JOLIET – With courthouse design plans moving forward, Will County officials on Tuesday discussed developing a website to inform the public and field questions from residents.

“We need a streamlined process.

There are going to be more and more questions from constituents, and we want to give them the consideration and respect they deserve,” said Will County Capital Improvements Chairman Ragan Freitag, R-Wilmington.

The Chicago-based Gilbane Construction was selected in March to be the courthouse project construction manager. The company was selected, in part, because it prioritized community outreach and suggested developing a website with the county, she said.

Will County Board members suggested during Tuesday’s Will County Capital Improvements Committee that project details and a frequently asked questions

section would be included if a website is created.

“I think it’s a good idea to do a website, so all the questions can be on the website, and if we have the answers, we have the answers. We can refer people to the site,” said committee member Mike Fricilone, R-Homer Glen. “That’s full transparency at that point.”

One correspondence referenced Tuesday was a March 16 letter from the Will County Chapter of the Illinois Audubon Society. In the letter, the organization’s president, Rita Renwick, raises concern about project renderings that were provided by the county and appeared in local media.

“It appears that the new county courthouse will have large expanses of glass on its surface,” the letter states. “It has been estimated that from 100 million to 1 billion birds a year die after colliding with buildings and other man-made structures. ... Birds are unable to detect glass as a barrier and avoid it. They perceive they are flying into the sky as seen

Will County property tax revenue payments lagging

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Will County’s corporate cash balance was significantly lower in the first four months of its fiscal year, compared with previous years, according to a quarterly financial report presented Tuesday to the County Board’s Finance Committee.

The county’s fiscal year runs from Dec. 1 to Nov. 30. The county’s corporate fund stood at $19 million as of March 31, compared with $29.6 million in March 2015 and $33.8 million in March 2016.

When asked Tuesday by committee members to explain the discrepancy, budget director ReShawn Howard said Will County’s anticipated property tax payments are unusually slow this

year. The county was also waiting on about $8.8 million in transfer payments from the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund, she said.

“The little drop is [due to] the timing of our payments,” Howard said.

Property tax revenue accounts for about $67 million of the county’s $196 million corporate fund budget.

Revenue is down in Will County foreclosure sales. The county has brought in about $243,000, as of March 31, compared with $368,558 the same time last year. The county brought in about $1.4 million between 2008 and 2012.

At the height of the recession in 2010, about 7,000 foreclosures were filed with the county.

Now the county is down to about 2,200, county officials said.

Freitag and other board members said Tuesday those design renderings were just that – renderings. The final design may not include the large glass facade.

Freitag said after Tuesday’s meeting that Will County Executive Larry Walsh’s office responded to Renwick’s letter. However, she added, a system needs to be in place so questions and concerns are answered in a timely manner.

To pay for the 11-story courthouse, and a number of other capital projects, the Will County Board is issuing of up to $275 million in bonds. The project initiative also includes a northern satellite courthouse, a sheriff’s facility on Laraway Road and a health department.

Construction of the sheriff’s facility on Laraway Road is slated to start in September.

Dave Tkac, deputy chief of staff for the Will County Executive Office, said he hopes to have a courthouse design team put together by June.

In other news, Will County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Jerry Nudera said the department received $50,000 in seed grant money from real estate developer CenterPoint Properties to create a drugfree community outreach program.

The seed money will be used to hire Cherry Powell, prevention specialist with Chestnut Health Systems, as project coordinator. After the program is up and running for one year, Nudera said the office can apply for a five-year, $125,000 yearly grant from the federal government.

The federal Drug-Free Communities Support Program provides dollars to coalitions that prevent youth from abusing drugs and alcohol by engaging the local community.

Seniors and kids pair up to enjoy books in new program

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media correspondent SHOREWOOD – Everett Stach, 4, of Plainfield walked next to a table filled with children’s book selections such as “Biscuit” and “Thomas the Tank Engine” until he found a book about his favorite subject, dinosaurs.

He handed it to his book buddy and the pair found a quiet spot to read.

“I love any book about dinosaurs,” Everett said. “My favorite is T-Rex, and I like it when people read to me.”

The Shorewood-Troy Public Library, in conjunction with Troy Township, has launched a new Book Buddies program where preschoolers and seniors read together once a month at the Troy Township Community Center.

“We wanted to reach out to the community and bring people together using the library. Normally, these groups of people would not spend time together, so the cross-generational thing was a nice aspect,” Shorewood-Troy Public Library Children’s Department head Tiernen Peacy-Dye said.

The idea was the result of a brainstorm of Kristin McGaffic, the library’s children’s outreach coordinator, and Shalyn Rodriguez, the teen and adult Outreach coordinator.

The two discussed ways to marry their divisions, and the Book Buddies program was born.

The pair then contacted Troy Township, because of its relationship with area seniors. Book Buddies plans to meet every fourth Thursday of the month.

“Many of our programs are geared toward senior citizens, so we are excited to have a younger generation in the center,” Troy Township Administrator Jennifer Dylik said.

Rodriguez said six seniors and seven preschoolers registered in advance for the event, which was a good size for the first session.

“This was a nice starting point, because this was a brand-new program for the library and the township,” Rodriguez said.

Tables were set up with books of all levels for the children to choose from.

One child came with a parent, but most of the preschoolers came from Chesterbrook Academy with teacher Annabel Renteria.

Academy and read books about princesses and beaches. Tucker said all of her children and grandchildren are grown, so this offered a great way to

be with kids.

“I enjoy the enthusiasm and joy of reading with children. I want to pass on the love for reading books,” she

said.

Renteria said the students pushed themselves more in the reading department so they would be prepared to read to their buddy.

“We practiced this morning before we left school. I like reading to grandmas and grandpas because they might not be able to read very well,” said Rachel Krohn, 5.

Troy Township Supervisor Joseph D. Baltz said the program is great for the community and those involved.

“There is no better connection than a grandparent and a child. They are the sandwich and the middle is the generation [parents] working, so it’s great to be able to spend time with a grandparent,” Baltz said.

Attorneys seek court approval to drop Joliet in Evergreen Terrace case Letter under wraps

​By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The law firm that has represented Joliet in the 11-year-old Evergreen Terrace litigation wants to pull out of the case, citing “irreconcilable differences” in a motion filed in court last week.

The city appears ready to let them go.

Figliulo & Silverman is seeking to withdraw amid an investigation by the city into bills paid to the firm.

The motion filed in federal court Friday is the latest move in a conflict between the city and the law firm that developed when Mayor Bob O’Dekirk and Inspector General Chris Regis at a March 17 news conference suggested possible criminal issues regarding the firm’s rate increases over the course of the lawsuit.

The Joliet Police Department now is conducting an investigation into issues discussed in the inspector general’s report.

The city has paid nearly $5.5 million to Figliulo & Silverman. According to Regis’ report, rate increases accounted for $657,000 in the total bill.

Joliet could object to the firm’s withdrawal, but O’Dekirk recommended against it in light of the inspector general’s report.

The motion seeking withdrawal from the case states, “Irreconcilable differences have arisen between Joliet and the F&S [Figliulo & Silverman] Attorneys such that the F&S Attorneys believe that they are ethically required to cease their representation of Joliet and withdraw as counsel.”

The motion also states that Joliet never responded to a notice sent April 1 informing the city that the firm planned

to file to withdraw April 22 or later. The firm emailed Joliet’s corporate counsel April 26 asking if the city “would join in or agree to the motion” but never heard back.

Marty Shanahan, the city’s corporate counsel, said Figliulo & Silverman’s initial notice to the city was “cryptic.”

“The letter doesn’t outright say, ‘We are going to withdraw,’ ” Shanahan said The motion to withdraw is scheduled to be heard Friday in federal court. Shanahan said he did not know whether the city would send anyone to the hearing.

The letter from Figliulo & Silverman has never been made public.

City Manager Jim Hock said April 12 he would provide the letter to City Council members and the media. Later in the day, Hock said he could not release the letter because it had been turned over to Joliet police investigating the Evergreen Terrace matter.

Council members had said they had not seen the letter. Those interviewed before the council meeting Tuesday said they were not aware that Figliulo & Silverman had filed the motion to withdraw.

Some council members have said the city should stick with Figliulo & Silverman until the case is over because of the firm’s knowledge of the matter and success in the case.

It’s not clear how much legal work is left.

The city and Evergreen Terrace are waiting for a decision from an appellate court after the housing complex owners appealed decisions that allowed the city to condemn and take over the property for $15 million. The city expects a favorable ruling, but also has noted that Evergreen Terrace owners could appeal again to the U.S. Supreme Court.

O’Dekirk said it was possible that the Supreme Court would not hear the case, but recommended that the city hire local attorneys for any more litigation.

Joliet City Council approves vicious dog ordinance

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The city has a new ordinance regulating vicious dogs, although a few residents questioned whether it is strict enough.

The City Council on Tuesday passed the dog ordinance and also approved a partnership agreement with Holsten Real Estate Development Corp. on future management of Evergreen Terrace.

The dog ordinance got more attention, with residents saying the city still needs to go further to control dangerous animals.

“There is an extreme time gap between an incident and enforcement,” resident Robert Swanson said. He noted that a city hearing on a dog attack

“may not take place for several weeks after an incident occurs.”

Some council members agreed that the next test will be how effectively the city enforces the ordinance.

But they also noted the ordinance, along with a new intergovernmental agreement with Joliet Township Animal Control, actually spells out response times for incidents and gives the city authority to have dogs euthanized if they have killed or seriously injured a person or companion animal.

“At this point, I believe we have a much better ordinance and a much better intergovernmental agreement,” said Councilman Terry Morris, who heads the Land Use and Legislative Committee that held several meetings to develop the new regulations.

“We passed the ordinance knowing

full well that there would need to be some tweaking down the road,” said Councilwoman Jan Quillman, another member of the committee. “But we wanted to get something in place.”

The ordinance also provides for restitution for victims of dog attacks.

Resident Greg Hidlebaugh said the new regulations will do nothing for his situation. Hidlebaugh and his wife were attacked by two pit bulls in January in the Timber Edge Villas subdivision. His wife’s wrist was broken in the attack.

Mayor Bob O’Dekirk noted it would be illegal to create a new law that applied to past occurrences. But he and other city officials said the ordinance and new agreement with Joliet Township is aimed at addressing those past problems.

Evergreen Terrace

The council voted, 5-2, on a partnership agreement with Holsten for future management and redevelopment of Evergreen Terrace, the privately owned, subsidized housing complex. The city won a federal condemnation case to take over the complex but is awaiting the outcome of an appeal.

Voting no were Quillman and Larry Hug. The agreement will lead to the creation of a new corporation to be called Riverwalk Homes, which will be a 50-50 partnership between Joliet and Holsten to oversee management and redevelopment of Evergreen Terrace.

City Manager Jim Hock said Holsten will get 7 percent of gross income from Evergreen Terrace to manage the complex.

Sentencing hearing begins in 2009 Joliet knife attack

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A judge on Tuesday refused to grant a new trial to a man convicted of attempted murder after a 2009 knife attack on his ex-girlfriend in their Joliet home.

Defense attorney Chuck Bretz told Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak that jurors could’ve been instructed to consider finding Bradley M. Schlott, 48, guilty of ag- Bradley gravated battery before M. Schlott they deliberated March 2.

“After the slashing, he called 911, gave her first aid and made sure emergency personnel came into the residence,” Bretz said. “Removing that [instruction] from the jury gave them an all-or-nothing scenario.”

Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Tricia McKenna said Schlott “inflicted ... fatal wounds. The defendant didn’t save her life, the victim managed to talk him out of it as she was bleeding to death on the floor.”

Kimberly Hurschik and Schlott lived together for seven years in a West Side Joliet home. But Hurschik testified during the trial she’d been trying to end the relationship before March 12, 2009, when Schlott began punching her after she got out of the shower. When she tried to run out, he grabbed her by the hair, threw her to the ground and choked her before slicing her throat and cutting the side of her breast with a hunting knife.

Schlott called 911 and reported the stabbing and need for an ambulance but hung up when the dispatcher asked for his name. Hurschik then told Schlott to get rid of the knife and call 911 herself.

Schlott’s attorneys said his behavior was a side effect of anti-depression medication he had recently begun taking.

Hurschik attended but did not testify at the hearing. Prosecutor Marie Griffin read a statement Hurschik wrote to the judge.

Lincoln-Way bond rating plummets

NEW LENOX – Lincoln-Way School District 210’s general obligation bond rating has been dropped significantly after Moody’s downgraded it from A1 to Baa3.

The investors service also assigned the financially troubled district a negative outlook.

“The downgrade to Baa3 reflects the weakened financial position of the district, which has necessitated the issuance of tax anticipation warrants to support operations,” a statement issued Friday from Moody’s read.

“The rating also considers the recent discovery of misappropriation of bond proceeds and restricted funds, the resolution of which will exacerbate the district’s budget pressures.”

Superintendent Scott Tingley said about one-third – $30 million – of Lincoln-Way’s current budget consists of tax anticipation warrants, $5 million of which were issued last month to correct past improper accounting practices. Those practices were uncovered by an agreed-upon procedures examination of bond issuances from 2006, 2007

and 2009 that came out of a referendum that led to the construction of West and North high schools, as well as other improvements.

After issuing the $5 million, the school board later in April released a statement acknowledging and taking responsibility for the past fiscal improprieties.

“I anticipated a drop in our bond rating,” Tingley said, although he also noted that the decline by five Moody’s rating levels was a further step down than he’d expected.

According to Moody’s, the rating affects $259 million in outstanding debt, but Tingley said the change will have no impact on the district’s interest rates or amount owed for existing debt.

However, he said, with the new rating and the district’s current bond structure, Lincoln-Way can’t issue additional bonds.

Moody’s also attributed the low rating to the district’s declining tax base.

Faced with low enrollment and high deficits, the Lincoln-Way board voted in August to close North, a move met with widespread public outcry, including a lawsuit against the board. The district also is on the state’s financial



watch list.

Moody’s cited the opposition to North’s closure as one reason for assigning the negative outlook.

“The outlook further incorporates the district’s elevated debt burden and debt service costs, which are expected to rise considerably in fiscal 2021,” the Moody’s statement read.

In 2021, there is a scheduled increase in the bond amount owed by Lincoln-Way, unless it restructures before then, Tingley said.

He said he hopes next year when Moody’s re-evaluates the district’s rating, Lincoln-Way can paint a better financial picture.

“Next year we’ll be in a position to run a surplus,” Tingley said.

He specified that a surplus budget for the district would still include $30 million in tax anticipation warrants.

“We will be in a better financial position next year,” he said.

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media correspondent CHANNAHON – In a community known more for its baseball teams, rivers and peaceful neighborhoods than crime, Channahon Police Chief Jeff Wold said he’s seeing some troubling statistics in the village.

With 57 drug arrests so far this year, Channahon could be on track to double the number of its drug cases by the end of 2016. Other communities are seeing the trend, as well, Wold told village trustees Monday night.

But the village has been offered some help to quell the upswing before it becomes a trend. Wold said the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office has offered to buy a drug-sniffing K-9 unit for the

Channahon Police Department, along with the training of the dog and an officer.

Wold said Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow told him the county has money in its drug seizure fund to use to buy the dog.

“He’s looking to move sooner, rather than later on this,” Wold told trustees.

“It would be to keep drugs from taking further root here in our community.”

A drug detection dog, or sniffer dog, is trained to use its sense of smell to locate classes of illegal drugs. They are different from attack dogs, Wold explained, and so would be able to be taken to community events. The dog would also be used to perform school searches, a task that in the past has been done by K-9 units from other police de-

partments.

Village President Missey Moorman Schumacher said she would be in favor of the donation if the new program were to be cost neutral, as Channahon is currently dealing with a tight financial situation.

Wold said Glasgow has offered to fund not only the dog and training, but also to retrofit a squad car. A local veterinarian has offered to provide care for the dog, and Trustee Debbie Militello said some local businesses are considering chipping in for dog food.

Schumacher said that the village receives dollars from drug seizures, and a K-9 unit that helps with drug arrests could help with revenue for the program.

Board members gave the nod for

Wold to further investigate the matter and to bring it to the board for a vote at a future meeting.

“It’s important to send the message that our village is serious about this,” Trustee Chantal Host said.

Also at Monday’s meeting, the owner of The Office Bar and Grill, on South Pheasant Lane in Channahon, came before the board to ask about getting an outdoor area at the bar. Most of the board was in favor of allowing outdoor dining, but Schumacher said village liquor ordinances would likely have to be altered. Staff was asked to look into the matter and come back before the board with more information.

Trustees also approved hiring Jeff Barrett as water operator for an annual salary of $56,138.

All registered voters in Will County to receive new voter ID cards JOLIET – Will County Clerk Nancy Schultz Voots announced Tuesday that all registered Will County voters will be receiving a new voter identification card by mail at the end of May.

By law, the Will County Clerk’s Office is required to issue a new voter identification card to each registered voter every two years, according to a news release from her office.

Voter ID cards list each voter’s township and precinct, polling place and the

No injuries in Crest Hill attic fire

At 1:22 p.m., a passer-by saw smoke coming from the roof of a home in the 21300 block of Renwick Road and called 911, Lockport Township Fire Protection District Chief Dave Skoryi said.

Renwick Road was closed from

Gaylord Road to Grand Haven Boulevard as firefighters battled the blaze.

Crews were able to extinguish the fire in 30 minutes, Skoryi said.

“My guys did a real great job,” he said.

No one was home at the time of the fire, which started in the attic.

The house sustained smoke and water damage throughout.

Romeoville and Plainfield fire agencies assisted in responding to the fire.

BERWYN – A Plainfield woman was charged Thursday with manufacturing and selling drugs out of an apartment in the 6200 block of 21st Street in Berwyn, according to a news release from a west suburban drug task force.

Heather A. Niemotka, 41, of the 23000 block of West Hickory Lane, Plainfield, was working as the caregiver for a 59-year-old woman who lived in Heather A. the apartment, where Niemotka police officers from the West Suburban Enhanced Drug Gang Enforcement Task Force recovered 70 grams of cocaine, 17 grams of marijuana, hydrocodone pills, drug packaging materials and more than $1,000 in cash marked as proceeds from narcotics sales, the news release stated.

Niemotka was charged with manufactured delivery of cocaine, possession of cocaine, manufactured

delivery of marijuana, unlawful possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to the news release.

The investigation began two days earlier Randy T. when Riverside police Pafford received a tip from a confidential informant, the news release stated.

Also charged as a result of the investigation was the apartment resident’s boyfriend, Randy T. Pafford, 54, also of the 6200 block of 21st Street, Berwyn. Pafford was charged with one count of possession of a controlled substance, a Class 4 felony, according to the news release.

As part of the deal for using the apartment, Niemotka would give cocaine to the woman who lived in the apartment. However, Riverside Police Chief and WEDGE Chairman Thomas Weitzel said in the news release that the resident did not have the full capacity to understand what was taking place.

Yolanda Camacho, 62, passed away Thursday, April 28, 2016, at Grace Healthcare of Clarksville.

She was born Nov. 5, 1953, in Joliet, and was preceded in death by her parents, Eliazar and Marina DeLeon Camacho.

Ms. Camacho was a Baptist.

She is survived by her brothers, Fred Camacho and Eliazar Camacho Jr.; sisters, Isabel Shiltz, Mary Ellen Black and Josie Unsell.

Yolanda is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A U.S. Navy veteran serving two tours of duty during WWII and the Korean War. Retired from Northern Illinois Gas as a crew leader following 42 years of service. A member of

Jamie L. Katro, age 38, of Joliet, passed away suddenly on April 30, 2016. Jamie attended Lockport High School and was employed by Dollar Tree Distribution Center in Elwood. Jamie is remembered by her relatives, friends and co-workers as a very caring person who went out of her way to help people in need.

Jamie is survived by her loving wife, Traci Katro; mother, JoEllyn Vetter; father, Randy (Evonne) Katro; grandmother, Edith Flagg; sisters, Sandy (Brian) Little and Melani Granda; brothers, Jeremy (Jessica) Katro and Michael Coleman; as well as several beloved aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She survives along with one daughter, Patricia Mensendike of Crest Hill; three sons, John McClelland of Joliet, Scotty McClelland of Romeoville and Jimmy McClelland and wife Kathy of Joliet; one stepdaughter, Sharee Santorineos of Rushville; one stepson, Thomas Hillard of Wilmington; one sister, Betsy Bridgewater and husband, Tom of Liberty; one brother, Edward McClelland and wife, Genelle of Macomb; and one sister-in-law, Millie McClelland of Versailles.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Doris Bedenbender, Mildred McClelland, infant, and Patricia Ann McClelland; one brother, Donald McClelland; one son-in-law, Gene Mensendike; one sister-in-law, Patricia Sowers McClelland; and one nephew, Wesley McClelland.

He graduated from Brown County High School in 1953. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was baptized in the Mount Sterling Christian Church in 1949 and was a member of the First Church of Christ in Springfield. He was a captain with the Illinois Department of Corrections in Joliet and was a truck driver for Lockport Trucking, Rushville Truck Lines & L & N Industries.

There will be no services. Inurnment will be at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Ellwood at a later date.

Chicago students can use bathrooms by gender ID

By SOPHIA TAREEN The Associated Press CHICAGO – Chicago Public Schools will allow transgender students and employees to use bathrooms and locker rooms corresponding to their gender identities, according to guidelines released Tuesday by the nation’s third-largest school district.

The policy, which also applies to “gender nonconforming students,” covers all education opportunities, including overnight field trips, and allows for alternative arrangements if requested, such as a single-stall restroom or separate changing schedule.

“CPS, like much of the country, has become far more aware of the needs and

experiences of the transgender community, and it’s crucial for CPS guidelines to reflect our commitment to promoting safe and inclusive schools,” district Chief Education Officer Janice Jackson said in a statement.

The issue of which bathrooms transgender people use has become a focus in the national debate over anti-discrimination laws. North Carolina recently enacted a controversial law requiring transgender people to use bathrooms in state government buildings and public schools that match the gender on their birth certificates. Meanwhile, other major school districts – including New York and Los Angeles – already have student policies similar to Chicago’s.

Last month, a Los Angeles high school

opened the district’s first gender-neutral bathroom.

Chicago officials said the updated guidelines build on 2014 policy requiring schools to provide transgender students and gender nonconforming students with the same opportunities to participate in physical education, sexual health education, sports, clubs and school events. Under the new rules, administrators at schools will make confidential “support plans” for each student. School officials consulted legal and medical experts in writing the guidelines and said individual accommodations will be considered on a caseby-case basis. Students will also have the right to be addressed by a name and pronoun “corresponding to the gen-

der identity they consistently assert at school.”

Advocacy groups, including Equality Illinois, praised the move Tuesday as a way to promote equality.

However, the issue has generated opposition in Illinois before. Some parents protested in suburban Chicago when a transgender student, who was born male, sought girls’ locker room access.

The girl filed a grievance with the U.S. Department of Education’s civil-rights office after being denied unrestricted access. Federal officials found the district violated the student’s rights under Title IX and last year reached an agreement for her to use the locker room. The district has since put privacy stalls in both the girls and boys locker rooms.

JOHN L. SITAR JR. John L. Sitar Jr., age 77, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 1, 2016, with his loving family by his side.

John is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Beverly (nee Allison); children, Karen (Mike) Nawa and Jennifer (Brian) Errthum; grandchildren, Maggie and Matthew Nawa and Joe and Allison Errthum; sister-in-law, Kathleen (the late Robert) Sitar; numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his parents, John and Helen (nee Moholick) Sitar; brother, Robert L. Sitar; and nephew, John F. Sitar.

John was born and raised in Joliet and started playing music professionally at the young age of 16. After graduating from Joliet Catholic Academy and attaining an associate degree from Joliet Junior College, John joined the U.S. Navy in 1963 and was honorably discharged in 1965. He was best known for his music and owned and operated Sitar’s Music and Electronics from 1972 until 2012. John’s greatest passion was entertaining all different generations of people and teaching countless students the art of music. He was a member of the St. Bernard Catholic Church Parish in Joliet.

John will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Joseph John Wrona Jr., age 62. Passed away Saturday, April 30, 2016, at his home.

Born in Joliet on Dec. 6, 1953, to the late Joseph and Dolores (nee Kezele) Wrona. A graduate of Minooka High School and attended Joliet Junior College. Joe worked as an operational manager for Schneider National for over 20 years, which relocated him and his family to Rochester, MN, for eight years and then to Green Bay, WI, in 1992. Joe moved back home to Channahon in 2000, where he resided until his passing.

Joe had a great love for music. He picked up the accordion at a young age and taught himself how to play. Joe and his father played in a polka band, where they performed at many weddings. Joe attended many concerts and carried his love for music until the day he died.

He loved camping and especially fishing with his family. He also loved golfing and bowling with his friends and family. Joe, above all else, was a caring soul, who always put his family

By JULIE PACE and SCOTT BAUER The Associated Press INDIANAPOLIS – In a stunning triumph for a political outsider, Donald Trump all but clinched the Republican presidential nomination Tuesday with a resounding victory in Indiana that knocked rival Ted Cruz out of the race and cleared Trump’s path to a likely November face-off with Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton.

Trump still needs about 200 delegates to formally secure the nomination, but Cruz’s decision to end his campaign removed his last major obstacle.

“Ted Cruz – I don’t know if he likes me or he doesn’t like me – but he is one hell of a competitor,” Trump said of his last fierce competitor whom he had dubbed “lyin’ Ted.” Trump, in a victory speech that was much lower-key than usual, promised victory in November, vowing anew to put “America first.”

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders eked out a victory over Clinton in Indiana, but the outcome will not slow the former secretary of state’s march to the Democratic nomination. Heading into Tuesday’s voting, Clinton had 92 percent of the delegates she needs.

“I know that the Clinton campaign thinks this campaign is over. They’re wrong,” Sanders said defiantly in an interview Tuesday night. But Clinton already has turned her attention to the general election.

She and Trump now plunge into a six-month battle for the presidency, with the future of America’s immigration laws, health care system and military posture around the world at stake.

While Clinton heads into the general election with significant advantages with minority voters and women, Democrats have vowed to not underestimate Trump as his

For months, Republican leaders considered him a fringe candidate and banked on voters shifting toward more traditional contenders once the primary contests began. But Trump proved to be surprisingly durable, tapping into Republicans’ deep anger with party leaders and outlasting more than a dozen experienced political rivals.

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus declared the race over, saying on Twitter that Trump would be the party’s presumptive nominee.

“We all need to unite and focus on defeating @HillaryClinton,” he wrote.

Indeed, Trump’s first challenge will be uniting a Republican Party that has been roiled by his candidacy.

While some GOP leaders have warmed to the real estate mogul, others have promised to never vote for him and see him as a threat to their party’s very existence.

Even before the Indiana results were finalized, some

conservative leaders were planning a Wednesday meeting to assess the viability of launching a third party candidacy to compete with him in the fall.

One outside group trying to stop Trump suggested it would shift its attention to helping Republicans in other races. Rory Cooper, a senior adviser to the Never Trump super PAC, said the group will help protect “Republican incumbents and down-ballot candidates, by distinguishing their values and principles from that of Trump, and protecting them from a wave election.”

Indiana was viewed as the last gasp for Cruz, the fiery Texas conservative. He campaigned aggressively in the state, securing the support of Indiana’s governor and announcing businesswoman Carly Fiorina as his running mate, but lost momentum in the closing days.

Cruz had clung to the hope that he could keep Trump from reaching the 1,237 delegates needed for the nomination and push the race to a rare contested convention.

U.S. combat death in Iraq reflects intensifying war

By ROBERT BURNS and SUSANNAH GEORGE The Associated Press STUTTGART, Germany – The combat death of a U.S Navy SEAL who was advising Kurdish forces in Iraq coincides with a gradually deepening American role in fighting a resilient Islamic State, even as the Iraqis struggle to muster the military and political strength to defeat the militants.

Over the course of the nearly 2-yearold campaign, the Pentagon has slowly expanded the American military role.

The strategy, criticized by some as incremental and inadequate, aims to ensure that the Iraqis do the ground combat, supported by U.S. airpower, special operations advisers and others.

As the Iraqis have gained competence and confidence and prepared an assault in hopes of retaking Mosul, the Pentagon has announced plans to put more U.S. troops in Iraq and place them closer to the front lines.

In Defense Secretary Ash Carter’s view, that means a greater chance for success. It also means more risk to U.S. troops, as he acknowledged Tuesday in announcing the latest death, the third of an American service member in combat in Iraq since the U.S.-led coalition launched its campaign against the Islamic State in the summer of 2014.

“It shows you it’s a serious fight that we have to wage in Iraq,” Carter said.

The SEAL was identified Tuesday as Charlie Keating IV, 31, who grew up in Phoenix and attended the Naval Acad-

emy before becoming a SEAL based out of Coronado, California. Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey said Keating died in an Islamic State group attack near the city of Irbil.

Seven months ago, a special operations soldier, 39-year-old Master Sgt. Joshua L. Wheeler, was killed during a Kurdish-led raid on an Islamic State prison in northern Iraq. In March, a Marine artilleryman, Staff Sgt. Louis F. Cardin, 27, was killed when the militants launched a rocket attack on a newly established U.S. firebase outside Mosul.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest said President Barack Obama had been briefed on the incident and extended condolences to Keating’s family.

Earnest said the incident was a “vivid reminder” of the dangers facing U.S. troops in Iraq and Syria.

“They are taking grave risks to protect our country. We owe them a deep debt of gratitude,” Earnest said.

Keating’s death coincides with diverging trends in Iraq. On one hand, Iraqi forces trained and advised by Americans have scored significant battlefield gains in recent months, including the recapture of Ramadi and other advances against IS-held towns in Anbar province. On the other hand, political conflict in Baghdad fed by sectarian rivalry is threatening to derail the entire effort.

Carter said on Monday that as the Iraqis gain battlefield momentum, the Pentagon will pursue additional ways to support them. Recently that has meant

The risk can be expected to grow if, as planned, the U.S. sends Apache attack helicopters into battle in support of an Iraqi assault on Mosul in coming months. The U.S. also has committed to sending more mobile artillery as part of that effort and to providing up to $415 million in support of the Kurds in northern Iraq. Obama recently authorized an increase in the number of troops that can deploy to Iraq to advise and assist Iraqi forces. The cap was increased last week from 3,870 to 4,087.

The U.S. also has announced it will increase the number of special operations forces in Syria from 50 to 300.

As described by an Iraqi Kurdish intelligence officer, Lt. Col. Manav Do-

sky, Tuesday’s Islamic State attack was launched on Teleskof, about 14 miles north of Mosul, just after 6 a.m. The Islamic State broke through the Kurds’ front-line position with a barrage of armored Humvees and bulldozers, Dosky said, and clashes killed at least three Kurdish peshmerga fighters. Keating was among Americans advising the peshmerga during that battle.

Maj. Gen. Jaber Yawer, a Kurdish peshmerga spokesman, told The Associated Press that the American was killed

by IS sniper fire during an IS attack that also involved a number of car bombs.

A U.S. defense official, speaking on the condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to discuss the incident publicly, said the SEAL was killed with small arms fire, suggesting that Islamic State fighters likely came within a few hundred yards of the U.S. forces.

The Americans were 2 to 3 miles behind that front line before the attack was launched, the official added.

American forces will continue to stay behind the front lines, the defense official said, but he acknowledged that the U.S. expects more ground fighting as the Iraqi and Kurdish militaries, backed by the U.S., push farther into Islamic State-controlled territory.

SPRINGFIELD – Like many of you, I received my annual property tax bill in the mail this past week and cringed.

My wife and I bought our dream home a decade ago, when our oldest daughter was just a baby and her two sisters were just dreams to fill empty bedrooms.

Despite the joy of living in a home we love, we are reminded every year we never will truly own it.

Even though we paid for it, we have to give money to the government to hang on to what is “ours.”

And in Illinois, this predicament is more acute than anywhere else.

In fact, this year the Land of Lincoln edged out New Jersey to become the state that taxes property owners the highest.

That’s not good for families. It’s not good for neighborhoods. And it certainly is not good for our state’s economy.

With all things being otherwise equal, would you choose to build a new business in a state where you will be taxed at a property tax rate higher than just about anywhere else?

I didn’t think so.

You’ll hear plenty of malarkey from government worker unions

The property tax bills we are receiving this month are a testament to the falsehood of those claims.

Not only are Illinois property taxes exorbitant, they are an integral part of an immoral system in Cook County in which business owners are forced to hire politically connected lawyers to get their property tax bills reduced.

And guess what? The most politically connected lawyer of them all is House Speaker Michael Madigan. He has become a wealthy man handling Cook County property tax appeals.

Is it any wonder property tax reform has yet to arrive in Illinois?

As my former Illinois Policy Institute colleague Ted Dabrowski notes, property taxes rose at three times the rate of family incomes from 1990 to 2014.

That’s not a recipe for making families more prosperous.

Or the state of Illinois, for that matter.

When I look at my own property tax bill, I see a need for reform.

Most of my property taxes go to a rural school district that has limited curriculum options for students. It’s just too small to serve the students well. It needs to merge with a neighboring district, but it has failed to do so.

There is an old saying in Illinois: The hardest animal to kill is a school mascot.

That’s why Florida a slightly geographically larger state and the home of 6.6 million more people has 74 school districts, while the Land of Lincoln has 970.

In fact, Illinois ranks first in the nation for the number of local governments.

There isn’t a stadium – or prison – in the state capable of holding all of our elected officials.

If we are serious about containing taxes, consolidating and eliminating local governments is essential.

Democrat and Republican politicians have been giving this lip service for decades.

But little has happened.

Both political parties have vested interests in maximizing the number of boards and councils their people can be elected to.

Illinois’ open spigot of tax dollars pouring into local governments has made bureaucrats far too comfortable. They have little incentive to seek consolidation with other entities and have become complacent with the status quo.

It’s time to freeze the state’s property taxes.

Sadly, there are many in the Legislature who say residents of this state don’t pay enough in taxes.

You’ll hear their voices often when there is a push to jack up the income tax or when they call for a tax hike on small business owners.

When they make their arguments, they don’t mention the extraordinary property tax burden already borne by the state’s residents and businesses.

When you sign your check to the local tax collector, ask yourself if you’re getting your money’s worth.

If you are like me and find the answer is “no,” pick up the phone and call your lawmakers and let them know it’s time for a property tax freeze.

At mealtime, just carry your precious bouquets around the dinning room and let everyone enjoy the sweetest fragrance in the world. It brings back so many memories of childhood – and tears as well. I’ve done it, and believe me, it’s true.

So hurry out and do it. Don’t wait.

If you have no lilac bush of your own, just cruise around town until you find one. Pull over, knock on a door, and ask this lucky person if you can please have a bouquet to share.

“His fastball was some of the best I have seen,” Garner’s catcher, Jake Dunham, said Tuesday after the Southwest Prairie-leading Tigers blanked South, 3-0, in the opener of this week’s three-game series. “It was tailing like I have never seen it.

“He was throwing his 12-to-6 curve real well and we broke out the change for the first time, too.”

Why the tailing action on the fastball?

“I don’t know,” Garner said. “Usually I get some movement, but today it was moving really nice.”

“Maybe it was the wind,” Dunham suggested.

Whatever the reason, Garner (6-1) said he “probably threw the best I have all year.” He allowed four hits, walked one and hit one. The Cougars (16-6, 8-5) left only four runners as Dunham gunned down two on the bases and the infield for North (17-2, 12-1) turned a 4-6-3 double play to end the sixth inning, the only inning where South got a runner past first base.

“Jake (Dunham) did a great job

framing my pitches and he threw out the two guys on the bases,” Garner noted. “And the double play (from second baseman Anthony Agne to shortstop Zach Jarosz to first baseman Josh Heckman) was big.”

North scored what turned out to be the decisive run in the first inning when Jarosz doubled to left and, with one out, Dunham doubled into the leftfield corner to make it 1-0.

Agne doubled leading off the third for the first of his two solid hits. One out later, Justin Yeager singled him home to give Garner a two-run cushion.

Garner decided one more run would be enough. He launched a sixth-inning

home run over the right-center field fence off South starter and loser Konnor Ash (6-3) to account for the final score.

“I saw something I liked and hit it well,” Garner said of his second homer of the season.

Ash allowed six hits and five were directly related to Tigers’ runs. North stranded only three runners.

“Konnor Ash is a tough pitcher,” Dunham said. “I’ve done some work with him in the offseason. It was nice to beat him and beat South. A series like this has the same feel as the postseason.”

momentum from them. We felt confident going in because we’ve had a really good season, so we felt like we were going to jump on them early and then kept scoring runs.

“I think this year, we have by far the best defensive team that we’ve had.

We played really good defense today and didn’t let them take the momentum from us, which was important.

The thing that I like the most about our team is that we like to stay loose and know that we can come out on top, no matter what the situation is. And we all click together pretty well.”

Mackenzie Miller (2 for 4) doubled to open the Tigers’ second, and following a sacrifice by Greta Thompson, Miller scored when Siwek reached on an error. North added another run in the fifth when Kitchell reached on an infield hit, moved to second when Kruzel walked and came home after Miller reached on an infield hit that was followed by an error.

“Give all of the credit to them, but we have to execute and play with confidence and we didn’t do that today,” Wildcats coach Anne Campbell said.

“When we execute and play our game, then we’re successful. Brooklyn (Daly)

pitched decent and had nine strikeouts and when we play defense behind her, this team is very good. We’ve struggled all year finding consistency and confidence in ourselves, and if we can figure it out, then they can do something.”

The Wildcats finally got something going in the fifth when they scored both of their runs and collected half of their hits. Maria Connell (2 for 3) started things with a single and Bri Blaskey walked before Sammi Newtoff reached on a fielder’s choice. Courtney Polanski singled in courtesy runner Avery Medina and Sara Peterson singled to score Newtoff.

North got a run back in the sixth when Kitchell hit a blooper to score Siwek. After yielding a leadoff single in the bottom of that frame, Kruzel retired the final six hitters in order.

“After we got the three runs, everyone settled down and we all played together as a team,” Kruzel said. “This year we’ve been doing so much better since we’re playing more as a team.

We’re communicating better and not getting down when we’re losing. We’re a pretty young team, but we’re really close and get along really well. This season has been really fun.”

“You put the ball in play enough, it helps,” North coach John Darlington said. “We did just enough offensively to get it done. But I thought we were putting some good swings on the ball.”

Garner and Dunham, meanwhile, gave the Tigers the kind of effort Darlington said you expect from seniors.

“That’s two experienced seniors,” he said. “Garner got ahead in the count all day, and Dunham did a nice job. It was a good win.”

Jarosz, the shortstop and another of North’s senior leaders, not only was the middle man in the key double play, but he also ended the game with a catch of a pop foul down the left-field line.

“That’s an experienced team, almost all seniors on the field,” South coach Phil Bodine said of the Tigers. “Almost every kid of mine is a junior. We’re a good team, but we’re still young and growing. We’re still learning.”

Dunham blocked a low pitch before throwing to second to nail Nick Mayerhofer, who was hit by a pitch to open the bottom of the sixth.

“To me that wasn’t a mistake on his (Mayerhofer’s) part,” Bodine said. “It’s what we teach, being aggressive.

But it’s situational. That was a situation where you have to stay home.”

Garner threw 92 pitches, and the Cougars struck out six times. The game took 1 hour, 21 minutes to complete as Ash also was on target, throwing 100 pitches, striking out five and walking nobody.

“He is a very good pitcher,” Bodine said of Garner. “He’s not overpowering, but he really spotted his fastball.

“Our hitters have to do a better job, though, of lifting the ball to the right side and pulling it when the situation demands, the way their hitters did. We have to do a better job of manipulating the ball.”

PLAINFIELD – It was just the type of start a team battling for first place in a conference seeks when it meets a perennial contender fighting to stay alive in league play.

Plainfield North’s softball team jumped out to a 3-0 lead just four batters into Tuesday’s Southwest Prairie Conference game at Plainfield Central, and that fast start proved to be the difference in its 6-2 victory.

Carolyn Hett tripled in Lexie Siwek and Krista Ferry and then scored on a grounder by Emily Kitchell to highlight the opening inning.

The Tigers (14-4, 8-1) maintain at least a share of the SPC lead heading into Thursday’s showdown with rival Plainfield East.

North, which spread its 11 hits out over each inning, scored another run in the second to provide a quick boost for starter Abby Kruzel, who tossed a six-hitter and only allowed the Wildcats (12-8, 5-4) to score in one inning, at which point her team owned a 5-0 lead.

“The top five hitters in our lineup have been overly consistent and we

really rely on them to get us going,” Tigers coach Allison Wodziak said.

“We talked to our players about this being probably our best group effort in a while where someone somewhere in our lineup did something. It’s not often that you can get one through nine to be productive like that.

“This is the most defensively-sound team that we’ve had in my five years.

And while we maybe aren’t the most mechanically adroit, if you will, everyone on that field is willing to lay out for a ball and to do their best to knock it down, and that’s more than you can ask for. This group is quirky and fun.

They’re all on the same page and ready to go and ready to win.”

In the first, Siwek (2 for 5) reached on an error and Ferry (2 for 5) got on with a bunt single before Hett (2 for 3, two RBIs) lined one down the third base line that got past the left fielder for a triple. Kitchell (2 for 4, two RBIs) followed with a groundout and the Tigers owned a 3-0 lead.

“We wanted to win really badly over Central, so I thought it was really important to get on top,” Hett said. “It felt good to get a nice, inside pitch and to drive it and get a score early to take the

Tuesday night, the Providence community came together there to remember sophomore football player Charlie Dunne.

Dunne, 16, died Tuesday after suffering an acute asthma attack.

“He just loved being part of the team,” Charlie’s father, Mike Dunne, told the crowd.

Charlie played on the defensive and offensive lines for the Providence sophomore team, and as his teammates, classmates and family came together to remember him, they said six Hail Marys and three Our Fathers, in honor of his number – 63.

“Just being a Providence football player means, he’s one of us,” varsity football coach Mark Coglianese said.

Those in attendance shared a sign of peace – some hugging, some crying and others exchanging quiet words – as the Rev. John Merkelis, pastoral director at Providence, encouraged them to grieve with a sense of hope.

That sense of community was clear in the more than 500 who attended a Mass for Charlie earlier in the day Tuesday at Providence and again in the grotto that evening, where Mike Dunne reminded those present that Providence is a family of which they all are members.

Family friends remembered Charlie as funny and upbeat.

“He was a real goofy kid, always joking around,” said Matt Iaciancio, a recent Providence graduate who was also Dunne’s eighth-grade confirmation sponsor.

After several minutes of conversation, hugs and tears, the crowd again came together, singing the Celtics’ fight song for Charlie.

WILMINGTON – Eddie Wilkins (4-0) and Jordan Walden (5-3) threw dominating back-to-back performances for Reed-Custer in the Interstate Eight victories over Wilmington.

Wilkins fanned 10 and allowed two hits and one run in Tuesday’s 11-1 win and Walden allowed two hits and one walk while striking out four in Monday’s 11-0 victory.

Justin Weitzel (2 for 2), Josh Loomis and Dan Fierro each had two RBIs and Travis Schoonover (four steals) and Weitzel (three steals) combined for seven of the Comets’ nine steals.

Brent Headrick and Weitzel each had two RBIs for the Comets (16-4, 9-2).

Providence splits: Drew Hunniford had two hits in an 11-2 loss to St. Laurence. Matt Gruszkowski drove in two runs and Jackson Stulas had two hits for the Celtics (17-5, 9-3) in their 7-2 Catholic Blue victory Monday over Marmion.

“Counting the exhibition games, I believe that’s 10 games in 12 days,” Isom said. “We will be able to evaluate these young guys and see what they are able to do in game situations.”

Some of the bigger names the Slammers were planning to have will be missing, at least early on.

Pitcher Matt Hopgood, the former first-round draft pick of the Baltimore Orioles, is dealing with inflammation in his shoulder. Slugger and former Cubs prospect Rock Shoulders is dealing with a family matter and has not arrived yet.

Yet, Isom said he feels “comfortable with our starting nine. But we have decisions to make on the 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th spots, and there are question marks on the pitching staff.

But again, those aren’t necessarily bad questions, just a matter of professional experience more than anything.”

The potential starting rotation could include Spencer Medick, Luke Crumley and David Carver. Crumley has not arrived yet but is expected in soon. Carver is a left-hander who pitched in the Milwaukee Brewers She struck out two and allowed no hits.

Marc Flores, who probably will man first base for starters, came to Joliet late last season and showed good power.

“I like that,” Isom said. “We needed some power.”

Infielder Carter Bell, another player who came to the Slammers late in 2015, is back. So is infielder Jake Gronsky, who played in seven games over nine days here in 2014 before being picked up by the St. Louis Cardinals. Bell and Gronsky are likely to open at third and second base, in either configuration.

Switch-hitting catcher Joe Staley, who provided some power after his in-season arrival last summer, is back.

“He catches a nice game, too,” Isom said.

In the outfield, centerfielder Charlie White is healthy “and will be a spark plug in the leadoff spot,” Isom said. “Phil Bates had a nice rookie year last year and is back in left field.

we have some options.”

Isom said he is eager to manage the offensive end of the game because he has players who seem to fit his offensive personality.

“I have a feeling we will play an exciting brand of ball on the offensive end,” he said. “I already can see that these guys take pride in running balls out, in putting pressure on the defense.

“We have five guys who possibly could get 20-plus steals. I love managing the game when you can put pressure on the defense.”

When we talked about a month ago, manager Jeff Isom predicted the Joliet Slammers would be a playoff team this season.

At the conclusion of the Slammers’ practice Tuesday at Silver Cross Field, we sat down in the dugout to discuss how things look now that most of the roster members have been together for about a week.

“I’m sticking with that comment,” he said. “We’re a playoff team.

“Now, you may come back to me in midseason and say, ‘What were you thinking?’ But the reason I feel that way is the quality of work these guys are putting in. That’s why I think something special could happen.”

The Slammers have not been to the Frontier League playoffs since they won the league championship in 2011, their first season. And this year’s pitching staff, at least at this juncture, is lacking professional experience overall.

Isom said that is not necessarily a bad thing.

“We have guys on the staff who want to work to get better,” he said.

“That’s exciting.”

The Slammers begin their exhibition schedule at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Schaumburg. They are at Normal on Thursday morning, at Windy City on Saturday afternoon and home to face Windy City on Monday and Tuesday afternoon.

Arrieta handcuffs Pirates, improves to 6-0

By WILL GRAVES The Associated Press PITTSBURGH – Seven months later, the Pittsburgh Pirates still can’t hit Jake Arrieta.

Then again, they’re hardly the only ones.

The Cubs ace scattered two hits in seven shutout innings in a 7-1 victory that looked more than a little like Arrieta’s dominant performance in an NL wild-card playoff win at PNC Park last October. Arrieta (6-0) allowed only singles to Sean Rodriguez in the second and Francisco Cervelli in the seventh, striking out five and walking two while lowering his ERA to 0.84. He became the second six-game winner in the major leagues after Chris Sale of the White Sox. “He struggled early, then once he finds out where the ball is going, everything takes off for him,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. “He’s going to keep going down this path with his skill and the way he works.”

“We had some good at-bats right out of the shoot,” Maddon said. “We did some good things early. We put them a bit on their heels and that’s always important in a game like tonight.”

Jon Niese (3-1) gave up six runs and nine hits over five innings while losing for the first time since the Pirates acquired him from the Jake Arrieta New York Mets in an offseason trade.

Two starts removed from his second career no-hitter, Arrieta kept on going. His only real trouble spot came in the first, when he issued consecutive walks to John Jaso and Andrew McCutchen. A strikeout, a fielder’s choice and a harmless grounder back to the mound later, Arrieta had his bearings.

The Pirates could do little to stop him even with manager Clint Hurdle using

an unorthodox lineup that included Matt Joyce in right field thanks in large part to his career .500 batting average (7 for 14) against Arrieta.

Yet, the last time Joyce faced Arrieta was in 2013, when Arrieta was struggling in Baltimore.

Not anymore.

“He’s facing a different guy now,” Arrieta said.

Joyce went 0 for 3 with Arrieta in the game and Pittsburgh didn’t get a runner over his final six innings.

“He doesn’t get out of his zone,” Joyce said. “I read after the game that this was the first time in his career he walked the first two hitters in a game, but it didn’t faze him one bit. He wasn’t upset with himself.

He wasn’t frustrated. It’s pretty amazing stuff.”

The Cubs have won each of Arrieta’s past 19 starts. He became the first Cubs pitcher to win each of his first six starts in a season since Mordecai Brown won his first 11 starts in 1908, which is also the last time the Cubs won the World Series.

Sox release veteran pitcher Danks

By DARYL VAN SCHOUWEN dvanshouwen@suntimes.com The White Sox abruptly cut the cord Tuesday with John Danks, a popular teammate and wellpaid starting pitcher, but an ineffective one who, as he forlornly put it himself after the last of his four bad 2016 starts, was nothing more than a drag on the White Sox April express.

Danks will be designated for assignment and replaced, at least tentatively, by Triple-A righthander Erik Johnson in the starting rotation Thursday. Danks (0-4, 7.25 ERA) lost four games for a team that lost eight through an 18-8 start that left everyone from the clubhouse to the front office to Las Vegas oddsmakers brimming with confidence in after the Sox compiled the highest number of wins in the American League against a tough part of their April schedule that included 19 straight games and 16 of 26 in April on the road.

“We’ve got an opportunity to do something special here,’’ general manager Rick Hahn said.

“Every win is going to matter this season.’’

Hence the release of Danks and the $11.8 million he’ll get paid in the final months of his fiveyear, $65 million contract earned by pitching to a 3.77 ERA over a four-year stretch from 2008 to ’11.

In three full seasons after his shoulder surgery, Danks’ fastball was a few miles an hour lower and his ERA a full point higher. He was working with an 87-mph fastball this year.

“He’s a competitor and he wanted to contribute at the big league level but there was a sense of frustration and disappointment from John,’’ Hahn said. “At the same time he understood completely where we were coming from.’’

3 tips for an improved, easier Mother’s Day morning

By MELISSA D’ARABIAN The Associated Press Breakfast in bed is a love language in our home. Anytime there is a special occasion to celebrate – a birthday, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, whatever – the rest of the family follows an unspoken agreement to meet early in the kitchen to craft a breakfast-in-bed tray. I’m always first to the kitchen, and as I get the project rolling my daughters show up one at a time, bleary-eyed and clutching handmade crafts or cards and some flowers picked from the garden.

As the team leader for many of the breakfasts our family has orchestrated over the years, I’ve developed a few best practices. And my No. 1 tip: Do the bulk of the work the night before.

Overnight breakfast recipes are key.

The (critical) decorating of the tray with small kiddos sucks up a surprising amount of time, leaving precious little space for complex recipe execution in the morning.

Tip No. 2: Serve something a little special. Stepping outside the routine breakfast menu has incredible power to make the whole morning feel like a party.

Tip No. 3: Keep in mind the logistics of eating off a tray while mostly reclined in bed. Cereal, aside from breaking rule No. 2, is just about impossible to eat in bed without spilling.

And while you don’t need to be limited to finger food, think twice before getting too cozy with messy and liquid-based meal ideas. (It takes weeks for the smell of maple syrup to leave a comforter after a serious spill. ) So what dish covers all these bases?

And is healthy? Egg strata, which layers bread, eggs, meat and veggies all in one dish. I make mine in a muffin tin, which results in perfect portioning, pretty presentation and the flexibility to pick up breakfast with your hands or use a fork and knife. I use white whole-grain bread and a combination of eggs and egg whites to keep the nutrient profile reasonable. So even your morning breakfast party can boost your day with protein and fiber.

Easy Overnight Individual Egg Strata Start to finish: 45 minutes, plus overnight chilling Servings: 8

8 slices of white whole-grain bread

2 small breakfast sausage links or 1 large link chicken sausage, mild or spicy (uncooked), casings removed 1 clove garlic, minced 1/2 cup finely chopped button or mixed mushrooms 4 ounces frozen chopped spinach, thawed and excess liquid squeezed out 1/4 cup (2 ounces) light cream cheese 1/4 cup salsa 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 2 whole eggs 2 egg whites 3/4 cup low-fat milk Kosher salt and ground black pepper 2 medium tomatoes, cut into 8 thin slices 1/4 cup shredded Gruyere, Swiss or cheddar cheese Cut the crusts off the bread, then cut the crusts into 1/2-inch cubes and set aside.

Use the palm of your hand to lightly press the slices of bread flat, making them thin and a little doughy. Coat the cups of a muffin pan with cooking spray, then gently press 1 slice into each cup, creating 8 little crusts. Set aside.

In a medium sauté pan over medium-high, cook the sausage, crumbling with a spoon, until no longer pink, about 4 minutes. Add

the garlic and mushrooms and cook until fragrant, about another minute. Add the spinach, cream cheese and salsa, then cook for another 2 minutes (the mushrooms will not be fully cooked). Remove from the heat and stir in the mustard. Allow to cool for several minutes.

In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, egg whites and milk until frothy. Add the slightly cooled mushroom and sausage mixture and stir to combine. Season with generous pinches each of salt and pepper.

Place a few cubes of bread crust in each muffin cup, then spoon the egg mixture on top. You may not need all of the bread crusts.

Lay 1 slice of tomato on top of each tart, then 1/2 tablespoon of cheese over that.

Cover the muffin tray with foil and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. When you are ready to serve, heat the oven to 350 degrees F. Bake for 15 minutes covered, then remove the foil and continue baking until the eggs are firm, another 10 to 15 minutes.

Nutrition information per serving: 170 calories; 50 calories from fat (29 percent of total calories); 6 g fat (2.5 g saturated; 0 g trans fats); 75 mg cholesterol; 430 mg sodium; 19 g carbohydrate; 2 g fiber; 5 g sugar; 10 g protein.

the almond flour ensures the fats are healthy (and offer a smidge of protein and nutrients). All of which makes my lemon cottage cheese cake not exactly as authentic as a trip to Rome, but certainly a perfect way to end a Mother’s Day meal.

Lemon Cottage Cheese Cake Start to finish: 1 hour Servings: 12

3 eggs, separated 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature 3/4 cup granulated sugar 1/2 cup low-fat cottage cheese 1/4 cup grated lemon zest (2 to 3 lemons) 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 cup almond flour or meal 1¼ cups whole-wheat pastry flour (or all-purpose flour) 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

3/4 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt 1/4 cup low-fat milk Powdered sugar, to serve (optional) Raspberries and chopped fresh mint, to serve (optional) Heat the oven to 350 degrees F. Coat a 9-inch round cake pan with cooking spray, then line with kitchen parchment.

In a medium bowl, use an electric mixer to whip the egg whites to stiff peaks, then set aside.

In a large bowl, use the mixer to beat together the butter and sugar for 1 minute.

Add the egg yolks and mix again until creamy and pale, about 2 minutes. Add the cottage cheese, lemon zest and vanilla, then mix on medium until very well blended and the cottage cheese is broken down a little.

In a medium bowl, sift together the almond flour, pastry flour, cinnamon, baking powder and salt. Mix half of the dry ingredients into

the butter and egg mixture and mix on low with the mixer. Add the milk and the remaining dry ingredients, then mix on low to blend.

Using a rubber spatula, fold in half of the whipped egg whites rather briskly until well mixed into the batter. Fold in the second half of the egg whites very gently, until blended in, but not deflated.

Pour the batter into the prepared pan. Bake on the oven’s middle shelf until the cake is golden and springs back under light pressure, about 35 minutes. Let cool for 15 minutes before removing from the pan, then let cool completely. Once cooled, dust the top with powdered sugar and serve with raspberries and mint, if desired.

Ready to mix it up on Mother’s Day? Try rye berry pancakes

But that doesn’t mean what you serve needs to be the same old plain pancakes. After all, Mom is special. Her breakfast should be, too.

So we created these rye-based pancakes that offer a hearty – but not heavy – alternative to the typical flapjack. They are a fun and delicious way to work whole grains into the meal. And to dress them up a little more than usual, we spiked the usual maple syrup with cocoa powder. We added fresh raspberries to the batter,

but blueberries or sliced strawberries would be a great choice, too.

Raspberry Rye Pancakes With Chocolate Maple Syrup Start to finish: 15 minutes Servings: 6

3/4 cup all-purpose flour 3/4 cup rye flour 3 tablespoons sugar 1½ teaspoons baking powder 1/4 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup milk 2 eggs 6 tablespoons butter, melted, plus extra

for cooking 1 cup fresh raspberries 1/2 cup maple syrup 2 tablespoons cocoa powder Heat the oven to 275 degrees F. In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, rye flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt. In a second bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs and butter. Stir the milk mixture into the flour mixture just until moistened; there should still be some lumps in the batter.

Heat a large skillet over medium-high. Melt a small amount of butter in the pan and swirl to coat the bottom.

Drop 1/4 cup batter into the pan and nestle

a few raspberries into the batter. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes, or until set around the edges and bubbled. Flip over and cook for another 3 to 4 minutes, or until browned and cooked through. Place on a pan in the oven to keep warm. Repeat with the remaining batter.

In a small saucepan, whisk together the maple syrup and cocoa powder. Cook over medium to warm, whisking frequently. Serve over the pancakes.

Cottage cheese is a staple in my home. I love its creamy, mild flavor.

It pairs perfectly with some garlic and herbs to make a protein-packed crudité dip, yet it also is at home in a quick dessert of cottage cheese and unsweetened applesauce (a d’Arabian weeknight favorite). Half a cup offers tons of protein (14 grams) plus calcium and vitamins, and all for just about 80 calories and only 3 grams of carbs.

Plus, it’s inexpensive.

Cottage cheese is more than just a snack; it’s also a handy and nutritious ingredient. I love using it as a swap for ricotta in just about any recipe. Simply spoon the cottage cheese straight from the carton and use or, for extra points, drain or blot the excess moisture from the cottage cheese and pulse in the food processor and you’ll have almost exactly the texture of ricotta cheese.

You even can use cottage cheese as a base for a lusciously creamy salad dressing. Just blend up the cottage cheese with a few tablespoons of very hot water, which will soften the curds just enough to make the results creamy. Add smashed garlic, lemon juice, fresh herbs and black pepper, and you have a tasty dressing or dip.

One of my favorite ricotta indulgences is Italian ricotta cake, which is something between a classic cake and a cheesecake. Sweet and fatty, a little sliver goes a long way.

Here is my cottage cheese makeover of this yummy (calorie-dense) treat. I use cottage cheese, of course, but I also cut the butter way down and kept the sugar on the lower end (1½ teaspoons per serving). Loads of lemon zest keep it exciting, and

Sun exposure can damage skin Dear Dr. K: You’ve said many times the sun can harm our skin and increase the risk for skin cancer. How does it do that?

Dear Reader: As you age, the single biggest cause of damage to skin is sun exposure. This damage is called “photoaging.”

Over the years, sun exposure causes fine and coarse wrinkles; baggy skin with a yellow, leathery appearance; and dry, scaly skin. It also reduces collagen, a natural chemical that gives strength to tissues and supports a network of blood vessels in the skin. As a result, the skin bruises more easily.

Finally and most significantly, sun exposure increases the risk for skin cancer.

That includes melanoma – the very dangerous kind of skin cancer that can spread – and the less serious kinds of skin cancer that rarely spread.

Skin damage from sun exposure is caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Three different wavelengths of UV light come from the sun. Not all the sun’s rays have the same effects, though all can cause damage to the skin. Some wavelengths of UV radiation penetrate the skin more deeply than others. (I’ve put an illustration of this on my website, www.askdoctork.com.)

The three main wavelengths of the sun’s UV radiation: • UVC, the shortest of the three, has the highest energy level and is the most damaging. Fortunately, most UVC rays don’t reach the Earth’s surface.

• UVB is the next shortest. UVB rays are lower in energy than UVC rays, so they’re less damaging to skin. UVB rays make up about 5 percent of the ultraviolet radiation that reaches the Earth’s surface.

• UVA is the longest wavelength and penetrates most deeply. UVA rays play a role in photoaging.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff The people most vulnerable to getting melanoma are those who are fair-skinned (particularly pale skin, lots of freckles and red hair) and who have major sun exposure early in life. Most dangerous are repeated bad sunburns (five or more).

As a fair-skinned kid who spent a lot of time as a child on the beaches of Southern California, I had many sunburns. It was a time before we recognized the dangers of too much sun exposure. You might say we worshipped the sun. It was false idolatry: A dermatologist now checks me out every six months.

All types of cancer start in one cell. The genes in that cell cause the cell to start dividing uncontrollably: One cell becomes two, two become four, four become eight, and so on. Pretty soon, there’s a cancer. This uncontrolled growth is driven by genes – genes that aren’t built properly, or that are turned on and off at the wrong time.

This applies to all types of skin cancer, including melanoma. In some cases of melanoma (roughly 10 percent) a person inherits a gene that makes them vulnerable.

More often, DNA in skin cells is damaged

by UVB and UVA radiation.

I wish I had known when I was a kid what we know now about the damage sun exposure can do. Fortunately, the knowledge research has given us will protect our children and grandchildren.

Dear Abby: I DEAR ABBY have been in a serious relationJeanne ship with my Phillips boyfriend for two years. He shared with me he was sexually abused by a cousin for years as a child. He told me he has never disclosed it to anyone but me.

My boyfriend says he has come to terms with the abuse and his abuser, but I’m not sure it’s true. He became really upset when he spoke about it the one time, and we haven’t discussed it since.

I’m afraid to pry, but I think he might need help. His abuser still is present in his life. I’m not sure what’s stopping him from seeking help. What do you think I should do? – Only may not have discussed what happened because of fear or embarrassment, or because his abuser made him feel it was his fault.

When someone is abused for years, that person is the victim of a predator.

Talk to him again about this. I agree he should consult a mental health professional.

Not only would it help him, but because therapists are mandated reporters, it also would ensure this cousin doesn’t sexually abuse other children.

Last week, we had a deal with two faces; the result rested on West’s decision as dealer -- to open or not to open. Here is another, today for declarer and tomorrow for a defender.

South is in four hearts. West leads the spade king. East overtakes with the ace and returns the suit. West takes that trick, cashes the club ace, and plays another club. How should South continue?

After West’s one-spade opening bid was passed around to South, he might have jumped to three hearts.

In this balancing position, it would have been an intermediate jump overcall (not weak), showing at least a six-card suit and some 15-17 points.

But it would typically have indicated a stronger suit than this one.

North’s three-heart raise was no thing of beauty, with a 10-loser hand, but with four-card heart support, it was hard to pass.

Declarer has surrendered three tricks, so must play the trump suit without loss.

Whenever an opponent opens the bidding, declarer should always count the high-card points. In this deal, South can concentrate on either defender. First, East. He passed over one spade, denying six points. But he has already produced the spade ace; he cannot have the heart king.

Next, West. There are only 17 points missing, and East has shown up with four. West must have the heart king.

So, instead of taking the finesse (the right play in isolation), declarer cashes the heart ace and hopes that the king drops. It’s South’s lucky day.
