Plainfield District 202 board approves new finance director

fsarver@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield District 202 board approved a new finance director who hails from a district that Superintendent Lane Abrell once led.

At Monday’s meeting, the board approved appointing Rose Kidd to serve as the finance director starting July 1. She will replace Rick Engstrom. Next year, Engstrom will be the new assistant superintendent for business and operations, a position that Jack Markley serves in.

Board member Rod Westfall was absent from the meeting.

Board President Michelle Smith introduced Kidd at Monday’s meeting, saying Kidd is the business manager for Leland School District 1, which is in LaSalle County.

educator Joan Woolwine, who serves as the director of elementary curriculum and instruction.

The award was established in 1986 to honor the legacies of former district Superintendent Walter Niehus and his wife, Juanita, according to a District 202 news release. It is given each year to either certified personnel or noncertified staff and support staff members who are nominated by their peers and who show extraordinary commitment to students, parents and employees, district officials said.

Starr said Woolwine has spent 19 years at District 202 as a teacher, principal and administrator and she has shown endless enthusiasm for her work.

“An organization – as we all know – is only as strong as its people and this year’s winner is a prime example of the strength embodied by one of our very own,” Starr said.

Motorcycle rally planned to honor Minooka man

bstanley@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Friends of a Minooka man killed in a motorcycle crash four years ago have organized a ride to honor his life and criticize what they deem a lenient sentence for the driver responsible.

“Justice For Ron Oswald” will begin at 10:30 a.m. July 17 when riders meet at Double J Sports Bar, 1001 Essington Road in Joliet.

On July 14, 2012, Oswald was riding his Harley-Davidson near County Line Road and Route 126 in Plainfield when the driver of a Dodge Durango slammed into a Nissan Altima and pushed it into Oswald’s path. Oswald was killed and the family of four in the Altima was injured.

The driver of the Durango, Andrew W. Henderson, 28, of Palos Park was under the influence of heroin and Vicodin. Henderson pleaded guilty to aggravated driving under the influence and was initially sentenced by Judge Carla Alessio Policandriotes to nine years in prison.

friend Barbara Fitzpatrick said. “He killed somebody and gets two years and a slap on the wrist. We want to bring awareness to what happened [and] get these judges to stop this [giving of] light sentences.”

Oswald was an active member of Will County ABATE, which stands for A Brotherhood Aimed Toward Education, an organization that promotes motorcycle safety and legislation to protect riders. He was on his way to meet Fitzpatrick and other riders to escort a soldier being deployed when he was killed.

Riders will leave Double J’s at 11:30 a.m. to pass the cemetery where Oswald is buried and then the crash site.

“We’re going to complete his final ride,” Fitzpatrick said. “We’re expecting 200 riders.”

The procession will end at Tap House, 24402 Lockport St., Plainfield, where the event will finish with “prayers and anybody who wants to get up and talk about Ron can,” Fitzpatrick said.

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – American flags are flying at half-staff across the United States today, a symbol of the nation’s respect for the 49 people killed in the mass shooting in Orlando.

It’s also a reminder of how important the flag is to the nation and why it should be treated with respect, said Don Waldron, a past commander of American Legion Post 1080 in Joliet.

“That’s just one way of how we can pay respect to people,” Waldron said.

But the flag should be treated with respect, too, he emphasized.

Tuesday is Flag Day, held to recognize the importance of the Stars and Stripes and to remember to treat the American flag with respect.

“Our flag represents our country,” Waldron said. “Many gave their all so the flag can fly and represent us as well as our nation. It’s very understandable that the flag means a lot to

many people.”

Waldron and other members of the American Legion think enough of the flag that they make a point when seeing one in bad condition.

“It should always be respected and kept in good shape,” Waldron said.

“Once in a while we go by a place and see a flag that is tattered. We stop by and say something to people. Most of the time, there is no bitterness, and the next day a new flag is flying.”

Proper display and disposal

The National Flag Code was adopted in 1923.

The list of rules for flag display includes the following: “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”

The dignified destruction of a tattered flag often confuses people.

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A four-year mission to bring a Civil War flag back to Will County has been completed.

The flag of the 100th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment, which was primarily made up of soldiers from Will County, will be part of a special exhibit that starts June 30 at a respectful burning during a ceremony at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the post, which is at 2625 Ingalls Ave. The ceremony is one of many held at American Legion and Veterans of Foreign War posts to recognize Flag Day. But the Elks Club, a fraternal organization, takes Flag Day as seriously as any veterans post.

Silver Cross Field keeps IHSA tournament

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Illinois High School Association Class 3A and 4A baseball tournament will return to Silver Cross Field for five more years.

The IHSA board voted Monday to keep the tournament in Joliet, where it has been for the past 10 years.

“Silver Cross Field is a great venue for championship high school baseball in Illinois,” IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson said in a written statement.

The tournament is important to city officials, who see it as an opportunity to showcase Joliet to thousands of visitors who come with the teams.

The Joliet Slammers, which operates Silver Cross Field, also view the tour-

nament as an opportunity to market the stadium experience to visitors who may come back to see the Slammers play.

Anderson’s statement credited the work going into the tournament, which includes volunteers from Joliet Township High School District 210.

“The surrounding community has really come out to support the tournament and teams throughout the years,” Anderson said. “There is no doubt that all of the venues who submitted bids have first-class facilities that would have done great jobs as hosts, but we feel like we have a good thing going with Silver Cross Field, the Joliet Slammers and Joliet Township, and are proud to return.”

Others stadiums bidding for the tournament were the Corn Crib in

Normal, Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in Geneva and Boomers Stadium in Schaumburg.

Any IHSA officials at the tournament Friday and Saturday likely would have been impressed by the large crowds for the games. Attendance was high with Providence Catholic winning an unprecedented third consecutive Class 4A championship.

The Slammers only count attendance through the day, not for individual games. But Friday attendance was 4,849, which exceeded the seating capacity of 4,200 at Silver Cross Field.

Total capacity at the stadium is 5,500, which includes grassy areas along the outfield lines and the concourse area.

Slammers General Manager Heather Mills said most of the Friday at-

tendance was for the Providence vs.

Plainfield North semifinal match-up.

“That’s bigger than it has been the last couple of years,” Mills said. “But anytime we have Will County teams, we get over 4,000.”

The Providence-Plainfield North game also ended while New Orleans North, an outdoor event modeled after Mardi Gras, was going on, adding to a festive atmosphere downtown.

Joliet Economic Development Director Steve Jones said there are plans to hold New Orleans North on the Friday night of the tournament in future years to add to the experience of people visiting Joliet.

“There’s something for families to do. There’s something for [IHSA] officials to do,” Jones said. “It adds to the downtown party atmosphere.”

9-year-old boxer to compete for national championship

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – And in this corner, weighing in at 75 pounds and standing 4 feet 9 inches tall – “The Homework Finisher” – Joseph “Jo Jo” Awinongya!

The 9-year-old boxer is expected to be the only participant from Illinois at Team USA’s Prep National Championships in Dallas, which kick off June 26.

The championships represent another step toward the Farragut Elementary School fourth-grader’s goal of joining the Olympic team in 2024.

“He just loves [boxing], so I’ve been working on teaching him the skills,” said his father, also named Joseph Awinongya, a former professional fighter from Ghana. “It wasn’t something I made him do.”

“Jo Jo,” who trains with his father at Chicago Sports & Fitness Club in Joliet, has a 7-3 record in contests around the Chicago area and recently took the championship in the Silver Gloves Statewide Tournament for his age group.

Eight 9- and 10-year-olds will be fighting in the 75-pound weight class at the national championships, where Joseph will fight three times in six days. Each match consists of three one-minute rounds that will be webcast.

“We’ve been researching the other fighters and there’s one southpaw that might be trouble, but I think he’s going to do very well,” his father said.

Lewis University Airport receives $2.6 million in federal funding

fsarver@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – About $2.6 million in federal funding was awarded to Lewis University Airport in Romeoville for improvements.

The airport is one of three to receive federal funding to improve safety and efficiency, according to a news release from U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Illinois, which stated he has worked to increase funding for critical transportation and infrastructure programs for the state.

Lewis University Airport will use the money for improvements to the runway safety area.

Romeoville Mayor John Noak and a representative with the Joliet Regional Port District, which runs the airport, did not immediately respond to requests for comment Monday afternoon.

Both received funding totaling about $2.2 million.

“Investing in our small airports is key for Illinois’ future economic well-being,” Durbin said in the news release, noting the funds will pay for needed upgrades, create jobs and bring business to the state.

The grants were awarded through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration.

Lewis University Airport has been owned since 1989 by the Joliet Regional Port District, a special district in Will County, according to the district’s website.

The website states that since the purchase of the airfield, there has been more than $80 million invested in the facility to meet the needs of corporate aircraft.

bstanley@shawmedia.com BRAIDWOOD – A Braidwood police officer made his sixth “heroin save” Friday night, using an antidote to counteract a potentially fatal drug overdose.

Officer Chris Altiery was the first to arrive when emergency services

were called at 10:55 p.m. to an apartment in the 100 block of Cermak Road where a 28-year-old woman was found unresponsive, Chief Nick Ficarello Chris Altiery said.

“Officer Altiery recognized she was showing signs of a

heroin overdose and used three doses of Narcan spray,” Ficarello said.

“She revived and paramedics continued treating her.”

The woman admitted to Altiery she’d used a greater amount of heroin “than she usually does” and had also combined the drug with Xanax, Ficarello said.

Braidwood police officers began

carrying Narcan in December. Altiery has arrived in time to use the spray at five previous incidents.

Ficarello said heroin use remains a significant problem in Braidwood and police are developing a program with drug counselors to offer to addicts.

“We want to help before you need the spray,” he said.

Two teens arrested in Plainfield car burglaries

The girl, who was identified as a girlfriend of one of the suspects, was not charged, Fisher said.

Burnett, of the 800 block of Turtle Creek Court, was arrested on charges of burglary, theft, criminal trespassing and aggravated battery, and booked into the Will County Jail.

Fisher said officers searched Martin when he was taken into custody and found he was carrying narcotics.

Martin, of the 3900 block of Littlestone Circle, was arrested on charges of theft, criminal trespassing, drug possession and marijuana possession and booked into the Will County Jail.

“Once again, we just want to remind people to lock their doors whenever they park their cars outside. [These suspects] were only going into open vehicles,” Fisher said.

PLAINFIELD – Two Naperville teens were arrested early Sunday after an off-duty cop allegedly spotted them burglarizing unlocked cars.

About 4 a.m. the man was driving home when he noticed the pair at a vehicle in the 13000 block of Skyline Drive in Plainfield, Plainfield Sgt. Mike Fisher said.

“He called 911 to alert our agency

and then approached them and identified himself as a police officer,” Fisher said. “He was able to detain one of them for a brief time before the suspect struck him and fled.”

Though the off-duty officer lost sight of his quarry, police arrived and searched the area, Fisher said. Reed R. Martin, 18, and Justin T. Burnett, 18, were found talking to a girl in a garage in the 12000 block of Shenandoah Trail in Plainfield and identified as the suspects.

The flag is the actual flag carried into battle by the 100th Illinois, Kuzma said.

Kuzma initiated the effort to bring back the flag, which has been located in a Springfield museum. Before it could be moved to Joliet, the silk flag, which is more than 150 years old, needed to be restored to a condition in which it could be put on display.

Kuzma said the flag has been “cleaned, flattened and stabilized as much as possible to make sure no further deterioration occurs.”

The flag, which is 6 feet by 6.5 feet, is at the museum now.

“It’s a very large flag,” museum Director Greg Peerbolte said. “They were large by design. Back before the

“The other reality is what causes you to get in trouble [in the water],” Riddle said. “You may get tripped or hooked to something, or have a medical emergency cause you to drop. At that point, you don’t have a lot of options.”

Riddle agreed with former Wilmington Mayor Roy Strong, who said May 31 that even if there was a rescue boat ready to mobilize at shore, both children likely would not have survived because of the current’s strength. Others have drowned at the Wilmington dam.

Will County Emergency Management Agency Director Harold Damron said dams on navigable waterways such as the Kankakee River fall under state or federal jurisdiction, but the agency typically responds in situations where the search-and-rescue effort is ongoing.

Damron said, citing a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers representative, that most dams that are removed or modified are subject to such action for environmental reasons, such as improved water quality and fish migration – but saving lives could be an added bonus. JOLIET – Three people from Joliet died recently, less than a week apart, as a result of water-related incidents in the Mazon and Kankakee rivers.

Henry L. Craig, 70, died May 26 in Morris after falling into the Mazon River – a feeder stream to the Illinois River – while fishing. Four days later, siblings Abigail and Eder Arroyo drowned at the Kankakee River dam in Wilmington.

Plainfield Fire Protection District Chief and MABAS 15 President David Riddle said recreation in or around bodies of water is an “attractive hazard,” especially in the warmer months. The challenge lies in preventing that hazard.

Rivers are different from a pond, pool or small lake, he said. When first responders arrive on scene at a river, it’s almost always for a recovery mission – not a life-saving one.

“People don’t realize the danger of rivers,” Riddle said. “It looks serene

and gentle flowing over those dams. It doesn’t look as dangerous or deadly as it actually is.”

Swimmers and anglers are often unaware of not only the power of the current, but what’s hidden under the waters’ surface, he said. Riddle noted that depending on the river, there could be slabs of concrete with rebar, large moving logs and branches, or even cars under water.

He said using proper precautions – such as letting someone know where you’re going and making sure children have adult supervision and flotation devices – may not be enough to save a life.

“I don’t want to say it’s impossible to rescue in these situations, but so many things have to fall in place to do so,” Riddle said. “You can use all proper precautions and still might end up in danger.”

Man seriously injured in motorcycle crash

bstanley@shawmedia.com CREST HILL – A Chicago man was critically injured Sunday morning in a motorcycle crash in Crest Hill.

Police Chief Dwayne Wilkerson said the incident happened at 4:55 a.m. on Renwick Road near Borio Drive where the lanes are reduced.

“According to a passing driver, he hit the curb where the lanes come together, became separated from the bike and fell into the roadway,” Wilkerson said.

The motorcycle rider, a 62-yearold Chicago man, was not wearing a helmet. Wilkerson said he was riding a 2012 Harley-Davidson Cruiser east and was not accompanied by any other riders.

The rider was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and remained in intensive care as of Monday afternoon, according to police reports.

Identity theft skyrockets in Minooka, police report 65 new cases since Friday

MINOOKA – Reports of identity theft in Minooka have skyrocketed.

In addition to the 10 cases reported in a nine-day span as of Friday morning, Minooka police received an additional 65 reports between then and late Monday

afternoon, when the police department issued a news release on the matter.

Each incident is different and the spree is not related to a single business, according to the news release.

Police have not ruled out skimming devices and are working with a financial crimes task force, the news release stated, and investigating the possible

use of credit card scanners. Thieves with scanners stand next to customers in line and scan credit or debit cards in wallets or purses.

The veteran film, TV and radio

Waldo was featured in the futuristic series “The Jetsons,” which initially aired in the 1960s. Her other credits included Josie in “Josie and the Pussycats” and Fred Flintstone’s mother-in-law in “The Flintstones.”

Before “The Jetsons,” Waldo had

been an actress for decades, appearing on such sitcoms as “I Love Lucy” and “The Andy Griffith Show,” plus dozens of movies and radio programs.

Waldo’s husband, playwright Robert Edwin Lee, died in 1994.

Preceded in death by her husband, Rolland Nobis (1979); her parents, George and Ethel (Grams) Gaus; and a sister, Carol Brill.

State board OKs remap item for ballot

CHICAGO – A measure that would let Illinois voters decide whether an independent commission should draw political boundaries inched closer to the November ballot Monday with a state board’s approval, though a pending lawsuit could derail the efforts.

The State Board of Elections unanimously endorsed its lawyer’s findings: Random sampling showed the group, Independent Map Amendment, had enough valid signatures for the ballot.

“This is a huge hurdle that we’ve cleared,” Independent Map spokesman Dave Mellet said.

What remains is the outcome of a Cook County lawsuit questioning whether the measure is constitutional, along with a final certification by election officials.

The Independent Map group wants an 11-member

commission – with a partisan mix – to determine congressional and legislative political districts, a process that takes place each decade based on census figures. Two years ago, a judge ruled a similar remap effort wasn’t constitutional and couldn’t be on the ballot. The 2014 petition drive was also hampered by signature and paperwork problems election officials called “a mess.”

There was no evidence of that Monday, with election authorities saying a 5 percent random sample of the over 560,000 collected signatures showed sufficient valid signatures and no challenges had been filed. Independent Map collected nearly double the 290,216 signatures required.

Backers of the proposed initiative say they learned from the previous effort and revamped their proposal. Their push has also been better funded and publicized by a coalition of business and civic leaders.

The lawsuit was brought by attorneys including Michael Kasper, who also argued against the 2014

proposal and has represented Illinois’ top Democrats, including House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton. The new lawsuit argues the proposed initiative doesn’t meet constitutional requirements and imposes new duties on the auditor general, among other things. Oral arguments are scheduled for June 30.

Election officials said Monday that they would wait for the lawsuit’s outcome before they certified the constitutional amendment for November’s ballot.

By law, they face an Aug. 26 deadline to do so.

Currently in Illinois, the party in power controls mapmaking. The Independent Map Amendment argues their proposal will make the process more transparent and fair.

When the state last drew political lines, Democrats controlled the General Assembly and governor’s office. Current maps were signed into law in 2011 but underwent several legal challenges by Republicans.

CHICAGO – A bill is awaiting action from Gov. Bruce Rauner that would give Illinois police training and authorization to carry epinephrine auto-injectors to help with severe allergic reactions.

The measure is named after Annie LeGere, a 13-year-old Elmhurst girl who died after having a severe allergic reaction at a sleepover, The Chicago Tribune reported.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, food allergies in children have grown 50 percent from 1997 to 2011.

Annie’s mother, Shelly LeGere, said she has made it her mission to equip first responders with the injectors such as the EpiPen. School nurses and other school employees are legally allowed to use the injectors.

“Had the officer who was first on the scene (for Annie) had an EpiPen, our life would be different right now,” LeGere said. “But that’s no one’s fault because it was against the law for them.”

LeGere said she wants to allocate money raised by her nonprofit organization to police departments to buy auto-injectors after police officers are trained.

NEW YORK – McDonald’s is moving back to Chicago and taking over the old home of “The Oprah Winfrey Show.”

The world’s biggest hamburger chain said Monday that it signed a lease to move its corporate headquarters in 2018 from the leafy suburbs of Oak Brook to downtown Chicago. The move makes it the latest big company to trade suburbia for city offices in an attempt to attract young workers who prefer living in urban areas.

The company’s new home will be on the site that once housed Harpo Studios, where filming of “The Oprah Winfrey Show” took place until 2011. Harpo Stu-

Orlando killer appears to be ‘homegrown extremist’

ORLANDO, Fla. – The gunman whose attack on a gay nightclub left 49 victims dead appears to have been a “homegrown extremist” who espoused support for a jumble of often-conflicting Islamic radical groups, the White House and the FBI said Monday.

As Orlando mourned its dead with flowers, candles and vigils, counterterrorism investigators dug into the background of 29-year-old Omar Mateen, the American-born Muslim who carried out the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

“So far, we see no indication that this was a plot directed from outside the United States, and we see no indication that he was part of any kind of network,” FBI Director James Comey said. But he said Mateen was clearly “radicalized,” at least in part via the internet.

Comey said the bureau also is trying to determine whether Mateen had recently scouted Disney World as a potential target, as reported by People. com, which cited an unidentified federal law enforcement source.

“We’re still working through that,” Comey said.

The FBI chief defended the bureau’s handling of Mateen during two previous investigations into his apparent terrorist sympathies. As for whether there was anything the FBI should have done differently, “so far, the honest answer is, I don’t think so,” Comey said.

Despite Mateen’s pledge of fealty to the Islamic State, a murky combination of other possible motives and explanations emerged, with his ex-wife saying he suffered from mental illness and his Afghan-immigrant father suggesting he might have acted out of anti-gay hatred. He said his son got angry recently about seeing two men kiss.

Wielding an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle and a handgun, Mateen opened fire at Pulse Orlando early Sunday in a three-hour shooting rampage and hostage siege that ended with a SWAT team killing him. During the attack, he called 911 to profess allegiance to the Islamic State group.

At the White House, President Barack Obama said there is no clear evidence so far that Mateen was directed by the group, calling the attack an apparent example of “homegrown extremism.” Obama is traveling to Orlando on Thursday to pay his respects to the victims and stand in solidarity with the community, the White House said Monday evening.

More details of the bloodbath emerged, with Orlando Police Chief John Mina saying Mateen was “cool and calm”

during phone calls with police negotiators. But the chief said he decided to send the SWAT team in and bash through a wall after Mateen holed up with hostages in a bathroom and began to talk about bombs and an explosive vest.

“We knew there would be an imminent loss of life,” Mina said. As it turned out, Mateen had no explosives with him.

Five of the wounded were reported in grave condition, meaning the death toll could rise. A call went out for blood donations.

In Orlando, mourners piled bouquets around a makeshift memorial, and people broke down in tears and held their hands to their faces while passing through the growing collection of flowers, candles and signs about a mile from the site of the massacre. Later Monday evening, thousands gathered near the site for a vigil held on the lawn of the Dr. Phillips Center, the area’s main performing arts venue. Many in the crowd said they were inspired to attend because Pulse played a huge role in their lives as gays and lesbians.

“It was a place that a young 20-year-old who wasn’t openly gay felt safe for the first time,” said Cathleen Daus, now 36.

Poll shows voters blaming Madigan over Rauner in budget impasse The Democrats got a bit of good news and some serious bad news in a recent Capitol Fax/We Ask America poll. And that bad news is particularly negative for anyone who can be credibly connected to House Speaker Michael Madigan.

The poll of 1,231 registered Illinois voters found presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton leading presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump by 12 points, 47 to 35. An additional 7 percent said they were voting for Libertarian Party candidate Gary Johnson and 12 percent were undecided. The poll was taken June 5 to 6, had a margin of error of +/-3 percent and 39 percent of the responses came from mobile phone users.

John Kerry won this state by 12 points in 2004, the last time an Illinois resident wasn’t on the presidential ticket. So Clinton’s numbers are already aligning with Kerry’s. And the poll was taken before Illinois’ U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk and other Republicans withdrew their support from Trump.

Clinton is leading 67 to 17 in Chicago and 47 to 35 in suburban Cook County. Trump, however, is ahead 42 to 38 in the suburban collar counties and leads by 10 points, 45 to 35, among downstate voters – the location of some potentially very hot state legislative battles, so it’s not all good news for the Dems.

Then again, Democratic presidential candidates haven’t fared well in some downstate regions in a long time, but Democratic legislators have mostly managed to hold onto their seats.

When looking at gender, location and voting history, the Libertarian candidate Johnson does his best with folks who have voted in the last three Republican primaries, scoring 11 percent – not good news for Trump at all.

But as Gov. Bruce Rauner’s people have been warning for months, the Democratic House speaker is getting the blame for the yearlong governmental impasse by a huge margin.

“The Illinois General Assembly has once again adjourned its spring session without a budget agreement – an ongoing situation that some feel is caused by a clash between Governor Bruce Rauner and Speaker Mike Madigan,” poll respondents were told. They were then asked to assign blame between the two men.

The poll found that voters blame Madigan by a decisive 21-point margin, 55 to 34, with just 9 percent saying “both” and a mere 2 percent saying they were still undecided.

The polling company conducted a similar survey late last month for another client.

VIEWS Rich Miller principal Gregg Durham said there “seems to be a widening gap putting the Speaker in the lead in the budget blame game.” Durham noted that while Rauner enjoys “relative solidarity among Republican voters, Speaker Madigan’s numbers are comparatively soft among Democrats.” For example, 28 percent of people who have taken Democratic ballots two out of the last three cycles say Madigan is chiefly to blame. Independents blamed Madigan 49 to 39.

Durham also said there were significantly more people who said they were undecided in the earlier poll. So positions appear to be hardening.

Chicago is the only region that blames Rauner over Madigan for the impasse, 52 to 35. But there is only one contested race in the city, and Chicago GOP Rep. Michael McAuliffe’s district includes suburban Cook territory as well, where Madigan is blamed 54 to 36. And there are lots of expectedly competitive legislative races coming up in suburban Cook. About 7 percent blame both in Cook County and 3 percent are undecided.

Downstate voters predictably blame Madigan over Rauner 59 to 29, with 11 percent blaming both and an almost microscopic 1 percent saying they’re undecided. Just about everybody has an opinion on this one, and that opinion is not good for the Democrats.

Madigan does worst among collar-county voters, where 64 percent blame the Speaker and just 27 percent blame Rauner, with 2 percent undecided and 8 percent blaming both men.

Just 29 percent of men blame Rauner, but a very strong 62 percent blame Madigan. An additional 7 percent say both are to blame and 1 percent are undecided.

Fifty percent of female votes point their finger at Madigan as opposed to 38 percent who blame Rauner. Ten percent of women blame both and 3 percent are undecided.

The results reportedly confirm similar polling taken by the House Democrats and they definitely confirm polls taken by the Republicans. So why continue down this path? The answer from multiple sources is that Madigan is convinced it’s up to him to stop Rauner in his tracks, even if that means taking some losses.

Orlando and the gun debate In the wake of the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history, the debate about gun control once again is heating up.

It’s a discussion – contentious or not – we should be having, even though any ideas, good or not, seem to always stall in Congress.

We’ll simplify the debate by boiling it down to two key issues: • Should American citizens be able to buy assault-style weapons – weapons that can fire a large number of rounds in mere seconds – and all the ammunition they can get their hands on?

• Should anyone on the U.S. Terrorist Watch List be able to buy guns of any kind?

Congress debated this second question late last year in the wake of two mass shootings, one in California and one in Colorado. Ultimately, no such ban was passed.

Would Omar Mateen have been able to murder 49 innocent people and critically injure dozens more had Congress passed a ban on suspected terrorists from buying guns? He was on the watch

list when the FBI questioned him in 2013 and 2014 about possible ties to terrorism. But he was removed after those investigations were closed.

Whether or not such a ban would have prevented the Orlando massacre, we support enacting one now. It only makes sense.

Banning the sale of assault weapons is the larger, and more difficult, issue. Gun advocates say the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution prohibits such a restriction, but for 10 years (from 1994 to 2004) a federal law banning the sale of assault weapons was in place.

The issue is such a political hot button now that we realize passage of a similar ban is nearly impossible. But it should be considered.

We acknowledge that no legislation will ever be able to completely stop the Mateens of the world. A hate-filled individual hellbent on violence will commit a violent act. But can the damage be limited?

We as a country should take all possible steps to limit the carnage these terrorists are intent on inflicting on innocent victims.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Four Celtics had special roles in 3-peat As Providence Catholic enjoyed its record third-straight baseball title last Saturday at Silver Cross Field, players reflected on the many individuals who had a hand in creating history.

Coach Mark Smith’s Celtics were represented at the state finals by 55 different players during the past three seasons. And of that total, 22 individuals got the opportunity to be on more than one of the Class 4A championship squads.

But only four were able to make state history along with their program after becoming the first Illinois baseball players to be members of

VIEWS Curt Herron three-consecutive title squads. Those four seniors are Jim Jeffries, Mike Madej, Zack Pych and Jackson Stulas.

Considering it took more than 75 years for any program to win threestraight titles, it seems like a good bet that the Celtics’ foursome may be in exclusive company for a while.

Those four obviously played a huge role in not only leading Providence

to a 92-34 record during the last three years, but also in helping to end a 32year title drought in 2014 by claiming the school’s third state title before adding numbers four and five.

Despite finally being the favorites in a title game, things didn’t come easily for 33-9 Providence. It fell behind Mundelein 3-0 in the first inning and still trailed 3-1 in the fifth before scoring five runs in that inning and four more in the next to capture a 10-3 victory. That win was their 21st straight in the postseason, which is another state record.

Second baseman Madej played in

all but three of his team’s games in the past three years.

“Looking back on it, it’s going to be like, ‘Wow, I can’t believe that we did that,’ ” Madej said. “Even now, Jimmy and I, who are really close, are like, ‘How did we just do this?’ It’s insane.

In football, you can plan what you’re going to do against the other team to win. But this state title is completely different. A lot of people say that the ball didn’t bounce their way, but even when the ball didn’t bounce our way, we still found ways to overcome that.

‘Goofy’ touch helped build Providence 3-peat Two years ago, Providence baseball coach Mark Smith tagged the Celtics “the goofiest bunch I have had in 22 years of coaching.”

Providence won the Class 4A state tournament that spring. The Celtics had been playing tight – and not always that well – through much of the season.

Smith talked with the kids about playing loose and having fun, and the message stuck. They went on to win the championship in 2014 with Dylan Rosa supplying one huge hit after another.

Here we are two years later, and “goofy” has continued to wear Celtic green. That’s largely because second baseman Mike Madej, shortstop Jackson Stulas, third baseman Zach Pych and catcher Jim Jeffries last weekend completed the historic three-peat.

They were major contributors on three-straight state title teams.

So if they were goofy as sophomores, what about the last two years?

“Goofier and goofiest,” Smith said with a laugh. “Jackson Stulas is the biggest goofball you would ever

Doing this with these guys is super special for us. They’re like my brothers since I’ve spent every day with them for three years. Third baseman Pych got to play in all but eight of the 126 games that made up the title run.

“It was great to be with all of these kids every single day since we battled,” Pych said. “Just knowing how many times one pitch could have ended our season, both this year and in the years before. When you look at how many close games we were in and how we much we battled. In baseball, it’s one and done. We played defense and did our thing. It’s awesome.

“They had us on our heels, but Coach Smith talked to us after the fourth inning and said, ‘We’re tight right now, so let’s loosen up since we know what we have to do to win this game.’ There is so much love for each other on this team and we all had the passion and the determination. I’ll never forget this run, it was awesome.”

Shortstop Stulas got to play in 112 contests during the past three seasons.

“This is great, especially doing it with this group of kids and with

When the Celtics are termed goofy, what gets overlooked is what made them state champions again and again.

“These are great kids who are hard workers,” Smith said. “Tomorrow morning, I’ll be happy and sad.

Happy we won, but summer baseball starts, and I’ll look around and those guys won’t be here. It will be different not writing their names in the lineup.”

The championship game virtually had been decided. Providence led Mundelein, 10-3, with nobody out and a runner on second base in the top of the seventh inning. Right fielder Tom Kelley drifted back to catch a long fly

A normal right fielder would have conceded third base after the catch.

But not Kelley, whose arm conjures up memories of Bo Jackson, Roberto Clemente, Dave Parker and our own Jesse Barfield.

Kelley unleashed an incredible throw that landed in the glove of third baseman Pych on the fly, nailing the runner at third. The Providence crowd erupted. It was a fitting warmup for the final out, which came on a line drive to shortstop Stulas.

“That throw by Kelley was pretty good, wasn’t it?” Smith smiled. “For him to show off that arm on the biggest stage is amazing.”

But it was not just a stunning throw. It exemplified what has gone on in the Providence baseball program since the Celtics got the message two years ago to quit playing tight.

“That throw said something about our kids and trying to make every play until the game is over,” Smith said. “They won’t play any other

“Coach Smith has been awesome to us every single year that we’ve been on the team. Jimmy, Mikey and Zack are my best friends. And for Zack and Mikey to win the football title in their junior year makes it even better.

“They always say that anything can happen on any given day in baseball. But we found a way in every playoff game. Maybe we got lucky in some games, but in the end, it was the coaching staff and us listening to them. I’ll always remember these guys, it’s all about them. Coach Smith and all of the coaches and every single kid on the team. I’ll never forget them.”

And catcher Jeffries played in 105 games during the run of three championships.

“This is unheard of, obviously, since no one’s ever done it before,” Jeffries said. “But it wasn’t just me and my other three teammates, it was a whole team effort. The fact that we got it done when nobody thought we could but us, that’s crazy to go against all odds. Unbelievable.

“We have a bunch of junior college kids and a few Division I players but nothing huge like Mount Carmel and St. Rita. We just found a way to get it done. We had a huddle and Smitty said, ‘this is what we do.’ We were playing tense but then decided to have fun and everything came from there. This is the last time I’ll play with these guys, especially with Mikey, Jackson and Zack in my infield, I’m definitely going to miss them and this whole team.”

“I’m humbled and blessed to be here. All the credit goes to the players and to our great coaches. I let the coaches coach. They say the great coaches surround themselves with great people, and that’s what I have here.”

“These years have been amazing,” said senior Jackson Dvorak, who played for the last two state champion baseball teams and also the 2014 championship football team. “The whole road we took to win these games, it doesn’t get any better.

“It’s our mentality that we are going to win. Knowing we feel we are never going to lose got us where we are.”

Smith’s starting lineup against Mundelein was all seniors. The run has ended for so many special – though goofy – kids who won as a team. Still, what they accomplished, and how they did it, will not soon be forgotten.

We really try to not put teams that are in the same conference together in a pool if at all possible, but sometimes you can’t help it.

“One of the fun things about ours is that teams usually get to see teams they would never see otherwise.”

Like in past seasons, Morris won’t tip off until the afternoon session. This allows Carey to make sure things are running smoothly before she has to enter coaching mode. The start times of 2, 4 and 6 p.m. also allow for more Morris parents to be able to see their kids play.

During the morning session, though, the Morris players won’t just be sitting around and relaxing. Carey will have them busy working scoreboards and score tables, as well as concession stands.

“Most of our girls are at least twosport athletes and some of them are three,” Carey said. “The only two days of the summer that basketball owns them is during the shootout. That’s fine with me. I like them playing other sports, but for these two days, we need them to work as well as play.”

The roster will be a bit on the lean side, as Carey noted that the varsity consists of eight players – Jasmine Cook, Ashley Hood, Megan Jurak, Madi Mayberry, Amanda Schmidt, Mya Shannon, Meghan Smith and Paige Valentine.

of varsity competition, while most of the rest of the team got varsity time last year.

“It will be interesting to see how we adjust this year,” Carey said. “Mya and Meghan, we are really looking for them to grow into leadership roles. The others played a lot of varsity last year, so they should already be adjusted to the varsity game and it should be just picking up from where we left off last year.”

Carey also pointed out that the City of Morris deserves a bulk of the credit as the biggest sponsor, while they also get donations to the concession stand from Casey’s, Corleone’s and Turtle’s Tap and floor fans from Sun Belt Rental.

“And, along with the girls working, we have a lot of parent volunteers. We certainly couldn’t get by without them.

They are the backbone of the whole program.”

MORRIS – Just when they thought it was safe to put their basketball shoes away for a while, the Morris girls basketball team is going to lace up again Tuesday when the 20th edition of the Morris Ladies Shootout tips off at 8 a.m.

“These shootouts are becoming more and more prevalent,” Morris coach and tournament director Kate Carey said.

“But we still have a full field of 32.”

The event will follow the same format it has in years past, with eight, fourteam pools playing round-robin Tuesday. Results from Tuesday will dictate the bracket matchups for Wednesday’s action. Four games will start every hour between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. Tuesday, with the Morris main gym and the three courts in the fieldhouse all being used. The championship game will be played Wednesday at noon in the main gym.

Danta wins Late-Model event Auto Dealer STAFF REPORT

MORRIS – It’s becoming a regular occurrence.

In yet another exciting down-to-thewire finish, Anthony Danta edged contenders Eddie Hoffman Jr. and Tony Scapelli Jr. to win the Late Model 30-lap feature race at Grundy County Speedway last Friday night.

Danta, who started in the ninth position, actually fell back to 10th for a couple of laps early before surging from 10th to second on Lap 5. He stayed second behind John Nutley for two more laps before taking the lead for good on Lap 7. Hoffman, meanwhile, started 12th and moved up to sixth by the time one lap was complete and third after two. He took over second on Lap 10 and followed Danta the rest of the way.

In the end, Danta finished .150 seconds ahead of Hoffman and .777 ahead of third-place Scapelli, who had started 10th. Pole-sitter Dave Einhuas finished fourth, with Joe Vinachi, James Gregait, Brandon Clubb, Garrett Schwartz, Nathan Bertino and John Nutley rounding out the top 10.

The Mid-American 25-lap feature also featured some excitement, especially on the final lap. Pole-sitter John Ventrello led the first 24 laps, only to see Ron Vandermeier Jr. and Kevin Murphy overtake him on the 25th circuit. Vandermeier won the race, finishing .667 seconds ahead of Murphy and .782 ahead of Ventrello.

Matt Clemens also finished within a second (.968) of the leader in taking fourth. Cody Clubb, Kenny Benson, Jim Kachel, Kevin Gentile, Luke Baldwin and Jeff Wakeman rounded out the top 10.

In the Street Stock division’s 25lap feature, Tim Stewart went from starting third to the lead position in just two laps and ran in front the rest of the way to capture the checkered flag. John Senerchia was second, followed by Randy Weese, Mark Ross Jr., Christy Penrod, Rita Fields, Craig Matteson, Zac Sontag Jr., Rick Dawson and Cheryl Hryn.

In the 4-Cylinder division 15-lap feature, Tommy Gilmore was first when the checkered waved, but he was later disqualified for a rules infraction.

That gave the win to Dylan Marshall, followed by Nick Clubb, Kyle Royster, Bruce Leake, Michael Tobuch, Dan Schmissing, Scott Ingram, Jeff Law, Zach Orts and Tom Kaminski.

Racing continues Friday night at Grundy County Speedway. It is Hometown Hero night for Minooka and Channahon as spectators showing IDs with those communities as their town of residence will get in for half-price.

Pits open at 4 p.m., with practice starting at 5 p.m. The stands open at 5:30 and qualifying begins at 6:45 p.m., with the first race at 8 p.m. in the full Late-Model, Mid-American, Street Stock and 4-Cylinder program. Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, $5 for children ages 12-17 and free for kids 11-under.

Former Bears defensive lineman Bryan Robinson dead at age 41 MILWAUKEE – Former Bears defensive lineman Bryan Robinson has died, the team said Monday. He was 41.

Robinson was found at a Milwaukee motel Saturday night. An autopsy done Monday by the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office found no trauma, and the cause of death is pending results of toxicology tests. Robinson, of Gurnee, was pronounced dead at the Midpoint Motel about 10:15 p.m., the medical examiner’s office said in a statement.

Robinson played for the Bears from 1998 to 2003 and was an anchor on the defensive line for the 2001 NFC Central Division champion team. One of Robinson’s most memorable games for Bears fans was on Nov. 7, 1999, the first game the team played after the death of Hall of Fame running back Walter

Payton.

Robinson blocked a 28-yard field goal attempt by Green Bay’s Ryan Longwell as time expired to preserve a 14-13 victory at Lambeau Field and snap a 10-game losing streak to the Packers.

“I think Walter Payton actually picked me up a little bit and boosted me up in the air because I can’t jump that high,” Robinson said after the game. “Walter had a lot to do with it.

I know he did.”

Robinson joined the St. Louis Rams as an undrafted free agent from Fresno State in 1997. After the Bears, played for the Miami Dolphins in 2004, the Cincinnati Bengals from 2005-2007 and with the Arizona Cardinals from 2008-2010, a stint that included a trip to the Super Bowl.

Without diagrams to show, Gossage described how under three layers of asphalt there is porous concrete that acts as a drainage mat feeding a French drainage system all the way around the track. He said more drains have been added recently, and that existing ones were examined to make sure they were still fully functional.

High humidity was also an issue Saturday night when trying to dry the track, which still had very noticeable damp spots more than six hours after it had stopped raining.

“Man, it’s frustrating to us,” Gossage said. “But what can you do? You cannot beat Mother Nature.”

Gossage thought the track was ready late Sunday morning, but IndyCar officials later discovered an issue with water on the apron near where cars come off pit road to blend back on to the track.

Had they tried again Monday, there would have been more issues with the weather. There was heavy rain there early in the afternoon, about the same time as when the race likely would have been scheduled.

When IndyCar returns to Texas in August, the race will resume on lap 72 of 248 with James Hinchcliffe leading.

The series has seven races scheduled before then, and only two more after that to finish this season.

“It’s a little unique, but we do a lot of unique things here,” said Jay Frye, IndyCar’s president of competition and operations.

While it almost certainly will be hot in August, when the average temperature in that area is in the low 90s, there is also a pretty good chance the track will be dry – and without any significant changes.

FORT WORTH, Texas – Blame it on the rain. Or is it because of the aging asphalt at Texas Motor Speedway that drivers prefer?

Really, it’s both, and became a soggy issue for the third consecutive race weekend at the track over an eightmonth period.

The IndyCar Series race in Texas is now in what essentially is a 21/2-month rain delay, with the resumption scheduled Aug. 27.

“I think we’re going through a rough patch,” TMS president Eddie Gossage said. “We’re just being dealt a tough hand by nature.”

After several hours unsuccessfully trying to dry the 11/2-mile track, the IndyCar race was postponed late Saturday without the cars ever getting on to pit road. The race then started late Sunday and didn’t get enough laps completed to make it official before more rain came.

Two months ago, the start of the NASCAR Sprint Cup race there was delayed nearly two hours and ended after midnight. During the Chase for the Sprint Cup last November, drivers lost their two scheduled practice sessions the day before the race while officials tried to dry the track after overnight rain, though the Xfinity Series race was run later that day. The Cup race in April 2014 was postponed a day by rain.

When Gossage was asked whether there was anything the track could do with its drainage system, he started with, “Man, I’m just going to get myself in trouble,” before a nearly 4-minute answer that included a lecture-like description about the track’s surface that was last completely repaved 15 years ago.

“Racecar drivers like old asphalt, right? That’s what you always hear,” he said. “Well, old asphalt becomes old because it oxidizes, and because over time the fines and the smaller aggregate that makes up asphalt comes out. ... The result is you have a more porous asphalt.”

What that means is that there are more small spaces and holes for water to penetrate.

“An inch of rain, well, that upper level gets saturated,” Gossage said.

“And (water) holds it in there.”

WASHINGTON – Max Scherzer retired the first 16 batters he faced and threw seven innings of two-hit ball, striking out 11 in a pitching masterpiece that carried the Washington Nationals past the Cubs, 4-1, Monday night.

Scherzer’s bid for his third career no-hitter ended with one out in the sixth when Addison Russell hit a 3-2 pitch into the left-field seats. The only other batter to reach against Scherzer (8-4) was Anthony Rizzo, who doubled in the seventh.

Facing the team with the best record in the majors, Scherzer became the 26th pitcher in baseball history to have 40 games with at least 10 strikeouts. He has won three straight starts, allowing only three runs over 22 innings.

Father-daughter team work to improve care for Alzheimer’s patients IF YOU GO

ROMEOVILLE – Alzheimer’s: It’s a women’s issue.

So says Olivia Jordan, Miss USA 2015, who is using her platform to empower women to speak up and advocate. She will speak about the importance of empowering women to advocacy during her June 23 presentation at Senior Star at Weber Place in Romeoville.

“Alzheimer’s affects women more often than men for two reasons,” Jordan said. “Genetically, women have been diagnosed with it more.

And women live longer so they have a better likelihood of developing Alzheimer’s. Also, women are often caregivers for those diagnosed with it and many times have to quit their jobs and become full-time, stay-at-home caregivers for parents or spouses or other members of their family.”

Jordan said she first became aware of the need for empowerment and advocacy from her father, Bob Thomas.

He, along with his twin brother, Bill Thomas, is co-founder and co-owner of 14 Senior Star living communities in the United States.

According to a news release from Senior Star at Weber Place, Senior Star overall placed No. 3 nationally in fundraising for the 2015 Walk to End Alzheimer’s, raising more than $500,000 with only slightly more than 1,200 employees. Moreover, Bob placed No. 2 nationally in individual fundraising totals.

Why all the effort? For several reasons. Bob turns 65 this year and would like to spare his family the pain of watching him mentally deteriorate.

Plus, the company is driven to do good for others.

“Once we’re engaged, we’re going to make a difference and see it to the end,” Bob said.

Twenty years ago, Senior Star only offered independent living options for seniors, Bob said. But as various executive directors and other staff noticed the need for assisted living and memory care options, they were added, he said.

That need is not going away.

“In 2000, there were over 4 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease. That number is now about 5.4 million,” Bob said.

Much of that increase is due to an aging population because Alzheimer’s

If a person younger than 65 is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, it’s considered early onset, Bob said.

“Since the 85-year-old group is one of the fastest percentage-wise growing population, they are at increased risk,” Bob said. “By 85, you have an almost 30 percent chance of having Alzheimer’s.

It’s terrible.”

In addition to fundraising, he said he goes to Washington, D.C., at least three times a year to lobby. He said federal funding for Alzheimer’s’s research has been increased over the last three years and a bill is currently in the works to increase it again.

But lobbying is not the only way to advocate. Jordan said people can write letters and inform through social media and sharing their stories. Bob and Jordan both cited Hillary Clinton’s goal of curing Alzheimer’s by 2025.

“They need a safe place when they are no longer able to take care of themselves at home,” Stelter said.

The new memory care unit at Alden will cater to the unique needs of

people with dementia, Stelter said.

For example, trouble with depth perception and visual spatial issues often accompanies dementia. Contrasting color schemes and furniture choices helps patients safely navigate.

“They can tell where the chair is versus the floor versus the wall,” Stelter said.

Shadow boxes containing familiar items installed outside their doors help patients recognize their rooms.

Task boards in bedrooms allow loved ones and staff to write personalized prompts. The in-house TV displays the current time, day and date. Clocks don’t use abbreviations.

MAZON – While many kids set up lemonade stands to raise a little spending money, Gabby Clubb, 15, of Mazon, has a different reason.

Clubb has attended the Grundy County Relay for Life since she was 6 months old. That’s when Clubb’s mother, Ronette, was diagnosed with colon cancer. Ronette died at age 30, when Gabby was just 4 years old.

“It makes me feel like I’m helping to find a cure,” Gabby said.

Gabby and seven other young family members – this year ranging from 4 to 19 – have run a lemonade stand in the weeks before and after the American Cancer Society event to raise money for their family team: Scrubbing Out Cancer for Ronette. Gabby also helps run concessions at the Relay for Life event. This year, it was April 9 at Morris Community High School. The family also has worn clothing at Relay for

Thompson to attend workshop on stuttering MANHATTAN – Valerie Thompson of Manhattan was one of only 20 speech-language pathologists chosen to attend an intensive workshop on stuttering therapy.

Thompson, a speech-language pathologist and executive director of Speech Plus, is participating in “Using Cognitive Approaches to Working with People Who Stutter” from June 13 to June 17 in Boston, Massachusetts.

The event is co-sponsored by the Stuttering Foundation and Boston University. Attendees are already providing stuttering therapy from Rhode Island to Colorado, from Peru to Israel. The foundation estimates that more than 70 million stutter worldwide.

SHOREWOOD – This fall, to help meet the growing need of an aging population, a new memory care unit will open next door to Alden Estates of Shorewood.

Alden Courts in Shorewood will be a 50-bed memory care building that will include Medicare-covered skilled rehabilitation services. Alden Estates specializes in transitional care from hospital to home.

Services at Alden Courts will include physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language therapy, wound care, pain management, intravenous therapy, and post-acute rehabilitation for orthopedic, cardiac, pulmonary and neuro-stroke care.

“It’s a unique memory care model,” said Victoria Wolpoff, vice president of public relations for Alden.

Often when people with dementia require rehabilitation, they must go to a separate facility, Wolpoff said. The unfamiliar environment can cause confusion and agitation.

“It’s very different and doesn’t have the calming atmosphere,” she said.

Why the increased need for memory care units? Dr. Jennifer Stelter, director of clinical operations for Alden,

“Patients often forget the abbreviations for the day of the week or the months, so they’re spelled out for them,” Stelter said.

Thirty minutes before mealtime, calm music begins playing, another prompt. Citrus aromatherapy stimulates appetite. Dishes in red or orange allow patients to decipher the difference between the food and the dishes.

A person’s culture and religious beliefs are considered in food preparation as is skill level. As dementia progresses, the ability to use a fork and spoon wanes. With finger foods, patients can feed themselves, retaining their independence.

“We also try to steer away from food that may pose a problem, like trying to scoop little green peas onto a spoon,” Stelter said, “If they become frustrated, they may stop eating altogether.”

Programming, too, is carefully designed. For instance, a high-functioning person can play Bingo with standard cards – but he also might want to call out the numbers, thus giving him a purpose, Stelter said.

A lower-functioning patient may play with a board with fewer numbers and need help in locating the correct number, Stelter added.

Sensory stimulation is also available for adults not able to go outside.

By bringing sod inside the memory care unit, patients can smell the grass and take off their shoes to run their feet, as well as their hands, through it.

“This triggers memories of being outside,” Stelter said.

28 Scientists seek new approach to vaccines Dear Dr. K: I heard on TV about a possible new vaccine against HIV, Ebola and other terrible viruses. That sounds like very good news, or is it just hype?

Dear Reader: You might have heard about a new approach to creating vaccines. The approach is called “passive immunization with neutralizing antibodies.” It could revolutionize immunization against Ebola and other viruses, including HIV (the virus that causes AIDS) and influenza (flu) viruses.

To tell you what it is and why this new approach is exciting, I need to explain some basics first. In tomorrow’s column, I’ll explain neutralizing antibodies.

When we are infected by viruses (and other microbes), certain cells of our immune system catch a few of the viruses. These cells chop the microbes they’ve caught into little pieces. Then those cells display the pieces, called antigens, like little flags waving from their cell surface.

Some other types of immune system cells see those antigens and begin making antibodies against them. The antibodies attach to those antigens – and to any virus that contains those flags. When that happens, the antibodies disable the virus.

Traditional vaccines contain large amounts of antigens of a virus. When those antigens enter your body, the immune system dedicates certain immune cells to make antibodies against those antigens.

The antibodies are made whenever a virus with those antigens infects your body, because those immune cells have a “memory” of the antigens that recognizes them immediately.

So far, so good. But here’s the problem.

Some viruses frequently change the shape of certain antigens. The flu virus is a prime example. Often new strains of the flu virus, with new and different antigens, suddenly

This can lead to pandemics – when new flu viruses develop and suddenly sweep across the globe. For example, the pandemic of the H1N1 “swine” flu virus in 2009-10 swept over the entire world within a few months. That’s too fast for a conventional vaccine to be made in large quantities. I know from personal experience: I caught the H1N1 virus and became quite sick before a vaccine against it could be developed.

With Ebola, there’s a slightly different problem. There are several very different strains of the Ebola virus. Every now and then, for reasons we don’t understand, one of the strains of the virus starts an epidemic. Each of them is different enough from the others it hasn’t seemed possible to make a traditional vaccine that would cover all three.

So, scientists have long dreamed of a vaccine that: (1) would be effective against many different strains of a virus; and (2) could be made in large amounts and stored to be ready for when an epidemic suddenly explodes on the scene, hopefully nipping the epidemic in the bud. Passive immunization with neutralizing antibodies may prove to fulfill that dream, as I’ll describe tomorrow.

I am trying to teach them to do chores and help around the house, but all I get is attitude from them.

I try to explain I didn’t grow up with a dishwasher and I washed all the dishes by hand.

Well, now that we have a dishwasher, they don’t want to load or unload it either. I try not to spoil my kids, but I guess it’s too late. Sometimes I get so frustrated I just do the chores myself.

What am I doing wrong as a parent? My kids are either on their iPhone or iPad or Xbox. They have a better childhood than I ever had, but they don’t understand. It’s hurtful when their response is “You don’t understand anything” or “I can’t wait to get out of the house and get away from you.” This is very hurtful, and I guess I just needed to vent to someone other than my husband. In bridge, you sometimes cover the known card -- the one led -- and sometimes leave it uncovered. How can the defenders defeat two hearts in today’s deal after West leads the club three?

When South rebid two diamonds (rather than one no-trump with two low clubs), North was right to give preference to hearts. He had a minimum, so couldn’t bid above two spades. Also, he knew his side had at least seven hearts, but was sure of only six diamonds. South, with a minimum opening and no great fit, had an easy pass. (In a class once, half the Souths jumped to four hearts because, or so they thought, I never let them play in a partscore contract!)

The defenders should set their sights on these six tricks: two clubs, two spades and two hearts. East wins with his club ace and returns the two (low from three remaining cards).

West takes that trick, cashes the spade ace, and continues with the spade eight (higher of two remaining cards). East wins and returns his last spade. Let’s assume declarer discards a diamond from his hand.

Now South leads the heart 10 from the board. To defeat the contract, East must cover with his king.

As we learned yesterday, you cover the last of touching honors. (As there is only one honor, that makes it the last.) South wins the king with his ace, but West gets two trump tricks with his queen-nine over declarer’s jack-eight.
