JOLIET – Will County’s 911 board has drafted a consolidation plan for reducing its emergency dispatch centers from six to three, as mandated by the state, and will likely vote on a final version at its next board meeting.

Under the plan, the Eastcom center in Crete, Lincolnway center in Frankfort, and centers in Romeoville and the Will County Sheriff’s Office would close.

The draft document included in the board’s agenda packet at Thursday’s meeting also noted the construction of the Will County Sheriff’s Office Laraway Road facility, which would incorporate agencies from the shuttered centers.

The 911 board must submit a report to the state by July, WESCOM Director

Steve Rauter said.

Plans are moving forward despite recent outcry from some police and fire agencies within the Western Will County Communications Center – known as WESCOM – about the county’s plan to pay for the new building.

WESCOM agencies are still paying off debt associated with the $5 million dispatch center in Plainfield, built in 2014 to consolidate agencies, and are upset that agencies in eastern Will County appear to be getting a free ride.

Rauter spoke little at Thursday’s meeting about the issue but did note Illinois government is partly at fault for WESCOM agencies having to pick up the tab years ago.

The state has swept since 2009 about $51 million from the 911 fund, he said, generated by the 911 surcharge rate of 87 cents that appears on telephone bills.

Illinois would have divvied out about $5 million to Will County during the past seven years if it hadn’t swept those funds, he said.

Board Chairwoman Julie PonceDoyle said the 911 board recently received about $734,000 from the state for the wireless surcharge fund, but is still owed about $2.1 million.

In other news, the board honored several 911 dispatchers Thursday, including Jamie VanByssum, who was honored with the title of Telecommunicator of the Year for her work with the Joliet Police Department’s dispatch center.

Nominees for the honor included Angela Trevillan, with Romeoville 911; Lisa Costa, with Lincolnway in Frankfort; and LeEtta Horath and Elizabeth Valencia with the Will County Sheriff’s Office. All were honored as well Thursday.

Joliet teacher competes on Jeopardy Teacher plans to use grant money for educational tools

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Joliet teacher will compete in the “Jeopardy!” Teachers Tournament that begins next week.

Kaberi Chakrabarty, a Sator Sanchez Elementary School bilingual teacher, is one of the contestants in a tournament that will begin airing May 2. The show airs locally on WLS at 3:30 p.m. according to a news release.

Chakrabarty will appear in the quarterfinals May 6.

“Everybody at [Joliet Public Schools District 86], everybody at the school has been nothing but supportive,” Chakrabarty said. “I’ve had so many messages and so many encouraging comments, and I couldn’t possibly ask for a more supportive community to be a part of.”

Some of her students know, but a few are a little unclear on the concept, she said.

“I had an older child tell me this morning – he had heard about it – he asked me if I was going to be on TV and I said yes.

He asked me when and I told him. And he said ‘Oh that’s when I watch ‘SpongeBob [SquarePants],’ ” Chakrabarty said.

“So I guess I’ve lost him as viewer,” she joked.

“Jeopardy!” Teachers Tournament is presented by Farmers Insurance in affiliation with Farmers Insurance Thank America’s Teachers program, according to the news release. The two-week event features educators facing off for $100,000 and a spot in the next Tournament of Champions.

“I would get together with my friends and we would look at different topics that would come up and study,” Chakrabarty said about her preparation for the show. “I don’t know how much good it did, I can’t conclusively say ‘Boy, I’m really glad I did that.’ But I’m sure it helped in an overall way.”

Farmers Insurance, through the Thank America’s Teachers program, will present each contestant with a $2,500 educational grant to fund classroom projects.

Chakrabarty said she plans to use the grant money for “manipulatives” or tools that students use with their hands. She said bilingual students can benefit because it helps them have multiple ways to access the information.

“Not just from the teacher or just from reading – although those are valuable things to do – but also from being able to play with something or being able to hear something. Anything kinesthetic like that,” she said.

More than 400 pieces of art were on display and for sale.

It was a special kind of art show Thursday evening at the Joliet Area Historical Museum.

Amanda Olsen of Joliet said she came out of interest in the artists.

“I work with people with special needs,” she said, “and I was really interested in the art that people with disabilities create. It’s really amazing. I already bought two pieces.”

Looking around at the paintings on the wall, she added, “Some of them, if they can’t communicate, they can express themselves with their art.”

The show displayed the art of clients of Cornerstone Services, an agency that serves people with disabilities.

One of the newer services is an art studio at Cornerstone’s facility on Joyce Road.

The results were surprising to a number of people visiting the show held at the Joliet Area Historical Museum.

“I’m impressed. It’s beautiful,” said Kathy Ruzicka of Plainfield.

“Just the amount of talent – it surprises me.”

The art show spread over three floors of the museum. Artworks included photographs, jewelry, baskets, painted gourds and loom art.

The Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce & Industry also held its after-hours event at the museum.

“It’s very relaxed,” said Cody Brestan of Crest Hill. “Everybody’s friendly here. I’m surprised also how talented the artists are. We bought one piece and are planning to buy another.”

Brian Turner of Minooka, whose paintings were on display, also was impressed with the event. “I like it here – all of the paintings and all of the people,” he said.

“The Greatest Baseball Picture Ever Painted” is being auctioned to raise money for capital improvements, board Chairwoman Peg Mitchell said.

The current high bid is $40,000. Bidding closes Saturday.

The Joliet Elks never imagined parting with it. But Mitchell said the city of Joliet has told the Elks it needs to tear down its former motel, now closed. The cost of doing so exceeds the Elks’ budget, she said.

And speaking of budgets, that demolition expense doesn’t include the funds the Elks need for regular maintenance. For instance, Mitchell said the water heater recently went out.

“The building is very old,” she said.

“It seems every time something goes bad, it’s $5,000.”

Overseeing the auction is Robert Edward Auctions in New Jersey, whom the Elks contacted in late 2015, said Brian Dwyer, president of the auction facilitator. Dwyer said the painting is significant for several reasons.

“It sells for hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of dollars,” Dwyer said.

The second noteworthy baseball player in the painting is Christy Mathewson, a former pitcher for the New York Giants. The artist is Fletcher Ransom, a commercial illustrator who lived part of his life in Joliet. For

18 years, Ransom worked at the former Joliet calendar factory, the Gerlach Barklow Co. The Elks painting is one of the few he created with a sports theme.

According to the Robert Edward Auctions website, bidding started at $15,000. Dwyer is pleased with the results so far.

“Really our goal is to offer the painting on behalf of the Elks so that they can further the great work they do in the community,” Dwyer said. “And at the same time, we can offer a great piece to our clientele.”

Mitchell said Barklow donated the painting to the Elks in the late 1960s to early 1970s when the Elks moved from downtown Joliet to its present location.

“A member from Fletcher Ransom’s family offered to buy it from us many years ago for a minimal amount, but we would not even consider selling it – until recently, when things started going bad.”

Because of its large size – 70 inches by 50 inches – it’s impractical for a typical living room. Mitchell said perhaps a museum would want it.

Lincoln-Way D-210 board absences draw community concern

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – As Lincoln-Way District 210 tries to resolve its financial crisis, some residents have been concerned about the attendance of its board members.

“There is a lot of big stuff going on here and I must admit that it’s very evident that board members are missing tonight,” a speaker said during public comment at an April 20 board meeting, where board members Arvid Johnson and Ronald Lullo were missing. “And there have been several board members missing over the past handful of meetings.”

Johnson – originally appointed to the board in 2008 – has the most absences so far for this year, with four of seven meetings missed between Jan. 28 and April 20.

Although he missed the most meetings of any board member in 2015 (with seven absences out of 21 meetings), board Vice President Christine Glatz, who joined the board in 1993, also has

missed many meetings and has consistently missed either the most or tied with a former board member for missing the most from 2008 to 2014.

In 2015, she missed six of 21 meetings, and in 2014 she missed 10 of 19 meetings, the most she’s missed since at least 2008.

Emails were sent to Johnson and Glatz seeking comment about their absences, but board President Dee Molinare responded on their behalf via email. She stated the board takes member attendance seriously and members attend as many meetings as possible.

When unable to attend, board members remain informed by reviewing packet materials and communicating with the president and superintendent to learn what was discussed or decided.

“Over the last year, we have had a number of additional meetings – including special meetings and public hearings – added to the board schedule, which can make it even more difficult to balance work, family and board obligations,” Molinare wrote in the

email.

The board “fully affirms that physical attendance is superior,” and members are encouraged to attend as many meetings as possible, she wrote in the email.

The school board consists of seven members each elected to four-year terms. Members serve without pay, according to the Board of Education page on the Lincoln-Way District’s website.

Illinois School Code does not show any requirements about board member attendance.

The issue is a gray area, said Ben Schwarm, Illinois Association of School Boards deputy executive director. He said there’s nothing specifically in state statue about board members being required to attend a certain number of meetings.

“We have not heard of this as a big issue,” Schwarm said.

Between 2012 and 2014, Glatz missed the most meetings, and was absent from seven of 20 meetings in 2013 and seven of 20 in 2012. Other members either missed three or five in those

years.

Glatz also tied with former member David Izzo – who was replaced by Molinare when she was appointed in 2011 – for absences in 2011, 2010 and 2008. She and Izzo missed five out of 22 meetings, five of 21 and six of 21 respectively in those years.

In 2009, she missed the most meetings, with eight absences out of 23 meetings.

Some of the meetings Glatz and Johnson missed in 2015 included ones on a district financial health and enrollment update, and response to the community about school closing scenarios.

For some meetings Glatz missed between 2012 and 2008, she was absent for action on budget adoptions, audit reports and transfer of interests from one fund to another.

Since the Lincoln-Way board decided last August to close North high school, the district has attracted heavy criticism and hundreds of Freedom of Information Act requests from residents, as well as a lawsuit.

Feds to turn over evidence in Joliet sex abuse case

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Attorneys for a Joliet woman facing sexual abuse charges will be given access to evidence used in a federal child pornography trial.

Attorney Steve Landis told Judge Carla Alessio Policandriotes on Thursday that federal prosecutors will allow them to review files from the John Gabriel case that have been kept under seal.

Gabriel, 80, was convicted last year of manufacturing child pornography for making videos allegedly showing his girlfriend, Margarita Hernandez, having sex with teenage boys. Landis is representing Hernandez, who is

charged with aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

Hernandez, 36, who was a Troy Township Democratic committeewoman, was arrested in October 2012 after Gabriel came under investigation by the FBI for videos recorded at their home in the 6900 block of Monmouth Drive in Joliet. Gabriel, a retired journalist for Margarita The Times Weekly and Hernandez Weekly Reporter, will be sentenced to at least 15 years in prison.

Minooka D-201 board talks needed repairs

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media Correspondent MINOOKA – At its regular meeting Wednesday, the Minooka School District 201 Board of Education voted to begin mandated life and safety projects at its seven school buildings.

During its March meeting, the board reviewed the repair list, and at that time, the projects were split into three categories: general contractor, roofing and paving. On April 22, the district conducted a bid opening to numerous contractors that the district architect, STR Partners, has worked with in the area, with hopes to approve all work during the Wednesday meeting, according to Superintendent Kris Monn.

One snag in the otherwise smooth bidding plan was when the district approved the lowest roofing repair bid from JL Adler for $225,970, but the day of the board meeting, Monn received a call from JL Adler and discovered it missed a critical allowance in the bid, and the bid would need to increase by $30,000. This put JL Adler just under

the second-place bid.

Monn recommended to the board the bid be considered noncompliant and the work be awarded to the next-lowest bidder, which was Crowther Roofing at $259,750.

President Jim Satorius asked the board to table a vote on the work until May, so officials could speak with the district’s attorney about financial logistics related to selecting a bidder and settle the matter.

Monn stated that the roof work discussed Wednesday was part of needed repairs identified by a life and safety study, while roof damage from the 2015 hail storm and due to winds from area tornadoes are a separate matter covered by insurance.

The board did approve a bid for paving work to Accu-Paving, which was the lone bidder, for $126,000. Work will begin after the end of the school year.

Monn said in the meeting that the general contractor work did not receive any bids, so the district will likely separate the jobs into specific trades and open for bids for those jobs for masonry, tuck pointing and plumbing.

Carpal tunnel therapy remedies wrist pain

By Gina Kraman Wrist pain, numbness, tingling, and weakness in grip strength may be signs of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), according to doctors at Ostir Physical Medicine in Joliet. CTS develops when the median nerve, which travels from the forearm into the hand, becomes pressed at the wrist.

“CTS has become one of the most widespread occupational health problems. It affects millions of people every year. “CTS is an entrapment median neuropathy or pressure on the median nerve, which is located at the carpal tunnel region of the wrist, and is usually due to chronic overuse at the wrist

Compression of the median nerve typically occurs at the wrist, but may also occur at the neck or shoulders, known as Double Crush Syndrome. Evaluating and diagnosing specifically where the location of nerve compression occurs is essential to treating and resolving chronic wrist pain and CTS.” Ostir use several different types of therapy, including manual therapy (massage, wrist traction, and chiropractic techniques), carpal tunnel injections, wrist bracing, and cold laser therapy.

FRANKFORT – The Frankfort Village Board approved Monday a balanced budget for fiscal 2016-17.

The General Corporate Budget has revenues of $14.37 million and expenses of $13.64 million.

The Utility Budget has revenues of $8.48 million and expenses of $6.25 million. The village’s fiscal year begins May 1.

“The budget continues Frankfort’s tradition of providing quality service coupled with conservative fiscal management,” Frankfort Mayor Jim Holland said.

As part of the budget process, the board also approved Corporate (village) Capital expenses of $3.38 million and Utility (water/sewer) Capital expenses of $18.53 million. These budgets fund buildings, machinery and long-term projects that are not part of the day-to-day operations of the village.

In the 2016-17 budget year, the village will continue with a variety of public services and initiatives that

include: the planning for redevelopment of village-owned downtown property, 911 center consolidation, and Steger and St. Francis Road construction.

The village will also begin construction on the Waste Water Treatment Plant project identified in the village’s 20-year Facility Plan.

The multi-year, $60 million project calls for closing the North and West plants and consolidating treatment at the Regional Plant to satisfy future growth needs, to meet new regulations and to upgrade aging facilities.

“The Village of Frankfort, through our conservative budgeting practices, will continue to provide essential services to our residents including: progressive land use planning, quality police protection, code enforcement, branch and leaf pickup and public grounds and street maintenance. Our board understands that the public provides us with limited resources and we spend it very carefully to bring the most effective services to our residents,” Holland said.

Corvette club to mark 40th year at car show If you go

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A local Corvette club will mark its 40th anniversary Sunday while holding an annual show and parts swap.

The Corvette Show & GM Parts Swap will be 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Hawk Chevrolet, 2001 W. Jefferson St., Joliet.

In addition to more than 50 Corvettes on display, the event will include a barbecue, live music and a lot of car talk.

“We expect north of 1,000 people,” said Frank Garrone, president of Corvettes Unlimited, the club that puts on the event each year at the Chevrolet dealership.

The Corvettes on display will be from different eras of the classic Chevrolet sports car that was introduced in the 1953 model year. Trophies will be awarded.

The club was formed in May 1976, Garrone said. He missed that meeting but was at the next one in June.

The club was formed in a time before the now-popular cruise nights were held, but in an era when enthusiasm for the automobile was probably stronger than it is today.

“At that time in the ’70s, everybody was still in the age of being a gearhead from the ’50s and ’60s,” Garrone said.

“People then were all car enthusiasts.

A lot has changed in the 40 years of the club’s existence. While cruise nights offer opportunities to show off a Corvette, Garrone said members tended to drive their cars more often decades back.

Back then the engine was more acces-

sible to the do-it-yourself mechanic, and local tracks offered chances to test the car’s capabilities.

“You can’t work on them anymore,” Garrone said. “But I remember going with buddies to a garage, tuning up the car, and going to the track.”

Garrone said he still has a 1966 Corvette that he bought the year the club was formed. He also has done a lot of driving with it. The car has 165,000 miles on it today.

The club today has 30 members. While members will have Corvettes on display, only nonmembers’ cars will be judged in the contest.

People who come to the event will judge the cars. There also will be a Dealer’s Award presented by Hawk Chevrolet. There is a $5 admission charge, and the money goes to the Joliet Area Community Hospice. Music will be provided by the Baloney Brothers, who play blues, jazz, swing and oldies.

Six, including schoolchildren, taken to hospitals after Lockport bus crash

By ANNA SCHIER aschier@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – Six people were taken to area hospitals Thursday afternoon after a school bus was involved in a crash in Lockport.

The incident occurred at 3:24 p.m. at Cedar Road and Victoria Crossings Drive, according to Homer Township Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Edward McCormack.

The Homer School District 33C bus was traveling south on Cedar Road, McCormack said, when a car going east on Victoria Crossings Drive pulled out in front of it, which resulted in the crash.

The bus had a full passenger load of children at the time, according to McCormack.

in the vehicle suffered significant – but not life-threatening – injuries, McCormack said.

They required extrication and were taken to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox.

The bus driver and three children sustained minor injuries and were brought to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet.

The car was heavily damaged, according to McCormack, and the extent of damage to the bus was not immediately clear.

The incident remains under investigation, said McCormack, who did not know if anyone had been charged in connection with the crash.

A call to the Lockport Police Department was not immediately returned Thursday evening.

During National Child Abuse Prevention Month, there is much emphasis on the horrible realities of the crime. Dr. Natalia Tapia, director of the Lewis University Criminal Social Justice Graduate Program, noted statistics indicate that physically abused children’s birth parents are the perpetrators of the abuse in the majority of the reported cases.

Tapia offered one preventative measure that appears to make an impact. She said, “Assistance by grandparents may play a role in preventing abuse. Generally, the presence of grandparents is associated with fewer incidents of severe child abuse.” It won’t prevent all types of child abuse, but it can help in turning the tide to protect children.

Tapia advises concerned adults to be on the lookout for all types of child abuse, even the more difficult ones to detect, like child neglect. Deficits in meeting a child’s basic needs (basic physical health care,

supervision, nutrition, personal hygiene, emotional nurturing, education, or safe housing) constitute neglect.

The following signs may signal the presence of child abuse or neglect: the child shows sudden changes in behavior or school performance; has not received help for physical or medical problems brought to the parents’ attention; is always watchful; lacks adult supervision; has unexplained bruises or other marks noticeable after an absence from school; seems frightened of the parents and protests or cries when it is time to go home; shrinks at the approach of adults; abuses animals or pets; is frequently absent from school; begs or steals food or money; abuses alcohol or other drugs; states that there is no one at home to provide care.

Pride in their work

The art show is a culmination of a year of work, said Megan Gulick, one of the art instructors at Cornerstone.

Most of the proceeds from the sale of art go directly to the artist, although Cornerstone also gets a portion to help buy supplies for the program.

“All of this hard work we’ve done in the past year is paying off,” Gulick said at the art show Thursday evening. “The clients are coming and saying, ‘Look how many people showed up.’ ” Cornerstone Chief Executive Officer Ben Stortz said the event “shows off the talents and abilities of our clients.”

Stortz said the show and studio have been very helpful.

“We’ve seen such a change in our clients,” he said. “We’ve seen they have an interest in this. They take great pride in their work.”

“I have a good time painting,” he said. “I focus, and it helps me to use my hands. I’m happy to be here because I love to be painting.”

His specialty is acrylic painting.

Turner’s work includes a number of landscapes, some of which were in the show, but he does other things as well.

He pointed to one painting of a large eye staring from the canvas.

“I call it ‘Private Eye,’ ” he said with a smile.

Kathy Glyda of Plainfield was another artist in the studio that day.

She was working one of the several looms in the studio, weaving yarn into a future pillow cover.

Glyda said she became interested in looming when she saw it depicted in a TV show about the Old West.

“I started in 2014 on looming,” she said. “I’ve been so addicted to it. I love it.”

She started a business on Facebook and Pinterest called “Kathy’s Creative Crafts.”

“I’ve sold a lot of stuff,” Glyda said.

“I have my own studio in my basement.”

By JOHN O’CONNOR The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Gaileen Roberts’ daughter Jody has cerebral palsy, is quadriplegic and developmentally delayed. But she can live at home because her mother earns a taxpayer-subsidized $13 an hour as her caregiver.

Sometimes Roberts works overtime, and as of January, the federal government requires extra work be compensated at time-and-a-half pay, so the cashstrapped state of Illinois has banned all but emergency overtime pay beginning Sunday. That means Roberts can be paid to take care of her daughter in the morning, but another person must come in for the evening, when Jody returns from afternoon basic-skills training, so Roberts doesn’t go over her allotted time.

Where can she find someone to do physical, often unpleasant work for $13 an hour and part-time, at that?

“I’m pretty much going to quit looking,” said Roberts, who lives in western Illinois. “They’re not out there.”

Judge: Man suing Hastert can remain anonymous for now

CHICAGO – One day after a man publicly revealed himself as a sexual abuse victim of Dennis Hastert, a judge ruled Thursday that another victim does not have to reveal his name in a lawsuit that contends the former U.S. House Speaker hasn’t paid all the money promised in exchange for his silence.

U of Illinois union starts five-day strike

URBANA– A faculty union at the University of Illinois’ Champaign-Urbana campus planned a five-day strike after contract talks with the school Wednesday ended without a settlement.

Shawn Gilmore is president of the Nontenure Faculty Coalition Local 6546. He said union members voted “overwhelmingly” Wednesday evening to authorize

a five-day strike. The (Champaign) News-Gazette reported the strike was to start Thursday with picketing scheduled to start at 8 a.m. at the English Building.

The union went on a two-day strike earlier this month.

The strike would cover remaining class days this semester, through Wednesday.

Ex-officer charged in Ohio with wife’s death

ELK GROVE VILLAGE – A suburban Cincinnati man charged with murder in his wife’s shooting death is a former suburban Chicago police officer.

Elk Grove Village Police Chief Stephen Schmidt said 57-year-old Jeffrey Hawkins resigned in 1999 when the department started investigating a complaint that he used unnecessary force during an arrest.

Hawkins surrendered to officers at his home Monday after calling 911 and telling the dispatcher he just killed his wife. An Ohio judge set bond at $3 million Tuesday pending grand jury action next week.

Hawkins was with Elk Grove Village police from 1990 to 1999. A spokeswoman for Chicago’s Field Museum said he worked as a security officer there from 1999 to 2003.

‘El Chapo’ associate pleads guilty in Chicago court

CHICAGO – A reputed associate of Mexican cartel leader Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman has pleaded guilty to helping move more than $1.5 million in drug money between the U.S. and Mexico.

Edgar Manuel Valencia Ortega entered the plea Wednesday in Chicago federal court. The Chicago Tribune reported that he admitted to laundering money related to sale of cocaine in Chicago and Los Angeles. Prosecutors said Ortega isn’t expected to face other charges in connection with importing the drug.

U.S. authorities said the 28-year-old Ortega’s nickname was “the Fox.” He faces up to 20 years in prison and is to be sentenced Aug. 3.

Speaking at a town hall-style event Wednesday at Stanford University, Boehner called front-runner Donald Trump his “texting buddy,” but offered a more graphic response when asked about Cruz.

“Lucifer in the flesh,” the former speaker said. “I have Democrat friends and Republican friends. I get along with almost everyone, but I have never worked with a more miserable son of a [expletive] in my life.”

His comments were first reported by Stanford’s student newspaper.

Yet those donors have largely shunned Ted Cruz and John Kasich, depriving each of them as much as $39 million in what has become a desperate final push to topple Trump.

Yet, donors who once gave as much as allowed by law to establishment favorites Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio have mostly disappeared from the political landscape, an Associated Press analysis of campaign finance records shows.

Less than 3 percent of the nearly 14,600 donors who gave the $2,700 limit to Bush or Rubio have also ponied up the maximum amount to Kasich or Cruz, the analysis found.

Clinton backers ‘feeling the Bern’ of Sanders supporters

By LISA LERER The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Nancy Schumacher said she just wanted to do her civic duty, and so she heeded the call to become a superdelegate for Hillary Clinton. But in the year of the angry voter, not even an administrative assistant from Elk River, Minnesota, can escape the outrage.

“Some of the (phone and email) messages called me names. Some of them called Hillary names. And others said I was a stupid [expletive] and something bad will happen to me,” said Schumacher, a Democratic committee member. “It’s kind of hard to take sometimes.”

Bernie Sanders defied expectations to turn his long-shot presidential bid into a real threat for the Democratic nomination. Now, as his path to the White House becomes all-but-impossible, some of his supporters are lashing out at a system they believe was engineered against them from the start.

While Sanders decries a “rigged” economy, some of his backers see signs of corruption everywhere – even in the party their candidate hopes to lead. Some have turned their frustration on superdelegates, the party insiders whose ability to back either candidate give them an outsized role in picking the nominee.

The superdelegates include public officials: governors, former presidents and even Sanders himself. But they also include people like Schumacher, volunteers who’ve generally stayed behind the scenes.

The Sanders campaign assures everyone that it doesn’t condone harassment.

Yet Schumacher said she’s received vitriolic

phone and email messages from self-identified Sanders backers and doesn’t quite understand how things got quite so nasty. Eight years ago, she backed Clinton but said she “cheerfully” switched to Illinois Sen. Barack Obama. She’d do the same, she said, if Sanders won the popular vote or pledged delegates from state primary elections.

“I got five emails on Easter Sunday. I mean, give me a break,” she said.

Barry Goodman, a personal injury lawyer in Detroit, suddenly found his firm’s Yelp business review page besieged by bad ratings.

“You deserve this rating. Why does some random lawyer get more sway than the citizens,” read one comment.

Gus Bickford, the former executive director of the Massachusetts Democratic Party, was taken aback by the threats that flowed into his inbox and onto his Facebook page.

“Someone put up a list of the superdelegates and a person from Rhode Island posted a response that basically said, ‘They should all be assassinated’ and then said ‘I’m only joking,’” recalled Bickford. “With the way people are talking, you never know who’s going to take something like that seriously.”

Bickford said many of the callers were Sanders supporters who asked him to side with the will of the people, even though Clinton narrowly won Massachusetts in March.

Democrats aren’t the only ones facing this kind of barrage: Some Republican delegates say they have also found themselves at the receiving end of death threats and other personal attacks from supporters of GOP front-runner Donald Trump.

Funding transportation starts with protecting road funds Asking Illinois taxpayers to pay more to support investments in the roads and bridges they travel on every day is a real challenge, as evidenced by the recent attention given to proposals to increase the state gas tax and to ask drivers to pay for the miles they travel.

The state’s ongoing budget stalemate is doing nothing to ease taxpayer frustration.

But there is a movement in Springfield we think can start to change the conversation over transportation investment. It starts with making sure the dollars intended to fix our infrastructure actually get spent on those projects.

For far too long in Illinois, that has not been the case. From 2003 to 2015, a whopping $6.4 billion in tax dollars collected for transportation infrastructure were diverted for other purposes.

That averages out to more than $500 million each year in dollars paid at the gas pump or through other fees that drivers paid, only to have them sent to

As co-chairs of the Transportation for Illinois Coalition, we wholeheartedly agree.

We applaud the Illinois House for

recently overwhelmingly approving HJRCA 36, an initiative led by Rep. Brandon Phelps and Sen. Bill Haine and championed by dozens of Democrats and Republicans alike. The measure would guarantee the money raised for road and other transportation purposes can only be used that way, creating a “lockbox” for these important infrastructure funds.

The next step is for the Illinois Senate to take up this measure soon. If it is approved by next week, the measure will go to the November ballot – and voters will be able to decide if this strong protection for infrastructure investment is added to the state constitution.

We have pushed for many years to make our infrastructure a top priority in Springfield and Washington.

Illinois is the nation’s transportation hub, carrying millions of people to and from work and freight and goods from around the world to their destinations to support our economy. Yet we are

facing a crisis in our transportation network’s condition that, without an influx of new dollars soon, will result in thousands more miles of roads and many more bridges in unacceptable condition.

We need to get serious about what it will take to fix our infrastructure challenges for the long term, and those will not be easy discussions. In the meantime, we can take a good first step by getting HJRCA 36 approved in the Senate and putting it on the fall ballot to ask voters the key question: Why can’t Illinois guarantee every dollar of road and bridge funding goes to fixing our roads and bridges?

Plainfield North track teams win titles

By JEFF DE GRAW– Shaw Media Correspondent PLAINFIELD – The four Plainfield high school girls and boys track and field teams gathered at Central on Thursday for the annual Stephen P. Hunt Memorial Invitational.

The meet is named after the former Plainfield High School science teacher and boys track coach, who was one of the victims during the 1990 Plainfield tornado.

The meet winner in each division has bragging rights in Plainfield, commonly known in track circles as Tracktown – Illinois.

In the boys portion of the meet, it was more about scoring points and winning the meet.

“The four boys coaches have formed such a great brotherhood among the schools,” North coach Tony Holler said. “The unity between the schools is what makes this meet so special. But make no mistake, we all want to win.”

In the final standings North edged South, 86–79, with East third (70) and Central fourth (37).

One of the most exciting races of the evening was the 4X100 meter relay where North edged South with a time of 42.86 to 42.94.

North’s team was anchored by senior Clay Paysen, who is running outdoor track for the first time in high school.

“I’m a lacrosse player, but the coaches convinced me to come out for track,” Paysen said. “I’ve never ran in the Hunt meet and to win is pretty special.”

North also had firsts from Jack Sebok in the 3,200 meter run (9:47.13), Jordan Gumila in triple jump (41’– 53/4”). Ari Ekowa won both shot put (48’–1”) and discus (154’–4”).

South senior John Partee had an outstanding meet anchoring the winning 4X800 and 4X400 relays and also winning the 1600 (4:26.96) and the 800 (1:58.21).

“John is tough,” South coach Jason Crowe said. “He works so hard, does what he has to do for the team and competes in every race. I’m pleased with how we competed tonight.”

“It was a good, tough day,” Partee said. “This will help me get prepared for sectional and state.”

The 100 meter dash provided the biggest surprise of the meet as Central junior Marcus Hayes, running in the slower heat, posted a time of 11.15

“That was fantastic,” Central coach Jon Pereiro said. “He had the opportunity to break through and he did.”

Central also received a win in the 400 meters from senior Justin Montalto (50.26) and Mike Lyons in high jump (6’–71/2”).

“I knew if I was close with 100 to go I could win it,” Montalto said. “This is a thrill to win at this meet against all the Plainfield schools.”

East had first place finishes from TJ Alexander in pole vault (13’–1”), Jamie Pringle in long jump (20’–51/2”), Prince Smith in the 300 hurdles (40.76) and the 4X200 relay (1:31.26) In the girls team title chase, North edged South by a score of 114.5 to 103.5, with East third (32.5) and Central fourth (21.5).

“This is an important meet to try and win,” North coach Tammy Gummerson said. “Our jumpers tonight were amazing. We doubled and tripled up people in events, because tonight, it was about the team score. I’m really excited about Juliana (Stogsdill) breaking the meet record in the 3200.”

Stogsdill, just a freshman, broke that meet record with a time of 11:10.01 in the 3200 meters and then came back with a victory in the 1,600 meters (5:27.32) as North also finished second and third in both races.

That was then. There is no such issue anymore. In fact, the Morrigans have enough players on their roster that they have started playing some B side matches as well this season.

“What happened was Lincoln-Way High School had a rugby club, and a lot of girls went on to college and then came back and played for us,” Forsythe said. “They already had knowledge of the sport, which helped. But along the way, we also started getting girls who never played at all, and they fell in love with it.”

The Morrigans have enjoyed a successful season, beginning with a 36-0 win over Mizzou during the Manhattan Irish Fest in early March. Morrigans player Anne Verbic called the Irish Fest match “our biggest match, our favorite one.”

Nebraska. Last weekend, they lost at Northshore, located north of Chicago, but they learned from the experience.

Northshore may be the best team the Morrigans ever have faced.

Games are played in two 40-minute halves, with a 10-minute halftime.

“Rugby impacts you more physically than other sports because of the amount of contact, but it’s a tradeoff,” Forsythe said. “You hurt more, but it’s also much more rewarding for me. You build camaraderie. You’re out there depending on each other so much. You feel a real responsibility to your teammates.

“So I would say starting this team was one of the best ideas I ever had in my life. And physically, I am in much better shape than I ever would have been if I hadn’t been playing the sport.”

The Morrigans have players ages 18 on up. Forsythe said there is another player two years older than her, “and she still will kick butt out there.”

Verbic, a school teacher and Joliet native, has been with the Morrigans for a year. Besides playing with other rugby teams, she formerly helped coach the girls high school team that drew players from the four Plainfield schools.

“I played with the Fox Valley Vixens for the last 2-3 years, and I used to play with the Plainfield Storm before that team folded,” she said. “I knew a few of the Morrigans. They are always welcoming new players, and I’m glad to be with them.

gans now, too. A lot of our girls have played college rugby. What really sets the Morrigans apart, though, is we are the only women’s team with a full-time coach in the state.”

COMPETITIVE AND FUN

That coach is David Harris-John.

Under his guidance, the Morrigans feel they have a team capable of advancing beyond the first round of the Division II playoffs for the first time. The playoff trail will end with the national tournament in Denver.

The Morrigans are hoping to attract a crowd for Saturday’s playoff game. It’s an opportunity for potential fans – and perhaps prospective players – who always wondered what the game is about to come out and see it firsthand.

Bridget Forsythe, a former basketball and softball player at Providence Catholic, was in her junior year at Illinois State University when some friends convinced her to join the ISU women’s rugby club team.

“From playing other sports and with the team aspect of the game, it came to me quickly,” she said. “The rest of it was learning a new set of rules, but being aggressive and wanting to make plays, it all clicked for me.”

After college, Forsythe moved back home to Manhattan.

“My cousin’s husband played for the local men’s team, the Shamrocks, and I watched them play,” she said. “I told my friend, Jenna Hall, that we should start a women’s team. She had been a good athlete growing up. She hadn’t ever played rugby, but she said she would help me get it started.”

That was 2003, the year the Manhattan-based County Will Morrigans were born. And look at them now. The Morrigans will host a Midwest Rugby Football Union Division II playoff game against Scylla from Milwaukee at 11 a.m. Saturday at Central Park in Manhattan.

Hall now works for the Secret Service.

“Jenna has moved on to bigger and better things,” Forsythe said with a laugh.

Meanwhile, at age 37, Forsythe still plays the physically demanding sport and also is secretary of the Morrigans’ board of directors.

“You have to have 15 people for a full team, and those first couple years we struggled to get people to games,” Forsythe said. “We would have to contact other teams and tell them we had only 10 or eight players, and we went from there. Sometimes, we had to borrow players from other teams.”

The second-year general manager had that for Georgia’s Leonard Floyd, and navigated the Bears through their first trade up in the first round in 20 years to select the outside linebacker ninth overall.

“We said all along we wanted to improve the athleticism and speed on our defense, and we’ve definitely done that with Leonard Floyd,” Pace said Thursday night. “This guy lines up all over the field for Georgia. We see him as an outside linebacker on our defense. He brings great athleticism for a guy that tall with that kind of length. He brings some juice to our defense that we need and will definitely help our pass rush.”

The Bears traded their 106th overall pick – one of two fourth-rounders – to the Buccaneers to move up to ninth to take Floyd, the 6-foot-6, 244-pounder who ran a 4.6 40-yard dash at the combine, which was fifth-best among linebackers. His vertical jump was second-best at his position and his broad jump ranked third.

Floyd was second-team All-Southeast Conference last season with 10.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks.

“They’re definitely going to see a lot of speed,” Floyd said of what Bears fans will see from him in Chicago.

Scouting reports question his strength and abilities against the run. Floyd said he wants to improve his power in the pass rush when he gets to Chicago, and Pace explained how Floyd’s length helps against bigger offensive lineen.

“One thing I like what he does is that he’s got such great length that guys don’t get into his body. When you see him playing the run on the edge of the defense, he uses his hands really well and he plays with such great separation that it’s hard for guys to get into him. I think that helps him a lot, even though he’s a little thinner framed.”

Coach John Fox is seeking a situational pass rusher to help the Bears’ sub package, and that’s where Floyd can help. The Bears had the fourth-worst defense on third down in the NFL last season and were 22nd in the league with 35 sacks. “[Fox has] been pounding the table to add these kind of guys for awhile, and we talk during the season: ‘Hey, Ryan, we gotta get off the field on third down, we gotta get off the field on third down,’ “ Pace said. “We needed guys to help us in that area and this is the type of player that can help that, add a major pass rush threat to our defense.”

Arrieta (5-0) gave up one run, three hits and four walks in five innings – the first run he allowed at home since July 25. Alex Presley’s fifth-inning RBI double ended Arrieta’s home scoreless streak at 522/3 innings, four outs shy of Ray Herbert’s major

league record set with the White Sox in 1962-63.

Arrieta’s streak of consecutive winning decisions is the longest since Jose Contreras of the White Sox won 17 in a row from August 2005 to July 2006, according to STATS. The Cubs have won in Arrieta’s last 18 starts, a team record.

Cubs catcher David Ross believed some perspective was needed.

“For him to have an off night, and he gave up one (run),” Ross said.

Arrieta’s streak of consecutive quality starts ended at 24, two shy of Bob Gibson’s record from 1967-68.

“I saw 92 pitches. I saw the Cubs trying to win a World Series. I saw the next five years of his career,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. “All that stuff mattered much more than breaking Gibson’s record.”

Cubs left fielder Kris Bryant left in the fifth after rolling his right ankle while running the bases two innings earlier. The team called it a “mild” sprain, but said Bryant was to undergo an MRI.

Chris Davis and Mark Trumbo hit consecutive third-inning homers for the Orioles, whose 8-1 record at Camden Yards is the best home mark in the major leagues.

Machado stopped an 0-for-17 slide with an RBI double in a four-run third inning against John Danks (0-4) and homered in the sixth off Jake Petricka.

Machado is batting .333 with a teamhigh seven homers.

Mychal Givens (2-0) pitched 11/3 scoreless innings to win in relief of Ty-

ler Wilson, who allowed two runs and four hits in 42/3 innings.

Danks gave up six runs and nine hits in six-plus innings. He has lost seven straight starts dating to Sept. 14.

‘Architectural icon’ preserved in photographs Lewis University student hopes her exhibit inspires people to save former Joliet prison

That was Pam Owen’s reaction when she saw Larissa Barnat’s photographs of the now-shuttered Joliet Correctional Center.

“What you see is the architectural detail,” said Owens, executive director of the Gaylord Building in Lockport.

“She took such beautiful artistic photos of such a high resolution.”

Barnat’s photographs are the subject of an exhibit at the Gaylord Building titled, “Unlocking the Past: Larissa Barnat’s Joliet Prison Photographs,” which runs through May 28.

The Gaylord Building is owned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

“It’s really beautiful,” Barnat said of the prison. “If you didn’t know the reference, you’d think it was a castle.”

However, Barnat didn’t immediately know her shots would be the focus of their own exhibit when she took them.

“I was contacted by the history department [of Lewis University] to take photos for them,” Barnat said, “and they decided they wanted to do a whole exhibit.”

Joliet Correctional Center, located on Collins Street, closed in 2002. It’s in deteriorating condition and fenced in to discourage vandalism.

“I couldn’t go inside,” Barnat said, “so I was limited to what I could photograph. ... I walked around and took pictures of the details and the structure I wanted to highlight the most. It was strong and powerful and in the best condition.”

To keep the chain-link fence out of the shots, Barnat stuck her lens through the fence’s openings. The overcast conditions made a good shooting day, she said, and the white skies put emphasis on the limestone and glass.

She felt the overall condition of the building was good, despite weathering and broken windows.

“This was the first time I’d ever photographed architecture. It was a good experience,” Barnat said. “I usually do people. I do a lot of portraits, and I make paintings of them.”

Photographing at the 25-acre prison site seemed an intimidating undertaking at first, said Dennis Cremin, Lewis University professor of history and director of the Lewis University history center, but Barnat narrowed her focus to the large administration center.

“Larissa focused on architectural details and made it a place that you really want to preserve,” Cremin said Cremin also works with the National Trust for Historic Preservation, a group desiring more involvement in advocacy, including in preserving the old Joliet prison. Barnat’s photographs comprise the first exhibit the Gaylord Building has mounted on the prison.

Cremin said. “It was designed by W.W. Boyington.”

William W. Boyington, Cremin said, was the first licensed architect in the state. Boyington also designed the Chicago Water Tower and the Hegeler Carus Mansion in LaSalle.

In addition, the Joliet prison has cultural significance, he said, made popular with such movies as “The Blues Brothers” and television series such as “Prison Break.”

For Alzheimer’s disease that begins later in life, as it does in most cases, a gene called apolipoprotein E (APOE4) is associated with greater risk for dementia.

If you inherit one copy of APOE4, your risk triples. If you have two copies, your risk is 10 to 15 times higher (this is rare).

But having APOE4 does not mean you definitely will develop dementia. Among people age 70 who have no signs of Alzheimer’s disease, about 25 percent have one or more copies of the risk gene. Nor does the absence of APOE4 protect you: About 35 percent of people with Alzheimer’s don’t carry the risk genes.

Some forms of Alzheimer’s disease begin early in life, even in a person’s 30s.

These forms are uncommon, but they more often run in families. The more common form of older-onset Alzheimer’s disease that typically begins after age 65 is what we’ve been talking about.

There are many diseases like older-onset Alzheimer’s disease in which a person’s risk is increased if a first-degree relative has the disease. Yet that does not mean a person with an affected relative is destined to get the disease – or that a person without an affected relative is guaranteed protection from the disease.

Dear Dr. K: My father has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Does that mean my children and I eventually will develop Alzheimer’s too?

Dear Reader: Many people worry if a parent had Alzheimer’s disease, they are doomed. But that’s not true. Having a first-degree relative (parent, sibling or child) with Alzheimer’s disease increases a person’s risk by about 30 percent. That sounds like a lot, and therefore sounds scary. But what you really want to know is: What is my risk in the first place? If it’s a very low number, then raising a low risk by 30 percent won’t be a big deal.

Here are the numbers. If you are age 65, the risk of being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s is 2 percent per year. (This also means a 98 percent chance per year of not developing Alzheimer’s.) In absolute numbers, a 2 percent annual risk means two out of 100 65-year-olds will develop dementia every year.

Family history raises the 2 percent annual risk by about 30 percent, to 2.6 percent per year. That means going from 20 cases in a group of 1,000 to 26 in 1,000, or six additional cases in 1,000.

Age raises the chance of Alzheimer’s more than family history. People in their 70s have a 5 percent chance of being diagnosed. That’s more than twice that of people in their 60s. Family history raises this by 30 percent, from 5 percent to 6.5 percent. Again, the absolute change is relatively small.

When a relative is diagnosed with dementia later in life, family members often wonder if they should be tested for the “Alzheimer’s gene.” The short answer is no, because the test won’t tell you whether you will develop the disease. It

It’s starting to take over my life. – Hypochondriac In The South Dear Hypochondriac: It’s a wise person who seeks help for a problem that’s ruining the quality of his or her life. You definitely should discuss your fear of dying with a licensed mental health professional. To do that isn’t “weak” – it’s the opposite.

Dear Abby: My son is getting married in the fall, and we’re all looking forward to the celebration. There’s just one problem. My daughter will be in the wedding, and the bridesmaids’ dresses are strapless. She will look beautiful in the dress, but she adopted a “hippy lifestyle” a year ago and stopped shaving her armpits.

The bride-to-be asked me how to approach her to request she remove her armpit hair on the day of the wedding. Is there a tactful way to approach this without offending my daughter and possibly causing bad feelings between her and the bride? – Unsure In New Jersey Dear Unsure: I would discourage you from doing that. Although every bride wants her wedding to be “perfect,” there’s a point at which she must realize there are some things she can’t control. An example of where that boundary should be drawn would be at her bridesmaids’ armpits. During a formal wedding ceremony, bridesmaids usually keep their arms down, so unless your daughter’s “pit hair” is so long she can braid it, it should not distract attention from the bride.

Dear Abby: My parents built a two-bedroom apartment onto their house for my brother and his wife when they were struggling financially.

They decided to move out of state, so my single sister is now in the apartment.

It has been a year, and my brother and his wife now are expecting. They have moved back to the area because they want to raise the baby near family, and want the apartment back. Of course, my sister doesn’t want to give it back.

I agree with my sister that my brother gave it up. But my brother feels my single sister doesn’t need a two-bedroom apartment. On that point I agree with him.
