JOLIET – The Joliet City Council on Tuesday said no to DriveTime.

The council’s rejection of a plan to put a DriveTime dealership on North Larkin Avenue marked the second time two neighborhood groups have blocked a company specializing in selling used cars to people with bad credit.

The council voted, 6-2, to deny a special-use permit needed for the business despite a case made by attorneys representing Arizona-based DriveTime.

“This is not another used-car dealership,” said attorney Michael R. Martin, addressing the neighborhood group’s argument that Joliet has too many used-car dealers. “It doesn’t look like a used-car dealership. It looks like a new-car dealership.”

Martin pointed to $750,000 in improvements planned for the old Century Tile store at 1395 N. Larkin Ave., which was vacated last year.

Attorney Michael Martin, father of Michael R. Martin, questioned a list of 41 used-car dealerships that one neighborhood group produced at the Monday workshop meeting.

“Our estimate is $12 million in sales,” Martin said. “That’s $840,000 in sales tax. ... That generates a lot of revenue. You’re sitting on a site that’s vacant, and it’s not going to get filled.”

The opposition was led by the Cathedral Area Preservation Association and the St. Pat’s Neighborhood Association. The two groups in 2012 successfully opposed a CarHop, which is a Minnesota-based business that also specializes in sales to customers with credit problems.

CarHop was looking at a site on West

Jefferson Street that is on the edge of both neighborhoods. This time the two groups went outside their immediate area to oppose the DriveTime project. In both cases, the groups questioned the lending practices of the companies.

Councilmen Terry Morris and Pat Mudron were the two dissenting votes against the motion to deny the permit to DriveTime.

Monopole rejected

The council also turned down a proposal to build a cellphone monopole, another project opposed by city residents.

It was the second time the council rejected the 120-foot monopole proposed by SBA Towers IX and Verizon Wireless for 100 S. 129th Infantry Drive, a site outside the Knights of Columbus Hall.

The council in March 2015 rejected the monopole after hearing from residents from neighboring Golf View Estates and Inwood Terrace. At that time, the city suggested putting the monopole at nearby Memorial Stadium. SBA came back to the Infantry Drive site after the Joliet Park District rejected the stadium proposal.

The council voted, 7-1, to deny a special-use permit for the monopole with Mudron dissenting.

River Road to close for most of June

River Road will be shut down between Fort Beggs Drive and Renwick Road from Wednesday to June 30 to allow for work on a pedestrian bridge over the DuPage River, according to a village news release.

Scott Threewitt, lead engineer for the Plainfield Public Works Department, said the work is being done in June to align with the summer break for Plainfield Central High School, which is near the intersection of River Road and Fort Beggs Drive.

Detour directions

Drivers seeking to detour around River Road during the closure are advised to take Fort Beggs Drive or Renwick Road east and then travel north or south on Route 59.

Chief of Police John Konopek said, adding that officers will monitor for speed limit compliance the stretches of Fort Beggs Drive and Renwick Road between River Road and Route 59 that will serve as detour options.

Threewitt said about 3,500 vehicles use the affected section of River Road daily when school is not in session.

and local access for River Road residents will be maintained during the closure.

The road will be used to stage equipment for the pedestrian bridge project and facilitate construction of the bridge’s foundation, Threewitt said.

The bridge will be located where the Fort Beggs Bike Trail breaks from River Road at Renwick Community Park, and will extend across the river to connect with the trail on the river’s west side.

The bridge is part of the effort between the village and the Plainfield Park District to fill gaps in the local pedestrian trail network, Threewitt said.

District Director of Parks and Planning Jennifer Rooks-Lopez said, the about $800,000 bridge project is being funded by a federal grant from the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program.

Torch on its way to event in Bloomington-Normal

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – There were fewer police officers carrying a torch this year, but those who did Tuesday were committed.

“Our leg is one of the longest, about twice what the other departments have today,” Joliet police officer Anthony Lakota said.

Lakota was one of the bicycle officers escorting the dozen officers and supporters in the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics.

The torch started Tuesday morning with Bolingbrook police officers and was passed to Romeoville officers, handed off to Lockport police and Illinois Department of Corrections guards from Stateville, who escorted it to Crest Hill.

Crest Hill officers then carried the torch to St. Joe’s Park, where Joliet took over about 12:15 p.m.

“Some road construction on the earlier sections really slowed us down,” said Joliet officer Dwayne English, who coordinates the participation of local departments and ran Tuesday. “There were some gaps [between runners] starting on Route 53 that a car could’ve easily pulled out and caused some problems, so we had to stop so everyone could catch up.”

Joliet police carried the torch for nearly 10 miles from St. Joe’s to Broadway, over the Ruby Street Bridge and south to downtown, where they took a lap around City Hall, earning cheers from some city staffers gathered on the sidewalks and English’s son Cole, a Special Olympics athlete. Back on Jefferson Street, the police carried the torch east to Route 30.

“Pacing yourself is the key to doing this and the Cass Street Railroad Bridge – that’s the real test,” officer Kyle Bledsoe said. Called “Heartbreak Hill” during prior torch runs, the steep incline is a rough way to mark the final third of Joliet’s leg.

“You’ve been running on asphalt, and you can feel it,” said Bledsoe, a Torch Run veteran.

Bledsoe, English, Lakota and other officers all agreed Tuesday’s weather – clear and mild – was ideal for the run.

Lawsuit alleges park district tolerated harassment

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A federal lawsuit alleges a work environment at the Joliet Park District in which the former executive director openly made lewd comments, had “a reputation for pursuing sexual relationships with subordinate female employees,” and did so with the knowledge of top supervisors and even park Dominic board members.

The lawsuit filed Egizio last week creates new problems for former Executive Director Dominic Egizio, alleging he made comments about the size of his genitals and panties, as well as behavior that amounted to stalking an employee.

But it also says Egizio, who is now the Midlothian Park District director of parks and recreation, made lewd comments about female employees “in the presence of supervisors and at least one board member.”

The lawsuit alleges that the park board at one point told Egizio to “dis-

tance himself” from Jeanetta Matichak, the former fitness instructor who filed the lawsuit. When Egizio “flatly refused,” the lawsuit states, the board ended up taking action against Matichak, who was placed on unpaid medical leave.

Board President Glen Marcum would not say much about the lawsuit. But he did say Tuesday that he believed the board “handled it right.”

“As soon as a complaint was filed, we put Dominic on administrative leave and started an investigation,” he said.

Egizio was put on administrative leave in August 2015 after Matichak’s lawyer contacted the park district and gave notice of a possible lawsuit. That lawsuit, filed Friday, states that the board had heard of the inappropriate relationship before then and that Marcum had even discussed “the rumors” with Egizio in March or April of 2015.

“He told Egizio to quiet his people and put a stop to the rumors,” the lawsuit states. “The Board President did not stop compelling sex with a subordinate, nor did the board conduct any investigation.”

“I think we handled it right,” he said. “Until there’s a formal complaint, there’s not much you can do about hearsay. If a complaint had been filed in 2011, we would have put him on administrative leave and done an investigation in 2011.”

The lawsuit states that the harassment began soon after Matichak was hired in 2011.

It also states that Egizio has pursued sexual relationships with at least three other subordinate female employees over a period of 10 years before Matichak was hired.

Attorney Robin Potter, who represents Matichak, said she has talked with other female employees from the park district.

Potter said the board “basically terminated” Matichak.

“She’s on unpaid leave,” Potter said. “They refused to accommodate her with a paid leave.”

Potter said Matichak’s job is not being held for her. Matichak has been on medical leave since May 2015 suffering “extreme trauma and a breakdown requiring hospitalization” because of Egizio’s actions, the lawsuit states.

Matichak had not filed a formal complaint before going on leave, Potter said. But park commissioners “were clearly notified that there was a problem. There was discrimination.

There was rampant harassment and discrimination,” Potter said.

The lawsuit seeks compensatory and punitive damages without setting the amounts. It also calls for the appointment of a monitor to conduct sexual harassment training and discipline any employees who engaged in or tolerated sexual harassment.

New Executive Director Tom Carstens said the park district does have a sexual harassment policy and does sexual harassment training.

Carstens said the lawsuit “is something that needs to be addressed. We know that. We’re going to move forward.”

Lincoln-Way group: Lawsuit to prevent North closure worth the effort

fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Legal efforts from a residents group to keep Lincoln-Way North High School open weren’t successful – but the group’s founder doesn’t regret them.

“I think it was definitely worth it.

It was definitely worth all the hard work,” said Liz Sands, founder of Lincoln-Way Area Taxpayers Unite. “If you don’t try, you don’t know. From that perspective, I don’t regret it at all.”

LWATU and other plaintiffs – the majority of whom are North parents – initiated a lawsuit Dec. 29 against the District 210 board to prevent any of its four school buildings, including North, from closing after board members decided in a 5-2 vote to shutter North as a way to resolve the district’s spiraling financial problems.

Critical of how the district has managed its finances and strong in its stance that operating all four schools was possible, LWATU gathered community support to challenge the board’s decision in a legal fight that stretched about five months.

“I think it was definitely worth it. It was definitely worth all the hard work. If you don’t try, you don’t know. From that perspective, I don’t regret it at all.”

Lincoln-Way Area Taxpayers Unite founder However, Will County Judge Roger Rickmon dismissed most of the group’s lawsuit in March, one of the tougher cases he said he had to decide. He then dismissed a temporary restraining order to prevent North’s closing and rejected subpoenas that would have brought district officials to court to testify.

On Monday, he dismissed the group’s second amended complaint.

Rickmon ruled in a two-page court order that assuming the information in the amended complaint was true and drawing all reasonable inferences in a light most favorable to the plaintiffs, he didn’t find the board’s decision

to close North was arbitrary or capricious.

He also found the board’s decision did not violate any rights held by the plaintiffs under the due process clause of the Illinois Constitution.

While district officials said in a statement sent Monday afternoon they were pleased with the outcome, LWATU’s attorney Stephen Eberhardt said he thought Rickmon’s ruling should have contained more substance. Sands also said she didn’t think there was much to it.

“The judge reaches conclusions without any explanation of how he came to those bottom-line conclusions,” Eberhardt said.

Sands said she doesn’t know what the next steps would be for LWATU as its members haven’t yet spoken with Eberhardt. Nothing will change in terms of holding district officials accountable, she said.

LWATU has gathered funds for its causes and the lawsuit. The group is not disclosing its finances and Sands said she didn’t know how much has been raised thus far. LWATU’s donation webpage showed at least $15,662

raised as of Tuesday afternoon, which does not account for donation amounts not listed.

Superintendent Scott Tingley said Tuesday the district will have to pay $25,000 in legal bills, which is the deductible amount as the district is insured.

The pace of the lawsuit has been a source of frustration for LWATU, as North is slated to close in the fall and Rickmon delivered his order after classes and the graduation ceremony for North ended.

Eberhardt said he thought purposeful steps were taken on the part of the district to delay the lawsuit as much as possible.

In an emailed response, William Gleason, District 210’s attorney, said Eberhardt’s assertion is misguided because the defendants regularly filed pleadings earlier than required by Illinois Supreme Court rules and orders of the court.

“The defendants’ only ‘tactic’ in this case was to attack the legal validity of a lawsuit filed against them promptly and through the proper procedures set forth by law,” he stated.

Gompers schoolmates organize vigil for Joliet siblings If you go

Mckenzie and Anthony – who both attended Gompers Junior High School with the Arroyo siblings – hope to help their fellow students and other community members heal at a vigil to honor the memory of Abigail and Eder, both of Joliet.

Mckenzie was in sixth grade at Gompers with Eder, who was to attend seventh grade at Thompson Instructional Center.

Mckenzie and Anthony, who will start the new school year at Joliet Central High School, want to show Abigail and Eder’s family that the sister and brother are loved and missed by many, Melissa said.

Lone Star ownership talks tentative plans to reopen “It would sort of be like going home for everyone.”

aschier@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – The Lone Star Restaurant and Lounge building in Channahon was demolished this week, more than six months after it was damaged in a fire.

Now the site’s future remains unclear, but Lone Star ownership indicated Tuesday that there is hope for some sort of reopening.

Demolition of the structure began Monday and was expected to be completed Tuesday, Channahon Village President Missey Moorman Schumacher said.

Lone Star owner Themis Sparagis said there are tentative plans for a restaurant at the 25208 W. Eames St. site, but stressed nothing is final.

“We’re going to put something there,” he said.

Sparagis thanked the community members who visited the site to offer support during the demolition.

“This is my blood,” he said.

Moorman Schumacher said that since the fire, she has been frequently asked about the fate of the restaurant,

The fire occurred Oct. 7, when fire-

fighters spent about two hours battling the blaze, which caused a corner of the building’s roof to collapse and left smoke, heat and water damage throughout the structure.

Channahon Fire Chief John Petrakis said Tuesday that the estimated total loss from the fire was $1 million and that investigators determined the incident was caused by workers on the roof of the restaurant using torches near flammable material.

Since the fire, Moorman Schumacher said the Sparagises have been working with insurance representatives to assess coverage and aid.

Money donated after the incident through the M&M Bank in Channahon and the online fundraising platform GoFundMe went to the restaurant’s employees, not the Sparagis family, Moorman Schumacher said.

LOCAL BRIEF NEW LENOX – An elderly woman drove into the side of an IHOP on Tuesday in New Lenox, damaging the structure.

New Lenox Deputy Chief Robert Pawlisz said the incident occurred about noon, when the driver mistook the accelerator for the brake while parking, jumped the

curb and struck the restaurant at 411 E. Lincoln Highway, cracking the facade.

No one was injured and it is unlikely the woman will be cited, Pawlisz said, although the New Lenox Police Department may contact the Office of the Secretary of State about assessing her driving abilities.

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A man whose aggravated battery conviction for a 2009 Mokena bar fight was overturned should be entitled to get back the $43,000 he paid in restitution, his attorney said.

Joseph P. Messina, 27, made a brief court appearance Tuesday with his new defense attorney, Jeff Tomczak.

Messina is facing another trial for allegedly punching Eric J. Bartels outside 191 South bar and grill on July 25, 2009. Bartels, who turned 33 on Tuesday, fractured his skull on the pavement and suffered a brain injury that left him paralyzed, blind and mute.

During Messina’s 2012 trial, several of his friends testified it was not Messina, but Mike Glielmi, another friend from the group that was out that night celebrating Messina’s birthday, who punched Bartels. Glielmi exercised his Fifth Amendment right not to testify.

Prosecutors contended Messina straddled Bartels on the ground, hit

him a second time and raised his arms in victory.

On the day Judge Sarah Jones found Messina guilty during a bench trial, the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office emailed her a copy of a news release on the verdict. Jones said she did not read the release, but did not inform the defense she’d received it until sentencing two months later, which the appellate court ruled was improper procedure.

Messina was sentenced to 30 months of probation and was ordered to pay restitution, which was served and paid before the appellate court decision. Tomczak has the case because both of Messina’s original attorneys, Dave Carlson and Ken Zelazo, have since become Will County judges.

Tomczak told Judge Carmen Goodman he plans to file a motion to have the restitution amount returned and wanted prosecutors to be aware of it before Messina’s bond hearing later this month. The money Messina put up for bail was also used as restitution under his original sentence.

Will County to purchase additional poll books before general election

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Will County will buy more electronic poll books in hopes of providing a smooth voting process for residents this November during the general election.

“We don’t want to turn voters away,” Will County Clerk Nancy Schultz Voots said. “That’s my goal.”

Schultz Voots presented Tuesday to the Will County Board’s Finance Committee an estimate from Election Systems and Software LLC for 375 poll books and necessary equipment for each that would cost $426,292. The committee approved the request.

Electronic poll books are computer tablets with voting and registration capabilities. The purchase would add one poll book to each polling site in the county. Currently, there are two poll books at each site.

“One additional poll book at each site will allow same-day registrants to go to a separate line,” Schultz Voots said.

The additional poll books were deemed necessary by the clerk’s office and the finance committee after a notso-smooth start to same-day voter registration in March’s primary election.

Schultz Voots said in May that many pre-registered voters walked away from polling places, frustrated by long lines. County Board Speaker and committee member Jim Moustis, R-Frankfort, said Tuesday that he saw in March excessive lines when making the rounds at polling places.

Election judges were also over-

whelmed by the additional responsibility and new technology used for same-day registration. Schultz Voots said Tuesday that training will be ongoing in the coming months to prepare election judges and “build their confidence” for the general election in November.

In March, state Rep. Mark Batinick said he was pushing to change the same-day registration law. Batinick, R-Plainfield, said his proposed bill – once amended – would require just one same-day registration site per township.

That would reduce the number of same-day sites from the statutorily required 300 to 24 in Will County. The remaining 276 regular polling sites would be reserved for those who registered ahead of time, he said.

But Schultz Voots said Tuesday it’s probably too late to make a change for upcoming elections.

“Other counties in the state are worried about long lines in November and are going to their respective boards to find funding,” Schultz Voots said. “The issue is these unfunded mandates.”

There are also other options to avoid lines and traffic in November.

Schultz Voots said her office on Monday received about 300 requests to vote by mail. She is encouraging voters to use this method if possible, and to register before November arrives.

She told the committee there was a 45 percent voter turnout in March, and she wants to prepare for even more voters in the November general election.

of Staff Nick Palmer said to the committee that discussions about the cost of just a sheriff’s facility started in the $15 million to $20 million range, and reached $20 million because $15 million wasn’t enough for what is needed in it.

Since then, designs for the 911 center and ETSB portions were added to the project.

“The growth in this project was dispatch and ETSB, which we agreed to as a group,” Palmer said in the meeting.

Committee Chairwoman Ragan Freitag recalled the committee asking for the project to be under $29 million, preferably even lower.

Palmer said it would’ve been beneficial to have a dollar limit from the start, and that requests have been made to

the company to pull back in an effort to keep costs down.

Dave Tkac, the Will County Executive’s deputy chief of staff, said design firm DLR Group is working toward a guaranteed max price of $29 million.

Tkac suggested reconvening to talk specifically about what costs within the project will be dedicated to each of the three wings, though the ETSB will lease its portion. The county would not buy furnishings for the 911 and ETSB portions.

As for the facility itself, the two-story building will have plenty of natural light, which is almost nonexistent in the current sheriff’s office, DLR Principal Jake Davis said. Though the sheriff’s office, 911 and ETSB areas will be part of

JOLIET – The Will County Board’s Capital Improvements Committee on Tuesday viewed a presentation on the proposed Will County Sheriff’s Facility, now with an adjoining dispatch center.

But several committee members expressed reservations that the estimated cost of the project may be getting too expensive – in the $31 million range. Committee member Jim Moustis, R-Frankfort, wondered whether the design firm would be allowed to come to the board with a set price or whether the board would give the firm a set budget.

“We still haven’t talked about exactly where we want this budget,” Moustis said in the meeting, adding that square footage was already reduced to drop costs.

Committee Vice Chairman Mike Fricilone was concerned that $11 million could be spent on just the 911 and ETSB portions of the building.

The addition of the dispatch center came after the Will County’s 911 Board in April drafted a consolidation plan for reducing its emergency dispatch centers from six to three, in accordance with an unfunded state mandate. The final plan for consolidation is due to the state by July 1.

Under the plan, the Romeoville center, the Eastcom center in Crete and the Lincolnway center in Frankfort would likely be folded into the new facility at the Will County Sheriff’s Office. The two other operating dispatch centers in the county are the city of Joliet’s facility and the WESCOM facility built in 2014 in Plainfield.

Trustees approve new type of liquor license

Shaw Media correspondent CHANNAHON – Trustees approved at Monday’s Channahon village board meeting an ordinance that will allow restaurants to apply for a license so they can offer outdoor dining with alcoholic beverages.

The supplemental license is a new one for the village. Businesses that hold Class A, B or H liquor licenses may apply for the supplemental outdoor dining liquor license for an additional fee of $500.

Three businesses currently hold a resort license that allows outdoor dining with alcohol – Big Fish Bar and Grille, Mugz’s Hideout and The Grille Room at the golf course. But restaurants not classified with resort status have not been allowed the consideration.

The village has received requests from restaurants for the service, said Village Administrator Tom Durkin. Included in the ordinance is a closing of

the outdoor dining area of no later than 11 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 p.m. Sunday; no alcoholic beverages outside the defined outdoor dining area; and limitations on loudspeakers and sound systems.

There was quite a bit of discussion on the noise from music that might emanate from the areas. The ordinance was originally written to make sure music would not be heard more than 100 feet from the sites, but at least two trustees – Debbie Militello and Chantal Host – felt that distance was too confined to be practical. Militello thought 200 feet might be more reasonable.

In the end, the board decided that music or other amplified sound must not be able to be heard at homes that are more than 150 feet from the perimeter of the outdoor dining area.

Microbrewery interest

The village board on Monday also approved a new class of liquor license.

Class K will be issued to wineries, mi-

crobreweries and distilleries. The village has already had two requests for such a license. One is from Channahon brewers Tom Sperling, Tim Engler and Dustin Fryman, all of whom attended the board meeting.

After the meeting, the brewers said they are interesting in opening a microbrewery on Route 6 at the site of the old Enjoi Bakeshop and Café. Their plans are to brew beer and make wines.

They hope to open within the year.

A Class K license would allow the licensee to produce wine, spirits or beer only on the specified licensed premises; furnish samples for consumption; sell products by the glass or container; and sell the products produced there at other locations.

The businesses would not be allowed to sell alcoholic beverages produced by other manufacturers.

The fee for the license is the same as other Channahon liquor licenses – $1,000 per year. Hours of operation would be limited to 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.

ies, but customers would be allowed to bring in food or call in for food to be delivered.

Turtle watching

Also at Monday’s meeting, Trustee Scott McMillin offered a heads-up for those driving village roads near waterways: Watch out for turtles.

May and June is nesting season for all species of the local turtle population.

According to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Illinois turtles lay their eggs on land, even if they are water turtles. The reptiles may cross roads to lay their eggs and cross them again to get back to the water. Later, when the eggs hatch, the hatchlings may have roads to cross to get to a river or creek.

Six of the 17 Illinois turtle species are on the endangered list.

McMillin said he sees turtles slowly crossing the roads by the dozens this time of year. He’s recently seen many that have been run over by cars, as well, including a large snapping turtle.

NEW LENOX – Close to 30 high school students in Will County were awarded full scholarships to attend one of three colleges by the Give Something Back Foundation.

The nonprofit – established by a former Lockport resident – awarded freshman students in Joliet, Plainfield, Lockport and Lincoln-Way schools so they could attend Blackburn College, Lewis University or the University of St. Francis.

Receiving the scholarship was an honor for Joliet West student Kayla Robinson, who said she plans to attend Blackburn College to study journalism.

“I’m greatly honored, and I really thank God for it,” she said.

Her mother, Renita, said Kayla is a “good student and person, period” who since the fifth or sixth grade has maintained a GPA between 3.5 and 4.0.

“She’s still keeping that status. I’m just really, really proud of her and I know she will go far,” Renita said.

Seven other Joliet West students also were recipients of the scholarships, as well as three Joliet Central students. At Lincoln-Way District 210, four students from Central and two from West were awarded the scholarships.

For Plainfield District 202, eight total students at North, South, East and Central high schools earned the scholarships. Lockport District 205 had two recipients.

The Give Something Back Foundation provides mentors and scholarships to help Pell Grant-eligible students attend college and graduate in four years debt-free, according to its website.

Students had to complete applications, obtain school and community recommendations and participate in interviews to be eligible.

To continue in the scholarship program, students must maintain a B average throughout high school, participate in a mentoring program and attend workshops the organization sponsors.

Rabid bat discovered Illinois lawmakers seek to in Crete Public Library curb heroin, opioid crisis The ASSOCIATED PRESS

The HERALD–NEWS CRETE – A rabid bat was found dead Thursday at the Crete Public Library in Crete, according to a news release from the Office of Will County Executive Larry Walsh Sr. The bat tested positive for rabies Friday, becoming Will County’s second confirmed case of wildlife rabies for 2016. The first case was May 5 in Braidwood. So far this year, there have been 15 confirmed cases across Illinois.

The bat was found in a locked, empty meeting room at the library.

Library officials said there was no known human contact with the bat, the news release stated.

Rabies is a usually fatal viral disease that attacks the central nervous system. The virus is present in the saliva, brain tissue and spinal fluid of infected warm-blooded animals.

To avoid rabies, residents are ad-

vised to not feed, touch or adopt wild animals or strays; be sure dogs and cats are up-to-date on rabies vaccinations; not allow pets to roam free; not attract wild animals to homes or yards; encourage children to immediately tell an adult if they are bitten or scratched by an animal; and report all animal bites to local animal control.

If a wild animal comes on your property, let it wander away. Bring children and pets indoors and alert neighbors. If the animal is acting abnormally, contact animal control.

July, August and September are prime months for area bat exposures. Report any contact with a bat, or other warm-blooded animals to animal control as soon as possible.

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois lawmakers have passed legislation seeking to curb the state’s heroin and opioid crisis.

Legislation designed to battle addiction and stem deaths from overdoses was passed in the state House unanimously and had four votes in opposition when it was passed by the Senate. The Springfield bureau of Lee Enterprises newspapers reports part of the bill was vetoed by Gov. Bruce Rauner, but legislators from both parties voted to override his alterations.

The bill was championed by state Rep. Lou Lang, D-Skokie.

“I had read one too many reports about heroin taking over Illinois,” Lang said.

In preparing the legislation, Lang worked with Rep. John Anthony, R-Joliet.

“We’ve moved from crisis to epidemic,” said Anthony, who is a former Kendall County sheriff’s deputy.

Heroin has become a scourge throughout the state. In Will County, there have been 30 heroin-related deaths so far in 2016, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office. There

were 53 heroin-related deaths in 2015, which tied 2012 for the all-time high for heroin-related deaths in the county during a calendar year.

The law’s provisions include allowing trained pharmacists to provide the anti-overdose drug naloxone without a prescription; and requiring fire departments, law enforcement agencies and emergency medical service providers to possess anti-overdose drugs.

The law also requires that private insurers provide coverage for anti-overdose medications, and that hospitals, coroners and medical examiners gather and report data on opioid and heroin overdose deaths and treatments. Also included in the law is the expansion of drug courts that give an option aside from prison for low-level drug offenders, as well as of Illinois’ Medicaid program to cover every type of medication-assisted treatment that has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval for opioid and alcohol dependence.

Many of the bill’s provisions are still being put into effect, with the legislation affecting several state agencies.

Born: Nov. 15, 1919; in Frankfort Died: June 6, 2016; in Peotone

Alice K. Bettenhausen, age 96, of Peotone, passed away on Monday, June 6, 2016, at Riverside Senior Life Community in Bourbonnais.

She was born on Nov. 15, 1919, in Frankfort, the daughter of the late William and Elizabeth (Baumgartner) Wischover. Alice married the late Lloyd A. Bettenhausen on Oct. 16, 1940, in Frankfort. He passed away on April 6, 1991.

She was a homemaker, a member of St. Peter’s United Church of Christ in Frankfort, was past president of the church women’s fellowship and treasurer of the church council.

She also served as treasurer of KWIL and was a member of the Will County Homemakers Extension. She enjoyed traveling, playing cards and was a sports fanatic.

She is survived by her son and daughterin-law, David and Marla Bettenhausen of Peotone; two grandchildren, Tammy (Phil) Cowger and Tom (Courtney) Bettenhausen, both of Peotone; and five great-grandchildren, Dakota and Mykayla Cowger and Michael, Kiersten and Brooke Bettenhausen. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a sister, Edith Warning.

Visitation will be held at the Fedde-Helfrich-Cross Funeral Home in Peotone on Friday, June 10, 2016, from 3 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 11, 2016, at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, 12 W. Sauk Trail, Frankfort, at 11 a.m., Pastor Mark Milligan officiating.

MARY C. FAZIO Mary C. Fazio (nee Carugati), age 91, entered into Eternal Life on Thursday, June 2, 2016, with her family by her side.

Mary is survived by her loving children, Roy, Donald, Natale (Lisa) and Mary Jo Fazio; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Preceded in death by her husband Natale Fazio (2013); and her son, Michael Fazio.

Mary was a lifelong parishioner of the Church of St. Anthony and was very involved in the CCW and other church activities. She was an active member of the Joliet Moose Lodge #300. Mary was always the life of the party, lighting up a room with her contagious smile and putting others before herself. She devoted her life to her family and was a loving wife, a cherished mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Mary will be truly missed by all who knew her.

Marko Babic, 87, of Crest Hill, died Sunday, June 5, 2016, after a brief illness.

Marko was born in Sveti Rok, Croatia, but was forced to leave at the end of World War II. After a few years in refugee camps in Italy, he came to the United States in 1949. He lived first in Rock Springs, Wyoming, where he worked for a time as a cook in a coal-mining camp, and then settled in the Joliet area.

In 1957, he married the former Mary Dianni, who survives him. In July they would have celebrated their 59th anniversary.

Marko was employed for 35 years by U.S. Steel and, later, the city of Crest Hill.

He was a founding member and longtime pillar of the Croatian Cultural Club, to which he remained dedicated throughout his life.

Most Friday nights he and Mary could be found there, enjoying friends, polka music and parsley potatoes. A devout Catholic, Marko was a parishioner of St. Anne’s Catholic Church for many decades.

Marko loved to putter around the house; there were few spaces he couldn’t improve with a hook, shelf, fan or clamp. In euchre, he took no prisoners, and in chess, he routinely put his youngest daughter into checkmate within five moves. At home he cooked, cleaned and shopped with gusto. He grew tomatoes, string beans and roses. He spoke three languages and liked to discuss history, follow the news and talk politics, always ending with a friendly handshake. After the adversity of his younger years, he built a full life in a new country. He helped his neighbors in any way he could, and all who knew him experienced his warmth and kindness. He will be deeply missed.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Dujo and Josip of Joliet; and siblings George, Ivka, Ankica, and Madza, all of Croatia.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by children, James (Mary) of Berwyn, JoAnn (CJ Braaten) of Minneapolis, Mark of Aurora, Dan of Brooklyn, NY, and Mary Jean (Lou Rosenfeld) of Brooklyn, NY; grandchildren, Joseph, Anne, Nicholas and Max Babic, Jacob and Marco Braaten and Iris and Nathaniel Rosenfeld; and numerous nieces and nephews.

HELEN KACHEL Born: Dec. 6, 1921 Died: June 4, 2016

Helen Kachel (nee Gerl), died June 4, 2016, at the wonderful Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home.

Born to Edward and Mary Gerl on Summit Street in Joliet on Dec. 6, 1921. She was one of eight siblings, Josephine, Marie, Bernice, Dorothy, John, Leone and “Sonny”; Leone survives.

She loved to share memories of her early life, the Depression, and walking every day to JTHS, graduating with honors in 1939. She worked through WWII in local businesses, renowned for her lightning typing and shorthand skills. She retired as executive secretary at Fleishman’s Distillery in Plainfield. She was married for 46 years to her husband, James. She lost him, and the last of the three homes he built for her, in the 1990 Plainfield tornado.

She was a loving and doting mother to her only son, “Jimmy,” and his wife, Kathy. She treasured her grandchildren, Meredith and Collin (who shared Helen’s birthday), and Collin’s wife, Dana. She adored her great-grandchildren, Lucien and Astrid. She’ll be missed by her special in-laws, Larry and Judy Kachel. She was a favorite aunt to many nieces and nephews.

She was a fierce friend, a Bears fan, a crossword enthusiast and a lover of music and laughter. She will be fondly remembered as elegant, in charge and generous. Helen loved great food, long telephone calls and a good joke.

She never had a hair out of place. She spent a lifetime doing with less to give her family more, a legacy that will surely be passed down from one generation to the next.

Peace at last, now in a better place.

Friends and family are invited to a luncheon celebration of Helen’s life at Al’s Steak House, her favorite restaurant, on Friday, June 10, 2016, at 11:30 a.m.

was born Jan. 9, 1965, at St Joseph Hospital in Joliet. She graduated from Joliet West High School, and worked for various veterinarians here and in Utah until her health declined. She loved animals.

Jane is survived by her loving parents, Francis E. “Frank” and Elaine M. Kane; two brothers Mike of Calera, Alabama, and Don of Montana.

She was preceded in death by her sister Kathy Hughes; and her grandparents.

The family would especially like to thank Dr. Garanera for the many years of compassionate care given to our Janet. Thank you to the wonderful caregivers Margie, Hope, Dylan and Anita, as well as Joliet Area Community Hospice, which is the jewel of the Joliet community. They were remarkable in the care give to our daughter, God bless them all.

Per her wishes cremation rites were accorded. A memorial service will be held at the Woodlawn Funeral Home in Joliet on Wednesday June 8, 2016, from 3 to 7 p.m. Burial will be private at St John’s Cemetery in Cullom.

Born: Jan. 7, 1929; in Denver Died: March 31, 2016; in Coral Springs, FL Helen Kelly, longtime Joliet resident, passed away on March 31, 2016, at age 90 in Coral Springs, Florida, where she has resided since 2009.

Helen, the first of four daughters, was born to Max and Deva Groner Jan. 7, 1929, in Denver. She grew up in Downers Grove. After graduating high school in 1944, she attended training to be an aircraft instrument repair technician in Miami.

She then moved with her family to Long Beach, California, where she met her future husband of 55 years, Francis J. Kelly, a World War II Air Force veteran, returning from Burma. Helen and Fran made their home in Joliet, where they lived for 35 years and raised seven children. Helen worked at Caterpillar Joliet for 10 years before retiring and moving to Arizona. During their retirement, Helen and Fran traveled frequently throughout the U.S. and Europe.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Francis (2009); son, David (1972); sister, Doris Piper, (2014); and granddaughter, Trisha Kelly-Waln (2015).

She is survived by her daughters, Deva Kelly (Michael Fiddes) and Susan (Carl) Schwab; and sons, Frank (Pat) Kelly, Dr. Michael (Darlene) Kelly, James (Dr. Arlene) Kelly, George (Deidre) Kelly; sisters, Maxine Pitts and Nan Morgan; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

John will always be remembered as a practical thinking man, who you could rely on for straightforward advice and a helping hand whenever needed.

He loved his family and country and will be missed sorely by his loved ones. He enjoyed bowling, a good laugh and a good drink.

DORIS MERRICK Doris Marian Jahnke Merrick passed away peacefully on June 5, 2016, at the age of 88, when she was called home to her Lord in heaven.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Loretta and Edward Jahnke; her sister Lois Jahnke Tieman; and her beloved husband, George Marshall Merrick Jr. Doris was born in Joliet. She graduated from Joliet Township High School, and married her high school sweetheart at St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church on Sept. 18, 1949. Doris and George moved to Orange, CA, in 1966, where Doris has lived ever since. She pursued a career in education and worked at Nohl Canyon Elementary School in OUSD for 25 years. She delighted in watching her students grow and achieve. In addition to her love of children, she was an avid bridge player. She was especially fond of her bridge friends and her friends from St. Paul’s. They were a dear part of her life.

Doris is survived is by her brother-in-law, Robert (Rolena) Merrick of Mokena; her daughters, Connie Jo (Michael) Robinson and Robyne (Philip) Kajszo; and her son, George (Natalie) Merrick. Raymond A. Likar, 74, of Palatka, FL, passed away on May 23, 2016, at Crestwood Nursing Home following a courageous battle with an extended illness.

Clinton claims historic victory The ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK – Claiming her place in history, Hillary Clinton declared victory Tuesday night in her bruising battle for the Democratic presidential nomination, becoming the first woman to lead a major American political party and then immediately taking aim at Republican Donald Trump.

“Tonight’s victory is not about one person,” Clinton said. “It belongs to generations of women and men who struggled and sacrificed and made this moment possible.”

Clinton spoke at an emotional rally in Brooklyn, eight years to the day after she ended her first failed White House run. She had already secured the delegates needed for the nomination, according to an Associated Press tally, but added to her totals with victories in New Jersey and several other states.

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, Clinton’s only remaining rival, has insisted he still has a narrow path to the nomination. Still, Clinton made a direct appeal to his supporters, recalling the raw emotions of her own supporters when she lost to Barack Obama in the 2008 Democratic primary.

Kathleen M. Quinn (nee Kustusch) “Kay,” age 69, of Shorewood, passed away peacefully at home, Monday, June 6, 2016, with her family by her side.

Born Nov. 1, 1946, in Evergreen Park, she was the daughter of Gus and Helen (Gaynor) Kustusch. Kay worked over 25 years as a closing secretary for Spring Realty and Sharp Homes before retiring in 2006.

Kay was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, and a former member of the Church of St. Jude, where she was very active in all aspects of St. Jude School, including serving as past president of the school board. She was also an active supporter of Centro Santa Catalina, a faith-based community for the welfare of economically poor women and children founded by her late sister, Sr. Donna.

Her life revolved around her family. She loved watching her grandchildren grow up and lead active lives. She was devoted to her inseparable best friend and husband, Jack, and missed him since he passed 19 years ago.

Kay also loved traveling with her sister, her

time with friends at the Wilmington Recreation Club, her lunch group, and more recently enjoyed watching professional golf. Surviving are her children, John (Alex) Quinn of Shorewood, Katie (Ed) Michel, Maura (Don) Williams and Kevin (Amanda) Quinn, all of Joliet; nine grandchildren, Colleen, Shannon and Sean Quinn, Kyle, Paige and Danny Michel, Abby and Maggie Williams and T. Dad’s parenting prepared me for future endeavors

SPRINGFIELD – As Father’s Day approaches, I’ve been reflecting a bit more on my Dad, who died last August.

Dad wasn’t the kind of person whose idea of father/son time was playing catch in the yard or going to the bowling ally.

Parenting to him involved teaching his children to work.

Both of my parents had grown up poor – in homes lacking running water and electricity – and my Dad feared his children never would value work the way he did.

I remember, when I was 6 or 7, holding the flashlight as he repaired a truck engine, helped a cow give birth or repaired a sink drain.

Being a bit of a hyperactive youngster, the flashlight beam would wander and Dad would holler.

He didn’t want lazy kids.

In fact, when I turned 11, I was expected to start my own business.

I traveled around the dairy farms of Knox County and bought a half-dozen newborn calves for $20 apiece (my folks gave me a startup loan).

I was expected to feed the calves before the school bus arrived each morning and again when I returned home in the evening.

Every morning, I found myself mixing milk replacement formula into buckets in my basement and carrying the buckets to a nearby pasture where the calves would nurse large rubber teats that extended from each pail.

(In case you are wondering, dairy calves drink formula because humans drink their mother’s milk).

The hungry calves would see me with three containers in each hand and race to see who would get fed first. Inevitably, some of the milk would end up on my jeans and some manure on my shoes.

But I wasn’t the only farm kid who boarded the school bus that way.

I both loved and hated those calves.

They would come when they were called and liked to be petted, and scratched behind their ears. But they were the reason I had to get up early when most of my friends were asleep. They expected to be fed even when I didn’t feel like working.

When most of my classmates were more concerned about box scores on the sports section, I was examining livestock prices on the business page.

The U.S. Census Bureau says one-third of children today grow up without a father present. That makes me sad. My Dad wasn’t just present; he was omnipresent.

VIEWS Scott Reeder In the evening, he would drill me about the costs of my inputs: hay, milk formula, buckets and bedding. And we would discuss projected earnings. I could look up in the Galesburg Register-Mail how much farmers were being paid for beef each day.

But I worry that many youngsters today never have the opportunity to experience work. A Northeastern University study found that the number of 16- to 19-year-olds with summer jobs dropped from 52 percent in 1999 to 32 percent in 2013.

But I don’t need a university study to figure that out. I see lawn services mowing my neighbors’ yards. Why aren’t teenagers knocking on their doors offering to do a better job for less?

No one is teaching them to.

I can’t help but smile at the thought of my shy fifth-grade self approaching a neighbor about why he ought to buy one of my bull calves to service his heifers – because it came from a “remarkably good” blood line.

I remember the rush of pride when I received my check in the mail.

My hard work had paid off.

Of course the real benefit of this experience was what I learned about responsibility, planning and perseverance.

Teenagers who don’t work are at a disadvantage because they aren’t developing the workplace skills expected when they will enter full-time employment later in life.

I’m reminded of that daily. Two months ago, I made the jump to become self-employed and am working full time writing a book. Like taking care of those calves when I was 11, it is a labor of love. But it is labor nonetheless.

I’m writing and reporting, developing marketing plans, and learning the ins and outs of a new business. My best preparation for this endeavor didn’t come from professors in college and graduate school or my decades in newspaper newsrooms.

It came from my father.

I only wish I could tell him, “Thank you.”

We’re constantly surrounded by it, and it provides refreshment, whether it’s a cold glass with ice that we drink, or a pool or lake we jump into on a hot day.

But it also can be hazardous – even when safety measures are in place.

We sadly saw in the span of a week the water-related deaths of three people in Will and Grundy counties: Joliet siblings 12-yearold Eder and 13-year-old Abigail Arroyo on Memorial Day when they fell into the Kankakee River near a dam at South Island Park in Wilmington, and Henry L. Craig, 70, of Joliet who died May 26 after he fell into the water while fishing in the Mazon Creek in Morris.

Safety around water should be paramount. Warning signs are good, but aren’t likely to stymie the curiosity of children who, when they think of water, are probably focused only on the fun they have in it. And no matter how careful we are with our kids, no parent can keep his or her eye on a child every second of the day.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than 3,500 people die from unintentional, non-boating-related drownings each year in the United States, about 10 deaths a day. One in five

of those victims were children 14 and younger.

The family of the Arroyo children have asked for additional safety measures, such as a fence on each side of the dam to prevent children from getting close to the edge, more warning signs and a “do not cross” line to prevent the tragedy from happening again. In places where there is known danger, such as the dam, those should be considered.

We all personally can take steps to be safe around water.

The American Red Cross offers numerous tips on water safety, including to never swim alone; swim in designated areas supervised by lifeguards; ensure everyone in the family learns how to swim; and for young children or inexperienced swimmers to wear life jackets around water.

The organization also stresses the need to teach children to ask permission to go near water; to establish rules for each family member and enforce them; and to actively supervise children whenever around water.

It boils down to this – be safe.

Educate your family about the potential dangers. Don’t drink alcohol while swimming or boating or participating in other water-related activities. Be vigilant when near a pool, lake or river – because while we want everyone to be safe, we also know swimming, fishing and boating are among the most enjoyable parts of summer.

Slammers beat Lake Erie for fourth-straight win

cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – After recording their first series sweep of the season, the Joliet Slammers hoped to continue their momentum on Tuesday when they played host to one of the squads with the best records in the Frontier League, Lake Erie.

The Slammers jumped out to a 3-1 lead after three innings and were able maintain a lead the rest of the way as they captured a 5-2 victory over the Crushers at Silver Cross Field.

After scoring all of their runs in Sunday’s 7-3 victory over Gateway via the long ball, Joliet (12-11) went with a different approach against Lake Erie (12-8).

Their initial three runs of the contest came home on sacrifice flies. Boo Vazquez (two RBI) drove in Charlie White (3 for 4) in the first inning to tie things at 1-1.

Then in the third, Vazquez got another RBI on a sacrifice fly to bring home Phil Bates and then Carter Bell (2

for 3), the league leader in RBI, collected his 24th when his fly out brought in White to give the Slammers a 3-1 lead.

Lake Erie looked like it might have a big inning in the fifth when it loaded the bases with no outs and then Parker Norris (two hits, RBI) hit a blooper to center to make it a 3-2 game.

Slammers starter Liam O’Sullivan, who entered as one of the league leaders in ERA with a 2.11 total, recorded a strikeout and then coaxed a doubleplay ball to get out of the jam.

Joliet did revert back to the homerun ball to collect two insurance runs in the eighth, though. Marc Flores smacked a two-run homer, which scored Bell to give the Slammers a 5-2 lead.

O’Sullivan went eight innings, allowing nine hits and two runs while striking out nine to collect the victory.

Kevin McNorton gave up one hit in the ninth and picked up the save.

Lake Erie also received two hits from Connor Oliver (RBI), Carlos Avila and Max Casper, who played the last two seasons with the Slammers.

Plainfield North makes history for district VIEWS Curt Herron

Monday was a special day for the Plainfield high schools in a couple of ways.

For the first time in the district’s history, two teams were competing for the opportunity to advance to the state semifinals, and they both were doing so in the same sport.

Plainfield South was hoping to knock off two-time defending Class 4A baseball champion Providence Catholic in Champaign, while Plainfield North looked to get past St. Laurence in a 4A supersectional in Crestwood.

For a district that has only three previous state trophy winners, all of which came in bowling, it was a truly historic moment.

Coach Phil Bodine’s Cougars gave the Celtics a run for their money, grabbing a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth, but Providence answered with two runs in the bottom of that frame to claim a 4-3 win and capture its state-record 19th-consecutive postseason victory.

Konnor Ash, Gabe Wair and Trey Stewart each had two hits and drove in a run for South, which captured its first sectional championship in the sport.

And the good news for the Cougars is that they’ll return many top performers from this squad, so next season looks very promising.

Meanwhile, coach John Darlington’s Tigers were hoping to go a step further than they did a year ago when they fell, 11-5, in the same game and site to Mount Carmel.

North’s Josh Garner had three hits, including a two-run double in the first to account for the only scoring. Tyler Garrity tossed a one-hitter and struck out nine as the Tigers won 2-0.

It was sweet redemption for North, which rallied from a 5-1 deficit to Mount Carmel to force a 5-5 tie in the seventh before the Caravan scored six runs in the eighth to claim the win.

The trophy the Tigers will receive on Saturday at the finals at Silver Cross Field is not only their school’s first in any sport, but also the initial one any Plainfield program has won in an elimination tournament.

Those include Central’s softball team in 2012, which lost, 5-4, to Moline in a supersectional, and Plainfield’s 2000 football squad, which suffered its only loss by a 28-21 score to Glenbard North in the quarterfinals.

I was on hand at last year’s supersectional where North made its thrilling comeback before falling in extra innings. After seeing the disappointment on the faces of the coaches and players after the near miss and knowing the type of team the Tigers expected to field this season, it comes as no surprise they were able to pull off the historic achievement.

While some in Plainfield may be disappointed that they won’t see a North-South clash in Friday’s 3 p.m. semifinal, the consolation prize is well worth it. The Tigers will get the chance to halt Providence’s quest to become the state’s first three-time champion in baseball.

Silver Cross Field should be rocking as two Will County squads finally meet up in the semifinals.

North enters without a whole lot of pressure as it makes its state debut, while Providence will see whether it can continue its amazing postseason magic.

Coach Mark Smith’s Celtics have been great in the playoffs the past

three seasons. Of the 13 games that they’ve won in sectionals, supersectionals and state finals, 11 were by one run or came in games where only one run divided the teams going into the seventh.

The Celtics comeback kids did it again on Monday, as Jackson Dvorak had three hits and an RBI and Mike Madej added two hits and drove in a run.

And speaking of history, Lemont is in a position to capture its second state title in three years when it competes in the Class 3A finals this weekend. When coach Brian Storako’s squad won the title in 2014, it was the first boys championship for the Indians, as well as their initial title in an elimination sport, with the others coming in cheerleading.

As they did two years ago, the Indians beat De La Salle to advance, this time by a 10-4 score in Crestwood. Ryan Sublette had three hits and two RBI, while Nick Wisz and Angel Salinas also had a pair of hits and drove in two runs.

Area teams have gone 19-12 in the state semifinals, including 16-6 since 1985. With one head-to-head matchup, we’re assured of at least one team in Saturday’s finals and could have a repeat of 2014, when both Lemont and Providence won championships.

JOLIET – The hot topic of the day was weather, but the skies parted just in time for the main event, this past weekend’s Burndown at Sundown! at Route 66 Raceway.

After a couple of short delays, the weather turned beautiful with perfect conditions for drag racing. Throughout the day, fans watched the continued qualifying rounds for the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series.

But when the sun went down, the crowd saw an outstanding show featuring the following: An appearance by TJ Zizzo – The NHRA Top Fuel veteran and Illinois native, Zizzo, who tested throughout the day and made two passes in the Burndown at Sundown spectacle.

KC Jones Jet Trains and Wheelstanders – They aren’t called the world’s wildest locomotives for nothing; the Cannonball Express Jet Car, Chattanooga Choo-Choo Jet Car and Crazy Train Wheelstander ignited more fire into this year’s Burndown.

Hypersonic Jet Funny Car – Barry Richter’s jet funny car is propelled by a fire-breathing jet engine, and reached speeds approaching 280 mph in a quarter-mile.

Al Z’s Hot Blade – This hot blade jet dragster got its name from the shower of sparks it leaves in its wake.

Dave Modder’s Dragon’s Fyre – The Dragon’s Fyre Jet Truck is a 1940 Ford pickup truck powered by a General Electric J-85 after-burning turbo jet engine. The Dragon’s Fyre Jet Truck is the only one like it in the world.

As Ali’s funeral nears, Louisville remembers the Lip

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The most famous man in the world sat down in a busy airport terminal with a little girl he’d never met, and the pair played pata-cake for 10 minutes.

That was 19 years ago. Muhammad Ali was waiting for a flight in Charlotte, North Carolina, when he noticed the 3-year-old girl and offered a hug. The child’s father, Louisville Metro Police Maj. Kelly Jones, still marvels at the encounter: Ali’s massive hand clapping his daughter’s tiny one.

Such stories spread this week across the city that raised the Louisville Lip, as dozens visited memorials or waited in line for tickets to services to say a final farewell to Ali, who died Friday at 74.

They recounted brushes with him at baseball games and at the barber shop; how he held them as a baby or wrapped his giant arms around their children.

Even the tiniest moment seems tremen-

dously special to the person who experienced it. They touched The Greatest, they say. And in some way, it made them greater, too.

For 40 years, two black-and-white photos have hung on Joan Carter’s living room wall. In one, her 9-year-old daughter, her hair tied in pigtails and a spoon in her hand, looks over her shoulder as she reaches out to Ali, crouched on his knees.

The second photo captures the moment that came next: The handsome boxer swept the child up in his arms and kissed her cheek.

In October 1975, Ali stopped by the housing project where they lived in Louisville’s west end. A crowd gathered to greet him, and the thrill of seeing him in the flesh is captured on the faces in the background of Carter’s framed photos.

The girl in the picture, Cheryl Carter Daniels, said she’s told the story again and again. “I always say, ‘And we’ve got the pictures to prove it.’”

Ali was in town for a ceremony at the Muhammad Ali Center. The 15-year-old wasn’t sure whether he’d ever see him again and wanted to leave nothing unsaid. So he went up to Ali, threw his arms around him and declared, “If there’s anybody I want to be like, it’s you.”

Ali’s wife, Lonnie, noticed the boy’s handsome face.

“Doesn’t he look just like you when you were young?” She asked her husband. “He’s so pretty.”

It was Dempsey’s 50th international goal. He also scored his first at the home of the NFL’s Chicago Bears on May 28, 2005, against England.

The United States seemed to get stronger as the first half went along, and another flourish in the final minutes before halftime helped put it away.

Jones stole the ball at midfield and passed to Dempsey, who carried it deep into the Costa Rica side. The forward then nudged it back over to Jones, who shot it on the ground past a diving Pemberton in the 37th minute.

With Costa Rica looking a little ragged, the U.S. kept up the attack.

Dempsey passed to Wood in the middle, and he turned away from defender Oscar Duarte before beating Pemberton on the ground for a 3-0 lead in the 42nd minute – delighting the crowd of 39,642 on a cool, cloudy night in Chicago.

CHICAGO – Clint Dempsey had a goal and two assists, and the United States rebounded from its opening loss in Copa America with a convincing, 4-0, victory over Costa Rica on Tuesday night.

Jermaine Jones, Bobby Wood and Graham Zusi also scored as the U.S. moved into prime position to grab one of two spots in the knockout round coming out of Group A in South America’s championship. The Americans take on Paraguay in Philadelphia on Saturday night.

It was quite a response to days of questions after the U.S. allowed a goal off a corner kick and committed a costly hand ball in a 2-0 loss to Colombia on Friday night.

Costa Rica, which played a scoreless tie against Paraguay in its Copa opener on Saturday in Florida, looked sluggish for long stretches of the first half and was unable to recover. It played without key defender Kendall Waston after he got a red card in the previous game.

The loss to Colombia ramped up criticism of U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann, who said last month the Copa goal for the Americans was the semifinals.

U.S. Soccer Federation President Sunil Gulati told a group of reporters before the match that recent results for the men’s team “haven’t been what we would have hoped for, especially in the official competitions.”

But Klinsmann and his players insisted they felt pretty good in the team’s performance on Friday night in Northern California, and the coach doubled down on the positive vibe by sending out the same starters against defensive-minded Costa Rica. And it worked – in a big way.

Moments after DeAndre Yedlin’s poor clearing attempt almost set up an early goal for Costa Rica’s Joel Campbell, the Americans started to find their way.

Guilt-free dessert utilizes pear and chocolate crumble

My four daughters all have a sweet tooth, and I blame genetics. I can sidestep French fries, chips and salty stuff pretty easily, but chocolate makes me drool. So if you love sweets, at least know you are in good company.

But, healthy-eating friends, let’s have some straight talk about dessert: it’s full of sugar, which means we can’t have dessert every single time we want it.

In our house, we eat (real) dessert only on weekends. During the week, I serve plain fruit or unsweetened yogurt after dinner, saving the sweeter treats for family meals where we linger around the table, connecting.

Even weekend desserts, though, are not a free-for-all sugar-fest. I follow one simple guideline to keep my family’s sugar consumption in check: I make all our own desserts.

There are three major advantages to this rule. First, while sugar can wreak havoc on our health, weird

chemicals – fake flavors, colors, preservatives – scare me even more.

If I make the food myself, I can skip the strange ingredients I can’t pronounce, and that’s a win for our health.

Second, having to cook my own treats (usually) stops me from mindlessly eating something I brought home from the store. Permission to eat anything that is homemade is simultaneously enough freedom to indulge our cravings sometimes and enough brakes to keep us from scarfing down a random box of cookies.

Lastly, if I make the desserts myself, then I have control over the recipe.

Usually, I reduce sugar and simple carbohydrates and add protein and fiber, which all slow down the sugar rush.

For instance, this week’s pear and dark chocolate crumble turns almond flour and oats in a tasty topping that isn’t loaded with empty calories, and a tiny splash of almond extract brilliantly tricks the palate into thinking this dessert is sweeter than it is.

Splurge on some high-quality dark

chocolate chips (or just chop up a bar) – you’ll be amazed how satisfying a small bit of dark chocolate can be.

Pear and Dark Chocolate Crumble Start to finish: 1 hour Yield: 6 servings

For the filling: 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1/4 teaspoon almond extract 4 pears, peeled and diced 1 granny smith apple, peeled and diced (can substitute a fifth pear) 1 tablespoon brown sugar 1 teaspoon corn starch For the crumble topping: 1/3 cup almond flour 1/2 cup oats 1/3 cup dark chocolate chips (recommended: 63 percent cacao) 1 tablespoon brown sugar 1/4 teaspoon salt 3 tablespoons cold butter, cut into small cubes

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. In a large bowl, mix the lemon juice and almond extract. Add the fruit and toss to coat.

Sprinkle the sugar and corn starch on the pears, and stir until mixed in.

Spoon the fruit into a 1.5 or 2-quart baking dish sprayed with nonstick cooking spray.

In a small food processor, place the almond flour, oats, chocolate chips, sugar and salt.

Pulse once or twice to mix.

Top with the butter and pulse 8 or 9 times until mixture looks like wet sand. (Chocolate chips still may be quite large and that’s perfect.)

Spread the oat and almond mixture over the fruit and gently press down into the fruit. Spray the top of the crumble with a little nonstick spray. Bake until fruit is tender and bubbling, and topping is golden brown, about 40-45 minutes. Cool for 15 minutes before serving.

Nutrition information per serving: 254 calories; 113 calories from fat; 13 g fat (6 g saturated; 0 g trans fats); 13 mg cholesterol; 107 mg sodium; 37 g carbohydrate; 6 g fiber; 23 g sugar; 4 g protein.

Children can benefit from yoga Dear Dr. K: My 8-year-old daughter has expressed an interest in taking a yoga class, but I don’t want to waste my money.

Can children really benefit from yoga?

Dear Reader: Yes, they can. I spoke to Dr. Marlynn Wei, who is a psychiatrist, certified yoga teacher and author of the upcoming “Harvard Medical School Guide to Yoga.”

She noted yoga and mindfulness (a related practice) have been shown to improve both physical and mental health in children.

To start with, yoga improves balance, strength, endurance and aerobic capacity in children. A growing body of research has shown yoga also can improve focus, memory, self-esteem, academic performance and classroom behavior. It even can reduce anxiety and stress in children.

Emerging research studies suggest yoga can help children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It may do so by improving the core characteristics of ADHD: inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsivity. It also can boost school performance in children with ADHD. A growing number of schools now integrate yoga and mindfulness into physical education programs or classroom curricula. And many yoga studios offer classes for school-age children.

Here are some yoga exercises for children. You can try these at home with your daughter before signing her up for a class: Simple yoga breath

(1) Take in a deep breath and hold it for a count of three.

(2) Breathe out forcefully, as if you’re blowing out a candle.

(3) Repeat this for five cycles of breath.

(1) Stand tall, with arms at your sides and feet hip-width apart, facing forward.

(3) Pretend to prepare to fly by inhaling and raising your arms (“wings”) until your palms touch overhead. Keep your arms straight.

(5) Repeat in a steady motion with each breath: Inhale as you raise your arms, and exhale as you lower your arms.

Your daughter also might enjoy simple meditation. For example, before bedtime, turn off all electronic devices and reflect on the day with her. Pose questions such as, “What are you grateful for today?”

Here’s another mindfulness meditation exercise: (1) Find a comfortable seated position or lie down.

(2) Close your eyes.

(3) Try to listen to every single sound in the room.

Not being a pediatrician, my only experience with yoga for children involves a friend. Her son was struggling with self-confidence, and it was affecting how he did in school, academically and socially. Practicing yoga gave him a sense of self-control my friend is sure turned him into a popular and gifted student.

When South used NMF, North unnecessarily jumped to four spades.

She should have settled for two spades, but if she liked her hand that much, she could have rebid three spades. This would have given South a chance to suggest a slam if he had a sufficiently strong hand. Also, note that NMF does not guarantee a five-card spade suit. South might have four spades and a big fit with opener’s first-bid suit, so he could be thinking about game or slam in that suit.

The defenders played accurately against four spades. West found the best lead of the heart nine. East won with her queen, and South cleverly dropped his 10. This persuaded East to shift to a trump, but West, after winning with the king, led his second heart. Even though South smoothly played his jack under the ace, East gave her partner a heart ruff, and the club king later resulted in down two.

SECTION 4: The Secretary of the Library District shall promptly file a certified copy of this Ordinance with both the Secretary of State Index Division and the Department of Labor of the State of Illinois.

That, pursuant to Section 2.02 and Section 2.03 of the Open Meetings Act, a schedule of such meetings shall be posted and made available at all library facilities operated by the District and copies of such schedule shall be supplied to all news media which have filed an annual request for such notice.

Section 4. This Ordinance shall be effective upon its approval, posting and, if applicable, its publication or filing, as may be required by law.
