By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – The outcome of a state investigation into the finances of Lincoln-Way School District 210 was a good sign for the superintendent, but the leader of a residents group suing the district doubted the results.

A Illinois State Board of Education report on the investigation of six school districts in dire financial situations showed four of them, including Lincoln-Way, did not meet the criteria for more state intervention in the management of their finances.

That was a good thing for Superintendent Scott Tingley, who said the report also shows state officials were satisfied with the information the district provided for the investigation.

Lincoln-Way’s deficit reduction plan includes shuttering North High School and Tingley said over the summer the district will transition to only Central, East and West.

“Next fall, we’ll be in three build-

ings,” he said.

The district will need to balance its budget and create surpluses to pay back $30 million in borrowing, he said.

Liz Sands, founder of Lincoln-Way Area Taxpayers Unite, a group suing the district to keep North open, said she disagreed the district is not in financial difficulty, and she thought it should have met the criteria set by the state.

“They’re using Lincoln-Way’s numbers and it’s hard to trust their numbers. It’s difficult to say,” she said about the ISBE report. “I don’t know if ISBE looked deep enough but maybe that’s not their job.”

Since late 2015, Lincoln-Way has been rocked by controversies over LWATU’s lawsuit, the financial practices of the past administration of former Superintendent Lawrence Wyllie, the resignation of three board members and other issues.

LWATU has challenged the district’s financial management by critically analyzing its past practices, putting forward a community deficit reduction plan and

arguing that operating all four high schools is possible.

Sands said her group has shared its findings with ISBE. She said she feels the state agency – which she thinks understands what is going on with Lincoln-Way – is not looking at the bigger picture where students will be impacted by the closing of a school.

During Wednesday’s ISBE meeting on the report, the state board heard discussion that noted the results of the financial investigation of the four districts – including Lincoln-Way – that did not meet the financial difficulty criteria did not mean they had a “clean bill of health.”

Questions cropped up during the meeting on whether state statute guidelines identify districts that are in financial difficulty early enough, especially with some districts having less than one or two weeks of cash on hand.

Cash on hand is one of the indicators ISBE uses for the estimated number of days a district could meet operating expenses with no additional revenues.

Postal carriers sponsoring Stamp Out Hunger on Saturday

On Saturday, the National Association of Letter Carriers, U.S. Postal Service and other partners are holding their annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive, where residents leave food items near their mailboxes. The carriers will then take those items to local food pantries.

“This was actually initiated by our carriers union,” Morris Postmaster Tom Kimes said. “I think it’s a good thing that they recognized that there are people in need and that they wanted to help the community they serve.”

gle-day food drive, according to a news release from the U.S. Postal Service.

In 2015, Americans donated 70.6 million pounds of food, feeding millions of people. It was the 12th consecutive year of at least 70 million pounds collected by letter carriers, bringing the grand total to 1.4 billion pounds of food collected since the food drive began in 1993, according to the news release.

Plainfield Postmaster Ronald Kinzler said items collected in Plainfield will go to the Plainfield Area Interfaith Food Pantry. The pantry told them last year that the amount of food picked up by the carriers on that one day would sustain

them for a month, Kinzler said.

The Morris Post Office is partnering with We Care of Grundy County for its food donations. Kimes said donations can be made by leaving a bag of nonperishable food items by the mailbox.

There should not be any frozen or refrigerated food, and items should be within expiration dates and unopened.

Kinzler also suggested that hygiene products, such as toothpaste and deodorant, are appreciated too.

Kinzler said many postal workers in Plainfield will use a vacation day and volunteer their time on Stamp Out Hunger day, often going out in their own vehicles to pick up food.

“They are very dedicated in Plainfield,” he said. “ ... They take a lot of pride in it. They strive every year to beat the previous year’s poundage.”

JJC graduation student speaker forged connections, advocated for disability rights

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Ivan Bew is the kind of student at Joliet Junior College who likes to meet people he’s never seen before and help them feel better if they’re looking down.

“Even if you manage to put a smile on their face for like 30 seconds, that smile matters, and you’re able to help them get through the day. … Whenever I’m able to help someone like that, that’s wonderful,” Bew said.

The 26-year-old psychology major has met friends at JJC this way, even someone he called one of his best friends in the entire world.

During his time at the school, he’s participated in clubs and events, and advocated for others like him who have disabilities through a city of Joliet committee and the Will-Grundy Center for Independent Living.

Bew and hundreds of other students will graduate Friday, and he’s one student who will take with him wonderful memories of his time at the college as he moves onward.

“It’s been wonderful,” he said.

“There were times where I didn’t think I would get to graduation, but I’m happy I stuck it out and made it through. This has been a great school, a great experience. I met some of the most wonderful people in my life, and I wouldn’t change my time here for anything.”

While JJC has made an impact on Bew’s life, he made enough of an impact on others at the college that he was nominated and then chosen to be the student speaker at the spring commencement ceremony at Lewis University Fieldhouse in Romeoville.

“Anything he can do to make the world a better place, he does, and I just think that is so notable,” said Pam Dilday, director of JJC Student Activities and Student Life.

Dilday nominated Bew as the student speaker. She met him through the Emerging Leaders program at the college. She said there were “very, very good candidates” for the role who represented the diverse student population, but Bew rose to the top with his story and message.

Bew and Dilday said they found each other inspiring. Bew said other people he met at JJC who are amazing and inspiring are Margot Underwood, a psychology professor and faculty speaker at Friday’s graduation, and his two al-

Dilday said it will not be the same at JJC without Bew traveling the hallways and smiling at people.

“He’s just got that positive attitude, and it comes across to everybody. He’s going to be missed on campus,” she said.

This spring’s ceremony marks JJC’s 115th anniversary, and the number of spring graduates has been rising since 2013.

From 2013 to 2015, spring graduate numbers increased from 858 to 997,

according to JJC. The number of graduates this spring – not finalized until mid-July – is 1,216.

After graduation, Bew said he plans to either attend Governors State University in spring 2017 – his plan B – or take off in June for Washington, D.C., for his plan A: a National Council on Independent Living internship – if he’s accepted – to help others with physical disabilities.

“I’m of the firm philosophy you should have a plan B before you have a plan A because you need to assume plan A will fail,” he said.

Bew’s advocacy has included being part of the Joliet Mayor’s Committee of Citizens with Disabilities to improve

the lives of residents with disabilities in the city in ways such as improving handicap parking spots.

He said the message he gives to his friends who have disabilities – Bew has cerebral palsy – is when they see him doing things that seem great, he is as ordinary as anybody else, and they have the same potential to go even further than he has.

When it comes to being a college student, one thing Bew said he wishes many people would understand is that it’s like having a full-time job without getting paid for it.

“We’re here every day – hour after hour – studying and trying to make something happen so we can make the dreams we want come true. … It’s always worth it if you’re willing to keep going because you get more than just the homework and the tests and meeting professors,” he said.

“You meet people and you make connections that hopefully can last and influence you in a positive way for your entire life.”

D-86 staff to fix, clean up buildings

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet School District 86 staff will tackle asbestos abatement, repairs and mass cleaning across school buildings this summer.

Anna White, district director of facilities, showed the Board of School Inspectors at Wednesday’s meeting the projects that need to be addressed, such as asbestos abatement at Gompers, Culbertson and A.O. Marshall schools, as well as the JFK administrative center and Building Support Services.

Other projects include repairs at outside areas of JFK administrative center totaling $42,000 collectively. White said there has been water leakage that is starting to cause pipes to rust and corrode walls.

Board Vice President Jeffrey Pritz said he would like to see bundling of projects so it would be possible to get bids or proposals on a larger scope of work – as there’s other areas of the district that need work – and the district may have some leverage on getting better prices.

“We should definitely be looking at that,” he said.

Board Inspector Deborah Ziech said she appreciated the idea of bundling but she also liked receiving a breakdown of costs.

“I also think it’s important to note this section is costing us this and this section is that, so when we put it all together we really have a picture of what exactly has been done,” Ziech said.

Other work White brought up was repairs to a crumbling wall at A.O. Mar-

shall school estimated at $281,172, work at Culbertson for $77,965 and gym floor work at Dirksen, Gompers, Hufford and Washington amounting to $45,730 collectively.

White told the board about the need for parking lot work at Mayrcrest and Jefferson schools and shared the plan for mass cleaning at all the schools this summer.

Disciplinary policy changes

Before Wednesday’s meeting, the board inspectors met for the policy committee meeting to review and ask questions about changes to the school’s disciplinary policies in light of state legislation that was signed into law last August.

The law is meant to encourage schools to find alternatives to resolving

a student’s behavioral issues without disrupting their education.

The board had before them changes for their consideration to the student discipline, suspension procedures, expulsion procedures and bus conduct policies.

“These are all policies that need to go into effect for next school year,” said Nicholas Sakellariou, the district’s chief legal services and labor relations officer.

Sakellariou gave the board an overview of the state law known previously as Senate Bill 100 at the March 2 meeting.

The board also reviewed Wednesday changes to policies regarding misconduct by students with disabilities, participants in extracurricular activities and student athlete concussions and head injuries.

Joliet officials get revved up for Nitro Nite

The Joliet City Center Partnership held a press party Wednesday evening at the Joliet Area Historical Museum to showcase the third annual Nitro Nite.

The event, which celebrates the Route 66 NHRA Nationals at Route 66 Raceway, will be held July 7 in downtown Joliet.

“It’s a great event to bring people downtown,” said Sarah Strickland, marketing and event manager for the City Center Partnership.

Nitro Nite will include National Hot Rod Association driver autograph sessions and nostalgic cars. Residents who own classic cars are invited to bring them to the event.

“It’s just going to be a lot of fun for the local community and the local fans,” said Brandon Brown, digital marketing coordinator for Route 66 Raceway and Chicagoland Speedway.

Jazz and blues band Soul Motion will perform live and vendors will be in attendance, including downtown businesses Tin Roof, Gji’s Sweet Shoppe and Sue Regis Glass Art, which will hold glass art demonstrations.

The event will be family friendly, Strickland said, and there will be activities for kids.

Nitro Nite will take place from 5 to 10 p.m. along Chicago Street between Jefferson and Cass streets.

“It’s grown tremendously in the two years that we’ve had it,” event coordinator Mike Guglielmucci said, noting that the race theme sets it apart from other downtown happenings.

In its first year – 2014 – Nitro Nite drew 4,000 people, according to Guglielmucci. Last year, more than 8,000

attended.

The NHRA Nationals are Route 66 Raceway’s top annual drag racing event, raceway officials said. This year, the nationals, which will take place July 7 to 10, are anticipated to bring in about 50,000 attendees across all four days.

Lonnie M. Pinnick, 25, has been charged with murder and aggravated battery though he and some witnesses told police he was shooting back over the car in self-defense, according to court records.

Judge Dave Carlson said he re-

viewed video recordings of police interviews and transcripts of grand jury testimony and did not hear anyone say Pinnick shot “into or inside” the car.

“To dismiss [the indictment] is the highest hurdle for a defendant in a criminal case to get over,” Carlson said. “[Because you] must show the due process violation affected the grand jury’s decision. ... There were many questions asked about the gun that was found and issues regarding your statement.”

About 1:20 a.m. Aug. 23, 2015, Sjontre Thompson and his cousin, Keyshaunna

Barefield, were leaving a party at the Fairmont Housing Project in Joliet in a silver Chevrolet Cruze. According to police, when Barefield put the vehicle in reverse, Pinnick took out a handgun and shot at them. Thompson was killed and Barefield was injured.

But Barefield and Pinnick told police they’d been having a friendly conversation when Pinnick drew a gun and started shooting at unknown attackers, according to a motion filed by defense attorney Jeff Tomczak.

Pinnick was on parole for a gun possession charge at the time of the shoot-

ing. He was allegedly carrying a revolver when he was taken into custody five days later, though Thompson and Barefield were shot by a semi-automatic .40-caliber handgun.

While Carlson did not dismiss the charges, he told Pinnick the witness statements could be a “tremendous factual issue” when the case comes to trial.

Tomczak also filed a motion asking prosecutors to have any spent .40-caliber shell casings recovered by Joliet and Will County Sheriff’s police in the past nine months be compared to the ones found at the crime scene.

Mokena doctor sentenced to jail, community service for desecrating girl’s gravesite

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A doctor has had his license suspended and will spend time in jail for desecrating a grave to upset his ex-wife’s divorce attorney.

Robert A. Bonzani, 50, of Mokena, pleaded guilty in February to charges of theft and vandalism for spray painting and stealing photographs and a Christmas tree from the grave of Kiley Jaquays, the daughter of local attorney Edward Jaquays, in December 2014. Kiley Jaquays, 17, died Dec. 24, 2002, when

she fell from a ledge while hiking in a cave in Utah.

Bonzani, a urologist at 21st Century Urology in Orland Park, sent letters to Jaquays and his wife claiming the attorney “loved dollars more” than his daughter and combined the photos he’d taken with pornography downloaded from the internet, according to Special Prosecutor Dave Neal.

“Everything in me is screaming to ask for [the maximum] 364 days in jail.

This is an attack on the legal system [and] to take the loss of a child and turn that into some kind of revenge, what you

did, sir, is despicable,” Neal said.

Attorney Donald Dewilkins agreed his client’s actions were “heinous” but noted Bonzani has sought psychological treatment and volunteered for community service at the Will-Grundy Medical Clinic, though last week the state board suspended his medical license for three months as a result of his guilty plea.

Jaquays told Judge Dave Carlson that Bonzani’s actions were “the epitome of cowardice and despicability.”

Bonzani apologized and said he was “horrified and disgusted” with himself.

Carlson said Bonzani had topped a

number of “murderers, rapists and drug dealers” with his attack on the law by menacing a lawyer who was doing his job.

Carlson ordered Bonzani to perform 480 hours of community service, reimburse Jaquays $1,287 for the damage and donate $1,200 to a charity that benefits children. He then ordered Bonzani to spend three months in jail. Bonzani was taken into custody but Carlson said he will reconsider that part of the sentence Friday if Bonzani can present how he will provide financial support to his children while his license is suspended.

Trustees OK phase two of storm sewer improvements

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media correspondent SHOREWOOD – The Shorewood Board of Trustees approved Tuesday a bid for $350,342.50 for phase two of the Parkshore Drive storm sewer improvements.

Village Engineer Bryan Welch of Christopher B. Burke Engineering explained to the board a unique situation that occurred during the bid process, which opened April 27.

“I recommend to award the bid to D.E. Thompson for the work. They are the same contractor on the other project [phase one] last year. There was another bid that was $8,000 lower, but the bid came back incomplete, so I ask you to reject that bid due to it being incomplete,” Welch said.

The board approved his recommendation; the other bid was officially rejected.

Welch said the project will not change where the water will go, but instead of being drained through ditches and culverts, the water will now move through underground pipes to eliminate ponding.

“This entire area is terrible, so this project has been a long time coming,” Shorewood Mayor Rick Chapman said. “I’ve talked to the people who live [on] Parkshore Drive and they want to say thank you to the board for making this happen. After rainstorms, people have 2 to 3 feet of water in front of their house for weeks.”

Trustee Steve Brockman brought a motion to the board to reappoint four members of the Planning and Zoning Commission.

Chapman also during the meeting clarified an incident that occurred Saturday night in Shorewood. Between 10 p.m. and midnight Saturday, “there was an accidental trigger of sirens in Shorewood and people are wondering what happened,” he said. “Nobody gave the order, but they went off anyway.”

Shorewood Police Chief Aaron Klima said that “the night-shift dispatchers were under a training exercise at that time. They punched in the proper codes, but did not hit transmit, yet the sirens went off anyway.”

Klima wanted residents to know dispatchers need to train in case of an actual emergency. The equipment has been replaced and Klima said hopefully it won’t happen again.

Chapman said he understood that these things can happen, he just did not want a “cry wolf” situation where people do not respond to the sirens because of inconsistencies.

JOLIET – Five people were taken into custody Wednesday afternoon after Joliet police chased down a stolen car.

The incident began when the owner of a 2000 Subaru Impreza that had been reported stolen to the Will County Sheriff’s Office was driving at 1:50 p.m. near Cass and Collins streets in downtown Joliet and saw the car, according to Joliet Police Department Deputy Chief Ed Gregory.

Police met the vehicle’s owner at Benton Street and Parks Avenue, Gregory said, and as the owner was speaking with officers, the car drove past.

Law enforcement located the vehicle at Cass Street and Eastern Avenue and attempted to stop it, according to Gregory, when a 14-year-old, who was taken into custody, jumped out of the moving car with a loaded gun.

The vehicle then traveled west on Clinton Street to Chicago Street, Gregory said, where it rear-ended a Pontiac Grand Prix at a flashing stop signal.

then left the vehicle and ran away on foot, but was intercepted by police at Chicago and Van Buren streets.

In the back of the stolen car were three passengers, Gregory said.

The 14-year-old was charged with unlawful use of a weapon, criminal trespass to a vehicle, no firearm owner identification card and resisting or obstructing police, according to Joliet police Lt. Robert Brown. The runaway driver was charged with fleeing or attempting to elude police, resisting or obstructing police and possession of a stolen vehicle.

One of the passengers, a 19-year-old named Christopher Ortiz, of Joliet, was charged with criminal trespass to a vehicle, Brown said, and booked into the Will County Jail. Ortiz also was wanted by the Will County Sheriff’s Office because of an outstanding warrant. The remaining two passengers were both juveniles and were charged with criminal trespass to a vehicle, Brown said.

The driver of the Grand Prix, a 36-year-old woman, was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet as a precaution, Gregory said.

Police pursuit of stolen car ends with 5 taken into custody

Joliet attorney cited after traffic incident, social media conflict

By ANNA SCHIER aschier@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Joliet attorney was cited Wednesday for multiple offenses after being involved in a traffic altercation Monday.

Elizabeth Johnson said she went Wednesday to the Joliet Police Department and received citations for failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident, failing to provide information and expired registration.

The traffic incident occurred Monday afternoon at Caton Farm and Von Esch roads in Joliet and sparked a firestorm of online commentary Tuesday.

According to Joliet Police Deputy Chief Ed Gregory – who provided information from the reports generated by law enforcement’s response to Monday’s incident – a Chrysler Town & Country van was rear-ended by a Ford F-450 pickup truck about 2:30 p.m. at a stop sign on Von Esch Road north of Caton Farm Road.

Both drivers exited their vehicles, according to the police reports, and the driver of the pickup admitted that she had hit the van, but refused to provide any information about her identity or

insurance and left the scene before police arrived. The van sustained no apparent damage in the incident.

On Monday night, a photograph was posted on a personal Facebook page of a woman who the poster alleged fled the incident. The poster stated that her aunt was hit by the woman pictured, and also alleged that the woman pictured claimed to be a lawyer and refused to give her information.

The original post was shared to other Facebook groups, and several commenters who saw the online posts speculated the woman was Johnson, a Joliet lawyer and recent Democratic Grundy County state’s attorney candidate who was defeated in the March primary elections by Brooke Shupe.

Johnson said Tuesday there was no crash, but rather a confrontation that started when Johnson almost pulled out in front of the other driver. She said she had hired a civil attorney and was considering filing a lawsuit for defamation.

The other driver, Dawn Brunker, confirmed Wednesday she made the initial report to police, but decried Johnson’s version of events. Johnson declined to offer further comment.

ROMEOVILLE – Romeoville trustees took action last week on two items aimed in part at making the village more business-friendly, and also broke ground on a new retail center.

“Things are coming together,” Mayor John Noak said. “It’s just a very exciting time.”

A big part of the excitement for Noak was the Village Board’s unanimous approval of the Romeoville Reinvestment Program, an incentive initiative for owners of home-based businesses who want to relocate to commercial districts and homeowners interested in improving the appearance of their residences.

Under the program, home-based business owners would receive fee waivers and matching grants, according to village documents, with veterans who are business owners being eligible for additional funds.

Owners of single-family homes and townhouses built before 1980 also can get assistance from the village on im-

provements to the appearance of their residence, specifically room additions; driveway upgrades; siding, window and door replacements; and covered porches.

Incentives include tax rebates, match funding and fee waivers.

For senior and veteran homeowners, landscaping also qualifies as part of the program, and those homeowners are eligible for higher incentives as well.

Noak said the program was the result of several conversations and potential initiatives that were brought together to bridge possible financial gaps for owners of businesses and homes.

Also last week, the board unanimously passed a franchise agreement with MetroNet to provide a fiber network and support Internet service connections with speeds up to 1 gigabyte for residential customers and wide area network services of more than 10 gigabytes for businesses, as well as phone service, village documents state.

CHANNAHON – There were no injuries as a result of a house fire Tuesday night in Channahon, although one resident was displaced.

The Channahon Fire Protection District was dispatched at 10:03 p.m. to the 24000 block of South Cardinal Road for reports of smoke coming from the garage of a single-story ranch house. When firefighters arrived, there was visible smoke coming from the residence.

According to a news release from the district, firefighters brought the fire under control within 20 minutes of leaving the fire station. The sole occupant in the house was alerted to the fire by smoke detectors and escaped unharmed.

The initial investigation showed the fire started in the garage and spread into the attic. How it started and the estimated cost of damage were undetermined as of Wednesday afternoon, the news release stated. The occupant will temporarily live with relatives.

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois State Police is alerting residents to be wary of a phone scam circulating throughout the state.

The scam includes a person calling and claiming to be associated with ISP or the “Illinois police.” The caller will ask for a donation, or advise the resident there is a warrant out for his or her arrest, and that the person needs to send money, according to a news release from ISP. Caller ID devices may list the caller as “Illinois Police” or “Illinois State Police,” according to the news release. The phone number associated with the call is usually 618-855-0185, but phone scammers can change the number displayed on caller ID devices.

“Citizens should be wary of calls soliciting money regardless of what number is displayed, particularly if threats are made by the caller or they become pushy,” ISP said in the news release.

State police will not call to ask for money on behalf of the department or ask residents to send money for any reason, according to the news release. Those who believe they are a victim of a phone scam should call 800-243-0618 and report it to the Office of the Illinois Attorney General.

Raul Garcia, age 66, of Joliet, and formerly Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood, passed Tuesday, May 10, 2016, after a courageous battle against cancer.

Born Feb. 25, 1950, in Chicago to the late Jesusita (nee Gutierrez) and Roy Garcia and was a

graduate of St. Rita High School, Class of 1967.

Survived by his wife, Lani (nee Moreno); daughter, Isabel Macedo; son, Paul Garcia and granddaughter, Sophia Macedo.

Raul was a U.S. Air Force veteran who served during Vietnam. He retired from Carmuse after 32 years of service. He was a history buff who enjoyed reading.

JAMES E. GAST Born: July 7, 1941 Died: May 9, 2016

James E. Gast, 74, died peacefully after a short but intense battle with cancer at Joliet Area Community Hospice on May 9, 2016, in the company of family.

Jim was born on July 7, 1941, at Silver Cross Hospital to Stanton and Clare (Brock) Gast. He was raised on a farm in Manhattan and attended St. Joseph’s Grade School. He was a member of Lincoln-Way High School’s class of 1959. While at Lincoln-Way, he was active on the football and baseball teams, serving as captain of both his senior year. He was also a member of the Future Farmers of America, was a representative in Springfield for Boy’s State and was on the Student Council. Jim Attended St. Ambrose College and Southern Illinois University where he majored in agriculture.

In 1965, Jim married Mary Lou Cummins and together they raised two children, Mark E. (Christy) Gast of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Melissa (Alan) Breitbart of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Brother to Kathleen (Dennis) Galle, Ray (Jo) Gast, Rita (Charlie) Russella; and brother-in-law, Vance Cummins.

He became Papa to his wonderful grandchildren, Ryan and Alec Gast and James and Mia Breitbart.

He was Uncle Jim to his much-loved nieces and nephews, Juli Galle, Mike (Erin) Galle, Beth (Kameron) deVente, Jeff (Katrina) Galle, Christopher (Melanie) Galle, Andrea (Kieran) Noonan, Nick (Meg) Galle, Kate (Sean) Ramswick, Pete Russella and Joe Russella, Melissa (Hugh) Rink, David Morgan and Kristen Gast. He will always be remembered by the many friends of his children

who spent many hours at the Gast home over the years.

Jim began his career as a salesman with the International Harvester Company in 1964. Jim worked in various management positions for the next 10 years in Illinois, Missouri, Kansas and Minnesota. His last assignment was in Warren, Minnesota, where he managed a company store from 1972 to 1974. During those two years, the desire for having his own dealership was kindled.

In December 1974, Jim purchased Moss Equipment in Joliet and created Gast International, an International Harvester Farm Equipment store.

After five years in the original facilites, Jim and his employees moved into a new, larger facility in which to conduct his growing business. His dealership has been featured in many International Harvester advertising brochures, TV commercials and company magazines.

In 1982, he served as President of the International Harvester North American Agriculture Dealer Council representing U.S. and Canadian Ag. Dealers. He has served on various advisory councils at Lincoln-Way High School, Joliet Junior College and St. Francis Academy along with being past chairman of the Will County Heart Fund Drive. He was always active in the Farm Equipment Association and was president in 1983. Jim has been involved in many Illinois Retail Dealer’s Association activities and served as president in 1984. Jim retired in the year 2000.

Just how many of us know what we want to be when we grow up? Jim knew – at the ripe old age of nine or ten – that he wanted to “ride ‘em or sell ’em”. (Farmall’s that is!)

His proudest accomplishment was being elected to the Board of Education of Lincoln-Way Community High School in 1983. He actively and devotedly served on the board from 1983 to 2016 – a total of 33 years. He was selflessly dedicated to the school, the students and his community.

Jim was a community relations ambassador for the Lincoln-Way High School District 210. During his time on the board, he was at the forefront of gaining support and improving communication from the high school district to parents, students, community members and employees.

Jim served as president of the Board of Education three times: 1989-1991, 1997-1998 and 2003-2005 and served as the board liaison to the Lincoln-Way District 210 foundation for Educational Excellence from 1999 to 2001.

As evidence of his strong commitment to communication, Jim routinely attended activities, academic ceremonies, graduations and sports events at all four high schools in the district. Jim (and his fellow board members) represented the district at each of the communities chambers of commerce business expos and other community sponsored events.

Jim also actively listened to his community as he attended every community meeting the district hosted including senior citizen lunches; realtor, banker and elected village officials meetings; clergy and area school district official’s events; breakfasts with freshman parents, community leader day; and all Lincoln-Way Foundation functions.

With his background in business and farming, Jim as been a strong supporter of the district’s vocational and fine arts programs. His support

of a partnership for an Agri-Science Center in conjunction with a neighboring village succeeded in securing an 8-acre Agri-Science Center.

Jim also took a leadership role with the Lincoln-Way Alumni Planning Committee and served on their board of directors for more than six years. As a graduate of Lincoln-Way High School class of ‘59, Jim communicated the importance of the schools’ Alumni Association.

Additionally, Jim was one of the leaders of the district’s 10-year reading program. This program became a graduation requirement by our Board of Eduation and was communicated to the public by the administrative team and Board of Education members. Jim Gast was one of the presenters of the district’s reading program, “Ascending the Reading Summit: 10 Step Success Story” as part of the Carousel of Panels at the Illinois Association of School Board’s Annual Conference in 2010. One of the most gratifying things he was involved in through Lincoln-Way was the Special Education Joint Agreement Governing Board of District 843 in which he was a member from 2001 to 2015. He served as secretary from 2003 to 2006, president from 2007 to 2009 and vice president from 2013 to 2015.

Jim Gast served over 45,000 Lincoln-Way students during his 33 years as a Board of Education member. He gave thousands of hours involved in activities to improve support and understanding of our school district. His passion was to serve all students and to continue to support programs that improve student achievement. He well deserved and twice earned INSPRA’s Distinguished Service Award in the Board of Education category.

Jim Gast was a hard-working, self-made man who was dedicated to his family, his business and his community. His strong, quiet exterior veiled his devoted and generous heart, and he made a difference in his community. Jim and his wife, Mary Lou, always had an open door to welcome friends and enjoyed hosting parties for friends, family and “the kids”.

Family will receive friends at Kurtz Memorial Chapel, 102 E. Francis Road, New Lenox from 3 to 8 p.m., Friday, May 13, 2016. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Joseph’s Church, 235 W. North Street, Manhattan, on May 14, 2016, at 11 am.

Senate campaign targets veteran’s record

By SARA BURNETT The Associated Press CHICAGO – Rep. Tammy Duckworth lost both legs when her helicopter was shot down in Iraq, then went on to hold leadership roles in the Illinois and U.S. Veterans Affairs departments.

Yet, the Democratic Senate hopeful now finds her record on helping military veterans under attack by her opponent, Republican Sen. Mark Kirk, as he tries to hold on to a seat Democrats believe is key to their efforts to regain the Senate majority.

Kirk, one of the GOP’s most endangered incumbents, has accused Duck-

worth of failing to protect veterans in her care and putting her political ambitions ahead of her duties. He’s also touted the more than two decades he served in the Navy Reserve and his own high-profile efforts to highlight problems at the VA. This week his campaign launched an online ad featuring a hearing on a lawsuit two Illinois VA employees filed against Duckworth, accusing her of retaliating against them when she led the agency – complaints that have twice been dismissed. Kirk also has repeated claims by two whistleblowers who said Duckworth ignored their reports of misconduct at a federal VA hospital west of

Chicago.

Trying to take down Duckworth on veterans’ issues is a bold move for Kirk, with even some Republicans saying they don’t think voters will buy it. The strategy also could backfire. Kirk acknowledged during his 2010 Senate bid that he had exaggerated some of his own military record. And he risks alienating voters who see Duckworth as a hero.

Garrett Anderson, who lost part of one arm and suffered traumatic brain injury in a roadside-bomb attack in Iraq, said Duckworth was the first service member the U.S. Army sniper spoke to when he woke up from a coma at Walter Reed National Military Medi-

cal Center in 2005.

The 39-year-old University of Illinois graduate student plans to vote for Kirk this fall for a simple reason: Anderson is a Republican. But he said the ads targeting her are out of bounds and called Duckworth “a nice person” who has a strong track record of looking out for veterans.

“I’ve seen a few of [the ads] and I don’t like them because she served her country very well, and she’s a decorated war veteran,” Anderson said.

Kirk’s campaign said Duckworth’s record is a legitimate area for criticism, and that there’s no shortage of people who agree.

Bernadine A. Lincoln, 89, of Morris, passed away peacefully April 29, 2016, at Brookdale Senior Living in Joliet. Born July 16, 1926, in Vinton, Iowa, she was the daughter of the late Lester S. and Ida (Harper) Hoon.

She was raised in Vinton, Iowa, graduating from high school in Ames, Iowa. After high school, Bernadine worked at Wright Patterson Air Force Base during World War II, later attending Iowa State University where she studied library science. Bernadine also worked for Dr. Enrico Fermi.

In 1949, Bernadine married Bill Lincoln, who preceded her in death in 2008. The couple moved many times for Bill’s work, living in Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Arkansas and Texas, before settling in Morris in 1969.

Bernadine was an active member and taught Sunday School at the First United Methodist Church. She was active in Martha’s Circle. She was an avid reader and a wonderful cook. She also enjoyed gardening, swimming, riding her bicycle, golf and bridge.

She is survived by one son, Craig (Diane) Lincoln of Morris; two grandchildren, Katie and Mark, both students at the University of Illinois; one brother-in-law, Larry (Betty) Lincoln; one niece, Doris (Bob) Campbell; one nephew, David (Nancy) Lincoln; and three great-nieces.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 21, 2016, at the First United Methodist Church, 118 W. Jackson Street in Morris. A Celebration of Bernadine’s Life will immediately follow at 11 a.m., officiated by Pastor Robert Sathuri and Pastor Laura Wilson-Underwood.

Their public differences are overshadowing prospective voters’ movement toward Trump and his own efforts to broaden his appeal as the general election campaign takes shape.

His likely November opponent, Democrat Hillary Clinton, still has Sen. Bernie Sanders opposing her for her party’s nomination. But she all but ignored him Wednesday as she campaigned in Blackwood, New Jersey.

Clinton focused instead on Trump’s statement in an Associated Press interview that he doesn’t plan to release his tax returns until an ongoing audit is completed. Should Trump not

release his returns before the November election it would mark a break from precedent for presidential nominees.

“So you’ve got to ask yourself why doesn’t he want to release it? Yeah, well, we’re going to find out,” Clinton told supporters.

Meanwhile, more Republican voters appear to be moving behind Trump, despite big-name holdouts such as Ryan, both former president Bushes and the party’s 2012 nominee, Mitt Romney.

Almost two in three Republican-leaning voters now view Trump favorably, compared to 31 percent who view him unfavorably, according to a national Gallup Poll taken last week. The numbers represent a near reversal from Gallup’s survey in early March.

“Despite the contentious primary process, the party is healing itself and scabbing over,” Republican pollster Greg Strimple said.

Ryan insisted Wednesday that Republican Party unity is paramount, even if he’s not yet willing to endorse the GOP’s presumptive presidential nominee.

“What we’re trying to do is be as constructive as possible and have a real unification,” Ryan said at a Capitol Hill news conference.

“We have to be at full strength to win this election.”

Trump is to meet with Republican leaders Thursday morning at the Republican National Committee headquarters. The private meetings represent his first tangible steps toward repairing his strained relationships with the nation’s most powerful elected Republicans.

Conservative crisis after Trump What to say now? What to do now? These are the questions many Republicans were asking as Donald Trump’s victory in the Indiana primary seemed to clear the way for him to be the GOP presidential nominee in November.

During a gathering of conservative women in media and public policy in Washington, D.C., the next day, people were talking about their career-change plans. Regrets, sadness, anger and recriminations were in the air that day. Shock set in for experts who thought the Trump campaign nothing more than a passing distraction. But when distractions are everywhere – becoming the focal point of many lives, and our culture, it sometimes feels like – it’s a natch the presidential race would fall victim to our habits, too.

“What the Trump nomination has revealed is that American conservatism, or whatever is left of it, was a mile wide and an inch deep,” observes Francis J. Beckwith, professor of philosophy at Baylor University. “A once great political movement ... is now led by a conspiracy-mongering, demagogic, narcissistic loudmouth, championed by assorted boot-licking sycophants.”

I will say that many good people support Trump. Even people who value tradition, manners, liberty, law and wisdom. But they don’t see any presidential candidates who are serious about these things left in the race. And so they’re going with the candidate who might just “blow things up” as many a person tells me.

“He’ll do something different,” they tell me. Just what that is – your guess is as good as mine.

Donald Trump for president is a symptom of much bigger problems.

So what to do? Matthew J. Franck, director of the William E. and Carol G. Simon Center on Religion and the Constitution at the Witherspoon Institute, says that while reasons like the future makeup of the Supreme Court could certainly be used to consider voting for Trump, he’s skeptical.

“When has Trump demonstrated a pattern of promise-keeping, or inspired confidence that he would fight on a ground that he has never been interested in capturing?” he asks.

Others suggest the political equivalent of straitjacketing the nominee at the Cleveland convention, using such stratagems as making the vice-pres-

idential role a more significant one.

“But think about that,” Franck says.

“It means that for the first time in our history, a major party would be planning to govern against and not with the leadership of a president it nominated. What has never been done is unlikely to be done.”

Chad Pecknold, a professor at my alma mater, the Catholic University of America, says if the choice comes down to Hillary Clinton vs. Donald Trump in November, he can’t vote for either. “In my view, Trump and Clinton will both advance morally flawed positions – one in a fairly predictable but nevertheless vicious way, and the other in a completely unpredictable, corrupt and capricious way. I believe both candidates send America headlong into potentially irreversible decline, into the gravest of moral evils, severing whatever is left of our tenuous grasp on the best of our founding principles, detaching us finally from the median common goods that have made the country prosper. I can’t participate in it.”

What ails us is a disordered view of what politics is about. We seem to have a bipartisan problem of looking for a savior in a president – it’s the stuff both of Barack Obama’s “We are the ones we have been waiting for” campaign and the Republican ancestor worship of Ronald Reagan.

The presidency is vitally important, of course. But not in the ways we’ve been talking about. Trump didn’t start the fire, and no perfect presidential candidate was ever going to exist to put it out. That’s our work. So walk away from the TV, stop watching the coverage of every rally, and do something to renew and rebuild civil society. Right in front of you is where great things can happen, if you’re not sitting around waiting for Washington to work miracles that never were its industry anyway.

Illinois lawmakers always have an excuse not to streamline government The issue: Eliminate the office of lieutenant governor in the state of Illinois.

The background: The office has no constitutional duties other than to be ready to step in if something happens to the governor.

Proposals to eliminate the office have been around for decades.

What we’ve supported: We think the office is unnecessary and should be eliminated, saving taxpayers about $1.6 million a year.

What’s new: It looked as if the General Assembly was finally going to take an axe to the “lite guv’s” office. Rep. David McSweeney, R-Barrington Hills, introduced legislation to allow voters to have the final say on whether Illinois should continue to have a lieutenant governor. McSweeney’s measure passed in the Illinois House by a vote of 95-10.

However, things got sticky in the Illinois Senate. State Sen. Bill Brady, R-Bloomington, wanted to amend the legislation to change the line of succession so that the governor’s replacement would

be someone from his own party.

McSweeney’s bill had the attorney general taking over if anything ever happened to the governor, currently Republican Bruce Rauner. Lisa Madigan, a Democrat, is the attorney general.

Just introducing the amendment basically killed the idea.

There wouldn’t have been enough time, unless lawmakers were called into special session, for both chambers to approve the amended legislation.

Our conclusion: Whether it’s eliminating the office of lieutenant governor, merging the financial offices of comptroller and treasurer or trying something else to streamline Illinois government, lawmakers always seem to find an excuse not to downsize.

These proposals have been around for years and have passed in one chamber or the other, yet they never receive final approval.

Lawmakers love to talk about making government more efficient, but in the end, it’s only talk.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

JOLIET – Thank goodness for small favors.

With the Joliet Catholic baseball team destined for Class 3A in the postseason and Marian Catholic in 4A, the Hilltoppers will have nothing to do with Mark DiLuia and the Spartans for the remainder of this baseball season.

DiLuia blasted two long home runs and drove in four runs Wednesday afternoon at Gillespie Field, spoiling what otherwise was a solid pitching performance by Hilltoppers senior

right-hander Jared Jones, as the Spartans won the East Suburban Catholic Conference game, 9-0.

Marian breezed in the first game of the series, 10-0, Monday as DiLuia dominated on the mound. He was at first base Wednesday and belted a three-run home run that banged off the scoreboard in the first inning and a solo shot that cleared the scoreboard in the third inning to stake Marian right-hander Matt Mulhearn to a 4-0 lead.

“He had great stuff against us Monday,” JCA coach Jared Voss said of DiLuia “He dominated. He crushed the

ball at the plate that day, too, but this was a much better hitter’s day.”

The Hilltoppers (13-13, 8-6) thus are mired in a three-game losing streak, which is not unfamiliar territory.

“Inconsistency has been the thing for us,” Voss said. “A couple times we won three in a row, and a couple times we’ve lost three in a row.”

Marian (19-8, 10-6) put the game away with a five-run sixth inning. Before that, the Hilltoppers had opportunities to cut into the Spartans’ lead but could not get the big hit.

“From a team batting average standpoint, you would not say we are

in bad shape,” Voss said. “It’s just that at times we struggle to put our hits together.”

In the bottom of the second inning, for example, Jack Surin reached on a bunt single and Jack Naal singled to left. But a popup and strikeout ended the inning.

In the fourth, Drake Fellows dropped a perfect bunt down the thirdbase line for a hit leading off, and Surin singled to left. But a fly to left, a pickoff of Fellows and a strikeout ended the threat.

The Hilltoppers finished with five hits, two by Surin.

But nine of their outs were made on popups or flyouts, and they had two runners picked off.

“A couple of innings we had guys on base,” Voss said.

“We had some opportunities, but popups and pickoffs ended our threats.”

Jones, who gloved a line drive and turned it into a double play in the fifth inning, worked into the sixth.

Marian had scored once in that inning to stretch its lead to 5-0 and had two runners on with two outs when he was lifted.

“Jared is a guy that going into the playoffs, we are going to count on,” Voss said. “He will continue to work on making good pitches.”

Voss gave four nonstarters an at-bat in the early and middle innings.

“We are trying to establish who will be the guys we can count on to do a job off the bench in the playoffs,” he said. “We will need hitters to come off the bench, and we have to find out who can play a role. We have to see who we can use where.”

Meanwhile, Marian and JCA are on the fringe as the ESCC title chase hits the home stretch. Both have six league losses. Notre Dame and Marist entered Wednesday’s play with four conference losses and Carmel had five.

Lockport coach Tom Razo is understandably pleased with where his team is at right now.

“We performed well today and a lot of kids stepped up and had personal bests,” Razo said. “Derrius kind of sticks out doing his stuff and our 4x2 relay ran lights out and even our 4x1 got third and ran their best time of the year. It seems like everything is jelling together at the right time and the conference meet at Bolingbrook will be competitive.”

Two other top-10 efforts were turned in by Plainfield North relay teams. The Tigers 4x100 of Carlos Baggett, Hunter Houslet, Joe Stiffend and Clay Paysen went 41.87, which ranks second to a 41.63 turned in by East St. Louis the following day. And their 4x400 featuring Jordan Gumila,

Houslet, Cory Hrobowski and Baggett ran 3:22.8, which ranks ninth.

Those types of efforts have Tigers coach Tony Holler even more excited than usual.

“This meet was probably better than a sectional,” Holler said. “In our 4x1, we not only ran a school record but broke a 33-year meet record. I’ve coached for 35 years and it was the first time we’ve ever been under 42 seconds, so that was kind of a wild thing for us.

“We’re gearing up for our conference meet and I think it’s the best conference in the state. That’s something to look forward to and then we go into the Neuqua [Valley] Sectional, which is just loaded. But it’s exciting be around greatness since it raises your own kids up.”

Speaking of the Southwest Prairie Conference, Plainfield East and Plainfield South also turned in fine showings at the Jackson Invite and are ready for their league meet before they join North and Minooka among others in the rugged Neuqua Valley Sectional.

The Bengals have a top-10 time in the 4x200 relay while the Cougars got a top-10 effort from John Partee in the

1600. Coach Nick Lundin’s Indians have turned in top-10 times in the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 relays while Soren Knudsen (1600), Justin Wolz (300 hurdles) and Quintin Durov (high jump) also have posted marks that rank among the top-10.

“Coach Razo and Lockport do a great job of having this meet right before conference,” South coach Jason Crowe said. “We love being here since it’s great competition with all of the teams they have. It’s a good tuneup right before the championship season.

We have a good group that’s very high character and their hard work is going to be paying off.”

The only other top-10 showing from over the weekend was turned in by Bolingbrook’s Justin Rivers, whose 6-8 in high jump ties him for fifth statewide. Coach Art Pahl’s Raiders also have received top-10 times this year in both hurdles events from Jaylan McConico.

Three other area individuals have also turned in efforts which rank them among the top-10 in their events. They are Lemont’s Chris Thompson in the 400, Lincoln-Way West’s Evan Mitchell in the 3200 and Plainfield Central’s Mike Lyons in high jump.

Saints alive – USF baseball earns berth in CCAC finals

The University of St. Francis baseball team beat Robert Morris, 7-2, Wednesday afternoon to advance to the championship round of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament.

The seventh-seeded Saints eliminated the sixth seed Eagles, who had beaten them Saturday in the double-elimination tournament.

The victory sets up a noon start on Thursday opposite No. 3 seeded Saint Xavier, the only undefeated team left.

A win in the first game by the Saints would force a winner-take-all second game. The winner will get the CCAC’s second NAIA National Championship opening-round bid.

St. Francis continued to hit the ball as the Saints collected 12 hits on the day. However, it was the performance of sophomore Kevin Mampe (Lincoln-Way Central) on the mound that impressed. Mampe went all nine innings, scattering eights hits, striking out 10 and walking one. He gave

Senior Zach Barkdull went 4 for 4 with a walk and two RBIs. He drove in Mampe (2 for 4, 3 runs), who led off the game with a single.

“I’m seeing the ball real well right now,” Barkdull said. “I don’t want to chase anything out of the zone because that is when I get in trouble.

I want to see something across the plate early in the count. We are playing real loose right now. We have that swagger back that we had on our trip to Florida early in the season.”

Senior Rick Faron continued his hot hitting as he and junior Nick Fleschauer (Minooka, Joliet Junior College) also collected two RBIs each.

Mampe about halfway through the season, and he thinks it has really helped the Saints turn the season around.

“I love hitting behind Kevin [Mampe],” he said. “He is such a great hitter and seems always to be on when I come up. It gives me a lot of options to bunt, hit away and be in a great position to help the team. We, as a team, are really hitting well now, plus our pitching has done well and the attitude is that we are not going to lose a game.”

“It was a great performance by Kevin Mampe,” St. Francis coach Brian Michalak said. “He didn’t look good early and it was let’s try and just get one more inning early. Then everything seem to come together. Coming out of losers’ bracket, pitching is so vital and Kevin really helped that out today.

“We are hitting the ball well, moving runners over and scoring in multiple innings and we had no errors today, which is all good to see.

“We will be here ready to go at noon tomorrow, it’s a good position to be in, playing for the title and a national bid.”

As area boys track and field teams take part in conference meets in anticipation of next week’s sectionals, many have already seen performances which place them in contention for picking up state medals the following weekend at the IHSA finals in Charleston.

A total of 11 individuals in 14 events as well as seven relays have earned spots among the state’s top-10 rankings that are listed on www.dyestatil.com.

Three of those individual efforts and three relay performances were posted this past weekend, with five of those coming at Lockport’s Bill Jackson Invite, which featured two other individual showings and two relays from other schools which also rank in the top 10.

Leading the individuals this past weekend was Lockport’s Derrius Rodgers, who had a 10.6 in the 100 and a 21.42 in the 200. The 100 time ranks second while the 200 is third. The only Class 3A competitor with better times is Galesburg’s Josh Eiker, who beat Rodgers in both events when they met on April 22 at Downers Grove South.

The Porters also turned in a 1:27.62 in the 4x200 behind Chris Gargano, Rodgers, Jesse Bustami and Sheldon Snapp, which ranks as the fourth-

Rangers come back to beat White Sox

By STEPHEN HAWKINS The Associated Press ARLINGTON, Texas – Adrian Beltre and the Texas Rangers sure know how to make a comeback, or three.

Beltre had the tiebreaking RBI single soon after his long errorless streak ended and his team fell behind, and the Rangers overcame three deficits for the second consecutive game in less than 24 hours against the American League’s top team, beating the White Sox, 6-5, on Wednesday.

“To keep grinding away, we never gave up,” outfielder Ian Desmond said. “We had a goal to win that series and we came out and did it. It’s a good sign.”

The Rangers (20-15) moved a season-high five games over .500, while the Sox still had the AL’s best record at 23-12.

In an eventful game for third basemen, Beltre had a throwing error in top of the sixth to end his streak of 44 games without an error that dated back to September and was the second longest in the career for the four-time Gold Glove winner – he had a 53-game streak in 2006.

That error led to an unearned run that put the Sox ahead, 5-4. But the Rangers got even in the bottom of the inning on Desmond’s second RBI single before Beltre had the go-ahead hit.

Sox third baseman Todd Frazier got his 10th RBI in the three-game series with his homer leading off the fourth. But he left the game in the bottom of that inning when he cut his lower lip and needed five stitches after falling hard face-first into one of the arm rests attached to the seats in the first row while

chasing Prince Fielder’s foul pop. Frazier said he also bit a small hole through his tongue.

“My momentum took me into the stands, and my head went right into the arm rest.

Basically, I felt my tongue went through my bottom lip,” Frazier said. “Ice it up a lot and I’ll be good to go for Friday.”

Tony Barnette (2-2) got the final out in the sixth after taking over for starter Cole Hamels before Tom Wilhelmsen, Jake Diekman and Sam Dyson each worked an inning. Dyson hit the first batter to start the ninth, but benefited from a strikeout-caught stealing double play for his first save.

Dan Jennings (1-1) allowed one run in 12/3 innings.

After Frazier’s third homer in the series, and 11th of the season, tied the game, Melky Cabrera followed with a single and Lawrie homered into the Sox bullpen in left field for a 4-2 lead. Bullpen catcher Adam Ricks caught Lawrie’s deep fly, reaching up with his bare hand to make the grab.

Texas, which rallied late Tuesday night for a 13-11 win, had tied the series finale at 4 in the fifth when Fielder looped a two-run double down the left field line with the White Sox defense shifted the other way.

“It’s great to see these guys never quit,” Hamels said. “Everybody has a part in it. It’s been a fun 24 hours.”

Hamels struck out nine with no walks in 52/3 innings but also gave up nine hits, the most the ace left-hander has allowed in his 19 starts for the Rangers since they acquired him in a trade last summer. He ended up with a no decision and his career-best 11-game winning streak remained intact, although not extended.

PADRES 7-1, CUBS 4-0 Pomeranz leads Padres to doubleheader sweep of Cubs

By JOHN JACKSON The Associated Press CHICAGO – Drew Pomeranz tied a career high with 10 strikeouts in six scoreless innings and Christian Bethancourt hit a long solo home run to give the San Diego Padres a 1-0 victory over the Cubs Wednesday night and a sweep of a day-night doubleheader.

In the first game, Brett Wallace hit a threerun homer in San Diego’s four-run seventh inning, and the Padres stopped the Cubs’ eightgame win streak with a 7-4 victory.

Pomeranz (4-3) allowed just three hits and walked three. No Cubs runner advanced past second base while the left-hander was on the mound. Left-hander Brad Hand worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth inning and Fernando Rodney got the final three outs for his 10th save in 10 chances. He also picked up the save in Game 1.

The lack of offense wasted a strong start from John Lackey (4-2), who allowed just one run on three hits in eight innings.

Bethancourt, who now has three homers on the season, went 2 for 3. San Diego as a team

managed just three hits.

The Cubs, who have the best record in the major leagues at 25-8, hadn’t lost consecutive games this season before Wednesday. The Cubs batters struck out 14 times in the game.

Lackey retired the first 14 batters before Bethancourt broke up the perfect game with a majestic blast over the left-field bleachers and onto to Waveland Avenue.

The Cubs best scoring chance came in the eighth inning. With two out, Jason Heyward walked. Hand appeared to end the inning by getting Kris Bryant to pop up on the infield.

But shortstop Alexei Ramirez dropped the ball for an error, putting runners on first and third. Hand then walked Anthony Rizzo on four pitches to load the bases, but regrouped to strike out Jorge Soler to end the threat. It was Soler’s fourth strikeout of the game. The Cubs had a 4-2 lead entering the seventh inning of the first game. To that point, they were 18-2 this season when leading after six innings. But Pedro Strop (1-1) failed to retire any of the five batters he faced in the seventh and was charged with three runs and three hits. A throwing error also cost the Cubs a run in the decisive half-inning.

“I was able to throw a lot of firstpitch strikes today,” Davis said. “My off-speed pitches kept them off balance and it felt good being able to pick up the strikeouts. We have Mike Stevens

The Porters struck for three runs in the bottom of the second. Steven Hill (1 for 2, a walk and RBI) reached on an error. Lockport catcher Joey McGuire (2 for 2, hit by a pitch), singled Hill to third, where he scored the first Porters’ run on a balk by Sandburg starting and losing pitcher Jack Wolfe.

Nick Strysic’s bunt single was fielded and thrown over the first baseman, allowing McGuire’s courtesy runner, Josh Bentley, to score. Strysic scored the third run of the inning on Steve Salvino’s groundout.

“High energy was the name of our game today for us from the get-go,” McGuire said. “I was happy to help us out with the two singles today. Ben was outstanding. All of Ben’s off-speed pitches were amazing. Big win for us and we are looking forward to Friday.”

Mobil Pipe Line Company has applied to the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency for a federally enforceable state operating permit (FESOP) regulating air emissions from its Mokena Pipeline Station located at 10961 West 183rd Street in Mokena. “A great moment for the junior, Ben Davis, in his career,” Satunas said. “To compete so well against a great Sandburg team, is a credit to Ben. He kept them off balance all day and had two huge pickoffs at first.

“We hope to get better each game, and if we are able to win another conference championship, that would be great. We are just building.”

The 1990 amendments to the Clean Air Act require potentially major sources of air emissions to obtain federally enforceable operating permits. A FESOP permit allows a source that is potentially major to take operational limits in the permit so that it is a non-major source. The permit will contain federally enforceable limitations that restrict the facility’s emissions to non-major levels.

The permit will be enforceable by the USEPA, as well as the Illinois EPA.

Two words that epitomize top-quality high school baseball.

As in Wednesday’s game at Ed Flink Field, over the years the Porters and Eagles have squared off for first place in their conference. For years, it was for the mighty SICA West crown and featured the classic games between Lockport Hall of Fame coach Jim Hall and Sandburg Hall of Fame coach Doug Sutor.

More recently, the SouthWest Suburban Blue championship has been at stake, with Lockport’s Andy Satunas and Sandburg’s Jim Morsovillo at the controls. The entertainment value has remained high.

On a warm, comfortable afternoon at Ed Flink Field, Lockport junior right-hander Ben Davis was outstanding, scattering six hits and leading the Porters past the Eagles, 7-1. Lockport (14-10, 9-2) takes sole possession of first place over Sandburg (18-4, 8-3).

Plainfield East holds off Minooka

PLAINFIELD – When you glance at the box score from Wednesday’s Southwest Prairie Conference softball game between Plainfield East and Minooka, you see few differences.

Both sides got good pitching and played well defensively, which led to just a handful of hits. But it was something that doesn’t show up in the stats that proved to be the difference.

The Bengals put together a two-out rally in the fourth inning to get the initial run, while the Indians advanced runners to second and third with no outs in the fifth and couldn’t score.

After an exchange of solo home runs in the final two frames, East hung on for a 2-1 victory that assured it of remaining in the conference lead with three games remaining.

Callie Dutton tripled and scored, and later homered for the Bengals (214, 10-1), while Bianca Vozenilek tossed a four-hitter and struck out 11 to collect the victory. That offset a three-hit effort by Shannon Stuchly, while Sally Tyrell belted a home run for the Indians (9-12, 5-6).

“Both pitchers pitched real well and defense was pretty good on both sides,” Bengals coach Chris Morris said. “I was hoping that we could hit better but we got it done when we needed to. Callie was obviously big for us since she was responsible for both runs. And Bianca’s been great and when she’s had to make big pitches, she has. We knew that Minooka has a great program, so we’d be in for a battle and that’s what we got. It was a nice win.”

East’s fourth inning looked like it might be uneventful after the Indians got a double play ball. But Dutton made things interesting when she ripped a shot over two fielders in left, and then Lauren Urbanski lined a hot shot to first that went for an error and brought home Dutton.

In Minooka’s fifth, Stuchly led off with a double to left and courtesy runner Emily Himes took third on a single to center by Courtney Kurtz, who moved to second on the throw. However, Vozenilek responded to the threat by striking out the next three hitters that she faced.

“One of the things that our team does a really good job with is when not everyone is hitting well, somebody comes in and gets the run we need,” Dutton said. “After they got the double play, I knew that I had to get on base and then I crushed the ball and it felt so good. Our team does a really nice job of picking each other up and we have a really nice bond with each

On a day where a wet outfield resulted in not only a few dirty uniforms but also some real drama on plays, both sides got good defensive efforts from throughout the field.

“It was pretty messy out there,” East’s Amberly Rodriguez said. “I think that we’ve done a phenomenal job this year and have gotten close to each other. We’ve created a bond and that benefits us when we play together and we’re all supportive of each other and that helps pull us through. I like our energy and we’re really good at picking each other up when we get down. Once someone starts a rally, we’re able to hop on the wagon and support each other.”

Things really looked good for the Bengals after Dutton delivered another clutch two-out hit, this one a solo homer that was lined down the leftfield line to make it 2-0 in the sixth inning.

But Minooka continued to battle and was rewarded for that when Tyrell also smacked a shot down the left-field line to pull her team to 2-1.

One out later, Kurtz singled to get the tying run on base but Vozenilek worked out of trouble by getting two more strikeouts.

“It was a tough battle and they made one or two more offensive plays than we did and that’s what it came down to,” Indians coach Mark Brown said.

“In these last two weeks, you just want to be in close games because that’s the type of competition you’ll see come playoffs. Shannon battles and keeps us in games and her and our catcher, Julie (Czermiakowski), do a great job together. We’re not satisfied with the outcome but are with how our girls played.”

Lockport Christian man gives yoga a fresh stance

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com JOLIET – At 6 feet 4 inches, 270 pounds, 47 years old and with a deep faith in Christ, Bill Austin of Lockport is not a typical yogi.

But he’s a passionate one.

On April 5, Austin opened Living Water Yoga at Pilcher Park Nature Center with 33 students. He had one goal – to provide the community with an authentic experience that will lift them up and give them the opportunity to meet like-minded fellow students.

For novices, Austin is reassuring.

Most Living Water students have not previously taken a yoga class, Austin said. But classes are for the proficient, too, since everyone works at his or her own pace.

In addition to regular classes, Living Water Yoga also offers individual instruction and workshops. And despite the reluctance some Christians have to participate in yoga, the philosophy of yoga doesn’t contradict the Bible, Austin said.

“As a matter of fact, it actually overlaps quite well,” Austin said. “It’s an ethical code of the way you treat yourself, your own body and others is in every major religion, including Christianity.”

Devan Prince, 21, of Joliet, learned about Living Water Yoga through Facebook. Prince said she had previously learned yoga through YouTube videos but wasn’t certain she was executing the postures correctly.

When Prince realized her mother had gone to school with Austin, she felt more comfortable attending classes.

As it turned out, Prince was making mistakes in both the postures and in her breathing while performing the movements.

Prince now attends three one-hour classes each week and said yoga helps combat anxiety and stress. She encourages everyone to try it.

“It makes me feel more energized and more enlightened,” Prince said.

Merging belief with philosophy

Austin said he became a Christian at age 8. He had accompanied his uncle – who had just given his life to Christ – to MorningStar Mission in Joliet.

“I felt the presence of the Holy Spirit,” Austin said. “That was the beginning of my journey with my faith.”

Austin’s introduction to yoga came three years ago when he was a dental sales representative. This ex-football player for Joliet Central High School left his first class thinking, “OK, coach, put me in. I’m ready to play.” Austin said he felt rested and rejuvenated.

But Austin had to be certain yoga – with its association to Eastern philosophies – would not prick his Christian conscience. So he studied. Austin said he discovered yoga brought one closer to God. “I think yoga gets you to stop and listen to your own body, own heart and own mind,” Austin said. “That’s exactly what yoga means, to take or to bind, actually to bind them to the Lord.”

making money to praying for direction in his life. Austin eventually became certified at Northwest Christian Yoga Academy. The fact the academy was a Christian one was important to him.

“I wanted my teaching to be authentic,” said Austin, a member of Crossroads Christian Church in Joliet, “and at the same time I didn’t want to be doing something against my faith.”

Austin is pursuing additional training certification at Northwest Christian Yoga Academy. He hopes to teach yoga for the rest of his life. He feels such plans are as lofty as serving as a

Dear Dr. K: I have trouble falling asleep, and melatonin has not worked. I want to avoid medications, and I have read magnesium supplements can help. Should I try them?

Dear Reader: Magnesium is important for many biological functions, including nerve and muscle function. It might have a role as a preventive treatment for migraine headaches. But there is not strong scientific evidence for its use with insomnia.

The studies that have suggested a sleep benefit have been small (fewer than 50 participants) and short (eight weeks). Small benefits in sleep quality were observed in subjects who were elderly. One study was of nursing home residents. With such limited evidence, it is difficult to strongly support regular use of magnesium for insomnia.

Is there a reason to think you lack magnesium? Since most of the magnesium in the body is inside cells and bones, blood levels of the mineral do not tell the whole story. Magnesium deficiency is common in hospitalized individuals. That’s particularly true for patients in intensive care units.

But it is unusual in healthy people.

You might be at increased risk of low magnesium if you take certain medications. Some diuretic medicines, used to get rid of excess fluid and to lower blood pressure, increase magnesium loss in the urine.

Long-term use of proton-pump inhibitors for acid reflux can interfere with magnesium absorption. In most other people, dietary magnesium should be sufficient.

Your kidneys control how much magnesium is eliminated in your urine. When your blood levels of magnesium are low, your kidneys keep magnesium in the blood and out of the urine.

Dear Abby: DEAR ABBY We have a child who was adopted Jeanne through a closed Phillips adoption. We met the birth parents briefly at the hospital, but they wanted no further contact. Both birth parents had issues with drug abuse, and our daughter was born with drug issues, too.

A few years later, we were contacted via the adoption agency by the paternal birth grandparents. They requested some photos because the birth father was getting out of jail and they thought the photos would help keep him out of trouble. We sent a nice collection of photos and an update on our child.

The next year, the birth grandparents sent a letter saying they would like more contact, including visits. The birth father, who now is back in jail, never contacted us and, as far as we know, does not want any contact.

Our daughter is 6 and has expressed interest in her birth family. My husband wants no contact with the birth grandparents since neither of the birth parents consented to contact and it was a closed adoption. He also is concerned our other adopted children may be hurt and jealous since they can’t have contact with their birth parents for various reasons.

I am worried our daughter will be upset when she grows up that we never established a relationship with her birth family, but I really don’t want to be involved with a family with such complex drug and legal issues. We have a large extended family, and our daughter sees her grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins all the time. Should we start a relationship with her birth grandparents? – Uncertain Down

That is a good sentence for bridge players to remember. Especially when in a suit contract, after the dummy comes down, the declarer should pause and count up his potential losers. How many should South see in today’s deal? He is in four hearts, and West has led the club queen.

Well, let’s count them up. South has one in spades, one in hearts, one in diamonds and one in clubs -- one too many.

At this point, it is a good idea to count winners. (If an opponent complains that you are taking too long, tell him that he has just broken your train of thought and you will have to start all over again!) Here, declarer has one spade, four hearts, two diamonds and two clubs -- a total of nine. Hmm ... things are grim. What should South do?

North, counting three points for the singleton, was well worth his single heart raise.

The spade, heart and diamond losers are theoretically unavoidable.

Declarer must eliminate that club loser. After taking the first trick, he must lead a diamond, preferably a sneaky jack. If West is asleep and plays low, suddenly South can collect an overtrick. But let’s assume West wins with his ace and plays another club. Declarer takes the trick, discards dummy’s last club on the diamond king, and starts to draw trumps.
