The term limestone is often used in general terms to describe the carbonate rocks and fossils. In a more specific sense, limestone is distinguished from a second substance, dolomite, by its smaller content of magnesium carbonate. Both limestone and dolomite are found in Illinois, but it is dolomite that was the important quarry stone of the Des Plaines River Valley.

Dolomite and limestone underlay sections in northern Illinois, and quarries are often located where thick stone deposits occur near the surface. The limestone and dolomite of Illinois were formed from the shells and skeletons of sea creatures that lived in the ancient oceans that once covered parts of the state. As these creatures died, their remains became compacted on the ocean floor and were mixed with sand or clay and combined to form limestone.

In the Illinois and Michigan Canal Corridor, the largest concentration can be found in an area from Joliet to Lemont.

The excavation and construction of the I&M Canal in the 1830s and 1840s revealed the extent of the dolomite outcroppings in the area. Most stone found and utilized along the I&M Canal was actually quarried just north of Joliet, but two other tracts in Aux Sable and Ottawa were also utilized to build lock chambers, bridge piers and building foundations.

Soon after the opening of the I&M Canal in 1848, commercial quarrying along or near the canal began to increase. Easy access to transportation on the canal, and the railroads that quickly followed its route, made Joliet and Lemont the main suppliers of limestone to Chicago. By the early 1870s, the towns of Joliet, Lockport, and Lemont all became the centers of 19th century quarrying activity in the region.

The city of Joliet actually sits on a thick bed of dolomite just below the surface.

Quarrying was Joliet’s first industry, paving the way for early settlement and later the nickname “Stone City.”

By the 1890s, some 25 quarries were operating between Joliet and Lemont.

Over the decades, limestone blocks were used for foundations, bridge abutments, aqueduct piers and lock walls. The unique color of Joliet limestone made it a favorite

He and his students are looking for old Joliet photos and postcards, and images from Joliet’s parks, for a new publication. for countless homes, commercial buildings, and churches in the area.

In the last decade of the 19th-century, Joliet quarries provided employment to more than 2,000 stoneworkers. The quarry industry, like the canal before, attracted many immigrants, mainly from southern and south central Europe. These groups included workers from Poland, Bohemia, Czechoslovakia, Austria and Italy. The work was hard and the pay low.

In the early 20th century, the changing tastes and new construction methods caused the use of Joliet limestone to fall out of favor. Steel skeleton structures, which helped to distribute the load-bearing

weight of tall buildings, along with the use of different materials for building facades, caused a shift away from hand-cut blocks that came from Joliet quarries.

As shipping and labor costs began to rise, a different limestone material from Indiana, known as Bedford limestone, gained popularity as it was harder and much easier to slice into thinner pieces.

Today, it is easy to find evidence of Joliet’s quarrying past. Not only are there several old quarries visible in the area, but street names on the west side of the Des Plaines River still bear the names of Joliet’s past with such names as Stone, Lime, Marble and Granite.

‘Healthy Kids Day’ initiative aims to encourage active kids

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – Four-year-old Brooklyn Damato put her stethoscope to her ears and listened for a heartbeat of a stuffed Elmo doll being used by Morris Hospital Trauma Coordinator Kathy Geiger as a tool to educate kids about nurses and doctors in the emergency room.

“I am here to teach the kids injury prevention, and want them to feel comfortable around a doctor or a nurse, because by the time they get to the emergency room, they have already experienced trauma,” Geiger said.

As a part of a national YMCA initiative, multiple YMCA locations under the Greater Joliet Area YMCA – C.W. Avery in Plainfield, Galowich in Joliet and Morris Community – held their annual “Healthy Kids Day” on Saturday.

Carolyn Hamilton, vice president of Marketing for the Greater Joliet Area YMCA, said the main motive of the event was to show kids ways to stay active and healthy during the summer months.

“These events are a great way to have a lot of people in one place to offer local resources to parents and kids about summer programs at the YMCA in their communities,” Hamilton said.

Morris Community YMCA member Carli Damato said she came to the event because she likes to learn about new things in Morris.

“This was great for the community because everybody needs to know what’s available to them. I came to get information on Girl Scouts for my daughter because I want her to be in scouts like I was as a child,” Damato said.

Hamilton said that each branch event was unique because of the different community services and the staff at each YMCA. Each class and service are tailored to fit the needs of those using the facility.

C.W. Avery Youth and Family Manager Shannon Stawikowski said that along with vendors, the instructors led a family Zumba class, the competitive dance team named THRIVE performed, and a vendor demonstrated a workout not yet available at the YMCA. “An instructor interested in coming to the YMCA led a Bollywood Fitness show. We wanted to see the public interest in this type of class before we made decisions,” Stawikowski said.

“If we can hit home that nutrition starts at home and address troubled issues of obesity and diabetes then our event was a success,” said Sarah Porzel, family and community engage-

ment director.

Porzel said their day was unique because of their partnership with the

Morris Hospital, which ran a teddy bear clinic with stuffed animals and offered healthy fruit pizza snacks.

Joliet students wowed by trip to Washington

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet students on a trip to Washington, D.C., hit many landmarks and museums on foot, walking an average of 10 miles a day.

The experience of visiting the nation’s capital left an impact on the 22 Hufford Junior High Individual Education School students who went – and not just on their feet.

“I will never forget this experience,” said Makayla Szendzial, a Hufford I.E. eighth-grade student, who visited D.C. for the first time.

Szendzial and other students saw the Washington Monument, the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, Arlington National Cemetery, the Lincoln Memorial and many other sites on their trip. Teacher Angela Albrecht, who’s been to D.C. before, said it was a different experience visiting with students.

“For me, it was cool because I got to see them experience [D.C.] and see it for the first time,” she said.

Albrecht said students also met U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville, in D.C. “[He] took a picture with us, took selfies with some of the students,” she said.

Tyler Gordon, an eighth-grader, said being in D.C. was cool. He said he and other students were able to see the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

“I really thought that seeing the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was the most interesting thing,” he said.

Veteran staffers retire from Will County Courthouse

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Will County Courthouse staff said goodbye last week to two veteran employees.

Theresa Ortiz, who was a court bailiff for 29 years, and Carla Coloma, who worked as a Spanish-language interpreter for 20 years, retired Friday and Saturday, respectively.

“Weekend and holiday court. I have to work an extra day,” Coloma grumbled with a smile.

Coloma was working part time at Joliet Job Corps when she saw a notice on a bulletin board for an interpreter position at the courthouse. The native Peruvian easily passed the Spanish-language test that was given when she applied.

But translating lawyer to English to Spanish for up to 50 cases a day required Coloma to regularly review law dictionaries.

There were many times a defendant would express the situation in a very informal way.

“It’s challenging. I have a lot of control of language,” Coloma said. “So I always tried to find phrases that were accurate and [appropriate].”

Many years ago, Ortiz’s mother worked as a court translator, “though she was from Mexico and could barely speak English,” said Ortiz, who was born in Joliet during the Great Depression.

Ortiz saw an ad in The Herald-News and went down to the courthouse thinking she was applying to “type or scrub the floor” but got hired as a bailiff.

“The best part of this job has been seeing people and understanding them.

I’ve tried to encourage people [with] what they’re going through,” she said.

Years later, she saw him as a defendant and urged him to make better choices.

“About a year later, he sent a letter to me at the courthouse with a photo from his high school graduation in

prison,” she said.

Ortiz has no plans to seek another job, but may do some volunteer work.

With nine children and “too many grandchildren and great-grandchildren” to count, she plans to remain in the area.

Citizens glimpse life of Minooka police MINOOKA – Six Minooka residents graduated from the Citizen’s Police Academy on April 25, the fourth graduating class from Minooka.

State Rep. John Anthony, D-Joliet, a former city of Champaign officer and Kendall County sheriff’s deputy, spoke to the graduates about what it means for them.

“You guys have to really come to the understanding of how important your eyes and ears are, how important it is to the community,” Anthony told the graduates.

Police can’t be everywhere at all times to see everything, said Anthony, so academy participants learn to be great witnesses to what’s going on in the community.

The academy was created to not only give citizens an understanding of what goes into the day-to-day work of an officer or investigator, but to bridge a gap between police and the community, Police Chief Justin Meyer said.

VIEWS Kris Stadalsky They go through a 10-week training program that takes them through identity theft, traffic stops and how to approach the occupants of a vehicle, SWAT operations and gear, a course on when weapons are used, when use of force is appropriate and a program called “Shoot, Don’t Shoot.”

Assistant Coroner Christine Hentze, from the Grundy County Coroner’s Office, gave participants a tour of the morgue and discussed protocol for when a body is received.

They also had a tour of the Will County jail and a lesson from Minooka Detective Ryan MacDonald in lifting fingerprints.

Meyer said that because police are under heavy scrutiny these days,

it’s important to understand the six pillars of good policing.

“Minooka Police Department is right in line with their transparency,” Meyer said.

Graduates had many different reasons for going through the program.

Michael Koszela is interested in police work, and the program offered him an up-close view of operations.

“I loved it all,” Koszela said of the program. “It’s always what I have been interested in.”

Vuli Ahmedi always had a negative view about police, she said. The program showed her her misconceptions.

“It was definitely worth it, and I would recommend the class to others,” she said.

BOLINGBROOK – A group of Bolingbrook homeowners is suing the village, saying a new runway at Bolingbrook Clow International Airport has ruined their property values and their lives.

The lawsuit was filed April 25 of behalf of the 35 property owners, all but one of whom live on the named properties on Pheasant Chase and Blackfoot drives and Lily Cache Lane, and who claim the village, which owns Clow Airport, lowballed them and took their airspace.

They are seeking compensation for amounts to be determined at trial on counts of inverse condemnation pursuant to the U.S. Constitution, inverse condemnation pursuant the Illinois Constitution and unjust enrichment, the lawsuit states.

According to the lawsuit, when the village began building the runway in 2015, officials knew the project would hurt the residents’ property values and quality of life, yet offered low sums for the homeowners’ air rights, pressuring them to accept the offers and telling them the runway would have no Effect on their lives.

Since the runway opened in December, aircraft now fly 50 feet or lower over the residents’ properties, causing loud noise and scaring the homeowners, the lawsuit states. The residents say they are suffering from sleep deprivation and stress disorder, and experience vibrations and property damage in their homes.

Meanwhile, the lawsuit alleges the village has seen significant financial gains from its use of the homeowners’ airspace.

Attorney Mike Leonard, who is representing the homeowners, did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

Plans for the runway project were to expand the width of the 3,400-foot-long existing runway from 50 to 75 feet and move it 75 feet to the west, according to previous Herald-News reports. The project was estimated to cost $6.9 million, but was largely grant funded.

Village Attorney Jim Boan said the amount offered to residents for their air rights varied based on location in relation to the runway’s glide slope.

He declined to speak further, adding he does not discuss pending litigation.

“These things take a while to play out,” he said.

Liz Walsh of Naperville, John’s daughter, said she repeatedly heard these two statements at her father’s funeral.

“He had a love of golf, but he had this love for people. He was a people person,” Liz said. “He just really cared about people and enjoyed interacting with people every day.”

John’s golf career began in the 1940s when he was a 13-year-old caddy at the Beverly Country Club in Chicago. Liz said her father walked past cows to get to work and even once caddied for Bing Crosby.

“He grew to be a master caddy,” Liz said. “Before that, he sold papers on the corner to make money for his family.”

John, Liz said, was a middle child in a family of 10 children, the son of Irish immigrants growing up during the Great Depression on Chicago’s South Side. Those experiences formed the foundation of his life, Liz said.

“He really didn’t care about material things,” she said. “He cared more about living a good life and being a good person.”

After serving as a U.S. Marine during the Korean War, John studied business at DePaul University and became the first person in his family to graduate from college, Liz said.

“He got a job as an assistant pro at Chicago Ridge and then the opportunity came up at the Joliet Country Club. He stayed the rest of his career,” Liz said.

“He could have gone other places, but it was important for him to stay there. He

really loved his job.”

For 40 years, John worked as a golf pro at the Joliet Country Club. In retirement, John taught golf clinics to people with disabilities, Liz said. Through golf, he mentored many and showed the teens who golfed at the country club during summer break how to be a man of integrity, she said.

When John retired from the country club 20 years ago, Wilson Sports Goods honored him with a set of golf clubs, Liz said. It was for Wilson that John taught the golf clinics at various locations, up until 10 years ago.

Retirement gave John expanded opportunities for practicing his faith. He attended daily Mass with his wife, Mary Elizabeth Walsh, at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Joliet, to which John belonged for 50 years.

In his later years, John also spent more time with family, including his grandsons and his many nieces and nephews. He never failed to entertain them with a joke – the cornier, the better, Liz said.

“He enjoyed meeting people,” Liz said. “It didn’t matter if the guy mowed his lawn or was president of the country; they were all equal to him. He wanted to know the name of the waiter at the restaurant.

“He believed in people. Even when his kids didn’t believe in themselves, he was their biggest fan. He used to tell me, even at my age and I’m 49, that he was proud of me. He adored my mother and as she struggled with dementia, he became her biggest advocate.”

John was 85 when he died Dec. 23.

She became the wife of the late Otto Konow on June 18, 1955, at the Homer Congregational Church, thus becoming the mother of Mary, Veronica, Walter, Cecilia, deceased, Dorothea (William) and George (Laura); in addition to eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She started working at a young age at the Paper Mill in Morris, then became a farm wife and mother, managed the Lockport Pizza Hut; she was always young at heart and energetic and she also cherished the many friends she met at Bingo.

Berniece’s dear husband, Otto; and daughter, Cecilia precede her to eternity; in addition to four sisters and four brothers.

To cherish a lifetime of memories include her children and their families; a sister, Francis and a sister-in-law, Lila; in addition to an extended family of relatives and friends.

STATE For some, Chicago State flawed but final shot at degree

The Associated Press CHICAGO – Most of the more than 4,000 students at Chicago State University on the city’s south side are black, have low incomes and, like their school, face often uncertain paths toward better futures.

A $600 million stopgap spending measure for Illinois public universities that Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner signed last week helped put the campus on firmer financial ground, but even the $20 million for Chicago State wasn’t enough to keep the school from laying off more than 300 employees, about a third of its workforce.

Even with its uncertain future, Chicago State represents the best chance forward for many of its students, they and experts agree.

The list of the questions facing the school on Chicago’s South Side has grown since last summer, when the state stopped providing money to its nine public universities due to the budget stalemate. The school at one point talked about possible closure, declared a form of academic bankruptcy and sent layoff notices to all of its employees before it cut the 300 jobs Friday.

Before the budget mess, Chicago State already was considered the worst-performing of the state’s public universities.

City announces plans to build Navy Pier hotel by 2018

CHICAGO – The city of Chicago said construction will begin next year on the first hotel at the popular tourist attraction, Navy Pier.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s office released details about the planned hotel Sunday.

a degree within six years, according to the U.S. Department of Education. At Eastern Illinois University, that figure is 60 percent. And at the University of Illinois’ flagship campus, it is 84 percent.

State audits regularly have turned up financial mismanagement in recent years, and enrollment has declined.

Chicago State also is more reliant on the state than any of Illinois’ other public universities, getting about 30 percent of its funding through annual appropriations. That doesn’t include the financial aid that most of its students use to help pay tuition – money that also is held up by the state budget situation.

The student body doesn’t look like those found at the other state universities. Three-quarters of the students are

Races back on at Arlington Park after legal dispute settled

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS – Opening day at Arlington International Racecourse is back on following an agreement to resolve a lawsuit that threatened the summer horse racing season at the track.

An agreement was announced Friday between a facility formerly known as Arlington Park

And even the cheaper options in the city are less likely to work out simply because they are not on the South Side, where many of the students are from, she said.

The Dixon Telegraph reported that Gonzalo Trevino Sr. died Thursday at the Winnebago Landfill. Authorities said the garbage truck contained 80,000 pounds of concrete, steel, wood and other building debris.

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the accident. The Winnebago County coroner said Trevino was killed by blunt force to the abdomen and chest.

New Milford Fire Chief Alan Carlson said Trevino was unloading a garbage truck when the load from a second truck shifted.

Champaign police officer waives jury in sex assault case

CHAMPAIGN – A Champaign police officer charged with sex crimes involving three women

in two counties has waived his right to a jury trial in one of the cases, which was set to start this week.

The News-Gazette reported that 31-year-old Jerad Gale made the request Friday in a Piatt County case. He is charged with two counts of criminal sexual assault involving a 27-yearold woman with whom he lived in Monticello; that trial was scheduled to begin Monday.

Defense attorney Evan Bruno declined to discuss whether Gale and local prosecutors are discussing a plea deal in lieu of a trial.

The 2014 Champaign police officer of the year is also charged with criminal sexual assault and aggravated domestic battery against former girlfriends in two separate Champaign County cases.

U.S. once again forced to turn to Russia for help with Syria

By MATTHEW LEE The Associated Press GENEVA – Scrambling to resuscitate a nearly dead truce in Syria, the Obama administration has again been forced to turn to Russia for help, with little hope for the desired U.S. outcome.

At stake are thousands of lives and the fate of a feeble peace process essential to the fight against the Islamic State group, and Secretary of State John Kerry has appealed once more to his Russian counterpart for assistance in containing and reducing the violence, particularly around city of Aleppo.

“We are talking directly to the Russians, even now,” Kerry said on his arrival in Geneva as he began talks with Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh. “The hope is we can make some progress, but the UN Security Council Resolution calls for a full country, countrywide, cessation and also for all of the country to be accessible to humanitarian assistance.

Obviously that hasn’t happened and isn’t happening.”

We look for Russia’s cooperation. We obviously look for the regime to listen to Russia and to respond to the international communities’ powerful statement to the UN Security Council.”

Kerry spoke at length Friday with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to that end, and had been hoping to meet with Lavrov soon, according to U.S. officials.

In Geneva, Kerry met with Judeh and was to meet U.N. envoy Staffan de Mistura and Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir on Monday before returning to Washington.

But Lavrov was not expected to be in Geneva, complicating Kerry’s efforts to make the case directly to the Russians for more pressure on their Syrian government allies to stop or at least limit attacks in Aleppo.

The State Department said Kerry, in his meetings, would “review ongoing efforts to reaffirm the cessation of hostilities nationwide in Syria, obtain the full humanitarian access to which the Syrian government committed and

support a political transition.”

Specific, viable options to achieve those broad goals are limited, and Friday’s announcement of a new, partial cease-fire that does not include Aleppo underscored the difficulty Kerry faced.

U.S. and other officials described that initiative, brokered mainly by Russia and the United States as co-chairs of the International Syria Support Group, as a “reinforcement” of the February truce, now largely in tatters, that they hope to extend from Damascus and the capital’s suburbs and the coastal province of Latakia to other areas.

“This is an agreement within the task force, but certainly on the part of the U.S. and Russia that there would be a reinforcement of the cessation of hostilities in these specific areas as a start, with the expectation that this ... would be then extended elsewhere,” State Department spokesman Mark Toner said.

Syria’s military extended a unilateral cease-fire around the capital for another 24 hours on Sunday.

Area boys track teams excited about the future

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – On a cold night where winter seemed to be closer at hand than spring, it was easy to think about the future.

And for most of the coaches of area boys track and field teams that competed in last Friday’s Lincoln-Way West Invite, it was easy to talk about what lies down the road for their squads.

For teams like Joliet West, Providence Catholic and Romeoville, the future clearly looks bright as a number of young competitors are making a big

impact.

And with two of the track coaches also serving as head football coaches and another being a longtime assistant, don’t be surprised to see some of the success carry over to the gridiron.

West coach Jason Aubry is understandably pleased to see how much his young squad has progressed. And he’s hoping that a good spring could result in more of the same in the fall.

The Tigers received several top-five efforts on Friday. Frosh-soph relays in the 4x400, 4x200 and 4x100 claimed first, second and third while the varsity 4x400, 4x200 and 4x100 were third,

fourth and fifth. Colt Dolak’s third in pole vault was the top individual finish.

Jaxon Aubry was fourth in triple jump and Omari Ferguson tied for fourth place in the 100. Finishing in fifth place for West were Daylen Foster in the 400, Rafael Hernandez in the 800 and Cole Schlegel in triple jump, while Daelin Lockman tied for fifth in high jump.

“We’ve got a sprinter-jumper group that’s so young,” Jason Aubry said.

“Almost all of these kids that you see running for us now are juniors, sophomores and freshmen. So that’s very

exciting for the future of our track program. And we’ve also got a distance group with a few seniors in it that are doing some great things.

“And the thing that I also like about it is that most of these guys are my football players. I think that coach Cogs (Mark Coglianese) has the same thing going at Providence, where he’s coached football and track, and they’ve benefited from it. He’s got guys out here competing, and that’s what we want to do, we want to compete in everything.”

Gavin Jaime from our 4x1 is only a sophomore and made the finals of the 200 and would have been in the fast heat of the 400, but he has a slight hip flexor. So we have a lot of positives, and we’re pretty young. It’s a great mix. We have a very strong core of frosh-soph guys and some key varsity guys.”

tured fourth place at the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship Friday USF shot a 356 on Thursday and a 357 on Friday.

Krystal Garritson finished fourth out of 41 golfers with a 170. Mary Jackson tied for sixth place (173) while Alex was happy to talk about how well athletes on her team have performed.

Finnegan, a three-time state medal winner in her own right while competing at Lockport a decade ago, is excited to be coaching along with Harper at Romeoville and looks forward to doing what she can to help the Spartans program to enjoy more success in upcoming seasons.

The Spartans received second-place efforts from Xavier Jones in triple jump, Jordan Nettles in the 100 and from Victor Osinloye in discus. Jorge Ocampo was third in the 300 hurdles as was the 4x800 relay. Joe Otchere tied for fourth place in the 100 and Davon Maxey did the same in shot put while Justin Suits finished fifth in 3200.

“I’m so excited,” Finnegan said. “I love working with coach Harper since we’re like two peas in a pod because we’re both so passionate about the sport. I absolutely love this and get really excited with how well they’re doing and I think that really helps to pump them up.

“Across the board we’re starting to great some great performances. We’ve got some great throwers, jumpers and sprinters and we’re getting good PR’s from our distance runners. To see them perform like this after working so hard during the week is just awesome.”

PLAINFIELD – An all-around effort pushed the Lewis University women’s tennis team to its second Great Lakes Valley Conference title in five years with the 5-1 win over No. 24 Drury University at the 5 Star Tennis Center on Sunday.

Coach Brett Bridel’s Flyers (18-4) had a 2-1 edge after doubles and rode that momentum into singles action with three straight wins to claim the championship and the automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Women’s Tournament. The victory avenges a 7-2 loss at the hands of Drury (18-3) on February 26th earlier this year.

At No. 1 doubles, Lewis’ Dora Andrejszki and Nora Mindiyarova won, 8-4, over Lara Muller and Samanta Zambrano. Andrejszki added a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 victory over Hadeil Ali at No. 1 singles while Mindiyarova won, 7-6 (6), 3-6, 6-1, over Muller at No. 2 singles, clinching the victory. Nostalgic night as Coomer returns home Ron Coomer is living the dream.

Imagine spending day after day in the Cubs’ radio booth with Pat Hughes, the best in the baseball broadcast business, describing and analyzing Cubs’ games as they journey through what might become a season of historic proportions.

Coomer, who enjoyed a nineyear major league career and was an American League All-Star once with the Minnesota Twins, is popular with baseball fans all over the Chicago area and nationwide.

Likewise, the Ron Coomer who graduated from Lockport in 1984 always is a hit when he returns home. He was among the Porters’ all-time, all-state baseball players who were recognized Friday night in a ceremony, orchestrated

by Lockport coaches Ken Dobson and Andy Satunas, preceding the Porters’ game against Stagg at Ed Flink Field.

The Cubs’ game against Milwaukee that afternoon at Wrigley Field, a 6-1 victory, ended shortly after 4 p.m., and Coomer was on his way to Ed Flink to see so many old friends.

“It’s fun to step back on this field,” he said. “I played a lot of high school and summer league games here. So many buddies and old friends are here tonight. There’s a great baseball history here.”

Just then, another of Lockport’s favorite sons, former American League umpire Bill Haller, walked up.

“What a great guy,” Coomer said.

“A couple of years ago, Bill was at a

VIEWS Dick Goss game and came up to our booth to visit. It’s always good to see him.”

Haller was in the pregame ceremony representing his late brother Tom, the longtime major league catcher and later front-office executive who played three sports at the University of Illinois before going into professional baseball.

Coomer is in his third season working Cubs’ game with Hughes.

He had a nice gig in Twins’ television and on radio in Minneapolis when Hughes called and convinced him to throw his hat in the ring for the Cubs’ job.

Things happened quickly, and he was hired.

“Every year, we have been on a different station,” Coomer said of his initial three seasons in the booth on the North Side. “Now that The Score (670-AM) and CBS have us, I think we’ll be staying put for a while. I just signed a new two-year deal. I’m looking forward to staying here.”

With the type of young talent the Cubs have, it has to be fun going to work.

“We have a team that is set up to be good for a long time,” Coomer said. “We have good young players and they are good people. And, we have a manager in Joe (Maddon) who is the best at dealing with dif-

ferent personalities that I have ever been around. Joe isn’t a yeller and a screamer, but what he does is make everyone accountable.”

The Cubs suffered a setback when young left-handed slugger Kyle Schwarber went down with a serious knee injury in the first week of the season. Although he is out until 2017, the Cubs have enough depth that they realistically could lead the National League in victories.

“The place where we will miss Schwarber is when we face tough right-handers,” Coomer said. “His bat from the left side would have balanced out the lineup.”

Of course, as Coomer said, a team can be the best in terms of number of victories during the regular season, and feature as good a manager as there is in the game, yet the playoffs become a different animal.

“Last year, we knocked St Louis out and we had 100,000 people waiting outside the stadium when we finished it,” he said. “Everything went in our favor.

“Then we played the Mets, (Daniel) Murphy was hitting everything out of the park and their pitching staff shut us down. Nothing went right for us.”

Coomer played for what perhaps was one of the most talented teams in baseball history, the 2002 Yankees.

“We had an all-star at every position and an all-star on the mound every day,” he said. “We got beat

by Anaheim in the playoffs. Their bullpen was very good against us, and it did not work out.”

In addition to watching the Cubs’ young talent develop, Coomer has the opportunity to see one of the most remarkable pitchers ever in the game take the ball every fifth day. That, of course, is Jake Arrieta.

“The only right-handed pitcher that I’ve seen that I think compares to Jake is Pedro (Martinez), and if Roger (Clemens) heard me say that, he’d probably be mad,” Coomer said. “I really don’t think right-handed hitters see the ball off Jake.”

Indeed, in many of Arrieta’s starts, it is difficult to recall more than a couple of balls being hit well off him.

Whether Arrieta continues his virtually impossible pace, whether the Cubs’ young talent continues to mature and develop, Coomer is happy to be there helping describe what is transpiring. He takes nothing for granted, however.

“Every day there are some things I wish I had said on the air, or wish I had said differently,” he said. “I always ask Pat (Hughes) his opinion, especially on the play-byplay I do. I want to know what he thinks.

“I was a competitive guy when I played third base. I’m competitive in the booth, too.”

Bill McKeon named SXU defensive coordinator SUBMITTED REPORT CHICAGO – Just a couple of months after being inducted into the Saint Xavier University Athletics Hall of Fame, former Joliet Catholic standout quarterback/wingback Bill McKeon has been hired to join Cougars coach Mike Feminis’ staff.

McKeon will serve as the defensive coordinator. He brings a wealth of experience both from his playing career at Saint Xavier as well as assistant coaching stints at SXU and neighboring Brother Rice High School over the past six years. He was also a part-time assistant coach for the team that won Saint Xavier’s first national championship in 2011.

“We are ecstatic to have Billy

come back to us in a full-time role and are looking forward to him doing a fantastic job as our defensive coordinator,” Feminis said. “Billy has a great mind for the game of football and, even though he previously coached and played on the offensive side, I believe the transition he’s making to defense will be relatively smooth because of the coaches he’ll be surrounded by which are guys he played with and enjoyed tremendous success.

“I have no doubt the passion and energy that Billy will bring to the table every day on the field and as a recruiter will allow SXU to remain one of the top small college football programs in the country.”

McKeon, one of the most versatile

players ever to wear a JCA uniform, was a receiver and return specialist for Saint Xavier from 2006 to ’09.

During his playing career, SXU went 40-11 overall record, won the MidStates Football Association Mideast League title in 2009, boasted the program’s first perfect regular season (11-0 in 2009) and made three NAIA Football Championship Series appearances, including trips to the national semifinals in 2006 and 2009.

McKeon was named a College Fanz NAIA First-Team All-American in 2009 and an honorable-mention All-American in 2008. He also was a first-team selection on the MSFA All-Mideast League Team in 2008 and 2009 and a second-team selection in 2007.

He ranks No. 2 all-time at Saint Xavier in career receptions (257), No. 5 in career touchdowns (33) and No. 7 in career all-purpose yards (4,146) and also is tied at No. 3 for rushing touchdowns in a season (10) in 2009.

In February, he was inducted into the SXU Athletics Hall of Fame.

“It is a great privilege and dream come true for me to join the SXU staff,” McKeon said. “I have developed a great friendship with the staff over the years and I look forward to continuing to build on that. I’m ecstatic about getting back around the players, building those relationships and working toward our one goal of winning another national championship.”

Patrick, who was inside the top 10 when she was hit by another car and turned into Kenseth, who went airborne, said the potential rain intensified the racing.

“We all raced to the halfway, then we all raced to the rain that was coming, then we all raced to the end,” she said. “It was like the whole race, you spent it racing like it was the end.

There was no moments to relax at all.

I’m sure that kind of expanded people’s comfort zones at the end of the race because we were already so used to running close.

“Some people took it over the edge.”

Cubs comeback falls short in extras Eaton’s bat and defense lead White Sox

By TONI GINNETTI tginnetti@suntimes.com Colorful “off color” suits, mandated by manager Joe Maddon for the road trip to Pittsburgh, had most of the Cubs smiling Sunday, even after a sad ending to their four-game win streak.

Red-white-and-blue sport coats for some, or camouflage ensembles for others [all by individual choice] are part of the manager’s “keep it fun” approach to a long Matt Sczcur season.

It never takes away from the serious part of the game, nor how his team continues to keep opponents on edge even if they have a lead.

The Atlanta Braves earned the 4-3 victory in 10 innings – but it took that long because their 3-0 lead vanished in the eighth and ninth.

“We go into every game with a good feeling,” said Matt Sczcur, who scored the first Cubs run with a pinch-hit bunt with one out in the eighth. “Our lineup is pretty stacked. Anyone can hit a homer even in the wind. So the job is to get on base and put it together.”

The Cubs had only two hits off Braves starter Julio Teheran through seven.

But that changed when Jim Johnson (two runs on two hits in 1/3 inning) and

Arodys Vizcaino (one unearned run on two hits) replaced him.

Vizcaino was the unlikely winner despite costing his team the tying run in the ninth with a wild pickoff throw to first that allowed Ben Zobrist (walk) to reach third.

Zobrist scored on Addison Russell’s two-strike single past a drawn in infield.

The irony was that Russell’s error fielding a hard-hit ground ball from Adonis Garcia in the sixth led to one of the two runs the Braves scored in the innning.

“It was hard hit, but no excuses,” Russell said. “I should make that play.

Luckily we got a double play after that.

When you have guys who keep battling, that picked me up. That’s a cool thing to see.”

Starter John Lackey was a different pitcher than the one who gave up six runs in 52/3 innings his last time out.

He didn’t allow a hit until the fifth when a leadoff double by Kelly Johnson turned into the first run. Lackey gave up only two more hits through eight innings, a season high for him and his longest outing since last August in a game against Miami.

He struck out only two, his fewest since May 23, 2015 against Kansas City, but in the raw Wrigley Field conditions, “I was definitely pitching to contact,” Lackey said. “Go ahead and try to hit it.”

BALTIMORE – Does “eventful” aptly describe Adam Eaton’s spring?

Let’s see, there was recovery from shoulder surgery, an ill-advised twitter post, a misinterpreted comment about 14-year-old Drake LaRoche being a team leader and, on top of all that, a Adam Eaton position change.

“It was a sloppy spring, for sure,’’ Eaton says.

To Eaton’s credit, he put his head down and sorted things out, trying to figure out where he might have gone wrong. He embraced the move from center field to right, giving way to a more experienced Austin Jackson. He talked to veteran catcher Alex Avila about dealing with the media. And as the White Sox’ head-turning April passed with a club-tying record 17 wins and into May with a 7-1 victory Sunday over the Baltimore Orioles, Eaton was one of the biggest reasons with a steady bat at the top of the lineup and defense in right field like nobody else in baseball is playing.

“You grow from those moments and learn from them and try to get better from mistakes you make,’’ Eaton

said. “There were hard times with the shoulder and rehab and the longevity of the injury. Through all the media stuff Alex helped me through that, just understanding what media does and how media portrays certain things and showing me you can’t make everybody happy in this world. I give credit to my teammates and the organization. They’ve made it easier.’’

Eaton’s defense in right, coupled with Jackson’s in center, are only two reasons why the Sox (18-8) are easier on the eyes in 2016. After playing center his first two seasons with the Sox (and being a Gold Glove finalist in his first), Eaton is running down fly balls all over right, keeping singles to singles on balls that would have been doubles with Avisail Garcia in right and throwing runners out with a strong, accurate, fully healed left arm.

Eaton has six outfield assists, the most in baseball, and went into Sunday’s game with 13 defensive runs saved, the most by any player at any position in either league. Stephen Piscotty was second with seven.

“He looks great over there,’’ Sox outfielders coach Daryl Boston said.

“He gets great jumps off the bat, he’s going back on balls better than it seemed like he did in center. He’s made a smooth transition over there, that’s for sure.’’

TALLADEGA, Ala. – Brad Keselowski won a demolition derby at Talladega Superspeedway, where multiple wrecks caused two cars to go airborne and led to millions of dollars in damage to race teams.

Keselowski’s cruise to the checkered flag was anticlimactic Sunday compared to all the other trouble.

“Racing has always been that balance of daredevils and chess players, this has always been more of a daredevil-type track,” said Keselowski.

Chris Buescher’s car flipped three times in an early crash, and Matt Kenseth was turned upside down in the waning laps. In Kenseth’s accident, Danica Patrick hit hard into an energy-absorbing wall that seemed to buckle upon impact. She appeared shaken after the hit.

“I would say that’s probably the most scared, trying to hop out of a car with the fire on the inside. I haven’t had fire on the inside before,” she

in the final 28 laps. And, as Keselowski crossed the finish line, another wreck in the back of the pack punctuated the sloppy day. NASCAR’s box score showed 35 of the 40 cars were involved in some sort of accident.

Only 21 of the 40 cars finished on the lead lap, and 12 cars were ruled out of the race.

Second-place finisher Kyle Busch said he looked in his rearview mirror at one point and only saw four cars without some sort of damage “I hate it. I’d much rather be at home,” said Busch, the reigning Sprint Cup Series champion. “I’ve got a win. I don’t need to be here.”

Austin Dillon finished third and said he enjoyed the race, even though it was nerve-wracking. Dillon was in his own horrific crash at Daytona last July and said the style of racing at restrictor-plate tracks creates an atmosphere of danger.

“We all have to do it. I don’t know how many really love it,” Dillon said.

“I know our mom’s, wives and girlfriends don’t like it. We don’t like to

Bears know what type of players they want Bears’ draft picks

By ADAM L JAHNS ajahns@suntimes.com Bears general manager Ryan Pace said coach John Fox would stop in his office last season and make a demand.

Fox would say, “Hey, I want throwback players,” Pace said, smiling.

It was a description Pace used to encapsulate inside linebacker Nick Kwiatkoski, a productive player from West Virginia who was one of three fourth-round selections made by the Bears during Day 3 of the draft Saturday.

But it also was a reflection of the overhaul of the Bears’ roster, particularly on defense, where three new starters were added in free agency and where six of their nine draft picks from this year play.

The Bears keep adding players that fit their new brand under Pace and Fox. After a season together, Pace’s personnel department understands Fox’s coaching staff’s preferences much better, and vice versa.

“The common trait with all these guys I would say is toughness and instincts,” Pace said at Halas Hall after the draft concluded.

Steps to combat burning mouth Dear Dr. K: For some time, I’ve had a burning and tingling in my mouth. My dentist and doctor seem to be mystified.

What could be causing my symptoms, and what can I do?

Dear Reader: Several things might be causing these bothersome symptoms. Some that come to mind are nutritional deficiencies – particularly of B vitamins, iron and zinc. These problems can be detected by simple blood tests.

Medicines that cause the mouth to become dry (due to decreased saliva production) can result in mouth irritation.

There are too many of these medicines to list here, but check a reliable website that provides information about the drugs you may be taking and their side effects.

Sometimes a person can develop an allergy to dentures and related adhesive creams, toothpastes or mouthwashes, which can cause irritation of the tissues of the mouth. You can experiment by seeing what happens when you stop using one of these potential allergy triggers (and substituting a different brand). One particular brand of toothpaste once caused such symptoms in me.

Conditions that damage small nerves, such as diabetes, can cause mouth pain.

So can mouth infections, particularly with fungus (yeast).

There also is a condition called burning mouth syndrome (BMS) that produces a burning – sometimes scalding – sensation on the lips and tongue and throughout the mouth. In BMS, the pain is present for at least some part of every day, the tissues of the mouth look normal (not irritated or inflamed) to the doctor or dentist, and the conditions I have mentioned already are not present. So that may explain why your dentist and doctor are mystified.

We don’t know what causes BMS. Some

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff think it is a psychiatric condition, but I’m dubious about that. I think when doctors don’t understand the cause of a person’s symptoms, we sometimes think (and say to our patient) the symptoms are just imaginary.

That may make us feel better, but it doesn’t make the patient feel so great. And if there really is a problem that we’re ignoring, we have failed.

If I had to bet on what causes BMS, it would be this: subtle damage of the main nerve that detects pain in the mouth, the trigeminal nerve. Indeed, one study provides support for that theory.

Low doses of tricyclic drugs, certain medicines often used for seizures and some pain-killing medicines and creams applied directly to the parts of your mouth that hurt all may help.

There are steps you can take to reduce your mouth discomfort. The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research recommends the following to keep symptoms at bay: • Sip water frequently.

• Suck on ice chips.

• Avoid irritating substances: hot, spicy foods; mouthwashes with alcohol; and acid foods such as citrus fruits and juices.

• Chew sugarless gum.

• Avoid alcohol and tobacco.

Last week, we looked at declarer taking the initiative, analyzing the auction to work out which defender had a key missing honor. But what is good for the declaring goose is also good for the defending ganders.

In today’s deal, how should the defense prevail against three notrump after West leads the spade eight?

The auction was straightforward.

South’s one-no-trump response showed 6-9 (or a poor 10) points and no four-card major.

West carefully leads a top-ofnothing spade eight -- only lead fourth-highest with at least one honor in the suit. South wins the first trick and plays a diamond, hoping to take three spades, four diamonds and three clubs. But East should see how to defeat the contract.

Given that South has the spade ace and king, seven points, he cannot also hold the heart ace. So East should take the first diamond and shift to the heart three, the low card from length saying that he has honors in this suit and is trying to take tricks in it.

West will win with his ace and return the five, giving the defenders one diamond and four hearts.

Note that if East ducks his diamond ace for two rounds, hoping to get a signal from his partner on the third round, it is too late. Declarer will run for home with three spades, two diamonds and four clubs.
