Sanitary Ship Canal – Lockport Nineteenth-century public health officials, physicians, and engineers understood the need to control the water supply and wastewater disposal in Chicago. It was believed that proper sanitation and a better water supply would protect city residents from epidemic outbreaks such as cholera, typhoid and polio.

In 1889, the State of Illinois authorized the establishment of the Sanitary District of Chicago to deal with the sewage issue in the city as the Deep Cut project and other ideas failed to keep the discharge of waste from entering Lake Michigan.

As the drinking water became more unpalatable and Chicago’s population increased to over 1.5 million, a decision was made to permanently divert and dilute the feculence by streaming it away in a larger and deeper canal.

Isham Randolph, a civil engineer, served as the Chief Engineer for the digging of the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal and helped oversee the extension of the canal through Lockport.

Construction of the eastern section of the Sanitary Ship Canal began in 1892 and took eight years to complete the portion between Chicago and Lockport. The channel in this 28-mile section had a navigable depth of more the 20 feet and had a width that varied between 110 and 201 feet.

The construction techniques used to dig through the layers of soil in this location included the use of steam shovels and dynamite, in contrast to the building of the I&M Canal in the 1840s where virtually all of the digging was done by hand using a variety of domestic- and foreign-born laborers.

On May 8, 1899, the secretary of war, R. A. Alger, issued the permit, which authorized the Sanitary District to open the Main Channel of the Sanitary Ship Canal. The Sanitary District quietly, and with no ceremony, turned water into the Main Channel of the canal on Jan. 2, 1900.

A more formal opening took place two weeks later on Jan. 17 when the Lockport Dam was opened at the southern end of the canal.

Old Canal Days offers a walk into the past and fun in the present

bokon@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – On one side of the street was the Screamer, a carnival ride that circles people in the air at high speeds, and on the other side was a display of Model T Fords.

Old Canal Days as usual combined a summer festival with a walk back in time.

The annual Lockport event, which ran Thursday through Sunday, celebrates the canal town’s history while providing locals and visitors with the big community bash of the summer.

“This is my third year. I keep coming back,” Lockport resident Jason Lautwein said Saturday alongside his family while looking at the display of cars put on by the Model T Ford Club’s Midwest Chapter.

“I’ll be back [Sunday] with my older kids,” Lautwein said. “If you can take your family to something and have them learn some things without realizing it, you’re doing good.”

Next to the Model T display, Bill Kane walked through the Pacific Tall Ships exhibit with two of his young children and pointed out the large models of the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria.

“Those are the three ships that Columbus took to find America,” Kane told his kids.

Pacific Tall Ships Co. is owned by Denis Egan, who owns Egan Marine Corp. in Lemont.

The exhibit included boats, both modern and historic, reflecting the canal heritage of Lockport, which lies along both the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal and the historic Illinois & Michigan Canal.

Old Canal Days is not all educational. There was a beer garden with music and a wine tent.

The carnival and a craft show ran throughout the event. Kidz Jam offered a stage for young performers.

Duck Races on Saturday afternoon offered some wacky fun.

Friday and Saturday were band nights. Sunday featured a bean bag tournament and craft beer tasting.

The list of recreational events and activities each day was a long one.

So was the list of activities that told a story of Lockport and Illinois history.

smith Steve Heils of Joliet was engraving horseshoes and demonstrating the craft.

Heils, 54, picked up the hobby when he was in the seventh grade, when a Boy Scout visit to the Will County Historical Society introduced him to blacksmith work.

The Historical Society manages Heritage Village, which includes an old schoolhouse from Homer Township that was built in 1857 and a farmhouse from Crest Hill built in 1865.

The buildings are not open daily, but they were open for Old Canal Days.

Heritage Village also featured a tepee during Old Canal Days as the

Sheriff’s deputy wins national rifle competition

Will County Sheriff’s Deputy Kim Heath won the National Patrol Rifle Competition earlier this month in Detroit – beating out more than 130 law enforcement officers from across the country.

“The department is very fortunate to have a nationally ranked firearms instructor on staff,” Deputy Chief Tom Budde said.

Heath had no experience with firearms before becoming a sheriff’s deputy 12 years ago because it “seemed like an exciting job.”

The national competition began 17 years ago and Heath has participated for the last five years.

Contestants are evaluated on marksmanship and tactics through five courses that include moving targets, multiple adversaries, target identification, use-of-force decisions and shooting from various positions. Targets range from close quarters to 200 yards away.

“I wasn’t able to practice before I went this year, so instead of trying to

think about winning I just wanted to make every round hit, get the points, take the extra half-second to get stable,” Heath said.

Heath said the competition helps police officers practice the mental discipline needed to stay calm when adrenaline kicks in.

“I relaxed. I shot a little slower,” she said. “I focused on the process, not the product.”

Heath is not only the first Will County deputy to ever win the competition, but is also the first woman to do so.

“There are only three women who participate regularly and I don’t understand why more women officers don’t do it,” she said. “It’s very empowering.

There’s a lot of self-satisfaction.”

Heath said her competitors have never discriminated against her, but she’d like to see more women get over “that unspoken limitation” and participate.

And she’s looking forward to defending her award next year.

“Well at first, I thought, ‘No pressure,’ because I’ve won now, but then I started thinking, ‘What if everybody else just had a bad day?’ ” Heath joked.

Joliet apartments designed for changed market, developer says

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Developer Ed Mattox had planned 10 years ago to build an even bigger apartment development near the same site where he wants to build Tallgrass Estates.

Tallgrass Estates, which would consist of 156 apartments that Mattox describes as being more like rental homes, is planned for a site at McDonough Street and Interstate 55’s Southeast Frontage Road.

Mattox had planned to build more than 300 apartments across the street during the housing boom, he said. But there was no rental market then, he said, because mortgages were easy to get. Instead, he built Timber Oaks, the

town house development that is there today.

“The market conditions are really different today than they were 10 years ago when we built there,” Mattox told the Joliet Plan Commission last week.

He said the buildings at Tallgrass Estates will be very similar to those at Timber Oaks, but they will be rented, not sold.

“These are homes for rent, not really apartments,” Mattox said. “There are no common corridors. There are no common laundry facilities.”

Monthly rent will be just under $1,400.

“This is a high-end luxury rental,” he said. “Our interest is to build this in Joliet, because there is nothing like it here.”

Mattox said there is a market for high-end rentals. They are “extremely successful” elsewhere, he told the commission.

The commission approved the project, which includes a density variance to allow 7.8 units an acre. The city’s density cap is six units per acre in R-4 zoning. Mattox said Timber Oaks, which has more than 200 units, has about the same density.

The project next goes to the Joliet City Council for consideration.

It also includes plans for a future clubhouse and swimming pool. The project includes garage parking that would be available for half of the units.

All but three units would be two-bedroom. The two-bedroom units would be 1,100 square feet.

The project did face some questions from Commissioner Fredrick Moore regarding the density.

James Jenkins, a resident in Timber Oaks, spoke against the project.

“I don’t want to see apartments coming in,” Jenkins said. “Rent for $1,400 is absolutely ridiculous. You could buy a house for half that.”

Mattox, who owns Kipling Real Estate Management in Shorewood, said people are renting, not buying. If the market changes, the apartments will be built in such a way that they could easily be converted into condominiums, he said. If the project is approved, Mattox said he hopes to have the first apartments available for rent before the end of the year. The entire project will take two years, he said.

JJC makes administrative changes for the year

The JJC Board of Trustees appointed at its meeting last week a new dean of arts and sciences and an interim executive director for human resources.

Sonya Williams will replace Bette Conkin as the dean of arts and sciences, JJC Spokeswoman Kelly Rohder said in an email.

Barth, of Congerville, takes the show across the country, showing audiences what an old-fashioned medicine show was like. His show included a ventriloquist act with an alphabet routine, which Barth said was written in 1901.

“Along with the magic and ventriloquism, they would sell something in between each trick,” Barth said.

Barth displayed one elixir, which, he said, promised to cure many ailments, contained an assortment of ingredients, and most notably was 56 percent alcohol with a prescribed dosage of 4 teaspoons a day.

“If you take 4 teaspoons a day of that stuff,” Barth said to his audience, “you’re going to feel better. I don’t care what your ailment is.”

We all sat looking wide-eyed as Dan had a conversation we couldn’t hear.

Ali didn’t look like he was cooperating and neither did the two very large, muscular men sitting with him.

They all were shaking their heads in disagreement and didn’t look very pleased.

Dan came back somewhat disgruntled and said Ali wouldn’t sign the bottle because he is Muslim.

I was surprised Dan let it go. I thought, and hoped, the incident was over.

Driving along Interstate 80 just east of Houbolt Road recently, an electronic billboard caught my eye. There were just three pictures – a boxing glove, a butterfly and a bee. It took me a few seconds to realize it was a sign for Muhammad Ali (float like a butterfly, sting like a bee). It sent shivers up my arms and down my spine.

It made me want to share my encounter with the boxing great back in 1987.

It was the summer after Mark and I got married. My baby brother, Dan, and his wife, Jessica, were visiting from Wisconsin.

You have to understand a bit about my youngest brother. White blonde hair, light blue eyes that glisten like glass and short in stature, he had always been somewhat of a scrapper.

All through school and as a young man he was in more fights than I’d ever want to know about, and many of them were not pretty.

The four of us went to Diana’s Restaurant in Chicago’s Greektown.

Jessica is half Greek and half Italian, so it was the logical place to go.

While we were having dinner, Muhammad Ali and an entourage of guests came in and sat down just a few tables from us.

Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, where Ryan received his cancer treatments. The family also has given Bernie Scholarships (“Bernie” was Ryan’s nickname, Rick said) to Morris Community High School students who have shown dedication and character on and off the field.

In fact, Rick said, Ryan never asked for much, ever.

“He had a sense of calmness about him,” said Marcy Bernickus, Ryan’s mother. “He was very insightful, very kind. He never gave up; he never complained. He just kept going and knew what he had to do.”

Since childhood, Ryan loved adventure and the outdoors, Marcy said, especially fishing and baseball. Through the years, Ryan played for a number of youth baseball teams.

During his illness, Ryan watched the Cubs and the Blackhawks on television and fished on occasion with friends, Rick said. He also attended three Cubs games last year.

“At one of them, Ryan threw out the first pitch on Wrigley Field against the Atlanta Braves,” Rick said.

At another game, Ryan met former Cubs pitcher Jon Lester, who was diagnosed with a rare blood cancer early in his career. In a 2014 Herald-News story, Ryan said he chose to appreciate the good days.

That’s how Brian DeCook of Indiana described Ryan Bernickus of Morris, who was 23 when he died April 13.

For two summers, Brian was a coach for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes – an elite, highly competitive team that played in tournaments every weekend in June, July and part of August, Brian said. Ryan played on that team when he was 16 and 17.

Brian said Ryan was – even then – quiet but strong.

“He was one of those athletes that if you told him to jump over the brick wall, he’d go and give it a shot,” Brian said. “If you asked him to play a position he didn’t usually play, he’d pick up his glove and go do it with no complaining and no excuses. You knew you were going to get his best every time.”

While most of the boys on the team had dreams of college baseball, Ryan had dreams of working in pharmacology. Education, not baseball, was Ryan’s priority and that meant laying

down the sport, Brian said.

“I think he was ahead of the curve,” Brian said. “He knew where he was going and what he wanted to do. Baseball was secondary to that, although he enjoyed playing at a high level and could have played on a number of levels in college.”

While studying for final exams in March 2014 as a third-year student at the University of Iowa, Ryan began having back pain, said his father, Rick Bernick- Ryan us. Ryan completed the Bernickus semester, came home and learned he had Ewings sarcoma – a primary bone cancer that mainly affects children and young adults.

Ryan had just been accepted to the University of Chicago College of Pharmacy.

“He said, ‘I’m going to beat this.

I’m going back to pharmacy school,’ ” Rick said. “He never made it back to school.”

Not once, Rick said, did Ryan complain about his circumstances. But even as a child, Ryan was humble and polite, the type of kid who jumped up

Yelchin, an only child, was born in Russia. His parents were professional figure skaters who moved the family to the United States when Yelchin was a baby. He briefly flirted with skating lessons, too, before discovering that he wasn’t very skilled on the ice. That led him to acting class.

LOS ANGELES – Anton Yelchin, a rising actor best known for playing Chekov in the new “Star Trek” films, was killed by his own car as it rolled down his driveway early Sunday, police and his publicist said.

The car pinned Yelchin, 27, against a brick mailbox pillar and a security fence at his home in Los Angeles, Officer Jenny Hosier said. He had gotten out of the vehicle momentarily, but police did not say why he was behind it when it started rolling.

Yelchin was on his way to meet friends for a rehearsal, Hosier said.

When he didn’t show up, the group came to his home and found him dead.

The freak accident tragically cuts short the promising career of an actor whom audiences were still getting to know and who had great artistic ambition. “Star Trek Beyond,” the third film in the rebooted series, comes out in July.

Director J.J. Abrams, who cast Yelchin in the franchise, wrote in a statement that he was “brilliant ... kind ... funny as hell, and supremely talented.”

His death was felt throughout the industry.

“He was a ferocious movie buff who put us all to shame,” said Gabe Klinger, who directed Yelchin in the upcoming film “Porto,” likely to be released this

He drew on his Russian roots for his role as the heavily accented navigator Chekov in the “Star Trek” films, his most high-profile to date.

“What’s great about him is he can do anything. He’s a chameleon. He can do bigger movies or smaller, more intimate ones,” ‘’Like Crazy” director Drake Doremus told the AP in 2011.

“There are a lot of people who can’t, who can only do one or the other. ...

That’s what blows my mind.”

Yelchin seemed to fit in anywhere in Hollywood.

He could do big sci-fi franchises and vocal work in “The Smurfs,” while also appearing in more eccentric and artier fare, like Jim Jarmusch’s vampire film “Only Lovers Left Alive” and Jeremy Saulnier’s horror thriller “Green Room,” a cult favorite that came out earlier this year.

Yelchin’s publicist, Jennifer Allen, confirmed his death and said his family requests privacy.

Airbnb regulation debate rages statewide

CHICAGO – Chicago and Airbnb have battled for months over the proposed tightening of short-term rental rules in the nation’s third largest city, but the debate has also quietly rippled out into some of the smaller communities across Illinois.

From creatively interpreting existing laws to near-bans on the burgeoning industry, the cities are finding their own ways to either generate new revenues or simply quell complaints about rowdy out-of-towners.

When a noisy Super Bowl house party at a rental in the tranquil Chicago suburb of Lincolnwood prompted neighborhood complaints last year, officials rewrote their laws to discourage rentals shorter than 30 days. Officials said they prioritized maintaining the character of the community of roughly 12,500 people over the potential tourist revenue short-term rentals might bring.

“I doubt people are coming in just to vacation in Lincolnwood, though I’d love it if that happened,” Village Manager Tim Wiberg said.

Lincolnwood homeowners can now rent out for less than 30 days only once per calendar year, which Wiberg said avoids revolving door visitors while ac-

Meanwhile, a Springfield alderman has raised quality-of-life issues with summertime sublets around the capital city’s lake. Evanston beefed up rules on rentals of less than 30 days. And Wilmette has sought public input on shortterm rentals.

The online listing companies have focused their energy on fighting restrictions in Chicago, where the stakes are much higher and where city officials estimate there are roughly 6,000 rental units through sites like HomeAway and Airbnb.

Chicago’s push to regulate short-term rentals follows efforts in major cities including San Francisco. Chicago aldermen who want restrictions have said short-term rentals have created issues in some of the city’s livelier neighborhoods such as Lincoln Park, where partying visitors have created defacto hotels.

They described it as a threat to neighborhood identity and the long-term rental market, and hotel associations are concerned about dwindling revenues.

Trump says U.S. should mull profiling Muslims

WASHINGTON – Donald Trump suggested Sunday that the United States should “seriously” consider profiling Muslims inside the country as a terrorism-fighting tool, the latest example of the Republican presidential nominee-in-waiting increasingly backing positions that could single out a group based on their religion.

“We really have to look at profiling,” Trump said in an interview broadcast Sunday on CBS’s “Face the Nation.” ‘’It’s not the worst thing to do.”

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee added that he “hate(s) the concept of profiling, but we have to use common sense” over “political correctness.”

Trump’s proposal runs counter to Justice Department policy, which explicitly prohibits profiling on the basis of race, religion, ethnicity and national origin. That profiling ban applies not only to federal agents but also to local law enforcement officers who participate in federal task forces.

Trump’s increasing embrace of policies that could isolate Muslims in America is extraordinary for a candidate assured of his party’s presidential nomination. The proposals have been roundly dismissed and criticized by many Republican leaders, including House Speaker Paul Ryan.

Civil libertarians, Muslims and others also have strongly disagreed, arguing that profiling is unconstitutional and often constitutes unlawful discrimination based on race, religion and other factors.

Law enforcement should remain allied with groups that might have helpful information, Attorney General Loretta Lynch said in an interview that aired Sunday.

Trump’s statements are consistent with his other, long-expressed views on how to stop terrorism in the United States, including a temporary ban on foreign Muslims from entering the country until the U.S. can figure out “what is going on.” But he’s intensified his approach since Omar Mateen carried out the worst mass shooting in modern American history on June 12 at a gay club in Orlando, Florida. Forty-nine people were killed in the attack, which stoked a mix of fears about terrorism, guns and violence against gays.

Mateen’s motive isn’t clear, but a letter from the chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, Republican Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, said Mateen wrote on Facebook that “real Muslims will never accept the filthy ways of the West.” He also pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group, his ex-wife said he was mentally ill and his father suggested that gays had angered him.

Trump’s response to the tragedy was, in part, a pointed confrontation with Muslims, whom he singled out for know-

ing where terrorists are and not turning them into authorities. In the same speech, he also expanded his ban on Muslim immigration to include people from regions with a history of terrorism.

On Sunday, Trump also said the government should investigate mosques in the U.S. in much the same way the New York Police Department’s Demographics Unit spied on Muslims and mosques around the city with help from the CIA. The group assembled databases on where Muslims lived, shopped, worked and prayed, infiltrated Muslim student groups, put informants in mosques and monitored sermons, The Associated Press reported in 2011.

Under Mayor Bill de Blasio, the NYPD announced it had abandoned the program after lawsuits and complaints.

Americans are strikingly divided over whether to single out Muslim communities as part of a plan to fight terrorism, according to an APGfK poll conducted March 31 through April 4.

Forty-nine percent of respondents said they favor surveillance programs aimed at predominantly Muslim communities in the United States to obtain information about possible radicalization. Forty-seven percent of those surveyed opposed the practice.

Joliet Catholic football gets to work after graduating 20 starters

dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – During last week’s University of St. Francis 7-on-7 passing jamboree at Memorial Stadium, Joliet Catholic coach Dan Sharp said this may be the most important summer any of his teams have had.

The Hilltoppers reached the Class 5A state quarterfinals last season, where they lost, 35-21, to eventual champion Nazareth. They graduated 20 starters, most of whom are moving

on to play college football.

What’s left on the home front is a group that absorbed a significant amount as understudies but now must take advantage of their opportunity on the field. The learning process understandably will be slower than in other seasons.

“We lost a ton of talent, but the attitude has been great,” Sharp said.

“We’re not setting high expectations for this group at this time. Summer may be more important than at any other time.”

JCA was scheduled to be in the 7-on7 on Thursday only but also filled in Wednesday when a school from outside the area canceled.

“We were joking that yesterday we spent 40 minutes getting ready for this and we ran one play,” Sharp said.

“We’re definitely crawling before we walk this summer.”

The schedule also will be difficult.

The Hilltoppers open Aug. 26 at Franklin, Wisconsin, outside Milwaukee, then play at Wheaton North and travel to Hanson Stadium to face St. Patrick.

The first home game is Sept. 16 against Notre Dame, and the next week it will be time to gas up the buses again and head to Woodstock to face Marian Central.

The homecoming game against Nazareth is Sept. 30. That will be followed by two more road games before the Week 9 matchup at home against Marist. That means JCA will be away – and sometimes a long distance away – in six of the first eight weeks.

Slammers offense continues to roll, leads them to 4th straight win

cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – After outscoring their last three opponents by a 23-1 margin, the Joliet Slammers hoped to claim another victory in Sunday’s series finale against Schaumburg.

Thanks to another fine pitching performance, supported by a six-run outburst in the second inning and four home runs for the day, the Slammers were able to do just that, capturing a 12-4 Frontier League win at Silver Cross Field.

Schaumburg (16-17) entered the weekend on an eight-game winning streak, but that came to an abrupt halt after Joliet (20-14) pounded out 41 hits and 30 runs in the three games to pick up its fifth straight series win.

As a result of winning their fourth in a row to go six games over .500 for the first time this season, the Slammers remained one-half game behind East Division leader Windy City heading into Wednesday and Thursday games between the two in Crestwood.

“Coming into the year, our biggest question mark was who’s going to be

our five starters,” Slammers manager Jeff Isom said. “Those guys have defined themselves already and they just keep getting better, and that’s very encouraging. They all offer something a little bit different, so they compliment each other, which is nice to have, too.

Kaleb Ort has a good fastball and compliments it with some off-speed stuff that he was throwing for strikes.

“And at the plate, it’s been everyone contributing one way or another and we’re not relying on one single guy.

It was nice to see guys at the bottom of the order like Joe Staley and Phil Bates doing well, and it’s good to see production one through nine. During the season you see that we have two off days and you think ‘alright’ but with the way that we’re playing, you wish that you didn’t have any off days so that we can keep this rolling.”

The Slammers remained hot at home, winning for the 10th time in 14 tries after improving to 8-1 in their last nine games. Overall, Joliet has gone 12-3 since starting with an 8-11 mark.

shutout innings to get the victory. It was the fourth straight quality outing for the Slammers starters, who allowed one run, 15 hits and struck out 21 in 23 innings over that span.

“I felt good about it and worked well with (catcher Joe) Staley,” Ort said of his start. “We’re all throwing really well and everyone’s pounding the strike zone and doing what we can trying to make them hit the ball. And our offense is super hot right now. It’s mentally positive both ways. We’re up right now and playing really well.

“We hit the ball really well and our pitchers are also doing really well, so in every game, I’m excited to be out here. I like the guys on this team since every one has passion. Everyone comes out here and plays hard until the last minute of each game. I love it.”

Joliet scored all of the runs it would need in the second inning. Jake Gronsky walked before Denzel Richardson (2 for 4) singled him to third and took second on a wild pitch.

The familiar names back on offense are wingback Ke’Von Johnson and lineman Shane Raber, who played guard last season but could slide over to center this season. Both are juniors.

Senior Patrick Roth was the backup quarterback for Cade Earl a year ago and saw some quality time.

“Patrick Roth has worked very hard since last season ended,” Sharp said. “He’s very accurate and smart.

He played early last year when Cade went down and played well. It all starts with him.

“Ke’Von (Johnson), of course, had a great season. He came in and replaced Harry (Davis) when he broke his ankle.”

On the defensive side, safeties Patrick Tippet and Jack Duffy are noteworthy. Tippet played a lot last season and Duffy would have, but missed most of the season with a kneecap injury suffered in a tackling drill in practice.

“Everyone else is new,” Sharp said.

“Our whole defensive line is new. We have 55 guys right now, and nine of them are sophomores we have practicing with us. Some of them may be with the varsity.”

“It’s different with all those guys gone, but the guys last year did a good job teaching us what it’s all about,” he said. “It’s about getting better every day. It is easy to get excited about Joliet Catholic football, so it’s not that hard to put in the work.

“We’ll have a lot of guys starting who were on varsity last year and learned from the guys in front of

them.”

Roth said he feels he and the team will be ready when the bell rings.

“I played a majority of the game in Week 2 last year against Wheaton North, and I feel I got some good experience,” he said. “We have a diverse group of guys on offense. We can do different things.”

Of course, no one in a skill position succeeds without a good offensive line.

The Slammers have now hit 22 home runs in the month of June and have collected 35 during the season, which ranks them second in the league in that category.

After the Boomers pulled to within 9-3 in the top of the eighth, Joliet scored three runs in the bottom of the frame.

Staley singled and Rodriguez reached on an error before Vazquez got an RBI double to right. Then Carter Bell hit a two-run double to left to give him 34 RBI, which leads the league.

“We definitely will have some big guys up front, but it’s going to be tough to match the experience those guys last year had,” Roth said. “But I’m very excited and very confident about this year. There’s no doubt we will hit the ground running.”

Johnson certainly will. He brought the oohs and ahs, along with a few playful hollers, from the JCA sideline with the moves he displayed during the 7-on-7.

“Wherever I throw it, I know Ke’Von will go get it,” Roth said.

“When he gets out in the open, nobody is catching him.”

Johnson smiled when he answered a question about his size. “Maybe 170 pounds, and I’m 5-7,” he said.

Some bad news for JCA opponents – Johnson said he is working on “his speed, agility and getting better catching the ball this summer. I feel like I’m a lot faster.”

When Johnson stepped in to replace Davis last season, he received on-thejob training from one of the area’s top running backs, Michael Johnson.

“I learned a lot from Mike,” Johnson said. “From the second I came up to varsity, he was like a big brother to me. We really didn’t have any dropoff in the backfield. Our chemistry was good right away, and then when we got Harry back, it was even better. We were all good friends.

“The guys last year taught me a lot about leadership, too.”

JOLIET – Two years ago, Wilmington won its first state football championship, claiming the Class 3A title with a thrilling 20-17 victory over Williamsville.

As might be expected, the Wildcats graduated an abundance of talent off that team. While that could have been bad news for some, Wilmington, during the regime of longtime head coach Jeff Reents, reloads rather than rebuilds.

Last season served as a prime example. Having to replace all those outstanding talents from the state championship season, the Wildcats won their first 10 games before dropping a wild 42-35 decision to Byron in Round 2 of the state playoffs.

Reents took over the Wilmington program in the 1994 season. His teams missed the playoffs the first two years, but never since. The Wildcats extended their streak of playoffs appearances to 20 last fall, and 2015 marked the 10th time in that span that they posted an undefeated regular season.

In his 22 years, Reents’ overall record is 195-52, meaning the Wildcats have won 78.9 percent of their games under his guidance. If all goes as it has in the past, sometime in midseason this fall, Wilmington will celebrate Reents’ 200th victory at the school.

While running back Nick Hawkins, tight end Steve Smock and linemen Bailey Bowell and Ben Studer were among the big-name graduation losses from last season, the Wildcats’ cupboard this fall is far from bare.

On offense, for example, wingback Owen Weaver returns. In what began as a supporting role for Hawkins last season, Weaver became a 1,000-yard rusher. Quarterback Jeff Treadman started all last season as a junior.

“Treadman knows the scheme.

Now that he’s a senior, it’s up to him to run with it,” Wildcats longtime offensive coordinator Barry Southall said during last week’s University of St. Francis 7-on-7 passing jamboree at Memorial Stadium.

“In our double-wing offense, it is crucial that the quarterback is able to get to the line of scrimmage and change plays based on what he sees,” Reents said. “Jeff (Treadman) has really grown up in that area.”

“Another good player we have is our tight end, Sam Jones,” Reents said. “He will do some good things.”

The faces under the helmets change year to year, but the results are consistent.

“We did have to replace a lot of kids last year off the state team,” Reents said. “The result was we had a lot of juniors who played last year.

“We lost some great kids, like Nick Hawkins and Bailey Boswell, off last year’s team. But we had a fine team and we have quite a few linemen and Owen Weaver back.”

The starting defensive backfield graduated, but Kelly and Treadman may help bolster that area.

“Our approach every summer is the same,” Reents said. “We do a ton of teaching. We appreciate USF doing this for us, giving us an opportunity to go against some bigger programs.”

The other all-important element also is in place for the Wildcats.

“What is looking good is that these kids out here are showing good leadership,” Reents said.

Dustin Johnson wins U.S. Open for first major title

OAKMONT, Pa. – All the chaos and confusion couldn’t stop Dustin Johnson from proving he had the head to be a U.S. Open champion.

One year after the most devastating of all his close calls in the major, Johnson endured two hours of not knowing the size of his lead while the USGA questioned whether he should be penalized one stroke for his ball moving on the fifth green.

Johnson said it didn’t. The USGA said it would wait until after the final round to decide.

America’s most powerful golfer took matters into his own hands Sunday at Oakmont with a 10-foot par save on the 16th hole, a tee shot he smashed down the middle of the 18th fairway and an approach to 5 feet for birdie that left no doubt who won the toughest test in golf.

Only after he was guaranteed that silver trophy did the USGA assess him a one-shot penalty, turning his final score into a 1-under 69 for a threeshot victory.

The lingering question was whether this U.S. Open was tougher than it needed to be.

Johnson had a short par putt on the fifth hole, took a few practice strokes and as he placed the putter behind the ball, it moved slightly – backward.

Johnson stepped back and called over the rules official, told him it didn’t move and he tapped in for par.

The USGA later decided to review it, and the timing was peculiar.

Johnson was in deep rough left of the 10th fairway when he was given relief from a television tower in his line-of-sight to the flag. He was able to move left toward the 11th fairway and drop it in the first cut of rough, and he powered it over the tower and onto the green, setting up a par. It was a huge break – within the rules – the kind that major champions often get.

One hole later, the USGA informed they had questions about the ball moving on No. 5.

“After looking at video, the actions he took could have caused the ball to move,” said Jeff Hall, director of rules and open championships for the USGA. “We asked if there was some other reason the ball could have moved. He didn’t state a reason.”

The USGA wanted him to know that a one-shot penalty was likely so he could play accordingly, but it led to confusion over the back nine – for Johnson and for the players trying to catch him.

Johnson played through it all, thinking only of that silver trophy that got away from him at Chambers Bay last year when he had a 12-foot eagle putt to win and then three-putted for par to lose by one to Jordan Spieth.

ting touch that had carried him to the lowest 54-hole total at Oakmont. He three-putted from long range on three straight holes, and Johnson was flawless at the end.

Johnson finished at 4-under 276.

He gave three quick fist-pumps when the birdie putt fell on the 18th, hugged his brother, Austin, who caddies for him and scooped up his son Tatum on Father’s Day. Among the first to greet him was Jack Nicklaus, who won his first major at Oakmont in 1962. The gold medal for the winner is named after Nicklaus.

OAKLAND, Calif. – LeBron James cradled the shiny gold trophy and struggled to sum up what might be his sweetest championship yet, the one he is so proudly bringing home to his native northeast Ohio just as he promised to do when he returned to the Cavaliers two summers ago.

James and his relentless, nevercount-them-out Cavs pulled off an improbable NBA Finals comeback, and Cleveland is title town again at long last.

Unfazed by the criticism and chatter all series, James delivered on a vow to his home state and brought the Cavs back as they became the first team to rally from a 3-1 finals deficit, beating the defending champion Golden State Warriors, 93-89, on Sunday night to end a 52-year major sports championship drought in Cleveland.

“I’m happy to be a part of history,” James said, then added, “I’m home. I’m home. ... I’m at a loss for words. This is unbelievable.”

In a testy series of blowouts – and a few blowups – the winner-take-all Game 7 providing the thrilling finale with James as the finals MVP disarming twotime reigning MVP Stephen Curry and his record-setting Warriors.

James almost single-handedly carried the Cavs back into this series and finished with 27 points, 11 assists and 11 rebounds as the Cavs captured their first championship in franchise history and gave their city its first major sports winner since the Browns won the NFL title in 1964. He also had three blocked shots and two steals, overcoming five turnovers.

“CLEVELAND! This is for you!”

James bellowed in his postgame interview before being announced as finals MVP. An emotional James fell to the floor when this one ended with a second win in six days on Golden State’s imposing home floor, surrounded by his teammates. Only seconds earlier, he went down in pain with 10.6 seconds left after being fouled by Draymond Green while going for a dunk, then came back out to make the second of two free throws.

After four successful seasons in Miami, James came back to the Cavs and vowed to win the title this franchise and championship-starved city so coveted.

Another major contributor to hearing loss is sudden or continual exposure to loud noise, called noise-induced hearing loss. It typically affects those who work in construction, farming, the music industry, airports, the armed forces and tree cutters.

Exposure to loud noise can cause tinnitus, which is a ringing, hissing or roaring sound from within the ears.

Other causes of hearing loss are viruses, bacteria, heart conditions, stroke, head injuries, tumors and some medications, adds the Foundation.

Medical conditions such as diabetes and hypertension (high blood pressure) can also result in hearing loss. There are multiple types of genetic hearing loss.

Ramirez’s 10th inning single gives Indians win

CLEVELAND – The home-field advantage worked to perfection for the Cleveland Indians on Sunday.

Jose Ramirez’s two-out single with the bases loaded in the 10th inning skipped past first baseman Jose Abreu to score the winning run as the Indians completed a three-game sweep of the White Sox with a 3-2 victory.

Indians manager Terry Francona jokingly gave credit to another source for the ball bouncing past Abreu and into right field.

“Maybe to our grounds crew for putting that hop in there, too, an assist from them,” he said. “We talk about it a lot, when you’re at home, just like when you are on the road, if something goes wrong, it’s nice to be the home team.”

son (0-1) gave Cleveland its second last at-bat win of the series. Cleveland won Friday night’s game when Carlos Santana hit a leadoff homer in the ninth off Nate Jones.

The Indians, who lead the AL Central, are 7-2 against the Sox, including six straight wins.

Davis, who was 4 for 5, doubled to start the 10th. Following Jason Kipnis’ sacrifice, Francisco Lindor and Mike Napoli were walked intentionally to load the bases.

After Santana fouled out, Ramirez came through with his winning hit.

“Rajai had a great day and that bad hop doesn’t really matter if you don’t have anybody on base,” Francona said.

Ramirez found himself on the bottom of a pile of teammates in the middle of the infield after his clutch hit.

“Lindor and Kipnis were hitting me really hard,” Ramirez said

through a translator. “This year I have to continue winning games like I am, and I’ll keep giving it hard to them just like they’re giving it to me.”

The Sox trail the Indians by 51/2 games in the division. The Sox are 10-26 since starting the season with a 23-10 record.

“We were trying everything,” said manager Robin Ventura, who went with a five-man infield on Santana’s foul out in the 10th. “It’s a tough one to lose.”

Dan Otero (2-0) struck out Abreu with a runner on first to end the 10th.

Chicago second baseman Brett Lawrie kept the game tied with an outstanding defensive play to end the ninth. Juan Uribe doubled off Nate Jones with one out.

After Yan Gomes struck out, Lawrie made a diving stop of Michael Martinez’s hard-hit grounder and threw to first for the out.

CHICAGO – Prized prospect Willson Contreras crushed the first pitch he saw in the major leagues for a two-run home run, Kyle Hendricks struck out a career-high 12 in six innings Sunday night and the Cubs completed a sweep of the fading Pittsburgh Pirates with a 10-5 victory.

Contreras, called up from Triple-A on Friday, pinch hit for Hendricks in the sixth and sent A.J. Schugel’s changeup an estimated 415 feet to center. The cheering crowd didn’t let up until the 24-year-old Venezuelan catcher obliged with a curtain call.

Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo hit consecutive home runs in the third and Javier Baez added a solo shot for the Cubs, all off rookie Jameson Taillon (1-1). Addison Russell hit a two-run shot in the seventh for the Cubs, who have eight homers in two games.

Low-dose vaginal estrogen cream carries very little risk Dear Dr. K: Vaginal estrogen cream cures my vaginal dryness. But I hear estrogen is risky for the heart. Should I be concerned?

Dear Reader: Basically, I wouldn’t worry. Here’s why. Vaginal estrogen cream is one form of hormone therapy (HT).

HT is estrogen taken alone or with other female hormones to treat the symptoms of menopause. “Systemic” HT involves hormones that enter the blood and travel throughout the body. It is the most effective treatment for postmenopausal hot flashes and vaginal symptoms, including vaginal dryness.

Systemic HT is medicine taken by mouth or through the skin by a skin patch or gel. From those locations, it enters the blood. But systemic HT carries with it a small risk of several serious conditions. In women who started menopause more than 10 years ago, there is an increased risk of heart attack and stroke.

For all women, there is an increased risk of blood clots and breast cancer (when progestins are included with estrogen).

Low-dose vaginal estrogen is available in several forms: creams, tablets (such as Vagifem) and other kinds of vaginal rings. Creams, tablets and most vaginal rings act mostly in the vagina. They relieve vaginal symptoms, including vaginal dryness, burning and pain with sexual intercourse. They do not relieve hot flashes.

Some vaginal estrogen creams are higher dose (more concentrated); some amount of estrogen is absorbed into the blood.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff Those vaginal estrogen treatments that release little estrogen into the bloodstream have less risk of side effects than systemic estrogen. So far, no well-designed clinical trials have evaluated systemic risks, such as breast cancer or blood clots, of low-dose vaginal estrogen.

But it’s likely that if there are such risks, they are much smaller than the risks related to systemic estrogen.

One complication of menopause women don’t often think of is recurrent urinary tract infections. Vaginal dryness not only causes vaginal symptoms such as discomfort during sex, but also encourages the growth of certain bacteria around the urethra – the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the vagina. If those bacteria get into the urethra, and then into the bladder, a UTI can start.

Apart from the high-dose Femring, vaginal estrogen is probably safe even over the long term. And if your main menopausal symptoms are vaginal symptoms, vaginal estrogen is just as effective as systemic HT and less risky. But talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits before you start – particularly if you have a history of breast cancer.

DEAR ABBY I live with my parents and Jeanne am not fond of Phillips children. My father volunteers me to baby-sit my nieces while they are right in front of us and before I have a chance to discuss anything. If I stand up for myself and say no, my father lays a guilt trip on me and tells the kids their aunt is “being mean.”

I’m grateful my parents took me in after I graduated from university, which has allowed me to work on a second degree. However, when I am volunteered to do something I don’t enjoy – such as entertain the kids – my father somehow always manages to leave the house. He often lectures me about things I should do or things others should do, but he never does any of them himself. His excuse is he works to support us financially.

Am I being ungrateful and should I grin and bear it? Or should I do an intervention with Dad when the kids aren’t over? – Overtired Aunt Dear Overtired: Assuming you have told your father your feelings, he may feel because he supports you, he has the right to volunteer your services. What might work would be to tell your sibling how you feel about being trapped into doing it – and about kids in general. I know I wouldn’t want any children of mine to be around someone who resents having to care for them. Perhaps your sibling will feel the same.

Dear Abby: I have had cancer for 12 years.

This will be my last year. The chemo treatment was getting stronger and making me sick longer. I told most of my siblings I decided on no more chemo. The doctor warned my daughter eight months ago there will be no stopping the progression of my disease.

My daughter has a lot on her plate right now, finding and buying a house, getting a new job and planning her wedding for next year. I have tried to help her plan for my death, but it only upsets her.

Ambrose Bierce, author of “The Devil’s Dictionary,” said, “The covers of this book are too far apart.”

Last week, we looked at “cover an honor with an honor” and found that it is usually right not to cover the first of touching honors, but to cover the last ... as long as it might gain a trick. However, as you are well aware, bridge stays healthy because there are exceptions to the rules. This week, so that the columns are not far apart, we will look at when you should break that cover-an-honor rule.

The first one features a tough play to find. South is in three notrump, and West leads the spade queen to declarer’s king. What happens after that?

South starts with six top tricks: two spades, one heart, two diamonds and one club. Clearly, he must try to establish and run dummy’s club suit.

He starts by leading his club 10. If West plays his low club (do not cover the first of touching honors), declarer runs the 10. Even if East ducks the trick, South will intentionally lose the second round of clubs, collect four club tricks, and take nine in all.

Now, though, let’s return to trick two. When dummy has a good suit like that and no side entry, West should immediately cover with his queen. What does declarer do then?

If he wins with dummy’s ace, East ducks the second club, takes the third, and plays a spade. Or, if South plays low from the board, planning to run the club jack on the second round of the suit, the contract will go down, because the defenders will take three spades and two clubs.
