Lincoln Highway – Road Maps Navigating by automobile at the dawn of the 20th century was a difficult proposition because maps appropriate for this new form of transportation were essentially nonexistent.

By the late 1890s and early 1900s, state road books, route books, automobile road guides and route lists were regionally available to aid the motorist.

Even with the early route books and road guides, it still was difficult for the early motorist traveling along the Lincoln Highway. The early methods for showing the auto road tended to be descriptive in words and pictures. Typical entries in the automobile guides often were confusing and left travelers navigating using local landmarks, rivers, statues, cliffs and manmade structures. A typical entry might read: “Enter Washington Park, curving slightly right and immediately taking left fork at open square, passing refectory building over to right.”

By the early teens, as roads were improved, organizations, such as the Automobile Association of America, introduced road guides in an effort to aid and assist their members.

Soon automobile clubs, road and highway associations, and other travel-related organizations sponsored or published road guides during the first three decades of the early 20th century.

Such publications included the Automobile Green Book, official guidebook of the Automobile Legal Association of Massachusetts; King’s Official Route Guide, published by Sidney J. King of Chicago; the Interstate Automobile Tourists’ Guide, published by F. S. Blanchard and Company of Worchester, Massachusetts; and the Official Automobile Blue Book, published by the Automobile Blue Book Publishing Company of New York.

After 1910, the automobile age began to accelerate as a parade of businesses and commercial organizations began to offer brand name promotional maps and guides to the motoring public.

Event empowers people to live eco-friendly, socially-responsible lives

mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – One Easter Sunday years ago, Kim Biske carved a block of butter into the shape of a duck and placed the butter duck on her eventual husband’s porch.

“It was kind of an ice-breaker for us,” said Biske, of Bolingbrook.

That, along with her daughter’s affinity for ducks, were the inspirations behind the name of her company – Butter Duck Farms – which she operates out of the family’s home.

Biske was one of more than 70 eco-conscious exhibits and vendors on hand from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday for the Bluestem Earth Festival at the University of St. Francis.

The event also featured earth-friendly activities, workshops, live demonstrations, entertainment, local food and children’s activities. It was presented by The Joliet Franciscan Sisters & Associates.

Sister Jane Nienaber, of the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate, said the annual festival promotes Earth-friendly products and educates the community on environmentally friendly practices, as well as justice and peacemaking.

“This festival serves our planet well, which is very much needed these days,” she said.

Nienaber stepped away from volunteering for a moment Saturday to stock up on products from Biske’s booth, which was full of naturally homegrown and handmade soaps, lotions, balms and deodorants. That passion started in 2010, when Biske’s daughter came home with head lice.

“I couldn’t stand the idea of using all the chemicals on her,” Biske said. “So I made a 100-percent-natural treatment for it.”

Most items sold by Butter Duck Farms have been developed because of customers who have made specific requests or suggestions. Some of Biske’s customers believe chemicals lead to different sicknesses and ailments, such as Alzheimer’s.

“I’m not sure whether it’s true or not [about Alzheimer’s], but I’d rather eliminate what I can,” Biske said. “It feels good to eliminate chemicals from people’s lives and use products from the Earth to take care of yourself.”

While Biske’s products take care of the outer body, others – such as Bloomberg Gardens – ensure people maintain a natural diet. Rick Bloomberg,

owner of Bloomberg Gardens, said his 7-year-old side business has grown a little bigger than he expected.

“It started from people lacking and wanting organic plants in our area,”

said Bloomberg, of Homewood. “We wanted to do it for people in the community.”

In early March, Bloomberg starts growing seeds in his basement under an

array of 25 grow lights. He then transfers the plants to his greenhouse, before they make their way outdoors to the deck. The whole process takes eight to 10 weeks. Although he attends markets in the Homewood and Frankfort areas, Bloomberg said coming to Joliet allows him to expand his customer base.

“My goal is to help people get their best garden ever,” he said.

Bloomberg recommends using organic fertilizers or pesticides – if you have to. He also is a proponent of natural mushroom manure compost.

On Saturday, he was selling “starter plants” of tomatoes, peppers and other vegetables. All plants were priced cheaper than $5 apiece. Bloomberg, who spends his days as a physical therapist, has always been around the garden.

In between shopping for sustainable and natural foods, attendees visited exhibits on display from organizations such as the Anti-Racism Committee, Citizens Against Ruining the Environment, National Hook-up of Black Women and Women for Faith and Justice.

Former students honor a real music man

Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – Joliet Central High School band director Mike Fiske had just excused his band after practice for the upcoming concert when something happened.

Sixty-five of his former students filed into the band room and onto the stage for one final surprise performance before Fiske retires after 39 years of teaching music education.

Fiske’s daughter, Laura Fiske, said the family wanted to honor her father, and because of the farewell concert on Sunday, many alumni were going to be in town, which gave Laura an idea.

“I started a Facebook page for all of the alumni and asked people who were in town if they wanted to rehearse one more time with my dad,” Laura said.

“We wanted to give him special time with his former students.”

Fiske was surprised as students from Morris Community High School and Central took to the stage to play one more time. He had each student stand up and tell which school and year they graduated and updates on their lives now.

Fiske had a smile from ear to ear, but as he spoke to the group, he struggled to get the words out, as emotions took over.

“I hope I played a small role in what you became. I preached the same gospel at Morris that I did at Central – I want all of you to be excellent musicians, have an excellent work ethic, and most important is the kind of people you become,” Fiske said. “What’s going on right now is great because you are my success at what I chose to do in my life.”

Fiske received a bachelors of music

from Bradley University, and a masters of music education from Indiana University School of Music. He took on various roles in music education in high schools across Illinois and Indiana, with his longest stints at Morris, 1986-2002, and Central, 2002 to present.

During the surprise rehearsal, Fiske directed the alumni band into songs from “The Music Man,” and played Cen-

tral’s schools song “March of the Steelman,” and Morris’ school song, “Morris Community High School Loyalty.”

Between sets students and Fiske told stories, with one being a prank at Morris in the ’80s.

“I rode my bike to school and kids said I looked like PeeWee Herman. So, I bought a Yugo, and one night at a football game, kids thought it would be funny to pick it up and move it to another parking lot,” Fiske recalled. “When they put it down, the kids thought they broke the axle and freaked out.”

Morris 1991 graduate Joe White said Fiske was not only a great music teacher, but someone who taught him about life.

“He inspired me to do my best. He’s the voice in the back of my head and I’ve learned so much from him,” White said.

“He’s a great man.”

Dustin Huckstep, Central class of 2004 said Fiske’s biggest attribute was his heart.

“He wasn’t just a teacher who taught music. He taught us how to be an adult.

He was a great mentor and teacher,” Huckstep said.

Fiske said although he loved work each day, he wants to go out on a high note and spend time with his wife and family, being less busy.

Church volunteers team with Kiwanis Club to clean up parks

Shaw Media Correspondent CHANNAHON – David and Kelly Jones of Shorewood, along with their son Matthew and five other volunteers, unloaded box after box of new picnic tables to a commons area.

They then sat in the warm sun Saturday to assemble for the upcoming swim season at Tomahawk Aquatic Center at the Channahon Park District.

“We used to use the parks more when our kids were younger, and you just don’t think about how the parks get to look nice. It feels good to get the parks clean and ready to go for the next group of kids,” Kelly Jones said.

On Saturday, more than 70 volunteers from Minooka and Channahon United Methodist Churches, St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Minooka Bible Church, Resurrection Lutheran Church and the newly formed Chanooka Kiwanis Club formed one cohesive group and partnered with the park district to clean up the parks for the busy summer months.

This was the third annual Fusion Volunteer Day, which began in 2014 when area church leaders and pastors wanted

to partner to minister to its community.

“The pastors recognized how much the parks mean to our community, and this would be a good way to serve,” Resurrection Lutheran Church Pastor Ben Ingelson said. “This event celebrates that every congregation has gifts to offer and when we combine those gifts it’s a good thing.”

Each group held its own registration, while the park district divided up into groups to work at Heritage Bluffs Golf Course to plant flowers and landscape, the pool to scrub and set up chairs, rake sand and build tables, and to Community Park to spread mulch.

“This group today donated about 300 hours of volunteer labor as we get our parks ready for the families for the summer. We appreciate the time, efforts and sweat from all of the volunteers today,” Channahon Park District Executive Director Chuck Szoke said.

Volunteers from 70 years to 4 were in the mix. Sisters Rebekah Kaney, 4, and Rachel Kaney, 7, of Channahon grabbed brushes and scrubbed down more than 20 lounge chairs themselves at the pool with smiles on their faces and water and soap all over their clothes.

“This is fun, because I like to clean at home. But, my favorite thing to do is the dishes and my mommy doesn’t let me do the dishes very often,” Rachel Kaney said.

Ingelson had his group at Community Park for mulch duty, and always brings his children out to help, which has given them a sense of accomplishment.

“This event is fun because it’s all in the spirit of helping one another and when we drive by the parks we have

cleaned, my 4-year-old says, ‘That’s where we helped,’ and gets excited,” Ingelson said.

After three hours of work, each crew trekked to Channahon United Methodist Church for a hot dog lunch sponsored by the St. Ann’s Catholic Church Knights of Columbus.

“This was a good day serving God and the community, Channahon United Methodist Church Pastor Steve Good said.

Minooka’s indoor percussion ensemble places 9th in world In April, Minooka Community High School’s indoor percussion ensemble placed ninth in the world during the Winter Guard International (WGI) World Finals in Dayton, Ohio.

Band Booster member Chris Kraft said that, going into the finals, the team had a lofty goal of at least placing.

The team, now in its sixth year, finished ninth out of 59 ensembles also participating. “[It’s] an extraordinary accomplishment for a program that’s only been around for six years,” Kraft said.

The indoor percussion ensemble is unique because there is no governing body in Illinois for the program, so there are only a few in the state. Andrew High School in Tinley Park is one of the other few, said Minooka band director Jake Coon.

In contrast, Indiana has about 250 indoor percussion ensembles. The program is popular in other states such as Ohio, California and others on the East Coast.

Coon is a 2001 Minooka high school graduate who played snare drum in the marching band during his high school days. He said he’s a percussionist all the way.

After graduation, Coon went on to get a bachelor’s degree in music and was the one who returned to bring the idea of indoor percussion to Minooka.

He now is working on his master’s degree in education. Under his leadership, the ensemble qualified for the WGI semifinals the past two years, as well as for the finals in this year.

Of the 33 Minooka students who play with the indoor percussion ensemble, half of them have had to take up a different instrument than their primary instrument to participate. Many instruments in marching band and concert band, for instance, don’t translate to indoor percussion.

Kayla McComb, a graduating Minooka senior, was a French horn player who took up the marimba for indoor percussion. She went on to be the ensemble’s section leader.

“I liked it so much, I’ve stayed with it for three years,” Saavedra said.

Saavedra tried out for indoor percussion on the advice of some upperclassmen when he was in his freshman year, after marching band’s season finished.

That same year was the one in which the ensemble first went to Dayton to compete in the national championships.

“It was a different experience from marching band,” he said. “It was nothing like I had done before.”

Indoor percussion is made of the same percussion instruments as marching band – drums, cymbals and metal and wooden xylophones, Coon said.

But because of advances in electronics, it now includes electronic synthesizers.

“In the past 10 years, electronics have gotten inseparable from indoor percussion,” Coon said.

At the world finals, Minooka competed in a large class that included not only ensembles from throughout the U.S., but also ensembles from Thailand and Japan, among other countries.

Coon said he is extremely proud of the ensemble’s accomplishments.

Minooka’s “sister” ensemble group from Andrew High School made it to the semifinals in seven years, so it meant a lot to him when Minooka made it to the semifinals the first two years it went to nationals.

“It doesn’t mean we are better, it’s just how good these kids are,” Coon said. “We are fiercely proud of these kids.”

because she believed in Robin. Pearlie helped any hurting person, she added.

“She was the blessing of my life,” Robin said.

Bonnie Winfrey, of Joliet, had a similar experience with Pearlie. After Bonnie’s mother died in 1979, Bonnie felt her purpose in life had died, too.

Pearlie advised Bonnie to pray, and that advice worked.

“She set me on the path of life,” Bonnie said. “She always had expectations of excellence of me, for me to get things done and to get things done well.”

Every “No, I can’t” from Bonnie was met with a “Yes, you can,” from Pearlie. After Pearlie died on March 21, at the age of 85, Bonnie said God has sent women into Bonnie’s life to mentor as Pearlie had done.

“I’m talking to them and being a part of their lives and mothering them,” Bonnie said. “That’s who [Pearlie] was to me.”

Pearlie started GED classes, as well several ministries at Mt. Zion. She received an honorary doctorate degree in 2013 for her ministerial work. She was a deaconess and a singer.

Beverly Thomas, of Peoria, the immediate past state president of the Baptist General State Convention of Illinois, Women’s Auxiliary, said Pearlie had told Beverly years ago that she would be president one day.

For Beverly, who met Pearlie through a fellowship between Mt. Zion Baptist Church and Beverly’s church – New Morning Star Baptist Church – Pearlie was a counselor, mentor and friend.

It’s rare to see in a world where people often vie in unhealthy ways for leadership positions, Beverly said.

“When you find someone who doesn’t mind sharing her gifts and talents with you and wants to see you succeed – that’s incredible,” Beverly said.

JOLIET – “If I can help somebody as I travel along, then my living shall not be in vain.”

These words, similar to those in the song, “If I Can Help Somebody,” were Pearlie Singleton’s motto, said Gloria Singleton, of Joliet, Pearlie’s daughter. For Pearlie, of Joliet – wife of the late Rev. Isaac Singleton, pastor of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Joliet – giving was a way of life.

“She saw the good in everyone,” Gloria said.

While president of the Baptist General State Convention of Illinois, Women’s Auxiliary, Pearlie started a retreat that was later named the Pearlie Beatrice Singleton Retreat.

Pearlie was also a recruiter for Joliet Junior College’s department of adult education and literacy.

J.D. Ross, former JJC president, said Pearlie was “a Christian in every sense of the word,” especially where the students were concerned.

“She wanted to see people improve themselves and live up to their potential,” J.D. said.

Brenda Roland, instruction coor-

dinator in the department of adult education and literacy, said Pearlie initiated the department’s graduation ceremony in 1984. Pearlie felt the students deserved the same cap and gown experience as other graduates, with their families in attendance.

But then, if a student needed it, Pearlie ensured they had it, Pearlie Brenda said: a listening Singleton ear, housing, clothing and even food.

“Any student could come into the office and talk with her if they needed something,” Brenda said. “More than just the education, they needed support and she provided that support for them.”

The Rev. Robin Riley, minister of women’s ministry at One Vision Worship Center in Joliet, said Pearlie – the best friend of Robin’s mother – became “Mom” after Robin’s own mother died in 1988. Robin said she’s a minster today because of Pearlie’s influence in her life.

Ex-Megadeth drummer Nick Menza dies Former Browns center, Tom DeLeone, dies at age 65

LOS ANGELES – Nick Menza, former drummer for the influential metal band Megadeth, died after collapsing on stage during a performance of his progressive jazz trio in Southern California, a family spokesman said Sunday.

Menza’s latest band OHM was three songs into a semi-regular set at a Los Angeles-area club Saturday night when the drummer collapsed, J. Marshall Craig told The Associated Press.

Friends and audience members rendered aid while paramedics were called.

The 51-year-old died at the club of a suspected massive heart attack, Craig said.

Menza was Megadeth’s longest-serving drummer, performing on five records over nine years, including 1990’s thrash metal landmark, “Rust In Peace.”

Dave Mustaine, co-founder of Megadeth, said on Twitter that he awoke at 4 a.m. to the news.

“Tell me this isn’t true,” Mustaine wrote.

Marty Friedman, the band’s guitarist from 1990 to 2000, wrote on Facebook that Menza was “a great and unique drummer” and “a trustworthy friend, a hilarious bandmate, as well as a very loving dad.”

After leaving Megadeth in 1998, Menza pursued an interest in jazz and became an accomplished woodworker. Menza’s autobiography, co-written by Craig, will detail the

drummer’s life in and out of music and is set for a July release.

He is survived by his mother and father, the jazz saxophonist Don Menza, and two sons.

CLEVELAND – Tom DeLeone, the tough-nosed center who made two Pro Bowls during 11 seasons with the Cleveland Browns, has died.

He was 65.

DeLeone was the center for Cleveland’s “Kardiac Kids” team led by quarterback Brian Sipe, who was voted the NFL’s MVP in 1980. DeLeone, who played at Ohio State, started 104 games for the Browns.

He was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2011. Good friend and former teammate Doug Dieken was informed Sunday that DeLeone passed away at his home in Park City, Utah.

“He was as feisty as they could be,” said Dieken, the Browns’ longtime radio analyst. “He played for Woody [Hayes] and was gung ho Ohio State.

He was just a great teammate. If you were going to get in a fight, you wanted Tom on your side.”

DeLeone was with the Browns from 1974-84 and although he lacked size, he made up for any physical deficiencies with speed and smarts.

CHAMPAIGN – High school seniors’ unease over the lack of state funding for Illinois universities is contributing to a drop in applications at a number of campuses, and the problem appears to primarily affect schools facing some of the toughest financial struggles.

A review of admissions data by The Associated Press found that applications for the 2016-2017 fall semester are down for at least four of the state’s 12 public university campuses – all of them smaller schools that don’t have as much money coming in from sources such as research grants and tuition and have smaller endowments .

At least three schools have seen an increase in applicants this year, including the University of Illinois’ flagship campus. Others did not provide complete numbers or declined to discuss their situations.

Some schools in neighboring states, meanwhile, say more Illinois students are applying.

Belleville resident Bryce Evans considered Eastern Illinois University, among other schools, but the Althoff Catholic High School senior is instead opting for Butler University, a private school in Indianapolis. He said one factor was the uncertainty over education

Illinois prisons chief to lead mental health overhaul

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois’ top corrections official said an overhaul has begun of prison mental health programs after a settlement in a class-action lawsuit.

Illinois Department of Corrections Director John Baldwin told The (Bloomington) Pantagraph he wants the state to be a national model. Baldwin said Gov. Bruce Rauner is committed to making funding available.

The agreement in a 2007 class-action lawsuit calls for new treatment units at the Logan, Pontiac and Dixon prisons as well as in Joliet. The cost has been estimated at $90 million, including staffing. U.S. District Judge Michael Mihm approved the settlement earlier this month.

Audit: Lottery broke law to get around budget impasse

BELLEVILLE – The state’s auditor general said the Illinois Lottery violated state finance law by prepaying $20 million to ensure it could participate in future multi-state lottery games even without a state budget.

The Belleville News-Democrat reported that the lottery made two $10 million payments on June 30, 2015, when it was clear lawmakers had failed to agree on a state budget that should have begun the next day.

The Lottery Department disputes the findings and denies any laws were broken.

QUINCY – The grandmother and uncle of a 7-year-old girl who died after a shooting in southwestern Illinois are in custody in connection with the incident.

The Quincy Herald-Whig reported authorities on Friday arrested 49-year-old Julie Roberts for obstruction of justice.

They arrested 32-year-old Daniel Roberts that day for endangering the life of child, possession of a weapon by a felon and obstruction of justice.

It was not immediately clear if either has an attorney. Their names were listed Sunday on the Adams County Jail inmate list.

Adams County Coroner James Keller said 7-year-old Melina Torres of Quincy died at a hospital as a result of a gunshot wound.

Naperville highway chief suing trustees over budget

NAPERVILLE – The Naperville Township highway commissioner is suing the township board to stop it from stripping $540,000 from his budget.

Stan Wojtasiak contends the board’s decision to slash his funding was an illegal act of retaliation for his rejection of an agreement under which the city of Naperville would have taken over maintenance of some township roadway.

Wojtasiak disputed the amount of money the city claimed would have been saved under the agreement.

The commissioner said he’ll be forced to lay off several employees if the budget cut takes effect. The suit filed in DuPage County Circuit Court names Naperville Township Supervisor Rachel Ossyra and two trustees as defendants.

Obama looks to strengthen Asian economic, security ties

The Associated Press HANOI, Vietnam – President Barack Obama’s mission in Vietnam and Japan is to build stronger economic and security ties with Asian-Pacific allies anxious about the rise of an increasingly muscular China.

That forward-looking message will be delivered even as he confronts the legacies of two wars long past – Vietnam and World War II – that still are fraught with emotion.

Obama’s first stop on his weeklong Asia trip was Vietnam, where he is the third sitting president to visit since the end of the war.

Four decades after the fall of Saigon, and two decades after President Bill Clinton restored relations with the nation, Obama is eager to upgrade relations with an emerging power whose rapidly expanding middle class beckons as a promising market for U.S. goods and an offset to China’s growing strength in the region.

Obama arrived in Hanoi late Sunday.

During his three-day stay in Vietnam, he’ll make the case for stronger commercial and security ties, including approval of the 12-nation trans-Pacific trade agreement that is stalled in Congress and facing strong opposition from the 2016 presidential candidates.

Vietnam also is hoping that Obama will use the visit to erase an irksome vestige of the war by lifting the U.S. partial embargo on selling arms to the country.

The idea is under consideration, but

concern about Vietnam’s human rights record could weigh against it.

In Japan, Obama will attend a summit of the Group of Seven industrialized nations, where the uncertain global economy will be a top concern of the G-7 leaders.

They’ll also grapple with a full array of world challenges, including the fight against the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria, the refugee crisis in Europe and Russian aggression. Also on the agenda will be Beijing’s assertive claims in the South China Sea that are causing tensions with other countries in the region.

While the summit isn’t expected to produce any breakthroughs, it gives leaders a rare opportunity to talk through the intractable difficulties they confront.

“Remember that leaders are lonely people,” said Michael Green, senior vice president for Asia at the private Center for Strategic and International Studies.

“These people don’t have much time to sit down with their peers to talk about common challenges.”

For all of that, the culminating moment of Obama’s trip will be a solemn visit to Hiroshima, where the U.S. dropped the atomic bomb that killed 140,000 people, ushering in the nuclear age seven decades ago. Another bomb killed 70,000 in Nagasaki three days later. It will be a moment to reflect on the devastating costs of war and to try to give new impetus to the call for a nuclear-free world that Obama issued seven years ago in his first year as president.

Experience as a newcomer also is so important, whether it’s the first time at the meet or doing a different event for the first time.

Juliana Stogsdill, a freshman from Plainfield North, finished 16th in the 3,200.

“This has been a great experience being here as a freshman,” she said. “I qualified in cross country and now in track. I learned a lot about racing this season in both sports, and I’m already looking forward to cross county.”

Morgan Bollinger, a Lockport junior, has run in Charleston before and placed in the 4x800 relay. This year, she qualified in the 3,200 and saw a big difference.

“Running an individual event is tough and really different,” she said.

“I have been used to running the relay with my teammates, but I’m really looking forward to getting a full summer of training in this year and making my senior year a special one, from cross country to track.”

Her Porters teammate, Drew Litynski, also a junior, started triple jumping this season. She finished 11th in the finals.

she said. “It was overwhelming, but an awesome opportunity. I just started the triple (jump) this year. I broke our 11-year-old school record, I learned so much about the event, then coming here and qualifying for finals is fantastic.”

The coaches also know the experience gained each year can translate to

bigger and better things in the future.

“We have such a young group of athletes,” Lockport coach Joe Kravitz said. “For them to come down here and get this experience, you can’t put a price on that.

“Drew (Litynski) has come so far this year, and our 4x200 relay capturing a sprint relay medal for the first

time since 2006 is incredible. This can only translate to bigger and better things in the future. The arrow is definitely pointing in the right direction.”

It’s all about what you make of it, especially for the talented group of underclassmen who are ready to come back to Charleston and step on that big blue track.

TRAVERSE CITY, Michigan – For a series that began with Traverse City right-hander Kramer Champlin throwing a no-hitter Friday night, the Joliet Slammers fared well over the weekend.

The Slammers (5-5) beat the Beach Bums, 6-5, in 10 innings Saturday night and followed that up with a 7-4 victory Sunday.

Champlin walked two and struck out 10 in his gem, which marked the first no-hitter in Traverse City history.

The Slammers recovered Saturday night, however, winning a seesaw battle with a run in the top of the 10th.

Carter Bell singled, and Melvin Rodriguez doubled before a wild pitch on a strikeout brought home the decisive run.

Joliet reliever Kevin McNorton allowed a run on three hits in the bottom of the ninth inning to produce a 5-all tie after the Slammers had gone ahead, 5-4, in the top of the inning on Marc Flores’ sacrifice fly.

five innings for the Slammers, allowing four earned runs on seven hits.

Boo Vasquez had two hits, including a home run, and drove in two runs. Bell and Rodriguez also chipped in two hits, and Alfredo Rodriguez had a hit and an RBI. In Sunday’s game, staff ace Spencer Medick was staked to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Charlie White walked, Phil Bates singled, and Alfredo Rodriguez walked to load the bases.

Vasquez walked with one out to force in a run, and Bell and Jake Gronsky both came through with two-run singles.

The Slammers made it 6-0 in the second on singles by Bates and Alfredo Rodriguez and an error. A walk to Vasquez, a single by Bell and Casey Fletcher’s single added an insurance run in the sixth.

He felt them in winning two years ago and again Sunday, when he ended up on the front row for next week’s 100th Indianapolis 500 – and with close friend James Hinchcliffe, who nearly was killed in an accident here last year, ending up on the pole for the race of races.

“I came into this month hoping we’d have a new story to talk about, and I think we did it,” Hinchcliffe said after running four laps at 230.760 mph to edge Josef Newgarden for the pole and move Hunter-Reay to the outside of the front row. “I’m honestly at a loss for words right now.”

Illinois Environmental Protection Agency Public Notice Proposed Renewal of the Clean Air Act Permit Program Permit Caterpillar Inc. in Joliet Caterpillar Inc. has requested that the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA) renew the Clean Air Act Permit Program (CAAPP) permit regulating air emissions from its facility located at 2200 Channahon Road in Joliet. The facility manufactures large mining and construction vehicles. Based on its review of the application, the Illinois EPA has made a preliminary determination that the application meets the standards for issuance and has prepared a draft permit for public review.

In addition to implementing Title V of the Act, CAAPP permits may contain “Title I Conditions,” i.e., conditions established under the permit programs for new and modified emission units, pursuant to Title I of the Act. The permit contains T1 conditions in sections 4.1.2, 4.2.2, 4.3.2 and 4.4.2 that were established in previously issued permits. This may or may not be a good thing. An accident in the middle of the pack in the early going could gather up one or more Coyne cars. But they may be able to work together to move forward through the pack.

When the green flag waves, the quartet will be about 225 yards behind Hinchcliffe. But for all four, even though only 33 cars tried to qualify for as many spots, qualifying was difficult.

Mann, the only female in the field, had the toughest job of all. She crashed

on Saturday, and the Coyne crew repaired her Honda-powered Dallara overnight, but in Sunday’s practice, something still wasn’t right. Back to the garage they went.

“We had more niggling stuff, and we couldn’t run at speed,” Mann said.

They figured it out, or enough of it to guarantee that her average speed of 226.006 mph was far from the slowest.

And it was ahead of Graham Rahal, whom some are touting as a potential winner.

“Now we can go back to having a great race car,” Mann said.

Mann is behind teammates Chaves, whose run was without incident, and Conor Daly – whose father, Derek, ran in the 500 and Formula 1, and whose stepfather, Doug Boles, is the president of the Speedway, and ahead of sprint car workhorse Bryan Clauson, whose goal this year focuses on quantity over quality. He wants to run in 200 races in 2016.

“This is the centerpiece of it,” Clauson said of his hectic schedule, which might include a local race or two this week. “But we’ve got a good group with Coyne, and I enjoy working with them.”

Workers compensation is 105 years old this year, a boon to many a worker and their family suddenly faced with financial disaster from a debilitating injury. And it was born of tragedy not far from home.

In Illinois, the impetus for work comp legislation came in 1909 after a disastrous mine fire in the tiny town of Cherry in north central Bureau County that killed 259 men and boys. Because the mine was the only major employer, the surviving population was made up largely of destitute widows and children. Almost all became dependent upon charity. Years later the owners were found guilty, but were fined just $20 each. The families successfully sued,

but received only $75 each in settlement.

Federal legislation for workplace safety standards followed.

Work comp laws are built on two basic tradeoffs: -- Employees give up their right to sue their employers in exchange for more modest but prompt and certain compensation.

-- Employers give up common law defenses in exchange for monetary limits on their liabilities.

Workers’ compensation was established as a no-fault system. The social behind it is that the cost of work-related injuries or illnesses should be part of the cost of an employer’s product or service. The employer is better able to bear these costs than the injured worker, because employers can purchase workers’ compensation insurance to cover their losses.

Joliet Slammers president and majority owner the National league MVP in 1987. The right-handed outfielder was an eighttime Gold Glove winner as well as a four-time Silver Slugger award winner. Dawson was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2010.

Dawson was drafted by the Montreal Expos in 1975 and played in only 186 minor league games until he became a part of the big-league club. After leaving Montreal, Dawson signed with the

Cubs. In his first season with the organization, he claimed the league MVP award and won another Gold Glove.

Silver Cross Field will open at 5:05 p.m. June 18 to fans for a 6:05 game against the Schaumburg Boomers.

at both first and third base.

White Sox beat Royals, Bumgarner throws gem, gets avoid first sweep of year RBI in Giants’ win over Cubs

CHICAGO – The White Sox didn’t completely break out of their offensive funk. But they scored just enough runs to win for the third time in 11 games.

Todd Frazier tied for the AL lead with his 13th home run, Melky Cabrera drove in two runs and the Sox beat the Kansas City Royals, 3-2, Sunday to avoid what would have been their first losing sweep this season.

“Hopefully, we can keep tacking on some more runs, because we still left a couple out there today that we could have easily gotten,” Frazier said.

“We’re still focused and determined to get those in.”

Carlos Rodon (2-4) allowed two runs and pitched into the seventh inning for his first victory since April 13.

“We didn’t want to get swept during that series,” Rodon said. “I came out and pitched the best I could and gave the team a chance to win. We did that today. All around good baseball.”

David Robertson overcame dizziness to get three outs for his 11th save in 13 chances for the AL Central leaders.

Lorenzo Cain and Paulo Orlando had two hits apiece for the World Series champions, who had won six of

their previous eight.

Yordano Ventura (4-3) gave up three runs and six hits in six innings for the Royals, who were trying for their first road series sweep. He is 3-0 in four home starts but 1-3 in five road games.

Rodon allowed eight hits and struck out four in his first time facing Kansas City.

“His confidence grows as he goes along, of just who he is and where he belongs and how he’s doing,” Sox manager Robin Ventura said.

Kansas City had four singles – including Orlando’s two-out RBI hit – to take the lead in the second. Orlando drove in three of the Royals’ eight runs in the series. The Associated Press SAN FRANCISCO – Madison Bumgarner pitched 72⁄3 dominant innings and doubled in a run in the fifth to lift the San Francisco Giants over the Cubs, 1-0, Sunday night.

The Giants won for the 11th time in 12 games and took two of three from a Cubs team with the best record in baseball.

Bumgarner (6-2) struck out six and allowed three hits and two walks while winning his fifth straight decision. The Giants have won each of the left-hander’s last six starts.

The Giants won despite a persistent problem hitting with runners in scoring position. They were 0 for 7 in that department and have 16 hits in their last 98 at-bats with runners in scoring position.

Bumgarner’s run-scoring double to left off Kyle Hendricks (2-4) followed Gregor Blanco’s leadoff walk.

Despite some confusion, a memorable All-Star Race

The Associated Press CONCORD N.C. – Say this about NASCAR’s confusing and chaotic Sprint All-Star Race: At least it was entertaining.

The latest running of the annual showcase by NASCAR was lambasted by drivers and fans for its new format, yet it still produced one of the most memorable all-star races in a very long time.

Sure, part of the entertainment factor came from perplexed drivers who struggled to understand the officiating after the first segment Saturday night. Their comments were comical and ultimately overshadowed racing that was far better than it was a year ago at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

The event is billed as a $1 million dash-for-cash, where drivers can throw caution to the wind and race simply for the pile of money at the finish line. The dramatics of that theory ceased long ago in part because the racing product deteriorated the varying formats backfired, and some drivers simply were going through the motions.

Over the last decade, the All-Star Race produced some singular memorable moments, but rarely has been a race to remember from start to finish. In that sense, Saturday night was special from the moment Matt Kenseth’s botched strategy in the first segment derailed the new format until

Joey Logano’s gripping late battle with Kyle Larson for the victory.

“The racing was significantly better than last year,” Logano said. “I remember this race last year, and I’d get trapped because all you can do is run the bottom. We saw a lot of side-by-side racing (Saturday night), saw a lot of (tires) fall off and, obviously, with so much strategy, a lot of us didn’t know what was going on because there was so much strategy. That’s what it promoted. It promoted a lot of racing, hard racing, and I thought it was great.”

The 113-lap race was formatted in part by ideas presented by Brad Keselowski, a new member on this year’s driver council. His proposals were shaped into three segments, the first of which required a pit stop under green.

24 Treat heartburn without prescription Dear Dr. K: I’ve had heartburn for years, and I began taking Prilosec as soon as it became available. It gives me relief, but I worry about taking any drug for a long time. Should I be worried?

Dear Reader: As I’ve often said, no drug is 100 percent safe. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take one if you need it. But you continually should weigh the risks and benefits.

Prilosec is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), a drug that reduces stomach acid.

We need stomach acid to help digest food, but if too much of it is produced, it can inflame and irritate the esophagus, causing heartburn. (Recurring heartburn is called gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD.) It also can cause ulcers in the stomach and small intestine.

PPIs are the most commonly prescribed drugs for acid reflux and heartburn. They include omeprazole (Prilosec), esomeprazole (Nexium), lansoprazole (Prevacid), pantroprazole (Protonix) and three other medicines. The four PPI drugs I’ve mentioned have other brand names in addition to the ones listed.

So, like you, many people take PPIs. Also like you, people often take PPIs every day for years. This makes sense if you have a chronic problem with stomach acid, but the occasional case of mild heartburn does not need to be treated with a PPI. For that kind of spot duty, antacid medicines such as Tums, Rolaids and Maalox likely will do the trick. They directly counteract acid in your stomach. So will drugs such as cimetidine (Tagamet), famotidine (Pepcid) and ranitidine (Zantac). Like the PPIs, these drugs cause your stomach to make less acid, but they work faster than PPIs. You also can tackle your heartburn with changes that don’t involve taking any medicine. Eat smaller meals and cut

As a long-term PPI user, you should consider the possible drug interactions and side effects of PPIs. They may decrease the effectiveness of clopidogrel (Plavix, others), a medication that helps prevent artery-clogging blood clots.

In addition, people taking PPIs seem to be more likely to get pneumonia than those who aren’t. That’s because some cases of pneumonia are caused when stomach contents are regurgitated up into the throat, and then drop down into the lungs. Since acid kills bacteria, stomach contents that are low in acid are more likely to contain bacteria.

Stomach acid also helps you absorb calcium in your diet. Theoretically, that might mean long-term use of PPIs would make you vulnerable to thin bones (osteopenia or osteoporosis). However, the evidence for that is weak. Experts do not recommend, for example, that people taking long-term PPIs get bone density tests or take calcium pills. However, I’d advise you to eat calcium-rich foods.

Even if you have a prescription for a PPI, you and your doctor should review the reasons for it periodically to make sure they’re still valid. If you do need that prescription – and many people do – it should be for the lowest effective dose.
