Wright Brothers Exhibition Team – Princeton With the success of their first flight of 1903, the Wright brothers had proved that flight was possible. By 1908, they had perfected their aeronautical engineering and created a machine they could control and fly.

The same year they founded the Wright Company and began selling planes. To survive in the industry they had created, the Wrights created an exhibition team to keep their competitors in check and appeal to the public in order to sell airplanes.

In 1910, Wilbur and Orville Wright established a team of aviators to exhibit their flying machine. Dirigible pilot, Augustus Roy Knabenshue, was hired by the Wrights to manage the team and gathered a handful of students to begin training for the air shows.

The Wright team made its first public appearance on June 13, 1910, at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The team would exhibit their flying machines in air shows across the country until 1911.

Crating and uncrating their aircraft from rail cars, thrilling crowds, dealing with local promoters, counting gate receipts, competing with rival exhibition aviators and setting aerial records, the Wright exhibition pilots introduced the airplane to dozens of small towns across the Unites States, including Princeton.

There were rewards and risks in this business. The shows earned acclaim in the press and adoration by the crowds.

Accidents also began to happen, and two of the team’s star fliers were killed. As newer pilots were trained and joined the team, performances continued across the country. The last big meet the team participated in was in Chicago in August 1911.

J. Clifford Turpin was the first Purdue University graduate student to become an aviator. He received his flight training from Orville Wright and would eventually join the Wright Exhibition Team, which was a group of early aviators trained by the Wright brothers. The

The following day, an estimated 9,000 people gathered at the Bureau County Fairgrounds to watch as Turpin soared into the sky. The interurban ran special trains from Morris to Princeton to accommodate all the spectators. Turpin made four successful flights that reached altitudes of 2500 feet before touching down, each time, to standing ovations.

Pvt. Russell, like thousands, gave his life for his country

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Pvt. George J. Russell was never famous, although he did make the front page of the newspaper once.

Russell’s photograph appeared on page one of The Herald-News on June 14, 1944, after he was killed at the Battle of Anzio during World War II. The newspaper article mentioned Russell had been in the Army nine months, had a medal for marksmanship, and had told his wife in a letter that he had been sent on a “secret mission.”

“Pvt. George J. Russell Gave Live for His Country May 23,” reads the subheadline to the story.

Russell was not much different from other local soldiers who got the same headline during World War II. But that alone makes them memorable, said Jim Kubalewski of Joliet, a retired social worker who has created in a glass-enclosed case a small memorial to Russell.

“He was only 31 and had a whole life to live,” Kubalewski said. “He gave it all up. All those lives that are given up mean very much. I hope not only he will be remembered, but all of those who died in war are remembered as individuals.”

Kubalewski had only the slightest connection to Russell.

Kubalewski didn’t even know Russell’s full name when he first started to think of him.

All he knew is something his mother-in-law once said – that when she lived at 314 Ruby St. in Joliet, a woman next door, named Katherine Russell, had lost a son at Anzio and that he had been buried overseas.

Years later, in 2010, Kubalewski visited the Normandy American Cemetery in France and was impressed by the sight of the rows of markers more than 9,387 American soldiers who died in D-Day. Sometime after that, he began to think about the seemingly endless rows of markers and the story he had heard about Mrs. Russell’s son.

That began what Kubalewski called “a periodic obsession” that led him to eventually learn the identity of the neighbor boy who died at Anzio, fighting with the Third Division, 30th Infantry Regiment that had seen some of the fiercest combat in the invasion of Italy.

Russell’s history that this became very personal,” Kubalewski said. “He was an individual who had a mom and a dad and a marriage. This was a person with a personal life – not just a marker.”

In a Google search he found that a George J. Russell was buried at the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery in Nettuno, Italy, with 7,861 other American soldiers.

But when he asked his sister-inlaw, who would have lived next door to George Russell, she remembered a boy named Joe. She also said the boy saved her life when she was a little girl by jumping into an out-of-control car she had started and stopping it before it rolled into a steep ditch.

When Kubalewski went to the county records office and found the birth certificate of a George Joseph Russell born in Joliet on Aug. 19, 1912 to Frank and Katherine Russell, he concluded Pvt. Russell was called “Joe” because of his middle name.

The search took almost a surreal

twist when Kubalewski’s wife found a box of papers that belonged to her mother. In it were certain items that were Katherine Russell’s.

They included a photocopy of a

telegram that informed Pvt. Russell’s wife, Catherine, her husband had been killed at Anzio.

New memorial honors area veteran

hlitchfield@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – Flags flapped sharply in the breeze Sunday as music that represented the armed services played in the background at the Ceco Recreation Club in Coal City.

At 11 a.m., a call went out from Legionnaire Jerry Angeloff to the men of Mazon American Legion Post 352, and they snapped to attention.

The crowd that was gathered around the newly built memorial quieted as Karey Costello, co-coordinator of the Ceco memorial, welcomed attendees to the inaugural Memorial Day event held at the memorial honoring Lance Cpl. Steven Hancock, a United States Marine brought home Steven to rest after a training Hancock accident in North Carolina led to his death two years ago.

“Last spring, we decided to build this memorial. The top of the memorial has Ceco members names, and the

red bricks has veterans who are both alive and dead,” Costello said. “It was an idea we had, and we received a lot of tremendous support to build it.”

She said even though the memorial had been discussed for some time, it was the death of Steven Hancock that was the deciding factor to move forward last summer.

Costello worked hand-in-hand with Steven Hancock’s father, Michael, in the creation of the memorial.

“I’m nothing but proud of my husband,” said Sue Hancock, Steven’s mother. “It was his vision.”

Michael Hancock said the project was a labor of love.

During the ceremony, Angeloff read a Memorial Day speech before the American flag was brought down and removed from the flagpole, folded neatly and handed to Richard Friebus, past commander of American Legion Post 118.

Friebus, an Army veteran who fought in Korea, said the event made him want to cry.

“It’s quite an honor to receive the

flag,” he said.

A new, larger flag was unpacked and spread out while Michael and Sue Hancock attached it to the post and hoisted it high above all who

were present.

“Today is not about a picnic for us anymore,” Sue Hancock said of Memorial Day. “Today, we celebrate his life.”

Garden walk to support pediatric hospice Walking my dog recently along the bike path outside Heritage Lake subdivision I noticed two people planting flowers around the “Welcome to Channahon” sign; one happened to be my neighbor, Renee Lake.

I thought it was such a nice thing to do, so I asked if they were doing it out of the goodness of their hearts.

As it turns out, they were.

The village of Channahon provides the plants for all the signs in town, but the Three Rivers Gardening Angels Club plants them as one of its regular projects for everyone to enjoy.

I, for one, really appreciate that they do it.

This is one of several projects the club, now celebrating its 21st year, does on a regular basis.

They also plant and do cleanup around the Channahon Police Department, said garden club member Tina Lentz, who also is a member of the police commission.

They typically have a speaker and a project and sometimes go on field trips.

In June, they will be visiting the Redbud Creek Farm Garden Center in Yorkville and in August they’ll do a walk of members’ gardens.

There are people of all ages who belong to the club, which has about 49 members.

There are always new faces eager to learn from the more experienced gardeners, Lentz said.

“They are a wealth of knowledge; you can’t get that from a book,” she said.

MINOOKA – The tombstone of U.S. Army veteran Carl Bush reads “Family to the lucky. Friend to all.”

That sums up Carl’s life. Although Carl received a Purple Heart during his service in the Korean War, and despite the painful frostbite he endured in his hands and feet, Carl spent his days working to benefit others, especially veterans and youth.

He belonged to numerous veterans organizations: Minooka American Legion Post 1188; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6049 in Morris; VFW Post 3629 in Ketchikan, Alaska; and Marne American Legion Post 13 in Plainfield, where he served as past commander.

“The brotherhood of the veterans made it come full circle for him,” said Daniel Bush of Minooka, Carl’s son.

Carl also was a 32-degree Mason and a 50-year member of Plainfield Masonic Lodge 536 A.F. and A.M. But the focus

values,” Daniel said. “He was able to live his life the way he wanted to – taking care of his wife and his children.

America gave him that opportunity, and he never forgot it.”

Carl’s mother died when he was 11, making him partially responsible for the care of his two younger brothers, Daniel said. To help support them, Carl dropped out of school in 11th grade and joined the U.S. Army the following year.

He met his wife, Barbara Bush – his life partner in everything, including square dancing – at a Springfield skating rink by accident: Carl’s friend wanted to meet Barbara’s friend. Carl had just returned home.

A grenade had gone off when Carl was in a foxhole; fragments remained in his right hand and upper right leg for the rest of his life, Daniel said.

“He was proud of his Purple Heart,” Daniel said. “He actually put it on a necklace and gave it to his wife, who he actually based his life around: his wife of 63 years and his family.”

To Carl, the Boy Scouts of America embodied the American values he held dear. Carl became involved with Troop 82 in Plainfield when his oldest son, Mike Bush, turned 8 and became a Cub Scout, Daniel said. Daniel said he is

an Eagle Scout and so is his brother, David. Carl progressed to scoutmaster and then to campmaster for the Rainbow Council. He received the Silver Beaver Award, as did Barbara, one of the first women – if not the first – to receive it, Daniel said.

In conjunction with scouting, Carl also helped organize and complete a 200-mile Bicentennial Walk in 1976. It began in Springfield and ended at Bicentennial Park in Joliet, Daniel said.

Daniel, at 14, was one of the Boy Scouts who walked it.

For this, Carl received commendation by then-President Gerald Ford, Daniel said.

In retirement, Carl and Barbara volunteered in parks – especially in Alaska and Arizona – for the National Park Service. In 2013, the Minooka Police Department honored them for their volunteer work through the Minooka Citizens Police Academy, Daniel said.

Many scouts attended Carl’s wake, Daniel said, including the 20, mostly adults, who performed a Broken Arrow ceremony in their scouting uniforms.

“They had this red arrow that they broke in half,” Daniel said. “Then they gave a speech about his life and what he did. That is their goodbye.”

Saturday to show sunset, fireballs at Joliet raceway

Route 66 Raceway will host the “Burndown at Sundown” as part of the Lucas Oil Drag Racing series held annually at the track.

“The [oncoming darkness] does make it more of a spectacle,” racetrack spokesman Denny Hartwig said. “It puts an exclamation point on the whole weekend.”

More than 500 race cars, including funny cars and nitro-powered dragsters, will race throughout the weekend.

There also will be fire-breathing and wheel-standing events.

“The addition of jet cars is the enhancement over the typical dragster event,” Hartwig said.

Festivities start at 5 p.m., and the “burndown” is scheduled for about 8:30 p.m. Top Nation Hot Rod Association driver T.J. Zizzo is expected to be available to sign autographs.

There also was a 1947 letter from the Army informing Pvt. Russell’s mother that her son’s remains could not be sent back to the United States.

In January, Kubalewski decided to look for Pvt. Russell’s obituary in old copies of The Herald-News kept by the Joliet Public Library.

He could not find one, but a librarian mentioned that the newspaper during World War II would print front page stories of soldiers who died in battle. He found the article, which noted he was the son of Mrs. Russell at 316 Ruby Street, and that he was born and raised in Joliet.

There was more.

Pvt. Russell had been a special agent for the old Elgin, Joliet and Eastern Railroad. He and his wife, formerly Catherine Heeg and the daughter of then DuPage Township Supervisor Frank Heeg, had moved to Chicago when the railroad transferred him.

Kubalewski cried when he saw Pvt. Russell’s face for the first time in the photograph.

“To actually see him was a great experience,” he said. “I said, ‘So that’s you, George.’ ” The desire to keep alive the memories of soldiers from World War II is strong, said Heather Bigeck, collec-

Munson is remembered as an avid joker and had a wonderful sense of humor. He was a diehard Cubs fan but would watch any Chicago team. He was a member of the Masons for 70 years and became a Master in 1963. He is also a member of American Legion Post 1080.

STATE Election-year politics dim hopes of Ill. budget deal

CHICAGO – The emails started arriving as heads were still spinning in the state Capitol over Democrats ramming through a state budget proposal. The missives from Republicans on Wednesday accused the majority party of approving a plan that’s out of balance by $7 billion.

By the next night, voters were receiving automated “robocalls,” paid for by the GOP, accusing Democrats in key swing districts of siding with House Speaker Michael Madigan to “force record high income tax rates.”

Gov. Bruce Rauner and Democratic leaders may be fighting over how to resolve the nation’s only remaining state budget deadlock, but they’re also keeping a constant eye on the November election, and how each vote and each statement can help them or hurt them come Election Day. Each side is preparing to spend millions as Rauner and other Republicans campaign to weaken the Democrats’ years-long dominance in Bruce the General Assembly. Rauner Republicans paint Democrats as interested only in raising taxes and opposing reforms, while the Democrats accuse the GOP of trying to help the wealthy at the expense of the middle class and vulnerable residents.

The attacks have gone on for months but have intensified in recent weeks with emails, news conferences and TV ads over everything from term limits to the minimum amount workers on state construction projects should earn.

The election-focused politics are a major reason Illinois doesn’t have a state budget nearly 11 months into the fiscal year, and why lawmakers likely aren’t motivated to pass a deal for the next fiscal year, which starts July 1, before lawmakers adjourn their spring session Tuesday.

“Both sides are so focused on partisan politics and the upcoming election that they refuse to do their job,” said Rep. Jack Franks, a Marengo Democrat who often votes with Republicans.

Franks announced earlier this month he’s leaving the Legislature, due largely, he said, to Springfield’s gridlock.

The main players in the fight are Rauner, a multimillionaire businessman who to date has been stymied by Democrats on his promise to “shake

Each is expected to spend millions to attack and promote different candidates in the fall campaign. Rauner already has set aside $20 million for that purpose, and earlier this month gave $5 million to the state GOP. The prize is Democrats’ veto-proof supermajorities. On paper, the party has enough seats to override a Rauner Michael veto in both the Senate Madigan and House. While that group is large enough to consistently do so in the Senate, at least three House Democrats have been known to defect from Madigan’s majority, leading to failed veto overrides or skipped attempts on key issues such as stop-gap funding for child care or union arbitration.

Madigan dispatched one of those outliers, Rep. Ken Dunkin of Chicago, by running a successful opponent against him in the March primary. Now Madigan is looking to pick up a few more seats in November – an outcome that would allow Democrats to ensure legislation either becomes law or doesn’t.

Rauner and the GOP are hoping to not only stop that from happening, but to further deflate Madigan’s numbers.

Republicans say there are as many as 24 House seats where they plan to compete, although their fiercest battles will likely be in about a half-dozen districts scattered throughout Illinois.

While Rauner has recently talked up the need for compromise, he struck a more combative tone at this month’s state GOP convention, promising “the biggest ground game that’s ever been done in legislative races in Illinois history” while blaming Democrats for running Illinois “into the ground.”

Woman fleeing robbery in Chicago hit by truck, dies

CHICAGO – A Chicago woman who was fleeing from an armed robbery with her boyfriend has died after being hit by a truck on Lake Shore Drive.

Chicago Police Officer Laura Amezaga said a 32-year-old woman and a 43-year-old man were approached by a group of males in the Gold Coast neighborhood early Sunday morning.

The group announced a robbery and one of the men had a handgun.

The woman and her boyfriend tried to run away. Both were hit by a pickup truck in the southbound lanes of Lake Shore Drive. Amezaga said the woman was pronounced dead at a hospital, and the man is in stable condition.

No one is in custody, and authorities are investigating. The incident happened a few blocks east of the city’s Magnificent Mile shopping area.

Sheriff: Illinois trio visits Florida to rob a bank

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Most tourists visit Florida for the theme parks and beaches. Lee County sheriff’s deputies said an Illinois trio came to Fort Myers to rob a bank. The News-Press reported that 52-year-old Paul Paynter, 43-year-old Bret Strusiner, both of Chicago, and 43-yearold Karen Bajoras of Des Plaines robbed a Fifth Third Bank on Saturday. They were arrested later Saturday on robbery charges. Paynter and Strusiner were being held Sunday on $500,000 bond each, while Bajoras was being held on $250,000 bond. No attorneys were listed on the trio’s jail records.

Garland gives address at high school graduation

CHICAGO – Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland delivered the commencement speech Sunday at the Chicago-area high school where he graduated as valedictorian 46 years ago, although he didn’t address the partisan divide over his nomination.

The U.S. appeals court judge in Washington, D.C., instead used his 15-minute address to the Niles West High School graduating class to touch on common commencement themes such as life’s

unexpected “twists and turns.” He also urged graduates to consider going into public service.

“Not one of us did anything by ourselves to deserve [our] initially luck [in life],” he said at the outdoor ceremony. “So, pay it back. Devote some part of your life to public service.”

President Barack Obama nominated Garland on March 16 to fill the late Antonin Scalia’s Merrick seat. But Republicans in Garland Congress have vowed not to hold hearings or a confirmation vote until a new president takes office.

In introducing his nominee in March, Obama mentioned Garland’s valedictory speech at Niles West in 1970. After some parents pulled a sound-system plug on another student speaker who denounced the Vietnam War, Garland set aside his prepared remarks to talk about freespeech rights, Obama said.

Chicago, company to turn wastewater into fertilizer

CHICAGO – A private Canadian company plans to use some of the phosphorus from the wastewater produced by the Chicago area’s massive sewage treatment plant and turn it into slow-release fertilizer.

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District, which operates the area’s Stickney Water Reclamation Plant, has agreed to finance the $31 million project

by Ostara Nutrient Recovery Technologies, the Chicago Tribune reported. But it still faces court challenges from environmental groups that want more stringent legal limits on the district’s phosphorus releases into local waterways.

“Usually utilities don’t do anything until the courts or the permit writers tell us what to do,” said David St. Pierre, the district’s executive director. “I don’t think legal battles should paralyze us or prevent us from continuing to improve.”

The project would divert wastewater through three reactors that use catalysts to form tiny, nutrient-rich “pearls” for the fertilizer industry. The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District estimates the equipment would produce up to 10,000 tons annually, reduce the Stickney plant’s phosphorus discharges by about 30 percent and eventually generate $2 million annually through a licensing agreement with the Vancouver, British Columbia-based company.

Zachariah Fike, of the Vermont-based Purple Hearts Reunited, began the project after noticing exactly 100 Purple Hearts or equivalent lithographs in his collection of memorabilia, awarded for injuries or deaths from the Great War. “You’re honoring fallen heroes,” said Fike, a Vermont National Guard captain wounded in Afghanistan in 2010. “These are our forefathers; these are the guys that have shed their blood or sacrificed their lives for us. Any opportunity to bring light to that is always a good thing.”

Rookie Rossi wins 100th Indianapolis 500 in most improbable fashion

Shaw Media correspondent SPEEDWAY, Ind. – So here’s the script.

You take a 24-year-old rookie who watched last year’s Indianapolis 500 on television in Monaco. You put him in a car that’s low on fuel at the end of the 100th 500 and tell him to save fuel over the last 36 laps while a teammate creates a draft to nurse him around the 2.5mile oval. Then you cross your fingers that the strategy – desperation or designed – works for those final 90 miles.

Hollywood types would throw writers out of the office for proposing such unlikely novelty. But in front of

some 350,000 sweltering spectators and ahead of 32 other drivers, Rossi moved to the lead with four laps remaining and stayed there, beating Andretti Autosport teammate Carlos Munoz to the finish line by 4.4975 seconds. Josef Newgarden was third.

“I have no idea how we pulled this off,” Rossi said in a jubilant victory lane ceremony. “Bryan (Herta) came up with an unbelievable strategy, and Ryan (Hunter-Reay) was giving me a tow.”

Herta, a former driver who won with Dan Wheldon in 2011 and partnered with Andretti when his team’s

finances faltered over the winter, rolled the dice and won where others, Munoz included, did not. The necessity to gamble was caused by the last caution period ending with 34 laps to go.

IndyCars normally last from 29 to 32 laps on a single tank under green-flag conditions.

In the last nine laps, challengers Tony Kanaan, Helio Castroneves (the last 500 rookie to win) and Sebastian Bourdais ducked into the pits for fuel.

The other usual suspects still running already had done so.

Chaves’ day was more interesting than he would have liked. He and Alex Tagliani touched going into one of the first turns after the green flag.

Later, Chaves and Daly nearly collided after leaving their pits which were about 40 feet apart, and he had a pair of drive-through penalties as well.

“We had a car to put us in the top six or seven,” Chaves said.

Clauson was just happy to finish before scooting off to the Kokomo Klassic.

“I struggled in the big packs,” Clausen said. “In the small packs we were OK. I’m just happy to get to the end of one.”

Shaw Media correspondent SPEEDWAY, Ind. – It would have been a more stunning finish than Alexander Rossi’s triumph.

Driving for Plainfield-based Dale Coyne Racing, Pippa Mann was employing the same fuel-strategy gambit that Rossi was.

The only problem for Mann was, this was Pippa Mann the Indianapolis 500, not the Indianapolis 485.

With much of the field ahead of her pitting, Mann moved from 18th on lap 169 to eighth with five laps to go.

But she had pitted on lap 164, and 32 laps was her limit. So in she came, on fumes, for a stop of about 9.6 seconds.

Had Mann’s next-to-last stop come a few laps later, she would have had a great chance to finish second, which would have bettered Coyne’s best finish in an Indianapolis 500 by two spots.

Instead, she ended up 18th, and the first driver a lap down. As it turns out, that’s her best finish in a 500, and the best finish of Coyne’s four drivers in the 100th renewal of the 500.

Gabby Chaves finished 20th after running as high as 11th with 41 laps

remaining, Bryan Clauson was 23rd, and Conor Daly ended up 29th after a spin and collision with Mikhail Aleshin after he smacked the South Chute wall on the 115th lap.

On lap 195, Newgarden pitted, and Rossi was just behind Munoz. On the next circuit, in came Munoz, who could wait no longer.

“I knew I didn’t have enough fuel,” Munoz said. “I don’t know how my teammate did it without stopping. If I’m honest, I want to know what he did.”

Newgarden, who drives for Ed Carpenter, was left scratching his head.

“It’s hard not to say the wrong thing,” Newgarden said. “I’m not going to think about it. Everyone was on different strategies. They played the fuel strategy. It would have been silly for us to do that. I don’t think they were quite as strong as us today.”

Rossi moved in front, his last pit stop on the 164th lap, which might as well have been on Saturday. And that final mile of the 500 might as well have taken forever.

“It was sputtering out of (Turn) 4,” Rossi said. “I pulled the clutch to make

By the time Rossi rolled under the twin checkered flags and over the yard of bricks, he wasn’t going more than 80 mph. His final lap average speed was 179.784 mph, the speed of race laps 45

years ago. But he led Munoz by 13.42 seconds on the penultimate lap and was able to coast home to a most improbable victory.

Rossi hadn’t run on an oval track until Phoenix this year. He hadn’t been to the Indianapolis Motor Speed-

Not that you could tell on Sunday.

He ran a veteran’s race, a fuel-saving strategy all day, and it worked.

“I need to see a psychiatrist,” Rossi said. “It was just patience. Bryan kept reminding me we were gonna win this race on a fuel number. So I didn’t have to worry about balance issues.”

Yet his car was strong from stint to stint.

“The first thought I could win? Probably lap 5. I had a conservative start, but then I was lapping cars – and big cars.”

The first of which was Scott Dixon.

Rossi led twice for a total of 10 laps about 300 miles in, when he and Alex Tagliani were trading the lead. That back-and-forth was the theme most of the day, whether it was pole-sitter James Hinchcliffe and Hunter-Reay, or Munoz and Sage Karam, or Hunter-Reay and Townsend Bell.

In the end, it came down to an old racer advising the new kid to save fuel and not let anyone pass him. An impossible task, and he did it.

You can’t make up stuff like this.

VIEWS Dick Goss championship and by anyone’s standards is among the best teams in the state, will face Plainfield Central at 5 p.m. at Oswego. Plainfield East will battle the outsider, Neuqua Valley, at approximately 7 p.m. in the second game of the doubleheader.

Meanwhile, after much discussion about date and venue, Minooka and Plainfield South will square off at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at North Central College in a Bloomington Sectional semifinal. The championship game Saturday will be played at Illinois Wesleyan University, with Belleville West or O’Fallon the opponent for the SPC survivor.

What this all means is we know we will have at least two and possibly three SPC teams vying for sectional titles Saturday. The conference Joliet Central and Joliet West are joining next school year is bound to gain at least some of the respect it has been lacking. The accomplishments of the SPC play into a bigger picture, which is how well the Joliet area in general performed during regional week.

Two-time defending 4A state champion Providence won the Lockport Regional title, but not before being challenged by the Porters. Lincoln-Way East upset Sandburg in that regional final and will be the Celtics’ opponent in the 3 p.m. Thursday sectional semifinal at Providence.

If Saturday’s 17-0 victory over Coal City in the Joliet Catholic Regional final is any indication, Lemont will be a difficult out in Class 3A. The Indians will face Morgan Park at 4:30 p.m.

Wednesday at Lincoln-Way West.

On the 2A level, Reed-Custer has reached the 7 p.m. Monday supersectional against DePaul College Prep at Benedictine University in Lisle. If the Comets win, they will play this weekend in the 2A state tournament at Dozer Park in Peoria, home of the Peoria Chiefs.

Several area teams that did not win regionals in the larger classes made impressive showings nonetheless.

Bolingbrook and Romeoville, for instance, were right in the mix in a Bolingbrook Regional where both semifinals and the championship game featured one-run decisions.

Joliet West reached the championship game at Bradley before falling to Plainfield South.

The Coal City-Joliet Catholic re-

gional semifinal in 3A – Brad Littleton versus Drake Fellows – was one of those classic 1-0 games. And the only reason Lincoln-Way West is not playing in its sectional is Herscher rallied for five runs in the seventh inning to pull out a 7-6 victory in the Morris Regional final. After what happened in Kansas City this weekend, White Sox fans can relate.

Herald-News correspondent Drake Skleba did some research and determined Joliet area teams were 19-6 last week against outside-the-area competition, including a sterling 12-2 in Class 4A. A large part of that, of course, comes compliments of the four Plainfields and Minooka.

Plainfield North and Minooka are established as teams that can and will regularly compete on the state level.

Plainfield South, under coach Phil Bodine, has enjoyed some postseason success as well.

But for the SPC as a whole to build this sort of postseason resume – for coach John Rosner and Plainfield Central, and coach Adam O’Reel and Plainfield East, to be included – is huge for an area that prides itself on the quality of its baseball.

Windy City sweeps Slammers on dramatic homer in bottom of the 9th STAFF, SUBMITTED REPORTS CRESTWOOD – Johnny Elerman belted a two-run home run off reliever Kevin Simmons with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning Sunday afternoon to give the Windy City Thunderbolts a 6-5 victory over the Joliet Slammers and a sweep of their three-game weekend series at Standard Bank Stadium.

The Slammers (7-9) had taken a 5-4 lead with two runs in the top of the ninth as Melvin Rodriguez drew a bases-loaded walk and Joe Staley knocked in the go-ahead run with a groundout.

Marc Flores had three hits and two RBIs and Carter Bell added two hits for Joliet, which battled back from a 3-0 first-inning deficit.

The Thunderbolts (12-3) had beaten the Slammers, 8-7, in a wild 13-inning series opener Friday night and hit a season-high four home runs Saturday night in a 7-1 victory.

Joliet scored four runs Friday in the ninth inning to take a 6-5 lead, but Windy City pushed across a run in the bottom of the inning to tie.

The international tiebreaker,

where each half-inning begins with a runner on second base, went into effect in the 11th inning, and in the 13th, the Slammers scored when Staley hit into a fielder’s choice for an 8-7 lead.

However, the Thunderbolts scored twice against reliever Kevin McNorton in the bottom of the inning to win.

Bell had three hits while Charlie White and Phil Bates chipped in two apiece for the Slammers. Staley and Boo Vasquez drove in two runs.

On Saturday, Windy City’s Jake Fisher held the Slammers scoreless through eight innings. Joliet’s only run came on Staley’s ninth-inning homer. Staley also had tripled in the second but was thrown out at the plate on a groundball. Vasquez reached base in all four plate appearances with two hits and two walks.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD Lewis claims ninth: Spurred by three

All-America finishes, No. 13 Lewis finished ninth overall at the 2016 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. It marks the second top-10 finish by the Flyers this

season as they placed fourth overall at the NCAA Indoor Championships earlier.

Amanda Farrough placed second n the 5,000 with a time of 16:35.58, the fourth All-America award of Farrough’s career. Chantel Stennis (Bolingbrook) ended her career with her seventh and eighth All-America awards with sixth-place finishes in the 200 (23.96) and 400 (53.67). Her time in the 400 is a school record.

USF takes 13th: Five Saints earned a place on the All-America awards stand as St. Francis produced its highest-ever finish at the NAIA Outdoor National Championships in Gulf Shores, Alabama with a 13th-place showing.

Jenna Moody (Plainfield Central) finished fourth in the 400 with a time of 55.14 seconds. She then combined with Isi Edeko, LaToyah Mason and Daryll Rodriguez for fifth in the 4x400 relay (3:48.70).

MEN’S TRACK & FIELD Lewis tied for 19th: Lewis was tied

for 19th after Day 2 of the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Isaac Jean-Paul collected

his fifth All-America finish as a Flyer with a fifth-place high jump of 6-113/4.

Michael Leet earned an All-America award after finishing seventh in the 3,000 steeplechase (9:00.71). Bryce Holesinger finished 13th in the decathlon with 6,663 points and Sergio Miranda (Romeoville) was 10th in the 800 preliminary run (1:52.06).

USF 32nd: Five Saints garnered All-America acclaim as St. Francis finished 32nd at the NAIA Outdoor National Championships in Gulf Shores, Alabama. USF’s 4x400 relay of Brandon Ruffin, Michael Giovannelli, John Principato (Plainfield Central) and Tevin Hopkins (Minooka) were fourth in 3:12.40. Cam Knudsen (Minooka) claimed All-America honors in the 1,500 (3:55.41) as he finished fifth.

After placing 10th in the discus earlier, Kyle Mitchell (Plainfield Central) was 10th in the shot (15.98 meters).

In the 5,000, Brian Blaylock finished 12th in 15:12.70. Stephen Wilder (Plainfield North) was 36th in the marathon (3:08:55). Kevin Hardin (Plainfield South, 3:12:05) and Billy Klebenow (Plainfield South, 3:23:18) finished 39th and 45th.

John Darlington and Jeff Petrovic are more than coaches of highly successful high school baseball programs.

They are friends who respect each other’s accomplishments.

So after Darlington’s Plainfield North team and Petrovic’s Minooka club had wrapped up their Class 4A regional championships Saturday, the coaches exchanged text messages, not only to offer congratulations, but to revel in how well the Southwest Prairie Conference had performed.

“I hadn’t had a chance to look at the other scores yet when John first texted me,” Petrovic said when we talked late Saturday afternoon. “He told me the news that all four Plainfield schools won their regionals.

“How about five teams from our conference winning regionals (only the Chicago Catholic Blue has more regional champs). For the longest time, people did not give our conference a lot of credit. Darlington and I recognized that right away. It’s nice to see other teams in our conference have that chance now to show how good of baseball we play.”

The SPC will be in the spotlight Wednesday in sectional semifinals at two locations. Plainfield North, which ran away with the SPC regular-season

Zobrist, Montero homer, Lackey sharp as Cubs sweep Phillies

CHICAGO – Ben Zobrist hit a threerun homer, John Lackey pitched seven solid innings and the Chicago Cubs completed a sweep of the Philadelphia Phillies with a 7-2 victory Sunday.

Miguel Montero added a solo homer and drove in two runs as the Cubs (34-14) won their fifth straight and became the first team this season to get to 20 games over .500.

Zobrist’s two-out drive to right off Vince Velasquez (5-2) made it 5-0 in the third. It extended Zobrist’s hitting streak to 15 games and put the Cubs on the way to their sixth series sweep.

Tyler Goeddel’s solo homer in the seventh was the lone blemish for Lackey (5-2), who gave up four hits and struck out six in his sixth straight quality start.

Velasquez allowed seven runs and nine hits in 42/3 innings in the Phillies’ first sweep at Wrigley Field since 1995.

The Phillies, second-to-last in the majors in runs and homered, shook up their lineup.

A miserable weekend for the Phillies included the end of Freddy Galvis’ 44-game streak without an error at shortstop. He booted Jason Heyward’s grounder in the fifth. Heyward scored

on Kris Bryant’s single and Velasquez was lifted after Montero’s RBI single three batters later made it 7-0.

Montero also hit a leadoff drive in the second for his first homer since opening day. Velasquez has allowed five homers in his last two starts.

The Phillies have dropped seven of nine and were swept for the first time since their season-opening series against Cincinnati.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Cheslor Cuthbert drove in the go-ahead run with an infield hit in a three-run eighth inning, and the Kansas City Royals rallied for the third straight game in a 5-4 win over the White Sox on Sunday.

The Sox wasted a 4-2 lead in the eighth after failing to protect a 5-2 seventh-inning advantage on Friday and a 7-1 ninth-inning margin on Saturday.

Sox relievers allowed 17 runs, 15 hits and eight walks over 61/3 innings in the three-game series, and the Sox have lost 14 of their last 18 games after a 2310 start.

Seeking to become the major leagues’ first 10-game winner, Chris Sale left with a 4-2 lead after seven innings. Lorenzo Cain homered with one out off Nate Jones (2-1), Eric Hosmer doubled, and Kansas City loaded the bases with Kendrys Morales’ walk and Paulo Orlando’s single.

Jones walked Brett Eibner on a low, outside pitch, forcing in the tying run. Matt Albers relieved and Cuthbert hit a grounder that second baseman Brett Lawrie snagged with a dive

FORT WORTH, Texas – Jordan Spieth found the perfect cure for his Masters misery.

With an impressive back nine at Colonial, Spieth won at home in Texas for the first time on the PGA Tour. He had three consecutive birdies after making the turn, and three more in a row to finish his 5-under 65 on Sunday, including a chipin birdie from behind the 17th green after a fortunate bounce off a marshal.

“In our third tournament back, to come back and close this one out the way we did is really, really special,” Spieth said. “This day is a moment that’ll go down, no matter what happens in the next 30 years of my career, this will be one of the most important days that I’ve ever had.”

The second-ranked Spieth punctuated his eighth career victory with a 34-foot birdie putt when he needed only a bogey to win the Dean & Deluca Invitational. At 17-under 263, Spieth finished three strokes ahead of Harris English (66).

CONCORD, N.C. – Martin Truex Jr. led a Sprint Cup-record 588 of 600 miles to win the Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday night, racing away from his bad-luck past at NASCAR’s longest race.

Truex Jr. started from the pole, moved quickly out front and led all but eight of 400 laps for his first win in 34 events since June 2015 at Pocono Raceway.

Truex ran strong enough the past year to grab a bunch more checkered flags, but something always went awry. He led 141 laps at Texas, yet got strung up by poor pit strategy and finished sixth. In Kansas this month, he was out front for 172 laps until a loose wheel knocked him back to 14th. A year ago here, Truex led the most laps at 131, but fell to fifth when he pitted for fuel late and four cars, including winner Carl Edwards, stayed out.

Truex never let it get to him.

“I had confidence. I had faith,” Truex said.

There were no black cats or cracked mirrors this time, just a dominating, prime-time show

by Truex to cap racing’s biggest day.

Kevin Harvick was second, followed by Jimmie Johnson, Denny Hamlin, Brad Keselowski and Kurt Busch.

Truex took the surprise out of this one early and was barely touched by the field. He was passed by Johnson on a restart 55 laps from the end, but Truex went back in front a lap later and was not pushed again.

He bettered Jim Paschal’s mark of leading 335 laps to win at Charlotte in 1967. Truex’s single-car Furniture Row Racing team outclassed the armada of multi-car Sprint Cup powerhouses.

“A lot of emotion right now, not real sure it’s sunk in yet,” Truex said. “Real amazing weekend, the kind you dream about.”

Four-time Coca-Cola 600 winner Johnson was on Truex’s door a handful of times on restarts, then would fade back. Harvick, who won here in 2011 and 2013, was the best of rest as he got by Johnson 44 laps from the end – yet never made a serious run at the top.

HPV vaccine good for boys, girls This column is an update of one that ran originally in May 2013.

Dear Dr. K: A friend says my young son should get the vaccine that protects girls against cervical cancer. That doesn’t seem to make sense. Can you explain?

Dear Reader: Your friend is right, and here’s why. The vaccine is against a virus called human papilloma virus (HPV).

There are more than 100 strains of HPV; about 40 of these strains can be transmitted by sexual contact. So-called low-risk strains cause genital warts. High-risk strains can cause cancers of the cervix, anus, penis and throat. I’ll call these the HPV-related cancers. Not all of these cancers are caused only by HPV, but the virus is an important cause of each. Most cases of cervical cancer in women in the United States are caused by HPV. In other words, HPV can cause cancers in men and can be passed by men to women through sex. So giving the vaccine to boys protects them when they become men, and protects women with whom they may have sex.

HPV is very common. Most sexually active adults become infected with HPV before the age of 50 – and most of them don’t know they have it. It doesn’t cause symptoms in most people. However, infected adults still can transmit HPV to their sexual partners regardless of symptoms. Safe sexual practices such as using condoms can reduce the risk of infection.

Fortunately, many people with HPV infection never develop cancer from it.

However, it can be given to boys as young as 9 or to men as old as 26. It is particularly important in teenage or young adult males who have sex with other men.

The Gardasil vaccine (also known as HPV4) was approved for boys in the United States in 2009. The vaccine protects against two low-risk strains of HPV and two high-risk strains. These four strains of HPV are responsible for most cases of genital warts and HPV-related cancers.

The Gardasil 9 vaccine covers five additional strains of the virus.

Even though the vaccine has been shown to benefit boys later in life, and to benefit those with whom they have sex, not all health insurance companies pay for the vaccine. Don’t ask me why; ask them.

Just as giving boys the vaccine also benefits the people with whom they have sex later in life, the same logic applies to girls: The vaccine not only protects them, but also their sexual partners later in life.

Even with a vaccine, men and women also should remember to prevent HPV the old-fashioned way: by practicing safe sex.

reading some of your columns concerning abusive, controlling relationships, I realize I am in one, but not in the way you assume. I am the abuser. My boyfriend and I have been together for a year and a half. Most of the time it’s great – we have similar interests, and we’re both not afraid to speak our minds, which makes our playful debates fun. Our downfall, which has caused two breakups, is my temper.

I have an explosive, flash temper. When he does something I dislike, such as hang out with a female friend, stay out late drinking, talk about things I find annoying or insensitive, I go on a rampage. I say heartless things, threaten to leave him and do everything in my power to make him feel guilty.

As soon as I get a few minutes to gather my thoughts and cool down, I realize how out of control I have become, and I profusely attempt to apologize and make up for it. But the damage already is done.

I have concluded I am a major part of the problem, and I am desperately trying to change my ways.

I love him, I truly do. Recently he has told me he wants to help me work on my temper and emotional issues in the hope of strengthening our relationship and becoming more serious. At the bridge table, you hope that the price you pay to cash a winner is not so high that it costs your contract. Similarly, it can be frustrating to have the winners you need but be unable to cash them.

How should South set about cashing in on his four-spade contract after West leads the club queen?

In the auction, South’s threespade rebid was invitational, showing at least a six-card suit and about 11 points. North, with two trumps and fair values, took a shot at game (although passing wouldn’t have been outrageous).

Declarer must start by counting his losers and winners. He has four potential losers: three hearts and one diamond. However, he has 10 apparent winners: six spades, two diamonds (once the ace has been dislodged) and two clubs. So, South can get home as long as he does not concede those four tricks.

Declarer needs to see that if he immediately draws trumps, he risks going down. If West, when in with his diamond ace, shifts to hearts, the defenders will get those four tricks.

Also, if South tries to ruff a heart on the board, the defenders will play trumps.

Instead, declarer should drive out the diamond ace before drawing trumps. If West is tough, he will duck the first diamond, win the second, and play another club. Then, South must hope that the diamonds are breaking 3-3.
