JOLIET – Lori and Matt O’Hagan of Frankfort, along with their two daughters, Abby and Emma, joined hundreds of runners and walkers Saturday morning for a family 5K – and this race nurtured their giving spirit.

“This is our first year doing this run.

It’s a great cause and the girls have done a lot of giving to local food pantries; it’s a good way to give back,” Lori said.

Matt added that instead of gifts for birthdays, his daughters ask that donations be made to the local food pantries or a charity of their choice.

“They need it more than we do,” Emma said.

More than 400 runners and walkers took to the track Saturday at the Chicagoland Speedway for the Northern Illinois Food Bank’s Foodie 5K in Joliet. The race was the third in a series, behind an April 9 event in Wheaton and a May 14 event in Libertyville. Runners paid to participate, and were encouraged to raise funds for the food bank.

Jennifer Nau, director of communications for the Northern Illinois Food Bank, said this was the second time the race has been in Joliet, but the series began three years ago in Wheaton, and additions have been made.

As of Sunday, the event’s fundraising website showed $6,289 in donations from the Joliet race, with final numbers to be tallied later in the week.

The top three fundraising teams were United Methodist Church of New Lenox, Fast Foodies and Grus Americana.

Nau said what makes the Joliet 5K unique out of the series is the venue.

“This run took place down the raceway, not a lot of people get the chance to get their feet on the ground on the raceway. They run on the apron of the track and finish in pit row, which was different than running through a neighborhood or town,” she said.

Northern Illinois Food Bank helps 13 counties and has centers across its service area, including an office in Joliet.

Nau said in Will County alone, the food bank supports 54 food pantries, six soup kitchens, 31 backpack school initiatives, 46 youth programs, two group homes, one senior program and two day cares.

Orlando club scene another night of drinking, dancing until shots began The ASSOCIATED PRESS ORLANDO, Fla. – Like young people in clubs the world over, Jon Alamo met up with some friends, and then some more friends.

He danced in Pulse’s main room, where people swayed to the beat of salsa music.

Then Alamo drifted into the club’s two other rooms, which grooved to more of a hip-hop vibe. He remembers hearing Rihanna’s “Work,” one of his favorite songs, and grinding to it on the dance floor.

It was supposed to be just a night of dancing and drinking, of looking good and gleefully partying into the early morning hours.

It was Latin night at Pulse, one of Orlando’s top gay venues, and two drag performers were scheduled to perform, one of them a big draw for

appearing on a season of the TV show “RuPaul’s Drag Race.”

“I was in the zone,” Alamo recalled.

“I wasn’t even paying attention – just dancing.”

The 22-year-old clothing store sales clerk had arrived at the club at 10:30 p.m. Saturday, clad all in blue from his button-down shirt adorned with palm trees to his loafers.

About three and a half hours later, the gunshots began and the first of at least 50 people began to die. At least 53 more were injured, many of them critically.

Residents of the Delaney Court condos next door to Pulse first heard the shooting about 2:03 a.m. Marlon Massey was watching the movie “Creed” when he heard, “pop, pop, pop!” He checked his phone for the time: The shots went on until 2:05 a.m.

working at the club off-duty had heard gunshots himself and spotted Omar Mateen outside the club. He fired his gun at the 29-year-old security guard from Fort Pierce, Florida, and two other officers quickly joined in. Mateen was not armed lightly: Police said he had an AR-15 assault-type rifle, a handgun and an explosive device.

Undeterred, he re-entered the club.

Inside, those on the dance floor weren’t sure if what they heard was just part of the DJ’s set.

“Everyone was getting on the floor. ... I thought it was just part of the music, until I saw fire coming out of his gun,” patron Rose Feba explained to the Orlando Sentinel.

Mina Justice was sound asleep when she received the first text from her son, Eddie Justice, who was in the club.

“Mommy I love you,” the first mes-

sage said. It was 2:06 a.m.

“In club they shooting.”

It was around this time that Alamo wandered back into the main room.

“He was holding a big weapon,” Alamo said. “He had a white shirt and he was holding the weapon. ... You ever seen how Marine guys hold big weapons, shooting from left to right? That’s how he was shooting at people.”

Alamo dashed toward the back of one of the smaller dance rooms; and said people then rushed to an area where two bouncers had knocked down a wooden fence to create an escape route.

“My first thought was, ‘Oh my God, I’m going to die,’ ” Alamo said, his voice very quiet. “I was praying to God that I would live to see another day. I couldn’t believe this was happening.”

Joliet city departments getting outside review

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet Fire Department will undergo an operations analysis, and is the latest of three city departments to get an outside review.

The Joliet City Council last week hired Fitch and Associates for $44,000 to do the study that will include a look at staffing, deployment and other facets of operation, including which fire stations are handling the most calls.

City Manager Jim Hock last year proposed closing a fire station to balance the city budget. That did not happen, and Hock said the new study is not aimed at closing a fire station.

But it is intended to look at efficiency.

“In this day and age of limited funding, we want to make sure we get the biggest bang for our buck in services,” Hock said.

Similar reviews are being done of the police and utilities departments.

The analysis of the utilities department was initiated last year after the City Council balked at a request from the utilities director for hikes in water and sewer rates. Council members said they wanted the efficiency study first.

Grundy coroner: Morris man dies of possible heroin overdose SHAW MEDIA MORRIS – A Morris man was found dead – possibly from overdosing on heroin – in his home early Sunday morning.

A news release from the Grundy County Coroner’s Office stated that it appears Ricardo Melendez, 24, died in the very late hours of Saturday evening and was discovered by his mother early Sunday morning in the apartment they shared in the 300 block of Ashland Circle.

Senior Associate Steve Knight last week told the council of several projects in process now, ranging from Dallas, Texas, to Burnsville, Minnesota.

The Joliet project will take six to eight months, he said.

“We like to spend a lot of time with our clients to make sure we have a robust understanding of your community,” Knight told the council.

He said the study is designed to take out “a lot of the guessing and subjectivity” that sometimes goes into deployment of services.

Mayor Bob O’Dekirk said the city continues to look at staffing and services in the aftermath of budget cuts that came during the recession.

“We’ve lost employees, and we’ve had to restructure services,” O’Dekirk said. “We want to take a fresh look at the departments to see that we are operating as efficiently as possible.”

Outside eyes will be helpful, he said.

“I think it’s responsible to the taxpayers,” O’Dekirk said. “Every department wants as many people and resources as possible. It’s a balancing act.”

Boil order from village is lifted in Minooka SHAW MEDIA MINOOKA – A boil order issued Friday by the village of Minooka is no longer in effect.

The end of the boil order was announced in a village news release Sunday evening that stated sample testing had confirmed the water supply was safe.

The village had urged residents to boil their water after E. coli and total coliform bacteria were found in the

supply.

“We are pleased to report that the problem has been corrected and that it is no longer necessary to be under a water boil order,” the news release stated.

Superintendent of Public Works Ryan Anderson clarified that no additional precautionary steps need to be taken by residents.

Early in the morning on Nov. 18, 1967, a reinforced battalion of 1,500 Viet Cong descended upon the GIs. Davis was sure he wouldn’t get out alive.

Despite being hit by a beehive round and sustaining 30 wounds between mid-thigh and his fourth vertebrae, Davis continued packing and shooting the company’s howitzer cannon until he heard the voice of an American GI coming from across the river.

Weak from his injuries he made it across the water using a blow-up mattress to float; it took him 45 minutes.

He made two trips through the

dark of night, still under attack, to save three of his brothers. In all, 12 of the 42 men survived.

“I didn’t do anything heroic, I did my job,” he said. “There should have been 42 Medals of Honor because if anyone of us hadn’t done their job, there would be none of us alive.”

Everything in the movie that pertains to the military is fact, but that’s where Gump’s life differs from Davis’.

“The only similarities are between Jenny [Gump’s beloved] and Dixie [Davis’ wife]. I love Dixie as much as Forrest Gump loved Jenny,” he said.

Davis’ book is about his life growing up, his tour of Vietnam, how he earned the Medal of Honor and losing his first wife, Peggy Davis, to cancer.

But it’s also about dealing with whatever life throws your way and never giving up.

“I hope it’s an inspiration for people who have gone through anything in their lives,” Davis said. “It’s about how to go on living.”

“I have known him since I was a little guy,” Good said.

Good also is a veteran, having served 22 years in the Army. As a Blackhawk helicopter pilot, he flew in Korea, Afghanistan, Kuwait and the U.S. It was Davis who encouraged Good to join the military after graduating from high school, though he didn’t enlist for another three years.

Davis travels around and speaks about his life and his book.

Over 2 million schoolchildren have held his Medal of Honor, he said. He hopes he has made a difference in their lives.

He reminds them that the reason Forrest Gump is portrayed as mentally slow is to show that you can’t lose if you keep trying.

The man known as “The Real Forrest Gump” made a recent appearance in Will County.

Sammy L. Davis was the actual recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor who was shown in the 1994 movie “Forrest Gump,” overlaid with Tom Hanks’ face as Gump.

Through the use of special effects, Gump is shown with many famous people throughout the movie – on “The Dick Cavett Show” with John Lennon, meeting John F. Kennedy and watching Alabama Gov. George Wallace during his “stand in the schoolhouse door” at the University of Alabama.

At a June 7 fundraiser at the New Lenox VFW for Gary Good, Shorewood resident and candidate for Will County auditor, Davis – a cousin of Good’s – was in attendance signing his book, “You Don’t Lose ‘Til You Quit Trying.”

Davis was a private first class when he served in Vietnam as an artilleryman. He and 41 of his com-

Peter Ferro overcame ‘bumps in the road’

JOLIET – Peter Ferro of Minooka likened his father – also Peter Ferro, but of Joliet – to the Energizer Bunny.

He never let challenges or difficulties stop him – ever.

“He was always saying, ‘It’s just another bump in the road,’ ” Ferro said.

The co-owner of P.T. Ferro Construction, the elder Peter felt many of those bumps. After his mother died, his father asked his aunt to come to the United States, marry him and help raise his three children, Ferro said.

Both Peter’s parents were immigrants.

Then after Peter’s father died when Peter was in his early teens, Peter ran newspaper routes seven days a week before serving in the U.S. Army. In 1952, while working for Powers-Thompson Construction Co., Ferro said Peter fell more than 43 feet and nearly died.

“He went through three years of being in and out of the hospital,” Ferro said.

During his recovery, Peter received $25 a month from Stone City VFW Post 2199 in Joliet and returned the favor

with longtime support, Ferro said.

When Peter recovered enough to work, he returned to Powers-Thompson – on crutches, as timekeeper. Again, Peter was thankful.

Ferro said his father epitomized the “hardworking work ethic” of the generation that came through the Great Depression and World War II. “They didn’t ask for anything,” Ferro said. “They went out and they worked. And they worked and they worked. They gave you nine hours for eight hours’ pay. You took responsibility for your actions and went out and improved yourself.”

Through the years, Peter experienced more bumps: additional knee injuries, a 16-hour surgery to remove a large growth from his back, quadruple bypass surgery and then a second heart surgery three hours later when something “sprang a leak.”

Still, Peter didn’t give up. He kept going.

“Nothing ever stopped him,” Ferro said.

Peter also supported the Church of St. Anthony in downtown Joliet, Ferro said. Yet when Peter married Ruby –

alley next to St. Anthony,” Ferro said.

When Powers-Thompson closed, Peter and his brother, Tony, started the construction company, which has employed thousands of people through the years. Ferro himself retired 20 years ago. His brother, Jim Ferro, of Minooka, retired last year. Another brother, John Ferro, of Manhattan, now runs the company.

P.T. Ferro Construction was one of the first area companies to begin profit sharing, which Peter initiated in the late 1960s or early 1970s, Ferro said. In later years, Peter also hosted an annual party at Al’s Steak House in Joliet for other retired employees.

Peter believed in showing appreciation to his people.

Former GOP senator and Ohio Gov. George Voinovich dies

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Former Republican U.S. Sen. George Voinovich, a two-term Ohio governor who preached frugality in his personal and public life and occasionally bucked the GOP establishment, died Sunday.

He was 79.

Voinovich, considered a moderate who opposed the size of former President George W. Bush’s tax cuts and later questioned Bush’s war strategy

in Iraq, died peacefully in his sleep, his wife Janet confirmed. His death came as a surprise to friends, who said he seemed strong despite some recent health struggles.

He had delivered public remarks Friday at a 25th Slovenian Independence Day event at Cleveland City Hall. He was a delegate to the Republican National Convention coming to Cleveland next month.

Bush’s father, former President George H.W. Bush, said Sunday that Voinovich was one of his closest polit-

ical allies and a “quintessential public servant,” who “brought people together, focused on results, and left his state and our country a better place.”

During his 12 years in the Senate, Voinovich occasionally found himself at odds with Republican conservatives. He was an early supporter of a proposed federal bailout for the auto industry, which employs thousands of people in Ohio, and he was the rare Republican during the Bush administration to suggest raising taxes to pay for the war in Iraq and hurricane relief.

Voinovich announced in early 2009 that he would not run for a third Senate term. He said he wanted to retire to spend more time with his family.

Cuyahoga County Executive Armond Budish said Voinovich had continued in recent years to advocate projects that made life better for people in northeast Ohio.

His integrity and toughness were common themes in condolences that poured in from Republicans and Democrats at the local, state and federal levels.

Ex-Gov. Quinn petitions for mayor term limits

CHICAGO – Former Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn, nodding to his petition-passing days, kicked off a signature drive Sunday to impose a two-term limit on Chicago’s mayor and create a citywide elected consumer advocate position.

The binding referendums could be on ballots as early as November or in the 2018 cycle, meaning there’s potential to make Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel ineligible to seek a third term in 2019.

Quinn insisted his effort wasn’t aimed at any individual, and getting nearly 53,000 valid signatures before an Aug. 8 deadline for November’s ballot would be challenging.

He explained how he got his start in petition drives – including laying the groundwork for the Citizens Utility Board – and wanted to give residents a way to bypass the mayor and City Council.

Enlisted sailors museum proposed in N. Chicago

GREAT LAKES – North Chicago could soon be home to the country’s first museum dedicated to enlisted sailors.

The National Museum of the American Sailor Foundation is launching a $40 million fundraising campaign for a museum near Naval Station Great Lakes.

Ron Lanz, executive director for the foundation, said there are 10 other museums in the U.S. Navy system, but none of them are dedicated to the enlisted sailor, a category that represents 271,000 sailors out of 400,000. He said the National Museum of the American Sailor would be the only museum dedicated to sailors who have recently enrolled in the Navy.

Brand White and his cousin were on the dance floor in the main room when White’s cousin yelled to him, “B, it’s a guy with a bomb!” Before he knew it, White was hit in the shoulder.

“All of a sudden it just started like a rolling thunder, loud and everything went black,” White wrote in a Facebook message to an Associated Press reporter from his hospital room Sunday. “I think I was trampled.”

He didn’t recall leaving the club, but he remembered the state he was in: “Covered head to toe in blood.”

“I remember screaming and mass chaos,” he wrote. “There were hundreds of people there.”

He made it to the hospital, where he got a blood transfusion. As Sunday wore on, his cousin remained missing.

were dancing in the main room when they heard the crack of gunfire. “About 70 bullets,” Rigas described in a terse Facebook message.

He was shot in the arm, and a man next to him was struck in the leg before police entered the room.

“I was behind the bar with four other people under the well. They called out to us and had us run out,” he said.

Rigas saw dead bodies as he barreled out of the club. In the rush to escape, he became separated from his partner, who remained unaccounted for.

Three patrons, including a performer, ran to the nearby home of club regular David “Brock” Cornelius.

Cornelius had gone to a different bar Saturday night and wasn’t yet home, but he texted them his garage code and they hid in his house.

Police said a dozen or so other patrons took cover in a restroom.

At 2:39 a.m., Eddie Justice texted his mother from the bathroom, pleading for her to call police: “Call them mommy Now.”

“He’s coming I’m gonna die.”

Justice asked her son if anyone was hurt and which bathroom he was in.

“Lots. Yes,” he responded at 2:42 a.m.

The last text she received from Eddie was at 2:50 a.m. She still hasn’t heard from her son.

“All I heard was gunfire after gunfire,” Brandon Wolf, who was in a restroom hiding, told the Sentinel.

“Eventually, I thought you were supposed to run out of ammunition. But it just kept going and going,” he said.

What happened in the three hours after the shooting broke out and the gunman was killed was not immediately clear.

As people lay dying in the club, the shooting developed “into a hostage situation,” Orlando Police Chief John Mina said.

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer said that officers initially mistakenly thought the gunman had strapped explosives to some of his victims after a bomb robot sent back images of a battery part next to a body. That held

paramedics up from entering the club until it was determined the part had fallen out of an exit sign or smoke detector, the mayor said.

The robot was sent in after SWAT team members used explosive charges and an armored vehicle to knock down a wall in an effort to access the club.

About 5 a.m., a decision was made to rescue the remaining club-goers, who authorities said likely were in one of the smaller dance rooms, the Adonis Room.

Law enforcement officers used two explosive devices to try to distract the killer, and then 11 officers stormed the club and exchanged gunfire with Mateen.

The explosives jolted some Pulse neighbors awake, including Dorian Ackerman, 28, who noted that it was just after 5 a.m.

“I heard a woman screaming,” he said. “It was really terrifying.”

The gunman started firing, hitting an officer who was saved by protective armor.

“That’s when we took him down,” Dyer said.

Massacre spurs grief, fear for LGBT Americans

NEW YORK – The gay, lesbian and transgender community has seen violence before, from Harvey Milk to Matthew Shepard, and an ever-lengthening list of transgender women.

But never anything like this.

Sunday’s massacre at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, grimly changed the equation, stirring communal fears and swiftly prompting tighter security at gay pride events.

The gunman, identified as Omar Mateen of Fort Pierce, Florida, told his father he had been disturbed by seeing two men kissing in Miami.

The attack on the Pulse nightclub, which killed at least 50 people and was the deadliest U.S. mass shooting to date, occurred amid numerous events nationwide celebrating LGBT Pride Month.

In several other cities hosting events on Sunday – including block parties in Boston and a festival in Washington – authorities beefed up the police presence.

This “is a tragic illustration of the legitimate safety fears that those in our LGBT community live with every day,” said Mike Rawlings, the mayor of Dallas, where extra police were assigned to a neighborhood that is a hub of the local gay community.

Twenty-year-old James Wesley, of Indiana, had assault rifles, ammunition and chemicals that could be used to make an explosive, according to police, who said there was no evidence of

a connection to the Orlando massacre.

Before Sunday, the most prominent incidents of violence against gays claimed one life at a time.

The highest profile of these included the murder of Milk, a pioneering gay politician in San Francisco in 1978, and the 1998 murder of Shepard, a gay college student in Wyoming at the hands of two men who beat him

into a coma while he was tied to a fence. A federal hate crimes law bears Shepard’s name.

Investigators still were trying to determine Mateen’s motives. He pledged allegiance to the Islamic State in a 911 call before the shooting, according to a law enforcement official familiar with the investigation who was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

But LGBT activists had no doubt that their community was the intended target.

“Our practices and institutions may change in light of this tragedy – LGBT gathering places may have more security now,” said Rev. Alisan Rowland, pastor of the LGBT-welcoming Metropolitan Community Church of New Orleans. “But we will never, ever go away. We will never be cowed.”

Rachel B. Tiven, CEO of the LGBTrights group Lambda Legal, said the continued vilification of LGBT people by their detractors, and the continued resistance to expansion of their civil rights, was “an invitation to violence.”

“When people are targeted by others who are scared of difference, they’re not safe when they go dancing, they’re not safe when they go out to pray,” she said. “If we live in culture where fear of difference is encouraged, that can, in the hands of crazy people, have dreadful consequences.”

Obama decries Orlando shooting as an ‘act of terror’

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama decried the deadliest mass shooting in American history on Sunday as a terrorist act targeting a place of “solidarity and empowerment” for gays and lesbians.

He urged Americans to decide “if that’s the kind of country we want to be.”

Hours after a gunman killed at least 50 people in Orlando, Obama said the FBI would investigate the nightclub shooting as terrorism, but said the alleged shooter’s motivations were unclear. He said the U.S. “must spare no effort” to determine whether the suspect, identified by authorities as Omar Mateen, had any ties to extremist groups.

“What is clear is he was a person filled with hatred,” Obama said of the alleged shooter. He added: “We know enough to say that this was an act of terror and an act of hate. And as Americans, we are united in grief, in outrage,

and in resolve to defend our people.”

Obama had planned to travel to Wisconsin on Wednesday for his first campaign appearance of the 2016 race, a joint rally with Hillary Clinton in Green Bay, Wisconsin. But Clinton’s campaign and the White House said that event was being postponed in light of the attack.

The president, who has proclaimed June as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month, called the attack “heartbreaking” for the LGBT community. He said the site of the shooting was more than a nightclub because it was a place where people came “to raise awareness, to speak their minds and to advocate for their civil rights.”

“The shooter targeted a night club where people came together to be with friends to dance and to sing – to live,” Obama said.

For Obama, the hastily arranged remarks were the latest in what’s become a tragically familiar routine. Since he took office in 2009, Obama has appeared before cameras more than a dozen times following mass shootings and issued

written statements after many others.

The president made no new, specific call for stricter gun laws. Though he lamented “how easy it is” for people to get their hands on weapons, Obama appeared resigned to the likelihood that he’ll be unable as president to substantially address the mass shootings that have proliferated in recent years.

“We have to decide if that’s the

kind of country we want to be,” Obama said. “To actively do nothing is a decision as well.”

After a gunman in Newtown killed 20 first graders and six adults in 2012, Obama dedicated much of the start of his second term to pushing legislation to expand background checks, ban certain assault-style weapons and cap the size of ammunition clips.

Providence continues celebration at home

Shaw Media Correspondent NEW LENOX – In the 76-year history of the IHSA’s state baseball tournament series, only four schools have won consecutive state baseball championships – Maine Township (1957-58), Stanford Olympia (2008-09), Teutopolis (2010-11) and Providence Catholic (2014-15).

On Saturday night, 3,981 fans jammed into Silver Cross Field to witness history in the making at the Class 4A state title game as Providence faced Mundelein.

Playing in its first state championship, the Mustangs scored three times to take a 3-0 lead. As they have on numerous occasions during their amazing three-year run, the Celtics rallied past the Mustangs for a 10-3 victory.

Providence coach Mark Smith and his Celtics thus became the first school to win three consecutive state baseball championships.

Having made history, the Celtics headed home to New Lenox late Saturday night. With about a couple hundred family members, friends and members of Celtic Nation, they converged on their school. Sacred Heart Gymnasium’s floor renovation ended any possibility for the gymnasium hosting the rally. The sweltering June night temperatures took Bishop Kafer Stadium out of the equation. Athletic director Doug Ternik opted for the air-conditioned comfort of the school cafeteria for the late-night rally.

The Rev. Richard McGrath, the Providence principal, kicked off the rally.

“We are here to honor our historic three consecutive state championships baseball team tonight,” he said. “An outstanding accomplishment and just another example of the greatness of our school.

“Credit goes to all the hard-working people who every day make Providence Catholic High School great. We are also blessed to have the best high school baseball coach in the state, Mark Smith.”

Up next was Smith, who became the first coach in history to win three consecutive baseball state championships.

He pulls into a tie with Al Carstens of Maine Township and Maine West with three state baseball championships. Carstens won the two consecutive at Maine Township in 1957 and 1958 and won another at Maine West in 1963, in the old single-class system.

“I want to thank the administration and everyone here at Providence Catholic High School,” Smith said. “I want to thank my outstanding staff, who without them our historic accom-

plishment would not have been possible. Celtic Nation, you were awesome all night at Silver Cross. And last but not least, I want to thank my boys for all their hard work and sacrifices. Hey, we’re state champs, again!”

Led by the outstanding efforts from Ternik, athletic assistant Sandy Arthurs and her army of support, cold drinks, pizza and delicious bakery goods were served to all. After devouring their pizza, the Celtics all rose in unison and yelled, “time to jump in the pool.” They all ran in the direction, of a small, above-ground swimming pool on campus, behind Bishop Kafer Stadium.

As they have played together for three historic seasons, they all jumped into the small pool.

“We didn’t do this in ‘14, but we started this tradition last year after winning our second state championship,” senior catcher Jim Jeffries said. “It was required that after winning any state baseball championship, we all run down here and jump in the pool,” After playing in steamy conditions for nearly two and a half hours at Silver Cross, it was a refreshing splash for the history-making Celtics.

Seniors Brendan O’Hara, Zach Pych, Jackson Stulas, Jeffries, Kevin Fitzger-

ald and numerous others all echoed the same response. Coming to Providence Catholic High School was the greatest decision of their young lives. The family closeness and the work-ethic philosophy was the underlying reason for their historic success.

“Going to Providence not only taught us how to be successful in athletics, but gave us direction on how to be successful in life,” senior Jackson Dvorak said.

After having some time to digest what his boys had just accomplished, Smith added some closing thoughts.

“We started the season with the goal, ‘For three,’ “ Smith said. “We aren’t the most talented team, but nobody has the winning mentality that we possess. The kids were unbelievable, accomplishing what they did over our unbelievable run. The amazing number of comefrom-behind wins. They just would never quit. They were truly amazing.

“People said we weren’t worthy of our first championship in 2014. Last year they said the same thing, even though we continued to beat the best teams in the state. This year everybody wanted to put an end to our run into the history books. One can’t imagine the pressure our kids were under. With this historic state championship, I would hope that everyone finally realizes that Providence Catholic is truly the best baseball team in the state.”

The announced crowd for Saturday night’s Class 4A state baseball championship game at Silver Cross Field was 3,981.

It would have been 3,982, without a doubt.

I was in North Carolina recently for a wedding and vacation, returning home just in time for the state tournament. Among my tasks was running through the editions of the Herald-News that I had missed.

In the obituaries, there was Bob Schaper, 59, of New Lenox, who died unexpectedly May 30. I couldn’t believe it.

Anyone who knew Schaper knows he would have been at Silver Cross Field to back Providence at the state tournament. He was unsurpassed as a supporter of youth and high school sports in New Lenox. His dad, the late Ron Schaper, a member of the Joliet Area Sports Hall of Fame who passed away in 2010, began the New Lenox Mustangs football program and headed it up seemingly forever. Bob was his right-hand man for most of those years and took over the operation of the program after his dad’s death.

New Lenox Lightning softball, New Lenox Wolfpac basketball, Providence baseball and Lincoln-Way Central softball all were on Bob Schaper’s remarkable resume for varying amounts of time. He cared about the kids he coached in their younger years, and he continued to care about them.

Whenever I covered a Providence, Lincoln-Way Central or Lincoln-Way West football, baseball or softball game, I looked forward to seeing Schaper and chatting with him on the sidelines or behind the backstop. It will be different next school year. Imagine how much the entire New Lenox sports community will miss him.

Schaper had to be looking down and smiling Saturday night when Providence put the finishing touches on its historic 3-peat with a 10-3 victory over Mundelein in the Class 4A championship game. The Celtics trailed, 3-1, in the fifth inning, but these kids are special, a different breed. They never met a deficit they did not feel they could overcome.

Our area also had another state champion earlier Saturday in Lemont, which blanked Springfield, 10-0, in six innings to win the 3A title behind senior right-hander Garrett Acton.

While the Providence family was missing Schaper, Acton lost his father, Gordon, his No. 1 supporter, last Oc-

tober. Gordon died in his sleep at age 51. As with Schaper, he was much too young.

Gordon Acton was a three-sport standout during his high school career at Bolngbrook. He played football for his dad, Phil, and continued his football career at Eastern Illinois and Purdue.

He was the general manager at Highland Park Country Club until his death.

Garrett Acton went out Saturday and completed Lemont’s second state championship in three years with a three-hitter. He said after the game he definitely will continue his baseball career at NCAA Division I Saint Louis University.

The White Sox knew that, but they still selected Acton in the 35th round of the draft that concluded Saturday. In a story on mlb.com, White Sox director of amateur scouting Nick Hostetler had this to stay about drafting Acton: “He’ll be a kid that will go to school.

We just wanted to draft him, with a little bit of notoriety for a young man who had to deal with a lot of adversity in his life.

“To show the resilience to come back and win the state championship, his family and his friends are proud of him, and I know we are. It was an honor for us to get to take him.”

That is quite a tribute. It sounds as if the Sox would be thrilled to have a chance to draft Acton again a few years down the road.

Three other area players were selected in this draft – catcher Sam Tidaback (Providence), a senior at NCAA Division II North Georgia; shortstop Branden Boggetto (Providence), a senior at Southeast Missouri State, and right-handed pitcher Sean Renzi (Plainfield North), a senior at Central Michigan.

Tidaback, who played two years at Ball State before transferring to North Georgia, went in the 21st round to the Cubs, Boggetto in the 25th round to the Washington Nationals and Renzi in the 32nd round to the White Sox. All three likely will sign and leave soon for their teams’ minor league camps before beginning short seasons later this month in Rookie or A ball. Tidaback, a Plainfield native who prides himself on defense, hit .341 with 11 homers and 57 RBIs this season. He had a .417 on-base percentage and .569 slugging mark.

Joliet native Boggetto was a firstteam All-Ohio Valley pick as a senior.

He hit .318 and was 16th nationally with 23 doubles. He also clubbed a team-high 13 homers and led his team with 61 RBIs, ranking 26th in the nation.

The Associated Press CHICAGO – Yordano Ventura pitched seven sharp innings for Kansas City in his first start since he brawled with Manny Machado in Baltimore, and the Royals beat the White Sox, 3-1, on Sunday for their second straight win following an eight-game losing streak.

Ventura (5-4) struck out a season-high 10 and walked one in his first win since May 17 against Boston, making the most of Kansas City’s run-scoring singles in the first and second. Salvador Perez added a leadoff homer down the left-field line in the ninth.

The 25-year-old Ventura had been 0-2 with a 6.17 ERA in his previous four starts. The right-hander was suspended for nine games by Major League Baseball after he hit Machado in the back with a 99 mph fastball in the fifth inning of a 9-1 loss Tuesday, leading to a benches-clearing fight.

But he appealed the punishment and is allowed to pitch until the process is complete.

The Sox put runners on first and third with no out in the fifth, but J.B. Shuck struck out looking and Ventura got rookie Tim Anderson to bounce into a double play – one of three on the day for the Sox. After Jose Abreu homered in the sixth, Ventura struck out Melky Cabrera and Todd Frazier to end the inning.

Kelvin Herrera worked the eighth and Wade Davis finished for his 17th save in 18 chances, helping manager Ned Yost improve to 500-499 in seven

years with Kansas City.

The Sox lost for the 14th time in their last 18 games – five of those defeats against Kansas City.

Carlos Rodon (2-6) shook off a slow start and pitched six effective innings for the Sox after he was pushed back a couple days due to a sore neck. The left-hander allowed seven hits, struck out seven and walked two.

Kendrys Morales’ two-out RBI single got Kansas City on the board in the first, and Whit Merrifield added another run-scoring single in the second.

OLD FRIENDS

Sox right-hander James Shields visited the Royals before the game and chatted with Yost. Shields won 27 games in two seasons in Kansas City, helping the Royals reach the 2014 World Series. He signed with San Diego in February 2015 and was traded to the Sox on June 4.

“He left a big impact here. It’s good to see him,” Yost said. “I’m glad he’s back in the American League.”

Shields lasted just two-plus innings in an 11-4 loss to Washington in his Sox debut on Wednesday. He pitches again on Monday against Detroit.

ATLANTA – Jon Lester earned his fourth-straight victory after allowing no earned runs in seven innings as the Cubs beat the Atlanta Braves, 13-2, on Sunday to win their final series at Turner Field.

Lester (8-3) has allowed only one earned run with no walks in three wins this month, lowering his ERA to 1.89.

He gave up five hits to the Braves, his high mark of the month, with seven strikeouts.

The Cubs outscored Atlanta, 21-4, in winning the final two games of the three-game series.

Javier Baez hit a three-run homer off Chris Withrow to cap the Cubs’ sixrun eighth inning.

Anthony Rizzo drove in three runs with three hits. David Ross had two hits and also drove in two runs, one on a base-loaded walk from Alexi Ogando in Chicago’s three-run seventh.

Jason Heyward, who began his career with the Braves, had three hits, two walks and scored three runs.

The Cubs (43-18) have won 14 of 18 and improved to 39-2 when scoring at least four runs. They matched their season high with four errors. The first

of two throwing errors by Ross, on a double-steal by Freddie Freeman and Chase d’Arnaud, allowed d’Arnaud to score Atlanta’s only run in the first inning.

The Braves (18-44) began the day tied with Minnesota for the majors’ worst record. They are 7-25 at home.

Braves rookie right-hander John Gant (0-1), making his first start after seven relief appearances, allowed three runs, two earned, in 41/3 innings. Gant gave up four hits with four walks.

Withrow gave up six runs while recording only one out.

UNUSUAL SLIDE RULE CALL

A review determined Ross violated the slide rule – even when he didn’t slide into second base. Ross hit a grounder to first baseman Freddie Freeman, who threw to shortstop Erick Aybar in the sixth inning. Ross ran past the bag as Aybar was forced to alter his throw back to first. The throw was late and Lester initially was safe at first until the review resulted in a double play.

Joey Logano wins at Michigan

The Associated Press BROOKLYN, Mich. – Joey Logano plopped into a seat, getting a much-needed break, when the 26-yearold driver found out he was just a part of history.

Logano pulled away from the pack to win the FireKeepers Casino 400 and was followed by 20-year-old Chase Elliott and 23-year-old Kyle Larson, the youngest top three in NASCAR Sprint Cup history.

“That’s pretty cool,” he said when informed of the feat Sunday.

The trio’s average age of 23 was younger than the 24.7 of the top three finishers at a race in 1951 and two races the previous year.

“The future of NASCAR is present,” Logano said. “It’s going to be big. It’s amazing to see.”

Logano, the pole-setter, moved past Elliott on lap 153 and stayed ahead for the 15th Sprint Cup series victory of his career in the 15th race of a year that has included 10 different winners.

Elliott finished a career-best sec-

ond, but wasn’t in the mood to celebrate because he blamed himself for poor restarts.

“I definitely messed up,” he said.

“Putting it in the correct gear would be a good start.”

Larson fell one place short of matching his best performance.

Brad Keselowski was fourth and points leader Kevin Harvick finished fifth at Michigan International Speedway.

Dale Earnhardt Jr., who finished 39th out of 40, is the only winner from 2015 that is winless this year.

NASCAR’s latest aerodynamic package made its debut, part of the sport’s plan to create more competitive racing.

“We hope it works,” team owner Joe Gibbs said, leaving a venue that used to be packed and now has pockets of empty seats in the 72,000-seat racetrack.

“We need more people in the stands.”

SLAMMERS 6, BUMS 5

TRAVERSE CITY, Michigan – The Joliet Slammers scored an unearned run on Boo Vasquez’s RBI groundout in the top of the ninth inning Sunday and closer Kevin McNorton shut the door in the bottom of the ninth for a 6-5 victory over the Traverse City Beach Bums.

The victory gave the Slammers (15-13) a series victory, two games to one, over the Beach Bums (9-17).

Liam O’Sullvan started for Joliet and worked five innings,

allowing six hits and three earned runs. He struck out nine and walked two. Marc Rutledge allowed two runs in 11/3 innings and winning pitcher Brent Choban yielded two hits and two walks but no runs in 12/3 innings. McNorton allowed a hit in the bottom of the ninth.

Joliet scored twice in the second inning when Carter Bell doubled and Marc Flores homered.

The Slammers then scored single runs in the third, fifth, seventh and ninth innings.

Flores’ sacrifice fly knocked

in Alfredo Rodriguez, who had singled, in the third. Rodriguez and Vasquez singled ahead of a run-scoring wild pitch in the fifth.

Nico Zych doubled, moved to third on Charlie White’s single and scored on Rodriguez’s sacrifice fly in the seventh.

White set up the decisive run in the ninth when he walked and stole second. Rodriguez reached on an error as White advanced to third before Vasquez drove in the go-ahead run.

Rodriguez and Jake Gronsky both had two of Joliet’s 10 hits.

The Associated Press SAN JOSE, Calif. – A turnaround season for the Pittsburgh Penguins ended with Sidney Crosby once again holding the Stanley Cup. Crosby set up Kris Letang’s go-ahead goal midway through the second period and the Pittsburgh Penguins won the fourth Stanley Cup in franchise history by beating the San Jose Sharks, 3-1, in Game 6 of the final Sunday night.

Brian Dumoulin opened the scoring with a power-play goal and Patric Hornqvist added a

late empty-netter. Matt Murray made 18 saves to give the Penguins a championship seven years to the day after they beat Detroit for their third title.

The game ended when Crosby cleared the puck the length of the ice with San Jose on the power play, setting off a wild celebration.

Three nights after squandering a chance to become the first Pittsburgh team to win a title in front of the home fans in 56 years, the Penguins finished the job on the road just like they did in Minnesota (1991), Chicago (1992) and Detroit (2009) in past title runs.

The championship in Detroit was supposed to be the first of many for a team led by players like Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.

But a series of concussions that led Crosby to miss almost entire season and a half, and a run of early playoff exits that included twice blowing 3-1 series leads prevented a second celebration in the Crosby era until now.

This didn’t seem like it would be a season to remember back in early December when the Penguins were the near the bottom of the standings in the Eastern Conference and coach Mike Johnston was fired.

BEECHER – The Illinois Horse Rescue of Will County is hosting a “Horsey Fun Night” from 5 to 7 p.m. June 24, 3751 W. Church Road, Beecher.

The event will include a tour of the facility, including a introduction to the rescued horses and hearing their stories. Participants will learn how to groom and saddle a horse as well as how to ride a horse. There also will be a short demonstration of lunging and desensitizing a horse.

A minimum $30 donation is requested. All proceeds will go directly to feeding Phoenix, a horse that still needs to gain over 350 pounds. His care requires over $300 a month.

Diet can prevent kidney stones Dear Dr. K: I recently passed a kidney stone, and it was really painful. My doctor gave me medicine. Is there anything else I can do to prevent another one?

Dear Reader: Besides the medicine, your diet can influence your risk of getting another kidney stone. Kidney stones are hard chemical deposits that form inside the kidneys. They can be as small as grains of sand and pass painlessly out of the body in urine. But they also can be the size of a pea, a marble or even larger.

If one of those stones gets into the ureters – the tubes that connect each kidney to the bladder – it can cause intense pain and bleeding. This may require medication and/or hospitalization to have the stone removed or broken into fragments.

Kidney stones form if too many minerals are excreted into the urine. Low fluid volume, caused by dehydration, is another cause. Most kidney stones are made of calcium oxalate. This is a combination of calcium and oxalic acid. Stones also may be made of other substances. Your doctor can have your stone analyzed to see what it was made of.

People who have already had a kidney stone have a high risk of forming another one. Your doctor should tailor your dietary recommendations based on what your kidney stone is made of. These are the dietary changes that often are recommended: – Drink plenty of fluids to keep your urine dilute, so minerals won’t accumulate into stones. Drink at least 10 glasses of fluid a day, half of which should be water.

– It may seem paradoxical, but eating calcium-rich foods actually reduces your risk of stones. That’s because absorbing lots of calcium in your gut reduces how

Good sources of calcium include milk, cheese, yogurt, oranges and broccoli. On the other hand, calcium pills can raise your risk for kidney stones because they increase the calcium in your blood and urine without decreasing oxalic acid. So avoid calcium pills.

• Don’t eat too much of foods that are rich in oxalic acid. These include beets, spinach, chard, rhubarb, tea, coffee, cola, chocolate and nuts.

• Keep your sodium intake under 1,500 mg a day. A low-sodium diet reduces the amount of calcium the kidney puts into the urine.

• Avoid or limit red meat. Animal protein increases the tendency of stones to form in the urine.

• Most plant-based foods protect against kidney stones. High-potassium fruits such as tomatoes and bananas are best. Citrus fruits – except grapefruit – are another good choice.

• Obesity increases the risk of stones, so try to shed excess pounds through a combination of fewer calories and regular exercise.

No one who has suffered the pain of a first kidney stone wants to experience a second stone. Fortunately, you can do a lot to reduce your risk.

As you know, there are several aphorisms about bridge. For example, “second hand low” and “third hand high,” which are right most of the time. This week, let’s look at “cover an honor with an honor.”

Today’s deal is a textbook example. How does the play go in three no-trump after West leads the heart queen?

South is loath to open one notrump with a low doubleton, but the bid describes his hand type and strength so accurately.

Declarer starts with seven top tricks: one spade, one heart, two diamonds and three clubs. If the clubs break 3-3, that will provide an eighth winner. Then, if the spade finesse works, the contract will make. With the heart suit wide open, South cannot afford to give up a diamond. So, declarer wins the second heart and cashes his top clubs. Now East must be careful, discarding a diamond.

Has East made an error, throwing a diamond from an initial three-card holding (so diamonds are now 2-2)?

South takes his diamond king, then plays a diamond to dummy’s ace.

Again luck is out to lunch -- West accurately throws a heart.

It is time for spades. Declarer calls for dummy’s queen. Note that if East covers with the king, South wins with his ace, then leads a low spade to dummy’s nine. That finesse works too, and declarer makes his contract with three spades, one heart, two diamonds and three clubs. But if East plays low, the contract can be defeated.

This is the rule that works most of the time: Cover not the first but the last of touching honors. East ducks dummy’s first spade honor, but if South continues with the second, East covers.
