Old Central School – Lockport Lockport is a town rich in history with the first settlers arriving in the area in 1830.

Soon after settlers arrived, school classes began in a log cabin on what is now Division Street, near Grandview Avenue.

In 1857, a three-story stone schoolhouse, designed by architect Julius Scheibe, was erected on the Public Square in town. This stone building was the first village schoolhouse and was built from limestone quarried locally and boasted a large four-sided clock tower on its roof. The first graduation commencement at the school was in June 1888, with seven graduates. A large fire destroyed the school building August 10, 1895, and classes were held in nearby churches and other buildings until a new public structure was erected.

The schoolhouse was replaced the following year with a handsome three-story Romanesque Revival structure on the same site. The new school building was built using native limestone locally quarried by architect John H. Barnes of Joliet.

Buildings of the Romanesque Revival style are most easily identified by their unique qualities, such as

pronounced round arches, cavernous entryways, window openings, and heavy, massive stone or brick construction.

Most have round towers with conical roofs, squat columns and decorative plaques with intricate or interlacing patterns.

The Romanesque style especially was suited to churches, courthouses, schools, university buildings, prisons, train stations and other public buildings.

Locally, the Romanesque Revival style can be seen in the work of architect John H. Barnes. Barnes graduated from the University of Illinois in 1888 and began his career in Colorado.

After working out west, Barnes arrived in Joliet in the early 1890s. He was typical of many new architects of the era in that he probably was more

of a self-taught builder than a professional architect.

The old Central School, which served the educational needs of the community for nearly 70 years, was considered highly innovative for the 1890s because the architect

plans placed emphasis on large interior spaces with many big windows to let in light and air.

Today, the old school building serves as the Lockport Township Government Offices and the Lockport Area Genealogical and Historical Society.

Holiday wreaths placed in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood

Shaw Media Correspondent ELWOOD – Linda and Jerome Ringl of Chicago Heights attended Wreaths Across America Day on Sunday in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood.

They came with a list of 18 veterans whose graves they would visit, place a wreath on and pray over.

The people on the list are strangers for the most part, people who reached out to the Ringls on Wreaths Across America Facebook page.

“We do it for anybody who can’t be here, or can’t bring themselves to come yet,” Linda Ringl said.

It’s Linda Ringl’s way of giving back to others. Her own brother, MSG Edgar Marts Jr., a Marine for 23 years and a member of one of the first troops to go into Afghanistan, is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

When a friend offered to place a wreath on Marts’ grave a few years ago during Wreaths Across America Day, it meant the world to Ringl.

“I thought how special that was. We decided to do it here, and we just love it.

It’s very humbling, and it’s heart-wrenching at the same time,” Ringl said through tears.

Debbie Smothers, one of the creators of Operation Care Package, which sponsors the Elwood wreath event, was thrilled at the number of people who turned out for the event, which has grown exponentially.

Cars lined bumper to bumper in all directions on Route 53 as they waited to enter the cemetery.

“I love it. I can’t even guesstimate how many people are here,” Smothers said.

However, 9,400 wreaths were ready to be laid near the graves, up from 6,500 wreaths last year, said Sean Baumgartner, cemetery director. That’s

Fire district trustees appoint businessman to board

“He is a businessman and has been in town all his

seat vacated by Mark Reynolds, who resigned to become an assistant chief in the district. The board appointed him Tuesday.

Barnes said Baish has served in leadership positions and was a firefighter in the district for five years before leaving to focus on his Plainfield-based business, Baish Excavating.

Barnes also said Baish has experience in reading budgets.

“We need another person like that on the board,” Barnes said.

Baish couldn’t be reached for comment Friday afternoon. But a profile of Baish on his business website states he serves on the executive board of the Three Rivers Construc-

tion Alliance and is the labor chairman for the Contractors Association of Grundy and Will counties.

Baish also was named 2007 member of the year of the Contractors Association and was presented in 2010 with the Richard G. Colombo Award, which recognized his personal contributions to the industry.

Quarterback, D’Arcy team up for breast cancer patient

vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – A former starting quarterback for Plainfield South High School helped throw a generous pass to an unsuspecting receiver this holiday season.

Jeff Kohl, a 2010 graduate, led a “Friday Night Lights” football fundraiser at Plainfield South games this season, raising $5,000 for cancer research and inspiring an area business owner to donate even more to a local woman with breast cancer.

Kohl bought blue jerseys with pink numbers for kids to wear during Plainfield South football games, and sold shirts and wristbands to raise about $5,000 for the American Cancer Society.

Terry D’Arcy, owner of D’Arcy Motors and a mentor to Kohl, was impressed with Kohl’s generous effort at his age, Kohl said.

So D’Arcy made a pledge to donate $100 for each point scored in the rivalry game between Plainfield South and Plainfield Central to a needy family through Breast Intentions of Illinois, an organization that helps women with breast cancer and their families who are financially struggling.

On Wednesday, Kohl, D’Arcy and representatives of Breast Intentions presented a check for $3,600 to Plainfield resident Paula Mitchell and

Fifty-six points were scored in the game and D’Arcy paid $2,000 before the presentation for a total donation of $5,600.

“It’s hard to see someone struggling,” Kohl said. “But it was very nice to see the family.”

Mitchell said she was diagnosed about three months

ago, at a time when her husband was out of work and she needed to take care of her daughter.

“Your mindset really goes down,” Mitchell said, adding her mother and sister also had breast cancer.

After Mitchell was diagnosed, she was given a list of organizations that could help

the family pay their bills, including Breast Intentions.

“My husband called them. ... And they basically came over to us and told us they’ve been talking with Terry D’Arcy, who would like to make a donation,” Mitchell said. “It’s kind of overwhelming. The kindness of people surprises you sometimes.”

The donation came in addition to the more than $1,500 Breast Intentions donated to Mitchell, said organization President Lou Ann Peck.

“This is the first time for [a donation like this],” Peck said. “When we get a donation from an outside party, or from somebody that has heard of us, that’s wonderful.”

“I think it’s nice we put the wreaths out. The soldiers in [combat] don’t have family with them,” said 18 year old Ashley Orlando. “[These] graves are all alone out here.”

Lori James and her three children, Matthew, Hailey and Sarah James, were representing their 4H group Willing Wilton Workers of Wilton Center, Illinois.

“It’s a really nice thing to do and I feel good doing it,” Hailey James said.

“Especially for those who don’t have family here,” Lori James added. “So they are not forgotten and their sacrifices are acknowledged.”

It’s the mission of Wreaths Across America to remember, honor and teach. One of the ways it accomplishes that mission is by coordinating nationwide wreath-laying events on a specified day during December to coincide with the holiday season.

Mary Kay Morenzori of Chicago was there to place a wreath on the grave of her husband, Army Sgt. Joseph Morenzori. It was very important to her husband to be buried in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, she said.

This is the third year since he passed away that Mary Kay made the trip to Elwood for Wreaths Across

America Day. “It’s overwhelming coming out here; it’s also very comforting,” she said.

It’s the goal of Smothers and every volunteer that someday every grave will

have a wreath to honor and remember every American veteran.

“If we can keep getting the word out,” Linda Ringl said, “ we can fill this place with wreaths.

the police department, said Denis Tatgenhorst, Minooka police academy director and community policing officer.

They help out with things, such as crowd control during parades, Summerfest and Special Olympic events.

They also go out on patrol in neighborhoods and report back to the department if action is needed.

The alumni even have their own squad car.

Minooka has 15 alumni members who volunteer in all areas of the department.

They act as a fundraising arm for the department, as well, and have been able to buy AEDs for use in the community, provide training for the department’s

MINOOKA – The Minooka Police Department is holding registration for the upcoming Citizen’s Police Academy which starts in January.

The 10-week program is a good opportunity for residents to find out firsthand what goes on behind the scenes at a police department. Classes are run by officers and other police personnel skilled in particular areas.

If you’ve ever wondered why officers handle situations as they do, this will give you a chance to find out. Some questions answered during the course are why they make traffic stops, what goes into crime scene processing and what goes into decision-making when an officer is faced with shooting a suspect.

A lot of these questions are on people’s minds lately. Maybe you wonder what goes on in an officer’s mind when he or she has only milliseconds to make a decision on what action to take.

Other subjects include identity theft, how building searches are conducted, traffic laws, and DUI and use of force.

“The Police Academy opens the lines of communication with the public and it builds trust with the community,” Minooka Chief of Police Justin Meyer said.

“It helps alleviate misconceptions about the police.”

Roberta Dettman, president of the Citizen’s Police Alumni Association in Minooka, went through the program in 2009 because she was interested in knowing what went on in the front end of police work, she said.

Dettman stayed on as a member of the Alumni Association in order to volunteer her services. She has been a member for six years.

“I wanted to learn their experiences and further give back to the community,” she said. “I really love being involved.”

The Alumni Association acts as the eyes and ears of

canine officer and donate money to the Explorer program.

The alumni also applied and received a grant from the National Rifle Association, which teaches the Eddie the Eagle program about gun safety – urging kids who find guns to stop, don’t touch and tell a trusted adult. Eddie the Eagle mascot goes into schools to discuss the issue.

QUICK NEWS Dresden Station Unit 3 returned to service

MORRIS – Operators at Dresden Generating Station returned Unit 3 to full power following planned maintenance on the control rod drive system.

Control rod drives are mechanisms inside the reactor that are used to raise and lower power level, according to a news release from the station.

The maintenance couldn’t be performed while the unit was operating. The unit was removed from service Nov. 30 and placed back online Dec. 6.

Romeoville mayor appointed to committee

SPRINGFIELD – The National League of Cities has announced committee rosters for 2016. The mayor of Romeoville was among those appointed to a committee.

The NLC works in partnership with the 49 state municipal leagues and serves as a resource to and an advocate for the more than 19,000 cities, villages and towns it represents.

John Noak, mayor of Romeoville, was appointed to the Transportation and Infrastructure Services Committee, as were Schaumburg Village President Al Larson; Barrington Village President Karen Darch; and Hoffman Estates Village President William McLeod. The TIS Committee is responsible for developing policy positions on issues involving transportation, including planning, funding, safety and security of public transit, streets and highways, aviation, railroads and ports.

Greater Joliet Area YMCA aims to strengthen the community Herald Angels seeks United Way of Will County donations

Shaw Media correspondent JOLIET – Byanca Perez stepped off her bus and into the Galowich YMCA building where she was greeted with a smiled by her teacher Ms. Yaya.

She hung up her coat and backpack, sat down with her teacher and friends and colored until all of the kids arrived for the after-school program. Perez and her friends NyAliah Yarbrough and Corrine Thomas giggled and talked about their school day, while they checked out each other’s masterpieces.

These elementary-aged girls are just a few of the more than 1,000 served at Greater Joliet Area YMCA chapters in Grundy, Will and Kendall counties.

The YMCA offers before- and after-school care in four YMCA branches in nine school districts, both on-site and in schools.

Not all the families of the children who attend the before- and after-school programs throughout the tri-county area can afford child care costs. The Greater Joliet Area YMCA assists these families with a scholarship, with payments based on amount of income.

“Some of our branches serve low-income families.

If we didn’t offer these school programs, where would hundreds of kids go before and after school? It might not even make

liet Area YMCA President and CEO Jim Watts said.

Carolyn Hamilton, vice president of marketing and membership for the local YMCA, said the largest scholarship programs are the before- and after-school programs and summer camp, but individuals also receive assistance with sports, swim lessons and membership.

In 2014, $568,130 in scholarship funds were awarded.

Part of the scholarship programs are funded with the help of the United Way of Will County. The Greater Joliet Area YMCA is just one of 46 agencies under the United Way of Will County umbrella that receives money to fund programs for residents in the Joliet area.

Mike Hennessy, CEO of United Way of Will County, said one in four residents in Joliet have reached out for help from one of the United Way agencies, and the need has grown drastically from feedback from these agencies.

One way residents can help meet that need is through the Herald Angels giving campaign. The Herald-News during the holiday season collects donations from its readers, which all go to support the United Way’s partner agencies.

“Food pantries struggled to keep enough food year-round, residents struggle with alcohol and drug abuse, the homeless shelters are full and we have

seen an increased number of working families who have struggled to make ends meet,” Hennessy said. “Our agencies need 50 percent more in funds to fill the needs of the people of Joliet.”

The Greater Joliet Area YMCA membership totals are 6,270 households and 20,342 individuals. Watts said the goal for the YMCA is to strengthen the community.

“At the YMCA we teach values, respect, caring and honesty. It’s not just throwing a ball around in the gym, the kids are taught values and skills to increase their confidence, have fun and meet friends,” Watts said.

Shane McLain, a personal trainer and after-school counselor at the Galowich YMCA,

said a big part of what the YMCA does is teach kids values.

“We provide a friendly environment and the kids can come in and do their homework, play games and have fun in the gym,” McLain said. “I come in every day and get a big swarm of kids yelling my name. I get to see them grow up and it’s like a big family.”

Hamilton said the Greater Joliet Area YMCA locations cater to all ages and offer adult programs, as well as the youth services.

“We serve everybody from 6 months and older. For folks who have never experienced the YMCA, the buildings are heated, so January is a great time to begin an active lifestyle,” Hamilton said.

New Lenox’s ‘cake lady’ used family recipes, local ingredients

grocery stores and operated her bakery business from them, even after her first husband, Laverne Ullrich, died suddenly in 1979 when Paulette was 36.

Now a single parent with children ages 11 through 19, Paulette continued working hard. She sold the delis in 1984 and then, in 1986, started selling her bakery at C.P. Meat Market in New Lenox, Kevin said, which she did until 2003.

Eventually she married again, to George “Sonny” Boehner, who died from cancer when Paulette was 46, Kevin said. And in 1994, Paulette started yet another business, this one devoted to the making of silk flower arrangements.

Two years later, Paulette started her Holiday Bazaar, which she ran out of her

home over a four-day period in early November, Kevin said. Paulette provided all of the bakery, candy, crafts and floral arrangements for the event, which attracted hundreds of people each day, Kevin said. Paulette hosted that bazaar through 2003.

“She never advertised,” Kevin said. “It was all word of mouth.”

NEW LENOX – Paulette’s Bake Shop was the official name of the business Paulette Boehner of New Lenox ran for many years, but family, friends and customers affectionately dubbed her “The Cake Lady.”

Her son, Kevin Ullrich of New Lenox, said his mother’s life is an amazing success story.

“I would be hard-pressed to find anybody that made cakes better than my mom and I’m not being prejudiced,” Kevin said. “She took a lot of pride in her work.”

Paulette’s clients came from miles around New Lenox and that Paulette even built a bakery on the back of her house, Kevin said.

Taught by her own mother

to bake and cook, Paulette never changed her recipes and or bought in bulk. She purchased all ingredients from local stores.

“She put quality before money,” Kevin said.

Paulette was just 20 when she began preparing wedding and other special occasion cakes. The beautiful script and decorations really showcased Paulette’s artistry, Kevin said.

He still marvels at how his mother accomplished it, as she married at 18 and had six children by age 26, Kevin said. But somehow, Paulette did.

In 1973, Paulette began a catering business that served all homemade foods, and she catered events up to 1,000 people, Kevin said. From 1977 to 1984, Paulette opened two successful delis in local

had dabbled in the medium during the last 20 years of her life. Autumn was Paulette’s favorite season and she loved taking long drives to soak up the colors, he added.

“She would see landscapes in magazines and try to duplicate them freehand,” Kevin said.

Paulette was 72 when she died Sept. 18. She had retired at 62, far sooner than she wished, due to a series of health problems, Kevin said.

But she continued to cook and bake for her family, her gift to loved ones.

“My mother was not a technology-drive person.

She was very simple,” Kevin said. “She liked to have a cup of coffee with whoever and just talk. She liked to take a Sunday drive and just hang out. If she could have the whole family over for Sunday dinner, she was in seventh heaven.”

Mrs. Gombash was born on January 4, 1928 in Bartley, West Virginia to Jesse (Maloyed) and James Kelly Anderson. She was the oldest of five children.

She is remembered and loved for her strength, loyalty, friendship, stubbornness and nurturance of all who needed her. Her laughter was infectious. Her southern-style cooking was sensational. She loved to dance, read, shop and spend time with her family and friends.

Hank left a wonderful legacy that will be treasured by all who knew him. He came back home to Joliet after the war where he was a lifelong resident and met his lovely wife Kathryn and they were married in 1950.

He worked for Weber Dairy for 35 years during the early morning hours delivering milk throughout the Joliet and surrounding areas.

He also loved his time at Wunderlich Granite Company and then Olson/Troost Memorials into his early 80’s, as Sales Manager.

He dedicated many years of service as a Eucharistic Minister at Holy Family Church. Hank also loved the Chicago Cubs and was a lifelong member of the Old Timers Baseball Association, VFW 367 Cantigny Post #367, Joliet Rivals Club, and the Joliet Moose 300 Club. Hank’s number one love was his wife of 65 years, Kay, and his entire family. His friends knew him for his friendly and caring personality and his willingness to help anyone in need. He spent many a weekend at the Braidwood Recreation Club with his family enjoying life. He was an avid golfer, bowler, cribbage player, and loved playing poker with Norm Stoiber and friends on Fridays, even up to his last day. Henry was a husband, father, brother, friend, and the corner stone of our family and will be deeply missed.

He was the beloved father of Mary Jo (Peter) Hollingsworth of Chesterton, IN, Lori Jensen-Prodehl of Joliet and Donald J. (Carolyn) Prodehl of Arnold, MD; loving grandfather of Kelly (Ryan), Kathleen and Nicholas Hollingsworth, Kristin (Joe), Travis and Hunter Jensen and Jena and Andrew Prodehl; proud great grandfather of Tessa Rose; dear brother of Fr. Richard B. Prodehl; fond brother-in-law of Tom “Buddy” (Darlene) Larson. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Kenneth L. Delrose, age 81, a lifelong Joliet resident, passed away Friday, December 11, 2015, at home.

He was born November 15, 1934, to the late Helen R. (nee Smith) and John J. Delrose. He attended St. Mary Carmelite grade school and graduated with the class of 1952 from Joliet Catholic High School.

Ken attended St. Mary’s University prior to joining the U.S. Army and serving his Country during the Korean War era.

Left to cherish his memory are his six children, Danielle (Bill) Oeding, Dina (Steve) Bryce, Deb (Scot) Kalchbrenner, Darcee (Mike) Synoracki, Domonic (Tanya) Delrose and Donna (David) Stolarek.

In later years, Ken was very proud of his involvement with the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery Memorial Squad and being a local organizer of the Public Square Rosary, an annual worldwide honor to Our Lady of Fatima. Ken was a lifelong Diehard Cub Fan member and always believed “this is our year.”

Ill. police buy 2,100 cars with innovative law

SPRINGFIELD – Even a program that has put on the road thousands of new state police vehicles financed by a dedicated motorists’ fee has been caught up in the Illinois state budget debacle.

A vehicle-registration surcharge that has raised $58 million and transformed the Illinois State Police fleet from a junkyard of overtaxed hulks to a stable of safe and more efficient cruisers is stalled because of Gov. Bruce Rauner’s moratorium on vehicle purchases.

An Associated Press analysis of records obtained under the Illinois Freedom of Information shows the program has been successful in regularly removing from the highway pursuit vehicles that have surpassed their useful, cost-efficient and safe lifespans. A 2003 report maintained by the AP includes a squad car with 900,000 miles.

Born January 26, 1955, in Joliet, Gail Elaine was a daughter of the late Joseph Edward and Charlotte Jean (Hanson) Van Duyne. She was raised in Wilmington, attended St. Rose School, and graduated from Wilmington HS with the Class of 1973.

Gail married Robert C. Tarman June 13, 1973, and together they raised their family in Wilmington. Gail was a member of St. Rose Church, where she served as a Eucharistic minister and called on the homebound. She took great pleasure in decorating and maintaining her home and yard. Gail loved flowers; enjoyed participating in wine and design with her friends, and shopping. She was a dedicated wife, mother and

“There were literal horror stories of state police responding to a critical incident and the car breaking down on the way, and they had to call a municipal officer to cover it,” said Sacia, a Republican from Pecatonica. “The danger factor was just utterly amazing.”

An analysis of state-fleet reports that the AP has maintained from FOIA requests during the past decade shows encouraging numbers from the program’s regular vehicle replacement – officials recommend retirement after four years or 80,000 miles.

The AP calculation shows that, at its worst in the spring of 2005, the entire state police fleet of 2,285 automobiles was, on average, 6.2 years old with an average of 112,841 miles.

Nearly 75 percent of the fleet had more than 80,000 miles.

As of this October, the 2,337 vehicles in the fleet averaged

3.8 years in age and just 62,607 miles. Only 36 percent of the vehicles’ odometers topped the 80,000 mark.

“It makes all kinds of good sense,” said Eugene O’Donnell, professor of police studies at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City.

“People can see the direct benefit and it’s carved out and the money is for an exclusive purpose and it’s relatively painless for the motorist.”

But state police spokesman Matthew Boerwinkle said Rauner’s executive order prohibiting the purchase of new vehicles includes those financed with dedicated funds.

Boerwinkle said 72 Ford Interceptors that arrived this year were purchased in 2014 by outgoing Gov. Pat Quinn. No money from the fleet fund has been spent since Rauner’s arrival – its balance has grown to $6.5 million. He did not respond to repeated requests for an interview state police Director Leo Schmitz or troopers who have benefited from the program.

Coast Guard warning: Lake Michigan still cold

CHICAGO – The U.S. Coast Guard has a warning for people along Lake Michigan: While the weather may be unseasonably warm, the water still is dangerously cold.

Mike Baron is a recreational boating safety specialist for the coast guard. He says: “Warm air temperatures can create a false sense of security for boaters.”

Baron says water temperatures in Lake Michigan are hovering around 40 degrees.

He also notes that cool water drains body heat as much as 25 faster than cool air, and survival time is diminished greatly when someone is in water that’s below 70 degrees.

Baron says boaters should dress for the water temperature, not the air temperature.

The coast guard also recommends boaters wear a dry suit to increase chances of surviving a fall into the lake.

Amtrak sees passenger numbers fall in Ill. to 1.3M

SPRINGFIELD – Amtrak says that its passenger numbers in Illinois fell to about 1.3 million in the latest fiscal year, or a decline of about 4 percent.

The Springfield State Journal-Register reports the passenger rail service attributes the drop to low gasoline prices and high-speed rail construction between Chicago and St. Louis. The construction forced periodic use of chartered buses on the route.

The fiscal year ended Sept. 30. About 682,000 passengers rode between Chicago and St. Louis. That’s down 5 percent. Ridership fell 4 percent on the Chicago-Carbondale route and the Chicago-Quincy route saw a 2 percent decline in ridership.

Work on the $1.8 billion high-speed rail project is scheduled to resume in the spring.

BEIJING – China’s push for a global climate pact was due in part to its own increasingly pressing need to solve serious environmental problems, observers said Sunday.

China, the world’s biggest source of climate-changing gases, was blamed for obstructing the last high-level climate talks in Copenhagen in 2009. This time around, it sent strong political signals it wanted a deal ahead of and during the Paris negotiations that ended Saturday with the agreement to keep global temperatures from rising another degree Celsius (1.8 Fahrenheit) between now and 2100.

“Environmental issues have become much more important to the Chinese public and therefore to the Chinese government,” said Dimitri de Boer, head of China Carbon Forum, a Beijing-based nonprofit organization.

Since 2009, the public has

gone from not knowing much or caring about environmental issues “and mainly being focused on wanting to make some money, to now being very concerned with environmental issues and taking that on par with wanting to make money,” he said.

China’s cities are among the world’s dirtiest after three decades of explosive economic growth that led to construction of hundreds of coal-fired power plants and an increase in car ownership.

China was reminded of its severe environmental challenges during the Paris conference when the capital, Beijing, issued its first red alert for pollution under a two-year system because of heavy smog.

The city ordered limits on vehicles, factories and construction sites and told schools to close.

China pushed for a deal because of its own problems and because the effects of climate change are becoming clearer each year, said Dr. Jiang Ke-

jun, senior researcher at the Energy Research Institute under the National Development and Reform Commission, China’s top economic planning agency.

The message on climate change “is very clear – we must do something – and in the meantime the domestic policymaking process is getting more environment-oriented,” Jiang said. The air pollution in Beijing is putting pressure on policymakers and China is moving toward a low-carbon economy anyway, he said.

To build momentum for a deal, China and the United States, the world’s two biggest carbon emitters, last year set a 2030 deadline for emissions to stop rising. This June, Beijing promised to cut carbon emissions per unit of economic output by 65 percent from 2005 levels.

In September, Chinese President Xi Jinping pledged $3.1 billion to help developing countries combat climate change.

Blake Parzych? The senior center who is committed to Southern Illinois for football takes care of the dirty work around the basket. And if you run into one of the picks he sets, you feel it.

“Everybody knows Blake is is the unsung hero of our team,” Tanaka said.

The Indians were having some difficulty scoring against the JCA defense through the first quarter. But when senior Nick Clemmons banked in a 24-foot shot to beat the first-quarter buzzer, that provided a spark.

But what was more noteworthy is that Hilltoppers senior guard Jalen Jackson, who like Butler is among the top players in the area, settled for 14 points on 5-of-16 shooting.

The twins, sophomore guards Keegan and Kyle Graebner, both had stints on Jackson, and reserve junior guard Antonio Milazzo also helped out.

“Jackson is very talented and our two sophomore guards and Antonio Milazzo made sure he worked on every possession, for every shot he got,” Tanaka said.

When Minooka hit a scoring drought in the third quarter, Tanaka said he felt the Indians got good looks but failed to convert.

Still, Minooka hung in and won it down the stretch because the Indians play defense and make the opponent work extra hard on defense because of their patient offensive possessions.

“We played two good defensive teams this weekend,” said JCA coach Joe Gura, whose team lost to Benet, 50-

38, Friday. “We work so hard on the defensive end to get a stop against these teams that when we do get possession, we aren’t taking that halfdeep breath and running our offense.

“If you would have told me that we would hold this team [Minooka] to 52 points and Joe Butler would have three points through three quarter, I would have said, ‘Yes, we will take it.’ But sometimes you have to credit your opponent. We played hard, and so did Minooka.

Give them credit. It was a really good high school basketball game.”

If and when the Hilltoppers begin clicking on offense again, they will be fine, although playing in the East Suburban Catholic Conference will be as daunting of a challenge as ever.

As for the Indians, after falling to Joliet Central in the championship game of the WJOL Thanksgiving Classic, they seem to have flipped the page. It will be interesting to see how they fare in their Christmas tournament at York.

PLANO – Coal City won three titles and placed nine among the top three of their weights to defeat Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley, 205.5-181, for top honors at the 20-team Plano Reaper Classic. Plainfield East (145.5) had two champions and took fourth place while Peotone (68) had an individual champ and finished ninth.

Shaw Media Correspondent YORKVILLE – In another edition of The Battle of Route 47, Yorkville, led by senior guard Master Davis, held off a furious fourth-quarter comeback to defeat Morris, 48-42, Saturday night.

Davis nailed four clutch free throws in the last 36 seconds to seal the Northern Illinois Big 12 East victory for the Foxes. He scored 15 of his game-high 17 points in the second half and six of the Foxes’ eight in the crucial fourth quarter.

Morris’ Jordan Miracle’s layup with 5:30 left in the game ended an eight-minute Morris scoring drought, bringing the Redskins (4-4, 0-2) within 4028 and igniting their comeback effort. Matt Shaw followed with a 3-pointer from the corner to pull Morris within 40-31.

With 4:03 left, Miracle stole the ball and hit Trevor Mathis with a perfect pass and Mathis laid it in to make it, 40-33. With 3:38 left, Shaw struck again with his fifth 3-pointer of the game, and it was 40-36 Yorkville (5-3, 1-1).

“We played well down the stretch and almost pulled out the game,” Shaw said. “My teammates found me tonight and I was fortunate to knock down my shots. This really hurts because in the third quarter we lost this game because we didn’t execute.”

The first half was a battle between Kaczmarek and Shaw.

Kaczmarek scored all 10 of his points in the first half, and Shaw scored 11 of his game-high 17 as the Foxes grabbed a 25-19 lead.

With 5:15 left in the third quarter, Spiezio scored to pull Morris within 29-26. Yorkville, led by Davis, went on an 11-0 run to close out the quarter with a 40-26 lead.

“I really enjoy playing with the varsity,” Spiezio said. “It certainly is more intense and the competition is much better, but I really enjoy being out on the court with our team.”

Washington did what it was supposed to do against the Bears’ 29th ranked run defense – it ran the ball 33 times.

Surprisingly, the Bears said no, holding Washington to only 3 yards a carry, for 99 yards on the day.

What the Bears couldn’t do was stop Washington on third down, allowing it to convert 7 of 12 times.

Although the Bears stopped the run, Washington still used it for a nine-minute time-of-possession advantage, a stat the Bears have dominated this year, and the only battle the Bears did win was penalties, where they out-dumbed Washington, seven pentalites for 79 yard compared to eight penalties for 63 yards for Washington.

What they couldn’t handle

was Washington tight end Jordan Reed, whose nine catches for 120 yards and a touchdown was the third 100-yard game of his career, his second against the Bears.

Washington quarterback Kirk Cousins, who at times looked like he was seeking a way to lose, also was too much for this Bears’ defense, putting together a 24-for-31, 300-yard, one-touchdown, one-interception, 104.2-QB-rating day, while most of the Bears’ secondary played with a cushion that would fit nicely on Terrance Knighton’s couch all afternoon.

Most of Reed’s plays came against safety Adrian Amos or linebacker Shea McClellin, which should sound warning alarms everywhere.

When you factor in that linebacker Christian Jones was as invisible almost all day, as McClellin was visible missing plays against the run and pass, it no longer can be much clearer the Bears will have to start over from scratch at inside

linebacker this offseason.

Clearly, the Bears hoped to see at least one of the youngsters arrive, hopefully, both.

Having to replace both will be a big step backward.

Amos has been the pleasant surprise this season, starting every game as a rookie fifthround draft choice. Although he has made few significant plays, he hadn’t missed many until last week on the Blaine Gabbert scramble, and competent was a success as a rookie.

Both Fox and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio were asked during the buildup to Washington how Amos would respond to his first tough outing against San Francisco, and the assumption was he would be fine.

He wasn’t, as Amos missed more plays Sunday than he had in a game all season.

The Bears now will have to watch closely over the next three weeks to make sure safety isn’t a problem going forward, as well, because veteran freeagent Antrel Rolle’s first year

has been pretty much a washout, and he will be 34 next year.

And there were the continuing struggles of kicker Robbie Gould, who offered a shot at redemption with a game-tying 50-yard field goal in the final two minutes and instead pushed it wide right, throwing gas on the firestorm of Bears fans discontent with him.

So what is left to play for in the final three weeks of the season?

It is critical Fox gets this team a couple more wins to add confidence in his young players and retain the faith of his new fan base.

Without a couple more wins, it will be difficult to continue to argue this team is better than last year’s, and a lost season is not something Bears Nation will take kindly to after the promise of just a few weeks ago.

‘Bears’ Long on Sunday: ‘That’s what it looks like to get caught with your pants down’

aarkush@chicagofootball.com CHICAGO – Thirteen games into his first season as the Bears’ starting right tackle, Kyle Long won’t use playing a new position as an excuse for his poor day in the Bears’ 24-21 loss to Washington.

If his pummeling of a Gato-

rade cooler on the sideline, and head buried in hands seemingly forever before fielding questions in the locker room wasn’t evidence enough, Long made something else perfectly clear: his play Sunday was very poor – to the extent, he felt, he cost the Bears a chance to win.

“A lot of things I did today that I wasn’t happy with,”

said a distraught Long. “… I honestly feel like I cost us the game today in the first half.

No matter how good our team played in the second half, I feel I put ourselves in enough of a hole to put us behind the eight ball.”

The Bears only had one first down before they were in a 14-0 second-quarter hole,

when Long’s surrendering of a strip-sack by OLB Trent Murphy halted a promising 10-play, 44-yard drive in Washington territory.

“That’s what it looks like to get caught with your pants down,” Long said of the play, in which Murphy took advantage of Long leaving his hands out before swatting them away

en route to a crushing sack of Bears QB Jay Cutler.

Long also would commit a false start penalty before halftime, but the Bears overcame his gaffe after Cutler hit receiver Alshon Jeffery for a touchdown to cut their deficit to 21-7 before halftime.

After their 24-21 loss to Washington on Sunday, it is official, the Bears are a bad football team.

It is important to remember, however, the Bears are not as bad as they were at the end of last season, and that measuring stick is the most important in the NFL. As long as a team is getting better, it is doing what it is supposed to do.

What is driving Bears fans nuts is, although the Bears are better than they were when general manager Ryan Pace and coach John Fox came to town, they aren’t as good as they were two weeks ago.

Washington was the second 0-5-road team in two weeks to knock off the Bears at Soldier Field after the big Thanksgiving night win in Green Bay, leaving the Bears at 1-6 at home on the season. No wonder the natives are getting restless.

What is bizarre about the Washington loss is how the visitors flipped the script on the

Panthers continue their undefeated streak vs. Falcons The ASSOCIATED PRESS

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Cam Newton added to his MVP resume, completing 15 of 21 passes for 265 yards and three touchdowns, and the unbeaten Carolina Panthers defeated the Atlanta Falcons 38-0 on Sunday to clinch a first-round bye in the NFC playoffs.

Newton connected on scoring strikes of 74 and 46 yards to Ted Ginn Jr., and Jonathan Stewart ran for a touchdown as the Panthers (13-0) scored on their first three possessions.

Newton also threw a 4-yard TD pass to Ed Dickson in the final seconds of the first half before leaving for good at the end of the third quarter with Carolina up 38. He finished with a career-high quarterback rating of 153.3, and the Panthers won their 17th straight regular-season game.

STEELERS 33, BENGALS 20: At Cincinnati, Andy Dalton broke his right thumb while making a tackle on an interception, and the Steelers roughed up backup AJ McCarron while pulling away to a victory that left the AFC North up for grabs.

The Steelers (8-5) rumbled with the Bengals during pregame warmups and then led the whole way, sending Cincinnati (10-3) to its first lopsided loss of the season.

William Gay returned one of McCarron’s passes 23 yards for a touchdown, and Ben Roethlisberger had another good

day as Pittsburgh’s resurgent offense kept rolling. Pittsburgh has scored 30 points in five straight games, a franchise record.

RAIDERS 15, BRONCOS 12: At Denver, Khalil Mack had five sacks of Brock Osweiler, including one in the end zone for a safety, and Derek Carr bounced back from an awful first half.

Carr threw two touchdown passes and the Raiders (6-7) beat the Broncos for the first time since Sept. 12, 2011, despite being held to minus-12 yards in the first half – the worst performance by a team heading into halftime in nearly a quarter-century.

PACKERS 28, COWBOYS 7: At Green Bay, Wis., Eddie Lacy ran for 124 yards and a touchdown, while fellow running back James Starks added two scores.

The Packers (9-4) have a one-game lead in the NFC North over Minnesota after their second straight victory.

With 435 yards and 29 first downs, Green Bay got better production out of its inconsistent offense with coach Mike McCarthy assuming play-calling duties again.

The Packers were still hampered at times by penalties and problems in short-yardage situations.

Wilson went 23 for 32 for 292 yards. The five TD throws matched a career high – set earlier this season against Pittsburgh – and gave him 16 over his last four games.

EAGLES 23, BILLS 20: At Philadelphia, Caleb Sturgis kicked a 30-yard field goal with 3:26 left, then Ed Reynolds intercepted Tyrod Taylor’s pass in the final minutes.

LeSean McCoy had 74 yards rushing and 35 receiving in his return to Philadelphia. He kissed the Eagles logo at midfield before the coin toss, but ran off the field immediately after the game.

The Eagles (6-7) and Redskins (6-7) are tied atop the NFC East standings. The New York Giants (5-7) could make it a three-way tie with a win at Miami on Monday night.

JAGUARS 51, COLTS 16: At Jacksonville, Fla., Blake Bortles threw for three touchdowns and ran for a score – all in the second half – and the Jaguars ended the Colts’ 16game winning streak in the AFC South.

The Jaguars (5-8) scored on offense, defense and special teams in the same game for the first time since 2011, the franchise’s most complete game under third-year coach Gus Bradley.

The loss was the second in three games for the Bucs (6-7), whose hopes to make a run at a NFC wild card took a hit.

Jameis Winston threw a fourth-quarter TD pass to Adam Humphries to trim a 14-point deficit to 24-17. The Bucs got the ball back with just over five minutes remaining, punted four plays later and then watched New Orleans grind out three first downs to end the game.

BROWNS 24, 49ERS 10: At Cleveland, Johnny Manziel shook off a first-half intercep-

tion and sideline meltdown by throwing a touchdown pass in his first start since being benched for off-field antics.

The Browns snapped a seven-game losing streak.

Manziel passed for 270 yards, delivering a quality performance the Browns (310) desperately needed. He tossed a 2-yard TD pass to Gary Barnidge late in the third quarter as the Browns won for the first time since Oct. 11 and took some pressure off coach Mike Pettine.

Just before halftime, Manziel threw a pick and followed it with an angry outburst on the bench.

Isaiah Crowell rushed for 145 yards and had two short TD runs for Cleveland.

Hawks win, Kane extends streak

hgould@suntimes.com CHICAGO – There wasn’t a whole lot of drama to it. Patrick Kane ended the tension of his scoring quest early Sunday by picking up a first-period assist that extended his points streak to 26 games.

The game was a different story. With neither team able to convert, the Hawks knuckled out a 4-0 win, scoring three goals in the last 10 minutes to break open a tight game against Vancouver before 21,711 at the United Center.

With the Hawks nursing a 1-0 lead, Dennis Rasmassen jammed in a rebound with 8:24 left. Andrew Shaw added

an empty-net goal with 30.8 seconds to play, and Brandon Mashinter knocked in a scrappy finale with 9.8 seconds to play.

The victory was the Hawks’ fourth in five games, and the Patrick Kane second straight shutout for Corey Crawford, who has only allowed two goals in his past four games.

“I was able to really get focused these last few games,” Crawford said. “Kind of had that in the beginning of the year, then I got a little complacent. It seems like you have to have everything going togeth-

er too. Our D-men are playing really well. There’s not many second opportunities the last bunch of games. That helps a lot.”

Kane, who has needed overtime twice to keep his streak alive, was credited with an assist on Duncan Keith’s power-play goal at 11:51 of the first period.

The assist won’t make any Kane highlight reels. You needed to pay attention to see his contribution on the goal, an early pass to Keith. The defenseman wound up scoring on an opportunistic wrister from the left circle when Artemi Panarin fed him from the left corner. Artem Anisimov ran interference at the net.

Ryan leads Irish to win vs. Loyola of Chicago The ASSOCIATED PRESS SOUTH BEND, Ind. – After a couple of energized recent practices, Notre Dame freshman sharpshooter Matt Ryan was feeling it Sunday afternoon, and Loyola didn’t have an answer.

Ryan scored 14 points and knocked down 4 of 6 from 3-point range to help the Irish pull away from the Ramblers in the second half of an 81-61 win.

“I came into today just ready to fire,” Ryan said. “The past couple practices, I’ve been very aggressive and it definitely helped my confidence coming into today.”

Ryan also grabbed five rebounds and played 19 minutes

off the bench as he continues to develop into a vital component for the Irish.

“Matt Ryan really energized us tonight,” said Notre Dame coach Mike Brey. “He’s just a weapon that we will have to play more and more.”

EVANSTON – Tre Demps tied his career-high with 23 points and Northwestern shrugged off a sluggish start for a 77-35 rout of Chicago State on Sunday night.

Demps, who was 9 for 18 from the field (including 5 of 10 on 3-pointers), also scored 23 in three previous games, the last

being in February against Indiana. Nathan Taphorn also had 11 points for Northwestern.

Devon Friend led Chicago State (3-8) with 12 points.

The Wildcats (8-1) have won five straight and are off to their best start since also winning eight of nine to start the 2010-11 season.

It was Northwestern’s first game in eight days. The Wildcats hadn’t played since an 81-56 win over SIU-Edwardsville on Dec. 5.

The long layoff was apparent early as Chicago State jumped out to a 5-0 lead and Northwestern didn’t connect on its first field goal until four minutes and 32 seconds into the game.

David Bird from England surely has written more bridge books than anyone else. He has more than 100 and counting. One of his most recent is “What’s Your Line?” (Master Point Press). It contains 100 declarer-play problems spread evenly over 10 topics.

They are testing, but not impossible.

If you would like either to improve or to practice your play, this book will suit you.

Today’s deal comes from the chapter on slams. How should South plan the play in six spades after West leads the club jack? Spades break 3-3.

In the auction, most tournament players would open the North hand with ace-king, ace and a good fivecard suit. However, North should have rebid one no-trump. South’s four no-trump was Roman Key Card Blackwood in diamonds. North showed three key cards (three aces, or two aces and the diamond king). South then jumped to six spades, even though his partner might have been void in the suit. It’s called author’s license.

South starts with 11 tricks: five spades, two hearts, two diamonds and two clubs. The only chance of a 12th winner is to establish dummy’s diamond suit. If that is also 3-3, an overtrick can be scored, but what if they are the more likely 4-2?

After winning trick one and drawing trumps, declarer should duck a diamond. If an opponent shifts to hearts, South wins with his king, plays off dummy’s top diamonds (pitching, say, a club), ruffs a diamond, crosses to dummy with a heart, and discards his low heart on the high diamond eight.

High triglyceride levels can be treated with medicines, too. The problem is that we don’t have proof that lowering triglyceride levels with drugs improves a person’s health. That’s because there has not been enough good research.

Statins are commonly prescribed for lowering high levels of “bad” cholesterol, but they also effectively lower triglyceride levels. Another option is a triglyceride-lowering drug such as niacin or a fibrate.

Fibrates such as gemfibrozil (Lopid) reduce the production of triglycerides in the liver. Moderate doses of a statin and a triglyceride-lowering drug also may be combined.

For years, many doctors have focused on treating high levels of LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and have tended not to treat elevated levels of triglycerides. Today there’s good evidence that triglycerides should not be ignored.

Dear Dr. K: My recent cholesterol blood test came back pretty good, but my doctor said he was worried about my high triglyceride levels. What are triglycerides? Should I be worried, and what can I do about this?

Dear Reader: When doctors perform cholesterol blood tests, they actually test for LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, HDL (“good”) cholesterol, total cholesterol (a combination of good and bad cholesterol), as well as triglycerides – another type of fat.

Levels of triglycerides that truly are high increase your risk for pancreatitis, an inflammation of the pancreas, as well as heart disease and stroke.

The level of triglycerides in your blood is measured accurately only when you’ve been fasting for 12 hours before your blood is drawn. When measured while you’ve been fasting, triglyceride levels are categorized in this way: • Normal: less than 150 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL); • Borderline high: 150 to 199 mg/dL; • High: 200 to 499 mg/dL; •Very high: 500 mg/dL and above.

Recent studies find that about a third of people in the United States have at least borderline high levels of triglycerides. Nearly 20 percent have levels that are clearly high. So this is an important health issue.

The advice I can give with confidence is to recommend lifestyle changes that we know can lower triglyceride levels. Avoid diets high in saturated fat.

Cut back on sugar-sweetened foods and beverages.

Exercise regularly, and achieve a healthy weight through a combination of diet and exercise. These lifestyle practices directly reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, as well as reducing triglyceride levels. And reducing those levels may further reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Because a marriage is supposed to involve the joining together of two families into one, you might suggest to your mother-in-law that she extend an invitation to your parents for the holidays. But if she’s unwilling or your parents are unable to travel, then I agree with your husband that you should alternate the holidays.

After you have children, this should be discussed again, because it is important they get to know their cousins, and it will be easier to expose them when the family is all together – whether it’s at your home or your in-laws’.

Dear Abby: My rapists are dead now, but I can see from the years since their attack what damage they have caused. I’m having medical complications that have developed over time, pain and suffering from those complications, PTSD and additional stress over pharmacy bills because of it. It has affected the way I feel about men, and I’m afraid it will be this way for the rest of my life.

My attackers caused a great financial burden on me because of the cost of psychological counseling and loss of income due to episodes of related illness and working beneath my potential.

Rapists seem to think they’re entitled to take what they want when they want it.

I’m thinking perhaps they should be forced to take responsibility for the resulting cost to the person whose life they affected, which brings me to my question: Can women sue their rapists? –
