Sears, Roebuck & Company Complex – Chicago In the mid-19th century, a series of events gave birth to a new and highly successful American industry – the mail-order catalog.

The construction of railroad lines across the United States, the introduction of new consumer goods after the Civil War, and the advances of new printing technology all drew the industry to Chicago, which soon would become the hub of mail-order commerce.

Mail-order retailing became a big business in Chicago during the last decades of the nineteenth century, and the city became the headquarters for Montgomery Ward and Co., Sears, Roebuck & Co., and other smaller companies.

Montgomery Ward and Co., the world’s first giant mail-order enterprise, started in Chicago in 1872, just shortly after the fire of 1871. Ward’s company tried to convince rural consumers to buy a variety of goods through the mail. By 1893, Ward’s was receiving 15,000 mail orders a day.

Richard Warren Sears, a stationmaster in a small Minnesota town, got his retailing start in the 1886 when a shipment of gold watches went unclaimed.

At first, Sears sold the watches for the company that shipped them, but within a year started his own company, the R.W. Sears Watch Co. Sears joined forces with watch repairman Alvah C. Roebuck in 1887 and ultimately moved the business to Chicago because of its central location in the country and its access to an adequate transportation network.

By 1893, Sears had changed the name of his company to Sears, Roebuck and Co. and began to offer a much wider range of merchandise, to complete with Montgomery Ward.

By 1895, Sears and Roebuck relocated their company in Chicago and established their headquarters on West Adams Street.

was forced to move again to the corner of Fulton and Desplaines Streets.

Within 10 years, Sears had about nine thousand employees, and its annual sales were nearly $50 million. Much of the success of the business during this period was due to Julius Rosenwald, who became a partner in the business in 1895 and who help to transform the company into the world’s largest mail-order house.

In 1904, Sears, Roebuck and Co. bought 41.6 acres on Chicago west side and hired the architectural firm of Nimmons and Fellows to design a new distribution plant.

Ground was broken on the new complex on Jan. 24, 1905, and nearly seven thousand workers were hired for the

Most of the construction material was brought to the site by freight car, and it was estimated that 23 million bricks and nearly 15 million feet of lumber were used in the project.

In January 1906, the company transferred its entire operations into the new facility. The entire mail order plant was finally completed by October 1906 and included a five-story Administration Building, a six-story Merchandise Development and Laboratory Building, a nine-story Mail Order Plant, and a one-story Power Plant.

The L-shaped, six-story Merchandise Development and Laboratory Building served as the printing plant for the famous Sears catalogue.

Like Wards, Sears issued giant catalogs and succeeded in attracting orders for a variety of goods from hundreds of thousands of rural customers.

The most notable exterior feature of the Mail Order Plant is the centrally located square-shaped, 14-story entrance tower. The tower was used chiefly for office space, but also included an observation deck. On the first floor, near the tower, was the location of the original Sears retail store, which opened in 1925.

Today, the tower is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is now the John D. and Alexandra C. Nicholas Tower. The Nicholas’ generosity supported substantial renovation of the old tower.

Until the 110-story Sears Tower was built in 1973, the world’s tallest building at the time, the Sears, Roebuck and Company Complex on South Homan Avenue served as the firm’s headquarters.

In 1978, 16 acres of the original 41.6acre complex was declared a National Historic Landmark. The Mail Order Plant was demolished except for the tower to make way for the Homan Square Community Center Campus.

Cloudy skies didn’t rain on cancer survivors’ parade at Relay For Life

Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – Patty Adler has been an event leader for Relay for Life since 2002. But the relay took on an entirely different meaning this year for the Adler family.

“This is hard. My brother-in-law Mike Adler died of cancer this past Tuesday, so this event hits close to home this year. It’s personal,” Patty Adler said.

Adler said this is why the goal of Relay for Life has always been to show hope and to let those who have cancer know they do not walk alone, as well as fund cancer research.

“I truly believe cancer research has come a long way, but money is needed to fund the research,” she said. “There will be a cure, and it could be sitting in a vial somewhere and until there is enough money to do the research, that cure may just sit in that vial.”

ATI Field at Joliet Memorial Stadium was filled with 757 participants within 73 teams from noon to midnight Saturday to support the annual Relay for Life fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. This signature event began in 1985; it has been held in Joliet since 2001. Other local communities also hold Relay events; Plainfield’s, for instance, will have it June 11.

Team Mettilles Against Cancer started Relay in New Lenox before Joliet had its event, and has now been fundraising for 18 years after the loss of the patriarch of the family, James “Big Daddy” Mettille.

“I lost my husband to brain cancer in 1991,” Betty Mettille said. “We hope for a cure and feel that any money raised is one step closer.”

Although the day began rainy and cold, the track was lined with tents filled with willing walkers. Others offered food, crafts and goods to help raise money for their teams.

People came out for the opening ceremonies at noon with hooded sweatshirts and rain ponchos ready to begin the event.

Event leads Patty Adler, Jenny Adler and Julie Sterr began opening ceremonies. Joliet Mayor Bob O’Dekirk shared a proclamation that June was Relay for Life month in Joliet, while Will County Executive Larry Walsh Sr. gave testimony on his own battle with prostate cancer.

and Glen Marcum approached the podium as the Relay for Life Heroes of Hope. Marcum read an emotional poem called “I Have Cancer, but Cancer Doesn’t Have Me.” Ford shared how faith can be a light when faced with cancer.

“I thought I was too young to have cancer, and my hair was too long.

I didn’t want to lose my hair. I give thanks and praise to God because there is hope. If you keep the faith in God and build a solid faith with Jesus

Christ, anything is possible,” Ford said.

The Relay began with a survivors lap around the track, followed by a lap for the caregivers of those survivors.

Patty Adler said new this year was a survivors and caregivers tent.

“The whole event was about the survivors who are with us today and the unsung heroes that are the caregivers. This was an area where they could have a snack, get a massage, share stories and offer support,” Adler said.

At 4 p.m., survivors attended a survivors dinner at the multipurpose room at Inwood Athletic Club, next to the field. At 9 p.m. luminaria bags were placed around the track in remembrance of those who lost the battle or who are in the midst of a fight.

Bicentennial Park adds events and staff

Summer activities at Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park will be busy this summer.

The park has new events, more staff and is adding something different to its traditional activities.

Even the park fountain is slated to be fixed this year, although it will not be quite the same as it used to be.

“We’re definitely trying to develop more events and more family-friendly events,” said Debbie Greene, who was hired in May as the park’s community development director.

Returning this summer is the Independence Day weekend fireworks show, which will be July 2. The park also is bringing back a shorter version of the old Waterway Daze, which was a three-day event. River Fest will be held on one day – July 23.

Greene’s job in part is to generate more money to fund events and activities at the park. She was hired by the park board, which raises funds and runs the park with the city.

The city owns Bicentennial Park and pays for other park staff, including a park manager. The park manager position has not been filled since Rich Liebich retired a year ago. But the city is interviewing candidates this week and intends to fill the position, City Manager Jim Hock said.

The fountain won’t be quite what it used to be, said Jeff Barnes, secretary of the Will-Joliet Bicentennial Park Inc. Board. The fountain in past years became an issue because too many people were wandering into it, he said.

“You won’t be able to swim in it,” Barnes said.

But the park board and city have joined together to bring back more activity to the park, he said.

“We’re very excited that we were able to hire the community development director,” Barnes said. “We’re even more excited that the city is bringing back a park manager. That’s why the board is willing to do these additional two and maybe three events.”

The possible third event would be a return of a fall festival, although that has not been decided.

The old Pumpkinfest, as well as Waterway Daze and a Father’s Day car

show, ended as the city made budget cuts during the recession.

Barnes noted that the cost of police security alone at the last three-day Waterway Daze was $17,000, and it was a free event.

The park also is adding an Art 4 Every 1 art show Aug. 20, when artists from Cornerstone Services and other agencies that serve people with disabilities will display their works.

Interim Park Manager Deanna Opsahl said the event was inspired by the Cornerstone art show held in April at the Joliet Area Historical Museum.

“We’re looking forward to this summer in many ways,” Opsahl said. “One will be to be more busy.”

Joliet D-204 alumni reunite to support after-school, arts programs

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Alumni who were part of step teams at Joliet Township High School District 204 in the late 1990s and early 2000s have reunited this year to support students through fundraising.

The alumni group United In Excellence includes former students of the UIE step team that was founded in 1996 and ran as an official District 204 after-school program from 1998 to 2004.

Despite the time and distance that has grown between alumni of the after-school step team and the district, they have come together with a pledge to raise $50,000 for students involved in after-school and arts education programs.

(Washington) Gaither, UIE co-founder and a 1997 Central graduate. Gaither works for East Baltimore Development Inc. Erick Deshaun Dorris, a 1999 Central graduate, is also a co-founder for UIE. “It’s a team effort,” Dorris said.

Dorris – who said he was and still is a band, choir and theater geek – has worked with Chicago Public Schools and with art organizations throughout the Chicago area.

UIE has partnered with the Joliet Township High Schools Foundation, with the foundation acting as the fiscal agent for all sponsorship, according to a District 204 news release.

Sponsorship dollars will fund a small-grants program that will be available to district teachers and staff for after-school and arts education programs.

District officials stated in the news release there is also an event slated to take place Nov. 12 at Central, 201 E. Jefferson St., to include performances

by UIE alumni, guest artists and cur-

rent students.

The production is designed to serve as a “beacon of advocacy for student programs at the high schools with 100 percent sponsorship and ticket sales directly benefiting students,” according to the news release.

Gaither said a lot of UIE alumni are parents now and many see the need for funding arts and after-school programs for schools, since they are a morale booster for students.

“It gives kids the opportunity to see themselves in a different light,” she said.

Gaither and Dorris established step teams Sisters of Excellence and Brothers of Excellence in 1996 and 1997, respectively.

In 1998, the UIE step team was formally recognized by the district as an after-school program, bringing the two groups together.

N.B. Galloway teacher’s last day of school The last day of school can be particularly hard on teachers, said N.B. Galloway Elementary kindergarten teacher Donna Szoke.

Saying goodbye to the children you’ve worked so closely with all year is tough.

“With kindergarten, you see the growth in the students, coming in with just the basics, and by the time they leave they are reading, writing sentences and doing math,” she said. “It’s so rewarding to see how much they have grown since that first day.”

Szoke’s last day of school this year was also her last day of fulltime teaching; she has retired after nearly three decades working with children.

Szoke started her career in education working with children with special needs, which she did for seven years. She then became a teacher’s aide for several years.

But she wanted to do more, so she returned to the University of St. Francis where she got her bachelor’s degree then completed her master’s degree in education.

Kitty Johnston has worked with Szoke since her own first year of teaching – from the time Szoke was an aide through the last day of school in May. Johnston calls Szoke ambitious, a hard worker and a great friend.

She always was impressed that Szoke went back to complete her master’s.

“Donna is always very passionate about what she does; you are not going to find anyone more loyal,” Johnston said. “She cares about you as a teacher and a friend. You can’t work with her and not like her.”

Principal Mary Kelly started at Galloway just a year before Szoke

retired. But she has the same respect for Szoke as her longtime co-workers.

“Mrs. Szoke is a wonderful teacher,” Kelly said. “Donna cares very much for every child in her class, and there is no doubt her presence at the school will be missed very much.”

Besides her love of kids, Johnston said, Szoke is known as a great practical joker, both giving and receiving them.

During the weeks leading up to last Christmas, the school was focused on kindness and had their first “Grinch” week.

Szoke made a Christmas Grinch using the face of co-worker Deb Litt.

The character became the talk of the school, and everyone had a good laugh, Kelly said.

The staff decided to get back at her next Christmas, but once her retirement was announced, they put their plan into action much sooner.

School secretary Susan Sprouse and Litt created an entire group of “Whoville” characters using pictures of staff, including Szoke, for

the faces and lined the copy room with them, creating “Donnaville.”

The characters still hang in the room today, Kelly said.

While leaving Galloway is tough, Szoke plans to be on the substitute teacher list, where she still will be able to see many of the students she has taught over the years.

“Long after [students] are out of her class, they are eager to greet her with a smile and a hug in the hallway,” said Kelly.

Because of a family emergency on the last day of school, Szoke had to leave early and wasn’t able to say goodbye to her students.

In the fall she will return for a proper send-off with her former students and co-workers.

“I loved going to work at Galloway,” Szoke said. “Part of the reason was the staff – it’s like a family over there. It just made for a fun work environment.”

The primary objective of the C.N.A. in hospice care is to provide comfort, compassion and respect for the patient. This is of utmost importance. While many individuals are able to perform their ADL’s independently, it often comes as a burden to their overall well being. The simple act of bathing can be very fatiguing and diminish the quality of one’s day.

Utilization of a C.N.A. can improve the well being of a patient and provide a much needed support system for their loved ones.

Summer’s here, and that means more motorcycles on the road. But, with proper precautions by motorcyclists and those with whom they share the roads, motorcycle crashes can be avoided.

In 2014, there were 3,411 motorcycle crashes in Illinois, according to Illinois Department of Transportation statistics cited in a Silver Cross Hospital news release. Of those crashes, 120 were fatal and 2,693 resulted in injured motorcyclists.

During the summer in Channahon, police see at least one motorcycle crash a week, Channahon Police Chief Jeff Wold said.

“It’s a concern,” he said. “There’s things you can do like wear your helmet, wear the safety gear,” he said.

About two weeks ago, a semitrailer turned in front of a motorcycle at Route 6 and Interstate 55 in Channahon and the motorcyclists hit the side of the semi, according to Wold, who said because the motorcycle driver was wearing a helmet, the driver’s injuries were not life-threatening. In addition to a helmet, Wold advised motorcyclists to wear a heavy jacket, gloves and boots.

Silver Cross Hospital specified in its news release that a motorcyclist’s helmet should be Department of Transportation compliant and protective gear should be

brightly colored.

“By wearing a helmet and other safety gear, motorcyclists can greatly reduce the amount of injury they suffer in a crash,” Dr. Daniel Checco, medical director of Silver Cross Urgent Care in Joliet, said in the news release. That’s important, because, according to Wold, a motorcyclist who is in a crash has a relatively high chance of severe injury.

To keep those crashes from happening, Wold said motorcyclists should slow down on curves, wet pavement and gravel. Silver Cross advises them to avoid riding in inclement weather, use both turn and hand signals for every turn or lane change, and use reflective tape to increase visibility.

New motorcyclists should take a safety course, Wold said, and consult with more experienced riders to get a vehicle that fits properly. Those who share the road with motorcyclists can keep them safe by allowing them a full lane width, checking mirrors and blind spots before entering or leaving a lane and at intersections, signaling before changing lanes or merging, and allowing additional following distance behind motorcycles, according to Silver Cross.

And, of course, motorcyclists – like all drivers – should never drink and drive.

Wold noted the Channahon area’s last two fatal motorcycle crashes were alcohol-related.

Cathy also supported her family with the same passion she advocated for literacy. She attended her children’s sporting activities when they were growing up and encouraged David in his music.

Tera Davis said Cathy extended the same support to her when Tera began dating David.

“She thought it was great that I had my master’s degree and was a speech pathologist,” Tera Davis said.

Cathy was also an avid Scrabble player, but she didn’t beat Ryan very often.

But Cathy’s final Scrabble score is not what people will remember about her.

CREST HILL – Soon, Chaney-Monge School will have a Little Free Library outside its front door. The library is in honor of Cathy Davis of Plainfield, a former student, teacher and principal at this Crest Hill school, who passionately promoted family literacy.

Cathy died July 23, 2015, at age 63.

Several months later, Jill Carter, reading interventionist at Chaney-Monge School, learned how Little Free Libraries can help foster literacy and thought of Cathy.

“She was an avid reader,” Jill said.

“She instilled the love of reading to her students and to the staff at ChaneyMonge. She really focused on literacy and community building. We just thought it was a good fit for her.”

According to its website, a Little Free Library is a free exchange of books.

There are more than 40,000 of these exchange sites around the world, the website stated. The community is free to take a book – returning it is optional – and leave a book in its place, which provides a continual renewal of materials.

Jill said David Skoryi, chief of the Lockport Township Fire Protection

District, and his wife, Deb – parents of Jessica Skoryi, a teacher at ChaneyMonge who also attended the school – built the library. An area artist is creating a mosaic for it. The mosaic will incorporate Cathy’s favorite colors, love of gardening and favorite book: “I’ll Love You Forever,” Jill said.

When completed, the library will hold about 30 books for children and adults, Jill said.

“We’ll plant a garden around it as well,” she said.

At home, Cathy had her own “little library” of books she amassed through the years. Cathy’s favorite read? Biographies, said her son, David Davis of Plainfield.

“Education was always her thing,” said Cathy’s son, Ryan Davis of Plainfield. “She always wanted to see people improve and be the best they could be.

We always wanted to learn. That was normal for us. It was something she instilled in us.”

Cathy graduated from Chaney in 1966, Lockport West High School in 1970 and Aurora College in 1974.

She earned her master’s degree at Lewis University in Romeoville. After teaching gym at Grand Prairie Ele-

Ronald Chaney, age 82 ,of Wilmington, passed away, June 4, 2016, at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home.

Born July 26, 1933, in Harrisburg, IL, Ronald Gene was a son of the late James Robert and Geneva (Quick) Chaney. He was raised and educated in Wilmington and Carrier Mills, IL, and a 1951 graduate of Harrisburg HS. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, and honorably served during the Korean Conflict. Ron owned and operated Chaney Refrigeration in Wilmington, and formerly served on the Will County Board. He was a member of the A.F. & A.M. Wilmington Lodge #208, American Legion Post #103 in Punta Gorda, Florida, The Fraternal Order of Eagles Lodge #3296 in Port Charlotte, Florida and the Deep Creek Elks Lodge #2763 in Punta Gorda. Ron was a Chicago Cubs fan, who enjoyed his winters in Florida and spending time with his friends and family.

Budget fight erodes programs for at-risk teens

ROCKFORD – After a rash of armed robberies and carjackings startled Rockford residents this year, police recognized a few teenagers among those arrested in an ensuing crackdown.

The youths had been enrolled in a state-funded program called Redeploy Illinois, which is almost universally praised as an alternative to jail that diverts troubled youths from further crime. But because of a loss of funding in Illinois’ unprecedented budget impasse, a Rockford-area nonprofit ended its program in October, leaving some 40 juveniles without the one-on-one attention they’d been receiving.

Within months, police said some of those teens were re-arrested, including after 14 robberies on one January day.

“When all these social service agencies are cut, the only public agency left to pick up the pieces is law enforcement. We’re not equipped to do that,” said Pat Hoey, Rockford’s assistant deputy police chief. “You can’t arrest your way out of youth violence crime issues.”

Redeploy is just one example in which the gridlock between first-term Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democrats controlling the Legislature is eroding programs to keep youth away from criminal and child welfare sys-

PEORIA – Illinois lawmakers have convened a task force to investigate a spike in the theft of recyclable metals.

There was a spike in thefts a few years ago when the price of copper and other recyclable metals rose. Copper wiring and pipes have been ripped from homes, signs and air conditioners have been stolen, and even metal grates over storm drains have been taken.

As a result, the Recyclable Metal Theft Task Force formed, in an effort to look into what can be done about all recyclable metals. Bartonville Police Chief Brian Fengel, who sits on the task force, told the Journal Star that it’s working with

Of Illinois’ 102 counties, 45 had Redeploy working with roughly 700 juveniles annually – a more than decade-long program that officials boasted helped drastically cut youth prison populations. Nearly $5 million in state

funds went to Redeploy programs statewide, and the state even revamped the program’s website recently, but nothing has been paid since last summer, leading to more than 100 teens being cut off, according to state data.

Last week, lawmakers adjourned

law enforcement, utilities, the scrapping industry and insurance associations to determine how the thefts can be reduced.

Potential ideas are enforcing tougher prosecution and establishing better lines of connection between scrap yards and police. Fengel said a report is due in the fall.

Mary Ellen Commare, executive director of Youth Services Network, a nonprofit which gets $306,000 for Redeploy near Rockford, said she gets calls daily from families since scaling back juvenile services such as Redeploy.

“It puts more kids on the street which puts them at danger and puts other people at risk of being victims,” she said.

Four of Illinois’ 13 regional Redeploy programs – based in Winnebago, Montgomery, Lee and Macon counties – have closed their doors, with others scaling back or shuffling juveniles into other programs. But Redeploy organizers say the impact is even greater because of staff layoffs and many remaining programs refusing to take new juveniles.

Also, Illinois’ system to provide emergency help to around 7,000 youths, such as runaways, is disintegrating in some of the poorest and highest-crime areas, including Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood, where a program serving 70 teenagers closed this year because of halted state funding.

The cutbacks come as Illinois has made noticeable gains in addressing troubled juvenile populations, including reducing the number of incarcerated youth to less than 500 from a peak of over 3,000 in 2000.

Historic abandoned Peoria theater damaged by fire

PEORIA – An abandoned yet historic Peoria theater has been damaged after a fire broke out inside.

The Peoria Journal Star reported the fire ignited late Saturday inside the Madison Theater in downtown Peoria.

Officials said the fire was sparked in the backstage area of the theater before spreading. Streets and a nearby bar were closed as firefighters worked to put out flames.

Investigators are now looking for a cause. They have not said how much damage was caused.

Islamic State kills its own in hunt for spies

BAGHDAD – In March, a senior commander with the Islamic State group was driving through northern Syria on orders to lead militants in the fighting there when a drone blasted his vehicle to oblivion.

The killing of Abu Hayjaa al-Tunsi, a Tunisian jihadi, sparked a panicked hunt within the group’s ranks for spies who could have tipped off the U.S-led coalition about his closely guarded movements. By the time it was over, the group would kill 38 of its own members on suspicion of acting as informants.

They were among dozens of IS members killed by their own leadership in recent months in a vicious purge after a string of airstrikes killed prominent figures. Others have disappeared into prisons and still more have fled, fearing they could be next as the jihadi group turns on itself in the hunt for moles, according to Syrian opposition activists, Kurdish militia commanders, several Iraqi intelligence officials and an informant for the Iraqi government who worked within IS ranks.

The fear of informants has fueled paranoia among the militants’ ranks. A mobile phone or internet connection can raise suspicions. As a warning to others, IS has displayed the bodies of some suspected spies in public – or used particularly gruesome methods, including reportedly dropping some into a vat of acid.

IS “commanders don’t dare come from Iraq to Syria because they are being liquidated” by airstrikes, said Bebars al-Talawy, an opposition activist in Syria who monitors the group.

Over the past months, American officials have said that the U.S. has killed a string of

top commanders from the group, including its “minister of war” Omar al-Shishani, feared Iraqi militant Shaker Wuhayeb, also known as Abu Wahib, as well as a top finance official known by several names, including Haji Iman, Abu Alaa al-Afari or Abu Ali Al-Anbari.

In the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, the biggest city held by IS across its “caliphate” stretching across Syria and Iraq, a succession of militants who held the post of “wali,” or governor, in the province have died in airstrikes.

As a result, those appointed to governor posts have asked not to be identified and they limit their movements, the Iraqi informant told The Associated Press. Iraqi intelligence officials allowed the AP to speak by phone with the informant, who spoke on condition of anonymity, fearing for his life.

The purge comes at a time when IS has lost ground in both Syria and Iraq. An Iraqi government offensive recaptured the western city of Ramadi from IS earlier this year, and another mission is underway to retake the nearby city of Fallujah.

Rami Abdurrahman, who heads the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said some IS fighters began feeding information to the coalition about targets and movements of the group’s officials because they needed money after the extremist group sharply reduced salaries in the wake of coalition and Russian airstrikes on IS-held oil facilities earlier this year. The damage and the loss of important IS-held supply routes into Turkey have reportedly hurt the group’s financing.

“They have executed dozens of fighters on charges of giving information to the coalition or putting (GPS) chips in order for the aircraft to strike at a specific area,” said Abdurrahman, referring to IS in Syria.

Our area featured many interesting story lines; and, in most cases, baseball and softball teams from local schools were able to make the most of their opportunities.

As a result, we still have five teams heading into the final week of the 2015-16 season. With a head-tohead matchup, we’re assured of at least one team at state, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we have as many as four squads that will be competing in this weekend’s state finals at Silver Cross Field and in East Peoria.

All of that will be determined Monday at various supersectional sites. Collect a win, and a team is guaranteed of receiving a trophy for a top-four finish at state.

Perhaps the most intriguing matchup will take place far away at the University of Illinois campus in Champaign when two-time defending Class 4A baseball champion Providence Catholic meets first-time sectional winner Plainfield South in a 4:30 p.m. contest.

Coach Mark Smith’s Celtics have been fantastic during the past three postseasons. They’ve won 18 straight games in their quest for an unprecedented title three-peat.

What really is amazing is that in the 12 games they’ve played in sectionals, supersectionals and the state finals during that span, they’ve won 10 contests that were decided by a run or were one-run games going into the seventh.

The last chapter in that saga occurred Saturday at Providence’s Tom Dedin Field in New Lenox, when sentimental-favorite Lincoln-Way North tried to stay alive for another day and looked as if might do so after taking a 1-0 lead into the seventh. But the Celtics scored four runs to claim a 4-1 win.

Meanwhile, coach Phil Bodine’s Cougars are feeling pretty confident about their chances after beating a good O’Fallon squad, 13-3, in the Illinois Wesleyan Sectional.

No Southside squad in any sport has advanced to the state’s final four in an elimination tournament. The Cougars have nothing to lose, while the pressure obviously is on the Celtics, so we’ll see if they can keep their historic playoff winning streak going.

Saturday was a banner day for District 202 as Plainfield North claimed an 11-3 victory over Neuqua Valley in the Oswego Sectional final, which was moved to Joliet Junior College.

After pulling off a shocking comefrom-behind win over Plainfield Central in a sectional semifinal, coach John Darlington’s squad now can set its sights on it 7:30 p.m. game with St. Laurence at the Crestwood Supersectional at Standard Bank Stadium.

North is motivated to avoid what happened to it a year ago in the same setting, when it lost a heartbreaker to

Mount Carmel. North not only hasn’t advanced any teams to the state’s final four in an elimination tournament, but it also hasn’t won any trophies for top-four finishes.

Before the Tigers step onto the field in Crestwood, Lemont will play De La Salle in a 5 p.m. Class 3A supersectional at the same facility.

Coach Brian Storako’s Indians will try to assure themselves of a second trophy in the past three years. In 2014, Lemont captured the Class 3A championship. The Indians rolled past Herscher, 11-1, Saturday at Lincoln-Way West; and with good pitching lined up, they seem well-positioned to make another title run this year.

Just one softball team still is in the hunt, but it’s a pretty good one – Lincoln-Way East. Coach Elizabeth Pawlicki’s squad beat Homewood-Flossmoor, 2-0, in Saturday’s Lockport Sectional final.

With one more win, the Griffins will become the first softball program from the area to capture three straight trophies for top-four state finishes. They hope to assure that in their 4:30 p.m. Class 4A Illinois State University Supersectional contest in Normal against Normal West.

East has plenty of motivation to get back to state, considering it dropped a heartbreaker to Marist in

last year’s championship game.

Three area softball teams came up one victory shy of advancing to today’s supersectionals. Coach Jean Ryan-Moak’s Bolingbrook team, coach Heather Novak’s Lincoln-Way West squad and coach Chris Traina’s Lemont team all advanced to the sectional finals. The Raiders and Warriors were making their first appearances at that level.

The good news for all three squads is that they only graduate a few seniors, so things indeed look bright for those programs during the next few seasons.

And congratulations definitely are in order for one of the legendary coaches from this area, Reed-Custer’s Jerry Cougill, who led his squad to the Class 2A baseball title Saturday in Peoria.

The Comets saw an early 5-0 lead slip away but scored a run in the eighth inning to beat St. Joseph-Ogden, 7-6, for the title. Reed-Custer has won two state championships in elimination series, and they both were won by the baseball program, with the other back in 1985.

It’s been a great spring, and hopefully there are more highlights on its final weekend.

The turning point came on the 398-yard 14th. Burry had gotten up and down to save par from 60 yards on the 441-yard 12th, then sank a 20-footer for a birdie on the 14th.

“That was pretty big,” Burry said.

to break a tie with Netzel, who was a group ahead, and Huston Gass, who was two groups ahead.

Slammers complete their first sweep of the season

cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – After seeing his squad sweep their first series of the Frontier League season, Jeff Isom is hoping that the Joliet Slammers finally are starting to put things together.

They saw some positive signs during the weekend series against Gateway at Silver Cross Field, and the Slammers manager is hoping that they continue to perform well.

And while Sunday’s 7-3 victory over the Grizzlies was by no means a work of art, the fact that Joliet allowed 12 other baserunners besides the four who got hits and was never in any real danger of falling behind was encour-

aging.

“We’re at .500, and I feel like we haven’t played our best baseball,” Isom said. “We walked 10 guys and are fortunate that we didn’t give up hits behind that. We continue to swing the bats well, and we’ve got threats throughout our lineup. And we run the bases well and get guys on, steal some bags and get them into scoring position. Defensively, we’ve been playing well.

“I like the makings of what we’ve got, and hopefully this is a sign of good things to come. We’ve got to get better pitching, but that’s always a question mark. The key for our team is that we have to get good pitching for us to be over the .500-mark to be a playoff team.”

The Slammers (11-11) finished with 11 hits, which included four home runs. Those shots by Boo Vazquez, Carter Bell (three RBIs), Joe Staley and Marc Flores (3 for 3, two RBIs) drove in all of Joliet’s seven runs in the game.

Vazquez hit a solo shot in the first, and league RBI leader Bell added a three-run blast in the third to make it 4-0. After Gateway (9-13) scored twice in the fourth, the next long ball led to a bench-clearing incident in the bottom of that frame.

After Staley homered, Phil Bates was hit by a pitch from losing pitcher Trevor Richards. After the fracas ended, five players were ejected from the contest.

In the fifth, Flores hit a two-run shot

to close the scoring. Charlie White also went 3 for 5 to boost the Slammers’ attack.

Sean Townsley collected the victory after going the first five innings. After Tyler Levine yielded a hit in 11⁄3 innings, Brent Choban got the save after allowing no hits and striking out three in 22⁄3 innings.

“In some games, we’d pitch but wouldn’t hit, and in others we’d hit and wouldn’t pitch – but in this series, we put it all together and played solid defense,” Vazquez said. “We got big outs when we needed to from our pitchers, and everybody did what we needed to win. We have a great group of guys and coaches, and we’re starting to figure out how to put it all together.”

JOLIET – Zach Burry thought it would be a good idea to drive four hours from his home in Quincy and spend the weekend with some college pals, including Illinois State teammate Trent Wallace, to tee it up in the 51st Joliet Amateur.

Smart kid.

Burry, who’ll be a junior in the fall, fired back-to-back 67s Saturday and Sunday at Wedgewood Golf Course, with his total of 10-under-par 134 good for a three-stroke victory over Charlie Netzel of Western Springs.

“This is big,” Burry said.

“I’d been searching for something. I felt I’d been playing better than I had been – just hadn’t put the rounds together. To finally be able to trust what I’ve been doing, it’s nice to see it pay off, especially in a tournament like this.”

All 67s are not created equal. Saturday’s was achieved in calm winds and on a course considerably shorter than Sunday’s, when the wind blew and made some club selection a gamble.

“Today was much tougher,” Burry said. “Yesterday, I had three three-putts and still shot 67. Today was longer and

ball curled around the cup before stopping behind it.

Burry considered it his biggest win since capturing the Little Peoples’ Junior at 17 back in Quincy.

Netzel, who will be a senior at Michigan State in the fall, added a 70 to his opening 67, but was victimized by the golf gods at the end. He sank a trio of 15-footers, but left putts on several holes, including the 16th and 17th, handing on the lip.

“I didn’t birdie the par-5s, which is kind of frustrating,” Netzel said. “And my putting, everything was on the edge. Some days, the ball just doesn’t go in.”

Wright, from Aurora, was in a trio tied at 5-under 139. He was joined by Streator’s Huston Gass and Plainfield’s Nick Corban. That duo each scored 71, while Wright – at 48 the oldest contender in the field – fired a 73 in advance of a week that includes CDGA Championship and Illinois Open qualifying rounds.

“I didn’t have that much control over my ball today,” Wright said. “Even if I was playing well, I don’t catch (Burry).”

Burry’s total of 134 was third best in Joliet Amateur history.

The record of 12-under 132 is held by Carlos Sainz Jr., who scored 12-under 132 in 2009.

Relays ended on high note for area runners

cherron@shawmedia.com Redemption was on the minds of several athletes who competed in relays at the recent IHSA boys track and field finals in Charleston.

For those from Minooka, it was about making amends from the previous year, when the Indians didn’t make the awards stand in any relay after claiming nine medals during the previous four years.

And for Plainfield North, it concerned bouncing back from a crushing disqualification in the preliminaries in the Tigers’ best relay.

The Indians went on to record their best state showing in two of their three relays, while the Tigers bounced back with one of their best-ever finishes in a relay at the state meet.

Minooka turned in its best finish in the 4x100, which was second to East St. Louis by just .09 seconds. That relay consisted of junior Colin Marchio, senior Maceo Findlay, sophomore Brandon Adams and senior Justin Wolz, who all came back later to run in the 4x200, which took third place. The school’s previous-best finishes in both relays were sixths in 2014.

“Last year didn’t go as well as we

thought it would,” Findlay said. “We put in a lot of work so that we could make it to this point, where we were blessed to be able to stand on the podium and be all-state athletes. We used that pain as redemption so that we would come out hard, and that’s what we’ve been doing this year, and what this school plans to do in the future.”

The Indians were hoping to win the title in the 4x200, but Neuqua Valley prevailed once again, and East St. Louis nipped Minooka at the wire to result in a third-place finish.

“I’ve never run with a better group of people,” Marchio said. “This will probably be my most memorable year in high school. This was a great experience and is really good for motivating us to want to get better and push ourselves through the hard times next year. It’s been a long season, and I’ve had to work my butt off without our actual sprint coach being here.”

Wolz and Adams got back on the awards stand one final time as they were again bested by East St. Louis and Neuqua in the 4x400 relay. Sophomore Aaron Arroyo took the baton from Wolz while Adams ran the third leg; and senior Matt Dlugopolski, who won a medal on the 4x200 in 2014, finished up. They placed third and posted a new

school-best time.

“I’ve just been trying to help everyone get a championship,” Adams said.

“I’ve tried to do as much as I can so my teammates would be happy and I would be happy. To be able to race against all of these good teams and good people pushes me harder so that I can do better.”

Those efforts played a big role in Minooka claiming seventh place with 29 points, which was its best-ever showing in the large-school meet, two places better than its 2011 finish.

North’s 4x100 ran just behind Minooka in the sectional and figured to be a title contender; but after things went awry in the preliminaries, the same lineup had no choice but to try to end on a high note with a strong showing in the 4x200 relay.

And the lineup of junior Carlos Baggett, senior Clay Paysen, sophomore Joe Stiffend and senior Hunter Houslet did just that by placing fifth in the finals.

“I felt that our 4x100 was our best relay, and we got DQ’ed in it, which was a huge shame because I thought that we could have placed first in state,” Paysen said. “It was devastating, and I was super upset. But we had a long talk with coach [Tony] Holler that put

us back in the mood to run and focused again. And we definitely came out here and proved ourselves.”

It was the Tigers’ ninth state medal in relay events in seven years, with the 4x200 placing at state four times. A year ago, North placed in both the 4x100 and 4x200, but none of this year’s lineup competed on those all-state squads.

“After we were DQ’ed, we were pretty sad since we worked so hard the whole season to do well in the 4x100,” Houslet said. “But we regrouped ourselves and decided that it wasn’t over yet since we had another opportunity.

We qualified for finals and showed that we belonged at state. Clay and I weren’t going to have another chance, so I’m glad we got fifth in the 4x200.”

Lockport also earned a medal in the 4x200 as the all-senior lineup of Chris Gargano, Derrius Rodgers, Jesse Bustami and Sheldon Snapp finished just behind North to take sixth place. Only one other 4x200 relay won a medal for the school, a third-place finisher in 1993.

Rodgers also was runner-up in the 100 and 200, making him just the third Porter athlete to win three medals at a state meet. That helped Lockport to score 30 points as it finished in sixth place, its best-ever large-school meet showing.

CHICAGO – Jake Arrieta had been winning at such a remarkable rate that it was almost jarring to see the reigning NL Cy Young Award winner lose a game.

Yes, it finally happened.

Arrieta’s franchise-record streak ended at 20 wins when Patrick Corbin and the struggling Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Cubs, 3-2, Sunday.

“Well, it was a good run,” Arrieta said.

It was one that stretched over 24 regular-season starts since he took the loss in Cole Hamels’ no-hitter for Philadelphia at Wrigley Field on July 25. Arrieta did lose to the New York Mets in the NL Championship Series last season and was 2-1 in the playoffs.

Arrieta (9-1) lasted five innings this time, allowing three runs and nine hits.

He threw 108 pitches and struck out a season-high 12 while walking one.

The Cubs lost for only the second time in 12 games and finished 8-2 on their homestand. Both losses came in starts by Arrieta after they won 23 in a row with him on the mound.

“Obviously, Jake is a human. He’s going to give it up sometimes,” catcher Miguel Montero said.

Arrieta, however, had been unbeatable during a historic run that placed

him among the game’s best. The 20 consecutive winning decisions tied him with Roger Clemens (1998-99) for thirdmost in the majors since 1913.

The Diamondbacks – who struck out a franchise record-tying 18 times – took a patient approach at the plate and wound up with hits nine of the 10 times they put the ball in play against Arrieta.

Corbin (3-5) went seven innings to lead Arizona to its second victory in seven games. The left-hander gave up two runs and five hits, struck out five and did not walk a batter.

“Everyone knows about his (Arrieta’s) story,” Corbin said. “It’s tough to go out there and face a guy like that.

It’s going to be tough. The team got a couple of runs early, which helped, and was able to keep them off the board just enough.”

Tyler Clippard pitched the eighth and Brad Ziegler worked the ninth for his 39th consecutive save and 11th this season. He walked pinch-hitter Anthony Rizzo with two outs before retiring Montero on a groundout.

Chris Hermann had three hits and scored a run for Arizona. Yasmany Tomas hit a two-run double and Paul Goldschmidt added an RBI single as the Diamondbacks avoided a three-game sweep.

Tigers shortstop Jose Iglesias saved Verlander in the top of the fifth, making a diving stop of Tyler Saladino’s one-out grounder to hold Jimmy Rollins at third. James McCann then grabbed Eaton’s bunt and threw him out at first to end the inning.

“That was a massive play by Iggy on Saladino, and then McCann makes a huge play a few seconds later,” Verlander said.

He allowed homers to Jose Abreu and Todd Frazier, but only gave up five hits and a walk while striking out eight.

Shane Greene and Francisco Rodriguez finished, with Rodriguez picking up his 15th save.

Left fielder Jason Coats, who needed five stitches in his mouth after an outfield collision ended his major league debut Saturday, was back in the lineup. DETROIT – Jose Quintana doesn’t make a lot of huge mistakes.

Sunday, not only did he make one, he let it rattle him.

With the Sox’s game against the Detroit Tigers tied in the fifth inning, Quintana walked J.D. Martinez with the bases loaded to force in the go-ahead run. The Sox went on to lose, 5-2.

“I have a lot of confidence in all of my pitches right now, but I just missed my spot a couple times today,” he said. “I’ve never walked anyone with the bases loaded before, and that changed the game for me.”

Nick Castellanos followed with an RBI single and Justin Upton drove a 3-0 fastball into the left field corner for a two-run double that ended Quintana’s day.

“That game is my responsibility,” he said after the Tigers finished off a 5-2 win. It was the first time this season he had failed to finish five innings.

Upton came into the game hitting .214 and had been dropped to seventh in manager Brad Ausmus’ batting order.

“He said that he’d been feeling better the last couple days, so I figured I’d give him the green light on 3-0 and see if he could get a fastball,” Ausmus said. “When a guy is struggling, there are times that you can get him going by giving him a shot at a pitch like that. Hopefully, this will help.”

Detroit came into the series having lost eight of its last 10 games against left-handed starters, but beat a trio of Sox lefties: Carlos Rodon, Chris Sale and Quintana.

“We knew we were going to hit lefties better than we have, especially with our lineup, but this was big,” Ausmus said. “Rodon’s a younger guy, but he’s got great upside, and Sale and Quintana are two of the best lefty starters in the game today.”

Warriors whip Cavs to take 2-0 lead

OAKLAND, Calif. – The repeat championship Golden State has spoken of since the very start more than eight months ago is suddenly two wins from becoming reality.

That’s the only way the Warriors’ record-setting season will feel right. They certainly look unstoppable.

Draymond Green flexed his bulging biceps with big plays on both ends of the floor all night for 28 points, seven rebounds and five assists, while MVP Stephen Curry scored 18 points despite foul trouble, and Golden State thoroughly overwhelmed the Cleveland Cavaliers, 110-77, in Game 2 of the NBA Finals on Sunday night.

Once the Splash Brothers found their shooting touch, Cleveland couldn’t keep up. Klay Thompson got hot after halftime to finish with 17 points and five assists as Golden State became the first team to go ahead 2-0 in the finals since the Lakers in 2009 against Orlando.

“What we’ve done the last few years, everybody, every night has an impact,” Curry said. “You don’t know where it’s going to come from any given night. We’ve got to keep our focus and our edge and hopefully get two more.”

Now, the series shifts to Cleveland, and LeBron James and the Cavs must show up for Game 3 on Wednesday in front of their title-starved fans down 2-0 to the defending champs and with forward Kevin Love dealing with a head injury.

ness early in the second half and left for the locker room to be re-examined, then was placed in the NBA’s concussion protocol. The league said he didn’t exhibit any symptoms before then, even after taking an elbow to the back of the head from Harrison Barnes in the second quarter and going down for several minutes before returning following a timeout. He made a baseline 3-pointer for the Cavs’ first basket in nearly 5½ minutes.

After a scoreless first quarter when he missed all five shots but had five assists, James scored 14 of his 19 points in the second and also finished with nine assists and eight rebounds. James’ teams had won nine straight postseason Game 2s after losing the series opener dating back to a loss in the 2008 Eastern Conference semifinals to Boston.

William McGirt wins Memorial in a playoff

DUBLIN, Ohio – William McGirt thought he hit it big when he won the Cabarrus Classic and pocketed $16,000, the second-largest prize on the Tar Heel Tour.

That was in 2007, and it felt like a lifetime ago compared with the perks from winning the Memorial on Sunday.

The victory was worth $1.53 million and a three-year exemption for a guy who once dreamed of simply having a PGA Tour card.

Waiting to congratulate him was tournament host Jack Nicklaus, who raved about the bunker shot on the 18th hole that kept McGirt in the playoff at Muirfield Village, and the flop shot from behind the 18th green that led to a 6-foot putt and his first PGA Tour victory in his 165th try.

McGirt won the way Nicklaus said he captured so many of his 73 times on the PGA Tour.

“I won half of my golf tournaments watching everyone else self-destruct,” Nicklaus said. “And that’s the way you win. I saw him coming down the stretch. I saw Jon coming down the stretch. The two of them played great. I felt that either one of them could have won.”

Dustin Johnson dropped three shots in four holes to start the back nine, and a fourth bogey on the 16th ended it for him.

Matt Kuchar was tied for the lead when he returned from a 90-minute rain delay and promptly hit the lip of a fairway bunker and made double bogey. He never recovered.

• Do not flush unused medicines or pour them down the drain. This is the most basic thing we all can, and should, avoid.

Instead, throw medications into the trash. Medications disposed of this way are incinerated or buried in landfills. This isn’t ideal, but it’s preferable to flushing or pouring them down the drain.

• Better yet, use drug take-back programs. These programs allow you to drop off unused medications at specified locations in your community. Drug takeback programs are organized by state and local governments and also by private institutions, including pharmacy chains.

There are nearly 6,000 locations around the United States.

While we don’t know of any harm to humans from the current low levels of old drugs in our drinking water, the truth is that we can’t be sure there is no harm.

That’s why I urge my patients to use these programs. It’s just one of many ways to help your fellow human beings, and also the fish!

Dear Dr. K: I’ve heard some people dump their unused medicines into the sink or toilet, which then gets into our drinking water. Is this true, and could it affect my health?

Dear Reader: Unfortunately, it’s true.

There is increasing concern about chemicals from unused medications making their way into our drinking water.

Drugs can get into the water in a variety of ways. As you say, some people flush unused or expired drugs down the toilet or pour them down the drain. More surprising, some nursing homes and hospitals do the same. Drug manufacturing facilities contribute to pharmaceutical pollution. Agricultural waste is another issue of growing importance. Poultry and livestock often are given antibiotic- and hormone-laced feed.

Sewage treatment plants and water treatment facilities remove live bacteria and many impurities from our drinking water, but they are not designed to remove pharmaceuticals. As a result, some pharmaceutical pollution does wind up in the water we drink. So far, only trace amounts of drugs have been found in drinking water, far below levels thought to affect humans.

It’s possible that ingesting even tiny amounts of these drugs could, over time, affect our health. But for now, there’s no evidence that drugs in the water are harming us.

The drugs we pour down the drain, however, could be affecting fish. For example, water sources polluted with estrogen and estrogen-like chemicals (from birth control pills and hormone treatments) contain more fish of ambiguous sex. They have both male and female characteristics – when they should have only one or the other. The impact of this on fish breeding is unclear.

Today’s deal begat two interesting game contracts, four spades in a nine-card fit and four hearts in an eight-card fit. First, let’s look at four spades. (Tune in tomorrow for the discussion about four hearts.) After West leads the club queen to South’s ace, what should declarer do?

Note North’s rebid: Two spades was best. He might have gambled with one no-trump, treating the singleton king as if it were king-doubleton (not a bad plan), but two spades was still preferable. (He couldn’t rebid two hearts, because that would have been a reverse and promised at least 17 points. Also, two diamonds would have been poor with such an unimpressive five-card suit.)

Declarer has five possible losers: two spades (if they break 4-0), one heart and two diamonds. If trumps are 2-2, there is no problem, but if they are 3-1, South must guess diamonds correctly.

So, declarer cashes the top trumps to learn that he has a loser there.

Then, before turning to diamonds, he should find out who holds the heart ace by playing on that suit. Here, West produces the ace and exits safely with a heart. Who has the diamond ace?

It must be East because West has already produced nine points: the spade queen, heart ace and club queen-jack. If he had the diamond ace as well, he would have opened the bidding.
