JOLIET – On any given day, thousands of judges, lawyers, bailiffs, clerks, jurors, defendants, plaintiffs, prisoners, witnesses and spectators pass through the Will County Courthouse.

Odds are at least one of them will have a problem that needs to be addressed.

“Jack-of-all trades, master of none. ...

You never know what you’re going to do from day to day,” Court Administrator Kurt Sangmeister said.

Though the chief judge runs the courts, he relies on the administrator to oversee operations of the courthouse. Sangmeister held the position for 20 years until his retirement Friday.

“I say as a joke, ‘Until I became chief judge I didn’t know what Kurt did,’ but I mean that as a credit to how well he’s handled everything,” Judge Richard Schoenstedt said. “You have to know where everything is, who to talk to, who to call when we have an issue.

“He doesn’t get a lot of phone calls saying, ‘Everything’s wonderful.’ I’ve never met a problem-solver like Kurt,” Schoenstedt said.

As court administrator, Sangmeister has overseen the budget, managed bargaining agreements with various unions and supervised hirings, disciplinary issues and long-term projects, such as the proposed new courthouse.

Sangmeister grew up in Mokena and planned to enter the business world, but was hired by the Attorney General’s Office to work in the consumer complaint division. He then audited probation depart-

ments throughout the state until the courts began implementing arbitration and mediation to resolve cases.

“I figured it was a good opportunity to return to Will County,” Sangmeister said.

“I was hired by the chief judge and started arbitration here, then became court administrator.”

Being a state employee managing a budget given by the county has caused “occasional friction and confusion over the

years,” Sangmeister said.

He felt technology has been the biggest change during his tenure, although there also is twice as many judges as the population has increased.

Sangmeister’s wife, Gina, also is retiring soon and the couple plan to move to Florida. Roger Holland, who has been Champaign County’s court administrator for 12 years, will take over in late June, Schoenstedt said.

Recycling Dream Machines leave JJC

The two machines – located in the A-Building cafeteria and J-Building cafe at the main campus – were used by students and staff at JJC for recycling competitions.

The first Dream Machine came to JJC in 2013.

Last year, JJC won second place in the nation and $15,000 for recycling 36,130 beverage containers, which equaled 1,974 pounds.

PepsiCo created the Dream Machine recycling program to help its goal of increasing the U.S. beverage container recycling rate, according to the PepsiCo website.

bokon@shawmedia.com ELWOOD – Speakers paid tribute to those who died in war and touched upon veterans’ issues Monday at the Memorial Day ceremony at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood.

At estimated 3,000-plus people attended the ceremony, which included speeches, music, military uniforms of past eras, fighter plane flyovers and a re-enactment of the Gettysburg Address.

The activities also included the laying of a wreath for Gold Star mothers, in addition to the laying of the Memorial Day wreath, as names were read of 19 Armed Forces members killed in battle and buried at the cemetery.

Mukoyama gave a brief history of Memorial Day, dating back to its

post-Civil War origins as Decoration Day, as a day devoted to honoring Americans who died in combat.

“Those we honor today now number more than 1 million,” Mukoyama said.

“They deserve our honor, our respect and our recognition as we gather here today.”

Mukoyama, a Chicago native who now lives in Glenview, was an infantry company commander in the Vietnam War and became the first Asian-American to command an Army division in 1989.

His speech focused on three topics: the history of Memorial Day, continued efforts to remember those who died in combat, and the importance of religion in the U.S. “I would take strong issue with those who suggest the Constitution in some way discourages the practice of religion,” Mukoyama said. “As a combat

Reports: 1 child drowned, another missing in Kankakee River

aschier@shawmedia.com WILMINGTON – A 13-year-old girl has drowned in the Kankakee River and her 12-year-old brother is missing, according to ABC7.

Wilmington Police Department Chief

Phillip Arnold confirmed the water rescue effort about 6:30 p.m. Monday, and crews were on scene much of the night.

The search for the boy was called off at nightfall, according to Joliet Patch.

The children were walking near a dam in the river, according to ABC7, and Joliet Patch stated the girl was

pulled out by bystanders.

Two people who went in after the children to try to save them were pulled from the river by rescuers, according to Joliet Patch, which stated one of the people was taken to a nearby hospital.

The search will resume at dawn as a recovery, according to Joliet Patch.

Mukoyama said he preached “spiritual fitness” to his soldiers and told them “whatever their religious beliefs, they should cling to them fiercely.”

He also commented on the suicide rate among veterans, which he called an “epidemic with 22 a day taking their lives.”

Mukoyama called for any veterans facing depression to seek help available from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. He twice gave the phone number for the veterans hotline of 1-800-273-8255.

“Use these resources,” he urged.

“You have served us. Let us serve you.”

U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth, D-Hoffman Estates, touched upon the issue of veterans homelessness in her

remarks at the ceremony.

“We are all dishonored when our veterans have to lay down their heads to sleep on the very streets they defended,” Duckworth said.

Duckworth, who lost both her legs while serving as an Army helicopter pilot in the Iraq War, also recognized soldiers who died in that war, including Sgt. 1st Class Bill Chaney from Chicago, a Vietnam War veteran who was 59 at the time.

“He was a chain-smokin’, hard-cussin’ Vietnam vet,” Duckworth said.

“There are quite a few of you in the audience now, and I love you all.”

The Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery continues to honor Vietnam War veterans as part of the 50th anniversary of that war.

The one civilian was a woman dressed as “Rosie the Riveter” who drew applause from the audience.

Charles Graham of Joliet, an organizer of the timeline, announced the service members of past eras and concluded at the end, “Something to remember today – without Memorial Day, we would not have any other holidays.”

The crowd also was thrilled by a flyover that seemed perfectly timed as two planes roared past right at the closing of a singing of “America the Beautiful.”

“Is that a way to finish a song?” Master of Ceremonies Nick Thomas called out to the crowd. “Beyonce doesn’t have anything like that over us in Elwood.”

The ceremony included for the first time the special wreath laying by Gold Star mothers Denise Meehan of Plainfield, whose son, Pfc. Andrew Meari, was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2010, and Linda Pahnke of Manhattan, whose son, Pvt. Shawn D. Pahnke, became the first Will County soldier to die in the Iraq War when he was hit by sniper fire in Baghdad in 2003.

“We remember him every day,” Pahnke said of her son after the ceremony. “But it’s important that others know what Memorial Day is all about.”

‘The coolest thing I’ve ever done’ Plainfield native is 1 of 40 contestants on the seventh season of Fox’s ‘MasterChef’

PLAINFIELD – Competing as one of the best home cooks in the United States is fitting when you grow up enjoying and preparing home-cooked meals.

But former Plainfield resident Diana Bilow might never have auditioned for the seventh season of Fox’s “MasterChef” if her roommate hadn’t insisted she do it.

“It made me a little proud that someone I cooked for on a regular basis thought I could be successful cooking on TV,” said Bilow, a server and burlesque dancer now living in Chicago.

Bilow and 39 other contestants competed in Los Angeles for the “MasterChef” title, a cookbook deal and the $250,000 grand prize, according to a news release from the show’s management company.

“MasterChef” is hosted and judged by world-renowned chef Gordon Ramsay and judged by Christina Tosi, the news release stated. The new season of

the show premieres at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Bilow said her childhood home was a “cooking place.” By the time Bilow was 13, she was cooking grilled pork chops and glazed carrots for her siblings – food Bilow called “suburban mom cooking.”

At 14, Bilow was working as a server.

As she became exposed to new foods and ways to prepare them, she became more adventurous in the kitchen – especially when she began living on her own at age 19 and cooking for her roommates.

“Burgers and fries weren’t cutting it anymore,” she said.

Bilow said she experimented with Mexican and Mediterranean cuisines.

She loved the idea of taking people on a journey through food, adapting recipes to suit the American palate.

“My signature is rack of lamb with gnocchi, little creative twists with classics from different cultures,” Bilow said.

Bilow said she felt a little disheartened when she saw the audition crowds.

She hadn’t expected that many people.

To Bilow’s astonishment, she quickly moved through the various levels.

“Two days after that, I was signing contracts,” she said.

Bilow said participating in MasterChef was the best experience of her life.

The amount of food knowledge she acquired from Ramsay and Tosi, as well as from her fellow competitors, was invaluable, she added.

“It was the coolest thing I’ve ever done,” Bilow said. “I have friends from all around the country now.”

PLAINFIELD – A 911 call for a barricade situation Sunday night in a Plainfield subdivision appears to be a false alarm.

The incident – which lasted from 6:45 to 10:15 p.m. – began when emergency dispatchers received a call about a home in the 24100 block of Nottingham Avenue in the Kensington Club subdivision, Plainfield Police Department Sgt. Mike Fisher said.

The caller stated he was armed, barricaded and had taken a juvenile hostage, Fisher said.

Police approached the home and, after a preliminary investigation, set up a perimeter and called in assisting agencies, including law enforcement from Joliet, Shorewood, Romeoville, Bolingbrook and Will County, as well as a SWAT team from Naperville.

Police cleared the area, evacuating

residents, according to a department news release, as well as closing the block to traffic and asking people nearby to stay indoors, Fisher said.

After a three-hour standoff with multiple attempts to make contact inside the home, the SWAT team checked the residence and found it to be empty.

Fisher said the home is an unoccupied, bank-owned residence, and what occurred Sunday night was likely a “swatting” incident.

Swatting is a phenomenon when a 911 caller tries to see whether their false report can elicit a SWAT team response, Fisher said. It occurs nationwide and sometimes the reports come from callers in locations far from the site of the response, or even out of state, Fisher said.

Police are examining the home, according to the news release, and anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Detective Sgt. Kevin McQuaid at 815-267-7209.

Relay For Life to be held at Joliet Memorial Stadium

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – An event to fight cancer will be held at Joliet Memorial Stadium.

Called Relay For Life, the event honors cancer survivors, remembers loved ones lost to cancer and raises funds to help fight it, according to the American Cancer Society.

Relay For Life teams will take laps Saturday around the track at Joliet Memorial Stadium, 3000 W. Jefferson St. The event will go from noon to midnight.

The event is not an actual relay, said Kristen Koppers, a Joliet West High School English teacher who is a volunteer sponsor and co-captain of Joliet West Students of Community Advocacy.

Koppers started the Relay For Life club in 2012 after her father died from pancreatic and colon cancer. Since its inception, the club has donated about $10,841 to the American Cancer Society. It has also participated in other fundraising efforts and events.

“The whole focus [of Relay For Life] is to have one person on the track as a symbol of awareness,” she said.

The movement has grown into an international phenomenon, raising almost $5 billion to fight cancer, according to the American Cancer Society.

Butts served as deputy counsel during Obama’s first year in office.

She left the next year to serve as a senior adviser to the Millennium Challenge Corp.

Obama nominated Butts in 2014 to be the U.S. ambassador to the Bahamas. Hers was one of several nominations that the Senate has failed to act on.

The president said in a statement Friday that Butts was someone who made him want to be better.

WASHINGTON – Cassandra Butts, former deputy White House counsel and a classmate and friend of President Barack Obama, has died, her family and Obama said.

She was 50.

Butts’ family said in a statement that her sister found Butts dead Thursday in her Washington home.

The statement said Butts had suffered from a brief illness.

Ethel J. Blahunka (nee Perilong), age 95, of Lockport, passed away peacefully Saturday, May 28, 2016, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

She was born in Montana and returned with her family to Lockport as an infant, where she lived the rest of her life. Ethel worked as an executive secretary for both United Airlines and Argonne National Laboratory. She was also an Avon representative for over 40 years.

Ethel enjoyed playing golf into her 80s, loved watching sports (especially her beloved Cubs) and, most of all, enjoyed being surrounded by her family. She was a longtime parishioner of St. Joseph’s Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph (2004); her parents, Oscar and Mary (Sartori) Perilong; and her brothers, Orris and Mario.

She is survived by her children, Mary Jo (Mike) Bequette, Robert, Paul (Kathy), Ann (Brad) Darin and Ted (Marge); eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; her sisters, Madeline Glynn and Gloria Derbick; and sisters-in-law, Mary Lazar and Sally Perilongo. Many nieces and nephews also survive.

Hope of budget deal before deadline dims

The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Illinois lawmakers signaled Monday they won’t have a budget deal before a key deadline, leaving the state hurtling toward another fiscal year without a spending plan and bringing further uncertainty to public schools, colleges and social services providers.

Leaders from both parties met with Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner on Monday in another attempt at compromise, exiting his office to deliver remarks that all but guaranteed they won’t find agreement before they adjourn their spring session Tuesday night.

“The bottom line for the taxpayers of Illinois is that as of tomorrow there will be no balanced budget,” Republican Senate Leader Christine Radogno said.

The meeting happened just moments after Democrats showed their force by overriding a Rauner veto on a proposal to lower Chicago’s pension payments for police and firefighters.

Lawmakers can still pass a budget after Tuesday, but it will be a heavy lift requiring three-fifths support from each chamber in what’s expected to be a bruising election year. A budget passed before the deadline would need only a simple majority.

Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan said after the meeting there was a “good exchange of ideas,” the brightest outlook he’s given yet after a discussion with Republican

leaders and the governor in recent weeks.

But even though he reported progress from legislative working groups trying to get a budget compromise, Madigan said the House is prepared to continue working through June.

“If there’s no agreement tomorrow night, I would ask the governor to keep his working groups functioning on a regular schedule because the House is going to ... schedule ourselves to be here every Wednesday through June starting next week,” Madigan said.

His chamber has already passed a budget that Rauner has said he’ll veto if it passes the Senate because it is $7 billion out of balance. By the Democrats’ design, that $40 billion spending plan includes funding for schools in an attempt to force Rauner’s hand; a veto would allow them to blame the governor if schools can’t open this fall.

The 11-month budget standoff on a budget that should’ve taken effect July 1 makes Illinois the only state in the country without a budget for the current fiscal year.

Already, that’s forced colleges and universities to lay off staff and decimated social service programs across the state.

About 90 percent of state’s spending is on autopilot because of court orders requiring funds for crucial services such as Medicaid and salaries for state workers. But those decrees don’t cover higher education institutions and some social service providers.

Illinois lawmakers propose study of lead in state water

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois lawmakers are commissioning a report from the state’s Environmental Protection Agency in an effort to better monitor lead levels in state water supplies.

A resolution the House Environment Committee approved Monday would require the state agency to conduct a study of lead in Illinois drinking water and publish results online. The agency would present a report to Gov. Bruce Rauner and the state Legislature between Sept.

1 and Dec. 31.

Chicago gets pension relief as Rauner veto overridden

SPRINGFIELD – Chicago taxpayers will save $1 billion on police and fire pension costs in the short term under a law the General Assembly approved Monday after some House Republicans bucked their governor, who had railed against it as a ridiculous expansion of the Illinois’ growing pension hole.

The House voted, 72-43, to override Gov. Bruce Rauner’s veto of the savings plan, which trumps state law that required the city to pump $4.62 billion into retirement accounts for police officers and firefighters through 2020.

CHICAGO – A police spokeswoman said two officers were hospitalized after a man set himself and a building on fire during a Chicago street festival.

Officer Michelle Tannehill told The Associated Press the officers were being treated for injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

The man also was in custody at a hospital, and the extent of his injuries wasn’t immediately known.

The incident happened around 7:30 p.m. in the southwestern part of the city a few blocks from the National Museum of Mexican Art.

Firefighter accused of using cigarettes in arsons

FREEPORT – The defense attorney for a northern Illinois firefighter accused of starting five fires said his client will have a mental evaluation.

Twenty-year-old Kenneth Grabow of Orangeville is next due in court July 7. He’s accused of tossing lit cigarettes to spark at least two of the blazes.

Grabow joined the volunteer Orangeville Fire Department in August. He’s charged with arson and criminal damage to property in connection with fires set at three barns, a shed and an abandoned home in the Orangeville area between April 14 and 19. Estimates are that each fire caused more than $10,000 damage.

Defense attorney Robert Fagan told The (Freeport) Journal-Standard that he doesn’t know whether Grabow is fit to stand trial or has any mental issues. Fagan said “that’s why we’re having him evaluated.”

22-year-old Illinois man dies in dirt bike accident

HEYWORTH – Authorities in central Illinois say a 22-year-old man died in a dirt bike accident.

Authorities identified the victim as Andrew Johnson of Heyworth. He was found Saturday afternoon in a creek near a wooded area in Heyworth.

McLean County Coroner Kathy Davis told The (Bloomington) Pantagraph that Johnson was unconscious from a blunt force head injury when he entered the water. Preliminary autopsy results indicate Johnson died of drowning because of the accident.

Toxicology results are pending. The McLean County Coroner’s Office and McLean County Sheriff’s Department are investigating.

Trump sits critically behind Clinton in digital campaign

PHILADELPHIA – Donald Trump trails Hillary Clinton by months, even years, in using fast-evolving digital campaigning to win over voters, data specialists working with the GOP say. The presumptive Republican presidential nominee has dismissed the science that defines 21st-century political campaigns, a tool that President Barack Obama used effectively in winning two terms and the Clinton campaign has worked on for nearly a year.

And while it is too early to tell whether the late start signals trouble for Trump, it illustrates the difference between Trump’s proudly outsider campaign and the institutional knowledge within Clinton’s.

“She’s been able to prepare a general election campaign since the beginning,” said Alex Lundry, former senior technology adviser to Mitt Romney’s 2012 Republican presidential campaign. “That head start in terms of time is extraordinarily valuable.”

Precision digital-marketing data, a person’s online footprints, have become an electoral science that Democrats have dominated, and Republicans have chased, for a decade. Campaigns used the data at first simply to track supporters.

The information now guides a range of decisions, such as the types and volume of advertising, where to deploy campaign staff to mobilize voters and where a candidate should visit.

Trump’s team has been unclear about its use of data in the general election.

the tool was “overrated” and he planned “limited” data use during the general election, although his campaign has worked with firms and a small in-house staff to track voters during the primaries.

Later, senior adviser Rick Wiley, who was hired in April, suggested Trump would run a “state of the art” campaign and use data strategically, relying on Trump’s own list of supporters, the Republican National Committee’s voter list and a data service financed largely by the RNC called Data Trust.

“All of the data points – whatever they are – our ability to harvest that data is invaluable,” said Wiley, the RNC’s former executive director. He has since left the campaign, after what a source close to the matter said were disagreements with Trump loyalists about who should lead campaign efforts in key states. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity, lacking authorization to discuss internal campaign matters publicly.

Given how Republicans have long trailed Democrats in digital campaigning, Trump’s grudging talk and Wiley’s departure hardly signal a rush to catch up. Trump spent more than $1 million in April on campaign paraphernalia such as caps, T-shirts and signs. Even as he was effectively seizing the nomination, he spent less than a third of that amount on data and related functions such as telemarketing.

Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign revolutionized the way technology could be used to identify and keep track of supporters who attended his campaign events and gave money to his candidacy.

Few holiday airport headaches, most wait times appear bearable

The Associated Press MIAMI – Travelers who had braced for long lines and long waits were instead moving through most U.S. airports fairly quickly Monday, as the busy Memorial Day travel weekend drew to close.

“Honestly it wasn’t too bad,” said Kendra Morehead of Wooster, Ohio, who flew from Detroit to Denver for a conference. “I got to the airport an hour and a half early, but security only took like 15 minutes.”

However, the airlines weren’t ready to say “mission accomplished” yet, as it’s just the beginning of the busy summer travel season.

“Things have been going pretty well so far this weekend and we are working hard to make sure that we have no repeat of what we saw in Chicago,” American Airlines spokesman Ross Feinstein said, referring to Chicago O’Hare International Airport, which had some of the worst screening problems in recent weeks.

The TSA began deploying extra canine teams to the busiest airports months ago. The dogs can screen large groups of passengers for explosives,

eliminating the need to remove shoes and laptops, TSA spokesman Mike England said last week.

The extra dogs were concentrated at the nation’s largest airports, but they weren’t used for all screenings. Many travelers still had to observe the usual procedures. England said the extra dogs would remain at security checkpoints well beyond the Memorial Day weekend.

At Miami International Airport, Fernando Del Gaudio arrived three hours early for a flight home to Buenos Aires, Argentina, only to find that the regular security lines and the prescreened lines in the American Airlines terminal were empty Monday evening.

“We’re more worried about the luggage, honestly,” he said as his wife worked to close a very full carry-on bag.

In some parts of Lambert-St. Louis International Airport, lines were nonexistent and ID-carrying travelers were outnumbered by clusters of TSA employees.

At John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City, travelers arriving from major cities such as San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix and

Miami said their security lines had been short.

Not everyone had a smooth trip, however. Bob Dunlap of Milford, Michigan, expected to wait an hour to get through a security line that snaked from the Denver airport’s cavernous security plaza all the way back to baggage claim.

He had tried to expedite his screening by arriving three hours early and checking his baggage. “What can you do?” he said with a shrug. “I’ve never been in a line like this for security, ever.”

At California’s Sacramento International Airport, an early morning photo posted on Twitter showed a line into the airport stretching all the way back to a parking garage. The dispatcher said that was taken during the airport’s busiest part of the day and the line had shrunk by late morning.

At Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta, travelers swiftly wove through ropes directing them toward the main TSA checkpoint Monday afternoon. In recent weeks, passengers at the same checkpoint inside the world’s busiest airport have waited in single-file lines stretching into the airport’s atrium or back to baggage claim.

NEW YORK – Nearly 40,000 striking Verizon employees will return to work Wednesday after reaching a tentative contract agreement that includes 1,300 new call center jobs and nearly 11 percent in raises over four years but also makes health care plan changes to save the company money, the company and unions said Monday.

The pact, subject to approval by union members, stands to end one of the largest strikes in the United States in recent years. Workers and Verizon Communications Inc. had reached an agreement in principle Friday but hadn’t released details or a date for the workers’ return. The strike began in mid-April.

The Communications Workers of America and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers unions, which both represent the strikers, called the deal a victory for American workers.

“We are turning the tide from cutbacks against working people to building a stronger labor movement and strengthening the power of working Americans,” Dennis G. Trainor, vice president of the union’s District 1 in the Northeast, said in a statement. The IBEW said it protected American jobs amid concern about concern about work moving overseas.

New York-based Verizon Communications Inc. said it was a good deal for workers, customers and the telecom giant alike.

“This will allow our business to be more flexible and competitive,” chief administrative officer Marc Reed said in a statement.

Union members will vote on the deal after returning to work.

Besides the raises and new call center jobs, the tentative agreement includes $1,250 in signing bonuses and health care reimbursements for new workers, a 25 percent increase in the number of unionized crews maintaining Verizon’s utility poles in New York state, and three 1 percent increases in pensions, which Verizon had proposed to freeze, the CWA said. It also includes a first-ever contract for wireless retail store workers, affecting 70.

The deal also entails changes that Verizon says will save significant money, such as adopting Medicare Advantage plans – private health insurance contracted with the government-sponsored Medicare program – rather than costlier insurance.

All-out political war all but certain between Rauner, Madigan After what happened last week, it’s more clear than ever that Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan has no fear of what Gov. Bruce Rauner could do to his members this fall. And Madigan has even less fear of what his members could do to him.

As you certainly know by now, Madigan lumped together a $40 billion appropriations plan with what the governor’s budget office says is a $7.5 billion hole in it. The budget office claims the bill would require a 5.5 percent personal income tax rate to sustain and the state comptroller estimates would create $15 billion in backlogged bills and an eight- to ninemonth payment delay.

Madigan’s move was at least partly designed to put Republicans on the defense yet again this fall for voting against their local schools and colleges, facilities and various government programs.

Republican threats to tie Madigan’s “most unbalanced budget in Illinois history” around his members’ necks did not faze him. Madigan’s own polling reportedly shows Donald Trump doing pretty well everywhere except Cook County and that didn’t budge him. And just about all of Madigan’s most politically vulnerable members voted for the highly controversial legislation – another very clear signal

Yes, the Republicans have their “Bad King Madigan” bogeyman, the Democrats concede, and the Republicans used it again last week in tens of thousands of robocalls targeted at seven House Democratic incumbents.

The calls claimed that the members backed “Speaker Mike Madigan’s job-crushing, $1,000 tax hike on Illinois families,” which would also “increase Illinois’ debt by $7 billion and force record high income tax rates.”

The Republicans also released results of a statewide “flash poll” conducted last Thursday night that they claim validates their planned messaging against Madigan and the Democrats this fall. Seventy-four percent of the 884 voters who responded to the Victory Phones poll said they opposed “a budget that would spend $7.2 billion more than what state takes in and force a 47 percent tax increase on all Illinoisans.” An additional 57 percent said they opposed a “state budget that includes a half-billion-dollar Chicago

Public School bailout.” Seventy-one percent said “rank-and-file Democrats should break with the speaker and work with the governor to balance the budget even if it means compromising on issues favored by labor unions.”

And 61 percent said they’d be less likely to vote for a legislator who “voted for a budget with a $7 billion deficit that would force income tax rates over 5.5 percent.”

To the Republicans, those are slamdunk issues that will resonate strongly with voters. The Democrats, they say, simply don’t understand the public’s mood. They believe they have the Democrats exactly where they want them and that Madigan has ironically put them in that position by passing the unbalanced budget and refusing to negotiate on the governor’s economic reforms that Rauner claims will help revitalize the state’s economy.

But Madigan’s side points to Rauner’s ever-tanking poll ratings as proof they can use him against Republican candidates, and they’ll toss in Donald Trump wherever the presidential candidate is unpopular.

And while voters always say they want a balanced budget, they almost always recoil when told what that would actually entail. Details of the $7.5 billion in cuts which “the Trump/Rauner Republicans demanded” via the

governor’s expected veto will make for some grisly campaign advertisements.

The Senate Democrats did pretty much just that to the Republicans during the last presidential campaign cycle and picked up seats despite raising the income tax by 67 percent – which is a big reason why the governor has twice now refused to submit a truly balanced budget. Once the Republicans vote against overriding Rauner’s budget veto for the second year in a row, they’ll be on the record for huge cuts.

The governor has said for over a year that Madigan’s Democrats privately tell him they’re ready to work with him. But there’s little evidence that they’ll work with Rauner at the expense of crossing Madigan. Just the opposite, in fact. They could’ve killed that budget bill and changed the course of Illinois history by forcing Madigan to the bargaining table, but they stuck with their guy.

Madigan was in a good mood Thursday night as he dined with some of his members. Rauner was also said to be at peace. With an all-out political war all but certain, they could come to terms with it and steel themselves for the future.

National park safety is for all to follow Two unpleasant incidents in Yellowstone National Park this month demonstrate how ignorance can be harmful.

On May 14, several members of a group called High on Life SundayFundayz walked into a sensitive Yellowstone Park hot spring.

That’s illegal, so three arrest warrants were issued, but authorities said the group members might have already returned to Canada by midweek.

Perhaps these “adventurers” had not heard of tourists walking off designated paths and getting scalded to death by boiling-hot water in the park. Maybe they were thrill-seekers, or folks taking a “look at me” approach. Whatever their motivations, they should have stayed on marked trails as they were told.

The group initially posted photographs and video of their trek onto the Grand Prismatic Spring, but later apologized and offered to make a $5,000 donation to the park.

That’s something, but they should never have gone into the spring in the first place.

Park officials said walking into a hot spring can damage sensitive wet, soft bacterial mats inside a spring. A fourth man involved in the incident has not been charged because he was not yet identified, officials said.

Yellowstone officials cited the hot springs walkers May 16, the same day they cited another group of visitors to Yellowstone for picking up a bison calf and placing it in their vehicle because they thought the calf needed help. The National Park Service later had to euthanize the calf after bison refused efforts by park rangers to return the calf to the herd.

It was a sad end to the bison calf and a reminder to human beings that national parks such as Yellowstone and Glacier are not amusement parks such as Disneyland ...

Area medal winners proud of efforts

cherron@shawmedia.com CHARLESTON – When you make a big improvement from one year to the next and become one of the top finishers in boys track and field in your program’s history, you can’t be too disappointed, and that certainly was the case for Lincoln-Way West’s Evan Mitchell.

The Warriors junior moved up from 15th to fourth in the 3,200 at last Saturday’s IHSA Class 2A finals. As a result, he posted their second-best state showing, just one spot behind where Mark

Pedziwiatr finished in the 800 in 2012.

“Taking fourth place in 2A is awesome since this is my first time being all-state in track,” said Mitchell, who became West’s first all-stater in cross country last fall. “This is a big stepping stone for me for next year. Last year I had a respiratory illness and it was like 90 degrees. I feel like I could have done better this year, but I’m still happy with this.”

Plainfield South senior John Partee wanted to improve upon last year’s third-place finish in the 800 in 3A and hoped to contend with the eventual champ, Sandburg’s Chris Torpy. But

to do that, he needed to make a move to the front and hope that it might produce an upset win.

But Torpy wound up winning decisively and a few others passed Partee late as he claimed sixth place. Despite that, the Cougars senior joined Jake Winder as the program’s only multiple individual medalists and became the first to achieve that feat on the track.

“Coming into the last lap, I was hoping to just follow with Torpy since I know that he finishes strong in the last 400,” Partee said. “But with about 250 to go, I tightened up quite a bit and then it was about running with what I

had left. But it was still a good race and I’m happy.”

After taking second in the 1,600 and placing in the 3,200 last year in 1A, Seneca senior Ross McCormick had big expectations for this season. But injuries prevented him from becoming a twotime all-stater in cross country and also threatened his prospects in track.

But McCormick performed well again at this year’s finals, placing fifth in the 800 and seventh in the 1,600 to become Seneca’s all-time leader in individual medals won with four.

Trost guided Lewis to its thirdstraight 20-plus win season, including its first GLVC title in 14 seasons and a 24-9 record.

“I definitely had high goals coming into the cross country and track season,” McCormick said. “I wanted to lower my times a lot, so I put in a lot of training in the summer, but I ended up getting a stress fracture in my tibia, and that was real disappointing.

I didn’t have much distance training, so I didn’t do the 2-mile and went with the 800 and the mile. I wish that I could have run the 2-mile, but I’m real happy to get two medals again. It was pretty cool.”

Despite competing in the sport for just two years, Plainfield Central senior Mike Lyons was able to claim sixth place in high jump in 3A. As a result, he became the first Wildcat to earn a medal in his event at the state finals.

“I would like to thank all of the coaches, my family, friends and everyone who has supported me,” Lyons said. “I really wanted the state championship, but I couldn’t finish it today.

Still, it was a good season overall. I’m really proud of the work that I’ve put in and glad that I made it this far. I’m glad that I finally got out for the program and should have done it earlier.

Basketball was my dream, but it didn’t work out for me, but this has worked out for me.”

Providence junior Lucas Weaver watched his brother Chad take two thirds in pole vault and then Andy Jatis go third and second over the last four years. On Saturday, he placed eighth in the event in 3A to give the Celtics a pole vault medal for the fifth straight season.

“We’ve been lucky to have some good pole vaulters and behind me there’s another, Nico Planeta,” Weaver said. “Chad was our first real vaulter in a long time and ever since then Mike Karl has coached us well. We’ve

Murawski, the junior catcher who was 2 for 3 on the night, was equally impressed by the performance of Headrick.

“Tonight was difficult because of the movement,” he said. “My hand hurts, but that is good. Brent did his

thing tonight, but when we scored those three first-inning runs, it really helped relax everyone on the team. We knew what this game meant and it was pretty nerve-wracking leading up to the start.”

The Comets’ pitching coach, Jake Evans, who calls the pitches, knew Headrick was going to have a special night while warming up in the bullpen.

“I saw the pop and the movement on his fastball when Brent was warming up,” he said. “I told Jerry (Cougill) that he has it tonight. He (Headrick) was in total control and we really came at them with his fastball tonight.

He made my job of calling pitches pretty easy tonight.”

Who will get the ball this weekend?

“We (Cougill and Evans) will sit down and talk about it. Brent will be one of the days, but we have total confidence in anyone we put out there,” Evans said. “At least we get to have that discussion this week.”

Cubs ’pen perfect for 7 innings in 1-hit win over Dodgers

The Associated Press CHICAGO – Travis Wood and three other relievers combined for seven perfect innings after starter Jason Hammel left with cramps, and the Cubs held the Los Angeles Dodgers to one hit in a 2-0 victory Monday.

Hammel exited after his right hamstring cramped while warming up for the third inning. Wood (3-0) pitched four perfect innings in his longest stint of the season.

Justin Grimm, Pedro Strop and Hector Rondon pitched one inning each for the Cubs, with Rondon getting his ninth save. He has converted 20 straight save opportunities dating back to Aug. 14.

Ben Zobrist extended his hitting streak to a career-high-tying 16 games.

He singled leading off the fifth and reached third when right fielder Yasiel Puig misplayed the ball. He scored on Jason Heyward’s infield single.

Anthony Rizzo drove home Heyward with a double to right.

Zobrist has reached base in his last 35 starts, the longest streak by a Cub since Starlin Castro’s 40 in 2011.

The Cubs (35-14) have the best record in baseball and are a season-high

21 games over .500. They have won six straight since dropping eight of 12.

LISLE – Comets usually are seen high in the night sky.

Monday night they were prevalent all over the baseball field, and the brightest was on the mound at the Class 2A Benedictine Supersectional, as Reed-Custer beat Chicago DePaul College Prep, 5-0.

With the win, the Comets advance to the 2A state semifinals Friday at Dozer Park in Peoria, with a 5 p.m. game against Rockford Lutheran, who won 12-5 over Macomb.

It will be the Comets’ first appearance in the state finals since 2007 under the old two-class system, when eight teams went to the final weekend.

Reed-Custer senior Brent Headrick was dominant on the mound, recording his 10th victory of the season against one loss. The Illinois State recruit recorded 17 strikeouts, 11 of which were the first 11 outs of

the game. The left-hander gave up only three hits and walked three in the complete-game victory. The Rams managed single hits in the first, fifth and seventh innings.

“I knew this was a big game and I was ready a few days ago,” Headrick said. “I felt really good warming up and I just got the ball and pitched my game. The adrenaline was really flowing. Our team really came through and I can’t wait to get to Peoria.”

Headrick also added a triple and a walk at the plate.

The Comets didn’t waste any time getting on the scoreboard as they got three runs in the bottom of the first.

After Neil O’Donnell was hit by a pitch, Jordan Walden scorched an RBI double and catcher Hunter Murawski hit an RBI triple. Eddie Wilkins ended the scoring with a sacrifice fly.

Penguins edge Sharks in Game 1

The Associated Press PITTSBURGH – Nick Bonino’s main job for the Pittsburgh Penguins is to get to the front of the net and create chaos. The well-bearded forward executed perfectly in his debut in the Stanley Cup Final.

by Kris Letang and beat Martin Jones from in close with 2:33 remaining to lift the Penguins to a 3-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks in Game 1 on Monday night.

Rookies Bryan Rust and Conor Sheary staked Pittsburgh to an early two-goal lead before the Sharks tied it in the second period on goals by Tomas Hertl and Patrick Marleau.

The Penguins responded by upping the pressure in the final period and it paid off with Bonino’s fourth goal of the playoffs after he darted to the San Jose net in time to knuckle Letang’s pass by Jones for the winner.

Game 2 is Wednesday night in Pittsburgh.

Matt Murray finished with 24 saves for Pittsburgh, which began its bid for the fourth title in franchise history by peppering Jones constantly in the first and final periods. Jones made 38 stops but couldn’t get his blocker on Bonino’s wrist shot. The Penguins threw 41 shots at Jones, well over the 28 he faced on average during San Jose’s playoff run.

The Sharks made it to the first Stanley Cup Final in franchise history by rebuilding themselves on the fly. Two years removed from a brutal collapse from a 3-0 series lead in the first round against Los Angeles, San Jose ended a 9,005 day wait to play in the NHL’s championship round by relying on a tough, aggressive style that squeezes opponents with a relentless forecheck while limiting chances in front of Jones.

Yet veterans Marleau and Joe Thornton – the top two picks in the 1997 draft held in Pittsburgh who had waited nearly two decades to make it to the league’s biggest stage – insisted the Sharks were hardly satisfied after dispatching St. Louis in a cathartic Western Conference finals.

Maybe, but the Sharks looked a step slow – maybe two steps slow – while searching for their footing against the Penguins, who rallied from a 3-2 deficit to edge the Tampa Bay Lightning in seven games to advance to their first Cup Final since 2009.

Rust, who surprisingly made the team out of training camp and became an unlikely playoff star by scoring both of Pittsburgh’s goals in Game 7 against the Lightning, gave the Penguins the lead 12:46 into the first when he slammed home a rebound off a Justin Schultz shot for his sixth of the postseason, a franchise record for playoff goals by a rookie.

Less than a minute later Sheary, who didn’t become a regular until the middle of January, made it 2-0 when Sidney Crosby whipped a blind backhand cross-ice pass to Sheary’s stick. The rookie’s wrist shot from the right circle zipped by Jones and the Penguins appeared to be in complete command by overwhelming the Sharks in a way few have in months.

San Jose and its group of Cup newcomers regained its composure in the intermission and responded with a big surge. Hertl jammed a shot from just outside the crease between Murray’s legs on the power play 3:02 into the second to give the Sharks momentum.

NEW YORK – On the mound in the seventh inning for the first time this season, Matt Harvey gave up his first walk of the game and his second hit, leading to a sacrifice bunt and a second-and-third jam.

“You kind of think about the worst at that point,” he said. “You start getting some negative thoughts that creep in your head.”

But 11 days after disappointed fans at Citi Field booed him like a villain, the Dark Knight was back – at least for one afternoon.

Harvey retired Todd Frazier on a foulout and J.B. Shuck on a grounder to escape trouble, Neil Walker homered off Jose Quintana on the second pitch of the bottom half and the New York Mets beat the White Sox, 1-0, Monday to send the reeling Sox to their seventh straight loss.

“Today’s a big first step,” Mets manager Terry Collins said.

Addison Reed and Jeurys Familia got six straight outs to complete the two-hitter, preserving Harvey’s first win since May 8. Harvey struck out six, walked two and threw four pitches of 98-98.5 mph after not topping 97.5 mph previously this season. He threw 61 of 87 pitches for strikes.

“A lot of it had to do with timing and staying over the rubber a little bit longer, so that would kind of free up everything, free up my arm basically to get to the arm slot that I needed to,” Harvey said.

According to Collins, Harvey’s attitude adjustment was more important. Smiles replaced scowls in recent days.

Truex seeking bigger things after Charlotte romp

CONCORD, N.C. – Martin Truex Jr. believes big things are ahead, even bigger than his record run at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Truex ruled the Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday night, leading 588 of 600 miles to set a Sprint Cup record. It was his fourth career victory and first in nearly a year, although he’s come close in

several other races.

Truex thinks his single-car, west of the Mississippi program has the potential to win championships, like the very best teams in NASCAR. “This is one of those dream teams that if you stay together five, six or seven years, you could start doing things like Jimmie Johnson and Chad Knaus have done,” Truex said Sunday. “We want to win races, we want to win championships, we want to win

every single week.”

Charlotte was an eye-opening start.

Truex won the pole Thursday night and ran strongly at practice. No one, though, saw this amazing performance coming – Truex led 392 of 400 laps in NASCAR’s longest race.

Usually, Truex said, Charlotte is a hot, grueling affair where drivers jostle with rivals, deal with changing conditions from late afternoon to evening and wonder when the finish will

come. This time, Truex was surprised at how quickly the laps passed and how he found all that open space.

Not everything was perfect: Truex had a mid-race wobble that NASCAR greats turned TV analysts Darrell Waltrip and Jeff Gordon speculated was a blown tire. (It turns out it almost was, Truex crew chief Cole Pearn said.)

There was also a moment after the third restart when Jimmie Johnson briefly moved in front. Truex just swung around the six-time Sprint Cup champion and took control for good.

A host of NASCAR blueblood drivers and pedigree programs followed Truex.

Two-time Charlotte winner Kevin Harvick was second and Johnson third. Hamlin, who won the Xfinity race on this track Saturday, finished fourth with Brad Keselowski next.

Kurt Busch was sixth, then Matt Kenseth, Chase Elliott, Joey Logano and Ryan Newman.

None of them had anything to slow Truex.

“It seemed like the 78 must have led the whole race,” Harvick said. “Those guys definitely have had some fast cars this year.”

Just not fast enough to win until now.

Truex was a few feet from winning NASCAR’s signature race, the Daytona 500 in February, where he fell short to Denny Hamlin. Truex led the most laps in Texas and Kansas, yet was waylaid by bad pit strategy in the first one and wheel problems in the second.

Truex came into the season hoping to capitalize on his final four show-

ing in the Chase for a Championship, where he had a chance to take the title at Homestead last November. He said the Charlotte win is the boost he needs.

Especially given the program’s unconventional setup. Furniture Row Racing is based in Denver, meaning it’s far from NASCAR’s Charlotte hub.

In fact, Pearn said the team flew back West between the All-Star race in Charlotte last week and the 600.

They did refine a few things at the Joe Gibbs Racing shop – owner Barney Visser is aligned with Gibbs – to prepare for the Memorial Day weekend event.

Visser says the obstacles haven’t dampened the fire to succeed that’s steadily grown since 2011. That’s when Furniture Row surprised the Sprint Cup world, with Regan Smith taking the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway.

Truex is the difference maker, Visser said.

“It’s good to have a driver who can get this kind of stuff done,” Visser said. “Martin’s as good as anybody out there right now and it’s fun to watch.”

Truex also is having fun watching a team bond into championship material.

“I feel like our guys are the best there is and we can keep this thing going,” he said. “We can do some special things.”

Williams syndrome works in Noah Baker’s favor

JOLIET – “Who is the king of the school? It’s me!”

Despite the fact that Joliet Central High School prom was May 13, Noah Baker, 18, of Joliet, still is elated with his title of “prom king,” a bliss that’s unlikely to diminish anytime soon.

And if anyone deserved to be prom king, said Sara Koziol, Baker’s peer trainer with the Adaptive Vocational Academic Center program at Joliet Central, it was Baker.

“He’s given so many smiles and laughs to so many people,” Koziol said, “I thought I owed him for all the happiness he’s brought to everyone else.”

But the title wasn’t given to this special-needs 18-year-old. Baker had to work for it and he came against some formidable competition. Patty Edwards, adapted physical education teacher, who asked Koziol if she would run with Baker, said 10 of the most popular boys at the high school also campaigned.

But like Koziol, Edwards believed Baker and the title were a regal fit.

“He has a spirit that instills inspiration in everyone he encounters,” Edwards said. “He’ll say, ‘Hello’ to you and be friendly, and if someone is missing from my class, he always welcomes them back by saying, ‘We missed you. You’re part of the JT family.’ He makes everyone feel special.”

Noah has Williams syndrome, a genetic condition that is present at birth and can affect anyone. About one in 10,000 people worldwide and 20,000 in the United States have the syndrome, according to the Williams Syndrome Association website.

In addition to medical problems, developmental delays and learning disabilities, people with the syndrome also have keen verbal and social skills and a high affinity for music. In fact, music therapy, starting at Troy School District 30-C and continuing through high school, has benefited Baker, said his mother, Sue Baker.

Although the syndrome itself wasn’t immediately apparent, Sue knew something was different about this fifth son out of six children, Sue said. Finally, she took her son to a specialist at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.

The specialist wanted to do genetic testing. It turned out he was an expert

“It’s like walking around with Mick Jagger,” Sue said.

An entire team helped Noah plan and promote his prom king campaign.

Edwards said AVEC teacher Jim Burkey made posters, which Koziol distributed around the school. Koziol also continued the “Vote for Noah” campaign on social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Noah distributed cookies his family baked and delivered his oft-repeated tagline: “Hashtag vote for Noah.”

He and Koziol wore matching T-shirts that read #voteforNoah.

“Next thing I knew, I was hearing

feedback from kids at Minooka and Joliet West,” Koziol said. “It spread like wildfire.”

Sue said Noah picked out his own tuxedo. On prom night, he presented flowers to his cousin Shannon Gallagher of Orland Park (his prom date) and to Koziol. Then came the thrilling announcement.

“This lady called, ‘Noah Baker,’ and everyone was clapping and cheering for me,” Noah said. “My friend Sara was like, ‘Noah! You won!’ It was great seeing all my friends and family being there for me.”

Koziol did not win prom queen, but to Sue, she is better than royalty.

“I can’t even say in words how kind and wonderful she was in totally being a friend to Noah in a friend kind of way,” Sue said. “She was just great.”

According to the Williams Syndrome Association at williams-syndrome.org, the following symptoms are characteristic of the genetic condition: • Certain facial features – a small upturned nose, long philtrum (upper lip length), wide mouth, full lips, small chin and puffiness around the eyes.

• Heart and blood vessel problems – narrowing in the aorta producing supravalvular aortic stenosis or narrowing in the pulmonary arteries, ranging from mild to severe.

• Hypercalcemia – when present, high blood calcium levels can cause irritability or colic.

Difficulties in metabolizing calcium and Vitamin D may resolve in childhood or become lifelong.

• Low birth weight or slow weight gain – may be labeled as “failure to thrive.” Adult stature is smaller than average.

• Feeding problems in infants and small children – linked to low muscle tone, severe gag reflex, poor suck or swallow abilities and tactile defensiveness.

• Dental abnormalities – slightly small, widely spaced teeth in children, and abnormalities of occlusion, tooth shape or appearance.

• Kidney abnormalities – in structure and function.

• Hernias – inguinal and/or umbilical may occur.

• Sensitive hearing – certain frequencies or noise levels can be painful and/or startling.

May improve with age.

• Musculoskeletal problems – low muscle tone and joint laxity in children and joint stiffness in adults.

• Excessively social – expressive language skills, extremely polite, unafraid of strangers.

• Learning disabilities and cognitive challenges – can range from mild to severe.

Volunteers needed for Ombudsman Program

JOLIET – Catholic Charities’ Ombudsman Program protects and promotes the rights and quality of life for those who reside in long-term care facilities in Kankakee, Will and Grundy counties.

Staff and volunteers in the Ombudsman Program are advocates who seek to resolve complaints on behalf of individuals who receive long-term care services.

Program team members also ensure that the interests of residents are represented to policymakers and governmental agencies.

Linden Oaks in Naperville offers program for binge eating disorder NAPERVILLE – Linden Oaks Behavioral Health is offering “Am I Hungry,” a series of 10 two-hour workshops for individuals who struggle with binge eating disorder or compulsive overeating.

The program will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays, June 8 to Aug. 10 at Linden Oaks, 852 West St. on the campus of Edward Hospital in Naperville. The cost is $400. Registration is required. To register, call 630-527-6363.

Each registrant will receive a copy of “Eat What You Love, Love What You Eat for Binge Eating” and the companion workbook to help guide the process of cultivating a mindset of hope and recovery.

Joliet West High School SOCA Club support Relay for Life

JOLIET – The Joliet West Students of Community Advocacy recently participated in the “Paint the Town Purple” weekend scavenger hunt, earning over 8,000 points by securing six sponsorships, thanking businesses for being smoke free, tying purple ribbons on 81 trees around the Joliet/Shorewood areas, placing three signs at businesses and hanging 15 posters around the town.

In four years with only a team of seven to nine active participants and students per year, the club has donated $10,841.86 to the American Cancer Society.

Every year Kristen Koppers, an English teacher at Joliet West High School, sets a goal for her students to meet. This year the goal was $3,500 which was met in

school’s fifth- and sixth-graders to raise dollars for the nonprofit association, then compete with each other during their physical education classes with such basketball games as knock-out, dribble knock-out, dribble freeze tag, scrimmage and jump rope.

In addition, Hoops for Heart activities included learning about heart-healthy eating and lifestyles. This past year, the club has also organized a Feed my Starving Children event, Coins for Coats, a Special Olympics event, local food pantry donations, a blood drive, a buddy system for new students, preparing holiday food baskets, making plastic bag mats for the homeless, running a Lakewood Nursing Home bingo and making cards for hospitalized children.

30 Treatment varies for arterial blockages Dear Dr. K: A test showed a 50 percent blockage in one of my coronary arteries.

That sounds pretty bad to me. But the cardiologist said I didn’t need an angioplasty and stent. Why? Dear Reader: Coronary arteries send needed blood to the heart muscle. That blood flow can be blocked by cholesterol-rich plaques of atherosclerosis. When the blockage seriously reduces blood flow, it increases your risk of a heart attack. An angioplasty and stents can be helpful for restoring blood flow, but the procedure is not risk-free.

Every time a doctor considers whether to order a test or a treatment, he or she balances the likely benefit against the likely risk. When an artery feeding the heart muscle is blocked “just” 50 percent, there still is good blood flow to the heart. So the benefit of reducing that blockage is small.

But I’m getting ahead of myself. Let me describe how an angioplasty and stent work. First, the doctor pushes a soft tube (a catheter) from an artery in your leg or arm up to your heart. Inside the catheter is a thinner catheter that has an inflatable balloon near its tip. And inside that catheter is an even thinner wire with a soft tip.

Once the catheter reaches the heart, the doctor guides the wire down the artery until the wire tip is beyond the blockage and the balloon is right where the blockage is. Then the doctor inflates the balloon. This squashes the plaque against the wall of the artery, making the inside of the artery wider. As a result, blood flows through the area more easily.

Around the catheter, surrounding the balloon, is a tiny, expandable mesh wire tube: a stent. When the balloon is in-

However, the expanded stent is left in place, keeping the plaque squashed against the wall of the artery and allowing good blood flow through the artery. Most stents are coated with a drug that helps to prevent re-narrowing of the artery.

Minor risks of angioplasty include discomfort and bleeding at the insertion site. Rare but more serious risks (such as a heart attack) occur in about 3 percent of people undergoing the procedure. And to prevent blood clots at the stent site, people need to take anti-clotting medications for up to a year afterward.

As a result, cardiologists typically don’t do angioplasties with stents unless an artery is at least 70 percent blocked.

That’s the point at which the benefit of stenting outweighs the risks.

There are many ways to slow the growth of plaques – in your case, to keep the plaque from increasing from 50 percent to 70 percent blockage. If you are not already doing so, ask your doctor if you should be taking medications, such as aspirin, and cholesterol- or blood-pressure-lowering drugs. You also should exercise regularly and eat a heart-healthy diet. Finally, if you smoke, quit.

I’m a 51-year-old gay male. I have a sweet, dear friend I’ll call “Samantha” who is slightly older. The problem is, she wants more than friendship. Yes, the 3-0 heart break was unlucky, but since the spade nine was in the dummy, the opening lead had to be a singleton or high from a doubleton. At trick two, South should have led his diamond to cut the defenders’ communications in that suit.

This is called a scissors coup.
