Will County Board to consider more electronic recycling locations

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Two more electronic recycling drop-off locations could open in Will County if the County Board approves Thursday a pair of intergovernmental agreements.

The board’s Executive Committee voted Thursday in favor of deals with the village of Peotone and New Lenox Township for the two government bodies to host electronic drop-off events twice a month. There is currently one active drop-off location, in Lockport, for electronics recycling in the county.

Will County Resource Recovery and Energy Division recycling specialist Marta Keane said the Lockport location, open from 6 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays and Fridays at the Lockport Public Works Department, has been successful. Each session averages 80 to 100 vehicles that drop off unwanted electronics, which are shrink wrapped onto pallets, placed in a 53-foot trailer and hauled away by the county’s new vendor, Electronic Recyclers International.

So far, this strategy is working, Keane said.

March 1 was the day the county’s old program – including its 13 drop-off sites – ended after its longtime recycling vendor exited its contract prematurely. That left officials scrambling to find a new one and consumers without an outlet to drop off old electronics.

Keane said it seems several smaller drop-off events a month provide a consistency residents can take advantage of without sitting in backed-up traffic on Houbolt

Road during the yearly Recyclepalooza at Joliet Junior College.

The twice-monthly events in Peotone and New Lenox Township would complement the Lockport events well, Keane said. The proposed Peotone drop-off events would be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on the first and third Wednesdays of each month at the village’s police department. The New Lenox Township office’s events would be from 5 to 7 p.m. the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month.

Residents from each of the county’s municipalities have made trips to Lockport to drop off electronics, Keane said, but this would bring more opportunity to southern and eastern county residents.

People from any of Will County’s 37 communities would be allowed to use the sites, Keane said. If a municipality has a portion of its boundaries within Will County, such as Naperville or Minooka, residents from any part of the municipality can drop off electronics. Identification cards are checked at the drop-off site. Dropoff events are limited to two televisions per vehicle.

The programs could continue through the rest of the year with board approval.

Will County Executive Committee recs 2 replacement hires

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Staffing issues were a topic of discussion Thursday during the Will County Board’s Executive Committee meeting.

The committee approved recommendations for the full County Board to consider Thursday for hiring replacements for one position each in two departments.

Will County Supervisor of Assessments Rhonda Novak requested the committee recommend the hire of an administrative assistant at a salary of $40,000 per year. The office has operated with as many as 29 employees, Novak said, but was cut to 27 in recent years. It is currently running with 25 employees after two left in recent months.

placement hire. She said a four-year flow chart presented to the committee indicated an upswing in development in the county and the position needs to be filled.

“With 95 new subdivisions in the county soon, it requires additional mapping work,” Novak said. “We’ve cut mapping staff significantly over recent years.”

Novak asked the committee to recommend the hire, which she said would help the office maintain its place as the most timely of its kind of the 102 counties in the state.

Committee Chairman Jim Moustis, RFrankfort, asked if it’s true there are peak times of the year within the office and other slower times. Novak replied that was incorrect and the workload is constant throughout the year. Committee member Herb Brooks Jr., D-Joliet, asked if the hire was needed immediately. Novak said it

was, and that she’s only asking to replace one of two openings in the office.

Moustis said he leaned toward giving a recommendation to the full board to hire a replacement. The committee agreed.

Will County Emergency Management Agency Director Harold Damron requested the committee recommend the hire of a technological hazards program specialist at an annual salary of $44,000. Damron said his office is a small one, with six full-time emergency managers who all play important roles.

Committee member Tom Weigel, R-New Lenox, said it’s important to maintain the position as the functions of the agency are mandated by federal government and the replacement hire would specialize in chemical matters.

The committee recommended the full board approve the hire.

SCHOOLS TACKLE PROJECTS Staff take on construction, improvements for facilities

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – With the onset of summer, several Will County school districts will be busy with either construction or maintenance projects.

High school districts in Joliet and Lockport, as well as Joliet District 86 and Plainfield District 202, have work planned for the summer. Turf construction for District 202 has begun while District 86 plans to address asbestos abatement and refurbishing work.

Anna White, District 86 director of facilities, said the season is a good time to tackle projects that might require shutting off water or power to buildings.

“Those kind of things we can’t do

for an extended period of time when children are there,” White said.

White gave a presentation to the district’s Board of School Inspectors on May 11 on the summer construction and maintenance work.

The biggest projects the district has on its plate include concrete work at Culbertson Elementary School and replacing an exterior wall at Marshall Elementary School.

The most challenging is probably the asbestos abatement at Gompers, Culbertson and Marshall schools, as well as the J.F.K. administrative center and Building Support Services building, White said early this week.

high school campuses, the stadium fields will be replaced this summer with a target completion date for mid-September, according to the district’s website.

The two newest fields at Plainfield East and North campuses will be replaced in the summer of 2017 and completed that fall as well.

District officials have stated in a news release the stadium project at the high schools is the first significant capital project in almost a decade and will

fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Lincoln-Way District 210 board members were in closed session Thursday and were expected to select new members as a result of two resignations.

The board met for a special meeting. On the agenda after closed session, which began at 6 p.m., was action on the appointment of members to fill seats on the board.

The board has two vacancies, following the resignations of Arvid Johnson and Kathleen Casey. The district received 19 total applications for the two seats.

Board President Dee Molinare wrote in an email that the interviewing process for candidates began at the May 26 meeting, and that Thursday nine candidates would be interviewed. Two people applied but did not interview during the first round.

Board Vice President Christine Glatz was absent Thursday.

Public comment

Some residents demanded answers to questions on district issues and rumors, after a Will County judge’s dismissal of a lawsuit against the board by Lincoln-Way Area Taxpayers Unite.

“Now that the lawsuit is dismissed, this community fully expects to hear from you,” said Stacey Ripp, a North parent and LWATU member. “This body of taxpaying citizens deserves to

know the truth and for you to answer questions.”

Yet the board and district officials at the meeting didn’t answer many of the questions asked. Superintendent Scott Tingley answered some questions one speaker had regarding the driver’s education waiver and director of transportation position.

But other questions, including those asked by speaker Kerry White of Frankfort went unanswered. One question White asked was what she said she heard about Aunt Nancy’s Child Care and side compensations supposedly given to former Superintendent Lawrence Wyllie and Tingley as a result of the district’s partnership with the business.

None of her questions were answered, leading one audience member to ask: “What’s your excuse for

not answering questions now?”

“The silence is deafening,” another audience member said.

In her speech, Ripp thanked North teachers, coaches and staff as well as the student body for making the final year of the high school unforgettable.

She said her only regret was the district not allowing for a closing ceremony to honor the memories of North’s eight years.

Ripp also urged the community to attend board meetings, ask questions and investigate. At the point of tears, she said she is a proud member of the (North) Phoenix community, which has become like a family to her.

“The Phoenix blood will continue to run through our veins. Thank you to all of the students and families from 2008 to 2016 for leaving a legacy of greatness,” she said.

Joliet District 86 to welcome new business official

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet Public Schools District 86 will have a new assistant superintendent for business and financial services, according to a district news release.

Tamara Mitchell will replace E. Wesley Russell as the new business official for the district July 1, district officials stated in a news release. Rus-

sell will retire at the end of June, said Sandy Zalewski, the district’s spokeswoman.

Last December, Superintendent Charles Coleman, who will also retire this year, said Tamara Russell would have Mitchell changes in his duties and responsibilities based on overall needs for the district.

Mitchell comes from Bradley Elementary School District 61, where she has been the finance and business operations director since 2011, according to the news release.

She also has business experience at Crete-Monee School District 201-U, Matteson Elementary School District 162 and Thornton Township High School District 205.

Mitchell has a bachelor’s degree from Purdue University and a mas-

ter’s degree in education and school business management from Northern Illinois University.

Other administrative changes

Laura Hodge, Dirksen Junior High School interim assistant principal, was approved by the board to become assistant principal. Kenny Johnson, interim academic adviser at Dirksen, was approved to become academic adviser.

Letter to judge: Jurors read news coverage during trial for Joliet restaurant slaying

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A defense attorney is asking for a new trial for a man convicted of murder after he said some members of the jury who found him guilty read about the case in The Herald-News.

Defense attorney John Casey on Thursday made a letter from “Juror No. 4” that was sent to the court after the verdict the centerpiece of his argument to Judge Daniel Rozak that Christopher Thompson should be granted a new trial.

On Aug. 3, 2013, Gerardo Franchini was Christopher eating breakfast with Thompson his wife and her young daughter and niece at Louis’ Family Restaurant, 1001 W. Jefferson St., when Thompson came in with a girlfriend. The two men, who had an ongoing feud, argued and Thompson left.

About 15 minutes later, he returned while covering his face with a T-shirt, walked to Franchini’s table and shot him several times, according to trial

Casey said Juror No. 4 read news coverage after the case was finished and realized other jurors had made reference during deliberations to information contained in the stories about the defendant’s and victim’s criminal history. Judges instruct jurors not to follow media coverage or research the case during any break in a trial.

“Her letter is conjecture,” Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Mike Fitzgerald said. “The two jurors don’t say ‘Yes. We know from reading The Herald-News that he has an arrest record.’ ” The letter also stated an alternate juror said she knew she’d be joining the jury to decide the case before court began one day after “she knew from

the paper” another was being dismissed because of a job conflict, Casey said.

Another juror said, “These guys are probably all high on drugs,” according to the letter. Casey argued that “racially charged statement” referenced Thompson and Franchini being minorities. But Rozak agreed with Fitzgerald that criminal courtrooms show drug use is a problem affecting all races. “[The juror] says that based on those comments, she changed her mind. Well, that’s what happens in deliberation,” Fitzgerald said.

Rozak said he will rule on the motion later this month. He could order a new trial, hold a hearing to get testimony from the jurors or decide anything they read was harmless to the outcome of their deliberations.

LOCAL BRIEFS Car slides under truck in far west Joliet

JOLIET – A woman was seriously injured after her car crashed into a box truck Thursday afternoon on Joliet’s far west side.

Joliet Deputy Fire Chief Ray Randich said the collision happened about 1:30 p.m. at Caton Farm and Grove roads.

“The car went under the truck and heavy equipment was needed to extricate the driver,” Randich said. Extrication took more than an hour.

Joliet Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory said witnesses told police the 26-yearold woman was driving a silver 2003 Chevrolet Malibu west on Caton Farm Road when she disregarded a four-way stop sign.

“The Malibu was wedged under the 20foot delivery truck, which was northbound on Grove after stopping,” Gregory said.

The truck driver, a 45-year-old man, was not injured, according to Joliet Fire Capt.

A helicopter was called to the scene and the Malibu driver was flown to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove in critical condition, according to Blackburn.

JOLIET – City officials believe they can keep the banquet hall at Union Station open when Bussean Custom Caterers leaves in January.

A request for qualifications mailed out to banquet operators throughout the Chicago region attracted three very good prospects, said Joliet Economic Development Director Steve Jones.

“I think we can describe them as top-shelf candidates that will maintain and even enhance what is there now,” Jones said.

The three potential banquet operators are not being named. They would still need to submit proposals to be reviewed by the city before one is selected.

But Jones said he believes a committee reviewing the prospects will be able to present a recommendation to the City Council for approval by August.

That should leave plenty of time for the future operator to move in as Bussean moves out, so the Union Sta-

tion banquet facility does not have to close during the transition, Jones said.

All three prospects have solid banquet experience, Jones said. One is in Joliet, another is outside the city but in Will County and the third is a Chicago metropolitan business.

The city sent 70 requests for qualifications to banquet businesses throughout the Chicago area. Jones said he would have liked to have seen more responses but was not disappointed because of the type of companies that are interested.

“I think the quality of what we got indicates it’s a quality space,” he said. “It all comes down to the quality that you get.”

Councilman Larry Hug, who heads the council’s Economic Development Committee, said he was pleased with the companies interested in taking over the Union Station operation.

“They’re all quality. We can’t lose with any of them,” Hug said.

Bussean has operated the Grand Ballroom at the old train station since 2001, but notified the city earlier this year of his plans to leave in January.

JOLIET – A plan to convert five residential parcels on Collins Street to a commercial strip will move ahead after the City Council approved rezoning this week.

The site at 210-220 Collins St. is a little more than a half-acre.

Chicago-based Aetna Development Corp. plans to put up two commercial buildings on the site, which now has houses.

City Manager Jim Hock told the council that the plan is to construct two buildings with space for three tenants on the site.

“At this point in time, tenants haven’t been announced, but we do understand that they have tenants for all of

the locations,” Hock said.

Aetna Development Corp. also is redeveloping the strip center at 457 E. Cass St. where a new Checkers restaurant will be added. The developer previously demolished the former Prayer Tower Church of God in Christ building on Cass Street to make room for the Advance Auto Parts and Family Dollar stores now on the site.

The council Tuesday also approved special use permits for two other businesses: • Love It Again Refurbished Furniture and More, a resale store, is planned for 650 Ruby St. at a location that once was a tattoo parlor.

• A muffler shop that will also provide minor auto repairs will replace the vacant oil-change shop in the strip mall at 426 S. Chicago St.

JOLIET – Temperatures will rise to the 90s Friday and Saturday in Joliet but the hot weekend is expected to end with cooler weather. Friday and Saturday will be mostly sunny with highs near 93 and 94 degrees, respectively, according to the National Weather Service.

While it won’t be a heat wave – the temperatures won’t be breaking any records – the humidity levels will be increasing, said Casey Sullivan, National Weather Service meteorologist.

Joliet city officials reminded residents in a Thursday news release to check on seniors and those with medial conditions or special needs during periods of extreme hot weather. They also should be mindful of car interiors, which can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.

“Never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle,” the news release stated.

The hot weather has caused the Illinois High School Association to announce schedule changes to IHSA Class 3A and Class 4A baseball state finals for Friday, which will affect games for Providence Catholic and Plainfield North high schools.

is charged in Lee County DUI crash SHAW MEDIA A Plainfield man is facing a driving under the influence charge after he was involved in a two-vehicle crash early Wednesday morning on Route 30 near the northern Illinois town of Rochelle.

Jason J. McNamara, 40, was traveling east in his pickup truck when at 3:49 a.m. he entered Jason J. the westbound lane and McNamara struck a semitrailer

driven by Clarence E. Jones, 64, of Naperville, according to a news release from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

Jones was taken to Rochelle Community Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening; McNamara refused treatment at the scene, the news release stated.

McNamara also is charged with obstructing justice and improper lane use. He was given a recognizance bond and taken to Will County Jail because of an outstanding warrant in the county, according to the news release.

MORRIS – The music on the main stage at this weekend’s Gebhard Woods Dulcimer and Traditional Music Festival will seemingly follow in the Illinois spring tradition of the weather: If you don’t like it, wait an hour. It will change.

For two days in Goold Park, across the street from the Morris Municipal Swimming Pool, the Gebhard Dulcimer Festival will host its annual get-together this weekend.

Every hour on the hour, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. both days, a new performer will take the stage. Meanwhile, all of the performers will be giving workshops on various topics and types of music when they are not performing.

There also will be breakfast and lunch, along with drinks and desserts, offered to go along with the music, with featured food vendors being Boy Scout Troop 33 of DeKalb and Kool Kat Ice

Breakfast will offer up pancakes, breakfast sausage, scrambled eggs and coffee, while the lunch menu will consist of chicken wraps, veggie wraps, pulled pork, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, polish or smoked sausage, sweet corn and chips. Drinks and desserts on hand will be lemon shakeups, root beer floats, pop, bottled water, ice cream and funnel cakes.

There also will be a children’s area, fully staffed and supervised, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. both days, where crafts, music and other activities will be offered to children 3 and older.

“This is our 27th year coming to Morris, and we really like it,” festival spokesman Steve Karlovsky said. “We are really trying to get this next generation involved. The HERALD–NEWS JOLIET – Work will begin Monday on improvements at the intersection of Caton Farm and Essington roads, according to a news release from the city of Joliet.

The project will include widening the intersection to accommodate southbound-only and eastbound-only right turn lanes. Additionally, the existing traffic signals will be modified, new curbs and gutters will be installed, and the pavement will be resurfaced within the project limits.

Preliminary work will start Monday and will be completed via daily

lane closures.

Beginning July 5, barricades will be installed and traffic patterns will change.

A single left turn lane and two through lanes will be maintained in each direction of travel throughout the project. Daily lane closures will occur during normal working hours. There will not be a detour. The project is anticipated to be completed in mid-November.

Drivers should expect delays and use caution while driving through the area.

The 14th annual campaign to promote literacy was celebrated at a Joliet Slammers baseball game, and 30 students districtwide were recognized as winners of the annual Joliet Reads bookmark contest, according to a district news release.

The recognition took place during pregame activities at Silver Cross Field.

Next school year, the students’ bookmark creations will be given out to children and adults in Joliet to promote reading.

The Joliet Reads program launched in August 2003 and was spearheaded by a committee that included members of District 86 and the Joliet Public Library. Every month during the school year, different books are promoted to encourage reading.

At Joliet Township High School District 204, the Central campus fire pump is being replaced along with other site work and landscape work, district spokeswoman Kristine Schlismann said in an email.

The biggest project Lockport Township High School District 205 has for the summer is resurfacing the parking lot at its East campus, district spokeswoman Kim Brehm said. She said the project started last Monday and will last six weeks.

“We always do our normal maintenance projects,” Brehm said about other work the district is doing.

Lincoln-Way Community High School District 210 has no capital projects scheduled for this summer, said Taryn Atwell, the district’s spokeswoman.

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner and his wife, Diana, made a rare joint appearance Thursday at a cabinet discussion about youth policies amid her nonprofit group’s involvement in a lawsuit against his administration.

Diana Rauner, a Democrat who runs a child advocacy group called the Ounce of Prevention Fund, sat opposite her Republican husband at the two-hour meeting. But the pair did not interact until she delivered a presentation on early childhood education.

The show of unity came as the Rauner administration is battling a lawsuit by 82 social service providers, including Diana Rauner’s Ounce, demanding that the state pay up on $130 million that is locked up in the first-term governor’s nearly yearlong budget standoff with Democratic lawmakers.

The awkward situation for the cou-

ple has raised eyebrows – and at least one jab at Rauner, by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel – over Diana Rauner’s twin roles as first lady and social services advocate in Democratic-leaning Illinois.

The meeting Thursday was the second for a cabinet created by Rauner earlier this year to address improvements to education, health and safety for children, and to streamline inter-department collaboration. It includes about 20 leaders from different state departments.

Diana Rauner participated in the cabinet’s first meeting in March, but only by phone through a conference call.

At Thursday’s meeting, neither Rauner directly mentioned the budget crisis. But in her remarks, Diana Rauner said the complex combination of federal, state and local money flowing into education is a “hot mess.” The governor didn’t have an immediate reaction.

She also praised Illinois’ efforts in “building an early childhood system in this state since 1985,” noting state laws solidifying Illinois’ commitment to education for children from birth to age 3.

The governor, in his remarks, said the panel needs to make the education component of the group’s goals more of

a priority.

“Education is so big and so critical and in my view not well-baked enough here yet,” he said.

At the end of the meeting the governor said, “It matters more to get it right than to rush,” adding: “then we’ll end up not only failing to deliver quality service, we’ll hurt taxpayers, and we just won’t be where we need to be. We got to do this right.”

In the lawsuit, which targets Rauner and state agencies, the social service providers claim the governor created an “unconstitutional” situation by vetoing appropriations while enforcing contracts for services. For Ounce, it means about $7 million in state funds is unavailable.

The governor has previously acknowledged the odd situation with his wife, saying she is angry about the impasse and lets him know, but that she’s also mad at Democrats who control the House and Senate.

Fallout of Illinois budget feud grows

CHICAGO – The consequences of Illinois lawmakers’ epic failure to approve a state budget continue to pile up, with new warnings about unfunded 911 call centers and schools, thousands of road construction jobs in jeopardy and the long-term cost to taxpayers growing by the billions.

Yet, the political sniping between Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democrats who run the Legislature hasn’t changed: Each side blames the other, and neither appears willing to budge. The only state without a budget for the fiscal year that ends this month, Illinois is on the brink of entering a record second year without a plan if lawmakers can’t reach a deal by July 1.

A group of business leaders warned Thursday that lack of action will put at risk nearly $2 billion in summer road and bridge construction projects and 25,000 jobs. Already, the state has seen the percentage of roads rated as being in “acceptable” condition dip below 80 percent for the first time; 79 percent have that rating, which state transportation officials said means drivable but in need of an upgrade.

CHICAGO – A second major credit rating agency has downgraded Illinois’ rating, citing financial “mismanagement” by state leaders amid a yearlong budget impasse.

S&P Global Ratings lowered the rating Thursday from BBB+ to BBB. The agency said the lack of a budget for the current fiscal year has “left Illinois with unmanaged spending” that could go on for another year.

Illinois had the worst credit rating of any state even before the current impasse between Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and majority Democrats.

The Republican governor insists that any long-term spending plan, which is likely to include a Rauner-sanctioned tax increase, must be accompanied by business-friendly legislation that he believes will improve Illinois’ economy. Democrats argue his priorities, which include weakening labor unions and cutting the cost

of workers’ compensation insurance, will hurt the middle class.

And even as bipartisan groups of rank-and-file lawmakers, with the blessing of legislative leaders and Rauner, have been meeting to try to craft a solution, the governor and Madigan indicated Thursday peace is far from imminent.

Rauner spokeswoman Catherine Kelly blamed the credit downgrade on Madigan and “rank-and-file Democrats who blindly followed the speaker.”

Hours later, Madigan issued a statement calling the ongoing impasse an “outrage.”

“This downgrade is directly attributable to Gov. Rauner’s reckless decision to hold the state hostage for more than a year and to create the crisis he desired,” Madigan said.

In Chicago, hundreds of students and parents crowded outside the downtown building where state elected officials, including Rauner, have offices to call for more funding and a change to the way Illinois distributes money to schools.

“We want Gov. Rauner, Speaker Madigan and Senate President Cullerton to come together and to lead,” said Natalie Neris, whose daughters attend city schools. “We want them to lead with a sense of urgency.”

High lead levels in water found at 2 more schools

CHICAGO – Chicago Public Schools said two more schools have tested positive for lead in the water flowing from fountains, bringing the number to 14.

Schools CEO Forrest Claypool said Thursday the 14 cases of lead is out of 65 schools for which test results are available.

MACOMB – Trustees at Western Illinois University are to decide this week on whether they will eliminate four degree programs because of poor enrollment and low graduation rates.

The Chicago Tribune reported that the programs include African-American studies, philosophy, religious studies and women’s studies. They would be cut from the Macomb and Quad Cities campuses. Trustees are to vote Friday.

Interim provost and academic vice president Kathleen Neumann said if trustees eliminate the programs there would be cuts to faculty positions in the 2017-18 school year. If the cuts are approved, no new students could declare the majors and students already in the programs would receive individualized study plans to complete their degrees.

It was all part of a carefully orchestrated pressure campaign aimed at easing Clinton rival Bernie Sanders toward the exit and turning fully to the fight against Republican Donald Trump.

Obama’s long-expected endorsement, delivered via web video, included a forceful call for unity and for “embracing” Sanders’ economic message, which has fired up much of the liberal wing of his party. Obama sought to reassure Democrats that Clinton shares their values and is ready for the job.

“Look, I know how hard this job can be.

That’s why I know Hillary will be so good at it,” Obama said. “I have seen her judgment. I have seen her toughness. I’ve seen her commitment to our values.”

Obama’s testimonial came less than an hour after the president met privately with Sanders at the White House to discuss the future of the senator’s so-called political revolution – one that will not include him taking up residence at the White House. Sanders emerged from the meeting subdued and indicated he had gotten the message.

Although he stopped short of endorsing Clinton, the Vermont senator told reporters

he planned to press for his “issues” – rather than victory – at the party’s July convention and would meet with Clinton “in the near future” to discuss ways to defeat Trump.

“Needless to say, I am going to do everything in my power and I will work as hard as I can to make sure that Donald Trump does not become president of the United States,” Sanders said, standing in the White House driveway with his wife, Jane, at his side.

In another sign of Democratic unification, Sen. Elizabeth Warren made plans to endorse Clinton. The Massachusetts senator had been the only holdout among the Senate’s Democratic woman, and her endorsement would send a signal to Sanders’ progressive supporters that it’s time to unite around the party’s presumptive nominee.

Warren’s endorsement was to come Thursday evening in an appearance on MSNBC, according to two Senate officials who demanded anonymity to confirm the news ahead of time.

Clinton declared victory over Sanders on Tuesday, having captured the number of delegates needed to become the first female nominee from a major party. Her late and somewhat sputtering victory set off a fresh round of private phone calls and back-channel negotiations, all aimed at sussing out Sanders’ demands, easing him out of the race without angering his die-hard supporters and putting the full-court press on Trump.

Obama’s endorsement and Sanders’ visit were the public culmination of that work.

History pupils shouldn’t learn Paul Rauner is riding his horse across Illinois and sounding the alarm: “August is coming! August is coming! Your kids might not go back to school!”

On the other side is the patient Gen. Mike “Status Quo” Madigan, who gazes at the years stretching out like legions and is unruffled by alarmists and needs of the moment. “This one, too, shall pass.”

Rauner hopes to convince Madigan’s loyalists to join the revolution for the greater good. Madigan has faith in his power to crush the insurrection.

Too bad Illinois’ schoolchildren are likely to be crushed between the combatants.

Last summer Gov. Bruce Rauner got lawmakers to agree that their budget and reform disagreements should not hold the state’s students hostage. The school funding portion of the state budget was passed.

No such deal this year. House Speaker Madigan realizes he made a strategic blunder last year by allowing the schools to get money. This year he will use that leverage and point to Rauner as the man pushing an “extreme” personal agenda that “hurts the middle class.”

So your kindergartener just became a child soldier in the Army of Madigan. Here’s how the schools are likely to react if there is no hope of state funding until after the November elections: • Some districts are property tax poor and live hand-tomouth on state checks. Those districts will not open in August if there is no state budget for 2017.

• Some districts have enough property taxes and can drain funds to open and operate until November-ish. They can open and hope state lawmakers can do in 2017 what they failed to do for nearly all of 2016 – pass a state budget. The Illinois Constitution mandates a budget each year and that it be balanced, so lawmakers are at Strike 2 for passing and Strike 15 for balanced.

• That same group of schools could decide that union contracts or being fair to teachers, or being upfront so parents can plan means they would be reckless were they to open in August and drain all their cash. They could decide not to open until the state gets its act together.

• Some districts, mainly in the Chicago suburbs, could open and be fine for much of the year because most of their money is from property taxes. This is a small minority in Illinois.

Districts later this month must start putting their plans in motion. The hidden cost from the budget boondoggle is that new teachers will look outside Illinois for jobs and some experienced teachers may decide the uncertainty is worth joining the convoy of moving vans out of Illinois.

The one glimmer is that when Madigan’s $7 billion deficit budget came up for a vote in the Illinois Senate, they refused to pass it. Even our own state Sen. James Clayborne, a Democrat from Belleville and the Senate’s second-most powerful member, chickened out and voted “present.” Our other local state Senators, Democrat Bill Haine and Republicans Dave Luechtefeld and Kyle McCarter, opposed the Madigan budget bill.

Maybe there is a glimmer of hope this summer for a 6-month state budget and money for our schools. Before then, Rauner and his nag have a lot of musket fire to duck and poisoned wells to avoid.

Brighter forecast for remap reform The weekend weather forecast for our region calls for highs in the 90s. Whew!

The political forecast for Illinois portends a long, hot summer if legislators and the governor can’t resolve their nearly yearlong budget dispute. So what else is new?

Fortunately, the redistricting reform forecast for Illinois is looking brighter these days.

Much brighter.

On June 3, attorneys for the Independent Maps coalition filed documents in response to a lawsuit filed by an ally of House Speaker Michael Madigan, the powerful Chicago Democrat who opposes the Independent Map Amendment that would strip politicians of their once-a-decade redistricting authority and turn that duty over to an 11-member citizens commission.

Redistricting reform lawyers actually filed three documents.

The first is a 38-page motion for judgment on the pleadings, which argues for dismissal of the lawsuit.

The second is a collection of supporting exhibits, which totals 85 pages.

The third is a paragraph-by-paragraph rebuttal of the complaint, totaling 30 pages.

To us, their case looks strong. They have learned well from previous remap reform

failures.

On June 30, oral arguments are scheduled in Cook County Circuit Court. The Independent Maps coalition hopes the court system upholds the campaign to place the amendment on the Nov. 8 ballot.

The court case follows the successful passage of the Independent Maps’ petition test at the state Board of Elections.

If you wonder what all this has to do with you, just look at our unresponsive Illinois General Assembly, record-long budget impasse, financial woes and dysfunctional state.

Redistricting abuse by parties in power limits competition and accountability for state representatives and senators, who come to care more about pleasing political bosses in Springfield than the folks back home.

However, if legislative districts are no longer drawn by politicians, they would be more likely to serve the public better through elected officials who are more accountable for their actions, or lack thereof.

That’s a long-range forecast we hope becomes reality for the good of our long-suffering state.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

A chance at history this weekend in Joliet VIEWS Curt Herron I love history, so it’s quite obvious where I’ll be this weekend.

And the nice thing for area baseball fans is that the Class 3A and 4A state finals are just a short trip away at Silver Cross Field.

Let me first talk about what’s happening in the Class 4A tournament.

In today’s 5 p.m. semifinal game, you have tradition-rich Providence Catholic going up against first-time state visitor Plainfield North.

While coach Mark Smith’s Celtics are the two-time defending champions in their class, coach John Darlington’s Tigers were viewed by many as the team to beat coming into the season.

And North certainly hasn’t disappointed, winning 28 of its last 29 games to bring a 33-3 record into the semifinal clash.

Meanwhile, Providence keeps finding ways to win games as it brings a 19-game playoff winning streak and a 31-9 record into the contest.

The Celtics have been particularly clutch in the sectionals, supersectionals and state finals, claiming 11 of their 13 wins by one run or in games separated by one run with an inning left.

If Smith’s squad can get the job done again this weekend, they’ll become the first team in Illinois history to win three straight championships in the sport.

While Providence seeks its fifth baseball title, the Tigers also have assured themselves of history by becoming the first team from their school to claim a trophy for a top-four finish.

In addition, North’s run is the furthest of any team in an elimination tournament for the entire Plainfield school district.

On Wednesday, the IHSA announced that the start of the Providence-Plainfield North semifinal game would be pushed back from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

With temperatures predicted to be in the mid-90s today, the state association made a wise decision to try to make conditions as safe as possible for the players in both classes.

More of the same is expected Saturday, as well as the possibility of afternoon showers, so don’t be surprised to see more adjustments to the weekend schedule.

Rarely in the history of the baseball tournament have two teams met so close to home for a state semifinal clash. The only instance I found that was closer happened in 1941 when rivals Peoria and Manual faced off in

You don’t often get a chance to see a team accomplish a feat that no other squad in state history has done before, but you’ll have that opportunity this weekend with the Celtics.

However, each of the other three programs in the 4A field have plenty of incentive. Both the Tigers and St. Charles North are hoping to cap their initial state trips with titles, and Mundelein can improve upon its previous-best showing, which was fourth place in 2002.

Meanwhile, the Class 3A finals also have plenty of interesting storylines.

Lemont will be trying to capture its second state title in three years. Coach Brian Storako’s Indians have several players who were on that 2014 squad, so they know what’s at stake.

The Indians bring a 28-9 record into their rescheduled 9 a.m. semifinal game with 25-15 Saint Viator. Although the Lions were around the .500-

mark just before the playoffs started, they’ve gotten hot and have won their last nine games.

While Lemont will be seeking its second trip to the title game in a short span, Saint Viator lost in the championship game in 1965 and hadn’t been back to state since then.

Springfield returns to state for the first time since 1985, when it was the runner-up, and Limestone also has been away from state for a decade and last competed in a title game in 1980, when it also took second.

So the other teams beside Lemont in the 3A semifinals will be looking at not only ending long droughts in title game appearances but also winning their first state championships.

With the teams entered in the field and all of the history at stake, this figures to be one of the more interesting state finals in a while. Hopefully local fans will come out in big numbers to support our area teams and to enjoy

Lake Erie snaps Joliet’s five-game win streak

cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – There was plenty at stake for the Joliet Slammers in Thursday’s Frontier League game against Lake Erie.

A Slammers win would not only complete a series sweep but would mark two-straight series and six consecutive games won by manager Jeff Isom’s team.

It also would move the Slammers past the Crushers into second place in the league’s East Division standings.

After scoring a run in the sixth to force a 1-1 tie, things weren’t looking bad for Joliet. But things deteriorated in the next two innings as Lake Erie scored nine times to roll to a 10-2 victory at Silver Cross Field.

The Crushers (13-9) took control of things with a four-run seventh inning and then removed all doubt by scoring five times in the eighth.

Joliet (13-12) nearly grabbed the early lead when Charlie White singled and Alfredo Rodriguez walked in the first inning and moved up a base with no outs.

After two popups, Marc Flores (2 for 4) smacked a deep fly to right but it was

caught.

Lake Erie moved in front in the third after loading the bases with one out. Carlos Avila (3 for 5, two RBI) singled home one run but Max Casper was thrown out at the plate and Avila was tagged out after being caught in a rundown between first and second.

The Slammers tied it in the sixth as Carter Bell and Flores both had two-out doubles.

But the Crushers responded in the seventh after again loading the bases with one out. The first run scored when Casper hit into a fielders choice and the second run came home on an error.

Connor Oliver (three RBIs) followed that with a two-run blast to right.

Joliet got its final run in the ninth when Hunter Ridge doubled and scored on an error. William Beckwith also went 3 for 5 for Lake Erie while Bryan De La Rosa drove in two runs.

Steve Hagen allowed five hits and one run while striking out five in six innings for the Crushers while Slammers starter Spencer Medick gave up five hits and a run while fanning four in six innings. Three Crushers relievers allowed two hits and a run in three innings.

Lemont seeks second title in three years

cherron@shawmedia.com Lemont’s first appearance in the baseball finals was a huge success, resulting in a Class 3A championship two years ago.

Coach Brian Storako is hoping his program’s second state trip is just as rewarding as the Indians try to claim a second title in three seasons.

The 28-9 Indians, who defeated De La Salle, 10-4, in Monday’s Crestwood Supersectional, kick off Friday’s Class 3A semifinals at the rescheduled time of 9 a.m. against 25-15 Saint Viator at Silver Cross Field in Joliet, feeling pretty good about their chances.

Lemont looks to be in a good position with its pitching since it can utilize hurlers such as Garrett Acton (62, 1.04 ERA), Ryan Sublette (8-1, 2.19 ERA), Nate Madej (5-2, 2.23 ERA) and Danny Rizzo (3-2, 2.01 ERA).

At the plate, the Indians’ top performers include Acton (.435 avg., 41 RBIs), Casey O’Brien (.412 avg., 27 RBIs), Nick Wisz (.391 avg., 24 RBIs), Dominic Connolly (.364 avg., 19 RBIs), Angel Salinas (.347 avg., 28 RBIs) and Austin Tittle (.286 avg., 22 RBIs) Acton, O’Brien, Sublette, Tittle and Wisz were all members of the Indians’ 2014 title squad.

15 following a loss May 16, but they’ve won their last nine, including a 12-3 victory over Fenwick in the North Central College Supersectional.

The Lions advanced to the state finals early in their school’s history, finishing in second place in 1965, but this is their first appearance since then.

Other semifinal games Class 3A – Limestone vs. Springfield

Jim Steinwart has won 575 baseball games during his 30 years at Springfield.

But one thing the hall of fame coach hadn’t accomplished yet was getting the Senators to the state finals. But that streak was snapped Monday when they beat Freeburg, 10-5, to advance to a 10:30 a.m. Class 3A semifinal game against Limestone at Silver Cross Field.

Steinwart and his squad made the most of their first sectional trip since 2000 to get back to state for the first time since 1985, when they were second in Class AA. Springfield (33-5) is seeking to avenge a regular-season defeat to Limestone.

The Senators rely on Ethan Klay (7-

1, 0.73 ERA), Michael Lavin (9-0, 1.15 ERA) and Austin Troemper (6-1, 1.58 ERA) on the mound and Damian Pierce (.438 avg., 46 RBIs), Austin Alderman (.419 avg., 36 RBIs) and Jake Langellier (.392 avg., 18 RBIs) at the plate.

Limestone is playing at state for the first time since 2006, when it capped a six-year run with four tournament trips. It won one trophy during that span, placing fourth in 2005.

The Rockets (30-7) beat Springfield, 7-5, on May 20, which was its fourth victory in a current nine-game winning streak. It lost to Richwoods twice this season, but then edged it, 2-1, in the regional final. They assured themselves of a state trip with a 3-1 win over Sycamore.

Coach Derek Renz looks to pitchers Bryce Meyer (11-0, 1.10 ERA), Tanner Rhoades (10-1, 1.44 ERA) and Calvin Peacock (5-2, 3.00 ERA) and to hitters such as Sam Koeppel (.351 avg., 24 RBIs), James Welton (.345 avg., 19 RBIs) and Blake Marsh (.294 avg., 14 RBIs).

Class 4A – Mundelein vs. St. Charles North

Although Todd Genke has had a lot of good teams and won 319 games in the 12-year history of St. Charles North’s program, the North Stars hadn’t been able to earn a trip to state.

But North assured itself of a date in

this weekend’s Class 4A finals when it beat New Trier, 4-3, at Schaumburg to give it a 32-6 record heading into a 6:30 p.m. matchup with 30-9 Mundelein at Silver Cross Field.

The North Stars have won three straight one-run games in the postseason and have held opponents to one run or less 19 times this year.

The Mustangs are back in the state finals for the first time since 2002 after rolling to an 8-0 win over Huntley in the other supersectional game at Schaumburg. They have outscored their opponents 30-7 in the playoffs.

Coach Todd Parola has won 569 games in his 22 years at Mundelein, with the previous highlight being his 2002 squad that finished in fourth place.

Mundelein relies on Brendan Murphy (9-2, 1.00 ERA), Will Michalski (82, 2.12 ERA) and Zach Zentz (4-1, 0.71 ERA) on the mound and on players such as Murphy (.426 avg., 33 RBIs), Jake Breitenreiter (.387 avg., 18 RBIs) and Jeff Morton (.372 avg., 16 RBIs) at the plate.

North looks to pitchers such as Jack Lambert (12-1, 1.42 ERA), Tom Hasto (5-0, 0.52 ERA) and Ryan Litavecz (4-2, 2.12 ERA) and to hitters such as Brendan Joyce (.381 avg., 26 RBIs), Zach Mettetal (.369 avg., 31 RBIs) and John Legare (.356 avg., 25 RBIs).

It will be a case of old versus new when Providence Catholic and Plainfield North meet at 5 p.m. in the Class 4A baseball semifinals at Silver Cross Field.

The Celtics will be making their ninth state finals appearance while the Tigers advanced to state for the first time. Beside being the two-time defending state champion, Providence also won Class A titles in 1978 and 1982 under Jaime Garcia.

Coach Mark Smith has taken three teams to championship games since 2011. The Celtics hope to do so again in their quest to become the first team to win three straight state titles.

Providence has won 19 straight playoff games, which is believed to be a state record and is certainly a new standard under the multi-class system. Eleven of their 13 post-regional wins were by a run or came in games separated by a run with one inning left. That includes their come-from-behind 4-3 win over Plainfield South in the Champaign Supersectional.

After falling just short of a trip to the finals a year ago, coach John Darlington’s Tigers punched their ticket with a 2-0 supersectional victory over St. Laurence in Crestwood.

That win assured North of its initial trophy for a top-four state finish in any sport.

It’s also the first time that a Plainfield district school has ever placed in an elimination tournament.

In an interesting note, both coaches began at their current posts in 2007 and they have won a nearly-identical number of games.

Smith is 266-118-2 while Darlington is 265-84.

The Celtics have won 14 of their last 16 games while the Tigers own 28 wins in their last 29 games, with their lone loss coming in the regular season finale.

Providence (31-9) relies on Connor Hilty (7-2, 1.93 ERA), Connor Creed (6-1, 1.83 ERA), Tyler Zarembka (6-2, 1.76 ERA) and Matt Trzesniewski (2-1, 2.16 ERA) on the mound.

At the plate, the Celtics call on Mike Madej (.434 avg., 26 RBIs), Zack Pych (.377 avg., 22 RBI), Jackson Dvorak (.374 avg., 32 RBIs), Matt Waznis (.315 avg., 39 RBIs), Jackson Stulas (.298 avg., 16 RBIs), Kevin Fitzgerald (.266 avg., 11 RBIs), Colin Airola (.254 avg., 17 RBIs) and Jim Jeffries (.238 avg., 22 RBI).

Four players are making their third finals appearances – Jeffries, Madej, Pych and Stulas.

Lewis tennis duo named All-Americans SUBMITTED REPORTS

ROMEOVILLE – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced on Thursday that Lewis University sophomores Dora Andrejszki and Nora Mindiyarova have been selected as 2016 Division II Women’s Tennis All-Americans.

The duo earned the accolade by virtue of their No. 7 standing in the final 2015-16 Oracle/ITA Division II Women’s National Doubles Rankings. Lewis finished the 201516 season with a record of 19-5 and advanced to the NCAA Midwest Region Championship match.

Andrejszki - the 2016 Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Year - and Mindiyarova - a two-time All-GLVC selection were a combined 32-3 on the court. They helped the Flyers capture the 2016 GLVC Championship and finished third overall at the USTA/ITA National Small College Women’s Doubles Championships in October.

“This is a great accomplishment by Dora and Nora in their first season together [as doubles partners],” Lewis head women’s tennis coach Brett Bridel said. “I am proud of the way they worked to improve and become a better doubles team. I am happy that they have not reached their ceiling either and can still continue to make great strides as a double team.”

‘Migration’ melds black migration, jazz and love for Joliet actor If you go

JOLIET – What does “Amazing Grace” have in common with a Chicago play about black migration to the north?

Nothing – except that it helped Kai Ealy, 28, of Joliet, land the lead role.

“Migration” opened April 29 at eta Creative Arts Foundation Inc. in Chicago. There are three more opportunities to see it: June 11, June 17 and June 18.

Then, on June 20, Ealy will participate in a public reading of George C. Wolfe’s “The Colored Museum,” also at eta.

According to the eta website, “Migration” is told through the eyes of jazz musician Noble Johnson and aspiring writer Lillian Stride, who marry and move north for a better life. But in July 1919, a riot erupts in Chicago after a black boy is stoned to death after he mistakenly swims into a white area of a beach, affecting the couple’s life in a tragic way.

Ealy, a busboy at Juliet’s in Joliet, plays Johnson, a role Ealy feels is poetic.

“He’s been a trumpet player since he was really young, about 5 years old,” Ealy said. “His uncle left a trumpet to him for safekeeping. [The uncle] went out to Louisiana to meet a woman and never came back. [Johnson] has been playing it ever since.”

Ealy said he spent time delving into and reflecting on the character. Why did Johnson like music so much? Why is he so in love with Lillian? Why does he go to Chicago with her?

“I really think this is a story of passion, not only just for the migration – the movement up to the northern states – but a passionate story about music and the love for another human being,” Ealy said. “It’s just a really good love story.”

Having grown up in Alabama after his parents’ divorce, Ealy began acting through Calhoun Community College. He moved to Joliet a year ago to live with his father and launch a professional acting career in Chicago.

His goal is to act in film and in Broadway plays.

Ealy said he applied for any role that called for a black man in his 20s across the Chicago area. He auditioned for “Migration” with a piece from “Hamlet.” Callbacks went better

He was asked to read for only Johnson. He then was asked back to dance and then to sing. Ealy said he wasn’t aware singing was part of the play and hadn’t prepared a song.

So he sang “Amazing Grace.”

“It was the only song I knew,” Ealy said.

Then Ealy was asked about his trumpet playing. Trumpet playing?

Ealy had played saxophone in middle school, but his little brother could play trumpet – maybe Ealy could devise something?

“They said, ‘Yeah that would be great,’ ” Ealy said. “My little sister is a classically trained pianist. She taught me how to play scales on the trumpet.

So I went back and played the scales and blew them away.”

Kemati Porter, artistic director for eta and director of “Migration” praised Ealy’s drive and talent, also noting his affinity for the role, since he himself “migrated” from Alabama to Joliet.

Those traits, combined with Ealy’s habit of arriving early for rehearsal, staying later when necessary and supporting his fellow performers, makes Ealy a joy to direct, Porter said. She

predicted Ealy will go far in an industry that’s “a crowded field.”

“He’s a very studious guy,” she said.

Once Ealy had the role, he carried the trumpet everywhere. Ealy said one co-performer finally asked, “Are you ever going to put that trumpet down?”

Ealy said he replied, “No, I have to get used to it. I have to look like I love it.”

Ealy feels immersion in a role effects an organic performance. It’s a freeing experience for him, similar to skateboarding. And yes, he skateboards too. But acting is his passion.

“I like to make people feel they’re happy or sad or angry with me because of my character,” Ealy said. “I want people to be in the moment and feel.”

Who should see this play? Anyone, especially people in the 17 to 35 age range, simply for its educational value, Ealy said. Through the telling of stories, “Migration” shows the difficulties black people faced when they left the south behind and settled in the unfamiliar north. Those stories should not be forgotten, Ealy said.

“It also shows how far we’ve come,” he said. “Not just as black people but as American people.”

The free event will begin at 11 a.m. and end at 3 p.m. at the Forest Preserve District of Will County’s Isle a la Cache Museum, 501 E. Romeo Road. This year’s event has more interactive stations that connect the past to the present.

For instance, visitors can sit in a modern kayak and then a birch bark canoe to compare the two vessels and talk about the differences in the modes of transportation. Participants also can learn to shoot a bow and arrow or try the sport of lacrosse, which originated as a Native American game.

“Island Rendezvous” also will feature: French crafts, storytelling, live music, a skillet toss, fire-starting demonstrations, face-painting, a fishing game and a petting zoo. Live birds of prey shows will be held at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in the Trader’s Cabin. Free show tickets will be available at the museum’s front desk.

Tickets are required for the birds of prey shows because seating is limited.

Rendezvous attendees also can explore a Native American longhouse. Redhawk, a Native American speaker, will represent the Potawatomi and Ojibwe nations and talk about Native American culture.

JOLIET – Joliet West High School senior Alyssa Rice has been named a finalist for the Illinois High School Music Theater

Awards.

Sponsored by Broadway in Chicago, IHSMTA selects 12 girls and 12 boys from Illinois high schools who nominate students from a pre approved list of roles. This year, Rice was eligible for her role as Margaret Johnson in “The Light in the Piazza.”

On June 6, Rice and the other 23 finalists spent the day auditioning and rehearsing with professionals. Based on the day’s results, one boy and one girl will be named the winner. The entire group performed at an award ceremony that evening, and the winners perform their audition numbers.

The winners then are sent to New York to compete in the National High School Music Theater Awards.

MORRIS – The 27th annual festival is set for Saturday and Sunday at Goold Park in Morris.

34 Elephants help advance cancer research Dear Dr. K: I heard on the radio about new research finding elephants don’t get cancer. If we could figure out why, could we protect ourselves against cancer?

Dear Reader: A recent study found elephants (and many animals) do, in fact, get cancer, but have lower rates of death from it than humans do. The study also found one possible explanation that, as you suggest, someday might help us deal with cancer.

First, some basics. In a phrase coined by cancer biologist Robert Weinberg, every cancer begins with “one renegade cell.”

One cell starts to multiply uncontrollably.

Remarkable research over the past 40 years has unraveled at least some of the forces that cause cancers to start.

Some genes, called “oncogenes,” cause a cell to divide, again and again. One cell becomes two, two become four, and pretty soon you have a mass of thousands of cells – a tumor. Other genes, called “tumor suppressor genes,” keep a cell from dividing uncontrollably. Many human cancers involve the activation of oncogenes, or the inactivation of tumor suppressor genes, or both.

One tumor suppressor gene is called TP53. Each of us has two copies of the gene, one from each parent. In many human cancers, at least one copy has been knocked out by a mutation. There is a rare disease called Li-Fraumeni syndrome. One parent passes a defective version of the gene to a child, leaving the child with only one healthy copy from birth. That child has a 90 percent chance of developing cancer. Often, the child will develop several different cancers during his or her lifetime.

Now, back to elephants. The fact elephants are less likely to die of cancer than humans is striking, for two reasons. First, the more cells an animal has, the more likely it should be one would turn cancerous.

Elephants live as long as humans do, so elephants should be much more likely than humans to die of cancer, because they’ve got so many more potentially cancerous cells than we do. But, in fact, they’re less likely. That’s puzzling.

The research team found one possible answer. Elephants have 40 copies of the TP53 tumor suppressor gene, whereas we humans have just two. TP53 kicks into action when a cell turns cancerous. The scientists demonstrated this by exposing the elephants’ cells (placed in a laboratory dish) to radiation.

Radiation causes mutations that activate an oncogene, or inactivate a tumor suppressor gene, and turn a cell cancerous.

When this happens to an elephant’s cells, the TP53 gene causes the cancerous cell to “commit suicide”: It dies before it has a chance to divide uncontrollably.

What scientists have learned about the forces that cause cancer to start, and the forces that try to protect against a growing cancer, already has led to improved diagnosis and treatment of some cancers.

If scientists are encouraged and funded to pursue curious questions – such as why elephants are less likely to die of cancer than we are – we’ll learn even more.

My husband and I have a 22-year-old son who has moved back home due to his relocating. His girlfriend of six months has done some suspicious and devious things.

We have tried to overlook them, but the latest involves a car our son asked us to sell her because she was in a bind because of some stupid financial decisions she had made.

We felt sorry for her, so we sold her the car for less than half of what we could have gotten on a trade-in since we were going to buy a newer car. Now, one month later, she has taken the car and traded it in on a different one, no doubt gaining the extra equity. I’m angry to the point I no longer want her in my house.

Are we wrong to feel taken advantage of?

I would add we always have tried to help our only son as much as we can. The result has been we have been taken advantage of or not treated the way we think a son should treat parents who are not exactly well off.

While you can’t do anything about the past, that doesn’t mean you can’t open your eyes and watch out for yourselves in the future. If your son is planning to move the girlfriend in with you, put a stop to it now. If you don’t, I predict you’ll be taken advantage of until they move out – which might not be for the foreseeable future.

Three no-trump would typically include an extra high card, perhaps the club queen, a slightly stronger (or longer) diamond suit and often only a singleton heart. Now North understandably passed, although if he had known about the doubleton support opposite, he would have retreated to four hearts. (See tomorrow’s column.)

Many players would have led the spade three, fourth-highest from the longest and strongest. However, then declarer would have had no trouble.

He would have won with dummy’s queen, perhaps tested the diamonds to check that they were running, and driven out the spade ace to establish nine tricks: two spades, six diamonds and one club.

Instead, somehow West came up with the inspired club 10! South covered with dummy’s jack and took East’s queen with his ace. Then, when declarer led a low spade, West shot in with the spade ace and continued with the club eight to pin South’s seven. Now the contract went down two, the defenders taking one spade, one heart and four clubs. South had no chance.
