In October 1871, the Great Chicago Fire ravaged the city. While the fire was devastating for Chicago and its city center, it helped launch a building boom that changed the way architects approached designing new and taller buildings in the late nineteenth century.

The architectural experimentation and advancement also put Chicago at the forefront of progress. The Rookery building is one of the best examples of the resulting build out of commercial architecture after the fire. The Rookery Building is the sole surviving Burnham and Root commercial building from the 1880s and 1890s and is best known for its structural and architectural design.

Completed in 1888, the building was revolutionary in several respects. Its architecture was distinctive and much more ornate than had been seen in commercial buildings at the time. The Rookery also was unique and its construction successfully implemented many new and breakthrough technologies for the late nineteenth century – including a rail-grillage foundation, a metal skeleton, elevators, fireproofing, electrical lighting and plate glass.

The interior center of the building is a light court with magnificent ironwork in its ceiling, railing and stairways. Marble, polished white granite, and glass all help to contribute to the openness and accessibility of the interior. Located on the southeast corner of LaSalle and Adams Streets, the eleven-story building is one of the earliest examples of metal framing with masonry walls on such a large scale. Constructed with red granite and pressed brick with terra-cotta detailing and ornamentation, the exterior is very imposing – particularly the massive stone arch that hovers over the LaSalle Street entrance.

In 1905, Frank Lloyd Wright was commissioned to update the design and plan of the light court and lobbies. Wright removed most of Root’s elaborate ironwork and ornamentation and replaced it with more simple, yet strong, geometric patterns based on the railings of Root’s oriel stairs.

OLD POSTCARD IMAGES SOUGHT FOR PUBLICATION David Belden is a history teacher at Minooka Community High School and currently is publishing local postcard books with Arcadia Publishing in his Local History classes. He and his students are looking for old Joliet photos and postcards, and images from Joliet’s parks, for a new publication.

Wright updated the mezzanine stair in white marble, replaced the light fixtures, and added massive white marble planters at the foot of the grand staircase. Wright also covered nearly all areas in the lobbies with incised and gilded marble. The incising was copied from Root’s original work.

In 1931, William Drummond (a student of Wright’s) was hired to update the aging structure. He renovated the lobby, elevators and some interior office spaces.

Drummond’s work helped to modernize the building and bring in an Art Deco style that was popular at the time.

L. Thomas Baldwin III purchased the Rookery in 1988 and set out to completely restore the popular landmark building.

The restoration, which was completed in 1992, combined the original architecture of Root and Wright, and added a 12th floor to the top of the building.

The Rookery Building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. Two years later, the city of Chicago designated the Rookery Building as an official Chicago landmark. Today, the Rookery Building is considered the oldest standing high-rise in Chicago.

Joliet gymnasts do push-ups to benefit military families

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Some battalions might have done fewer push-ups than the girls at Aspire Gymnastics Academy in Joliet did Saturday. It’s likely Mikayla Conwell, 9, could take on a company by herself.

Several dozen gymnasts, ages 6 to 18, took the Push-Up Challenge to raise funds to benefit Operation Homefront, a nonprofit that supports military families.

Academy owner Nick Becker; his wife, Erin Becker; and Casey Charlebois conceived the event after a social media post of gymnasts doing handstands in front of an American flag got a large response, Becker said.

“We decided Operation Homefront could benefit and had everyone get sponsors on how many push-ups [they] can do,” Becker said. “It’s a way to challenge yourself and the younger girls can see a way they can make a difference.”

When members of the military are away, Operation Homefront provides financial help to their families for unforeseen expenses.

“If you’re deployed and the refrigerator dies, we can give assistance,” Regional Director Darcy Clardy said.

“We also set up backpacks for military kids to help with back-to-school expenses and holiday meals.”

With flag streamers on the uneven bars and bunting decorating the pommel horse, students stretched, danced and batted red, white and blue balloons in the air before Riley Traverso sang the national anthem.

The 6-, 7- and 8-year-olds went first – doing 25 push-ups, taking a 10-second break to “roll out their wrists” and going again.

Before the challenge, Becker promised to do one more push-up than the winner. Within the first minute, he had his work cut out for him.

Most girls got to 100, and some hit 150 and 200.

“These girls don’t have any weight on them,” said Hanna Bergeson, 17, who was spotting the younger students. “I’m going to go for maybe 100.

I’ve no chance to do that many.”

Bergeson, however, did win a debate last week in her history class at Joliet Catholic Academy with her triceps. Although her explanation of Warren G. Harding’s policies was

Bella Ristau, 7, and Sophia Burchiaga, 8, had parents’ jaws dropping as they dropped No. 300. Sophia added one more for good measure and ran to hug her mother, Stephanie Burchiaga.

“That was my first time doing that many,” Sophia said. “It was fun. I hadn’t practiced, I just kept on going.”

“I already pledged, but I think I’m going to have to get out the checkbook again,” Stephanie said. “Me and my

husband were both in the military, so this is pretty awesome.”

Church to revamp unused lot as play area Recreational field will be dedicated to deceased alumni

The Rev. Ron Neitzke said the parking lot southeast of the school has not been used in years and instead has been a “catchall for debris.”

“It hasn’t been maintained in years.

It’s just an eyesore,” Neitzke said.

Neitzke and St. Mary Nativity Church are hoping to soon convert a nearby parking lot into a play area in memory of alumni.

Rauner running out of time to get budget reforms he wants

Summer’s here; remember to bike safely May is designated as National Bicycle Safety Month by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Many areas have great bicycle paths that help keep cyclists safe, particularly children, but cyclists are out and about on the roads daily now that the weather is getting nicer.

The purpose of Bicycle Safety Month is to remind everyone – cyclists, kids, vehicle drivers – that we all need to work together to make sure accidents don’t happen.

And that means knowing what the rules are.

According to the NHTSA, bicyclists on the roads should always travel in the same direction as traffic; obey all traffic signs, signals and lane markings; be predictable by riding in a straight line – drivers, are used to the patterns of other drivers, so don’t weave in and out of traffic; and use hand signals at every lane change or turn.

Other safety measures they recommend are to wear bright colors to be

Vehicle drivers also have to do their part by respecting designated bike lanes; allowing at least 3 feet of clearance when passing a bicyclist; yielding to cyclists at intersections and as directed by signs and signals such as bike crossing signs; being alert for cyclists when making turns; watching for cyclists when opening car doors on streets; and, of course, never driving distracted or impaired.

During 2012, 726 bicyclists were killed and 49,000 were injured, according to NHTSA statistics, an increase of 6 percent from 2011.

We see a lot of bicycle groups passing through the back roads of Channa-



hon and Minooka, so knowing the rules and how to react when approaching them is important. We all have to share the road.

The same rules apply when riding on a bike path, said Minooka Community Policing Officer Denis Tatgenhorst. Cyclists have to stay to their right and yield to anyone they are approaching. Before passing, give an audible signal whether it’s a bell or verbal notice, and only pass when it’s safe.

The biggest thing when bicycling is to wear a helmet, Tatgenhorst said.

Getting thrown from a bike to the pavement, or worse, out into the street, can be fatal.

Tatgenhorst recommends that people personalize their helmets, make it unique so that you’ll be sure to wear it.

A helmet is of no value if it’s not on your head.

Every year, the Minooka Police Department and Minooka Fire Protection District sponsor a bicycle safety rodeo for kids in kindergarten through fifth grade.

noon June 11 in the Minooka Police Department parking lot. It’s typically held during Bicycle Safety Month, but there were scheduling conflicts this year.

Kids will have their bikes checked for safety, helmets checked for good fit, learn about safety and hand signals, and then go through an obstacle course to test their riding skills, balance and safety knowledge.

Trophies are awarded by age groups for the three top participants, and everyone goes home with a bag of goodies.

Kids who attend have to bring a parent or guardian along and wear closed toe shoes for safety – no sandals or flip flops. If a child does not have a helmet or a proper fitting one, a helmet will be donated to the child.

This is a good opportunity for kids to learn bike safety early to set them up for a lifetime of safe biking. And it’s a lot of fun, too.

Former Joliet resident Kathy Kaiser, of Glenview, had a unique perspective of Dick, having been first his client and later his colleague. Kathy said she and her husband had seen Dick many years ago for marriage counseling and found Dick’s sessions extremely helpful.

Several years later as parents of young children, Kathy and her husband joined Dick and Annette in Parent Effectiveness Training and found, once again, that Dick, along with Annette, was a tremendous resource of knowledge and experience.

“He had a way of affirming people he was with, a very accepting non-judgmental person – and he had the warmest smile and the most wonderful laugh,” Kathy said.

Thirty years ago, Kathy returned to school to pursue a counseling degree and begin a private practice in Joliet, eventually sharing office space with Dick at the corner of Jefferson Street and Raynor Avenue.

“He was always looking for new

ways to help people get through difficulties or for personal enrichment and growth,” Kathy said. “He was very supportive of meditation and I know he helped a lot of people integrate that into their lives. He did tai chi – Annette said he was doing it in Joliet for 10 years before it got here from the west and east coasts. He was always open to looking for ways to expand his knowledge and the kinds of gifts he could give.”

Dick never wasted an opportunity to help.

At the end of his life, when he had Alzheimer’s disease, Annette said he participated in a study through Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center in Chicago. This meant periodic PET and CT scans, as well as two spinal taps.

Then after Dick’s death on Nov. 22 at age 78, his brain was donated for Alzheimer’s research, also at Dick’s request.

“He had said, ‘Well, I’m going to be dead anyway, so what does it matter?’ ” Annette said.

JOLIET – As a school guidance counselor, Joliet psychologist Richard “Dick” Dobbs often shared his success story to failing students.

It started with him attending college on a scholarship – and then flunking out and losing the scholarship because he partied too much, said Annette Dobbs of Joliet, Dick’s wife.

So Dick – also known as “Butch” – joined the U.S. Marines Corps and Richard returned a changed Dobbs man. He enrolled in Joliet Junior College – where he met Annette – and continued with his education until he earned a doctorate degree in counseling psychology from Indiana University.

“He’d tell kids, ‘Look, you can do this,’” Annette said. “I fell on my face and eventually got a doctorate degree, but if you had said that to me at 18, I would never have believed you.”

Throughout his career, the former Joliet Township High School multisport athlete from the class of 1955

held many teaching, counseling and administrative positions at the high school, junior college and university levels.

Dick had a private counseling practice for 25 years and returned to JTHS for 10 years before retiring.

He coached youth sports, trained volunteers for the Crisis Line of Will and Grundy County and served for many years as a member of the JTHS archives committee.

The Rev. Ray Lescher, pastor at Sacred Heart Parish in Joliet where Dick was a longtime member, said Dick was responsible, dependable, respectful of everybody, and he had a great sense of humor.

“He was everything you wanted to see in a Christian man,” Lescher said.

“He walked the walk and he talked the talk. He helped a ton of kids over at Joliet Central High School. His door was always open to everybody and his heart was also open to everybody.”

JTHS Superintendent Cheryl McCarthy agreed. She said Dick was so compassionate and good at his craft, he could relate to students and staff alike.

“He was someone I could go to for advice or wisdom,” Cheryl said. “He

ROBERT JAMES ARLING Age 80, Robert J. “Les” Arling, a lifetime resident of Joliet, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 14, 2016.

He was a longtime member of St. Jude Catholic Church and served many years as president of the St. Vincent DePaul food pantry. He coached basketball, baseball and softball and was an avid golfer. Les served in the Army during the Korean War. Survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Jeanette (Clancy) Arling; his children Michele Arling and Steve (Lisa) Arling of Joliet, Paul (Jeanette) Arling of Irvine, CA, and Lori (Patrick) Broncato of Wheaton. CARL BENJAMIN BUSH Age 83, of Minooka, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, May 11, 2016, at Joliet Area Community Hospice Home.

Born May 24, 1932, in Springfield, he was the son of Carl Benjamin and Hazel (Parnell) Bush. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was the recipient of the Purple Heart award.

Carl was a proud veteran and patriot and was active in numerous veterans organizations including Minooka American Legion Post 1188, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6049 in

Morris, VFW Post 3629 in Ketchikan, AK, and Marne American Legion Post 13 in Plainfield, where he served as Past Commander. A 32 Degree Mason, he was a 50-year member of Lodge 536 A.F. and A.M., Plainfield, and Ansar Temple Shriners, Springfield. He was also an avid supporter of the Second Amendment and a member of Newark Sports Club.

The primary focus of Carl’s activities since 1964 was serving the Boy Scouts of America as a Scout Leader with Troop 82 from Plainfield, and in various other leadership capacities with Boy Scouts Rainbow Council. He was a recipient of the Order of the Arrow and the Silver Beaver Award. He received a commendation by President Gerald Ford for his efforts in organizing and completing the 200-mile Bicentennial Walk in 1976, beginning in Springfield, IL, and ending in Bicentennial Park in Joliet.

Carl and his beloved wife, Barbara, enjoyed a long, happy and healthy retirement and traveling for 18 years serving as volunteers in national parks for the National Park Service and U.S. Forestry throughout the country, particularly in Alaska and Arizona. Carl and Barbara graduated from the Minooka Citizens Police Academy proudly serving with the Minooka Police Department for several years. Honored in 2013 by the Minooka Police Department for their many hours of volunteering, Carl was asked why they spent so much time volunteering over the years.

He responded: “We are citizens of the community. That’s how Barbara and I look at it.”

Surviving are his loving wife of 63 years, Barbara Lee (Little) Bush; six children, Carla Cambruzzi (Perry, deceased; Mark Donnelly, deceased) of Pahrump, NV, Diana (Len) Burkart of Joliet, Michael (Jill) Bush of Champaign, David (Melissa) Bush of Morris, Sally (Joe) Pollard of Channahon, and Daniel (Sarah) Bush of Minooka; 14 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; brother John (Diane) Bush and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved parents-in-law, infant sister, brother, Jerry Bush, and two sons-in-law.

Lee Campbell, age 59, of Plainfield, passed away unexpectedly and way too soon on Tuesday, May 10, 2016, at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center Emergency Room.

Born March 14, 1957, in Chicago, he was the son of Leroy and Donna (Burgchardt) Campbell, Sr. He was an honorably discharged veteran of the U.S. Navy.

Lee was a proud and accomplished member of Mechanics’ Local 701, and developed many lifelong friendships while employed at Penske, Alpha Baking, and most recently at USF Holland Inc. He also previously was the owner of Enterprise Motors and worked as a reposessor and a semi driver for Mopar.

Lee was an outstanding, devoted and accomplished father who was a knight in shining armor when it came to his princesses.

He will be remembered as an outgoing and fearless adventurist who had a great personality and a fun, sometimes goofy, sense of humor.

A great conversationalist, he always had stories to share and was nicknamed “Campfire Campbell.” Lee was also a Corvette enthusiast.

He was preceded in death by his son, Brandon Lee Campbell; and his parents.

Surviving are his wife, Debra Jacksa-Campbell; his children, Jacob Ryan Campbell, Misty Marie Campbell, Melanie Campbell, Connie Weese, Scott ( Elizabeth ) Jacksa, and Brad Jacksa; grandchildren, Adrian Andrew Aleman, Swayze Mae Campbell, Maleya Margaret Campbell, Austin Steven, Annie Mae Baron, Madison and Tyler Jacksa, and soon to be born Elijah Brandon Lee Aleman; his loyal and loving furry friend, Peyton; and best friend ever, Bobby Delrose.

SAO PAULO – To say that Michel Temer faces huge challenges would be an understatement.

Brazil’s 75-year-old acting president must fight the Zika virus, which can cause birth defects and has ravaged thousands of families in poor northeastern states. He must rescue Latin America’s largest economy from its worst recession since the 1930s, most likely by making painful – and protest-invoking – cuts to the pension system and social welfare spending.

He must win back the trust of a populace that has come to believe virtually all politicians, including him, are lining their pockets with taxpayer money.

And he must begin these gargantuan tasks with the Summer Olympics just months away and while his predecessor and former-ally-turned enemy, Dilma Rousseff, is living in the presidential residence and rallying supporters around assertions she was the victim of a coup led by Temer.

“This is going to be a real mess. The combination of all these factors at once is unbelievable,” said Alexandre Barros, a Brasilia-based consultant. “Everybody is unhappy with the situation but nobody knows what to do.”

For the sake of the nation’s 200 million people, and for all the South American nations whose fortunes are tied to Brazil’s powerhouse economy, one hopes that Temer does know what to do.

The career politician, who is married to a 32-year-old former beauty pageant contestant, took office on Thursday just hours after the Senate voted to impeach Rousseff for allegedly using illegal accounting tricks to hide deficits in the federal budget. Rousseff insists she has done nothing wrong, and vows to fight as the Senate holds a trial, a process that can take up to six months.

If the Senate votes to remove Rousseff, as is likely, Temer would complete her term that goes through 2018.

Temer is getting early kudos for one Cabinet choice: Finance Minister Henrique Meirelles is widely respected for serving as Central Bank chief during the boom years from 2003 to 2010.

Meirelles quickly signaled that he’ll push to revamp labor laws to increase productivity and reform a pension system known for generous payouts and early retirement; many public workers can retire between their early and mid-50s.

Actually pulling that off will be very difficult. Many lawmakers in Congress rallied around the idea of ousting Rousseff, but building consensus around unpopular reforms could prove elusive. Still, the ongoing

Analysts also believe that Temer, who has said he won’t run for president in 2018, will be thinking about his legacy. This could be Temer’s last stint in any office: He was recently found guilty of violating campaign finance laws, a decision that makes him ineligible to run for office for eight years, pending likely appeals.

“If Temer gets the ball rolling on major reforms, this would take him to the level of statesman,” said Marcos Troyjo, a professor at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs.

Aside from Meirelles, however, Temer is already coming under sharp criticism for the rest of his Cabinet, which is widely criticized as an example of vast inequality in a nation that is predominantly non-white.

Temer’s entire Cabinet is made up of white men, including some with very thin resumes and others who are under a cloud of corruption allegations.

Rousseff, the nation’s first female president, wasted no time in making contrasts with her much more diverse outgoing Cabinet.

“I think gender questions are a question of democracy in a country where the majority, more than 50 percent, are women,” she said Friday, the first day of Temer’s government.

Noting that her nation was the last in the Americas to outlaw slavery, in 1888, she added: “Here in Brazil, discrimination has a face: It’s black, woman and child.”

One of Temer’s biggest challenges, if not a direct threat to his presidency, is the so-called Car Wash probe. Led by judge Sergio Moro, investigators uncovered a multi-billion dollar kickback scheme centered on the state oil company Petrobras that has astonished even a populous long inured to political graft.

Cameron and Sabina each called it a day at 1,225, while Mikayla gave no indication of stopping.

“I wasn’t expecting to do that many,” Cameron said. “It was fun.”

Mikayla was still going as the oldest students started their push-ups

and hadn’t stopped by the time most of them finished. Bergeson was proud she did 125 push-ups, noting she beat Becker, who could only muster 113.

“I’m dying already,” Becker shouted on his 100th push-up.

Becker and Bergeson finished in time to see Mikayla approaching 2,000 push-ups. Mikayla’s mother, Jessica Conwell, noted her daughter is the push-up champ at Aux Sable Elementary School in Minooka.

“She did 88 in P.E. They stop the kids at 86 but she did two more,” she said.

“Mikayla lives on her hands. She walks around the house on a handstand all the time,” LaRocca said.

Kneeling at the edge of the mat, Todd Conwell told his daughter to keep her form from “getting sloppy” as a dozen girls surrounded her to count reps.

After reaching 2,010 push-ups, Mikayla bounced up and smiled for pictures before going off in search of a drink of water.

“That was good ... It was painful,” she said. “My goal was 88. Nobody will believe I did this many.”

Two people found dead inside SUV on Chicago expressway

CHICAGO – Authorities said two people were found fatally shot inside an SUV on a Chicago area highway.

Illinois State Police released a statement Sunday saying the shooting occurred around 4 a.m. in the northbound lanes of Interstate 90 on the northwest side.

Police said a silver Chevrolet Tahoe stopped in a lane, and a male driver and a female passenger were found inside.

They were found unresponsive, each with gunshot wounds to the head.

They were identified as 43-year-old Eric Taylor and 36-year-old Camille Cooley, both of Waukegan.

Police said a black semi-au-

tomatic weapon was found on the driver’s side floor.

All local lanes of I-90 were shut down for the investigation. Authorities did not immediately have other information.

WLS-TV reported it was the 18th Chicago area expressway shooting this year.

Judge approves settlement in suit on mentally ill inmates

PEORIA – A federal judge in Peoria has approved a settlement between the Illinois state prison system and lawyers for 11,000 mentally ill prisoners who alleged that inadequate treatment amounted to “cruel and unusual punishment.”

The agreement in a 2007 class-action lawsuit calls for the Illinois Department of Corrections to build four new treatment units at the Logan, Pontiac and Dixon prisons as well as in Joliet.

Those new units will cost $40 million. Hiring new staff members as part of the settlement is expected to cost

another $40 million a year.

A tentative agreement in the case was reached in late December. U.S. District Judge Michael Mihm signed off on the settlement Friday, calling the state’s plans “fair and reasonable.”

Agency launches national park study for New Philadelphia

PITTSFIELD – The first steps have been taken in a special study to determine whether the New Philadelphia site in western Illinois should become a national park.

More than 100 people attended a public meeting Wednesday night in Pittsfield where a National Park Service team explained the study process and heard from residents.

The meeting was “very, very productive,” study project manager Tom Gibney said.

The study will look at New Philadelphia’s suitability and feasibility as a national park site, the Herald-Whig reported.

century town of New Philadelphia, founded by former slave Free Frank McWorter, thrived with residents until a railroad bypassed it in 1869 and it dissolved in 1885. It is about 280 miles southwest of Chicago.

“The story of my family and the legacy of New Philadelphia is the story of freedom, and as such it anchors the best hope we have for this country,” said Gerald McWorter, a great-greatgreat-grandson of the founder.

The park service will make a recommendation to the secretary of the Interior, but Congress makes final determinations on new national parks.

U.S. Sens. Dick Durbin and Mark Kirk and U.S. Rep. Darin LaHood of Illinois back the idea of a national park designation.

“In addition to the archaeological findings, the human story, the story of freedom, dedication, perseverance in a time of extreme and horrible challenge, is one that needs to be shared and taught to future generations,” LaHood spokesman Brad Stotler said.

Normal may revive Route 66 landmark as tourist draw

NORMAL – A historical former gas station and Route 66 landmark in Normal could become a city-owned tourist attraction.

The Pantagraph reported that the City Council is scheduled to vote Monday on the purchase of the onetime Sprague’s service station.

City Manager Mark Peterson said the town has been negotiating the purchase for the past year.

The city council will consider spending $229,000 to purchase the property and $200,000 for building improvements.

The current owner bought the property in 2006 in hopes of converting it into a bed and breakfast along with a gift shop and restaurant.

The 85-year-old building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated a town landmark.

Three coaches who made a difference

When you’ve been covering high school sports during parts of four decades, you run into a lot of fascinating individuals who’ve made their marks, not only on the sports that they were involved with but also with the hundreds or thousands of athletes who competed for them.

As someone who has covered as many different sports as possible for a long time, I’ve had the privilege of dealing with many of the great coaches who’ve left their mark on sports in this area. So as is the case each spring, it’s time to say goodbye to another quality group of coaches who not only made a big impact on their sports but also in-

Lockport’s Denise Hadley, Lincoln-Way East’s Brian Papa and Bolingbrook’s Art Pahl have coached for a century of school years and nearly twice that long in individual seasons.

I’ve gotten to know them over the years and always respected not only the influence they had in their sports, but also the dedication they had for their own athletes and the respect for other

individuals who they went up against.

Hadley’s 32 years at Lockport ended on a high note Saturday when Haley Egelhof and Jessica Miller became the 13th and 14th individuals to earn medals for the Porters at the IHSA badminton finals. Last week, Lockport won its 16th sectional title in the last 22 years.

When I think of the coaches who were the biggest proponents for this sport in the south suburbs, people like Andrew’s Terry TerHaar, Lincoln-Way’s Donna Thompson and Hadley come to mind. They not only were passionate supporters of badminton, but their teams pushed each other, and, as a result, the sport continued to

get better.

But badminton wasn’t Hadley’s only significant contribution to Lockport athletics. She was an assistant coach under Julia Hudson during an era when the Porters were among the state’s elite programs in volleyball.

Brian Papa is closing out a 34-year head coaching career that took him to Bloom, Sandburg, Lincoln-Way and Lincoln-Way East. But the moment that changed the future for the aspiring basketball coach was when he was asked to coach lower level soccer at Rich Central.

Providence won seven of the 18 events and finished second, three points behind champion Loyola, in the Chicago Catholic League Championship Meet.

COLLEGE BASEBALL Lewis gets five nods: Joe Sparacio

(Plainfield Central), Neal Tyrell (Minooka), Austin Mastela (Lockport),

Brandon Collins and Sam Cybulski were named to the All-GLVC second team.

Sparacio led the Flyers and ranked fifth in the GLVC in hitting with a .380 average. He had a .576 slugging percentage and .444 on-base mark.

Tyrell’s .368 batting average ranked eighth in the GLVC and his 70 hits tied for fourth. He scored a team-high 50 runs, which tied for sixth in the league.

Mastela knocked in 29 runs while hitting .315. Collins committed no errors, was fifth in the GLVC with 16 stolen bases and had a .344/.415/.477 slash line. Cybulski batted .324 while slugging .461.

Coal City’s Frantini cited: Rockford’s Evan Frantini (Coal City) was selected to the All-Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference first team. His 20 doubles led the NACC, is seventh among all NCAA Division III baseball players and is one off the Rockford season record. He also led the conference with 42 RBIs, finished second with 27 walks, tied for second with three triples, was seventh with a .524 slugging percentage and ninth with a .439 onbase percentage.

Continued from page 16 Although he didn’t know the sport, he’s worked hard to become one of the state’s all-time winningest coaches in soccer. Earlier this spring, he became one of a handful of coaches in the nation to reach the 800-win mark, with 452 of those coming in the boys season.

Papa felt he would have been a great basketball coach, and he served for many years as Jim Martin’s assistant at East. But as I told him, he did much more by not only becoming one of the all-time winners in a sport that he never intended to coach but also became a huge spokesman for soccer, serving as president of the sport’s coaches association.

I always believed Papa could have been a great coach in any sport. And even though he was challenged on spelling some players’ names, he was a completely behind his athletes, pushing them when they needed it and giving them extra attention when it was warranted.

One of the many memorable things I’ll remember about Papa happened in 2011, after his shameful ouster as East’s boys coach. When the Griffins beat Stagg to win the sectional title, his former players ran to the other

side of the field to celebrate the feat with their coach.

And Art Pahl will always represent Bolingbrook athletics in my mind. The Raiders alum has been a coaching fixture for 36 years and along with men like Larry Bernard and Phil Acton, they helped to lay a great foundation at the Brook which hopefully will long be remembered.

Pahl has coached track and field throughout the years and also was a longtime cross country coach. A true student of both sports, no one was more knowledgeable about who the top teams and individuals were that his squad would be facing. He’s also been a great advocate, coaching and hosting track meets during the offseason to benefit many different athletes.

While all three are hall of famers in their own right, the thing that I’ll remember best about them was watching how they dealt with kids, whether it was their own or those from other schools. They epitomized the good aspects of what a coach should be. I know that they’ve influenced many and more than any wins or losses, that is their most important legacy.

AURORA – Waubonsee Community College scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to beat Joliet Junior College, 6-5, Sunday and win the best-of-three Region IV Division III Regional in two games.

The Wolves (32-20) had been hoping to get the series back to Wayne L. King Jr. Field for a winner-take-all game Monday afternoon. But Waubonsee (35-17), which beat JJC, 2-1, Friday in the series opener, had other ideas.

Joliet took a 1-0 first-inning lead but by the fourth inning had fallen behind, 4-1. Jermaine Terry (Plainfield South) belted a two-run home run in the fifth to make it 4-3, and the Wolves scored twice in the seventh on Sam Muszynski’s leadoff double, a two-out RBI single from Thomas Smith (Lockport) and Jake Drada’s RBI double to take a 5-4 lead.

Charlie Wright (Lemont) started on the mound and had some control issues. He lasted 21/3 innings and allowed three earned runs. Nick Evola (Morris) provided 42/3 strong innings in relief, allowing no earned runs.

pitch the bottom of the eighth and took the loss as Waubonsee scored twice in the inning on three hits.

Drada and Davis Purviance (Lockport) each had two of JJC’s eight hits.

Waubonsee advances to the district tournament, the final step before the Division III World Series, against a team from Ohio or Michigan.

Floyd, Bears have plan to get him bigger BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush

Dating back a few weeks to the draft and now that the Bears have wrapped up rookie mini-camp Sunday, the hot button or buzz around the ballclub continues to be all about Leonard Floyd.

There is no debate about the young man’s unique athletic traits and there is one school of thought that he looks like an excellent choice because of them.

There is another school of thought that states Floyd just wasn’t productive enough at Georgia, in light of his special abilities, to justify being selected so high.

Some would like to debate this, but the fact is his numbers just don’t say ninth-overall pick.

Although it is all fun, offseason chatter, I find myself firmly planted on the fence and my impression after spending the weekend at Halas Hall is that there may be members of the Bears brain trust sitting next to me.

Having never stood by a scale with Floyd on it, I can only tell you that numerous reliable sources assure me the young man played between 225 and 230 pounds while he was at Georgia, and it has been taken as a given Floyd will have to get “bigger” to be productive let alone excel for the Bears.

Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio may not agree, telling the media after Saturday’s practice, “The weight

He’s going to weigh somewhere between 230 and 235,” Fangio said. “That’s just what he’s going to weigh. We knew that before we drafted him. So it’s not an issue. We knew that and that’s a fact and that’s what he is.”

That doesn’t mean Fangio doesn’t like Floyd, but is this a solid endorsement?

“He’s very athletic. He’s long. He can run. He’s got good instincts,” Fangio said. “They used him all over the place, so I think he has good football instincts, which we’ll see if that translates here.

“So there were a lot of things to like from his athletic ability, movement, he’s got some pass-rush talent, he can play in coverage, he’s got

talent for that.”

Coach John Fox does think getting bigger matters for Floyd, but he’s not worried about it, saying, “I think all these guys gain weight, I think we all do with age,” Fox said. “So that will just happen and we’re more concerned with getting him ready mentally and technically in our systems more so than the other stuff will take care of itself.”

On Sunday, we got to visit with the young man for the first time since his whirlwind draft weekend.

He is an extremely pleasant kid, is respectful to the max, calling almost everyone sir, and he seems really anxious to please.

I asked him about the weight issue and he said, “I’ll play at whatever

weight my coaches see me playing at.

I’m with Jenn (Jennifer Gibson, Bears sport science coordinator & sport dietitian) every day, we’ve got a game plan laid out, so we’re working on it.”

Obviously, the Bears plan is to do everything they can to get him bigger.

When I asked him if he felt he could succeed without adding weight Floyd said, “Yes, sir, yes, sir. I believe in myself and the coaches believe in me, too.”

Believing in yourself and having the tools to succeed are two different things.

Again, I’m stuck on the fence here, and I’m not going anywhere until I’ve seen him in pads and on the field against NFL competition through October and November.

Put on the tape of him in college and you can see him regularly stifled when bigger, stronger guys got their hands on him. Imagine what could happen at the next level?

However, on that same tape you’ll see him at times already past those bigger, stronger guys before they were out of their stances. Imagine what could happen at the next level?

History does not favor drafting athletes over football players, but the move has produced the occasional special player. Is Floyd that guy?

My best guess is that minimally the Leonard Floyd debate is one we’ll still be having when next year’s draft rolls around.

Bears conclude rookie minicamp, Floyd still unsigned but working hard

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com LAKE FOREST – The Bears wrapped up rookie minicamp Sunday, and even though first-round pick Leonard Floyd has yet to sign his contract, he practiced all three days and is already working with Jenn Gibson, the team’s sports science coordinator and dietitian, and he has an envious routine.

“I’ve got prompts set up on my phone of times in the day that I’m supposed to eat, making sure I eat at those time when I get the alarm. Things like that,” Floyd said.

Vic Fangio wasn’t too concerned with Floyd’s weight when discussing it Saturday, but the Bears certainly want

the No. 9 pick to get as big as he can get, so Floyd said the alarms remind him to have a weight bar, protein shake or a sandwich.

Outside the diet, Floyd is enjoying having one main responsibility with the Bears – rushing off the edge – after playing a versatile role for Georgia.

OTAs begin May 24, and Floyd plans to continue learning the nuances of his new role in the Bears’ defense before his next time on the field.

“Get into the playbook, get into the film room with [outside linebackers] coach [Clint] Hurtt, just learn all the whole defense, my keys, how to run-fit, everything,” he said.

The Harvard guy: Tight end Ben Braunecker, an undrafted rookie, was

probably the only one of the 64 players at Halas Hall who spent time in a mitochondrial protein regulatory lab.

Braunecker still has aspirations to be a doctor after his football career, specializing in infectious diseases, but for now he’s hoping to make the Bears’ roster at a thin position. Braunecker got all the motivation he needed when he didn’t get drafted, two months after he lit up the Combine, ranking near the top at his position at every drill.

“Projections had me anywhere from [the fourth to sixth round] and I sat there on draft day for about seven hours on my couch with an ESPN camera in my face watching every pick go by, and that definitely puts a chip on my shoulder,” he said. “I want to make

this team, I’m driven to make this team and I’m really thankful the Bears gave me this opportunity.”

Braunecker acknowledged that the plan to be a doctor is “something to fall back on” and that “you don’t go to Harvard to be a professional football player,” but he is focused on starting an NFL career in Chicago.

“I think a nice, strong, reliable, ‘Y’ tight end is what the Bears are looking for right now,” he said. “I’m just very thankful to be given the opportunity as an undrafted free agent to come into a system and to work with coach Frank Smith, who’s great in my first impression, at giving me the tools, the opportunity to be able to step in and hopefully make the roster.”

Pirates end Lester no-hit bid in 7th, edge Cubs

CHICAGO – Starling Marte singled with one out in the seventh inning to end Jon Lester’s no-hit bid, then scored on Jung Ho Kang’s double to put Gerrit Cole and the Pittsburgh Pirates ahead to stay in a 2-1 victory over the Cubs on Sunday.

Kang added an eighth-inning home run to help the Pirates beat the major league-leading Cubs for the first time in six tries this season.

Cole (4-3) allowed three hits in eight shutout innings. Mark Melancon gave up a run in a shaky ninth, but held on for his 11th save in 12 chances.

Lester (4-2), who threw a no-hitter with Boston in 2008, had permitted only two walks and retired 16 straight batters before Marte’s opposite-field liner to right on a changeup.

Marte stole second and scored on Kang’s drive to the gap in right-center, chasing Lester after 109 pitches. He struck out nine.

Cole struck out seven in a 95-pitch performance that gave the Pirates a much-needed lift after a frustrating two weeks against their NL Central rivals.

The Cubs took all three games in Pittsburgh early this month, then the first two in this series. Pittsburgh had been outscored, 37-11, by the Cubs while

falling nine games back in the division.

But the 25-year-old Cole, who lost to the Cubs in last year’s NL wild-card game and again to the Cubs on May 2, continued his dominance at Wrigley Field. The right-hander’s six wins against the Cubs since the start of 2014 are the most of any pitcher, and he hasn’t allowed a homer at Wrigley Field in 45 innings.

The Cubs’ third loss in 13 games denied them their sixth series sweep of the year and dropped them to 27-9 after Lester came close to producing the club’s second no-hitter of the season.

Jake Arrieta shut down Cincinnati in a 16-0 win on April 21, part of the Cubs’ best start since the 1907 season.

The Cubs got little going against Cole. One of their three hits came when Fowler was credited with a double after shortstop Jordy Mercer lost a popup in the sun. Rizzo went 0 for 3, ending the majors’ longest active streak of reaching base at 26 games.

The Associated Press DOVER, Del. – Matt Kenseth held off Kyle Larson in a thrilling run down the stretch to win a wreck-filled race Sunday at Dover International Speedway.

Kenseth snapped a 17-race winless skid with his 37th career victory – and denied Larson his first win.

“I got digging the best I could and tried to hold him off,” Kenseth said.

Kenseth and Larson battled door-todoor for part of the final five laps and the 2003 NASCAR champion picked all the right lines and pulled away at the end. Chase Elliott made a late push and finished third in the No. 24 Chevrolet.

Larson matched his career-best finish and Elliott had the top finish of his rookie season.

Kenseth joined his three Joe Gibbs Racing teammates in victory lane for 2016. The 44-year-old Kenseth is older than the combined ages of Elliott, 20, and the 23-year-old Larson. Larson said he had too much respect for Kenseth to try and bump out of the way when they closed within a few inches of each other.

“I was trying to do all you could do to get by him without getting into him,” Larson said.

Kenseth, Larson and Elliott were among the survivors after Jimmie Johnson triggered a late-race crash that eliminated several contenders.

He was responsible for a pileup straight out of the Talladega Superspeedway highlight reel that knocked out a slew of drivers who raced up front all race and brought it to a halt with less than 50 laps left.

Johnson, a 10-time winner at Dover, failed to jump off the restart because of a faulty transmission in the No. 48.

The six-time champion could not shift the Chevy into third gear and 18 cars – stacked and off at full speed – were collected in the melee.

He was leading in the outside lane as he closed in on the start-finish line.

Martin Truex Jr. nailed the 48 from behind and Dover soon looked like the site of a gnarly demolition derby.

“In my career, I’ve never had a transmission do that to me,” Johnson said.

Truex, Kevin Harvick, Dale Earnhardt Jr., and Kyle Busch were among the drivers that had their cars piled up on the concrete.

Truex led 47 laps and seemed poised to earn his first win of the season.

“I want to get out and punch somebody,” Truex said over the radio. “Seriously. Hard. Like, as hard as I can.”

Busch, the reigning series champion, knew there was nowhere for the 18 to go but into the pile.

NEW YORK – More than a week after they wobbled back to the Bronx in last place, Chase Headley, Carlos Beltran and their New York teammates whooshed out of Yankee Stadium looking way more potent.

Headley lined a pinch-hit double to break a seventh-inning tie, Beltran launched his 400th career home run and the Yankees wrapped up a successful homestand by beating the White Sox, 7-5, Sunday.

The Yankees overcame a hiccup by reliever Dellin Betances to finish a much–needed 7-3 run against the AL Central–leading White Sox, World Series champion Kansas City and eternal rival Boston.

“It really shows we’re capable of winning against good teams,” Beltran said.

The Yankees also have their vaunted bullpen set up exactly the way they envisioned.

After Betances recovered to escape his own jam, Andrew Miller pitched a perfect eighth and Aroldis Chapman closed for his third save.

Headley was stuck in a season-long slump before going 7 for 20, including his first extra-base hits of the year, in seven games since his 32nd birthday.

Beltran’s two-run drive in the sixth put the Yankees ahead, 5-4. He became the 54th big leaguer to reach 400 home runs, with Mickey Mantle, Eddie Murray and Chipper Jones the other switch-hitters to do it.

Beltran connected from the right side, immediately after lefty Zach Duke took over for lefty reliever Dan Jennings. Beltran joined Carlos Delgado and Juan Gonzalez as players born in Puerto Rico to hit at least 400 homers.

Chicago’s first error in May, a wide throw by second baseman Brett Lawrie on a slow roller by Jacoby Ellsbury, set up Beltran’s home run. The speedy leadoff man made his first start since May 6 after straining his hip.

Starters Masahiro Tanaka and Miguel Gonzalez both were slow and ineffective. They combined to allow seven runs on 13 hits and eight walks while throwing 193 pitches in 92/3 innings.

After beating the Normal Cornbelters, 12-2, Saturday night, the Slammers entered Sunday with their sights set on sweeping the weekend series and returning to Joliet for Tuesday night’s home opener against the Washington Wild Things at Silver Cross Field with a 3-1 record.

Instead, it was quite the opposite. Normal whipped the Slammers (1-3) in a doubleheader – by scores of 16-1 and 12-1. One of Sunday’s games was a makeup for the Friday night rainout.

The Cornbelters had five- and seven-run innings in Game 1 and began Game 2 with five, four and three runs, respectively, in the first three innings. The seven-run splash in Game 1 came in the sixth inning, the Cornbelters’ final inning to hit. Opening the second game with 12 runs in their first three innings means they scored 19 runs over a four-inning span.

Leadoff man Charlie White homered to open Game 1 and singled home a run in Game 2 for a Joliet offense that totaled four hits in each game.

Melvin Rodriguez cracked two hits in the opener.

As for the Slammers’ pitching, starter Luke Crumley and relievers Brandon Paulson and Alex Moore had difficulties in Game 1. Starter David Carver and reliever Quinn Pippin had a rough time in Game 2. Relievers Tyler Levine, Marc Rutledge, Chris Rice and Kevin McNorton did combine to throw five scoreless innings in the two games.

Day caused only a little drama Sunday in what otherwise felt more like another coronation for the 28-year-old Australian. He led by at least two shots the entire round, played bogey-free again on the back nine at the TPC Sawgrass and closed with a 1-under 71 to win golf’s richest tournament.

“I just wanted to win this so bad,” Day said.

Along the way, he put a stamp on his No. 1 ranking.

Day won for the seventh time in the last 10 months, titles that include a major, a World Golf Championship and a pair of FedEx Cup playoff events. He became the first wire-to-wire winner in 16 years at Sawgrass.

Day won $1.89 million from the $10.5 million purse. He won by four shots over Kevin Chappell, who closed with a 69 to pick up a $1,134,000 consolation check.

The greens at the Stadium Course were not nearly as severe as Saturday, when only six players managed to break par and Day made a pair of double bogeys to slow what had been shaping up as a runaway.

This time, Day inflicted his own damage by missing greens and flubbing three chips on his way to a bogey on the par-5 ninth that cut his lead to two shots going to a back nine filled with possibilities. With two quick birdies, the outcome soon was inevitable.

Headaches could be sign of illness Dear Doctor K: I’ve had a headache every day for at least six months. Painkillers don’t help much. I know headaches are common, and I don’t like calling my doctor unless it’s a serious problem. Should I call him?

Dear Reader: Yes, you should. I imagine you’re thinking that because headaches are common, they rarely indicate a serious underlying problem – like a brain tumor. That’s true. I also imagine you have suffered from headaches for a long time, although you didn’t say that. You may think if you’ve had the problem a long time, it can’t be serious.

Here’s how I look at it. Many people suffer from repeated attacks of headache during their adult life (and even in childhood). Usually, the cause is migraine, tension or sinus headache. While it’s true these are not as “serious” as a brain tumor or brain infection, they sure can make a person’s life miserable.

But common chronic headache conditions, such as migraines, uncommonly cause headaches literally every day. That’s why the fact you’ve been having them every day for at least six months worries me.

I’d be even more worried if you told me these headaches are a new experience and that you didn’t suffer from headaches previously. Chronic headaches that develop for the first time after age 50 are more likely to be something serious. That’s why, if you were my patient, I would do testing for the more serious causes of headache.

The other reason to see your doctor is to get some relief – even if the headaches aren’t caused by a serious condition. One possibility is the pain medicines you’ve been taking may be contributing to your headaches, rather than relieving them.

Caffeine-containing headache drugs most often are to blame. Check the label of the pain pills you’ve been taking to see whether

Caffeine helps painkillers work more quickly and efficiently by causing blood vessels to narrow. This makes you feel better – temporarily – because widened blood vessels contribute to headache pain.

But when the caffeine wears off, your blood vessels expand and your headache returns.

Regular use of painkillers likely also interferes with your body’s natural painkilling system. So ask your doctor whether there’s a chance you’re overusing headache medications.

Talk to your doctor about preventive medications, such as a muscle relaxant.

Another effective strategy is to combine a tricyclic drug with a beta blocker. Beta blockers decrease the intensity of headaches, while tricyclics reduce their frequency.

Also ask about physical therapies that might help: a heating pad applied daily to your neck and shoulders, massage, ultrasound or gentle stretching to relieve muscle tightness that may contribute to your headaches.

I don’t want to sound like an alarmist. And to repeat, the vast majority of headaches are not caused by serious and life-threatening illnesses such as brain tumors or infections. But daily headaches, especially if you’ve not suffered from headaches earlier in life, need to be thoroughly evaluated.
