develop village’s strategic plan

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Traffic congestion, coupled with a shortage of downtown parking and connectivity in town, were just a few of the concerns raised by the more than 60 Plainfield residents who came out to the village’s strategic planning session Wednesday night.

Several weighed in on Plainfield’s traffic woes, a slew of ongoing transportation projects, business and retail development and how the village intends to maintain and build upon its identity.

The meeting served as a discussion starter so Plainfield officials could gain insight into what residents want to see in the village 2016-2021 strategic plan.

Beth Downey, a Plainfield resident, said she wants to see better connectivity between the north and south end of town and a train station built. Downtown parking is also lacking, she said.

“I have a lot of friends who live on the south, work on the north [side of town], and it’s always a challenge,” Downey said.

“There’s also the general traffic. We need to alleviate that.”

“You take your life in your hands when you try to cross,” Sebby said during a workshop session held Wednesday night at Plainfield Central High School. “There’s no easy to get across safely. If kids are doing it anyway, we got to make it safe.”

The village is forming a new five-year strategic plan after having already completed the bulk of its original strategic plan, first adopted by the village in 2013, said Lewis Bender, a Michigan-based consultant who aided the village in the new plan.

“Your [village] staff has kicked butt.

That was a plan to do five year’s worth of work. If you noticed, we got it done in three,” Bender told the crowd at the start of the meeting.

Among the accomplishments complet-

ed are ramps at Route 30 and Interstate 55, traffic signals at Meadow Lane and Route 126, and Pace bus parking improvements.

Also, train delays and stoppages have dropped off since Plainfield pushed for the rail line Canadian National to move its hotbox wheel detector southeast from near Lockport Street to Renwick Road.

The detector previously caused sometimes hourlong delays along many of the 17 grade crossings.

But problems with CN remain. One resident, Vivian Hagar, expressed concern about the noise made from train horns in residential areas.

Even this morning, it was loud, she said, asking if the village can turn the area into a “quiet zone,” in which the rail line would be exempt from sounding the horns while approaching the crossing. That requires federal approval and crossing safety improvements.

Hagar also said she wants Plainfield to lower its taxes.

“I would like to see even more control, and not tax just because you can,” Hagar said.

Others voiced they want to see more retail stores to the west, better development of the Riverfront Park, additional pedestrian and bike trails, an established downtown parking deck, and improved roads.

Train station appears to be back on track

Joliet Economic Development Director Steve Jones said he will wait for the paperwork to arrive before he is certain, but it appears that the state will continue to employ the construction management contractor on the project.

because the state was considering pulling out.

On Tuesday, Jones told the council that the Illinois Department of Transportation is now doing the paperwork to extend the contract with T.Y. Lin International.

“Until I get that all on my desk, I’ll still have a little bit of anxiety,” Jones said later.

The state provided a $30 million grant for what was originally a $42 million project. Increased costs have put the project at $50 million, and the city has put on hold a bus station that was in the original plan.

had been jeopardized because of the state’s budget problems, Jones said.

Joliet would have to consider taking on the costs of a construction management contractor if the state pulled out. Now, if the state proceeds as expected, Jones said, construction on a train station and Heritage Corridor commuter platform should “get going by the end of spring so we have a full construction season.”

The train station is scheduled to be completed in 2017.

Jones said state officials on Friday are expected to sign off on a $16 million contract with Walsh Construction to build the station and commuter platform.

Joliet students to present program honoring Holocaust victims

JOLIET – The solemn tune of “Le Froid De L’Hiver,” which means “the cold of the winter,” filled the air Wednesday morning at Hufford Junior High School.

The music was the perfect accompaniment to the tone of the program the students were rehearsing – a program that honors and remembers the lives lost during the Holocaust of World War II, during which the Nazis systematically persecuted and murdered 6 million Jews.

“We must never forget the Holocaust and keep in mind that it could happen again. We do this program in remembrance of the lost generation of children who were killed,” teacher and director Jeannine Janicki said.

Over the past two months, eighthgrade Individualized Education students at Hufford Junior High have practiced for the annual Yom Hashoah Remembrance Day “Remember the Children” program, which is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday at Joliet Jewish Congregation and is open to the public.

Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Memorial Day) takes place each year on the 27th day of the Nisan in the Hebrew calendar. The date was selected and a resolution by Israel’s Parliament on April 12, 1951, with the official name “Holocaust and Heroism Remembrance Day” passed in 1953, according to jewishvirtuallibrary.org, which is a project of American-Israeli Cooperative Enterprise.

Janicki said the I.E. program likes to be involved in outreach to the Joliet community and more than 10 years ago, a Jewish teacher at Hufford decided to have the students perform in various mediums in order to honor the 6 million Jews killed in the Holocaust.

This year, 70 students in the I.E. program, by using their individual talents, will focus on honoring the 1.5 million Jewish children killed during the Holocaust.

“Some of what we do was my own scripted material, but students have also come forward and let a teacher know that they have something unique to offer to the program, that’s what I.E. is all about,” Janicki said.

Veterans weigh in on Joliet zoning vote

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A zoning variation for a house on Cagwin Street turned into a veterans issue this week.

The Joliet City Council in a split vote approved the variance allowing two units to stay in the house after hearing from several veterans who said the zoning was needed to provide housing for people in need who had served in the military.

But a couple of council members said support for veterans had nothing to do with the question. One even called the use of veterans to influence the vote “deplorable.”

Catherine Beavers, who operates a number of multifamily houses in Joliet for veterans in need of housing, said she had acquired the house at 7-9 Cagwin St. without knowing that it was not zoned for the two units already in it.

Veterans who live in other Beavers houses suggested that denying the zoning would be a vote against veterans.

“We have veterans like myself who are homeless,” Frederick Jones said. “[Beavers] fights for us every day.”

Councilwoman Jan Quillman, however, said she found the use of the veterans in the case for the zoning “deplorable.”

“I don’t know why you have to use veterans for this one house,” Quillman said. “I take great offense to that.”

Quillman noted that her husband is a Vietnam War veteran and that she herself serves as a nurse in the Honor Flight Network that flies World War II veterans to Washington, D.C. She said zoning is an issue in the St. Pat’s Neighborhood, where the house is located, because of the numbers of single-family homes that have been divided into multifamily dwellings.

Michael Turk Joliet City Council Carol Ann Heinemann, president of the St. Pat’s Neighborhood Association, also felt compelled to mention that her father and brothers are veterans as she explained her opposition to the zoning.

Among other things, Heinemann said, the residence has insufficient parking for two units.

Beavers said the veterans who live in her houses do not have cars. She also pointed to the shortage of housing for homeless veterans as a reason why they spoke out on the zoning matter.

“They feel a house where one of the veterans cannot live is a problem,” Beavers told the council. “There are limited houses for veterans.”

City officials acknowledged that some single-family houses have fallen through the regulatory cracks and are used for apartments without the appropriate zoning.

Quillman said the zoning problem for the house on Cagwin Street was at least partially the city’s fault and ended up voting for the two-unit zoning.

Others voting yes were Terry Morris, Bettye Gavin, Larry Hug, Jim McFarland and Mayor Bob O’Dekirk.

O’Dekirk, who typically only votes in ties, voted because a two-thirds majority was needed to override the Zoning Board of Appeals, which denied the zoning.

Voting no were Pat Mudron and Michael Turk.

“This is not a veterans issue,” Turk said. “It’s a zoning issue.”

Opponents slow down DriveTime plan ​By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – DriveTime has slowed down its plan to open one of its usedcar lots in Joliet.

The company has run into opposition from neighborhood groups questioning its lending practices. Rather than face a vote by the City Council on Tuesday, the company asked that the decision be tabled until June.

It’s the second time that two neighborhood groups have teamed together to try to block a multi-state, used-car business that specializes in selling to customers with credit problems.

They were successful in 2012 when CarHop tried but failed to open a used-car business on West Jefferson Street.

The council tabled the vote on DriveTime until June 7 after Mayor Bob O’Dekirk noted that the company wanted time to meet with the neighborhood groups that raised questions about DriveTime.

“I think there’s some confusion,” attorney Michael Martin, representing DriveTime, told the council at its Monday workshop meeting. “The allegation is we’re a predatory lender.

What we are is a subprime lender.”

Martin went on to say that DriveTime takes an interest in its customers and in the communities where it operates, detailing several causes supported by the DriveTime Foundation.

Interest rates on car loans range between 6 and 13 percent, he said.

“We keep the loans,” Martin said.

“We keep the loans. We have an interest in the people coming in to buy a car qualifying for the loan and being successful on the loan.”

The two groups opposing DriveTime are the Cathedral Area Preservation Association and the St. Pat’s Neighborhood Association. They also opposed the CarHop proposal.

DriveTime wants to move into the former Century Tile location at 1395 N. Larkin Ave. Century Tile closed in late summer when The Salvation Army was going to buy the property and open a store.

Salvation Army eventually backed out of the deal.

The two neighborhood groups also opposed DriveTime’s proposal at the April meeting of the Zoning Board of Appeals, which voted to deny the special-use permit. The City Council, however, has the final vote.

Councilman Larry Hug asked Tuesday that the council get some more information on why the ZBA voted against the permit before it considers the Drive Time proposal in June.

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Seven years after attacking his girlfriend with a knife in their Joliet home, a man was sentenced Wednesday to 12 years in prison.

“I’m sorry for Kim being hurt the way she was. No one deserves to be put through what she was,” Bradley M. Schlott, 48, told Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak.

Kimberly Hurschik and Schlott lived together for seven years in a west side Joliet home. But Hurschik

testified during the trial she’d been trying to end the relationship before March 12, 2009, when Schlott began punching her after she got out of the shower. When she tried to run out, he Bradley grabbed her by the hair, M. Schlott threw her to the ground and choked her before slicing her throat and cutting the side of her breast with a hunting knife.

Schlott called 911 and reported the stabbing and need for an ambulance but

hung up when the dispatcher asked for his name. Hurschik then told Schlott to get rid of the knife and called 911 herself. Schlott’s attorneys said his behavior was a side effect of anti-depression medication he’d recently begun taking.

Schlott was found guilty of attempted murder earlier this year.

“There was evidence of planning with the letters [Schlott wrote to Hurschik’s family and friends] and the words used in them,” Bertani-Tomczak said.

The judge said Schlott’s sentence had to account for “not just the physi-

cal injuries [but] the aftermath ... the psychological injuries, the change in someone’s life course.”

Hurschik said in a statement presented in court that she thinks about the attack every day and never feels safe.

Schlott served four and a half years in jail following his arrest, but was released when prosecutors appealed to be allowed to use his unsent letters at trial.

Schlott will have to serve at least 85 percent of his prison sentence and should be eligible for parole in 2022.

Sex offender gets 9 years in prison for meeting with teen

The judge also rescinded Koch’s probation on child pornography charges from a 2014 arrest.

Koch pleaded guilty in March but indicated Wednesday he would change

his mind before Bertani-Tomczak and defense attorney Michael Renzi explained his sentences could be served at the same time.

“I wasn’t entirely sure what I was up against,” Koch told the judge.

Shortly before 10 p.m. Jan. 1, 2015, Joliet police were called to investigate a “suspicious vehicle” parked in the 1900 block of Brier Glen Drive. Officers found Koch and a 16-year-old girl in the backseat of Koch’s teal Dodge Shadow, according to police reports.

Koch, a registered sexual predator, told investigators he’d met the girl online and they traded explicit photos via cellphone, police said.

“He made statements he likes children from 7 to 17. ... Probation didn’t work,” Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Mary Fillipitch said.

Bertani-Tomczak noted probation had offered Koch “a chance for treatment and [placed] limitations on computer use.”

“And then you were arrested eight, nine months later. You had the chance on probation,” Bertani-Tomczak said.

“The first was possession. This one you’re acting on.”

Medical marijuana dispensary opens in Romeoville “Romeoville was very welcoming of us. It was really an ideal fit.”

By ANNA SCHIER aschier@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – A medical marijuana dispensary that recently opened in Romeoville is the primary provider in northern Will County, according to its operators.

Midwest Compassion Center opened March 26 at 1335 Lakeside Drive, Suite 4, and is one of three such dispensaries in Will County.

“Romeoville was very welcoming of us,” Midwest Compassion Center partner Nicole van Rensburg said. “It was really an ideal fit.”

With other dispensaries more than half an hour away, van Rensburg and her partner and brother, William Hollander, said they are the primary medical marijuana provider in northern Will and southern DuPage counties.

The siblings also operate neurological testing and allergy and asthma testing companies. They said they believe in the benefits of medical marijuana treatment for illnesses such as cancers, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease and HIV. They said it took about 2½ years for them to set up shop, from when they filed their application with the state to opening day. Village trustees unan-

“It’s been a long process,” van Rensburg said.

The dispensary adheres to state requirements and serves only patients who have obtained an identification

card and are named in a state database, or registered caregivers.

Compassion Center will donate 10 percent of net proceeds to Hines VA Hospital to benefit veterans receiving treatment for an amputation.

The siblings said many of their patients are veterans and that they make an effort to employ veterans as well.

The business also has an initiative with the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Chicago to host informative events for epilepsy patients about the benefits of medical marijuana. Additionally, Midwest Compassion Center is working with the foundation to provide free medical marijuana treatment to a patient in need.

JOLIET – Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow has announced the winners in his Dangers of Heroin Art Scholarship Contest.

More than 60 Will County high school students submitted an entry, which awarded college scholarships to the three winners whose artwork best illustrates the horrific consequences of using heroin, according to a news release from Glasgow’s office.

The winners are: • First place ($3,000 scholarship) – Jessica Johnson, a senior at Plainfield Central High School, for her work titled, “Outer Demons.”

• Second place ($2,000 scholarship) – Alexis Smith, a sophomore at Joliet Central High School, “Suffering.”

• Third place ($1,000 scholarship) – Rebecca Kahney, a senior at Lincoln-Way Central High School, “Heroin Kills.”

Glasgow decided during judging, because of the quality of the work submitted, to create a runners-up category and award three additional $500 scholarships for entries he felt should be honored.

The runners-up are: Skylar Bojan, a senior at Lincoln-Way Central

Awareness and Prevention Book,” scheduled for release later this year.

The first-place winner’s work will fill the back cover.

“The goal of this contest was to enlist high school students to sound a warning for their peers about the heroin scourge that has destroyed so many lives in Will County,” Glasgow said in the news release. “I asked students to first educate themselves about the horrendous dangers of using heroin, and then to use their knowledge to create a powerful piece of original artwork to drive home an anti-heroin message.

Across the board, the artwork I received exceeded every expectation in terms of quality and thoughtfulness.”

The scholarships are funded through money seized from criminals engaged in narcotics trafficking.

Fatal heroin overdoses in Will County reached record highs in 2015 and in 2012 at 53 deaths each year. Will County Coroner Pat O’Neil has said there have been 20 confirmed heroin-related overdose deaths so far this year, and estimates the county is on a pace to reach as many as 90 by the end of the year.

JOLIET – A man pleaded guilty Wednesday to sexually abusing a young girl three years ago.

Jermaine Mirenda, 35, was sentenced to 17 years in prison as part of a plea agreement presented to Judge Daniel Rozak. Mirenda would have faced up to 60 years in prison if he’d been tried and found guilty of predatory criminal sexual assault. Several other sex charges were dismissed Jermaine in exchange for the plea. Mirenda “It’s not enough time, but I support the plea agreement so [my daughter] ... our family can start to move on,” the victim’s mother wrote in a letter Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Mary Fillipitch read to Rozak.

In April 2013, the then-8-year-old victim told a relative that Mirenda had been having sexual contact with her

for four months at a Joliet Township residence. Will County Sheriff’s Office police arranged an interview for the girl at the Will County Children’s Advocacy Center and obtained medical reports. The girl had to be treated for a sexually transmitted disease, according to the mother’s letter.

Mirenda was arrested in September 2013. The victim’s mother said her daughter’s trust and self-esteem have been shattered by Mirenda’s actions.

“She is humiliated and traumatized,” she wrote in her letter to the judge. “She [recalls] his threats not to tell ... and fears his family will come after her.”

Will County Sheriff’s Office police investigated allegations of sexual contact between Mirenda and another minor, but Fillipitch said Wednesday they will remain uncharged.

Mirenda must serve at least 85 percent of his sentence and will have to register as a sex offender when he is released. According to court reports, he previously was convicted in Minnesota of receiving stolen property.

We do this to show compassion or empathy for those who lost their lives in the Holocaust,” Janicki said. “This is not for our glory. We are up there to think of those kids and babies who died.”

Hufford student Jefferson Kemoue said he moved to the U.S. five years ago from Africa where violence was an everyday occurrence, and he wants to encourage people to stop violence.

“I want the public to know the Holocaust happened and to tell the public to stop bullying, which could easily lead to something like the Holocaust,” Kemoue said. “We also need to stop being bystanders and stop to help one another.”

Joe worked as an operational manager for Schneider National for over 20 years, which relocated him and his family to Rochester, MN for eight years and then to Green Bay, WI, in 1992. Joe moved back home to Channahon in 2000, where he resided until his passing.

Joe had a great love for music. He picked up the accordion at a young age and taught himself how to play. Joe and his father played in a polka band, where they performed at many weddings. Joe attended many concerts and carried his love for music until the day he died.

He loved camping and especially fishing with his family. He also loved golfing and bowling

with his friends and family. Joe, above all else, was a caring soul, who always put his family and friends before himself.

HELSINKI – Carl Fredrik Reutersward, one of Sweden’s best-known modern artists and the creator of the iconic statue of a revolver barrel tied in a knot, has died at the age of 81.

The artist, who was a major influence in the modern Swedish art scene, died in a hospital in Helsingborg, southwestern Sweden, on Tuesday evening, Thomas Millroth, from the Carl Fredrik Reutersward Art Foundation, said. He gave no cause of death, but Reutersward, who suffered a stroke in 1980, was known to have been unwell for some time.

“He was instrumental in establishing contacts with the art scene in New York where everything was happening at an important time,” said Daniel Birnbaum, director of Stockholm’s Moderna Museet, adding that Reutersward’s circle of friends included Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg, and his works were exhibited in various museums, including MOMA in New York City in the 1970s. “[He] was close friends with American artists of his generation, but was

In 1974, he was awarded the position of guest professor at the Minneapolis School of Art. Reutersward, who became acquainted with John Lennon and Yoko Ono in Switzerland in 1969, was shocked by the 1980 shooting of the former Beatle.

“I was filled with bitterness and anger and immediately began to create a symbol for John Lennon and everyone else who has been a victim of such assassins,” he wrote after Lennon was shot outside his apartment in New York.

The twisted gun statue, which he called “Non Violence,” became an international symbol of peace the world over. One version of it sits outside the U.N. building in New York, with others in various cities around the world, including Los Angeles, Berlin, Stockholm, Caen, France, and in Luxembourg.

“The artwork that he left behind, especially the knotted gun, has become a true symbol of disarmament, has become a true symbol of peaceful resolution of conflicts,” U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric said of the sculpture seen by thousands of people every day, and a favorite for tourist photographs.

Illinois weighs change to child sex abuse law

SPRINGFIELD – A state lawmaker and former prosecutor wants to eliminate the statute of limitations on child sex crimes in Illinois, a response to the hush-money case against former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert.

Before being sentenced last week to 15 months in prison for breaking federal banking rules, Hastert admitted to sexually abusing teenagers decades ago when he coached high school wrestling in Yorkville. Prosecutors said Hastert, 74, paid $3.5 million to silence one accuser who testified in court, but he couldn’t be prosecuted for the underlying sex abuse because too much time had passed.

The plan by state Sen. Scott Bennett, a Champaign Democrat, would end the statute of limitations on child sex crimes, much as there is no limit on how long prosecutors can pursue charges for some other violent crimes such as murder.

Analysis adds fuel to fight over Illinois school funding

SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Bruce Rauner’s administration on Wednesday released an analysis of a Democratic plan to change the way Illinois funds education, prompting more Republican criticism that it’s a “major bailout” for Chicago Public Schools and fueling an increasingly contentious election-year fight.

The bill sponsor, Democratic Sen. Andy Manar of Bunker Hill, called the analysis flawed. He also criticized Rauner and other Republicans for being unwilling to change a funding system “that’s completely broken and rotten at its core.”

“We’re going to move forward with or without the governor,” Manar said. “He can choose to lead, or he can choose to take the path of opposition to reforming school funding in

But his proposal would keep the current school funding formula largely intact.

The California Senate Appropriations Committee is slated to vote on a proposal that would impact statutes of limitations on certain sex crimes against children and adults.

Zachary Hays, who also is suspected of killing of a man hours earlier in suburban Milwaukee, was charged with one count of first-degree intentional homicide and three counts of reckless endangering safety. The homicide charge carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison.

Hays was shot by police following the interstate incident and remained hospitalized Wednesday.

Czaczkowski and her family were returning to their home in Buffalo Grove after spending the weekend in the resort city of Wisconsin Dells when they passed a Chevrolet Blazer that Hays was driving on Interstate 90/94. Hays opened fire on the family’s BMW sedan, hitting Czaczkowski in the neck, according to investigators.

Police later stopped the Blazer with a spike strip and shot Hayes after he emerged with a gun, according to officers.

Investigators believe the shooting was random.

Czaczkowski’s husband works for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, but authorities have said there is no indication the family was targeted.

Youth home worker pleads not guilty in teen’s death

WAUKEGAN – A man who worked at a residential facility for troubled children in Lake Villa has pleaded not guilty to fatally choking a 16-year-old Chicago boy who lived there.

James Davis of Round Lake entered the plea Tuesday in Lake County court to charges of involuntary manslaughter and obstruction of justice.

The teen, Shaquan Allen, was living at the Allendale Association in Lake Villa. Police said Davis and another employee struggled with the boy while responding to a “behavioral issue,” resulting in Davis putting him into a chokehold. The boy was pronounced dead at a hospital March 30. Police said the employees tried to pass the incident off as an accident by saying the boy slipped and struck his head.

Trump’s path to nomination causes agony for some in GOP

By JULIE PACE and STEVE PEOPLES The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Donald Trump’s last Republican foe, Ohio Gov. John Kasich, ended his quixotic presidential campaign Wednesday, cementing Trump’s remarkable triumph as his party’s presumptive nominee and launching him toward a likely fall battle with Hillary Clinton. Some Republican leaders began reluctantly rallying around Trump, but others agonized over their party’s future.

The billionaire businessman vowed to unite the splintered GOP, even as he was bitingly dismissive of members who have been critical of his campaign.

“Those people can go away and maybe come back in eight years after we served two terms,” he said on NBC’s “Today” Show. “Honestly, there are some people I really don’t want.”

Trump’s challenge in uniting Republicans was abundantly clear Wednesday. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell issued a frosty statement saying he had committed to backing the GOP nominee and noting Trump’s “obligation” to bring the party together. And in a remarkable move, the last two Republicans to occupy the Oval Office – President George H.W. Bush and President George W. Bush – made clear they would not help Trump win the White House.

Clinton, in her first remarks since Trump’s new status was crystallized, said she was more than prepared to handle the kind of deeply personal attacks that helped defeat Trump’s Republican rivals.

“To me, this is the classic case of a blustering, bullying guy,” the all-but-certain Democratic nominee told CNN. The long and chaotic Republican primary came to an abrupt end after Trump’s decisive victory Tuesday in Indiana. His win pushed Tex-

“The people of our country changed me,” Kasich said during an emotional speech announcing the end of his campaign.

“They changed me with the John Kasich stories of their lives.”

Trump’s takeover of the GOP marks one of the most stunning political feats in modern political history. A first-time candidate, he eschewed traditional fundraising and relied more on his own star power than television advertising to draw attention. He flouted political decorum with controversial statements about women and minorities, leaving some Republicans convinced he won’t be able to cobble together the diverse coalition needed to win the general election.

“It’s his party between now and November, but I don’t think it’s going to be his party after November,” said Peter Wehner, a former adviser to President George W. Bush. Wehner is among the Republicans vowing to never vote for Trump, even if that means essentially handing Clinton the presidency.

er who backed Cruz, withheld his support for Trump Wednesday, saying the real estate mogul needs to prove his conservative credentials with his vice presidential pick and more information about what kind of judges he would appoint. “It’s kind of a wait-and-see moment with Mr. Trump,” he said.

Vander Plaats and a handful of other Republicans are clinging to the hope that an alternative option might yet emerge. Operatives have floated former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Nebraska Sen. Ben Sasse and former Oklahoma Sen. Tom Coburn as possible candidates for a third-party or independent bid. But that is a long shot at best, with filing deadlines for getting on state ballots fast approaching.

There was notable silence from House Speaker Paul Ryan, who has spoken critically of Trump. Aides to both Ryan and McConnell said the Republican leaders had not spoken with Trump since his Indiana victory.

A spokesman for George W. Bush said the he “does not plan to participate in or comment on the presidential campaign.” And a spokesman for Bush’s father said simply, “At age 91, President Bush is retired from politics.”

Still, several GOP governors and senators said they would support Trump.

Radical freedom of true Christianity “If you are going to kill me, that is fine. It is better to be in God’s hands than in the wrong hands.”

Father Douglas Bazi, a Chaldean priest from Iraq, was recently in Washington, D.C., explaining to me some of what was going on in his head when Islamic terrorists kidnapped him.

It’s impossible not to be humbled when meeting Bazi. What faith he and his people have. But he’s quick to insist: “If the same thing happened to you, I believe that you [would be] be strong, more than us.

“This is the cost to be Christian, to follow Jesus is not just carrying the cross. Jesus was smart. He said carry the cross and follow. ‘Follow’ means you have to go through your life and prove your faith in your life,” Bazi says.

This attitude shows how critical the presence of Christians in the Middle East is. Christians there are a living example of a way out of the conflict that has marred that region.

“We choose to love,” he explains.

“From my experience, when we are through the bad event or tragic experience, the only thing that can make us survive is faith,” Bazi attests.

Bazi knows what he’s talking about. During his time in captivity, his teeth were knocked out and cigars burned into his skin. But he remained steadfast in his faith. His chief concerns were not for himself, but for his family. He did not want them to suffer.

“The challenges, the turbulence, push my people to be stronger every day. This is the strategy, how we survive.”

This is faith, he tells me. But this is how it is for anyone who claims to be Christian.

He explains this is the reason his people are not bitter and “do not blame God for what has happened” to them and their home. “They know what happened to us is by man, not

by God.” Bazi is on a tour of the U.S. right now, with scheduled public events in New York, Phoenix and Washington, D.C., among other cities.

He comes to give testimony to what Carl Anderson of the Knights of Columbus described this past week at the United Nations as “the world’s greatest humanitarian crisis since World War II.”

Bazi overflows with gratitude, which I confess I had a hard time handling at first. Earlier this year, he nearly had to beg the U.S. to recognize what has happened to him and other Christians in the Middle East is genocide. And yet, he is all about thanks. He is grateful for prayers, he is grateful for people listening to him and he is grateful for people who have contributed to relief funds for his people – a notable one run by the Knights of Columbus.

Bazi is but one of many who have found themselves facing the possibility of martyrdom. He tells me that during his captivity, blindfolded and bound, uncertain whether he would live or die, the terrorists were actually “hostages in my hand.” He points out how terrorists so often cover their faces. “They are ashamed. They are afraid.” Christians who truly choose Christ “have no shame to be hidden.”

Bazi and his people have “the only thing that you can walk away with in the end, the only thing that lasts.”

If you have the opportunity to hear Bazi, you will be better for it. The Christian martyrs throughout history teach us about the true selfless nature of love. And their blood cries out to us to never take our freedom for granted. We are all made better by people who put their lives in God’s hands with the kind of purity of heart that Bazi and his people radiate. If you despair of politics in America, look to them.

Let’s shake up old election calendar Let’s shake up the calendar.

Isn’t it nice to be needed for a change?

Indiana has been basking in the warm glow of national attention, as the presidential primary race has reached a white-hot temperature here in the Hoosier State. The candidates have risen to the challenge, criss-crossing the state in a mad rush to scoop up every available vote.

Wouldn’t it be nice to feel like this every four years instead of every, say, 20? Indiana has a terrible spot in the calendar, and has for years. Most of the other states already have made their choices. It’s usually a done deal by the time anyone asks us our opinion. It’s only an accident of this unprecedented election cycle that we even have a say in this crazy process at all. Usually, no one has any reason to care about anything we say.

What will it take for the Democratic and Republican parties to realize Iowa and New Hampshire don’t necessarily represent the demographics of the rest of the country?

Iowa has been first since 1972. That’s more than 40 years. Isn’t it time for a change? What if we rotated the honors around? Why does it have to be the same old calendar every single time? We here in Indiana don’t need to be first every time, but once would be nice. We don’t even have to

be first; even if we were somewhere near the front of the line, it would be a welcome change.

We all know change won’t come from within. The establishment has no reason to change, left to its own devices, as history has shown. And there are those in the early voting states who see candidates fawn over them for months at a time before a single caucus is held or vote is cast.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton racked up a huge delegate lead early in the race, as many Southern states went to the polls first. But, what does this really mean in a larger sense? It’s likely neither Democratic candidate is going to win any of those states in the general election, so what difference does it make who wins Mississippi? Independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders won in Wisconsin and Michigan, both battleground states that could go either way in November. Yet, these victories may have come too late in the calendar to matter as much as they might have otherwise.

And Republican Party loyalists can’t be happy with how this mess is turning out. Would those in the #NeverTrump movement have a better shot if the order was changed? We’ll never know unless we try it.

Plainfield North blanks Minooka Tigers improve to 5-0 in Southwest Prairie, move closer to conference title

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – While Jane Crowe has been able to rely on good defense from her Plainfield North girls soccer team, getting an early goal to go with that has been a bit of a struggle, especially in league play.

That’s why the Tigers coach was pleased after her squad connected just past the midway mark of the opening half of their match at Minooka on Wednesday.

North connected again early in the final half and then made those goals stand as it posted its 10th shutout with a 2-0 Southwest Prairie Conference victory.

“They’ve been having a good sea-

son, so we knew that we’d have to work for everything,” Crowe said. “We struggled in the last couple of conference games getting an early goal, and that’s why we’ve made things difficult on ourselves. So, we talked about getting an early goal and we got one early enough to take some of the pressure off and then I felt like after that, we were able to control things.

“We also talk about getting that second goal. It’s easy for teams to keep working real hard when you’re down by a goal, but when you’re down by two goals, it takes a lot out of them. We’re still kind of injured now, and we have a couple of girls who are out, but should be back by next week. So, I think the other girls are being forced to step up and when we get those two back, we’ll

have more depth and I think we’ll be in good shape.”

While the Tigers (11-5-2, 5-0) moved a step closer to continuing its long run of SPC titles, both squads also figure to be factors in the upcoming state playoffs. North is the third seed and hosts a regional in the Metea Valley Sectional, while Minooka (11-3, 2-2) is seeded No. 2 in its sub-sectional of the Normal Community Sectional.

“They’re a good team and they play well, and possess well,” Indians coach Chris Brolley said. “We have some things that we can fix but that was a good test going into Oswego [Thursday] and then into the playoffs. You have to credit the girls since they all played hard.

“We have three games left to fin-

ish up and we want to win all three of those, so we’re going in nice and hot.

This is a good group and they don’t care who or where we’re playing. They love soccer and they play it well, so that makes them fun to coach.”

North capitalized on one of the first good opportunities that came its way to move in front for good. In the 23rd minute, Raven Withaar sent a throw-in to Megan Breier, who passed to Molly Grant, who connected from close range to make it 1-0.

Not much happened throughout the remainder of the opening half. The lone pressure Tigers keeper Emma Veselsky faced was a late liner from Martina Kotrba.

Rice’s 7-run sixth overwhelms Providence

NEW LENOX – For five innings Wednesday, Providence Catholic senior right-hander Connor Hilty had everything going his way.

Hilty had blanked Chicago Catholic Blue foe Brother Rice, the state’s No. 1-ranked team by Prep Baseball Report, on four hits. With the help of strong defensive support, he had escaped jams in the third and fourth innings.

The Celtics were leading by one on Jim Jeffries’ two-out, RBI single in the bottom of the second inning. That would be Providence’s only hit until the seventh inning, when Jeffries delivered another two-out, RBI single.

Celtics coach Mark Smith decided after five innings to go to his bullpen, which has been reliable all season.

This time it did not work, as the Crusaders erupted for seven runs on five hits and an error against relievers Tom Kelley and Jackson Stulas in the top of the sixth inning and went on to win, 7-2.

“After we got that first goal, we saw them drop a little and then we definitely stepped up to get that second goal, which came off a great ball from Sam (Elster). I love how close this team is, and we’ve definitely worked hard and we’re ready for regionals and sectionals.”

Minooka had some of its best chances shortly after the break. Hannah Rieker had a good try blocked by a defender and then Brooke Brodzinski sent an effort that went just wide. But North took a 2-0 lead in the 51st minute when Elster made a nice pass to Breier, who put in an attempt from close range.

“We’re in a funk right now,” said Smith, whose Celtics (17-6, 9-4) have lost five of their past six. “That’s the kind of things that are going to happen when you’re going this way.

“We didn’t do a lot well, but we did some things OK. We had some great defense, and Hilty pitched really, really well. The bottom line is, you get three hits, you aren’t going to win. We are

not swinging the bats well. We have to do better.”

Hilty struck out two and walked one against a Brother Rice lineup (232, 14-0) that was hitting .367 entering the game. The Celtics turned a double play started by second baseman Mike Madej in the second inning, and Madej made two other excellent defensive plays to support Hilty.

“Coach told me he wanted five good innings from me, and hopefully the pen would take over,” Hilty said. “Everything was working for me, the game just didn’t end the way it should have.”

Hilty and everyone involved in any athletic program at Providence are playing with heavy hearts after the death this week of popular sophomore football player Charlie Dunne. A moment of silence in his memory was part of the pregame fare.

“Everyone is pretty upset,” Hilty said. “We dedicated our season to him, put his initials on our caps. We’re trying to play hard for him. It gives us something to play for.”

“Our kids were inspired by playing for Charlie,” Smith said. “The wake

will be here at Providence on Friday night and the funeral will be Saturday.

It should be tough on the kids emotionally.

“No parent should ever lose a child.”

The Celtics are in the midst of a week that would have been tough without Dunne’s passing.

“We said this would be a week where we find out how good we are, and there also are the other circumstances to deal with,” Smith said. “But we are better than this. Brother Rice is a good team. They’re all good teams that we’re playing. But these are games, at our place, that we should win.”

Jeffries’ second-inning single drove in Drew Hunniford, who had walked and stolen second second. Jackson Dvorak opened the bottom of the seventh with a single, Stulas walked and Jeffries delivered his second run-scoring single to account for the final score.

Other than that, however, the Celtics did precious little against Guzek, who struck out eight, six on called third strikes. Providence left one runner on base through six innings.

Gronsky had a host family when he was here in 2014, and Rodriguez had the same host family last year. That family is hosting both of them this season. They might form the 2016 double-play combination or the regular left side of the infield.

Rodriguez finished last season with a .287 batting average, 18 doubles, one triple, four home runs and 39 RBIs, plus 18 stolen bases. He had a .369 on-base percentage and .378 slugging mark for a .747 OPS. Isom noted he was writing Rodriguez’s name into the middle of the lineup toward the end of the season.

“The first half of the season, it seemed that I was hitting the ball right at guys,” Rodriguez said. “More of them dropped in the second half of the year.”

The strong season helped him land a tryout with the Arizona Diamondbacks in early September.

“I showed well there but didn’t get an opportunity with them,” Rodriguez said. “So I spent the rest of the offseason trying to get ready for this season.

“I’ve been preparing my body for the grind. Obviously it’s not 135, 140 games like in Double-A or Triple-A, but with a 96-game schedule here and planning to play every day, it’s still a grind.”

Rodriguez spent 31/2 years in the Milwaukee Brewers’ organization before beginning his tenure with the Slammers.

“I’m back here because it’s a lot of fun every day and I’m playing for a great coach in Isom,” he said.

Rodriguez said players of Gronsky’s ilk are making this spring into “what seems like a more competitive camp” than what the Slammers had in 2015. “We have a lot of guys for the nine positions. The talent is right here. We’re trying to be the best team we can be ... but no predictions.”

The Slammers have not been to the Frontier League playoffs since 2011, their first year in the league, when they won it all. They have had teams since then that on paper projected as playoff contenders.

Baseball can be cruel that way. But with Rodriguez and Gronsky among the mainstays, Isom said he has a strong feeling this will be the year Joliet sees the postseason again.

JOLIET – The most ardent of Joliet Slammers’ fans will recall infielder Jake Gronsky’s previous stint with the team.

The casual observer might have forgotten him. Gronsky was here for nine days and played in seven games in June 2014, when the St. Louis Cardinals purchased his contract.

Gronsky was released by the Cardinals in the offseason, and he is back with the Slammers. With his roommate, incumbent Alfredo Rodriguez, entrenched at shortstop, Gronsky or Carter Bell could be at second base and the other at third base when the Slammers open the regular season May 12 at Windy City.

The Slammers conducted a practice Tuesday at Silver Cross Field preceding Wednesday’s initial exhibition game at Schaumburg. Gronsky, who played his college baseball at Monmouth University in New Jersey, recalled how he got to Joliet the last time, and circumstances surrounding the sale of his contract to the Cardinals.

“Joliet holds a special place in my heart,” Gronsky said. “It’s where my career started. No one drafted me that year out of college, and no organizations wanted to sign me between the draft and when I came here. (Slammers manager Jeff) Isom gave me a chance. I have a lot of respect for him.”

As for leaving town so soon after arriving, Gronsky said, “It’s a funny story. I actually was in the team store here at the park, about to buy Slammers’ hats for my family members who were on the way here to see me play when I got the word the Cardinals had purchased my contract. When my parents got here, I was able to tell them in person that I was going to the Cardinals. That was special.”

RB Ka’Deem Carey – To start OTAs, the No. 2 running back position should still be Carey’s to lose. He improved a lot last season and was valuable late in wins over the Chargers, Rams and Buccaneers. LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Doug O’Neill was all smiles after early 3-1 favorite Nyquist drew the No. 13 post for the 142nd Kentucky Derby.

The number with an unlucky reputation didn’t faze the trainer. In fact, it brought back good memories.

Nyquist left from the same spot when he won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile last year at Keeneland, part of his 7-0 career record.

“No matter if we drew the one or the 20, the thought is we were going to leave there with the intent of being forwardly placed and just play it by ear,” O’Neill said Wednesday after the post-position draw. “More than anything, I’m so happy with the way he’s training, the way he’s acting. He’s thriving on all the positive attention.”

Four horses have won from the No. 13 spot since 1900, most recently Smarty Jones in 2004. O’Neill, jockey Mario Gutierrez and owner Paul Reddam teamed to win the race in 2012 with I’ll Have Another.

“The whole team is pumped up,” O’Neill said. “We’re just very optimistic for a big day.”

That fee boosted the Derby purse to $2,391,600 if 20 horses start. The winner would receive $1,631,000.

Japanese entry Lani is listed at 30-1.

The horse is known to be unpredictable in the gate, where he landed in the No. 8 hole.

New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson has a pair of long shots in 20-1 Mo Tom and 30-1 Tom’s Ready. Saints coach Sean Payton was on hand to lend support. Mo Tom drew the No. 4 post and Tom’s Ready got No. 12.

Fines amended for WNBA stars playing overseas

By DOUG FEINBERG The Associated Press NEW YORK – The WNBA and its players union have agreed to amend the collective bargaining agreement on fines for overseas play.

According to emails obtained by The Associated Press, players will no longer be fined for missing time for overseas national team commitments if they notify their WNBA teams in advance.

About a dozen players, including Epiphanny Prince, Natalie Achonwa, Shavonte Zellous and Joliet Catholic graduate Allie Quigley (a Chicago Sky guard and the two-time defending WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year) missed games last season and were subsequently fined.

Tamika Catchings said. “I think as a league, last year was a big experiment with a lot of players having to represent their countries to play in the Olympics.

How do you penalize those people? It’s something we tossed around a lot. We talked with a lot of the foreigners, who want to play in the WNBA. It’s an honor to represent their country, a win-win for all.”

With this being an Olympic year, even more players will miss time. It’s not just those from teams that already have qualified for the Rio Games, but also those playing in the last-chance qualifying tournament in the middle of June.

The league and union settled last year’s cases on an individual basis and players will be getting at least some of that fine money back.

While most of those fines were 1 percent of their salary for each game missed, a few players were given a 2.5 percent penalty – the maximum allowed. Tiffany Hayes and Aneika Henry of the Atlanta Dream were fined the higher amount after they missed five games to play in a 3-on-3 tournament in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Those fines came on top of the money the players lost for being suspended without pay for the games they missed.

“In a sense they were getting double fined,” Catchings said. “We consider it a win-win where everyone benefits. Any time you can get money back, we’re like ‘hallelujah.’ We’re looking to the future of the CBA. For the league, it’s important to have foreign players feel comfortable to play in the WNBA and still represent their country.”

Ortiz hits 509th homer to power Boston past Sox

CHICAGO – David Ortiz hit his 509th home run to put the Boston Red Sox ahead to stay in a 5-2 victory over the White Sox on Wednesday night.

Ortiz’s two-run shot to right field off Carlos Rodon in the fifth inning tied him with Gary Sheffield for 25th all-time. It was the sixth homer of his farewell season and his 451st with Boston, one off Carl Yastrzemski’s club mark.

Ortiz added an RBI single in the seventh against Zach Duke, and embattled Clay Buchholz (1-3) was sharp over seven innings in Boston’s fourth win in five games.

Jose Abreu’s two-run homer in the first was the only blemish for Buchholz, who allowed three hits and struck out six.

Rodon (1-4) gave up three runs and six hits over six innings as the White Sox failed to win their 20th game and match the crosstown Cubs for most wins in the majors.

Craig Kimbrel pitched a scoreless ninth for his ninth save, after the 40-year-old Ortiz helped Boston break out of its funk against left-handers.

The Red Sox managed four hits off Jose Quintana on Tuesday night, falling to 0-3 against lefty starters. But Xander Bogaerts had three hits Wednesday, including an RBI single off Rodon in the second.

That was enough in Buchholz’s best outing of the season.

He entered with a 6.51 ERA and Boston had lost all five of his starts, prompting manager John Farrell to say the right-hander needed to “attack the strike zone.”

Ben Zobrist hit a three-run home run, Anthony Rizzo also connected and Jon Lester worked out of a pair of jams to lead the Cubs over the second-place Pittsburgh Pirates, 6-2, Wednesday for a three-game sweep.

With their seventh win in eight games, the Cubs improved to a major league-best 20-6. The Cubs have won seven straight road games and completed their first sweep in Pittsburgh since Sept. 7 through 9, 2012. They lead the division by six games.

“We pitched really well in this series.

We’ve been doing that the whole year,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. “And the offense was good again. But the part that permits the offense to get into the flow of the game is the pitching’s been so good. That we are able to stay even or most of the time on top of the other side.

“Offensively, we keep having good at-bats over the course of the game and then have a chance to work people down by the end. That’s pretty much been the roadmap to this point.”

Zobrist’s third-inning homer put the Cubs ahead after center fielder Andrew McCutchen dropped Rizzo’s two-out liner for an error.

Lester (3-1) scattered eight hits in 52/3 scoreless innings, struck out five and walked two. The left-hander has allowed one run or none in five of six starts this season.

Pittsburgh loaded the bases in the fourth and put runners on first and

second in the fifth – both times with no outs.

The Pirates have lost four straight after a six-game winning streak.

“It says a lot about pitch execution because [Leser] got in some jams and was able to pitch out of it, which was really nice to see,” Cubs catcher David Ross said. “He’s done that a couple times here lately.”

Rizzo doubled and scored on Javier Baez’s fifth-inning double and hit his ninth home run of the season in the seventh off Ryan Vogelsong. He had three hits, scored three times and finished the series with five doubles and the home run.

Baez also had three of the Cubs’ 12 hits and drove in the game’s final run with an RBI forceout in the ninth. Addison Russell added two hits and Kris Bryant extended his hitting streak to 10 games.

FREEDOM IN HER SOUL Celebrate Recovery at Minooka Bible Church helps woman overcome drug addiction Know more

C

HANNAHON – Kattie Lynn Bradshaw felt welcomed and accepted the moment she stepped through the door.

It was July 2015. Bradshaw, who was addicted to narcotics, was attending her first Celebrate Recovery meeting at Minooka Bible Church.

Bradshaw said she had participated in Narcotics Anonymous in the past only to find it was the best way to meet fellow drug dealers.

But this group, with its focus on Jesus Christ, seemed different.

This time, Bradshaw felt hope.

Bradshaw said she was the Minooka support group’s first heroin addict, but no one judged her.

“The people still accepted me and loved me,” said Bradshaw, 32. “I saw the freedom inside their souls.

I knew I desperately needed that. I wanted that.”

Bradshaw had stopped using narcotics about 20 days before that first meeting, but only because she was facing felony charges related to her drug use. She said the personal connection to her higher power – in this case, Jesus Christ – made recovery possible.

“Someone had to save me,” Bradshaw said. “I was very, very broken.”

As Bradshaw developed her relationship with God, she learned to see herself through God’s eyes, not the world’s eyes. The people Bradshaw met through Celebrate Recovery helped foster this new self-image, Bradshaw said.

“They walked me through the Bible and showed me that Jesus met with the brokenhearted, the cast-off and the misfits,” Bradford said. “He went after those most consider disqualified and nonredeemable.”

Bradford is currently writing a book about her experiences. Her coping skills these days is prayer.

“When things come at me and seem overwhelming and too much for me to handle, I lay it at his feet and say, ‘God, I know you’ve got this.

Help me,’ ” Bradshaw said. ...

• Age 8 – Bradshaw’s mother became an addict.

With the help of God and the support of Celebrate Recovery, a Christian recovery program, Kattie Lynn Bradshaw of Channahon is rejoicing in her walk with God. • Age 10 – Had known three different stepdads, and drank and smoked marijuana with her sister and neighborhood kids. Became a ward of the state. Was raped by a 21-year-old man at gunpoint. Was arrested for joyriding.

• Age 11 – Was returned to her mother for a short time. Taken into custody for joyriding. Began having sex with a 26-year-old man. Over the next two years, had more sex with more men.

• Age 12 – Met biological father for the first time.

• Age 13 – Began a four-year relationship with a 19-year-old man, Bradshaw’s first experience of “love.”

• Age 16 – Again returned to her mother. Decided to leave “home” to live in local parks, truck stops and cornfields.

• Age 17 – Bonded with mother through cocaine addiction. Met the man who would become her future husband; the two began a drug-dealing business, starting with marijuana and progressing to harder drugs.

They lived in her car for four years.

Bradshaw would deal for the next 15 years.

• 2002 – Living in a motel, miscarried first child.

• 2003 – First son is born.

• 2004 – Marries baby’s father.

• 2005 – Second son is born. Bradshaw, determined to make a new life

for her boys, returns to school.

• 2006 – Earns GED. Works two part-time jobs and attends college full time. A friend moves in to watch the kids. Quits college to become a fulltime industrial designer.

• 2012 – The marriage deteriorates.

Is now addicted to prescription painkillers.

• 2014 – Marriage is dissolved. A week later, moves in with a childhood friend who also is a recovering heroin addict. When they become ill after running out of prescription narcotics, the man introduces Bradshaw to heroin.

• 2015 – Bradshaw decides to commit suicide in her car. The police find her, arrest her, find drugs and needles in the car and impound her car. Facing felony charges, Bradshaw accepts an invitation to Celebrate Recovery at Minooka Bible Church, in part because Celebrate Recovery also offers children’s ministries.

Bradshaw felt her two boys – ages 12 and 10 – needed healing, too.

Ministerial Association will be celebrating the 64th annual National Day of Prayer with a free event open to the public.

An outdoor service will be held on the southwest corner of Lockport Street and Route 59, It will begin at 11:30am and run until 12:15. The service will start with worship and lead into the American Legion color guard presentation of the flag. Leaders from local churches will be on hand to lead prayers. The service will close with “God Bless America”.

JOLIET – St. Edward’s and Episcopal Christ Church of Joliet will present its Ascension/Pentecost Taize’ Service of Healing at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the parish’s Christ Campus, located at 10422 Grove Road, just north of Caton Farm Road in Joliet.

The Taize’ service is distinguished by beautiful music, periods of silent meditation and prayer. There is no Eucharist, homily, or offering, free-will or otherwise, at a Taize’ service.

Joliet Franciscans host annual tea

JOLIET – On April 24, over 200 women joined the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate at the Annual Afternoon Tea held at the Jacob Henry Mansion in Joliet.

Many of the women wore colorful hats.

Twenty-four basket raffle items were on display. There was a music interlude by Karen Isberg. Sr. Dolores Zemont, president of the congregation, greeted guests and thanked them for their attendance and support.

Guests were asked to bring a donation of boxed food items for a local food pantry. Over 300 boxes of cereal, cake and soup mixes were delivered the next

morning to St. John’s Food Pantry in Joliet.

The Afternoon Tea is an annual event held to raise funds and awareness of the congregation. If you would like information on the tea event or to be placed on the invitation list for next year, contact the mission advancement office at 815725-8735.

Power walk to spark weight loss Dear Dr. K: When I first started walking for exercise, I lost some weight. Since then, my weight has plateaued. How can I adjust my walking routine to start losing weight again?

Dear Reader: To reignite your weight loss, you need to keep challenging your body. That means walking farther, faster and more often. The more vigorous your workout, the longer you’ll continue to burn calories after you stop exercising.

The number of calories you burn increases as you go faster. But despite what you might think, taking longer strides is not the best way to speed up. Rather, taking quicker steps with good posture (keeping your head up and not bending over) and proper technique (bending your arms and rolling your feet from heel to toe) are the foundation for improving your pace. Once you’ve mastered these basics, the following tips will help you turn up your speed even more: • Power your arm swing. Many people punch their arms forward when they walk. But you’ll get more speed and power if you focus on your back muscles.

Squeeze your shoulder blades and drive your elbows behind you, keeping them close to your body. Pull your arm back far enough so your hand just passes your hip. Then let your arm swing naturally forward to chest height as you pull the other one back.

• Squeeze your glutes. Each time your heel strikes the ground, squeeze your buttock muscles. This technique naturally shortens your stride.

• Loosen up your hips. When you feel like you’re walking so fast you want to run, it’s time to get your hips in on the action. You want your hips moving forward and backward – not side to side. As your

• Count your steps for one minute at any point during your walk. Then speed up to see if you can take more steps during the next minute. The more steps you take, the faster you are going.

• Train for strength. Strong leg and buttock muscles power your stride, helping you to achieve higher speeds.

If you’re not up for going fast your entire walk, intervals are a good option.

Alternate fast walking for short periods of time with equal or longer intervals of slower or moderate-paced walking.

The basic idea is pretty obvious: More vigorous exercise leads to more weight loss. What’s less obvious is there are groups of muscles many people don’t use during brisk walking. If you recruit them into your pattern of walking, you’ll use them more and thereby work harder.

Every time I talk about regular exercise, I emphasize the goal is not just achieving a healthy weight. I do think you’ll achieve your weight-loss goals by altering your walking routine the way I describe above. But if you don’t, you still will be greatly reducing your risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke and several kinds of cancer.

Dear Abby: A friend sent me a sample line of face care products from a company she works for. She included a lip balm I used, and sunscreen that contains a chemical to which I am allergic. I offered to send that sample back.

When I researched the ingredients of the other products, I was dismayed to see they contain many chemicals, too. (I try to use organic products as much as possible because I have sensitive skin.) Should I return the whole unused sample kit? I obviously can’t return the lip balm. Or should I just thank her and keep – but not use – them? Dear Abby: DEAR ABBY My beautiful, kindhearted, Jeanne loving daughter Phillips “Cora” has a “best friend” she used to be very close with. However, her friend now has a boyfriend, so Cora doesn’t see her on weekends or receive texts from her very often anymore. Everything they plan to do together, the girl cancels. My daughter is so distraught it is affecting her emotionally and physically.

Cora has told her friend many times how she feels, but it has made no difference. Her friend promises her things and never follows through.

My daughter suffers from social anxiety, so making a good friend is a rarity for her. I tell her I love her and I’m always here for her, but although Cora sees a therapist, nothing seems to comfort her.

The school she attends stops accepting new students after ninth grade, so there is no chance of her meeting anybody new. We have tried having her join other activities, but they don’t last. I’m desperate to help her. Any advice? –

This deal has two faces. Yesterday, South got the girl when he made four hearts. But if West had been more resourceful and East had cooperated, South’s contract could have been given a funeral. How? After West’s one-spade opening bid was passed around to South, he might have jumped to three hearts.

In this balancing position, it would have been an intermediate jump overcall (not weak), showing at least a six-card suit and some 15-17 points.

But it would typically have indicated a stronger suit than this one. North’s three-heart raise was no thing of beauty, with a 10-loser hand, but with four-card heart support, it was hard to pass.

Against four hearts, West leads the spade king. East overtakes with his ace and returns the spade four.

How should West analyze the deal?

West can see a third trick in the club ace, but he should realize that South will know he has the heart king. East passed over one spade and has produced an ace; he cannot have the heart king.

West should see that he has one faint chance. He should cash the club ace (although it isn’t necessary in this deal), then lead his lowest spade.

East, who from the bidding knows his partner has six spades, should see what is required -- he ruffs with the heart eight. This uppercut promotes a trump trick for East-West.
