“I like the scale that it provides,” library board President Carl F. Gilmore said, noting that the context was valuable because the building looked larger in drawings. “That really helps me, and I think it’ll help others.”

PLAINFIELD – Plainfield Public Library trustees on Wednesday night got their first look at a 3D architectural model of the proposed reconstructed library that would be built if voters say “yes” to two referendum questions on the March 15 ballot.

Trustees also discussed the informational campaign for the referendum and went over rules on what they can or can’t do in support or against the ballot initiative.

Informational campaign

Milavec announced to the board that the library has sent out the first of three special edition newsletters as part of the informational campaign to the public.

“The first edition was kind of an overview,” Milavec said. The second edition will be a FAQ focusing on the most common questions.

Videos are also accompanying the informational campaign.

The second set of special edition media will be released to the public Feb. 6, just as early voting begins, Milavec said.

Gilmore also reminded trustees of the rules regarding participating in any cam-

paigning for the new library.

Trustees are allowed only to inform and educate constituents about library plans and the referendum without expressing support or disapproval.

But trustees are also citizens, Gilmore said, and are allowed to participate in campaigning activities as long as they clearly identify themselves as citizens at that point, and not as board members.

Gilmore mentioned library Trustee Vicki Knight’s appearance at a campaign event in support of the referendum last week as a good example of a trustee exercising her rights as a citizen.

The campaign event was organized by the local political action committee called Citizens for a 21st Century Library.

Fairmont School D-89 attorneys resign as of Monday

Superintendent Sonya Whitaker said Tuesday that the Orland Park-based Canna and Canna law firm resigned as attorneys for the school board as of Monday.

She said the law firm did not say why they chose to resign.

A call to Canna and Canna attorneys was not returned before Wednesday’s board meeting.

Board President Katie Ulmer said she wanted to dispel rumors that she was responsible for the resignation of Canna and Canna.

“I want the record to show that I am not responsible. I have not had any contact with them since Dec. 30, 2015, by phone, email or fax or any other method,” she said.

She said there have been seven attempts to sabotage her ability to be president.

She said the reason for considering a new law firm was “conflict of interest.” Ulmer had another set of attorneys present at the meeting not for hire but to represent the interests of the district if needed.

Dotson said the board received two letters that something is wrong but did not get into specifics.

“No one wants to step forward and say what’s going on. We received two letters against someone. There has to be a problem,” Dotson said Board Vice President Joseph Ryan asked Whitaker if she could fire Munch on Thursday morning. After she said yes, Ryan told her to do it because she’s an at-will employee and incompetent. “[Whitaker’s] got all kinds of evidence of her incompetence,” Ryan said.

Board member Joseph Dalpiaz took down the vote for the motion to table the item, which he said failed, as well as the motion to dismiss Munch in a 2-3 vote.

Will County’s chief judge gives State of the Courthouse address

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Will County lawyers and judges on Wednesday took their annual lunch away from the courthouse to learn what’s going on at the courthouse.

Chief Judge Richard Schoenstedt presented his State of the Courthouse address to the Will County Bar Association at the Jacob Henry Mansion.

“There are some things [Bar members] are hearing about for the first time,” said Judge Cory Lund, who serves as Bar Association president.

The current courthouse is on track to become the old courthouse as there are plans for a new building to be constructed across Chicago Street where the former First Midwest Bank and parking lot are now. When the Will County sheriff’s facility on Laraway Road is completed in 2017, the sheriff’s department offices in the bank building will be transferred there.

“That allows for the bank to be demolished so work on the judicial facility can start in late 2017, with a completion date in late 2019 or early 2020,” Schoenstedt said. “I suspect it will take all of the next 18 months or so to finish the design, architecture and engineering.”

Before that, electronic filing of court documents will become mandatory. All attorneys are now required to have an email address that can accept notifications about their cases, Schoenstedt said. The chief judge also thanked the Bar Association’s Family Committee for identifying more than 40 inconsistencies between the newly effective Illinois Marriage and Dissolution of Marriage Act and local court rules, which are being changed.

Whether represented by a lawyer or not, the public now has access to almost 90 filing forms from the fourth-floor library. There also are 10 computer stations that can be used by anyone wishing to look up information on several legal programs. Mayor optimistic on economic position

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Plainfield Mayor Michael Collins touted the village’s strong economic and cultural positions to attendees of the Plainfield Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual State of the Village address Wednesday afternoon.

In addition to mentioning the village’s progress on development and relieving Plainfield’s railway issues, Collins discussed further plans for 2016 during the event at Whitetail Ridge Golf Club in Yorkville.

“The future of the village looks very promising for ’16,” Collins said.

Collins said many facets of the village have achieved success and awards that have decreased insurance costs and made Plainfield a better place to live and work.

Financially, Collins noted that the village has just about maintained its tax rate for seven years, and the village’s water loss rate is reduced to a record low of 2 percent.

Collins also mentioned progress with Canadian National, telling how the railway

owner moved the hotbox detector to decrease the troublesome train stoppages at grade crossings.

But Collins said CN still needs to complete its share of work at the delayed 135th Street crossing project, which the village has been told could be completed by May. “I’m a little critical [of CN] every once in a while,” Collins said. “But I’ve got to admit, they stepped up to the plate and helped us out.”

Collins said the village is continuing to recover from the recession of 2008 and 2009.

“Plainfield continues to witness the recovery in the housing market,” he said, adding that development and plans are continuing in several newer neighborhoods.

The village has also resurfaced more than 14 miles of roads and removed 1,700 parkway ash trees last year because of the emerald ash borer beetle infestation, planting almost 900 replacement trees.

Development in the downtown and medical district areas of the village have also been a positive note of 2015, Collins said.

Collins talked about one of the most anticipated, yet dreaded, projects of 2016: Route 30

construction between Renwick Road and Interstate 55.

It will be a “heart-breaker” for residents in surrounding neighborhoods as motorists try to cut through, Collins said. But he was optimistic about the project, which is ahead of schedule and deemed necessary for improving the blighted economic corridor.

L-Way D-210 attorneys plan to file motion to dismiss lawsuit

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Attorneys with Lincoln-Way School District 210 plan to file a motion Friday to dismiss a lawsuit from a local watchdog group that is suing the district to prevent a school from closing.

A hearing has been scheduled for Feb. 29 on a motion from district attorneys to dismiss the lawsuit from Lincoln-Way Area Taxpayers Unite, a resident group that alleges the Board of Education decision in August to shut

down North high school – or any school – was arbitrary, capricious and unreasonable.

The lawsuit, filed Dec. 29 in Will County, claims the school closure decision lacked a factual and rational basis and board member Christopher Kosel was unqualified to vote, as he didn’t complete mandatory professional development leadership training on time.

The Lincoln-Way board decided in a 5-2 vote to close North to combat multimillion-dollar deficits in the district’s budget.

ty Judge John Anderson considered a motion filed by LWATU’s attorney, Stephen Eberhardt, to set a hearing on a preliminary court order to prevent North high school from closing.

In the motion, filed Jan. 13, Eberhardt argued Lincoln-Way has already begun the process of closing the school and “time is of the essence.”

His motion stated the defendants in the lawsuit – the Board of Education – would not be harmed by a speedy resolution but the plaintiffs would be if there were delays.

William Gleason and John Izzo, the district’s attorneys, told the judge they planned on Friday to file a motion to dismiss the lawsuit. Gleason said he was not authorized to comment on the case.

Anderson said he was considering recusing himself from the case since he is a Lincoln-Way alumni and his family lives in the area. He said another judge may oversee the case.

“My kids play baseball in the Lincoln-Way area,” he said.

Liz Sands, LWATU founder and one of the plaintiffs in the

case, was with more than 20 other supporters of the group Wednesday at the Will County Court Annex building.

“I look forward to hearing what their information is in the motion to dismiss,” she said.

Since the lawsuit was filed, former board member Christopher McFadden resigned Jan. 14.

Eberhardt said McFadden would still be a defendant in the case. District officials have said the board will need to seat another member within 45 days, in compliance with state law.

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The city of Joliet will do a study to determine whether a noise wall can be built along a section of Interstate 55 that runs in front of the Wooded Creek subdivision.

City Council approval of the study Tuesday resurrects previous efforts to build a wall to mute highway noise for a section of I-55 south of Black Road.

Public Works Director James Trizna told the council that the previous effort was abandoned when Joliet was unable to reach an agreement with Shorewood on a wall running along the east side of I-55 and as far south as Route 52.

The wall would have crossed borders and possibly blocked highway exposure for Shorewood businesses along I-55.

The $180,000 study will be funded by the Illinois Department of Transportation. It will determine whether the wall would mitigate noise and where it should be built.

Trizna said a future wall, if built, would be designed in such a way as to not block highway exposure for Conrad’s Harley-Davidson, the business closest to Wooded Creek.

The Wooded Creek homeowners’ association also would have to take responsibility for maintaining the wall, Trizna said. Construction of the wall would be funded by the state.

U.S. Supreme Court takes case accusing Joliet police of malicious prosecution

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to consider the case of a man who wants to sue the city of Joliet and several police officers for what he alleges was malicious prosecution after he contends he was wrongly arrested on charges that were later dismissed.

Elijah Manuel’s attempt to file a federal lawsuit against Joliet was denied after the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit in Chicago ruled that the case could not be heard in federal court. Manuel had missed a two-year statute of limitations to file in state court.

Manuel, a Joliet resident now serving prison time on separate charges, contends that Joliet police falsified a drug test and wrongfully arrested him in March 2011 on a possession of controlled substance charge.

He also says he was arraigned even after a lab report showed the pills were not Ec-

stasy, as police claimed, but were vitamins; and that he was kept in jail for another month before the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office sought dismissal of the charges.

Manuel, who is black, also made several civil-rights claims, including that he was subject to excessive force, unreasonable search and seizure, and unreasonable detention, according to court documents.

The Supreme Court in taking the case noted that the 7th Circuit does not allow malicious prosecution claims to be filed in federal court. The case could be argued in either April or October.

Manuel’s attorney, Stanley Eisenhammer, said Wednesday that his client “had the misfortune of being arrested in Joliet where the 7th Circuit has jurisdiction. If he had been arrested in Ohio or Texas, he would have been able to bring this case to federal court.”

According to the Seventh Circuit decision made Dec. 28, Manuel alleges that on March

18, 2011, “he was a passenger in his car being driven by his brother when they were stopped for failing to signal.

“A police officer detected an odor of burnt cannabis from inside the car. Without warning, the officer flung open the passenger’s door and dragged Manuel out. The officer pushed Manuel to the ground, handcuffed him, and then punched and kicked him.”

A bottle of pills was then found on Manuel. Police tested the pills on the scene, and Manuel was arrested. Manuel in his complaint said the pills were vitamins.

Joliet City Attorney Marty Shanahan declined to comment on the case since it is pending.

The Illinois Department of Corrections website lists Manuel as serving a 17-year sentence at Pinckneyville Correctional Center on convictions from three different cases for home invasion, armed robbery and aggravated driving under the influence.

Roechner said police found Beck at 2:51 p.m. Tuesday when they stopped a vehicle he was riding in at Western Avenue and Pine Street. Beck was taken into custody on an outstanding Grundy County warrant for driving with a suspended li-

cense.

“He was identified as the suspect in the surveillance videos from both robberies and the clothing he was wearing matched what’s on the video,” Roechner said.

Officers also reportedly found Beck had an air soft pistol in his waistband that resembled a real handgun.

Beck was arrested on two counts of aggravated robbery and booked into the Will County Jail. According to jail records, Beck has previously been arrested in Will County on charges of drug possession and driving with a suspended license.

School enrollment issues lead to Plainfield commission tabling housing development

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – A plan to convert a previously unfinished senior living community into single-family housing was tabled by the Plainfield Plan Commission until Feb. 2 over concerns about how the development would affect school enrollment and park districts.

New Lenox-based Hartz Construction Co. on Monday presented the commission with the plan to convert the 407-unit Playa Vista project, consisting of 221 single-family detached ranch-style homes and 186 townhome units, into a 321-unit development with 308 single-family, two-story homes.

But Commissioner Andrew Heinen, who lives in the neighboring Grande Park subdivision, said residents of the existing subdivision were concerned that the switch from senior to single-family housing could flood Oswego School District 308 with more students.

Heinen, who noted he sends his children to private school, said the development could

force students who live across the street from Grande Park Elementary School to bus to a different school because of an influx in new students that could affect what schools students attend. A similar issue occurred three years ago.

Although Hartz spokesman Mike Martin said developers have already sat down with school district officials, commissioners wanted to hear the school district and Oswegoland Park District’s thoughts on the project firsthand, either through a letter or in person, before making a decision.

“We want to make sure the [Plainfield] trustees are also looking into this,” Heinen said, noting that Grande Park residents would have been at the commission meeting Tuesday if they weren’t at a school district meeting at the same time.

Commissioners tabled the planned development change, on Martin’s suggestion, to allow those residents a voice.

But some commissioners cautioned against turning the next commission meeting into an argument about school impact.

“I think their points are

well-taken,” Commissioner Richard Kiefer said. “But they should be addressing their energies to the school district about that.”

Chairman James Sobkoviak said the village doesn’t have control of the change in demographics or school redistricting.

“It’s unfortunate that children are put through moves, but that’s how life goes and we can’t tie the project down to that,” Sobkoviak said.

Project plans

The change in the Playa Vista project would integrate some existing ranch homes and one six-unit townhome building into the planned single-family homes.

Martin explained that the townhome building, which currently has one occupant, would have its own homeowners association that would itself be a member of the whole development’s homeowners association.

Martin said Hartz will comply with all village codes and ordinances, only extending a previously approved variance to limit side yards to 8 feet on the ranch homes.

Village Administrator Brian Murphy said the number may make the village appear anemic, especially with Plainfield issuing about 1,400 new home permits in the year before the recession, but it’s not.

“Even at 138 homes, we are the ninth highest performing community in Illinois [by permit count],” Murphy said, noting that the village ranks as the 45th largest municipality in the state.

One of the issues that keeps the new home permit number from being larger is that finding lots in the village is a challenge, Murphy said, with

Spring Bank and Playa Vista as the only developments with plenty of available space.

One project that may help increase home developer interest to the west is a gas station project on the corner of Drauden Road and 126th Street. Murphy said the project is unique because it is investing $1.4 million to bring water and sewer lines to the area.

“The large reason why that area hasn’t taken off is because it lacks those facilities,” Murphy said, clarifying that the gas station project and its utilities could spark future development.

“I’m enjoying being able to drive and carrying a laundry basket down the stairs,” MacIntyre said. “ I want to keep doing those things. You’ll never know how much you miss walking until you can walk again.”

JOLIET – The clock may be ticking on Joliet Township Supervisor Dan Vera’s pending plans for Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park.

The Joliet City Council in September gave Vera authority to have contractors inspect the city-owned park, part of the due diligence he wanted to do before making a proposal to put control of the park in the hands of the township.

Vera said the township would be able to fund the kind of events that used to be held at the park in past years but have gone away since the city cut funding.

But Vera has yet to come back with a proposal, and two council members said they want to hear a proposal from him by the Feb. 2 council meeting.

“Then, we could maybe have a vote on it in February, because it’s just taking too long,” Councilman Michael Turk said Wednesday.

It’s not clear what would happen if Vera does not have a proposal by then. But Vera’s interest in Bicentennial Park has raised concerns among some

residents opposed to the possibility of township ownership.

The co-president of the St. John’s Neighborhood Association spoke Tuesday to the council, reiterating the group’s opposition and noting that it has collected more than 400 signatures opposed to township control of the park located in their neighborhood.

“We want to give a reminder that we disagree with anyone other than the city owning Bicentennial Park,” Candace Johnson told the council.

Opposition to a change in control is linked to the park’s historic location on what was the first commercial district in Joliet. Opponents also have said they are concerned with what the township might do with the park.

Vera could not be immediately reached Wednesday afternoon for comment.

Turk suggested the city set a deadline for a township proposal after Johnson’s comments.

“I think we’ll have to give the public and employees some closure,” Turk said, noting that park employees are trying to make plans for the year. “They want to know what’s going on, and I think we owe them an answer.”

Lawyers for Drew Peterson appeal his murder conviction The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – Lawyers for Drew Peterson have asked the Illinois Supreme Court to toss out his conviction for the murder of his third wife.

An Illinois appellate court in November affirmed the former Bolingbrook police officer’s murder conviction and sentence in the 2004 death of Kathleen Savio, whose body was found in her suburban Chicago home’s bathtub. The court upheld Peterson’s 38-year

sentence, meaning he won’t be paroled until 2047.

In their appeal filed Tuesday, Peterson’s lawyers argue he was denied a fair trial because of the use of so-called hearsay statements, as well as other alleged critical errors, during court proceedings in Will County.

Peterson is scheduled to stand trial on charges he solicited an inmate to kill Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow, who prosecuted the Savio case.

For those wanting lighter fare, TreeHouse does healthier salads with spring greens, spinach, kale or romaine, vegetables nuts and berries.

When there’s a concert going on in Tree of Joliet TreeHouse serves as a concession stand with soft pretzels, individual pizzas and corn dogs.

Hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Monday through Friday and 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday evenings when Coffee, Chords and Canvas takes place. Kuypers teaches the painting class, which includes live local acoustic music, all supplies and one drink for $35.

Jesse James Johnson III, age 44, son of Jesse Johnson Jr. and Bettye Gavin, was born July 29, 1971, in DeLand, Florida. He moved to Joliet and accepted Christ at an early age. A 1989 Joliet West High School graduate. He attended Joliet Junior College for a brief time and became an entrepreneur. Jesse departed this life on Jan. 9, 2016.

Mary Donnette Jordan-Dundrea, (nee Butzback), age 82, passed away peacefully Jan. 16, 2016, at her home in Duroc Bay, Missouri.

Born Aug. 28, 1933, in Jacksonville, IL, to Jess and Edna (nee Roper) Butzback.

Surviving are her husband, Francis W. Dundrea Jr.; children, Melissa (David) Bush, Kathryn (Doug) McFarland, Mary Dawn (Scott) Bellamy, Kenneth (Vicki) Jordan and Sean (Paula) Jordan, all of whom were her favorite.

Also surviving are grandchildren, Brian (Erin), Ethan and Mary Bush, Caitlyn (Will) Hair, Kristin (Jacob) Buffington, Lindsay (Nick) Schenk, and Jordan McFarland, Jess, Maggie, Alex and Olivia Hogan, Kenneth and Matthew Jordan and Madison and Allison Jordan. Also surviving is her brother, Charles (Karen) Butzback of Ohio; as well as numerous great-grandchildren, stepchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded by her husband, Kenneth O. Mary graduated with honors from the University of Illinois in 1954.

She received her degree in secretarial training. She retired from GAF Corporation after over 30 years of employment. She was a member of Warsaw Christian Church. She had also been a member of Busy Bees and a first responder with the Deer Creek Fire Protection District. She enjoyed reading, her family, and especially 4th of July holidays with her entire family at the lake.

Funeral services for Mary Donnette Jordan-Dundrea will be held Saturday, Jan. 23, 2016, at 11 a.m. at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black at Essington Roads in Joliet, Illinois. Rev. Scott Zon will officiate.

She was an avid Chicago Bears and Blackhawks fan. Virginia enjoyed reading, crocheting and sweets. She was a very social person who cherished the company of her family and friends. Her energy, compassion and kindness are the qualities that made her such a special person.

Bruce Rauner, top Illinois Republicans called Wednesday for a state takeover of the financially troubled Chicago Public Schools, which faces a nearly $1 billion budget deficit that could lead to thousands of teacher layoffs and a possible strike in a matter of months.

Senate GOP Leader Christine Radogno called the plan a “lifeline” for CPS and Rauner said it’s a way to protect children and taxpayers, though Democrats quickly shot down the idea.

Radogno and House Republican Leader Jim Durkin said the legislation would give the Illinois State Board of Education control over the nation’s third-largest school district. They also noted that GOP lawmakers may reveal a bankruptcy plan for CPS and the city of Chicago in the coming weeks, but didn’t offer many details.

“What we’re proposing is a lifeline,” Radogno said of CPS, which has a massive unfunded pension liability.

“We didn’t come to this lightly, but the track record of Chicago and its public school system is abysmal.”

The plan calls for the state schools superintendent, who is chosen by a governor-appointed board, to name up to seven members of an independent authority that would essentially replace Chicago’s school board, which is chosen by the mayor. They would also negotiate teacher contracts, though Republicans said the authority wouldn’t be able to “unilaterally cancel or modify” existing agreements.

At least seven districts in Illinois have come under state management since 2003, including East St. Louis in 2012, which was fought hard by people in the struggling St. Louis suburb.

But Democrats – who hold big majorities in both chambers of the Illinois Legislature, are close allies of Emanuel and are locked with Rauner on a long-overdue state budget – blasted the plan almost immediately.

“This is not going to happen,” Senate President John Cullerton said, calling the idea and a distraction from the state’s other problems.

The mayor was at a conference in Washington, D.C., but his spokeswoman said Emanuel is “100 percent opposed to Gov. Rauner’s ‘plan’ ” and accused Republicans of “trying desperately to distract from their own failures.”

“If the governor was serious about helping Chica-

go students, he should start by proposing – and passing – a budget that fully funds education and treats CPS students like every other child in the state,” Emanuel spokeswoman Kelley Quinn said.

For years, Emanuel has called for a change in state law regarding how pensions are funded. Currently, Chicago taxpayers cover the cost of city teachers’ pensions, while taxpayers statewide contribute to retirement funds for teachers outside Chicago – a system Emanuel argues is unfair because Chicago residents pay twice.

But Rauner has repeatedly said he won’t approve any help for Chicago until Emanuel gets behind legislative measures that the former businessman says will make Illinois more competitive. Those include allowing local governments to curb labor unions’ bargaining rights and making changes to workers’ compensation insurance. Emanuel has opposed those efforts, saying they would hurt the middle class.

Rauner noted the Demo-

crat-led Legislature passed a measure in 2014 that allowed Illinois to take over districts other than CPS, and called their opposition to the latest plan unfair.

Emanuel already has dealt with stern criticism over allegations that his administration kept a video of a white officer shooting a black teenager under wraps until after he won a second term; protesters have repeatedly called him to step down.

CPS also is in the midst of contentious negotiations with the Chicago Teachers Union on a new contract.

Union members last month overwhelmingly authorized their leaders to call a strike if needed, which was an attempt to pressure the district to avoid layoffs or severe cuts. The union, which went on strike in 2012, says a walkout would still be months away.

CTU officials called the plan an example where Rauner “clumsily attempts to lead” and that the plan is a “non-starter when state government has so far been unable to assume responsibility for its own budget.”

Mary Jane Shepherd (Nee Smith), age 89, late of Lockport, passed away peacefully Friday, Jan. 15, 2016, at the home of her granddaughter, Michelle, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Kankakee County, lifelong Lockport resident, recently living with her daughter in Lago Vista the past seven years.

She was an avid Chicago Cubs fan, gardener, loved cooking, baking but most of all cherished spending time with her loving family especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by her husband, Darrell “Sparky” Shepherd (2008); parents, Michael and Esther (Anderson) Smith; six brothers, three sisters; and a son-in-law, James Jurmann.

Survived by her four devoted children, Tom (Terri) Shepherd, Wayne (Kathy) Shepherd, Janet (Nick Kozak, fiance) Jurmann and Darrell (Kathy)Shepherd; stepdaughter, Lynette Miller; five loving grandchildren, Tom (Melissa) Shepherd, Michelle Condra-Shepherd, John (Jenny) Jurmann, Jim Jurmann and Christina (Steve) Hupke; three great-grandchildren, Jordan Shepherd and Haley and Hannah Hupke. Obama tours auto show, vows help for water crisis in Flint

By KEVIN FREKING The Associated Press DETROIT – President Barack Obama on Wednesday hailed the revival of the nation’s auto industry while acknowledging the water crisis in nearby Flint, Michigan, saying the detection of high levels of lead serve as a reminder that the government can’t shortchange basic services.

Speaking to auto workers after taking in the North American International Auto Show, Obama said, “I know that if I was a parent up there, I would be beside myself that my kid’s health could be at risk.” He met with Flint’s mayor the day before and promised federal help.

“What is inexplicable and inexcusable is once people figured out there was a problem and that there was lead in the water, the notion that immediately families weren’t notified, things weren’t shut down – that shouldn’t happen anywhere,” Obama told CBS News in an interview scheduled for broadcast on

Sunday.

“It’s also an indication of sometimes we downplay the role that an effective government has to play in protecting public health and safety of people and clearly the system here broke down,” he said. CBS released a clip of the interview on Wednesday.

Obama sought to highlight how his administration extended the auto industry a financial lifeline during the heart of the Great Recession even as many others called for the government to focus its resources elsewhere. He said the outcome of his administration’s bet is evident through a much-improved economy. Consumers bought nearly 17.5 million vehicles last year, a record.

“What’s true of Detroit is true of the country,” he said.

“I want people to remember how far we’ve come.”

Obama spoke at the UAW-GM Center for Human Resources, the national headquarters of the joint relationship between the United Auto Workers and General Motors. His visit took

place as longstanding problems with Flint’s drinking water have begun to capture the nation’s attention.

Rick Snyder asked Obama on Wednesday to reconsider his denial of a federal disaster declaration to address the crisis, saying its severity poses an “imminent and long-term threat” to residents. Obama declared an emergency – qualifying the city for $5 million – but determined that it is not a disaster based on the legal requirement that such additional relief is intended for natural events, fires, floods or explosions.

White House spokesman Eric Schultz said “primary responsibility” rests with state and local officials but that Obama would do what he can to help.

In his appeal letter, Snyder called it a “narrow reading” and likened the crisis to a flood, “given that qualities within the water, over a long term, flood and damaged the city’s infrastructure in ways that were not immediately or easily detectable.”

The National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration and NASA announced Wednesday that 2015 was by far the hottest year in 136 years of record keeping.

For the most part, scientists at the agencies and elsewhere blamed man-made global warming, with a boost from El Nino.

NOAA said 2015’s temperature was 58.62 degrees Fahrenheit (14.79 degrees Celsius), passing 2014 by a record margin of 0.29 degrees. That’s 1.62

degrees above the 20th century average. NASA, which measures differently, said 2015 was 0.23 degrees warmer than the record set in 2014 and 1.6 degrees above 20th century average.

Because of the wide margin over 2014, NASA calculated that 2015 was a record with 94 percent certainty, more than double the certainty it had last year when announcing 2014 as a record. NOAA put the number at above 99 percent – or “virtually certain,” said Tom Karl, director of NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information.

But 1.5 or 2 degrees are not “magic numbers,” and “we’re already seeing the impacts of global warming,” said NASA Goddard Institute of Space Studies director Gavin Schmidt.

“This trend will continue; it will continue because we understand why it’s happening,” Schmidt said. “It’s happening because the dominant force is carbon dioxide” from burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas.

Although 2015 is now the hottest on record, it was the fourth time in 11 years that Earth broke annual marks for high temperature.

“It’s getting to the point where breaking a record is the norm,” Texas Tech climate sci-

entist Katharine Hayhoe said.

“It’s almost unusual when we’re not breaking a record.”

December 2015 was the 10th month last year that set a monthly warmth record, with only January and April not hitting high marks.

“That’s the first time we’ve seen that,” NOAA’s Karl said.

In December, the globe was 2 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than normal, beating the old record set in 2014 by more than a half a degree, NOAA calculated.

Earth has broken monthly heat records 34 times since 2000. The last time a global cold month record was set was December 1916 and the coldest year on record was 1911, according to NOAA.

In Congress, Rep. Sean Duffy, a white Republican from rural Wisconsin, lambasted black members of Congress for failing to de- U.S. Rep. cry these high Sean Duffy abortion numbers. The next day, Rep. Gwen Moore, a black Democrat from Milwaukee, fired back – accusing Duffy and his GOP colleagues of caring about black children only before they are born.

In Missouri, a white GOP state legislator, Rep. Mike Moon, introduced a “personhood” bill that would effectively outlaw all abortions, and titled it the All Lives Matter Act. Abortion-rights activists were indignant, saying Moon was provocatively co-opting the Black Lives Matter slogan that has been used to convey

concern about the deaths of unarmed blacks in encounters with police.

The disputes have drawn attention to abortion’s racial demographics just ahead of Friday’s annual March for Life in Washington, D.C., a gathering of anti-abortion activists to mark the anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s 1973 Roe v. Wade decision establishing a nationwide right to abortion.

The statistics themselves are not in dispute.

U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore W h i l e b l a c k s comprise 13 percent of the population, black women account for more than 30 percent of the estimated 1 million abortions performed annually in the U.S. Over the years, some anti-abortion activists have attributed this phenomenon to black communities being “targeted” by abortion providers with the aim of curtailing the black population.

Abortion-rights supporters reject this assertion, and say the high black abortion rate reflects the impact of poverty and lack of access to effective contraception.

Duffy tapped into this debate in his remarks on the House floor earlier this month.

“My friends, liberals, Congressional Black Caucus members, they talk about fighting for the defenseless and the hopeless and the downtrodden, but there is no one more hopeless and voiceless than an unborn baby,” Duffy said.

“But their silence is deafening.

I can’t hear them.”

“Black lives matter ... and Indian and Asian, Hispanic and white,” Duffy continued.

“All those lives matter. We should fight for all life, including the life of the unborn.”

The Congressional Black Caucus said Duffy’s remarks were offensive, and Moore took to the House floor to accuse Duffy of hypocrisy given his lack of support for some social programs that could aid children and mothers in low-income families.

“A number of African-American women face multiple barriers to accessing quality, affordable health care, which can lead to higher rates of both unintended pregnancy and abortion,” Moore said.

“It’s painfully obvious that Rep. Duffy’s concern for life ends as soon as the umbilical cord is cut.”

Stand up for women – and their children Do you ever daydream about Hillary Clinton?

My friend and colleague, Ramesh Ponnuru, did once. It’s how he opened the first chapter of his book, “The Party of Death,” some years ago.

Ponnuru goes on to do some excellent speechwriting for Sen. Clinton in his dream. He has her talking about domestic violence, rape awareness, the so-called glass ceiling, and child care.

Ponnuru’s dream Hillary continues: “No woman should ever find herself in jail because an unplanned pregnancy has left her desperate. We don’t make criminals out of pregnant women in America. The Supreme Court guarantees that. If ideologues in the other party tries to change that, we will fight them every step of the way.”

For the record, I am so with you, Hillary of Ponnuru’s dreams.

And then, dream Hillary says: “But that doesn’t mean we’re for abortion. ... Abortion is a tragic choice. We want to liberate women.

Abortion is a sign that our society is pitting them against their children.”

Now the audience isn’t entirely sure what to do.

It was a little like what House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said in an interview with Roll Call editor Melinda Henneberger the other day.

The former House speaker – the first woman in the job – didn’t really “give” much to the pro-life movement. She said that she is not for “abortion on demand.” But she also made clear that she opposes most prolife efforts to restrict abortion.

So she pretty much remained the stalwart she has been known as on the issue. And yet, NARAL ProChoice America, a leading abortion advocacy group, reprimanded her.

What a beautiful thing it would be if Pelosi pushed back against NARAL. To have a little dream of my own: She would insist the Democratic Party should not be for abortion on demand, and should work with all people of good will to find alternatives for women who need help.

She would go on to say something of the sort that Ponnuru had Hillary

Pelosi went on a little rant during the Roll Call interview about GOP men and contraception. The narrative that Republicans, conservatives, Catholics, Mitt Romney, etc., are waging a war on women – one that includes wanting to take away access to contraception – is another fallacy.

We can discuss what harm the sexual revolution has done to women, men and families, medical research and the environment. But that’s different from claiming that some basic measures to take taxpayer funding out of an ugly business or to protect religious liberty of those who want nothing to do with insurance coverage of abortion and contraception and sterilization, is something other than what it is: protecting basic freedoms.

In the Ponnuru Hillary dream cycle, Clinton ends with: “America deserves better than abortion, and America deserves better than this fight we’ve been having for over a generation. And I’m willing to work with anyone, in either party, who wants to move past that fight.”

On Friday, people will descend on Washington, D.C., for the 43rd time to protest Roe v. Wade, under the theme “Pro-Life and Pro-Women Go Hand in Hand.” To paraphrase Ponnuru: We deserve better than the miserable politics of abortion in America.

EPA passive on Flint water Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder’s administration faces a growing problem with the contaminated water in Flint.

The response from Lansing has been too little, too late. And even though officials at the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality have stepped down, and investigations are ongoing, Snyder and the state ultimately will be held accountable for any long-term damage to residents.

But the federal Environmental Protection Agency failed the public, too, failing to sound a public alarm when alerted to warning signs spelled out to agency workers almost a year ago.

With a clear mission to protect human health and the environment, the EPA must be held to the same standard of accountability as state agencies.

In fact, local, state and federal government agencies ignored concerns about Flint’s water until the evidence was so overwhelming they had no choice but to act. Instead, private entities – a Flint pediatrician and a private researcher outside the state – closely monitored the water quality and were credited for bringing the issue to light.

The EPA has no qualms about getting involved in even the smallest details of the nation’s water sources. It would seem possible contamination of the water source in a relatively large U.S. city would be a top priority of the health-conscious agency.

A memo from Miguel Del Toral, an EPA regulations manager at Region 5’s Drinking Water Branch, indicates the agency realized that as of April last year, Flint no longer was using corrosion control treatment for lead and copper. He told his supervisor, Susan Hedman, it was a “major concern from a public health standpoint” and a clear problem for drinking water.

“Recent drinking water sample results indicate the presence of high lead results in the drinking water,” the email reads.

One week later, Hedman didn’t seem to think the lack of corrosion controls was a problem, according to her emails with then-Flint Mayor Dayne Walling. “The preliminary draft report should not have been released outside the agency,” she wrote.

“When the report has been revised and fully vetted by EPA management, the findings and recommendations will be shared with the city and [Michigan’s Department of Environmental Quality], and DEQ will be responsible for following up with the city.”

The revised report was eventually released – four months later.

At a minimum, the EPA’s failed response illustrates a flaw in the system on its end, and it reveals just how ineffective government regulations can be without adequate monitoring.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

The Cougars and Tigers both brought 5-0 Southwest Prairie Conference records into the meet, assuring the winner of at least a share of the title. For South, the payoff would be a three-peat; for North, a victory would guar-

antee its first SPC championship.

But with South’s five starting seniors all providing wins on their senior night, North will have to make history another time. The Cougars recorded seven falls out of their 10 victories to capture a 54-20 triumph over the Tigers.

“Our five seniors have done a great job of leading us,” South coach Jason Acevedo said. “We won a share of the conference title, so this is now three years in a row.

This is unbelievable considering where we were five or

six years ago. It just shows how the kids have bought into working in the offseason and the family atmosphere that we created. We preach how bonus points are the way to go, and our kids all stepped up and responded.”

South, which completes its SPC slate at Oswego East next Thursday, opened with three straight wins from seniors.

After Danny Saracco received a forfeit in the opener at 195 pounds, returning state finalist Eric Johnson recorded a fall at 220, then Ethan Stachniak got a late takedown and

near fall in a 6-1 win over Leo Santos at 285.

“After missing last year, I’m just thankful to be able to come back to this program,” Stachniak said. “Picking up where we left off from last year is really great. I have to thank the coaching staff for leading us in this direction for the past three seasons. I love all of these guys, they’re like brothers to me. And the senior class, I’ve been with them through thick and thin, and these guys are my best friends. We’re all just a big family.”

The Tigers got their first

win from Marcus Povlick at 106 when he captured a 16-5 victory over Enzo Silva. After Andrew Cervantes got a fall at 113 to give South a 20-4 lead, North’s Tyler Myers and South’s Jake Kendall traded pins.

Although Saracco didn’t get the opportunity to compete in his final home meet, that in no

way diminished his excitement over what the Cougars have accomplished.

“It feels amazing,” Saracco said. “We’ve turned this whole

wrestling program around in the last three years. Just being a part of this is something special, so I’m going to enjoy this.

Even though we lost seven or

eight seniors from last year, we still had the mindset that we were going to get another conference title, and we did. Our seniors know what we need to do, but the younger guys have impressed me since they’re working and getting better.”

Although his squad came up short in their first SPC title showdown, coach Jeff Kastel is proud his Tigers have put themselves in this position so quickly.

“We told our guys afterward that we’d never been in this position before, so that’s something that they need to walk around with their heads up and feel positive about,” Kastel said. “This is a three-peat for South, while we won five SPC duals this year and haven’t won five duals often in a season and this year we’re 13-6 overall.

We’re extremely happy about that, but we’re not satisfied.

Our guys are going to get hungry and motivated.”

Lincoln-Way Central came in 12-3 and was No. 2 last week, while JCA was No. 3.

Joliet West, which had been No. 1, lost five of six games before beating Oswego on Monday in the MLK Day of Hoops at Joliet Central. The Tigers came up on the wrong side of the ledger too often recently to maintain their hold on the top spot.

That’s right, JCA is our new No. 1. Anyone who has followed local basketball the past 35 or so years – since the Terry Gannon era – may have a difficult time believing what is happening.

But it indeed is real. The Hilltoppers have played very well defensively most of the season, and Lincoln-Way

Central coach Bob Curran said they are one of the best offensive teams his squad has faced.

So, as we steam toward a big Friday night of local basketball, here are the rankings of the top 10 large-school teams in the area.

1. Joliet Catholic (14-2): The Hilltoppers are 12 games over .500 and winners of nine straight. Friday’s game against Marian Catholic should pack the gym. How about Jalen Jackson when he starts feeling it?

2. Lincoln-Way Central (124): The Knights might have

learned something at JCA that will make them even more difficult to knock off in the future. They were within 48-46 midway through the fourth quarter before things slipped away.

3. Joliet West (11-6): Per-

haps the Tigers have gone through their bad spell, and their mantra of making each game a one-night championship will help turn things around. Regardless, opponents better be able to break their pressure.

4. Lincoln-Way West (8-5):

When physical point guard Marco Pettinato is healthy – and even when he is not 100 percent – he is one of the most valuable players in the area.

The Warriors have the assets for a big second half of the season.

5. Minooka (14-7): Welcome to the top five, Indians. They went 3-2 in the Galesburg MLK Tournament, with losses of 51-44 to Peoria Central and 46-37 to Galesburg, which is 19-1 and state-ranked. Minooka had Galesburg down, 26-16, with 3-plus minutes left in the third quarter.

The Joliet Catholic Academy boys basketball team had knocked off Lincoln-Way Central, 67-55, a few minutes earlier.

That improved the Hilltoppers to 14-2, a record difficult to ignore. Veteran coach Joe Gura addressed what is transpiring.

“It’s the kids, it’s all the kids,” Gura said. “There’s only so much you can do getting kids in the proper place and running things properly.

You reach a certain point in the season, and it becomes their responsibility.

“In all the great seasons my teams have had through the years, we got ’em to a certain point, and then they took over. They stuck together.

It’s a credit to our kids that is what is going on now here.”

JCA will aim to extend its nine-game winning streak Friday night when Marian Catholic visits. The Spartans are among the top teams in the rugged East Suburban Catholic Conference.

Right now, however, the Hilltoppers are feeling as if they can go toe-to-toe with the big boys.

“We’re playing with a lot of confidence, and that’s the key to winning,” senior center Luke Mander said after dropping 23 points on Lincoln-Way Central.

6. Joliet Central (8-7): The Steelmen drop down a slot after losing to Bloom, 54-51, in the MLK Day of Hoops. It will be an interesting challenge Friday night at Bolingbrook as Central tries to maintain its share of the SouthWest Suburban Conference Blue lead.

7. Plainfield North (11-7): The Tigers beat Bolingbrook in the MLK Day of Hoops and seem to be back on track. The big one in the Southwest Prairie is Friday night when North hosts Minooka.

8. Bolingbrook (6-8): The Raiders have led late in six of their eight losses. Nana Wiafe-Akenten is a nice player, but Bolingbrook needs more consistent production from other spots on the floor to turn its record around.

9. Lemont (11-6): The Indians continue to ride the strong play of junior guard P.J. Pipes. They rallied late but came up short, 66-64, against Rich Central in the MLK Day of Hoops.

10. Lockport (8-7): The Porters played very well in last Thursday’s win at Joliet West and entered Wednesday night’s game against Lincoln-Way North a tick above .500. If they can continue to get production from their post players, they can be a factor the rest of the way.

Anyone else? Plainfield East is 8-10. The Bengals may not be top-10 worthy yet, but they are knocking on the door.

Curry scores 25 as Warriors keep cruising, breeze past Bulls The Associated Press CHICAGO – Stephen Curry scored 25 points, and the Golden State Warriors made it look easy again, beating the Bulls, 125-94, Wednesday night.

Curry tied a season high with 11 assists and grabbed seven rebounds.

Klay Thompson added 20 points. Harrison Barnes scored 19, and the defending champions simply outclassed the Bulls after embarrassing LeBron James and the Cavaliers in Cleveland on Monday night. The Warriors built a big lead in the first quarter and never were threatened after that, improving their leaguebest road record to 20-4.

Derrick Rose scored 29, and Jimmy Butler added 23 points after a slow start for the Bulls.

Pau Gasol was a nonfactor with one point, and the Bulls missed 19 of 20 3-pointers on the way to their fifth loss in seven games.

Two nights after they pounded Cleveland in the arena where they captured the

championship last spring, the Warriors wasted little time seizing control in this one.

Playing in the shadows of a “72” banner commemorating the 1995-96 Bulls’ record-setting season, the Warriors continued their assault on the seemingly unattainable wins mark.

Golden State was trailing by one midway through the first quarter when a cutting Curry converted a three-point play. Rose, who committed the foul, got subbed out after a strong start. And in a flash, the Warriors broke this one open.

They were up, 34-18, going into the second and led by as many as 21 before heading to the locker room with a 63-44 cushion.

Curry had 15 points and seven assists in the half. Barnes scored 11 and the Warriors simply put on a clinic in ball movement that led to 30 points in the paint.

Rose scored 21 for the Bulls, but the rest of the team combined for just 23 points in the half. The numbers barely describe how one-sided this was.

There were comical moments like when the Bulls’ E’Twaun Moore crashed to the floor in the first quarter trying to defend a crossover by Curry, who buried a 19-foot jumper. There was a neat pass from Shaun Livingston to Leandro Barbosa for a reverse layup that made it 41-20 early in the second. There was also a somewhat scary moment when the Bulls’ Aaron Brooks tripped Rose, sending him into Curry as they raced out to defend a 3 from the corner with 4:28 left in the half.

Bulls: Coach Fred Hoiberg said C Joakim Noah is “in great spirits” after having what could be season-ending surgery to repair his dislocated left shoulder on Tuesday.

He said Noah hopes to rejoin the team this weekend.

Warriors: Interim coach Luke Walton said coach Steve Kerr is participating “more and more” now that he is traveling with the team. Kerr has been sidelined since training camp because of complications from offseason back surgery.

Nebraska hangs on to top No. 11 Michigan St.

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Shavon Shields scored 28 points, playing through hip pain, and Denzel Valentine missed a shot just before the buzzer to allow Nebraska to hold on for a 72-71 win over No. 11 Michigan State on Wednesday night.

The Cornhuskers (12-8, 4-3 Big Ten) have won four straight, three on the road.

They also have won three straight against the Spartans.

Michigan State (17-4, 3-4) has lost three straight and suddenly looks nothing like the top-ranked team it was earlier in the season.

The Spartans are struggling in part because Bryn Forbes has lost his shooting touch, especially at home. He was 1 of 8 against Nebraska and scored three points, one home game after going 0 for 5 and scoring just two points in a 17-point loss to Iowa.

Bills hire NFL’s 1st full female assistant coach

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Buffalo Bills promoted Kathryn Smith to be their special teams quality control coach, making her the first full-time female member of an NFL coaching staff.

The team announced the move Wednesday night.

Smith was an administrative assistant this season for Bills assistant coaches under Rex Ryan, with whom she has worked for seven years.

She spent the previous 12 seasons working for the New York Jets in various capacities, including a player personnel assistant from 2007-13. Ryan became Jets coach in 2009.

Smith served as Ryan’s assistant in 2014, his final season in New York before he was fired and then hired by the Bills.

In her new role, Smith will assist special teams coordinator Danny Crossman and his assistant Eric Smith.

“She certainly deserves this promotion based on her knowledge and strong commitment, just to name a couple of her outstanding qualities,” Ryan said.

NASCAR extends playoffs to Xfinity, truck series SUBMITTED REPORT JOLIET – After the overwhelming success of elimination format of the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup playoffs introduced in 2014, NASCAR chairman and CEO Brian France has announced that a similar system will be implemented in both the NASCAR Xfinity Series and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

Chicagoland Speedway will present a dynamic weekend Sept. 15 to 18 as it kicks off the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup for the sixth consecutive season. New in 2016, NASCAR Xfinity Series and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series drivers will participate in their last-chance race before the new playoff format begins.

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com JOLIET – For Catholic choristers, few experiences surpass singing for the pope – except having him stop and bestow a personal blessing.

That’s what happened to 9-year-old Sadie Stengele of Joliet at the 40th International Congress of Pueri Cantores, a Catholic choral organization.

Until Sadie was adopted by cancer survivor Katherine Stengele of Joliet, she spent her first 21 months of life in a Siberian orphanage, making Pope Francis’ blessing that much more poignant.

“He stopped when he saw her little face, waved everyone away, and reached down and touched her with two hands on her cheeks,” Katherine Stengele said, adding that Sadie was wearing a rosary on her wrist that day. “I think she was very surprised it happened. She kept asking, ‘If I wash my face, will his blessing be gone?’ And I said, ‘No, it’s always going to be there.’ ”

The heart of the congress

From Dec. 26 through Jan. 3, 30 members of the Diocese of Joliet’s youth choirs – Cathedral Children’s Choir and Youth Schola – traveled to Rome as part of the pilgrimage-associated 40th International Congress of Pueri Cantores, said Claire Halbur of Joliet, associate director for the children’s choirs.

Pueri Cantores, Halbur said, means “young singer” in Latin. Every five years or so, the organization hosts an international congress in Rome.

About 40 parents, siblings and other family members accompanied the choristers on this pilgrimage, Halbur said.

The cost was $3,700, which included airfare and hotel accommodations. For about 18 months, choristers hosted fundraisers to help offset the price by half.

The subsidies applied to choristers only, Halbur said.

The additional family members who also attended paid full price. For John Bilot, 18, of Newark, that included six of his seven siblings and parents, none of whom ever had flown in a commercial airplane.

Before the family decided to make the pilgrimage together, Bilot said, they sat around the table to discuss options and pray about it, because it required a phenomenal financial commitment. Only one course seemed right.

“We trusted in God that the

trip was actually possible for us,” Bilot said.

As part of the congress, which included 4,000 singers from 18 countries, the choristers participated in a papal audience with the full congress Dec. 31 for an event called “Christmas Celebration: Carols from Around the World,” where Sadie received Pope Francis’ blessing. The pope also spoke a few words, Halbur said.

“He stressed to the children, ‘Sing and walk; sing and continue traveling on your life’s journey; sing and walk.’ He must have said it 10

times,” Halbur said.

Also as part of the congress, the choristers sang a papal Mass – mostly in Latin – the following day in honor of the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God, which is celebrated Jan. 1 on the Roman Catholic liturgical calendar, as well as World Day of Peace.

In addition, the youth raised their voices at a midweek service for world peace, Halbur said.

They received all the music for these events in September, which necessitated a second weekly two-hour practice to learn the music, Halbur said.

The music for the papal Mass was in Latin and Italian, but the youth also learned two Christmas carols – one in Italian and one in German.

Other features of the pilgrimage, Halbur said, included tours of the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, the Sistine Chapel and processing as a group through the holy doors

of St. Peter’s Basilica, singing and carrying prayer requests from loved ones back home.

That was the most memorable part of the pilgrimage for Elena Paliakas, 12, of Joliet, a member of the choir along with her brother, Simon Paliakas, 11, and their sister, Jesse Paliakas, 10. Accompanying them were their parents, Steve and Wende Paliakas – both previously visited Rome twice – and their younger siblings, Luke, 7, and Anna, 5.

Simon was impressed by the ruins, and Jesse was amazed at the Sistine Chapel’s art (“Those guys really knew what they were doing,” Jesse said). Steve and Wende Paliakas both said this opportunity to share Rome and its sights with their children was miraculous.

“I think it will increase their world view,” Wende Paliakas said, “and realize the world is a bigger place.”

Halbur had traveled to Rome five years ago with her family, but that family vacation did not include a tour of the catacombs or the Sistine Chapel. The chapel’s rich visual depictions of salvation history surrounding the viewer from all sides impacted Halbur artistically and spiritually.

“When you walk in, you have a sense of tapping into your own place of salvation, which is ongoing,” Halbur said. “I think it can take you out of place and time – which is the power of good art – but good art combined with the supernatural takes it to an even higher level.”

In bridge, solving a bidding problem will give you a goal, the number of tricks needed to make or break the contract.

In this deal, South is in four spades.

West leads the club ace, and East correctly drops the queen to show the queen and jack. (It could not be a singleton queen here.) When West continues with a low club, East wins with his 10 and shifts to the heart nine.

How should South try to attain his goal of 10 tricks?

This deal features a secondary problem. If you were North, what would you respond after partner opens one spade, and West makes a takeout double?

Over West’s double, North might jump to four spades. This is a slight underbid, but it could keep the opponents out of the auction, and a slam is unlikely given West’s double. North’s alternative is to respond two no-trump, which shows at least game-invitational values with four or more trumps. Here, South would rebid four spades.

At first glance, declarer needs to take a winning heart finesse or to find the diamond queen.

But actually the contract is guaranteed. South should win the third trick with the heart ace, draw trumps, and exit with a heart. Whichever defender takes the trick (here, West) must either lead a diamond, finding the queen for declarer; or concede a ruff-and-sluff, allowing South to ruff on the board and discard a diamond from his hand. Problem solved and goal achieved.

This annual list reveals which conventionally grown foods are most likely to contain pesticide residues. This year’s list includes apples, celery, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, grapes, nectarines, peaches, potatoes, snap peas, spinach, strawberries and sweet bell peppers. All of these should be washed before you consume them, even if they are organically grown.

Fruits and vegetables that typically do not appear on the Dirty Dozen list are those that have a thick skin that is removed before eating. By removing the skin or peel, you also remove most of the pesticide residue. As a result, it’s less important it be organic. Examples of the “Clean 15” include bananas, avocados, grapefruit and eggplant.

Why don’t we know if organic foods are healthier? Such a study would be very hard to conduct.

The research team would have to recruit thousands of people. Those people would be assigned at random to either eat organic foods or not. They would have to follow their assignment every day, for many years.

Then there’s the expense. Such a study would cost tens of millions of dollars. And, in my opinion, the U.S. government already is not providing sufficient funding for medical research.

Dear Dr. K: Many of my friends buy only organic foods. But are they really healthier than non-organic?

Dear Reader: Organic crops are grown without most synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. Organic animal products are free of antibiotics and hormones. Many people believe these foods are better for them. But we really don’t know they are.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture regulates the organic industry with strict standards. The soil where crops are grown must be inspected and shown to be free of most manmade pesticides and fertilizers. The crops cannot be genetically modified. Animals raised on organic farms receive no antibiotics or growth hormones. They are given feed that has been grown organically. And they are able to roam around outside. Processed organic foods cannot contain synthetic additives. Only foods that are 95 percent organic are certified with a “USDA Organic” seal.

There have been several studies comparing the nutritional content of organic and non-organic foods. They have found foods grown either way are quite similar in terms of vitamins, minerals and carbohydrates.

According to the USDA, organic foods have fewer pesticide residues than conventionally grown foods. But the amounts of pesticide residues in non-organic food fall within the level for safe consumption.

Similarly, we don’t have enough information yet for a verdict on animal products. Does the lack of hormones and antibiotics in organic animal products make them healthier? We don’t know.

Dear Abby: My boyfriend, “Jimmy,” and I have been together for two years. After about four months, out of necessity we moved in together and it was great.

Not long afterward, I got a job two hours away. Since I moved, we get to see each other only every two or three weeks.

The separation has been tough, but when we’re together, everything is perfect and all is right with the world. I feel we were fated to be together.

Before the move, Jimmy and I often talked about marriage, and although I am not crazy about it, I knew it meant a lot to him, so I proposed (ring and all).

I am mortified. I managed to make it out of the preschool this morning without crossing paths with the director, but I’ll be seeing this woman for the next couple of years.
