Park board revises Pilcher Park plan

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet Park District board on Monday approved a Pilcher Park plan that basically leaves the road and trail layout as is but makes it more drivable and walkable. The new plan was well received by disability advocates, who opposed a previous plan that would close a road.

Residents of the Pilcher Park area also commended the park district for an apparent commitment to better maintenance of the park.

Park officials said the key to the success of the new plan is better maintenance of the park and more communication with the people who use it.

“We’re not going to wait another 10 or 15 years and meet again,” new Executive Director Tom Carstens said. “We’re going to meet on an ongoing basis and keep this park going where it needs to go.”

The park district in February had planned to go out for bids on a plan that

will be financed from bonds approved in a 2014 referendum.

The new plan includes among other things:

• Repaving North Loop Road; • Resurfacing the middle connector of Loop Trail with crushed asphalt topped with crushed limestone; • Repaving Upper Pilcher Trail from Route 6 to a spot near the Nature Center; • Resurfacing the Upper Pilcher Trail Loop with crushed asphalt topped with crushed limestone.

Board President Glen Marcum said the new trail surface will be harder and should be more accessible for wheelchairs. The park district has bought one wheelchair designed for use on trails, and Marcum said more could be purchased later.

Both park officials and residents talked about a brighter future for Pilcher Park.

“I really like the direction we’re going now,” park neighbor Earley Coleman said.

“We’ve all come together.”

D-202 board OKs standardized testing schedule

fsarver@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield School District 202 board approved a proposal from administrators to reinstate a standardized testing schedule for high school students next school year.

The testing schedule proposed is meant to provide an annual benchmark of students’ college and career preparation, as well as a testing environment that gives them “the best chance of demonstrating their full potential,” according to the proposal submitted by Dan McDonnell, a curriculum director.

like to reinstate a standardizing testing schedule based on recent decisions by the Illinois State Board of Education regarding the SAT. Under the schedule for Oct. 19, freshman, sophomore and junior students would complete their testing and be dismissed but seniors would not be in attendance. Glenn Wood, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, said Monday that Oct. 19 would be a college visit day for seniors. For the spring, because of the importance of junior students’ exams, administrators proposed that freshman, sophomore and senior students not be in attendance during spring SAT testing. District officials proposed to continue not funding SAT unless the state provides funding for it, according to the proposal. This was the procedure during the current school year.

would have closed off the North Loop Road and closed a middle connector of the Loop Trail because of flooding issues.

But the park board put the bids on hold amid ongoing concerns raised by disability advocates, especially the Will-Grundy Center for Independent Living. The primary issue was that the loss of the North Loop Road would make the park less accessible to people with disabilities.

The board in March held a public hearing on the project at Pilcher Park. More than 100 people attended the meeting with many speaking against the plan, although some said less access could prevent some of the dumping that occurs at the park.

“I’m so pleased that the board listened to the concerns of the community and really did the right thing,” Pam Heavens, executive director for the Will-Grundy Center for Independent Living, said after the Monday meeting.

The new plan raises the cost of the project from the original budget of $2.2 million to a new budget of $2.4 million. The project

WILLIAM HENNESSY HONORED 1930s mayor started three generations of civic leadership

bokon@shawnmedia.com JOLIET – The Hennessy family has been involved in Joliet city government in some fashion since 1898.

The man who started it was recognized Monday at a ceremony in which the honorary name William A. Hennessy Way was added to a section of Jackson Street starting at the downtown drawbridge that opened when he was mayor.

“I’m very emotional William even though I didn’t get Hennessy to meet him,” said Karen Ward, great-granddaughter of Hennessy and the person who pushed for the honorary street name. “I just heard so much about all he did for the city and the county.”

Hennessy was mayor from 1931 to 1935.

Two of the remarkable events during his term were the openings of the Jefferson Street and Jackson Street drawbridges that are still downtown today.

Hennessy had a 37-year career as an employee or elected official with the city. He started as a police officer in 1898 and became police chief. He also was a city commissioner, heading the Department of Public Health and Safety.

He had a son and grandson who followed in his footsteps.

His son, James Hennessy, was a twoterm mayor from 1955 to 1963, when the interstate system was being developed.

He also was instrumental in the formation of the Joliet Regional Port District, which now oversees Lewis University Airport in Romeoville.

Ed Hennessy, James’ son, is chairman of the Joliet Zoning Board of Appeals, a board on which he has served for 38 years. He also is a former city

D-210 requested for federal grand jury Assistant U.S. attorney files subpoena for information on former superintendent

fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – At least one Lincoln-Way School District 210 representative was commanded to testify last week before a federal grand jury on information regarding former Superintendent Lawrence Wyllie, among other documents.

A copy of the May 4 subpoena from the U.S. District Court in Chicago was sent to the media Monday afternoon

by Taryn Atwell, the school district’s community relations director. She wrote that Freedom of Information Act requests for the subpoena were recently submitted.

“District officials and board members have been advised not to comment on any items pertaining to this investigation,” she stated in an email.

They were commanded to bring any and all documents and records from Jan. 1, 2000, to the present regarding Wyllie.

Some of that information included his salary, compensation, contracts, loans, bonuses, travel requests, personnel files, reimbursement records, credit cards and emergency funds.

Also requested was information on board policies and procedures; board

meeting memorandums, minutes, details and recordings; and all records related to misappropriation of federal, state and local funds to include bond funds, restricted funds and student activity funds.

The subpoena also requested any and all records related to the district’s participation in the Universal Services Fund contracts, letters of agency for consultants, consultant compensation and other related items.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Fitzpatrick declined to comment Monday about the subpoena.

When asked whether Lincoln-Way was being investigated by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, he said his office does not confirm or deny the existence of an investigation.

Since late December, Lincoln-Way has been the site of controversy over a lawsuit filed by residents to prevent

the closing of North high school and the district’s past financial practices, including those of Wyllie, who retired in 2013 after serving as superintendent for 24 years.

The board acknowledged in April – after a critical report from Crowe Horwath on bond proceeds from a referendum to construct North and West – that a proper system of checks and balances was not in place and Wyllie took unauthorized action.

A report from two complainants alleging financial fraud against Lincoln-Way was sent to the Will County Sheriff’s Office in either late March or early April, but the report was turned over to another agency.

Kathy Hoffmeyer, sheriff’s office spokeswoman, declined to specify which agency in April. A call to her made Monday afternoon was not immediately returned.

Inmate: Peterson admitted to killing missing wife The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHESTER – A prison inmate Drew Peterson is accused of enlisting to arrange the killing of the Will County state’s attorney says the imprisoned former suburban Chicago police officer also admitted to killing his missing fourth wife.

Antonio Smith testified Monday that the ex-Bolingbrook sergeant convicted in 2012 of killing his third wife referred to Stacy Peterson as a “dead woman” Drew and said he killed her, Peterson the Chicago Tribune reported. Peterson also asked for help hiring a hit man to kill Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow, who put Peterson behind bars, Smith testified.

Peterson, 62, has never been charged in Stacy Peterson’s disappearance and has maintained his innocence.

He’s serving a 38-year sentence in the 2004 death of his ex-wife Kathleen Savio in a case that was reopened after Stacy Peterson went missing in 2007.

Jeremy Walker told jurors on the first day of Peterson’s murder-for-hire trial that the defendant was motivated by “anger, hatred [and] revenge” against Glasgow, as well as the belief that the prosecutor’s death would lead to a successful appeal of his first-degree murder conviction, which is under review by the Illinois Supreme Court.

Smith – whose prison nickname is “Beast” – testified that Peterson said he was owed $10,000 that would be his payment to “the person that was supposed to do the killing,” according to the Tribune.

Smith reported the offer to authorities and agreed to help secretly record Peterson, according to prosecutors.

Those wiretapped conversations are expected to be played in court during

the weeklong trial.

Peterson, who is imprisoned at the Menard Correctional Center in southern Illinois, has pleaded not guilty to charges of solicitation of murder for hire and solicitation of murder related to Glasgow. He faces an additional 60 years in prison if convicted of those charges.

“They’re going to sensationalize the heck out of this thing,” defense attorney Lucas Liefer told the jurors during his opening statement. “Do not give in to this approach.”

Peterson’s animus toward Glasgow – whom Walker said Peterson wanted killed on the elected prosecutor’s way to or from his Joliet office – extended beyond Glasgow’s role in helping put him behind bars, according to testimo-

ny and evidence presented.

On the recordings, Peterson blames Glasgow for efforts to revoke Peterson’s $79,000 annual police pension, prosecutors say. He also says Glasgow is the reason that Peterson’s son, Stephen, lost his job at the Oak Brook Police Department over what authorities said were the younger Peterson’s efforts to obstruct the investigation into Savio’s death.

After Peterson’s conviction, Glasgow called him a “coward” and a “thug” who would “threaten people because he had a gun and a badge.”

Glasgow testified that he listened to about 15 minutes of the Peterson wiretap.

Walker said Smith, the prison informant, didn’t receive a reduced sentence for his cooperation but was paid $3,200 by the FBI to replace property lost after he was transferred to the federal prison system following his involvement with Peterson.

LOCAL BRIEFS Motorcyclist hits median, injured on I-55 near Coal City

COAL CITY – A motorcyclist was transported to a nearby hospital after a crash Monday on Interstate 55 near Coal City.

At 11:57 a.m., a motorcyclist traveling south lost control of the bike and drove into a median just south of the Coal City exit for Route 113, Illinois State Police District 5 Sgt. Scott Angus said.

The driver was taken to Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee with injuries that were not life-threatening, Angus said.

The right lane was closed about 30 minutes while first responders provided medical aid to the injured party.

Volunteers sought to put flags at veterans’ cemetery gravesites

ELWOOD – We’re looking for a few good men and women to decorate veterans’ gravesites with American flags for Memorial Day weekend.

“Flags In” will set about 30,000 flags by the markers for those buried at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery. Volunteers are asked to attend a briefing at 8:30 a.m.

Friday by the bell tower.

Bolingbrook bank robbed BOLINGBROOK – The FBI is seeking the public’s help to identify a man who robbed a Bolingbrook bank Friday.

The holdup occurred when the man came into First Merit Bank, 333 Quadriangle Drive, and pointed a black handgun at a teller, according to the FBI. The robbery was captured on surveillance cameras. The bandit was described as a Hispanic man in his mid-40s with black hair and brown eyes. He is about 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighs 175 pounds.

He was wearing dark sunglasses, a gray and black U.S. Army hooded sweatshirt, jeans and dark shoes.

Anyone with information is asked to call investigators at 312-421-6700.

LOCKPORT – An early morning fire in Lockport Township left seven people displaced, although none were injured in the blaze.

At 2:31 a.m. Monday, first responders with the Lockport Township Fire Protection District were dispatched to a reported fire at a home in the 500 block of Harvard Street in unincorporated Lockport Township, according to a district news release.

Fire companies arrived to find a fire had started on the back exterior of the residence and extended into the home, the news release stated.

A resident noticed the fire and was able to evacuate all seven occupants without injury before firefighters’ arrival, according to the news release. The fire was brought under control in about 45 minutes.

The Red Cross was called to assist the displaced residents.

Homer Township and East Joliet fire agencies assisted at the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Policandriotes on Friday that Henderson’s efforts have been “exceptional.”

On July 14, 2012, Henderson was high on heroin and Vicodin when he dropped a milk bottle that lodged under the brake pedal of his Dodge Durango, according to court records. At County Line Road and Route 126, the Durango slammed into a Nissan Altima occupied by a family of four and pushed into the path of an oncoming motorcycle ridden by Ronald Oswald, 57, of Minooka, who was killed.

The man and two children in the Altima suffered minor injuries while his wife suffered a fractured hip and four broken ribs in the crash.

Oswald was an active member of the Will County ABATE, A Brotherhood Aimed Toward Education, which promotes motorcycle safety and legislation to protect riders.

“The victim here was extraordinary. Mr. Henderson has [since] tried to be as extraordinary as he can with the tools he’s been given,” Alessio Policandriotes said.

Henderson spent two years and three months in jail before being released into drug treatment. His recent completion of treatment required the judge to rule on a defense motion filed two years ago to reconsider her original sentence. Henderson will remain on probation until September 2018.

“He is dedicating his life to keep others away from the dangers of heroin,” Tomczak said.

Diane McClimon, Oswald’s daughter, wrote last week in an email to The Herald-News that she was unhappy with a lighter sentence for someone who “killed [one person] and injured an entire family ... and hasn’t served any prison time.” McClimon could not immediately be reached for comment Monday afternoon.

JOLIET – A judge has ruled a Palos Park man will not serve time in prison for a 2012 Plainfield crash that killed a Minooka man and injured four people.

Andrew W. Henderson, 28, pleaded guilty two years ago to two counts of aggravated driving under the influence and was sentenced

by Judge Carla Alessio Policandriotes to nine Andrew years behind bars – but Henderson Henderson was placed on probation until he completed a residential substance abuse program.

“We have a young man who showed extraordinary circumstance by going above and beyond what he was ordered to do [while on probation],” defense attorney Jeff Tomczak said Monday.

motorcycle struck a semitrailer.

Melvin H. Weidner, 74, was riding on the ramp from Arsenal Road to northbound Interstate 55 in Channahon Township when he struck the

semi, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office.

Illinois State Police District 5 Sgt. Scott Angus said the crash was reported at 6:37 p.m. Angus said Weidner

was not carrying any passengers and was wearing a helmet.

The crash was still being investigated Monday, but no tickets were issued to the truck driver, Angus said.

Prosecutor: Joliet man sexually assaulted joggers on I&M Canal Trail

bstanley@shawmedia.com ROCKDALE – A man authorities allege is a serial rapist is facing a minimum of 60 years in prison after police say he sexually assaulted two women in the last week – one of whom was jogging on the I&M Canal Trail.

Miguel C. Luna, 35, of the 100 block of Union Street in Joliet, also confessed to raping another jogger on the trail in September 2015, according Miguel to police reports.

“He admitted to all C. Luna three rapes. He told investigators women wearing short athletic shorts and provocative clothing arouse him and he was unable to control himself,” Will County Assistant State’s

Attorney John Connor said Monday.

On Sept. 6, a 19-year-old woman was running between Brandon Road and Larkin Avenue when she was tackled from behind by a man who told her he had a knife and threatened to kill her if she looked at him, Connor said. The man led the woman into a wooded area, tied her hands behind her back, stripped her clothing off and had sex with her.

On Wednesday night, Will County Sheriff’s police were sent to Brandon and Channahon roads where a “partially-clothed woman” said she’d met a man in a van for a paid sexual encounter nearby, but when she tried to end it, he sexually assaulted her, Connor said. The victim told police the man had blindfolded her and threatened to kill her before she ran away.

On Saturday, another woman contacted police to say she’d been running

near Camelot Road when a man wearing a mask and medical gloves came up behind her and placed her in a chokehold, Connor said. The woman bit her attacker on his right hand, but he hit her and dragged her behind the Interstate 55 viaduct, where he raped her, Connor said.

“He bound her hands behind her back with her shoelaces,” Connor said.

On Saturday night, detectives “received information” about the May 18 assault that identified Luna and his vehicle and said he’d be in the West Park area, Connor told Judge Bennett Braun on Monday in court. Police found the van and arrested Luna for driving with a suspended license before he was questioned about the sexual assaults.

Connor noted Luna has a bite injury on his hand and gave information about the September rape that had not been

released to the public.

“He expressed relief he was caught and wanted his belongings sold and the money given to the victims,” Connor said. Luna also allegedly said the September rape was his first.

Appearing in court on video from the Will County Jail, Luna sat with his head resting on one hand while Braun read the charges against him. Luna is charged with six counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault, four counts of criminal sexual assault, two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, two counts of aggravated battery, one count of criminal sexual abuse and one count of unlawful restraint.

Connor said Luna faces up to natural life in prison.

According to Connor, Luna was convicted of solicitation of a prostitute in 2011.

She will start in the role July 15, in the midst of a challenging time for the district.

“There’s a lot up in the air right now,” said Lisa Pappas Pappas, who has been the district’s assistant director since 2007.

a $39 million facility. Those requests were shot down and the board has been in talks about whether and how to try again, mulling a push for funds in the April election.

For now, Pappas said, she just wants to keep the library functioning well until a new director is hired.

To that end, the board green-lighted last week a request for proposals for executive search services, according to a district news release. Proposals are due June 2 and special meetings are set for June 4 and June 13 to review the options.

Board President Carl Gilmore could not immediately be reached Monday for comment.

intends to reduce staffing and operational hours as part of a plan to freeze most budget lines, reduce others significantly and cut all programming spending by 50 percent, current director Julie Milavec said.

Milavec will remain district director until mid-July, when she leaves for a similar position at the Downers Grove Public Library.

The Plainfield district’s 2015-16 operating budget is $3.16 million, Milavec said, and in 2016-17 it is anticipated to be $3.05 million.

To cut costs, the district plans to reduce its staff from 42.6 full-time equivalent positions to 41.4 full-time equivalent positions, Milavec said.

Fairmont D-89 superintendent to lead Harvey School District 152

fsarver@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – The Fairmont School District 89 superintendent, who resigned recently, plans to lead a school district in Harvey, a move that follows months of disputes between board members over legal and financial issues.

Superintendent Sonya Whitaker elaborated Friday on her resignation after she announced it at Wednesday’s board meeting. At the time, she declined to comment. Whitaker said she will become superintendent for Harvey School District 152 in July, a decision she described as “perfect timing” because she always planned on moving on to a bigger school district.

When asked whether recent controversies among the Fairmont board played a role in her decision to resign, Whitaker said the board should select a superintendent who aligns with its new vision. She said she didn’t know what the board’s new vision was.

Board President Katie Ulmer said the board does not have a new vision.

“The vision has not changed. We just need someone to make the vision work,” she said.

At last Wednesday’s meeting, Ulmer declined to comment when asked about Whitaker’s tenure at District 89.

While Whitaker will leave behind a school district that has faced a federal lawsuit within the past two years, she is moving to one that also experienced legal conflict after District 152’s superintendent last fall filed a federal complaint against the board and the city of Harvey.

After the District 89 board gained new members and changed leaders following the April 2015 election, board Vice President Joseph Ryan has argued with other members – mostly Ulmer – over use of attorneys, legal billings, district credit cards and board procedures. This year Dotson filed Freedom of Information Act requests with the district, some of which involved Whitaker.

Ryan has alleged Ulmer and Dotson have tried to get rid of Whitaker, which they both denied. Dotson has said the new board is trying to correct appar-

ent mistakes of the previous board, which she said did not hold Whitaker accountable. She has declined to give examples.

Ryan also has alleged the board committed Open Meetings Act violations in a request for review sent to the Illinois Attorney General’s Office, but he withdrew it to prevent further legal costs, which have been a source of his criticism as well.

Even before the board changed, Whitaker said she always thought about moving on to a bigger district.

Fairmont has one building with 335 students, and Harvey has seven buildings with 2,266 students, according to the Illinois Report Card.

Whitaker said she plans to help with the transition before she departs June 17 so she can leave the district in better shape than what she inherited.

Since Whitaker became the District 89 superintendent in 2010, the district has improved its finances, rising to the state financial recognition rating three times in a row. She also introduced new initiatives to improve education and strengthen community ties.

The new superintendent will be Pamela Kibbons, who will replace D.J. Skogsberg.

He said he has decided to return to Orland School District 135 to be its superintendent.

The meet-and-greet event will be between Pamela 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday Kibbons at Taft School District 90, 1605 S. Washington St. in Lockport.

This year, the school district went to referendum to increase taxes to help offset a decline in overall assessed property values. The referendum was defeated by a vote of 463 to 394.

Because of its declining finances, district officials developed a deficit reduction plan as required by the Illinois State Board of Education and cut seven staff positions.

Ward’s grandfather, John Maloney, ran a downtown clothing store with William Hennessy. Maloney also was a state legislator.

Given William Hennessy’s place in Joliet history, it is curious that nothing had been done before.

“Karen had the idea for doing this street. We should have done it a long time ago,” Joliet Community Development Director James Haller said at the ceremony. “It’s people like the Hennessys that the city relies on to progress into the future.”

“Granddad didn’t know what he was starting,” Ed Hennessy said, while mentioning other family connections in the region’s history. “My other grandfather [Ed Stubblefield] was warden at Stateville and the old Joliet prison. In those days, you were warden of both of them.”

Ed Hennessy was only 7 when William Hennessy died, and he remembers his grandfather’s fondness for O’Henry bars.

Likewise, Mary Williams of Plainfield, another grandchild, has personal memories of the civic leader.

“He was a great family man. The family meant everything to him,” Williams said, remembering outings to a family cottage on the DuPage River near Channahon.

Williams has a memory of her grandfather’s time as mayor.

“When he was mayor, he worked half a day on Saturdays,” she said. “He loved movies, and I loved movies. I would go to meet him, and we would go to lunch at the Rialto cafeteria, and then we would go to the movies.”

It was those kinds of stories that made Ward so fond of the great-grandfather she never met.

“I know he didn’t do what he did for

OBITUARIES THOMAS R. ALLISON Thomas R. Allison “Tom,” age 73. Suddenly Sunday, May 22, 2016, at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center.

Born in Joliet and a lifelong Joliet and New Lenox area resident, retiring to Goose Lake in 1999. A member of the Will County Carpenters Union Local #174 for 48 years. He was a member of the Will County Audubon Society.

Thomas also received Volunteer of the Year Award from the Will County Forest Preserve for his outstanding commitment to the district.

Thomas was an expert “birder,” he loved teaching others about birds. He was a field-trip leader for 20 years and was a volunteer at Lake Renwick for 25 years. His love of the outdoors and wildlife was unparalleled.

Preceded by his parents, Arthur and Evelyn Allison; and one brother, Wayne Allison.

Survived by loving and devoted wife of 51 years, Carol E. (nee Watkins) Allison; one daughter, Christine (Gregory Furman) Allison of Chicago; three grandchildren, Thomas, Allison and Katrina Furman, all of Chicago; three brothers; two sisters; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

MARGARET J. HURLEY Margaret J. Hurley, age 84, of Shorewood. The Angels came and called Margaret Home on March 21, 2016, at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home with her loving family by her side. Born in 1931, in Chicago, to Arthur and Margaret (nee Stance) Goewey.

Survived by her children, Thomas (Jyme) of Shorewood, Judy Hurley of Chandler, AZ, and Timothy, Karen and Robert Hurley of Shorewood; grandchildren, Kelly (Louis) Haussmann, Thomas Jr. (Christina), Kevin (Amanda), Ryan and Justin Hurley; and eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Arthur Goewey and Michael

(Catherine) Goewey. Also survived by her fond sister-in-law, Eileen Hurley-Lightell; and her special friend, Bill Kalchbrenner, who lovingly referred to her as his “Sweetheart.”

Preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, William Hurley; daughter, Patricia Hurley; parents, Arthur and Margaret (nee Stance) Goewey; and her stepfather, Albert Zahour.

Margaret was employed for several years at Olin Box Company Sperry New Holland Timco and her very favorite job (Are You Traveling) which she retired from but continued to enjoy traveling. Margaret (Marge as she was known) was very active in her community Troy Volunteer Fire Department Women’s Auxiliary, Shorewood Lioness and many more. She will be sadly missed by her “Buddies” at the Troy Township Community Senior Center.

Carolyn J. Hutten (nee Hermanski), age 71, of Joliet, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 21, 2016, at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center with her family by her side.

Born March 15, 1945, in Chicago, she was the daughter of Richard S. and Virginia J. (Baczynski) Hermanski.

She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of St. Francis, and went on to receive a master’s degree from the National College of Education. Carolyn devoted her life to education serving as both a teacher and Dean of Students, primarily with Valley View School District #365U in Romeoville, retiring after 30 years of service. She enjoyed getting together with her friends through their social groups, the College Club and the Birthday Club. A breast cancer survivor, she also actively supported various breast cancer and diabetes organizations with both her time and resources.

Her greatest pride and joy, however, were her family, especially her beloved grandchildren.

She was blessed with many lifelong friendships,

Rosemary “Rosie” Shea (nee Quigley), age 84, passed away peacefully Sunday, May 22, 2016, at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center with her family by her side.

Born in Moline, on April 11, 1932, to the late Patrick and Lucienna Quigley and raised in Davenport, IA. She attended Sacred Heart School and was part of the ICA graduating class of 1950. Rosie worked at the College of St. Francis and spent a great deal of time volunteering at Daybreak Shelter.

She was also a longtime active member of St. Patrick’s Parish in Joliet.

One of her fondest childhood memories was spending time with her sister, Bev, on their grandparent’s farm. However, Rosie’s greatest life achievement was her family. She was a devoted wife to Gene, with whom she enjoyed 60 wonderful years of marriage. Rosie was a dedicated mother to her eight children; how she pulled off family vacations for eight kids with a station wagon and a car top carrier is still a wonder to her kids today. She was inspired more by Erma Bombeck than Martha Stewart. To top it off, she was the most loving grandmother to her 26 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Spending time with her family and friends brought Rosie ultimate joy.

One of her favorite traditions was the 22 summers she spent in Union Pier, Michigan, on the lake with ALL her family (always looking for that green flash).

She also enjoyed attending countless family sporting events and activities for all of her children and grandchildren. Some of her favorite times were spent at Braidwood Recreational Club. Rosie will be remembered for the good times she had, her fun-loving nature and the ever-present smile on her face.

She had a way of bringing people together; a stranger was never a stranger for long in her presence.

Jason Bruce McAllister, age 62, of Joliet and Plainfield, passed away suddenly Saturday, May 21, 2016, at his home.

He was born Aug. 9, 1953, to the loving late parents, Edward and Shirley McAllister.

Automatic voter registration questioned

CHICAGO – A plan to make Illinois the next state to allow automatic voter registration is moving through the Legislature despite the state’s leading election authority having serious doubts that it has the ability and money to roll it out, especially with one deadline before November’s election.

After the Senate easily approved it, the House is poised to take up a proposal in the coming days making the State Board of Elections the clearinghouse for automatically registering voters.

By Sept. 1, the board would have to conduct a voter file update with state agencies’ data going back a year. The whole plan would be in place by 2018.

Similar to laws in Oregon, California, West Virginia and Vermont, the Illinois plan would allow voters to opt out of automatic registration. Democrats, including those in the House where a committee listed it on a Sunday agenda, say it’ll increase civic participation and modernize systems. They point to President Barack Obama’s call to make automatic voter registration “the new norm” nationwide during a February

3 Illinois men killed, 1 injured in Kankakee County crash

KANKAKEE – The Kankakee County coroner said autopsies have been performed and three men have been identified who were killed in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 57.

Kankakee County Coroner Bob Gessner identified the victims Monday afternoon as Lukas Frye, 25, of Milford, Randy Gates, 56, of Kankakee, and Eddie Sarkozi, 43, of Iroquois. A fourth, unidentified man was injured.

The Daily Journal reported that the car was tossed into a culvert Monday morning near Route 45/52. Two of the dead men were pinned inside the vehicle and the third, the driver, was ejected. The injured man made it

High court says it won’t reconsider Blagojevich case

WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court won’t reconsider its decision to reject former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s appeal of his corruption convictions.

The justices Monday denied without comment a long-shot petition urging the court to take another look at the case.

The court first turned down Blagojevich’s appeal March 28.

He challenged an appeals court ruling that said he crossed the line when he sought money in exchange for naming someone to fill the vacant Senate seat once occupied by President Barack Obama.

Opponents elsewhere, including GOPheavy West Virginia, claim automatic registration only adds apathetic voters.

Estimates vary, but supporters claim there is potential for 2 million new Illinois voters to be registered.

Batavia man to finish 50-state marathon quest in Michigan

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – An Illinois man is set to complete his goal of running a marathon in all 50 states after he makes it across the finish line at a 26-mile race in Michigan.

Kevin Ely of Batavia will run Saturday in the 34th annual Bayshore Marathon in Traverse City, the Traverse City Record-Eagle reported.

Ely initially began his quest to run 50 marathons in 50 states as a personal goal. He had already checked 13 states off the list when he attended an expo in California, where he learned

Illinois farmers see changes in property tax assessments

CARBONDALE – Illinois farmers are paying attention to assessed land value as they pay their 2016 property taxes because of a remedy to a disparity that hinged on soil quality.

In Illinois, calculating the value of cropland takes soil productivity into account. Central Illinois acreage with better soil is valued higher for tax purposes.

Southern Illinois’ less-productive acreage is valued lower. State law had held value changes to 10 percent a year. That meant the assessed value of lower-quality soils was held artificially low.

A fix was enacted in 2013, limiting value changes to 10 percent of the state median cropland productivity value.

The change reportedly means values on lower-quality soil will increase at a faster rate. Properties with better soil will increase at a slower rate.

Top court nixes all-white jury verdict, death sentence A state trooper was shot in the WASHINGTON –The Supreme Court upended the conviction and death sentence of a black Georgia man Monday because prosecutors violated the Constitution by excluding African-Americans from the all-white jury that determined his fate.

Man suspected in officer’s slaying had lengthy record

BOSTON – The man suspected of killing a Massachusetts police officer during a weekend traffic stop had a lengthy criminal record and had been released from a maximum-security prison in 2013, officials said Monday.

The suspect, Jorge Zambrano, 35, was fatally shot by police late Sunday after he fired at them from a bedroom closet inside a duplex apartment in Oxford, investigators said.

State officials said Zambrano had been released from the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley on Nov. 1, 2013, after serving a seven-year sentence on charges including cocaine trafficking, two counts of assault and battery on a police officer and two counts of resisting arrest.

Woman, girl hospitalized after shark attacks

Officials said an 11-year-old girl and a 57-year-old woman were taken to hospitals after they were bitten by sharks at separate locations in Florida.

Multiple news agencies report the first attack took place Saturday afternoon when the girl was swimming in Jacksonville. Family members told news outlets the girl was bitten on her back, arm and hand. She was hospitalized and will need surgery.

The second attack took place Sunday afternoon in Vero Beach, about 200 miles south of the first incident. Police said a shark bit Mary Marcus, 57, in the leg as she swam about 100 yards off the beach. She was taken to the hospital with injuries not deemed to be life-threatening.

Baltimore officer cleared of all charges in Freddie Gray case

BALTIMORE – Prosecutors failed for the second time in their bid to hold Baltimore police accountable for the arrest and death of Freddie Gray when an officer was acquitted Monday in the racially charged case that triggered riots a year ago.

A judge cleared Officer Edward Nero of assault, reckless endangerment and misconduct, concluding that Nero played little role in Gray’s arrest and wasn’t responsible for the failure to buckle the black man into the police van where he suffered a broken neck.

Upon hearing the verdict, Nero hugged his attorney and appeared to wipe away a tear.

Nero, who is white, was the second of six officers charged in the case to stand trial. The manslaughter case against Officer William Porter ended in a mistrial in December when the jury deadlocked. Prosecutors plan to retry him in September.

Nero’s lawyers said he and his wife and family are “elated that this nightmare is finally over.”

“The state’s attorney for Baltimore City rushed to charge him, as well as the other five officers, completely disregarding the facts of the case and the applicable law,” they said in a statement.

Prosecutors had no comment; they are under a gag order.

Trial No. 3 – that of van driver Caesar Goodson, who prosecutors believe is most culpable in Gray’s death – is set to begin in

two weeks. He is charged with second-degree murder.

David Weinstein, a Florida attorney and former federal civil-rights prosecutor who has been following the case, said the verdict probably will serve as a “wake-up call” for prosecutors.

“This speaks to the notion a lot of people had when this first happened, which is that it was a rush to judgment,” Weinstein said.

“The state’s attorney was trying to balance what she had with the public outcry and call to action given the climate in Baltimore and across the U.S. concerning policing, and I think she was overreaching.”

Gray died a week after suffering a spinal injury in the back of the van while he was handcuffed and shackled but not belted in.

His death set off looting and arson that prompted authorities to declare a citywide curfew and call out the National Guard to quell unrest in Baltimore for the first time since the riots that erupted in 1968 over the assassination of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Gray’s name became a rallying cry in the growing furor over the deaths of black men in clashes with police.

Nero, 30, waived his right to a jury trial, choosing instead to let Circuit Judge Barry Williams decide his fate. The assault charge alone carried up to 10 years in prison.

“The state’s theory has been one of recklessness and negligence,” the judge said in his ruling. “There has been no evidence that the defendant intended for a crime to occur.”

More crazy talk in Springfield, but no solutions It has looked to me for a very long time that House Speaker Michael Madigan has been waiting for an existential state crisis to force Gov. Bruce Rauner to back completely away from his anti-union, pro-business Turnaround Agenda so they can pass a “clean” state budget.

As you surely know by now, the governor won’t agree to a budget deal until he gets things such as changes to workers’ compensation insurance laws and reductions of collective bargaining rights for government union members.

Whether that crisis comes after the Illinois Supreme Court rules that state workers cannot be paid without an appropriation, or whether it’s when schools and/or universities don’t open on time, or if Republicans threaten to break ranks on overrides of the governor’s appropriations vetoes (particularly on higher education funding), or a local mayor shuts off the water or sewer access to an important state facility, like a prison, I don’t know.

Nobody does.

The Supreme Court ruled earlier this year that state employees could not receive back pay without a formal legislative appropriation. That ruling would appear to apply to the current situation where employees are being paid by court order because

VIEWS Rich Miller Rauner vetoed their salaries out of the budget last year (along with about everything else). The court usually goes on break from June through August, so that potential crisis might be months away.

Most schools and universities won’t truly feel the pinch until late July or August. And because Team Rauner has excelled at preventing Republicans from breaking ranks on overrides, any appropriations bill will likely be closely examined for a veto’s potential to wreak any havoc.

I think almost everyone, including Madigan, has been surprised at how long Rauner’s administration has been able to keep state facilities open without an official budget. They can’t pay for electricity, or water or other services because, again, Rauner vetoed those appropriations last year.

The administration is performing these minor miracles at least partly because they suspect that Madigan is trying to wait them out. They don’t want a crisis to force their hands on economic reforms. A tax hike without significant reforms would be an utter

political disaster for this governor – which both he and Madigan understand.

Without compromises, we’re heading for more months without a budget, so we could very well see whether something big will crash before the election.

And along those lines, I’ve been hearing people say that the two sides will just have to fight it out in the November elections before this impasse can be resolved.

But that’s crazy talk.

First, what are the social service providers supposed to do without a real budget until then? “Collapse,” is your answer. What will happen then?

Widespread, utter misery.

Second, if there’s no budget agreement, then this will be, by far, the most brutal campaign season in memory. And as one statehouse type pointed out to me the other day, win or lose, members in both parties will return to November’s post-election veto session carrying the 60 or so harshly negative mailers sent against them and a very bad attitude. It’ll take quite a while before everybody calms down.

Third, Madigan currently is three votes shy of a reliable veto-proof supermajority because three House Democrats can’t be counted on to vote for taxes or spending. He got rid of

one of those guys in the primary when Rep. Ken Dunkin, D-Chicago, went down hard.

That means Madigan has to net at the very least two more pickups to impose his will on Rauner by overriding his vetoes. Madigan does have a shot at picking up some seats because of the presidential turnout dynamics and Donald Trump that will favor Democrats, but his district maps already might be stretched to their partisan limits. And the Republicans have a shot at picking up some seats in areas where Trump could do well.

So, putting this off until after November may just mean an even worse status quo, with fiscal carnage, a destruction of the social services safety net and massively hardened feelings.

And, even if Madigan picks up lots of seats, does anybody really think he’ll try to run a purely Democratic tax hike and then override the governor’s veto? That would be political disaster for his members.

So the election could essentially mean that Madigan will simply override spending vetoes and the debt will continue to accumulate.

That’s no solution.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Kirk’s leadership encourages support for clean energy

To the Editor: U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk, R-Illinois, deserves to be commended for being one of five Republican senators to address the impact of climate change by encouraging common-sense congressional support for clean energy research and development.

As a lead sponsor of an amendment to the Energy and Water Development and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, Kirk called for the United States to be a world leader in supporting research and development of clean energy technology to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change. The amendment also explicitly recognizes that climate change is happening, but it also states that human activity contributes to rising temperatures.

It is imperative that our leaders in Washington actively participate in efforts to promote market-based approaches that welcome and advance more innovative and cleaner energy technologies. These cleaner energy technologies are vital to America’s economic growth, energy independence and national security needs. That’s a victory for Illinois Kirk should be applauded for setting aside partisanship and seeking results for free-market energy reforms that create jobs. Senate Republicans should follow Kirk’s lead in supporting new technologies that improve the quality of Illinois’ air, water and climate.

This was Joliet Central visiting Joliet West before a good-sized crowd in a quarterfinal game of the Class 4A Bradley Regional.

Wild and crazy things were bound to happen.

West (9-21-1), the No. 9 seed in its sub-sectional, scored twice in the bottom of the fourth inning to break a 6-6 tie, and senior left-hander Colton

Foote shut down the 10th-seeded Steelmen (6-26) the rest of the way as the Tigers prevailed, 8-6.

Their reward is a semifinal date with No. 1 seed Normal Community at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at Bradley.

“Anytime we meet those guys (Steelmen), we know it’s going to be a battle,” West coach John Karczewski said. “We had a little luck on our side today, but in the end, we found a way to get it done.”

Thanks largely to Foote. Starter Matt Meier left after three innings

with the Tigers on top, 6-5.

Central second baseman Jawan Cooper, whose speed was a huge factor throughout, was the first batter Foote faced in the bottom of the fourth inning, and he beat out a routine ground ball to short. Foote then trapped him off first, but he escaped the rundown for a steal of second. He stole third and scored on a wild pitch to tie it, 6-6.

“Yeah, that kid is quick,” Foote said of Cooper.

However, Foote ended that inning

with a strikeout and retired 10 of the last 11 Central hitters, fanning seven in his four-inning stint. The only runner to reach against him after the fourth inning was on a two-out error in the seventh.

“I had to stay in there, and I could have pitched more,” said Foote, who blanked Homewood-Flossmoor last Thursday. “Even if the arm hurts a little, I have to have the pitcher’s mentality.”

Joliet West rallies past Plainfield South

cherron@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – Joliet West’s boys volleyball team was up against the ropes on several occasions in Monday’s regional quarterfinal match with Plainfield South.

After dropping the opening set, the Tigers were three points away from being eliminated in the middle game before rallying. And then in the finale, they were within four points of seeing their season come to an early conclusion.

But each time the pressure was on, West answered and that’s why it was able to rally for a 22-25, 25-23, 25-22 victory over the Cougars. As a result, it meets Minooka on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in the Lockport Regional semifinals.

“We knew it was going to be a battle each night,” Tigers coach Jason Herrmann said. “This was a testament to how good Plainfield South is. They came out working hard while we were a little hesitant. We’ve been working a lot on our mental toughness. Our motto is ‘one for one’, which is taking each

play one play at a time. So no matter what the deficit is, you can always come back with strength and toughness and not fold when the pressure is on.”

In the third set, things were looking up for West (22-13) after it used a kill from Luke Van Eck (11 kills) and a kill and a block from Kyler Van Rossum-O’Connell (30 assists, three solo blocks, 12 digs) to grab a 13-9 advantage.

The Tigers were still up 17-13 when South scored seven of the next eight points to take a 20-18 lead. Logan Nash and Rhome Apton each had two kills during that key spurt.

But West responded by going on a 7-2 run to close things out. Chris Beltran (15 digs) served an ace to tie it at 21-21 and then after two hitting errors, Scott Lyman (14 kills, two solo blocks) got a kill to make it 24-21 and the squads traded the final two points of the match.

“We always seem to get down and then we have to push even harder to come back and that’s exactly what we did,” Lyman said. “After their first

game loss, we knew that we had to do something in the second game if we didn’t want to go home.

“Our setter, Kyler, is always pushing us. We knew we couldn’t going one-for-one, we had to go two-for-one, and that’s how you win games. We have seven seniors this year and we just didn’t want to go home yet, so we knew that we had to keep pushing.”

Things were looking good for the Cougars after Apton got a kill and Matt Friddle served an ace to give them a 13-8 lead in the middle set. They went up 21-18 on a kill by Brandon Langys and took a 22-19 lead following a long serve.

But Van Eck got a kill to start a 5-0 run for the Tigers. With Beltran serving up four points, Lyman recorded a block to go with three hitting errors to go up 24-22.

“It was a tough first set, but in the second set we all came back as a team,” Van Eck said. “We just kept pushing and we all connected. They pushed ahead in the last set but we stepped up to the occasion and fought back real well. Matches like this that

West scored the decisive fourth-inning runs when Jordan Long greeted Central reliever Jomarre McNair with a single, Kory Hayden reached on a sacrifice and error, and Alex Tibble was hit by a pitch. Adam Scharf’s sacrifice fly drove home the go-ahead run and Noah Plunge’s two-out RBI single made it 8-6.

“We didn’t take advantage of the opportunities we had, and we gave up too many unearned runs,” Central coach Kevin Fitzgerald said. “What it really comes down to is we did not execute defensively.”

The Tigers scored three times in the first inning after the first two hitters reached on errors. Plunge knocked in a run on a groundout and Eastin May tripled one home.

Central, though, came right back.

Two walks and Tom Langley’s single filled the bases. West third baseman Long dove to snag the hard ground ball hit by Steelmen starting pitcher Tyler Lawson and turned it into a run-scoring forceout.

After the Tigers closed to within 2322 following a kill by Lyman, the Cougars wrapped up the victory by getting a kill from Nick Welter and a block from Apton.

“It was a tough regional, so we knew that all of the teams that we’d play would be good competition,” South coach Taryn Surbaugh said.

“My team was on top of the score more often than we weren’t and I thought we let it slip away on our own accord. But Joliet West is a good team, too, and they weren’t going to give it away. We had a lot of talent and heart and you only get to see that once in a while. Before Cooper went about getting the Steelmen into a 6-6 tie, West had regained the lead, 6-5, with a threerun third inning. Tibble and Scharf opened with singles off Lawson, Nick Gulliford hit a sacrifice fly and two more scored on Lorenzo Serrato’s hot shot past shortstop.

Cooper’s quickness got Central back even, but once Foote was staked to a two-run lead, he took control.

“We had the one good inning, it just wasn’t enough,” Fitzgerald said.

“I would have liked for our seniors, like Tyler (Lawson) and Luke (DeBenedetti) to stay in this a little longer, but it didn’t happen.”

“Running is one of the hardest sports, since you get out of it what you put in,” Rosendo said. “I’m very fortunate that the Eastern coach reached out to me because they’re the only D-I school that did. I loved it there and my head coach in track, coach (Michael) White, ran there and it would be nice for me to follow in his footsteps.

“This is a special place and I love it here. Not a lot of people expect a lot from Joliet, but I used that to motivate me to do better. It made me feel good to represent my city. Running in college will be a lot harder but I’m excited to accept that challenge.”

Three others will compete in cross country or track and field. They are Morayma Barron (St. Francis), David Carter (Northern Iowa) and Tamara Snevely (Illinois Wesleyan).

“I’ve had a lot of obstacles growing up, but through sports and school, I’ve been able to have an outlet where I can finally discover who I am, what I want and how I’m going to get there,” Snevely said. “And track and field and pole vault specifically has helped me do that. A lot of people are terrified of pole vault, but I find the thrill of falling 10 feet kind of exciting.

“Competing for Joliet Central has been amazing. Our conference is extremely tough and that’s kind of what

pushed me so hard because I wanted to be competitive.”

Three wrestlers also will get the chance to compete in college with two going to the same school. Jason Jude and Kyle York are headed to Ancilla, while James Budrick-Diaz will not only wrestle at Alma, but also play football there.

“I’m so excited to be able to wrestle in college,” Budrick-Diaz said. “I’m a late bloomer since I only started wrestling in eighth grade. It was amazing when the coach from Alma contacted me and said they wanted me to wrestle for them. I was blown away, it was amazing.

“Joliet Central is my home, so it was great to represent it. We’re coming back and each year that I’ve been here we’ve been getting better. We’ve got new talent coming in and good JV kids coming up to varsity. There’s going to be a lot more wrestlers going to college.”

JOLIET – College signing days are special occasions for all of the schools that hold them.

But the event takes on perhaps even more significance at a setting such as Joliet Central, where many of the athletes face different challenges than their counterparts at nearby schools.

But 18 Central athletes proved to be good enough to make the move to the next level and were recognized during a program organized by athletic director Steve Locke last week.

The group reflected typical college athletics, with several of them remaining local and almost all selecting Division III or NAIA programs to continue their careers and education.

It was clear what the chance to compete in college means to these athletes, who thanked family members and coaches during a speech, which followed coaches’ comments.

Football players Alex Ruettiger (St. Francis), Kamren Smith (Carthage) and Ezequiel Castro (Concordia Wisconsin) are just three of those getting that chance.

“I’m real excited to be going to St. Francis,” Ruettiger said. “They just came off a conference championship and have a really good team. They have an All-American defensive end and I can try to model his technique.

“I had a good feeling that I could play at the next level. Freshman year, coach (Tony) Juarez sat me down after a game and told me to keep working at it and I would get a college scholarship, and it paid off. I’m so thankful for all of my coaches, they really helped me. Being in three sports kept me busy and was hard at times, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”

The lone basketball player to sign, Ashley Hare, was also a three-sport athlete, like Ruettiger. And also like him, she will continue her education and career at St. Francis.

“I’m looking forward to joining their team since their record was good and they made it far in the playoffs,” Hare said. “She (USF coach Samantha Quigley) is really inspiring, and so is her sister, Allie, and I look up to them because their passion for basketball is great. I can’t wait to be a part of it.

“It’s a great opportunity to move on to the next level, especially after playing three sports. That means that all of my hard work in high school and before that is all finally paying off.”

Raul Rosendo was the lone athlete to receive a scholarship to a Division I school. He will continue his cross country career at Eastern Illinois.

CHICAGO – White Sox manager Robin Ventura has been tinkering for a week looking to find a spark for his slumping offense.

The lineup for the opener of Monday’s doubleheader had regular second baseman Brett Lawrie as the designated hitter, and he embraced the role.

Lawrie broke a fifth-inning tie with a three-run homer, Todd Frazier hit his 14th of the season and the Sox held on for a 7-6 victory over the Cleveland Indians.

“The other day he had a day off,” Ventura said of Lawrie. “The way he was swinging it today, you liked the way it was coming off his bat.”

“I saw a bunch of pitches, sliders and curveballs, and it allowed me at 3-2 to get a fastball and I didn’t miss it,” Lawrie said.

Lawrie also singled and walked three times as the Sox produced 10 hits. Frazier’s solo shot in the first was his second in two days and gave him the AL lead.

Clevinger (0-1) gave up seven hits over five innings in his second big league start.

“I felt like, especially with this offense scoring those runs, I was killing the momentum,” Clevinger said.

The Associated Press ST. LOUIS – Randal Grichuck hit a tiebreaking solo homer in the ninth to lift the St. Louis Cardinals to a 4-3 win over the Cubs on Monday night.

Matt Adams tied the score with a two-run homer off in the seventh for St. Louis’ major league-leading ninth pinchhit homer of the season. It also ended a streak of 13 innings of one-run pitching

by Cubs’ starter John Lackey against his former team.

Grichuk drove a 2-2 pitch off of Adam Warren (3-1) for the win. Trevor Rosenthal (2-1) pitched a scoreless ninth.

The Cubs’ Ben Zobrist had three singles and a walk, extending his streak to 29 starts with reaching safely. He is hit-

ting .387 during that span.

St. Louis starter Adam Wainwright pitched in and out of trouble throughout his six innings, scattering seven hits and stranding eight runners, while throwing 68 of his 108 pitches for strikes.

Lackey gave up three runs in seven economical innings. He struck out nine while throwing just 87 pitches.

Miguel Montero’s second single of the game tied it at 1-1 in the fourth, breaking a 26-inning scoreless streak Wainwright had against the Cubs dating back to May 13, 2014.

Javier Baez followed with a bunt, but was awarded an infield single after Cardinals second baseman Kolten Wong failed to backup first on the play, setting up a fielder’s choice from Addison Russell that made it 2-1 Cubs.

Notes and quotes from last Saturday’s Joliet West Boys Tennis Sectional: Jack Randall is only a sophomore at Lockport, but he already is thinking in terms of earning a medal (finishing in the top six) at the state tournament.

He is talented. Anyone who watched him build his 6-1, 6-0 semifinal victory over Joliet West co-op sophomore Morgan Red or his 6-2, 6-0 championship victory over Joliet Catholic senior Jack Geissler will attest to that.

He also has worked hard to achieve his status as one of the state’s best in his class. Part of that hard work came while playing often against older competition – for example, his brothers, Chad and Lucas.

“I’ve always played against a lot of older guys,” Randall said. “Chad graduated from St. Francis a couple of years ago and Lucas is at St. Francis now. I’ve played them a lot through the years.

“It was Chad’s birthday today. I told him I was going to win this for him.”

The state tournament begins Thursday at Arlington Heights and other neighboring suburbs. Randall recorded a top-16 finish as a freshman. He lost in three sets in his final Friday match, narrowly missing a chance to participate Saturday.

“Getting to Saturday is definitely a goal this year,” he said. “I at least want to get into the top six, possibly win it all.”

Lockport coach Bob Champlin noted that Randall has lost two matches all of this season “Both were to very good players, and both times he had some health issues,” Champlin said.

• For the last several years, Champlin has coached the Lockport girls in the fall and the boys in the spring.

“The girls are leading in sectional titles,” Champlin said. “I believe it’s nine to six now. But this is the first time we won both the girls and boys sectionals in the same school year.

“It is interesting coaching both. I have daughters; the girls are more social. With the boys, it’s more of an ‘OK, let’s go win this,’ approach.”

• Champlin said claiming the singles and doubles championships en route to the sectional title was a first for the Porters. The doubles champs were juniors Nolan Gilbertson and Lucas Pindak, who beat Lemont juniors Faraz Longi and Peter Rogers in the final.

“I took my doubles team to state last year to watch Jack (Randall), and that gave them a incentive for the offseason,” Champlin said. “Nolan went from fourth doubles to first doubles

backs. But we played well. This gives me a good feeling about how we could do at state.”

• Not only will Longi and Rogers represent Lemont at state, but the Indians’ second doubles team of sophomores Charles Balisalisa and Arjan Reddigan were the surprise third-place finishers. They climaxed their run with a 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 victory over Minooka juniors Reed Christensen and Thomas Schieffer, who also qualified for state.

“This is the first trip to state for all four of our guys,” Lemont coach Jon DeGuzman said. “This is rare for us.

We never had our second doubles team qualify out.

“For Faraz (Longi) and Peter (Rogers), the thing is to have fun and play some competitive tennis at state.

I’m proud of the whole team. I’m really excited to see them do so well.”

• Geissler was a bit disappointed with himself in the championship singles match against Randall, but he remains a threat to do well at state.

“When Jack went to state last year, he was trying to get his college set,” JCA coach Scott Allgood said. “This year he knows he is going to Grand Valley State, and he can go out and relax and play the way he is capable of playing. I hope he can place in the 17-32 range, but it’s all in the draw.”

• Not only are Randall and Geissler carrying the singles banner from the Joliet West Sectional, but the thirdand fourth-place finishers, Red and Romeoville senior Miguel Rayos del Sol, also are accomplished.

“All four of the singles qualifiers are top players,” Joliet West coach Kit Gillman said. “They all are really good, they have taken lessons and they have worked hard on their games.”

Danta wins Late-Model feature race

MORRIS – Anthony Danta methodically worked his way through the field from his ninth-place starting position last Friday night in the Late-Model 30-lap feature at Grundy County Speedway. Once he got to the front, though, there was no stopping him.

Danta was 10th after each of the first three laps and moved into ninth for Laps 4 and 5. He jumped to fourth after Lap 6, third after the seventh lap and was in second through Lap 10. He finally took the lead from John Nutley after Lap 11 and led the rest of the way to beat Nutley to the finish line.

Tony Scalpelli Jr. took third, with Eddie Hoffman fourth and Ricky Baker fifth. Rounding out the top 10 were Joe Vinachi, Brian Tedeshi, James Gregait, Brandon Clubb and Dean Patterson.

In the 25-lap Mid-American feature, Matt Clemens, who started in the fifth position, took the lead from pole-sitter Jake Bradley after the seventh lap and led the rest of the way.

Ron Vandermeier Jr. worked his way from starting in the 13th spot to second, while Kevin Gentile took third, Bradley fourth and Jim Kachel fifth.

John Ventrello, Aaron Shelton, Kevin Murphy, Luke Baldwin and Marty McKinney rounded out the top 10.

In the 30-lap 4-cylinder feature, Danielle Dobczyk took the lead from Mac Hastings after Lap 23 and led the final seven laps. She was 0.77 seconds ahead of second-place Bryce Leake, who was followed by Nick Clubb, Dan Schmeissing and Michael Tobush in the top five. Then came Dylan Marshall, Jeff Law, Scott Ingrma, Trevor Starek and Mac Hastings.

In the 25-lap street stock feature, Randy Weese grabbed the lead after Lap 11 and pulled away from the field. He finished more than three seconds ahead of second-place John Senerchia. John Ventrello III, Cheryl Hryn and Christy Penrod completed the top five, with Brandon Reed, Don Lindmoulder, Ryan Moore, Michael Gerike and Rick Dawson completing the top 10.

Friday night’s Memorial Day Special includes a 46-lap Late Model feature, plus racing in Mid-American, Street Stock and Pure Stock divisions.

Stands open at 5:30 p.m. with qualifying at 6:45 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m.

Ben Zordani had two hits, including a home run, and drove in two runs for West (24-8). Matt Monahan hammered a solo shot and Mike Majcher added a double, single and two RBIs. ville (6-23) stunned Naperville North, 6-3, in a quarterfinal game behind Kyle Massaro.

OKLAHOMA CITY – Draymond Green knows who is responsible for his kick to the groin of Thunder center Steven Adams: Russell Westbrook and the rest of the NBA stars who get to the foul line with a whole lot of salesmanship.

Green’s kick felled the 7-foot, 255-pound Adams during the second quarter of Golden State’s Game 3 loss to Oklahoma City in the Western Conference finals on Sunday night.

Peshev and Lucas Randall (Lockport) were named All-CCAC. Peshev earned all-conference accolades for the third consecutive year in both singles and doubles. He notched an 11-12 mark in singles play this season, including a 5-2 record in conference action at the No. 1 position. In doubles, Peshev and Randall combined to finish 6-3 overall with a 5-2 mark in CCAC play.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL Braden, Wyss honored: St. Francis’ Sara

Braden and Alex Wyss (JCA) were named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Great Lakes Region Team. Braden batted .406 with three home runs and 44 RBIs in 46 games. The All-CCAC first-team pick ranked 17th in the NAIA with 20 doubles and was eighth in doubles per game (0.43). She led the Saints with a .619 slugging percentage.

Wyss was the Saints’ leading hitter with a .419 average. She also topped the club in hits (67), walks (18) and on-base percentage (.475).

Wyss joined Braden on the All-CCAC first team.

Sjögren’s syndrome is serious but treatable

Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – A good day for Morris resident Cindy Davids is when she can enjoy a beautiful day.

She might work on her vegetable garden, sit on the patio with her husband, Marty, and watch the finches, or spend time with her son Jacob, playing Monopoly or fishing.

A bad day includes muscle and joint pain, extreme fatigue, sinus infections, motion sickness and a host of other maladies.

Most days are somewhere in between.

Davids has Sjögren’s syndrome, a surprisingly common autoimmune inflammatory disease in which white blood cells attack moisture-producing exocrine glands throughout the body.

The result is an aggregation of symptoms from dry mouth and eyes due to lack of saliva and tears to painful joints from a decrease in synovial fluid and dysfunction of such major organs as the kidneys, lungs, liver, pancreas and central nervous system, according to the Sjögren’s Syndrome Foundation.

Some people with Sjögren’s have only mild discomfort, according to the foundation, while others suffer debilitating symptoms that greatly impair their lives.

“Some days are really, really tough,” Davids said. “Sometimes I just ache so bad.”

A symptom of mimicry

Davids’ physician and Morris Hospital rheumatologist Dr. Hadi Hedayati said many people with Sjögren’s don’t even go the doctor, but when they do, they’re often misdiagnosed.

Sjögren’s, according to the foundation, may be mistaken for menopause, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue and multiple sclerosis. But Sjögren’s, when identified, is controllable and treatable, Hedayati said, which prevents complications.

“Very seldom do they die directly from Sjögren’s syndrome,” Hedayati said.

With Sjögren’s, the antibodies in the syndrome attack moisture-producing glands in the mouth, skin, eyes, vaginal area, and gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts. Women are 90 percent of those diagnosed, and most are diagnosed in their late 40s, according

Corneal ulcerations can result from severe dry eyes, as can cavities and other dental problems due to decreased saliva production, Hedayati said.

Sjögren’s syndrome may cause other symptoms, too, according to the Sjögren’s Syndrome Foundation and the American College of Rheumatology.

These include, a gritty or burning sensation in the eyes, difficulty talking or swallowing, a sore or cracked tongue, a dry or burning throat, dry, peeling lips, a dry nose, vaginal and skin dryness, change in taste or smell, heartburn or reflux, recurrent bronchitis, peripheral neuropathy, muscle pain, swelling of the glands around the face and neck, Raynaud’s phenomenon and digestive problems.

In addition, people with Sjögren’s are at increased risk for Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Hedayati said. Sjögren’s has no cure and no direct treatment.

Rather, each symptom is individually treated. Eye drops for dry eyes, soft toothbrushes and good dental hygiene for the dental problems, anti-inflammatories for the muscle and joint pain, and antibiotics for infections of blocked glands are some of the treatments, Hedayati said.

Living with Sjögren’s

Davids first had symptoms one evening 13 years ago – soreness and swelling in her left cheek.

“I went to bed early,” Davids said.

“Marty checked on me, and my cheek was out to here. He said, ‘We’re going to the emergency room.’”

“She looked like she had a banana in her cheek,” her husband said, “all the way from the top of her ear down to her chin.”

Davids had a serious infection in her parotid salivary gland and was treated with two antibiotics and pain relievers in the intensive care unit.

Samples of her blood were sent to Mayo Clinic.

“I was in a lot of pain,” Davids said.

Today, Davids takes several medications, some of which are costly. She has tear duct plugs. She’s had surgeries for her bladder, trigger thumb and sinuses. Most of her sense of smell and much of her taste is gone.

She must avoid direct sunlight, has little endurance and can sleep 16 straight hours and still be tired.

“I didn’t think I’d live this long,” Davids said.

But controlling symptoms means Davids can continue working as a bus driver. She doesn’t take any pain medications Mondays through Fridays, and she’s glad she can still be productive.

“We have to make sure we do things in moderation,” Davids said. “I can’t do the big hikes like I used to do, and I don’t bowl anymore.”

Davids feels her syndrome is in God’s hands.

“Having God as your go-to makes a difference,” Davids said. “Whatever his plan is for me, I have to let that happen. ... Sjögren’s is not the end of life. It’s just a different way of life.”

HEALTH BRIEFS Fire Starter of the Month for April brightens lives of patients

MORRIS – Tonya Cavanaugh proves every day she has one of the biggest hearts around.

It’s only fitting that she just happens to strengthen hearts for a living as a cardiac rehabilitation nurse at Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers.

It’s because of her upbeat energy and genuine compassion that Cavanaugh, of Braidwood, was named Morris Hospital’s April Fire Starter of the Month.

As a cardiac rehabilitation nurse, Cavanaugh cares for patients recovering from heart conditions and procedures.

She monitors patients during their cardiac conditioning to make sure they do it safely, and she also teaches those patients how to care for their hearts and watch for potentially harmful signs and symptoms.

Cavanaugh leads the Heart Failure Support Group, a support system for anyone who has been diagnosed with heart failure.

She volunteers her time and creativity to organize fun activities and events for cardiac rehabilitation patients.

HOMER GLEN – The National Technical Institute for the Deaf at Rochester Institute of Technology held its first-ever Student Research Fair on April 15.

Peter Michor of Homer Glen, who is studying in the game design and development program, presented “Booth ASL Storytelling App.” The fair gave undergraduate and graduate students, in partnership with faculty mentors, the opportunity to present posters or give demonstrations on topics related to health science, communication studies, access technology and environmental research, among others.

Few surgery options for emphysema Dear Dr. K: My mother has severe emphysema. Medication and oxygen therapy aren’t helping much anymore. Are there any good surgical options?

Dear Reader: Emphysema is a long-term lung problem that makes it harder and harder to breathe as the disease progresses.

It often is grouped together with chronic bronchitis under the label of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Emphysema destroys the walls between tiny air sacs (alveoli) in the lungs. When this happens, the lungs cannot absorb oxygen and expel carbon dioxide normally. So they deliver less oxygen to the bloodstream.

(I’ve put an illustration on my website, www.askdoctork.com.) The lung tissue also loses its resilience, which makes it harder to expel air as forcefully. This leaves air trapped in the air sacs.

All of these changes result in shortness of breath. As the disease worsens, a person with emphysema may have trouble catching his or her breath even while sitting or lying down.

Medications that help open the airways are the cornerstone of treatment. Many people eventually also need supplemental oxygen therapy.

Surgery is an option only for people with severe emphysema who have trouble breathing despite medical treatment and pulmonary rehabilitation. (Pulmonary rehab is therapy that combines exercise breathing retraining, patient education and psychological support.)

The most common surgery is lung volume reduction surgery, in which a surgeon removes damaged areas of the lung. The idea is to create space in which healthier lung tissue can expand and contract more easily. It also enables the diaphragm to return to a more normal position, so it can work more effectively to get air in

A newer, less invasive procedure called bronchoscopic lung volume reduction surgery sometimes can be done instead. It involves putting one-way valves into the airways leading to the diseased parts of the lung. The valves let air out but not in. This collapses the diseased parts of the lung.

This procedure does not involve cutting open the chest, as traditional surgery does, but the result is similar: The space taken by an ineffective part of the lung is freed up.

In another procedure, bullectomy, the surgeon removes large, abnormal air pockets in the lungs. This procedure is done infrequently.

The final option is lung transplantation. It is a last resort for people whose lungs are failing because there is just not enough healthy lung left from the ravages of emphysema. This physically demanding procedure is usually done only on younger people, who are more likely to withstand the risks.

In other words, the few treatments available for end-stage emphysema are pretty drastic and only partly effective. But at least there is something to offer your mother that may have some benefit.

The vast majority of cases of emphysema are caused by smoking tobacco. That means there’s a way to never have to face those drastic choices: Quit, before it’s too late.

co-worker has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. She’s not sure how long she may have. She is relatively young, so it’s tragic.

We have excellent insurance from work, national health care and disability insurance.

Another co-worker sent out an email with a link to a crowdfunding site as well as an invitation to a party selling products. The proceeds will be donated to fulfilling a “cancer bucket list,” which includes pampering, trips and other luxuries. I sympathize with anyone having a terminal illness, but why does that mean I have to give money? Do they have a right to be pampered on other people’s dime?

This kind of fundraising, without real financial need, seems to happen often: Co-workers who have had accidents, fires, unexpected or stressful incidents all have office collections set up, even when they are fully insured and the damage is covered by their policies. A friend (or Human Resources) contacts everyone who has had even a passing interaction with the individual and solicits donations. I am happy to write letters and notes to people I know are having a hard time. I visit with closer friends and may bring a meal or flowers to their home. But people I’ve spent only a few hours with asking for money for luxuries seems nervy to me. Am I a tightwad, or is a financial donation necessary to express condolences?

If West does not play another club, South can draw trumps and cash pointed-suit winners. Or, when West leads a third club, declarer ruffs and plays on spades. East ruffs the second, but a fourth club is ruffed in the dummy, trumps drawn, and diamonds cashed.
