JJC business center closes because of state budget constraints

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – State budgets constraints affecting Joliet Junior College have led to the closing of its Small Business Development Center – but other options to help entrepreneurs will still be available.

Amy Murphy, the college’s corporate and community services director, was informed in May that the center would not receive any more funds until the state had a budget, according to JJC. Murphy is the director of the center.

For just under a year, Gov. Bruce Rauner and state lawmakers have been in a stalemate over approval of a new budget for the fiscal year that began July 1, 2015 – and ends June 30 of this year.

The center will be closed June 30 after being open for 30 years.

“We’re just very saddened by it. We wish the state would have come together

The center closing will impact on the local economy, Murphy said, but the college has a partnership with Service Corps of Retired Executives – or SCORE – and can direct clients to the College of DuPage’s still-active business development center, if needed.

Other options for clients are the Illinois Small Business Development Center at Governors State University and the Women’s Business Development Center in Aurora.

Some of the past successes of JJC’s Small Business Development Center included Bolingbrook business Hip Hop Fit, LuNajera Kitchen & Catering in Plainfield and Candace Learning Center in Minooka, according to the center’s website.

Murphy said other colleges and universities that are closing small-business centers include Waubonsee Community College and Illinois State University.

Fairmont District 89 board VP resigns

fsarver@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – The vice president of the Fairmont District 89 school board has resigned, citing disagreements with the board and the resignation of the superintendent.

Joseph Ryan said he sent his letter of resignation to the board Friday, which was also the last day of former Superintendent Sonya Whitaker’s tenure at the district.

Ryan, first elected to the board in 2009, said it was his time to leave and that the board has no interest in transparent communication or governance, which he defined as the board not intervening in the district’s daily operations.

“To me, this is a ship of fools right now. … Some of them are out in the dark right now, waiting for the iceberg to hit,” said Ryan, who was board president throughout Whitaker’s six-year tenure.

Ryan has criticized the board in the past, even going so far to allege Open Meetings Act violations against it and to

and put a budget together. … It’s hurting the business community is what it’s hurting,” Murphy said.

The development center is funded by the U.S. Small Business Administration, with funds through the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, JJC officials said.

When JJC board trustees approved a budget last week, college officials noted the closing of the center as part of several cost-saving measures to create a balanced budget. Uncertainty with state funding has led the college to form a committee to find ways to generate revenue.

Murphy said the center offered free services to help people start up their own businesses and expand those businesses when needed. According to the center’s website, it counsels almost 600 small businesses and entrepreneurial clients a year.

allege board President Katie Ulmer – who succeeded him as president – and board member Sylvia Dotson tried to get rid of Whitaker, which they both deny.

“He’s been giving me a hard time all year,” Ulmer said of Ryan.

Throughout the year, Ryan and Ulmer have clashed over district-issued credit cards, how attorneys should be used by the board, board policies and other issues.

Ryan has also argued with other board members, including Jeremy Burns in one dispute that caused a parent during public comment to criticize their behavior.

“I’m sitting here – these two gentlemen fighting like kids over a seat. … Y’all grown men,” said Tiffany Jenkins at the April 20 board meeting.

Ulmer disagreed with Ryan’s comments regarding the board’s governance and communication, saying governance is “doing the right thing” and that board members have the right to come into schools.

She also said no board member was trying to get rid of Whitaker, but that members were trying to get her to work with the board.

Ryan and Ulmer were also at odds over who had been communicative enough about board matters as board president.

Whitaker announced her resignation at the May 18 board meeting, the day after an agreement was approved between herself and Harvey District 152 to make her its new superintendent.

With Whitaker gone, the board is trying to find the next leader of the district and has interviewed three candidates thus far. The board is also looking for an interim business manager, as David Holm will leave June 30.

A frequent target of Ryan’s criticism this year was what he said were mounting legal fees from the board’s new attorneys, Scariano, Himes and Petrarca.

He said Monday that the board was using the attorneys to investigate Whitaker, who he has supported. Ulmer said Whitaker was being investigated because complaints were filed against her, but declined to explain further. “[Whitaker would] be still there, I’m sure, if it wasn’t for all this stuff going on,” Ryan said.

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Mayor Bob O’Dekirk announced Monday that the city of Joliet has won the appeal in the Evergreen Terrace case.

The city will try to take control of the 156-apartment, low-income housing in August.

O’Dekirk said the decision by a federal appeals court was handed down Friday and likely means the end of the Evergreen Terrace legal battle, which has been going on since 2005.

“We do believe at this point that this will be the end of litigation,” O’Dekirk said at a City Council workshop session while announcing the decision. “The legal counsel as well as HUD [U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development] have indicated to us that this is not a case the U.S. Supreme Court will likely hear.”

Evergreen Terrace management, however, issued a statement Monday night indicating that it held out hope while another lawsuit over the matter remains unsettled.

“We are currently reviewing our options, particularly in light of the fact that the separate case alleging the city’s violation of the Fair Housing Act remains pending,” the statement said.

City officials in past months had said they expected Evergreen Terrace ownership to appeal to the Supreme Court.

Joliet in late August 2015 paid $15 million – a price set by a federal grand jury – for Evergreen Terrace after winning the 10-year condemnation case to take control of the low-income hous-

ing project from its private owners.

The owners appealed the case, and HUD, which subsidizes rents at the complex, would not consent to city ownership until the appeal was decided. HUD issues Section 8 vouchers that pay the rent on the property, so the agency exerts strong control over Evergreen Terrace.

Joliet eyes expansion of downtown business tax

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – City officials hope to extend a special taxing district downtown to nearby commercial corridors.

If expanded, the property tax of 95 cents per $100 of assessed valuation would be added to commercial property on Cass, Collins and Chicago streets approaching the downtown business district.

Expanding the tax will help pay for future downtown development, including redesign of Chicago Street and the construction of a new plaza, city officials said.

Artificial field turf at Silver Cross Field, an addition aimed at making the city-owned stadium available for more sports and different events, could also

be financed with money from the extended tax, they said.

City Manager Jim Hock said the money would also be used to initiate economic development efforts on the east side.

“This helps facilitate those communities on Cass Street and Collins Street and more with economic development activities beyond strictly downtown,” Hock told the City Council at a workshop session Monday when the plan was presented.

A list of plans for the funds include matching grants for businesses in the corridors and streetscape improvements. But most of the planned uses appear aimed at downtown, including land acquisition for parking facilities and modern parking meters.

The city estimates extending the tax

to new areas would add about $230,000 to the $400,000 the tax generates now.

The plan is for the council to vote on Sept. 20 whether to move forward on the proposal. If the council approves, a public hearing would be held the next month. The council would not give final approval until December, but that would leave time to put the tax on next year’s property tax bills.

The council in October 2015 unanimously voted to drop a similar proposal to create special service areas in business districts throughout Joliet to fund city economic development efforts. The Joliet Regional Chamber of Commerce & Industry opposed the plan.

The special service area downtown was created in 1980 to fund economic development at a time when stores were leaving the traditional business

district and moving to the new indoor malls.

The downtown taxing district is up for renewal this year and would expire in August if the city does not keep it in place.

Economic Development Director Steve Jones said the proposed extension of the tax to adjacent commercial corridors reflects the connection those business districts have to the downtown area.

“If we were to get improvements for our downtown and not do anything for these fringe areas, would we be as successful as we could be?” he said to the council.

Jones said city staff would begin meeting with business property owners in the proposed areas to discuss the proposal.

fsarver@shawmedia.com Swimming pools – often the most fun solution to sweltering hot weather that comes in the summer months – have seen increased attendance this year at park districts throughout Will County.

Compared with last year, temperatures are higher – which means more people heading to park districts in Joliet, Plainfield, Lockport and New Lenox to cool off at either an outdoor or indoor pool, splash station or splash pad.

That was evident Monday as residents headed to Joliet Park District’s Splash Station Waterpark as temperatures reached the low 90s. Although they had to exit the pool after a storm that brought lightning with it swept through in early afternoon, there were still plenty of people enjoying the pool as the sun came back out after the rain had passed.

The Joliet Park District’s Splash Station Waterpark opened June 3 and has had one of the best starts to the summer season, said Blaine Kline, the park’s Aquatics and Stadium superintendent.

“It’s the second-best start we’ve had in the past 10 years. This is probably the best one in five years,” Kline said.

And a great start to pool attendance thanks to hot weather means more revenue for the park district.

Rialto bringing back parts of unfinished marquee

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The marquee that Joliet didn’t want is coming to town – at least an unfinished version of it.

The Rialto Square Theatre is bringing in parts of the marquee that was stopped mid-construction when an unveiling of the design in late 2014 generated an opposition movement.

Interim Executive Director Jack Ericksen said the sign should arrive this week.

He also said the Rialto is making progress in a fundraising effort to upgrade the existing marquee.

The plan is to put part of the new sign that says “Rialto Square Theatre,” along with an electronic message board,

on the back of the theater, which faces Scott Street. In the past, Rialto officials have noted the Scott Street side has decent exposure to traffic – both from vehicles and the Metra commuter rail lines.

The Rialto, however, still needs to raise money to install the rear sign and restore the old marquee that is on the theater. Total costs are estimated at $191,000 and the Rialto has raised about $48,000.

The combined restoration with partial use of the new sign was the resolution reached after the formation of an advisory committee in the aftermath of a controversy that resulted in scrapping the original marquee plan, refunding $350,000 to the donor and paying Landmark Sign Group about $200,000 for work already done.

Ericksen, who also is chief fundraiser for the Rialto, is upbeat and sees a willingness among donors to contribute to the theater again.

“Some of the positives at the Rialto give donors confidence that we’re going in the right direction,” he said.

The Rialto, troubled by controversy and financial setbacks since the marquee debacle, enjoyed a recent wave of goodwill during its 90th anniversary celebrations in May. Theater leadership also is charting a new course, with plans to hire third-party management after parting ways with general manager Randy Green in April.

“Once we put the Scott Street sign up with running lights, we’ll also recognize the major donors as often as possible for at least a one-year period,” Ericksen

said.

Major donors are those who contribute $20,000 or more.

First Midwest Bank has made a $20,000 contribution to the sign project.

The Rialto also got a $28,000 grant from the Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program, which is administered by the National Park Service.

Joliet car dealer Terry D’Arcy donated $4,000 to pay for the cost of transporting the unfinished marquee from Landmark Sign Group’s plant in Indiana.

The sign will be kept in storage until the Rialto has the money to install it, and the Rialto is getting help there, too, Ericksen said.

“It will be stored at Grate Signs [in Joliet],” he said. “Cheryl Grate has been wonderful about it.”

Lockport, state officials negotiating ways to reopen Lockport Gallery

mmallory@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – Negotiations are ongoing between the city of Lockport and the state of Illinois about a potential reopening of the Illinois State Museum Lockport Gallery.

Last fall, Gov. Bruce Rauner ordered closures of the Illinois State Museum system – including the Lockport Gallery – to save money amid the state’s budget crisis.

Lockport Mayor Steven Streit said Monday that he was part of a conference call Friday with representatives from both the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and Rauner’s staff. Streit said he proposed that the city pay for rent of the building and the state pay for utilities and staffing.

The state countered with an offer to pay only for staffing. Streit said he’s going to meet Monday or Tuesday with the owner of the historic Norton Building – which houses the museum on its first

floor – and a museum board member to determine how much each scenario would cost the city.

“The bottom line is we’re negotiating, but we can’t pay for everything,” Streit said. “The state is open to discussing it. I think we’re getting close.”

The talks come after the IDNR announced June 15 that the Illinois State Museum in Springfield, the Dickson Mounds Museum near Lewistown and the Research and Collections Center in Springfield would reopen July 2 with a $5 price of admission for adults.

The Illinois General Assembly’s Joint Committee on Administrative Rules voted June 14 to bring admission fees to the formerly free museums in hopes of creating new revenue.

“By setting the admission fee, working closely with the Illinois State Museum Board and Illinois State Museum Society, we feel we are setting the Museum on a more sustainable path for the future,” IDNR Director Wayne Rosenthal has said in a news release.

LOCAL BRIEFS JOLIET TOWNSHIP – A man was arrested Sunday after allegedly forcing his way into an Ingalls Park home.

Will County sheriff’s deputies were called to the 100 block of Jessie Street in Joliet Township and learned a man had forced Michael Ruiz his way inside, according to a statement released by Deputy Chief Rick Ackerson.

Once inside, the man threw a woman to the floor and demanded she give him his money back. When she tried to call 911, he took her cellphone and broke it, the statement said.

fied police when they saw two men leaving in a green Ford Escort. Joliet police located the vehicle and suspects in the 100 block of Arizona Avenue in Joliet, according to the statement.

Michael Ruiz, 38, of the 100 block of Arizona Avenue, was arrested on charges of home invasion, battery, criminal trespassing, disorderly conduct and vandalism. The other man was questioned and released without charges.

Police believe the incident stemmed from a failed drug transaction, the statement said.

JOLIET – A Joliet Junior College police officer has been charged with stealing gas from the school. Paul Jerantowski, 41, was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of theft about 8 a.m. Sunday at the campus, 1215 Houbolt Road, JJC Police Chief Pete Comanda said. Jerantowski, a 10-year JJC police veteran, has been placed on administrative leave pending termination.

“Several months back we started an investigation into fuel being taken from the pump on campus that is supposed to be used for official business, not personal vehicles,” Comanda said. “Sunday’s arrest is part of a larger investigation, and other charges could be forthcoming.”

The break-ins happened between 9 and 10 p.m. in the 700 block of Teal Drive, 700 block of Westwind Drive, 600 block of Bishops Gate and 2100 block of Tower Bridge Road, according to a police department news release.

The suspect forced open the front or side door of each house. Residents were home in two incidents, and the intruder fled after entering, the news release stated.

The suspect was described as a white man with brown hair and a heavy build. He was wearing a white T-shirt that had a red emblem on the back.

Bhaktimarga Swami, a Canadian-born Hare Krishna monk, stopped Monday in Joliet on his walk from New York City to San Francisco to promote a strong spiritual foundation. in May in Pennsylvania and plans to finish in early August in Nebraska.

Next year, he will make his way to California.

Swami has walked across Canada four times, and isn’t opposed to bat-

tling heat waves and severe weather all summer if it accomplishes his goal. He said it helps develop a sense of austerity.

“Being exposed [to the elements] is part of it,” Swami said. “Every day it’s

out and enjoy our facility,” Crisman said.

New Lenox Park District saw a little bit of an increase at its swimming facilities, but it wasn’t huge, said Lea Pipiras, the park’s deputy director of recreation.

The park district has two splash pads at Hibernia Park and Walker Country Estates, which is its newest one that opened last year, she said.

So far, the splash pads attendance is up 58 people compared with last year, which had 161 people attend the first week it opened in June, she said.

JOLIET – Bhaktimarga Swami sat calmly Monday morning as he rested in the grass of Joliet’s West Park with a water bottle at his side.

Known as the “Walking Monk,” Swami covers about 20 miles a day with only a pair of sandals separating his feet from the ground. He’s in the middle of the second leg of his journey from New York City to San Francisco.

“I started walking in Joliet today,” Swami said. “I found out the Illinois & Michigan Canal State Trail is here.

That’s a piece of paradise. You see a heron every few minutes.”

Swami hopes to promote a “greener,” healthier lifestyle in America – one that emphasizes strong morals and ethics. Through outreach efforts along his path, he spreads his message.

“My purpose is to make the statement that we need to simplify life,” Swami said. “In many ways this walk reaffirms what we should be doing.

Joliet hospital union files complaint about ‘boot camp’

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The nurses’ union at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center is objecting to a recent “boot camp” training it described as humiliating.

The emergency room training, according to the union, included forcing nurses to drink water without access to restrooms. The union said the training was disciplinary after certain patient satisfaction scores.

Hospital officials issued a statement saying participants found the training “a positive and productive experience.”

Chris Martin, spokesman with the Illinois Nurses Association, disagreed.

“The nurses view it as a punitive and humiliating experience,” he said.

The INA, which represents nurses at the hospital, has filed a petition with hospital management contending that the training session violated scheduling provisions in the union contract.

The INA put out a news release announcing the complaint and called for better collaboration to fix problems.

Born: June 3, 1925; in Braidwood Died: June 18, 2016; in Braidwood

LaVerne Howard Findlay Sr., age 82, of Wilmington, passed away peacefully, with his family by his side, Saturday, June 18, 2016, at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home in Joliet.

Born Jan. 12, 1934, in Wilmington, to the late Walker and Edna (nee Gilmour) Findlay. LaVerne retired from the Laborers Union, Local #75 and also farmed in the Grundy and Will County areas. He was a member of the Will County Threshermen Association, Central States Threshermen, Pontiac, and the Central Illinois Green Club. He enjoyed attending tractor shows throughout several counties. He was knowledgeable in restoring John Deere tractors and was always there to lend a helping hand.

Surviving are two daughters, Susan Syfert of Diamond and Sandy (John) Carley of Wilmington; two sons, Vern (Betty) Findlay Jr. of Wilmington and Billy Gordon of Carbon Hill; nine grandchildren, Dawn (David) Johnson, Brad Syfert, Brian (Amy) Syfert, Kristy Carley, Eric (Lorien) Carley, Bobby (Valerie) Findlay, Heaven Findlay, Kaleb Findlay and David (Melissa) Hahn; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, David (Betty) Findlay of Morris; six sisters, Barbara (Arthur) Briggs of Channahon, Sharon (Hollie) Whalen of Ritchie, Karen (Ron) Kollman of Wilmington, Becky (Bob) Crutchfield of St. Charles, Clara Ann “Sissy” (late Bill) Babel of Big Rock and Janet (Jim) Sage of Phoenix; several nieces and nephews; special friend, Jimmy Green of Wilmington; and his favorite waitress, “Lizard.”

He was born June 25, 1946, to the late Ekaterini and Athanasios Kourlesis in Patras, Greece, where he was raised and educated. He served in the Greek military for two years and then came to the United States to work as a tailor. Nick relocated to the Chicago area in the 1970s becoming the owner/operator of Central Dry Cleaners. Over the years, his business expanded with the addition of over a dozen locations throughout the Chicagoland area.

Robert R. Barcus, 97, passed away Saturday at the Joliet Community Hospice Home.

A decorated World War II veteran, Robert and his wife, Sylvia, recently celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary.

The couple spoke fondly of their anniversary celebration gathering with friends and family.

Robert joined the U.S. Army in 1943 and served as a tank gunner in the Battle of Omaha Beach. He also fought in the Battle of Hurtgen Forest and the Battle of the Bulge. He received a total of six awards for his service.

Earlier this year, Robert was presented with the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with a silver star for serving in five campaigns or major battles in World War II. The award, which was never given when he returned from service, was presented this past February by U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk during a surprise ceremony at the Willow Falls Senior Living Community in Crest Hill.

Robert and his wife returned to Normandy years after the war. He also took an Honor Flight to visit the World War II memorial in Washington, D.C., with his granddaughter in 2011.

Robert also had fond memories of working on the railroad. He began as a fireman on the Rock Island steam engines in 1942. He later became an engineer on diesel and steam engines and was promoted in 1966 to road foreman of engines and eventually worked for Metra when it took over the Rock Island Railroad’s commuter operations. When he retired in 1994 at the age of 75, Robert was Metra’s first 50-year employee.

Robert and his wife traveled the world together. He enjoyed spending time with his family, working on cars, watching “MASH” and “The Lawrence Welk Show.” He was once quoted as saying “There’s nothing wrong with getting old when you get good grandkids.” He had seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Sylvia; daughter, Mary Ann (Joe) Fabbre; his son, William (Mary Ann) Barcus; his beloved grandchildren, Joe (Alice) Fabbre, Jody (Brad) Woodley, John Boyd, Jennifer (Steve) Roake, Jeff Boyd, Julie (Bill) Adelmann and Robert Barcus; and his great-grandchildren, Anthony and Ashley Fabbre, Kendall and Kiley Adelmann and Gillian Roake.

Helen “Jean” (Baca) Smunt, 69, of Peru, passed away, Tuesday, June 14, 2016 at Tomahawk Hospital, Tomahawk, WI. Funeral services were at 7 p.m. Monday, June 20, 2016, at the Mueller Funeral Home, Peru, with Rev. Timothy Kenyon, pastor of St. John’s Lutheran Church officiating. Visitation was held 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Helen was born on Sept. 25, 1946, in Joliet, to John and Genevieve (Wiechec) Baca. She married Frank Smunt on May 31, 1969, at St. Joseph Church in Lockport. She worked as a registered nurse for 17 years and then was senior operations director for Interim Healthcare based out of Fort Lauderdale, FL. She was a member of UNOS-United Network for Organ Sharing, a nonprofit organization that coordinated U.S. organ transplant procurement and transplant program throughout the country. Helen gave her daughter, Tammy, a second chance at life again 10 years ago when she donated her kidney. She was also a member of the National Cancer Foundation and American Nurses Association.

Helen passed away doing what she loved, she was fishing in Tomahawk, WI, with her brother, a family tradition she devotedly carried on. She loved her home and outdoor spaces. Her yard was filled with beautiful flowers which brought her simple happiness.

Helen loved life, she was a true giver and a gregarious individual who was always there to share and help others.

Her clothes made her stylish and classy and her heart was full of warmth. She loved to travel. She had compassion for anyone and everything that crossed her path in life. No one ever arrived at her home without feeling welcome, loved, nor left hungry.

Helen had many hobbies including crafts, gardening, cooking, traveling, camping, fishing, candles and fashion.

She is survived by her husband, Frank; three children, Dawn (Eric) Bubelis of Denver,

Michelle Smunt of Peru and Tammy Smunt of Denver; four grandchildren; three brothers, Thomas (Barbara) Baca of Seneca, SC, Robert (Jodie) Baca of Eau Claire, WI, and Richard Baca of Joliet; two sisters, Mary Frances (Andrew) Kelly of Lockport and Deborah Massey of Braidwood; and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents.

CHICAGO – Dennis Hastert’s attorney said the former U.S. House speaker will report to a federal prison in southeastern Minnesota this week to begin serving a 15-month sentence in his hush-money case.

Washington, D.C.-based attorney Thomas Green confirmed Monday in an email that the Illinois Republican will report to the Rochester Federal Medical Center.

Hastert has a Wednesday afternoon deadline to report.

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois could become the first state in the U.S. with a law giving Muslim-Americans a formal voice in state government.

The Chicago Tribune reported that a bill approved by the Legislature would create a 21-member Illinois Muslim-American Advisory Council. It’s awaiting Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s signature. The governor’s office said he’s reviewing it.

Muslim leaders said it would send a welcoming message to Muslims. The governor and legislative leaders would appoint council members.

NEW YORK – Don’t call it Tribune anymore: The newspaper company has officially changed its name to Tronc.

The company behind the Los Angeles Times and the Chicago Tribune is shedding its name to rebrand as a high-tech journalism company as it tries to avoid being bought by USA Today owner Gannett Co. Tronc stands for Tribune online content, the company says.

The Chicago-based publisher also will get a new stock symbol.

Tronc Inc. began trading on the Nasdaq stock exchange Monday under the ticker symbol “TRNC.”

Official: Group wants to sabotage Lucas Museum

CHICAGO – The head of the Chicago Park District said demands from a group suing to block “Star Wars” filmmaker George Lucas from building his museum on Chicago’s lakefront are “outrageous.”

Friends of the Parks released a memo recently outlining stipulations under which it would settle its lawsuit, including a legally binding promise from Chicago to protect the lakefront from development for the next century.

The memo said the group also wants 5 percent of museum revenues allocated to parks improvements.

Chicago Park District Board President Jesse Ruiz on Sunday accused the group of deliberately trying to sabotage the project.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that Ruiz told the group in a letter that “attempts to demand money from the museum are nothing short of extortion.”

A severe heatwave ushered in the first day of summer Monday in the broiling Southwest, where extreme temperatures were blamed for at least five deaths over the weekend.

In Palm Springs, the thermometer hit 121 degrees in the early afternoon. The temperature in Phoenix climbed past 111 degrees. A cool-off was expected in the coming days. The National Weather Service reported 17 daily heat records were broken in Southern California on Sunday – because of a high-pressure ridge over the Four Corners region of the Southwest.

NYC police officials charged in scandal

NEW YORK –Two high-ranking New York Police Department officers were arrested Monday on charges they took more than $100,000 worth of free flights, prostitutes, expensive meals and other bribes in exchange for providing a “private police force” for local businessmen.

Deputy Chief Michael Harrington, Deputy Inspector James Grant and a third defendant, Brooklyn businessman Jeremy Reichberg, were charged with conspiracy to commit honest services wire fraud – the latest development in a series of overlapping public corruption investigations coordinated by U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara. David Villanueva, an NYPD sergeant assigned to the gun license bureau, was arrested on charges of conspiring to commit bribery.

Transcript: Gunman said he was an Islamic soldier The ASSOCIATED PRESS ORLANDO, Fla. – Orlando gunman Omar Mateen identified himself as an Islamic soldier in calls with authorities during his rampage and demanded to a crisis negotiator that the U.S. “stop bombing Syria and Iraq,” according to transcripts released by the FBI on Monday.

The partial transcripts were of a 911 call made by Mateen and three conversations he had with the police crisis negotiators during the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history, in which 49 people died and dozens were wounded.

Those communications, along with Facebook posts and searches Mateen made around the time of the shootings, add to the public understanding of the final hours of Mateen’s life and to the possible motivations behind the rampage.

The first call came more than a half-hour after shots rang out, when Mateen told a 911 operator, “Praise be to God, and prayers as well as peace be upon the prophet of God,” he told the dispatcher, referring to God in Arabic.

“I let you know, I’m in Orlando and I did the shootings.”

During the 50-second call with a dispatcher, Mateen “made murderous statements in a “chilling, calm and deliberate manner,” Ronald Hopper, FBI assistant special agent in charge in Orlando, said during a news conference.

However, there is no evidence Mateen was directed by a foreign terrorist group, and he was radicalized domestically and on his own, Hopper said.

Mateen’s name and the groups and people to whom he pledged allegiance were initially omitted from the excerpt. But the Justice Department reversed course later Monday, providing a more complete transcript confirming Mateen pledged allegiance

City officials have refused to provide hundreds of 911 calls to The Associated Press and a coalition of news organizations, citing confidentiality under Florida law, and arguing that an ongoing investigation kept the tapes secret. Hopper also said Monday that the tapes would not be released out of respect for the victims.

“Yes, the audio was compelling, but to expose that now would be excruciatingly painful to exploit them in this way,” Hopper said.

Hopper also said: “Part of redacting is to not give credence to individuals who have done terrorist acts in the past.

They are not going to propagate their violent rhetoric.”

The AP and others requested the 911 tapes and related data, a common practice after such major events. The recordings could offer insight into how law enforcement responded.

Also at Monday’s news conference, Orlando Police Chief John Mina said that if any fire from responding officers hit victims at the club, gunman Mateen bears the responsibility. He wouldn’t give further details but said: “Here’s what I will tell you. Those killings are on the suspect, on the suspect alone in my mind.” He stressed that the officers “acted heroically.”

Mina acknowledged that questions have been raised by media outlets and the public about whether Orlando police waited too long after the start of the rampage at 2 a.m. to send in a SWAT team about 5 a.m.

To the Editor: The American flag is a symbol of freedom, power and unity.

It seems to me that the flag was normally flown at half-staff when high-ranking leaders of our country died. That’s the way it should be!

Now every time there is a mass shooting, we fly the flag at half-staff. It seems the last two years, every three months I see the flag at half-staff.

I bet in ISIS, in their training camps, are saying: “Hey, look, we got the

How long can state run with no budget?

Nobody, and I mean nobody, thought that Gov. Bruce Rauner’s administration could ever keep state operations running for a year without an actual state budget.

State and federal courts have ordered about 90 percent of state spending since the General Assembly’s Democrats and the Republican governor deadlocked on a budget last year because they couldn’t come to terms on the governor’s pro-business/anti-union Turnaround Agenda.

Because of those court orders, employees are getting paid and Medicaid payments are being made, among other things.

When Rauner put aside his demands for things such as workers’ comp reform before he’d do a budget deal, he and legislators were able to agree on releasing funds for local governments and federal programs, and they appropriated some money for universities and colleges.

But state government operations have been hammered. If the air conditioning goes out in a state building and it can’t be fixed inhouse, too bad.

Lack of money for postage and printing costs forced the Secretary of State to suspend sending out reminder notices for license plate renewals.

Enormous overdue utility bills have been piling up. The Depart-

Rauner bragged last week to reporters that keeping the state functioning is a result of “an extraordinary performance by the leaders in our team.”

“We’re doing heroic things,” Rauner claimed.

Ever since Rauner asked legislative Democratic leaders for a temporary “stopgap” budget for bureaucratic operations in April, the Democrats have viewed the request as a sign of potential weakness and have so far refused to comply.

Rauner has claimed the Democrats are attempting to force a crisis via a state shutdown. The Democrats counter that Rauner, himself, has been trying to create a crisis to leverage passage of his Turnaround Agenda.

So how is the administration managing to – literally – keep the lights on?

The Rauner administration has a team of people that works on these issues and has developed all sorts of contingency plans. One of the

departments they really have to watch all the time is Corrections.

Some little state board might go under and almost nobody would notice. But if the state can’t feed prisoners, well, that could be really bad.

The administration has been using a special loan fund to help some prison contractors get through this rough patch.

The vendors can sell their debt to a company for most of what they’re owed, which can keep them limping along.

Every now and then, the governor’s office will get calls from mayors of downstate prison towns, who sometimes seem to have been ginned up by the Democrats. A water shutoff or some such thing is threatened unless the towns receive payment on their overdue bills.

The mayors are asked to please be patient while the leaders work on a budget.

If kindness doesn’t work, the mayors are sternly warned that the state won’t be able to operate a prison without water, so prisoners will have to be moved to other facilities. And once they leave, they won’t ever be coming back. Rauner, the mayors are told, believes we have too many people behind bars anyway.

And, besides, once the facility is abandoned, the state would have to comply with much stricter build-

ing and safety rules if it wanted to reopen the prison. That would cost lots of money that the state simply doesn’t have.

And, of course, if the prison permanently goes away, so will all those local jobs and the facilities’ huge economic impacts. So a mayor can shut off the water over a pastdue bill, but that’ll turn out to be the most costly utility shutoff in the history of that town. So far, it’s worked.

As I write this, Mount Sterling is facing this very dilemma. The tiny town of fewer than 2,000 people is owed $300,000 to $400,000 (depending on whom you talk to) for water service to the 2,000 inmates at Western Illinois Correctional Center.

They’re desperate for the money, but they also, obviously, don’t want to lose those jobs.

We could be reaching a turning point.

The Department of Corrections director predicted in an early June newspaper op-ed that prison vendors will eventually have to pull their services, which could, he warned, “cripple the department in a matter of days.”

The administration will have to get even more “heroic” if that happens.

VOLLEYBALL’S FIRST FAMILY Five Perinar siblings drive each other, but make their own marks

kjasnica@shawmedia.com The alarm clock goes off at 4:30 on a Saturday morning. It’s time to wake up a tired and crabby high school athlete.

Many parents know this story.

They load the bags into the car and sometimes drive for hours to make it to a tournament.

Their kids play for half the day and sometimes they have to deal with excitement and heartbreak all within a few hours.

It’s exhausting, And for most parents, this happens each weekend.

It’s different for the Perinar fam-

ily.

Larry and Patricia Perinar sometimes have to go through all of those emotions from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. because they run from one volleyball tournament to the next.

The super-parent duo constantly juggle games because all five of their children decided to play volleyball.

Luck has it that all five are pretty nifty at the sport.

Four of the five Perinars have ended their high school careers at Minooka with stellar careers. Only one remains and is about to enter her junior year. She welcomes the challenge of continuing the success streak.

“This school season at Minooka will be a lot different compared to the others,” Rocky Perinar said. “With all my siblings graduated and me being the only Perinar left, it puts pressure on me to make a great, lasting impact.

Having shoes to fill of my sisters is an honor to have. I look up to all my siblings and getting this chance is one of a lifetime.”

This summer, Rocky took another step to follow in her siblings’ footsteps.

After she committed to playing at University of Tennessee, the expectation became solidified. The Perinar family went five for five with college volleyball players, a rare feat, indeed.

THE PERINAR ROSTER

Now let’s introduce the roster: huge-hearted Stacey, adventurous Brenna, outgoing Mitch, humble Ginger and goofy Rocky.

With five volleyball kids, it must mean one of the parents was a rockstar college player.

Not the case here.

The family didn’t get the volleyball genes from their parents, but they did get their athleticism from Larry (football) and Patricia (poms).

The parents have caught onto the sport, however, and are more

Continued from page 18 well-versed than the average volleyball family. Instead of playing bags during a cookout, the kids play volleyball as the parents watch and smile.

Volleyball isn’t a sport for the Perinar family. It’s a vital part of their lives.

And that part all started because of their “heart.”

When Stacey was in fourth grade, her best friend decided to go to a camp. Since she was ultra competitive even at a young age, she felt that she needed to go, too.

“When I found out my best friend signed up for volleyball camp at the Channahon Park District, I was super jealous and begged my mom to sign me up, too,” Stacey said. “After a four-day camp, there was no doubt that I had fallen in love with

the game.”

All the Perinar siblings looked up to Stacey. When she was playing volleyball, her three sisters watched and wanted to be just like her. They immediately followed in her footsteps, and Mitch followed when he was 13.

All four of her siblings admit volleyball became a family sport only because Stacey started playing. Her passion was there from the get-go, but it grew with the club and eventually changed everyone’s life.

“I never thought that UNO would bring me to make friends that I will have for a life time,” Stacey said.

“Club volleyball changed my life and I wouldn’t have done it any other way. Even though it was a big commitment, it led me from being a 12-year-old girl who loved the game of volleyball to a girl who got to fulfill her dream of playing D-I volleyball and going to college to complete my degree on a full-ride scholarship.”

Stacey just concluded her senior year at Eastern Michigan University and compiled 1,126 kills, 949 digs, 110 blocks, 83 aces and 2,325 serve receive passes with only 118 errors.

It took years of hard work to get to that level. It also took role models.

When she played on UNO 16 and 18 Elite, her coach was Amy Larson, a Joliet Catholic graduate who quickly became a mentor, friend and person the young athlete looked up to.

In Perinar’s 16s year, Larson was diagnosed with breast cancer, and in her 18s, it came back. It broke Stacey’s heart, but having such a strong role model like Larson taught Stacey how to be a great role model for her siblings.

Stacey attributes much of her leadership skills to her parents, but she might have learned a lesson from Larson. Even though she might not have the answers to everything her siblings look to her for, she gives it her best.

“When you are oldest, your siblings

look up to you and you’re supposed to set an example,” Stacey said. “Being the first one to go to college for volleyball and to play club helped show them what it takes to accomplish those things. I gave them tips and would play with and help them in the backyard and they would all come support me at my games.

“When it comes to life experiences, I definitely cleared a path for most categories and both myself and my siblings have learned lessons from them. Although we didn’t understand it all the time, our parents have always had our best interest in mind even if it meant getting in trouble or saying no to things we wanted to do. I hope I was a good example for them and they learned a lot from me. I would do anything for my siblings and I can’t wait to watch them grow as people and volleyball players.

I’m their biggest fan and can’t wait to see where life takes them.”

Brenna and Mitch have shared a lot going through life. Volleyball was just another thing the twins shared.

Brenna concluded her superb career at Lincoln Land Community and will shortly begin her reign at University of Saint Francis. Fifteen minutes down the road, Mitch recently finished an extremely successful season at Lewis.

There are many same-sex twins that play volleyball, but opposite-sex twins playing is another Perinar rarity.

“I find it kind of cool that Mitch and I play the same sport because it is just another bond we have,” Brenna said. “We go to each other’s games a lot to support each other and next year I will be right down the street from him so we can keep watching each other play for a few more years.”

Both also share something huge.

They were their respective conference’s Freshman Player of the Year.

In her two years, Brenna totaled 660 kills, 130 assists, 681 digs, 154 blocks and 81 aces. She was a twotime All-Mid-West Athletic Conference and All-Region player on top of her Freshman Player of the Year honors.

The choice to move away for college wasn’t random for Brenna. She was able to make a name for herself at college without having her siblings even mentioned.

“Sometimes with ‘volleyball families,’ there is a higher expectation for all players to do well,” Brenna admitted. “Since I am from a family where all my siblings play the same sport, we all get compared a lot to each other. Another reason I went to Lincoln Land was because no one knew me, so I just got to play and not get compared to my siblings as much.

“In the end of my freshman year, I ended up getting freshman of the year, all-conference and all-region, and the end of my sophomore year I got all-conference and all-region again. Also this past season, as a sophomore, I was able to be a part of the best season of volleyball in Lincoln Land’s history, achieving second in the nation and finishing 40-6.”

After proving herself away from home, Brenna decided to come back to attend St. Francis and pursue her college degree in media arts and broadcasting.

Not only did she decide on USF for the strong academic department, the university also had the benefit of being closer to her family and her twin.

After two outstanding seasons at Lincoln Land Community College, Brenna Perinar will bring her game to University of St. Francis.

Mitch Perinar is counted on to be a mainstay on Lewis’ strong team next season. He and twin Brenna both will be playing close to home as Brenna has enrolled at St. Francis.

MITCH AT LEWIS

The entire family has been a huge support system for each sibling, but no one can break that twin bond. In the upcoming years, the twins will watch each other excel.

Mitch will watch Brenna as she helps St. Francis elevate its program and Brenna will watch Mitch do the same.

Mitch was able to watch Lewis at the highest level its been in recent years. In 2015, Lewis was the national runnerup, and now, he is part of the core that hopefully will bring the Flyers back to that

level.

“It meant a lot to be a part of that runner-up team,” Mitch said. “Although I was a redshirt at the time, practicing with those guys and watching how they carried themselves helped mold me into the player I am today. With all of them graduating, my class has tried to become the backbone of the team to try to get us to another NCAA tournament.”

The main part of the backbone is Mitch’s team-leading 290 kills and a .325 hitting percentage. He is the Flyers’ huge offensive threat going into next season.

Each of the Perinar sisters might feel the competition among themselves to be the best, or to live up to their older siblings’ successes. They are constantly compared to each other and want to prove themselves.

Mitch on the other hand is the only male player. Since the game is so different, he really has no need to worry.

Mitch has been named the Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Freshman Player of the Year and earned AVCA honorable-mention accolades – a feat that only the accomplished Geoff Powell made as a freshman in recent years for the Flyers.

“I was really happy to receive freshman of the year,” Mitch said. “It was something I was striving for before the season started. The last person to get it from Lewis, Geoff Powell, ended up having a stellar career and following in his footsteps would be awesome.”

Simply put, the 6-foot-6 Mitch has lived up to the family name despite the men’s game being so different. He also has represented Team USA on the Men’s Junior National Team and still has a bright future. To keep improving his own game, Mitch plans to do the same thing: worry about his game only.

He does, however, want to follow in one of Stacey’s footsteps.

“The only accolade I would like to get is one that Stacey got this year, which is 1,000 kills. If I could match her in that, I would be (pumped),” Mitch said.

middle isn’t even her normal position. She’s better at playing outside.

She will be a marked player in the conference next season.

Perhaps more than any of her siblings, Rocky has been able to grow up with the sport and admire the game. She’s watched each of the four predecessors play at a high level and has learned from them.

That may be why she’s so versatile, and why so many colleges were pursuing her at such a young age.

Instead of focusing on what she can do, however, she wants to make note of what others have done for her. She said she owes it all to two people.

“We are pretty much known as the ‘volleyball family’ because all the kids play it,” Rocky said. “I think it is pretty great that we have all earned the opportunity to play college volleyball. It is the opportunity of a lifetime, to be a part of the competitiveness and great atmosphere that comes with it. But without both my parents’ love and support throughout all the years of playing, I don’t know where we would all be right now.

“Even the times when I didn’t want to go to a private session or practice, they always pushed me to be my best, and it has always made me want to become better. Through all the obstacles we have faced as individuals, our parents have always been there for us, and I would love to thank them for that.”

That’ll be an award that Ginger will look to reach at Southern Illinois in the upcoming years.

The family’s third pin hitter just left a spectacular season at Minooka where she was named the Southwest Prairie Player of the Year and helped lead the team of underclassmen to a regional title.

Ginger is a two-time Herald-News All-Area selection and has dominated for the Indians.

“I wouldn’t trade the past four years I have spent playing at Minooka for any other school,” Ginger said. “The conference we play in is very competitive and full of a lot of talented players. Receiving the MVP award this year is something I am extremely proud of considering the amazing players I was up against and something I did not expect at all.

“I give credit to the coaches I have had throughout my high school career for always believing in me even when I doubted my abilities.”

Ginger might have sacrificed the most among her siblings thus far because she has followed in their footsteps. From them, she learned that she needs to do strength training and conditioning to stay at the top level. She had to give up weekends to reach the next level.

This year, she had to take all of that a step further. She had to plan every meal.

“It was an all-protein diet, basically consisting of meats, fish, nuts, fruits, veggies and protein shakes and bars,” Ginger said. “No fried food, white bread or dairy was really hard, especially because who doesn’t like fries and ice cream? Although I did cheat a couple times, the diet overall really did work and I felt a lot better and could see myself perform at a higher level. It is something I am going to try to continue to do when I go to college.”

If she can continue where she left off at high school – 396 kills, 270 digs, 97 blocks, 22 aces – Ginger will follow in her siblings’ footsteps and compete at that higher level.

Ginger admits last season was amazing because she not only got to accomplish so much with her best friends who ended their volleyball careers, but she also got to compete at a high level with her younger sister Rocky as well.

The Associated Press BOSTON – Jose Abreu doubled home two runs off Boston closer Craig Kimbrel with two outs in the top of the 10th inning after the White Sox escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the ninth, lifting the Sox to a 3-1 win over the Red Sox on Monday night.

The Sox snapped a three-game losing streak and won for just the eighth time in 26 games. Boston has lost five of eight.

Zach Duke (2-0) wriggled out of the ninth to get the win. David Robertson worked the 10th for his 17th save.

Red Sox knuckleballer Steven Wright pitched nine innings, giving up only an unearned run and five hits. He struck out six and walked three while lowering his AL-best ERA to 2.01.

Abreu doubled to right-center off Kimbrel (0-3) after Avisail Garcia walked and J.B. Shuck singled.

Gonzalez entered 6-1 with a 3.27 ERA against the Red Sox and was 4-0 against them in five starts at Fenway Park.

He mostly mixed a sharp-breaking slider with a mid-90s (mph) fastball, keeping Boston off stride and inducing a number of weak swings. The highest-scoring team in the majors was getting shut out until Vazquez’s broken-bat single dropped into center, tying it at 1.

Gonzalez was a contrast to Wright, who had his usual array of knucklers moving, but mixed in occasional curveballs – one at 64 mph – and fastballs in the mid-to-upper 80s (mph).

Coming off a weekend when they were swept in three games at Cleveland and scored just six total runs, the White Sox grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second.

Brett Lawrie had a one-out double, advanced on a flyout and scored on Vazquez’s passed ball.

Cardinals stop 5-game slide with victory over Cubs

The Associated Press CHICAGO – Brandon Moss and Jhonny Peralta homered against John Lackey, and the St. Louis Cardinals stopped a five-game slide by holding off the Cubs for a 3-2 victory on Monday night.

Aledmys Diaz added an RBI single and Jaime Garcia (5-6) pitched into the seventh inning as the Cardinals got back on track following their first winless homestand of at least two series since 1983. It was their first trip to Wrigley Field since they were eliminated by the Cubs in the NL Division Series last year.

Lackey settled down after a slow start, but Garcia and two relievers held the major league-leading Cubs in check. Lackey (7-3) allowed three runs and seven hits in six innings in his first loss in three appearances this year against his former team.

MORRIS – Brian Tedeschi won the pole position for last Friday night’s 30lap Late Model feature at Grundy County Speedway, but he didn’t hold the lead spot for long.

In fact, it wasn’t until the final lap that he was able to overcome Nathan Bertino – who led the entire race in between – and come away with the win.

Tedeschi finished ahead of second-place Eddie Hoffman by .209 seconds and beat third-place finisher Larry Schuler by .417 seconds. It was a tight group up front as fourth-place Billy Knippenberg Jr. (.737) and fifth-place Tony Scalpelli Jr. (.981) also were within a second of the race winner.

James Gregait, John Nutley, Brandon Clubb, Dean Patterson and Jim Weber rounded out the top 10 in the Late Model division.

In the Mid-American division, Ron Vandermeir Jr. earned the victory in the 25-lap feature after wrestling the lead away from Matt Clement on Lap 17. Clemens had led from Lap 6, when he took the lead from pole-sitter Kenny Benson. Cody Clubb finished third, while Kevin Murphy was fourth and Jake Bradley took fifth. Mary McKin-

ney, Benson, Jeremy Clubb, Aaron Shelton and Jim Kachel completed the top-10 finishers.

In the 25-lap Street Stock feature race, John Senerchia finished just ahead of Eddie Ligue and Craig Matteson to take the checkered. Ligue finished .600 behind Senerchai with Matteson a scant .025 behind Ligue for third. Following Matteson to the finish line and completing the top 10 were Tim Stewart, Christy Penrod, Randy Weese, Spencer Leake, Paul Polarek, Chris Mihalski and Cheryl Hryn.

In the 4-Cylinder main event, there wasn’t nearly as much drama, as Michael Tobuch won the 15-lap race by 1.420 seconds over Dan Schmeissing. Scott Gagan, Matt Chester, Matt Wysocki, Miles Wilbanks, Thomas Kaminski, Kristi Odom, Terry Candella and Nick Esposito rounded out the top 10.

Racing continues Friday night at Grundy County Speedway, located at the Grundy County Fairgrounds on Route 47 just north of Morris. This marks the mid-season championship program, with each race earning double points. Pits open at 4 p.m., with the grandstand opening at 5:30. Qualifying begins at 6:30, and the first race at 8.

HELPING PEDIATRIC HOSPICE BLOOM Plainfield couple began JACH garden walk in honor of their grandson

JOLIET – The work done recently by about 40 firefighters – along with some family members – was completed just in time.

With wheelbarrows, shovels and other garden tools, the team spread mulch at the gardens at Joliet Area Community Hospice over a two-day period, said Dave Eichholzer, firefighter and hospice volunteer.

It was all done for the 10th annual Timmy’s Garden Walk, scheduled for June 25.

The self-guided walk was founded and is still co-coordinated by John and Betsy Sullivan of Plainfield.

Their grandson, Timmy Davis, had been in hospice’s pediatric program from age 10 months until he died in 2012.

As gardeners, the Sullivans had attended several successful garden walks that benefited other organizations. So they approached JACH with the idea of hosting a garden walk to help other families and raise awareness for the pediatric program.

“We were so grateful for everything they did for [Timmy],” Betsy said. “We just wanted to give back.”

Caring for the youngest patients

Laurie Mungovan, pediatric nurse coordinator, said one misconception about JACH’s pediatric program is that it’s mostly for cancer patients.

That’s actually a small percentage of the patients it serves, she said.

Twelve to 15 children are typically in the program, Mungovan said, all with a terminal diagnosis and short-term life expectancy.

“Pediatric” is defined as up to age 21. Clients may stay beyond that age for continuity of care, Mungovan said. It also includes older clients with the developmental age of young children.

In addition to Mungovan and a second pediatric nurse, Dedria Galik, the pediatric program includes a social worker and a chaplain, Mungovan said.

“We treat the whole child as well as the family,” she said. “We realize when a child is sick in the home, it affects everyone – parents, siblings and grandparents.”

sometimes not, Mungovan said. Other children appear healthy, but regress in early childhood and become totally dependent and minimally responsive.

“A lot of them have chronic medical needs,” she said. “A lot of them aren’t able to move on their own, dress themselves or feed themselves.”

Mungovan, who’s worked for JACH for eight-and-a-half years, said the hospice began a dedicated pediatric program about a decade ago. Before that, JACH accepted occasional pediatric cases.

“We go into hospitals sometimes and the neonatal nurses will say, ‘We had no idea kids could go in hospice,’” Mungovan said.

Timmy’s Garden Walk raises about $8,000 to $10,000 annually, Mungovan said. The JACH website states program funding comes from private pay, insurance, donations and grants – including a grant from the local Make Your Mark Foundation.

No child is turned away due to a family’s inability to pay, Mungovan said, so the proceeds from the garden walk are significant.

“It’s truly a philanthropic thing,” Mungovan said of the pediatric program. “There’s just a few pediatric programs in the state of Illinois, so families really need these services.”

More than one way to give back

Since the JACH gardens are part of

Timmy’s Garden Walk, that philanthropy is larger than people realize, circling back to the mulch in those gardens.

Eichholzer said the fire department took on the mulch project about seven years ago when another volunteer asked him whether he “could bring some big strong firemen” to help.

So Eichholzer said he asked half a dozen guys to come out to spread “two massive piles of mulch.”

“It took us a week to finish,” Eichholzer said.

This year, a few people donated Bobcat tractors to speed the distribution of the mulch out of the three semitrailers and into the gardens, Eichholzer said. But it’s still a great deal of work.

“I really appreciate our guys stepping up to the plate,” Eichholzer aid.

“A lot of sweat poured out those last few days.”

Why do the firefighters get involved? Two reasons. One, Eichholzer said, firefighters are community helpers and using their abilities for hospice exemplifies that.

And second, it’s a way of showing appreciation for JACH’s services.

“A lot of us have been touched by the care given to family members,” Eichholzer said. “It’s a way to pay that back.”

28 Electronic skin patch may have many uses Dear Dr. K: I’m 54, and have had Type 1 “childhood” diabetes since I was 7. A friend with diabetes heard about a new skin patch that automatically keeps a person’s blood sugar in control – no finger-sticks to check blood sugar, no needles for getting insulin. Can that possibly be true?

Dear Reader: It’s not true yet, but I think it’s coming. I’m glad you asked the question, because what I’ll call “electronic skin patches” are starting to affect both medical care and research in many areas, not just diabetes.

I believe you heard about a study in mice that used an electronic patch. Before I discuss the study, a few basics about diabetes. (You know this, but some readers won’t.) Normally, when we eat a meal, sugar is absorbed into the blood. That sugar is a key source of energy needed by the cells of our body. But for the cells to be able to use the sugar to generate energy, the sugar has to be able to get inside the cell.

That’s where insulin comes in. Insulin is a natural chemical made by an organ in our belly, the pancreas. Insulin moves sugar from the blood into cells. The problem in Type 1 diabetes, like you have, is the pancreas stops making insulin.

That’s why you need to check the level of sugar in your blood frequently, and give yourself a shot of insulin when that sugar level is too high.

The patch you heard about does all of this automatically. It is very thin and sticks to the skin. The underside of the patch contains thousands of tiny needles – so tiny you can’t feel them. The tips of the needles rest in the fluid between the cells just beneath the skin and sense the

When used for 12 hours in mice, this patch worked like a charm: It accurately sensed sugar levels, released insulin when it was needed, and never allowed blood sugar to go either too high or too low. Would it have worked as well day in and day out? And would it work in humans? That remains to be seen. But it is an encouraging first step.

Scientists have created electronic skin patches that monitor other bodily functions. They accurately can measure electrical signals in the brain, heart and muscle. Many scientists are testing such patches to see if they might serve as early warning systems of things going wrong in the body. Might such patches detect potentially dangerous heart rhythms in people with heart disease? Or early spasms of breathing tubes in the lungs in people with asthma? By such early detection, early treatment might prevent serious illness.

My crystal ball says electronic skin patches are going to be used to monitor and treat disease. They also are going to be used in research, sending information continually and wirelessly through our smartphones to study computers for analysis. I find it exciting.

Dear Abby: My son chose his cousin, “Tim,” as best man for his wedding. Tim gave a speech about how my son was like a little brother to him and mentioned some of the pranks he would play on my son. It was extremely funny, but the reality is the pranks were quite cruel.

A bridge player’s ace in the hole is knowing when to break the “rules” of the game, like “second hand low,” “third hand high” and “cover an honor with an honor.”

In today’s deal, South opens one no-trump, and North raises to game, thinking it will be a breeze. Well, after West leads the spade king, how should the declarer play and defense proceed?

South starts with seven top tricks: one spade, three hearts, two diamonds and one club. A winning finesse in either minor will see the contract home with at least one overtrick.

In isolation, the correct technique is first to cash the diamond ace and king, hoping to drop the queen; then, if she has not appeared, to take the club finesse.

Here, as you can see, this results in down two, the defenders taking four spades, one diamond and one club.

However, declarer can set a small trap for East. At trick three (or two), he should play a heart to the board, then lead the diamond jack. If East thinks only about covering the last of touching honors, he will play his queen, and the contract will make.

How does East know what to do?

By checking the high-card points as soon as the dummy appears. With 14 on the board, five in his hand and five (the spade king-queen) in partner’s hand, that leaves only 16 points missing. These must be in declarer’s hand, given that all four jacks are in the dummy. So there is no point in covering the jack of diamonds.
