By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield Library District Board is turning its attention to the April election to pose revised referendum questions to voters to build and operate a new library.

Voters in the March 15 primary turned down two referendums aimed at building a $39 million library to replace the increasingly cramped one now in use. The library would have gone from 27,000 square feet to 75,000 square feet, which nearly triples the size of the existing library.

Critics have said the library would raise taxes on residents, whereas supporters say a new downtown library is greatly needed.

Now library staff and the board are considering an addition to the current downtown facility or building anew. Graham Harwood from CCS International, a contracted firm, told the board Monday that they would get more bang for their buck if

they renovate and build an addition on a smaller scale.

“For $28 million, as we look at that, you get an additional 29,000 square feet, for 56,000 square feet total,” Harwood said.

“For the same amount of money, you can get a new building with significantly less … at [41,500 square feet.]”

Plainfield board member Patricia Miller questioned how far the library board could scale back before it hinders the ability to provide services. She said she didn’t want to lose supporters.

“It won’t be worthwhile to do the project if we aren’t able to make a sufficient change in how we operate and how we serve,” Miller said. “I mean, we have to have enough to make it worthwhile. It’s a huge undertaking.”

The goal of Monday night’s workshop session between board members and department heads was to lay out a list of values, purposes and building visions, which will be used to craft a message to voters about what a new library can offer.

Board and library staff will have to continue with the referendum push under new leadership.

Library Director Julie Milavec announced her resignation Monday night, saying she has accepted a new position at another library. She would not say where, noting she wants to allow the library time to notify its staff of the changes.

“This was not an easy decision and it’s been almost 16 years I’ve been here. And we’ve come so far. They said when I got here, we were serving under 19,000 and today it’s over 75,000,” she said. “Even though the building hasn’t changed, a whole lot of other things have changed around here.”

District 202 board, union reach agreement

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – A controversial proposal to outsource custodians at Plainfield School District 202 was avoided as the board and custodians’ union reached a new agreement.

The agreement between the board and the Plainfield Association Support Staff is one that Board President Michelle Smith said at Monday’s meeting will “result in significant savings for the district over the next three years” but that PASS President John Piechocinski stated in a news release is “bittersweet at best.”

Since district officials announced in early February that they were considering outsourcing custodial services to save money, the proposal was met with rallying and criticism from PASS members.

Under the agreement the board approved Monday – and that PASS voted in favor of Saturday – custodians will continue to receive their pay, workers’ compensation coverage, health insurance and retirement benefits through District 202,

according to a news release.

District officials emphasized in a news release that the agreement could save $1.8 million in costs a year.

However, custodial positions will be restructured and their numbers will be lowered and certain positions will make less while the pay for some others will remain the same.

“Yes, we have preserved the jobs of our dedicated school custodial staff,” Piechocinski said in statement. “But we did so by reducing salaries and sick leave, and by cutting the number of employees who are currently available to serve the students and schools.”

He also stated the reductions under the agreement will make “attracting and retaining great employees a more difficult challenge in the future.”

District officials said the agreement will be incorporated into the new PASS contract being negotiated.

Smith said in a statement – after the board voted on the agreement Monday – that the board was compelled by its fiduciary duty to taxpayers to “fully explore the

difference between our existing internal custodian staffing model and the outsourcing option.”

She said the board has been prepared to bargain all relevant aspects of potential outsourcing with PASS and the board bargaining team developed an initial plan that was competitive with the bids received to avoid outsourcing. The agreement will result in significant savings for District 202 over the next three years and keep custodians employed by the district, she said.

“As all issues between the board and PASS related to outsourcing are now resolved, the board will take action to terminate the pending bid process and will recall the honorably dismissed custodians,” Smith said.

The district received custodial services bids from ABM, Aramark and GCA Services Group.

At the April 25 meeting, PASS representatives gave the board an analysis of the bids and raised the possibility of litigation – concerning the legality of the current bidding process – if district officials accepted one of the bids.

HIV prevention, mental health programs on the chopping block

JOLIET – Grappling with severe depression, Robert Talkie said he first walked into the Will County Health Department 15 years ago in need of mental health services.

On Monday, he spoke out against the May 27 suspension of those state-funded programs during a news conference in Joliet that included elected officials, mental health advocates and county employees.

Talkie urged Illinois lawmakers to pass a budget, and for Will County officials to come up with a temporary solution to possibly prevent some of the slated 53 layoffs. More than 52,000 clients are estimated to be affected by program suspensions.

Talkie is among the nearly 1,700 people who annually receive adult psychiatric services or outpatient mental health services through the local agency.

“If not for the services I received there, I would not, could not, be here talking with you,” Talkie said. “I pray that this good work continues.”

Illinois owes the Will County Health Department just over $2.1 million for work performed under contracts dating back to July 2015. To make up the shortfall, the department’s Board of Health voted to suspend nine programs, including its adult psychiatric services.

Will County Board members Bob Howard, D-Beecher, and Lauren Staley-Ferry, D-Joliet, said county officials are eyeing possible solutions – such as a temporary loan to the health department through the county’s fiscal year, which ends Nov. 30.

But not all programs can be funded.

Susan Olenek, executive director of the health department, is scheduled to provide recommendations at 10 a.m.

Thursday at the County Board’s Executive Committee meeting.

On the chopping block are programs such as family case management; vision and hearing testing for schoolchildren; HIV counseling, prevention and testing; and tobacco control and education.

Which programs to save and which to put to the wayside has yet to be determined. Many factors – including number of clients served and program costs – will be considered, county officials have said.

medicines, capitated care, juvenile justice, child and adolescent services and adult psychiatric services – also may be cut. Those six programs cost

nearly $1.2 million yearly to run, according to health department documents.

At a $26,000 annual cost, the health

department also provided nearly 32,000 vision and hearing tests to 164 area schools last year.

The lack of funding for mental health services in the community is only shifting costs elsewhere – including to the Will County Jail and hospital emergency rooms, said Teena Mackey, president for NAMI Will-Grundy, a mental health advocacy group.

By ANNA SCHIER aschier@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A chapter of Will County history is in pieces after a mural commemorating the Will County Poor Farm was vandalized recently.

“It was a one-of-a-kind piece,” said Gina Wysocki, a local historian and the author of “Digging Up The Dirt: The History and Mysteries of the Will County Poor Farm and Potter’s Fields.”

Located near Mission Boulevard and McDonough Street in Joliet, the site of the former poor farm and potter’s fields is owned by the state and leased by the Joliet Park District, but maintained by Wysocki and a group of volunteers.

The mosaic-style mural was created by the Friends of Community Public Art in Joliet and installed in July 2012 at the site to honor its history.

From 1850 to 1955, the poor farm, a county institution, served as a last home for people with developmental disabilities and veterans, Wysocki said. Many poor farm residents were buried in the potter’s fields.

The mosaic depicted the history of the farm, including a child pumping water from a well, a Civil War soldier and a rendering of the last structure from the poor farm still standing – the county’s former juvenile detention center.

the mural was attacked with blunt force and its depiction of the farm was destroyed.

Wysocki reported the incident to the Joliet Police Department.

“They knocked out all the tile,” Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said.

And while vandalism is no new occurrence at the potter’s fields, Wysocki said, the mosaic has never before been damaged. She said it is estimated to cost about $10,000 to fix and is not insured.

“This would be a felony criminal damage to property,” Gregory said, but he added that because there are no witnesses to or suspects in the mosaic’s destruction, there is no way to investigate.

Wysocki intends to donor-fund the repairs and is hoping to involve the Will County Historical Society, the park district and area state legislators in her efforts.

She also urges anyone who knows anything about the vandalism to contact the police at 815-726-2491.

“The mosaic didn’t just fall apart,” she said.

JOLIET – The city on Monday publicly released a letter from the law firm of Figliulo & Silverman that was kept under wraps until the firm withdrew from the Evergreen Terrace case.

The letter suggests communication from the City Council, which never saw the letter until the firm was out of the case, could affect its plan to withdraw.

The April 1 letter was shared with the council for the first time Friday afternoon after a judge had granted the motion to withdraw.

The city is in the process of hiring an unnamed local law firm to replace Figliulo & Silverman.

The letter from the Chicago firm, which represented Joliet for 11 years as the city successfully condemned the Evergreen Terrace housing complex, was sent to City Manager Jim Hock and City Attorney Marty Shanahan.

The letter expresses the firm’s interest in staying on the case but says “we believe that our ethical obligations require us to withdraw” amid allegations and threats of litigation made at a March 17 news conference.

“Given the accusations made against us by Mayor O’Dekirk and the Inspector General, accusations that we consider both unfounded and defamatory, we believe there is a conflict between the City and our firm,” the letter states.

Mayor Bob O’Dekirk and Inspector General Chris Regis at that news conference said the city would consider civil litigation and a criminal investigation because they believed hourly rate increases during the course of the lawsuit should have been approved by the City Council.

Those rate increases amounted to $657,000 of the total $5.5 million paid to Figliulo & Silverman.

O’Dekirk referred to the matter again at a City Council meeting last week when he commended Regis for uncovering “$660,000 in money either improperly or illegally paid to a Chicago law firm.”

The mayor at that meeting also said the city should not try to stop Figliulo & Silverman’s withdrawal from the case. No council members suggested that the city intervene, and Joliet did

not send anyone to the hearing on the motion.

However, some council members had said previously that the city would be best served keeping Figliulo & Silverman on the case because of its knowledge and experience in the matter. According to the letter, Hock and Shanahan on March 18 had “urged us to continue serving as counsel for Joliet.”

Technically, the law firm withdrew from a pending civil-rights case filed

by Evergreen Terrace owners, said Carl Gigante, an attorney with the firm. The case was linked to the condemnation case, which is still pending a decision on ownership’s appeal.

Gigante wrote the letter, which was given to Joliet police for an investigation into issues discussed in the inspector general’s report.

“I would have thought it would have been shared with council members,” Gigante said. “We were looking for some indication of how the council felt as a whole.”

The letter states that the firm’s reputation had been damaged by “rash allegations” from the news conference.

“Barring further communications from the City Council that would somehow cast new light on, and disavow, the Mayor’s statements and comments from his Inspector General, we believe that we should withdraw from representing the City of Joliet,” the letter states.

Council members said they received the letter in a weekly report from Hock.

Hock was out of town Monday and unavailable for comment.

“I don’t know why it was released Friday afternoon,” said Councilman Michael Turk, who had previously asked to see the letter but was told he could not because of the police investigation.

Shanahan said the letter was likely released Friday because “the law firm is officially withdrawn from the case” but deferred to Hock as to why it was released then.

Neighbors sue late farmer’s estate over illegal dumping

PLAINFIELD – Neighbors of the Plainfield farmer who died while facing criminal charges for a decades-long illegal dumping operation in the DuPage River are now suing his estate.

In a lawsuit filed Thursday in Will County, Christopher Jenkins and Kimmy Elitzer claim that illegal dumping

by Herman Fritz has changed “the natural flow” of the DuPage River.

The lawsuit is the latest development in the Plainfield farmer’s illegal dumping controversy.

The Plainfield farmer was arrested in May 2015 on criminal charges of dumping and allowing the dumping of

construction and other wastes on the bank of the DuPage River that bordered his farm to the south. Months after his arrest, Fritz died in a July 10, 2015, crash in Minooka.

Also listed as defendants in Elitzer and Jenkins’ lawsuit are Universal Concrete Systems, Christensen Excavating and Trucking, Ram Construction and Landscaping, and R&R Septic and Sewer Service.

The lawsuit claims Fritz charged a fee to these companies, and others, and in exchange, Fritz would dump the companies’ garbage on his property, in the river itself and near the plaintiffs’ property, which they bought in 2011.

Fritz would use his tractor to cover the contaminants, and as a direct result,

the riverbank extended away from his land and closer to Elitzer and Jenkins’ property, the lawsuit claims. Fritz also built berms and a gravel road, forcing water to flood the plaintiffs’ property.

“The physical invasion of water … has washed out and caused the river bank of the Lower DuPage River on plaintiffs’ lot to fail and become unstable,” the lawsuit states.

One of the plaintiffs, Jenkins, is the same person who helped break the story of Fritz’s dumping in 2014 by contacting environmental agencies and taking photos and video of several instances when the dumping occurred. That documentation includes times when garbage was pushed into the river.

Before his arrest, the Will County

State’s Attorney’s Office filed an emergency motion ordering Fritz to stop dumping. Cleanup of the property began in March.

Fritz’s death put an end to the criminal charges, but a civil complaint moved forward against his estate. As of March, the estate has been cooperative, according to the State’s Attorney’s Office.

The estate filed a remediation plan with the county, which was previously reviewed and approved by the Will County Land Use Office and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.

Calls placed to phone numbers listed online for a Kristi Hartz in Will County – whose name is listed in the lawsuit as executor of Fritz’s estate – were not immediately returned Monday.

New Joliet dog regulations outline procedures for attacks

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – New regulations spell out procedures for Joliet residents dealing with dog attacks.

The city ordinance, along with an agreement with Joliet Township Animal Control, were approved last week by the City Council after months of meetings with city residents who complained about lax rules when dealing with dangerous animals.

“What has been identified in this whole process is that there has been a communications gap,” said City Attorney Marty Shanahan, who wrote the new ordinance and negotiated the agreement with Animal Control.

Hoping to fill in the gap, the agreement with Animal Control even spells out response times expected for a variety of animal situations that range from vicious dogs to bats in the house.

Joliet Township Animal Control is the agency that ultimately is called to pick up a stray or dangerous dog.

Sarah Gimbel, director of Animal Control, said the new regulations and agreement with the city should clarify how animal situations are handled.

“We’re building up the communication with the city and have references to ordinances that we can follow or enforce,” Gimbel said.

Residents complained that it was too difficult to determine who was supposed to do what between Animal Control, the police and City Hall.

whether the attacking dog should be deemed dangerous or vicious.

• If the dog is running loose, Animal Control can seize it and retain it if the dog is determined to pose a danger to the public.

• If the dog is kept by its owner, police and Animal Control will investigate to determine whether the dog needs to be impounded.

• Once a report is completed, the city manager or a designated official will determine whether there needs to be a hearing to determine whether

a dog is dangerous or vicious.

Vicious dogs are dogs that have killed or seriously injured a person or companion animal. The ordinance provides that vicious dogs be euthanized.

The ordinance has a number of new provisions, including reimbursement for victims, liability insurance for owners of dangerous dogs and signs to be displayed prominently at homes where dogs determined to be dangerous are kept.

One thing the ordinance does not do is target specific breeds, Councilwoman Jan Quillman noted.

At least two incidents that have occurred since the city began rewriting its dog control law involved pit bulls. But the ordinance does not mention breeds.

First case of wildlife rabies this year confirmed SHAW MEDIA JOLIET – A live bat trapped in a garage in Braidwood became the first confirmed case of wildlife rabies this year in Will County.

A resident at the 800 block of north School Street pinned the bat to the garage floor, covered it with a plastic container and contacted Will County Animal Control, whose staff then took the bat to the Illinois Department of Public Health for laboratory analysis, according to a news release.

A rabies confirmation was received May 5.

No human exposures are suspected, but a dog living on the property received a rabies booster shot and is subject to observation.

Will County health officials said in a news release that the county set a wildlife rabies record with 20 laboratory-confirmed rabies cases last year.

In 2014, that number was 13.

Rabies is a dangerous viral disease that can be transmitted to humans through the bite or scratch of a warm-blooded animal, county health officials said.

The disease is virtually always fatal if treatment is significantly delayed.

It’s impossible to predict the potential for rabies activity during any given year, but warmer weather, coupled with increases of outdoor activity, means more rabies cases are likely, Will County Animal Control Administrator Lee Schild said.

“The activity we saw during 2015 was certainly unprecedented,” Schild said in a news release. “… We strongly urge area pet owners to make sure their dogs and cats are current on their rabies vaccinations. The shots are our main line of defense against possible rabies transmissions to humans.”

At least one Braidwood bat tested positive for rabies during the last three years and rabies activity has also been documented in Wilmington, Peotone, Crete and Manhattan, health officials said.

Bats are nocturnal animals that are not usually seen at ground level, Schild said in the news release. If they are seen on the ground, that usually indicates they are diseased.

“It’s vital to report any contact with wildlife, especially bats, to the most appropriate animal control authority as soon as possible. Children need to be warned about the dangers associated with wildlife contact,” Schild said in the news release.

Illinois has recorded at least 814 cases of wildlife rabies since 2000, and 805 have involved bats.

Will County was one of 21 counties to report bat rabies last year and along with Cook and DuPage, it accounted for more than 61 percent of last year’s state totals.

Intersection reconstruction to start at U.S. 6 and Parker Road SHAW MEDIA NEW LENOX – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that temporary lane closures will take place starting May 12, weather permitting, at the intersection of Route 6 and Parker Road in New Lenox for inter-

section reconstruction.

Temporary lane closures and lane width reductions will take place in both directions of Route 6 and Parker Road in order for the work to be done, according to a news release from IDOT. The closure locations will change according to project staging.

Jordan A. Arthur, 27, will face jurors July 18, Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Chris Koch and Assistant Public Defender Greg DeBord agreed Jordan Monday. Arthur is A. Arthur charged with murder in the June 1, 2011, death of Courtney L. Jordan.

About 1:35 a.m. Courtney Jordan, 34, called 911 to say he’d been involved in an argument and was being threatened when shots rang out, police said at the time. Officers arrived to find Courtney Jordan lying facedown with multiple bullet wounds in a parking

lot in the zero block of North Hickory Street – a block from his apartment.

Detectives learned Courtney Jordan, who had a substantial history of drug charges, was involved with a woman who was dating Arthur at the same time, police said. Arthur was questioned and charged two days later.

Koch told Judge Sarah Jones at a pretrial hearing last year Arthur can be heard on the 911 recording, while DeBord said audio experts would disagree. Jones agreed the voice-analysis technique the defense wanted to use in Arthur’s trial does not have enough scientific acceptance.

Some states have case law on voice identification, but Illinois does not.

At the time of his death, Courtney Jordan was on parole from a 10-year-sentence for delivery of drugs in 2005, despite another arrest for drug possession charges two months before he was killed.

JOLIET – Police say a teen driver ran a stop sign and caused a two-car crash that killed a Joliet woman.

The collision happened at 8:15 p.m.

Sunday at Fifth Avenue and Gardner Street in Joliet when a southbound 1999 Honda Accord driven by a 17-year-old boy T-boned an eastbound 2003 Ford Explorer, Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory said.

“There was a witness to the crash who said the Accord had been traveling at a high rate of speed and did not stop at the sign,” Gregory said. “The Accord struck the Explorer, then a tree and spun around.”

The impact pushed the Explorer into the wall of a residence in the 100 block of Fifth Avenue.

“A concrete block was pushed in 1 inch,” Gregory said.

The Accord was carrying two pas-

sengers – a 16-year-old girl and a 12-yearold girl. None of the occupants of the Accord were injured, Gregory said.

According to police reports, a 59-year-old woman was driving the Explorer and an 83-year-old woman was in the front passenger seat. Patricia A. Wells, 63, and a 7-year-old girl were in the backseat.

Joliet firefighters found Wells unconscious and she was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, where she was pronounced dead at 9:56 p.m., Gregory said.

Will County Coroner Patrick K. O’Neil said an autopsy performed Monday afternoon showed Wells died from injuries she suffered in the crash.

The driver of the Explorer and the 83-year-old passenger were taken to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox. The driver was hospitalized with shoulder pain and the passenger was examined.

The 17-year-old driver was ticketed for disobeying a stop sign and speeding.

LOCAL BRIEFS New Lenox firefighters respond to overnight shed fire

NEW LENOX – Firefighters responded early Saturday to a shed fire in New Lenox.

The incident occurred at 12:35 a.m. in the 100 block of Warren Avenue, New Lenox Fire Protection District Deputy Chief Adam Riegel said.

The blaze was under control within 15 minutes, Riegel said. The shed, which is attached to a garage, was significantly damaged, Riegel said. The garage and house on the property saw minor damage.

No one was injured, Riegel said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Fire agencies from East Joliet, Homer Township, Mokena and Frankfort assisted the district in its response.

New Lenox man dies after motorcycle crash in Chicago

CHICAGO – A New Lenox man died last week after he was involved in a motorcycle crash in Chicago.

John Baran, 46, of the 500 block of Beech Lane in New Lenox, was driving a motorcycle that crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with an SUV at 9:32 p.m. Thursday in the 6300 block of South Harlem Avenue on Chicago’s southwest side, according to reports from the Chicago Police Department and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

ROCKDALE – Two vehicles collided Monday afternoon at Route 6 and Brandon Road.

About 12:30 p.m. a minivan was turning from westbound Route 6 onto southbound Brandon Road when it “took the turn too sharp,� and slid into a northbound Dodge Charger, Police Chief Robert Dykstra said. The impact then pushed the vehicles into the guardrail at the corner.

Neither vehicle was carrying passengers. Both drivers were taken to the hospital with “minor injuries,� Dykstra said.

JOLIET – Cars and a Fairmont Avenue apartment were damaged by gunfire Sunday night when masked assailants shot at people on the street.

No one was injured. Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory said officers on patrol were able to hear the shots at 9:43 p.m. in the area of Fairmont and Englewood avenues in Joliet. A 19-year-old woman, an 18-year-old man and a 24-year-old man were near a white Chevrolet Lumina when three black men wearing black clothing and covering their faces with black bandanas approached, Gregory said.

At least one of the men was armed and fired into the woman’s Lumina, while the 18-year-old man was sitting in the backseat. Bullets also damaged an upstairs window in the 1500 block of Fairmont Avenue and the passenger door of a gold Honda Accord parked in front of the residence, Gregory said.

Gregory said police have recently increased patrols in the Fairmont area in response to other shooting incidents.

The health department is the only agency in Will County that conducts HIV surveillance with an annual caseload of 200, according to an American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 1028 news release. In 2015, Will County had 30 new HIV diagnoses – 10 of which had already progressed to AIDS. The agency’s tobacco control and prevention program also is at risk, said David Delrose, president of AFSCME Local 1028. Without the program, there will be no enforcement of the Smoke Free Illinois law in Will County, he said.

State Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, urged the Illinois House to pass his appropriations bill – Senate Bill 2047 – which provides $441 million for human service programs not covered under consent decrees. Some of that would fund agency programs, he said.

Former East German first lady Margot Honecker dies in Chile

By EVA VERGARA and GEIR MOULSON The Associated Press SANTIAGO, Chile – Former East German first lady Margot Honecker, who defended the now-vanished Communist country to the end, died Friday in Chile at age 89, a family friend confirmed.

Honecker had lived since 1992 in Chile, three years after the toppling of the Berlin Wall signaled the impending collapse of the socialist government. Margot Her husband, Erich Honecker Honecker, died in 1994 after joining her in Chile.

A family friend and member of Chile’s Communist Party confirmed the death.

Honecker, who remained unrepentant about the country’s record of repression, had been education minister and dictated what children in rigidly orthodox East Germany learned for 26 years.

She said youngsters must defend socialism “if necessary with a weapon in the hand,” and one of her pet projects was field trips by kindergarten children to military bases.

city of Halle on April 17, 1927, Honecker grew up in a poor family. She trained as a saleswoman before taking a job as a telephone operator.

She became a member of the Communist Party in 1945, and then rose through the ranks of the communist youth organization, the Free German Youth.

In 1950, at age 22, she became the youngest lawmaker in the fledgling East German parliament. She married Erich Honecker in 1953.

She started work at the Education Ministry in 1955 and rose to become minister in 1963 under then-leader Walter Ulbricht. Erich Honecker, who supervised the 1961 construction of the Berlin Wall, succeeded Ulbricht in 1971.

Margot Honecker resigned shortly before the Wall fell in November 1989, with the communist system in crisis and her husband already ousted as East German leader.

Two months after Germany reunified in October 1990, Berlin authorities charged Erich Honecker with manslaughter for ordering shootings along the heavily fortified east-west border.

The couple took refuge in a Soviet military hospital outside Berlin, and on March 13, 1991, they were spirited

to Moscow – an embarrassment to the German government.

In a joint television interview two months later, Margot Honecker complained of a “witch hunt” against the couple and said their names had been “dragged through the mud.”

The Soviet Union’s collapse sent the couple fleeing again, to the Chilean Embassy in Moscow. The couple had friends in the South American country who had found refuge in East Germany during Chile’s right-wing dictatorship.

Erich Honecker left the embassy in July 1992 and returned to Berlin for trial. Margot Honecker traveled to Chile, where their daughter, Sonja, lived. In early 1993 a court halted the proceedings against Erich Honecker because of his spreading liver cancer.

Some Germans demanded that charges be filed against Margot Honecker for allegedly ordering forced adoptions of children from families considered enemies of the state in her time as education minister. But no such charges were filed.

William Schallert, actor and activist, has died at 93

By FRAZIER MOORE The Associated Press William Schallert, a veteran TV performer and Hollywood union leader who played Patty Duke’s father – and uncle – on television and led a long, contentious strike for actors, has died.

Schallert died Sunday at his home in Pacific Palisades, California, said his son, Edwin. He was 93.

Though usually seen in secondary roles, Schallert’s lean, friendly face was familiar to baby boomers for roles in two classic sitcoms – as a teacher to Dwayne Hickman and his pals in “The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis” and as the dad in “The Patty Duke Show.”

In 1979, Schallert was elected president of the 46,000-member Screen Actors Guild, an honor held at one time or another by James Cagney, George Murphy, Ronald Reagan, Charlton Heston and other screen notables. Most of them had little to do but conduct meetings and issue statements. With Schallert it was different.

In 1980 he led the union as it staged a 13-week strike over such issues as actors’ pay for films made for the thennew cable television industry.

He told the Los Angeles Times his message to actors was that “we have to respect ourselves as artists” and recalled the pre-union days when actors were sometimes expected to work until midnight and be back at work six hours later.

Schallert was defeated in his bid for a second two-year term as SAG president in 1981 by “Lou Grant” star Ed Asner, who had strongly criticized the agreement the union had reached to end the strike. Schallert said in 2008 that his greatest accomplishment as SAG president was the formation of a committee for performers with disabilities.

In all, Schallert appeared in hundreds of movies, television series and specials, playing characters and walkons. He was a messenger in “Singin’ in the Rain,” a Union soldier in “The Red Badge of Courage” and an admiral in “Get Smart.”

Bruce Rauner and other Republicans said Monday that bipartisan groups of Illinois lawmakers are making progress on changes Rauner has said are essential to any agreement on a long-overdue state budget. But a compromise to end a nearly yearlong impasse between the GOP and majority Democrats remains elusive as the Legislature approaches a critical end-of-the-month deadline.

The governor and House GOP leader Jim Durkin said rank-and-file legislators, meeting behind closed doors, are finding common ground on how to make Illinois’ workers’ compensation insurance program less expensive for businesses – a key Republican priority.

They said there’s also been movement on property tax relief and changing the way state and local governments buy items, which Rauner has said could save millions annually. Durkin, of Western Springs, said there could be a report “very soon” on possible workers’ compensation legislation.

Bill seeks sexual assault investigation oversight

ROBBINS – A bill that’s moving through the Illinois Legislature is aimed at ensuring local police departments properly handle rape investigations.

Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart worked on the legislation with Democratic state Sen. Bill Cunningham of Chicago after dozens of rape kits were found in the Chicago suburb of Robbins in 2013 that hadn’t been sent to the state police crime lab for DNA testing.

The bill seeks to institute checks and balances on the handling of rape investigations by local police departments in an effort to prevent similar miscarriages of justice from occurring in the future, the Daily Southtown reported.

Tribune moves to fend off Gannett takeover

NEW YORK – Fending off an unsolicited takeover by the owner of USA Today, Chicago’s Tribune Publishing has adopted a shareholder rights plan, better known as “poison pill.”

Gannett offered to buy Tribune Publishing last month for more than $388 million. Tribune rejected the offer last week, saying the price was too low. The company owns the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune and a number of other newspapers.

The plan announced Monday allows existing shareholders to buy preferred stock if a person or group acquires at least 20

Manar is pushing a school funding formula overhaul he said could help lead toward a budget solution and intends to have it called for a vote this week.

Chicago officer fatally shoots robbery suspect

CHICAGO – A Chicago police officer has shot and killed an armed suspect, the second fatal police shooting in the city in four days.

Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said officers responding to a bank robbery Monday morning on the city’s Southwest Side were chasing the male suspect when he turned toward them with a weapon and one officer shot the suspect. The suspect, whose name hasn’t been released, was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Johnson said a weapon was recovered.

Nobody else was injured.

Johnson said the suspect was believed to have robbed another bank over the weekend.

Trial starts in case where police shot man 11 times

CHICAGO – Jury selection has started in a federal lawsuit brought by a man who was shot by 11 times by Chicago police officers.

Bassil Abdelal said officers opened fire in 2012 after he picked up a gun for protection moments after he was the victim of an armed robbery at his beauty supply business. The trial started Monday in federal court. Abdelal alleged the officers were unjustified. But the three officers contend that they acted properly.

They say they fired after Abdelal pointed a gun at them. The trial has been delayed several times. That’s because the city has argued that the furor over the release of a video showing a white officer shooting black teenager Laquan McDonald to death would make it impossible to seat an unbiased jury.

Theater shooting victims can’t cite security memo

By SADIE GURMAN The Associated Press CENTENNIAL, Colo. – Victims of a deadly shooting at a Colorado movie theater can’t show jurors a federal security memo, dated months before the attack, warning theaters that they could be targeted by international terrorists, a judge ruled Monday.

That dealt a blow to the case against Cinemark, which victims argue should be held accountable for not doing more to prevent James Holmes’ 2012 rampage.

The victims argued Cinemark never shared the U.S. Department of Homeland Security memo with theater managers, failing to put them on notice to bolster security.

Opening statements are expected Tuesday in the civil trial, where jurors will be asked to determine whether, in an age of mass shootings, the theater should have foreseen the possibility of violence. Six jurors and two alternates were selected Monday.

In the civil case in state court, 28 victims and their families say Cinemark should have had armed guards at the packed opening of the Batman film “The Dark Knight Rises” and alarms that would have sounded when James Holmes slipped into the darkened auditorium through an emergency

exit and opened fire, killing 12.

The families, some of whom filled the first rows of the courtroom, say the theater company knew the midnight blockbuster would attract at least 1,000 people and should have had guards patrolling the parking lot, where they might have seen Holmes suiting up in head-to-toe body armor in his car.

The lawsuit says theater employees failed to check doors, lacked closed-circuit television cameras that would have allowed them to spot trouble and did not intervene as victims lay wounded and dying in the aisles.

Theaters across the country had extra security for the July 20, 2012, premiere, and the Century 16 theater in Aurora typically had guards Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, said New York attorney Marc Bern, who is representing 27 of the families. The premiere fell on a Thursday.

“We believe if these precautions had been in place, the shooting would have been deterred and prevented,” he said.

Cinemark says it could not have foreseen or prevented the attack. If anyone is to blame, it’s Holmes’ University of Colorado psychiatrist, to whom he confessed his homicidal thoughts, the company argues.

Anxiety over Trump cuts into House Republicans’ support

By ERICA WERNER The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Anxiety over Donald Trump spread among congressional Republicans Monday, pushing several to follow House Speaker Paul Ryan’s lead and withhold their support from the divisive billionaire. Ryan himself declared there’s no point in trying to “fake” party unity.

“If we go forward pretending that we’re unified, then we are going to be at half-strength this fall,” Ryan told The Journal Times in Racine, Wisconsin, defending his stunning decision last week to refuse to endorse his party’s presumptive presidential nominee.

Still, in interviews with home-state reporters Monday, Ryan denounced the idea of any Republican launching a third-party or independent candidacy to challenge Trump, telling the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel it “would be a disaster for our party.”

And Ryan said he’d step aside from the House speaker’s traditional role as chairman of the Republican National Convention if Trump wants him to, a scenario that Trump left open over the weekend, underscoring the depths of strife now afflicting a GOP divided against itself.

“He’s the nominee. I’ll do whatever he wants in respect to the convention,” Ryan said, striking a conciliatory note.

Trump himself shrugged off the need for unity heading into the November general election and a likely match-up against Democrat

Hillary Clinton, even though that would be the goal in any normal election year after a candidate effectively clinches the nomination, as Trump did last week.

“I think this is a time for unity. And if there’s not going to be unity, I think that’s OK, too,” Trump said on Fox Business Network. “I mean, I’ll go out and I think I’ll do very well. I think I’m going to win the race either way.”

The comments from Ryan and Trump came as both men prepared for a face-to-face meeting Thursday, which Republican leaders hope will begin to mend the fabric of their party. Trump will also meet Thursday with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and other Senate GOP leaders.

Still, ahead of the meeting, Ryan’s negative stance appeared to be providing cover for some vulnerable Republicans who are eager to distance themselves from Trump and his controversial comments about women, Latinos, prisoners of war and others.

Pennsylvania Sen. Pat Toomey, one of the most endangered Senate Republicans, wrote an opinion piece in the Philadelphia Inquirer drawing back from his long-stated intent to back the GOP nominee.

“His vulgarity, particularly toward women, is appalling. His lack of appreciation for constitutional limits on executive powers is deeply concerning. ... In short, I find his candidacy highly problematic,” Toomey wrote of Trump.

“There could come a point at which the differences are so great as to be irreconcilable.”

By EMERY P. DALESIO and GARY D. ROBERTSON The Associated Press RALEIGH, N.C. – A potentially epic clash over transgender rights took shape Monday when the U.S. Justice Department sued North Carolina over the state’s bathroom law after the governor refused to back down.

In unusually forceful language, U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch said North Carolina’s law requiring transgender people to use public restrooms and showers corresponding to the gender on their birth certificate amounts to “state-sponsored discrimination” and is aimed at “a problem that doesn’t exist.”

“What this law does is inflict further indignity on a population that has already suffered far more than its fair share,” she said, speaking directly to residents of her native state. “This law provides no benefit to society, and all it does is harm innocent Americans.”

Billions of dollars in federal aid for North Carolina – and a potentially landmark decision regarding the reach of the nation’s civil-rights laws – are at stake in the dispute, which in recent weeks has triggered boycotts and cancellations aimed at pressuring the state into repealing the measure.

Last week, the U.S. Justice Department said the law amounts to illegal sex discrimination and gave Gov. Pat McCrory until Monday to say he would refuse to enforce it.

When the deadline arrived, a defiant McCrory instead sued the federal government, arguing that the state law is a “commonsense privacy

policy” and that the Justice Department’s position is “baseless and blatant overreach.”

McCrory, a Republican who is up for re-election in November, accused the Obama administration of unilaterally rewriting federal civil-rights law to protect transgender people’s access to bathrooms, locker rooms and showers across the country.

“This is not a North Carolina issue. It is now a national issue,” he said.

Later in the day, the Justice Department struck back by suing the state, seeking a court order declaring the law discriminatory and unenforceable.

A judge could begin hearing arguments in the competing cases within weeks, during which North Carolina probably will try to stop the government from temporarily blocking the law or stripping away federal funding, said Rina Lindevaldsen, a Liberty University professor specializing in family and constitutional law.

With appeals courts around the country diverging on whether transgender people are protected under federal civil-rights laws, “this seems like the kind of thing that’s on track for the Supreme Court,” she said.

Defenders of the law have argued that it is needed to protect people from being molested in bathrooms.

North Carolina’s top legislative leaders, both Republicans, repeated that fear in their own lawsuit filed Monday in defense of the law.

Allowing “anyone to use any public bathroom, locker room or shower based solely on that person’s self-declared gender ‘identity’” would “create an opportunity for sexual predators of any sexual orientation

to abuse the policy to facilitate their predation,” they warned.

Lynch, however, said supporters of the law invented a problem “as a pretext for discrimination and harassment.”

Stars such as Bruce Springsteen and Pearl Jam have canceled shows in North Carolina over the law. PayPal abandoned a planned 400-employee operation center in Charlotte, and Deutsche Bank froze expansion plans near Raleigh.

Nearly 200 corporate leaders from across the country, including Charlotte-based Bank of America, have urged the measure’s repeal, arguing it is bad for business because it makes recruiting talented employees more difficult.

The law, which took effect in March, was passed in reaction to a Charlotte ordinance allowing transgender people to use the bathroom that corresponds to their gender identity.

The new law also excludes lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people from state anti-discrimination protection and bars local governments from adopting their own anti-bias measures. But the Justice Department has focused largely on the bathroom provisions.

Nearly half of North Carolina registered voters last month said cities should be prohibited from passing ordinances such as Charlotte’s, according to a poll by Elon University. Nearly four out of 10 said cities should have that leeway.

A CNN/ORC Poll released Monday found 57 percent of Americans oppose laws that require transgender people to use facilities corresponding with their sex at birth.

WASHINGTON – The White House worked Monday to contain the damage caused by one of President Barack Obama’s closest aides, who, in a seemingly candid, behind-the-curtain magazine story, ripped the Washington press corps, boasted of creating an “echo chamber” of supporters to sell the Iran nuclear deal and appeared to dismiss longtime foreign policy hands, including Hillary Clinton, as the Blob.

Deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes’ comments to The New York Times Magazine have sparked a mix of bewilderment and outrage in Washington’s political and policy circles. While some marveled at a savvy White House aide’s apparent eagerness to discuss what some consider the ugly sausage making of modern governing, others noted that he had kicked up a hornet’s nest of a debate over whether the White House oversold the legacy-burnishing deal to curb Iran’s nuclear program.

The article revived criticism of the agreement. In a statement issued Monday, Sen. John McCain, a Ben Rhodes longtime critic of the Iran pact, said the piece “provided a troubling glimpse of the White House spin machine that has put sustaining ‘the narrative’ above advancing the national interest.”

The piece portrays Rhodes, Obama’s top foreign policy speechwriter and arguably one of his most influential aides, as singularly in tune with his boss’s thinking and narrowly focused on crafting a messaging machine to support it. It quotes Rhodes lamenting the ignorance of Washington reporters. (“They literally know nothing.”) And it describes Rhodes, a former aspiring novelist, as focused on crafting a storyline and dismissing facts that don’t fit.

Rhodes appears to try to keep secret news that Iran had seized 10 U.S. Navy sailors until after the president’s State of the Union speech. The article quotes Rhodes and his aides describing how they used social media, journalists and friendly interest groups to disseminate White House-generated talking points about the Iran deal.

“We created an echo chamber,” Rhodes said. “They were saying things that validated what we had given them to say.”

Official: Fort McMurray saved from worst of wildfire Electrical crews work Monday amid burned-out buildings in a wildfire-ravaged neighborhood of Fort McMurray.

By RACHEL LA CORTE and ROB GILLIES The Associated Press FORT McMURRAY, Alberta – At least two neighborhoods in this oil sands city were scenes of utter devastation, with incinerated homes leveled to the ground from a wildfire that Fort McMurray’s fire chief called a “beast ... a fire like I’ve never seen in my life.”

But the wider picture was more optimistic, as Fire Chief Darby Allen said 85 percent of Canada’s main oil sands city remains intact, including the downtown district. Alberta’s premier declared the city had been saved, adding that officials hope to provide a schedule within two weeks for thousands of evacuated residents to begin returning to their homes.

Alberta Premier Rachel Notley said about 2,400 homes and buildings were destroyed in the city, but firefighters managed to save 25,000 others, including the hospital, municipal buildings and every functioning school.

“This city was surrounded by an ocean of fire only a few days ago, but Fort McMurray and the surrounding communities have been saved and they will be rebuilt,” Notley said.

rain had stabilized the massive wildfire to a point where officials could begin planning to get thousands of evacuated residents back.

The break in the weather left officials optimistic they’ve reached a turning point on getting a handle on the massive wildfire. The temperature dipped to 45 degrees Fahrenheit on Monday following a week where the region had unseasonably high temperatures.

Notley flew in Monday morning to meet with local officials and took a ground tour of the town before holding

a news conference at the emergency center.

“I was very much struck by the devastation of the fire. It was really quite overwhelming in some spots,” Notley said. “But I will also say that I was struck by the proximity of that devastation to neighborhoods that were untouched.”

More than 40 journalists were allowed into Fort McMurray on a bus escorted by police. The forest surrounding the road into town was still smoldering and there were abandoned cars. Only the sign remained at a Super

8 Motel and Denny’s restaurant on the edge of town.

The Beacon Hill neighborhood was a scene of utter devastation with homes burned down to their foundation.

Allen said that at one point, the fire jumped across a road in Beacon Hill that is 15 to 20 feet wide.

“It jumped that without thinking about it. This was a beast. It was an animal. It was a fire like I’ve never seen in my life,” he said on the media bus.

In the early stages of the fire, he feared that as much as half the city could burn down “I just want to let the people know that we’re in pretty good shape,” he said. “Typical of the damaged areas you’ll see structures that are completely gone and structures that are intact.”

Allen said at one point the fire raced down a hill to the corner of a bank, but firefighters were able to halt the encroaching flames at the bank. Had they failed to stop it there, the fire would have destroyed the downtown district, he said.

But other neighborhoods were not spared. In the Abesand district, townhouses were completely destroyed, and charred children’s bikes could be seen in backyards. A parking facility was burned to the ground.

With yet another poll showing plunging downstate support for Gov. Bruce Rauner in a Republican district and the intense Republican freakout over Donald Trump’s impending presidential nomination and its impact on independent suburban women, there appears to be a growing feeling among Democrats, particularly in the Illinois Senate, that they need to get out of the way to let the other party crash and burn.

The almost yearlong state government impasse is most definitely having an impact on Rauner’s poll numbers. Bernie Schoenburg reported in the State Journal-Register last week that a Public Policy Polling poll of appointed Republican state Rep. Sara Wojcicki Jimenez’s Springfield-area district had Rauner upside down, with 37 percent approving of the way the governor is doing his job, while a majority of 54 percent disapproved.

Rauner won that district, 58-37, in 2014, according to Illinois Election Data’s numbers. So, basically Rauner’s numbers have flipped almost entirely the other way.

Another PPP poll of GOP state Rep. Terri Bryant’s southern Illinois district near Carbondale was even worse for the governor. Rauner won Rep. Bryant’s district, 60-33, but 57 percent of voters in that district disapprove of Rauner’s job performance, while only 33 percent approve. That’s just

A PPP poll taken last August in Bryant’s district had the governor’s job approval rating at 40 percent and his disapproval rating was 51. So, that’s a net loss of 13 points in eight months. And, again, this is a Republican district, albeit one that has plenty of government workers.

Rep. Bryant is also experiencing a freefall if the pollster’s numbers are correct. Last August, PPP had her at a 50 percent job approval rating and a 27 percent disapproval rating. Now, she’s at 42 percent approval and 43 percent disapproval. That’s a huge 24-point swing.

Meanwhile, Gallup’s daily March tracking polls showed 70 percent of women nationally had an unfavorable view of the presumptive nominee Trump. That number is surely higher in the more Democratic-leaning Illinois, where independent suburban women have been the deciding factor in just about every major statewide race since 1990.

It doesn’t take a genius to figure

out why Rauner recently let it be known that he won’t endorse Trump and won’t attend the Republican convention in Cleveland this summer, and why, as I write this, appointed Comptroller Leslie Munger is expected to make the same decisions because she’s up for special election this fall.

And you also don’t have to be Einstein to realize that the one-two combo of Rauner and Trump could spell big trouble for down-ballot Republicans.

On the other hand, Rauner’s team says it has polling which shows, by a 2-1 margin, that voters blame House Speaker Michael Madigan more than the governor for the ongoing impasse.

To voters, Madigan is “the all-knowing puppet-master,” explained one Rauner official last week. Madigan’s been around so long and is believed to have so much control over Illinois politics and government that he’s seen by voters as “the key to getting something done.”

So, as long as this impasse is going on, Rauner’s legislative allies have a handy pivot they can use, paid for with oil tanker loads of the wealthy Rauner’s cash. Whenever Democratic legislators or candidates demand their Republican opponents answer for the latest Trump outrage or their support for and/or from the unpopular Rauner, the Republicans can turn

it back on the Democrats by demanding they justify their support for and/ or from the obstructive Speaker Madigan (or Democratic Party of Illinois Chairman Madigan, in the case of Senate candidates).

But even if yet another “Fire Madigan” effort by Republicans isn’t as effective as they believe it will be (the first two tries failed badly), many Democrats will freely admit right now that voters are overwhelmingly blaming incumbents rather than a single political party or person for the impasse – and there are a whole lot more Democratic incumbents than Republicans in the General Assembly.

In a campaign, once your opponent goes down you never take your boot off that person’s neck. So, with Rauner and Republican legislators going down and Trump about to make a big splash, there’s naturally plenty of temptation among a certain type of Democrat (*** cough *** intheHouse! *** cough ***) to keep this impasse going.

But all those legislative Democrats may wind up doing if the impasse lasts through November is unhelpfully distract Illinois voters from the weirdness at the national and statewide levels.

For some young people ‘gap year’ may improve college success About 3.3 million students are expected to graduate from U.S. high schools this year. One of President Barack Obama’s daughters is among them. [Last week] the White House announced Malia will not go directly to college. She is taking a so-called “gap year” after graduation and will attend Harvard University in the fall of 2017.

The two-sentence statement from the Office of the First Lady provides no information about why Malia is delaying college or what she plans to do. However, waiting until her father is out of office means she will not be accompanied on campus by a Secret Service contingent, which typically includes a small team of heavily armed agents for family members of a

sitting president.

Her decision has sparked fresh discussion about the idea of young people taking a hiatus from formal education after high school. There is no shortage of speculation and opinion on the issue. Of course whether it’s a good idea depends on the individual young person. And it is difficult to deny that many of them – for whatever reason – are not ready for college.

The statistics on “persistence” cannot be ignored.

About 30 percent of students who started college in the fall of 2013 did not return to any U.S. college in the fall of 2014, according to the most recent data from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center.

Think about that. Nearly one in three

students. They didn’t transfer to a different school. They didn’t go back.

In Iowa, only about 40 percent of students who enter a four-year public college graduate in four years. Less than 70 percent graduate in six years.

The millions of Americans who start college but don’t finish may be worse off than those who never attended. Many have student loans to repay with no college degree to secure a higher-paying job. They may have fallen behind their peers in obtaining work experience. Potential employers may perceive them as unable to finish what they start. Worst of all, they may perceive themselves as failures.

Yet our society encourages everyone leaving high school to immediately embark on a new educational

endeavor because that is key to earning a decent living. Most parents can’t stomach the idea of an able-bodied, adult child lounging on the couch playing video games for months. If graduates aren’t academically or emotionally prepared, some parents still push them and hope for the best.

But not immediately attending college may be exactly what some young people need. Working 40 hours a week in a minimum-wage job can do wonders to help someone understand the value of higher education. It buys extra time for their brain to develop.

It may improve their chances of staying in school and earning a degree.

And isn’t that the point?

However, after taking command on the strength of a six-run fourth inning, Joliet West scored three times in the sixth on wild pitches with the wet ball to finish off a 12-2 SouthWest Suburban Blue victory over visiting Joliet Central.

“They came ready to play,” West

coach Heather Suca said of Central.

“We knew it wouldn’t be easy against them. We were ready for a good game, and I thought we played real well.”

The Tigers (14-10, 5-4) trailed, 2-1, entering the bottom of the third inning, when they scored twice to take a lead they would not relinquish. The Steelmen (9-12, 1-8) still were down, 3-2, entering the bottom of the fourth and could have had the lead at that point if not for two baserunning misadventures.

In the Central second, Hana May Cardona doubled home a run to tie it, 1-1. She attempted to advance to third

on a pitch in the dirt and West catcher DeShonte Smith threw her out. On the next pitcher from winner Sidney Budzinski, Christina Valentino belted a solo home run over the left-center field fence.

Then in the top of the fourth, with runners on second and third and one out, Brenna Rande hit a slow ground ball toward shortstop Kristen Ames.

Pinch-runner Kaitlin Facchina and Ames collided in the base path. Facchini was called out for interference and Shelby Fischer, the runner on third who would have scored easily, was sent back to third.

“We hurt ourselves on the bases,” Central coach Erin Douglas said. “We had the runners out on the bases and we also let a couple of popups get away.

“The only thing about (Cardona) being out at third, though, is that was an aggressive out. I have no problem with aggressive outs. We’ll try to be aggressive when we can, but we also have to minimize mistakes. With Hannah (Gawenda, the losing pitcher) making great pitches, we have to make the plays we should make.”

A day after coach Malik Tabet’s men’s team assured themselves of a second-straight trip to the Round of 16, his women’s squad used two huge comebacks in doubles play to pull off the same feat by also returning to the NCAA Championships, which will be held in Denver.

Although the score was 5-1 in the teams’ first meeting, one doubles match was decided in a tiebreaker and two singles matches went to three sets so different results weren’t surprising. But what stunned the Flyers was the fashion in which the two doubles matches turned.

The Flyers’ No. 1 team of Dora Andrejszki and Nora Mindiyarova and their No. 2 squad of seniors Megan Nguyen and Jill Wetmore both built

5-2 leads against their opponents.

But UIndy’s Hanna Volikova and Florence Renard rallied for an 8-6 victory at No. 1 doubles to turn the momentum in their favor. Then Allie Smith and Macey Speer won by tiebreaker 9-8 (13-11) in a back-and-forth match at No. 2 doubles to compliment an earlier 8-0 win by Selenay Heper and Paige Olsen over Megan Conlin and Hannah Cross at No. 3 doubles.

Andrejszki and Mindiyarova, who came into the regional ranked sixth in the nation and first in the region, won 8-5 over Volikova and Renard in the earlier meeting. And when the same No. 2 doubles squads played a month ago, Nguyen and Wetmore were winners in a tiebreaker.

Needing to capture just two victories from the six singles matches, the Greyhounds wrapped things up when Heper won 6-0, 6-0 over Conlin at No. 5 singles and Olsen claimed a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Cross at No. 6 singles.

She had two hits, one a bunt single, and two walks in four plate appearances and scored three runs. She also stole two bases, as did No. 2 hitter Sarah Gersch and No. 3 hitter Kiley Robb.

“I really like having Kristen in the leadoff spot,” Suca said. “Her first atbat of the game usually dictates how we are going to play. She works the count, gets on base and she’s fast.”

“I definitely try to put the ball in play and then run as fast as I can,” said Ames, who said she sometimes will steal on her own.

Robb doubled home a run in the first, hit a sacrifice fly in the third and drove in a third run when being hit by a pitch with the bases full in the fourth. Mulder hit the ball on the button all day, flying to right in the first, hitting a line fly to right in the third, adding a long sacrifice fly to right in the fourth and then a hard single to left in the sixth.

Budzinski, who pitched a four-hitter in the difficult conditions, put a cap on the six-run fourth when she belted a long three-run homer to right-center field.

“Kiley (Robb) has been consistent, Madi (Mulder) really is coming along and we played good defense all the way around,” Suca said.

“They tried me a game or two at shortstop and I guess they liked me there,” Ames said. “I’ll do whatever I can for the team.”

“Having Gersch to play center field allows us to play Ames at shortstop,” Suca said. “Our defense is coming

along. I was really impressed with our defense in these conditions, and we were coming off prom weekend, too.”

The rest of the formula Monday was to get the offense in gear against Gawenda.

“We were all talking in the middle of the game that we needed to score

more runs,” Buzinski said. “In the fourth inning, we finally got it figured out.”

A Central error kept the inning alive, and five of the six runs in the inning were unearned. Still, they counted, and Budzinski’s three-run homer was the haymaker.

PLAINFIELD – The University of Indianapolis women’s tennis team had more than enough incentive for earning a trip to the NCAA Division II Round of 16.

Not only were the Greyhounds trying to get back to that level for a second-straight year but in order to do so, they would have to avenge a 5-1 defeat to Lewis University that they suffered exactly one month ago.

Playing in the same facility where they dropped a 5-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference match to the Flyers on April 9, UIndy rallied in a pair of key doubles matches to jump out to an early 3-0 lead and then claimed two quick wins in singles to capture a 5-0 victory over Lewis in Monday’s NCAA Midwest Regional final at the Five Star Tennis Center.

The Flyers (19-5), who had won

their last 13 matches, were hoping to reach the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2014 and for the third time in five years but instead fell for the first time since dropping a 6-3 decision to Tiffin on March 25. UIndy (15-7) beat Tiffin 5-1 on Sunday to advance to Monday’s finals.

“They’re a good team and they played very well,” Flyers coach Brett Bridel said of UIndy. “And we knew coming in that they were going to be very motivated, as well. It was just a few points here and there at first and second doubles or we could have been up 2-1. They played tough and we didn’t play as well as we could have, but that happens in this game.

“While we’re disappointed in today’s outcome, we can’t let that overtake what a great year we had. We won the conference tournament for our seniors, and that was a great way for them to go out. We were hoping that this season was going to be extended

JOLIET – BJ Thomas’ 1970 smash hit, “Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head,” should have been the song of the day as longtime rivals Lockport and Joliet Central met Monday afternoon at Central.

In a key game for the six-time defending SouthWest Suburban Blue baseball champion Porters, lefty Ryan Gabriel (3-1) fired a four-hit shutout in a 7-0 victory. The game was called because of rain after six innings as Lockport (13-10, 8-2) remained tied atop the conference standings with archrival Sandburg (183, 8-2), which blanked Bolingbrook, 6-0, to keep pace. Bolingbrook (13-10, 7-3) is a game behind.

The Porters got on the board in the top of the first as red-hot third baseman Gavin Lovesky hammered his third homer of the season over the left-center field fence.

Lockport stole the second run in the second, executing the old walkoff play to perfection. With Steve Salvino on third and Matt Harder on first, Harder broke for second. When Steelmen freshman catcher Ethan Darling threw down to

Ryan Travis added to the lead with an RBI single. Kevin Davis had an RBI single in Lockport’s two-run fifth to end the scoring.

Steelmen attack. Gabriel fanned five and walked two.

Next for the Porters is a 4:30 p.m.

Wednesday date at Ed Flink Field with Sandburg. The teams also will meet at 4:30 p.m. Friday in Orland Park.

“This was a big win for us. Ryan Gabriel was outstanding on the mound,” Porters coach Andy Satunas said. “We played great defense, turning two double plays, and we had clutch hitting. Gavin (Lovesky) got us started with his big home run.

“We have had a tremendous rivalry with Sandburg for many years. We have to come out and play the game and not worry about Sandburg, just concern ourselves with Lockport.”

Joliet Central (6-19, 1-9) was led Tom Langley, who singled and doubled in two trips. DeBenedetti added a pair of singles.

“We competed well,” Joliet Central coach Kevin Fitzgerald said. “We played good defense and the problem was we just couldn’t get any hits. Ryan Gabriel is one of the many good arms Lockport has and he was tough on us.

“I am fortunate to have a great group of kids who I really enjoy coaching. I really hope they can enjoy some success and maybe we can make a little noise in the upcoming state tournament.”

University of Saint Francis wins 2 thrillers to stay alive

By JEFF DE GRAW Shaw Media correspondent ELGIN – In dramatic fashion, the University of Saint Francis baseball team staved off elimination Monday in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball tournament with two come-from-behind victories in elimination games.

The seventh-seeded Fighting Saints beat the fifth seed, Saint Ambrose, 12-8, in the opener and then eliminated second seed Judson, 4-3. It was USF’s second victory over the Eagles in the tournament.

The Saints collected 31 hits on the day, 18 in the first game and 13 in the second.

“We live to play another day,” St. Francis coach Brian Michalak said.

“I don’t know quite what to say right now. That was the bad and good of defensive baseball for us in those two games.”

USF will play at 1 p.m. Tuesday against the loser of the winners’ bracket game between Saint Xavier and Robert Morris. Should the Saints win

that game, they would have to beat the unbeaten team at 4 p.m. Tuesday and again Wednesday.

In the first game against St. Ambrose, the Saints committed five errors that led to six of the Bees’ eight runs.

Trailing 1-0 going to the top of the fifth, USF put up five runs on an RBI hit from Kevin Mampe (Lincoln-Way Central) along with two RBIs from seniors Rick Faron and Zach Barkdull to take a 5-1 lead.

Errors proved costly to the Saints in the sixth as St. Ambrose scored seven runs, with only one earned, and took a 8-5 lead.

Trailing 8-6 in the top of the eighth, junior Kyle Burton (3 for 4, 3 runs, 2 RBIs) had an RBI single before Rick Faron hit a long two-run home run over the right-center field fence to put the Saints up, 9-8.

“I was looking for a fastball,” Faron said. “Just trying to put it in play. He threw a curve then the fastball was a little high, but I went after it. When we got down, we had a good approach in the dugout. Just getting one at a time.

We score runs in championship innings and that end is what it’s about.”

Faron, in the two games, went 8 for 10 at the plate and had five RBIs, all of those in the initial game.

Dan Darling (Coal City) pitched four relief innings in picking up the win after starting the game at second base.

“It doesn’t bother me at all to go to the mound from second,” Darling said.

“I do what I’m supposed to do and actually I get a great view of the batters’ approach from the field.”

In the second elimination game against Judson, the Eagles scored single runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 2-0 lead.

The Saints scored a run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double by Nick Fleischauer (Minooka, Joliet Junior College) to make it 2-1.

Trailing 3-2 in the top of the seventh, Judson had two on and one out when a deep fly ball flew to left field.

Saints sophomore left fielder Pat Michalak crashed into the wall as he caught the ball and recovered to finish an inning-ending double play.

“I felt the warning track and took two more steps, caught the ball and hit the wall,” Michalak said. “I thought my glove flew off my hand.”

With momentum on their side, the Saints scored two in the bottom of the seventh on RBI hits by C.J. Duffek and Barkdull (2 RBIs) to take a 4-3 lead.

In the top of the ninth, the Eagles had two outs and a runner on third.

But a laser throw from Faron at first to Barkdull catching nailed the runner trying to score from third on a slowly hit grounder.

“The plays at the plate today were bang-bang,” Barkdull said. “I just try to block the plate and apply the tag, Those were close.”

Senior Cori Herbert pitched the complete-game win for the Saints, giving up eight hits, recording five strikeouts and walking only two.

“I knew I had to keep people off the bases, especially the leadoff guy,” Herbert said. “I’m not a strikeout pitcher, so I have to let the defense work. You need 27 outs to win the game and we did that. It was tight at the end, but this is what playoff baseball is all about.”

Ruettiger sets 3 world records in AAPF meet SUBMITTED REPORTS IDAHO FALLS, Idaho – Joliet’s Francis “Rudy” Ruettiger set three world records and won the Most Valuable Lifter award at the recent AAPF National Powerlifting Championships.

Competing in the 181-pound class in the 60-64 age group, Ruettiger, owner of Rudy’s Gym, won his division and set the records in the squat with 630 pounds, the bench press with 360 and total lift with 1,441. His other lift was 451 in the dead lift, which he also won.

Bolingbrook police officer Dale Szymanski represented Rudy’s Gym in the APF National Championships in Chicago and finished first in the bench press with 473 pounds. He competed in the 275-pound class in the 45-49 age group.

Mampe started 27 games at shortstop, 13 at second base and 12 as a pitcher.

He has a team-high .356 batting average with a pair of homers and 36 RBIs in 56 games. In regular-season play, he tied for third in the CCAC in hits (69) and ranked seventh in runs scored (43) and 10th in total bases (87). As a pitcher, he posted a 5-4 record with a 4.24 earned run average. In seven conference starts, he was 4-3 with a 3.30 ERA.

Joliet-area schools fared well in last weekend’s IHSA bass fishing sectionals, with several earning berths in the state tournament May 20-21 at Carlyle Lake.

Minooka #2 was the champion in the sectional at Heidecke Lake with a total of 4 pounds 12 ounces. Newark #1 was second at 4 pounds 3 ounces and Morris #1 took third with 3 pounds 4 ounces. The top three finishers advance to state, with the fourth-place team at each sectional, in this case Minooka #1 at 2 pounds 15 ounces, being named a state alternate.

The Minooka #2 team consisted of coach Stan Tischer, driver Joe Tischer and team members Mitch DeGraaf, Brent Beckwith, A.J. Wojtowicz and Raven Pointer.

Morris #1 is coached by driver Ray

NASCAR needs to take stand on North Carolina’s law IN THE PITS Jenna Fryer

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Pat McCrory likes to spin a tale meant to illustrate his love for high octane and burned rubber.

It was 30 years ago, when the future governor of North Carolina was a 19-year-old who drove a ’72 Fiat. McCrory says he saw the back gate had been left open at Charlotte Motor Speedway, so he slipped on in and watched David Pearson win the World 600.

McCrory draws hearty guffaws when he tells that story during appearances on behalf of NASCAR. He talks about how during his days as mayor of Charlotte, he used NASCAR to help recruit talent to the city, “especially mechanics, electricians, the aerospace engineers, the metallurgy specialists,” McCrory said last October.

McCrory also lauded an economic impact study that the speedway said shows a $450 million contribution from the track to the Charlotte-area economy.

It’s fair to say that McCrory loves NASCAR and NASCAR loves the governor.

That’s now a risky alignment as McCrory has doubled-down on North Carolina’s so-called “bathroom law” requiring transgender people to use public restrooms corresponding to the gender on their birth certificate. The

The law has been criticized by gay rights groups and led Bruce Springsteen and Pearl Jam to cancel concerts in North Carolina. PayPal reversed plans to open a 400-employee facility in Charlotte, and Deutsche Bank froze expansion plans near Raleigh. Nearly 200 corporate leaders from across the country, including Charlotte-based Bank of America, have called for the law to be repealed.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver

said last month that the All-Star Game won’t be played in Charlotte next February if the law does not change. He also said he sees no reason to move the game now because he’d prefer to first try to work with state officials.

That’s sort of the same stance taken

by NASCAR, which waited well over a month to weigh in on the topic at all. NASCAR has offices in downtown Charlotte, its research and development center is located near Charlotte Motor Speedway, and most race teams are based in North Carolina. Yet NASCAR Chairman Brian France has been standoffish regarding the law, choosing to stay out of the fray with a soft stance of having behind-the-scenes discussions.

As always, the debate rages over the

mingling of sports and politics. Since sports are supposed to be entertainment and a distraction from real life, many fans prefer their teams and players stay out of the fray.

But NASCAR doesn’t get that pass because the series has so openly blurred the lines. In one calendar year alone, France said the Confederate flag is not welcome at NASCAR race tracks, he endorsed Donald Trump for president and the pre-race invocation at Texas Motor Speedway was used to pray for a “Jesus Man” to win the White House.

NASCAR is so deep into this political cycle that there’s no climbing out of it anytime soon.

So what does NASCAR plan to do about a law that McCrory said Monday is not a North Carolina issue but a national issue?

Well, NASCAR could move the All-Star Race scheduled for May 21 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. It would be a dramatic decision, one that would place a significant burden on fans who have already paid for travel arrangements, and a blow to Speedway Motorsports Inc., the owners of the speedway.

It won’t happen and NASCAR is just as unlikely to move the Coca-Cola 600 on Memorial Day weekend. But even starting that conversation could get McCrory’s attention.

Unless, of course, NASCAR is OK with the law as it is currently written.

If that’s the case, then silence and inaction probably is the best policy. After all, the governor is a NASCAR fan.

Improved Plainfield East defeats Romeoville in straight sets

The Bengals continued their recent improved play Monday when they picked up another Southwest Prairie Conference win, prevailing, 25-21, 2521, over visiting Romeoville.

“We struggled with the first half of conference, but now we’re kind of coming up strong,” East coach Alex Rodriguez said. “We’re stringing things together a lot more often and we’re kind of taking some teams by surprise at first and then rolling with it and I’ll take that all day.

“We were a little sluggish with a

Monday night game and Romeoville had some great digs and passes, so hats off to them. I like my team’s energy. They’re just like ready to go all day long and the senior leadership has a big part to do with that. We’ve made leaps and bounds since the start of the year and we have all of the right pieces working where they should be.”

East (14-14) got back to the .500 mark, but things certainly didn’t come easily against a Spartans squad that trailed most of the way but also seemed to remain pretty close.

“I have a good crew that battles and doesn’t quit on each other and they’re willing to go to the front lines for one another,” Spartans coach Deb Fehrenbacher said. “Height is something that we struggle with. Every team in the conference has one or two big men and we don’t.

“But these guys definitely have heart. And I have the benefit of having a really good setter in James Lefaiver who runs a lot of stuff. He’s excellent and has great hands and does a great job of reading the ball and setting his team up.”

In the initial set, the Bengals grabbed a 14-10 lead but the Spartans closed to within 16-15 following a kill

by Gio Dekire (six kills) and an ace serve from Thomas Kurzynski (three kills, two aces). But kills from Jake Kurzrock and Dominic Culotta helped East go up 19-15.

The host’s advantage moved to 2217 before Romeoville took advantage of two hitting errors and a net violation to close to within 22-20. After Matt Binkus got a block for East and Dekire answered with a kill, the hosts closed out the first set on a pair of errors.

East took a quick 7-3 lead in the second set and stretched its advantage to 14-9 on a kill by Binkus. Romeoville closed to within 15-13 following a block

by Brad Gabrelcik (eight blocks) and a kill by Dekire, but the Bengals went back up 19-14, thanks to a sequence that included a kill by Nick Jenca (eight kills), an ace by Nick Sullivan and a kill from Brian Michalski.

But once again, the Spartans fought back. Kills by Dekire and James Lefaiver (nine assists) helped to fuel a 4-0 run that made it 20-19. However, East responded with its own 4-0 spurt with Binkus getting three kills and Noah Van Wyk (four kills) adding another.

Romeoville, which also got three kills from Kyle Pociask, took advantage of a net violation and a kill by Gabrelcik to pull to within 24-21 before Van Wyk ended things with another kill.

Bears sign 7 draft picks, 10 undrafted rookies

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@shawmedia.com The Bears signed seven of their nine draft picks Monday – Cody Whitehair, Nick Kwiatkoski, Deiondre’ Hall, Deon Bush, Jordan Howard, DeAndre Houston-Carson and Daniel Braverman.

First-round pick Leonard Floyd and thirdround pick Jonathan Bullard are the only two members of the 2016 draft class who have not signed, although their deals should be done soon, with rookie minicamp set to begin Friday.

In recent years, the Bears have been one of, if not the, first teams to get all their draft picks signed with contract negotiator Cliff Stein.

This year, with rookie minicamp pushed back an extra week, there was no rush for new negotiator Joey Laine.

The Bears also announced the signings of 10 undrafted rookies, highlighted by outside linebacker Roy Robertson-Harris, cornerbacks Taveze Calhoun and Kevin Peterson, and tight end Brent Braunecker.

The roster is at 90 players.

New home for Slauson: Former Bears guard Matt Slauson needed less than a week to find a new team, signing a two-year deal with the Chargers on Monday. According to ESPN’s Adam Caplan, Slauson is set to play center for a Chargers team that has had a revolving door at the position. Slauson filled in admirably at center when called upon last season because of an injury to Hroniss Grasu.

Former Kansas State offensive lineman Cody Whitehair is among the draft picks who have signed with the Bears.

The Bears released Slauson after the draft after selecting Whitehair, a guard, in the second round. They also signed veteran guards Ted Larsen and Manny Ramirez in the offseason. In San Diego, Slauson will reunite with Dave DeGuglielmo, who is the Chargers’ assistant offensive line coach. He coached Slauson and the Jets’ O-line in 2012.

Scouting director on the move: Joe Douglas got only one draft as the Bears’ director of college scouting. According to multiple reports, Douglas has been hired by the Eagles to run Philadelphia’s personnel department under GM Howie Roseman. Douglas was with the Ravens’ front office from 2000 to 2015, working his way from being an area scout to being Baltimore’s national scout from 2012 to ‘15. The Bears hired Douglas to lead their scouting efforts last May after the 2015 draft.

Cubs-Sox World Series? Dream big VIEWS Rick Morrissey There’s no “too early” when it comes to talking about a Cubs-White Sox World Series. There’s only “too late,” usually after the first week of the season.

Everyone can look at the calendar and see it’s May. If the baseball calendar were a growth chart, May would be a toddler. We haven’t even gotten to June, the teen years.

So many things can happen. Angst. Rebellion. Girls. Cars. The infield fly rule.

But so many good things have happened to this point that it’s impossible not to consider a crosstown World Series. And why deprive ourselves? Chris Sale facing Kris Bryant? Jake Arrieta staring down Jose Abreu? Fans riding the CTA north, south and back again? It would be an El of a thing.

At 24-6 entering Monday, the Cubs had the best record in baseball. At 22-10, the Sox had the second-best record in baseball.

The Cubs are winning 80 percent of their games. They can’t keep that up. If they did, they would win 130 games. Not even Joe Maddon’s undying optimism has room for

that number. If the Sox keep up their pace, they’ll win 112 games. You can see why the town has lost its mind.

I’d like to say that every Chicago baseball fan is so happy about his team that he doesn’t have time to rip on the crosstown rival, but I know better. Dogs and cats.

Democrats and Republicans. Cubs fans and Sox fans.

No championship is won in April and May, but it can be lost there. So talk about it while you can. Both teams have the staying power to make this a season-long conversation. Both have great pitching staffs.

Yes, we are getting ahead of ourselves.

That’s the whole idea of sports, isn’t it? To dream big?

If it’s too much for you, if the concept of a Cubs-Sox World Series is too large to process, the teams play each other July 25 to 28, with the first two games at The Cell, the final two at Wrigley Field. Concentrate on that target. Trust me, it will be big enough.

Feeling cheated: Before the Cubs’ game Sunday, I asked manager Joe Maddon whether he would be able to enjoy Jake Arrieta’s battles against the Nationals’ Bryce Harper that afternoon. Enjoy it the way a fan would enjoy watching the reigning National League Cy Young award winner face the reigning NL most valuable player.

HEALTH Nursing homes turn to eviction to drop difficult patients

By MATT SEDENSKY The Associated Press NEW YORK – Nursing homes are increasingly evicting their most challenging residents, testing protections for some of society’s most vulnerable, advocates for the aged and disabled say.

Those targeted for eviction are frequently poor and suffering from dementia, with families unsure of what to do, according to residents’ allies. Removing them allows an often stretched-thin staff to avoid the demands of labor-intensive patients in favor of ones who are easier and more profitable.

“When they get tired of caring for the resident, they kick the resident out,” said Richard Mollot of the Long Term Care Community Coalition, a New York advocacy group.

Complaints and lawsuits across the U.S. point to a spike in evictions even as observers note available records only give a glimpse of the problem.

An Associated Press analysis of federal data from the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program finds complaints about discharges and evictions are up about 57 percent since 2000. It was the top-reported grievance in 2014, with 11,331 such issues logged by ombudsmen, who work to resolve problems faced by residents of nursing homes, assisted-living facilities and other adult-care settings.

The American Health Care Association, which represents nursing homes, defends the discharge process as lawful and necessary to remove residents who can’t be kept safe or who endanger the safety of others, and says processes are in place to ensure evictions aren’t done improperly. Dr. David Gifford, a senior vice president with the group, said a national policy discussion is necessary because there are a growing number of individuals with complex, difficult-to-manage cases who outpace the current model of what a nursing home offers.

“There are times these individuals can’t be managed or they require so much staff attention to manage them that the other residents are endangered,” he said.

The numbers of both nursing homes and residents in the U.S. have decreased in recent years; about 1.4 million people occupy about 15,600 homes now. The overall number of complaints across a spectrum of issues has fallen in the past decade, though complaints about evictions are down only slightly from their high-water mark in 2007, the federal figures show.

Meanwhile, the share of complaints that evictions and discharges represent has steadily grown, holding the top spot since 2010.

Advocates say offending facilities routinely flout federal law, trying to exploit and widen justifications for discharge. They say hospitalizations are a common time when facilities seek to purge residents, even though the Nursing Home Reform Act of 1987 guarantees Medicaid recipients’ beds must be held in their nursing homes during hospital stays of up to a week.

“They try and take the easy way out and refuse to let the person back in,” said Eric Carlson, an attorney who has contested evictions for the advocacy group Justice in Aging.

Bruce Anderson, 66, suffered a brain injury more than a decade ago, and had been through several transfers before ending up at Norwood Pines Alzheimer’s Care Center in Sacramento, California. His daughter, Sara Anderson, said the facility began insisting it wasn’t an appropriate setting for him, and after he was hospitalized with pneumonia, he wasn’t allowed back.

She saw the action as retaliatory after repeated complaints about her father’s care. She appealed the facility’s action and won, but said it still refused to let him back. He remains hospitalized.

“It doesn’t matter if you win or lose it, there’s not enforcement of these hearings. We didn’t know that the

hearing was pointless,” she said.

Norwood Pines did not return calls seeking comment.

Federal law allows unrequested transfers of residents for a handful of reasons: the facility’s closure; failure to pay; risk posed to the health and safety of others; improvement in the resident’s condition to the point of no longer needing the home’s services; or because the facility can no longer meet the person’s needs.

Though that final category is often cited in evictions, advocates dispute how often it fits.

“The majority of the time, it’s because the resident is considered difficult,” said Tony Chicotel, an attorney for California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform.

Chicotel says involuntary discharges are almost entirely focused on Medicaid beneficiaries and that economics sometimes play a role in the ousters.

Rather than a long-term Medicaid patient, many facilities would prefer to fill a bed with a private-pay resident or a short-term rehabilitation patient, whose care typically brings a far higher reimbursement rate under Medicare.

Vicki Becker of Sammamish, Washington, said she began receiving pressure from administrators at her mother’s assisted-living facility about two years ago to have the then-94-year-old transferred elsewhere. For the first six years she had lived in the home,

she had paid more than $5,000 monthly. It was only after Becker’s mother exhausted her savings and went on Medicaid that the facility initiated discharge proceedings, making her wonder whether money was a factor.

Becker hired a lawyer and enlisted the help of the local ombudsman to fight the eviction. Though the facility eventually dropped the discharge case, it left her feeling as if her mother’s rights had been violated.

“It was her home,” she said. “What an awful thing to do to somebody.”

Whatever facilities’ reasons, the process can be harrowing.

“It’s not just losing their home. It’s losing their whole community, it’s losing their familiar caregivers, it’s losing their roommate, it’s losing the people they sit with and have meals with,” said Alison Hirschel, an attorney who directs the Michigan Elder Justice Initiative and has fought evictions. “It’s completely devastating.”

Agyemang Bediako knows the feeling well. After breaking both legs in a jump from a burning building, he found himself recovering at a New York City nursing home. He said he was still undergoing rehabilitation when the facility told him it would be discharging him to a homeless shelter.

“I was panicked,” he said, describing his thoughts before a successful appeal of his case. “What am I going to do? I couldn’t even eat. I became depressed. I wanted to kill myself.”

28 Silver Cross Neuroscience Institute will host a free stroke symposium NEW LENOX – The Silver Cross Neuroscience Institute will host a free symposium May 21 for physicians, physician assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners, paramedics and allied health professionals who are interested in increasing their knowledge of the management and treatment of acute stroke.

“Stroke 2016 – A Comprehensive Multi-Disciplinary Team Approach in the Management and Treatment of Stroke” will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Tinley Park Convention Center.

WLRA DJs in Romeoville complete Presence Saint Joseph Medical 80-hour broadcast for hospital fund Center to host art contest ROMEOVILLE – Lewis University’s WLRA Radio raised more than $10,000 this academic year in support of the Lewis University Family Assistance Fund at Advocate Children’s Hospital in Oak Lawn and Park Ridge.

The money was raised through the radio station’s annual “To Kill a DJ” marathon.

The spring semester campaign was concluded with a record-breaking 80-hour broadcast shift by Breandan Rook of Chicago’s Mount Greenwood neighborhood and Taylor Tisoncik of Lockport. They started their broadcast by transmitting live in a Lewis University airplane that flew over the Romeoville region.

WLRA’s “To Kill a DJ” is an annual service-learning project for Lewis students that have WLRA Radio as a lab.

Students raise money through continuous on-air marathons with pledged support from listeners.

This year’s “To Kill a DJ” was organized under the leadership of Romeoville resident David Ridderhoff, WLRA general manager and student chairman of the Lewis University Family Assistance Fund 2015-2016.

JOLIET – Associates, physicians, and volunteers of Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center recently showed off their creative talents by submitting photographs, paintings, and sculptures for PSJMC’s annual Associate Art Contest.

Pieces were exhibited in the hospital’s main lobby for a week, where associates and visitors were given the opportunity to vote on their favorite pieces.

• Sleep. Older adults spend less time in deep sleep. As a result, you may wake up feeling unrested. But age should not affect your ability to fall asleep, stay asleep or fall back to sleep after awakening in the middle of the night. These changes might be due to a breathing disorder, such as sleep apnea, or a medication side effect.

• Fatigue. You might not have the energy you once did. But you should not feel constant exhaustion, which might be a sign of a medical condition.

• Thinking skills. It’s normal to misplace your keys, forget someone’s name or take longer to learn something new. Again, whether you define it as a problem is a matter of degree.

I once had a patient who was upset because he had misplaced his wallet. I reassured him we all do that occasionally. Then he told me he’d found his wallet placed on the top shelf of his freezer. I decided he needed testing for Alzheimer’s disease.

Unfortunately, he was in the early stages.

There clearly is a problem if you’re confused about directions when driving in what should be familiar places or if you’re having trouble doing your finances. While it could be an early sign of dementia, it also could be a simply treated medication side effect.

Dear Dr. K: Every time I complain about a new medical issue, my husband says, “You’re 84. What do you expect?” How do I know if my complaints are just a consequence of aging or if there’s an actual problem?

Dear Reader: I’m not 84, but I ask myself that question regularly. You don’t have to be a doctor to understand new symptoms develop as we age. But some changes aren’t a normal part of the aging process. I’ll discuss some common age-related health changes, as well as changes that suggest there might be a problem.

• Vision. With age, the lenses in the eyes of most people become cloudy. As a result, we need more light to see, read and avoid falling. Impaired close-up vision also is normal, as is an increase in “floaters.”

However, it is not normal to lose your side vision. If you do, that could be a symptom of glaucoma. A sudden increase in floaters, accompanied by flashes, also is cause for concern. It could mean problems with the retina, such as a detached retina.

• Hearing. It might be harder to hear someone speaking, especially with background noise, in later years. This normally happens in most people, but whether it is a problem is up to you to decide.

But when it sounds as if everyone is mumbling or you no longer hear the phone or the doorbell ring, that’s not normal; don’t ignore it. A simple earwax buildup might be causing the problem. If not, talk to your doctor about getting your hearing tested.

• Urinary habits. As we age, bladder muscles weaken, causing a more frequent and urgent need to urinate. But if frequent bathroom breaks interfere with your daily activities or sleep, see a doctor. He or she

I recently had them removed because I suspected they were leaking (saline). They were uncomfortable. I could sleep only on my back. Running was not fun. They didn’t feel natural and they didn’t look great naked. I realized having them was a big mistake.

“Doesn’t Want to Lose Him” (Dec. 16) wants breast implants, but her boyfriend is against it. I had breast augmentation at age 27 for the same reasons she wants it. I was flat-chested, and clothing, especially summer clothing, never fit or looked right.

My husband was supportive, and it turned out to be one of the best things I’ve done for my self-confidence. I not only became more outgoing, but my career also took off.

I want to urge “Doesn’t” to talk to her plastic surgeon about her goals. She shouldn’t allow herself to be pushed into a larger size than she feels comfortable with, and she shouldn’t be unrealistic about how it will change her.

She implied the surgery wouldn’t alter who she is inside, but isn’t that her goal – to have more self-assurance? She’ll see a big change in her life. It will be gradual, but she’ll become a more confident version of herself.

She should forget the boyfriend if he can’t find it in himself to be supportive, because if she does get the implants, I predict in a year, she will have outgrown him anyway.
