Electric Park Main Entrance – Plainfield The emergence of trolley parks in the last decade of the 19th century and the first few years of the 20th century coincided with the rise of both electric and railway companies. Not only was the United States experiencing rapid electrification since the late 1880s, but the railway companies were beginning to construct new interurban rail lines around urban centers.

Most electric parks were owned by electric companies and trolley companies, which often had one or more lines that transported workers and shoppers between downtown areas of the various cities and residential and industrial locations.

In 1904, the Aurora, Plainfield, & Joliet Railway established a streetcar line with a popular 20-acre camping resort in Plainfield known as Electric Park.

When constructed, Electric Park provided the trolley line excursionist an ideal summer resort spot.

Built along the banks of the DuPage River near Lockport and James Streets, the attractions included camping cabins, a large auditorium, a dance hall, a refreshment pavilion, a theater, bowling alley, swimming pool, glider swings, baseball games and long strolling pathways around the park.

throughout the park. Another popular water activity at Electric Park was boating on the DuPage River. Not only could adventurous patrons rent rowboats and paddleboats for a nominal fee, but large groups could climb aboard the Mary Lee for a paddlewheel boat pleasure ride up and down the river.

Located on the west side of the river, the ever-popular toboggan slide, with its bathhouse at the base and the 150 steps to the top, entertained many young visitors each

year as they enjoyed a steep slide on a toboggan into the water on a hot summer day.

A popular attraction at Electric Park was aerial acrobat Harry Darnell of Chicago.

Considered by many to be one of the most noted trick balloonists in America, the 38-year-old Darnell performed his acrobatics for large crowds all over Midwest.

Having performed his trapeze act on a hot air balloon more than 300 times previously, Darnell lost his grip and fell nearly 700 feet to his

death in the DuPage River on July 26, 1911. The daredevil was attempting his hazardous “Great Swing” trick from the trapeze bar below his balloon when he fell. Nearly 2,000 picnickers, mostly members of the Merchants’ Association of Joliet, witnessed the catastrophe. Darnell was interred in the Plainfield Township Cemetery shortly after the event.

The Electric Park closed in the early 1920s, when buses and automobiles replaced the trolley lines through the area.

Fairmont School District 89 making progress

About this series: This is the first story in a three-day series exploring the revitalization of Fairmont School District 89 through financial reform, academic growth and community engagement.

LOCKPORT TOWNSHIP – Sonya Whitaker said she had to make tough decisions about Fairmont School District 89.

Six years ago, she became the leader of the small school district, which has on average about 300 students – kindergarten through eighth grade – and is located in a poor area of unincorporated Will County between Joliet and Lockport.

Typically, about 90 percent of the district population is low-income, and the student mobility rate tends to be more than twice the state average.

Students were struggling academically when Whitaker came on board as superintendent in 2010, but the district also had challenges when it came to finances. In fiscal 2010, the state gave the district the second worst financial rating possible: early warning.

This led Whitaker – under the direction of the Board of Education – to do what was needed to improve finances, while at the same time focusing on improving student achievement.

“We had to make the tough calls. It’s hard to make the tough calls when you have to raise academic performance at the same time,” she said.

Since 2010, the district’s state financial rating advanced to the highest possible, and district leaders have worked to improve student learning with more parent and community involvement.

Whitaker’s leadership has not come without controversy, as the district concluded a legal battle with a former em-

But for other residents and school officials, Whitaker has put the district back on track. Whitaker said the district has balanced its budget every year since she became superintendent.

“I feel she’s been doing a good job getting the district where it should be,” said Charles Travis, a longtime District 89 board member.

“Some people might have different opinions.”

Difficult decisions

When Whitaker became superintendent for District 89,

the district was deficit spending and had a credit rating near junk status.

It also was operating on an accrual basis of accounting that bases long-term plans, staffing and expenses on state funding that is not guaranteed, she said.

“It was just after a few months on the job that I learned that we did not have enough money to make payroll,” she said.

Now the district is on a cash basis of accounting.

The first decision Whitaker said she had to make was to go a full year without an early childhood program because

Village looking to add more development

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Plainfield Mayor Michael Collins is pleased with the progress the village has made in commercial and residential development during the past several years.

But he said much more is to come in 2016.

“We have a couple large projects we’re working with,” Collins said.

Commercial and residential development, filling out empty lots downtown and continued progress on Route 30 construction will be some key goals for Plainfield’s village administration in 2016.

Village staff will continue to work with developers and prospective business owners in the new year to increase its

commercial profile.

“I can’t get into specifics, but it amounts to $240 million in commercial development with the village,” Collins said, noting that the village will continue expanding to the north.

Collins “We’re just hoping the state comes to [a budget] agreement so that it doesn’t become an impasse to our future growth,” Collins said.

Unfortunately for Plainfield, one of the key cogs in the village’s planning efforts will be missing.

Garrigan resigned to take a similar position in the village of Antioch in hopes to help grow that town as he helped Plainfield during the past 15 years.

That makes filling the hole left by Garrigan an important task for the village in 2016, Collins said.

“He’ll be sorely missed,” Collins said. “We already have made contact to try to fill the position. Internal hiring will also be looked at, and a hiring agency outside the village will assist us.”

Residential developments are on the horizon as well, Collins said.

Lots in the renovated Opera House block are being filled, and long-vacant properties such as the old Baci’s building and government building are being developed into restaurants.

But Collins wants that to continue.

“There are a couple other fronts that we vision are going to be filled,” he said.

Projects in downtown Plainfield have taken root.

The old Trolley Barn building at Lockport Street and Route 30 The section of Route 30 that Main Street has received a complete makeover to house was closed between Route 59

and Renwick Road was opened just in time for the holiday season. But construction on the road is continuing south of the road to Interstate 55.

While it continues to be a source of frustration for motorists, Director of Public Works Allen Persons said its work is ahead of schedule.

“The final completion date is planned for summer 2017,” Persons said. “But hopefully, most of it will be done by the end of next year.”

Patching and engineering studies farther up north on Route 30 will take place at the intersections with 127th Street, 119th Street and Heggs Road, Persons said.

Another key project for 2016, Persons said, will be the pedestrian bridge crossing the DuPage River south of the village hall, connecting the DuPage River Trail to Renwick Community Park.

Development, police/public works resources eyed

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com SHOREWOOD – Shorewood Mayor Richard Chapman thinks the police and public works departments do a great job and service for the village.

But Chapman said it is important to continue to provide both departments with the best resources for the job in 2016.

Chapman’s other goals for the village in the new year include expanding the commercial center of the village at Route 59 and Route 52, especially to the west of the intersection near Towne Center.

“We’ve put funds into our police training program to keep all the police up to date on training on sensitivity and other things,” Chapman said.

Public works crews could receive tablet computers in all of their vehicles.

“It’s something that we have to work on continuously in order to get it established,” Chapman said.

But the village also needs to develop more economic interest in the area, especially on Route 52 from River Road past Wynstone Boulevard.

“Route 52 is going to be a major east-west highway,”

Chapman said, noting that future plans have it being a fourlane road.

It is hoped that highly anticipated plans to expand Wynstone Boulevard north to Black Road in 2016 will help increase the access to Towne Center.

A focus on developing Towne Center commercially is a main reason why Chapman pushed hard to approve the controversial Lenny’s Gas-n-Wash gas station and

car wash, currently under construction at the southwest corner of Route 52 and River Road, this year.

“That [land] has been sitting there vacant forever,” Chapman said. “That development still has five to six lots left on it to fill.”

Village Trustee Dan Warren said he is looking forward to the gas station and car wash becoming an anchor for more development in the area.

“There is an opportunity for the area there to be developed more,” Warren said.

Warren also was looking forward to Noodles and Company occupying the old Dominick’s gas station area, and more business to come to the Anderson’s property at the northwest corner of Route 52 and Route 59.

JJC working to finish 3 major projects by 2017 The HERALD–NEWS JOLIET – Joliet Junior College staff are at work to complete three major projects by 2017.

JJC officials are focused on finishing and opening City Center Campus in downtown Joliet, expanding the Romeoville satellite campus and constructing the Multipurpose Facility at its main campus, according to a news release.

The exterior of the six-story City Center Campus building has been finished since spring 2014, and crews are focused on interior work. Underground and rough plumbing, ductwork installation and sprinkler piping at the sixth floor are complete.

Now, crews are working on framing of metal stud walks and partitions, installation of exhaust fan curbs and other projects.

The Romeoville campus is being completed to meet increasing student enrollment demands. Crews have finished retention pond and mass excavation work and utility rerouting. They are working on interior underground plumbing, hydronic piping and installing concrete curbs in parking lots.

Mass earth and concrete foundation work has been completed for the Multipurpose Facility, which will have space for sports activities and graduation ceremonies.

Crews are focused on masonry block walls, interior underground plumbing and interior electrical work.

VIEWS Kris Stadalsky reach out to those in need, and one of the ways is to keep giving back in our own communities.

I spoke with the heads of several area food pantries, from Joliet to Channahon to Minooka. Every month, the Living Manna Food Pantry out of Living Stones Church in Channahon serves 450 to 500 families. That’s 2,000 people.

The Minooka Bible Church food pantry provides 200 families with food twice a month.

The faces of those who need help have changed, said Joe Pospischil, pastor of Living Stones Church.

They are people who have

worked their whole lives and no longer have a job, the elderly who have no one to care for them, or families hit by tragedies.

MorningStar Mission in Joliet served more than 162,000 meals in 2014, Business Manager Jackie Kinney said. And it provides a myriad of other services such as warming and cooling centers, men’s and women’s programs, tutoring for kids, counseling and sleeping quarters.

What these places have in common is the need for volunteer help.

People, organizations, schools and businesses are generous with food and personal items all year long.

If there’s an overwhelming need, the Boy Scouts, for instance, will hold a food drive. Local grocers provide

good food that doesn’t move quickly off the shelves, local gardeners bring in excess crops, and schools may hold collections of personal and household products.

These are the mainstays for the service organizations, and those who run them are full of gratitude for the continued kindness of the communities.

But it also takes manpower, woman power and kid power to run the programs that help out our neighbors who, for whatever reason, have fallen on hard times.

To provide for the regular families, Minooka Bible Church relies on at least 40 volunteers a month. Living Manna uses 12 to 15 every Tuesday and Saturday when food is distributed, and that includes behind-the-scenes jobs.

There is always some place for people to volunteer, Kinney said, whether it’s serving food at MorningStar, sorting clothing in the thrift shops or mentoring children or adults. Even spending time with a child who needs homework help or playing a game to break up the monotony of a day in a shelter does wonders for everyone’s heart and soul.

The thing we have going for us is pulling together, sharing our talents and helping each other. With that in common, we can weather the worst situations.

Let’s make 2016 another year of helping out our fellow man.

This is my last column of 2015. It’s been a difficult year at best – war, violence in our communities and around the world, and strange weather patterns all over the place. It makes me pause and contemplate the meaning.

The one resounding thing in all of this chaos that gives me hope is how people step up to help others. Whether it’s a show of love and support of crowds holding candles and praying after a terror attack, or boxes of food, water and clothing for tornado victims who have lost everything.

No matter what happens, it’s imperative to continue showing our humanity for one another. It’s what sets us apart from the terrorists, the gangs and the elements out of our control.

LOCKPORT TWP. – A Joliet man was pronounced dead Saturday after being in a rollover vehicle incident, the Will County Coroner’s Office said.

Joseph O. Essary, 33, was ejected from the vehicle he was riding in at 7:21 p.m. Saturday at Route 171 and Nobes Avenue in Lockport Township, according to Illinois State Police District 5.

State police said Essary was

one of two people involved in the accident who were transported to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, where the coroner’s office stated he was pronounced dead at 9:14 p.m.

The final cause of death will be determined at a later date.

Charges have been filed against the driver in the incident, but state police were unable to disclose the specific charges or the driver’s identity.

Cuts helped school district boost state financial recognition • FAIRMONT

The second decision was increasing class sizes, which were about 13 to 15 students in almost every grade level except middle school.

“I made the observation that, after the first year, we began to slowly increase class sizes in order to free up dollars,” she said.

Another decision was the elimination of program materials that did not give a return on investment to students’ education. This was done on a collaborative level, Whitaker said.

“I didn’t eliminate any programs on my own. I had to engage in one-on-one and

small-group conversations with the teachers – tough conversations – about whether or not we were getting a return on the financial investment of the program materials being used,” she said.

Even though the district was making cuts, it did manage to have something it didn’t have before: a music program.

It was developed in three years; and the music teacher,

Kimberly Minarich, became a Golden Apple finalist.

The district also has managed to provide every eighthgrade student with a laptop, and Whitaker plans to roll out that initiative to the seventhand sixth-grade levels as well.

‘She’s got finances in order’ District 89 achieved financial recognition from the Illinois State Board of

Education in fiscal year 2013 and has maintained it since.

Its Standard & Poor’s credit rating also was upgraded this year from A to A+.

Even with these successes, one challenge on the horizon for the district is the need for about $3.7 million in facility repairs. District officials plan to earmark funds from the tax levy to pay for those improvements.

Joseph Ryan, a longtime District 89 board member and current vice president, said the superintendent before Whitaker, Doris Langon, was not a leader and the district was overspending under her administration.

Former Dist. 86 assistant superintendent was known to be organized and thorough

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Jennifer Johnson worked as a principal at several schools in Joliet Public Schools District 86. She recently recalled a leadership team meeting presided over

by Charles Young, then the district’s assistant superintendent.

Known for his keen articulation, Charles used a word that stumped Jennifer. She waited until after the meeting to admit her ignorance to the other teachers, only to learn they didn’t understand the meaning either, Jennifer said.

It wasn’t just students, Jennifer felt, who benefited from Charles’ expertise.

“He was the consummate educator in my mind,” Jennifer said. “He kept you on your toes. You’d have to go in for evaluations and – I’m not going to lie, I was always nervous. … He was very organized and always wanted us to follow a plan of action.”

Jessie Young of Joliet, Charles’ wife and high school sweetheart, said Charles grew up in Missouri as the second of four boys. He had a passion for reading and helping children that began at an early age, and never quit.

“He liked to read about other countries,” said Jessie, who taught kindergarten and then first grade at T.E. Culbertson Elementary School from 1985 until her retirement in 1996. “He helped the grandchildren with their reading and read to them at bedtime.”

Jessie said Charles received his bachelor’s degree from Lincoln University in Missouri and his master’s and doctorate degrees from

Charles taught grade school in Missouri and was principal of a junior high school in Urbana-Champaign before moving to Joliet and serving as assistant superintendent at District 86 from 1984 to 2000.

Louise Coleman, who was superintendent of the district from 1990 to 2000, said Charles was an outstanding educator and was very caring, very intelligent and extremely knowledgeable in regard to improving schools and student achievement.

In the early 1990s, Charles had the foresight to study the district’s enrollment and prepare for an emerging Hispanic population, Louise said.

“He wanted to make sure the Joliet grade schools were reading to receive the students when they arrived,” she said.

Louise said she and Charles had common goals and worked well together.

“He was a thorough

person,” Louise said. “He crossed every ‘t’ and dotted every ‘i.’ He wanted to make sure we were doing the right things. … He was a great man and helped change the landscape of the Joliet grade schools.”

But Charles shared his expertise and wisdom beyond District 86. Thomas L. Jones of Joliet knew Charles as a fellow Christian brother at St. Mark Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Joliet and a fellow fraternity brother through Kappa Alpha Psi. Thomas said Charles was an exceptional man, one who applied his knowledge, skills and innovation at St. Mark’s, as well as at the school district. Charles helped evaluate existing systems in the church and then formulated a strategic plan to develop new projects, Thomas said.

“He was a no-nonsense person, but he also provided insights to different situations,” Thomas said. “I’m going to miss him as a friend and mentor.”

Thomas said that when he became assistant superintendent of programs at the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice, Charles guided him through the process, offering information on being a good manager, as well as being a good man.

“I could call upon him any time. I felt very comfortable with him,” Thomas said. “He provided insight on various issues that men face in dayto-day life.”

Charles was 81 when he died Aug. 15.

By DAVID WARREN and REESE DUNKLIN The Associated Press GARLAND, Texas – At least 11 people died and dozens were injured in strong tornadoes that swept through the Dallas area and caused substantial damage this weekend, while 13 people died in flooding in the Midwest.

It was the latest of a succession of powerful weather events across the country, from heavy snow in New Mexico, west Texas and the Oklahoma Panhandle to flooding in parts of the Plains and Midwest. Days of tumultuous weather have led to 43 deaths overall – those in Texas, plus five in Illinois, eight in Missouri and 19 in the Southeast.

The full extent of damage from Saturday’s storms along a nearly 40-mile stretch near Dallas came into clear focus. Local officials estimated as many as 1,450 homes were damaged or destroyed.

Vehicles were mangled, power lines fell and trees were

toppled. Heavy rain, wind and falling temperatures hampered cleanup efforts Sunday afternoon.

“This is a huge impact on our community, and we’re all suffering,” Garland Police Lt. Pedro Barineau said of the suburb about 20 miles northeast of Dallas, where eight people died, 15 were injured and about 600 structures, mostly single-family homes, were damaged.

The weather service said an EF4 tornado, which is the second-most powerful with winds up to more than 200 mph, hit the community at about 6:45 p.m. Saturday.

It was near the intersection of Interstate 30 and George Bush Turnpike, a major route in the region. At least three people who died were found in vehicles, said Barineau, who also noted that some cars appeared to be thrown from the interstate, although it wasn’t known whether that was how the people found in the vehicles died.

The only part of the house that appeared to be spared was the master bathroom, where her brother-in-law took shelter Saturday night.

He was the only one at home and told her he had just enough time to get himself and his dogs into the bathroom.

“It was worse than I thought,” Guzman said, comparing the scene to the photos he had sent Saturday.

The destruction in Garland was so overwhelming that Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins declared the city a disaster within mere minutes of seeing the toll firsthand.

“I don’t declare local disasters lightly,” Jenkins said. “But I looked at the scene for 10 minutes, spoke to the incident commander and then called the lawyers to bring the paperwork.”

Jenkins said in a statement Sunday night that as many as 600 homes were damaged in Rowlett.

Carolina (14-1) got the ball with 90 seconds left and no timeouts remaining. Newton completed a 19-yard pass to Corey Brown on first down but fumbled when stripped by Vic Beasley Jr. on the following play. Adrian Clayborn recovered for the Falcons, wrapping up the win.

Matt Ryan threw for 306 yards and one touchdown for the Falcons (8-7), and Devonta Freeman ran for 73 yards with a touchdown.

CARDINALS 38, PACKERS 8:

At Glendale, Arizona sacked Aaron Rodgers eight times and returned two of his fumbles for touchdowns to clinch a first-round playoff bye.

Carson Palmer threw for 257 yards and two touchdowns for Arizona (13-2).

ning back LeSean McCoy. Rookie linebacker A.J. Tarpley had an interception and sealed the win by forcing Lucky Whitehead to fumble on the kickoff return that followed Gillislee’s touchdown.

Buffalo (7-8) snapped a twogame skid and won for just the second time in six games. The Cowboys (4-11) lost in quarterback Kellen Moore’s first career start.

LIONS 32, 49ERS 17: At Detroit, Matthew Stafford threw for two touchdowns, including one to Calvin Johnson early in the fourth quarter for Detroit.

The Lions (6-9) have won five of their last seven games, perhaps giving coach Jim Caldwell a chance to keep his job for a third season. The 49ers (4-11) have lost three straight and five of six under first-year coach Jim Tomsula.

RAMS 23, SEAHAWKS 17: At Seattle, Todd Gurley scored on a 2-yard TD run with 10:34 left, Akeem Ayers returned a fumble 45 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter as St Louis ended Seattle’s fivegame winning streak.

St. Louis swept the season series from the Seahawks (96) having won, 34-31, in overtime in Week 1. The Rams (7-8) flustered quarterback Russell Wilson.

Gurley rushed for 85 yards on 19 carries. Case Keenum won his third straight start for the Rams, completing 14 of 23 passes for 103 yards and a 28-yard touchdown pass to Kenny Britt in the second quarter.

SAINTS 38, JAGUARS 27: At New Orleans, Drew Brees passed for 412 yards and three touchdowns despite his injured right foot.

Running back Tim Hightower, who missed the previous three seasons because of a knee injury and subsequent complications, consolidated his recent resurgence with 122 yards and two touchdowns rushing for New Orleans (6-9).

Blake Bortles passed for 368 yards and four TDs for Jacksonville (5-10).

Hard-to-figure-out Bears surpass last season’s win total

Offensively, the Bears had their second-best day of the season running the ball, with 174 yards on 39 carries, accounting for their huge time-of-possession advantage.

Jay Cutler was extremely efficient, completing 20 of 27 passes for 156 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. He also had two big scrambles for 21 yards.

So what did we learn?

Jeremy Langford is ready to take on the starting run-

ning back job if necessary.

There is nothing wrong with Matt Forte, who had 11 carries for 54 yards – with a long of 16 yards – and three catches for 23 yards. But once he went down in the third quarter with an apparent back injury, Langford took over and finished the game with 83 rushing yards with an average of 4.4 a clip.

Zach Miller has become a good tight end and clearly was Cutler’s security blanket in this one with eight targets and seven catches for 69 yards.

Although he is 31 years old, Miller sat out all of the past

three seasons with injuries, and there still is plenty of tread left on his tires.

But he is not a great replacement for Martellus Bennett, who still is the superior player. Miller is the perfect complement, and irrespective of Bennett’s various quirks, the Bears need to bring both back next season and will be one of the best teams in the league at the position if they do.

The Bears must find at least one new starting offensive lineman next season, perhaps more, but at least one.

These Bears have become the ultimate NFL contrarians.

Coming out of Green Bay on Thanksgiving night, they were riding as high as they had been in years, with no obvious explanation as to how and why they got there.

So rather than ride the wave, just when you were starting to believe, they began marching backward and getting worse a week at a time with successive losses at home against San Francisco and Washington, and then appearing to hit rock bottom last week in Minneapolis.

Week 16 in Tampa offered almost nothing but bad matchups for the Bears, but all they did was turn them around, one after another, to come away 26-21 victors over the Bucs on Sunday in one of their more impressive defensive performances of the season.

Is Tampa Bay an offensive juggernaut? No, it definitely is not.

But the Bucs did enter Sunday’s game seventh in the NFL in total offense, fourth running the ball, seventh in first downs and 10th in thirddown conversions, and the Bears took most of that away, holding them to 346 yards of total offense before a 43-yard “Hail Mary” on the secondto-last play of the game, only 104 yards on the ground and perhaps most importantly,

Patrick Omameh have shared the right guard spot, and Omameh is not stout enough blocking for the run, and Ducasse, who is a mauler in the ground game, is a nightmare in pass protection.

There is absolutely no reason to re-sign Shea McClellin. Without him Sunday, the Bears had their fifth-best game of the year stopping the run, and they had their second-best game of the season without him in San Diego.

Although the other two games he missed against Detroit and Minnesota were just their 12th- and 11th-best games this season on run “D,” the Vikings do have the league’s leading rusher in Adrian Peterson.

John Timu is far more physical than McClellin ever has been, and even Christian Jones was more active at the point of attack than he has been at any point this season partnered with McClellin.

Safety Adrian Amos had a third straight shaky outing, but Harold Jones-Quartey at times seemed to be everywhere and definitely earned a longer look in next week’s finale against Detroit.

Finally, and maybe even most importantly, the Bucs marked the Bears’ sixth win of the year, officially stamping them as an improved ball club over last season’s 5-11 Phil Emery/Marc Trestman disaster.

Arrow keeps pointing up for Romeoville

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – The young Romeoville boys basketball team is growing up.

The Spartans beat Oak Forest, 67-55, Saturday night in the final opening-round game at the Romeoville Christmas Classic. And, it wasn’t that close.

Romeoville (5-4) opened a 37-23 halftime lead and led by as much as 24 points in the second half before the Bengals (44) made the final score more respectable against the Spartans’ reserves. Romeoville advanced to Monday’s 6:30 p.m. quarterfinal against Glenbard South.

“We played good basketball,” Spartans coach Marc Howard said. “We’re taking steps in the right direction.

We’re playing smarter. We limited our turnovers when the regular unit was in the game and we made them speed up.

“But we have to be better defensively inside, and we have to rebound better and communicate better defensively. That will be important against Glenbard South, which is a big team.”

Romeoville shot 58.5 percent from the field, the result of excellent passing and getting everyone involved. Senior forward Matt Cappelletti led the way, hitting 5 of 7 shots and 6 of

8 free throws for a team-high 17 points to go with a team-leading seven rebounds.

Freshman Mike Salter chipped in 11 points and sophomore guards DeAndre Heckard and London Stamps added 10 and nine, respectively.

“He [Cappelletti] is amazing,” Stamps said. “This is the second year I’ve played with him. We’re more familiar with each other. We trust each other.”

“Trust is the word we use for our family,” Howard said.

SUBMITTED REPORTS COUNTRY CLUB HILLS – Joliet Catholic Academy’s girls basketball team won its first two games at the Hillcrest Holiday Classic to earn a spot in Monday’s semifinals.

The Angels opened with a 51-24 victory over Stagg and then captured a 64-61 win over Sandburg. Those triumphs earned JCA a matchup against the winner of the quarterfinal game between Proviso West and Thornton in a 7:30 p.m. semifinal contest. Rich East meets up with Seton Academy in the earlier semifinal. The tournament wraps up on Tuesday.

In the win over Sandburg, Nicole Ekhomu (six assists, four steals) and Andriana Acosta (10 rebounds) led the way with 19 points apiece.

Mia Farrell (five steals) added 12 points while Kaitlyn Williams (four assists, four steals) scored 10 points.

Against Stagg, Farrell (five rebounds, three steals) led the way with 21 points. Ekhomu (six assists, nine steals) added 13 points and Acosta (five rebounds) collected six points.

Rich South Big Dipper

Bolingbrook, Lincoln-Way Central and Joliet Central

all earned spots in Monday’s quarterfinals at Rich South following wins on Saturday.

The area is assured of at least one semifinalist in the event since the Raiders and Knights meet in a 4 p.m. game on Monday to kick off the quarterfinal round. That winner plays a 7 p.m. game on Tuesday against either Leo or Thornton.

Joliet Central plays the University of Chicago Lab School on Monday at 7 p.m. in the third quarterfinal contest.

If the Steelmen advance, they would meet either Rich Central or Marian Catholic in an 8:30 p.m. contest on Tuesday.

Marseilles Holiday Tournament

Plenty of local teams still are in the mix at Marseilles after opening with victories in Saturday’s opening round.

Gardner-South Wilmington meets Putnam County in a 3:30 p.m. quarterfinal on Monday while Reed-Custer faces Leland-Earlville in the next contest at 5 p.m.

On the bottom of the quarterfinal bracket, Seneca goes up against Flanagan-Cornell at 6:30 p.m. while Dwight battles Marquette in the final game at 8 p.m. Semifinals are at 6:30 and 8 p.m. on Tuesday with the championship set for 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

When Howard talks about the young Spartans maturing, Salter is atop that list.

“Mike is growing up,” Howard said. “He is playing three or four positions, the 1 through the 4, off the bench. He’s growing in his understanding on the court.”

Another of the young Spartans who is progressing is sophomore forward Dontia Johnson. Key against Oak Forest also was junior forward Robert Johnson, who came off the bench midway through the first quarter and hit three straight shots to help Romeo-

ville open a 20-11 lead. The Bengals never were closer than six points again.

“Our trust is up a lot,” Cappelletti said. “Our young guys do a great job distributing the ball around. And like you saw tonight, when we all play defense, we can lock it down.”

The Spartans would like nothing better than to win the tournament they are hosting.

“We want to bring home our first holiday championship,” Cappelletti said. “It would be great to do where our families and fans can see us. We know we will see good teams the rest of the tournament, but that’s what we want. We want to be pushed.”

Slumping Hossa returns to lineup

By MARK LAZERUS mlazerus@suntimes.com CHICAGO – Marian Hossa has been on the other side of this. During the 2002-03 season, it seemed like every shot he took had a chance to go in. Pucks went in from sharp angles, off fortunate bounces, through quirky deflections. By the time the season ended, he had a whopping 45 goals, still his career high, and a staggering 19.7 shooting percentage.

Basically, he couldn’t miss.

Now, this. He still usually is in the right place at the right time. Still creating chances.

Still getting off good shots. The puck just won’t go in. Pucks are bouncing off flailing goalies, taking unfortunate bounces, being deflected just wide or just high. Through 31 games entering Sunday night’s game against the Carolina Hurricanes, he has only five goals on 99 shots (second on the team behind only Patrick Kane), and an unthinkable 5.1 shooting percentage, far below his career average of 12.4.

Statistical probability suggests that number will rise, and the pucks will start going in. But Hossa’s weary of waiting.

“I feel like I get so many chances,” he said. “Just the finishing is not what I expect, obviously. From that many chances, I expect myself to be more productive. It’s definitely frustrating. I’m just trying to stay positive [and] keep working hard. Overall, I feel good. Just the production’s not there.”

Hossa returned to the lineup Sunday after missing two games with an upper-body injury. With the benefit of the four-day Christmas break, Hossa – who turns 37 next month –

Yes, he’s trying to figure out why the goals aren’t coming.

But no, he’s not dwelling on it. You don’t become one of the best overall players in the league for nearly two decades without a little patience and a lot of perspective.

Hossa went through a similar funk last season, which he finished with a career-low 8.9 shooting percentage. Through the first four months of the season, he had only 10 goals, before erupting for six goals in a three-game span in early February and finishing the season with a respectable 22.

“I don’t try to analyze it too much, because I think that’s the worst thing you can do, just worry about it too much,” he said. “Definitely, it’s a little frustrating, but I try to stay positive and keep having fun.

As long as I’m skating well, the chances are coming. The chemistry is getting better on our line, so that’s a good sign.”

That might be the most encouraging thing. After going through a half-dozen left wings in the first two months

of the season, Hossa and Jonathan Toews finally have what appears to be a permanent partner in Teuvo Teravainen.

Teravainen has four goals this month, and Toews has three as he emerges from his own slow start.

Hossa wasn’t shy about his desire for a fixed line, and now he’s got it.

“It definitely would be nice if we win some games and stay on the same line,” he said.

“That would help the chemistry to build.”

Of course, part of what makes Hossa so valuable is how good he is away from the puck. Coach Joel Quenneville has had few complaints about Hossa’s game, despite the lack of goals.

“He does a lot of good things,” Quenneville said. “If the production isn’t quite at that level, I still think there’s other parts of his game that make his overall complete game pretty effective.”

That said, Hossa’s not some fourth-line checking winger.

He’s a goal-scorer, with 491 goals in his career. And it’s taking a lot longer to get to 500 than he would like.

The analysis further showed that aspirin was most effective against gastrointestinal cancers.

In particular, pancreatic, colorectal and esophageal cancers showed the largest benefit.

The benefit of aspirin was similar in men and women, and in smokers and non-smokers. On the other hand, older people benefited more than younger people.

Volunteers who took aspirin for the longest amount of time had the greatest protection against cancer death. And a daily dose of just 81 milligrams a day (one “baby” aspirin) was as effective as much higher doses. That’s the same low dose taken for heart attack prevention.

So far, so good. But this is where it gets complicated. Like any other medicine, aspirin can have side effects. Bleeding is the most important. Bleeding in the gut -- such as from an ulcer in the stomach, or from a leaky blood vessel (called an “AV malformation”) in the intestine -- can cause major blood loss. More dangerous is sudden bleeding in the brain. While such serious bleeding is very unusual, particularly in people taking low doses of aspirin, it can happen.

With virtually every type of treatment, you need to balance the good it will do against the harm it may cause. I don’t think we know enough about that balance yet to recommend that most people take a regular daily aspirin to prevent cancer.

But if ongoing research continues in a positive direction, that may change.

Dear Dr. K: I read that aspirin might help to prevent cancer. Is there anything to this idea?

Dear Reader: Open any medicine cabinet in America and you’re likely to find a bottle of aspirin.

Aspirin has been on the market for more than 110 years. It’s an old standby for fighting fever, quieting inflammation and reducing pain. For some, it can help prevent a heart attack or stroke. And growing research points to a possible new benefit for this old friend: reducing the risk of dying from cancer.

Aspirin is one of a group of medicines known as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Other NSAIDs include ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) and naproxen (Aleve).

Aspirin works by inhibiting two enzymes, COX-1 and COX-2. It’s aspirin’s effect on COX-2 that comes into play with cancer prevention. COX-2 triggers the production of chemicals that cause fever, trigger inflammation in joints and other tissues, and aggravate pain. By inhibiting COX-2, aspirin fights inflammation, pain and fever.

The same COX-2 enzymes that provoke pain, inflammation and fever may have a role in promoting the growth and spread of certain cancers.

Of course, COX-2 is far from the only thing that contributes to the wild growth of cancer cells. But scientists have found that many of the most aggressive colon cancers have unusually high levels of COX-2. So do many prostate cancers.

An analysis of eight high-quality, randomized trials looked at whether taking a daily aspirin could reduce the risk of dying from cancer. The trials covered 25,570 people who had taken aspirin every day for at least four years. In these study subjects, daily aspirin reduced the risk of dying

Dear Abby : I’m a 20-yearold college student. I have never dated anyone besides my current boyfriend, “Cody.” He’s my first-ever boyfriend. I met him in high school, but we ran into each other in college and quickly began a relationship. We’re now into our third year together.

We have professed our love for each other. He never said “I love you” to any of his past girlfriends, and I’m happy he said it to me.
