Evergreen Terrace partnership

JOLIET – The Joliet City Council is scheduled to vote Tuesday on an agreement that puts in place the operating company that would run Evergreen Terrace.

City Manager Jim Hock expressed confidence that an appellate court likely was to award the low-income housing complex to Joliet. He said the agreement puts in place a corporation to manage Evergreen Terrace once the city gains control.

“We are expecting that the court of appeals will uphold the decision allowing us to condemn the property,” Hock told the City Council at a workshop meeting on Monday.

The agreement makes the city partners with Holsten Real Estate Development Corp. in Chicago in future management and redevelopment of Evergreen Terrace.

Hock said Joliet and Holsten would become “50-50 partners” at Evergreen Terrace, but the city would be “the controlling entity” on major decisions about

the complex.

The agreement spells out 20 different “major actions” that cannot be taken by the newly created partnership without consent from the city of Joliet. They include future redevelopment of Evergreen Terrace.

It does not specify how much Holsten will be paid, which Hock said will be determined later. But it does provide that ownership and management costs will be paid with income from the property.

Joliet paid $15 million – the price set by a federal grand jury – in August to take Evergreen Terrace from the private ownership group headed by Ron Gidwitz, a prominent Illinois Republican, and his family. The owners, however, appealed the case, and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, which subsidizes rents at the complex, would not consent to city ownership until after the appeal is decided.

New dog law

The council on Tuesday also is slated to vote on a new ordinance regulating the

handling of vicious and dangerous dogs.

Also on the agenda is an intergovernmental agreement with Joliet Township Animal Control, the agency that picks up vicious, dangerous and stray dogs in the city.

The ordinance was developed over the course of six months while responding to concerns generated by pit bull attacks, City Attorney Marty Shanahan said.

He said two of the most important elements of the new law is that it gives the city power to take away a dog after an attack that causes serious injury and it provides for restitution for victims of dog attacks.

DriveTime vote

The council also will decide what to do about DriveTime, the national car company that wants to move into the former Century Tile site at 1395 N. Larkin Ave. The Zoning Board of Appeals voted against a special use permit last month after hearing from community advocates who questioned the company’s lending practices.

Catholic Charities receives HUD grant

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Catholic Charities in Joliet is among the nonprofits awarded this week with federal grant dollars aimed at counteracting homelessness with supportive housing programs.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced nearly $14.1 million in continuum of care grants for 49 homeless housing and service programs in Illinois.

Catholic Charities’ Daybreak Shelter, 611 E. Cass St., was awarded $792,583 and $60,248 to help pay for two supportive housing programs.

The $792,583 grant will help fund the nonprofit’s permanent housing program – designed for single men deemed chronically homeless, said Courtney Suchor, direc-

tor at the nonprofit’s Daybreak homeless shelter.

“Our permanent supportive housing program is for people who have some sort of disability. Instead of staying in shelters, or on the streets, they have case management and other supportive services that allows them to remain housed in a safe settling,” Suchor said.

Studies have shown that this type of intervention is more cost-effective than a system in which the person periodically uses emergency homeless shelters or winds up in hospital emergency rooms or the criminal justice system, she said.

The $60,248 grant will fund a program called “Turning Point,” which provides housing for homeless veterans and families in the Joliet area.

According to a U.S. HUD news release, these continuum of care grants support

President Barack Obama administration’s efforts to end homelessness and build upon the $88.7 million in funding HUD awarded throughout Illinois through a first round of funding in March.

“We know how to end homelessness and these grants support local programs that are proven to prevent and end homelessness as we’ve come to know it,” HUD Secretary Julián Castro said in the news release.

Kathleen Langdon, spokeswoman for Catholic Charities, said the grant is “significant” in aiding the nonprofit’s mission.

“It tells you about the reputation that Catholic Charities has in the way that we take care of clients,” Langdon said.

Julie Gudeman, community services program accountant for Catholic Charities, said the HUD grants are provided yearly to support homeless mitigation efforts.

BOYS & GIRLS CLUB GETS A LIFT Comcast volunteers clean and paint new computer lab

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Antione Ford recalled some good memories of “The Club” while there over the weekend helping more than 80 Comcast volunteers clean, paint and set up a computer lab.

The George Werden Buck Boys & Girls Club of Joliet will look a little better this summer, and its young members will get access to computers, thanks to the volunteer effort Saturday.

Ford was there with his wife, Althea, a Comcast employee, and remembered what it was like many summers ago when he spent time after school and summer days at The Club.

He learned to swim at The Club.

The first Chicago Bulls game he went to was through The Club. And, there were valuable life lessons, too.

“You didn’t mess around,” Ford said. “If you got in a tussle or anything, you were gone for a week. There

are consequences for everything that you do, and they taught that to us growing up.”

The same rules apply today, said Kahlil Diab, executive director of The Club at 226 E. Clinton St. in Joliet.

Unlike in Ford’s day, it’s now the Boys & Girls Club. Back then it was the Boys Club. Like in Ford’s day, most kids just call it “The Club,” Diab said.

“This place serves as a home-awayfrom-home for our kids,” Diab said.

“A lot of our kids are from single-parent households or poverty-stricken homes.”

Computer access

The computer lab created by Comcast is a big improvement, which has no computers for its after-school program now. Many of the kids who use The Club don’t have computers at home either, Diab said.

“Without the computer lab, a lot of these kids wouldn’t have access to computers,” he said.

Comcast provided 10 desktop computers and 10 tablets as part of its Comcast Cares Day contribution to

the Boys & Girls Club of Joliet.

“We’re glad to be here today to give the building a fresh start,” said Tony Signorella, senior manager for government and regulatory affairs at Comcast. Signorella also is on The Club’s board, and is well aware of the building’s needs and the function it serves.

“The staff here does a phenomenal job, led by Kahlil,” he said. “Everybody here goes the extra mile for the kids. That’s what it’s all about.”

‘Kids really love this place’

The Boys & Girls Club is accommodating to kids, charging only $20 for its after-school program and $30 for the summer program.

Average summer attendance is 400 a day, Diab said. The after-school program attracts about 150 a day. Ages range from 6 to 18.

Residents’ railroad questions left unaddressed Q&A session with Great Lakes Basin co-founder held Monday night in Morris

By HEIDI LITCHFIELD hlitchfield@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Hundreds of Grundy County residents came out Monday night to Morris Community High School to hear Great Lakes Basin Railroad co-founder Frank Patton answer questions about the privately funded railroad he wants to build, and many left disappointed.

“Fifty percent of the questions he never answered,” said Jack Schroeder of Morris. “I understand the ones that pertain to nondisclosure, but most of the other ones he deflected to the guy sitting next to him. If he is not qualified to address the concerns of the county, why is he here?”

The person next to Patton was Lee Hutchins Jr., director of Freight Logistics & Planning at AECOM in Chicago.

As proposed, the Great Lakes Basin Railroad project would run 275 miles from La Porte, Indiana, to Milton, Wisconsin, and cut through Grundy County. Those spearheading the effort filed paperwork in March with the federal Surface Transportation Board, the governmental agency responsible for approving or denying the project on its merits while examining potential environmental impacts.

After a 15-minute presentation by Hutchins and Patton, moderator Anne Heinze Silvis, from University of Illinois Extension, read to Patton questions written down by attendees.

When questions asked specifics of where the money for the proposed $8 billion project was coming from, Patton responded that he had been discussing the project for three years and he could not disclose those who may be financing the project. He had similar responses to questions about which Class 1 railroads he has commitments from.

“Answer the question,” was shouted several times from both sides of the gymnasium where the forum was held.

After similar questions were reiterated in other phrasing Patton responded with, “we have two years’ worth of discussions with people who can fund the project.”

Patton answered one question about whether he would use Railroad Rehabilitation & Improvement Financing for the project by stating it is one option they have looked at.

“The RRIF currently has a balance of $30 billion and the federal government is aggressive to use it,” Patton said.

road closures, and possible hazardous spills from a derailment, Hutchins said the railroad has a requirement to operate safely and securely not only to the federal government, but to the clients whose products they will be shipping.

When asked how much of the $8 billion will come from foreign investors, Patton said he couldn’t say, but added at

the moment he doesn’t plan to have any foreign investors.

The questions aimed more at addressing the concerns of the farmers – including how they will be compensated if the railroad goes near their property but not on it, or what will be done to address drainage in the fields – were often met with vague answers stating they

would be addressed once a final route is determined.

Patton did tell farmers at the beginning of the meeting that he would offer those whose land would be needed $20,000 an acre, double the estimated value, as well as free electricity and rail access.

Those facts were met with shouts from the audience including the question of who would provide the free electricity. Patton said the railroad would provide it.

More than one question was discredited by Patton; he stated he didn’t believe they were legitimate concerns, including the possibility of decreased value of property along the proposed route.

“I don’t think that is a valid point,” Patton said. “Our position is the value of the land will not decrease but increase.”

Vets invited to resource fair May 6 at JJC campus SHAW MEDIA JOLIET – Joliet Junior College is hosting a resource fair for veterans from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday on the Main Campus, 1215 Houbolt Road in Joliet.

The fair will be held in the C-Concourse, in front of the Veterans Center, and the VA Mobile Vet Center will be parked outside. The resource fair is being held to help provide information on community resources to all veterans in the JJC district, according to a news release from the college.

Veterans must bring two copies of their DD214. The designation will be no additional cost for first-time driver’s license applicants and driver’s license renewals. If veterans choose to add the designation before their renewal date, they may obtain an updated driver’s license for $5 and an updated ID card for $10.

In all of 2015, the district spent $18,036.

Cain said that if people cannot afford the proper disposal of items, they could try to negotiate a lower fee with their waste hauler or could contact social service agencies for help.

Cain said the required cleanup of illegal dumping takes staff away from other priorities. Violators can face up to $225 in fines, plus restitution costs.

Will County to host annual textile collection through Friday

JOLIET – The Will County Resource Recovery and Energy Division will host its annual textile collection through Friday.

Collections bins are available from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on the first floor lobby of the Will County Office Building, 302 N. Chicago St. in Joliet, according to a news release from the county.

In 2006, Will County began collecting gym shoes and in 2007 started accepting all shoes. To mark the 40th anniversary of Earth Day in 2010, the county expanded the collection to include all clothing and textiles.

Will County will partner with USAgain, which reuses and recycles fabrics, clothing and shoes. The county collections have averaged more than 3,000 pounds of textiles annually, according to the news release, which then have a new life through recycling.

WJOL-AM’s Scott Slocum will host a live remote broadcast from the county office building from 6 to 9 a.m. Friday.

JOLIET – As the weather warms and people head out to local trails, the Will County Forest Preserve District encourages users to be vigilant in spotting vandalism or “fly dumping” – which is when people illegally dump garbage and take off.

A newly released 2016 quarterly report shows there were 54 incidents of vandalism, fly dumping, theft or accidents at 22 district sites between January and March.

Hammel Woods and Sugar Creek preserves in Joliet, and the Wauponsee Glacial Trail – which stretches from Joliet to Manhattan – recorded the highest numbers of incidents.

Staff often spot problem areas, but also rely on trail and preserve users to report a problem, district spokeswoman Cindy Cain said. “[Users] love the preserves. ... They want to see nature and beauty and if it’s been spoiled, they want it cleaned up quickly,” Cain said.

The district’s garbage cans are for general use for individuals, not for household or commercial garbage disposal, but there has been illegal dumping there anyway.

Between January and March, in Hammel Woods, the district reported that a dog waste removal company filled five garbage cans with animal feces, while others discarded a dresser, a couch and a chair.

Twice in one week the fencing along the Wauponsee Glacial Trail was ripped out and thrown into the creek.

In another incident, someone stole a horse/bike sign off the trail.

The district also reported 28 tires dumped along the roadway, along with two televisions and one computer near the Sugar Creek Preserve, which once hosted a drop-off site for electronics.

“Rather than just dump their electronics in a preserve or public place, we urge people to wait for Will County to come up with a new plan for disposal of these items,” Cain said in an email.

A new district campaign encourages users to use their “Eyes, Ears and Cellphones” to be on the lookout for vandalism and other crimes.

Lockport man beaten to death downstate

By ANNA SCHIER aschier@shawmedia.com HURST – A Lockport man died Friday after being badly beaten in a small town downstate, and a suspect has been charged with his murder.

Chad Jones, 40, was pronounced dead at 3:08 a.m. by Williamson County Coroner Junior Burke at Herrin Hospital in Herrin, according to a news release from the Coroner’s Office.

About an hour earlier, Jones was found lying on the ground beside a pickup truck in the 400 block of North Bush Avenue in the tiny downstate town of Hurst, the Williamson County

Sheriff’s Office stated in a news release.

Benjamin R. Howell, 34, of Hurst has been charged with first-degree murder in Jones’ death, the Sheriff’s Office announced in a sep- Benjamin arate news release. His R. Howell bond has been set at $1 million and he is being held in the Williamson County Jail.

According to the Coroner’s Office, Jones died from injuries suffered in an altercation. Preliminary results from an autopsy Friday indicate the cause was blunt force trauma.

HOMER GLEN – The couple involved in a murder-suicide Saturday have been identified.

Will County sheriff’s police believe Steven Siano, 56, killed Mary Siano, 54, then turned the gun on himself in the bedroom of their home in the 16000 block of Meadow Crest Drive in Homer Glen.

Deputies responded about 10 a.m. Two older children were in the residence at the time and heard their parents arguing and then heard gunshots, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Office.

“At this time it appears that this is an apparent murder-suicide based on information gathered from witnesses at the scene,” the news release stated.

Domestic dispute led to fatal Lockport Township crash

LOCKPORT TOWNSHIP – Police believe a domestic dispute led to a two-vehicle crash Sunday that killed a Joliet man.

About 6:30 a.m., Willard D. Lesley, 27, was driving a 2003 Dodge Intrepid and a 27-year-old woman was driving a 2003 Hyundai Sonata near Princeton and

Fairmont avenues in Lockport Township, Will County sheriff’s spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said. Neither vehicle was carrying passengers.

“It appears one of the vehicles intentionally swerved in front of the other,” Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Rick Ackerson said. “Both drivers had been involved in a relationship.”

Lesley’s Intrepid went into the backyard of a residence on the south side of Princeton Avenue while the Sonata remained in the roadway. Lesley was pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman was taken to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, where she was treated and released.

“She was interviewed and said [Lesley] was in her lane, approaching her head-on before he attempted to turn at the last second, but wasn’t in time,” Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Tom Budde said.

An autopsy for Lesley was scheduled for Monday. The crash is still under investigation, Ackerson said.

According to Sheriff’s Office records, Lesley was being sought on arrest warrants for domestic battery charges from a 2015 incident in Crest Hill and several traffic violations at the time of his death.

Minooka Community High School senior dies after using drugs at Milwaukee club drug Molly, the documents state. Upon admission to the hospital, she tested positive for amphetamines and cannabinoids.

An autopsy was scheduled for Monday morning, and the death was preliminarily ruled accidental by the Medical Examiner’s Office.

According to the documents, Starr drank alcohol and smoked cigarettes and marijuana, but family members were unaware of any other drug use.

Minooka Community High School District 111 spokesman Dave DiLorenzo confirmed that Starr was a senior at the school.

Family declined an interview request.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Andrew J. McGann & Sons Funeral Home, 10727 S. Pulaski Road in Chicago.

The funeral will be 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday at Most Holy Redeemer Parish, 9525 S. Lawndale Ave. in Evergreen Park. It will be followed by a service at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, 6001 W. 111th St. in Alsip.

MILWAUKEE – Officials said a Minooka teen died early Sunday after using drugs while at a club in Milwaukee.

Kara E. Starr, 18, was pronounced dead just before 5 a.m. in the emergency room at Aurora Sinai Medical Center in Milwaukee, according to documents from the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Starr had been in Milwaukee to attend a concert, the documents state, and was at a club called The Rave when she began seizing. A Milwaukee Fire Department ambulance took Starr to Sinai between 2 and 3 a.m.

When admitted to the hospital, she was unresponsive and received several forms of treatment – including one round of the opioid overdose antidote Narcan – before she was pronounced dead, according to the documents.

Witnesses said several people were involved in a fight about 8:45 a.m. in the 1000 block of North Hickory Street, Joliet Police Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said. A shell casing was recovered at the scene but no damage was reported from the shot.

Wilson, 26, of Jackson, Mississippi, was arrested on charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and reckless discharge of a firearm and booked into the Will County Jail.

On April 8, 1950, Bill married Marion Carver in the First Presbyterian Church in Wilmington, and later went on to honorably serve in the U.S. Army.

Bill was a Holstein dairy farmer and grain farmer his entire life. He also sold Crow’s Seed Corn. Bill served on the board of directors for the Will Country Farm Bureau, Will-DuPage Farm

Mildred M. Riley (nee Mahoney), age 96, of Joliet, passed peacefully, Saturday, April 30, 2016, at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home.

Born Jan. 22, 1920, in Berwick, to the late Aleta Rose (nee Rice) and Jerry Mahoney, she was a longtime Joliet resident. Former vice president of Eby-Brown Co. of Joliet Inc. She worked as a secretary in civil service during WWII wherever her husband, Richard, was stationed.

Mildred was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Presence St. Joseph Medical Center Women’s Auxiliary, Joliet Country Club and Quail Ridge Country Club in Boynton Beach, FL. Her greatest gift in life was that she was being the “greatest encourager.” She always stood behind her family with unwavering support. One of her favorite sayings was, “Smile, laugh, be happy and most of all ... breathe.”

Millie always enjoyed riding her pony, Dixie, to her one-room schoolhouse. She was also very proud of the free oil change she won for a holein-one in 1976. Mildred loved playing cards and was an accomplished bridge player. If you sat down across from her you didn’t know it, but you were in trouble!

Preceded in death by her beloved husband of 61 years, Richard W. Riley; her parents; three sisters, Edith Mahoney, Gertrude Anderson and Dorothy Day; two brothers, Earl and Leo Mahoney; and dear niece, Mary Vollert.

John is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Beverly (nee Allison); children, Karen (Mike) Nawa and Jennifer (Brian) Errthum; grandchildren, Maggie and Matthew Nawa and Joe and Allison Errthum; sister-in-law, Kathleen (the late Robert) Sitar; and numerous nieces and nephews.

John was born and raised in Joliet and started playing music professionally at the young age of 16. After graduating from Joliet Catholic Academy and attaining an associate degree from Joliet Junior College, John joined the U.S. Navy in 1963 and was honorably discharged in 1965. He was best known for his music and owned and operated Sitar’s Music and Electronics from 1972 until 2012. John’s greatest passion was entertaining all different generations of people and teaching countless students the art of music. He was a member of the St. Bernard Catholic Church Parish in Joliet.

John will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

The Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Ill., is one of seven nonprofit hospitals listed as among the nation’s 10 most profitable hospitals, according to a study published Monday in the journal Health Affairs.

The Associated Press CHICAGO – Seven of the 10 most profitable U.S. hospitals are nonprofits, according to new research, including one in Urbana, Illinois, where hospital tax exemptions are headed for a contentious court battle that soon could determine whether medical facilities are paying their fair share of taxes.

The “Top 10” list accompanies a study published Monday in the journal Health Affairs. The analysis is based on federal data from 2013 on nearly 3,000 hospitals. The authors measured profits using net income from patient care services, disregarding other income such as investments, donations and tuition. Researchers say the measure reflects how hospitals fare from their core work, without income from other activities.

The research comes as cities in New Jersey, Michigan and Wisconsin also wage battles over hospital tax breaks.

Officials are scraping for revenue and pressuring hospitals to either pay up or justify their tax-exempt status.

U of Illinois faculty union calls off strike

URBANA – Classes at the University of Illinois’ Champaign-Urbana campus resumed their normal schedules Monday after a faculty union reached a tentative contract agreement with the school and called off the remainder of its strike.

The Non-Tenure Faculty Coalition Local 6546 authorized a five-day strike when contract talks ended Wednesday without a settlement. The strike began Thursday morning and was scheduled through the last day of classes this Wednesday.

University protesters have rallied against student debt and racism after recent incidents including an anonymous video calling for violence against black students.

Monday’s march in Carbondale was conceived as a one-day strike to call attention to economic issues. The protest broadened after the video’s online release via YouTube drew condemnation from school leaders one week ago. YouTube later removed it for violating the company’s policies on hate speech.

University and Carbondale police reported no arrests by Monday afternoon as participants chanted in a courtyard in the center of campus.

Several speakers invoked the slogans and demands used at the University of Missouri, where protests last year led to the resignation of the university system president and the flagship campus’s chancellor.

Like Ohio Gov. John Kasich, Cruz is already mathematically eliminated from reaching a delegate majority before the Republican Party’s national convention in July. He retreated to Indiana more than a week ago, hoping a win could at least help him deny Trump an outright primary victory and lead to a contested convention.

But a recent poll of likely Indiana voters showed Trump holding a commanding lead.

At a stop in Monday in Marion, Indiana, Trump supporters confronted Cruz.

“Lyin’ Ted!” yelled one, using Trump’s pet name for his rival.

“What do you like about him?” Cruz asked the man. “Name one thing.”

“Everything,” the protester replied.

After six straight victories across the Northeast late last month, math and momentum are on Trump’s side. The anti-Trump movement’s only hope is to deny the billionaire businessman a 1,237-delegate majority by defeating him in Indiana and the handful of contests remaining over the next month. Then, Cruz or another candidate would have to beat him when delegates gather in Cleveland in July.

“Millions of Americans are praying for this state,” Cruz said. “The entire country is depending on the state of Indiana to pull us back from this cliff.”

Trump’s team sensed an Indiana knockout.

“Indiana is Ted Cruz’s firewall. It’s where he says that it’s make-or-break for him,” Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski said.

“And if he loses tomorrow night, he has to once again try and articulate why he is still in this race.”

Tuesday features a primary on the Democratic side, too. New signs emerged that front-runner Hillary Clinton’s chief rival, Bernie Sanders, is fading as well.

Clinton announced $26 million in new fundraising in April, narrowly beating Sanders. His total of $25.8 million last month marked a steep decline from $46 million he collected in March.

Sanders also refused to report how much money he had in the bank, raising questions about whether he can sustain his online fundraising dominance as his path to the nomination becomes less likely.

Theresa Mah, D-Chicago, never was given much of a chance at winning the 2nd House District Democratic primary race March 15 against a wellknown political name who had a huge demographic advantage.

Mah was vying to be the first Asian-American legislator in state history. But the 2nd District was purposely drawn to include Chinatown in order to give Asian-Americans only some “influence” in the district.

In previous years, Chinatown and Asian-American neighborhoods were sliced up among several legislative districts, but the Democrats made a conscious decision to avoid a federal lawsuit against their map by creating an “influencer” district.

The Census numbers show the 2nd has an Asian-American voting age population of 23.5 percent, vastly smaller than the 53 percent Latino VAP. And the organization of Rep. Eddie Acevedo, D-Chicago, had put another Asian-American on the ballot to further muddy things on behalf of Acevedo’s son Alex’s candidacy to replace him. But that put-up candidate was kicked off the ballot Feb. 1, and things went rapidly downhill from there.

The younger Acevedo’s campaign took its own Latino base for granted and didn’t take Mah very seriously.

Acevedo sent only two negative mailers against Mah, and they hit the boxes

On the other hand, Mah, a former Pat Quinn administration official, sent numerous mailers which disastrously defined Acevedo as a Bruce Rauner/ Rahm Emanuel candidate. Acevedo’s Facebook page displayed a photo of himself and his father with their arms around Gov. Rauner along with a post about endorsing Emanuel’s re-election. Both men are hugely unpopular in Chicago, and they were tied around Acevedo’s neck in multiple, brutal mailers.

The Acevedo organization reportedly expected Asian-Americans to make up about 18 percent of the district’s final turnout. Instead, the final number was closer to 30 percent. Asian-Americans in the city typically turn out in far lower numbers than their population strength would suggest. Not this time.

Why? Well, a big reason was they finally had a legitimate candidate to vote for who spent a lot of time, energy and money on getting them to the polls. One Acevedo operative said he knew they were in big trouble when he

saw the first packed bus unload Mah supporters at an early voting location.

Same-day registration played a huge role in Mah’s win as well, and it really kicked into high gear when Acevedo sent loud, obnoxious thugs to disrupt a Mah campaign event featuring U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez’s endorsement of her. Gutierrez told reporters he feared for his life during the rowdy event.

Word spread like wildfire (helped along by Mah’s campaign) that the demonstrators had called Gutierrez a “ch-nk lover.” There isn’t any video evidence of that, but the rumor took hold, and Chinatown’s elders were furious and demanded that powerful 11th Ward Committeeman John Daley withdraw his endorsement of Acevedo.

Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders’ big surge in Chicago also contributed. Sanders won the top three wards in the 2nd District, including Daley’s 11th. But that backing was put into focus when Sanders supporter Chuy Garcia, a former mayoral candidate, endorsed Mah’s bid. Liberal whites and younger Latinos took strong notice, and their fury at Donald Trump’s appearance in Chicago and their fervent support of Sanders was channeled into supporting Mah. The Acevedo people realized late in the game that the district’s “hipsters” were coming out hard and tried to address it by placing “Acevedo/Sanders”

signs at polling places. It didn’t work.

Mah won Daley’s ward. Some say Daley pulled his captains from the precincts the afternoon of Election Day under pressure from Chinatown.

Others say he cleverly diverted some Democratic voters into a contested Republican ward committeeman race, where each candidate received more than 700 votes while Mah won the district by a bit over 500. Others point to the fact that Daley refused to appoint the younger Acevedo to the seat if the elder Acevedo retired early as evidence that he was secretly backing Mah. The Acevedo family also got itself involved in a nasty Democratic ward committeeman race, siding with Sen. Tony Munoz over 12th Ward Ald. George Cardenas.

Cardenas lost the committeeman’s race, but he ended up backing Mah, and she won the 12th by a couple of hundred votes. There were more contributing factors, but this isn’t a book, even though it may feel like it.

Acevedo vows his son will be back for another try in 2018, so Mah, Illinois’ first Asian-American legislator-elect, will have to work hard and not ever let her guard down.

To the Editor: Is the NCAA an overly expensive operation that’s outlived its usefulness and no longer benefits the student athlete, and its operations?

Is it better handled by the colleges, universities, conferences and AAU? For example, the NCAA has been far too slow in addressing the concussion problem.

Joliet Central beats Joliet West in 12 as teams swing to fight cancer

Johnny Slattery and Jesus Gonzalez delivered RBI singles in the top of the 12th inning Monday as Joliet Central slipped past SouthWest Suburban Blue rival Joliet West, 4-2, in the first of what the Joliet Township baseball programs plan to make an annual “Strike Out Cancer” game.

This one was played at the West diamond. The site will alternate each year.

“The two teams were playing today for something a little different,” said West coach John Karczewski, whose pork chops-on-a-stick were hit at the concession stand.

“Karch and (Scott) Gentile and all the West coaches did a really nice job,” Central coach Kevin Fitzgerald said.

“We’re looking forward to trying to make it even better next year.”

What both coaches wanted to mention was the Locke family being in attendance, with the three siblings of Addison Locke, daughter of Central athletic director Steve Locke, throwing out first pitches.

Addison died of cancer July 19, 2013, at the age of 7. Proceeds from raffles and concessions will be split between Pink Heals of Joliet and the Addison Locke Memorial Scholarship.

“I really feel close to the Locke family,” Karczewski said. “When they brought the Locke kids out there to throw out the first pitch, it brought tears to my eyes.”

“It was nice to see Steve Locke and his kids out here,” Fitzgerald said. “It is important for our kids to understand this is a beautiful game, a game that some can’t play. We’re lucky to be able to play it.”

Wrist bands were sold supporting each school with #D4A (Don’t Forget Addison) on them. The pregame cere-

mony included a mention that the Joliet Township family also would like to show its support for past Ahtletic Booster Club president Glen Marcum and longtime teacher and coach Pat O’Connell, both of whom are battling cancer.

Tyler Lawson pitched the first seven innings and faced one batter in the eighth for Central (6-14, 1-6). He allowed two unearned runs on three hits. He also drilled a single to left-center field that gave the Steelmen a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth inning and began the decisive rally in the 12th with an infield single.

“It was good for us to win a conference game, especially against Joliet West,” Lawson said. “What really hyped me up was beating West on the day for Addison (Locke).”

Lawson struck out six, hit two batters and the only walk he allowed was to the first batter in the bottom of the eighth. Joseangel Ruvelcaba relieved and escaped a jam when Central’s in-

field turned a 6-4-3 double play.

“I pitched OK, but I don’t like hitting two batters, and I did leave a few pitches up,” Lawson said.

“I can’t say enough about Tyler Lawson,” Fitzgerald said. “He has taken his game to a whole other level. He is really into the game mentally.”

Junior right-hander Ricky Malmfeldt relieved to start the bottom of the ninth and needed his best Houdini act right off the bat. West (6-13-1, 1-6) loaded the bases with nobody out and could not score as a 6-2 fielder’s choice, a popup to shortstop and another fielder’s choice ended the threat.

“When they loaded ’em up with zero outs, I thought I had to throw strikes and let our fielders make the plays,” Malmfeldt said. “I’ve never had ’em loaded with none out and gotten out of it. Overall, this probably is the best that I’ve thrown.”

“Our pitchers battled, but we feel like we let one slip away. We hit way too many balls in the air.”

Colton Foote started for the Tigers and worked into the fourth inning, when Jordean Anderson relieved and Central scored on a wild pitch to lead 1-0. Breven Daugherity’s pinch double, an error and Joey Keigher’s RBI fielder’s choice tied it in the fifth.

Central went back ahead on Lawson’s clutch hit in the sixth, and West tied the score at 2 on a two-out error in the sixth.

There were clutch defensive plays on both sides, along with plenty of strategic moves, until the Steelmen came through with the big hits from Slattery and Gonzalez in the 12th off Tom Purcell, who had pitched 51/3 scoreless innings before the 12th.

“What a big hit for Slattery,” Fitzgerald said. “He’s a sophomore.

That’s a real confidence-builder. And then Jesus got us the big insurance run.”

ROMEOVILLE – Lewis’ Bobby Walsh has been named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association All-American First Team, and Mitch Perinar, a Minooka graduate, and Jacob Schmiegelt have been named honorable mention All-Americans.

Walsh hit .471, third best in the nation, with 2.10 kills a set. He added 1.11 blocks a set (128 total) on his way to All-Midwestern Intercollgiate Volleyball Association First Team honors.

He also earned MIVA All-Tournament Team accolades. Walsh finished his career second in program history with 556 blocks.

Perinar finished the season averaging 3.15 kills a set on a .325 attack percentage. Perinar was the only freshman selected to the honorable mention team.

Schmiegelt hit .427 with an average of 1.63 kills a set (179 total).

He averaged 1.03 blocks a set (113 total).

West captures win over Lockport

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Monday’s baseball game between Lockport and Lincoln-Way West didn’t figure to highlight hitters, considering the strong winds blowing in from center field.

But while the Porters only managed four hits, the host Warriors were getting production up and down their lineup to claim a 9-3 nonconference victory.

Eight Warriors collected hits against three Porter pitchers. They finished with 12 hits to go with six walks, a hit batter, a runner advancing on a dropped third strike and three errors.

While Lockport (10-7) had 12 baserunners against two hurlers, West (126) managed to score all but one of its runs after two men were out.

“Things weren’t favorable for the offense today, but our guys did a great job,” Warriors coach Jake Zajc said.

“We’ve been doing a good job hitting the ball, even when we had a tough week last week. We executed some bunts to keep innings going. It was a good execution day for us, for sure.

Connor (Lowman) wasn’t as efficient as I’m sure he wanted to be early, but he battled through it and made an adjustment, and that’s a great learning experience.

“The next couple of weeks look like we’ll have some good weather, so hopefully we’ll get into a rhythm and get into synch. One through nine, we have some experience and a lot of depth.

The kids care and they want to do well, and obviously when your coaching

a team like that, it’s a great thing to have. Hopefully we’ll continue to have a good attitude and keep working.”

The first inning kind of epitomized the Porters’ day. While five of their first six batters drew walks, they only managed to score once.

Warriors starter and winner Connor Lowman (five innings, three hits, three strikeouts, six walks) coaxed a double play early in the first and then after walking Matt Harder with the bases loaded to bring home Gavin Lovesky, got a ball hit back to him to get out of the jam.

“We had an opportunity in the first inning but only got one run and you can’t do that against a good team,” Porters coach Andy Satunas said.

“After they tied it, they got four hits in a row with that big one in the gap.

Those came with two outs, and we have to find a way to get out of that inning. Then we’re chasing and made some more mistakes and made it more difficult on ourselves. We have to do a better job of picking up the ball and throwing it.

“I’ve been happy that we continue to battle through the last out of the game. We’ve had some late-inning comebacks, and those are things that go into the piggy bank for later in the year when you can lean back on that experience. These guys are resilient.

They come back hungry every day, and they continue to work hard, and that goes a long way.”

West tied the score in the third when Joe Paparelli reached on a fielder’s choice to bring home Matt Monahan (3 for 3). An inning later, the

Porters argued they got out of a jam on a grounder to first, but the umpire disagreed.

Ryan Hastings (2 for 4) followed with a three-run double to right that scored Gabe Montalvo, Adam Knerr and Monahan.

“Lately, we’ve been hitting the ball good, and sometimes it doesn’t fall but sometimes it does, so you have to just keep swinging because baseball will even itself out,” Hastings said. “We’ve got a strong one through nine and it doesn’t really matter who’s up because everyone can do every job. And on a day when the wind was blowing in, we got a lot of bunts down.

“Even though Connor struggled a little at the beginning, with our defense, you don’t have to strike out a lot of guys since we have guys in the outfield and infield who can make plays.

I like how we have good hitters one through nine and our pitchers throw strikes and do their job. We have each other’s backs and it’s easier to play when we want each other to do good.”

Lockport made things interesting in the fifth when Lovesky smacked a home run to left to also score Jake Huber. But West got those two runs back in the bottom of the inning when Noah Hibler scored as Ben Zordani (2 for 3) reached on an error and then Dan Allen came home when Monahan walked with the bases loaded.

While Kyle Creagan only allowed one Porter hit in two innings of relief, the Warriors capped the scoring in the sixth when Tyler Dallio doubled home Paparelli and Hibler and then scored on a single by Zordani.

Enloe’s hit in 14th wins it for Plainfield South

Plainfield South junior right fielder Nick Enloe ripped a fastball from Minooka right-hander Brad VanAsdlen into left field Monday to drive home Nick Mayerhofer and give the Cougars a 2-1, 14-inning victory over the Indians.

The score was tied at 1 after 12 innings Friday when it was called because of darkness. Play resumed in the 13th inning Monday.

“My approach was to get a fastball and put it in play,” Enloe said. “I got a little nervous when VanAsdlen threw me a 2-1 splitter. I zeroed in on the fastball and hit it hard and got the job done. Great win for us today. It felt like

we had just won the regional. That’s how much fun it was for us to play and win this great game.”

With it being a huge game for seeding position in the Class 4A Bloomington Sectional, South coach Phil Bodine and Minooka coach Jeff Petrovic really wanted to win. Petrovic started VanAsdlen and Bodine used junior Mississippi State recruit Austin Marozas.

Marozas (4-0) struck out the side in the 13th. VanAsdlen (4-3) extended his hitless and scoring streak to eight innings in a 1-2-3 bottom of the 13th. Marozas struck out two more in a 1-2-3 top of the 14th. South pitching recorded 23 strikeouts in the game.

“I knew I had to throw strikes in the top of the 13th,” Marozas said. “Huge.

Just a huge win. It should help us get a better seed.”

In the bottom of the 14th, Mayerhofer muscled a pitch just beyond the reach of second baseman Nate Vacini for a leadoff single. Trey Stewart sacrificed. Konnor Ash, after a 3-1 count, was intentionally walked. The runners advanced on Marco Escobar’s groundout. Gabe Wair was intentionally walked to fill the bases, and Enloe delivered the game-winner.

“It was a really long game and we had the whole weekend to prepare for it,” Mayerhofer said. “I was looking for a first-pitch fastball and got it but didn’t hit it hard. I was able to muscle it over the second baseman’s head.

It’s early in Lovie’s regime, of course, but Illini fans are keeping their fingers crossed that he is able to recruit top talent consistently from within the state. That would go a long way toward bringing the Illinois program back to respectability.

• Shortly before Smith committed, Bolingbrook junior defensive end Izayah Green-May made his commitment to Wisconsin.

Roark continues to show how much he belongs in the Washington Nationals’ starting rotation under manager Dusty Baker.

The right-hander followed up his spectacular game against the Minnesota Twins – 15 strikeouts and two hits in seven shutout innings – with an outing Thursday against Philadelphia that was just about as impressive. He pitched seven shutout innings, this time striking out six while allowing two hits, but did not get a decision. The Phillies broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the ninth to win, 3-0.

Entering Tuesday night’s start at Kansas City, Roark is 2-2 with a 2.03 ERA in 31 innings. For his major league career, all with Washington, he is 28-20 with a 3.04 ERA in 3941/3 innings.

• Mike Foltynewicz (Minooka), the former first-round draft pick of the Houston Astros, is back with the Atlanta Braves and was scheduled to start Monday night’s game against the New York Mets.

Foltynewicz is replacing Bud Norris in the rotation. Norris has an 8.74 ERA in five starts. Foltynewicz had a 5.71 ERA in 18 appearances (15 starts) last season with Atlanta before he was sidelined with a blood clot in his arm. The right-hander made four starts this season with Triple-A Gwinnett and went 1-2 with a 2.05 ERA.

College slugger TJ Condon has been swinging a hot bat at Faulkner University, an NAIA school in Montgomery, Alabama. Faulkner entered this week 42-12 and will host an NAIA Opening Round Tournament in a couple of weeks for the fourth straight spring.

All Condon has done is hit .400 (44 for 110) with 12 doubles, one triple, six home runs and 34 RBIs. He has a .511 on-base percentage and .691 slugging percentage for an eye-catching 1.202 OPS. • When I attempted a couple of weeks ago to catch up on area products who are playing NCAA Division I baseball, some that I missed were Xavier freshman infielder Rylan Bannon (JCA) and two SIU-Edwardsville teammates, sophomore pitcher Brendan Miller (Plainfield North) and freshman pitcher Danny Ehrsam (JCA).

Bannon is playing regularly and hitting .248 (35 for 141) with eight doubles, three home runs and 14 RBIs for Xavier (19-26).

Miller is 3-2 with a 5.28 ERA for SIUE (9-30). In 46 innings, he has allowed 46 hits and 21 walks while striking out 28.

Ehrsam has pitched two innings in two games and has a 4.50 ERA.

Study: Football concussions and resuming play vary by age

By LINDSEY TANNER The Associated Press CHICAGO – Younger football players are more likely to return to the field less than a day after suffering concussions than those in high school and college, according to a new study.

Only 10 percent of young players with concussions resumed football that soon, but the results are concerning and suggest a need for more sidelines medical supervision and better recognition of concussion symptoms in children, said sports injury researcher Zachary Kerr, the lead author.

He directs an injury surveillance program at Datalys Center for Sports Injury Research and Prevention Inc., an independent group in Indianapolis.

“Younger kids may struggle to describe” their symptoms, and health effects from concussions might not show up right away, Kerr said, citing possible explanations for the study findings.

Much of the attention on sports concussions has focused on professional

football and in college, but there’s a need for more prevention efforts and research at all levels, including among the youngest players, Kerr said. The study also found differences in concussion symptoms depending on players’ age, offering guidance for parents, doctors and coaches in assessing injured players.

The NCAA and USA Football, the national governing body for amateur football, helped pay for the study, published Monday in JAMA Pediatrics. The researchers said it’s the first study to compare concussion symptoms and return-to-play times at all three levels.

The details: The study involved injuries reported by athletic trainers during practices and games from 2012 through 2014. The data included more than 200 programs at the youth, high school and college level. Youth teams involved players aged 5 to 14 in Pop Warner and USA Football programs.

A total of 1,429 concussions were reported during the three seasons.

Concussions during games were most

common in college players, averaging almost 4 per 1,000 games; the rate was 2 per 1,000 games among youth players and almost 2 per 1,000 among high school players. The rate in practices was less than 1 per 1,000 at all three levels.

The symptoms: An average of about six symptoms occurred with concussions in college and high school players.

Youth players had slightly fewer symptoms and were the least likely to lose consciousness, although blackouts were rare at all levels. Dizziness, headaches and loss of balance were among the most common symptoms at all levels.

College players were most likely to have amnesia and disorientation; high school players were most likely to have noise sensitivity and excessive drowsiness. Insomnia was more common among high school and college players but rare at the youth level.

Return to play: At all levels, most players were sidelined for at least a week.

Time away from the sport of at least a month was most common among high

school players – about 20 percent, versus 16 percent of youth players and 7 percent of college players. Less than 1 percent of high schoolers returned to play less than 24 hours after injury, compared with almost 5 percent of college players and 10 percent of youth players.

The American Academy of Pediatrics and other doctor groups recommend athletes avoid returning to play until all concussion symptoms have disappeared.

The study notes procedures for youth players required athletes to get a doctor’s approval before returning to play.

Reaction: USA Football spokesman Steve Alic said the study “underscores the importance of informing coaches and parents about concussion recognition and response.” He noted that being aware of concussion symptoms and managing them appropriately is part of the group’s Heads Up football program, which says players with suspected concussions should be evaluated by a health professional and not be allowed to return to play until they get medical clearance.

Of this and that, beginning with the NFL Draft: Various assessments that have been made regarding the Indianapolis Colts’ draft, and there is a suggestion out there the selection of Bolingbrook graduate Antonio Morrison, a Florida inside linebacker, in Round 4 might turn to gold.

Morrison, the Herald-News Defensive Player of the Year his senior year at Bolingbrook, had some offthe-field issues early in his collegiate career, then played a season in 2014 with more than 100 tackles. However, he suffered a severe knee injury in the Birmingham Bowl game in early January 2015 that cast doubt about him returning the next fall.

Through hard work, he got to the point where he not only played all season, but also posted another 100plus tackle year. He is productive.

Look for him to make the Colts’ roster and be an immediate contributor in some manner.

• If Morrison gets high marks for being productive, the same applies to Illinois safety Clayton Fejedelmen (Lemont), a tackling machine drafted in Round 7 by the Cincinnati Bengals. I’m eager to see whether he makes the roster and to what degree he contributes.

• In addition to drafting Morrison, Indianapolis has signed Illinois running back Josh Ferguson (Joliet Catholic) as an undrafted free agent.

Bears release veterans Slauson, Rolle

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@profootballweekly.com One of the most consistent players on and off the field was released Sunday when the Bears parted ways with guard/center Matt Slauson. The team announced the move along with the release of Antrel Rolle.

“We thank Matt and Antrel for the dedication and leadership they brought to our organization,” Bears GM Ryan Pace said.

“Both men did everything we asked of them. Part of growing as a team is making difficult decisions like the ones we made today. We never take them lightly given the respect we have for everyone who has put on a Bears uniform. We wish each of them the very best as they move forward.”

Slauson joined the team in 2013 on a oneyear deal and played every snap, earning a four-year contract after the season. He was limited to only five games in 2014 because of a torn pectoral and returned in 2015 to start every game, playing both guard and center.

Slauson, who turned 30 in February, was due $2.85 million this season. The Bears added veteran interior linemen Manny Ramirez and Ted Larsen in the offseason and used their second-round pick on Kansas State guard Cody WhiteAntrel Rolle hair.

Last season, Slauson won the Pro Football Writers of America’s “Good Guy Award” for his work with the Bears’ media.

Rolle, 33, signed a three-year contract with the Bears in 2015 but had no guaranteed money left in his deal. He started seven games last season and had 35 tackles and one pass defensed. Rolle ended his season on injured reserve with a sprained MCL and he also missed time with an ankle injury.

On Saturday, the Bears drafted two safeties – Deon Bush and DeAndre Houston-Carson. Bush, who went to the University of Miami like Rolle, looked up to the now-former Bear and trained with him in South Florida.

Adrian Amos returns as a starter, and the Bears signed former Broncos Omar Bolden, but he is more of a special-teams player. Of the seven safeties on the Bears’ roster, five are either rookies or second-year players.

By JOHN PERROTTO The Associated Press PITTSBURGH – Jason Hammel raised his record to 4-0 and Anthony Rizzo hit two doubles as the Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates, 7-2, Monday.

Hammel’s ERA rose to 1.24 after entering the game with a National League-leading 0.75 mark.

He gave up two runs and five hits in five-plus innings with three strikeouts and one walk. His streak of five straight starts of allowing one run or fewer ended.

Rizzo hit an RBI double and scored in the third inning as the Cubs went ahead 2-1, then doubled again during a four-run fifth that pushed the lead to 6-1.

The Cubs improved to 18-6 – tops in the major leagues – and avoided losing consecutive games for the first time this season while winning for the fifth time in six games.

Dexter Fowler had two hits for the Cubs, including a double, and two stolen bases and Javier Baez also had two of the Cubs’ 11 hits. David Ross hit a two-run single in the fifth, Ben Zobrist had

two RBIs and Kris Bryant extended his hitting streak to eight games.

Gerrit Cole (2-3) was roughed up for six runs – five earned – and six hits in 42/3 innings after winning his previous two starts. He struck out six but walked four in losing to the Cubs for just the second time in nine regular-season decisions.

Jordy Mercer went 3 for 3 with a walk for Pittsburgh and has reached base in 14 straight games but Josh Harrison’s 10-game hitting streak ended as he went 0 for 4. Andrew McCutchen drove in both Pirates’ run with a first-inning homer, his sixth, and a ground out in the fifth.

The Pirates lost their second straight game after winning six in a row.

The Cubs pulled in front 2-1 in the third inning when Rizzo hit a two-out RBI double and scored on Zobrist’s single.

In addition to Ross’ single, Zobrist hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth and Matt Szczur scored on a throwing error by Harrison, the second baseman, on the back end of a delayed double-steal attempt.

Zobrist scored on a wild pitch by Kyle Lobstein in the seventh to increase the Cubs’ lead to 7-2.

Automated defibrillator devices designed for lay use

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media correspondent JOLIET – Automatic external defibrillators are now so simple, an 8-year-old can use them with no instruction.

That’s the message former paramedic Joann Flannery promotes in her classes.

Flannery, a basic life support training teacher for the American Heart Association, said one doesn’t need to read a long list of directions, know how to take a pulse or worry the device will shock a person who doesn’t need it. The device issues voice commands, assesses the condition of the patient by itself and instructs which button to push if a shock is needed.

Quickly getting a heart to start beating again is extremely important, Flannery said. A victim’s chance of surviving a cardiac arrest drops 7 percent to 10 percent with each passing minute. Most people who have a sudden cardiac arrest die.

“Paramedics can take 10 to 12 minutes, depending on where you’re at,” Flannery said. “The patient could be dead by then.”

Deputy Fire Chief Jon Stratton of the Plainfield Fire Protection District said that’s why the devices are located in public places. They help save lives.

“I’ve never heard of anyone getting shocked unless it was needed,” Stratton said. “And you hear and read all kinds of success stories about them.

That’s what’s great about them.”

Illinois law stipulates that only people trained by a nationally recognized organization – such as the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross – should operate the AED. A cardiac arrest, according to the American Heart Association, is an abrupt loss of heart function. An AED is a lightweight, portable device that delivers an electric shock through the chest to the heart. The shock stops an irregular heart rhythm and allows a normal rhythm to resume.

Bystanders don’t need to know why someone has suddenly collapsed before them, Flannery said. During cardiac arrest, the facial appearance changes to blue, gray, pale and purple around the lips.

So the first step, Flannery said, is to give him a good look, a gentle shake, and then ask, “Are you OK?”

Some people experience dizziness, chest pain or shortness of breath before they collapse, Flannery said.

However some have no symptoms before losing consciousness, she added.

Flannery said it’s most efficient if there are at least three people around – one to fetch the AED device, one to call 911 and the other to start chest compressions. A lone rescuer, she added, should first call 911, then get the AED and use the device immediately, even before beginning chest compressions.

There are only four steps to operate an AED, Flannery said.

First, power it on.

“The newer ones power on automatically as soon as you open the cover,” Flannery said.

The device will then “speak” the instructions. The first will be to place

the pads onto the chest of the victim.

The pads themselves have diagrams that show proper placement.

Some AED devices come with a kit with scissors for cutting off clothing if need be and shaving off patches of hair. The pads must have good contact with the skin. Clothing or tangles of hair might interfere.

“Then the AED immediately starts to analyze,” Flannery said. “So you don’t have to make that decision whether to shock or not.”

The device might tell you to step away, Flannery said. Be sure you and the victim aren’t both in a puddle of water, or you will be shocked, too. “[The device will] say, ‘Shock is advised. ... Push the shock button now,’ ” Flannery said of the AED device. “There might be a slight jump of the victim, then he’ll say, ‘OK, it is safe

to touch the victim.’”

One might need to perform compression CPR after the shock, Flannery said. The AED device may even voice the counts out loud, she added. If the 911 dispatcher is still on the line, he or she might give advice regarding CPR. “Some of [the AED devices] will even tell you if you’re not pushing down deep enough or fast enough,” Flannery said.

Never fear delivering a shock to someone who doesn’t need it.

Flannery said. AEDs aren’t used on someone who is having a heart attack, Flannery said, only on someone in cardiac arrest. The device will determine the distinction.

“You can’t deliver a shock on a person who is alive,” Flannery said. “It’s [the AED device] not going to let you.”

PSJMC doctor leads medical mission trip JOLIET – Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center infectious disease physician Dr. Fred Alexander and a group of 33 local health care providers traveled to Santa Cruz, Bolivia, for a nine-day mission trip to care for the poor and underserved.

Upon their arrival in Bolivia, the team of American volunteers – physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, students, pharmacists and general nonclinician helpers – were joined by Bolivian physicians, dentists and translators. Together the team visited multiple underserved sites, including senior care centers, children’s camps, health care clinics, poor neighborhoods, remote villages, and even a prison.

The team set up makeshift medical

clinics and provided vitamins, anti-worm medicine, antibiotics and primary care at each location. The team saw several thousand patients in this fashion.

Since 2010, Alexander has taken nine such mission trips to medically underserved areas around the world.

In addition to serving on several committees at PSJMC, he was also honored as a 2013 PSJMC Physician of the Year finalist.

Alexander currently serves as vice president on the board of directors of Cup of Cold Water Ministries, a nondenominational Christian mission organization based in Norway, Illinois, that sponsors these mission trips.

lieving pain. Opioids are not the only option. For some people, the risk of abuse is small, the side effects are minor and the drug reduces their pain by a lot. But for others, these drugs reduce pain only a little, and cause severe fatigue and cognitive side effects.

The best pain-management treatments are tailored to each individual; they combine several different therapies to help minimize side effects. Take a person with chronic low back pain, a history of alcohol abuse and depression. This person might do best with a combination of non-opioid pain relievers, cognitive behavioral therapy and an antidepressant. But another person, also with chronic low back pain, might get the best results with daily lowdose opioids and weekly acupuncture.

Of course, people with chronic pain want to experience less pain. But they also care about enjoying life more and having a strong sense of emotional well-being. They want to increase their physical activity, sleep better and reduce fatigue. They want to participate in social and recreational activities. These goals need to be balanced against the downsides of pain treatment.

I’d recommend you see a pain specialist.

Such specialists are best trained to find the combination of therapies that will both give you pain relief and spare you side effects that might be as difficult to deal with as the pain.

Dear Dr. K: I have been in pain since a car accident a few years ago. My doctor is very conservative in prescribing pain medication. Why not just give me what I need to feel better?

Dear Reader: I don’t know the particulars of your case, but I think you are talking about narcotic (opioid) pain medicines.

And your doctor probably is reluctant to prescribe opioid medicines for chronic pain – the kind I assume you now have if your accident was a few years ago.

Opioid pain medicines are of unquestioned value in treating acute pain – the kind you had immediately following the accident. They definitely reduce pain, and many of their side effects don’t become a problem until a person has been taking them for a long time.

In contrast, the treatment of chronic pain is tricky. I spoke about the treatment of pain with my colleague, Robert T. Edwards. He is a licensed clinical psychologist in the Pain Management Center at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He pointed out opioids can have very bothersome side effects, even in the short run. For example, they make people tired and cause constipation and memory problems.

Another major issue, as the ongoing opioid crisis illustrates, is opioids carry the risk of abuse and overdose. They are not to be prescribed lightly. Approximately 25,000 people died in 2014 from opioid overdoses.

In many cases, those deaths were from prescription opioids.

Many pain experts say while opioids are potent relievers of acute pain, there is not much evidence they are more effective than other forms of therapy for chronic pain.

So in treating your pain, your doctor (and you) have to balance benefits against risks and consider multiple options for re-

– Sympathetic In San Diego Dear Sympathetic: Have a frank talk with your sister now. Ask her how many of the leads you gave her were followed up on. Because you say she is chronically depressed, encourage her to see a doctor and find out what kind of help there is for her. It might be the reason for her divorce and her inability to seek other work and improve her financial situation.

That you will no longer be able to continue assisting her financially is something your sister needs to know ASAP, so she won’t be cut off abruptly. This isn’t tough love; that you will be on a fixed income is a fact of life.

You have been a wonderful sister. You have done more than many people would, so do not feel guilty for taking care of yourself.

Dear Abby: It has been eight years since my first love, “Oliver,” and I broke up. It was amicable and we both had closure. I have been in my current relationship for six years. We love each other very much and have two beautiful kids together.

I don’t often think about Oliver, and we haven’t spoken since our split. But the crazy thing is, I dream about him constantly. The dreams are pretty tame and they don’t make sense. I don’t understand why this is happening. I know myself and I know I don’t miss Oliver. I’m happy in my current relationship.

I was taught years ago the things we see in our dreams are manifestations of our subconscious and are not meant to be taken literally. Boris Spassky had that incredible 21-game World Chess Championship match against Bobby Fischer in 1972.

Spassky said, “When you play Bobby, it is not a question if you win or lose.

It is a question if you survive.” Fischer won that match by 13.5 to 7.5, despite forfeiting the second game.

At the bridge table, the declarer enjoys a huge advantage, but he is sometimes flying blind after an uncontested auction. The defenders, in contrast, have always heard bids by their opponents. They should use this information to try to checkmate the declarer -- as in today’s deal.

South is in four spades. How can the defenders prevail after West leads the heart ace?

East has no reason to want his partner to shift at trick two, so he should encourage with his heart eight -- always play the highest card you can afford. West cashes the heart king and continues with his last heart. What should East do after taking that trick?

East should count the high-card points. He has eight, there are 13 in the dummy, and partner has already produced seven. That leaves only 12 unaccounted for. South must have the spade ace-king and diamond ace.

Also, since South is known to have at least six spades and three hearts, the defenders cannot take another sidesuit trick. So, they need a trump trick.

East should lead his last heart. When West ruffs with the spade eight, it effects an uppercut and gains a trump trick for East.

When you have taken every possible side-suit trick, give a ruff-andsluff.

Sealed proposals will be received by the Village of New Lenox at the Village Hall, 1 Veterans Parkway, for the 2016 MFT resurfacing project, Contract Section 1700000-01-GM until 11:00 a.m. local time on May 12, 2016 and at that time publicly opened and read aloud. The proposed improvements consist of hot mix asphalt surface removal, hot mix asphalt resurfacing, curb and gutter removal and replacement, sidewalk removal and replacement, driveway removal and replacement, curb shotcrete and other incidental and miscellaneous items of work on approximately 7.79 miles of various Village streets. Plans, specifications and contract proposals may be obtained thru the office of the Civil Engineer, Village of New Lenox, 1 Veterans Parkway, New Lenox, IL 60451. The office is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and on Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Proposals shall be delivered to the Office of the Civil Engineer of the Village of New Lenox. Electronically transmitted proposals will not be accepted.

A current IDOT Certificate of Eligibility must be presented to obtain proposal forms. The Village of New Lenox reserves the right to reject any and all bids and to waive technicalities in the bidding.
