Burlington Zephyr – Chicago By the 1920s, the Burlington railroad had extended its reach into 14 states and had more than 10,000 miles of track. Operating out of Union Station in Chicago, the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad was best remembered for its Zephyr lightweight streamlined trains, which were revolutionary and very successful when they debuted in Chicago 1934.

In the face of growing competition from airplanes and automobiles, Ralph Budd, president of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad (generally known as the CB&Q or simply Burlington), decided to develop a revolutionary new train that would capture the public’s attention and use the newly developed two-stroke diesel engine.

In 1932, Ralph Budd joined forces with Edward Budd (no relation), an auto body manufacturer from Philadelphia, to help revive their industry and increase its revenue. Ralph Budd wanted to bring improvements in speed, efficiency and appearance; whereas, Edward sought to bring his innovative use of stainless steel and streamlining to the appearance.

At the same time, Charles Kettering of General Motors was involved in the research of new diesel engines, including two-stroke and lightweight designs. His work on perfecting a new diesel engine, the first of which was a 600-horsepower unit, eventually would be the unit that powered the Pioneer Zephyr for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad.

On May 26, 1934, the world’s first diesel powered, stainless steel streamlined train would leave Denver for Chicago; beginning the longest, nonstop railroad trip ever attempted.

The train reached the unheard of speed of 112 mph, cutting the travel time to Chicago in half. The nonstop “Dawnto-Dusk” dash took 13 hours and 5 minutes at an average speed of 77 mph. This historic trip inspired a 1934 film and the train’s nickname, “The Silver Streak.”

While the movie was popular, the real Zephyr was an unqualified hit. After

The Pioneer Zephyr Train at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago today. completing a wildly successful exhibition tour of the West, the Zephyr returned to Chicago where it was put into regular service from Lincoln to Kansas City on Nov. 11, 1934.

Renamed the Pioneer Zephyr in 1936 to celebrate its position as the first train in Burlington’s new fleet, the streamliner was responsible for increased ridership and revenue growth for the company for the next several years.

On Oct. 23, 1936, a new Denver Zephyr set a new world’s speed record, dashing from Chicago to Denver in 12 hours and 12 minutes, beating the May 1934 record by 53 minutes.

Soon, more Zephyrs were built and new routes came online in the Midwest.

Burlington’s favor, the company began to find ways to improve its service.

By the early 1940s, Burlington introduced all-female Zephyrettes, a staff of onboard hostesses, adding passenger comfort to the list of unique luxuries at which the Zephyrs already excelled.

Within a decade, the passenger rail business began to suffer an irreversible decline. In 1960, the Pioneer Zephyr was retired from service but has long remained a shining symbol of the streamliner era.

Today, the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago is home to the old Pioneer Zephyr. Museum curators have restored the locomotive to its original grandeur and created a permanent exhibition to honor its distinctive history.​

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com WILMINGTON – Tom Lewis of Coal City spent his Saturday doing what he loves to do – taking photographs.

He took advantage of the Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie’s “Midewin Bison Expedition,” a public event where the bison herd was moved out of its typical pasture that encompasses 1,200 acres of prairie to the event pasture, a much-smaller 40 acres.

“Nature is what I love shooting,” Lewis said.

The bison is where he will remember taking his last film photograph ever. He said he used the last of his film at the event, and now will shoot just digital.

Cindy Parks of Joliet also showed up to take photographs, but the herd, which huddled along the south fence

line, was out of range of most camera lenses. That is, until Lewis let her attach a longer lens to her camera, bringing the herd up close in the viewfinder.

“I came out to take pictures and see the bison up close,” Parks said. “I’ve never seen them before.”

The bison herd – four bulls and 23 cows – were reintroduced to the prairie’s pastures in October. The bulls came from a USDA/APHIS facility near Fort Collins, Colorado, and the cows came from a ranch near Mitchell, South Dakota.

All the female bison already were pregnant when they arrived, and babies now are part of the herd. Pregnancy for a female bison lasts about 9½ months.

The expedition was the first official showing of the bison herd since they moved in last fall.

Staff and volunteers were on hand and warned visitors before they exited the bus that the buffalo were very sensitive to stress, and asked guests refrain from adding stress to the large animals.

in the park.

Aidan Eaheart, 10, and Tanner Leonard, 10, both of Frankfort, said they learned a lot about bison while they visited and were excited to see them.

“I think the bison are awesome,” Leonard said. “It’s cool to see them in person and the calves are so small, they were hard to see.”

Eaheart said he didn’t know they liked to hide in the tall grasses until he visited.

Leonard was most impressed with the reason the bison were brought to Midewin – an attempt to help the land.

Pink Heals holds Mother’s Day walk

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media correspondent CHANNAHON – In honor of his wife, Cathy O’Connor, who died in 2015 from ovarian cancer, Steve O’Connor of Joliet joined 30 family members and friends Sunday to honor his wife and support the organization that helped her through her battle.

“Before she passed, Pink Heals came out to the house for a visit. We had over 100 people come see her, and we had a picnic,” O’Connor said. “That was one of the best days of my life, seeing the love and support. Since then, we have been committed to Pink Heals for my wife.”

A sea of pink filled the Channahon Village Hall parking lot Sunday for the second annual Pink Heals Joliet Area Chapter Mother’s Day 5K Walk. More than 1,500 walkers – 300 more than last year’s inaugural event – gathered to support Pink Heals and those who have fought and are in the midst of a cancer fight.

“The Channahon leaders and community has been amazing. They see how Pink Heals has helped those in the area and see how important it is to support and rally behind the residents,” Pink Heals Joliet Chapter President and Co-Founder Matt Fleck said.

Pink Heals, with its slogan to “Support women and their families, not causes,” is a national organization; Joliet has had a chapter since 2013. Fleck said 100 percent of the money raised benefits those with cancer in its own communities, along with the organization being 100 percent volunteer run.

More than 1,500 walkers came Sunday out to take part in the second annual Pink Heals Joliet Area Chapter Mother’s Day Walk in Channahon. The walk raised around $40,000 to support those in the area who battle cancer. to Mokena and Plainfield to Braidwood who have cancer, and offers a support system, as well as financial assistance.

“I have been with Pink Heals for almost four years, and have now been diagnosed with cancer for my third time.

Pink Heals is my support team,” Joliet resident Ereen Koscielski said. “This walk is amazing, and I hope it gets bigger and bigger. We need to support all mothers.”

The event opened with prayer by

the Rev. Father Peter Jarosz of St. Ann Parish in Channahon, and an honor to Dr. Spomenka Jercinovic of Shorewood for her battle with cancer. Jercinovic told the crowd how she had gone to her doctor for an unrelated issue, and after she was urged to have a mammogram – since she said it had been 10 years since her last one – her tests came back positive for breast cancer.

“I want to stress the importance of getting a mammogram to all women.

Once you turn 40, go out and get a mammogram,” Jercinovic said.

Angie Caldwell, director of Home Visits for Pink Heals Joliet Chapter, sent the crowd off through the streets of Channahon, which were lined with pink balloons and signs to support the cause.

“We surpassed what we made last year with walkers and merchandise before this year’s event even started. I think we will bring in around $40,000 this year,” Caldwell said.

Grant money available for Will County businesses eyeing exports

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Small and medium-sized businesses in Will County interested in maximizing their exports potential can now apply for grant dollars offered through Metro Chicago Exports.

John Greuling, president and CEO with the Will County Center for Economic Development, said the Metro Chicago Exports program – which awards up to $5,000 in grant money per company – is a “great opportunity.”

More companies in Will County need to be aware that the global market is in reach, he said.

“[Exporting] can be very daunting for companies,” Greuling said. “And when I talk to companies, when we do our retention survey, I ask them if they are exporting, and they say they’ve never really thought about it.”

Metro Chicago Exports is a collaboration between the city of Chicago and seven Illinois collar counties, including Will County. The goal is to increase exports for small and mid-sized businesses.

The deadline to apply is May 27.

Grants will be awarded in July.

JP Morgan Chase funds the grants, which are awarded based on need and the planned use for the money. A new feature this year is a second wave of

grants, Greuling said. Recipient companies in the first round will get a chance to win $30,000 later this year for a larger export project.

The U.S. Small Business Administration defines small businesses as having 500 or fewer employees, but Greuling said the purpose of this grant is to help even smaller companies – with 100 employees or fewer – that have never considered exports, or need a financial boost in pursuing the global marketplace.

The grant dollars can used be for consulting, training, identifying overseas markets for various industries, launching an export program within the company, or offsetting costs to at-

tend trade shows to network.

This year’s grant program “builds on the success” of the 2015 program, which assisted 54 Chicago-area companies, according to a CED news release.

“Exporting enables companies to reach new customers, but the process of selling to foreign markets can be difficult to navigate,” Metro Chicago Exports Managing Director Thomas Hulseman said in the news release.

Celebrating Mother’s Day One of my favorite memories of Mother’s Day as a child was my father cooking mom breakfast and serving it to her in bed. There wasn’t any burnt toast or bowls of cereal – my dad was an excellent cook.

All five of us would crowd around him excitedly as he served mom breakfast on a tray. She probably appreciated not having to get up early as much as the eggs, bacon and toast she ate in bed with five beaming faces watching to make sure she savored every bite.

As a mom, some of my favorite gifts from my two boys have been the homemade ones. Outlines of little handprints on school paper proclaiming I’m the best mom in the world. A heart cut from paper, colored in with yellow crayon, my chubby cheeked son’s cute face glued to it.

I still keep some of those Mother’s Day gifts hanging on the side of our kitchen pantry, just to remind me how much they meant to me. Others I have tucked away in drawers, books or cabinets, and love coming across them from time to time to warm my heart.

I think Mother’s Day is as much for the kids as it is for moms. It’s not only a way for kids to celebrate their mom, but they get so excited about what they plan to do.

I spoke with a group of 4- to 6-year-olds last week, asking what Mother’s Day meant to them and what they planned to do.

Jake Kaphusman was making a CD for his mom of “all her favorite songs,” and he was planning to do it all by himself. Because “she’s sweet,” he said.

Evan Orazco said the day was about “loving my mother.” He planned to make her breakfast and give her “gems.”

Joey Zielinski intended to help his mom whenever she asks.

Kenny and Bella Gleason agreed their mom is awesome. One caveat,

Keane Carder said he will give his mom a present and kiss her. He added – several times – he will give her more kisses, presents, hugs and love.

Bella Stahelin said to her, mom means “toys and reading her books.”

Zoey Meachum wasn’t specific, but said Mom will get a present.

Jabari Moore is making his mom a flower out of Legos. “I love my mom a lot,” he said. “If my room is messy, she cleans it for me. When I’m hurt, she helps me.”

Older kids have a bit more to say on the subject of what Mother’s Day is about.

Lindsey Warren is writing a biography about her mom at Troy Hofer Elementary School, and making a Shrinky Dink key chain and homemade body lotion that will make her skin soft.

“I’m celebrating my mom for being so nice to me,” Lindsey said.

Ava Rosales said Mother’s Day is about “coming together with mothers and celebrating what they have done for us and all the times they have helped you.”

In her class at Walnut Trails Elementary School, students were making flowers out of paper and giant cards to celebrate their moms.

“She drives me places. When I first learned how to ride [a bike] without training wheels she helped me,” Ava said. “She’s a good mom.”

conjunction with the annual Route 66 “Red Carpet Corridor” event in Elwood and Wilmington.

Lifelong Manhattan resident, Avon rep liked people

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com MANHATTAN – She was a good conversationalist and a people person.

Marion Edmonson of Iowa feels those qualities are why her mother, Margaret Flatt of Manhattan, was a successful Avon representative until the age of 93.

“Her sales kept getting bigger and she kept winning awards,” Marion said.

Margaret began her career at age 50 and was the only Avon representative for Manhattan, Marion said. She called on customers in person for several hours in the morning and then again in the afternoon, taking a break midday to catch her favorite soap opera, “As the World Turns.”

“She liked visiting with people as well,” Marion said. “If she didn’t get to someone, they called her.”

Margaret gave up her driver’s license at age 92, but she continued selling Avon for another year. Marion said her mother’s customers were so loyal to her, they offered to pick up their orders at Margaret’s house.

Even the UPS man helped out.

“He’d bring the boxes inside and set them on her washer and dryer so she could open them and check her invento-

ry,” Marion said.

Born and raised in Manhattan, the middle of three children, Margaret belonged to only one church her entire life: Manhattan United Methodist Church.

She shared various memories of that time with her family on folded pages tucked inside an unwritten journal.

“She didn’t want to mess up the pages in case she made a mistake,” Marion said.

Margaret’s other favorite memories included stopping at the former Riley’s Gas Station with a friend to buy penny candy before school, driving into Joliet with her father to sell her mother’s homemade pies and her father scattering popcorn over the dining room table so everyone could enjoy it together.

Margaret received two simple gifts for Christmas: an apple and an orange.

Her first job was at Woolworth’s in Joliet, Marion said, where Margaret worked from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. each Saturday. She enjoyed fast music for the Chicago Hop at the former Dellwood Park Dance Hall in Lockport.

“Her parents taught her to be kind to people, and be polite and don’t talk back,” Marion said.

“Mother showed me a picture of billy goats standing on top of old cars,” Marion said, “and when she put her wash out to dry, she kept a careful eye on the goats so they wouldn’t pull the laundry off the clothesline.”

Margaret loved to improvise in the kitchen and found ways to make simple foods special, especially Jell-O, Marion said. She used less water for increased

flavor and then added grated carrots and chopped celery (lime Jell-O) or just grated carrots (orange Jell-O).

She also made Starlight Mint cookies and a vanilla gelatin dessert topped with meringue and called it “floating island.”

Each week until her husband, Marvin Flatt, died in 1991, she made cinnamon coffeecakes with a sour cream drizzle.

“I have some of her handwritten recipes,” Marion said. “It’s nice to look back on them.”

After Margaret retired from Avon, she made petit point crosses and paired handwritten messages with socks for Operation Care Package, Marion said.

“She would do that every evening,” Marion said, “and mentioned ‘what a lifesaver’ that was to keep her awake until 10 o’clock.”

In her last year of life – Margaret died Dec. 5, 2015, missing her 102nd birthday by 21 days – she lived at Sunny Hill Nursing Home in Joliet, but she rarely stayed in her room.

“She wanted to be out where the hustle and bustle was,” Marion said.

Marie Ardaugh Lapicki, age 55, formerly of Joliet, passed away on April 2, 2016, at her home in Montana.

Marie was born in Joliet on Sept. 27, 1960. She attended St. Bernard Grade School and Joliet Township High Schools, moved to Morris after marriage to Joseph Lapicki in 1986, and then moved to Montana in 2001. Marie mourned Joseph’s passing on Jan. 15, 2016.

She is survived by her children, Mariette (Rob-

ert Vicich), Dylan (Kimber Harris) and Andrew (Caitlin Klaboe) Lapicki; grandchildren; and one brother-in-law, Andrew (Cynthia) Lapicki also survive. Marie will be deeply missed also by her loving parents, Leonard “Pat” and Sandra Ardaugh; sister, Loretta Ardaugh; and brother, Roy (Lorna) Ardaugh. She was part of a loving extended family of a niece, nephews, aunts, uncles and many cousins with whom she spent time while in Joliet for Joseph’s memorial on March 19, 2016.

Preceded in death by loving Ardaugh and Santerelli grandparents and godparents, Marialice Horn and Leo Ardaugh who along with Joseph have welcomed her home.

A memorial Mass for Marie Ardaugh Lapicki will be held Saturday, June 11, 2016, at 10 a.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 901 Elizabeth St., Joliet. Family will receive all friends and relatives from 9:30 a.m. until time of Mass. Inurnment will follow at St. Mary Nativity Cemetery.

STATE Lawmakers seek to limit phone-tracking technology

By IVAN MORENO The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Law enforcement departments’ powerful devices that mimic cell towers and track phone locations are raising privacy concerns and inspiring legislation to restrict how police can use the technology in criminal investigations.

Illinois is among states around the country trying to set rules for the suitcase-sized cell-site simulators, also known as Stingrays, which have the capabil- Sen. Daniel ity to capture data for Biss hundreds or thousands of cellphones in a particular neighborhood – not just the cellphone police are after.

“It’s a pretty unusual technology because it’s highly powerful but not very targeted,” said Sen. Daniel Biss, a suburban Chicago Democrat sponsoring legislation to require that law enforcement get search warrants before using the device. The bill cleared the Senate last month with unanimous support,

and it passed its first House committee Tuesday.

The bill also would require police to delete data from people who are not subject to an investigation within three days and prohibit police from using data to investigate individuals who were not included in a search warrant.

The Chicago Police Department, which is being sued to release records about how it uses this technology, did not take a position on the bill. The Illinois State Police are neutral. Last year, the federal Justice DepartRep. Ann ment set guidelines for Williams its agencies on how to use Stingrays, including requiring search warrants except in emergencies and deleting data every month.

“We’re just looking to say Illinois law enforcement agencies must comply with the same basic constitutional protections that the federal government needs to comply with when utilizing this powerful technology, which has the ability to monitor citizens en masse,” said Rep. ROUNDUP Man charged in Alton bombing reportedly angry over drug deal

ALTON – Authorities said an Illinois man charged with triggering two small bombs in his van was angry over a botched drug deal.

Richard Lee Johnson of Bethalto is suspected of setting off the homemade pipe bombs in Alton in late April, authorities said.

Federal court documents reviewed by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch indicate that the 27-year-old Johnson allegedly threatened to blow up a woman’s home after she took $50 from him in exchange for pills she failed to provide.

The woman said she later saw Johnson outside her home igniting an explosive device as a warning.

Chicagoan at kitchen table dies after bullet pierces door

CHICAGO – Chicago police said a man sitting at his kitchen table was killed when a bullet pierced his front door and struck him in the head.

Fifty-eight-year-old Andres Rivera was pronounced dead about a half hour after he was shot at 8 p.m. Saturday on the city’s southwest side.

Police don’t believe Rivera was the intended target.

Stretch of highway named for deputy killed in crash

SPRINGFIELD – A stretch of central Illinois highway will be designated as a memorial to a Tazewell County deputy who was killed in a traffic accident last year while responding to a domestic call.

Tazewell County sheriff’s Deputy Craig Whisenand was honored Thursday as part of an event in Springfield. A sheriff’s official said the designation of a stretch of Illinois Route 9 as Deputy Craig Whisenand Memorial Highway was approved Wednesday by the General Assembly, the Pekin Daily Times reported.

Whisenand, 44, was responding to a domestic disturbance call in August when his vehicle went off the road. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

“It’s nice to know that you aren’t alone and you have the support and love of the law enforcement community around you,” she added.

McHenry County sheriff’s Deputy Dwight Maness also was honored. He died in September, nearly a year after he was shot while responding to a domestic violence call.

In Springfield, among the families of fallen officers was Jack Bauer, whose nephew, Wyoming Police Chief William Bauer, died in 2010 in a crash.

The annual ceremony, Bauer said, helps with lasting grief.

“You can’t bottle it up,” Bauer said. “You have to get out and get it out of your system and

get with other people like this.”

Belleville Vietnam memorial is teen’s Eagle Scout project

BELLEVILLE – A Belleville East High School Boy Scout could see his project to create a local Vietnam veterans memorial dedicated by month’s end.

Neil Wegrzyn is a 17-year-old junior who has taken up the challenge as an Eagle Scout project.

The Belleville News-Democrat reported that Wegrzyn has gathered information on 15 men from the Belleville area killed in the Vietnam War. He raised $4,500 for a black granite monument on which their names will be engraved. It will be placed in Walnut Hill Cemetery.

The idea came to him during an eighth-grade trip to Washington, D.C., where he saw the Vietnam Memorial. His will be a miniature of the one in the capital.

Wegrzyn hopes to have a ceremony on Memorial Day.

Trump-Clinton matchup a ‘nightmare’ for some in GOP

First, she spoke about Donald Trump’s suggestion that he may violate party orthodoxy and back a minimum wage increase. Then, she addressed his tendency to take different sides of the same issue. Then, the image he projects to the world.

“I’m certainly a ‘Never Hillary’ person, but I may also be a ‘Never Trump’ person,” said Sorensen, 42, a homemaker who spends countless hours volunteering for the GOP. “It’s a nightmare. I’m living in a nightmare.”

Voters in this slice of deeply conservative Utah are experiencing an acute version of the political panic attack that’s gripped much of the GOP since Trump’s remaining rivals dropped out last week.

Utah County, 30 miles south of Salt Lake City, was never going to support Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton. It’s home to Brigham

Young University, and 2012 GOP nominee Mitt Romney won 88 percent of its voters against President Barack Obama. But it’s also the conservative heart of Utah, whose voters were among the most resistant to Trump in the nominating contest.

The billionaire won only 14 percent of the votes at the Republican caucuses in March. Trump’s boastful, populist approach offends many in a deeply religious state that values humility, personal ethics and traditional conservative values.

“What’s more important to us is the life led, the character of the candidate for office,” said Robert Craig, 55, a businessman and another member of the Utah County party’s executive committee.

The way Utah’s Republicans grapple with Trump’s nomination may say a lot about his viability in November. No presidential nominee in recent decades has won the White House without overwhelming support from voters of his own party – typically 90 percent of them or more – but the GOP is badly splintered over Trump.

U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., set off a firestorm last week when he

said Trump had not yet earned his endorsement. The last two GOP presidents – George W. Bush and George H.W. Bush – said they wouldn’t attend the party’s July convention, where Trump awaits the nomination.

Some Utah Republicans are grudgingly lining up behind Trump. U.S. Rep. Chris Stewart, who called Trump “our Mussolini” in March, now calls for party unity.

“While Mr. Trump wasn’t my first choice, we must move forward and unite to defeat Hillary Clinton,” he said.

K.C. Bezant contemplated what to do as he hurried back from his lunch break to the furniture store in the University Mall where he works.

“Not a big fan,” he said of Trump. Bezant voted for Texas Sen. Ted Cruz in the caucuses. Another salesman, David Bauer, 69, met Bezant as he walked in.

“Are you going to vote for Trump?” Bezant asked Bauer, who also had supported Cruz in the caucuses.

“Yeah,” Bauer answered.

“I don’t like Hillary. I’ll vote for him. Not voting is just putting another vote in Hillary’s back pocket.”

“Yeah,” Bezant said. “I’ll do it.”

Once unthinkable, drug shoot-up rooms weighed DAVID KLEPPER The Associated Press Across the United States, heroin and other drug users have died in alleys behind convenience stores, on city sidewalks and in the bathrooms of fast-food joints – because no one was around to save them when they overdosed.

An alarming 47,000 American overdose deaths in 2014 has pushed elected leaders from coast to coast to consider government-sanctioned sites where heroin users can shoot up under the supervision of a doctor or nurse who can administer an antidote if necessary.

“Things are getting out of control.

We have to find things we can do for people who are addicted now,” said New York state Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal, who is working on legislation to allow supervised injection sites that would also include space for treatment services. “The idea shouldn’t be dismissed out of hand.”

Critics of the war on drugs have long talked about the need for a new approach to addiction, but the idea for supervised injection sites is now coming from state lawmakers in New York, Maryland and California, and city officials in Seattle, San Francisco and Ithaca, New York.

While such sites have operated for years in places such as Canada, the Netherlands and Australia, they face legal and political challenges in the U.S. “It’s a dangerous idea,” said John Walters, drug czar under President George W. Bush. “It’s advocated by people who seem to think that the way we should help sick people is by keeping

them sick, but comfortably sick.”

At Sydney’s Medically Supervised Injecting Centre, more than 5,900 people have overdosed since it opened in 2001.

No one has died. It’s the same at Insite in Vancouver, British Columbia. About 20 overdoses happen there every week, but the facility has yet to record a death.

Sydney’s facility is tucked between

a hostel and a Chinese restaurant in the red-light district. Up to 16 users can shoot up in the injection room, which resembles a doctor’s office. Staffers are not allowed to administer drugs, although clean needles are provided.

After users get their fix, clients head to a second room with a warmer feel.

Colored Christmas lights hang from the ceiling; books and magazines line the shelves. Clients can relax with coffee or tea or talk to staff. Some stay for 15 minutes; others spend hours. They leave through a back door to protect their privacy.

An Amsterdam clinic – one of three in the Dutch capital – goes even further, distributing free, government-paid heroin to long-term addicts so they don’t have to commit a crime to pay for their fix.

In Vancouver, Insite offers patients treatment services just up the stairs from where they shoot up.

Rhea Jean spoke to the AP after recently injecting herself there. She felt nauseous and ran outside to the curb to vomit. Her face covered with scabs, the longtime heroin user looks far older than her 33 years.

“It’s a great place for active users in full-blown addiction. It links you up to other programs,” Jean said.

Lockport badminton coach Hadley retiring after one more state appearance

By KAITLYN JASNICA kjasnica@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – When girls badminton coach Denise Hadley started her career at Lockport, she might not have envisioned what it would become.

So far in 32 years, she has led Lockport to one state championship, two third-place finishes, one singles championship, one doubles championship, 21 state appearances and 17 sectional titles.

At the end of the year, the veteran coach and teacher will retire, but her

team already is making it a memorable final season.

Last Thursday, Hadley watched her two singles players and two doubles teams battle in the sectional finals, and all six of her players will be at state for the last time this weekend.

So what does it take to build such a successful program?

“If you work hard with the kids and teach them the game, you get the support like we did from the Lockport administration, and you get those athletes out, you can compete with anybody,”

Hadley said. “Now it’s just the icing on the cake.

“Sectionals are hard because if you don’t play well, you’re not going to make it. Will we win state as a team? Probably not, but as long as we play hard and have fun, it’ll be a great experience.”

When Hadley started her education career 33 years ago, she coached volleyball under Julie Hudson. She learned how to demand things from her athletes without pushing them too far, and she brought that attitude to badminton.

That resulted in big things for the

program.

In 1988, Hadley’s first medalist, Jenny Ebenroth, finished second in the state, and in ’89, she finished third. In 1990, Tammy Bartley and Kerri Rak became Lockport’s’ first state champion doubles team, and the Porters got third in the state overall. Five years later, in 1995, Lockport won its state title, and the following year, they took third and Adrienne Davis won the singles title.

The year after that, Davis took second.

Continued from page 16 “The kids bought into it, the parents bought into it,” Hadley said. “You demand things, and you work hard and get them on board with what you’re trying to teach them while having fun, and that’s what I’ve done for the 32 years. It’s seemed to work. The parents are very supportive, and they come back and love it.”

Andrew High School badminton coach Terry TerHaar – who won six state titles – also was a big influence for Hadley. TerHaar taught Hadley about coaching, and like every coach in the SouthWest Suburban Conference, they had a friendly but competitive relationship.

Having that relationship with TerHaar might be the reason why Hadley remembered one of his singles players: Jill Albright.

Years after she played for TerHaar, Albright came to Lockport to look for a position as a coach, and she’s still coaching for the Porters 13 years later.

“I was able to come in under coach Hadley, who’s been here for 32 years, and I really think it is a privilege,” Albright said. “I was with Andrew High School and was a part of their state championship team in ’94. My senior year, I played singles, and it was that year in ’95 that Lockport won. When I got back in touch with Hadley, she remembered me from

It was amazing to have that type of memory.

“It’s been an honor to work underneath her and learn from her and see how committed and dedicated she’s been to this school, and what it takes to run such a phenomenal program year after year. I think that’s what I have to say about Lockport badminton; it represents the hard work that the head coach has put into it.”

Albright coaches at the sophomore level but also plays a role in coaching singles players throughout the program, while Hadley focuses on doubles partners.

Hadley and Albright are dedicated to coaching athletic players who are driven to get better. They also teach the players good technique so they can play either singles or doubles. Once they decide which game fits each player’s skills the most, both coaches do everything to make sure that everyone plays to their highest potential.

Since they had success together as a coaching pair, originally, they planned to leave together. Now, there’s a possibility Albright might take the reins from her mentor.

“I would love to be able to stay with Lockport,” Albright said. “At first I

“We fight in every single match and fight for every single point,” Mindiyarova said. “I believe in my doubles partner, and I believe in all of us. Dora is like my sister. It’s unbelievable since I’ve never played with someone who I just know every single thing.

We’re so synchronized.

“We get along with each other very well and we support each other. That’s the great thing, and that’s what our team is all about. It’s going to be very exciting because we know that both teams are very difficult and are rivals.

So it’s going to be do or die for us.” thought that it might be best to leave with her, and that was our initial intention, but there is a physical education position open at the school for the upcoming year.

If I am able to get hired here, I would love to continue to work within the Lockport badminton program. I have my interest letter in for continuing to be a part of the program and possibly coaching varsity.

I have a lot of support from the family and teachers and friends of the players, so I’m hoping that can continue. As far as my future plans, if I can continue at Lockport, I would absolutely love to.

“It’s become a community for me. It’s become a home. I just feel very passionate about it. Even as we’re talking about it now, I just can’t help thinking about all the different players and different people that I’ve met here at the school and how incredible it is to be in education.

“I want to take the program and continue the legacy that Hadley has with it, and because I’ve been with the program for so many years, I think I can do that.”

What a legacy it has been.

Even though it will be hard for Hadley to leave it behind, she plans to help coaches throughout the area with their programs. With her passion for the sport, it would be nearly impossible for her to completely leave the sport, but she’ll always remember her career with Lockport.

“I have great kids. They love badminton, and it’s been a great career,” Hadley said.

ROMEOVILLE – Lewis University’s women’s tennis team is just one win away from pulling off a special accomplishment for the third time in five years.

With a victory in Monday’s NCAA Division II Midwest Region #2 finals, the Flyers will again advance to the Round of 16, which will be from May 18-21 in Denver.

On Sunday, Lewis advanced to its fourth Midwest Region finals in five years after capturing a 5-2 victory over Davis & Elkins College at the Jack Oremus Tennis Complex.

Coach Brett Bridel’s Flyers (19-4), who’ve won 13 straight matches, will meet Indianapolis at 10 a.m. Monday at the Five Star Tennis Center in Plainfield for the championship.

UIndy beat Tiffin, 5-1, in Sunday’s other regional match. The Flyers won, 5-1, over the Greyhounds (14-7) when the Great Lakes Valley Conference squads met one month ago at the same site as Monday’s matchup.

tition against the Senators (14-12) and then won three of the first four singles matches to wrap up the victory.

“The whole season we’ve been really focused on just trying to improve each and every match, and I feel like we’ve done that since we’ve come a long way from when we started playing our first dual matches in February,” Bridel said. “We’re going to have a tough task tomorrow since we’ve played both already and know how good they are and the effort that it will take to get by them.

“If we can do that and make it to the Sweet 16, that would be a dream come true for our seniors, who’ve put in so much time, effort and work for us. So if we can get that done for them, it would just be icing on the cake. They obviously have to be able to work hard, but the other big thing is how they play for each other. The great thing about college tennis is that it’s all about the team and that you need other people to win for the team to win.”

JJC beats Rock Valley, earns regional berth SUBMITTED REPORTS

JOLIET – The Joliet Junior College baseball team needed the “if” game, but the Wolves did indeed secure the Regional IV Division III Sectional Tournament title Sunday afternoon with a 15-3 victory over Rock Valley at Wayne L. King Jr. Field.

Rock Valley won Sunday’s opener over JJC, 3-2, leaving both teams with one loss in the double-elimination event. JJC used the bunt effectively and totaled 19 hits in Game 2 as the Wolves punched their ticket to next weekend’s best-of-three regional against Waubonsee. JJC (32-28) will be home Friday and Sunday and the visitor Saturday.

The Wolves scored twice in the first inning of the second game and added three in the second, five in the third, three in the fifth and two in the seventh. They got bunt singles from Sam Muszynski (Plainfield South), Jermaine Terry (Plainfield South) and Jeff Szubert in the second inning, and the five-run third opened with a bunt single by Davis Purviance (Lockport).

Terry, Szubert, Jake Drada and Thomas Smith (Lockport) had three hits. Steve Wittkamp (Minooka), Purviance and Eric Horbach added two.

Drada drove in four runs and Szubert and Wittkamp knocked in two each.

Winner Nick Evola (Morris) went six innings and allowed two runs.

Thomas Jeffries (Providence) pitched two innings and Matt Taller (Plainfield South) worked the final inning.

In Game 1, Rock Valley scored two unearned runs in the third inning against tough-luck loser Brennan Polcyn (Minooka) and added a run in the fifth for a 3-0 lead. JJC scored single runs in the fifth on Glenn Kubek’s RBI fielder’s choice and in the sixth on Wittkamp’s single. Smith finished with two hits. MEN’S TRACK USF second in CCAC Outdoors: St.

Francis finished second in the CCAC Outdoor Championships at Joliet Memorial Stadium, scoring 176.5 points to 218 for champion Olivet Nazarene.

St. Ambrose placed third at the nineteam meet with 124 points. Eighteen Saints earned All-CCAC honors by placing among the top three in their individual or relay events. Three individuals and one relay team were conference champs.

Brandon Ruffi won the 110-meter hurdles with a CCAC record time of 15.17 seconds and won the high jump (1.93 m) and was second in the triple jump (13.87 m). He joined John Principato (Plainfield Central), Michael Giovannelli and Tevin Hopkins (Minooka) on USF’s 4 x 400 relay, which won in a CCAC record 3:17.08. He also ran a leg of the Saints’ third-place 4 x 100 relay (42.70) with Hopkins, Jordan Duncan and Donte Cobb. Giovannelli also earned All-CCAC status with a third in the 400 (48.24).

Cam Knudsen (Minooka) led the 5,000 with a conference record 14:55.49 and was followed by Joey Santillo (Minooka) and Brian Blaylock with 15:02.08 and 15:04.83. Kyle Mitchell (Plainfield Central) earned All-CCAC honors in three field events as he was second in the shot (15.94 m) and discus (50.39) and third in the hammer throw (45.65 m). Miseal Tobias (Plainfield South) was second in the 800 and 1,500 (1:56.18, 3:55.43). Mateo Hernandez and Stephen Wilder (Plainfied North) finished second (32:43.64) and third (33:13.83) in the 10,000.

Lewis wins GLVC: At Liberty, Missouri, Sergio Miranda (Romeoville) won two events to help Lewis win the GLVC Outdoor Championship, hosted

by William Jewell. Miranda won the 800 (1:51.04, NCAA Provisional) and 1,500 (3:54.34). Matt Jemilo was second in the 800 (1:51.46, NCAA Provisional).

Andre Barnes broke the GLVC record in the 400 (46.91, NCAA Provisional ). Lewis’ 4 x 100 relay of Barnes, Isaac Jean-Paul, Devin Ingram (Minooka) and Brock Robertsen finished second in 41.75. Robertsen was second in the 400 hurdles (54.96). Robertsen, Jemilo, Miranda and Barnes ran a GLVC record 4 x 400 relay (3:13.01).

WOMEN’S TRACK USF second in CCAC Outdoors: St.

Francis finished second in the meet at Joliet Memorial Stadium. The Saints had 193.5 points to 230.5 for Olivet Nazarene. St. Ambrose finished third at the nine-team event with 134.

Nine Saints earned All-CCAC status by placing among the top three. Four of the nine individuals and two relay teams claimed league titles.

Jenna Moody (Plainfield Central) was recognized for the second straight season as the CCAC Women’s Track Athlete of the Year. She won the 100, 200 and 400 with times of 12.26, 24.76 and 54.99, the latter two conference records. Moody also ran a leg of two CCAC record-setting relays, joining senior Daryll Rodriguez, Isi Edeko and LaToyah Mason on the 4 x 100 (48.20) and 4 x 400 (3:56.80). Ashlee Knott and Lesley Lopez also set CCAC records, Knott in the 1,500 (4:37.77) and Lopez in the 800 (2:15.05).

Edeko won the long jump (5.63 m) and triple jump (11.70 m). Raven Kelly

(Romeoville) was All-CCAC in two field events, finishing second in the shot (13.31 m) and hammer throw (51.94 m).

Amber Cook won the high jump (5-51/4). Chantel Stennis (Bolingbrook) took the 200 (23.89, NCAA Provisional) and 400 (54.45). Stennis was named the GLVC Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year. Cook was the GLVC Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year.

Freshman Cierra Pulliam (Romeoville) won the 100 (12.05). Cook, Stennis and Pulliam joined Phoenix Smallwood for second in the 4 x 100 relay (46.82, NCAA Provisional). Pulliam was named GLVC Freshman of the Year. Smallwood defended her 2015 long jump title (19-21/2). Cook was second. Zoe Mead broke her own GLVC record in the 800 (2:10.46, NCAA Provisional). Quintana leads White Sox over Twins for 4th series sweep

By MIKE CRANSTON The Associated press CHICAGO – The White Sox are playing so well, they scored a run in the seventh inning while striking out four times.

Jose Quintana pitched seven innings of one-run ball and Austin Jackson hit a go-ahead double in the fifth inning of a 3-1 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Sunday that completed the Sox fourth series sweep this season.

“I’ve been on teams before when you come to the ballpark and you’re like, ‘I’m seeing your face again’ and the same old stuff,” said Todd Frazier, one of the Sox key offseason acquisitions. “This is fun to see. Guys are making great plays out there, timely hitting and pitching is doing their job.”

Quintana (5-1) gave up six hits,

struck out five and lowered his ERA to 1.38. David Robertson pitched a hitless ninth for his 10th save in 11 tries as the Sox (22-10) completed a three-game sweep and moved 12 games above .500 for the first time since September 2012.

“You couldn’t really ask for a better start,” Frazier said.

Tyler Duffey became the first Twins pitcher in nearly four years to strike out four batters in an inning, but Avisail Garcia reached on a wild pitch during the seventh and scored on Dioner Navarro’s double for the game’s final run.

Duffey (0-2) struck out a career-best nine, while allowing six hits in seven innings. Minnesota has lost five straight games and nine of 10.

Eddie Rosario singled in the third and scored on Jorge Polanco’s groundout for the Twins (8-23), who are 0-6

against the Sox and dropped 131/2 games behind AL Central-leading Chicago.

“Bad outcome to wrap up kind of a tough trip for us in a lot of ways,” Twins manager Paul Molitor said.

“We’re at the point that we are looking for some encouraging points to what we’re doing. For Duff to step up today and give us seven innings, it was solid and certainly gave a lot of guys a little relief in the bullpen.”

Quintana got out of a jam in the first, when he trouble locating his curveball, and settled down for his 11th quality start in 12 outings.

“I started a little slow,” Quintana said. “After that I felt better with my command.”

Duffey also struck out Brett Lawrie, Jackson and Jimmy Rollins in the seventh. The previous Minnesota pitcher to strike out four in an inning was Francisco Liriano at Kansas City on June 5, 2012.

CHICAGO – Bryce Harper was drawing walks at such a ridiculous rate he wound up tying a major league record.

That’s because the Cubs gave the Nationals star little to hit.

The Cubs walked Harper a record-tying six times, then beat Washington 4-3 Sunday when Javier Baez homered in the 13th inning for a four-game sweep.

Washington’s Tanner Roark, a 2004 Wilmington High School graduate, gave up one run and four hits in six innings. Roark did not factor in the decision.

The Cubs won their seventh in a row and improved the best record in the majors to 24-6. Washington, which had been leading the NL East, lost its fourth straight.

“They had a plan. They had a plan, and unfortunately it worked,” Harper said.

While Cubs manager Joe Maddon insisted the walks were more a product of the circumstances than a concerted effort to avoid him, the Cubs looked like a team that had little interest in giving Harper much to hit. The reigning NL MVP walked 13 times in this series.

“I know that he’s not as hot as he can be coming into this series, but you don’t want to get him hot,” Maddon said. “I’ve been part of that in the past.

Arrieta was in line for his first loss since last July 25 – when Philadephia’s Cole Hamels pitched a no-hitter at Wrigley Field – before the Cubs rallied for its 11th win in 12 games.

Arrieta’s ERA increased from 0.84 to 1.13 on a day when he struggled with his control. The right-hander lasted just five innings for the second time in three starts. Arrieta walked four, struck out seven and threw three wild pitches.

The Cubs are off to baseball’s best 30-game start since the 1984 Detroit Tigers were 26-4.

By DAVE SKRETTA The Associated Press KANSAS CITY, Kan. – At the season-opening Daytona 500, Joe Gibbs Racing proved it was unquestionably the fastest, from Denny Hamlin taking the checkered flag to its quartet of cars leading more than three-quarters of the race.

It turned out to be a harbinger of things to come.

After watching Kyle Busch drive away from Kevin Harvick to win Saturday night’s Sprint Cup race at Kansas Speedway, Gibbs drivers have won six times in the first 11 races. Everybody on the team has a win except Matt Kenseth, and the former series champion finished a season-best fourth at Kansas.

“The hardest thing in pro sports is to stay up there every week and right now it’s been a thrill,” Gibbs said after celebrating Busch’s first Sprint Cup win at a track that’s caused him so much trouble.

“In a sport where we have so many great teams, so many great owners – it’s so competitive, it’s so hard to get on a hot streak,” Gibbs said. “I appreciate how nice it is to reel off several wins like this.”

Hahn beats Castro on 1st playoff hole

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – James Hahn beat Roberto Castro with a par on the first hole of a playoff Sunday in the Wells Fargo Championship to snap a three-month slump.

Hahn, who failed to make the cut in his previous eight tournaments and hadn’t shot a round in the 60s since February, made a 4-foot putt on the par-4 18th to win his second career PGA Tour title.

Castro’s tee shot on the playoff hole found the creek on the left side of the fairway and his third shot landed in a spectator’s shoe on the side of the green, leading to a bogey. Hahn bogeyed the 18th in regulation for a 2-under 70, and Castro had a 71 to finish at 9 under, one shot ahead of Justin Rose (71). Hahn also won the 2015 Northern Trust Open at Riviera.

Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson both shot 66 to tie for fourth at 7 under with third-round leader Rickie Fowler (74) and Andrew Loupe (71). Both Castro and Hahn had chances to win in regulation. Castro broke a tie when he birdied a putt from 6 feet on the 15th hole to get to 11 under. But he quickly gave the lead up with bogeys at 16 and 17 on the “Green Mile,” one of the toughest closing holes on the PGA Tour.

Don’t trust immunity boosters Dear Dr. K: I guess everyone wants a strong immune system. But is there anything to the claims of products that advertise that they boost immunity?

Dear Reader: In a word, no. Our immune system does a remarkable job of protecting us from bacteria, viruses and other microbes. That’s good, because they can cause disease, suffering, even death. It seems logical to want to give your immune system a boost.

The problem is “boosting your immune system” is a simplistic concept. In reality, our immune system is incredibly complex, composed of many different types of cells that make many different types of chemicals. To function well, the immune system requires balance and harmony. Think of it as an army: The actions of the soldiers need to be coordinated by the generals, who determine when and where to attack, as well as when to stop attacking.

You can’t “boost” all parts of the immune system at once, and you probably don’t want to. An overactive immune system is seen in major autoimmune diseases, such as Type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis and lupus.

In autoimmune diseases, overactive parts of the immune system start attacking the body instead of defending it. Allergies are another example of an immune system that’s overactive. A little harmless pollen gets into your nose, for example, and the immune system overreacts. And you start sneezing and getting a runny nose that won’t quit.

There still is much researchers don’t know about the workings and interconnectedness of the immune response. We’ve got to understand how the immune system works better than we currently do to achieve the goal of boosting just the right

As for the many food products and packaged drinks that are labeled as “supporting immunity,” “boosting immunity” or providing a “defense” against germs? Rubbish!

Most of these products just contain vitamins and minerals people already get as part of a normal, healthy diet. Some of them have been shown to boost one small part of the immune system, in a laboratory dish. That’s not proof they will help you fight off infections any better.

My colleague Dr. Michael Starnbach, a professor of microbiology and medical genetics at Harvard Medical School, feels strongly that when it comes to products that claim to boost immunity, there’s no truth in advertising. As he says, there’s simply no evidence consuming these products will translate into better immune function. And without that evidence, the packaging claims are just a marketing ploy. Eating or drinking those “immune boosting” foods won’t help you and may lead you to consume more calories than you need.

It’s not silly to want to find a way to help the immune system do a better job of defending us from foreign microbes, and I hope research can teach us how to do this.

However, we just don’t have enough information yet to make this a reality.

boyfriend of 5½ years died unexpectedly. Like so many other Americans, he didn’t have life insurance or any money to cover his funeral. For the last 2½ years I provided the primary financial support when he came and lived with me.

His mother made the decisions about the casket and service. She asked that money instead of flowers be given to help pay for the cost of the funeral. About $4,000 still is owed. She now says the remaining cost should be divided between her, her ex-husband and me.

I don’t think I should be obligated to assume a third of the funeral costs. If I had been married to him, the situation would be different. I have friends and family who agree with me and others who don’t. If I tell his mother it isn’t my responsibility to pay, she and other family members may never speak to me again. What is your response to this scenario? – Who Is Responsible?

Dear Who: This may seem negative, but of this I am positive: Even if you do pay a third of the funeral expenses, those people may turn away from you anyway. So do as your conscience dictates and nobody else.

Dear Abby: It has been more than 30 years since I knew the whereabouts of my brother, my only sibling. Over the years, I have searched for him off and on, especially when there were major life events. Both of our parents have died, with my mother cursing him at the end. My family believed he was probably dead since no one had heard from him, even to ask for money.

Yesterday, I Googled his name, and to my surprise his mug shot popped up. It appears he has been incarcerated for most of the 30 years and has a rap sheet a mile long. Nothing violent, just stealing. I am saddened to have seen his photo this way and wonder why he never reached out to me. He has been alone, a criminal, for most of his life with no one to love or care about him.

My husband says don’t contact him, and I probably shouldn’t. I’d just like him to know I have missed him and I am sad his life turned out this way. Am I a fool to want to know this hardened criminal? The defenders, during the war at the bridge table, must signal and hope that each will be interpreted correctly.

This deal came from a reader who requested anonymity. First, what should North rebid over partner’s one spade? Second, how should the defenders play assuming South is in four spades, and West leads the diamond ace?

In the bidding, first, I agree with North’s responding one diamond, not one heart. His hand has good potential for a diamond contract, and South can easily show a fourcard major. Second, I think North should rebid four spades. It is a slight overbid, but it pays to push for game.

(If you employ splinter bids, North should not rebid four clubs, because he has far too many red-suit losers.)

With four trumps, you rarely look for a ruff. But here, after East signaled with the diamond two at trick one, West shifted to his singleton heart. (Yes, a club switch would have been best, but that was nearly impossible to find.) East won and carefully returned the heart five, his lowest heart being a suit-preference signal for clubs.

At the table, West ruffed and tried to cash the diamond king. South ruffed, drew trumps, and coasted home.

West erred. If East had started with a singleton diamond, he would have led his highest heart at trick three.
