New year, new hopes

Applying lessons learned from the past in 2016 VIEWS Kate Schott As the calendar flipped from 2015 to 2016 on Friday, there was, as always, a sense of faith.

I’ve never thought of a new year as a clean slate, because that implies all problems or issues of the previous 365 days are forgotten and meant nothing.

I subscribe to the notion that past defeats are not weaknesses or failures – if we use them to not repeat the mistakes that led to us categorizing them as such in the first place.

But I have always thought a new year holds the promise of hope – that the struggles of the past happened for a reason and this is the year I will apply the lessons learned from each one to create the life I’ve wanted to live. I’ve had varying levels of success at accomplishing that but ... there’s always the faith and hope this is the year it happens.

So as the new year begins, here are my hopes for 2016 for my life: • I continue to focus on getting healthier. For too long, I’ve slept in when I could have gotten up to work out, and said (almost daily) that indulgence of various foods (mainly various forms of chocolate) is OK every now and then.

That’s led to some preventable health issues (not to mention not always liking what I see reflected back in pictures or the mirror).

I lost 20 pounds last year, and it felt good; I’m sure it

will feel even better to lose another 20. And I might learn what it’s like to truly enjoy an indulgence when it is just that.

• Find a volunteer opportunity. I’ve constantly told myself that my work schedule is too unpredictable to commit to giving time. But I’ve also observed others who have just as crazy a schedule as I do and they seem to make it work. I’ve determined it just needs to be a priority, and it’s my goal to do so this year.

• This last one is more of a mindset: It’s to be grateful for what I have and not focus as much on what I want. It seems like it should be easy to do, but as I’ve thought about what I would like to change about myself, this is one I struggle with. Whether its a nicer house or a solid relationship, it’s hard to not be envious at times.

But I have many wonderful elements to my life and it’s time to appreciate that.

Looking over these, they seem to be typical resolutions. But like all New Year’s resolutions, they take dedication to accomplish. Here’s hoping I’ve got that determination to succeed.

Happy new year to our readers – I hope your own 2016 has gotten off to a great start.

Lockport, New Lenox mothers welcome first babies of the New Year

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Brooke Billingsley and her boyfriend Ryan Bute were enjoying a quiet dinner together on New Year’s Eve when Billingsley – a 21-year-old from Wilmington nearing full-term pregnancy – felt her water break.

“At first, he didn’t believe that my water broke,” Billingsley said.

Hours later, Bute and Billingsley welcomed the couple’s first child together – and the first baby to be born in Joliet in 2016 – at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center.

Elleigh Renae Bute, weighing in at 6 pounds and 12 ounces and 19 inches long, was born at 5:53 a.m. Friday. The labor didn’t take long at all, Billingsley said.

Elleigh Renae wasn’t set to arrive until Jan. 21, but the mother-to-be said she made some attempts in the past few days and weeks to speed up the due date.

“I was saying to everyone ‘I want this baby to come,’ ” Bill-

ingsley told her family Friday in the hospital room. “I was ready. I tried dance moves, yoga, lunges, trying to get her to come out. And she listened.”

Elleigh Renae’s baby room is almost completely decorated, Billingsley said.

To congratulate the happy couple on having the first baby of 2016, Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center provided them with a baby gift basket – filled with toys and other items – that were donated by the Babies R Us in Joliet.

‘It’s kind of neat’

Lily Grace Kustra – weighing in at 7 pounds and 2 ounces and 19½ inches long – was born at 4:35 a.m. to Rebecca Kustra, 24, of Lockport, at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox.

Rebecca Kustra said she started having contractions on New Year’s Eve so she tried to take a nap. Instead, she ended up at Silver Cross less than an hour before midnight, her baby girl ready to ring in the new year.

This is Rebecca Kustra’s

third child. She wasn’t due until Jan. 4, she said. Even then, her doctor recently suggested she would have a late pregnancy – so having a New Year’s baby was a pleasant surprise.

“My daughter, she’s four [years old], she’s excited,” Rebecca Kustra said. “I think [my son] will be excited too. I think he likes being a big brother.”

Silver Cross’ OB/GYN unit provided Rebecca Kustra with a baby gift basket for having the first baby of 2016. Tracy Simons, spokeswoman for Silver Cross, said Childerguild– the hospital’s auxiliary that supports women’s and children’s services at Silver Cross Hospital – also planned to provide presents to Rebecca Kustra and her newborn.

The first newborn of 2016 in Will County was Nyheir Irie Stroud, weighing in at 5 pounds and 15 ounces and 19 inches long.

Nyheir was born at 4:16 a.m. at AMITA Health Adventist Medical Center in Bolingbrook to parents Ebony Carter and Steve Stroud, according to a news release.

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Odds are that your New Year’s resolution has something to do with staying healthy or losing weight.

The results of those resolutions can be seen in the gyms and fitness centers across Will County after Christmas.

“It’s very crowded today,” Inwood Athletic Club personal trainer Julie Ftacek said Thursday morning. “You see many new faces.”

Last year, 37 percent of Americans polled by Nielsen said their resolution was to

stay fit and healthy. That was closely followed by “losing weight,” at 32 percent.

Inwood and the Joliet Area YMCA are among the health clubs that have geared programming and events toward the new year.

Steps to success

The foremost part of fulfilling the New Year’s fitness goal is to make sure you’re ready to make a change, said Joliet Park District Fitness Superintendent Gina Rodriguez.

“You have to absolutely make up your mind that you want to do something good for

yourself,” she said.

The next step is to come up with a plan, Rodriguez said.

That plan could involve joining a fitness class at a gym, signing up with a personal trainer or creating a diet that could help cut the weight.

Aside from losing pounds, a good exercise regimen could help on the job as well, Joliet resident Jane Hopkins said.

Hopkins has been taking personal training sessions from Ftacek since June and has noticed a physical change and some weight loss.

Ftacek helps Hopkins work out three muscle groups per

session, focusing on strength, flexibility and endurance.

“It wasn’t an ‘Oh my God, I need to lose this amount in three months’ thing,” Hopkins said.

Hopkins she started the sessions after she noticed she was getting winded walking up and down stairs as a real estate agent, she said.

“My goals were better fitness and feeling good,” Hopkins said.

A mixture of different fitness classes also helps people find a place to start on their fitness journey, Rodriguez said.

Joliet resident Sue O’Con-

nell always has been an active person, but she uses the group fitness class at Inwood to fight the aging process.

“I would encourage people to just get out there to a class,” O’Connell said. “New people can find [direction] and help.”

The athletic club also is continuing its third annual “Lose a Ton” weight loss challenge, in which Joliet area residents are tasked to collectively lose 2,000 pounds, the equivalent of 1 ton.

It’s free to participate, with residents weighing in Jan. 18

and 19, and weighing out six weeks later.

Rodriguez said the Joliet community completed the challenge in 2013, but was 7 pounds short of the goal last year.

“It’s about motivating the community,” she said. “We have some who have lost more than 20 pounds, some just lose a pound or 2.”

The YMCA is offering a January sale membership eliminating the up to $120 joiner’s fee. That membership includes access to perks such as unlimited use during open hours, lower program rates, free fitness classes and childcare services.

“It kind of becomes a habit,” Krause said. “You become used to counting calories or watching your weight.”

Plainfield resident Elaine Echeverria lost 6 pounds over the course of the program going to swimming and enhanced fitness classes.

“I enjoyed it and the classes motivated me,” Echeverria said.

Ring in the new year with more than 200 new Illinois laws

By KEVIN P. CRAVER kcraver@shawmedia.com Illinois lawmakers have never let items such as the lack of a state budget or a $110 billion unfunded pension liability get in the way of passing a battery of new laws, and 2015 was no exception.

More than 200 new laws took effect Friday. Some are meant to keep us safe, others appear well-intentioned, and some appear silly – at least in the context of debating whether pumpkin pie should be the official state pie of Illinois rather than working on the state’s deep financial problems.

The following is a small list of new legislation, from the significant to the seemingly ridiculous.

Divorce

State lawmakers last year rewrote Illinois divorce law in its largest overhaul in 20 years.

In one major change under Senate Bill 57, all divorce filings will be no-fault, meaning parties will no longer be able to file for divorce based on fault-based grounds, such as adultery, desertion or cruelty. Under the new law, parties seeking divorce must show that irreconcilable differences resulted in an irretrievable breakdown of the marriage.

Another major change rewrites child custody and visitation, which is now called “allocation of parental responsibilities.” Rather than focus on where children live and the time spent with each parent, the law now specifically allocates parental responsibilities based on factors such as children’s health, education, travel distance and special needs.

Underage drinking/911

Underage drinkers who call 911 to get medical help for those who have had too much to drink will have immunity from a citation under House Bill 1336. The law, which is in place in more than 20 other states, is similar to one enacted several years ago for drug overdoses.

Capital, transportation projects on tap for Will County in 2016

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Getting plans for a new Will County courthouse and sheriff’s facility off the ground is the No. 1 priority for county government in 2016, followed by continued efforts to tackle transportation issues Don Moran head on.

“We have to build a new sheriff’s facility, a new courthouse. We have to get a new

case management system [for the public defender and state’s attorney’s office]. Our radio system is obsolete,” Moran said. “We have things we have to get done and all of those are moving forward.”

Will County Board Finance Committee Chairman Mike Fricilone, R-Homer Glen, said he hopes to have a “shovel in the ground” for the new sheriff’s facility on Laraway Road “within the next six months.”

In the meantime, additional design work should begin in early 2016 on a new courthouse.

Funding issues

Even as the county’s capital projects move forward, Republicans and Democrats on the Will County Board have yet to reach an agreement on how to fund them.

Under the proposed plan, officials would issue staggered bonds through 2047 to pay for a Laraway Road sheriff’s facility, a county courthouse in Joliet and a health department building, all of which are inefficient and aging in their current state.

Grundy County priorities for 2016

MORRIS – Grundy County officials look forward to economic growth as they move into 2016.

“The economy is getting better, we need to take advantage of the growth and healing and work on economic development within the county,” said Doug Pryor, county administrator. “We need to support the existing industry and work on developing more.”

David Welter, County Board chairman, said that after losing a considerable amount of income when point of sale offices closed in Channahon, the county was forced to look at what it had and how to grow moving forward.

“We have one of the most energy-intensive corridors right here in Grundy County,” Welter said. “They offer good paying jobs, they are good taxpayers and are good partners with the communities.”

He said looking at the history of Grundy County can help map out the future.

“We are the home of the first privately owned nuclear power plant in the country. I hope Grundy County can be home to more firsts, more innovation,” Welter said.

Pryor said Grundy County is unique in that it offers access to road, rail, river and air.

“When you look at what

we have access to, we have two major highways that go through Grundy County, we have a river, solid rail and an airport here in Morris to service industry,” he said.

Pryor said enterprise zones that were awarded in 2015 also are beneficial to the county.

A portion of Grundy County is in the Ottawa Enterprise Zone, Diamond received a new enterprise zone, and a portion of the Joliet Arsenal zone comes into Grundy County.

Add to that the recent partnership with Livingston County to include a portion of Grundy County at the intersection of Interstate 55 and Route 47 into its proposed 2016 zone, and the county is in a good position to offer incentives to industry wishing to move to the area.

In addition to economic growth, the county is taking steps within its technology infrastructure to make things run smoother and add a layer of transparency for taxpayers.

“The new technology we’ve been working on for the past two years is coming to a head in 2016,” Welter said. “We’ve had several group discussions with our department heads to find what works best for us.”

Pryor said he’s excited for some of the software that will be implemented going forward, including accounting software in Grundy County Treasurer Lori Werden’s office.

10 Recent rains aggravate

Troy Township farmer’s flooding feud with Joliet

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – One issue that went unresolved in 2015 was Troy Township farmer William Kobe’s complaint that city drainage is flooding his property.

Kobe’s expansive front yard along Black Road was converted to what looked like a large frozen pond last week after days of rain and melting snow followed by freezing temperatures.

Kobe, neighboring farmer Bob Fitzer and attorney Richard Kavanagh were at a Joliet City Council Public Service Committee meeting in October to urge a solution to the problem. Some possibilities were suggested. Nothing definite was resolved.

“Now it’s worse,” Kobe said Wednesday at his home, looking at the water and ice that covered most of the yard from his house to Black Road. “Of course, it’s raining more, too.

But it won’t go away.”

His yard was not the only area along the stretch of Black Road between Route 59 and County Line Road that was flooded that day. Several yards and fields in the area had ponds of water or ice in the front yards. Warning signs were posted at two spots to caution motorists of water that was running from the fields onto Black Road.

Kobe traces the flooding that occurs on his property to a drainage line that runs to a detention pond about a mile away in the back of the Kearney Glen subdivision, which was built about 10 years ago.

He contends the city drain-

age system serving Kearney Glen was improperly built so that rainwater runs to his property rather than to a ditch behind the detention pond. He paid $1,500 for an engineering survey, which, Kobe said, backs him up.

City officials don’t agree, and there is no sign of a resolution.

“In our opinion, there was relief provided,” Joliet Utilities Director James Eggen said, referring to past efforts by the city to satisfy Kobe’s concerns.

Kobe, in turn, said that at times the city has made matters worse. There is little if any agreement between the two sides.

Eggen said the city has old photographs “that show there was flooding in the field before there was any development out there.”

Kobe said he has farmed in the area since 1955, and he never had the problems he has now. Both Kobe and Fitzer told the committee in October that flooding in their fields has damaged crops since Kearney Glen was built.

Kearney Glen is one of a few subdivisions built in the last housing boom along the stretch of Black Road that also includes sections of the village of Shorewood and areas that are unincorporated. There still are many farm fields in the area as well.

Kobe said his dispute with the city has reached the point that no one will return his phone calls.

City Attorney Marty Shanahan said staffers may be reluctant to talk since Kobe has hired an attorney.

Organizers looking for projects for MLK Jr. Day of Service

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Organizers for the 2016 Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service are looking for more projects and volunteers.

“Now is really the window we need our largest number of projects,” co-organizer R. Dale Evans said. “We’re trying to get to 50 projects with a goal of 1,000 volunteers.”

The day of service, called “Day On, Not A Day Off,” is a collaborative community volunteer day of service when dozens of projects, such as painting a fence or cleaning a homeless shelter, are completed on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Last year’s day of service saw 689 volunteers help complete 28 community service projects, Evans said.

This year, the event will take place Jan. 18.

“Joliet is one of the many communities throughout the country that commit on that day,” Evans said. “We follow the theme of MLK and what he was like. We’re following that model again throughout the community.”

The United Way of Will County is handling organization of projects for the event.

United Way Executive Director Michael Hennessy said any agency with a project can contact him at mike@uwwill.org, and he will email back a project request form to complete.

Project requesters will need to provide the name of the organization, a contact person and a brief project description.

Each project should accommodate seven to 10 volunteers between 9 a.m. and noon on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Barber retires after more than 40 years

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Bill Alberico gave his last haircut to his last customer Thursday.

That customer was also his first – his uncle.

Rich Pera, 80, sat in the same chair inside Alberico’s Barbershop where Alberico, 66, gave his uncle Alberico’s first haircut back in 1972.

Alberico wanted his uncle to be his last customer before he closed up shop and retired.

“This is the place. Forty-three years in this place,” said Alberico of his barbershop on Raynor Avenue.

The walls and ceiling of the small Joliet barbershop have wood paneling. The shop holds a single chair where customers and generations of Alberico’s family have sat to receive their haircuts.

Alberico said he feels now is the time to retire, but leaving the business for good will be bittersweet. He’s close with his customers, many of whom have been with him for about 40 years.

“I’m happy I’m going to retire but I’m going to miss those guys because they’ve been like a family to me. You know all about them and their families,” he said.

“You almost have to be like a mind reader to figure out what they want,” he said.

Alberico said when he was in his early teens and getting his haircuts, it seemed to him like a nice job where he would be around people.

When he turned 17, he went to barber college in Aurora. He then worked for a barbershop on Collins Street for about five years before deciding to run his own barbershop. His uncle, Pera, was his first customer.

Pera received a trim from his nephew before Alberico retired. Alberico’s family joined him as he gave the haircut.

“Just don’t get nervous and cut it all off,” Pera joked to Alberico.

“Now he’s complaining,” Alberico said with a laugh.

“All these years, he never said anything.”

Alberico said he meets interesting people as a barber.

He’s also had his own goals for the business, such as wanting to cut the hair of a customer who was 100 years old, which he did in April.

Alberico’s career has been marked by fun times with customers, but also sad times. He said it’s been heartbreaking to see customers – who’ve grown older over the years – come in for their haircuts and die a week later.

“It gets harder and harder,” he said.

A lot of his customers have told him they’re going to miss him and that it won’t be the same. He said it’s a good feeling when customers say that to him.

Dawn Dupree, his daughter, said she’s proud of him.

She said she and her siblings brought their children to receive their first haircuts from Alberico.

“Who sticks with their job for as long as he does? You don’t see that anymore … He’s done this all his life and he’s made a lot of good friends and a lot of memories,” she said.

Alberico said he first walked into the shop with his tools and he’s leaving the same way.

“My final words will be, ‘Thanks for the memories,’ and that’s something I’ll always have,” he said.

Jackie Kinney MorningStar Mission business manager Catholic Charities went through a desperate period in the early fall that same year when it ran low on food, with the shelves almost empty.

The demand for food assistance has increased over the years.

Unemployment and poverty rates have remained high since the economic downturn in 2008, and the number of households receiving federal food assistance has increased by about 50 percent between 2009 and 2013, according to a 2014 report from Feeding America, a national nonprofit.

Feeding America partners with 200 food banks and 60,000 food pantries and meal programs nationwide.

Government studies have documented increases in the number of people receiving help from food pantries and emergency meal programs from 2010 to 2012, according to the report.

JOLIET – Food pantries tend to receive the most donations during the holidays, but they’re always in need of more when the season is over.

The holidays is the biggest time of the year for donations for MorningStar Mission, said Jackie Kinney, business manager for the Joliet nonprofit.

When the holidays are over, there are certain items the organization is low on, such as fresh vegetables and meat, she said. MorningStar Mission also tends to be low on perishable items such as milk and eggs.

During Thanksgiving and Christmas, the nonprofit gives out a lot of food to families, she said.

“I know a lot of people tend to not think of those basic needs when the weather is nice and it’s all sunny and warm, but we are still serving hundreds and hundreds of people a day,” Kinney said.

Donations to nonprofit agencies tend to be sluggish in months outside of November and December. Nonprofit agencies will campaign in the late summer to gather donations and coordinate volunteers for the holidays.

Kathleen Langdon, Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Joliet development and communications director, said in 2014 that the holiday season is traditionally a time for people to reflect on those who are needy.

Elevated manhole cover on Jackson St. bridge in Joliet causes traffic crash

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A driver hit an elevated manhole cover near the Jackson Street Bridge Thursday before losing control of his vehicle and crashing into a utility pole.

The incident caused the bridge to be out of service most of the day – or until just before 4 p.m. – while the city’s public

works department conducted emergency repair work, Joliet Deputy Police Chief Edgar Gregory said Saturday.

The incident happened about 6:45 a.m. Thursday.

Significant damage to the drainage system was discovered when the city’s street department arrived and examined the manhole cover, he said.

“What had happened is

that the cold and the water had pushed the cover up as it swelled,” Gregory said. “We were told that they had bricks instead of the type of cement they’re supposed to use ... so they had to excavate all the bricks there and drain the water.”

The 26-year-old driver from Joliet was not injured but he was arrested for driving with a suspended license, he said.

Joliet man arrested for resisting arrest, punching a man at McDonald’s restaurant

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET — A 31-year-old Joliet man was arrested last week for punching another man in the face inside the McDonald’s at 508 E. Cass St. in Joliet.

Joshua J. Medina was arrested about 8:48 a.m. Thursday

on charges of battery and resisting arrest, said Joliet Deputy Police Chief Edgar Gregory.

The victim – a 48-year-old man – told police he was sitting at a table when Medina allegedly approached him and “punched him for no apparent reason,” Gregory said. The 48-year-old – who suffered a

small cut to his lip and nose – told police he then took Medina “to the ground” to defend himself, according to police reports.

When officers attempted to put Medina under arrest, Medina arrested so he had to be taken to the ground by officers.

Animals seized from home, looking into potential dog fighting

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Twelve dogs – six dead and six alive – were found in a feces-and-urine-infested home Thursday when Joliet police assisted the city’s Neighborhood Services Division during a housing inspection in the 600 block of Third Avenue.

Officers entered the home at 9:37 p.m. Thursday to find 21 cages, four outdoor animal runs, and two whelping boxes – used to protect pregnant or nurses female dogs, Joliet Deputy Police Chief Edgar Gregory said.

He said it is believed the home may have been used to house animals for a dog-fight-

ing operation.

Neighbors told officers they have observed a person drive up to the house in a red pick-up truck most evenings to feed the dogs, adding that the individual typically does not stay too long.

Joliet Township Animal Control seized the six dogs that were alive.

Officers also found a rifle, shotgun and a pellet gun. The residence has been boarded up so access into the home is limited.

“We don’t believe anyone was living there,” Gregory said.

No arrests have been made but the owner of the home has been located, Gregory said.

CHICAGO – Authorities said one worker is dead and another seriously injured after a wall collapsed at the Ford Motor Co.’s Chicago Assembly Plant on the city’s far South Side.

The Chicago Fire Department said the accident happened just before 11 a.m. on Friday in part of the plant under construction.

A section of a concrete wall collapsed, killing a 45-year-old man. Another man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in serious-to-critical condition.

Chicago police spokesman Kevin Quaid said the 45-year-old was pronounced dead at another hospital.

In a statement Ford officials said a contract worker was killed in a construction accident and another worker was injured while trying to help.

Speaker Madigan’s political funds see uptick in 2015

CHICAGO – A published report says campaign funds controlled

by House Speaker Michael Madigan collected over $7 million in 2015, including $2.8 million in December.

The Chicago Tribune reported that’s roughly $2.3 million more than the Democratic Party of Illinois’ leader took in during the same pre-election time frame two years ago.

Political experts said the uptick is a response to Gov. Bruce Rauner’s massive fundraising. The Republican had over $19.6 million in his campaign fund at October’s start.

State campaign finance law allows Madigan to take in multiple contributions from the same donor as long as each contribution goes into a separate fund. The Tribune reports that was the case with four funds Madigan controls.

Shedd officials will conduct tests after otter’s sudden death

CHICAGO – Officials with Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium said one of the facilities rescued female sea otters has died.

Vice President of Animal Health Dr. Bill Van Bonn announced the death earlier this week. Initial results of a necropsy show a rare and sudden abdominal condition of which the underlying cause is usually unknown. Additional testing is expected in the coming weeks.

The otter, named Cayucos, arrived at the Shedd several years ago. The otter was found stranded at five weeks old in California. The Shedd became the pup’s permanent home after U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officials found her unreleasable.

CHICAGO – Chicago police shot fewer people in 2015 than recent years despite police-involved shootings that have drawn national headlines.

The Chicago Tribune reported officers shot 22 people last year, eight of them fatally. That’s a 40 percent dip in the total number compared with 2014 when 37 people were shot and 16 killed.

The number of people shot by Chicago police officers has gradually dropped since 2011 when officers shot 56 people, 24 fatally.

In 2012, Chicago cops shot 45 people, killing 12. In 2013, officers shot 35 people, killing 14.

Interim Superintendent John Escalante tells The Tribune the drop is attributed to better training and supervision.

It’s the first trial to result from hundreds of lawsuits filed against GM after the auto giant revealed in 2014 that faulty ignition switches in Chevy Cobalts and other small cars necessitated an unprecedented recall. The switches can slip out of the “on” position, causing the cars to stall, knocking out power steering and turning off air bags.

GM knew about the faulty switches for more than a decade but did not recall them until February 2014. The company paid nearly $600 million to settle 399 claims made to a fund it established. Those claims covered 124 deaths and 275 injuries, though GM’s fund rejected more than 90 percent of the 4,343 claims it received, according to figures the company released in December.

4 shot dead in suburban Los Angeles home

ROWLAND HEIGHTS, Calif. – A man shot and killed his wife and

tled the gun away and fatally shot him in a chain of events apparently set off by a dispute over a washing machine, authorities said.

The two other victims killed were the son’s 48-year-old girlfriend who also lives at the house in Rowland Heights and a 27-year-old man who was visiting, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said Friday.

WASHINGTON – Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders raised more than $33 million during the past three months in his bid to win the Democratic nomination, his campaign said Saturday, just short of the amount brought in by rival Hillary Clinton during the same period.

Sanders, a self-described democratic socialist, has now collected $73 million for the primaries through a powerful online fundraising apparatus that should help him compete with Clinton deep into spring.

His haul will allow him to spend money at a comparable rate with Clinton, who raised $37 million since the beginning of October and $112 million during 2015 for her primary campaign.

St. Louis-area residents face massive cleanup, recovery

JOHNSON The Associated Press As the Mississippi River and its tributaries retreated Saturday from historic winter levels that flooded towns, forced evacuations and killed two dozen people, residents in the St. Louis area were facing a massive cleanup and recovery effort that will likely last weeks.

“The healing process, the restoration process has begun,” Chris Greenhagen, pastor of the Central Baptist Church in Eureka, Missouri, one of the communities hit by flooding along the Meramec River earlier this week, said in a telephone interview.

The flood, fueled by more than 10 inches of rain over a three-day period that began last weekend, is blamed for 24 deaths in Illinois and Missouri.

Water from the Mississippi, Meramec and Missouri rivers largely began receding Friday in the St. Louis area.

Two major highways – In-

terstate 44 and Interstate 55 – reopened south of St. Louis on Friday and some evacuees were also allowed then to return home.

On Saturday, while residents took stock of the ruin, President Barack Obama signed a federal emergency declaration for Missouri that allows federal aid to be used to help state and local response efforts. It also allows the Federal Emergency Management Agency to coordinate disaster relief efforts.

Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon had asked for the help.

Nixon and Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner also toured flood-ravaged areas as near-record crest predictions of the Mississippi River and levee breaks threatened more homes.

In Missouri, Noelle Pace said she packed up electronics, some furniture and her 4-year-old son’s clothing and toys and left Pacific on Dec. 28, the day after she received a request to evacuate. She felt lucky to find the damage isolated to her crawl space when

she returned for the first time Thursday.

“Everybody around us had catastrophic damage,” Pace said. She said she might not be able to move back for weeks while her landlord replaces soaked insulation.

“It doesn’t feel real yet,” she said.

Illinois Emergency Management Agency spokeswoman Patti Thompson said the state’s flooding death toll increased to nine. Fifteen have died in Missouri.

Rauner encouraged people to respect requests to evacuate.

“This is life threatening,” he told reporters at Carlyle Lake in Clinton County in southern Illinois. It’s not just the water; it’s the temperature. Hypothermia is a big risk to people’s lives.”

The main culprit in the St. Louis region was the Meramec River, a relatively small Mississippi tributary that bombarded communities in the far southwestern reaches of the St. Louis suburbs during the week.

Cities look at subsidized housing to stem teacher shortages down payment loans aimed at reducing living costs for another 300 educators, Deputy Superintendent Nyong Leigh said.

“Each one of these ideas would reach some modest number, but in aggregate, it would hopefully make a difference,” Leigh said.

Officials in the Roaring Fork School District in western Colorado, which serves three mountain towns in the valley that houses Aspen’s posh ski resorts, similarly leveraged a $122 million school construction bond on the November ballot to secure $15 million for subsidized teacher rentals.

The district hopes to acquire 15 to 20 apartments in each of the three towns, enough to house at least 10 percent of its 450 teachers, Assistant Superintendent Shannon Pelland said. In an area where the average home sells for $630,000 and the average teacher makes $47,000, housing costs are “without a doubt the number one reason we lose teachers and it’s the number one reason people turn down jobs,” Pelland said.

Officials in Santa Clara, California, found a workable formula more than a decade ago that other school districts in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond still are trying to replicate. Working with a private developer under a tax-exempt financing scheme, the school district built 70 apartments between 2002 and 2009 that collectively are known as Casa del Maestros, Spanish for “house of the teachers.”

When kindergarten teacher Katy Howser moved into a one-bedroom apartment there 6 ½ years ago, she was a 23-yearold living with her parents while she paid off her student

college loans and credit card debt. The teachers-only complex was all she could afford, but having other educators as neighbors turned out to be more than a financial advantage.

“Everyone has the same common courtesy for each other,” Howser said. “There are technically quiet hours, but it’s not ever really loud. Everyone just wants to come home and be quiet because we have to be loud all day.”

Now married and expecting her first child, Howser and her husband pay $1,700 a month for a two-bedroom apartment, at least $1,000 less than for a comparable place in the area. They will have to move out in June because tenants can only stay for seven years. Howser hopes they will have saved enough for a down payment on a house by then.

States plan renewed debate on LGBT rights, religious freedom

LIEB The Associated Press JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – With same-sex marriage now legal nationwide, lawmakers in numerous states are preparing for a new round of battles in 2016 over whether to grant discrimination protections to LGBT people or religious exemptions to nonprofits and businesses that object to gay marriage.

The tussle over civil rights and religious freedoms is one of several hot-button issues that could drive states in opposite policy directions, as lawmakers seek to appeal to voters during a year in which more

than 5,800 state legislative seats will be up for election.

Republicans hold majorities in two-thirds of the states’ legislative chambers, meaning they get to set the agenda.

Those priorities could include attempts to exempt businesses from providing wedding-related services to gay couples, expand gun rights and further restrictions on abortions.

Democrats, meanwhile, will likely be pushing in the opposite direction.

“What we’ve got is division,” said William Pound, executive director of the National Conference of State Legislatures.

He predicts there will be a

“significant number of bills” seeking to advance either religious rights or the civil rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people.

“You’ve got the Democratic states reacting very differently, a lot of the time, than the Republican states to these issues,” Pound said.

Those potentially divisive debates will be playing out as legislators also struggle with some traditionally difficult financial issues, such as budget shortfalls and calls to boost funding for public schools and infrastructure. Education issues are expected to be at the forefront in more than a third of the states, according to an

analysis by Associated Press statehouse reporters around the country.

Influential national groups such as the American Civil Liberties Union and the Family Research Council are preparing for a new round of legislative debates after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in June that states must allow same-sex marriage.

Their focus now is on the effect of that ruling.

There are 22 states with laws barring discrimination based on sexual orientation and 21 with laws limiting the government’s ability to burden the free exercise of religion.

But just four states – Connecticut, Rhode Island, Illinois and

New Mexico – have both.

The ACLU will be seeking to expand the list of places barring discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. It’s targeting at least a half dozen states – Arizona, Florida, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania – that have Republican-led legislatures and also may be pivotal in presidential elections.

The Supreme Court’s decision “certainly provides momentum on the issue,” said Pennsylvania Rep. Dan Frankel, a Democrat from the Pittsburgh area who has been unsuccessfully sponsoring gay rights bills for more than a decade.

SAN FRANCISCO – As the days get shorter, first grade teacher Esmeralda Jiménez watches the dimming afternoon sky outside her classroom window the way her pupils watch the clock at dismissal time.

The studio apartment Jiménez rents for $1,783 a month, or 43 percent of her salary, is located in one of San Francisco’s sketchiest neighborhoods. Getting home involves running a gauntlet of feces-strewn sidewalks, popping crack pipes, discarded needles and menacing comments – daily irritants that become more daunting after dark.

“If I lived in a better area, I wouldn’t feel so scared going home, and I would be able to stay at school a little longer,” Jiménez, 26, said. “You have so many things to do to prep for the next day, but it’s gotten to the point where even if I leave at a decent time I will walk three blocks out of my way to avoid some streets.”

It’s a scenario that has Jiménez wondering if she should find a profession that pays more, and public officials here and in other cities looking at housing as a tool to prevent the exodus of young educators like her.

Inspired by the success in the heart of the Silicon Valley of a 70-unit teachers-only apartment complex, school districts in high cost-of-living areas and rural communities that have long struggled to staff classrooms are considering buying or building rent-subsidized apartments as a way to attract and retain teachers amid concerns of a looming shortage.

Housing costs especially have become a point of friction for teachers in expensive cities such as Seattle, where teachers who went on a one-week strike in September said they could not afford to live in the same city as the children they teach.

In San Francisco, where many of Jiménez’s colleagues have roommates or long commutes, addressing the affordability crisis for teachers was one of the main selling points of a housing bond voters approved in November, the first to pass in a generation.

About $35 million of the $310 million to be raised has been earmarked for construction of up to 100 new apartments on surplus land owned by the San Francisco Unified School District. The units would be rented at below-market rates to the district’s 3,500 teachers and 1,600 classroom aides, who also would be eligible for new rental housing allowances and home

Yahoo’s Yahoos Dear Mr. Berko: Up until a month ago, I used Yahoo for stock prices and research on stocks I might buy. But without notice, Yahoo completely changed the Yahoo Finance site, using a beta version of a different format that is terrible to use. People I talk to are disgusted with the new, inferior format and content.

I’ve tried calling and sending emails, hoping Yahoo will go back to the original format, but no one at its California headquarters responds. It makes me glad my stockbroker sold Yahoo at $46 last February. Some people think it’s a good buy today at about $33, including my broker. I’m so disgusted I could spit. – DC, Akron, Ohio Dear DC: I haven’t counted the number of readers who’re screaming bloody murder because Yahoo (YHOO-$33.89) slipped a couple of cookies into their Internet Explorer, redirecting them to the new, cockeyed financial site without alerting a soul. Most public companies in the Standard & Poor’s 500 index have excellent media relations departments that are easily accessible to the press.

MR folks are often more informed about their company than management and often have fascinating personal stories to tell about management big shots. There are many reasons this company is called Yahoo; certainly, such synonyms as airhead, birdbrain, oaf, goof, dimwit and bonehead are apropos.

YHOO invested $1 billion in 2005 buying a 40 percent stake in Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. (BABA-$83.03). Shortly before BABA went public, brilliant Mayer sold back 535 million shares at $13 – for about $7 billion – reporting a $6 billion gain. Six months later, that stake would have been worth $45 billion. YHOO still owns 15 percent of BABA. However, YHOO’s 1 billion outstanding shares have a market cap of $33 billion – including its BABA shares, which are worth $30 billion. So YHOO without BABA is a $3 billion pig in a poke.

YHOO – with an aging board of directors, crippled management, clueless engineers and vacuous programmers – may be a takeover target. And Verizon Communications, which owns AOL, is looking.

Regulate fantasy sports Right now in Illinois, you can head to a local bar and play video slots. Spend your whole Christmas bonus or Social Security check on it, if you so desire.

Our state has legalized this form of gambling and makes money off it.

You can head to Harrah’s Joliet, sit down at a table and play blackjack for hours to your heart’s content.

Again, no issue with this in Illinois. It’s legal by law and brings in revenue for the state.

You can buy a lottery ticket or a scratch-off. Legal, and, heck, our state will even start paying winners again.

Playing daily fantasy sports for money? Not legal in Illinois, according to Attorney General Lisa Madigan. Not yet, anyway. Not until the state can pass legislation regulating it and, of course, make a buck off it.

For those unfamiliar, daily fantasy sports involves players competing for a predetermined prize by constructing fantasy rosters of professional or college athletes. It differs from your traditional fantasy league in that it often takes place over one day or one week. It’s two most popular operators are FanDuel and DraftKings.

Madigan recently was asked by a pair of state lawmakers for her opinion on daily fantasy sports.

The law “clearly declares that all games of chance or skill, when played for money, are illegal gambling in Illinois,” Madigan wrote.

Nevada has banned daily fantasy sports operators unless they get a casino license, and New York has made similar efforts to Madigan, although it is further along in the legal process.

DraftKings since has sued Madigan’s office. She is due to respond by Jan. 22. A trial, if necessary, would begin June 27. In the meantime, Illinois residents are allowed to play

daily fantasy sports for money.

Our stance long has been against the expansion of gambling in Illinois, but although we agree fantasy sports is gambling, this is a different situation altogether.

Fantasy sports have been around since the 1980s, and they’ve exploded in popularity in the past decade. The Fantasy Sports Trade Association estimates 56.8 million people in the U.S. and Canada play fantasy sports, up from 32 million in 2010.

The FSTA estimates the average player spends $162 on their traditional fantasy league and $257 in daily fantasy sports. Those estimates were $60 and $5, respectively, in 2012.

The state gets some money from daily fantasy players. If you’ve won more than $600 in a year playing daily fantasy sports on DraftKings or FanDuel, you pay taxes on that income on a 1099-MISC form.

The point is, fantasy and daily fantasy sports aren’t going away.

So, what’s the answer here?

Of all places, it might be in the Illinois General Assembly.

Rep. Michael Zalewski, D-Riverside, filed HB 4323, or the Fantasy Contests Act, on Oct. 27. It’s in the hands of the rules committee right now.

The bill legalizes gambling on fantasy sports and includes several regulations. Among them, fantasy operators must verify a player is 18 years old or older and check for tax liens and child support obligations players might owe. The bill requires fantasy operators to conduct a yearly, third-party independent audit and submit it to the state attorney general, and it prevents the sharing of confidential information that could affect fantasy contest play.

If fantasy and daily fantasy aren’t going away – and they aren’t – common sense regulation is an acceptable reality.

What to look forward to in 2016 If we learned anything from 2015, it’s that 2016 will be nothing like what we imagine it will. Suffice it to say that in my look ahead to 2015 last year, I did not predict that Donald Trump would lead in the quest for the Republican presidential nomination. If I had called that one, I’d be working as a psychic.

But I am prescient enough to be able to predict certain things with amazing accuracy, such as the fact that 2016 will see a number of notable anniversaries. You don’t have to be Nostradamus to make that call.

The National Park Service turns 100 years old in 2016. In 1916, the federal government saw the need for an organization to oversee and protect our nation’s natural wonders and monuments. Today, the National Park Service administers more than 400 locations, including 59 parks, and employs 20,000 people.

To the Editor: Joliet is surrounded by drugs and drug dealers. Whether you want to believe it or not, I know that drugs are being sold, bought and used on almost every street in Joliet.

This is a problem for families because parents are struggling to keep their kids away from these bad situations.

At least 30 percent of Joliet’s crime rate involves drugs in some way. This is not good at all, especially for a town that always has had this bad reputation. Joliet is filled with gang members who pride themselves on who sells and makes the most money from drugs. They consider this a form of power, which is embarrassing.

Joliet really needs to find a way to stop this madness involving drugs. It’s affecting young children and teens.

Young adults are growing up around these bad situations, and the sad part is that they think it is OK to get involved.

I personally know a father of three who grew up in Joliet and was addicted to cocaine and marijuana.

Marijuana edibles a milestone

To the Editor: This month, patients were able to buy cannabis-infused products that include “edibles.” This is a significant milestone as it provides another option for patients who cannot, or choose not to smoke cannabis. Your recent article, “Medical marijuana edibles debut in Illinois, come with risks” (Dec. 21), left out important information on why edibles are so significant for Illinois patients.

Oils are derived from the cannabis plant and infused into chocolate, granola bars, drinks, gummies and other products.

This is done in a highly regulated laboratory setting and exact dosing is included on each package.

President Barack Obama is vowing that won’t be the case in his final year in office – pointing to major achievements during 2015 including re-establishing diplomatic

relations with Cuba, the Paris climate change agreement and negotiating the nuclear deal with Iran.

In the coming year, Obama has announced he will push for Congressional approval of his sweeping Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal, which has bipartisan support and

bipartisan opposition. House Speaker Paul Ryan has called the TPP “very important,” but Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said it would be a “big mistake” for Obama to push for a vote on the measure before the 2016 elections.

The president has also expressed a desire to make good on a long-deferred campaign promise and close the detention facility in Guantanamo Bay, going so far as to use executive authority if Congress won’t act.

It’s also a virtual certainty that our leaders will have to do something to fight ISIS both in Syria and Iraq, and here at home. It’s also certain that there will be a political fight here over exactly what to do. Obama has been pressuring Congress to finally, formally authorize the use of military force against

ISIS. Thus far, the military campaign has been conducted under the same legal authority that Congress granted President Bush after the 9/11 attacks back in 2001.

One year from now, we’ll have a new president-elect, new Olympic winners and record holders, and another year’s worth of new songs, movies, memories, heartaches and joys. And 2016 is also a Leap Year.

So let’s hope it’s a better year than most, because it will definitely be a longer year than most.

MEN’S BASKETBALL: ST. FRANCIS 75, LEWIS 55

USF ends huge week with win

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – When Lewis has a good men’s basketball team for its level, and St. Francis has a good team for its level, it usually means advantage Flyers.

That was not the case Saturday at the Sullivan Center on the USF campus, however.

The Saints, keyed by the shooting of reserve guard Jo Jo Ballestero, outscored Lewis, 36-18, over the final 15 minutes of the first half to take a 43-27 lead en route to a 75-55 nonconference victory.

That outcome snaps a 13game losing streak to the Flyers for St. Francis (13-1), which is ranked No. 2 in NAIA Division II. Lewis (9-3), perennially strong in NCAA Division II, had won 42 straight against NAIA opponents dating back to a 70-66 loss to Olivet Nazarene on Dec. 30, 2000.

“When you look at Division II and NAIA schools, the talent is not that huge of a discrepancy,” USF coach Ryan Marks noted. “The difference usually is depth and size.

“If you look at us against Lewis over time, we probably aren’t winning at the end in a majority of the games. But this was one we could get.”

That concluded a week where the Saints also beat defending national champion and No. 5-ranked Cornerstone.

“They’re a good team and they have a lot of seniors,” Lewis coach Scott Trost said of the Saints. “When they shoot the ball well like they did today, they are very good. You have to give them credit.

“In every facet of the game, we got our butts kicked. They were well prepared, ran their stuff well, and we didn’t run our stuff well. It was a lackluster effort on everyone’s part on our side, coaches included.”

Ballestero, a 3-point shooting specialist who came in in averaging 8.3 points, said he had not been shooting well the past couple of games. But he worked overtime practicing his shot on New Year’s Day and again early Saturday, and it paid dividends. He scored 14 of 18 Saints’ points in the first-

“There’s always people that think some of my shots are iffy,” Ballestero said.

The Saints, who never led by less than 14 points in the second half, were without 6-foot-8 senior post player and second-leading scorer Jens Kennedy for a second straight game because of the aftermath of a concussion, and needed contributions from other sources.

“He doesn’t do that every night,” Marks said of Ballestero’s marksmanship. “But without Jens, we had to make threes.”

USF finished 11 of 28 from beyond the arc while Lewis was 2 of 16. The Saints shot .417 overall on 25 of 60 and limited the Flyers to a .339 mark on 20 of 59. St. Francis hit 14 of 15 free throws, a .933 clip, while Lewis was 13 of 22 (.591). USF also had a 44-38 rebounding edge.

The all-around game of senior forward Ilya Ilyayev and the sticky man-to-man defense that Landus Anderson and Brian Edwards applied to Lewis’ main man, Max Strus, all played into the outcome.

Ilyayev finished game highs of 24 points and 17 rebounds.

Like Ballestero, he was 4 of 7 from 3-point range, and he made all six free throws. Strus, who came in shooting .511 from the the field and averaging 25.1 points, made 2 of 14 shots, was blanked from beyond the arc and scored nine points.

“Last year, we went to their [Flyers’] house and got embarrassed,” Ilyayev said. “We got blown out of the gym. For me, personally, this was a revenge game.”

Ilyayev noted Lewis’ propensity for second-chance points, so he wanted to get on the defensive boards and limit those opportunities.

Mission accomplished as he grabbed 13 defensive rebounds.

“My shot wasn’t falling early, so I did what else I could to help the team,” Ilyayev said.

“That was huge when Jo Jo got hot. Then after they started to overplay him, it was my turn to step up and hit some shots.”

As for Strus, Anderson said, “He’s tough. I just wanted to stay as close to him as I can. I have to give a of thanks to our help defense. And when Brian

[Edwards] got in, he did an amazing job on him.”

“Landus and Brian were cemented to Strus the best they can be,” Marks said. “I told them he is going to score. He is a marvelous player. When he starts a game good, you can’t slow him down, so it was important that we didn’t let that happen.”

Edvinas Presniakovas contributed nine points for the Saints, all on 3-pointers, Iain Morison chipped in eight and Jake Raspopovich had six assists. Kyle Nelson led Lewis with 14 points and seven rebounds. Miles Simelton scored 10 points.

Donations from the large crowd totaled $3,100 with all proceeds benefiting former Saints basketball player Shawn Green and his fight against brain cancer.

New Year’s Eve was one of the best days in the winter of Joliet Catholic basketball coach Joe Gura.

Except for that one blip.

Gura’s Hilltoppers had just finished off Glenbard South, 56-37, Thursday afternoon to win the Romeoville Christmas Classic. JCA (9-2) accomplished the feat in impressive fashion as none of the four opponents came close to knocking off the Hilltoppers.

That night, JCA assistant Tom Knapczyk was getting married, and Gura was anxious to get to the wedding and enjoy his New Year’s Eve celebration there.

The blip came when Gura was informed after the game about how Joliet West had lost that afternoon to Peoria Manual in the semifinals of the Pontiac Holiday Tournament. The Tigers were up, 73-71, in overtime, but Manual’s Da’Monte Williams was fouled shooting a 3-pointer with 1.2 seconds left. He hit all three free throws to win the game.

“Oh, Nicky, Nicky,” Gura said, his look one of anguish.

Gura, you might recall, was the first head coach at Plainfield North. He guided the Tigers through the 20062007 and 2007-2008 seasons.

Nick DiForti was on his staff, and Gura always has held him in the highest regard.

When Gura moved on, DiForti became the North coach, and Gura expressed how thrilled he was his friend. DiForti was the North head coach for five seasons, and this is his third year at Joliet West.

Whether it is at Joliet West or anywhere else, Gura always will pull for DiForti’s team to succeed.

Meanwhile, this is Gura’s fifth season at the helm at JCA. “Remember when we talked that first year about where we want to be in Year 5?” Gura said. “It was rough for a couple years there, but look where we are now. Since the run two years ago [when

Last season, the Hilltoppers finished above .500 for the first time in more than 30 years. This season, above .500 is not the pinnacle.

“We’re going to try to build on this,” Romeoville tournament MVP Jalen Jackson said. “We’re shooting for the 20-win mark and to go as far as we can in the [postseason].”

“Actually, we played better than we expected in this tournament,” senior guard and all-tournament selection Harry Davis said. “We beat everybody 10 points or more.”

Of course, the East Suburban Catholic Conference is unforgiving.

“Our schedule gets so tough,” Gura said. “We have

seven conference games left, they’re all tough and a bunch of them are on the road.”

What is exciting from JCA’s standpoint, however, is that the Hilltoppers are playing well defensively against everyone and appear to have the means at least to compete against the big boys of the ESCC. “When we get the ball and play to our tempo, there are few teams that can stop us,” Jackson said. “We have a lot of athleticism and a lot of quickness.”

JCA relies heavily on guards Jackson, Davis and Jared Lenoir, with junior Jack Surin contributing in small doses off the bench.

The contributions from the biggest of the Hilltoppers – 6-foot-5 senior Luke Mander, 6-4 junior Pete Ragen and 6-4 junior Donavan Finch –

perhaps are not always as eye-catching, but they are huge. The trio has softened the blow of standout baseball pitcher Drake Fellows deciding not to play basketball this season, a decision Gura understood.

“It was a huge blow losing Drake Fellows, a 6-5 kid who can shoot the three,” Gura said. “But Mander, Ragen and Finch have picked up the slack. Mander and Ragen, you don’t notice all their contributions until you watch the tape of the game. Then you see how valuable they are, how they do things to help you win.”

The opponent generally learns in a hurry that the big guys play hard.

“Mander and Pete are our chippy players,” Davis said in a complimentary tone. “They play like that all the time.”

“Mander does not make too

many friends on the court,” Jackson added.

“Well, he is a defensive end,” Gura said when informed of Jackson’s comment on Mander, who returned to football for his senior year and was an all-conference defensive end.

There is a long way to go this season, of course, and the ESCC perhaps is even more loaded than usual. But now, fans are interested in what is going on in the winter at JCA, with good reason.

“I am very happy,” Gura said. “When I first got here, you could throw a hand grenade in the stands and not hurt anyone. Now, we have people coming out to see us.

To see our gym filled, that’s what makes me really happy.”

Young Morris wrestlers salvage win over Pontiac

By JEFF DE GRAW Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – The Morris wrestling team hosted the New Year’s Quad on Saturday that included LaSalle-Peru, Ottawa and Pontiac high schools.

After losing a close match to Ottawa and losing big to LaSalle-Peru, the Redskins won the final dual over Pontiac in dramatic fashion.

With the finale starting at the 220-pound match, the Redskins got pins from Colby Eschenbaum and Charlie Clark to take a 12-0 lead.

Morris extended the lead with a pin by Michael Milton at 113 and a 6-4 decision by Zach Sater at 120 to go up 21-6.

Pontiac won the 126- and 132-pound matches before

Ethan Elleson (138) got a pin to make it 27-17 Redskins.

Pontiac won the next four weight classes (145, 152, 160 and 170) to take a 36-27 lead.

For Morris to have any chance, the Redskins needed Cody Baldridge (182) to come up big. He was taking on the GEI Illinois Matmen’s thirdranked Class 2A state wrestler, Levi Ransom.

Baldridge needed overtime and won a 6-4 decision to keep the Redskins alive at 36-30.

In the final match at 195, Morris freshman R.J. Roderick got the pin at 1:39 and the score was tied at 36.

In the tiebreaker, Morris received a point on criteria E, with its pin and victory earning the point over the Pontiac technical fall and victory.

“That was fun,” Morris coach Jon Lanning said. “We had the lead, went through a rough spot and had to battle back. Cody and R.J. came up big. This team is learning and after the first two matches against Ottawa and LaSalle-Peru, it was great to see us hang in there and continue to fight. We are so young.”

In the first match of the day, the Redskins lost to Ottawa, 48-36.

Baldridge started at 182 with a pin and, after a forfeit win by Abby Eisenbeis and a Milton pin at 113, the match was tied at 18.

Ottawa got pins in the next four matches, taking a 42-18 lead before two forfeit victories (145 and 152) for the Redskins made it 42-30 Ottawa.

After a loss at 160, Jeffrey Johnson won with a pin at 170 to get within 12.

“That was our youth and inexperience to start the day,” Lanning said. “We were close, Cody and Charlie had opportunities early but let it get away.

We are always learning and it’s gaining the experience. We talked about taking advantage of those opportunities between matches. You flip one or both of those and it’s a different ball game.”

In the second dual, the Redskins dropped a 48-21 decision to LaSalle-Peru.

“If you look at the score, you would think it wasn’t a match,” Lanning said. “It was a lot closer that what the score indicates. L-P [LaSalle-Peru] has a nice team, but we real-

ly battled and again we were close in some of the matches.”

Jakob Eisenbeis (132), Johnson, Baldride and Clark won matches for the Redskins.

“This was a good day overall,” Lanning said. “We came together at the end and when we needed people to come through, they did. That is huge for as young as we are. These kids never quit and are learning every time out out. If you look at it, we could have been 2-1 today, it was that close.

We are coming along and I’m happy with the effort and the day.”

Morris will host Sycamore 5:30 p.m. Thursday in a home conference matchup before traveling to Lincoln-Way West for a Saturday’s Warriors Mega Dual.

“Mariyah’s performance today may have been the best I have ever seen,” Lewis coach Kristen Gillespie said. “She scored every way possible.”

Jessica Kelliher added 19 points and Kayla Brewer totaled 10 points and six rebounds.

The game went to the half tied at 31 because of a half court heave by Brawner-Henley at the buzzer. That gave her 18 points in the first 20 minutes.

Lewis shot 53.2 percent (25 of 47) while limiting the Rangers to a .368 mark (25 of 68).

Walsh had 10 kills and hit .529 while having eight block assists, Schmiegelt had three kills and three block assists and Fifer handed out 44 assists while collecting eight digs and four block assists. In addition, senior opposite Patrick Lilly finished with 11 kills, which is two more than he wound up with all of last season.

“It was the first opportunity for some of these guys to be

on the court, and even though they made a few errors, they did a lot of great things, too,” Friend said. “That’s part of it in the beginning of the year.

Who can kind of settle down when it’s chaos time, and I thought we did a good job of managing some of that. And a couple of our seniors stepped up and played some really good volleyball, which was also great to see.

“Santa Barbara is a great team, but we always open up tough because we want to see what we can do in the beginning of the year. This is a good measuring stick and a good win for us to get at home so we can let our fans see what we can do this year.”

The Flyers had a 20-15 lead slip away in the opener before rallying and then pulled out another close win in a very tight second game. After the Gauchos held off a Lewis

comeback in the third game, the Flyers built a late fourpoint lead in the fourth and closed things out.

“This was a big match against a California team to start off the season and I thought that we played great,” Simmons said. “We’ve been tested all week in doubles, so we were ready to go and all of us just wanted to come out and play well. We closed well, focused when we needed to and put the ball away when had to.

“Last year, we were tested really well since we were the second side against the runner-up to the national championship team. So that put us in a really good position for this year and we’re ready to go. ” UCSB was led by Jonah Seif (43 assists), Jacob Delson (14 kills), Matt Marsh (13 kills), Corey Chavers (12 kills), Connor Drake (five block assists) and Hayden Boehle (11 digs).

What Lions team will the Bears see?

There is nothing harder than trying to anticipate what to expect when neither club is playing for anything but pride in the regular-season finale – except when you add a team that is playing for a general manager and head coach who are likely to be gone the next day.

Sheldon White has been the interim general manger in Detroit since Martin Mayhew was fired along with team president Tom Lewand after the Lions’ 4510 loss to the Chiefs in Week 8.

New president Rod Wood has said White is a candidate for the permanent GM job.

However, the hiring of someone familiar to Bears fans, Ernie Accorsi, to oversee the search for the permanent GM makes it highly unlikely the job will stay in house.

While the Lions have responded positively to the changes, going 5-2 since the firings, it also seems unlikely coach Jim Caldwell will be retained if a new GM is hired.

Will the Lions show up determined to win one for Cald-

What we do know is the Lions have been a different team since they defeated the Bears, 37-34, in Week 6 in Detroit for their first win of the season.

If there is going to be a different outcome Sunday, the Bears are going to have to be better against the run, and coming off one of their better run defense performances of the season against Doug Martin and the Bucs, Bears fans can hope.

The Lions other big in-season change was the firing of offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi – grandson of Vince Lombardi – the week before the Chiefs game and promotion of Jim Bob Cooter who has turned Matt Stafford into a different and vastly improved quarterback the second half of the season.

The good news is if the Bears can repeat their offensive performance through the air in Detroit – Cutler was 26-of-41 for 353 yards, 1 TD and 1 Int. - they could very well come out on top.

That will be difficult though without Alshon Jeffery who was 8-147, with 1 TD and Martellus Bennett who had 6 catches for 59 yards.

The biggest key for the Bears in this one is they have to improve over one of their worst rushing performances of the year – 31-91, 2.9 yards per rush – week six in Detroit, and coming off their second best ground game of the season last week in Tampa – 39-174, 4.5 yards per rush - and knowing the Lions are just 19th against the run while the Bucs are 10th, they could have a shot.

There are two other things we know about this game.

First, playing with a lead is huge and should either team get down by more than a couple of scores they are likely to start thinking about clearing out their lockers.

Finally, there’s not a person at Halas Hall that wants to finish this season 1-5 in the division, again, last in the NFC North or 1-7 at home.

It’ll be interesting to see how much any of that helps.

ROMEOVILLE – Julian Moses admitted he was a bit apprehensive going into his first college volleyball match.

But the outside hitter didn’t look like a newcomer for Lewis University’s men’s volleyball team when it kicked off its season against UC Santa Barbara on Saturday.

All the redshirt freshman did was get a match-high 21 kills and hit .471 while adding six block assists and eight digs to help the No. 8 Flyers capture a hard-fought 25-23, 25-23, 2325, 25-22 victory over the No. 9 Gauchos in both squads’ openers at Neil Carey Arena.

Moses was joined by two other redshirt freshmen in the starting lineup for the new-look Flyers, who suffered heavy graduation losses from last year’s 27-4 NCAA run-

ner-up.

Outside hitter Michael Simmons had four kills, five digs and three block assists and libero Jake Walenga, from Frankfort, had 10 digs while another redshirt freshman, Mitch Perinar – a Minooka graduate – supplied three key kills in the final game.

“A lot of us were pretty nervous at the beginning, but then once we realized that it was just playing volleyball. We all showed up and had a really good time and played with a lot of great energy,” Moses said.

By FRED GOODALL The Associated Press TAMPA, Fla. – The architect of Tennessee’s resurgence won’t be happy until the Volunteers are perennial championship contenders again.

Butch Jones, nevertheless, is proud of the progress the Vols have made in his three seasons as coach and confident the program is on solid footing as it moves into 2016.

Friday’s 45-6 victory over No. 12 Northwestern in the Outback Bowl not only capped Tennessee’s best season in eight years, but showcased some of the young talent that gives the Vols a chance to keep climbing.

Joshua Dobbs threw for 166 yards and ran for two touchdowns, while Outback MVP Jalen Hurd rushed for 130 yards and one TD for the Vols, who finished with at least nine wins for the first time since 2007.

Evan Berry put a punctuation mark on the team’s sixth consecutive win by returning one of Tennessee’s four interceptions 100 yards for a TD in the closing seconds.

Irish can’t make up early deficit

By BOB BAUM The Associated Press GLENDALE, Ariz. – Notre Dame fell behind early and never could catch up with powerful Ohio State.

The result was yet another major bowl defeat for the Irish, 44-28 to the Buckeyes in the Fiesta Bowl on Friday.

Ohio State (12-1) scored touchdowns the first two times they had the ball.

The game started at 11 a.m., local time, and the Irish were slow to wake up. They were scoreless in the first quarter for the first time all season.

“Obviously, their first series was outstanding. They ran the ball effectively right down the field,” Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly. “So I just think that they executed very well early on. It was the difference in the game really, those 14 points early. We had to play catch-up from there.”

The score reached 28-7, but No. 8 Notre Dame (10-3) climbed back into it with a touchdown late in the first half and another in the third quarter, a 4-yard scoring pass from DeShone Kizer to Chris Brown to cut seventh-ranked Ohio State’s lead to 28-21 with 8:58 still to go.

Notre Dame, for all its national football notoriety, has gone 22 years without a major bowl victory. The Irish are 0-7 in those big games since beating Texas A&M in the 1993 Cotton Bowl.

Notre Dame gave up 82 points in its two losses this season – to Stanford and Ohio

State. The 44 allowed Friday were the most they gave up all season. Kelly, though, said his team in headed in the right direction.

“I like where we are,” he said. “We’re going to keep banging at the door. Keep playing Ohio State, keep playing Florida State, keep playing Alabama, keep playing these teams in these kinds of venues, in these kinds of games.”

The Irish were depleted, especially on defense.

Linebacker Jaylon Smith, arguably Notre Dame’s best defensive player and a potential top-10 draft pick, went down early with a knee injury when he was shoved to the ground by an Ohio State player. Smith was on crutches on the sideline at game’s end with what Kelly called “a significant knee injury.”

“The guy is so impactful on our defense,” Kelly said. “You lose a guy like that early on, it significantly affects what you’re doing defensively.”

Smith’s backup Te’von Coney also was knocked out of the game, with a shoulder injury.

Defensive lineman Sheldon Day was not at full strength but made it through his final college game. Day hurt his foot in practice this week but X-rays were negative.

“Then (he) got deathly ill last night,” Kelly said. “We had to have him on medicine and IVs to make it through the game. That’s the kind of captain he is. He’s unbelievable.

He gave us everything he had today. He was on IVs all morning.”

Elliott, who has announced he is leaving for the NFL, tied a Fiesta Bowl record with his four scores, three of them on short runs.

Rudock shrugs off injury to lead Wolverines to victory

By KYLE HIGHTOWER The Associated Press ORLANDO, Fla. – Someone forgot to tell Michigan this was supposed to be a struggle between defenses.

Jake Rudock shrugged off an injury and threw for 278 yards and three touchdowns as No. 17 Michigan’s offense overwhelmed No. 19 Florida during a 41-7 victory Friday in the Citrus Bowl.

“I would say this was the best game we’ve played all year,” Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh said. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen our offense play better. Our defense was magnificent. ... The three and outs, the stops, the play on

third down, everybody playing great team defense. It was really good.”

There were some questions surrounding how effective Rudock would be after he was knocked out of Michigan’s regular-season finale against Ohio State with a left shoulder injury. He dismissed any doubt about his health almost immediately in the Wolverines’ first bowl victory since 2012.

Michigan (10-3) had three touchdown drives of at least 70 yards and finished with 503 yards of offense against a Florida defense that entered the game ranked sixth nationally.

Rudock credited the coaching staff’s game plan and

scouting efforts with putting him and his teammates in optimum situations.

“We understood how they played – they play fast and they play physical,” Rudock said. “I had an easy job. I just had to get it out there to them.”

He also had lots of support on the ground from tailback De’Veon Smith, who finished with 109 yards rushing.

“We just came out there and competed today. It just shows that hard work pays off,” Smith said.

Leading by 10 at halftime, Michigan scored on each of its first two possessions in the third quarter to take a 31-7 lead.

Michigan’s defense played without safety Jabrill Peppers, who sat out with an undisclosed injury. But the Wolverines didn’t miss him, holding the Gators (10-4) to 28 total yards in the second half.

“It was a case of getting your rump kicked in. That’s what it was,” Florida coach Jim McElwain said. “They really took it to us on both sides of the ball.”

Florida quarterback Treon Harris had his moments early. But he also threw a costly interception in the end zone late in the first half that stifled the Gators’ attempt to stay in the game.

Michigan took a 17-7 lead into halftime because of the

efficiency of the Wolverines’ passing attack.

Michigan’s receivers did a great job creating lanes for Rudock to throw to, and ran crisp routes to open up deepplay opportunities.

The best example was on Rudock’s 31-yard touchdown pass to Jehu Chesson early in the second quarter that put Michigan up 14-7. Chesson used a double move, initially faking an inside slant, to strand and separate from star cornerback Vernon Hargreaves.

Despite some unsteady outings to end the regular season, Harris managed the Gators’ offense well for most of the first half.

PASADENA, Calif. – The first time Christian McCaffrey touched the ball in the 102nd Rose Bowl, he took it 75 yards for a touchdown. A few hundred yards later, Stanford’s sophomore star had smashed the oldest bowl game’s record for all-purpose yards while leading the Cardinal to a blowout win over Iowa.

Sure, McCaffrey didn’t win the Heisman Trophy, and Stanford barely missed out on the College Football Playoff.

McCaffrey and the mighty Cardinal are still headed into the new year with the Pac-12 champions’ most coveted postseason trophy – and the brightest of futures.

McCaffrey caught a touchdown pass on the opening snap and returned a punt 66 yards for another score while racking up 368 all-purpose yards, propelling No. 5 Stanford to a 45-16 victory over the sixthranked Hawkeyes on Friday.

McCaffrey finished with 172 yards rushing, 105 yards receiving and 91 on kick returns, putting an appropriate cap on the season in which he set the NCAA record for all-purpose yards. He also became the first player ever to rack up more than 100 yards rushing and 100 yards receiving in a Rose Bowl – and he even became the single-season rushing leader in Stanford history with 2,109 yards on the ground.

Stanford and Iowa finished in the final two spots outside the College Football Playoff field, but the Cardinal showed they belong among the best with their 12th win in their final 13 games.

MORRIS – The old saying, “It takes one to know one” certainly applies – in the best possible way – to Lynne Curry of Alaska and formerly of Homewood.

Curry, president of The Growth Company in Alaska, whose workplace advice column appeared in the former Morris Daily Herald in 2010 and 2011, said she used to be the target of bullies – even though Curry was the business owner and the bullies were her employees.

She said her fourth book, “Beating the Workplace Bully: A Tactical Guide to Taking Charge,” is already selling well. And as a former victim, Curry wants others in simLynne Curry ilar situations to learn how to reclaim their boundaries.

“I used to wind up being a doormat for other bullies, both personally and professionally,” Curry said. “People walked on me because I was so soft and so easily intimidated. … I changed how I handled it. And suddenly, I turned the tables.”

Where did Curry find this information? She and an employee agreed to teach a workshop on handling bullies and divided the duties. Curry would talk about interpersonal relationships and the employee would address the bullying.

Thirty-five people signed up for the workshop, Curry said. Then the coworker left town for a personal emergency. So Curry put together the entire course.

“In the process, I learned the traps victims fell into, the mistakes I always made,” Curry said.

None of those reactions make the bullying stop. In fact, once a bully realizes he or she has found a target, the negative behavior escalates.

And don’t expect your workplace to help. Many organizations don’t have anti-bullying

policies and even when they do, human resources are reluctant to confront bullies.

“Here’s what happens if a human resource person goes after the bully,” Curry said.

“The bully goes after the human resource person.”

In “Beating the Workplace Bully: A Tactical Guide to Taking Charge,” Curry also describes the triangular pattern that can occur in workplace bullying. It consists of

the bully, the victim and the person who jumps in to help and takes responsibility for the bully and the victim.

None of those positions are healthy, Curry said.

“The only good place to be is outside that triangle,” Curry said. “That’s being an adult grounded in reality. That’s learning how not to be a target and to learn how to stand up to the bully emotionally and interpersonally.”

Types of bullies one may encounter in the workplace, according to Lynne Curry, author of “Beating the Workplace Bully: A Tactical Guide to Taking Charge” include: • Scorched earth fighter – He wants to win so badly and is so convinced he’s right, he’ll initiate World War III to attain it. He is cold and calculating.

• Angry aggressive jerk – This bully loves to shout, find fault, bash and get in people’s faces.

He masks his incompetence with bombast.

• Silent grenade – His facial expressions silently communicate seething anger. Because this bully occasionally explodes, the people around him shrink from his nonverbal intimidation.

• Shapeshifter – This guy’s the workplace Jekyll and Hyde.

He plays charmer to anyone he feels is advantageous to him and belittles those he feels are beneath him.

• Narcissist manipulator – He views the world through a lens of me, me, me. He feels entitled, superior and above the rules; he struts like a peacock. He lacks empathy and easily stomps on others, especially if they dare criticize him.

• Wounded rhino – A real rhinoceros will lower his head, break into a gallop and then gore the challenger. Psychologically speaking, that’s the tactic of a bully whose “authority” is questioned.

• Character assassin – This is the bully who spreads destructive and defamatory stories about others with the goal of eroding another person’s reputation.

• Cyber bully – This is a character assassin who’s taken defamation online.

JOLIET – Members of 100+ Women Who Care of Will County had their third “big check” presentation donating $2,300 to All Herding Breed Dog Rescue of Joilet on Dec. 12.

Lois Carberry, AHBDR’s Director was presented the checks by members of 100+ WWC of Will County. AHBDR is a strong advocate against animal suffering, abuse and neglect. Their mission is to rescue dogs from high kill shelters that euthanize. They bring the dogs into safety, have them vetted, feed them a proper diet, train and exercise them until they reach their goal of finding them new homes and matching them up with forever families.

“AHBDR is incredibly grateful for this gift and thank 100+ WWC of Will County. This donation will go to help dogs who need severe medical attention. We have dogs that are heartworm positive and treatment gets costly. We give them medication and the tender loving care they need to recover, so that they can be adopted. Thank you again to the 100+ WWC members who chose to support AHBDR.” said Lois Carberry.

This was 100+ Women Who Care of Will County’s third donation. 100+ WWC is a philanthropic group formed for local

women who are interested in supporting their communities by contributing to Will County charities together as a group to increase the donation impact.

Member Cherie McWhereter said, “I was so happy to be able to help out AHBDR. Having rescued a shelter dog myself, I know how important these funds were to them. I know they will put the money to good use. Just another great charity in Will County that I didn’t even know about.

100 +Women Who Care is doing a lot of good in our community.”

All 100+ WWC members/ teams make a pledge to donate $100 four times a year. At each of the quarterly meetings members nominate charities, three are chosen at random, and after a brief presentation, the members vote on which charity to support. Once the winning charity is announced, everyone writes a $100 check, on the spot directly to that charity. All charities nominated must be located in, and serve Will County and must have 501(c)(3) non-profit status.

A four-member team from Aux Sable won Best Machine Performance, and a four-member team from Ira Jones won Best Machine Design at the

JOLIET – Joliet Central High School senior Alexis Granados has earned the distinction of National Hispanic Scholar through the College Board’s National Hispanic Recog- Alexis Granados nition Program.

Each year, only 5,000 of the 250,000 Hispanic/Latino students who take the PSAT exam are invited to become a National Hispanic

Scholar.

To participate in the program, students must score in the top 2.5 percent among Hispanic and Latino PSAT takers in their region as well as earn a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher out of the 4.0 scale. The student must be at least one-quarter Hispanic/Latino.

The National Hispanic Recognition Program is an academic honor created by the College Board used to highlight Hispanic/Latino students’ outstanding educational achievements.

Two District 202 elementary principals in Plainfield moving to administrative posts The HERALD-NEWS PLAINFIELD – Two veteran District 202 elementary principals will take over key district wide elementary administrative posts next year.

Eagle Pointe Elementary Principal Scott Fink will be the new director for elementary administration and personnel.

He will replace current director Mark Heiss.

Freedom Elementary Principal Tammy Sroczynski will be the new director for elementary curriculum and instruction, replacing Joan Woolwine in that role. Both Heiss and Woolwine are retiring in June 2016.

The District 202 Board of Education approved the new assignments at its Dec. 14 regular meeting.

Sroczynski has worked her

entire 13-year education career in District 202. She started in 2003 as an information literacy teacher splitting time between LinTammy coln and Eagle Sroczynski Pointe elementary schools, and then continued at Lincoln as a third-grade teacher and later as a fourthgrade teacher in Scott Fink 2004.

She worked as a differentiation specialist at Lincoln from 2006-10 and served as interim assistant principal at Eagle Pointe in 2009.

Sroczynski served as assistant principal at Lincoln Ele-

mentary in 2010-11, and special education administrator there in 2011-12. She then served as assistant principal at Charles Reed Elementary in 2011-12 and was named Freedom’s principal in 2013.

Fink started his education career in 1993, serving six years as a high school biology teacher in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

He served as a graduate assistant for one year at Northern Illinois University before serving two years from 2001-03 as Director of Learning/Dean the first year, and then K-8 principal in Taft District 90 in Lockport.

Fink came to District 202 in 2003, serving three years as assistant principal at Drauden Point Middle School before being named Eagle Pointe’s principal in 2006. He is working toward his doctorate.

NHBW Joliet Chapter hosts book giveaway The HERALD-NEWS JOLIET – On Dec. 11, the Joliet chapter of the National Hook-Up of Black Women Inc. and Laraway School District 70C hosted a book giveaway event at Laraway School in Joliet.

The members of NHBW members prepared 37 crates by filling them with at least 25 books each. All of the books were geared toward third grade level readers. It is the hope of NHBW that the bookfilled crates would be part or a start of personal home libraries for the students. The project gifted 1,000 new and gently used books to students that day.

JOLIET – Joliet Central High School economics students gained relevant financial experience when they showcased their investment portfolios to a community panel Dec. 10.

The students in John Wietlispach’s College Prep and Patrick McGovern’s co-taught classes studied stocks, mutual funds and bonds in relation to risk tolerance in the Stock Market Game simulation sponsored

by Econ Illinois.

The students also competed in the national writing contest, Invest Write, sponsored by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association Foundation. The community audi-

ence viewed five presentations and provided feedback.

The community panel included: Carlene Amwoza, Morgan Zinkie and Ariel Monsivais, Jr. from Abri Credit Union; Karen Grandinetti representing Waddell and Reed Financial Services; Jeff Pierson,financial planner and JTHS board of education president; and Ilandus Hampton, JTHS Assistant superintendent for business services.

The presentation relied on support from a variety of sources such as the Stock Market Game, Invest Write, the JTHS/ Abri Credit Union Reality Fair, PBL, and the National Association for Retirement Plan Participants.

Today, let’s look at the winners of the 2015 Richard Freeman Junior Deal of the Year from the International Bridge Press Association.

The deal occurred during a four-day training visit to the Czech Republic by two pairs from the England under-20 team, Laura Covill-Stephen Kennedy and Freddie Illingworth-Ben Norton.

This auction was produced by Illingworth (North) and Norton. When West opened one diamond, and North sensibly overcalled two clubs (to make a takeout double with only a doubleton spade and such a skewed hand would not have been wise), South’s two-heart advance was forcing for one round (an agreement that I like).

Then the jump to five diamonds was Exclusion Key Card Blackwood.

It agreed hearts, indicated a diamond void, and asked for key cards excluding the diamond ace. South’s six-club reply (step four) indicated two key cards and the heart queen.

Now came the key agreement: six diamonds invited the grand slam and asked for help in clubs.

Although the singleton was not as good as the king, South anticipated being able to establish his partner’s suit with ruffs. So he jumped to seven hearts.

South won the first trick with dummy’s spade jack, drew one round of trumps, and claimed 13 tricks: three spades, six hearts, one diamond, one club and two diamond ruffs in the dummy.

But even if West had led, say, a trump, declarer would have had no trouble ruffing down the club king.

Their homework had really paid off.

42 Bone-weakening osteoporosis is a risk for some older men Note to Readers: This column is an update of one that originally appeared in October 2012.

Dear Dr. K: My doctor

says I need to worry about osteoporosis. I’m a man in my 60s. Doesn’t osteoporosis affect mostly women?

Dear Reader: Osteoporosis is a disease that weakens bones. You’re correct that women are more likely than men to develop osteoporosis, but that doesn’t mean men don’t have to worry about it. In fact, about 2 million men in the United States have osteoporosis.

There are two main reasons men are less vulnerable than women to bone loss. First, men start out with bigger bones and greater bone density.

Second, men generally have high levels of androgens, hormones that increase bone density.

When men under age 75 develop osteoporosis, it’s often because of treatment with certain drugs that cause osteoporosis as a side effect or because they have other medical conditions that weaken bone. When osteoporosis is caused by a treatment or another underlying condition, it is called secondary osteoporosis. For example: Medications: Glucocorticoid use is one of the most common causes of secondary osteoporosis. Glucocorticoids are steroids used to reduce inflammation caused by asthma, arthritis and a variety of other conditions. Anticonvulsants (medicines used to control seizures) and certain cancer treatments also increase risk.

Underlying Medical Conditions: Abnormally

low sex hormone levels can increase the risk of osteoporosis in men (and women). Men and women produce both estrogen (the “female” sex hormone) and testosterone (the “male” sex hormone. Of course, women make a lot more estrogen than men, and men make a lot more

Both estrogen and androgen build bone.

Levels of both of these hormones decline as people age, and this can cause bone loss. When men have very low androgen levels (or a rare condition in which men’s tissues don’t respond to androgens normally) it is called hypogonadism.

In addition to hypogonadism, other disorders also can damage bone health: Type 1 diabetes, epilepsy, hyperthyroidism, multiple sclerosis and many others.

Other risk factors particularly relevant to men include: • Heavy Alcohol Use. Heavy drinking can damage bone health by reducing bone mass.

• Smoking. Many years of smoking encourage the thinning of bones.

• Inactivity. Our bones respond to being challenged by becoming denser and stronger.

The bones of the legs, hips and spine are strengthened by weight-bearing activities, and by exercises like walking or running.

• Gastrectomy. This operation, in which part or all of the stomach is removed, can reduce the amount of calcium the body absorbs. That, in turn, causes some thinning of the bones.

Some men (like some women) are more vulnerable to getting osteoporosis, but we don’t understand all of the genetics involved. Also, people of Caucasian or Asian ethnicity are at higher risk than those of African background.

Dear Abby: I’m a gay man in my late 40s who has worked for 10 years in the public school system with young adults and kids with special needs. I have done everything from changing preschoolers’ diapers, to tutoring, travel training and teaching life skills to older children. In the process, I have encountered my share of cooperation, defiance, failure and success.

When speaking with family, friends or strangers about their parenting, I sometimes share my experiences. This is usually accepted and even encouraged, but occasionally I am put in my place by a parent who feels I must be told that what I’ve done “isn’t the same as being a parent.”

Some even go so far as to imply that I should remain silent, as I have nothing of a parenting nature to offer.

I would think that making everyone feel included would be more important than official parent status, especially when discussing similar experiences. So what’s the best way to handle this? I have no kids of my own; my students are all I have to share stories about. Should I just dummy up? – Sort Of Childless In San

how she would feel if she had agreed to let Carly stay with her while her parents were out of town, and Carly left to attend a sleepover birthday party from which Jenny had been excluded. I’ll bet she’d feel as left out and hurt as Carly would.

The plans have been made and they shouldn’t be changed. However, depending upon how important it is to the birthday girl to have your daughter there, she might be willing to extend an invitation to Carly if the situation was explained to her. Suggest Jenny give it a try.

P.S. The lesson you are trying to teach your daughter is important, so stick to your guns. I’m sorry your husband doesn’t step up to the plate, instead of making you the bad guy. He seems to have forgotten that parenting is supposed to be a team sport.
