JOLIET – To accelerate state-mandated efforts to consolidate Will County’s six 911 dispatch centers, county staff on Wednesday offered to pay for the construction of a larger, regional dispatch center to be incorporated into a new sheriff’s facility on Laraway Road.

Nick Palmer, chief of staff for Will County Executive Larry Walsh Sr., on Wednesday presented a letter to members of the Will County Emergency Telephone System Board in which county leaders offered to pay for construction in exchange for a lease agreement.

The county expects to break ground this year on the new sheriff’s facility.

“Because this debate was going on, [the county] has been holding a footprint in the design to accommodate a dispatch

centers would not have to buy vacant land and build anew or rehab an older building to merge.

Board member Julie PonceDoyle and several others were in favor of the county’s plan.

But it’s still unclear how consolidation will play out.

ETSB Vice Chairman Steve Rauter urged members to consider merging one of six dispatch centers, likely Romeoville, into his Wescom building – a 17,000-square-foot facility in Plainfield built just a few years ago that handles calls for nearly 20 communities, including Bolingbrook, Braidwood and Wilmington.

Will County does not dispatch firefighters and now handles only emergency calls in some unincorporated areas.

ETSB System Administrator Steve Figved said the 911 board will apply for state grant dollars to recapture costs asso-

ciated with past consolidation projects. But Rauter said he thinks the likelihood of receiving those dollars is slim.

“We’re probably chasing after a ghost,” Rauter said.

Romeoville Police Department Cmdr. Ken Kroll, who sits on the 911 board, said Wednesday the village’s center – built in 2010 – prefers seeking a waiver from the state that argues a merger is economically unreasonable. But in the same breath, Kroll said he understands it’s an unrealistic goal.

The ETS board voted, 11-3, to not submit a waiver to the state. Those who voted against the motion included Pam Buzan and William Mort, both with Crete dispatch, and Kroll, with Romeoville.

The statewide 911 overhaul is designed to shorten emergency response times and bring 911 services to nine downstate counties without them.

Officials sense hope in CN’s commitment to expedite project

After a question about the unfinished pedestrian grade crossing with the EJ&E railroad at 135th Street, Director of Public Works Allen Persons told residents at the monthly Coffee with the Mayor meeting Wednesday morning that Canadian National, or CN, is fast-tracking its remaining work on the crossing.

center,” Palmer said. “In short, the county is willing to build a 15,000-square-foot facility in consultation with dispatch. It would be built and paid for by the county and turned over to the dispatch center.”

As part of the state’s plan to revamp the funding and setup of 911 emergency response systems, the 911 board has been engaged in conversations in the last year in hopes of reaching a consensus. County officials must submit a report to the state by July 2016 outlining consolidation plans.

Centers in Romeoville, Crete and Frankfort will likely fold into the new sheriff’s location, while the dispatch centers housed within the Joliet Police Department and new Wescom building in Plainfield – both of which account for more than half of all emergency calls received – would stay put.

“I was called promptly by Canadian National the following day or the same day the article came out and they said they are now expediting the process,” Persons said.

The village has long since completed its portion of work on the grade crossing. But it’s still not accessible because the part CN was required to complete has yet to pass the engineering phase.

The village also is seeing the effects of CN moving its hotbox wheel detector southeast from near Lockport Street to Renwick Road. The detector caused sometimes hourlong delays along many of the 17 grade crossings in the village at the same time.

Since the relocation, Plainfield has seen no train delays due to the hotbox issue, Police Chief John Konopek said.

“It appears the movement of the hotbox has solved the problem,” Konopek said.

Drones

One resident asked village officials about how use of drones, or unmanned aircraft often used as a hobby, is regulated in Plainfield.

Konopek said the police department is researching laws related to flying drones and the potential drones have in emergency response. Also, the village’s proximity to the Joliet Regional Airport, Lewis University Airport and other smaller airports already make much of Plainfield a no-drone zone.

Federal regulations prohibit flying drones within 5 miles of an airport unless first notifying the airport and control tower and getting permission to do so.

HELPING UNDOCUMENTED STUDENTS JJC students want to address scholarship access, awareness

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – When Brian Herrera came to Joliet Junior College, he felt alone and different from other students.

Unlike most students at the school, Herrera was an undocumented U.S. resident. He didn’t find out about his legal status until he was 16 because his parents wanted him to be safe and avoid his status affecting him.

When he came to JJC in 2012, he didn’t realize there was support and resources for undocumented students until he came to the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs.

Herrera said many undocumented students live in fear.

“They stay in the shadows

and in fear of deportation or being exploited because that’s what they grow up in,” he said.

Now Herrera, along with other students and JJC educators, want to make college life easier and more welcoming for undocumented students. Last fall, a new support group was established called Dreamers Advancing in Leadership and Education.

“It takes a lot of courage for students to say they are undocumented,” said Martha Villegas Miranda, JJC Latino outreach and retention specialist.

“If we know they are here, we can help them.”

“They are some of our best students on our campus. They want to use education as a catalyst to move from their current financial situation to a better one for themselves and their families,” Miranda said.

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The city is hoping to bring a brew pub to Union Station.

City staff is negotiating with an entrepreneurial group interested in converting about half of the first floor of the old train station into a brew pub that not only would make beer on-site but can it for retail sale, too.

It’s far from a done deal, but it is one with interesting potential, said Steve Jones, Joliet’s new economic development director.

The city initiated the idea of bringing a brew pub to Joliet when it sent out requests for proposals for a restaurant at the old Crabigale’s site downtown. The requests included a suggestion that a brew pub might work at the location.

“The tag line I used in trying to get a microbrewery in here is the fourth largest city in Illinois is Joliet, and it doesn’t have a microbrewery,” Jones said.

No active microbreweries responded. But one group interested in getting into the

business did. They, however, did not want the Crabigale’s site. Staff showed them around town, including a stop at Union Station, which was built in 1912, and an idea developed.

“They loved it,” Jones said.

“They just saw the iconic building, and how do you replicate that in your business plan? You can’t.”

Jones would not identify the interested party other that to say, “They’re enthusiastic, and they’re entrepreneurial.”

He also said they have financing. But they do not have experience running a restaurant and brew pub.

Two other businesses brought bars with restaurants into Union Station in past years. Both pulled out eventually.

Councilman Larry Hug, chairman of the Economic Development Committee, believes a brew pub would have more staying power because of its uniqueness.

“I think that microbreweries and brew pubs are destination businesses,” Hug said.

“It’s not like you can find a microbrewery in every neighborhood.”

Hug said the prospective operators do have a brew master and appear prepared to go into business.

“I think they did a lot of their due diligence before coming to Joliet. When they saw Union Station, they were excited,” he said.

Meanwhile, city staff also is talking with a business interested in putting a restaurant in the Crabigale’s site, located in the 1890 Loughran Building at Chicago and Cass streets.

Hug said that business does have a successful restaurant now and their plan for the site “is something we don’t have in the city right now.”

The city owns both buildings. Joliet owns two-thirds of Union Station with Metra owning another third, but the city has control of what goes into the building.

Union Station was closed in 2014 as the city began to relocate commuter boarding to the other side of the railroad tracks in preparation for a new train station yet to be built. Once the new station opens, Jones said, Joliet will have complete ownership of Union Station.

PLAINFIELD – The village of Plainfield is trying to organize an economic development showcase in late spring to advertise its business profile to commercial brokers.

Village Planner Jonathan Proulx told members of the village’s economic development task force Wednesday morning that plans are underway to host a spring development showcase at the Trolley Barn property – which is under renovation – sometime in May or June.

“It’s a way of promoting some opportunities that we have in Plainfield, highlight new construction opportunities,” Proulx said, noting that the village is planning a more active, friendly outreach effort.

The event would be invitation only and not open to the public. But it would give the village a chance to show off to commercial brokers.

“We tend to under-sell ourselves,” Village Administrator Brian Murphy said, adding that he was confident in the abilities of staff and local business owners to sell Plainfield as a good place for business.

The task force liked the idea and encouraged Proulx and Murphy to organize it for more discussion during the task force’s next meeting in April.

Trolley Barn update

Construction on the Trolley Barn property is going well, Proulx said. The glass walls have been installed and metalwork on the interior is moving along.

Murphy said the owner, Paul Wojcieszak, president of Chicago-based Sheffield Safety and Loss Control, has already completed $250,000 in additional work that the village hadn’t anticipated before the approval of a second facade grant.

Murphy announced that the village is officially closing on the sale of the old Baci’s and St. Mary’s church property in downtown Plainfield.

A group of local business owners – dentist Rhiannon Holcombe and Vince Congine from The Loose Tooth Pediatric Dentistry and Hopscotch and Vine and Blue restaurant owners Michael and Casey Vaughn – will take over the property Friday and hope to turn it into a family-oriented pizza restaurant.

Murphy also said Diageo, the alcoholic beverage manufacturer headquartered in Plainfield, bought a 250,000-square-foot warehouse on Route 30 just north of 143rd Street.

The property was previously owned by CenterPoint Properties, but Murphy said it has been vacant for years. “[Diageo] are only using it as a distribution facility at this point,” he said.

Joliet’s Pat McGuire proposes state grant reimbursement bill

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Joliet state lawmaker is seeking to reimburse colleges and universities that fronted $168 million to help students pay for classes last fall because their grant funding is tied up in state budget disputes.

State Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, filed Senate Bill 2226 on Wednesday, which would appropriate $168 million to the Illinois Student Assistance Commission from the General Revenue Fund for grant awards to students eligible for the Monetary Award Program.

The bill would cover money fronted by institutions for the fall semester.

The legislation represents the third attempt to provide state funding for MAP, McGuire said. House Bill 4146 proposed appropriations of about $397 million before Rauner vetoed it. Senate Bill 2043 had its second reading Nov. 10 in the House.

McGuire said Rauner has

shown his appreciation for preschool and K-12 education. “[This] will give him a chance to show his appreciation for post-secondary education,” he said.

MAP provides state grants to students in MAP-approved schools who demonstrate a financial need. The funds do not need to be repaid.

A recent survey from ISAC showed that out of 84 colleges and universities, 41 schools reported they would not carry the MAP load for students once more this spring, and about a dozen more haven’t decided.

During the fall semester, Joliet Junior College applied $553,000 toward MAP grant students, and it has applied $470,000 so far for the spring.

JJC spokeswoman Kelly Rohder said college officials are happy to hear the news of McGuire’s bill and thankful the Senate Higher Education Committee – which McGuire chairs – took testimonies during a hearing at JJC on MAP seriously.

“We think this is a definite

step in the right direction,” she said.

State Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, said she supports MAP grants, as it is important for students and families to afford college, but opposes the approach of approving legislation for funding.

“This piecemeal approach to paying our expenses is not healthy for local municipalities, for families – it’s not healthy for the state. That’s why it’s important we get a budget compromise,” she said.

State Rep. Margo McDermed, R-Mokena, had similar criticism of McGuire’s proposal.

She also said universities need to tighten their own belts before receiving state aid, citing a Wednesday memo from Rauner’s office that was critical of public university spending.

According to the memo, Illinois public universities raised tuition rates by more than 200 percent in the past 14 years and six of them employ eight lobbying firms to lobby the state.

After JJC student Samantha Ante, who is undocumented and emigrated from Mexico, graduated from Lockport Township High School in 2014, she took off what would have been her first fall semester in college to save money for tuition by working two jobs.

She said she gets mad when she sees her friends who are not undocumented receive scholarships and have better opportunities for education.

“We want to study, we want to make this country better, we want to contribute to this country,” she said.

Besides focusing on access to scholarships, DALE also plans to address the JJC Board of Trustees in February about the needs of undocumented students. Herrera said he also wants the support group to collaborate with Latino student group Latinos Unidos, which he previously led.

high school he thought he had few opportunities available to him. Realizing there are students like him – as well as support and resources – made him the person he is today, he said.

Since coming to JJC, he’s been president of Latinos Unidos and a JJC student trustee.

“When you go to a campus that supports you and is willing to help you, you feel like it becomes a part of your home,” he said.

Herrera said the issues affecting undocumented students have been more visible since the passage in 2012 of the federal program DACA – or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals – as it provides some undocumented youth relief from deportation.

Undocumented students are coming out of the shadows, Herrera said.

“They know there is a need to not sit there and stay silent.

You will make a difference if you take action instead of living in the shadows,” he said.

Goats, pets perish in rural Plainfield fire Fire causes total loss to home

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Three goats, two dogs and a cat died in a garage fire that left a Plainfield home uninhabitable Wednesday morning.

The Plainfield Fire Protection District received a call at 10:18 a.m. for a fire that broke out in the garage of a rural home on the 25400 block of Route 30, Deputy Fire Chief Jon Stratton said. The full still alarm was activated shortly afterward.

A battalion chief was a mile away when he saw the fire, Stratton said.

“An elderly woman ... was on the porch on all fours with smoke coming out of the door when he arrived,” Stratton said, adding that firefighters safely took the woman away from the home.

The woman, who wasn’t injured and refused medical

treatment, was the only person in the home when the fire started.

Stratton said the fire district, assisted by fire agencies from Troy, Bolingbrook, Bristol-Kendall, Lockport, Naperville and Oswego, had the fire under control within 30 minutes.

It would have been sooner, but the fire district had to bring tenders – trucks that carry water – to the scene because there were no fire hydrants in the rural area, Stratton said.

Stratton said a strong southwest wind blew the fire into the house. The garage collapsed and the house was a total loss of $200,000 to $250,000.

Stratton said an investigation revealed the fire started in the attached garage of the home, in which livestock such as goats, ducks and horses were being kept.

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A disturbance at a Joliet apartment Tuesday led police to find a man they say committed two armed robberies last week.

At 10:08 p.m., officers were called to the 400 block of North Bluff S t r e e t a n d Jacques D. found Jacques Harris D. Harris, 19, in the building, Joliet Deputy Chief Al Roechner said.

“We’d been seeking Mr. Harris in connection with armed robberies from Jan. 8 and took him into custody,” Roechner said.

At 4:55 p.m. Friday, a couple pulled into the parking lot of S and T Food Mart, 124 S. Richards St., and were approached by a man in a black jacket and Chicago Bulls knit hat, Roechner said.

“He asked the victims if they had change for a $20 bill,

About 3 p.m. Jan. 6, a woman was robbed at gunpoint while sitting on her porch near Union and Washington streets. Six hours later, a couple was held up while getting out of their car near First Avenue and Richards Street.

Harris was arrested in November 2013, after he and two other people were allegedly caught by Joliet police with a loaded gun in their car while smoking marijuana in the New Street commuter parking lot. The case was not prosecuted, according to Will County court records.

Police databases identify Harris as a known street gang member.

JOLIET – A fight in a casino, an argument in the bathroom of a bar and the victim’s acquittal in a previous slaying may be discussed when a Joliet man is tried next month on charges he killed a man in the middle of a crowded restau- Christopher rant.

Thompson Judge Daniel Rozak denied prosecutors’ motion Wednesday to redact some of Christopher Thompson’s interview with police conducted hours after Gerardo Franchini was killed Aug. 3, 2013.

State’s Attorney Adam Capelli said Thompson talks about a fistfight he and Franchini had outside Hollywood Casino and mentions he’d subsequently learned “on the street” Franchini had killed a woman.

“The state doesn’t have to show motive, but they want to [with the casino fight] ... so they can’t pick and choose,” defense attorney John Casey said. “It puts things in context. Christopher is aware [Franchini is] dangerous, he’s killed somebody. ... This is from the day of the shooting, not a legal defense we’re trying to put in now.”

Franchini, 29, was having breakfast with his wife and two young daughters at Louis’ Family Restaurant, 1001 W. Jefferson St., while Thompson and a woman were eating at another table before the two men

argued. Police said Thompson left and returned about 15 minutes later to shoot Franchini several times at point-blank range.

Franchini had been charged with murder in the January 2007 slaying of Brenda Greenwood. By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – With his trial date fast approaching, a Homer Glen lawyer-turned-defendant continues to bring up pretrial issues in his solicitation of murder case.

Robert W. Gold-Smith, 53, appeared Wednesday before Judge Daniel Rozak Robert W. to renew his Gold-Smith argument to be allowed to refer to felony convictions of the informants against him beyond those in the past 10 years.

Gold-Smith has been in jail since March 2011 for allegedly violating an order of protection filed by his then-wife in

November 2010. He reportedly began approaching other jail inmates to have his wife killed, including Brian McDaniel, who agreed to wear a wire for detectives. McDaniel has a rap sheet going back to the 1970s, but Rozak feels the eight felony convictions he’s received since 2005 will show enough of his character when the case is decided.

“Based on [McDaniel’s] history, it would’ve been appropriate to sentence him to 10 years, but he got a spectacular deal and received a year’s probation, which you will be able to [bring up],” Rozak told Gold-Smith.

Gold-Smith said he may need additional time to review the prosecution’s recent turnover of the other informants’ criminal history, but Rozak did not agree to postpone the

trial, which is scheduled to begin Tuesday.

“Now you’ve [confirmed] they’re all convicted criminals and the state will have to confront that. How are you [hindered]? If anything this has just improved your case,” the judge told the defendant.

Rozak agreed to issue an order to the Will County jail staff allowing Gold-Smith to bring throat lozenges he purchased in the commissary with him to court. GoldSmith also said being shackled makes it difficult to carry “two large accordion files” when he comes from jail.

“I will also sign an order that the jail staff is to ensure you can bring over any files you need,” Rozak said.

Gold-Smith is scheduled to return to court for another pretrial session Thursday.

Plainfield students scale wall for P.E.

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Students practiced their rock-climbing skills this week at Walker’s Grove Elementary School.

A special rock-climbing wall for Walker’s Grove students in kindergarten through fifth grades stood 20 to 22 feet high, depending on which side they climbed. The students were able to use it

this week during gym classes.

“The kids have to have some pretty good strength and some pretty good determination,” said Steve Riederer, the school’s physical education teacher.

Principal Jeffrey Schafermeyer said the rock-climbing wall is not something all schools do in Plainfield. This week is a special one for students to do some climbing, he said.

“It’s very well-received by the families in the community and the kids certainly appreciate it,” he said.

Riederer said this year is the fifth one for students to climb the wall. The school Parent Teacher Organization fully funds the wall every year, and Schafermeyer said it’s an example of how the community supports the wall.

During the week, the stu-

dents do double physical education classes at one – they can climb the wall for an hour and 10 minutes as well as use the wall during a 25-minute recess period.

Students can also climb for another 25-minute period if they teacher plans for one,

DOROTHY PAJER Dorothy “Dorth” Pajer (Nee Knippenberg), age 86, late of Homer Glen passed away peacefully Sunday, Jan. 10, 2016. Born in LaGrange, and a Homer Glen resident since 1957.

Dorothy was an avid bowler and was in a league sponsored by Custom Heating for many years. She loved to travel with her beloved husband, she especially enjoyed vacationing in Wisconsin and her many family fishing trips.

Pastors urge boycott of Emanuel’s MLK breakfast

CHICAGO – A group of Chicago ministers is calling for a boycott of Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s annual breakfast honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The ministers have been voicing their anger at Emanuel in the weeks since a video of a white police officer fatally shooting black teenager Laquan McDonald and on Wednesday they urged community leaders to join their boycott of Friday’s breakfast.

The Rev. Ira Acree says he does not want to provide “political cover” for a mayor who he says tried to keep the public from seeing the video that was ultimately ordered released by a judge.

Federal funds unclaimed by child welfare agency

CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services likely lost out on about $40 million in federal money in the last two years because it failed to process paperwork, acting director George Sheldon said.

Sheldon said the problem was due to paperwork and largely a consequence of having eight agency leaders in five years.

After a months-long bureaucratic effort to fix the lapses, Sheldon said $21.5 million in new federal funds flowed to the agency this fiscal year and $16.5 million is expected for the fiscal year that begins in July.

Officials say about 600 wards ages 18 to 21 were classified incorrectly as dependents, though many were living on their own.

That meant the agency got a little more than half of its entitled federal funds. The additional money can be used to serve all juvenile wards.

Getting those changes made required agency officials to get

court approval from juvenile court judges, and those discussions began in the summer.

Officials began filing paperwork changes in late August.

At least $14 million of the new federal funds will be used for a court-ordered overhaul of the agency. The newspaper found in 2014 that hundreds of juvenile wards were reportedly assaulted and raped annually at residential treatment centers.

KINCAID, Ill. – Congressman Rodney Davis is urging central Illinois residents impacted by recent flooding to seek help at a local emergency response center set up for that purpose.

Gov. Bruce Rauner declared disaster areas last week in 23 counties and the Republican congressman from Taylorville represents five of them. Those are Calhoun, Christian, Jersey, Madison and Sangamon.

Chicago withdraws objection to release shooting video

CHICAGO – The city of Chicago did an about-face Wednesday in asking a federal judge to lift a protective order to allow the public release of video that shows a white police officer fatally shooting a black suspect in a car theft in 2013.

It wasn’t clear when the city would release the footage of Cedrick Chatman’s death, but it could happen as early as Thursday, when a judge is likely to lift the protective order that had kept the video from the public.

The city’s law office declined to comment on the possible timing of any release of the video.

Questions surrounding the Chatman video follow the Nov. 24 release of video showing white officer Jason Van Dyke fatally shooting black teenager Laquan McDonald 16 times in 2014. The city fought the release of the McDonald video for more than a year, drawing

Interest in prison development as hiring continues

THOMSON, Ill. – Officials in a northwestern Illinois community say a federal prison’s hiring bump is coinciding with increased interest from real estate developers who want to know about available land.

Thomson Village President Vicky Trager tells WNIJ radio that inquiries about development are up. She says there’s also more traffic from new workers and their families.

The U.S. Bureau of Prisons says there are 237 positions filled at Thomson Correctional Center.

Another 13 positions have been selected and are expected to start work within a few months.

There are just over 100 minimum security inmates at the facility.

Stocks plunge as a dismal start to 2016 gets worse

By ALEX VEIGA The Associated Press The dismal start to 2016 on Wall Street got a lot worse Wednesday.

Stocks tumbled again on fears of a global slowdown and alarm over plummeting oil prices, officially sending the Standard & Poor’s 500 index into what’s known as a correction, or a drop of 10 percent or more from its peak.

The Dow Jones industrial average also slumped, losing more than 300 points.

The drop over the first eight trading days of 2016 represents the worst start to a year in the history of both the S&P 500 and the Dow. “At the very core of this, there’s a bull-bear debate,” said Quincy Krosby, market strategist at Prudential Financial. The question, she said, is whether the economy is strong enough to justify how high stock prices are.

The rocky start to the year reflects mounting worries on Wall Street about the slowdown in China, the world’s second-biggest economy; a plunge in oil prices to the lowest level in 12 years; and the implications for U.S. corporations, especially energy companies.

The S&P 500, which is the most closely watched gauge of the broader market and reached a record high in May, is now down 7.5 percent this year, while the Dow is off 7.3 percent.

The Nasdaq is deeper in the red, down 9.6 percent. The Russell 2000, which is made up of small-company stocks, is down 20 percent from its June peak. That big a plunge is defined as a bear market.

Energy and consumer stocks bore the brunt of the selling. The price of U.S. crude oil closed slightly higher, but remains near $30 a barrel, a level that investors

fear could force many oil and gas companies to go bankrupt.

Brent crude, the international standard, fell 2 percent.

Some of the biggest winners from last year, such as Netflix and Amazon, both of which doubled in value in 2015, also fell sharply.

All told, the Dow lost 364.81 points, or 2.2 percent, to 16,151.41. The S&P 500 fell 48.40 points, or 2.5 percent, to 1,890.28. It was the worst day for the index since Sept. 28.

The Nasdaq slid 159.85 points, or 3.4 percent, to 4,526.06.

Biotechnology stocks took a drubbing. The Nasdaq Biotechnology index lost 5.3 percent and is down 17.2 percent this year.

The market recorded its best day of the year on Tuesday and appeared to be headed for more gains early on Wednesday. But then a report showed that demand for fuels slipped last month.

To the Editor: In 2015, the Plainfield community once again showed its generous support of the Needy Family Drive. This was the 23rd year for this project, and our goal continues to be making the holiday season a little merrier for some unfortunate families of Plainfield School District 202.

We helped more than 33 families this year by providing an array of gifts for every family member and abundant food baskets. And, of course, we couldn’t have done it without the kind-hearted people of this community. We can honestly say that each family was overwhelmed with emotional gratitude, which left some speechless but just as many thanking us profusely.

The Plainfield Moose Lodge 2491 invited its members to donate to a toy drive and the Needy Family Drive was the grateful recipient of many of those donations. Four PHS-CC teachers – Darren Kobliska, Matthew Clark, Jonathan Pereiro and Patrick Hanley – challenged 20 of their classes to a donation drive. Together they raised $2,500 in cash donations and an additional $11,000 in clothing donations.

Additionally, for the third year, Mr. Clark designed and sold “ugly Christmas T-shirts” as a fundraiser and donated all proceeds.

To all the individuals who make it a part of their holiday tradition to send in donations, please know that we could not succeed without your continued support.

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The University of St. Francis men’s basketball team entered Wednesday’s Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference showdown with Olivet Nazarene University in an unusual position.

Ranked third in the latest NAIA Division II poll, the Fighting Saints trailed the No. 14 Tigers by two games for the South Division lead entering the contest.

But just as it’s done in its last three home games against quality NAIA opponents, USF used its depth to overcome some adversity as it captured an 80-71 victory at the Sullivan Center.

Ilya Ilyayev led the Saints (16-2, 8-2) with 22 points and six rebounds while Jens Kennedy added 21 points and Jo Jo Ball-

estero came off the bench to get 13 points and eight assists.

“I thought that the second half was one of our better halves of basketball, as far as focus and toughness were concerned,” USF coach Ryan Marks said. “Obviously, it’s a terrific Olivet team that’s particularly physical, so you just have great discipline and stickto-it-ive-ness to continue to guard them the way that they play offensively.

“I thought it was one of Jen’s best games. He had great poise when he got the ball because he was facing a physical defense that was doing a good job of making him play in traffic. “That was a great possession with great fight throughout,” Marks said. “There a loose ball, we chase it down and don’t get it and guys just kept playing until the horn went off. I was

charged up on that play and the bench was, too, because it reflects the type of team that we would like to be.”

But down the stretch, Kennedy started capitalizing on Tigers foul trouble and Ballestero hit six straight free throws to wrap up the victory.

“We have a veteran team and we’re all pretty close with one one another and have good chemistry,” Kennedy said. “So we all know how each other plays and we can face adversity. We all do a good job of complimenting one another and giving each other confidence.

“It was a great all-around win,” Ballestero said. “It’s too bad that a couple of our guys got injured, but they should be back soon. This shows our depth a lot since we stuck together as a team. Coach Marks instills a lot of confidence in us, and I have the green light coming in off of the bench and he has faith in me to make the right decisions. It’s really good to have that from your coach since it helps you to come in with a lot of confidence.”

“I just try to do whatever I have to do for my team to get the win,” Reed said.

“Obviously tonight, it wasn’t

enough. When you look at the scoreboard, 32 points, what else did I do? I don’t even know if I rebounded well. The point is, it wasn’t enough. I wish I could’ve done more, put a lot more together to get the ‘W.’ ” Other players also put their hearts out on the court.

Angelica Osusky hustled throughout to get open and Jordan Giddings played tough on the boards. Giddings delivered 13 points, six rebounds, six assists and a block and Osusky had seven points and four rebounds.

National rankings: After defeating top-ranked Saint Xavier on Saturday, USF’s women’s team moved up from seventh

to a tie for second with SXU in the latest NAIA Division II rankings. The Saints men’s team dropped a spot to third after suffering their second loss.

The Lewis women’s basketball team moved up one spot and are now ranked eighth in the latest NCAA Division II poll.

And the Flyers men’s volleyball team dropped a spot and are now ranked ninth in the AVCA Division I-II poll after falling to No. 5 Hawaii on Sunday.

This week’s spotlight: The Flyers women’s and men’s basketball teams travel to St. Louis for Great Lakes Valley Conference games against Maryville today and against Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday.

JOLIET – University of St. Francis junior Charnelle Reed has been named the NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball National Player of the Week.

Reed posted double-doubles in a pair of USF victories against nationally ranked opponents last week as No. 7 USF defeated No. 16 Purdue University Calumet and top-ranked Saint Xavier University.

She scored 25 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and handed out four assists in the Saints’ 76-60 decision over Purdue Calumet last Tuesday, before finishing with 26 points and 10 boards as USF defeated previously unbeaten and No. 1-ranked Saint Xavier, 73-61, on Saturday evening. In between those two contests, she tallied six points and four boards in limited time (13 minutes) in the Saints’ 86-39 win over Calumet College of St. Joseph.

For the week, Reed averaged 19 points and 8.3 rebounds while shooting 52.1 percent from the field (25 of 48) in the three contests. On the season, she ranks 13th in NAIA DII with seven double-doubles and stands 17th in scoring average (18.3 ppg).

Not surprisingly, she was also named as the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the seven-day period ending Jan. 10.

Fejedelem, Morrison pull pleasant surprises VIEWS Dick Goss Of this and that: We’re almost ready to put the college football season to bed. Remaining are the postseason all-star games as college seniors try to impress NFL scouts on the field one last time.

Two Joliet area products are in unlikely situations, in a good way.

First, there’s Illinois safety Clayton Fejedelem, a Lemont graduate. He transferred to Illinois and walked on after two award-winning seasons on the NAIA level, playing for coach Mike Feminis at Saint Xavier.

All he did as a senior was record 140 tackles to lead the Big Ten, 23 more than the runner-up. He finished fifth in the nation in tackles per game (11.7) and was ninth in the nation and second in the Big Ten in solo tackles per game (6.2). He made dou-

ble-digit tackles in five of his last six games and made at least seven solo stops in five of his last six games.

Fejedelem was a second-team All-Big Ten selection. He has been invited to play in the East-West Shrine Game on Jan. 23 at Tropicana Field in Tampa, Fla. Feminis and I have talked on occasion about how there are kids in this area who can play on the Division I level but do not get the opportunity because their measurables perhaps are not quite what the large schools want. Fejedelem is a prime example.

Meanwhile, his Illinois teammate, running back Josh Ferguson (Joliet Catholic), a third-team All-Big Ten pick, also will be in the East-West Shrine Game.

Ferguson is listed on the East roster and Fejedelem is on the West, so the two Illini may get an opportunity to face each other.

The second area graduate in an unlikely situation is Florida senior inside linebacker Antonio Morrison

(Bolingbrook), a second-team All-SEC selection for a second straight year.

The former Herald-News Defensive Player of the Year was a big-time recruit from the get-go and spent his entire college career at Florida. However, he suffered a severe knee injury in a bowl game in early January, 2015 and surprised medical personnel with how hard he worked and how quickly he got his knee to the point where he could play this entire season.

Not only did he play, he made more than 100 tackles for a second straight year and had 12 tackles for loss.

As with Ferguson, some services have ranked him among the top 10 at his position entering the NFL Draft.

OUR TOURNAMENT?

The IHSA board of directors voted this week to open state final hosting bids in three sports, including Class 3A/4A baseball, which has been housed at Silver Cross Field since 2006.

The other sports involved are competitive dance and Class 1A boys soccer.

“We have enjoyed great experiences at each of these venues, and in these communities, and are by no means looking to leave,” IHSA executive director-elect Craig Anderson said in a news release. “However, our board felt it was prudent to evaluate each of these host situations and explore any other host interest that may exist in an effort to provide our schools, student-athletes, coaches and fans with the best state final experience possible.”

So, stay tuned.

HOLDING COURT

• With Providence Catholic’s boys basketball team struggling to win consistently, the strides being made

by Celtics junior guard Jake Schutter easily can be overlooked. But he is the team’s scoring leader and is showing the ability to shoot the 3 and create shots inside the arc.

“Jake is getting better and better,” Celtics coach Tim Trendel said after last Saturday’s game, when Providence battled Joliet Catholic to the closing minutes before dropping a 51-43 decision.

“He is only a junior, but he’s playing like a senior now.”

• Regardless of how and where things go from here for the University of St. Francis women’s and men’s basketball teams, 2015-2016 will be a special season in the Saints’ history.

More than halfway through the regular season, the USF women entered Wednesday night’s game against Olivet Nazarene ranked No. 2 in the nation in NAIA Division II and the USF men were ranked No. 3 entering their game against Olivet.

To say the head coaches of the two programs, Samantha Quigley and Ryan Marks, have done an outstanding job is quite an understatement.

The IHSA staff selected the Illinois coaches of the year in their respective sports based on results of the 2014-15 school year as well as other elements such as career success, sportsmanship and contributions to the sport.

State coaches of the year then complete further information for the NFHS, which a national committee reviews before selecting eight section winners in each sport and one

national winner in each sport.

Glenbrook South boys tennis coach Larry Faulkner was named national coach of the year.

He is the 15th coach in Illinois history to win national coach of the year and the first in boys tennis.

All-Star captain Scott demoted by Coyotes

GLENDALE, Ariz. – An NHL AllStar captain has been demoted.

Arizona Coyotes tough guy John Scott, voted as one of four captains for the NHL All-Star game, was sent to Springfield of the AHL on Wednesday after clearing waivers earlier this season.

The Coyotes sent Scott down to make room on their roster for defenseman Kevin Connauton, who was claimed off waivers from the Blue Jackets.

Arizona coach Dave Tippett said Scott will likely be back with the Coyotes in the next couple of days, allowing him to participate in the Jan. 31 AllStar game in Nashville.

Scott was the one player who stuck out on the list, a 6-foot-8, 270-pound enforcer who’s one of the game’s last heavyweight fighters

Furthering the ‘charism of community’ in Christ New Lenox couple named to Augustinian Advancement Advisory Council Know more

The Utters first experienced this spirituality in 2005 when they joined the Catholic Community of St. Jude in New Lenox, which is served by Augustinian clergy. Their children, Kelsey, Ryan and Maddie Utter, graduated from Providence Catholic High School in New Lenox, also served by Augustinians.

Kelsey, Denise Utter said, graduated from Villanova University, an Augustinian college in Pennsylvania. Ryan even found a connection with the Augustinians at West Point, where he attends school.

“His first chaplain was an Augustinian priest,” Denise Utter said Now the Utters are furthering the Augustinian mission as new members of the Augustinian Advancement Advisory Council.

“They are a mendicant order so they have to support themselves by asking for money,” Denise Utter said. “We look for support from people that have been influenced by the Augustinians, whether they were parishioners, students at one of the Augustinian schools or someone who received spiritual direction from them.”

Robert Utter added, “Anything we can do to help that along – we’re more than happy to join forces with them and help them do that.”

Beginnings

Although the Utters were previously active at another Catholic church, when they bought a home 17 houses down from their old one, they discovered most of the neighborhood belonged to St. Jude.

Robert said they discovered that the Augustinian’s unique “charism of community” filled the entire parish, its 70-plus ministries and fellow church members.

“It was hard to leave Mass without talking to 10 or 15 people,” Robert Utter said, “or not having to go to a meeting or gathering after Mass or during the week.”

As a couple, Robert and Denise Utter attended mission trips with the parish youth to serve the poor at different locations in the United States.

“This was one of the things that strengthened my faith quite a bit,” Robert Utter said, “where you walk the walk, so to speak, taking care of others

– really, what I’ve seen our priests do so well.”

Robert Utter said he also became a Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults sponsor to help guide others into the Catholic faith. In 2007, the Rev. Don Lewandowski hired Denise Utter as director of parish faith formation after she approached him about possibly teaching.

“It was the best hire I ever made,” Lewandowski said.

Stepping up the service

Denise Utter, Lewandowski said, redeveloped and refined the church’s Generations of Faith program, which includes parents in the religious formation process of their children. She attends conferences and invites outside speakers as guests for various events.

In 2014, according to a news release from the Midwest Augustinians, Denise

Utter and Lewandowski won the New Wineskin Award from the National Conference of Catechetical Leaders for Explore 4, part of the parish’s faith formation program.

Denise Utter wrote about the experience in Catechetical Leaders magazine.

As volunteers, the Utters help wherever they can – even putting up and taking down holiday decorations, Lewandowski said. They’re dependable and keep their word, he added.

“They have really stepped up on every level,” Lewandowski said. “I can’t praise them enough.”

Denise Utter said she has grown in many ways through working with Lewandowski.

She’s learned to lead, speak in front of large groups, guide families into a closer walk in Christ and listen – really listen – to others.

In an email, Denise Utter summed up her feelings about the Augustinians, based on a quote from St. Augustine: “Our hearts are restless until they rest in thee, O Lord.”

“I think this speaks to the spirituality of all of us – searching, seeking, something,” Denise said in the email. “We are restless. At St. Jude, we hope that restlessness leads us to turn to God.”

The grand aim of all bridge players is to find the winning line after drawing logical deductions from the auction – both bids and passes – and cards played. This deal is a good example.

It occurred during a junior match between the Czech Republic and England.

South was in four hearts after West had pre-empted in spades. West led the diamond seven to East’s jack and declarer’s ace. How did declarer analyze the play?

West drew in one notch (not bidding three spades) because he had a relatively weak suit and was vulnerable – but that was uncharacteristically cautious for a junior.

Frederick Illingworth (South) was threatened with five losers: three clubs and two hearts. The first problem was in the trump suit.

Typically, a pre-emptive overcall suggests shortness in the opener’s suit, but in this case, declarer felt that if West had been short in hearts, he would have considered sacrificing in four spades; instead, he had passed in tempo over four hearts.

So, South played a heart to the king and ace, won the next diamond in his hand, and cashed the heart queen.

Then he took his spade ace, played a diamond to the queen, ruffed the spade queen in his hand, discarded a club on the diamond 10, and led a trump to dummy. Illingworth completed a well-played deal by leading dummy’s club jack.

As the cards lay, the defenders could not take three tricks in the suit.

He or she then will rub a wand-like instrument over the area to transmit the ultrasonic waves.

• Diathermy uses electromagnetic waves to deliver heat deep into the tissues. Diathermy should not be used on actively inflamed joints.

• Paraffin bath . In this technique, you dip your hands or feet into wax melted in an electric appliance that maintains a safe temperature.

After the wax hardens, the therapist wraps the treated area in a plastic sheet and blanket to retain the heat. Treatments generally take about 20 minutes, after which the wax is peeled off. Paraffin bath kits also are available for home use.

Dear Dr. K : Is heat therapy an effective treatment for rheumatoid arthritis?

Dear Reader : Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a long-lasting inflammatory disease that causes pain, stiffness, warmth, redness and swelling in joints.

Over time, the affected joints may become misshapen, misaligned and damaged.

For many people with RA, drug treatment slows down the damaging effects of the disease.

But non-drug treatments – including heat therapy – play an important role in pain relief, improved range of motion and enhanced strength.

Heat helps by reducing pain and relaxing muscles. You can try some heat-related techniques at home: • Warm bath or shower . Soaking for 15 to 20 minutes in a warm bath exposes the body to warmth and allows the weight-bearing muscles to relax.

A warm shower also can help reduce stiffness. Dress warmly after a shower or bath to prolong the benefit.

• A heating pad is another good idea, but keep in mind moist heat penetrates more deeply.

You can buy hot packs and moist/dry heating pads.

Or create a homemade hot pack by heating a damp folded towel in a microwave oven for 20 to 60 seconds, or in an oven set to 300 degrees F for five to 10 minutes. To prevent burns, test the heated towel on the inside of your arm before applying to a joint: It should feel comfortably warm, not hot.

Heat-based treatments also are a standard part of physical therapy: • Ultrasound produces heat in deep body tissues. Physical therapists may use it to reduce

Dear Abby: I moved overseas for work when I was 18. My father divorced my mom around the same time. I used to come back to the U.S. for two weeks every year to visit and stay with Mom. However, for the past eight years she has sent me emails “suggesting” in a roundabout way I was not totally welcome. Because of this, I haven’t been back in six years.

For the past 20-plus years I have given my mother about $7,000. Because I’m not welcome in her home, I told her I won’t give her any more.

She now is showing regret for her previous emails, but for me it’s too late. Since I’m no longer sending money, she will have to sell her condo.

She’s getting old and doesn’t have much time left, and I can’t wait until she passes on.

I despise her. For me it is unacceptable for a mother to not welcome her son into her home for two weeks a year.
