DriveTime dispute headed for a vote

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Opponents to a DriveTime dealership on Larkin Avenue told the City Council on Monday that Joliet already has too many used-car dealers.

The DriveTime plan is one of two controversial proposals that the council is slated to decide on Tuesday.

The other is a cellphone monopole that Verizon wants to build outside the Knights of Columbus Hall on Infantry Drive.

Lawyers for DriveTime said opponents have misrepresented the company as a predatory lender.

Arizona-based DriveTime has 139 dealerships in 26 states, including five in Illinois. The company specializes in selling cars to customers with credit problems.

“I know there’s a lot of misconceptions about what they do,” attorney Michael R. Martin told the council at its Monday workshop meeting. “Yes, they specialize in subprime lending. That’s a highly regulated industry.”

City administration has recommended approval of the DriveTime plan, saying the company plans to spend $750,000 on improvements, the property is suitable to a used-car dealership, and the land is in a commercial area.

Monopole

City staff is recommending rejection of the proposed cellphone monopole at 100 S. 129th Infantry Drive on property owned by the Knights of Columbus.

Neighborhood groups have opposed the monopole.

Alan Greene, an attorney for SBA Towers IX and Verizon Wireless, said an alternative site suggested by city staff has not worked out. The city wants the pole located at Memorial Stadium, but the Joliet Park District does not want it.

“We spent eight months at your request pursuing a tower in the park,” Greene told the council. “It was very clear that the park district was not interested in us locating a tower there.”

Plainfield trustees approve last phase of 127th Street project

mmallory@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield Village Board on Monday night approved the final phase of 127th Street construction, which is slated for completion in 2017.

The last of the three phases comes with a $389,182 construction oversight agreement between the village and Mokena-based Baxter and Woodman Inc. Plainfield Public Works Director Allen Parsons said the project can go to bid in July and be underway shortly after, as a result of a 5-0 vote from the village board. Trustee Brian Wojowski was absent.

of the Northwest Community Park Entrance. Mayor Michael Collins said this project will ease traffic congestion on 127th Street.

“It’s just going to make traffic flow much better,” Collins said. “Like one of our trustees once said, we’re trying to make 2016 roads in an 1800s town. We’re a bit restricted.”

Collins pointed out efforts to ease congestion throughout the village, such as Route 30, Route 59, 127th Street and 143rd Street projects that are either completed or in the works. He said the village has worked around restrictions such as existing buildings, cemeteries and Lake Renwick, to make transportation better.

Last year, the village board approved a $308,936 contract with Baxter and Woodman Inc. for the first two phases of the project.

Martin’s father, attorney Michael Martin, pointed to an investigation by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau that did not make any findings of predatory lending.

But DriveTime opponents noted that the federal agency in 2014 fined the company $8 million for its debt collection practices and for providing inaccurate information to credit reporting agencies.

Bob Nachtrieb, a board member at the Cathedral Area Preservation Association, said the group has counted 41 usedcar dealerships in the city, not including new-car dealers that sell used cars.

He said DriveTime on Larkin Avenue would likely lead to more used-car dealerships on the street.

“The result: North Larkin will start to look more like Jefferson Street,” Nachtrieb said.

Carol Ann Heinemann, president of the St. Pat’s Neighborhood Association, also spoke against the DriveTime proposal, saying it would lead to “yet another used-car dealer.”

DriveTime wants to locate at 1395 N.

The first phase included engineering studies and reports on air, traffic and drainage patterns. The second phase involved contracts, plans and specifications, including obtaining permits from regulatory agencies and a five-year crash data analysis.

With the approval Monday, the village is expected to pay approximately $1.9 million for the entire project, Parsons said, though he expects bids for construction work to come in lower than that. The village was awarded in 2014 a $2 million surface transportation grant for the project.

In other news, the board approved purchases of three Ford Utility Police Interceptors from Rod Baker Ford at a total cost of $85,389, as well as lighting and equipment for the vehicles from Fleet Safety Supply at a total cost of $21,569.10.

Joliet mowing contractor initiates program for young people

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – An experimental summer job program has begun in Joliet.

The program combines one of the city’s lawn-mowing contractors with a job training program aimed at giving young people skills for jobs in landscaping and other careers.

Starting small, the program only is providing one job this summer, although 10 people are going through the training program and receiving minimum-wage stipends while learning job skills.

“This is much-needed,” said the Rev. Adrian Heath, who runs the program. “It can be a lot bigger than what we see here.”

Heath, an associate pastor at Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church in Joliet, has his own lawn-mowing service, A & R Lawn Service, that already has been doing jobs for the city. He also runs Redeemed Connection Ministries, a nonprofit that is the entity providing the training.

Heath is hiring at least one of the program graduates and trying to help the others find work. Recent graduates of the spring program said they found it valuable.

“I don’t feel there’s enough of that in the community,” said Demetrius Nabors, 22.

All the participants of the program are Joliet residents. The primary goal of the program is to get jobs for young people in the city, as well as teach them better skills for finding work and pursuing careers.

“We’re taught what to wear to an interview and how to present,” Nabors said. “I used to just go in street clothes – jeans and a T-shirt with all kinds of graphics.”

Nabors said he’s used some of the lessons learned in the program already, lining up his own mowing jobs.

“It’s a chain reaction,” Nabors said.

“They see you’re doing good and making an effort. They’re willing to help.”

The city is not spending any additional money on the program, although it did advance payments A & R otherwise would have received later in the year. The city contract with A & R makes it possible for Heath to develop the program.

“I’ve been cutting lawns in the community for a long time,” Heath said.

around and not doing anything. What I felt the Lord placed into my head was a vision to help people.”

The training program includes safety rules and instruction in operating commercial mowing equipment. It

also includes visits to local landscaping companies to see that lawn mowing can lead to bigger things.

“I show them that this can be them.

They can do this,” Heath said. “They are young enough. They are smart

enough. They are capable enough to do this.”

Alexander Franklin, 17, who just graduated from Joliet Central High School, is not planning on a career in landscaping. He wants to be an accountant. But he has learned some basic business skills through the program, which Franklin, too, has put into practice, lining up customers for mowing jobs on his own.

“I picked that up here – how to present myself to people,” Franklin said. “I basically had to present myself well for them to be able to trust me with their lawns.”

Will County agencies offer summer meals

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – More than a dozen locations in Will County will offer free meals to children in need throughout the summer.

The sites are sponsored by the Northern Illinois Food Bank, a nonprofit advocacy organization that announced last week its participation in the Summer Food Service Program, or SFSP. The federal program ensures that children from low-income families continue to receive nutritious meals when school is not in session.

The Northern Illinois Food Bank is sponsoring meal sites across 13 counties, including Will and Grundy. The organization is trying to raise awareness of open food sites as only 18 percent of children who qualify for the school lunch program visit them, according to the food bank.

Last year, sites sponsored by the food bank provided 288,929 summer meals to children in need. According to a four-year study by Feeding America, a nonprofit organization, the Northern Illinois Food Bank serves 590,400 people annually and 71,500 weekly.

The George Werden Buck Boys & Girls Club of Joliet is one of 14 open sites in Will County sponsored by the Northern Illinois Food Bank that is offering breakfast and lunch.

Kahlil Diab, the organization’s executive director, said it serves meals to between 360 to 450 children a day.

Joliet Park District employee sues Dominic Egizio, district; claims sexual harassment and assault

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – An employee has filed a lawsuit against the Joliet Park District and former Executive Director Dominic Egizio, claiming that Egizio engaged in sexual harassment that was known by other supervisors and park board members.

The employee, Jeanetta Matichak, filed the federal lawsuit Friday.

Egizio resigned in October after being placed on administrative leave for six weeks because of a complaint filed by a park district employee. He is now the Midlothian Park District director of parks and recreation, according to that

district’s website.

The lawsuit contends that Egizio made lewd comments to Matichak, gave her gifts that included lingerie and a sex toy, and would tell her to come into his office where “he demanded that she remain and/or engage in unwelcome sexual acts.”

It also states that Egizio “took advantage of Ms. Matichak’s vulnerability to coerce her to engage in unwelcome sexual relations” when she was suffering from depression after a miscarriage in 2014.

Egizio took Matichak to a hotel in April 2015, the lawsuit states, and “kept urging her to drink so much alcohol that she experienced a partial blackout.

After he finished his sexual assault and as they left the hotel, she broke down sobbing.”

Matichak has been on medical leave since May 2015 suffering “extreme trauma and a breakdown requiring hospitalization” because of Egizio’s actions, the lawsuit states.

The lawsuit states that Egizio began making lewd comments to Matichak shortly after she was hired as a fitness instructor in July 2011.

It also says Egizio “openly ogled and made sexual comments about the bodies of female employees and members of the Park District” in the presence of supervisors and at least one park board member.

Egizio could not immediately be reached for comment Monday night.

“It’s a personnel issue. It’s litigation.

I really can’t comment on it,” board President Glen Marcum said.

The lawsuit alleges that Marcum was aware in March or April of 2015 of rumors that Egizio “was having sex with Ms. Matichak. He told Egizio to quiet his people and put a stop to the rumors. The board president did not tell Egizio to stop compelling sex with a subordinate, nor did the Board conduct any investigation,” the complaint states.

Egizio at one point told Matichak that park Commissioner Art Schultz Jr. mentioned the rumor to him and said “good for you,” according to the lawsuit.

Judge rules in District 210’s favor on lawsuit

District announces refunds to families over additional excess charges

fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Lincoln-Way High School District 210 officials announced that a Will County judge ruled in their favor over a lawsuit filed against them by the resident group Lincoln-Way Area Taxpayers Unite.

In a written statement sent after 5 p.m. Monday, district officials said Judge Roger Rickmon granted the district’s motion to dismiss the amended lawsuit filed by LWATU that challenged the board’s decision last August to close Lincoln-Way North High School.

“Today’s ruling will allow District 210 to concentrate our full focus on addressing the issues and challenges facing our district, while fulfilling our mission to provide opportunities to maximize the academic growth of all Lincoln-Way students in the most cost-effective manner,” board President Dee Molinare said in the statement.

LWATU founder Liz Sands said

late Monday afternoon that she hadn’t received the ruling yet. She said she would have to look at it and find out what it means, and did not offer further comment.

LWATU’s attorney, Stephen Eberhardt, declined to comment until he had an opportunity to read Rickmon’s decision.

LWATU sued the board last December with a complaint that alleged financial mismanagement on the district’s part, including the establishment of the Superdog training facility, salary increases during years of deficit spending and more.

The majority of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit are North parents.

Rickmon dismissed LWATU’s first lawsuit but allowed for an amended complaint. He also dismissed a temporary restraining order to prevent North’s closure.

Taryn Atwell, the district’s community relations director, was not immediately able to provide a copy of Rickmon’s ruling, which was to be issued by

mail. The Will County Circuit Clerk’s website, which allows users to look up information about court cases, was not immediately accessible Monday evening.

District 210 officials also announced Monday that they will refund families after investigating excess driver education fees for the 2010-11 school year.

The Lincoln-Way administration learned that during that school year, the district may have charged excessive driver education fees.

A statement read that after investigation, it was determined that the $350 waiver was approved January 2011 but was not before the collection of registration fees for fall 2010.

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A family has sued the Chipotle restaurant in Bolingbrook after a 16-year-old girl became sick with E. coli last year.

“This is the first confirmed case of E. coli in Illinois,” Lawrence Maya, a Chicago attorney who filed the lawsuit May 20 in Will County, said Monday.

On Nov. 7, the teen ordered a “veggie bowl” at the restaurant at 274 S.

“She was hospitalized for a time and is still suffering effects, but there has been some improvement,” Maya said.

Tests by the Illinois Department of Public Health confirmed the teen was contaminated with E. coli, the lawsuit stated. People who get sick from E. coli often do so two to eight days after consuming the tainted food, and usually develop diarrhea and abdominal cramps, and recover within a week.

Some illnesses can be longer and more

severe, resulting in a type of kidney failure, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Maya said attorneys representing the Delaware-based Chipotle Mexican Grill have contacted his office last week after becoming aware of the lawsuit but he declined to comment on those discussions.

The lawsuit, which alleges negligence, injury, breach of implied warranty and strict liability, asks for more than $50,000 in compensation.

The clerk’s office has since recalculated the levy, the district has approved the calculations, and the tax bills are set to be mailed June 15, with first installment due July 15 and the second installment due Sept. 15, according to the news release.

Tax payments can still be paid without the original bill, by visiting www.grundyco.org, or visiting the Treasurer’s office located in room 33 of the Grundy County Courthouse, 111 E. Washington St., Morris.

Voots would like to inform residents that all voters registered in the county were mailed voter cards recently.

“If you have not moved and you are wondering why you received a voter card, we are mandated by law to send cards every two years,” Voots said in a news release.

Anyone who receives a voter card at their address for a relative that has moved out of county or is now deceased should visit www.thewillcountyclerk.com click on the “Register to Vote” icon and complete the Voter Registration Info Update online form.

Another option is to mail this information to the Will County Clerk, 302 N. Chicago

St., Joliet, IL 60432; on the back of the voter card or a sheet of paper they should write the voter’s name, date of birth, the sender’s name, signature and relationship to the voter.

Anyone who receives a card, but has changed their last name must reregister to vote on the Will County Clerk’s website, at the Will County Clerk’s Office or other designated registrar in the county.

If a voter receives a card for a previous resident of the address, they should write “Return to Sender” on the voter card and deposit it in a mailbox.

MORRIS – The Grundy County Clerk’s office has received notification from Minooka Community High School District 111 that stated the bond levy calculation originally approved by the district was incorrect.

That information is used to determine some of Grundy County residents’ tax rates. The tax bills were scheduled, and ready for delivery, on June 3. But since this was discovered, the Grundy County Treasurer’s Office pulled the bills from being sent, according to a news release from the county.

Family of convicted murderer from Morris publishes book

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The mother and brother of a Morris man who pleaded guilty last year to murdering his uncle have published a book.

“The 7th Day” by Kimberly Gonzalez and Adam Gonzalez – a popular topic of conversation Monday in the halls of the Will County Courthouse – was published May 30, according to Amazon.com.

Jason M. Gonzalez, 30, was living with his uncle’s family in the 22700 block of South Cedar Road in New Lenox Township until two months before Lance Goebel was found shot to death on Sept. 17, 2009. Prosecutors said Gonzalez had become “inappropriately fixated” on children in the family before he was evicted.

Last June, Jason Gonzalez represented himself during a trial that lasted eight days, cross-examining his mother for three days, before he decided to plead guilty to murder. Gonzalez appeared in court Thursday and told a judge he was withdrawing a motion to have his 45year prison sentence reconsidered.

“What do you do when your child becomes a killer? Do you turn him in, or

help him escape?” the authors ask in the Amazon listing’s introduction.

Kimberly Gonzalez wrote guest opinion columns for The Herald-News in 2007 and 2008. In the book, she writes about seeing her son on the morning of the murder before leaving with friends on a day trip and thinking it odd that he’d shaved his head.

“I ask him if he’s okay and he smiles and tells me he loves me, go, have fun. I turn back before closing the front door and he sheepishly grins at me. If only I had known; if only I had stayed,” she wrote.

When informed of her brother’s death, Kimberly Gonzalez recalled a conversation they’d had months earlier in which Goebel, 48, told her he’d recently increased his life insurance and didn’t expect to live to 50. When her other brother told her Goebel had been shot, she “screamed as the room spins, grabbing the phone with both hands while dropping to the floor. I fell in front of the dresser where Jason’s gun case is always on display. The case is open. The gun is gone,” she wrote.

Young was released Saturday morning from Will County Jail.

According to the indictment, on Nov. 12, Young had videos on his cellphone of a girl younger than 13 years old posing nude and having sex with an adult man.

According to jail records, Young was charged with misdemeanor domestic battery in May 2015, but the victim did not appear in court at his November trial date.

OBITUARIES MARKO BABIC Marko Babic, 87, died Sunday, June 5, 2016, after a brief illness.

Marko was born in Croatia and came to the United States in 1949. He lived first in Rock Springs, Wyoming, and then settled in Joliet.

He married the former Mary Dianni on July 6, 1957, which their children liked to note was the same day John Lennon met Paul McCartney. She survives him.

Marko was employed by U.S. Steel and, later, the city of Crest Hill.

He was a founding member of the Croatian Cultural Club and remained dedicated to it throughout his life. Most Friday nights he and Mary could be found there, enjoying friends, music and parsley potatoes. He was also a lifelong member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church.

Marko loved to putter around the house; there were few spaces he couldn’t improve with a hook, shelf, fan or clamp. In euchre he took no prisoners, and in chess he routinely put his youngest daughter into checkmate within five moves. At home he cooked, cleaned and shopped with gusto.

He grew tomatoes, string beans and roses.

He liked to discuss history, follow the news and talk politics, always ending with a friendly handshake. After years of adversity as a war refugee, he built a full life in a new country. All who knew him experienced his warm, welcoming personality. He will be deeply missed.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Dujo and Josip of Crest Hill; and siblings, George, Ivka, Ankica and Madza, all of Croatia.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by children, James (Mary) Babic of Berwyn, JoAnn (CJ Braaten) Babic of Minneapolis, Mark of Aurora, Dan of Brooklyn, NY, and Mary Jean (Lou Rosenfeld) of Brooklyn, NY; grandchildren, Joseph, Anne, Nicholas and Max Babic, Jacob and Marco Braaten and Iris and Nathaniel Rosenfeld; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Clara married Floyd Bogart in 1948; he passed away in 2004.

Clara was a member of the Kalkaska American Legion Auxiliary. She loved quilting, reading and was a very creative woman.

Christopher Arthur Thompson, age 56, late of Three Oaks, Michigan, and formerly of Joliet, passed away suddenly, Friday, June 3, 2016, from natural causes.

Born Jan. 27, 1960, in Joliet, he was the son of Arthur and Marilyn (Smith) Thompson. He married his beloved wife, Jennifer Sara Thompson, in 2015.

She survives along with two daughters, Alexandra and Margaret; his mother, Marilyn Thompson of Joliet; two brothers, Jeff (Nancy) Thompson of Joliet and David (Carla) Thompson of Coal City; one sister, Marianne (Joe) Haake of Joliet; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded by his father, Arthur Thompson in 1996.

Chris was employed as the executive direc-

tor of the Chikaming Open Lands Conservancy in Sawyer, MI, for the past five years. For 18 years while living in the Chicago area, Chris owned Event Management. He offered many jobs to local youth who helped him with the food and beverage at the Taste of Chicago.

Those were challenging, but very fun times.

He was a graduate of St. Paul the Apostle Grade School and was the center for the Green Giants. He attended Joliet Catholic High School, where he was a member of the 1977 and 1978 state champion football teams. He later received his undergraduate degree in art and anthropology, and master’s of fine arts degree from Northwestern University.

While at Northwestern as a freshman, Chris played football. He met Bill Draznik from Joliet on the football field freshman year and Bill introduced him to the ATO fraternity. Chris eventually became president of ATO and developed many lifelong friends through the fraternity.

Chris was an accomplished artist and to this day has many paintings hung from Chicago to the East Coast. He was the recipient of the Scholastic Gold Key Award, a Scholastic National Gold Medal for painting, the Rotary International Scholarship for Art, the Ford Foundation Arts Fellowship and the Quita Brodhead Memorial Award from the Wayne Art Center.

Chris will be remembered for his dedication to preserving the natural beauty of Southwest Michigan and his appreciation for the arts. He was a wonderful husband, father, son, brother, athlete and, most of all, friend. His zest for life was unequalled. To him, a great restaurant, brew pub or backyard barbeque with friends was all he wanted. He loved to travel and he and his wife just recently returned from enjoying a safari honeymoon in Africa. He was in many ways a Renaissance man. A brilliant thinker, he had a great head for business and was a gifted artist. He was a loving and caring person who lit up every room he entered.

His passion and enthusiasm for life and his chosen profession knew no bounds. He will long be remembered and sadly missed.

Born in Chicago, he was a longtime resident of Tinley Park and Glenwood before moving to Lockport. Vic worked as an accountant for International Harvester for 28 years, retiring in 1982. He was a proud U.S. Army veteran.

Superintendents blast Rauner on school funding

CHICAGO – Questions about education funding and schools opening on time were focal points Monday in Illinois’ ongoing budget gridlock, with superintendents accusing Gov. Bruce Rauner of playing politics and the Republican pushing a funding plan while intensifying his critique of Chicago schools.

More than a dozen school superintendents signed a letter to Rauner saying Illinois’ much-maligned funding formula needs an overhaul and Republican-led proposals to fund schools continue the “failed status quo.”

Biden unveiling database for clinical data on cancer

WASHINGTON – Vice President Joe Biden unveiled a public database for clinical data on cancer on Monday that aims to help researchers and doctors better tailor new treatments to individ-

school leaders including from Chicago, Peoria and East Moline. They said many schools won’t open their doors in the fall without funding and the complex system Illinois has used to distribute money to schools since 1997 is the most “regressive” in the U.S. Rauner agreed the formula is unfair, but said two GOP school funding plans will allow time to negotiate a balanced budget and for schools to open as planned, something he’s “very concerned” about.

Though Illinois has operated without a budget for nearly a year, schools have remained largely unaffected.

That’s because last year Rauner rejected everything in the out-of-balance spending plan Democrats sent him except for K-12 spending. This year, Democrats didn’t agree on a budget to send Rauner. Republicans proposed the

school funding bills, which Democrats have said they’d consider. Lawmakers plan to keep meeting over the summer.

The possibility of public schools not opening this fall hinges on how long the impasse continues and puts pressure on lawmakers to negotiate a deal.

Poorer districts without cash reserves or sufficient local property tax money have worried about being unable to pay teachers.

Rauner, whose Monday schedule included Illinois stops in Oregon, Ottawa and Chicago, accused the state’s largest school district of seeking a bailout when its finances have been mismanaged for years. He likened some Chicago schools to “almost crumbling prisons,” prompting Chicago Public Schools officials to call for an apology.

He also stepped up criticism of Emanuel, with whom he’s vacationed,

for not supporting his agenda and lining up behind the governor’s main political rival in the budget standoff, Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan.

“If I have one major disappointment in the last 18 months it’s with the mayor,” Rauner said. “We’re friends. We’re always going to be friends. You can separate friendship from what’s good public policy.”

Emanuel, who touted city test scores and graduation rates Monday, shot back by taking his comparison of Rauner to presumptive GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump a step further.

“Now it sounds like he’s auditioning to be Donald Trump’s running mate,” Emanuel said. “And I would just say to him that this is not about right-wing ideology, it’s about results.”

The Illinois Department of Public Health said Monday that an adolescent in west-central Illinois became ill with the virus late last month. Health department officials said the first human case came much earlier this year.

There were 77 human cases last year, including nine deaths.

Health department officials said the early onset this year means it’s important for Illinoisans to protect themselves against the virus. The virus is spread through mosquito bites. Symptoms include fever, nausea, headache and muscle aches.

TAMPA, Fla. – Heavy rains from Tropical Storm Colin hit north Florida and southern Georgia on Monday, knocking out power in some areas and flooding roads on the Gulf Coast. Residents filled sandbags, schools closed early and graduation ceremonies were postponed as Gov. Rick Scott declared a state of emergency.

The National Hurricane Center said Colin marked the earliest that a third named storm has ever formed in the Atlantic basin.

Colin’s maximum sustained winds Monday were near 50 mph with some slow strengthening possible during the next two days. While rains pelted the region, the storm was centered about 190 miles west-northwest of Tampa and was moving north-northeast at 23 mph.

Yellen: Economy solid but laced with uncertainties

Consumer spending is picking up along with confidence. Higher home prices have lifted household wealth. Low energy prices have strengthened spending power. Yet the Fed chairwoman also sent a contrasting message in a speech in Philadelphia: So many uncertainties surround the

economy that it’s impossible to sketch any timetable for when the Fed might raise interest rates again.

Thirteen times Yellen mentioned some variation of the word “uncertainty” – starting with a question raised by a dismal jobs report the government issued Friday: “Is the markedly reduced pace of hiring in April and May,” Yellen asked, “a harbinger of a persistent slowdown in the broader economy?”

She didn’t claim to know the answer. The Fed, she said, “will be wrestling” with that question in the months ahead – just as it will be studying other uncertainties she pointed to.

Teen who killed girl after rejection gets 25 years

MILFORD, Conn. – A teenager was sentenced Monday to 25 years in prison for fatally stabbing a classmate after she turned down his invitation to the junior prom.

A judge handed down the sentence to 19-year-old Christopher Plaskon in Milford Superior Court. He pleaded no contest to murder in March in the killing of 16-year-old Maren Sanchez inside Jonathan Law High School in Milford on April 25, 2014, the day of the prom. Sanchez’s parents said after the hearing that they were frustrated that the prison sentence wasn’t longer.

Trump campaign wasting precious time, GOP critics say

WASHINGTON – Donald Trump is wasting precious time.

By now, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee was supposed to have stationed senior staff in battleground states, moderated his fiery message to attract new supporters and begun raking in big money.

Instead, he’s spending more time right now picking fights and settling scores than delivering a message that might help draw voters.

Five long weeks since he defeated his last remaining GOP rival, Republicans fear the New York billionaire has squandered his head start. As Democrat Hillary Clinton eyes her party’s nomination, Trump’s campaign has been roiled by infighting, his battleground strategy is lagging and his fundraising operation is barely off the ground.

“I am getting bad marks from certain pundits because I have a small campaign staff.

But small is good, flexible, save money and number one!” Trump insisted Monday on Twitter.

Some would-be Republican supporters also fear his unwillingness to budge from a flame-throwing formula targeting immigrants and Muslims that worked so well in the GOP primary.

Case in point: Trump’s recent comments about the Mexican heritage of the judge presiding over a case against his now-defunct Trump University. The Republican businessman has refused to back down from his claim that the judge’s ethnic background creates a

conflict of interest, drawing scorn from across the GOP as well as the legal community.

Republican South Dakota Sen. John Thune said Monday “it’s not a good place to be” for Republicans to have to repeatedly explain their presumptive nominee’s statements.

“There are I think conversations going on with the campaign, and hopefully that message is being clearly conveyed,” Thune said.

“But yeah, he’s going to have to adapt. This is not working for him. They were inappropriate comments.”

Trump also has been slow to adapt to other contours of an expansive general election.

Since Texas Sen. Ted Cruz dropped out of the race last month, he has spent precious little time in the battleground states that will likely decide the election.

He has ignored Florida and Ohio, preferring to spend the bulk of the past two weeks in California – a state that hasn’t supported a Republican presidential candidate in nearly three decades.

The ongoing rivalry between aides loyal to Trump’s campaign manager Corey Lewandowski and to campaign chairman Paul Manafort appears to affect virtually all aspects of the campaign.

Two weeks ago, political director Rick Wiley was fired in the midst of a battleground hiring effort. While the campaign hoped to have senior staff in place across 15 states by June 1, the ex-political director did not finalize a single hire before leaving, said an aide with direct knowledge of the hiring who was not authorized to speak publicly.

The positions remained unfilled as the factions pushed separate candidates to step in as Trump’s political director.

To the Editor: Are you getting the idea that these people are the biggest bunch of goofballs and screw-offs that you are likely to see – up there with the Iraqi and Greek parliaments?

They’re not even close to balancing the budget or doing their constitutional duty.

Bringing in the Supreme Court to raise taxes until all the commitments are met and then watch the voter outrage and repercussions would be a sane start.

These legislators act as if this is a ceremonial job with lots of pomp and circumstance and no results. Didn’t their pay already get cut off?

Governor appears to be failing at his mandate Near the top of any list of Illinois government’s many problems is that House Speaker Michael Madigan has made a decades-long game out of messing with the minds and the agendas of our governors.

If there’s one constant since 1983, it’s Madigan’s jiu-jitsu moves against whoever happens to be governor.

Sometimes, he was wholly justified (particularly in the waning months of Rod Blagojevich’s administration), but he often appears to do this simply because he can. Just ask Pat Quinn. That guy never did figure out why Madigan messed with him on a constant basis.

Understandably, all that can get on one’s nerves. Governors can start seeing nefarious plots where none actually exist – such as when Gov. Bruce Rauner recently shut down a leaders meeting after Senate President John Cullerton spitballed an idea about a stopgap budget to get the state past the election. Rauner thought at the time it was somehow a plot by Madigan to scuttle the nonbudget negotiations, even though Madigan said during the meeting that he didn’t support his fellow Democrat’s idea.

I do give Rauner some credit, however. The guy has some jiu-jitsu moves of his own. The governor eventually flip-flopped and decided to demand passage of a stopgap appropriations bill at almost literally the spring ses-

VIEWS Rich Miller sion’s 11th hour, completely reversing course from just a few days earlier when he rejected the same idea from Cullerton.

Madigan had told Rauner and the other leaders that he’d only support a stopgap proposal for this fiscal year, not next. So Rauner can now once again blame Madigan, with justification this time, if a stopgap isn’t approved and the government completely falls apart.

But the governor’s default position that Madigan and the Democrats are to blame for almost everything wrong under the sun also got him in a bit of trouble last week. Rauner embarked on a mostly downstate PR tour designed to loudly blame the Democrats for their inability to yet again close a deal on the budget and his economic reforms.

During that tour, Rauner accused Democrats of shying away from “tough votes” on issues such as Exelon’s corporate bailout, according to the Quad-City Times. Exelon had just announced it was closing two downstate nuclear power plants because it couldn’t get its bailout legislation

passed.

Passing Exelon’s bill wouldn’t have been a “tough” vote – it would’ve been a stupid vote.

The bill simply isn’t soup yet. Yes, negotiators got closer than they ever did in the spring session’s final days.

But the interests that weren’t at the negotiating table have yet to have their say.

The only way a massive corporate subsidy for an otherwise fabulously profitable company can be passed is if all four legislative leaders and the governor are pulling in the same direction. And that can’t happen until all stakeholders have their say.

Without that progress, voting to hike electricity rates on just about everybody to save some jobs is both legislative and political stupidity. And to grant the company more than $2 billion in subsidies that cannot be clawed back if the plants become profitable is, frankly, ridiculous.

Not to mention that one of those districts with a nuke plant targeted for closure is represented by Republican Rep. Bill Mitchell. I happen to admire the guy for his survival skills, but he has made a career out of railing against welfare and demanding that Chicago secede from the state. To bail out his district while the governor publicly fumes on an almost daily basis about not wanting to help

Chicago’s fiscally bereft public school system is unrealistic in the extreme.

And despite saying that he has “focused” on this problem for “quite a while,” and was “in there fighting hard,” Rauner never once mentioned Exelon’s legislation at the leaders meetings. His staff also reportedly waved off an inquiry by House Democratic staff about where the governor stood. As the Quad-City Times noted in an editorial, Rauner never made any sort of firm public commitment to the proposal except to have his staff say the matter was “under review.”

This Exelon finger-pointing put the governor’s gamesmanship on display.

He’s never to blame. He’s just a helpless victim of the Democrats.

If the governor has any mandate at all from the voters, it’s to “Shake up Springfield,” as he endlessly promised during the campaign. It was, by far, the defining “issue” for candidate Rauner. And nobody personifies “Springfield” in voters’ minds more than Madigan. To constantly portray himself as powerless to stop Madigan’s sorcery is essentially an admission of failure.

One day, people are gonna catch on to this.

Lemont beats De La Salle to reach state Indians also defeated Meteors two years ago in supersectional

Shaw Media correspondent CRESTWOOD – For the second time in three years, Lemont is headed back to the Class 3A baseball finals.

On Monday in the Crestwood Supersectional, the Indians scored in the second through sixth innings to beat De La Salle, 10-4.

Two years ago, Lemont also beat De La Salle in the Supersectional, 11-1, to make the finals on their way to winning the Class 3A state title.

Lemont (28-9) now will play St. Viator in a 10 a.m. Friday semifinal game at Silver Cross Field.

St. Viator earned its spot in the semifinals with a 12-3 victory Monday over Fenwick in the Naperville Supersectional.

“Offensively, we hit the ball hard,” Lemont coach Brian Storako said.

“We tell the hitters to trust themselves, and they did that today. Nate [Madej] is our bulldog on the mound.

He did a great job today, and it was his first start in two weeks. Not from nothing with him, it was just the way it worked out.”

Storako was asked about the similarities of beating De La Salle two years ago and then winning a state title.

“Different situation and a different team,” he said with a smile.

The Indians scored two runs in the second on an RBI grounder by Joe Kelley that turned into two runs on the throwing error by the Meteors’ third baseman.

In the third with Lemont’s Casey O’Brien on first after a single, senior Nick Wisz hit a towering fly ball to center field that carried to right center in the strong wind for an RBI triple. Garrett Acton scored Wisz with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.

“I want to lead, as a senior, like the seniors did two years ago, when I was on the team as a sophomore,” Wisz said. “I learned a lot from that group of seniors. Nate was dealing on the mound today, and that gave us so much confidence at the plate.”

The Indians got an RBI double from

second baseman Angel Salinas to make it 5-0 after four innings.

Then in the fifth, Lemont collected five hits, which included three doubles and plated four runs. O’Brien, Wisz and Ryan Sublette all doubled, and Salinas had an RBI single to give the Indians a 9-0 lead.

De La Salle (18-16) still had fight in it by sending nine men to the plate in the top of the sixth, scoring four runs on four hits and two walks.

Madej was removed from the game in the top of the sixth after giving up a leadoff single. Madej, a lefty, allowed only three hits and was charged with one run in five innings of work. He struck out six and walked two.

Madej had pitched out of a tough jam in the top of the third when Lem-

ont was leading just 2-0. The Meteors had runners on second and third with no outs, but Madej got a fly out to center field then struck out the next two batters to get out of the inning.

“In the third inning, when they (De La Salle) had guys on second and third, I knew I just had to bear down and trust everything,” Madej said.

“I found my breaking stuff, and then everything really started to click. I didn’t want to come out in the sixth, but I understood the situation. Our goal at the beginning of the season was 30 wins – we need two more to get that.”

Jake Leibfritz relieved Madej and retired two hitters before Danny Rizzo came in and recorded the final out of the inning.

Lemont added a run in the sixth on an RBI single by Sublette, who went 3 for 3 with a walk, two RBIs and scored three runs; he also finished the game on the mound in the seventh.

“I was seeing the ball real well at the plate today,” Sublette said. “We all had a great day offensively. We [the coaches] talked before the game about maybe getting an inning on the mound if it was the right situation. I just went out there in the seventh and threw strikes because I know the good defense we have. It was pretty exciting to end the game on the mound and know you’re going to state.”

Plainfield North earns its initial state trip

Shaw Media correspondent CRESTWOOD – Plainfield North’s baseball team scored a trip to Silver Cross Field on Monday night.

The Tigers beat St. Laurence, 2-0, in the Class 4A Crestwood Supersectional at Standard Bank Stadium –in a game that felt much closer, but for the nine-strikeout performance of Tyler Garrity.

Josh Garner’s double to right-center gave the Tigers (33-3) a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Justin Yeager and Jake Dunham had walked, and Garner’s first-pitch smash of Anthony Robles’ fastball scored Yeager and pinch-runner Chase Jamison with one out.

North had the bases loaded twice in the sixth, but a double play – culminating with St. Laurence left fielder Zach Verta throwing Dunham out at the plate – killed the first chance for a

run, and a strikeout of Alex Steinbach by reliever Angel Sandoval ended the inning.

Garrity, with fine control, struck out eight in the first six innings and allowed only one baserunner – a hit

by Verta in the third inning – in that stretch. He struck out Verta in the top of the sixth for his seventh strikeout.

Garrity allowed only two balls out of the infield, routine flyouts in the first and fourth innings. St. Laurence

(31-9) seemed handcuffed at the plate, Verta’s single to left field aside.

Coach John Darlington’s squad was chasing a Class 4A finals berth against a Catholic League foe for the second straight year.

Last year, the Tigers made it all the way to the supersectional before dropping a 5-4 decision to Mount Carmel.

That outcome helped light the fire that carried the Tigers to Standard Bank Stadium again.

South scored a run in the first as Nick Mayerhofer and Trey Stewart both singled to left. Konnor Ash drew a walk off Celtic starter Connor Hilty to load the bases before Gabe Wair singled in a run to give his team a 1-0 lead.

With one out, Antonio Gutierrez hit a fly to Kelley in medium-deep right field. Kelley threw a strike on the fly to catcher Jim Jeffries, who applied the tag to complete the double play.

“I knew it was a big momentum play, and I was really excited to make the big play,”

Kelley said.

Providence tied the game at 1 on an RBI single by Mike Madej in the third inning.

“We all work our butts off,” Madej said. “It’s just never one guy. Zach’s double was huge for us in the fifth, and three straight two-out hits to win the game.”

CHAMPAIGN – Providence Catholic’s comeback kids did it again, and made state baseball history in the process.

Trailing a young and talented Plainfield South squad, the two-time defending Class 4A state champions won Monday’s Class 4A University of Illinois at Champaign Supersectional, 4-3, Monday in the only way they know how – by coming from behind.

South (24-13) had just regained the lead at 3-2 by scoring runs in the top of the fifth inning.

The Cougars’ Mississippi State-recruit, junior Austin Marozas (6-2), had retired the first two Celtics (31-9) in the bottom of the fifth.

Then Zach Pych hit a shot to center and stretched it into a double. Jackson Dvorak drove home Pych for the tying run after collecting his third hit of the day, a liner that deflected off South’s second baseman.

“All year, we have been shooting to get back to Joliet,” Dvorak said. “I just went up there and hit the ball hard and got the tying run home. And then, Joe won it for us. It feels great to be going back to Joliet for the third time.”

After Dvorak took second on an errant throw, he scored on Tom Kelley’s two-out single, which proved to be the game-winning run.

“We play with a lot of passion and never give up,” Kelley said. “I got a good pitch and drove home the game-winner.”

With the thrilling comefrom-behind win, the Celtics entered the IHSA record book.

The victory was their 19th consecutive state tournament win over three years. No other school ever had accomplished that feat.

Providence becomes the first two-time champion to advance to state the next year to give it an opportunity for an unprecedented third consecutive championship.

The Celtics advance to Silver Cross Field at 3 p.m. Friday and will meet the winner of the Crestwood Supersectional between Plainfield North or St.

The Celtics grabbed the lead in bottom of the fourth when Dvorak hit a double that got lost in the sun. Alex Helmin ran for Dvorak and scored to make it 2-1 when Colin Airola got an infield single.

South answered in the top of the fifth. With one out, Mayerhofer hit a double, then scored the tying run on a windblown triple by Stewart. Ash singled to give his team a 3-2 lead.

Celtics winning pitcher Tyler Zarembka replaced Hilty in the top of the third and still was on the mound in the sixth.

Madej took a hit away Cody Miller for the first out and then, with two outs, Matt Waznis ran down Mayerhofer’s drive to the left-field warning track to end the inning.

Providence closer Matt Trzesniewski slammed the door on the Cougars in the seventh, nailing down his eighth save of the season.

“Our goal at the start of the season was to get the three (state championships),” Trzesniewski said. “I have been prepping for this all season. I went out there in the seventh and got the job done. The size of the player doesn’t matter, only the size of his heart.”

With eight starting position players and their top four pitchers returning, the future looks bright for the Cougars and coach Phil Bodine.

“We were right there with the two-time defending champs,” Bodine said. “I am so proud of the way that my kids played throughout the tournament. Everyone returns except for my outstanding catcher, Gabe Wair. We should be pretty good.”

Providence coach Mark Smith wasn’t surprised to see his team pull off another comeback win.

“These kids are unbelievable – they don’t quit,” Smith said. “Two-out rally after South scores two in the top of the fifth to go up. Zach’s double was huge, Jackson’s hit tied and Tom won it. Tom’s first play in the first was a game-saver for us, and Matt has done it for us all in the closer’s role.”

Normal West halts Lincoln-Way East state tourney streak

cherron@shawmedia.com NORMAL – Lincoln-Way East was hoping to do something that no other softball program from the Joliet area had done before – capture a third state trophy.

But thanks to a Reganne Camp’s three-hit shutout, which featured eight strikeouts, Normal West assured itself of its first trophy in the sport for a top-four finish.

The Wildcats scored in the fifth inning on a two-out double to left by Ellie Sonetz, which drove in Jaxynn Dyson to account for the only run in a 1-0 victory Monday over the Griffins n the Class 4A Illinois State University Supersectional.

West (28-9) advances to Friday’s 3 p.m. semifinals at EastSide Centre in East Peoria. There it will meet Downers Grove South, which beat Sandburg, 5-3, at Benedictine University.

Coach Elizabeth Pawlicki’s Griffins (26-8) also were hoping to become just the fifth program from the Chicago area and only the sixth statewide in the large-class tournament to capture three straight trophies.

East pitcher Marina Esparza threw well enough to win most contests, allowing just five hits while striking out five in her six innings of work.

But the Wildcats were able to get a clutch two-out RBI hit shortly after Camp recorded two strikeouts to get out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the fourth inning.

“I think the girls did a great job and should be proud of themselves, along with the program,” Pawlicki said. “The girls have started a great tradition and prepped everybody for it, and I can’t be prouder of what they’re leaving behind and what they’ve accomplished. Our veterans really complemented the new members of the team and left a legacy and their mark.”

The Griffins graduate five seniors – Lauren Herlihy, Eleni Kioussis, Nicole O’Donnell, Brittany Pospishil and Olivia Prieto. Junior Ami Ill and the seniors were on the two trophy-winning teams, other than Pospishil, who

joined Christine Malito on last year’s squad. During the past three years, East went 83-25, finishing second to Marist a year ago and taking fourth in 2014.

“Honestly, it’s an honor to have been part of this program,” Herlihy said. “E Paw is a great coach. I’ve been playing with a lot of these girls for the past three years, and I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. I hope this team can go all the way to state next year since they deserve it, and East is a great school. I’ll remember just how close everyone was. We were all sisters. The bus rides and practices were great, and I’ll never forget the past four years.”

O’Donnell was the only Griffin to reach in the first three innings, getting hit by a pitch in the third. But East put three straight runners on in the fourth and appeared as if it might score first.

With one out, Ill got an infield hit, Malito followed with a single to center, and Esparza drew a walk to load the bases. But Camp struck out the next two hitters to get out of the mess.

After Kioussis got to second base in the fifth to become East’s final baserunner to get into scoring position, the Wildcats pushed across the only run that they would need.

Dyson reached on a fielder’s choice, then took second on an error.

After stealing third base, she came home on the two-out double to left by Sonetz.

The Griffins got a leadoff walk from Ill in the sixth, but she was doubled up, and Camp struck out the next batter in the sixth and the first two in the seventh before coaxing a flyout.

“If someone would have told me four years ago that we’d do this, I wouldn’t have believed them,” O’Donnell said. “The opportunities that we’ve been given have been incredible. These seniors are awesome, and I’m glad that all of the younger kids were able to experience this. I wouldn’t have thought we’d go this far this season, but the freshmen stepped up so much, and they have another three years after this. Every year, the seniors are leaving their mark.”

They sure did – a victory that Busch was building toward all season.

He quietly had been having a solid season for SHR, posting four top-five finishes and 11 top 10s in 13 starts entering the race. He had reeled off seven straight top 10s – he graded his season an A-minus – but didn’t have the win he needed to earn a sport in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

Busch led 32 laps in winning his 28th career Cup race, moving him into a tie with Hall of Famer Rex White for 25th on NASCAR’s career wins list. He also has three wins at Pocono with three different teams.

Busch became the ninth driver to win a race this season.

Busch nursed what was left in the tank for the last 30-plus laps of green flag racing to snap a 34-race losing skid.

Busch and Klausmeier posed arm-inarm for a picture in victory lane and left just enough space in between them to insert a picture of Gibson.

“We just kept him informed on everything that was going on, and he took it and ran with it,” Klausmeier said.

Elliott led 51 laps and seemed poised for most of the race to earn his first career win. The Hendrick Motorsports rookie who replaced Jeff Gordon in the No. 24 Chevrolet stumbled off late restarts that forced him to fall short at the end.

“I wish I had been a little more patient and given ourselves a better chance,” Elliott said.

It was the first Monday race at Pocono since 2009 and the first postponed Cup race of the season.

LONG POND, Pa. – Kurt Busch felt like a game-show contestant who had to beat the clock to win a prize.

Told that his Chevrolet was two laps shy of having enough fuel for the finishing push, Busch did all he could to save, scrimp and stretch over the final five laps to give himself a shot at the win. He coasted, he kept his foot off the gas and even turned his engine off when he headed into the turns at Pocono Raceway.

“I kept finding ways to think I was saving fuel,” he said. “The way the fuel mileage played out, I didn’t know if we’d have enough.”

With an interim crew chief calling the shots, Busch found enough ways to make his gas last and won the Sprint Cup race Monday, his first victory of the season and a welcome dose of good news for Stewart-Haas Racing.

The 2004 champion, urged by his team to step Kurt Busch on it hard for the final lap, somehow made it work on a track with the longest front stretch in motorsports.

There was no pain at the pump: Busch not only had enough fuel left to win, but also enough for victory burnouts and a celebratory lap around the track.

“I was like, whoa, how many laps shy are we? They said two,” he said. “These are really long straightaways at Pocono, and you have to manage saving fuel as well as maintaining lap time. So many thoughts can go through your head, but I just stuck with the checklist.”

Dale Earnhardt Jr. was second, and Brad Keselowski, Chase Elliott and Joey Logano rounded out the top five in a race postponed one day because of rain.

PHILADELPHIA – Jon Lester pitched eight scoreless innings, Jason Heyward hit a two-run homer and the Cubs held off the Philadelphia Phillies, 6-4, Monday night.

Lester (7-3) improved to 6-0 in eight career starts against the Phillies while lowering his ERA against them to 1.46.

He struck out nine, walked none and allowed four hits.

Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo and Dexter Fowler each had three hits for the Cubs, who won their 11th in 13 games while extending their best start since 1900 to a major league-leading 4016 record. The Cubs moved 10 games in front of second-place Pittsburgh in the NL Central. Bryant had a pair of doubles and an RBI and Rizzo drove in two runs.

The Cubs have dominated the Phillies this season, winning all four meetings while outscoring Philadel-

phia 23-9.

Philadelphia scored all of its runs in the ninth after Cubs manager Joe Maddon elected not to send Lester out for the last inning. Lester threw 95 pitches and had to wait out a lengthy top of the ninth.

Justin Grimm gave up a pair of singles and Freddy Galvis’ three-run homer without recording an out. Closer Hector Rondon relieved Grimm and promptly surrendered Tommy Joseph’s solo shot to center. Rondon then got two quick outs before Odubel Herrera’s pinch-hit single brought the tying run to the plate with two outs. Rondon got Ryan Howard to ground out to earn his 11th save in as many chances.

Philadelphia has lost nine of 11 overall while falling to 0-8 on Mondays this season. The Phillies’ last win on a Monday came last July 20, making it 13 straight Mondays with a defeat.

Adam Morgan (1-5) gave up three runs on eight hits in six innings to lose his fifth straight start.

CHICAGO – James Shields could pitch his first “Big Game” in his first game in a White Sox uniform Wednesday against the Washington Nationals’ Max Scherzer. That’s when the 11thyear right-hander acquired from the San Diego Padres for two prospects over the weekend might be called on to prevent the Sox from falling under .500 for the first time.

Should the Sox – who are coming off a 2-7 road trip and 18 losses in the past 24 games, lose in a nine-game homestand opener Tuesday (7:10 p.m., CSN) – they will fall to 29-29, positioning themselves for an almost unimaginable scenario after they had rolled to a 23-10 start.

With a 3.72 ERA ranking third in the AL after the Detroit Tigers’ threegame weekend sweep, some saw the Sox rotation as the least of their worries. So why shore it up?

“James’ presence is not only going to make that rotation stronger, but it’s going to have a positive effect, not only on the other starters, but the bullpen, given his ability to go deeper into games,” general manager Rick Hahn said.

Hahn has additional pressing needs, and said he is not done adding.

He needs tougher outs, preferably from the left side, at designated hitter and elsewhere. Triple-A shortstop Tim Anderson could inject needed speed and offense in the lineup and allow Tyler Saladino to deepen and diversify a thin bench. And another big arm in the bullpen would be welcome.

Mobile medical unit offers various dental, medical services for children, adults

JOLIET – The Will County Community Health Center’s mobile dental unit just got a redo.

It’s now called the mobile medical unit, and with the name change comes continuing and expanded services: health screenings, school physicals, STD testing, vaccinations and treatment for acute and chronic illnesses.

That’s in addition to comprehensive oral exams, X-rays, fillings, simple extractions, oral cancer screenings and teeth cleaning, including deep cleaning for adults, which often calls for anesthesia, “an excellent service to be able to provide on mobile,” said Dr. Jennifer Byrd, chief medical officer at the Will County Community Health Center in Joliet.

“It’s a one-room clinic on wheels,” Byrd said.

And where does this mobile unit go?

Schools, day care centers, health fairs, homeless shelters and places such as Stepping Stones Treatment Center in Joliet, Byrd said. Services are rendered by appointment, and parents must sign consent forms for their children to be treated.

Insurance is accepted on the mobile unit. In some circumstances, services are rendered through subsidies and on a sliding scale, Byrd said. However, there is room for flexibility, especially at homeless shelters, she said, where someone might be in acute dental pain.

“We understand that could be the case when we go out,” Byrd said.

But why a mobile unit when Will County has the health department and a community health center?

Because when busy working parents are struggling financially, both time and transportation can be difficult to come by.

Accessibility may vanish altogether for the homeless, who struggle even to get a bowl of soup and bed for the night, Byrd said. Sometimes, people are not aware of the need for good oral health or certain vaccination schedules.

“This is a way to break down the deterrents to care, to allow us to get more deeply into the community,” Byrd said.

“The nice thing about it is that if it’s here and they’re here, they can go directly to the van and get the service,” Lauridsen said.

Courtney Suchor, director of Catholic Charities Daybreak Center in Joliet, said a volunteer medical team does come to the shelter once a month, but this team does not treat children, whereas the mobile medical unit does.

In the past, painful dental issues were treated in a hospital emergency department, Suchor said.

“Since we’ve had visits from the dental van, we don’t have as many of those emergencies anymore,”

Just as the mobile medical unit brings a variety of services on four wheels, the Will County Community Health Center offers an equal variety under one roof.

Some of those services include obstetrics and gynecology, family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, dental and oral hygiene, a Walgreens pharmacy, phlebotomy services and its newly integrated behavioral health services.

Staff include part-time psychiatrist Dr. Edward Navakas and Wanda Rohl, a licensed clinical social worker. The

center also is hiring a behavioral health advance practice nurse and plans to hire a full-time psychiatrist.

“With that team, there is a medical assistant to do vitals,” Byrd said.

Everyone age 12 and older is screened for depression, Byrd said, and the waiting area was designed to be patient-friendly. Byrd, herself a geriatrician, sees senior patients, but giving medical care to “late stage” senior patients – those with a history of low access to health care services – is different from treating the average seniors who do have access to health care.

“Some of my 60-year-olds are so sick, they have the bodies of 80-yearolds,” Byrd said.

NAPERVILLE – Registration is open for Edward Cancer Center’s 12th annual Camp Hope, a weeklong summer camp for children ages 6 to12 whose parent or grandparent is living with cancer. Fiveyear-old and 13-year-old children will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Two sessions of Camp Hope are scheduled: June 20 to 24 and July 11 to 15. Camp times are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will be held at Naper Settlement, 523 S. Webster St. in Naperville. Child care before and after camp is not provided.

Camp Hope campers take part in therapeutic breakout sessions, including arts and crafts, music therapy, yoga and small-group discussions, as well as traditional summer camp activities. Licensed clinical social workers from the Edward Cancer Center facilitate the breakout sessions and are available throughout the day.

There is no cost to attend Camp Hope.

Camper tuitions are covered by the Phil Lawler Batting 4 A Cure Foundation, proceeds from the Hoops for Healing High School Basketball Tournament, grants and private donations.

blood flow backs up. This causes tiny hemorrhages, swelling and other pressure-related damage in the retina.

Retinal artery occlusion is a medical emergency. Loss of vision may be permanent if blood flow is not restored within 24 hours. Treatment aims to increase blood flow to the retina, but treatment options are limited, and none are very effective. They include injecting a clot-busting drug into the retinal artery and using a blood vessel-widening medication to improve blood flow.

There are more options when the vein is blocked. But even these therapies often are unsatisfactory.

Many cases of retinal vessel occlusion are related to atherosclerosis and other conditions, such as high blood pressure and diabetes, which can damage blood vessels.

As a result, you can reduce your risk of this eye problem by not smoking, and controlling your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar. People with diabetes should have a thorough eye exam at least once a year.

Without knowing anything about your health, I can’t say whether you are at risk for the problem your friend has. I hope he received emergency treatment that restored his vision.

Dear Dr. K: A friend recently lost vision in his right eye because of something called “retinal vessel occlusion.” What is that? Can it be prevented?

Dear Reader: The retina is the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye that receives light and then sends a signal to the brain – resulting in vision. Most of the blood circulation to the retina comes through one artery and one vein. If either blood vessel or one of their smaller branches is blocked, this is called an occlusion.

The retinal artery carries oxygen-rich blood to the retina. When a blockage occurs, the retina’s light-sensitive cells begin to suffocate from lack of oxygen.

Unless blood flow to the retina can be quickly restored, these cells will die. This can cause permanent and often substantial loss of vision.

Retinal artery occlusion usually is sudden and painless. It almost always involves just one eye, although the second eye may be affected in the future. If a main vessel becomes occluded, a person will likely lose the vision in that eye. He or she may be able to see a hand moving, but probably won’t know it’s a hand, or be able to count fingers.

If a blockage occurs in a smaller vessel, there may be partial vision loss or no symptoms. Sometimes, there is a warning: Trouble seeing in one eye that comes and goes – and then comes and stays.

Most cases of a blocked retinal artery result from a blood clot. The clot may form in the retinal artery, or it may travel there through the bloodstream from elsewhere in the body.

The retinal vein carries blood away from the retina. When the vein is blocked,

Dear Abby: I often see parents “help” their elementary school-age kids violate safety laws. In yesterday’s column featuring this deal, South was in four spades.

He learned that West, who passed as dealer, held the club queen-jack (from his opening lead), the spade queen (after drawing two rounds of trumps) and the heart ace (from playing on that suit before touching diamonds). So, deducing diamonds wasn’t difficult.

Today, it is harder in four hearts after West leads his singleton spade queen. How should South plan the play?

In the auction, after North correctly rebid two spades, South moved with three hearts, aware that North might have only three spades and five (or six!) hearts. Then North raised to four hearts, thinking that the 4-4 fit would be preferable to the 5-3 (which is typically the case).

South, believing it much more likely that West had led a singleton than from Q-J-10, won with his spade king and played on trumps. West took the second round and shifted to a low diamond.

Now the contract was on the line.

If declarer misguessed, he would lose one heart, two diamonds and one spade ruff. Note that South did not know about West’s club honors. Still, leading a singleton when holding both aces would be unappealing -where would partner’s entry be? So declarer played dummy’s diamond deuce and made his contract.
