JOLIET – Four veterans who overcame substance abuse and mental health issues had their criminal charges dismissed Wednesday.

A hearing and ceremony was held for the graduates of the Will County Veterans Court – a program that allows those who have served in the military to avoid criminal convictions by agreeing to complete treatment and counseling.

“While veterans have protected our freedom, some may have suffered post-traumatic stress disorder, mental illness or turned to substance abuse as a result,” Judge Carla Alessio Policandriotes said. “It is our duty to give them the tools they need to deal with those problems.”

Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow said the support system of counselors will remain in place for these veterans and the groups to follow. Eligible defendants take about two years to complete the program, which was established in 2012.

“I came into this with mixed feelings.

I was reluctant to do it,” said Brian Patnoudes, a Navy veteran. “But I’m glad I made the decision to have gone into Veterans Court.”

Patnoudes said the camaraderie among veterans was his favorite part of the program.

“I thought two years was going to be so long when I started to do this, but it’s just the beginning,” said Patrick Brock, another Navy veteran. “[Skills] I’ve acquired are going to be with me for the rest of my life.”

Brock said his life had no direction

before he received drug and alcohol treatment and anger management classes. He is now pursuing a nursing degree and volunteers at Paralyzed Veterans of America.

John Ely, another Navy veteran, acknowledged making “bad choices” since he was 14 years old and began using drugs, but the court program has allowed him to “mend the broken relationships” in his life.

“Veterans Court was what [I] needed to wake up and be a better person,” said Ely, who volunteers at a local food pantry. “I’m unsure where I’d be if this change hadn’t

come about. I appreciate this.”

Kevin Kwicienski, an Army veteran, described his life as “chaotic ... and dark” before he joined the program.

“I think my mugshot is a testament to where I was at ... before I actually liked getting in trouble,” he said.

Kwicienski said he initially did not want to participate in Veterans Court, but defense attorney Kristine Honiotes pointed out he was being foolish.

“Go ahead, you can say you were right,” Kwicienski told her several times when he addressed the court.

On Sunday dogs are welcome at Silver Cross Field for the 1:05 p.m. game. The Slammers Bark in the Park day allows dogs in for free with a paying human. Tickets are $5 and all dogs must remain on a leash in the lawn area.

Sunday also is a Double Feature Sunday where fans can stay for a postgame movie on the field. Sunday’s feature is the cartoon, “101 Dalmatians.” Admission is free with a game ticket, or $1 to the public. Concessions will be available.

fsarver@shawmedia.com FRANKFORT – What might be the final chapter of Lincoln-Way North High School came to a close Wednesday as the last class of seniors graduated.

The closing of North – a roughly 8-year-old school constructed to meet projected student growth that never came – has been an issue that has left residents angry and sad. A group of parents have sued the Lincoln-Way board to prevent the closure.

One resident at the last week’s board meeting even requested Superintendent Scott Tingley and members of the board not attend the graduation ceremony.

Despite the string of controversies and outrage since the fateful decision by the board last August to close North, the graduation ceremony appeared to be calm, with the exception of at least one attendee who raised a sign that said “Resign,” which he eventually had to turn over to security.

Families gathered inside the football stadium next to the high school on a sunny Wednesday evening to watch as students were called to accept their diplomas.

Valedictorian Hannah Goss thanked parents who supported their loved ones throughout their high school career and thanked the teachers for their “contagious passion” that gave students direction.

“We are just beginning,” she said to her fellow students.

While the graduating class will move on to colleges, careers and other opportunities, the remaining student body of North will attend Lincoln-Way East starting in the fall as district officials prepare to go from four schools to

three in an effort to bring Lincoln-Way out of its financial crisis.

It was announced Wednesday that memories of North will linger on at East with a display case – featuring photographs and artifacts – to honor student accomplishments.

Kathleen Easton, whose son Donald was graduating, said it’s been a rough year for North students, but also a historic one. They’re the last class to have the privilege of graduating from a beautiful facility, she said.

She said her son has been “up and down” about North’s closing, as he has realized he won’t have a homecoming or a home in North, so to speak.

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Two companies pitched proposals to manage the Rialto Square Theatre to the theater’s board on Wednesday.

The presentations were made at a time when the Rialto is struggling to pay bills and has virtually stopped booking acts. But executives from both companies appeared eager for the Rialto’s business if the board decides to hire a third-party manager.

“We’d be ready to start virtually immediately,” Steven Peters, president of VenuWorks, told the Rialto board. His company provides management and consulting services to more than 50 venues, including historic theaters, in 12 states.

Ron Onesti, who heads Onesti Entertainment Corp. and manages the Arcada Theatre in St. Charles, told the board of his previous impressions while walking through the Rialto and thinking about the theater’s potential.

“I thought, man, if I could have

this, what I would do – never knowing there would be an opportunity,” Onesti told the board.

The board may hear two other proposals, including one from Harrah’s Entertainment, although it’s not clear whether the casino company is interested in managing the Rialto.

The Rialto board is considering the option of third-party management while it also interviews candidates for the vacant general manager’s job as it weighs the future direction of the theater.

Former General Manager Randy Green was forced out in April as the Rialto became dependent on the city to cover its payroll taxes and pay performers’ fees.

Board officials emphasized that they have not decided which direction to take.

“We’re looking at any and all options,” board Chairman Dan Vera said. “We’ve had people reach out to us who would just manage the real estate. That’s an option.”

The board plans to consider whether it should put up for sale two office buildings north of the theater, Two Rialto Square and the Terminal Building. Both buildings are owned by the Will County Metropolitan Exposition and Auditorium Authority, the official name of the board that oversees the Rialto Square Theater and adjacent office space.

Most of the meeting on Wednesday was devoted to presentations

by Onesti Entertainment and VenuWorks. The board expects to hear

presentations at future meetings from Harrah’s and SMG, a Pennsylvania-based company that manages theaters and other venues worldwide.

Onesti Entertainment is a St. Charles-based company that also manages shows at other venues.

VenuWorks is based in Ames, Iowa. The company recently took over management of US Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington.

Both Onesti and Peters said they did not have a detailed understanding of the Rialto’s finances. But both appeared eager to get the theater’s business, bringing other people affiliated with their companies as part of the presentations.

Peters brought with him three executive directors from other VenuWorks theaters and convention centers as well as the company’s vice president of food and beverage, while suggesting they would be able to take over quickly if the Rialto was interested.

“We can start very, very fast,” he said.

Easton said one of her favorite memories of North was the children who would sit on a hill next to the football stadium to watch the games. It was a like a rite of passage, she said.

“The hill is packed and every little kid on that hill wants to be a Phoenix in the football team,” she said.

Since the Lincoln-Way board decided to close North after receiving the worst state financial rating, the district has been hit with a series of controversies.

Residents have criticized district officials at board meetings and resisted the decision to shutter North. Many of them formed Lincoln-Way Area Taxpay-

ers Unite and sued the board just before last year ended to prevent the school’s closure. The anger escalated last week after news broke of federal subpoenas inquiring into district finances and activities – including those of former Superintendent Lawrence Wyllie. The district also announced the resignation of board member Kathleen Casey, the fourth resignation this year.

North Principal Mark Cohen, who

will move on to East as an associate principal, said the list of academic and athletic accomplishments for North students this year were long and impressive.

The graduating class even heard from Michael Gardner, a former North principal, who told them to never give up and “always give everything that you have.”

“It’s great to be gold forever,” he said.

Sentencing hearing held for Lockport’s ‘Naked Cowboy’

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The “Naked Cowboy” has moved west, which has caused a dilemma for the judge who has to sentence him in these parts.

Patrick McGinnis, 44, was found guilty of reckless discharge of a firearm, aggravated cruelty to animals and domestic battery following a bench trial before Judge Dave Carlson earlier this year. McGinnis’ sentencing hearing began Wednesday.

McGinnis and his wife had moved to the 100 block of North Jefferson Street in Lockport about two months before a Feb. 27, 2014, incident where they began arguing. According to trial testimony, McGinnis, naked except for a cowboy hat, fired a .44-caliber handgun, sending bullets into nearby houses, then shot his wife’s German shepherd.

McGinnis ingested between four and six bottles of cough syrup in the days before the shooting, according to trial testimony.

“He has [since] been diagnosed with partial seizures, something is not right, or correct, in his brain,” defense attorney Paul DeLuca said.

Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Chris Koch said prison time is appropriate for McGinnis’ actions.

“How lucky and fortunate that we’re not standing here today for three murder convictions. This isn’t out in the country where nobody’s around. This is in Lockport in the middle of the night with homes close by,” Koch said.

The bullets went over beds where people had been sleeping in two nearby houses and broke the window of a house across the street.

“I really came to in jail. I don’t know what I did. I don’t remember and I’m sorry,” McGinnis said. “I would never do this. I was raised [around] firearms. I would never use a firearm against anyone except in self-defense.”

Although McGinnis has prior misdemeanor convictions for battery in Idaho, disorderly conduct in California and driving under the influence in Alaska, Carlson indicated he is leaning toward sentencing McGinnis to probation.

However, since McGinnis has moved to Durango, Colorado, Carlson wants to ensure that state’s probation department will monitor that McGinnis is taking his prescribed medication. The judge is set to issue a sentence June 10.

Arnold said this is standard procedure for such a circumstance, and that his department, which protects fewer than 6,000 residents, has used the state police unit in other investigations.

LOCAL BRIEFS Vandals damage graves at Lockport cemetery

LOCKPORT – Vandals commemorated Memorial Day weekend by damaging several headstones at Lockport Cemetery.

The damage occurred between Friday night and Saturday morning at the cemetery at 528 Madison St., according to Mayor Steve Streit.

“Someone or some group of people pushed over numerous grave memorials and headstones, many of which were damaged and irreplaceable and some had been in place for over 100 years,” Streit said in a statement issued by the Lockport Police Department.

Widening project set to start this week on I-355 in Woodridge

DOWNERS GROVE – Work is scheduled to start this week on Interstate 355 in Woodridge on a roadway widening project.

Overnight lane closures in the southbound lanes between 63rd Street and 83rd Street are set to start, according to a news release from the tollway. A one-mile section is being widened on southbound I-355 between 71st and 75th streets to help provide congestion relief.

Ramps to and from the south are being realigned to match the new mainline configuration.

Starting Thursday, one left lane is scheduled to close at 9 p.m. for shoulder work to prepare for a traffic shift. The lane will reopen each morning by 5 a.m. in advance of the morning rush hour. This work is expected to last until mid-June, according to the news release.

Once the preparation work is complete, three lanes of traffic are scheduled to be shifted to the left with a work zone on the right to begin roadway widening work.

Ramps at 71st Street and 75th Street will remain open at all times.

WILMINGTON – A 12-year-old boy from Joliet was found at 10:54 a.m.

Wednesday in the Kankakee River, about 3.5 miles downstream from where he drowned Monday evening.

Eder Arroyo had fallen into the river near a dam at South Island Park in Wilmington, when his sister – 13-yearold Abigail Arroyo – jumped in, attempting to save him. The turbulent undertow took both children underwater and left one of two fishermen who tried to rescue the siblings in critical condition.

Abigail, who had just completed seventh grade at Gompers Junior High School in Joliet, was found that evening and pronounced dead at 7:14 p.m. Monday in the emergency room at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office. Her father, Jerry Arroyo, said Tuesday she dreamed of going into nursing and “had a plan, even at her young age.”

Wilmington Deputy Fire Chief Todd Friddle said during a news conference about 3:45 p.m. Wednesday that the Wilmington Fire Protection District’s request for a U.S. Coast Guard flyover search had just been approved when first responders on a rescue boat located

and identified Eder.

He was found in a shallow, middle portion of the river, west of the Interstate 55 overpass. Eder was pronounced dead at 12:25 p.m. Wednesday by the Will County Coroner’s Office at the Kankakee River Dock near the 25000 block of Phillips Road in Wilmington Township.

“After 90 minutes [of search and rescue], it becomes a recovery mission,” Friddle said. “Then, our goal ultimately is to provide closure for the family, to locate the victim for them and to keep our rescuers safe, which we did. We were able to close out this operation today and provide closure for the family.”

Eder was on the surface of the water when he was found, Friddle said. Friddle estimated seven to 10 miles of river are within the fire district, and first responders intended to search all the way to the convergence of the Kankakee and Des Plaines rivers near the line separating Will and Grundy counties, a short distance from where Eder was found.

Wilmington Mayor Marty Orr sent condolences to the Arroyo family and acknowledged discussions between the city and Illinois Department of Natural Resources have occurred in the past regarding safety issues at the dam. Locals and Friddle have said numerous people have drowned at the dam.

LOCAL BRIEF Plainfield man dies after crash near LaSalle-Kendall county line

A Plainfield man died over the weekend in a motorcycle crash near the line dividing Kendall and LaSalle counties.

Michael R. Miklas, 52, was driving a motorcycle Sunday night on North 41st Road less than a mile west of Route 71, according to a joint news release from the LaSalle County coroner’s and sheriff’s

offices, when his vehicle left the roadway at a curve, entered a ditch and overturned.

Sheriff’s deputies from LaSalle and Kendall counties responded to the incident at 11:53 p.m. and Miklas was taken to an area hospital and pronounced dead, the news release stated.

The crash remains under investigation by LaSalle County authorities.

JOLIET – Concerts on the Hill return Thursday to Bicentennial Park, and the outdoor summer concert series will have a few new twists this year.

One will be an Elvis Presley tribute performer, who appears June 9 in the first of three special acts that will change the music mix a bit.

“We want to keep it a community concert featuring local talent,” interim manager Deanna Opsahl said. “That’s what we’re trying to showcase. But we do want to broaden it once a month.”

Other new features this summer will be an Artists’ Enclave, where local artists can exhibit their work during the concerts, and, if the Joliet City Council approves a pending liquor license, beer and wine sales.

The concert series begins Thursday with two traditional performers: the Metropolitan Youth Symphony and the Joliet American Legion Band.

Concerts on the Hill, entering its 42nd year, always has been a free event featuring music from community orchestras, school bands and other local talent. The event remains free, and all concerts start at 6:30 p.m.

Nick Miller, who will do the Elvis tribute, is a Joliet resident. Also per-

forming June 9 will be the Joliet Central High School Big Band and a musical preview from “American Idiot,” the community theater musical to be performed at Bicentennial Park later in June.

Other special acts this summer will be Spoken Four, a pop dance band that plays contemporary music, on July 7 and New Invaders, a band that plays music from the ’60s, on Aug. 11.

This is a renaissance summer for Bicentennial Park, which is bringing back an Independence Day fireworks show on July 2 and will hold River Fest, a new version of the old Waterway Daze, on July 23.

The board that oversees the park has hired Debbie Greene to be development director. Greene said she will raise money and seek sponsorships for more events at the park.

Meanwhile, Bicentennial Park also is inviting local artists to exhibit in an area just north of the stage during Concerts on the Hill. Opsahl said artists can exhibit at no charge. They can sell art, too, but there is a fee for space for those who want to sell.

Beer and wine would be an addition to the traditional concession stand, which always has featured hot dogs, popcorn, soft drinks and other snacks.

“We’re looking to offer a cold beer with a hot dog,” Opsahl said.

MAYWOOD – A former Illinois state trooper convicted of killing his girlfriend has been sentenced to 50 years in prison.

Prosecutors said 35-year-old Brian Himber of Chicago was sentenced Wednesday for the shooting death of 29-year-old Tracy Mays of Joliet in July 2012. He was convicted of first-degree murder in Janu-

ary. He must serve all of his sentence.

Prosecutors said a few hours after arriving at a graduation party in Westchester, the off-duty trooper fired a .380 caliber handgun and struck Mays several times as she sat on a porch. She later died at a hospital. Himber also shot himself once in the chin but has since recovered from that injury.

OBITUARIES MICHAEL WARD ADLER Michael Ward Adler, age 55, passed away Tuesday, May 31, 2016, from complications of metastatic melanoma.

Throughout his treatments, he continued to approach life with the same loving and enduring spirit he always had.

From the first day he saw his wife, Joanne, 36 years ago at Northern Illinois University, rumor has it he said, “there’s something about that girl ...” They went on their first date to an REO Speedwagon concert and she was hooked on the guy who was the life of the party. They married in 1984. His proudest accomplishment was watching his four children, triplets Kelly, Erin and Michael, and their son, Collin, become the loving and successful adults that they are today. Mike was the dad that was out on the soccer field or basketball court coaching the kid’s teams. He was blessed to have many friends and they knew how important they were to him.

Mike was vice president of J. L. Adler Roofing Company of Joliet-a fourth generation roofing company that was founded by his grandfather Joseph L. Adler in 1926. He was a trusted and honest businessman that made many friends in the industry. He served as secretary/treasurer of the Contractor’s Association of Will & Grundy County and was named Man of the Year in 2012. The good work done at the Boys & Girls Club of Joliet was close to his heart and he was active as President of the Board of Directors. Randall S. Bowen, age 67, of Berlin, WI, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, May 25, 2016. Randy was born Dec. 28, 1948, in Sycamore, to Scott and Elsie (Anderson) Bowen.

Randy attended the Joliet Illinois High School. After graduation, he served his country proudly in the U.S. Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1971. Randy had a deep respect

for the military and veterans. He moved to Berlin, WI, in 1977, where he was employed for 20 years with Oshkosh Corporation. He loved hunting, fishing, gun-collecting and spending as much time as he could with his family at his cabin he built in Tripoli. He had a passion for knife-making and making rustic furniture.

Randy loved animals, especially his dogs.

Survivors include his mother, Elsie Bowen of Joliet; his significant other, Roberta Miller of Oshkosh, WI; one son, Eric (Marnie) Bowen of Greenville, WI; one daughter, Lori (Bryan) Hahn of Fremont, WI; two stepdaughters, Kersten and Marissa Miller; and three brothers, Curt Bowen of Pennsylvania, Tom (Sue) Bowen of Plainfield and Chris Bowen of Joliet. He loved to bowl and was on numerous leagues throughout the years. He also loved gardening and spent many hours simply sitting outside with his wife, Shirley.

Barb worked as a teacher in Braidwood at Reed-Custer Middle School retiring after 36 years of dedicated service. Barb was a lifetime member of the James H. Hamill Unit 549 American Legion Auxiliary of Earlville. She loved to travel and was able to visit all 50 states. Barb enjoyed visiting her younger sister in Wisconsin, often referring to it as her “vacation home.” She was an avid Cubs fan and enjoyed visiting with all her friends and family.

She is survived by two sisters, Virginia (Kenneth) Krienert of Earlville and Joyce Smith and “Missy the cat” of Baraboo, WI; one niece, Kristen Krienert of Bloomington; two aunts, Lois “Toots” Ridge and JoAnne Eichorn, both of Mendota; and several cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Budget fight shifts to Nov. elections The ASSOCIATED PRESS SPRINGFIELD – After finishing another legislative session without agreeing on a budget, Gov. Bruce Rauner and Illinois’ ruling Democrats began looking for other options Wednesday even as they focus on November and try to convince voters the other side is to blame for the state’s enormous fiscal mess.

Just hours after lawmakers adjourned their spring session, Rauner and fellow Republicans began touring the state, bashing Democrats.

But there’s huge political risk for both sides leading up to the general election. As Senate President John Cullerton put it late Tuesday: “[Rauner] is in trouble, just like we’re in trouble.”

“We have universities that might close, social service providers that might close and schools that might not open,” the Chicago Democrat said.

“And we’re all confronted with this right now.”

Rauner on Wednesday started a two-day, campaign-style tour of Illinois, where he repeated his assessment from late Tuesday that the session was a “stunning failure.” He went on to blame Democrats for the state’s fiscal troubles – and not just this year’s failure to pass a budget.

He took a shot at Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan, his main political rival in the state’s 11-month budget standoff, pointing to his de-

cades-long rule as the reason for the state’s $5 billion deficit and $111 billion pension debt.

“The tragic fact is Speaker Madigan and his Democrats have controlled the General Assembly for more than 30 years. Thirty years of total power. And in those 30 years, we have the highest deficits, debt, unfunded pension liabilities in America,” Rauner said during a stop at Vienna Correctional Center in Southern Illinois.

Democrats argue Rauner’s yearlong insistence on passing pro-business legislation and curbing the power of unions – one of their strongest constituencies – is the reason for the historic impasse.

Madigan has repeatedly said Rauner is holding hostage schools, social service programs and higher education institutions because of his “personal agenda.”

The state’s largest state employees union, which is locked in a bitter contract dispute with Rauner, criticized his visit to the prison, with a spokesman for the group saying in a statement he was “exploiting state worksites for his own political purposes.”

“Gov. Rauner should focus on his own job – signing a budget without precondition – and leave state employees to do theirs,” said Anders Lindall, spokesman for the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, Council 31.

The governor called on Forby and other area Democratic lawmakers to stand up to their party’s leaders and help him pass a short-term budget fix and a school funding bill while he and lawmakers negotiate a full spending plan.

Several Republicans looking to unseat Democratic incumbents also held news conferences Wednesday to criticize lawmakers for the lack of progress on a budget. Three of those incumbents are in suburban Chicago districts where the GOP sees its best odds of picking up seats – and they’ll have the financial backing of Rauner, a wealthy former venture capitalist.

Democrats, meanwhile, are looking to boost their numbers in each chamber to have solid supermajorities that will allow them to impose their will on the first-term governor.

Each party is gambling that voters’ anger will damage the other side with public schools in danger of not receiving money this fall and the continued decimation of social service programs.

Illinois has the dubious distinction of being the only state in the country without a budget for the current fiscal year, which began July 1.

But there are signs that neither side is willing to stomach possible school closures heading into the general election.

Cullerton and Madigan said they want to work with the governor to pass a temporary budget that allows the state to fund schools, social services and colleges through the end of the year.

Madigan said House lawmakers will return to Springfield every Wednesday in June beginning next week, and Cullerton said he’ll call his members back for votes once there is progress in negotiations.

Passing any legislation now is a heavy lift. Before this year’s session concluded, lawmakers needed a simple majority to pass a budget. Now, they’ll need three-fifths support from each chamber.

Rauner was already preparing to blame Democrats if they can’t reach a deal.

“If they refuse and want to wait until after the general election, we need to hold them accountable for their decisions and what they’ve done to us over time,” he said Wednesday.

Officers swarm UCLA in response to shooting The ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES – Hundreds of heavily armed officers swarmed the sprawling UCLA campus Wednesday following a shooting that forced thousands to barricade themselves in classrooms and offices, some using belts and chairs to secure doors, until authorities determined the gunman and the professor he shot were dead.

About two hours after the first 911 call came in around 10 a.m., with the center of campus still saturated with officers, Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck said it was a murder-suicide and declared the threat over.

Two men were dead, and authorities found a gun and what might be a suicide note, he said.

William S. Klug, a professor of mechanical engineering, was gunned down in an engineering building office, according to a law enforcement official. The official has knowledge of the investigation but wasn’t authorized to publicly discuss it. The shooter has not yet been identified.

Signs of hope in a distressing age

“I can’t believe we blew this.”

Marco Rubio had just spoken to a group of pastors and other faith leaders. In his speech, he seemed to perfectly diagnose the problems of our times – including the lack of prioritization of the family, hostility toward religion and an appreciation of the dignity of work. But the pining in the room for an alternative to Donald Trump may have missed one thing: This fracture in our politics won’t be saved by any one man or woman.

Yuval Levin begins his new book, “The Fractured Republic: Renewing America’s Social Contract in the Age of Individualism,” with a quote from a Frenchman, Alexis de Tocqueville, in his “Democracy in America.” De Tocqueville saw the best of America, but also saw problems. “Placed in the middle of a rapid river, we obstinately fix our eyes on some debris we still perceive on the bank, while the current carries us away and takes us backward toward the abyss.”

If you’re seeing the abyss on the horizon, Yuval starts with a bit of a pep talk. He writes: “Life in America is always getting better and worse

Decay and decadence almost always trail behind success, while renewal chases ruin. And in a vast society like ours, all of this is always happening at once. So the politics of “elect me and everything will be different” is so simplistic and unrealistic as to be comic. Levin writes: “Each [political party] wants desperately to recover its lost ideal, believes the bulk of the country does, too, and is endlessly frustrated by the political resistance that holds it back. The broader public, meanwhile, finds in the resulting

political debates little evidence of real engagement with contemporary problems and few attractive solutions. In the absence of relief from their own resulting frustration, a growing number of voters opt for leaders who simply embody or articulate that frustration.”

Levin points to the “promise” of our time consisting of “diversity and choice,” while the related danger is of “polarization and division.”

“Most of our political leaders, on the left and the right alike ... find themselves hard pressed to understand the polarization of our politics, even as they must play by the rules it has created. And they find it very difficult to grasp the diffusion transforming other facets of our society,” Levin writes.

Rubio, while keeping people guessing about his political future, points out that his most important role in life is as husband and father.

No government bureaucracy will ever provide love like a neighbor or parent. Our country’s renewal lies not in a president who gets things right, but in people who serve and

lead in the most fundamental of ways, in their homes and in their communities.

As de Tocqueville put it: “To instruct democracy, if possible to reanimate its beliefs, to purify its mores, to moderate its movements, to substitute little by little an understanding of affairs for its inexperience, and knowledge of its true interests for its blind instincts; to adapt its government to time and place; to modify it according to circumstances and men – such is the first duty imposed on those who would guide society in our day.”

There are common values many of us share. If we start looking around and asking people what they want and need, we may just find that America has great leaders and stewards, and that it is in supporting them that we will find our renewal.

Shaw Media Correspondent LOCKPORT – Rarely does a softball player admit to be going to the plate and only thinking of hitting a home run, but that’s what Lincoln-Way East senior Nicole O’Donnell was thinking.

And the senior did just that in the Griffins’ 4-2 come-from-behind victory over Providence Catholic in Wednesday’s Class 3A Lockport Sectional semifinal game.

East (24-7) now will take on the

winner of today’s 4:30 p.m. matchup between Homewood-Flossmoor and Plainfield Central in Saturday’s 11 a.m. championship.

“I was thinking going to the plate that I need a home run,” said O’Donnell of her third round-tripper of the season. “It was the sixth inning.

We needed runs; it was getting late.

I didn’t know it was gone. I was just running, then I heard everyone.”

With the Griffins trailing 2-0 going to the top of the sixth, Marina Esparza reached base with one out on a walk

by Celtics pitcher Kendal Judge. Then with two outs, after a fielders choice, Lauren Herlihy coaxed another walk from Judge, which set up the dramatics for O’Donnell.

The three-run blast over the left center-field fence never was in doubt when it left the bat.

“I was looking fastball on the 1-0 count and that is what I got,” O’Donnell said. “My coaches have been really working with me on my hitting. I give them all the credit.”

“Right now, it is just one game at

Lincoln-Way West claims initial sectional win

cherron@shawmedia.com KANKAKEE – Wednesday was a historic day for Lincoln-Way West’s softball team as it captured its first sectional win to assure its furthest advancement in postseason play.

But, based on how the Warriors performed in their 6-2 victory over Marian Catholic in the Class 3A Bishop McNamara Sectional semifinals, it’s clear coach Heather Novak’s squad has its sights set on more rewriting of the record book.

West (26-8) advances to Saturday’s 11 a.m. championship game against the host Fightin’ Irish with a trip to Monday’s Illinois Wesleyan University Super-Sectional on the line.

Amanda Ruskowsky tossed a five-hitter and struck out 13, while Tiffany Buis (2 for 4) and Sarah Goff both drove in two runs for the Warriors, who scored three times in the fourth inning and twice in the fifth to overcome an early 1-0 deficit.

“Our girls have been working hard the whole season and they work together as a team,” Novak said. “Their work ethic has been great going back to the first day of the season. But not only that, they enjoy being around each other and playing as a team.

Their ability to work together, play together and have that team-first mentality has been huge for us.

“Marian’s a great team and their pitcher (Danielle Thieman) is very good. We had a game plan against her and the girls followed the approach at the plate by putting the ball in play.

And we were happy to see them respond after Marian went ahead 1-0.”

After the Warriors managed twoout singles in the second and third, the Spartans (23-12) collected their first hit in the third and it also came with two outs. Bri Teeter smacked a triple to right and then came home on a wild pitch to give Marian the early advantage.

But West quickly responded by making the most of four hits, a walk

and an error in the fourth to score three times. Mac Mahy got things started with a walk before Dani Callahan (two runs) got a single and Jenna Czart reached on an error to load the bases with no outs.

After Goff hit into a fielder’s choice, Buis singled to right to drive in two runs, and then April Lewandowski followed with a hit to left to make it 3-1.

“We’ve worked really hard this whole season,” Mahy said. “Our coach has been telling us that we have what it takes to get there, we just have to push, and we’ve done that. We’ve done so well lately because we’re so close as friends and work so much better together than some other teams. I’ve really enjoyed this year, and, hopefully, we’ll keep getting better.”

In the fifth, Ruskowsky led off with an infield single and took third after a wild pitch and sacrifice by Mahy. Callahan drew a walk and Czart got on base after a dropped pop up to load the bases. Then Buis slapped a single to right to give West a 5-1 lead.

West got its final run in the sixth when Madison Eckberg was hit by a pitch, Ruskowsky singled, Mahy sacrificed the runners and Callahan drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

Marian got a run back in the sixth when Susie Baranski and Maddy Kapers led off with hits and Gabi Angellotti drove in the final run with a single to left. After striking out three batters in both the fifth and sixth innings, Ruskowsky fanned the first two batters she faced in the seventh before coaxing a pop up for the final out.

“It’s good having my teammates putting runs on the board for me when I’m on the mound and when my stuff isn’t working as good as it was today, they’re behind me in the field,” Ruskowsky said. “We worked really hard in the offseason on our hitting and we put the ball in play. And if you put the ball in play against good teams, good things will happen. This is a close-knit group and our camaraderie is great.

We all have the same goal, to get downstate.”

After a double by the Celtics’ Jessica Miklos that followed Cothern’s homer, freshman Amanda Wehy relieved Esparza for the Griffins and shut down the Celtics the rest of the way.

Wehy pitched 42/3 innings, giving up only two hits while striking out four.

“Marina did a great job for us,” Wehy said. “Providence is a really good hitting team. I’ll admit, I was very nervous going into the game. We have a very good defense and they make the plays. I’m nervous and this season has been hard being a freshman, but we have such a great team. It’s also fun.”

Judge went the distance for the Celtics, giving up only four hits. Five base on balls, a hit by pitch and a couple of errors were the ultimate undoing of the Celtics, however.

“We were in total control of that game,” said a disappointed Celtics coach Jay Biesterfeld. “We had some missed opportunities early that would have really put them in the hole. We battled every inning and I thought played well. The walks, a few bad calls and that is the game.”

The Celtics had seven hits on the day, all by different players, and had runners on base every inning except the fifth.

“Nicole has worked very hard on her hitting this year,” Griffins coach Elizabeth Pawlicki said. “She is really becoming a smart hitter. We just needed her to put the ball in play in that situation, and, I guess, she did.

“Amanda is so very poised for a freshman. She has done a great job this season. That was a pressure situation and she just went out and did her job. All of our young kids are still learning the game.”

“Ryan was outstanding for us tonight,” Connolly said. “I work hard at my hitting, and my hard work has really been paying off as of late.”

For Morgan Park (23-5), TJ Byrd doubled to lead off the fourth inning.

Bullock laid down a beautiful bunt single to set the Mustangs up with runners on first and third and no out.

But Bullock made the mistake of running on the arm of Casey O’Brien, who threw a perfect strike to Indian shortstop Connolly, who put the tag on Bullock in his attempt to steal second.

Fired up by the huge assist from his battery mate, Sublette blew away the next two Mustang hitters on strikes to end the inning and preserve his shutout.

“Ryan has been pitching this way for us all season,” Lemont coach Brian Storako said. “Casey O’Brien came through for us with his shooting down the Morgan Park base runner trying to steal second in the crucial fourth inning. When our No. 9 hitter (Salinas) and our leadoff man (Connolly) are driving in our runs, we are a very hard team to beat.”

O’Fallon nipped Belleville West, 6-5, in nine innings in the 4A sectional semifinals.

It will play the winner of today’s semifinal between Plainfield South and Minooka in Saturday’s 11 a.m. title game in Bloomington.

NEW LENOX – Junior righthander Ryan Sublette fired a five-hit shutout to help Lemont capture a 2-0 victory over Morgan Park in the first semifinal game of Wednesday’s Class 3A Lincoln-Way West Sectional.

Sublette (9-1) struck out seven and did not walk a batter against Morgan Park, which was led by University of Michigan-bound Christian Bullock.

The future Wolverine was the only problem for Sublette, going 3-for-3.

Bullock also was the losing pitcher for the Mustangs, giving up two runs and seven hits in his 42/3 innings of work on the mound.

“I just threw strikes today and

my defense made all of the plays behind me,” Sublette said. “My fastball was my best pitch today, and Casey (McGuire’s) throwing out the Morgan Park baserunner’s attempt to steal second base in the fourth inning really helped me.”

Next up for the Indians (26-9) is a date with Herscher in Saturday’s 11 a.m. championship game. That game was tied 1-1 in the sixth inning.

The Indians got on the board in the top of the second when Sublette led off the inning with a single. Joe Kelley’s sacrifice bunt moved courtesy runner Marcus Ambroziak into scoring position. Christian Krakar walked and No. 9 hitter Angel Salinas singled home Ambroziak with the first Indian run.

Lester leads Cubs past Dodgers

The Associated Press CHICAGO – Jon Lester pitched a four-hitter for his first complete game of the season, helping the Cubs edge the Los Angeles Dodgers 2-1 on Wednesday despite another lackluster night at the plate.

The Cubs finished with just three hits against Mike Bolsinger and two relievers after they managed only one in Tuesday night’s 5-0 loss to Los Angeles. But one of the Cubs hits was a long, two-run homer to center field by Kris Bryant in the third inning, and Lester (6-3) took over from there.

The left-hander struck out 10 and walked none in his second straight win, settling down quite nicely after Kike Hernandez’s leadoff homer on his second pitch. He retired his last 15 batters and threw 113 pitches in his 13th career complete game and first since a 2-1 win at Pittsburgh on Sept. 15.

With two relievers standing on the mound in the bullpen, Lester retired Justin Turner and Corey Seager on grounders to shortstop before Howie Kendrick struck out swinging for the

“I mean it’s awesome to see,” Rizzo said before the Cubs game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. “It’s an honor with what we’ve been doing on the field as a group, all of us. For the fans to recognize that is awesome. It’s an exciting time for the Cubs.”

“I think our guys are likable.

They’re approachable,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. “They’re blue collar, man. There’s not a white-collar guy among them. They come out there, they get their fingernails dirty and I think people appreciate that. I think they’re very Chicago.”

They’re also very successful so far.

The Cubs had a major league-best 3515 record heading into Wednesday night’s game against the Dodgers.

They also led the majors in run differential and ERA by starting rotation.

Rizzo made the All-Star team in each of the past two years, but the slugger has never been elected to the starting lineup by the fans. He was acquired by the Cubs in a January 2012 trade with San Diego.

“It’s nice to be rewarded. I know it’s early, but still,” Rizzo said.

Rizzo had 874,471 votes, compared to 271,670 for San Francisco’s Brandon Belt in second place at first. Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina and New York Mets outfielder Yoenis Cespedes also were in position for a starting spot.

OAKLAND, Calif. – LeBron vs. Steph. King James vs. the Baby-faced Assassin. Nike vs.

UnderArmour.

Any way you slice it, it’s a dream matchup for the league in the NBA Finals. Again.

A second straight championship showdown between LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers and Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors puts the league’s two brightest stars on its biggest stage.

It also could mark the beginnings of a new rivalry between the long-time face of the league and the shooting supernova threatening to supplant him.

“It’s really annoying for me. That’s not what I’m playing for, to be the face of the NBA or to be this or that or to take LeBron’s throne or whatever,” Curry said Wednesday, one day before the Warriors host the Cavs in Game 1. “You know, I’m trying to chase rings, and that’s what I’m all about. So that’s where the conversation stops for me.”

Curry got his first last year, at James’ expense. And there have been subtle signs of a brewing rivalry ever since.

As the Curry hype was building during the Warriors’ run to the title last season, James went out of his way to proclaim himself “the best player on the planet” during the finals.

He played like it, too, averaging 35.8 points, 13.3 rebounds and 8.8 assists while carrying a Cavs team missing Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love through six games in the series.

After Curry won his second MVP award this season in unanimous fashion – something no other player, including four-time winner James, ever had done – James offered a nuanced take on the achievement.

James said Curry’s numbers were tremendous, “but when you talk about most ‘valuable’ then you can have a different conver-

sation, so, take nothing away from him, he’s definitely deserving of that award, for sure.”

On Wednesday, James expanded, saying “Steph was definitely the MVP of our league.”

“You guys make rivals,” James said. “I think it’s great for the sport. It’s great for all sports. I don’t think me and Steph, when you talk about rivalries, you talk about Carolina-Duke, you talk about Ohio State-Michigan. It’s hard to say LeBron and Steph. If there’s a smaller scale or another word for a rival.”

If not rivals, certainly peers at the top of the league’s food chain. They both have changed the league in different ways.

“I don’t think there’s just a face in the NBA,” Warriors guard Klay Thompson said.

“I think there are faces because it’s such a star-driven league. ... But I think it might be easier for the common fan to relate to Steph because it’s hard to be 6-8, 260 and have a 40inch (vertical) and be the fastest guy on the floor.”

There are similarities between the locomotive and the lightning bolt.

They have reached the stratosphere within the league and global sporting conscience, have made their teammates better by virtue of their unparalleled skills and can take over a game in the blink of an eye. They also both were born in Akron, in the same hospital no less.

But there is not a lot of real estate to be sold on the common ground between James and Curry.

James has been a star since puberty, growing up with a single mother and under the glare created by the Sports Illustrated spotlight. No cover jinx there. He was the consensus No. 1 draft choice in 2004 and has fulfilled all of that promise and then some while asserting himself as the league’s conscience with his willingness to speak boldly on social issues.

The Associated Press NEW YORK – Pitcher Matt Albers doubled leading off the 13th inning for his first hit since 2007 and scored the tiebreaking run as the White Sox rallied past the New York Mets, 2-1, on Wednesday, helped by Todd Frazier’s major league-leading 17th homer.

Albers (2-4) relieved Sox closer David Robertson to start the 12th and led off the 13th in his first at-bat since 2009.

With the outfield playing shallow, he lined a 1-2 pitch from Logan Verrett (3-3) to left-center, and the ball rolled to the fence on two hops. Unaccustomed to baserunning, Albers didn’t slide at second and steadied himself against second baseman Neil Walker to avoid coming off the base.

A 33-year-old right-hander who has spent most of his career in the American League, Albers had been 2 for 34 (.059) at the plate in his major league career and had not even batted since 2009. He chugged to third on a wild pitch that went to the backstop and scored standing up for his first major league run on Jose Abreu’s sacrifice fly.

PLAINFIELD – Tasha Smith of Naperville was looking for the right dance studio for her daughter Simone.

Smith wanted a place where Simone wouldn’t have to start with the younger students. Leap of Faith Arts Ministries had that program. But it also featured a strong faith foundation, a double blessing since Smith’s children attend a classical Christian school.

Eighteen months later, Smith knows she made the right decision for Simone, now 13, and a student of jazz, tap and ballet. Instead of an emphasis on “me,” looks and glamour, Smith found a refreshing focus on “you” and the celebration of talents God has bestowed on one’s peers.

“It’s sometimes difficult, especially in the teenage years, to see girls actually come alongside each other and really uplift each other,” Smith said. “They [the teachers at Leap of Faith] do a really good job focusing on that.”

Leap of Faith Arts Ministries is “a Christian organization dedicated to spreading the good news about Christ through performance-based art,” according to its website.

Executive Director Becca Heye said the Plainfield-based Leap of Faith Arts Ministries was part of Community Christian Church’s School for the Arts until 2011. That’s when the school closed and the dance program became its own ministry.

At one time, Heye had been the assistant director for the School for the Arts, and later a parent volunteer when she was busy raising her own four children.

When the opportunity opened to begin Leap of Faith, Heye felt God calling her to do it, for his glory.

A Christian arts ministry makes sense, as Heye said the Bible offers many examples of people using their creativity to worship and honor God. “Each of us has different gifts,” Heye said. “As we delve into those gifts and talents, we use them to serve others.”

The dance team

Heye said Leap of Faith began with about 30 dance students and renting space in various local businesses until the ministry started renting its own space in 2012. In 2014, Leap of Faith moved to its current location at 14210 S. Route 30, Unit 124, in Plainfield.

Today Leap of Faith has more than 100 students – girls and boys, ages 2 through adult – taking a variety of classes: ballet, jazz, tap, contemporary and hip-hop, Heye said.

Of those students, 25 of the girls form the Shining Lights Dance Team, which performs once a month at different venues, such as Brookfield Zoo and Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, Heye said.

But the dance part of the ministry is more than classes. It’s spiritual formation and a witnessing tool.

“We include prayer time and Bible study time and service projects,” Heye said. “We want to be sure we’re giving back to the community. We want the kids to learn, starting from the time they are very young, that serving others is a way of worship. It should be part of their culture as Christ followers.”

The dance students perform two recitals a year. The upcoming June 4 spring recital is the largest one, complete with costumes, lighting and sound.

The winter recital is more subdued, Heye added, but fun since it comes without the pressure and stress of a major performance.

The theater team

The two-year-old theater team has 10 members, ages 10 to 18. It rehearses weekly, learns two plays a year and performs four times a year at underserved areas in the community where art is not easily accessed, Heye added.

“Because we go into schools, our plays have Christian values in them, but we don’t talk directly about Christian Bible stories,” Heye said.

Lisa Matich of Plainfield feels the theater group allows her son Ian, 11, to express his creative and spiritual sides.

He started with the group two years ago and never minded he was the only boy at the time, Matich added.

Matich said Ian’s participation with Leap of Faith has benefited him outside the group, too. With each 30-second book commercial Ian is required to present as a student at Heritage Grove Middle School, Ian grows more creative and less dependent on note cards, she said.

Ian also is one of three boys in Leap of Faith’s hip-hop classes.

“It made him more confident going to school dances,” Matich said, “because he can do moves the other boys can’t.”

MONEE – After supporting her mom in a painful cancer-journey that took her life over 20 years ago, Tracy DeGraaf never imagined she’d be laughing about her own cancer today.

Yet, the 50-year-old author, comedienne, wife, mother of five sons, Christian, and now breast cancer survivor is doing exactly that and will be performing her one-woman show Life Happens, Laugh Anyway on June 11 at Second Place Church, 6370 W. Athletics brings Lemont Catholic community together

LEMONT – Cheers and prayers were heard throughout the gym as sixth grade basketball teams from three local Catholic grade schools competed in a friendly tournament on March 3.

Participants included St. Alphonsus/ St. Patrick’s, SS. Cyril & Methodius and the host school, Everest Academy. SS. Cyril & Methodius’ team walked away as the tournament winner but everyone benefited from this exciting night of fun, faith and sportsmanship.

The hope is to continue these basketball tournaments as an annual tradition, with the possible addition of other sports tournaments.

The partnership continues through the Lemont Catholic Football Program.

Joliet Franciscan centenarian lives each day as a new beginning

JOLIET – Sister Mary Franz celebrated her 100th birthday on May 23.

Both civic and religious dignitaries from around the State of Illinois came to Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home in Joliet to share in the celebration.

Bishop R. Daniel Conlon, Diocese of Joliet, Mayor Bob O’Dekirk and State Sen. Pat McGuire joined residents, staff and the Joliet Franciscan Sisters at two different parties for Sister Mary on her special day.

Born in Ohio, Franz (formerly known as Sister Ursuline) is now a resident at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home in Joliet where she offers a “ministry of presence” to other residents by visiting, talking and praying with them.

Franz was a teacher for many years in elementary schools, high schools and at the College of St. Francis (now the University of St. Francis). She also served as director of postulants for the congregation from 1960 to 1967.

In 2011, at age 95, Franz was asked to participate in a panel discussion regarding vocations. Although she was unable to do so at that time, she sent a letter which covered different chapters of her religious life.

Students began the day with a parade around the track led by the Boy Scout Troop who then also conducted the flag ceremony. The concert band then played the National Anthem.

Each grade rotated as a group around the stadium to visit all the events, which included long jump, an obstacle course, 50 meter and 100 meter runs, as well as games of kickball. At the school, the kindergarten and preschool classes held their own versions of Olympic Day with activities. Olympic Day is an SMI tradition that serves as a memorable way to wind down the school year. Many thanks go to school parent volunteer coordinators Al and Stephanie Pintoy, with the help of physical education teacher Eric Carlson.

One retires, director appointed at Midwest Christian Montessori

BOLINGBROOK – The board of directors of Midwest Christian Montessori Academy announces the retirement of Marilyn Webster as director of the school. The board has requested that Marilyn continue to serve as a board member emeritus. She graciously has accepted and is looking forward to this opportunity.

Webster has served MCMA, and previously New Beginnings, as a teacher of a preschool/kindergarten class for over 25 years.

Her devotion to the children, the Montessori Method and God has shown through each and every day. She became director in 2013.

The board of directors is also pleased to announce the appointment of Eileen Contos as Director of Midwest Christian Montessori Academy. Contos assumed the duties on May 27. Contos has been associated with MCMA, formerly New Beginnings, for over 20 years. She currently shares the position of office manager and serves as business manager on the board. Confirmandi, Gabriella Fernandez crowned the statue of Mary. The litany was led by the members of the Confirmation class and other classes led various Mary prayers as part of the prayer service.

Swimming is good form of exercise Dear Dr. K: I’m overweight, and I want to exercise. But I have painful knees that make it difficult to walk. Is swimming a good alternative?

Dear Reader: In terms of convenience, it’s hard to beat brisk walking as a form of exercise. You don’t need any special equipment or venue, and you can do it in many places. But during the winter, harsh weather can make walking outdoors unpleasant – even treacherous at times. And for some people – such as those with achy knees, sore hips or substantial weight – walking may be uncomfortable.

The good news is swimming allows you to meet your fitness goals with less stress on your joints and muscles than brisk walking.

Large studies looking at the benefits of physical activity have tended to lump swimming together with other types of exercise. That’s because relatively few people swim on a regular basis. But plenty of evidence points to lower rates of heart disease among people who do regular, moderate- to vigorous-intensity exercise. And swimming laps definitely qualifies.

Recreational swimming will burn about the same calories as brisk walking. One key advantage to swimming is water makes you buoyant, which takes the stress off your joints. This can be especially helpful for people who are carrying excess weight.

Water also offers resistance as you move through it, which allows you to work out vigorously (if you’re able) with little chance of injury. Swimming laps also can be relaxing and meditative, which may offer some stress relief. Finally, swimming is an activity you can do throughout your life.

If you haven’t been swimming in a while, start slowly. Try swimming just five to 10 minutes while coordinating your breathing, strokes and kicking. Invest in a

These exercises are done in waist-deep or higher water and sometimes use floating devices and weights. Many community centers, YMCAs and other facilities with pools offer water aerobics classes.

One downside to swimming is, because it’s not weight-bearing, it’s not optimal for keeping your bones strong. If you do decide to take up swimming as your main form of aerobic exercise, you’ll need to supplement it with some weight-bearing exercise.

Strength training, walking, dancing, stair climbing or gardening all fit that bill.

True, they put stress on the knees. But the exercises will have strengthened support for your knees, and that should reduce any discomfort.

Severe arthritis of my right hip caused me to have a hip replacement. I attributed the arthritis in that hip to the jogging (on hard surfaces) I’d done for decades, so I stopped jogging. If I lived in Southern California (where I was raised) and had a pool, I would have switched to swimming.

However, in Boston where I live, only indoor pools have water most of the year, and getting to a pool every day is a hassle.

So I use an elliptical cross-trainer. It minimizes the impact on leg joints, though not as much as swimming. A local gym is very likely to have these machines.
