Health department urges County Board to help fill financial gap

JOLIET – Members of the Will County Board of Health approved a resolution Wednesday urging County Board members to fill the financial gap caused by the state’s budget crisis amid pending layoffs and program suspensions.

The Will County Board is set to vote Thursday during an emergency special meeting on whether to provide $426,873 in relief to the health department to keep afloat its adult behavioral health, crisis response and juvenile justice programs.

If no action is taken, dozens of union employees will be laid off, effective May 27, and thousands of clients will go without critical services. The resolution asks the County Board – which loaned the health department $3 million in April to stave off a cash flow problem – to defer $426,873 of that loan until fiscal 2017. The department intends to repay the loan in three installments once property tax revenues come in.

Zelko said.

Dave Delrose, a representative for union employees, asked that health board members consider a larger request to save additional programs and positions.

“I have to stand here and say as a representative of [union employees] that all the work that we do here is important. I think some of the employees feel that what they do is getting lost here, and they are not seen as valuable,” Delrose said.

The $426,873 loan would avoid 18 layoffs through Nov. 30, the end of the county’s fiscal year. A second proposal seeking $1.7 million to restore all positions and programs was presented to County Board members last week, but there was little

support for that.

Saying the department has fallen victim to Springfield’s budget crisis, Zelko told Delrose he “doesn’t see another way out of this,” suggesting the department has provided services without state support for far too long.

“But we were hopeful. We were trying to be optimistic and protective of the services that the community needs. The community will suffer. The department will suffer.

No one is ever going to look at the Health Department in the same way. … It’s never going to be the same,” Zelko said. “This is not something we choose to do lightly.”

Without action from the County Board or Illinois government, about 45 employees are expected to be laid off.

“We wouldn’t be here if [Illinois] had a budget,” Zelko said. “The uncertainty of whether or not, when there is a budget, we will still be able to recover monies from the state is questionable. … We need to be prudent. We can’t run ourselves into bankruptcy.”

Zelko said state grants, for years, have seriously underfunded programs.

“We can’t do everything for everybody.

We don’t have the money,” Zelko said.

Four charged after Joliet apartment standoff

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Four people have been charged after authorities say they barricaded themselves Tuesday afternoon in a Joliet apartment.

Officers were conducting a joint investigation with agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives when they witnessed a robbery, according to Police Chief Brian Benton.

Quantrel L. Jones, 25, of Joliet ran into an apartment in the 400 block of Market Street and refused to come out, Benton said. Police set up a perimeter and had SWAT officers standing by until Jones agreed to come out.

member, being an armed habitual criminal, obstructing justice and obstructing a police officer. He was booked into the Will County Jail.

Beck and Wade both were charged with obstructing a police officer, a misdemeanor, and released on bond.

Green, of Joliet, the last man to come out, also was charged with obstructing a police officer. Green was booked into the county jail for failing to appear in court on drug possession charges, according to police records.

According to Herald-News files, Jones was arrested in June 2010 after he ran into a stranger’s apartment while being chased by police and tried to hide a stolen handgun.

ELECTRONICS RECYCLING SITE REOPENS Will County residents eager to rid home of TVs, electronics

LOCKPORT – “Can I see your driver’s license?”

That’s the first thing Dean Olson, director of Will County’s Resource Recovery and Energy Division, asked anyone who showed up Tuesday morning at the Lockport Public Works Department to recycle old electronics.

Residents such as Robert Zydell of Joliet handed over their driver’s licenses to prove they were Will County residents as Olson gave them the OK to drive past the gates to drop off bulky television sets sitting in the back of their truck beds or SUVs. “It’s so hard to find a place to get rid of your old TVs now. I’ve been hanging onto these for a while,” Zydell said.

County to reopen a drop-off site, residents finally can dust off that old TV and be rid of it for good.

It’s been a slow start so far, but Olson said he expects droves of cars once the word gets out.

“Lockport’s been a great partner in this,” Olson said.

Electronics have been banned from landfills in Illinois since 2012. With service shortages statewide because of a flawed state law, strictly limiting Will County’s new, pared-down electronics recycling program to county residents only is critical to avoid poundage spilling from elsewhere in the region, officials have said.

The county’s new electronics recycling program is vastly different from previous years. Before, the 13 drop-off sites were somewhat of a free-for-all with few restrictions.

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Housing Authority of Joliet board has scheduled a special meeting for June 2 to pick a contractor to demolish Des Plaines Garden Homes.

Demolition of the housing project at Des Plaines and McDonough streets is the next step in the conversion of the site to a lower-density development to be called Water’s Edge. The site is near the Des Plaines River.

The HAJ board met Wednesday and was slated to vote on a contract with Carlson Brothers Inc. for the demolition.

But HAJ CEO Michael Simelton said staff decided to rebid the project because of discrepancies in the bid documents.

He said five companies responded to the initial bid offering.

Companies that bid are rated, and the price for the contract is negotiated after bids are submitted, he said.

Des Plaines Garden Homes will be taken down soon after the June 2 approval of a demolition company, Simelton said. Construction of Water’s Edge likely will start by mid-July, with the first units opening about 18 months later, he said.

Des Plaines Garden Homes is empty.

Residents began moving out in November.

Des Plaines Garden residents received federal Section 8 vouchers to live anywhere in the U.S. where the vouchers are accepted.

The residents, however, also will have first claim on any units at Water’s Edge when it opens.

“If we can’t fill them all, then there

would be open opportunities for people to apply,” Simelton said.

Openings are likely. No one moved back from Poole Garden when Liberty Meadow Estates opened. But some former Des Plaines Garden residents are considering moving back when Water’s Edge opens, Simelton said.

“There were maybe a half-dozen that showed an interest in coming back,” Simelton said.

Fairmont School District 89 superintendent resigns

fsarver@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – The superintendent of Fairmont School District 89 announced her resignation at Wednesday’s board meeting.

“I hereby resign,” said Sonya Whitaker, who started as superintendent in 2010.

She said her last day will be June 17.

No other board members responded to Whitaker’s announcement except for Sylvia Dotson.

“Why are you resigning?” Dotson asked.

“No comments,” Whitaker said.

Whitaker made her announcement after closed session at Wednesday’s meeting.

The board then went back into closed session, returned to open session

– Whitaker was not present – and adjourned. Board President Katie Ulmer said an interim superintendent will be chosen.

Since 2010, Whitaker oversaw new initiatives and improvements that led to a high state financial rating.

However, her tenure has been marked by controversy in the past two years when a former employee sued Whitaker and the board after the employee was fired.

The federal lawsuit case ended with a settlement where the board agreed to pay the former employee and her attorneys through the district’s insurer.

This year, the board has grown contentious with new members and a change in leadership. Most of the disputes have been between former board President Joseph Ryan – who is now vice president – and Katie Ulmer, who

became the president after the April 2015 elections.

Ryan has disagreed with other board members over freezing district-issued credit cards, the use of attorneys and legal billings, but board members have said the attorneys are needed.

He also accused the board of Open Meetings Act violations, but said Wednesday he withdrew his review request from the Illinois Attorney General’s Office because going any further would be “suing ourselves.”

Ryan took issue with legal billings yet again at Wednesday’s meeting when he talked about charges from the board’s new attorney, Scariano, Himes and Petrarca. The Chicago-based law firm replaced Canna and Canna, which resigned from the district in January.

“What I’m asking is that at least we direct or at least give some kind of

direction to our legal team to find out how much more we are going to have to spend here,” Ryan said.

Board member Richard Myers – who joined the board after Robert Loewe’s resignation in January – said ever since he’s been on the board, all he’s heard are complaints from board members.

He said with everything that is going on in the district, the board has needed legal advice from the board’s attorneys.

He asked Ryan to stay in closed session meetings – Ryan has at certain meetings stayed out of them – and speak with the attorneys, who had questions for him.

“So if you’re going to lodge a complaint against the lawyer and their charges, you ought to be man enough to stand up and face them and talk to [them],” Myers said.

Joliet Police Department recognizes officers for bravery

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – More than 50 sworn and civilian members of the Joliet Police Department were recognized Wednesday for outstanding performance and acts of bravery.

“The awards presented today reflect only a small sample of the true professionalism and high level of commitment our members display on a daily basis,” Chief Brian Benton told guests at the department luncheon at the Jacob Henry Mansion in Joliet. “This dedication to duty has helped make our department the absolute best police department in the country.”

Benton said he believes that effort is responsible for “the highest level of community support” while other departments have seen increased criticism “in the post-Ferguson era.”

“Law enforcement is a thankless job, but I promise there are plenty of guys like me who support what you do,” former Chicago Bears player Steve McMichael said in his keynote speech.

Wilmington police bust 3 women for heroin use

statements that the three women traveled to Cicero to purchase heroin, when one of them began to overdose.

An ambulance was called and emergency responders administered Narcan. The person was then taken to a hospital in the Cicero area, according to police reports.

When the person was released, the three women returned to the Wilmington area and were stopped by police, according to the news release.

Jerz is charged with three counts of drug possession and one count of bringing a controlled substance into a penal institution. Murphy and Cassineri are charged with one count each of drug possession and drug paraphernalia possession.

Wilmington Police Chief Phillip Arnold was not immediately available for comment Wednesday.

WILMINGTON – Wilmington police arrested three heroin users during a traffic stop over the weekend, later learning one had recently overdosed in the western Chicago suburbs and had to be revived using the antidote Narcan.

Amanda Cassineri, 21, of Wilmington; Misty Jerz, 20, of Coal City; and Kiley Murphy, Amanda 27, of Elwood, have been Cassineri booked into the Will County Jail. All face felony charges.

According to police, Jerz and Murphy appeared “very nervous” in the backseat of a vehicle Saturday night during the traffic stop on New River

Road, prompting Wilmington police to conduct a search.

Ten small bags containing suspected heroin – along with a used hypodermic needle and a second needle labeled Misty Jerz “Narcan” – were found in the vehicle, according to a police department news release.

Once at the Wilmington police station, additional contraband was located with the Kiley Murphy assistance of a female Joliet police officer. While being strip searched later at the Will County Jail, more heroin was found on Jerz, according to the news release.

Joliet museum’s summer music series to start Rooftop Summer Music Series

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet Area Historical Museum on Thursday night will open its summer music series, an event that’s grown in popularity as the museum has livened up the bands.

About 150 people are expected for opening night, usually the lightest attended of the Rooftop Summer Music Series that runs through Sept. 8. But that’s a lot more people than attended when the series opened seven years ago as primarily an educational offering.

On Thursday, the South Side Exiles, a Chicago band that plays classic rock of the 1970s – perhaps adding somewhat of a historical element – will perform.

Beer, wine and soft drinks will be served.

It’s a pretty good time, said Mike Brick, development director for the museum at 204 Ottawa St. in Joliet.

“People love the venue,” Brick said.

“They love the rooftop. From the band’s perspective, they love the venue, too.

The crowds are very appreciative.”

As the weather warms up, about 200 people come out to the museum’s rooftop for the acts, which are a variety of rock, soul and blues bands. It’s different from when it started with some folk music and an educational message.

“We would get about 30 or 40 [museum] members,” Brick said. “It was embarrassing. We thought, ‘We have to

Brick said about 40 percent of the crowd at any given performance is new to the museum, coming from as far away as Wisconsin, depending on who follows the band of the night.

“A bonus for the museum is that at every concert, we get two, five or six people who sign up as new members,” he said.

Members get a break on ticket prices, which are $10 for the general public and $8 for members and students with valid identification.

The museum is open during the concerts as well, so visitors can browse the exhibits during the performance or breaks.

Doors will open at 6:45 p.m. Thursday with the South Side Exiles performing at 7:30 p.m.

JOLIET – Two controversial items are on the Thursday agenda for the Joliet Zoning Board of Appeals.

The board has been asked to clarify its vote last month against a DriveTime used-car dealership before the City Council considers the project, which faced opposition from neighborhood groups.

The board also will consider a proposal for a cellphone monopole on Infantry Drive that was rejected by the council in 2015 amid neighborhood opposition.

The meeting will take place 2 p.m. at City Hall.

The City Council plans to vote June 6 on the proposal for a DriveTime dealership at 1395 N. Larkin Ave. A vote was tabled May 2 at DriveTime’s request amid opposition.

Councilman Larry Hug asked that the zoning board in the meantime clarify its vote recommending against a special use permit for the project.

Zoning Board Chairman Ed Hennessy said he is not sure the matter will be discussed, however.

“In the 40 years I’ve been on that board, I never saw that happen,” Hennessy said. “They’re questioning why we voted the way we did, which

Residents from nearby Golf View Estates and Inwood Terrace opposed the monopole.

The Joliet Columbian Club, which would lease the site, is hoping for a change of mind, said Bill Jenkins, president of the club. Jenkins said the tenant, SBA Towers, has not been able to negotiate alternative sites suggested by city staff.

The city planning staff is recommending the board deny the request, wanting SBA to locate the monopole at nearby Memorial Stadium or an adjacent high-rise building.

Police: Road rage leads to racial confrontation at Joliet gas station

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Police say a Crest Hill man displayed a handgun and shouted racial slurs during a road rage confrontation Tuesday near a Joliet gas station.

Joliet Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory said about 10:15 a.m. a 36-year-old woman was taking two 16-year-old girls to school when she noticed Anthony F. Demaio, 47, “driving recklessly” near Larkin Avenue and Jefferson Street in Joliet.

“He cut her off and pulled into the parking lot of the Delta Sonic [gas station]. For some reason, she pulled in after him and they started yelling at each other and racial epithets flew back and

forth,” Gregory said.

Demaio is white and the other driver is black.

“The victim said Demaio then pulled out a handgun and tapped it on the top of her car before he left,” Gregory said.

“She called police and officers arrived to stop him coming out of the car wash.”

Gregory said officers found a handgun and learned Demaio has a concealed-carry permit, but a background check also revealed two “road-rage incidents” reported to Crest Hill police.

Officers interviewed witnesses and Demaio was arrested on charges of aggravated assault and unlawful use of a weapon and released on bond. Gregory said Wednesday police have filed to have his concealed-carry permit revoked by the state.

Before, the county’s former vendor, Vintage Tech Recyclers, did all of the heavy lifting. Now, the county’s new vendor – Electronic Recyclers International – requires local governments to sort, shrink-wrap and load the items onto pallets and into semitrailers so an ERI employee can transport the electronics 225 miles back to the company’s Plainfield, Indiana, location for recycling.

Just a select number of pallets on Tuesday were stacked with new flatscreen LCD televisions, computers or other smaller electronics. Most were stacked with bulky, older Sony, Panasonic and other TV models made with cathode ray tube – a toxic material that’s extremely heavy and expensive to recycle.

Dave Hedges, a semitrailer driver with Electronic Recyclers International, said the issue of CRT glass isn’t going away anytime soon.

“There’s years worth of CRT glass

[TVs and monitors] in their basements, in their garages,” Hedges said.

Will County officials continue to work with state Rep. Emily McAsey, D-Lockport, on new state legislation to fix Illinois’ flawed electronics recycling law. Under the current state law, manufacturers that sell products in Illinois must recycle a certain weight of what is sold and pay to have those items collected and recycled.

The state law was designed so manufacturers picked up the tab, but local governments in recent months have lost the financial support of manufacturers in a low-priced market for recycled electronics and rising demand.

With Will County drop-off sites few and far between, municipalities such as Plainfield and Elwood have opted to contract with Waste Management for residential curbside pickup for electronics and hazardous waste materials.

“There really aren’t many other options. We’ve been getting a lot of calls for a long time,” Amy De Boni, spokeswoman for the village of Plainfield, said Tuesday.

gram allows residents to schedule the pickup of bagged electronics, paint and other products that can’t go in the garbage with a special materials kit provided by WM, according to the village.

WM personnel then routinely pick up the materials. The Elwood Village Board approved a similar service plan at its April 20 meeting, but a contract has yet to be signed. Under the plan, households will be charged $1.25 a month.

holds serviced by WM within Plainfield will be charged a monthly $1.15 fee on utility bills, with yearly rate increases to $1.29 over the life of the contract that expires Dec. 31, 2020. The stand-alone WM Curbside LLC contract coincides with WM’s main garbage pickup contract.

WM has received more than 140 inquiries since the contract went into effect May 1.

“The feedback so far is very good,” De Boni said.

SHAW MEDIA FRANKFORT – The annual Movies on the Green series in Frankfort has announced this year’s film selections.

The 13th season of Movies on the Green begins June 8 with the animated sequel, “Hotel Transylvania 2,” which is rated PG, according to a news release from the village.

NEW LENOX – Ten applicants are vying for a seat on the Lincoln-Way District 210 Board, which has been troubled by controversies this year, including a lawsuit.

Five of those who applied also did so when the Lincoln-Way board needed to fill two seats after the January resignations of former board President Kevin Molloy and board member Christopher McFadden.

Now, the board is seeking a new member after Arvid Johnson resigned in late April. The deadline for submission was May 9.

Applicants include: Thomas Coverick, John Hamstra, Aaron Janik, Jeffrey Ketchen, Joe Kirkeeng, Joseph Kosteck, Tom Magdziasz, Evan Porter, Adam Rusek and James Stevenson.

Ella Wilhelmina (Duhai) Boldt, 92, passed peacefully on May 17, 2016. She was born in Chicago on Sept. 16, 1923, to Peter and Katherine (Kauk) Duhai. She was united in marriage to Orman Boldt on Aug. 25, 1945, at St. John’s Evangelical Church in Naperville. They spent the next 63 years together before his passing in 2009.

Before beginning her life journey with Orman as his partner in farming, she worked at Kroehler Furniture Company. She was also a cook’s assistant at Valley View School for a number of years.

She was active in the community as a 4-H leader for 26 years in DeKalb and Will County.

Ella and Orman were awarded Citizens of the Year by the Waterman Business Association where they were members. She was a very active member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Naperville with the Walther League youth group. After moving to Waterman, she became a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and taught Sunday school for many years as well as being involved in various other church activities.

She was born on Aug. 20, 1947, in Joliet, to Earl and Cecile Riel Pumphrey. She married Eugene Cassani on Nov. 25, 1967, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Joliet. She worked for almost 40 years as a secretary for State Farm Insurance agents Ken Seidler and Jerry Hallahan. She belonged to both the bridge and bunco clubs. She enjoyed going to the casino boat. She also loved boating on the lake, spending time with her grandchildren and going to their sporting events.

Virginia R. Garvey, age 93, of Joliet, passed away peacefully, Saturday, May 14, 2016, at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center.

Born July 1, 1922, in Streator, she was the daughter of John and Mary (Harlacher) Neighbor. She graduated from St. Joseph School of Nursing in 1943 and retired as a certified registered nurse anesthetist from Associated Anesthesiologists of Joliet in 1990.

Virginia was an active member of St. Patrick Catholic Church serving as a greeter, money counter and extraordinary minister to the homebound of the parish. She was also a member of the Council of Catholic Women, Club 55, and the original Mothers Club of the parish.

She enjoyed volunteering for Joliet Area Community Hospice, Will Grundy Medical Clinic, St. Joseph Medical Center Pastoral Care Department and St. Joseph Medical Center Auxilary.

Virginia was a member of the Catholic Women’s League of Joliet, Ladies of the Elks Auxillary, Joliet Hospitality Club, Women of the Moose, and Joliet Area Community Hospice. In 2003, she received the Joliet Diocese Woman of the Year for St. Patrick’s Parish, the Silver Eagle award from Joliet Rotary Club, and the Joliet Area Community Hospice Health and Community Service Award from the United Way of Will County.

In her free time she enjoyed playing golf and bridge. She will be remembered as one who loved and served her fellow man as well as her family.

Surviving are her devoted son, John (Anne) Garvey of Lockport; twin grandchildren, Suzanne Marie (Zachery) Dieter of Joliet and John Thomas (Athena) Garvey Jr. of Lockport; one great-granddaughter, Riley Dieter; and many nieces and nephews.

SPRINGFIELD – Thousands of union supporters from across Illinois rallied in front of the state Capitol building Wednesday to protest Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s call for changes to collective bargaining policies.

The protesters called for an end to a nearly yearlong stalemate on a state budget, and for pay raises and a new contract for the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, the state’s largest union representing Illinois workers.

Amid budget deficit, Illinois mulls taxing sugary drinks

SPRINGFIELD – Lawmakers scrambling to find money to fix Illinois’ multibillion-dollar deficit are looking to sugary drinks as one potential source of revenue.

Taxing distributors of sodas, energy drinks and other sugary beverages was among the revenue-generating ideas a group of lawmakers proposed to Gov. Bruce Rauner and other legislative leaders last week to try to finally end a nearly yearlong impasse that’s left the state without a budget.

Illinois is facing a $5 billion-and-growing deficit. Lawmakers also are considering raising the state income tax from 3.75 percent to 4.85 percent and making budget cuts as part of an overall deal Rauner wants contingent on getting

Rauner has made curbing the power of unions one of his top priorities while in office, saying changes are needed to improve the state’s business climate and save money.

Rauner said the agreement “is a testament to what can be accomplished when both sides are willing to compromise and negotiate in good faith.”

He said the way to solve the problem is by implementing “pro-growth reforms,” which include changing the workers’ compensation system, freezing property taxes and tort reform.

Police find $1M of heroin in traffic stop of Chicago man

STRATFORD, Conn. – Connecticut State Police troopers have seized about 28 pounds of heroin worth an estimated $1 million after pulling over a Chicago man.

A state police spokeswoman said troopers were conducting traffic enforcement on Route 15 in Stratford on Tuesday when they pulled over a car for a moving violation.

After the troopers learned that narcotics might be in the vehicle, a drug-sniffing dog was called in to assist in the search and found the packaged heroin.

The driver, 50-year-old Jose Adorno, was charged with possession of heroin with intent to sell.

Intelligence: Hackers spying on campaigns

WASHINGTON – The United States sees evidence of hackers, possibly working for foreign governments, snooping on the presidential candidates, the nation’s intelligence chief said Wednesday. Government officials are assisting the campaigns to tighten security as the race for the White House intensifies.

The activity follows the pattern set in the last two presidential elections. Hacking was rampant in 2008, according to U.S. intelligence officials, and both President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney were targets of Chinese cyberattacks four years later. Nevertheless, cyber experts say Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton’s campaign networks aren’t secure enough to eliminate the risk.

“We’ve already had some indications” of hacking, James Clapper, director of national intelligence, said Wednesday at the Bipartisan Policy Center in Washington. He said the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security were helping educate the campaigns.

Of the attacks, Clapper predicted, “we’ll probably have more.”

The revelation comes after Clapper’s office released a document this month saying foreign intelligence services tracked the 2008 presidential election cycle “like no other.” The document was in a slide show used to warn incoming Obama administration officials that their new jobs could make them prey for spies.

Eight years ago, foreign intelligence services “met with campaign contacts and staff, used human source networks for policy insights, exploited technology to get otherwise sensitive data, engaged in perception management to influence policy,” it said. “This exceeded traditional lobbying and public diplomacy.”

Jonathan Lampe with InfoSec Institute, a private information security company in Chicago, said security hasn’t improved significantly since then.

In October, he evaluated the security of 16 candidates’ websites and wrote a pair of reports. Using the reconnaissance skills of a casual hacker, Lampe pulled full lists of site user names and technologies used on most sites. In some cases, he discovered which directories were accessible from the Internet and which weren’t. He learned the software products Clinton’s campaign used from a job posting soliciting a computer-wise staffer.

“Everybody was sitting with their pants down and by the time we looked at the sites in March, everybody had made fixes,” he said.

But countries are probably still snooping, he said: “The sites were open enough back in October that anyone who grabbed the information then and wanted to use it, could still use it now.”

Some threats are publicly known.

The international group of activists and hackers Anonymous has declared cyberwar on Donald Trump, urging supporters to take down his website and expose private information.

Heroism, courage in the face of death He wrote poetry using his blood as ink. Armando Valladares did this because he would not write what was demanded of him: “I’m with Fidel.”

Because Valladares refused to do this, he was imprisoned by the Castro regime for 22 years. For eight of those years, he was forced to sit naked in a cell – at times without water, without a toilet.

And yet, Valladares says he is “an ordinary man.” To sign onto Communism, would have been “spiritual suicide,” he says.

“My story is proof that a small act of defiance can mean everything for the friends of liberty. They did not keep me in jail for 22 years because my refusal to say three words meant nothing. In reality, those three words meant everything,” he declares.

Receiving the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty’s Canterbury Medal on May 12, Valladares said, “Even though my body was tortured my soul was free ... They couldn’t take away my conscience and my faith.”

Valladares sees kindred spirits in the religious order Little Sisters of the Poor, which is standing up to the government’s health-insurance mandate, which includes coverage for abortion, birth control and other things that the sisters and many Catholic groups see as violations of their religious beliefs.

The Little Sisters of the Poor, Valladares said, “are rich in that they live out their conscience, which no government bureaucrat can invade.”

Valladares “saluted” the sisters “for their seemingly small act of defiance.”

Valladares himself was saluted that same night by Elie Wiesel, the Nobel-winning author who survived a Nazi concentration camp.

Wiesel warned: It’s little things sometimes that begin the erosion of liberty. It’s the toleration of seemingly little encroachments, seemingly little evils that we look away from that opens the door to bigger ones.

Having recently spent time with Father Douglas Bazi, a Chaldean priest from Iraq whose flock was targeted by genocidal ISIS fighters, it was hard for me not to cry at these words. It was hard not to understand the possibility of history repeating itself.

We live in a culture of differences – different opinions, different understandings and different struggles.

Being in the room with Wiesel and Valladares puts things in perspective: We really have little right to despair. Despair, along with apathy and indifference – and anger – may be our worst enemies right about now.

The night of the Canterbury Medal ceremony, which memorializes Archbishop of Canterbury Thomas Becket and his own fatal struggle for religious liberty, Becket Fund president Bill Mumma said, “We bridge differences by celebrating courage.”

Courage, he said, “allows us to see our enemies as not strong, but brittle.”

People like Valladares, Wiesel and Father Bazi embody courage and radiate the calm that comes with bearing wisdom in your very body, from the scars of brutal reality that come from never buying into delusions that might make for a more comfortable life.

“Even though my body was in prison and being tortured, my soul was free and it flourished. My jailers took everything away from me, but they could not take away my conscience or my faith,” Valladares declared.

Conscience and faith – these things matter. They make for a culture and country where people make sacrifices for each other, where they stand up for each other in the face of persecution and suffering, where people talk about truth with love. Conscience and faith breed courage.

“Religious liberty is only secure when society values religion and treasures freedom,” Mumma said. Do we value and treasure these things?

It’s a question we answer by how we respond to encroachments big and small, who we celebrate and whether we tell the truth in the face of social pressure in favor of illusion and deception.

Bolingbrook beats Lockport to create tie for first or second in SWS Blue

dgoss@shawmedia.com BOLINGBROOK – Bolingbrook completed its rise in the SouthWest Suburban Blue baseball wars Wednesday afternoon, scoring five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to beat Lockport, 9-4, and spoil the Porters’ hopes of an undisputed league championship.

Instead, the Porters (18-12, 10-4) and Raiders (17-11, 10-4) either will tie for second or finish in a three-way tie with Sandburg for the championship.

The Eagles beat Stagg, 6-1, Wednesday

and can claim the title outright with a victory over the Chargers on Thursday afternoon. A Stagg victory would create the three-way tie.

“You have to tip your cap to Bolingbrook and their starting pitcher,” Lockport coach Andy Satunas said, referring to senior left-hander Joe Kmiec. “He did a real good job keeping us off balance.

“So, we either tie them (Raiders) for the championship or tie them for second. We will be happy with that.

They’re a very good team.”

Kmiec allowed a two-run home run to Stephen Hill in the first inning that

staked Lockport to a 2-0 lead and a two-run double to Nick Strysik in the sixth, following singles by Hill and Joe McGuire, that knocked out Kmiec and tied it, 4-4.

Otherwise, however, the Raiders’ lefty was in control. Over 51/3 innings, he allowed six hits and struck out eight, including four in succession in one stretch.

“This feels really good,” Kmiec said. “To be part of this team is great.

We really came together as a family.”

Kmiec called the outing “definitely one of my better ones,” and you would get no argument from the Porters, who

suffered through a nightmarish bottom of the sixth that ultimately was the difference.

“We had the bad inning when things got out of control, which we can’t let happen,” Satunas said. “But there were a lot of times before that where we had opportunities to put ourselves in better position, and we didn’t.

“We had three innings where we had very weak at-bats. We missed our location on some big first pitches, and they hit them hard.”

“We were just getting runners on base and having the 3-4-5 hole hitters come in and score them,” Flores said. “It looked like our hitters were swinging the bats very well with two strikes and two outs. We weren’t trying to do too much, simply trying to put the ball in play to get that runner across the plate. You want to make the defense and pitchers work a little harder.

“Everyone on our team is pretty laid-back and are good guys. It seems that they’re here to win and to try to go on to the next level. Everyone seems to have a good head on their shoulders and there’s no attitudes.

It’s a good squad and we’re having fun, and hopefully we can keep having fun and keep winning.”

On the mound, Liam O’Sullivan allowed just two hits while striking out six in five innings to collect the win in just his second start in two seasons.

Chris Rice, Quinn Pippin, Kevin Simmons and Kevin McNorton combined to allow two hits during the final four frames.

“He’s fairly new to professional baseball and that was his first win,

and I thought he threw the ball outstanding,” Isom said of O’Sullivan.

“He holds runners very well, throws strikes and has some velocity and movement on the baseball. He does a lot of things that can help us out. We thought we’d have him out of the pen, but now I think he can help us more as a starter.

“What I’ve seen from our pitching staff is above-average stuff,” Isom said. “We’ve got guys with good stuff, and they just have to use it in games. It has the makings of something good.”

Washington scored in the sixth inning when Bryan Haar smacked a two-run home run to left. But the Slammers answered with a run in the seventh when White led off with a double, was sacrificed by Melvin Rodriguez and came home on a sacrifice fly by Flores.

“We play very good defense, anchored by Alfredo at shortstop, and he made a heck of a play in a key situation,” Isom said. “That sets us apart from most teams and will help us win a lot of games. On the offensive side, I’ve seen guys grind out at-bats. And they continually want to work to get better every day, and that’s encouraging.”

the top of the sixth, Bolingbrook opened the bottom of the sixth with good atbats for walks by Dixon and Fowlkes.

Sandeen sacrificed and reached on a fielder’s choice, and Wade, the winning pitcher in relief, was nicked by a pitch to knock in the eventual winning run Kellen Quigley’s infield single plated a run, Lebron hit a sacrifice fly and reached on an error, Jordan Jenkins delivered a bad-hop single and Dixon later walked with the bases full for the final run.

“Jeremiah (Lebron) always gives us quality at-bats,” Thyer said. “He always hits the ball hard, and the rest of the lineup follows suit. (Cleanup man) Jordan Jackson has had a great year, and the bottom of the lineup has really been doing the job.”

So just like that, Bolingbrook walked away knowing it could do no worse than tie for second in the SWS Blue, which as Satunas said, “year in and year out is one of the best conferences in the state.”

JOLIET – Manager Jeff Isom talked with enthusiasm about the different hitting approach that the Joliet Slammers are using this season.

And that was understandable considering how well his squad executed at the plate during Wednesday’s Frontier League contest against Washington at Silver Cross Field.

Playing in front of a crowd of 4,051 that was boosted by large numbers of students who were there for a 10:05 a.m. game, the Slammers scored all but one of their runs after two men had been retired and three of those came in innings where there were none on with two outs.

That type of hitting, combined with a four-hit effort which was the work of five different pitchers, led the Slammers to a 5-2 win for their second straight victory over the Wild Things.

“Guys are buying into the philosophy that when they’re at the plate, they should try to put the next guy behind them in a better possible situation,” Isom said. “We’ve been successful in situations where we lay a bunt down and get a guy to third with

less than two outs, and that just helps everybody out in the long run. And Marc Flores took advantage of that today.

“I know it’s early and it’s a small sample of games, but what I’ve seen is that guys are rooting for each other and want to help everybody out.

Each of those guys want to put up great numbers, but they realize that they need to have other guys in front of them helping them out.”

Flores led the attack by going 2 for 2 with three RBI and two runs, while Charlie White and Boo Vasquez (RBI) had two hits each and Alfredo Rodriguez also scored twice.

The Slammers (3-3) moved in front for good in second inning when Flores and Vasquez led off with walks and were sacrificed along by Jake Gronsky. Following a popup, Carter Bell reached on an infield error to bring home the initial run.

An inning later, Joliet got a twoout rally going for another run. Rodriguez started things with a bunt single and then scored when Flores doubled to right. In the fifth, Rodriguez began another two-out rally going when he was hit by a pitch and stole second before scoring when Flores reached

Locke: Thompson’s character second to none Joliet Central athletic director Steve Locke has been busy this spring.

He had head coaching positions to fill in girls track, girls basketball and boys basketball. Peter Dobersztyn was approved as the girls track coach and Laura Brumfiel as the girls basketball coach at Tuesday night’s District Lawrence Thompson Jr. 204 board meeting. Both were coaching this school year in the programs they will lead next season.

For the boys basketball position alone, Locke said he had more than 30 candidates. Six received live interviews, and in the end, a familiar name, Lawrence Thompson Jr., stood out.

“Every one of the candidates who had live interviews would have been a solid choice,” Locke said. “But with Larry, there were several things.

First, his years of experience. Second, he is a community guy. Third, he is a Joliet East grad. Fourth, and most important, his character is second to none.”

Thompson coached boys basketball at Lockport for 33 years, the last 16 as the head coach. He was not allowed to continue in that role after the 2014-15

Last season, he coached the sophomore team at Joliet West and helped where he could with coach Nick DiForti’s varsity program. When Jeff Corcoran stepped aside as Joliet Central’s head coach after the season, he responded.

“I wanted to be a head coach again,” Thompson said. “I was kind of established on where I live, and I am more of a high school coach than a college guy. Plus, I really like what Jeff (Corcoran) has done with the program.”

Thompson is the first African-American head boys basketball coach at Central.

“Myself, I don’t think about that much,” he said. “But playing basketball in Joliet and being in the community for such a long time, it is a big deal. I am humbled by the opportunity.

“I have the opportunity to be the first one, but it’s for all the kids,

especially all the African-American males who can understand better that hope is always there. I take this as an honor. It’s a blessing.”

Locke met with Thompson for an hour and a half Wednesday morning and the Steelmen’s new coach did nothing but reinforce the wisdom of the choice.

“Larry made it perfectly clear that he is far from done coaching,” Locke said. “He still has the drive and he loves the kids in this community. He is anxious to do this.”

Thompson is getting to work on forming a staff and getting to know the kids in the program.

“I’m trying to get acclimated to the school,” he said. “It’s like when I went to West last year – I know the kids from afar and not personally yet. The kids were great at West, and I’m sure they will be at Central, too, except it’s different now because I’m the head coach instead of an assistant.”

The 2016-17 school year will mean a new world for all the Joliet Central and Joliet West coaches as the Steelmen and Tigers will leave the SouthWest Suburban Conference and compete in the Southwest Prairie.

Regardless of the league, however, the Central-West rivalry is special.

Thompson will attack the challenge of attempting to knock off Joliet West, which on paper might be one of the state’s best teams entering next season.

“That’s definitely a big-time secret,” Thompson laughed when asked how he plans to beat the team he helped coach this past season. “It’s going to be a tough task to do. But like they always say, you have your best chance to win when you are not expected to.”

As for the Tigers, Thompson said, “If they keep working together and get established in their roles, they could be in the top four or five teams in the state. They have talent and chemistry.”

What Thompson said he especially liked about Central last season “is the way the kids in the whole program carried themselves. I’m going to try to build on that. When they lost a game, they bounced right back. That’s a credit to Jeff (Corcoran) and his staff.”

There is a constant in the Joliet Central boys basketball program. The word character often has been used to describe Corcoran and Thompson throughout their careers.

It would be impossible to determine how many athletes have been members of the four programs that have won at least four-straight state titles in girls track and field.

But it is possible to tell how many have won medals for four straight years while competing on one of those championship teams, and that number is surprisingly quite small.

That’s why Asia Brown and Alexis Pierre-Antoine will join a rather exclusive club if they can help Lincoln-Way East to its fourth-consecutive championship this weekend in Charleston.

Pierre-Antoine and Brown would become just the fifth and sixth athletes in state history to earn a medal while on each of four girls track and field championship squads if they can help the Griffins to the title Saturday at Eastern Illinois University.

Of the four history makers, three competed for Evanston and one ran for Morgan Park, which both won four-straight titles. East St. Louis Lincoln, which won nine in a row, and Springfield Southeast, which won four straight, had no athletes who won medals on four title teams.

While Brown and Pierre-Antoine have combined for 17 medals and seven titles during the past three years, East has six other athletes who have claimed 16 medals and one title during its amazing three-year run of championships.

Brian Evans, who became the third Griffins coach to win a title, is hoping that this year’s squad has what it takes to give the school its ninth championship in its history.

“Throughout this season, we’ve seen two things,” Evans said. “One is a lot of maturity and growth since a lot of these kids have been around the state meet since their freshman, sophomore and junior year. But it’s very different now that they’re seniors and what their leadership role is. So there’s been a lot of growth and development in that part.

“Watching them mentor their younger teammates, I think the team has grown closer than any Lincoln-Way team that has gone to state.

They are cheering for each other in every event and are very committed to each of the event areas. So we’re very excited about the way that the team has come together and with the true family environment that they’ve created.”

BRAIDWOOD – Although it is the top-seed in its sub-sectional of the Class 2A Seneca Sectional, Reed-Custer’s baseball team was on the ropes Wednesday against Dwight.

The eighth-seeded Trojans grabbed an early 4-0 lead and hoped to advance to Saturday’s regional final against Wilmington or Bishop McNamara but the Comets rallied for a 5-4 win.

Derby winner Nyquist draws No. 3 post as Preakness favorite

BALTIMORE – Doug O’Neill couldn’t have done any better if he picked Nyquist’s post position himself.

After Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist landed the No. 3 post for the Preakness in a blind draw Wednesday, O’Neill looked like a man with a winning lottery ticket.

“The 3 is exactly what I wanted,” O’Neill said. “... We’re very optimistic that we’re going to break good and get into position.”

Unbeaten in eight races, Nyquist was made the overwhelming 3-5 favorite among 11 horses in Saturday’s race.

His selection as the best horse in the field was justified, according to

Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, who will saddle new shooter Collected.

“I’d probably be surprised if he didn’t win,” Baffert said about Nyquist. “He’s going to be tough to beat.”

Secretariat started from the 3-hole to win the 1973 Preakness, but California Chrome in 2014 was the only horse to win from third post since 1993.

Starting from the 13th post position in the Derby, Nyquist won the 20-horse race by 11/4 lengths over Exaggerator. Nyquist can expect far less traffic against a smaller field at the Preakness, which covers 13/16 miles at Pimlico Race Course.

“He’s a very mature horse that has speed away from the gate,” O’Neill said. “And he doesn’t like to lose.”

O’Neill enters the Preakness seeking to keep alive his hopes of winning the Triple Crown. A year ago, Amer-

ican Pharoah became the 12th Triple Crown winner and the first since Affirmed in 1978.

Exaggerator has the best odds behind Nyquist at 3-1. The horse, trained

by Keith Desormeaux, drew the fifth post position.

“Being that Nyquist is speed oriented, he’ll probably get pressed from the outside,” Desormeaux said. “It may make him go a little faster. That could be tactically advantageous for us.”

Exaggerator has finished behind Nyquist on four different occasions, but Desormeaux hopes things will be different on Saturday.

“We respect what he’s done,” Desormeaux said, “but we’re hopeful of turning the tables.”

Stradavari, at 8-1, was the third choice, as selected by Pimlico handi-

capper Keith Feustle.

Trainer Todd Pletcher, asked his reaction to having Stradavari starting outside at 11, said, “I’m happy with it. The good thing is you can kind of dictate things instead of them being dictated to you.”

The race is scheduled for around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. The field includes Lani, a Japanese-bred horse who finished ninth in the Derby, and eight new shooters.

Lani will start from the No. 6 post, which has produced 16 Preakness winners – most of any starting spot.

Altuve leads Astros to win over White Sox

The Associated Press CHICAGO – Jose Altuve had three hits and two runs batted in, Colby Rasmus and Jason Castro each had a solo home run and the Houston Astros beat the White Sox, 5-3, on Wednesday night despite the Sox turning their second triple play of the season.

Altuve went 3 for 4 with a walk and Castro went 2 for 3 with a walk.

Jose Abreu went 2 for 4 with two RBIs for the Sox, which have dropped a season-high four straight and six of seven overall.

Doug Fister (4-3) allowed three runs on nine hits in 61/3 innings to get the win. Luke Gregerson, who had blown three of his last four save chances, got the final three outs for his ninth save.

The Sox turned a 5-4-3 around-the-horn triple play in the eighth inning.

Mat Latos (5-1) suffered his first loss of the season, but the right-hander has been slumping for four straight starts During that stretch, Latos has allowed 18 runs in 202/3 innings for an earned run average of 7.84. Opponents are batting .396 (36-for-91) with 10 walks against him in those four starts.

Altuve led off the first inning with a single to right and George Springer followed with a walk to put runners on first and second. Correa, the next batter, gave Houston a 1-0 lead with a single to right, scoring Altuve.

Latos, however, was able to avert further damage and the Sox tied it in the bottom half of the inning on a run-scoring single by Jose Abreu. They might have had a big inning, but leadoff batter Adam Eaton was thrown out at second trying to stretch a single into a double.

The Astros reclaimed the lead in the second on a run-scoring ground out by Altuve. In the fourth, Altuve had a run-scoring single to

make it 3-1.

Rasmus and Castro added solo homers in the fifth and sixth to stretch the advantage to 5-1.

Meanwhile, Fister settled down after allowing the first four Sox batters to reach base. He retired nine straight batters at one point and didn’t allow another run until Melky Cabrera tripled in the sixth, scoring Todd Frazier from first base to make it 5-2.

Abreu had another run-scoring single in the seventh to trim the Houston lead to 5-3.

Astros rookie Tony Kemp doubled in his first major-league at-bat in the second inning.

Triple play: In the eighth inning, after Kemp and Altuve led off with walks, Springer hit a grounder near the third-base line. Todd Frazier fielded the ball and stepped on third before throwing to second baseman Brett Lawrie, who fired to first to complete the triple play.

The Sox also completed one against Texas on April 22 in the seventh inning, an unusual 9-3-2-6-2-5 triple play.

It’s the first time the Sox have had two triple plays in a season since 2006. The last major league team to have two in a season was Philadelphia in 2007.

Trainer’s room: White Sox: 3B Todd Frazier was back in the lineup after sitting out Tuesday’s game with flu-like symptoms. ... RHP Nate Jones, who left Tuesday’s game after being struck by a line drive on the inside of his left foot, was available on Wednesday.

‘The most liturgical church in the world’ Members of New Lenox chapel eager to share ancient worship with community

Shaw Media Correspondent NEW LENOX – St. Luke Orthodox Church, South Chapel, a branch of a Palos Hills church, opened in October 2015 at – appropriately – 112 Church St. in New Lenox, and members are eager to share their faith with visitors.

The Rev. Andrew Harrison of St. Luke’s – who prefers “father” to “reverend” – said the New Lenox chapel was opened because many members of the Palos Hills church lived in the New Lenox area.

Harrison said people often think of the Jewish faith when they hear “Orthodox,” although the church is Christian.

Others are taken aback with unfamiliar worship language, such as vespers, matins, liturgy and Pascha.

Harrison said vespers is the evening prayer; matins is the morning prayer; Divine Liturgy is the Sunday morning worship service; and Pascha is Easter.

Divine Liturgy is an ancient worship service, dating back to the fourth century, Harrison said, and although all his church’s services are chanted in English, they are very traditional.

“We are the most liturgical church in the world,” Harrison said. “We have lots of different services, and we have long services.”

For 1,000 years, the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church were one church, until they split in 1054 A.D., according to St. Luke’s website, www. stlukeorthodox.com.

The Orthodox Church’s history can be traced in unbroken continuity back to Christ and his 12 apostles, members believe.

Brian Duracka of New Lenox attended his first Orthodox service last year. A friend had joined an Orthodox church and told him about its beliefs.

Duracka began researching and studying.

“I felt there were things missing,” Duracka said of the Protestant denomination, in which he was raised, “and I wasn’t very happy with it.”

Duracka said the legitimacy of the history of the Orthodox Church is undeniable.

“I’d been taught that tradition was bad, basically,” Duracka said. “But you look at the Bible, and God is the same yesterday, today and forever. ...

Orthodox Church has remained the same for 2,000 years or so ... Others, they constantly morph into other things.”

Almost immediately, Duracka felt the Orthodox Church’s deep, thoughtful service and way of life, he said.

“Communion is more than just a symbol,” Duracka said. “Baptism is more than just a symbol. Orthodoxy focused more on the Communion [than his previous churches]. It’s a pretty serious thing with them, and I like that.

It has a much deeper meaning.”

Before, Duracka said, he was told to

pray and read the Bible when he was struggling with sin. Good advice, he said, but it never went further. Using prayer books and scheduling times for prayer have made a big difference in his life.

“I’m a lot more disciplined and a lot more cognizant of it,” he said.

Duracka urged people to visit the church. The art, music and prayers are all beautiful, he said.

“Keep an open mind,” he said.

“There’s a lot of history there. If the apostles did it, it must be a good thing.”

Duracka said certain elements will be unfamiliar but one can learn them.

“It takes a little more work than just going to church on Sunday,” he said.

Orthodox beliefs, Harrison said, are 99 percent the same as other Christian denominations: God revealed himself through Jesus; Jesus alone is the

savior of the world; Jesus died and was resurrected; there is eternal life; and there is the Holy Trinity – the Father, Son and Holy Ghost.

The difference? “[We believe] Protestants have taken away from the church,” Harrison said, “and Catholics have added to it.”

The Orthodox do not believe in a single head of the worldwide church, and they have a different understanding of being “saved,” Harrison said. “[We believe] you have to work for your salvation,” he said. “Christians must live the way Jesus Christ wants you to live. ... You must reach out to people who are suffering out there, or you’re not living like Christ wanted you to live. ... It’s essential.”

Ron Smith of Mokena attended a Methodist university, took a comparative religion class, and has read the Quran and the works of the Buddha.

“Everything I learned,” Smith said, “solidified my faith in the Orthodox Church.”

Does the Orthodox Church fulfill his spiritual needs? Smith said he believes fulfillment happens in the next life. It’s not his reason for going to church.

“I’m not looking to be fulfilled,” Smith said. “I’m looking to worship the creator, who is going to give me eternal life.”

JCA announces the Kiwanis Club April Student of the Month

JOLIET – Jessica Simon, daughter of Joseph and Diane Simon, has been named the Kiwanis Club Student of the Month at Joliet Catholic Academy.

Simon currently holds a 4.67 G.P.A. on a 5.0 scale.

Jessica She is a member of the Simon National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta (Math National Honor Society), an Illinois State Scholar, and a four-year member of the JCA Honors Program.

Simon, also a member of JCA girls volleyball’s back-to-back IHSA State Finals runner-ups, will attend Augustana

University in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on a volleyball scholarship. She will major in biology and hopes to attend graduate school to earn her doctorate in physical therapy.

He will attend Augustana College in Rock Island, where he will play football.

Kelley currently holds a 4.2 G.P.A. and is a memMichael ber of the National Honor Kelly III Society. He has been a four-year member of the JCA baseball program, a member of varsity club and student council, and an intramural basketball participant.

He volunteers at St. Raymond’s parish and with St. Ray’s baseball. He’s also volunteers at St Joe’s baseball, where he serves as an umpire. He plans to attend the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana where he will potentially major in business.

JOLIET – Luke Phelan, son of Jeffrey and Julie Phelan, has been named the Rotary Club Student of the Month for Joliet Catholic Academy.

Phelan holds a 3.85 G.P.A. and is a member Luke Phelan of JCA’s “A” Honor Roll.

A four-year member of the JCA football program, Phelan was a two-year starter and named to the East Suburban All-Conference team in 2015.

St. Mary Immaculate Parish holds May Crowning PLAINFIELD – St. Mary Immaculate Parish School hosted a May Crowning on May 10 where Mary was crowned by an honor guard.

Our Lady’s Honor Guard consists of eighth grade girls who are chosen by being invited to write an essay telling how Mary has influenced their life.

These essays are then read anonymously by the principal and assistant principal and the top essays are chosen.

During the crowning ceremony, the eighth graders then recited a pledge of dedication to Mary. In this pledge, they asked Mary to intercede for them and then they placed themselves in her loving hands.

Also in attendance were the First Communicants dressed in their First Communion outfits. The children sang songs dedicated to Mary, including “Hail Mary, Gentle Woman.” They also sang the Hail Mary.

JOLIET – St. Joseph Academy, downtown Joliet’s private independent school, is accepting registration now for its annual summer camp program, which will run from June 6 through July 29 at 310 N. Ottawa St., Joliet. The academic-based camp for children ages three through 14 features hands-on classes.

Camp for elementary and adolescent students includes enrichment classes in

art, drama, music, science, math, reading, creative writing, technology, gardening and cooking, as well as providing time for games and outdoor play. Preschoolers and kindergartners will participate in similar special classes geared to their age level.

Walking field trips to downtown locations, such as the Joliet Area Historical Museum, Joliet Public Library, and other local landmarks, are included. Campers usually bring their own lunches. However, special picnic days will also be scheduled.

Parents may register their students by the day, by the week, or for individual classes. There is a one-time registration fee of $25 a student or $40 for a family.

Campers can attend either half-day or full-day sessions.

The fee for a full day of camp (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) is $30 a day, or $150 a week; half-day camp is $20/day. Extended camp hours are available from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. for an additional $5 an hour. Sibling discounts are available.

• When will there be a treatment or a vaccine? There currently is no antiviral treatment for this virus. Although scientists are working hard on this, it is unlikely a proven treatment will be available for several years. The same probably is true for a vaccine. It is encouraging that a vaccine against a similar virus, dengue virus, was approved in April. Hopefully, the lessons learned in developing that vaccine will speed development of a vaccine for Zika virus.

• Why are we behind in dealing with this new virus? If you are regular readers of this column, you can predict my answer: because we have not invested enough in biomedical research and public health.

We could have been collecting data on thousands of women in South America when this virus spread there several years ago. We could have started work on antiviral treatments and vaccines. Instead, federal, state and city governments were spending their limited resources on more immediately urgent health issues. There weren’t the funds to try to get ahead of this new virus.

Dear Readers: In yesterday’s column, I discussed new evidence the Zika virus probably causes a brain birth defect that leads to small heads and brains (microcephaly). This can occur when a pregnant woman is infected early in pregnancy, when the baby’s brain is developing.

The virus is carried inside certain mosquitoes called Aedes mosquitoes, which bite and transmit the virus to humans.

Aedes mosquitoes already have spread north from South America and the Caribbean into the southern United States. This obviously is a concern for any woman who is contemplating getting pregnant.

We don’t know, however, how large this risk is: • How often will pregnant women who are infected early in pregnancy have babies with microcephaly? One small study from French Polynesia estimates the risk may be as low as 1 percent. However, in my opinion, that estimate is not very solid.

• What is the likelihood the virus will reach the U.S. and Canada? Aedes mosquitoes now are in about 30 southern U.S. states and in Hawaii. Global warming is encouraging the mosquitoes to travel north.

However, it is hard to predict how rapidly that will happen.

Even though Aedes mosquitoes already are in the U.S., the virus so far has not been found in U.S. mosquitoes. The problem is U.S. citizens often travel south.

Some have become infected with the virus, usually without knowing it, and then have returned to the U.S. carrying the virus. If they are bitten by U.S. Aedes mosquitoes, the virus could be transmitted to those mosquitoes. And those mosquitoes then could spread it to other people in the United States. And then Zika infections could take off in the U.S., just as they have in South America over the past several years.

Final Notice and Public Explanation of a Proposed Activity in a 100-Year Floodplain Will County Land Use Department, Community Development Division 58 E. Clinton St., Suite 100, Joliet, IL 60432 815-774-7890 To: All interested Agencies, Groups and Individuals This is to give notice that the Will County Land Use Department, Community Development Division has conducted an evaluation as required

by Executive Order 11988, in accordance with HUD regulations at 24 CFR 55.20 Subpart C Procedures for Making Determinations on Floodplain Management. The activity is funded under the US Department of Housing and Urban Development?s Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, grant #B-12-UC-17-0006. The proposed project is located at 414 Patterson Road in unincorporated Will County, Illinois. The action involves demolition and removal of a vacant and dilapidated single-family home on a 316.5 square foot parcel located in the 100-year floodplain.

Will County has considered the following alternatives and mitigation measures to be taken to minimize adverse impacts and to restore and preserve natural and beneficial values: this dilapidated and deteriorating structure will be demolished and removed from the floodplain thereby removing the hazards associated with it; further, the removal of this structure from the floodplain will remove an obstruction from the natural flow through the floodplain. The location of the structure determines that the project must take place on that site.

Will County has reevaluated the alternatives to building in the floodplain and has determined that it has no practicable alternative. Environmental files that document compliance with steps 3 through 6 of Executive Order 11988 are available for public inspection, review and copying upon request at the times and location delineated in the last paragraph of this notice for receipt of comments. This activity will have no significant impact on the environment for the following reasons: Removal of this deteriorating, dilapidated structure will have a positive impact on the environment by removing the hazards associated with its decay and threat of collapse. Removal of the structure from the floodplain will restore the land?s natural ability to protect the surrounding area from flooding. During the demolition, the permitting process will require the contractor to protect the floodplain from harm.

There are three primary purposes for this notice. First, people who may be affected by activities in floodplains and those who have an interest in the protection of the natural environment should be given an opportunity to express their concerns and provide information about these areas.

Second, an adequate public notice program can be an important public educational tool. The dissemination of information and request for public comment about floodplains can facilitate and enhance Federal efforts to reduce the risks and impacts associated with the occupancy and modification of these special areas. Third, as a matter of fairness, when the Federal government determines it will participate in actions taking place in floodplains, it must inform those who may be put at greater or continued risk.

Written comments must be received by the Will County Land Use Department, Community Development Division, Attention: Larry Walsh, County Executive at the following address on or before May 27, 2016.
