JOLIET – Students at Joliet Township High School District 204 who fall off track for graduation can get back on through credit recovery.

Two instructional coaches showed the District 204 Board of Education at their Tuesday meeting the results of the credit recovery program.

Because of the success of the program, which has put at least 17 students back on track for graduation, they recommended continuing it and seeing it developed for other courses.

“We see the benefits. We think it’s very beneficial for our students,” said Stephen Seper, Central Campus English instructional coach.

Jeff Jakob, Central campus social studies instructional coach, said one of the district’s

problems is students who fail one of their core courses and are no longer on target for graduation.

Through credit recovery, the students master the content and skills to complete those courses and recover the credit they missed the first time, he said.

Seper said the great thing about the program is that students are working at their own pace.

“They don’t feel the pressure competing with other students or feel like they’re falling behind. All of these students have the potential for being successful in this program,” he said.

Jakob said that last semester, 34 students recovered credit for a World Affairs course and that number increased to 35 Tuesday. Seper said English 1 credit recovery showed similar success with 34 students

who recovered credit.

Jakob said they will have more concrete numbers about the credit recovery program at the end of the semester.

According to their presentation, under the program the teachers analyze the grade book and assignments from students’ previous teacher and determine modules that were mastered and those that must still be completed.

Jakob said all the work students do for credit recovery is accessible online, so they can do it out of the classroom.

“This blended learning structure does provide the opportunity for students to maximize their time and enables them to complete courses at their own pace and oftentimes in an accelerated fashion,” he said.

Some of the student testimonials about the program were positive, with some students

saying they liked that they didn’t have to start all over again with their coursework.

“They’re recognizing the accelerated pace is helping them catch up to their peers, where in the past they were dug in a hole and it was very difficult to climb out of it,” Jakob said.

Superintendent Cheryl McCarthy said a huge part of the credit recovery program was not just the modules but the teachers personalizing their instruction for each student.

Jakob said under the program teachers have time to work with students on a oneon-one basis.

“Some of the students … they can work at their own pace on their own and they’re completely satisfied with that but those other students may need help and this allows them to get that one-on-one help,” he said.

Train station given tentative state approval

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The city expects to resume work on a new train station after getting tentative approval from the state to award bids on the project, Joliet officials announced Monday.

“We anticipate the final approval will come at the end of the month,” Mayor Bob O’Dekirk said Tuesday as he announced the news at the City Council meeting.

Final approval would end a stalemate that has lasted since August, when the Illinois Department of Transportation refused to approve a contractor for the job. State officials were concerned because not enough money is available to build a new Pace bus station, which was part of the original plan.

But Joliet officials, and even Pace, were in favor of moving ahead with the train station and completing the bus depot when more money is available.

Deputy City Manager Steve Jones said if contracts can be awarded at the end of the month, the train station should open by May 2017 and new commuter platforms for the Heritage Corridor line should be ready for use by early 2017.

Jones said final approval is expected once the state issues bonds that would pay for the project. The bonds are not expected to be held up because of the state’s financial problems, he said.

The train station and commuter platform are part of a multi-modal project funded with $30 million of state funding. Total costs are just under $50 million with additional

funding coming from Joliet, other transit agencies and freight railroads that benefit from a realignment of the tracks running through downtown. The original estimate for the total project was $42 million. Jones said another $3.4 million will be needed to construct the bus station. Joliet will pursue federal transportation funds available for such projects.

Courthouse agreement

The City Council unanimously approved an intergovernmental agreement with Will County in which Joliet will contribute $10 million over 20 years to the construction of a future county courthouse to ensure that it is built downtown.

The city also will waive construction fees and bond requirements valued at about $2

million. The Will County Board is expected to vote on the agreement on Thursday.

Bicentennial Park

Council members said they want to hear from Joliet Township Supervisor Dan Vera by the next City Council meeting on Feb. 2 whether he plans to make a proposal for township control of Bicentennial Park.

Vera told the City Council at a meeting in September that he believed the township would be able to restore past events that have been cut at the park since the city reduced funding during the recession.

At the time, Vera said he expected the township board to vote in October on whether to negotiate an arrangement with the city. But the matter has yet to go to the township board for consideration.

Hundreds sign up with park district to lose a combined 2,000 pounds

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – People came in different shapes and sizes and for assorted reasons to participate in the Joliet Park District’s Weight Loss Challenge, which started this week.

Weigh-ins were Monday and Tuesday for the campaign, in which participants join together in an effort to lose a combined 2,000 pounds in six weeks.

A total of 722 people signed up for what also is popularly known as the “Lose a Ton” campaign, since the challenge to lose 2,000 pounds amounts to 1 ton in weight.

For the challenge, the park district combines a public health campaign to fight obesity with a promotion to try out the Presence Inwood Athletic Club, although participants don’t have to join the club.

Organizers of the challenge, now in its third year, said many of those who signed up this week are first-timers. Others are athletic club regulars.

Some want to develop healthier habits.

“I belong to the club, but I’m not going to the club,” said Jennifer Yanak of Plainfield.

She said the Lose a Ton campaign will be her motivation to exercise more regularly.

“It’s more to have a challenge to get you going, to help push you along,” Yanak said.

“Doing something with other people always motivates me a little more.”

Lou Rhoden of Joliet is committed to losing 16 pounds, although he was pretty fit when he signed up Monday.

“I’ve got to get to my running weight,” said Rhoden, who plans to run in several marathons this year.

The fight against obesity

But combating obesity with public health campaigns can be challenging because causes vary so much depending on where people live and their cultural backgrounds and levels of income, to name a few, she said.

“Obesity is a very hard topic to tackle,” Gorszczyk said. “A lot of people are experiencing it. It’s hard to sit down with a large group and decide what

The Will County obesity rate is 29 percent, according to the latest Illinois Department of Public Health numbers from 2011. Gorszczyk noted that is

down from a previous rate of 33 percent.

More recent rates are available for youth obesity in Will County. In 2014, 14 percent of high school seniors were considered overweight, as were 18 percent of eighth-graders and 17 percent of sixth-graders.

Within Will County, the reasons for obesity can change from town to town or neighborhood to neighborhood, Gorszczyk said.

Some areas may lack grocery stores with access to fresh produce. Others may have high concentrations of fast-food restaurants that typically provide unhealthy eating options.

“Every community is different in Will County – a mix of rural, urban and suburban. So the issues affecting obesity in

Will County are different,” she said.

Lose a Ton

It was the countywide obesity rate released through Will County MAPP that caught the attention of park district officials and inspired the Weight Loss Challenge.

“We were all talking about how this is happening in our society,” said Carrie Anderson, membership coordinator at the park district. “We all decided, let’s do a challenge in our community.”

The challenge can be appealing to many people.

“Right now I’m doing a program where I watch my weight,” Lisa Blakewell of Joliet said after signing up Monday. “This fits in.”

Will County holds open house on transportation plans More online

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The public got an extensive look Tuesday at the long-range transportation plan for Will County during an open house held at Joliet Junior College.

The event showed residents aspects of the plan through rows of poster boards. Transportation experts were on hand to answer questions and visitors were encouraged to take a survey on the plan.

The plan is called Will Connects 2040 and it aspires to link transportation with economic development and jobs while also supporting road infrastructure needs and quality of life improvements.

Robin Woods of University Park said she was interested in how county officials plan to address traffic in their long-range plan given the horrible condition of Interstates 50 and 80, as well as the continuing population growth in the southwest suburbs.

“The future is out here,” she said.

Tuesday’s meeting was the first of five open houses being held throughout Will County.

“Now here we are 15 years later and we still don’t have a

plan to address intermodal traffic,” he said.

He said it’s not too late, however, and there’s still proposals that can be made.

Slammers’ Semaca talks new turf, repairs for Silver Cross Field

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The possibility of field turf at Silver Cross Field will get a serious look as the Slammers seek opportunities to make the stadium a sports tourism destination point.

Slammers majority owner Nick Semaca asked the Joliet City Council Baseball Committee to consider field turf as he presented general market numbers about the potential to bring sports such as rugby, lacrosse and football to Silver Cross Field.

A plan for field turf could also help Joliet retain the Illi-

nois High School Association baseball tournament, which is going out for bid in a couple weeks, Semaca said.

“We’ve got a marquee facility,” Semaca told the committee. “You need to do a couple of things. No. 1 is field turf.”

No decisions were made.

But Mayor Bob O’Dekirk, who attended the meeting, asked Semaca to bring back cost estimates.

O’Dekirk agreed with Semaca that the stadium would need to be reconfigured to accommodate sports other than baseball.

“We should make a commitment,” O’Dekirk said at the

meeting. “If we’re going to do this, we should do it right, so you would use the stadium for more than baseball.”

Stadium repairs

Silver Cross Field also is in need of basic repairs, Semaca said.

He presented a list of eight areas, ranging from the stadium’s steel infrastructure to deteriorating beer lines that are in need of basic maintenance or replacement.

Councilwoman Jan Quillman agreed that Silver Cross Field needs work and pointed to the carpeting and paint in the stadium suites as one ex-

ample.

“Some of these things need to be addressed sooner or later,” she said.

Semaca did not have cost estimates or a timeline for repairs, but said he was presenting the list to give the city an idea of projects needed to be done at the stadium.

Naming rights and IHSA

Semaca said he is in talks with representatives from Silver Cross Hospital as to whether they want to retain naming rights at the stadium – a revenue producer for both the Slammers and city. The naming rights contract expires at

the end of this year.

“We would love to renew with Silver Cross,” he said.

“We had a couple of discussions, and they have indicated an interest. I don’t think an interest is a definite yes, but they want to hear our thoughts.”

Both Semaca and Steve Jones, the city’s deputy city manager and economic development director, said they will push hard to keep the IHSA baseball tournament in Joliet.

“Our goal is to make a real aggressive play,” Jones said, noting more competition for the tournament is expected than when it was first awarded to Joliet.

Robert Gold-Smith was smart and fun. He’d had lots of friends.

But by the end, the bickering and arguing had gotten to be too much, and she’d decided she was better off without him.

She was reminded why Tuesday morning as they irritably squabbled again.

Their exchanges were the typical aftermath of any failed marriage and it is only because they occurred while Gold-Smith defended himself on charges he tried hiring fellow Will County Jail inmates to murder his wife that they are recorded here.

“We fell deeply in love. ...

I cannot believe what’s happened to him,” Smith said.

Six years after he allegedly attacked her in the Will County courthouse hallway and four years after allegedly trying to

have her killed, Gold-Smith, 53, was brought to trial Tuesday for solicitation of murder.

The Homer Glen attorney, who specialized in bankruptcies, has chosen a bench trial before Judge Daniel Rozak. If convicted, he faces up to 30 years in prison.

Gold-Smith and Smith married in 1997, but by 2010 his behavior had become increasingly erratic, she testified.

“He was very possessive and controlling, spying on me, trying to get me in trouble at work,” Smith said. “He was drinking a lot, doing cocaine and adjusting his medications around his partying.”

Nov. 19, 2010, was the first time Smith brought her own attorney to the couple’s divorce proceedings. When the lawyers went out in the hall to discuss scheduling, Gold-Smith began leaning on her until she walked out of the courtroom, she testified.

“I walked into the vestibule and just remember looking at people’s feet. ... I heard women screaming,” Smith said. “He kept [hitting me] until people

dragged him off.”

Smith needed 14 stitches to close cuts near her eye and was left with a chipped tooth, a large bump and floating specks permanently in her vision. She also claimed she found a carving knife and ski mask in her husband’s car after his arrest.

Gold-Smith said a friend had asked to borrow the knife to carve a turkey for Thanksgiving the next week.

“In our 16-year relationship had I ever made any physical acts [of violence] upon you before that?” Gold-Smith asked.

“Not physically,” Smith answered.

Gold-Smith also asked his ex whether his behavior occurred around the same time he alleged she had an affair with a co-worker.

“I stuck through many years of your craziness. I could take no more,” she said.

Smith also testified she has listened several times to the tape recordings an informant made in the county jail and is “absolutely” sure Gold-Smith is the voice saying, “Kill the [expletive].”

When the semi overturned, it spilled a load of salt on the ramp, and some fuel leaked

out of the saddle tanks, Vancine said, although not enough for the leak to classify as a hazardous material spill.

The ramp reopened at 1:25 p.m., Vancine said, and as of mid-afternoon Tuesday no charges were pending and the investigation was ongoing.

No injuries were reported.

The Minooka Fire Protection District also responded to the incident.

progress in 2000 Bowers homicide cold case MORRIS – Significant progress has been made in the investigation into the homicide of 17-year-old Nicole L. Bowers of Morris, according to Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland. The case was reopened last year.

On the night of Aug. 2, 2000, Bowers was watching TV when her mother went to bed, but wasn’t home when she woke up the next morning at their apartment in the 1200 block of Alicia Drive. Police said at the time the teen was a “habitual runaway” who regularly spent the night at a boyfriend’s house. Investigators became suspicious after s e v e r a l d a y s Nicole passed and Bow- Bowers ers, who had not taken any personal items, did not contact relatives.

On May 9, 2003, a surveyor found part of Bowers’ skull in a field near Bungalow and Gun Club roads in Channahon while the Utility Concrete facility was being constructed. The site is about 2 miles from where Bowers lived.

“This case for 14 years was stagnant,” Helland said. “It was opened again last February when I asked [the] Channahon Police Department to see the reports. Once I looked at the reports, I felt there were several leads that needed to be followed.”

He said when he spoke to Channahon police, they found several leads themselves that they thought should be followed up on. Witnesses have been interviewed outside of Illinois, and additional witness interviews are planned for the coming months. Helland said detectives have been following cold case investigation protocol and believe they are close to solving the crime.

“Several new witnesses have been identified and interviewed for the first time, resulting in relevant information,” Helland said. “This has helped us identify the targets of the investigation. The targets of the investigation know who they are. This isn’t a surprise to them.”

There are still “close friends and family members that we know have relevant information from the targets of the investigation in this case that have not yet come forward,” Helland said. “We are asking

them to come forward at this time.”

Helland said he cannot predict when an arrest will be made, but said detectives have never been closer to an arrest than they are today.

Narcan to be distributed to Channahon police this week

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media correspondent CHANNAHON – Channahon police are now trained to use Narcan, a medication that can stop or reverse the effects of a heroin or other opioid overdose, and supplies of the drug are expected to be dispersed within the department by the end of the week.

Channahon Police Chief Jeff Wold told village trustees at a meeting Monday that by working with Morris Hospital, the department was able to procure the Narcan doses earlier than expected.

Fatal drug overdoses are now the leading cause of injury death in the United States, surpassing deaths from motor vehicle crashes, according to the Food and Drug Administration. When Narcan is administered to someone who has overdosed on an opioid, it can counter the overdose ef-

fects within two minutes.

After the meeting, Wold said there is a need for the medicine, even though Channahon is not seeing great numbers of heroin overdoses. When paramedics and police arrive at the scene of an overdose, the paramedics take the responsibility of treatment. However, once or twice a year, an officer is the first to arrive.

Channahon officers have already trained to administer the medication, as Trustee Chantal Host reported in November. The Illinois State Police led a training session in Channahon, and the Morris Police Department trained the remaining Channahon officers who were not able to attend the initial session.

Wold said the department bought $350 of Narcan from Morris Hospital. The medication has a three-year shelf life.

It will be distributed among the detective unit, the police

station and every squad car on the road.

Also Monday:

• Trustees approved continuing an intergovernmental agreement allowing the Will County Sheriff’s Office to handle warrant entry, service and transportation of prisoners for Channahon at an annual cost to the village of $3,369. The term of the contract is three years.

• The board approved creating an additional Class I liquor license for the village. The license, which allows beer and wine sales, could be assigned to a business, Lacey’s Place, which wishes to locate at 27025 W. Eames St. Representatives from the business attended the meeting and said the beer and wine bar would also have deli sandwiches and a back room with five video gaming machines. The facility would be for those ages 21 and up.

Two Joliet businesses robbed at gunpoint

JOLIET – Police believe the same bandit robbed a Joliet motel and a video game store Monday.

The first robbery occurred about 4 p.m. when a man came into the Rodeway Inn, 1730 McDonough St., and showed the desk clerk a black handgun, Joliet Deputy Chief Al Roechner said.

“He wore a blue and orange scarf over his face. He demanded the money from the drawer, got about $85 and was last seen running eastbound on McDonough Street,” Roechner said.

The clerk was not injured.

Understand your vehicle’s warning lights - don’t ignore them!

The computerized systems in your vehicle are smart; they illuminate to let you know something needs to be corrected. If you see a warning light in your vehicle, don’t ignore it! Have it checked out by your friendly neighborhood dealer or a mechanic whom you trust.

Common warning lights include the tire pressure light (one of your tires may be underinflated), the engine temperature light (the engine is too hot), and the fuel indicator (you’re low on fuel). There’s a battery alert that illuminates when the charging system is short on power. A seatbelt reminder, an airbag indicator, a fog lamp indicator, and a washer fluid light also let you know when something is wrong or a task hasn’t been completed.

Security lights warn you when something is wrong with the anti-theft system. Also watch for the oil pressure light

(you may be low on oil) and the traction control system light (the anti-skid feature may be turned off).

One of the most important signals of a vehicle that isn’t functioning properly is the check engine light. When illuminated, it alerts the driver to a variety of potential problems.

Even if the vehicle appears to be running normally, one of the systems isn’t operating properly; it could indicate a faulty ignition, fuel injection, or emission control system. If the check engine light comes on, get the vehicle checked as soon as possible. Ignoring the light could result in costly repairs.

If the light is flashing, the condition is more critical and must be checked immediately.

When scheduling service, make sure you mention the warning light(s). A qualified technician will connect your vehicle’s computer system to a diagnostic scan tool, which will help indicate why the check engine light was activated. CREST HILL – Crest Hill City Hall closed Tuesday because of a sewer backup.

The issue was discovered early Tuesday by the police department in the building at 1610 Plainfield Road, Mayor Ray Soliman said. As a result of the backup, City Hall had no usable public bathrooms and closed for the day, with most city employees sent home. The police department remained open.

The city hoped to have the backup repaired Tuesday and reopen the building Wednesday, Soliman said. He said a similar issue occurred at City Hall about a year ago.

“It’s an old building that has maintenance problems,” he said.

owner of a business takes out a workers’ compensation policy for his business, he covers all employees, including himself. However, in Illinois, an owner of a business is allowed to “opt out”; meaning that he himself will not be covered for workers’ compensation. As an owner of a small business myself, I know that even in sedentary occupations, owners will do things in the office, or travel in vehicles, which may result in accidental injuries.

Owners are frequently “traveling employees” who are covered while they travel for reasonably foreseeable activities. Workers’ compensation will pay all the medical

bills 100 cents on the dollar, pay for lost time, and pay a disability settlement, which can be vital when an owner is taken out of his business for any period of time. Even if an owner only makes profits, as opposed to wages, there are ways to evaluate what a “like and kind” employee would earn to assess a disability award.

I have represented owners of businesses who never thought they would have an on the job injury, and the ones that have kept themselves within their coverage have been very happy that they did. I have also known owners who have opted out, and have suffered quite a financial loss because of it. While no one expects that it will ever happen to them, occasionally injuries are catastrophic, and many owners are not sufficiently protected in the absence of workers’ compensation from what can be a significant loss. adno=0368145

I ended the year with some fun, but strange, laws still on the books in Illinois. I thought I’d start this year with some interesting laws that any injured person might want to know. Please note this is not complete and you should always consult a lawyer for your particular matter as the facts of a case may be relevant for determining when a statute begins to run.

1. If you do not file a claim within the Statute of Limitations applicable to your case, you are forever barred from filing the claim.

2. A person has 5 years from the date of accident to file a claim for property damage resulting from an automobile accident; 3. A person, 18 years or older, has 2 years from the date of accident to file a claim for injuries unless the defendant is a governmental agency or a Dram Shop claim, then the statute is only 1 year.

4. Children and certain adults under a disability have an extended period of time to file a claim for injuries. For example, children, have 2 years after their 18th birthday or 2 years from the date of accident, whichever is longer (except for instances involving governmental agencies).

5. An action for Wrongful Death is 2 years; for a survival action it is the later of (a) the expiration of the limitations period for the underlying claim; or (b) one year from the date of the decedent’s death; 6. Product Liability cases have, in addition to the usual statutes of limitations, something called a Statute of Repose. This means, even if you are within the 2 years (or 5 years) from the date of accident, if the machine or product that caused your injury is of a certain age, then you are barred from suing the manufacturer of the product. The statute of repose states that a products liability case may not be brought after the earliest of: (1) 12 years from the date the defective product was first sold, leased or delivered by a seller; (2) 10 years from the date the defective product was first sold, leased or delivered to its initial user, consumer or other non-seller; (3) 10 years from the date the product was altered (if the injury was caused by a product alteration).

As you can see, sometimes figuring out if, and more importantly, when, a lawsuit can be filed can be complicated. When in doubt, seek the advice of an attorney.

My client didn’t remember calling a plumber, but being the trusting person he is, he let them further into the house. Luckily, my client’s son and daughter-in-law were upstairs. His daughter-in-law, hearing strange voices downstairs went to investigate. She asked the guys “Who are you and what do you want?” They said someone called yesterday for a plumber. The daughter in law asked who called.

The name the guys gave was similar to my client’s first name, but it wasn’t his name. The daughterin-law in a very emphatic tone told the guys to “Get the _____ out of this house.” As they not-so-nicely approached her, her husband appeared from upstairs and in no uncertain terms told them to leave the house immediately. The guys left.

My client’s son and daughterin-law tried to get the license plate number of the truck. They didn’t; and there were no identifying markings on the black pickup truck.

Don’t open the door if you have no idea who is at the door. Don’t give out personal information over the phone. Make sure someone is house-sitting your home during a wake and funeral and that someone is with you or checks in on you for several days (or even weeks) after your loved one is buried.

Second, there have been some major changes in the Medicaid law for people going into a nursing home. With the State of Illinois in such perilous financial shape, many family assets which used to be exempt are not exempt anymore.

The State of Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (formerly the Illinois Department of Public Aid) has implemented changes which severely restrict what assets a person can legally shelter. It is important for people to contact an “elder law” attorney when a loved one is entering a nursing home. Go online or look in the newspaper or phone book for an “elder law” attorney in your area. There may still be ways legally to conserve your loved one’s assets as they enter a nursing home. However, your loved one’s philosophy on asset conservation may parallel that of my father’s, which is: “I plan to spend all my money and become a burden to my children.” adno=0368141

First, beware of who knocks on your door the day after a loved one’s funeral. I have a client who is 81 years old. His wife died several months ago. At 8:30am the morning after he buried his wife, two big guys showed up at the back door with large wrenches in their hands and other plumbing tools on their belts. They rang the back door bell and my client answered the door. These guys had opened the screen door as my client answered the door, they walked right into the kitchen and announced “Hi. We’re here to fix the plumbing.”

OBITUARIES JOHN M. BARDEN John M. Barden, age 86 years, passed away Saturday, Jan. 16, 2016, at Sunny Hill Nursing Home of Will County with his loving family by his side.

Born in Joliet and a lifelong resident. He was the owner and operator of NEDRAB Company of Joliet until he retired. Member of the Irving AC. Preceded in death by his parents, Alva and Sarah (nee Staley) Barden; and his son, Michael John Barden.

Survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Delores C. (nee Helmle); one daughter, Sally (Bob Lardi) Pasteris; eight grandchildren, Giovanni (Kate) Pasteris, Nichole (Nick) Pasteris-Orlando; Heather, Michael, Kristina, Todd (Lauren), Bryce and Rayna Barden; seven great-grandchildren; his loyal companion, Molly B; numerous nieces and nephews. She returned to the Midwest in 2003 to be close to her daughters, living first in Waukesha for seven years and lastly at Willow Falls in Crest Hill.

Fay Keating (nee Baumer), died on Sunday, Jan. 17, 2016, at the age of 101.

She is survived by two adoring daughters, Barbara Jansa Zimmer and Susan Jansa Jarz Marconi. In addition, there are five grandchildren, William (Julie), Nicholas (Lori) and Peter (Deisey) Zimmer; Sarah Jarz (Ernest) Benion and Alex (Addy) Jarz. Fay had 10 great-grandchildren, Lauren and Jerod Zimmer; Sophia, Camille, Simon, Elias, Jesse and Ezra Benion; Adrianna and Austin Jarz. She also leaves behind her loving and devoted caregiver, Jodi Watson.

Fay was born on Nov. 7, 1914, in London, England. She started sewing as a young girl and ultimately became a proficient seamstress and dress designer with her own business in London. At the height of the Blitz during World War II, her family’s house was bombed, which necessitated their move to Oxford. It was there that she met her future husband, William Jansa, an Army medic, where he was stationed. They were married after the war on July 11, 1945. Fay later traveled on the HMS Queen Mary across the Atlantic Ocean to meet up with William and then lived in Waukesha, Wisconsin, where Barbara and Susan were born. Fay continued her trade at home in Waukesha, as well as teaching, tailoring and fur remodeling at the local vocational school. She

CHICAGO – A University of Illinois analysis says the state received about $53 million less in a recent bond sale than it could have because of Illinois’ poor financial shape.

The university’s Institute of Government and Public Affairs released the analysis Tuesday of Illinois’ $480 million general obligation bond sale. It found Illinois received $53 million less in Jan. 14’s sale compared with bonds issued in 2006, when Illinois’ credit rating was better.

The study found estimated losses could grow to more than $400 million annually if fiscal troubles continue.

By MARK SHERMAN The Associated Press WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court stepped into a boiling political dispute over immigration Tuesday, setting up a likely decision in the middle of a presidential campaign marked by harsh rhetoric about immigrants.

The justices agreed to review whether President Barack Obama, acting without congressional approval, has the power to shield from deportation up to 5 million immigrants living in the U.S. illegally and make them eligible to work without fear of being rounded up.

Underscoring the political dimension, the case will be argued in April and decided by late June, about a month before both political parties gather for their nominating conventions.

If Obama prevails against opponents led by Republican governors, there would be roughly seven months left in his presidency to implement plans that would affect the parents of U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents, as well as some people who arrived in the United States before they turned 16.

“We are confident that the policies will be upheld as lawful,” White House spokeswoman Brandi Hoffine said after the court’s announcement Tuesday.

At issue is the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans program, which Obama said in late 2014 would allow people who have been in the United States more than five years and who have children who are in the country legally to “come out of the shadows and get right with the law.” He also announced the expansion of a program that affects people who came here illegally as children.

When he announced the measures 14 months ago, Obama said he was acting under his own authority because Congress had failed to overhaul the immigration system. The Senate did pass legislation on a bipartisan vote, but House Republicans refused to put the matter to a vote.

Texas quickly led a legal challenge to Obama’s program on behalf of 26 states and has won every round in court so far. Most recently, in November, the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in favor of the states, prompting the appeal to the Supreme Court.

Texas actually asked the Supreme Court not to hear the case challenging those rulings, but state Attorney General Ken Paxton said he was pleased the justices will examine the president’s constitutional power to intercede without congressional approval. “In deciding to hear this case, the Supreme Court recognizes the importance of the separation of powers,” Paxton said.

The administration said Texas and the other states don’t even have the right to challenge the plan in federal court. The lower courts decided that Texas does have the right, or standing, to sue because at least 500,000 people living in Texas would qualify for work permits and thus become eligible for driver’s licenses, the costs of which are subsidized by the state.

“Texas would incur millions of dollars in costs,” the state said in its brief.

The justices also said they would consider whether, if the states can pursue their lawsuit, Obama exceeded his authority under federal laws and the Constitution.

Some court observers saw in the court’s decision to look at Obama’s power under the Constitution a potentially ominous sign. “It suggests that the court is willing to engage President Obama’s entire use of executive orders,” said Jeffrey Rosen, president and CEO of the nonpartisan National Constitution Center.

Case at high court has potential to be landmark WASHINGTON – Watching Rebecca Friedrichs stroll down the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court last week brought to mind a biblical image: David facing Goliath.

Friedrichs is a California elementary schoolteacher who chose to take on organized labor.

She didn’t like how a union she did not agree with was taking money from her paycheck.

Being forced to give money to a group she disagrees with struck her not only as unfair, but also as a basic violation of her right to free speech.

For example, she doesn’t like how tenure protects bad teachers. But the California Teachers Association, which she is compelled to give money to, defends tenure.

And she was angered when the union wouldn’t stand up for quality teachers with low

seniority when her school district had layoffs.

In half of the states, Friedrichs wouldn’t have to give her union a dime.

But in states such as California (and Illinois) that don’t have right-to-work laws, she can be compelled to give a union money just to keep her job.

The situation so angered Friedrichs that she fought it all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.

I sat in the courtroom and listened as the justices grilled her attorney – and those on the other side. It has the makings to be a landmark case.

And it would appear Friedrichs had a receptive audience.

If the high court rules in her favor, it’s likely that anyone who works for any unit of local, state or federal government anywhere in the United

They could choose to, but they wouldn’t have to.

Why just government workers? Because everything government does is political.

And, in political matters, free speech is paramount.

Chief Justice John Roberts asked the California solicitor general who argued against Friedrichs’ position to give an example of “nonpolitical speech” that the union negotiates at the bargaining table.

The example David Frederick, a lawyer for unions involved in the case, gave was mileage reimbursement rates.

But Roberts countered that even that constitutes political

speech because it deals with how tax dollars should be spent.

“Everything that is collectively bargained with the government is within the political sphere,” Justice Antonin Scalia said.

Most Americans would say it would be wrong to force a Democrat to fund the Republican Party or for a Republican to be compelled to give to the Democratic Party.

But, for years, government has allowed another group of political players – labor unions – to be treated much differently.

Frederick said a ruling in favor of Friedrichs would create a class of “free riders” who benefit from union-negotiated wages and benefits but refuse to support the unions financially.

But Roberts found that contention silly.

“If employees have shown overwhelmingly they want collective bargaining, it seems to me the ‘free rider’ problem is insignificant,” he said.

Justice Anthony Kennedy said the issue is one of “compelled riders,” not “free riders.”

“The union is basically making these teachers compelled riders on issues which they strongly disagree,” he said.

For Friedrichs – and most Americans – that situation just seems wrong.

And if the questions asked by the Supreme Court justices this month are any indication, most of them think so, too.

JOLIET – Luke Mander did not play football his junior year to concentrate on basketball.

The return to his defensive end position in football last fall may have been the tonic to turn him into a beast of a post player in basketball.

Mander went hard to the

basket and scored 23 points Tuesday night as Joliet Catholic used a 13-0 run in the fourth quarter to beat nonconference foe Lincoln-Way Central, 67-55, in a battle between two of the top teams in the Joliet area.

“This was a very good Tuesday night basketball game,” Central coach Bob Curran said.

“What really makes this a

good win is we started very well against an excellent team,” JCA coach Joe Gura said. “They came back and punched us right in the mouth.

“We took it, and we went on and played as a good a second half as we could have played.”

The Hilltoppers (14-2), who stretched their winning streak to nine, battled to a 29-15 lead midway through the second quarter. But back came the

Knights. They got within 3125 at halftime, then scored the first eight points of the third quarter to lead, 33-31.

Mander scored five straight points, and three consecutive Jalen Jackson baskets – the first two from 3-point range – restored a 45-41 lead for JCA. The Hilltoppers then spread the floor and went to Mander and Pete Ragen inside. Curran called that the turning point.

“I tried to get the attention of our guys not to go out after them when they spread us out,” he said. “We panicked on defense, and with those good guards they have, they broke us down and scored. Then we didn’t score, and all of a sudden we’re down six or whatever.

Shooting woes doom Providence vs. St. Francis

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – One of the most frustrating things any basketball team will experience is working hard to get a good selection of shots, then see many of them fail to hit the mark.

That is what has affected Providence’s boys basketball team throughout much of the season, and it continued in Tuesday’s nonconference game against St. Francis.

The Celtics got off to a 2-of17 start from the floor and wound up connecting on only 13-of-47 attempts for the game as they fell, 53-41, to the Spartans at Sacred Heart gym.

“We just can’t make a shot, and that has kind of been the story of our season,” Celtics coach Tim Trendel said.

“Guys are struggling right now. We have guys who we know can make shots, but right now they’re just not dropping.

“Right now, everyone’s confidence is down, and the only way that we’re going to get out of it is to keep shooting. The effort from the kids is there – and we’re holding teams to where we need to be – but we just have to be able to score.”

Providence (4-15) trailed, 8-6, in the opening quarter when its shooting woes began. St. Francis (6-10) capitalized by going on a 14-0 run that stretched into the second quarter to build a 22-6 advantage with 5:38 left in the half.

But the Celtics started to battle back behind a 7-0 run highlighted by a 3-point shot from Eric Justice (six points).

“Right now, everyone’s confidence is down, and the only way that we’re going to get out of it is to keep shooting. The effort from the kids is there – and we’re holding teams to where we need to be – but we just have to be able to score.”

Providence opened the second half with a jumper from Scott Slocum and two more free throws from Drew to make it 27-24 with 5:19 left in the third period, but that’s as close as it would get. The

Spartans went on a 13-5 run to go up, 40-29, with eight minutes left.

The Celtics managed to get to within nine points at 47-38 with 2:40 left in the contest following an old-fashioned three-point play from Jake Schutter (nine points). But St. Francis managed to wrap things up as Shane Walker (17 points, seven rebounds) hit four straight free throws.

St. Francis also received 10 points from Gabriel Johnson and eight points from Timothy Lilly, while Providence also got five points and five rebounds from Brian Castelli.

“We’re snake-bit so, we have to find a way to put the ball in the basket right now,” Trendel said. “We have to change our luck somehow. I tried changing the ball, and maybe we’ll try a different ball in our next game, and we’ll keep going from there.

“But our kids are resilient, and they fought all the way until the end tonight.

When the shots start dropping, you’ll see a different team, and that’s what we’re banking on. When that starts happening, I think that we’re going to surprise a team or two.”

Jackson matched Mander’s offensive output with 23 points. Ragen chipped in nine, six in the fourth quarter, and Harry Davis had seven.

“Mander was very important inside, and Ragen got a couple of big baskets,” Gura said. “They were keys inside.”

Gura said there is no question playing football last fall helped Mander with his strength and quickness on the basketball floor.

“They’re one of the better offensive teams we have seen,”

Curran said of the Hilltoppers.

“They have five guys who can put the ball in the basket, and even No. 1 off the bench [Donavan Finch] can score.

“Still, this was a closer game than the score. But when a team like this gets up on you by three or four points and then spreads it out, it’s hard.

They’re a good club with very good guards. They’re 14-2 for a reason.”

Central also has an outstanding record for a reason.

“They are an excellent basketball team and very wellcoached,” Gura said. “I would not want to play them again.”

We will miss you, Mark.

The 67th annual Old Timers Baseball Association of Will County banquet is on tap Thursday night at the Clarion Hotel, with Hall of Fame manager Whitey Herzog the guest speaker.

Major league umpire Mark Carlson, a Joliet native and Joliet West graduate, was a regular at the annual Old Timers banquet when he lived here. But he and his wife, Marie, along with their daughters, Grace and Audrey, moved to Tampa, Florida, four years ago, so we no longer are graced with his presence – at least not on a regular basis.

We still are good on the umpiring front, however, as longtime American League umpire and Lockport native Bill Haller is planning to be here Thursday.

“Tell everybody there that I said hi,” Carlson said during our Tuesday conversation. “I always enjoyed the Old Timers banquet.”

Carlson, who at one time wrote a weekly “Ask The Ump” column for The Herald-News, is coming off a season where was able to check off an all-important box. After working the National League Division Series between the Cubs and Cardinals last fall, he was assigned to the World Series between the Royals and Mets. He was behind the plate for Game 2.

“I’ve always set goals along the way, short-term and long-term,” said Carlson, who made his major league debut in 1999 and is entering his 17th big league season. “I’ve checked quite a few boxes along the way.

“This postseason will go down as a lifelong memory.

The World Series is always something you shoot for.

Another lasting memory was a couple years ago, when I worked the opening series in Australia between the Dodgers and Diamondbacks.”

Carlson graduated in 1987 from Joliet West, where he

In fact, he will be inducted next month into the Parkland Athletic Hall of Fame.

After junior college, he spent a year in the Marine Corps, then began pursuit of a career in umpiring.

He worked in the Pioneer, Midwest, Florida State, Southern, International and Arizona Fall leagues before getting the call to the big leagues.

“The minors can be a difficult road,” Carlson said.

“There are lots of ups and downs. Sometimes, you have to battle through situations that could defeat your attitude.”

Carlson stayed the course.

Now, his résumé shows he has worked five Division Series, League Championship series in 2013 and 2014 and the World Series last fall.

“The World Series is the same game, but it has more focus because it’s the only game going on at the time,” Carlson said. “The eyes of all the fans and all the media are on you, so the pressure is on to do the job you know how to do.”

No less an authority than Haller, who worked four World Series in his illustrious career, spoke at the quarterly meeting of the Old Timers in December and said Carlson is doing an excellent job and deserved the World Series assignment.

Even in the Fall Classic, however, things are different from how they were when Carlson broke in. A form of instant replay began in 2008, and the current system where managers can challenge a call was instituted in 2014.

Carlson’s thoughts?

“Replay is a part of the game now,” he said. “It’s here to stay. The way I look at it, if it prevents me from being

put in a situation where I’m known for getting something wrong, it’s appropriate. If it can prevent a situation where I have a play named after me, that’s a good thing.”

A technical advance that began years ago is the strike zone box on television.

“The TV box is for entertainment only,” Carlson said.

“It’s not always exact. We umpires have an accurate system that evaluates us in regard to our strike zone.

That’s what matters.”

Carlson has scored well in regard to his strike zone, which is among the reasons he was tabbed for World Series duty last fall.

Another box he would like to check is that of being a crew chief. That’s not easy, however, because of the availability of positions.

“A lot of things go into it, and availability is No. 1,” Carlson said. “There are not many spots ever available.

It’s a goal to be a crew chief,

but it’s not here yet. Regardless, umpiring is a great job.”

As he was last year, Brian Gorman again will be the crew chief on Carlson’s crew.

Mike DiMuro also is back.

Quinn Wolcott is new to the crew.

Each umpiring crew has four one-week breaks during the season that are built into the schedule. The umpires do not have a say in when those breaks occur.

“Schedules are bid by the crew chiefs based on their seniority,” Carlson said. “It works out fairly evenly on how often you see the different cities.

“It’s always nice to be near home, but it doesn’t always work out that way.”

Carlson lives in Tampa these days, but his roots are in Joliet. As Haller said, our community should be proud of the work he is doing.

Hawks win team-record 12th straight, top Predators

By TERESA M. WALKER The Associated Press NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Patrick Kane had a goal and an assist, and the Blackhawks beat the Nashville Predators, 4-1, Tuesday night for their franchise-record 12th straight win.

The Hawks tied the Florida Panthers’ recent streak for the longest this season in the NHL. The Hawks have four games left before the All-Star break to chase the NHL record of 17 straight wins by the 1992-93 Pittsburgh Penguins.

Rookie forward Richard Panik had a goal and an assist, Artem Anisimov also scored, and Artemi Panarin added two assists for the Hawks. Andrew Desjardins scored into an empty net.

Corey Crawford won his ninth straight, as the Hawks took the season series, 3-1, with a game remaining against their Central Division rivals.

Ryan Ellis scored for Nashville, which has lost six of seven.

The Hawks tied the team mark Sunday with a 5-2 win over Montreal, matching their 11 straight victories during the 2012-13 season.

with plenty of fans making the trip, and the Hawks sent them home happy after their sixth straight road victory.

The Hawks also scored the first goal for a 10th straight game when Anisimov pushed a backhander past a diving Pekka Rinne with 21.2 seconds left in the first period.

Panik made it 2-0 early in the second with a wrister from the edge of the right circle. Nashville beat Crawford 15 seconds later on a slap shot by Ellis, but Kane took off on a breakaway and beat Rinne with a backhander a minute later for a 3-1 lead.

Rinne, who started after backup Carter Hutton shut out Minnesota on Saturday night, gave up three goals on the first 13 shots he faced. The All-Star goalie and three-time Vezina Trophy finalist is 1-5-1 in his past seven starts.

The Predators couldn’t get the puck past Crawford after Ellis’ goal. They went 0 for 3 with the man advantage, including two power plays in the third.

Craig Smith hit a post in the first, and Crawford saved a shot by Smith in the third off his right foot.

The Hawks scored the first goal in 11 of its past 12 games and improved to 29-3-2 when scoring first. Panik has scored a goal in two straight games.

OSWEGO – The Plainfield co-op boys’ swimming and diving team is about halfway through the 2015-16 season, and on Tuesday, the Wildcats celebrated a 100-83 victory over Oswego-Oswego East in an Independent Conference dual meet at Oswego East. “(The season) has been going really well,” Plainfield coach George Sam said. “We have a young group, and this is kind of a cool rivalry.

(Oswego-Oswego East) owned us for eight years, and we got the last three in a row now, so it’s fun.

“It was a really competitive meet.

A lot of our boys are friends with their boys. We have a good bunch of kids, and things have been coming along really nice.”

Plainfield placed first in eight of 12 events. Brandon Tran won two individual events and two relay events – the 100-yard butterfly (53.16), 100 breaststroke (58.03) and as part of the 200 medley relay team with Merek Avery, Ryan Buss and Kyle Potts (1:39.72) and 200 free relay with Avery, Ryan Netzel and Potts (1:30.41).

Netzel also was first in the 200 freestyle (1:45.47), Potts in the 200 IM (2:08.91), JP Fox in the 50 freestyle (4:46.84) and Jack Farnan in the 100 backstroke (58.31).

Goldman, Amos named to writers’ All-Rookie team

By ARTHUR ARKUSH aarkush@chicagofootball.com The Pro Football Writers of America 2015 All-Rookie team includes a pair of Bears in nose guard Eddie Goldman and safety Adrian Amos.

Goldman, a second-round pick from Florida State, had 4.5 sacks, which led the Bears’ defensive line and ranked third among all NFL rookies. Goldman made 12 starts, playing in 50.1 percent of the Bears’ defensive snaps, second among Bears D-linemen.

Amos, a fifth-round pick from Penn State, paced the Bears’ defense in tackles (108) and snaps (1,027), including playing every down since Week 4, according to coaches’ film review. Amos added four pass breakups, a tackle for loss and a sack.

The Bears expected to get major contributions from veterans Antrel Rolle and Ryan Mundy at safety and from Jeremiah Ratliff up front for a defense in transition.

But with Mundy going on injured reserve in August, Rolle missing nine games and Ratliff providing virtually no production before his October dismissal, Goldman and Amos played bigger roles than expected for a defense that ascended from No. 30 in 2014 to No. 14 this past season.

Ryan Pace received good mileage from his first draft class despite top pick Kevin White missing his entire rookie campaign. In addition to Goldman and Amos, Hroniss Grasu started eight games at center, and Jeremy Langford tied for the team lead in total touchdowns (seven).

MEN’S BASKETBALL No. 7 Maryland edges Northwestern in overtime

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Melo Trimble scored 18 points, Diamond Stone made a pivotal three-point play with 1:13 left in overtime and No. 7 Maryland squeezed past Northwestern, 62-56, Tuesday night.

The Terrapins (17-2, 6-1 Big Ten) shot 44 percent and were outrebounded, 41-31, by the scrappy, hustling Wildcats (15-5, 3-4).

But Trimble came up big in overtime, opening the scoring with a three-point play and getting assists on two baskets, including the layup by Stone that put Maryland ahead, 58-55.

Despite struggling mightily, the Terrapins swept the season series after beating the Wildcats, 72-59, Jan. 2.

Aaron Falzon scored 13 points for the Wildcats before fouling out with 3:36 left in overtime. Bryant McIntosh had 12 points on 5-for-18 shooting.

It was a milestone night for Ferrell. The senior guard broke Michael Lewis’ career record for assists (545). He has 553.

Ferrell moved within 13 points of passing Eric Anderson for No. 10 on the Hoosiers’ career scoring list.

All that came on a night that the Hoosiers (16-3, 6-0 Big Ten) extending their winning streak to 11 and set a school record with 19 3-pointers.

Bacon, eggs, toast and a skillet of spaghetti?

his is the ultimate breakfast-for-dinner dish: bacon, eggs and toast (in the form of buttery crumbs), combined with spaghetti. Comfort food to the highest degree, it’s especially satisfying after a stressful day at school or the office. And all of the ingredients, except for the bacon, are cooked in one skillet.

Most of us fry our bacon in a skillet, but I prefer to lay it out on a rack set into a rimmed and parchment- or foil-lined baking sheet and bake it in the oven. That way, the bacon cooks more evenly. Also, it doesn’t curl up and make a greasy mess of the stovetop. Then again, if you insist on making this a true one-pot meal, you can cook the bacon in the skillet before adding any of the other ingredients, and substitute some of the bacon fat left in the pan for the butter in the recipe.

This recipe’s one unconventional technique is cooking the spaghetti in a skillet rather than a big pot of boiling water.

Just take heart knowing both the Spanish and Mexicans use this same technique. First, the pasta is toasted in oil in the skillet. Then the liquid is added and the pasta is simmered until it is al Breakfast-For-Dinner Spaghetti dente. Why bother with this method? Because the pasta picks up more flavor AP photo this way.

You add the eggs when the pasta is just about finished. They need to be cooked over medium-low heat, stirred constantly, and pulled off the heat the minute they’re done so they don’t overcook and get tough.

The breadcrumbs are the finishing touch; half are mixed into the pasta and eggs, half are sprinkled on top. If you can’t resist the temptation to add some cheese, you always can substitute some Parmesan for the crumbs.

Once you try cooking pasta this way, I’ll bet you invent all sorts of variations to add to your lineup of weeknight dinners.

Breakfast-For-Dinner Spaghetti

Start to finish: 1 hour 15 minutes (40 minutes active) Servings: 6

8 ounces bacon 5 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided 2 cups fresh breadcrumbs (made by pulsing homemade-style white bread in a food processor; you will need about 4 slices) Kosher salt and ground black pepper 2 cups thinly sliced yellow onion 2 teaspoons minced garlic 12 ounces spaghetti, broken in half 2 cups low-sodium chicken broth

1½ cups water 6 large eggs, lightly beaten with a tablespoon of water and a pinch of salt Heat the oven to 375 degrees F. Line a rimmed baking sheet with kitchen parchment or foil, then set a wire rack over it. Arrange the bacon in a single layer on the rack and bake on the oven’s middle shelf until crispy, about 20 to 25 minutes. Remove the bacon from the oven and set aside to cool.

Crumble the bacon.

While the bacon is cooking, in a large nonstick or stick-resistant skillet, heat 3 tablespoons of the butter over medium.

Add the breadcrumbs and cook, stirring

constantly, until they are golden and crisp, 6 to 8 minutes. Transfer the crumbs to a bowl and toss with a hefty pinch each of salt and pepper. Set aside.

Wipe out the skillet and set over medium, then add the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter and the onion. Cook, stirring occasionally, until golden, about 10 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, for 1 minute. Transfer to a bowl and set aside.

Add the pasta to the skillet and toast over medium heat, stirring often, until light golden, 6 to 8 minutes. Add the stock, water and ½ teaspoon salt. Bring to a boil and cook at a vigorous simmer, stirring often, until the pasta is tender, about 10 minutes (the liquid will reduce

by about two-thirds).

Make a well in the center of the skillet, add the eggs and cook over medium-low, stirring constantly, until the eggs are just scrambled.

Remove from the heat, return the onions and half of the breadcrumbs to the skillet and toss well. Season with salt and pepper, then divide among 6 serving plates. Top each portion with some of the remaining crumbs and the bacon.

Serve immediately.

Nutrition information per serving: 590 calories; 280 calories from fat (47 percent of total calories); 31 g fat (13 g saturated; 0 g trans fats); 265 mg cholesterol; 670 mg sodium; 57 g carbohydrate; 3 g fiber; 5 g sugar; 21 g protein.

Strangely, mine was that I did not realize dogs are more expensive pets than cats. But this column concerns opener’s bidding of a 6-4 hand, six in a major and four in a minor. In today’s deal, look at the South hand. You open one spade, and partner responds two clubs. Would you rebid two diamonds or two spades?

Some players advise rebidding in the six-card major with a minimum opening, but mentioning the fourcard minor with extra values. This is debatable.

Recently, I have seen two deals where the major-suit rebid resulted in an excellent club fit being missed.

Agreed, if you do not have an eightcard fit anywhere and partner is weak, rebidding in the six-card suit will be best, but why be so pessimistic?

In this deal, South should have rebid two diamonds. Then surely North-South would have reached six diamonds, in which South would have taken one spade, three hearts, two diamonds, four clubs and a ruff in each hand.

At the table, South rebid three spades, a bad overbid with the club void. North used Roman Key Card Blackwood, then signed off in five spades when two key cards (two aces, or one ace and the spade king) were missing. West led the diamond five, after which South had to lose one diamond and two spades.

If you’re in pain, all this activity may seem impossible. But in many cases, exercise can actually help you feel better.

If you have osteoarthritis, for example, regular exercise not only helps maintain joint function, but also relieves stiffness and decreases pain and fatigue.

Healthy adults should aim for 30 minutes of moderate exercise a day, five days a week. But even if you can’t do the recommended amount, be as physically active as your abilities and conditions allow.

What’s “moderate” exercise? Experts define it scientifically as the amount of physical activity needed to cause your body to use a certain amount of oxygen, measured at a “metabolic equivalent,” or MET. Moderate exercise is in the range of 3 to 6 METs. Briskly walking at between 3 to 5 miles per hour (like walking 2 miles in 30 minutes) qualifies. So does leisurely bicycling, swimming, playing golf (if you walk the course), cleaning your home and mowing your lawn.

You don’t have to exercise vigorously (defined as more than 6 METs) to achieve major health benefits. So you don’t need to go jogging or perform calisthenics, for example.

However, vigorous exercise is healthy for most people.

Here’s the bottom line: There is no pill as good for your health as regular moderate exercise.

How can I continue to stay as active as possible?

Dear Reader: Most of us take for granted the stamina, strength, balance, coordination and range of motion needed to perform even simple acts such as getting out of bed, heading down the stairs and walking around the block.

But when we lose these basic skills, we begin to understand how much of living well relies on being able to move.

At first, you can compensate for an impairment caused by health problems or just aging. You learn to move slower and more deliberately, for example.

But don’t try to move less, just more slowly. If you move less, you may gain weight, stop exercising and withdraw from social relationships. The resulting physical, emotional and mental decline further restricts your mobility.

You can take steps to prevent future mobility impairments and reduce existing ones. The single most important thing you can do is to engage regularly in physical activity.

Regular activity can help you control your weight. It’s the key to keeping your muscles and bones strong, your joints working properly, your heart healthy and your metabolism balanced. The more you move, the better your balance will be. And that’s on top of all the other health benefits of regular exercise. Those include a greatly reduced risk of heart disease, stroke, Type 2 diabetes, depression and dementia.

Get some of your activity from exercise. Start with aerobic exercise, like walking, bicycling or water aerobics. Add in some strength training, flexibility and balance exercises.

Also strive to increase your routine daily physical activities. For example, make it a point to go up and down the stairs more often. Park further
