Jean Hansen remembered as civic leader, trailblazer for women

bokon@shawmedia.com Introducing Jean Hansen at an event was no simple matter.

Lisa Morel Las remembers the first time she met Hansen while Las was in a leadership class run by the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

“They kept going and going and going because Jean was involved with everything,” Las said.

Hansen, 80, of Channahon died Saturday.

Her obituary in The Herald-News on Wednesday listed some 30 boards and organizations in which she was involved.

Hansen was a mentor for many young women, helping them become involved in community organizations and encouraging them to take leadership roles, said Las, executive director of the Will County Children’s Advocacy Center.

While the obituary list is long, not everything was included, said Hansen’s nephew, Matthew Baskerville, owner of the Reeves and Baskerville Funeral Homes.

“After the obituary was published, we kept finding out, oh, we forgot this,” Baskerville said.

Baskerville was introduced to some of those organizations when he was a teenager.

to chamber meetings and Kiwanis meetings and Rotary luncheons,” he said. “I was always very proud of what she had done. She was a trailblazer, especially for women.”

Hansen in the early 1960s was a commercial pilot, flying airmail and charter flights.

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet has become a partner in the national commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. A newly formed committee to plan events and projects was introduced to the City Council on Tuesday as a proclamation was read making Joliet a partner.

Mayor Bob O’Dekirk initiated the committee after getting a call from the Department of Defense.

“They wanted to know if Joliet would become a partner,” O’Dekirk said. “I

curity and eventually became regional manager of a network of offices based in Joliet.

Kathleen Hansen said while her mother was involved in a wide array of organizations, she enjoyed working with groups with a business or economic purpose.

“She would work with the contractor’s association. She would work with Habitat for Humanity,” Kathleen said.

“She had a business sense for it.”

Jean retired in 2007. Kathleen said her mother withdrew from her community involvement as her health was declining.

Jean was the first female chairman of the Joliet chamber board and is credited with saving the chamber from collapse when it was in deep financial trouble in the early 1990s, said Mary Jaworski, the chamber’s president today.

“She not only did her job,” Jaworski said. “She came here every day, putting the place back on its feet.”

Jaworski said Jean had a reputation for being a contributor when she joined an organization.

“Whatever her cause and whatever organization she was involved in, it was the best interest of the organization that concerned her,” Jaworski said. “She was a good leader and she was fair.”

Hansen’s family will receive friends at Evergreen Cemetery, 1275 Cemetery Road in Morris, on Friday from 10:30 a.m. until graveside services at 11 a.m.

mittee is working on its first project, which is to get adequate night lighting for the flags flown at eight city monument locations. The monuments are not equipped with electricity, but Horne said they could be lit with solar-powered lighting.

“We plan future events,” Horne added.

“Our commitment is to have at least two a year for the next three years.”

Horne said the committee also expects to add two members.

The commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War began in 2012 and runs to 2025.

Seneca home damaged in storm; Coal City anniversary event canceled

fsarver@shawmedia.com Severe thunderstorms hit Will and Grundy counties late Wednesday night, and while damage was reported in Seneca, the rest of the area appeared to escape any serious damage, according to immediate reports following the storm.

The National Weather Service had warned since early Tuesday of severe storms that could produce tornadoes, and there was a report of at least one tornado that touched down near Amboy in Lee County and Earlville in LaSalle County, with minor damage initially reported.

The storms appeared to not cause much damage in either Will or Grundy counties, but Seneca had reports of at least one home damaged near East 29th Road between Seneca and Interstate 80, according to traffic heard on a police scanner and eyewitness visuals. Reports were that the top of the house was blown off.

There also were reports in Seneca of power lines down, as well as scanner reports of a semitrailer that had rolled over on westbound I-80 near the Seneca exit.

The reports of a possible tornado in Seneca triggered a tornado warning in Grundy County, said Grundy County Emergency Management Agency Director Joe Schroeder, so sirens were sounded. But as of 9:45 p.m., Schroeder said there were no reports of damage in Grundy.

The storm system did have officials worried, however, especially as it headed toward Coal City, which was marking the one-year anniversary of the EF3 tornado that hit that town just shy of 10 p.m. a year ago to the day Wednesday, damaging more than 800 structures.

“It eerily had the same setup as last year on this date for the one that hit Coal City,” Schroeder said. “It tracked the same. We were nervous.”

Coal City Police Sgt. Tom Logan said at 10 p.m. there was no reported damage in the village. He said residents had plenty of warning and were hunkered down in basements.

The stump is all that remains of one of about 50,000 trees that were damaged and is meant to highlight how much the landscape of the village has changed since the tornado.

No alternate date for the ceremony was announced.

Multiple warnings issued

The evening was filled with various warnings from the National Weather Service, including flood advisories, flood watches, thunderstorm warnings and tornado watches.

A tornado warning was issued shortly after 9 p.m. for northwestern Grundy County, and it expired at 9:30 p.m.

At 9:45 p.m., the only local power outages showing on a ComEd outage map were about 40 customers between Morris and Mazon.

Still, the powerful storms packed hurricane-force winds and large hail, and moved across parts of the Midwest throughout the night. In Chicago, soccer fans attending the Copa America semifinal at Soldier Field were urged to take immediate shelter.

Travelers saw an impact by early afternoon with cancellations and delays at both of Chicago’s international airports. The Chicago Department of Aviation announced 100 canceled flights at O’Hare and 40 canceled flights at Midway, citing thunderstorms in the area.

National Weather Service meteorologist Matt Friedlein said prior to

the storms hitting that Wednesday was the first pronounced weather threat of the summer season, and advised local residents to review their emergency plans or drills in the event of extreme weather. If they’re outside, they should be mindful of where they can seek shelter quickly, he said.

The Will County Emergency Management Agency had staff at its office Wednesday to monitor the weather and prepare to alert people if there were reports of a storm or funnel cloud, Harold Damron, the agency’s director, said earlier in the day.

mmallory@shawmedia.com Will County’s Workforce Services Division has announced tweaks to its Mobile Workforce Center schedule in July, including a new stop in Frankfort.

The mobile unit travels throughout the county to help residents with resume development, cover letters and job applications.

Starting next month, the center will stop at the Wilmington Public Library, 201 S. Kankakee St., from 9:30 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. Thursdays, instead of Wilmington City Hall, its former host site.

Will County Executive’s Office administrative manager Susan Flessner said the change was made because libraries are more conducive to the job search experience.

“Libraries are natural places people go when looking for work,” Flessner said. “We work with libraries on most of our stops.”

The center formerly stopped only in Mokena on Fridays. Flessner said the stop in Frankfort will allow the job search program to extend further east.

The center also makes stops in Bolingbrook on Mondays, University Park on

Tuesdays and Plainfield on Wednesdays.

Flessner said the mobile unit travels to different communities to enhance outreach.

“It’s more convenient for our residents to access these services where they live,” she said.

The driver of the center vehicle, Dave Nichols, is a certified professional career coach, Flessner said, and is training to become certified in professional

resume writing.

“He is available for all types of services regarding your job search,” Flessner said.

The program has been in place more than a decade, Flessner said. It is funded by the Federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act. Will County received about $6 million in funding this year from the act, which pays for the mobile unit and several other efforts, Flessner said.

GOP seeks applicants to fill Rep. Anthony’s seat

previous state Rep. Pam Roth, R-Morris, stepped down when she moved to Texas.

“It is with a heart full of gratitude to the people of Kendall, Grundy, LaSalle and Will counties that I announce my resignation from the Illinois House of Representatives. It has been the greatest honor of my career to serve our community in the General Assembly the past three years,” Anthony said in a news release issued Sunday.

Candidates who would like to be considered for the appointment should file with the committee on or before 5 p.m. July 1, according to a news release issued Monday night by the committee.

Grundy County Board Chairman David Welter has publicly said he is considering seeking to fill the seat An-

thony is leaving.

The selected candidate will serve through January, the remainder of Anthony’s term, and be responsible for representing the interests of residents in parts of Will, Grundy, Kendall and LaSalle counties. Area Republican officials have said the person chosen also will be caucused onto the November ballot to face Democrat Martha Shugart in the general election.

Candidates can get a questionnaire from LaSalle County Republican Chairman Don Jensen, Will County Republican Chairwoman Kathy Havel, Kendall County Republican Chairman James Marter or Grundy County Republican Chairman Aren Hansen.

“The appointment committee encourages everyone interested in the position to apply,” Hansen said Monday.

“This will be an open process. We have a lot of talent in the 75th district and we look forward to taking applications.”

Hansen said the committee will interview candidates it selects.

The application for the position should include a cover letter, the completed questionnaire and any other pertinent information such as a resume or curriculum vitae. MORRIS – A 16-year-old Morris teenager was ticketed after striking a Morris couple who were riding their bicycles Tuesday night on Old Stage Road.

Mark and Janice Wendling of Morris were riding bicycles west about 7 p.m. in the 4500 block of Old Stage Road when they were struck from behind, according to a news release from the Grundy County Coroner’s Office.

Grundy County Deputy Sheriff Craig Meece said the teen was issued a citation for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. The incident remains under investigation.

Mark Wendling was pronounced dead at the scene by Grundy County Coroner John Callahan at 7:15 p.m., according to the news release. Janice Wendling was flown from the scene and died at 8:32 p.m. at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.

Both were wearing helmets, according to Callahan.

The couple married July 12, 1986, according to their obituary. Janice Wendling was a math teacher in Morris Elementary School District 54.

School and community-based counselors will be available from 8 a.m. to noon Thursday and Friday, according to a posting on the District 54 website.

The posting also noted it would share service information once it becomes available.

“There were always kids in [her] classroom, before school, after school,” Interim Superintendent Al Gegen-

heimer said Wednesday. “She was a confident teacher that everyone wanted.”

Gegenheimer said he saw Janice Wendling on Tuesday morning when she stopped by his office to give him some strawberry preserves she made.

“She called me last week and wanted to meet with me before my time as interim superintendent came to an end; she came by my office yesterday at 10 a.m,” he said.

Mark Wendling worked as an engineer at the Exelon LaSalle County Generating Station in Marseilles.

According to friends, he was active with the Morris Soccer Association, and both he and his wife were supporters of the Morris Community High School Band Boosters.

Visitation is scheduled for 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at Cross Lutheran Church, 8609 Route 47 in Yorkville, according to an obituary posted online at Nelson Funeral Homes. Funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at the church.

The couple were bicycling to prepare for Bike MS: Tour de Farms this weekend in DeKalb. The fundraising portion of the ride has a minimum of $300 a rider.

An examination was scheduled for Wednesday by Callahan’s office for Mark Wendling; an examination for Janice Wendling also was scheduled for Wednesday by the DuPage County Coroner’s Office.

The investigation continues by the Grundy County Coroner’s Office, Grundy County Sheriff’s Office and DuPage County Coroner’s Office.

Serial killer in Will Taste of Joliet County court to challenge ’84 arrest STYX

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Milton Johnson, who is convicted of five 1983 murders, suspected in at least five others and appeared Wednesday in Will County court, could receive a new trial from his last post-conviction motion.

However, it appears unlikely Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak or an appellate court will agree with his argument.

Although his original sentence was commuted to life in prison when the state abolished the death penalty, Johnson, 66, still is entitled to make post-conviction motions under the laws in place at the time.

Appellate defender John Greenlees said Johnson’s trial attorney, William Swano, failed to suppress his arrest from being used in a case and should have challenged forensic evidence that matched bullets found at Johnson’s parents’ house to the victims.

In March 1983, Johnson was paroled after serving half of a 25-year sentence for raping a woman in 1970 in Joliet’s Pilcher Park. On July 17, 1983, he killed Anthony Hackett, 19, who had been sleeping in his car on Interstate 55 near Wilmington, and raped Hackett’s fiancée, leaving her for dead.

On Aug. 20, 1983, Johnson fatally stabbed Marilyn Baers, 45, Barbara Dunbar, 38, Pamela Ryan, 29, and Agnes Ryan, 75, inside a ceramics shop on Cass Street in Joliet.

Prosecutors have said there also is “overwhelming evidence” Johnson killed five people – George Kiehl, 24, Cathleen Norwood, 25, Richard Paulin, 32, and Will County Sheriff’s auxiliary deputies Denis Foley, 50, and Steven Mayer, 22, off 147th Street in Homer Township the night before Hackett was murdered. Those slayings never have been prosecuted because Johnson was sentenced to death on the other cases.

He also is suspected in other Will County murders from 1983, according to law enforcement.

Johnson was arrested in March 1984 when he met with his parole officers. Greenlees said since Johnson was not free to leave the locked facility before being placed under arrest, Swano should’ve challenged its legality in the case of the Hackett slaying.

Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Phil Mock said being in a locked building does not always mean someone is under arrest, such as if a member of the public took a tour of a prison.

“Even if [the defense] is right, there’s no ‘fruit of the poisonous tree.’ Prosecutors didn’t use the fingerprints or hair standards that were given [at the trial],” Mock said.

Although subsequent research has invalidated the science used to match the bullets, Mock noted the Supreme Court cited identification by Hackett’s fiancée and several other pieces of evidence when affirming Johnson’s conviction and did not reference the bullets.

Joliet police seek public’s help in armed street robbery

At 10:23 p.m., the victim was walking in the alley of the 300 block of Willow Avenue in Joliet when a black SUV drove past, according to Joliet Deputy Chief Ed Gregory. The vehicle stopped and a man got out of the driver’s seat and told the victim to give him her blue purse.

“He showed her a handgun and when she gave him the purse, he said, ‘Don’t make me shoot you,’ ” Gregory said.

The robber then got back into the SUV, where a woman sitting in the passenger seat asked, “Did you get it?” and they drove off, Gregory said.

The suspect was described as a black man in his early 20s. He was wearing a black hat, red shirt and black pants.

JOLIET – Police said a man broke the window of a squad car and jumped out to escape custody Tuesday night, but then turned himself in to police the next morning.

Joliet Police Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said officers were called at 11:25 p.m. to an apartment in the 1800 block of Asbury Circle Drive where a 23-year-old woman said she’d been struck by Kardan D. Mitchell, 22, of Joliet.

“The incident was witnessed by another woman. Officers spoke Kardan D. with them and deter- Mitchell mined there was probable cause to arrest Mitchell for domestic battery,” Gregory said.

Mitchell had left the apartment but was located nearby and taken into custody. Gregory said an officer handcuffed Mitchell and placed him in the back of a squad car to be taken to the police station, but during the ride Mitchell began knocking into the rear passenger side

JOLIET – The Presence Inwood Athletic Club will be renamed next year. The Joliet Park District is negotiating with ATI Physical Therapy to become the new naming sponsor for the Inwood Athletic Club. ATI has naming rights now for the field at Memorial Stadium, located across the parking lot from the athletic club.

The Joliet Park District board this week authorized staff to negotiate a new naming rights agreement with ATI for Inwood.

The district is reaching the end of the 10-year agreement signed with Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center when the athletic club opened.

“We have a great relationship with Presence,” board President Glen Marcum said Wednesday. “But we were looking for a five-year agreement.”

Marcum said Presence was interested in a three-year agreement while

ATI was willing to sponsor the athletic club for five years.

Presence issued a statement saying, in part, “This decision was made after careful discernment and on balance with the numerous other initiatives underway at Presence Health that more directly benefit the patients we serve.”

The statement said Presence is interested in partnering with the park district “in other ways to help the residents of our community achieve health and wellness.”

Park District Executive Director Tom Carstens also said Presence is likely to be involved with park activities.

“We have every intention to work with Presence in the future in partnerships and possible naming rights,” Carstens said.

Carstens said he would not discuss the potential value of the naming rights deal with ATI until an agreement is reached.

Police established a perimeter and a Will County sheriff’s canine unit was called to the scene but could not locate the suspect, Gregory said.

About 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Mitchell turned himself in to the Will County Sheriff’s Office, Gregory said. He was transported to the Joliet police station and then taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center for medical treatment before being booked that afternoon into Will County jail. He is charged with misdemeanor domestic battery, as well as felony offenses related to theft, weapon possession and evidence destruction, according to jail records.

Mitchell’s criminal history includes a domestic battery case from 2012 and several traffic violations, Will County court records stated.

“We held a job fair last year and I was shocked not only at the number of people needing work, but also by the number of employers needing employees,” Batinick said.

Batinick said this year the event will bring back three workshops to help those seeking work.

Those workshops will focus on how to create a stand-out resume to get the interview with the company you want to work for; how to be successful in the interview once you land it; and mastering your job search.

Will County Center for Community Concerns receives HUD grant SHAW MEDIA JOLIET – The Will County Center for Community Concerns has received a housing counseling grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

HUD announced this week that more than $42 million in housing counseling grants would be given to hundreds of national, regional and local organizations to help families and individuals with their housing needs and to prevent future foreclosures, according to a news release from the agency.

The grants and the additional funding they leverage will assist more than

1.4 million households find housing, make more informed housing choices, or keep their current homes, according to the news release.

The Will County Center for Community Concerns will receive a $28,713 grant. The center assists and enables low-and moderate-income individuals to obtain the opportunities needed to prepare themselves for self-sufficiency and attain stable, affordable housing, according to the news release.

In 2014, the agency provided more than 17,000 services to individuals and families in Will County and provided HUD-funded housing counseling services to more than 254 households.

MARY E. BUTLER Mary E. Butler (nee Snyder), 65, of New Lenox, passed away Tuesday, June 14, 2016, at Joliet Area Community Hospice Home.

Mary was born in Joliet, to the late Albert and Olga (nee Kocolowski).

She was the beloved wife of Richard; loving mother of Andrea (Tony) Pfieffer, Elizabeth (Tony) Butler-Elder and Caroline (fiancé Lawrence Carls) Butler; dear sister of Albert Snyder, Patricia Snyder (deceased), Arlette (Lawrence) Seppi, James Snyder and Steven (Ginger) Snyder; and cherished aunt and great-aunt of many nieces and nephews.

Mary was a retired special education paraprofessional for Lincoln-Way Area Special Education District 843. She is the most beautiful, intelligent, talented woman her husband of 46 years has ever met.

She was preceded in death by her parents Raymond and Winifred Seamans.

Helen was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church in New Lenox, and member of the Boot Kickers Country Dancing in Joliet. She enjoyed pampering herself at the local beauty salons and shopping.

Mary McKinley was born on Sept. 2, 1929. She departed this life on June 15, 2016.

Mary was born in Morgan Park, to Rosa Mae Weems and Willie Davis. She later married Ellsworth McKinley in Lockport, on May 2, 1951. To this union, 11 children were born, Edward (Irene) Davis, Laura Davis (deceased), Marlene Keiser (deceased), Moses (Freddie) Davis, Annette McKinley, Sheldon (Evelyn) McKinley, Doreen McKinley, Charlotte McKinley, Evette McGrew McKinley and Elonda (Michael) Thomas. Mary has 30 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.

Mary attended Medill School and John M. Smith School in Chicago. She moved to Joliet in 1971, where she was employed by Sunny Hill Nursing Home and later Salem Nursing Home.

She retired from Will County Courthouse in 2010.

Mary attended Mount Moriah Baptist Church, where she was an usher, and later moved her membership to Holy Cross M.B. Church under the leadership of Pastor Victor Flowers.

She leaves to cherish her memories one sister, Shirley Floyd; and one brother, Leon Davis.

RUTH ANN MERTZ Born: Aug. 6, 1931 Died: June 20, 2016

Ruth Ann Mertz transitioned to eternal peace on June 20, 2016, after months of illness.

Ruth was born to Joseph and Marie (nee Koci) Sladek on Aug. 6, 1931, in Chicago. Ruth married Henry on June 23, 1956, and her daughter Janet (Shaw-Binns) was born on July 15, 1957.

Ruth had a zest for life and was known for her warm hugs and calling everyone “Cookie!”

She was an avid Bunco player and was a proud member of the “Chicks with Tiaras” who donated half of their prize money to charity every month. Tiaras were worn during their gather-

ings and she was the head-table bell ringer.

Ruth was a charter member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Romeoville, where she served in various capacities, such as Sunday school teacher, president of the Lutheran Church Women, church treasurer and council member.

Ruth was a lifetime member of the Romeoville Golden Agers Club, serving as president for seven years, treasurer for five years and nominated for the Hall of Fame at the Senior Services Center in Joliet. Ruth was also Romeoville’s first Citizen of the Year.

Ruth retired from the village of Romeoville in 1989 as the personnel coordinator. She continued to be active in real estate, along with her husband Henry, at Mertz Realty. She has been on the Board of Directors for Cornerstone Services for the past 27 years. Ruth was also the past secretary and active member of the National Historical society of Germans from Russia.

After the passing of her husband, Henry, Ruth began sharing a home in Plainfield with her daughter, Janet, and son-in-law, Keith, and their “zoo.”

Ruth was an avid mystery reader, lover of crime dramas, cardinals (the birds, not the team) and Snoopy. She had an extensive teddy bear collection, too.

Ruth had a great and loving outlook on life and was loved by many family and friends. Ruth and Henry will be celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary in Heaven on June 23, 2016.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Henry; parents, Joseph and Marie (nee Koci) Sladek; and sister, Elaine (Ted) Brett. Also preceded in death by her nephew, Randy; and niece, Bonnie.

Ruth is survived by her daughter and son, Janet and Keith Shaw-Binns; her three grandsons, Andrew (Amy), Daniel and Michael; and by her great-grandson, Oscar Keith. Also survived by her goddaughters, Cindy and Amy; her nephews, Bruce, David and Robert; and her nieces, Ruby, Roxanne, Patty, Cindy and Laurie. Also survived by her loving grandcat, Zoe; granddog, Bryson; and grandbirds, Twinkie and Skye. Also survived by cousins, Leandra and Anita.

Ruth’s last request is that you remember her with kind thoughts and when you see a beautiful sunshiny day, know that she is thinking of all of you and watching over you from a higher place.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 25, 2016, from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Anderson Memorial Chapel 606 Townhall Drive, Romeoville, with funeral services Saturday evening at 5 p.m.

George Albert Louis Bartnik, 93, of Braidwood, passed away on Tuesday, June 21, 2016, at Heritage Health in Streator.

He was born Oct. 10, 1922, at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Chicago, to the late Adam Joseph Bartnik and Anastasia (Ledin) Bartnik.

George lived at 5120 S. Whipple St. in the family home built by his grandfather, Albert Ledin. He attended Sawyer Avenue Grade School. He was one of the original Chicago Motor Club crossing guards. He attended Thomas Kelly High School, graduating in 1940. He was a member of the band and the orchestra, and the R.O.T.C., qualifying as a sharpshooter.

He attended John Marshall Law School for pre-legal courses. He then attended the College of Advanced Traffic graduating with a degree in traffic management.

He enlisted in 1943 with the Army Air Corps, soloed in a Stearman at Chesterfield, Mo. He went on to San Marcos Navigation School graduating in Aug. 1944. He joined the B-17 crew and flew to England. He was a member of the 8th Air Force 388th Bomb Group, 560th Squadron. They were shot down over Germany on Feb. 20, 1945, and he became a P.O.W. He received the Purple Heart.

A fellow serviceman wrote to George: “Tell him we always depended on him to get us where we were headed and he always equaled that trust and brought us back to base. Thank him for what he did for his country and for his crew, and tell him there were no quitters in our crew, even during the worst of times. Tell him Ellis’ crew said to ‘Carry On.’ Give him my personal hello and “ ‘Keep ‘Em Flyin.’ ” George joined Liquid Carbonic Corporation in May 1942 as a mail boy. After 45 years he retired in February 1987 as vice president International Division Liquid Carbonic CBI. He was founder and a member of Country Club Hills Volunteer Fire Department, retiring as a lieutenant. He served as trustee for the newly formed Fire Protection District for several terms. He also served as member of the city’s Fire and Police Protection board. He served as Alderman for the 3rd Ward in Country Club Hills. He was a member of the Braidwood Zoning Board for several terms. He was a member of the Three Rivers Yacht Club and the V.F.W. Wilmington.

Surviving are his five sons, George P. (Ann) Bartnik of Chattanooga, TN, Marc Bartnik of Traverse City, MI., Thomas (Lisa) Bartnik of Mokena, Joseph (Kathy) Bartnik, Odell and Paul (Dianne) Bartnik, Rutledge, TN; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous relatives. He is also survived by his former wife, Margot Bowman; good friend, Joe Faletti; and guardian angels, Diana Kuehni and Jake Etzkorn.

Charles J. Michaels passed away at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center.

Born June 16, 1988, in Morris, Natasha Fay is the daughter of Lisa Jones and Russell Miller.

She was raised in Morris, attended Mazon, Channahon and Minooka schools, and later achieved her GED. As a young girl, Tasha attended Pam’s Academy of Dance in Morris and enjoyed playing volleyball. She was a smart, vibrant young woman with a beautiful smile, who was loved by many and loved all that were close to her, especially her children.

MISSOULA, Mont. – One of the last two surviving members of the Doolittle Raiders – who bombed Japan in an attack that stunned that nation and boosted U.S. morale – has died in Montana, his family said.

Retired Staff Sgt. David Jonathan Thatcher died Wednesday in a Missoula hospital. He was 94. He suffered a stroke Sunday, Thatcher’s son, Jeff, told the Missoulian newspaper.

Thatcher’s death leaves Retired Lt. Col. Richard “Dick” Cole of Comfort, Texas, as the only living airman from among 80 who took off from an aircraft carrier on 16 B-25 bombers to target factory areas and military installations in Japan on April 18, 1942.

Afterward, the planes headed for airfields in mainland China, realizing they would run out of fuel, according to the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force.

The mission lifted American spirits five months after Pearl Harbor was bombed and forced the Japanese to spend resources defending their home islands.

Thatcher was engineer-gunner aboard the plane nicknamed “The Ruptured Duck.”

After the bombing, Thatcher’s plane – running low on fuel – crash landed in the ocean near China. The plane flipped over and all the crew members except for Thatcher were seriously injured. Thatcher was knocked out, but soon regained consciousness, gathered the rest of the crew, admin-

istered first aid and convinced some Chinese guerrillas to take the crew to safety in inland China.

Thatcher received a Silver Star for gallantry in action.

The crew’s crash-landing and evasion of Japanese troops in China was depicted in the movie “Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo,” based on the book written by the plane’s pilot, Lt. Ted Lawson.

Because the bombing run was so dangerous, all those involved were volunteers. Thatcher said they gave little thought about earning a place in history.

“We figured it was just another bombing mission,” he told The Associated Press in an interview in March 2015. In the years afterward, though, he said, they realized: “It was an important event in World War II.” After his military career, Thatcher worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 30 years as a clerk and later a letter carrier. He retired in 1980. He stayed in contact with the surviving members of the Doolittle Raiders and attended nearly every reunion the group held through the Final Toast in November 2013.

In March 2015, Thatcher and Cole presented the Raiders’ Congressional Gold Medal for heroism and valor to the Air Force museum for permanent display.

Thatcher was born on July 31, 1921, in Bridger, Montana, one of 10 children. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Dawn; three of their five children and seven grandchildren.

Wayne Jackson of the Memphis Horns duo dies at 74

The Associated Press MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Trumpet player Wayne Jackson, who played standout horn lines on rock ’n’ roll, soul, R&B and pop mainstays along with Memphis Horns partner and tenor saxophonist Andrew Love, has died. He was 74.

His wife, Amy, said her husband died of congestive heart failure Tuesday night at a hospital with her by his side. Jackson had been hospitalized and released June 7 before taking a turn for the worse Monday night and being readmitted.

Presley, Neil Diamond and U2.

Jackson and Love – the Memphis Horns – were awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in February 2012, only the second instrumental backup group in history to receive the honor at the time.

Love, who was black, and Jackson, who was white, played together on 52 No. 1 records and 83 gold and platinum records, according to Memphis-based Stax Records. Amy Jackson said her husband received his first gold record in 1961 and his last in 2005.

The duo backed up Aretha Franklin, Elvis Presley, Otis Redding, Neil Diamond, Isaac Hayes, the Doobie Brothers, U2, Jack White, Alicia Keys and many other American pop music acts.

CHICAGO – Former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert wheeled himself into a federal prison in Minnesota on Wednesday to serve his 15-month sentence in a hush-money case involving revelations that he sexually abused at least four boys while a high school wrestling coach in Illinois.

The 74-year-old Republican – one of the highest-ranking U.S. politicians to ever go to prison – arrived around noon at the facility in Rochester where he will be known as Inmate No. 47991-424.

Hastert, who began using a wheelchair after falling ill last year, wore a black shirt and camouflage pants as he wheeled himself into the complex between razor-wire fencing. The only person accompanying him was a woman, who followed him carrying crutches, a plastic bag and a small brown box.

Jolene Burdge, the sister of one Hastert victim, said in a phone interview later Wednesday that she never fully believed until Hastert went in that someone as powerful as he would end up behind bars for what he did.

When sentenced in April in Chicago, Hastert was branded “a serial child molester” by U.S. District Judge Thomas M.

MOLINE – Illinois transportation officials said a Chicago-to-Moline passenger rail project has been resurrected.

The Illinois Department of Transportation told the Federal Railroad Administration that it’s proceeding with the proposal, The (Moline) Dispatch reported.

Under Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn’s administration, the state awarded about $45 million for the project, which originally was expected to be running by 2012. But Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner placed the project under review after taking office.

Illinois was at risk of losing $177 million in federal funding that was set to expire June 30.

Champaign council OKs 8 security cameras for U of I

CHAMPAIGN – The University of Illinois is adding to its already large network of hundreds of security cameras.

The Champaign City Council voted Tuesday night to allow the university to install eight more cameras at two busy intersections near campus. The cameras will go up at Sixth and John streets and Fourth and Green streets in the next six months to a year.

The school already has more than 1,440 security cameras and The (Champaign) News-Gazette reported that number will grow by 200 this year.

Illinois couple convicted of kidnapping child sentenced

SPRINGFIELD – An Illinois couple has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for kidnapping and transporting a minor across state lines with intent to engage in sexual activity.

Thirty-seven-year-old Nicole and 46-year-old Calvin Eason were sentenced Tuesday by Chief U.S. District Judge James E. Shadid, who also ordered each to serve a lifetime term of supervised release. In December, a federal jury in Peoria found Nicole Eason of Danville guilty of the charges. Calvin Eason of Westville pleaded guilty in November.

Prosecutors alleged the Easons participated in an online discussion board with adoptive parents seeking new homes for children they no longer wanted or couldn’t care for. The Easons allegedly convinced one couple to bring a child to Illinois who was abused. Prosecutors say the Easons kidnapped a second child in 2008.

NEW YORK – Donald Trump launched a blistering attack Wednesday on Hillary Clinton’s record and character, slamming his presidential rival as a “world class liar” who raked in personal profits from her tenure at the State Department. The billionaire businessman claimed, “She gets rich making you poor.”

Trump’s broadside marked his opening salvo in a general election faceoff with Clinton that has already turned bruising and deeply personal. The presumptive Republican nominee called Clinton the “most corrupt” person to ever run for president and accused of her of spreading “death, destruction and terrorism” while serving as the nation’s top diplomat.

Clinton, campaigning in North Carolina, called Trump’s charges “outlandish lies.”

“He’s going after me personally because he has no answers on the substance,” Clinton said. “All he can try to do is try to distract us.”

Trump’s tone was pointed yet measured as he ticked through several of Republicans’ favorite critiques of Clinton, including her use of private email as secretary of state and her role in responding to the attacks on Americans in Benghazi, Libya. Several of his claims were inaccurate or exaggerated, including incorrectly saying she wants to spend hundreds of billions to resettle Middle Eastern refugees in the U.S. Wednesday’s address came at a pivotal moment for Trump’s presidential campaign.

The political novice has struggled with the

transition to a general election race, getting bogged down by self-created controversies and failing to invest in the staff and infrastructure needed for the fall campaign.

Earlier this week, Trump abruptly fired his campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, a move widely viewed as an acknowledgment of a need to recalibrate his organization. A new fundraising report released hours after Lewandowski’s firing underscored how much ground Trump has to make up: He started June with just $1.3 million in the bank, a stunningly paltry amount for a major party nominee.

Even as Trump blasted Clinton, he returned to some of the core themes that first powered his surprising presidential campaign. He railed against professional politicians and urged Americans to seize an opportunity to shake up a “rigged” system.

“This election will decide whether we’re ruled by the people or the politicians,” Trump said, standing before a friendly audience in a ballroom at his hotel in New York’s SoHo neighborhood.

While he assailed Hillary Clinton in personal terms, Trump did not make any mention of former President Bill Clinton’s indiscretions, despite raising those issues earlier in the campaign.

The real estate mogul did make a direct appeal to supporters of Clinton’s primary rival Bernie Sanders, reminding voters that the Vermont senator, too, has raised questions about her judgment. Like Trump, Sanders also generated enormous enthusiasm among voters frustrated with Washington.

ANOTHER VIEW

Illinois hides illness within Obamacare regulation Illinois seems to be working its way from the Affordable Care Act to the Unaffordable Care Act, and state regulators are not helping.

UnitedHealthcare already announced that it no longer would participate in Illinois’ Affordable Care Act health insurance exchange, called Get Covered Illinois. Costs were higher and participants were sicker than anticipated, so the health insurer – which, in 2016, offered Obamacare plans in 34 states – was cutting back for 2017 to three states, and Illinois will not be one of them.

In April, the insurers who will be participating in the Illinois health insurance exchange had to tell the Illinois Department of Insurance what their rates would be in 2017. So what’s the bad news?

They won’t say. If other states’ announced hikes are a good predictor of ours, Illinois residents could see rates increase by roughly 50 percent.

The department’s acting director, Anne Melissa Dowling, will not release the 2017 rate information until its mandatory publication date of Aug. 1. She considers the rates to be exempt from the Illinois Freedom of Information Act. So why should you care?

The Aug. 1 release is about a month before the state regulators issue their report on the rates. If the public or the public watchdog groups want to react to the rates, there is little time to do so.

Thirty-one of the nation’s states already have released the information, including our neighbors to the east and west. When consumer groups get access to the rate info, they usually are able to push back and get rate hikes reduced.

Illinois should be transparent about the coming health insurance rates.

Now that Obamacare forces people into the insurance pool or taxes them because they are not, the state is obligated to help control consumer costs.

The true importance of women Most of us can look around and appreciate much of what has been given to us. Maybe it’s family, talent, a job or a roof over our heads and food on the table.

I say most of us, but many, too, struggle with life and with gratitude. The world can seem broken beyond any hope of repair, and us marred along with it. People drown in these kinds of feelings.

And yet, the world needs people who can see a way toward light.

I think often of a message Pope Benedict XVI handed me just a few months before stepping aside.

Addressed to all the women of the world, it concluded: “Women of the entire universe, whether Christian or nonbelieving, you to whom life is entrusted at this grave moment in history, it is for you to save the peace of the world.”

The peace of the world! And, man, could we use some peace.

Last week, I spent a few days on the campus of my alma mater, the Catholic University of America, for a leadership conference for 300 young Catholic women from every state in the union. Called GIVEN, it was “a response to Pope Francis’ plea for a deeper understanding and activation of the unique gift of women in the Church and the world.”

One woman from Alabama told

VIEWS Kathryn Jean Lopez me: “This forum could not have come at a better time. ... (W)omen are under attack. Women are being lied to. They are being told that their feminine gifts are a hindrance and that they should be suppressed.

In our world, fertility, receptivity, empathy and gentleness are seen as weaknesses. ... I now truly understand feminine genius and I refuse to accept the counterfeit.”

Another from New Mexico told me: “Women don’t have it very easy in our modern culture. We get caught up in this pressure to control our lives; we are constantly being told we must be strong, independent and, in many ways, selfish. This conference contradicts ... this pressure of society. It focuses on the gift that woman IS, not what she does. ... It encourages us ... to be unashamed of who we are [and] to be fearless and bold with our tender hearts.”

And yet another quoted John Paul II to me: “Without the contribution of women, society is less alive, culture impoverished, and peace less stable. Situations where women are prevented from developing their full potential and from offering the

wealth of their gifts should, therefore, be considered profoundly unjust, not only to women themselves but to society as a whole.”

She added: “Our culture is plagued by immense suffering and in need of love, the healing love which women are uniquely able to give. Our culture needs women to return it back to a priority of love. ... At a time in our culture when femininity is outright denied and rejected, women need to be affirmed in the truth of their very being, the goodness of their femininity – for their own flourishing and that of those around them.”

A celebration of the natural differences between men and women allows for a reality check that may just make things better. We need motherly hearts to tend to wounds, whether they’re from terror in Orlando or just the everyday fears and struggles that drive people to isolation, depression, anger, alienation and violence.

A woman from New York described the GIVEN week as “whirlwind of love and grace.” Just a breeze could do a world of good in all 50 states.

Many get the pink slip more than once along the way.

Plainfield Central graduate Derek DeYoung said he was surprised when it happened to him, but he understands

baseball is a business. And his release from the Oakland Athletics’ organization is not altering his stance. He still will tell you the three years with the A’s were “the best years of my life.”

DeYoung, who lives at his family’s home in Plainfield, is pitching these days with the Schaumburg Boomers in the Frontier League. He was in Joliet last weekend for a three-game series against the Joliet Slammers at Silver

Cross Field. He relieved in the Saturday game, allowing one run in 22⁄3 innings and striking out four.

“Those three years with the Oakland A’s were a lot of fun,” DeYoung said. “I got released after last season, and it did kind of surprise me. I thought I was still in their plans.

“But I had Tommy John surgery on my elbow in 2014 and missed that entire season. Then I was trying to get back

last year and pitched only 11 innings.”

Now with the Boomers, things are heading back in a positive direction.

“I am trying to get it back,” he said.

“My velo (velocity) is down a little, and so is my command. But it’s a little better considering where I was.

“I’m enjoying this league. I’m having a blast. It’s a great time. It’s a nice

a complete-game two-hitter. The only other Slammer to get a hit was Charlie White, who doubled to lead off the contest. It was just the second time this month that the Slammers had been held to one run or less.

Meanwhile, the Slammers received their fifth-straight quality start, and second from Sean Townsley, who allowed five hits and two runs while striking out five in six innings. But unlike the previous four, which led to wins, Joliet fell for just the fourth time in its last 16 games.

league to play in. There are nice stadiums, and it’s good competition. I’m 24, and I’m playing baseball every day. It’s great.”

DeYoung graduated from Plainfield Central in 2010 and moved on to Oakton Community College in Skokie.

The right-hander always could bring some heat despite his relatively slender frame – the Boomers list him at 6-foot-2, 185 pounds – but it wasn’t until his two years at Oakton that professional scouts took serious looks. The A’s selected him in the 18th round in 2012, and he signed.

“I had a feeling I was going to go in the draft out of Oakton,” DeYoung said. “It was a dream come true.”

That spring, DeYoung had finished 8-4 with a 2.85 ERA and struck out 104 batters in 752⁄3 innings. His stuff, which includes a curve and changeup to go with the fastball, was electric.

“My fastball was in the mid-80s in high school – and then, all of a sudden, I found it, and my velocity just came,” he said. “I was consistently throwing 90-93 (mph) and touching 95 before I had the Tommy John surgery.”

DeYoung’s healthy season in affiliated ball was 2013. Pitching for Beloit, Oakland’s team in the Class A Midwest League, he went 8-5 with a 4.22 ERA. He appeared in 27 games, starting 16. He recorded two saves and allowed 118 hits and 41 walks while striking out 83 in 113 innings.

Joliet concludes its brief series with Windy City at 7:05 p.m. today before returning home Friday to Silver Cross Field to kick off a three-game set against Lake Erie.

“Kevin’s a friend,” DeYoung said.

“I believe he was hurt earlier this year. If and when he is healthy, they probably will have him at Beloit.”

For now, Duchene is listed on the roster of Oakland’s affiliate in the Arizona Rookie League.

After his release, DeYoung contacted two of his Oakton coaches – head coach Bill Fratto and former Oakton pitching coach TJ Nall – about finding a job. Nall is the bench coach for the Boomers, and Fratto is a Boomers assistant coach. They suggested he

give Schaumburg a try.

“I didn’t get a call from any affiliated organizations,” he said.

For Schaumburg, DeYoung has been in 13 games, all in relief, and is 0-0 with a 2.66 ERA. He has worked 20 1⁄ 3 innings, allowing 17 hits and 12 walks while striking out 20.

“I feel like I’m 100 percent now,” he said. “I just need to get my velocity back up and keep throwing strikes. I usually throw 1-2 innings at a time.

We’re trying to build up my arm.

Hopefully, I’ll get another shot in affiliated ball some day.”

DeYoung was an excellent pitcher at Plainfield Central, but also one of the best hitters – and best power hitters – in the Joliet area.

“I take pitcher’s B.P. (batting practice) now, that’s it,” he smiled. “I sure do miss hitting.”

Looking ahead to the offseason, DeYoung said, “I may have to find a job.” Regardless, he likely will reserve some time to pursue another interest. He also was a basketball player in high school.

“I still play a little basketball in the offseason,” he said.

Athletic interests run in the family. DeYoung’s younger brother, Mark, also a former baseball and basketball player at Plainfield Central, graduated in the spring from Judson University in Elgin, where he played baseball.

As for Derek, the goal is to land another shot in affiliated ball. Failing that, however, there is nothing wrong with enjoying life in the Frontier League.

CRESTWOOD – The Joliet Slammers found themselves in an unusual spot Wednesday.

With a road victory over Windy City, the Slammers would move past the Thunderbolts and into the outright lead of the Frontier League’s East Division.

And in a contest that was reflective of a clash between two squads contending for the division lead, things were tight during the first part of the showdown.

But Windy City, using a strong pitching performance from Clay Chapman, moved in front for good with a run in the sixth before adding five insurance runs in the next inning to cap-

ture a 7-1 victory over the Slammers at Standard Bank Stadium.

Both squads collected their initial runs during the fourth inning. Joliet (20-15) started the scoring when Boo Vazquez drew a walk, Carter Bell followed with a double, and Vazquez scored on a sacrifice fly by Marc Flores, who now has 28 RBIs on the season.

Manager Ron Biga’s Thunderbolts (21-13) answered with a run in the bottom of that inning when Coco Johnson walked, Ransom LaLonde singled and Johnson scored on a single by Blair Beck.

Joliet, which scored 30 runs on 41 hits in its three-game sweep over Schaumburg, struggled to get anything going offensively against Chapman, who threw

Svoboda adds a local touch to Broncos

dgoss@shawmedia.com Nancy Svoboda grew up a sports fan.

Makes sense. Her dad, Don Nichols, coached basketball and golf at Joliet East before becoming athletic director for the Kingsmen and then at Joliet West.

She was a cheerleader, ran track and played softball.

“When I was young, with my dad coaching, I got dragged to all the basketball games, so I kind of moved away from basketball myself,” she said.

Football was not in the picture, although she always has been a fan.

She graduated from Joliet East in 1981 and from Illinois State in 1986 with a degree in business administration. She was engaged, and her future husband informed her that he was moving to Denver.

“I graduated in May of ’86 and was married in October that year,” she recalled. “Within a month, we were getting ready to move to Colorado. I had never been to Colorado before meeting my husband. He said he was moving there, and I went to see it and fell in love with it.”

Fast forward about three decades, and there’s Nancy Svoboda as the highest-ranking female in the Denver Broncos organization. She is the senior vice president of human resources, the fourth name of the select group of four on the Broncos’ executive staff. The list is headed by none other than Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway, the executive vice president of football operations and general manager.

Svoboda was home last week for a Father’s Day visit.

She saw her dad in the hospital as he was in for what became gall bladder surgery. “I caught an earlier flight and walked into his room and surprised him,” she said.

She worked in retailing, in day care and at a marketing company in the Denver area.

“Having a business background helped me in my HR career,” said. “The business background made it easier.”

When the Broncos approached Svoboda in 2013 about filling their HR position, she was torn. She very much enjoyed the marketing company.

“It was a very emotional time,” she said. “It was a difficult decision. My boss at my previous job is a big Broncos fan, so he understood. It definitely has been a good move to

go to the Broncos.

“When I got into the NFL, I learned there are 32 clubs operating as individual businesses.

Pat Bowlen, our owner, makes it like family. His organization is built on integrity and doing it the right way.”

The Broncos, of course, have been a successful franchise through the years. From the standpoint of working for a winner, however, Svoboda’s

timing was impeccable.

“We went the Super Bowl that first year and lost big to Seattle,” she said. “But we won last year in Super Bowl 50 (over Carolina). Two of the three years we’ve been in Super Bowls, and we won three divisional titles and two AFC championships.”

There was something else special about last season – Denver quarterback Peyton Manning’s last hurrah in the NFL. Being so close to all of that may trump Svoboda’s most cherished personal sports memories, but they are keepers all the same.

“At Washington Junior High, we won state in sixth grade,” she recalled. “I was on the 440-yard relay that has a record that never will be broken. We set the record, and after that they retired the event.

They went to meters.

“I also did the 440-yard run at state but didn’t place.”

Another lasting memory came in her dad’s realm, the golf course.

“Two or three years ago, I went to Heritage Bluffs with my dad and finally beat him,” she said. “It was a proud moment for me.”

THE RING

Svoboda said her job is “to oversee the HR department of the front office staff and the stadium. There are over 1,000 people who work in the stadium on game day.”

Besides those duties, she enjoyed serving on the committee that designed the Broncos’ Super Bowl 50 rings.

“It was interesting and fun to watch Peyton’s (Manning’s) last year in the NFL, as well as the smile on his face when he opened the box and saw his ring,” Svoboda said.

She said she interacts with Elway “when John has HR-related questions. Whenever anything involves the coaches or players, what is happening on the field, he handles that.

When you do talk with him, he really listens. He appreciates your point of view.”

Gary Kubiak is Denver’s head coach. He replaced current Bears coach John Fox. While Svoboda was home, she watched Fox on sportscasts.

“It seems funny to see coach Fox on Chicago television stations,” she said. “He was at Denver my first two years. I got to know the HR person of

“It was a frigid day,” she said. “I said, ‘Can’t they brush off the seats?’

Well, they couldn’t. That was snow and ice frozen on the seats. It was frozen because of the moisture from the lake.”

The two teams will meet again at Soldier Field on Aug. 11 to kick off the 2016 exhibition schedule.

Meanwhile, the Broncos’ home, Mile High Stadium, turns up the volume.

Rose hasn’t been back to the All-Star Game since 2012 and has often had trouble just playing in the real games. He sat out all of the 2012-13 season, made it back for 10 games in 2013-14 and appeared in a little more than half the Bulls’ games in 2014-15.

“He has been through a lot with the injuries. You really have to admire how he continues to work and fight through everything that he’s been through,” Forman said.

“In moving forward, we thought the players we were getting in this deal made sense in what we’re trying to accomplish.”

And he could be worth the risk for a Knicks team that has struggled to generate offense.

The veteran Calderon and Grant, a first-round pick last year, were on the roster of a team that started well but faltered badly in the second half on the way to a 32-50 season. The Knicks are expected to transition to a quicker attack under Hornacek than the triangle offense they ran under Derek Fisher and Kurt Rambis, and Rose is better suited for that than anyone the Knicks had.

Carmelo Anthony and Kristaps Porzingis will benefit if Rose can do it, although they could miss Lopez in a frontcourt that was the team’s strength last season.

“It is extremely loud. It’s a great place,” Svoboda said. “My younger brother, Rich, came out for a game against Pittsburgh. He was in the lower bowl and did not sit the entire game. He was really impressed. He went to the Super Bowl with us as well.”

In her HR position, Svoboda gets to know the players and everyone in the organization. “[Former Plainfield North allstate running back] Kapri Bibbs is on the practice squad, trying to get a spot on the roster,” Svoboda said.

“Michael Schofield [starting offensive tackle and a Sandburg graduate] is from the Joliet area, too.”

Ditto Svoboda. A local woman in the front office of an NFL organization indeed is a rarity.

NEW YORK – Derrick Rose was once writing a great NBA story, the hometown kid leading the Bulls to their greatest heights since Michael Jordan.

Then injuries set in, and Rose may never again play at that dazzling level.

The player he is now still could be an upgrade for the New York Knicks.

The Knicks acquired Rose from the Bulls on Wednesday, hoping the former NBA MVP can be their answer at point guard.

New coach Jeff Hornacek said recently the Knicks needed a point guard and Rose was one of the NBA’s best before multiple knee injuries slowed the former No. 1 pick’s career. He played in 66 games last season, his most in five years, and averaged 16.4 points.

“This is an exciting day for New York and our fans,” Hornacek said in a statement. “Derrick is one of the top point guards in the NBA who is playoff battle-tested. He adds a whole new dynamic to our roster and immediately elevates our backcourt.”

New York sent center Robin Lopez and guards Jose Calderon and Jerian Grant to the Bulls in the deal. The Knicks also received guard Justin Holiday and a 2017 second-round pick, and waived point guard Tony Wroten.

Rose, 27, struggled just to get on the court over the last four years, and the Bulls dealt him on the eve of the NBA draft with a year left on his contract.

“Derrick has meant a lot to this organization and to this city and to this team and has had to overcome a lot over the years with all the injuries to get back to the point he was,” Bulls general manager Gar Forman said. “But in putting our plan together, we felt as a first step this Derrick Rose really made sense for us.”

After missing the playoffs in a disappointing first season under Fred Hoiberg, the Bulls decided to move on without the player they selected with the top pick in the 2008 draft.

It seemed a perfect fit when Rose carried the Bulls to the top of the Eastern Conference in the 2010-11 regular season, earning MVP honors and leading the franchise to success it hadn’t enjoyed since Jordan took the Bulls to their last of six titles in 1998 – when they were coached by current Knicks President of Basketball Operations Phil Jackson.

But Rose wrecked his knee for the first time in the playoffs the following year and no longer has the speed that once made him one of the league’s most dynamic young stars and a seemingly

The Associated Press BOSTON – Brett Lawrie hit a goahead homer in the eighth inning after Melky Cabrera had a tying, two-run shot, lifting the resurgent White Sox over the Boston Red Sox, 8-6, Wednesday night.

Cabrera went 4 for 5 with four RBIs, and Todd Frazier hit his 21st homer – a two-run drive – for the White Sox. The Sox have won three of the first four games in this series against Boston, one of the AL’s top teams this season. The White Sox (36-36) are back to .500 after having their strong start derailed by a 10-26 stretch before this series at Fenway Park.

Xander Bogaerts had three hits and three RBIs, and Hanley Ramirez hit a solo homer after being dropped in the order for Boston.

Dan Jennings (3-1) got four outs for the win. Zach Duke got the final three for his first save and third of his career.

Cabrera tied it with a drive into the Sox’s bullpen off Koji Uehara (23). After Frazier struck out, Lawrie also homered against Uehara, hitting

Red Sox manager John Farrell shuffled the order after it scored two or fewer runs in three straight games for the first time this season, flipping Ramirez to seventh and Chris Young up to fifth.

CHICAGO – Hitters are adjusting to Jake Arrieta. Now the Cubs ace has to counter.

Arrieta labored through five innings, Michael Wacha pitched into the seventh for his first win in nearly two months and the St. Louis Cardinals roughed up the Cubs’ bullpen in a 7-2 victory Wednesday.

Aledmys Diaz hit a two-run home run, and Matt Carpenter had a two-run double in a five-run sixth after Arrieta (11-2) departed.

“It’s adjusting the game plan slightly,” Arrieta said. “Just going a different route and being aggressive early and putting the hitter in a hole versus being in 1-0, 2-0 counts. That’s what they want. They’re taking the first pitch hoping I’m outside the strike zone.

“I’ll adjust accordingly.”

The Cardinals won their eighth straight road game – their longest streak since 1982 – and completed their first three-game sweep at Wrigley Field since 1988. They had a patient approach, drawing four walks off Arrieta and making the reigning NL Cy Young Award winner throw 106 pitches.

“We grinded one through nine,” Carpenter said. “Even Wacha had a pretty long at-bat (seven pitches) against him.”

The fifth inning was a prime example. A single and two walks loaded the bases with one out when Stephen Piscotty hit a grounder to third. Cubs second baseman Ben Zobrist’s relay throw to first was a one-hopper, and first baseman Anthony Rizzo couldn’t dig it out for the double play, and two runs scored on the error.

“Jake struggled through the five, but could have got out of it with nothing, and we could have moved it along

in a different way,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. “But that play really gave them some momentum, and their guy pitched well.”

Wacha (3-7) allowed two hits until rookie Willson Contreras’ two-out, tworun homer in the seventh ended his day. He snapped a seven-game skid.

Contreras replaced Miguel Montero an inning earlier after the catcher twisted his right knee. The Cubs had three hits and several mental and defensive miscues.

The Cubs entered the series with a 12½-game lead over second-place St. Louis in the NL Central. But the Cardinals, who won 100 games last season before falling to the Cubs in the playoffs, showed their mettle.

Cardinals C Yadier Molina could be starting with an all-Cubs infield at the All-Star Game. The latest NL voting released Wednesday had Molina with a slight lead over San Francisco’s Buster Posey. The Cubs’ Rizzo, Zobrist, Kris Bryant and Addison Russell continued to lead at their infield positions.

Maddon brought pink shorts and blue socks for the “Short Shorts” theme flight to Miami after the game. There was only one rule for footwear.

“If you’re wearing sandals, you have to have painted toenails,” Maddon said.

Hawks’ Kane wins Hart Trophy as NHL’s MVP

LAS VEGAS – After Patrick Kane added three more awards to his overflowing trophy case, he took a moment to appreciate his new place in American hockey history.

The Blackhawks’ NHL scoring champion won the Hart Trophy on Wednesday night, becoming the first player born and trained in the U.S. to be named the league’s most valuable player.

Kane also claimed the Ted Lindsay Award after his fellow players recognized him as the game’s most outstanding player at the league’s annual postseason awards show in Las Vegas.

He even accepted the Art Ross Trophy in recognition of leading the league with his 106-point season – another first for an American player.

“I definitely feel very fortunate,” Kane said. “It’s amazing to me that there’s no American that’s ever won the scoring title or the MVP award, because there’s been so many great American players. You can go right up and down the list, guys like (Chris) Chelios, Brian Leetch, Mike Modano, Joe Mullen, Jeremy Roenick, guys that have had great careers. I don’t know if I was lucky or fortunate to be in that position, but it’s pretty amazing to see some American record you hold now.

It’s pretty exciting.”

Kane began his remarkable season under the cloud of a sexual assault allegation made against him in his

native Buffalo area last summer. The Erie County District Attorney’s office eventually declined to move forward on the case in November, claiming it was rife with reasonable doubt.

Kane was the runaway winner of the Hart, getting 121 of the 150 firstplace votes. Sidney Crosby finished second with 11 first-place votes, while Dallas’ Jamie Benn was third.

Only 27 years old, Kane already has staked out a spot among the best American players in hockey history, while winning three Stanley Cups with the Blackhawks, although they lost in the first round of the postseason this year.

“It’s been quite a ride, obviously,” Kane said. “A lot of great moments along the way. I feel like at 27 right now, hopefully, there’s some more in the cards.”

Kane’s linemate with the Hawks, Artemi Panarin, won the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie after scoring 77 points in 80 games. The 24-yearold Russian beat out No. 1 draft pick Connor McDavid of Edmonton, whose outstanding debut was shortened by a broken collarbone.

Kane and Panarin credited each other for their statistical success, along with linemate Artem Anisimov.

“It goes without saying how our chemistry developed over the year and how much fun we had playing with each other,” Kane said. “There’s no doubt (Panarin) was a huge part of my success. I’ll take it one step further and say Anisimov was a huge part as well.”

The Rev. Genevieve Brown feels God healed her for a purpose

JOLIET – Somewhere in the Rev. Genevieve Brown’s mind, a clock began ticking down: five, four, three.

Way up in the right-hand corner, Brown saw lights. The glory of God was shining down, Brown said. She recalled saying aloud, “God, I know you’re not through with me yet. I know there’s something you want me to do.”

And then the clock went back up: three, four, five. Brown puts it this way: “I was two ticks away from eternity. I went from critical to miracle.”

Brown, the treasurer and past president for Mended Hearts, a support group for heart patients that meets monthly at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center, is certain she experienced a miracle during her last heart procedure in July 2015.

That’s despite spending 38 days in the hospital, requiring blood transfusions during her recovery and needing supplemental oxygen since then, Brown said.

But then, Brown feels she’s been a miracle for some time.

“I’ll start with the fact I have 11 stents in my heart,” Brown said.

Persistent heart trouble

Brown had triple bypass surgery May 5, 1995, but her heart kept forming blockages over the years, despite medication, which is how she ended up with 11 stents, she said.

“I finally told my cardiologist that I was tired and wasn’t going to have any more bypass surgery,” Brown said. “And then the pains came again.

I’m the type of person that will take [nitroglycerin] and everything before I’ll go to the ER.” When the pain returned, Brown was scheduled to officiate a funeral.

Brown said she took three nitroglycerin tablets, went to the funeral (“Because I keep my word,” she said) and then went home and called her cardiologist, Dr. Daniele De Girolami of Minooka, who was not available.

“Ten minutes later, his office called and said, ‘Get to the ER now,’ ” Brown said.

After an angiogram, Brown learned she had two more blockages, and her mitral valve was leaking. But before she could have surgery for those

problems, Brown needed surgery to remove the blockage in her carotid artery.

“It was 80 percent blocked,” Brown said. “They said, ‘You cannot have surgery until we fix the carotid artery – otherwise, you’ll stroke.’ ” Brown previously had one ministroke, so this was sobering news. But she had the procedure on her carotid and agreed to the heart surgery.

Wanting to be prepared on all levels, Brown wrote her obituary in advance of the procedures and then gathered her five adult children in her hospital room for a prayer service before the heart surgery.

The following day, Brown said she returned to the operating room for a pacemaker because her heart still was

Somewhere in the midst of these procedures, Brown said, she saw angels circling her bed and a nurse saying, “She’s not going to make it.”

And then Brown saw the clock and had her miracle.

Son, cardiologist respond

Steve Evans of Joliet, Brown’s oldest son, said he was present the day Brown had this experience, but he didn’t hear the words from the nurse his mother had heard. But Evans did say it was “touch and go” with his mother from the start.

Evans also believes Brown had the experience she described and praised

his mother’s faith in God. “She is an amazing woman,” Evans said. “I call her my hero.”

De Girolami said Brown is an instrument of God’s grace in his life and called her his “sister in Christ,” whom he loves dearly, as he does her family. It was Brown who gave De Girolami the spiritual wake-up call that changed his life.

He called Brown’s experience a miracle, from God to her.

“She has an unquenchable faith in the Lord,” De Girolami said. “Her faith is strong, and it’s mighty. It was given to her by God, and she has this unbelievable, unquenchable thirst for the Lord, and that’s what I’ve known about her these last 28 years. She witnessed things she could not explain so she could glorify God further.

“It gave her more faith in something that had already been known to her, but in a way that was supernatural and, I think, shook her to the very depth of faith – not giving her more faith, but giving her a sense of who Christ is, a glimpse of that which is inexplicable, the miracle that is Christ.”

Bessette has served as president and CEO of DePaul Cristo Rey High School in Cincinnati since 2009, the year it was founded. The school has grown from an idea to more than 280 students from across the city and a staff of 50. There have been two graduating classes at DPCR, with all students being accepted into college.

JOLIET – Five Sisters of St. Francis of May Immaculate (Joliet Franciscan Sisters) celebrated their jubilee at the Cathedral of St. Raymond in Joliet.

Sister Judith Kurry, celebrating her 80th jubilee, served as a preschool and grade school teacher for most of her 80 years of ministry. Her most recent position was at the Franciscan Learning Center. She lives at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home in Joliet.

Sixtieth-year jubilarian Sister Mary Jean Morris began in the field of education, then spent numerous years in congregation service. She served as a counselor in the early 1980s, then as president from 1992 to 2000. Morris then spent 10 years working among the Glenmary Missionaries in Mississippi before returning to Joliet.

Also celebrating her 60th jubilee is Sister Joanne Marusa. She served as a principal for many years. She taught and directed programs for newly arrived immigrants to the United States before serving in congregational service as general secretary from 1992 to 2000.

Sister Patricia Skowronski, celebrating 50 years, began her ministry in education, then moved into health care ministry. She served many years as a medical technician. Today, Skowronski helps the sisters in residence at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home.

Fiftieth-year jubilarian Sister Margaret Noser spent many years helping the poor of Appalachia. She then ministered to the poor for 40 years in to Brazil. She has also served as the formation director and regional superior for the Joliet Franciscan Sisters living in Brazil.

FAITH BRIEFS JCA’s Waldron is the Kiwanis Club May Student of the Month

JOLIET – Joliet Catholic Academy President/Principal Dr. Jeffrey Budz announced that Jay Waldron was the Kiwanis Club May Student of the Month.

With a 4.48 GPA, Waldron recently was honored by the Joliet Chamber of Commerce as one of the top 25 students in his graduating class.

He is a member of the National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society, holding Jay the offices of secretary Waldron of Mu Alpha Theta (Math National Honor Society), co-captain of the Scholastic Bowl team, and vice president of the Spanish Club.

He recently was named an Illinois State Scholar, received a bronze medal on the National Spanish Exams, and received an honorary certificate in pharmacy from Midwestern University and Walgreen’s Pharmacies Company Careers.

32 Shift workers need regular sleep schedule Dear Readers: In yesterday’s column, I discussed the health hazards of shift workers – particularly those who work evening and night shifts. More than 9 million people in the United States are shift workers.

When I was in medical training, boy, was I a shift worker. During my internship, every other weekend I would wake up on Saturday morning and drive to the hospital. The next time my head touched a pillow was Monday evening. In between, it was nonstop.

I’m glad those days are over for me. And that they’re also over for today’s interns, who get a lot more sleep than I and my colleagues used to. That’s a good thing, given what we now know about how sleep deprivation affects a person’s ability to think – and how important it is for doctors to be able to think.

Nevertheless, I’ll admit I sometimes reminisce with colleagues whom I trained with, and compare our experience to that of today’s trainees. When we reminisce, we refer to ourselves as the “iron men” (few women were in medicine then). And we refer to the experience of today’s trainees as “lifestyle-intensive.”

Some shift workers have trouble concentrating and focusing during the evenings or nights they are working. Once, when I was an intern and feeling like a zombie, I asked a well-rested colleague how I appeared to him. He replied, “You’re coherent, but that’s about it.”

Sleep specialists I talk to recommend what my grandmother would have recommended: a strong cup of coffee, early in the shift. (My grandmother also might have said, “You need to be a sleep specialist to give such advice?”)

However, caffeine doesn’t do it for everyone. Another option is a stimulant medicine called modafinil. One careful study

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff of more than 200 shift workers showed 74 percent of those given this medicine, compared to just 36 percent of those given a sugar pill, had at least minimal improvement in their ability to concentrate. However, many of them remained impaired despite the treatment.

It is really important for shift workers who need to get their sleep during the daytime to do the following: • Work with your employer to make your shift schedule steady: not nights for several days, then evenings, then nights, then days. Make it the same shift every day for several weeks.

• Make sure your bedroom has strong light-blocking shades and no sunlight creeps into the room from around the edges of the shades. Even a little sunlight can discourage your brain from sleeping.

• Reduce any noise. For many shift workers, that involves the use of soft rubber earplugs.

• If you can’t sleep for at least seven consecutive daytime hours, try at least to get four hours shortly after arriving home, and another three to four hours later in the day.

• If you can’t sleep the minute you arrive home – for example, if you have to help get the kids off to school – then begin sleeping right afterward.

• Try to make your sleep schedule a regular one, starting and ending at the same time(s) each day.

I have fought obesity all of my adult life, and my weight has yo-yoed over the years. My problem is, when I go to the doctor’s office and I am taken to the exam area, the scale is right out in the open where other patients come and go as well as all the office personnel.

Mind you, I don’t care if I am weighed in the presence of people walking around – if they don’t peek. However, when the medical assistant is done weighing me, she reads the scale out loud. I have felt humiliated when other patients are walking past. I have put up with this for years.

Recently, this medical assistant weighed me and I just knew she was going to “announce” my weight. This time there was a man I could tell was a patient, standing nearby at the reception window staring intently at me getting weighed. Because I was sure the M.A. was going to say it out loud, I started to cough to try to muffle the sound of her voice. It worked, but then she acted irritated because of my coughing, so she repeated it loudly. I was very embarrassed, to say the least. When the doctor saw me, I was afraid to say anything as I didn’t want to get anybody in trouble.

I graduated from a medical assistant school many years ago and I remember the registered nurse who was our instructor taught us to never say out loud somebody’s weight when you weigh him or her. It only makes common sense.

I no longer want to go back to that doctor’s office.

Do you have any advice for me when this happens again? I say again because it happens at other doctor’s offices I visit as well. I am at a loss here. I would appreciate your input. – Still

In this deal, for example, South is in three no-trump. After West leads the heart king, how should the play proceed?

You would prefer to be in five diamonds or five clubs, which, after a heart lead, requires one out of two finesses to work. However, unless you are sure that three no-trump is hopeless, if you spend your time playing in five of a minor, you will be a big loser in the long run.

South starts with only five top tricks: two spades, one heart, one diamond and one club. He can establish the extra winners that he needs if he takes a winning minor-suit finesse.

However, if his chosen finesse fails, the opponents will surely cash a fatal number of hearts.

As I pointed out earlier this week, the technical play is first to cash the diamond ace (you have more diamonds than clubs); then, if the king doesn’t drop, to finesse in clubs.

Here, that would have worked.

Instead, the original South won trick two with dummy’s heart ace and led the club queen. He hoped that if East had the king, he would either cover an honor with an honor, or at least think about it. But when East played low in tempo, declarer won with his ace and took the diamond finesse. Now he went down two.

How did East know what to do?

From the point count. Since West was marked with his three heart honors, South had to have the club ace.

So, East could anticipate the actual position. Well defended.

SOUTHEAST JOLIET SANITARY DISTRICT ORDINANCE NO. 33 AN ORDINANCE AMENDING ORDINANCE NO. 30 REGARDING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF RATES FOR SEWER SERVICE AND WATER SERVICE INCLUDING RATES FOR EMERGENCIES.

AN ORDINANCE AMENDING ORDINANCE NO. 31 REGARDING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF RATES FOR CUSTOMERS WHO UTILIZE WATER ONLY OR SEWER ONLY PROVIDED BY THE DISTRICT. AN ORDINANCE PROVIDING FOR AMENDMENT OF ORDINANCE NO. 31 REGARDING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF RATES FOR CUSTOMERS WHO UTILIZE WATER ONLY OR SEWER ONLY PROVIDED BY THE DISTRICT FOR THE SOUTHEAST JOLIET SANITARY DISTRICT, JOLIET, WILL COUNTY, ILLINOIS. WHEREAS, the Southeast Joliet Sanitary District is a Sanitary District established in accordance with Chapter 42, Section 411 et seq of the Illinois Revised Statutes now known as 70 ILCS 2805.1 et seq; WHEREAS, the District has adopted Ordinance No. 3 for the regulation and the operation of the sewer system; and WHEREAS, in accordance with Chapter 42, Section 418 of the Illinois Revised Statutes now known as 70 ILCS 2805/7, the District shall have the power to provide for the collection and disposal of the sewage thereof and to construct and maintain conduits and or pipes for this purpose and to establish rates for such sewer service; and WHEREAS, the District has adopted Ordinance No. 6 for the regulation and operation of the water system; and WHEREAS, in accordance with Chapter 42, Section 443b of the Illinois Revised Statutes now known as 70 ILCS 2805/32b, the District may acquire, purchase, or construct waterworks, and thereafter operate, improve and extend such waterworks; and WHEREAS, the Board of Trustees has determined that it is necessary for the public health and welfare to establish a system of rates for such sewer service and for such water service, including water emergencies; and WHEREAS, the Board of Trustees has determined that the rates or other matters as set out herein are necessary for the long term financial viability of the District and for the health and welfare of the public serviced by the District; and NOW, THEREFORE, Be and its is hereby ordained by the Board of Trustees of the Southeast Joliet Sanitary District as follows: ARTICLE 1 - AMENDMENT OF ORDINANCE 31 Ordinance Number 31 shall be amended only in the following ways upon enactment of this Ordinance Number 34 at the time it becomes effective under law.

ARTICLE 2 - AMENDMENT OF ARTICLE 3 WATER ONLY RATES OF ORDINANCE 31 ARTICLE 3 of Ordinance 31 is amended by the following additions: E. Water Meter Malfunction.

In the event the water meter malfunctions, the "water usage" or "quantity of water used" as used in Article 3, subparagraph B. herein, shall be determined by using an average. That average shall be calculated by taking the last 12 months' water usage while the meter was functioning normally, and dividing by 12 for an average monthly water usage. That average monthly usage shall then be used as the quantity of water used to determine the additional charge per month, for the period of time between the last water meter reading while the meter was functioning normally, and the time the malfunctioning meter is replaced.

ARTICLE 3 - VALIDITY OF ORDINANCE Section 1: All ordinances and parts of ordinances in conflict herewith be and the same are hereby repealed.

Section 2: All other portions of Ordinance 31 other than those specific additions herein, shall remain as they were prior to the adoption of this Ordinance 34.

Section 3: This Ordinance and every provision thereof, shall be considered separable, and the invalidity of any section, clause, provision or a part or portion of any section, clause, or provisions of this Ordinance shall not affect the validity of any other portion of this Ordinance.

ARTICLE 4 - ORDINANCE IN FORCE This Ordinance shall be in full force and effect after its passage, approval, and publication as provided by law.
