1 Troy lead. After one out, the bases remained loaded for Ramirez, who was All-DRC. “My only thought when I went to the plate with the bases loaded was to make contact,” Ramirez said.

Contact, indeed. He sent a high drive into the Crest Hill night, soaring over the left-field fence for a grand slam homer and a 6-1 Troy lead.

“It felt great to see the ball go over the left field fence for the grand slam,” Ramirez added.

Channahon scored a run to get within 6-2 in the top of the fourth. Troy picked up five unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth as the clock struck midnight on the feisty Channahon squad.

Piesecki scored his third run of the game, and Nick Gough had his third consecutive hit of the game in the inning. Catcher Sean Pharo’s RBI double highlighted the rally.

“We really went out and made a

huge statement by going from the bottom to the top in one year,” Piesecki said. “My job as a leadoff man is to get on any way I can – by hits, errors, any way I can to get us going.”

Meanwhile, Gough was strong on the mound. He threw a complete-game gem, allowing two runs and seven hits while striking out 10.

“It was great to win the championship,” Nick Gough said. “I pitched well tonight, and my fastball was my best

pitch. The majority of my 10 strikeouts came on that pitch. It felt good to get the three hits and two RBIs that helped us win.”

For Channahon, its run to the championship game will not be soon forgotten. For the second year in a row, Channahon has had a team in the DRC championship game. Last season, a squad from Channahon fell to Whiteford, 6-5, in eight innings.

“I’m so proud of the run we made,” Channahon coach Jason Bisbee said.

“The kids played well in all phases of the game. We return almost everyone in 2017. I am really looking forward to how good we can be.”

Brendan Bisbee led Channahon at the plate. He was on base three times with a double, single and hit batsman.

He scored once.

“We practiced today, and I really was feeling it at the plate,” Bisbee said.

“It was great to hit well for us, but I’m not happy that we lost the game.”

Troy took home a number of trophies. Besides Maroncelli’s MVP award, the Titans claimed the championship trophy and the traveling trophy that honors the DRC team with the best overall record.

“I was totally shocked when I heard my name called for the MVP award,” Maroncelli said. “I thought all my teammates were equally as deserving.

It’s a great honor. We just changed our whole team around this year. It was great to achieve what we accomplished this season.”

In the third-place game, Belmont (17-13) scored an 11-8 win over Minooka (18-10).

Fernandez fans 13, Marlins take series from Cubs

The Associated Press MIAMI – When Jose Fernandez reached second base with a standup double, he looked to his dugout, pulled up his right sleeve and flexed his biceps.

He showed some muscle on the mound, too, and his teammates were no pushovers either against the Cubs.

Fernandez allowed one run in seven innings and struck out 13 to help Miami win the series finale Sunday, 6-1. The Marlins took three of four games from the faltering, injury-depleted Cubs.

“They’ve got a bunch of talent,” Fernandez said. “They’re a very tough team to beat, and that says a lot about our team and how bad we want it – not caring what your record is, we’re going to try to beat you.”

The Marlins went 7-3 on their homestand. At 41-35, they’re six games above .500 for the first time since June 2012, their first season in Marlins Park.

Miami outscored the Cubs, 23-14.

“They’re a banged-up club, but we played well,” manager Don Mattingly said. “I don’t think this in our minds is a need to prove anything; I think our

guys already believe we can play with anybody. These guys believe in themselves that we can be a club that can contend.”

The Cubs went 1-6 for the week, but they still have baseball’s best record.

“It’s like a fighter that cut a little bit – you have to keep going,” manager Joe Maddon said.

“We better call in reinforcements and call that panic button,” first baseman Anthony Rizzo said facetiously.

“We’ve put ourselves in a good position

to go through these stretches. I’m not saying it’s OK. I’m not saying it’s fun.

But it’s a long season.”

Facing Fernandez (10-3) can make for a long day, especially at Marlins Park, where he improved his career record to 24-1 with a 1.48 ERA. The right-hander has been pretty good everywhere else, too. This year he has a 2.28 ERA and 138 strikeouts.

And against the Cubs, Mattingly sensed an extra edge from his ace.

“Jose looked early on like he was a

little bit of a mission to show that club over there what kind of pitcher he was,” Mattingly said. “He had a really good fastball today. He was able to beat a lot of guys with that, which sets up his other pitches.”

Fernandez’s top speed on the scoreboard radar gun was 101 mph in the fifth inning, when he struck out the side.

Giancarlo Stanton doubled and scored the go-ahead run in the sixth, and Martin Prado hit a three-run double in the ninth. Brian Ellington completed a five-hitter.

Jason Hammel (7-4) allowed two runs in six innings, and the Cubs lost his fourth start in a row even though he pitched out of several jams.

Miami was 0 for 10 with runners in scoring position before Christian Yelich singled home an insurance run in the eighth. That run was unearned because of a throwing error by third baseman Kris Bryant.

A replay reversal put the Marlins ahead to stay, 2-1, in the sixth. With runners at the corners and one out, the Cubs appeared to turn a 5-4-3 double play, but a review determined Adeiny Hechavarria beat the throw to first.

CHICAGO – Pitching on a hot, muggy afternoon against one of the majors’ best lineups, Chris Sale made it look easy.

Sale tossed eight innings of two-run ball to become the majors’ first 13-game winner, and the White Sox beat the Toronto Blue Jays, 5-2, Sunday.

“When you get into a groove, you just try to ride it out as best you can,” Sale said. “It was nice to get some quick outs and just try to roll with it.”

Sale (13-2) allowed five hits, struck out seven and walked two in his fourth straight victory. The 6-foot-6 lefthander matched his win total from all of 2015 when he was 13-11.

Sale was working on a shutout before Troy Tulowitzki homered down the left-field line with one out in the eighth. After Kevin Pillar struck out, Junior Lake made it 4-2 with a drive to left-center.

“Everybody knows how good (Sale’s) putaway pitches are,” Tulowitzki said. “He was tough.”

Tim Anderson and J.B. Shuck homered to help the Sox take two of

least seven homers.

Toronto starter Marcus Stroman (6-4) allowed four runs and seven hits in five innings. He walked four and struck out four. “(Stroman) drew a tough assignment today. He almost had to be perfect,” manager John Gibbons said.

“Sale is definitely one of the best, no doubt about that.”

The Sox jumped in front with two in the third. Eaton’s squeeze bunt drove in Tyler Saladino from third with one out, and Eaton reached on a fielder’s choice when Stroman’s throw home was high. One out later, Cabrera’s single drove in Anderson from second.

Anderson led off the fifth inning with a drive to left for his third homer.

Power holds off Kanaan to win at Road America

The Associated Press SONOMA, Calif. – For at least one weekend, Smoke was back.

Tony Stewart returned to victory lane for the first time in three years in vintage fashion – refusing to let Denny Hamlin steal a win at Sonoma Raceway away from him on the final lap Sunday.

Now he’s probably got a shot to run for a fourth NASCAR championship in his final season before retirement.

Stewart, mired in an 84-race losing streak dating to 2013, finally won to stop a slide of poor performances, injuries and personal turmoil that has tarnished the end of his career. He missed the first eight races of this season, his last as a NASCAR driver, with a back injury suffered in an off-road vehicle accident one week before the season opened.

It meant Stewart would have to win a race and crack the top 30 in points to have one last shot at glory before he stepped out of the No. 14 Chevrolet for good. It was a long shot considered the way he has run the last three years, but those who know Stewart knew not to count him out.

And anyone who has followed his career now that’s Stewart is best when he’s in a bad mood, and Smoke was ornery all weekend in the picturesque wine country.

He complained about young drivers, snarked that NASCAR will be without any tough guys once he retires and grumbled he has no fun driving a Cup car anymore.

Well, he sure had fun on Sunday.

The 45-year-old took the lead on fuel strategy during a caution with 24 laps to go, and had to hold on after another yellow flag stalled the race. The final restart came with 14 laps remaining – the

same number as Stewart’s car – and he held off a trio of Toyota drivers for his third career victory at Sonoma.

Hamlin made it interesting by pouncing on a Stewart mistake to snatch the lead away from Stewart in the seventh turn of the final lap. Stewart grabbed it back in tricky turn 11, where he dove to the inside of Hamlin and as the two raced side-by-side, Stewart pushed Hamlin toward the wall.

Stewart got past Hamlin and charged to the checkered flag with the entire side of his car crumpled and his tires slightly smoking from the contact with Hamlin.

Dozens of drivers then pumped their fists out their window to salute Stewart on his victory lap. Crew members lined the wall to slap his hand, and teammates Kevin Harvick and Kurt Busch were among the drivers to rush to speak to Stewart while he was still inside his car.

So did Hamlin, a former teammate of Stewart’s who has become somewhat of a protector to his one-time mentor.

As leader of the Driver Council, Hamlin got the council to split the cost of a $35,000 fine Stewart received this year for criticizing NASCAR. “He just told me he was proud of me, he knows what it means. We were teammates a long time,” an exhausted and emotional Stewart said in victory lane. After chugging a soda, he slumped to the ground and sat alongside his car.

Hamlin, meanwhile, didn’t indicate he gave the win to Stewart but chalked it up to his own mistake to allow Stewart to snatch the lead away from him.

“Looking in the rearview more than looking out front,” Hamlin said. “I just slid up a little bit in the middle and allowed him to get inside me. I knew he was going to put me in the wall. All is fair in love and war.”

ELKHART LAKE, Wis. – Healthy again following an early-season illness, Will Power is feeling much better about his chances of contending for another IndyCar championship.

After starting from the pole, Power led all but four laps and held off Tony Kanaan’s last-lap surge to take the 202-mile Kohler Grand Prix by 0.74 seconds Sunday at Road America.

It was Power’s second series victory of the year for Team Penske, both coming in June. Power also won June 5 at Detroit, ending a frustrating three-race stretch in which he didn’t finish higher than 10th.

The slump was uncharacteristic for the 2014 series champion and annual contender.

“I got my normal engine back, and perform like I normally do, and that’s the difference,” said Power, referring to his health.

Power said he was dealing with food allergies in the offseason. He missed the season opener in March at St. Petersburg after being diagnosed with an inner ear infection.

“Finally back to my normal fitness level, just the way I do things,” Power said.

He had the stamina to hold off Kanaan at the end by 0.7429 seconds as Chevrolet finished 1-2 and took three of the top five spots.

Kanaan shaved about a half-second off the gap with Power after the white flag flew. But he couldn’t catch up as the cars winded their way toward the end of the final lap on the 14-turn track.

Those extra “push-to-pass” fuel boosts that Power had saved came in handy late in the race. It made for an exciting finish in IndyCar’s first race at the rural Wisconsin road course since 2007.

“This is the type of places we want to race. If you ask any driver about this road course, it’s one of their favorites by far, and the fans, too,” Kanaan said.

Track officials said the race weekend broke an attendance record.

“We can’t wait to come back next year and do it again,” IndyCar president Jay Frye said.

Power has a fast car, “but I don’t think he was like anywhere stronger,” Kanaan said. “We closed the gap any time we needed to, but he just had that little advantage every time because he was in the lead.”

WHO’S NOT: With Power in front, the race reset with six laps to go following the only caution flag of the afternoon, stunting the momentum of points leader Simon Pagenaud, who was then in second place.

But Pagenaud, whose car seemed to improve through the middle of the race, fell back in a surprise at the restart He finished in 13th place.

“I just lost power. Similar to the problem we had at Indy in the Indianapolis 500. We just lost power and you’re not going anywhere,” Pagenaud said. “You’ve just got to hang on and get the best result you can.”

NOTABLES: Kanaan surged forward for his best finish of the season. Graham Rahal was third, 5.9 seconds behind Power. Ryan Hunter-Reay was fourth. Scott Dixon, who was second in the points race coming into the afternoon, had engine trouble early and dropped out after six laps when his No. 9 car lost power.

COMING BACK: IndyCar has a three-year deal with Road America, and track president George Bruggenthies said the series is set to return on June 25, 2017.

BETHESDA, Md. – Billy Hurley III held the club in his left hand and fist pumped with his right. Not far from his Annapolis home and the Naval Academy he graduated from 12 years ago, he became a champion.

Hurley shot a 2-under 69 on Sunday to win his hometown Quicken Loans National at Congressional for his first PGA Tour victory.

He finished at 17 under in Tiger Woods’ annual tournament, three strokes ahead of three-time major champion Vijay Singh.

“Billy played well,” Singh said.

“He’s been playing well all week.

You can see he’s under control and it’s nice to see him play well and not lose it actually at the end of the tournament.”

Hurley didn’t lose it. He only got better as it went along.

To beat Singh, Ernie Els and 21-year-old Jon Rahm, Hurley showed the poise he developed at the Naval Academy and during his five years of service. Mental toughness and focus he said help with adversity on the course, and that showed through in his 104th PGA Tour start.

With the 53-year-old Singh closing on him, Hurley was at his best.

He holed out from 35 yards on the fairway for birdie on the 15th, a shot worthy of celebration and one Woods himself called “impressive, really impressive.”

As if that wasn’t enough, Hurley made a 27-foot putt on the 16th to seal the tournament and wrap up the $1,242,000 first-place prize and a spot in the British Open. He had never finished higher than a

Hurley celebrated on the 18th green with wife Heather, daughter Madison and sons Will and Jacob.

His children held miniature American flags as they watched their dad reach a high point in his career.

“I couldn’t think of a better tournament for my first PGA Tour win,” Hurley said. “I’m just thrilled to have gotten it done today.”

JOLIET – Joliet Township Animal Control has been awarded a second $20,000 grant from the Petco Foundation to provide free registered microchips and engraved ID tags to all residents of Joliet, Crest Hill and Rockdale, as well as offer free spaying and neutering to community pets later this summer.

Animal Control was awarded a similar grant in December, and it was able to help nearly 250 animals.

Each animal was updated on all vaccines, microchipped, spayed or neutered and received an engraved ID tag.

Having a pet micro chipped, with a personalized tag, is the fastest and most secure way to have the pet returned to its family. A microchip is administered like a simple shot and only takes a few seconds; the paperwork actually takes longer.

Officials said the generosity of this grant has also allowed JTAC to offer more free or discounted spaying and neutering to the community. In addition to limiting the number of puppies being born, there are many health benefits for both males and females, including less chance for cancer and other illnesses and diseases.

This can lead to osteoarthritis, as was diagnosed on your magnetic resonance imaging scan (MRI). Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis.

Should you have treatment on your “good” knee? Surprisingly, meniscal tears are nearly as common in people who have no knee pain as in those with pain. MRIs are so sensitive they often detect abnormalities that are not causing any problems to the patient.

Doctors always should treat patients, not X-rays or MRIs. Since your right knee feels fine, there is no need to treat the meniscal tear.

If you had pain – or if you develop pain – the decision would be more difficult. It would be hard to know whether your pain was caused by the arthritis, the tear or both. If your symptoms were mild, it probably would be best to treat the arthritis first.

If your symptoms got worse, you could consider meniscus surgery, which can help relieve the pain.

That’s the long answer to your question.

Dear Dr. K: My knees hurt a lot, more on the left. At 76 years young, I guess I should expect that. An MRI scan shows I have a “torn meniscus” in my right knee, and arthritis in both knees. Is there anything to be done?

Dear Reader: Before I can answer your interesting question, I need to provide some basic information. The meniscus is a crescent-shaped disk of fibrous tissue and cartilage. Each knee has two menisci located between the thighbone (femur) and the lower leg bone (tibia).

The menisci act as shock absorbers.

They protect the other cartilage tissue that covers the end portions of the femur and tibia. The kind of injury most likely to tear a meniscus is a twisting injury of the knee.

Often this occurs during sports.

In older people, however, the meniscus becomes more prone to injury; it can tear for no apparent reason. A torn meniscus becomes more common as we get older.

When a meniscus tears, you sometimes know it: There’s a “pop” or a twinge of discomfort in the knee. But sometimes there are no symptoms when one gets torn.

After a meniscus tears, you can have different symptoms. Some of my patients with a torn meniscus suddenly have trouble kneeling or squatting. It hurts when they do it, and it really hurts when they try to stand back up.

Other patients report the knee sometimes “locks” or “catches” just during walking. Sometimes they say the knee will just give out on them. When that happens, they almost always have experienced pain just before the knee gave out.

Sometimes it’s even more subtle: A person has the impression something is

In my community, leash laws rarely are enforced, and it’s common to see dogs running loose in city parks. The result is an increase in dogfights and unwelcome contact with people. Coyote attacks also are common here in the West, and small dogs often are the victims.

If other dog owners kept their dogs leashed, I wouldn’t have to worry about them bounding up to mine and the ensuing dogfight that follows when my dogs interpret that behavior as a threat. Remember, just because you think your dog is friendly, that doesn’t mean all the other dogs are. If people would just keep their dogs leashed, it would avert a myriad of problems for the dogs and their owners. – Marge In Phoenix Dear Marge: I’m glad you wrote. Unless dog owners are in an area where it is designated their animals can run loose – such as an offleash dog park – their pets should be leashed for their own safety as well as that of others.

Off-leash dog parks (and beaches) provide a place for pets to exercise and socialize while also encouraging compliance with leash and “scoop” laws.

Pet owners must remember coyotes are intelligent and highly adaptable. While they mostly do their hunting at night, they also have been known to “grab a snack” during the day if they happen to be hungry – to the dismay of owners of small pets. And when I say “grab,” I’m being literal. It has happened in an instant in front of the owner.

Dear Abby: I’m moving in a few weeks and have asked my girlfriend of two years to move in with me. She’s considering it, but I suspect she’s unsure about it because I am pretty messy at times -- underwear tossed on the floor, plates piling up in the kitchen every other day, etc.

These are some basics: Buy a large wicker basket and keep it in a corner of your bedroom or closet. When the underwear and socks come off, toss them into the basket instead of on the floor.

When you remove your pants and shirt, instead of throwing them over a chair, hang them up.

After you’re finished eating, either put your plate, silverware, etc. into the dishwasher or hand-wash them immediately and put them where they belong. Try it for a week, and you’ll be amazed at how tidy your place will be.

But some less experienced players think that they also apply to declarer -- humbug. That belief cost a game contract in this deal. South was in three no-trump. After West led a fourth-highest club two, what should have happened?

North was right to open one heart, not one no-trump. Strain to show a five-card major. Here, North had no spade stopper, no tenaces and a comfortable rebid. South’s two-notrump rebid invited game, showing a decent 10 to 12 points and something in the unbid club suit. North had an easy raise.

The original South immediately remembered “second hand low,” so he played dummy’s club four and took the trick with his eight -- more humbug, since the contract could no longer be made. Too late, declarer counted up his winners. He saw six: one heart, two diamonds and three clubs. Another four tricks were establishable in spades, so South was not worried. At trick two, he led a low spade toward dummy’s 10. However, West knew that defenders usually play second hand low. West took the next spade and exited with a club to dummy’s ace. Eventually declarer went down two.

As you have noticed, South, after driving out the spade ace, needed a hand entry to cash the remaining spades. Since his only side winner was the club king, he had to win trick one with dummy’s club ace. Then he could have played on spades and cruised home.
