Powerhouse Lockport A major engineering achievement of the late 19th century was the construction of the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal. This canal was dug from Chicago to Lockport from 1890 to 1900 and extended to Joliet by 1907.

The construction techniques used to dig through the layers of soil in this location included the use of steam shovels and dynamite, in contrast to the building of the I&M Canal in the 1840s where virtually all of the digging was done by hand using a variety of domestic- and foreign-born laborers.

The channel in this 28mile section had a navigable depth of more than 20 feet and had a width that varied between 110 and 201 feet. At Lockport, the channel widens to about 500 feet where large lake vessels could easily maneuver.

The main mechanism that controlled the flow of water through the Sanitary Ship Canal was located at the western terminus near Lockport.

The unique feature of the work was a Bear Trap Dam that was 160 feet wide, with a vertical play of seventeen feet, and seven sluice gates, each 30 feet wide and having a vertical play of 20 feet.

At the time of construction, the dam was the largest of its type and provided the means of controlling the flow of water through the canal.

The dam went into operation on the morning of Jan. 17, 1900.

was extended nearly 4 miles from the Controlling Works to the Upper Basin in Joliet.

The extension included the construction of the Lockport Powerhouse, which was designed by Frederick L. Barrett in Beaux-Arts style, using concrete blocks laid to simulate stone.

and supplied Lockport with cheap power and made it a manufacturing, rather than a commercial, city.

Built between 1905 and 1907, the red-roof powerhouse plant measures 385 feet by 70 feet and continues to provide hydroelectric power to the area.

The original four horizontal Francis-style turbines inside the facility that generated electrical power were replaced by two vertical

Kaplan-style turbines, which operate today.

Recently, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission recognized the powerhouse as the oldest hydroelectric project in Illinois.

In 2004, the Lockport Dam and Powerhouse were added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Run raises funds for Joliet Township High School scholarships

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – “He was running so fast his suit fell off,” the announcer called out as one of the top finishers returned on the Santa Run. He wasn’t the only one.

The third Joliet Township High School Alumni Association Santa Run on Saturday attracted more than 300 runners whose participation raised money for a scholarship fund.

Nearly all of them came back fully clad in Santa coat, pants, beard, cap and belt.

The costume is undoubtedly the major draw of the event.

Keeping it on is another thing.

“After running a little bit, my suit was falling all over the place,” said Brandyn Collins, a freshman at Joliet West who handed off most of his Santa suit to his father – Joliet police officer Larry Collins – who was among the police officers working security along the running route from Joliet Central High School through downtown and back.

Brandyn came in third with not much left but his Santa belt when announcer Jon Wise, Joliet West class of 1987, made the observation that his swiftness left the suit behind.

David Carter, a senior at Joliet Central, came in second, but the belt may have slowed him down.

“I’ll be better prepared next year,” Carter said, noting he spent a lot of the run pulling on his belt.

The Santa Run is an untimed run, designed to attract non-competitive participants.

“The families love it,” said Lynne Lichtenauer, JTHS director of alumni relations.

“They use photos from it for Christmas cards. It’s an untimed run because we want a family run.”

“We have fun every year,” Winkels said, when asked what brings her to the event, “and my mom’s the superintendent.”

Joliet crews hope to be more snow-ready this winter

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The city plans to ramp up its preventative measures against snowstorms this winter.

Joliet, along with other cities, faced public criticism for the condition of streets after the Feb. 1 blizzard that dropped a foot of snow under conditions that turned streets into washboards.

New Mayor Bob O’Dekirk made it a campaign issue.

O’Dekirk at the Nov. 17 City Council meeting brought up the prospects for snow removal this winter.

“I think our citizens demand that we do better in this area than we have in the past,” O’Dekirk said.

Joliet passed its first test with the early snow of Nov. 21, although it was hardly the blizzard test of Feb. 1 when a foot of snow fell under conditions that caused it to pack in the streets like ice.

Joliet Roadways Engineer Mike Eulitz said the city, however, does plan to get a faster head start on snow this winter.

“We just purchased a new brine maker,” Eulitz said. “We can make about 2,000 gallons

of salt brine in 20 minutes.”

Plus, the city has equipped more trucks with spreaders to spray the blend on the roads.

Road crews in previous years focused on spreading the blend on hills and bridg-

es before the snow came. This winter, they will be putting it on more streets ahead of the snow or in its earliest stages.

“The main thing with doing it ahead of time is that it will not allow the snow and ice to

bond to the pavement,” Eulitz said. “It also slows down the accumulation.”

Something else that may be in the city’s favor is that blizzards like the one that occurred Feb. 1 don’t come around very often.

“Last year, we had the snow that turned into ice, and it became a disaster,” O’Dekirk said at the recent council meeting.

Joliet wasn’t the only city or village to face public criticism for the condition of streets for days after that snowfall, however.

The Village of Plainfield is looking for new measures to avoid the aftereffects that occurred after the Feb. 1 blizzards. Streets were like washboards for days, and gaps in the icy snow became virtual potholes.

“The nature of that storm is what caused the pothole effect,” Joliet Public Works Director James Trizna said during the discussion at the council meeting. “I’ve talked to many public works directors – from Rockford and all over the Chicago area. It was the same situation.”

City of Joliet bans parking on streets on two-inch snow days

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet snow parking ban will be in effect again this winter.

The city bans street parking on streets during snowfalls of two inches or more while acknowledging the rule can be hard to follow in certain neighborhoods.

“Some older neighborhoods in Joliet do not have adequate off-street parking options,” reads the city’s news release on the ban.

Even so, the city urges residents in older neighborhoods to seek spots in the driveways of neighbors, or even commercial and church parking lots, until snow crews clear the streets.

Joliet news release ment will have the option of issuing a parking ticket to the owner of a vehicle left on a city street during a snow event, as well as have the option of having the vehicle towed, or both,” reads the city’s news release.

The city notes that it has more than 500 miles of streets to plow with a fleet of 37 trucks and a crew of 37 drivers.

The goal is to clear all streets within 24 hours after the snow stops falling.

The first streets to be plowed are major arteries, hospital routes, hills and bridges. Then, the city plows main subdivision streets and collector streets.

Remaining subdivision streets are plowed next. Last are cul-desacs and dead ends.

The city does not plow alleys.

City Hall also provided shoveling guidelines.

While Joliet does not have an ordinance requiring sidewalks to be shoveled, it does have an ordinance against shoveling snow into the street.

Will County committee to discuss planned demo of Eagle Building

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Will County Capital Improvements Committee has a busy docket scheduled for this week.

Tuesday’s agenda includes discussion about demolition of the antiquated Eagle Building, 20 W. Washington St. in Joliet, which once housed several sheriff’s offices, and the approval of a contract for a construction manager at-risk for the sheriff’s Laraway Road facility.

Both moves push forward the county’s plans to rearrange and consolidate offices in downtown Joliet and elsewhere.

Nick Palmer, chief of staff for the Will County Executive’s Office, said county officials hope to Jan. 1 after competitively bid the demolition of the three-story Eagle Building.

“It’s just an eyesore,” Palmer said. “Keeping it there is just a waste.”

Asbestos removal will be required prior to demolition of the decades-old building. Previous base-level estimates from the county executive’s office ranged between $250,000 and $450,000, but Palmer said Friday other factors unique to this building may increase overall costs.

“As we always do, we hope to get the best price of a qualified bidder,” Palmer said.

Additional surface parking could be created following the building’s demolition, Palmer said.

Laraway Road sheriff’s complex Also on the agenda is consideration of a contract with the Hoffman Estates-based firm Leopardo Cos. to be the construction manager at-risk for the planned Laraway sheriff’s complex. At-risk means the company would pay if the project goes over a guarantee maximum price or the project is not completed in time.

Several of the sheriff’s offices were moved into the First Midwest Bank building, helping set in motion the eventual demolition of the Eagle Building. The county purchased the bank building last year with the intent to build a new courthouse on the 4.3-acre site.

The contract up for a vote Friday pays Leopardo a flat fee of $113,477 for the preconstruction phase, which includes evaluation of the county’s programming, timeline and budget requirements, and consultation with the county and architect on material costs and labor.

Other costs involved in the Leopardo contract are yet to be determined until the County Board’s Finance Committee decides on a final budget for Laraway sheriff’s facility. Finance Committee Chair Mike Fricilone could not immediately be reached for comment Friday.

Previous estimates were about $15 million.

JOLIET – Rogelio Guerrero fondly remembers the time he spent at the Spanish Community Center when he was a child.

“I used to hang out at the community center when I was a kid and it helped me stay out of trouble and molded me into the person I am today,” Guerrero said. He now is the president of the center’s board of directors, where he helps the agency continue its mission.

“Our job is to help people help themselves,” he said.

The community center is vital to the people it services.

Executive Director Elizabeth Nevarez said with all of its programs combined, the center annually helps about 13,000 people. It gets some financial assistance from the United Way of Will County as it is one of that organization’s partner agencies.

One out of four residents of Will County have reached out for help to one of the 46 agencies the United Way of Will County supports, and numbers are on the rise, which makes it crucial the community become involved to support the efforts of so many.

The United Way of Will County President and CEO Mike Hennessy said he hears from the agencies that revenues are down by almost 10 percent, but the needed funds are 50 percent higher than in the past because more people are seeking assistance.

“We need additional help to implement services to the residents of Will County. We need the community to respond,” Hennessy said.

One such way residents can do so is through the Herald Angels giving campaign. The Herald-News during the holiday season collects donations from its readers which all go to support the United Way’s partner agencies.

Hennessy said the donations stay in the county and are allocated due to need of each individual agency, and assured the residents that if they helped these groups, “I’m confident their donations will reach the greatest number of people with their support.”

Interviewing Stan Ketcik about his radio show meant the tables would be turned, and he would interview me for his show – it’s fair play.

We did that last Monday and he got to be the one asking questions of me.

We did it over the phone.

Ketcik at his Minooka home, me at mine and Anderson-Ortega at KPRP in Hawaii running the technical side. The show is like eavesdropping on an hourlong conversation, Ketcik explained And that is just what it felt like as I fielded questions about being a journalist, a martial artist and my 75-gallon coral reef tank. While I was nervous about saying something dumb (it was live), it was such a comfortable conversation that the time just flew by.

I now count myself among many other Stan the Aloha Man’s featured guests on his morning show, from actress Heidi Swedberg (who played George’s fiancé, Susan, on “Seinfeld”) to musician Justin James (who plays an awesome ukulele) and other people from all walks of life, from inventors to religious leaders.

I’m thrilled to be considered someone who exudes the Aloha spirit.

In addition to meeting Stan the Aloha Man, I also got to meet Ortega-Anderson, and that’s all in a day’s work.

I feel a kinship with Stan Ketcik because his radio show is much like my column – a venue to talk about good things, good people and those who make a difference in our communities and the world.

One of the great things about being a journalist is meeting all kinds of interesting and diverse people.

Whether it’s someone with a cause, a sad predicament or a story that touches your heart, everyone has something to share with the rest of us.

One such person is Stan Ketcik of Minooka. Ketcik has been in radio for many years and has been everything from morning show host to overnight producer to program director.

He’s been on the advertising sales end since 1994, but being on air has always been in his blood. Last March, Ketcik started hosting a live show on KPRP radio in Hawaii, and he does it from the comfort of his home in Minooka and over the telephone.

Stan Ketcik His show is “Spirit of Aloha” and his on-air personality is Stan the Aloha Man. For a solid hour every Monday morning, at 9 a.m. Hawaiian time (1 p.m. Central time), he interviews all kinds of interesting people who exude the Aloha spirit.

While it’s common to use Aloha as a greeting, in Hawaiian language it means affection, peace, compassion and mercy.

How Ketcik got the host job all the way in Hawaii is interesting. He and his wife, Jo Ann Ketcik, love Hawaii and have traveled there twice this year alone.

On a cold, snowy day last winter, Jo Ann suggested he call the radio station and tell them what an Illinois winter is like. They loved the conversation with Stan so much that he soon got a call from station owner Emmie Ortega-Anderson and was offered the Monday morning spot.

Ortega-Anderson, by the way, recently was named one of the world’s top 100 influential Filipino women around the globe by the Filipina

That meant, Terry said, that Florence was cheerful and conversational, always diverting the attention away from her and to the other person.

“I think people gravitate toward that,” Terry said.

Such an attitude made Florence a natural at her role as an activities aide at Sunny Hill Nursing Home in Joliet, Terry said. It also contributed to her dedicated involvement with the ladies auxiliary at VFW Cantigny Post 367 in Joliet, and First and Santa Cruz Lutheran Church, also in Joliet.

Karen Sobero, administrator at Sunny Hill Nursing Home in Joliet, said Florence was popular among the residents.

“She was always cheerful and sunshine,” Karen said, “and she was very pretty.”

In fact, Terry said Florence was the first winner of the first Ms. Illinois Senior Citizen pageant in 1984. But Florence’s prettiness didn’t end with her looks. She had a beautiful singing voice, which Florence used in the service of both the VFW and her church.

If Florence had an opportunity to sing, Terry said, she took it.

“She was in the choir at First Lutheran Church, and she sang at most of the funerals for veterans,” Terry said. “She sang at Sunny Hill, and she sang a couple of times at Abraham Lincoln cemetery.”

Terry wasn’t certain what started his mother-in-law’s dedication to the VFW, but he did say Florence’s first husband, Lawrence Tyda (deceased), was a U.S. Army veteran and her second husband, Robert Pazulinec (deceased), had served in the U.S. Navy.

For the last few years of her life, Florence – who was 90 when she died Sept. 15 – lived at Sunny Hill where her popularity, dedication and joyous spirit once again reigned. She was elected president of the resident’s council twice, Terry said, and loved participating in sing-alongs.

Florence even “coached” the current activities’ aides.

“She’d tell them, ‘You don’t do things the way we used to do them,’ ” Terry said.

“It was falling off, so I gave it to one of the cops,” said Munson, a cross country runner who said he started without seeking to finish first. “I think it’s fun. It’s a different experience running in a costume.”

While he did give up most of the suit in the race, Munson

kept his Santa pants on, which wasn’t easy.

John Davis, a cross country coach at Troy Middle School who has participated in the run all three years, offered this tip.

“I learned a little trick,” Davis said. “I use safety pins to pin the pants to my shirt. You can tell the first-timers. You see them running, and they keep pulling their pants up.”

Most people who come to the Santa Run came for the fun.

They came from a lot of different places, too.

Zach Huston of Charlotte, North Carolina was in town visiting his sister, Meggy Blaine of Joliet. They both were in the Santa Run. “He asked me if I’d like to do it,” Blaine said. “He found out about it before I did.”

After all, they don’t have a Santa Run in Charlotte.

“They have an Elf Run,” Huston said.

Bob Navarro, a Joliet West graduate, was dressed in an elf outfit. But he wasn’t running.

He helped organize the event.

Besides being a member of the JTHS alumni board, Navarro is executive director of the Heritage Corridor Convention and Visitors Bureau. He liked seeing visitors from as far as Charlotte at the run.

Other towns may have Santa Runs, but the Joliet event does have something extra to offer, Navarro said.

“What makes this special is they all get a full Santa suit with hat, beard and everything,” he said.

Finishing fast may mean some of it comes off in the run, however.

PEORIA – A medical school professor in Peoria will continue his research into Alzheimer’s Disease thanks to a $440,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health.

The Peoria Journal Star reports that Dr. Ken Fukuchi has spent 30 years researching the disease.

Fukuchi is a professor in the department of cancer biology and pharmacology at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria.

The grant will support another two years of research. Fukuchi is examining a theory that a type of immune cell in the brain can prevent the accumulation of an abnormal protein that often is

ROCKFORD – A company headquartered in Texas has purchased Rockford-based Rock River Environmental Services, the country’s third-largest waste services company.

Rock River employs about 280 workers and generates $75 million a year in revenue.

The Rockford Register Star said it’s unclear how the sale earlier this month to Waste Connections might affect garbage collection in the Rockford area.

Rock River Environmental Services operates in 19 counties in central and northern Illinois. It has five collection operations, two landfills, a compost facility, a transfer station and a recycling facility.

WARRIORS PLAN TO BE BACK Class 5A runner-up Lincoln-Way West will return eight defensive starters in 2016

DeKALB – The Lincoln-Way West football team accomplished an unprecedented trip to a state championship game.

The Warriors set a school record for victories with 11.

The offensive unit, led by running back Gabe Montalvo and all-state offensive linemen Justin Witt (North Carolina State) and Bryan Brokop (Ne-

braska), set a school record for points with 481.

The West contingent was among the largest, if not the largest, attending any of the eight state title games at Huskie Stadium on the campus of Northern Illinois University.

The Warriors’ season ended with a 42-21 loss to Nazareth in the Class 5A final.

The Warriors, as they have all season, showed the character and determination that

made this team special. In the second half, Montalvo finished a 220-yard rushing game and scored all three West touchdowns. He set school records in rushing for 2,494 yards and 41 touchdowns.

On the state list of season rushing totals, Jake Apple of Dakota (2011) is No. 20 with 2,574. Montalvo’s 41 touchdowns tie him with Hickey Thompson (Belleville Althoff, 1990) and Caleb Pratt (West-

ville, 2007), for ninth place.

JCA’s Ty Isaac (Joliet Catholic, 2011) is eighth with 42.

Kudos go to the Warriors’ seniors. Montalvo, Witt, Brokop, Deven Reed, Cam Gavin, Brett Bergman, Jason Lucinski, Ben Zordani, Jake Mauney, Dylan McHale, Kevin Siemeck, Cody Conry and Dan Wainwright have laid the foundation for future West teams.

West have set the standard for future teams, beginning with next season,” Reed said. “We fell a little short, but we played for the state championship against a very good Nazareth team. Lewis performs well despite key injuries

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – Many teams would be distraught if they lost one of the nation’s top players to an injury of uncertain severity, and their performance on the court would reflect it.

That’s the disappointing news that hit Lewis University’s NCAA Division II second-ranked women’s basketball squad last week when guard Jamie Johnson suffered a knee injury in its 71-63 loss Wednesday at Grand Valley State.

Johnson, an All-American along with Mariyah Brawner-Henley on last year’s historic Flyers team that reached the Elite Eight, was named Women’s Basketball Division II Bulletin Preseason Player of the Year and was averaging 22.2 points during the first six contests.

In addition, the Flyers also

learned guard Tiana Karopulos, who started the first five games, also suffered an injury that will have her sidelined for an undetermined time.

But rather than turn in a half-hearted effort in their return to action, coach Kristen Gillespie’s Flyers tried to make the best of the bad turn of events when they met Ferris State on Sunday in a nonconference game at Neil Carey Arena.

Lewis jumped out to a 26-12 lead after one quarter and led 44-19 at halftime as four players reached double figures in an 8154 victory over the Bulldogs.

“You never want to see two starting guards, including the national preseason player of the year, go down, and there’s a lot of unknowns surrounding Jaime’s and Tiana’s injuries,” Gillespie said. “But like I told our team, we can let our circumstances define us, or we can define what’s going on, and we took a good step at saying,

‘We’ll be OK.’ I know that Jamie and Tiana are out, but we still have a talented team. It may not always be pretty from here on out, but we’re going to grind it out and find a way to win.

“Mariyah and Jessica Kelliher have been really stable forces on the offensive and defensive ends, but I loved the contributions from Alyssa Dengler and Alyssa Siwek by stepping up. It has to be a group effort, but if they can continue to that and we get Tiana and Jamie back, it’s going to make us an awfully good team down the stretch at the end of the season.”

The Flyers (6-1) used a 10-0 run in the opening quarter and closed the second period with a 14-1 burst to grab a 25-point lead at the break. Ferris (0-4) never got any closer than 21 points back during the final 20 minutes.

Brawner-Henley led the way with 20 points, eight rebounds

and four steals after hitting 10 of 15 shots, while freshman Kelliher added 18 points, four rebounds, three blocks and three steals while connecting on all 10 of her free throw tries.

“I think we’re off to a good start,” Kelliher said. “Obviously, with Jamie being hurt and Tiana going down, it was a setback. But today, we all knew that we had to step up and just play as hard as we could, and I think that we did that. We came in with the mindset that we had each other’s backs and we would rally for each other, and we did that.

“I think that we have a real special team, and obviously we have some great leaders in our seniors, and they just make it that much easier for me to come in as a freshman and for the other younger kids. I think that it just helps to know that your teammates will be there for you if you’re not having a great game.”

Siwek added 16 points and

eight assists and only had one turnover while Dengler had 13 points for the Flyers, who shot 52 percent from the floor and owned a 37-26 rebounding advantage. Lewis outscored Ferris, 40-22, in the paint and 31-8 in points off turnovers.

“We had a lot of depth to begin with, and we still do, even though we’re shortened a little,” Siwek said. “But I think that this an opportunity for people to showcase what they can do. We had to step up from the beginning of the season after losing a lot of seniors, so we just have to step up again, and I think that we’re doing OK. “We definitely have big shoes to fill in that the ball might have started rolling differently this year, but I don’t that the end product could be different than last season. We don’t stop grinding and always put up a fight.

Everyone wants to step on the court and do their role, no matter what it is, and that’s a great atmosphere to be around.”

Eight defensive starters will return for West, led by junior Trey Telez. Juniors Danny Allen, Josh Bohne and Trevor Schmidt return, as do sophomore starters Ryan Robbins, Jake Price, Matt Murphy and Nick Skentzos.

Both quarterbacks, juniors Connor Lowman and Cal Pohrte, will be back. Big 6-foot5, 310 pound Nate Henry, the starting left tackle this season, will anchor the offensive line.

“This was so exciting to play in this game and do something no West athletic team had ever done,” Telez said. “I

am so proud of, and love, all of my teammates. We fell a little short, but it was a historic season.

“I am ready to go to work for next year. We return a number of quality people, and we all are going to work hard and maybe a year from now will be playing in this game in Champaign.”

Jake Price intercepted a pass and was West’s leading tackler against Nazareth. “[Nazareth] is a great team,” Price said. “It was tough covering those great receivers all day. A number of us return on defense and are looking for great things in 2016. Having experienced a state championship game now, we all want to go to this game next year and win it.”

“As a sophomore, I had the time of my life playing with our outstanding seniors,” Robbins said. “I wish them the best of luck in everything they do. They taught me so much this year.

“We have a great group returning, especially on the

West’s opening opponent is yet to be determined. Home games against Bloom, Andrew and Stagg will follow. A trip to Homewood-Flossmoor in Week 5 will be followed by a home game against Normal Community, then a trip to Lockport.

Both teams came in 4-0, but Nazareth cruised to a 19-0 halftime lead. It was over, right? Not quite.

The Hurricanes, coached by former Joliet Catholic all-stater and assistant coach Mike Maloney, came out in the second half and dominated, outscoring Nazareth, 34-0, for a stunning 34-19 victory.

A few weeks later, Nazareth visited ESCC rival JCA. The Hilltoppers raced to a 31-0 halftime lead and were home free, right? Again, not so fast.

JCA did win that night, but the final was 38-35. Nazareth climbed almost all the way back.

Nazareth coach Tim Racki said that game set the stage for the rest of the season. “We took a loss that night where we grew up as a team,” he said.

The Roadrunners had won the Class 6A championship in 2014 with a victory over Lemont. This year’s edition rebounded to knock off JCA, 35-21, in the quarterfinals.

They were not in awe of the big stage.

West may not have been in awe, either, but the Warriors had another issue that proved too difficult to neutralize.

That, of course, is the Road-

The bottom line on Saturday’s Class 5A state championship game at Huskie Stadium at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb is not open to argument.

The better team that day won, plain and simple.

Yet, despite Nazareth Academy building a 42-0 lead early in the third quarter en route to a 42-21 victory, Lincoln-Way West belonged on the field with the Roadrunners. However, what happened to the Warriors is the same thing that happens to multiple state finalists every year.

“When you’re down here and something goes wrong early, the kids feel like, ‘Oh, no, it’s not going to happen for us. Our dreams are gone,’ ” West coach Dave Ernst said. “Then, when you settle down and start playing your game, it’s too late.

“Our concentration broke a little when we got behind, and then it got worse. But if you notice, there are not a whole lot of nail-biters down here.”

West made the final score more respectable as Gabe Montalvo, who finished the season with 2,494 yards and 41 touchdowns, scored three second-half touchdowns and climaxed his career with a 220-yard effort.

The Warriors went into Saturday knowing they had to play a virtually perfect game to beat an opponent as quick and as good as Nazareth. It didn’t happen early on, then Nazareth made some big plays, and the outcome no longer was in doubt.

The scenario Ernst discussed often happens in big games during the regular season as well. It is interesting that Nazareth was involved in two games where, against strong opponents, what happened in the second half was completely different from what had transpired in the first half.

Blackhawks’ Kane gets point in record 19th straight game

By GREG BEACHAM The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane scored in his 19th consecutive game Saturday night to set a new NHL record for the longest points streak by a U.S.born player.

Kane scored a power-play goal midway through the first period of the Hawks’ road trip finale against the Los Angeles Kings, beating Jonathan Quick with a high wrist shot and celebrating with a yell and a fist pump.

Kane’s 14th goal of the season broke his three-way tie with American-born players Eddie Olczyk and Phil Kessel, who both had 18-game scoring streaks. The streak is the second-longest in Hawks history, tying a streak by Denis Savard 30 years ago.

Kane added an assist on Niklas Hjalmarsson’s goal in the second period of the Hawks’ 3-2 overtime loss, giving him 31 points during the streak.

“It’s cool,” Kane said. “You think about how many great American players have played the game, the two players that had that 18-game points streak and what they’ve done in their careers. So it’s pretty cool right now, but kind of overshadowed by the loss.”

Kane has played some of the best hockey of his remarkable career during a season that began under a dark cloud.

On Nov. 5, Buffalo prosecutors announced they wouldn’t file criminal charges against Kane after a three-month investigation of an accuser’s claim that she was raped at Kane’s offseason home in a city suburb. Kane repeatedly said he had done nothing wrong, and the Erie County district attorney claimed that forensic evidence contradicted the claims of the accuser, who eventually said she did not want to press charges.

The longest scoring streak in Hawks history was Bobby Hull’s 21-game string during the 1971-72 season.

The Hawks host Minnesota on Tuesday night, travel to Ottawa on Thursday night and return home to face Winnipeg on Dec. 6.

“I think in this day and age, it’s pretty tough to be consistent every night, especially with how smart coaches are line-matching and how good the defense is in this league right now,” Kane said Friday in Anaheim after tying the U.S. mark. “It’s exciting. I don’t want to think about it too much, just try and enjoy it.”

tape tells us Tracy Porter, who has clearly been the Bears’ best defensive back this season, took his game to a new level. Porter is playing with a confidence I haven’t seen in a Bears corner since Donnell Woolford.

Even “Peanut” Tillman never displayed the coverage skills Porter did Thursday night with an interception and four passes defensed when Aaron Rodgers dared throw at him.

Have I given an A+ yet this season? I have now. You can count on one hand the number of times Rodgers has completed just 51.2% of his passes in a game as he did Thursday.

Backup safety Chris Prosinski and nickel corner Bryce Callahan were huge contributors as well.

Both were B+ players against the Packers, and Adrian Amos would have joined them were it not for a costly pass interference penalty that, in spite of the horrible officiating most of the night, was in fact interference.

Kyle Fuller wasn’t bad, he just doesn’t show up much on the tape.

Lamarr Houston and Willie Young both had nice nights, but the truth is, nobody in the front seven stuck out the way the DB’s did.

Prosinski offered the best explanation after the game.

“Coach Vic (Fangio) put us in great positions,” he said. “For me, he is a genius. He is the first coordinator I have had that I can really understand as far as what he is trying to do with the game plan. A lot of credit goes to him.”

It appeared Fangio’s plan was to let the Packers pound away on the ground – another 177 rushing yards allowed is a disturbing trend – but to not let Rodgers beat them.

As you watch the tape, you see everywhere a Packer receiver tries to go, there is a different Bears defender there to stop them. I’m not qualified to grade Fangio, but I am experienced enough to know he earned a game ball for this one.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS SEATTLE – Russell Wilson threw a career-high five touchdown passes, including two TDs to Doug Baldwin in the final 8:12, and the Seattle Seahawks held on for a wild 39-30 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers and Ben Roethlisberger on Sunday.

Wilson threw three touchdowns to Baldwin, including an 80-yard catch-andrun score with 2:01 left after Pittsburgh had trimmed Seattle’s lead to 32-30.

Wilson also threw two touchdowns to Jermaine Kearse and Seattle (6-5) picked up a huge victory in its hopes of getting back to the postseason.

Roethlisberger threw for 456 yards – the most ever against the Seahawks – but was pulled with 2 minutes left and taken to the locker room for concussion protocol. The Steelers (6-5) had a two-game win streak end.

TEXANS 24, SAINTS 6: In Houston, Brian Hoyer threw for 205 yards and two touchdowns and the Texans held Drew Breese and New Orleans without a touchdown for the first time in 10 years in a win.

The Texans (6-5) have won four games in a row for the first time since winning six straight in 2012.

New Orleans (4-7) dropped its third straight on a day when the team didn’t score a touchdown and Breese’ streak of games with a touchdown pass was snapped at 45.

BENGALS 31, RAMS 7: In Cincinnati, Andy Dalton threw three touchdown passes – two of them to A.J. Green – and the Bengals ended their brief slide.

After dropping a pair of prime-time games, the Bengals (9-2) were back in sync against a team that struggles to score. The Bengals’ 31 points equaled the second-most against St. Louis this season.The Rams (47) have dropped four in a row.

VIKINGS 20, FALCONS 10: In Atlanta, Adrian Peterson ran for 158 yards and a pair of touchdowns, Matt Ryan threw two more interceptions for the Vikings.

Bouncing back from a 30-13 loss to Green Bay, Minnesota (8-3) jumped ahead on Peterson’s 1-yard run in the opening quarter, and clinched it when he got loose on a 35-yard scamper down the sideline with 4:15 remaining in the game.

Atlanta (6-5) has lost five of its past six, including four straight, and is in danger of becoming one of the few teams in NFL history to start 5-0 and miss the playoffs.

CARDINALS 19, 49ERS 13: In Santa Clara, California, Carson Palmer ran for a goahead 8-yard touchdown with 2:28 left and tumbled after spiking the ball, and Arizona squeaked by San Francisco.

It was the fifth straight win for the Cardinals (9-2) and first road victory in the

series since September 2008.

Moments earlier, Palmer fell backward as he released the ball and completed a 34yard pass to J.J. Nelson to put Arizona on the 1.

Chandler Catanzaro missed the extra-point try, and Blaine Gabbert and the 49ers (3-8) had one more chance with 2:21 left. Anquan Boldin caught an 18-yard pass on fourth-and-20 to clinch the win for Arizona.

COLTS 25, BUCCANEERS 12: At Indianapolis, Matt Hasselbeck threw for 315 yards and two touchdowns and Adam Vinatieri made four more field goals for the Colts.

The Colts (6-5) won their third straight to remain tied atop the AFC South with Houston.

Tampa Bay (5-6) rookie Jameis Winston threw for 245 yards and a touchdown, but was sacked five times.

JETS 38, DOLPHINS 20: At East Rutherford, New Jersey, Ryan Fitzpatrick threw four touchdown passes, two to Brandon Marshall, and the Jets (6-5) gained some traction in the AFC wild-card race.

Fitzpatrick also connected with rookie Devin Smith and Eric Decker in New York’s fourth win in the last five meetings with Miami (4-7). The Jets had lost four of their past five overall.

REDSKINS 20, GIANTS 14: In Landover, Maryland, Kirk Cousins threw a 63-yard touchdown pass to DeSean Jackson and scored on a quarterback sneak, Washington intercepted Eli Manning three times, and the Redskins pulled into a tie for the NFC East lead.

The Redskins and Giants are both 5-6.

The Philadelphia Eagles (4-7) and Dallas Cowboys (3-8) are the other members of the mediocre division.

RAIDERS 24, TITANS 21: In Nashville, Tennessee, Derek Carr threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Seth Roberts with 1:21 left, and Oakland ended a three-game losing streak.

The Raiders (5-6) handed the Titans (29) their ninth loss in 10 games.

CHIEFS 30, BILLS 22: In Kansas City, Missouri, Alex Smith threw for 255 yards and two touchdowns, Spencer Ware ran for 114 yards and a score, and the Chiefs (6-5) won their fifth straight.

Tyrod Taylor had 291 yards passing and three touchdowns for Buffalo (5-6).

CHARGERS 31, JAGUARS 25: In Jacksonville, Florida, Philip Rivers threw four touchdown passes, two to Antonio Gates, and the Chargers (3-8) ended a six-game losing streak.

Rivers passed Joe Montana (273) and tied Vinny Testaverde (275) for 11th on the NFL’s TD pass list.

Rivers completed 29 of 43 passes for 300 yards against the Jaguars (4-7).

“Offensively, I don’t think we are going to like the film that much because we didn’t play as well as we wanted to.

“Defensively, you have to hand it to them. It was a heck of an effort on the defensive side, you have to give them a lot of credit.”

Those are the words of Jay Cutler from the visitor’s locker room/ interview area at Lambeau Field immediately after the Bears’ 17-13 upset of the Packers on Thanksgiving night.

He was right.

The offense wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t good and left a lot of plays on the field.

Cutler was a B+ playing mistake-free football in the worst conditions the Bears have faced in several years.

While Cutler’s performance wasn’t special, the Bears once again wouldn’t have won without him.

Most of the rest of the Bears offense – including Matt Forte, Jeremy Langford, the entire receiving corps and offensive line – were all B- -to- C+.

More often than not, 17 points and 290 yards of offense is not enough to win in the NFL, a 3.3yard average on 101 yards rushing is unacceptable and a 6.5-yard average on 31 passes is extremely mediocre.

Forte and Langford took what little was there and created almost nothing on their own while the receivers and runners clearly missed Martellus Bennett.

Alshon Jeffery made some plays and missed others, and while Zach Miller scored a huge touchdown, his fourth in four games, he missed more plays than he made, catching two passes on seven targets.

The exceptions were Marc Mariani with an A- after Cutler targeted him three times on third down – twice on the Bears first touchdown drive – and he converted all three with catches for 10, four and 21 yards. Kyle Long was a B for struggling in pass protection in the first quarter, but locking down the right side of the line after that.

Charles Leno Jr. is not an accomplished run blocker, and he had his worst game this year in pass protection, earning a C- at best.

The story of the night was the Bears secondary. The tale the

Irish fall to Alabama in tournament play

By MARK DIDTLER The Associated Press LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – Notre Dame coach Mike Brey needed just two words to describe his team after a tough loss to Alabama.

“Growing pains.”

Retin Obasohan scored 19 points, including the winning layup with 8 seconds left, in Alabama’s 74-73 win over No. 17 Notre Dame in the fifth-place game Sunday night at the AdvoCare Invitational.

“We did a lot of good things, I think, against a good team,” Brey said. “I’m disappointed we couldn’t get a stop to win the game. That scenario we’ll have to be better or we’re going to have many disappointments like this.”

Notre Dame had a chance to win it with 2 seconds remaining, but Demetrius Jackson’s layup was off the mark.

“I think I learned a lot about our team,” Brey said. “I would much rather be 2-1 than 1-2, but I understand the big picture.

We’ve got a lot to work on, and we’re going to have time to work on it.”

The Fighting Irish lost their first game of the tourney, 70-68, to Monmouth. They reached the fifth-place game by beating Iowa, 68-62.

This was the third consecutive game against a Top 25 team for the Crimson Tide. They earlier lost in the invitational to No. 23 Xavier, 64-45, before beating No. 20 Wichita State, 64-60.

“Retin had it going for us tonight,” Alabama coach Avery Johnson said. “We came into the game trying to make a concerted effort to get him going offensively.”

Shannon Hale also had 19 points for Alabama (4-2).

Notre Dame (4-2) got 18 points from Steve Vasturia.

Arthur Edwards had 15 points and made all six of his shots ­including three 3s – in the first half. The Crimson Tide led by as many as 13 during the opening half and went into halftime up 43-39. Edwards was scoreless in the second half.

“They kept coming at us,” Brey said.

Strong second half helps lead No. 4 Iowa State past Illinois

By JOE REEDY The Associated Press NICEVILLE, Fla. – With Illinois and No. 4 Iowa State trading the lead for most of Saturday’s championship game in the Emerald Coast Classic, Cyclones guard Monte Norris decided with 10:51 remaining to try and deliver a knockout punch.

Iowa State held a 59-58 lead when Norris had the ball at midcourt and saw Abdel Nader had a step on his defender. Norris fired a lob pass, and Nader slammed it home. The dunk was part of an 18-4 run in the Cyclones’ 84-73 win.

“We practice a lot of lobs and connect. When I was at halfcourt, I saw him point up.

I threw it up there, and you saw the results,” said Norris, who was voted the tournament MVP after having 20 points and nine rebounds.

Georges Niang, who led the Cyclones (5-0) with 23 points, had six points during the spurt. Norris and Nader (18 points) had four apiece.

“That catapulted the momentum, changed the whole pace and fired us up,” Niang said. “I really think that was instinct from Monte. He knows the time, the score and what it is going to do to change momentum.”

For the first 30 minutes, Illinois (3-4) hung in and was challenging the Cyclones at both ends of the court.

The Illini scored seven of the game’s first nine points and were up, 12-6, fewer than five minutes in. Iowa State started slowly cutting into the lead, as the last 12 minutes of the half saw six ties and seven lead changes.

The opening part of the second half had two more ties and five lead changes before the Cyclones seized control.

“It felt like a heavyweight boxing match, and then the last 8-9 minutes they imposed their will and for whatever reason we weren’t able to impose ours. Their ability to work to get the shots was better than us,” Illinois coach John Groce said.

Malcolm Hill led Illinois with 20 points, while Kendrick Nunn added 19, and Mike Thorne Jr. had 10.

In its first five games, Iowa State has wins over teams from the Pac-12 (Colorado), ACC (Virginia Tech) and Big Ten (Illinois).

“It was good to get these tests early. Power five teams have the size we are going to be playing against in the Big 12,” Niang said.

Thorne Jr. left midway through the first half with a left knee injury and did not return. Groce said the extent of the injury to Thorne was unknown.

Lindsey, Demps spark NU in rout over New Orleans

By JOHN JACKSON The Associated Press EVANSTON – Scottie Lindsey might soon crack the starting lineup. For now, he’s focused on his role as a sixth man.

“The coaches tell me every day that I’ve got to be ready to play coming off the bench,” he said. “I’ve got to be a spark.”

That was the case Saturday night.

Lindsey had 15 of his 26 points in the second half and Tre Demps added 16 to lead Northwestern to a 90-63 rout of New Orleans on Saturday night.

Lindsey was 9 for 12 from the field, including 6 of 7 on 3-pointers, as Northwestern (51) won its second straight. His previous high was 12 points twice last season.

“Scottie was tremendous,” Northwestern coach Chris Collins said. “I don’t know if he’s going to get 26 every night, but him just giving us that scoring

punch is really big for our team.

“I’ve said all along he’s a big X-factor for us. When he’s rolling like that, it makes us that much more dangerous of a team.”

Nate Frye had 14 points and Cameron Reed had 13 to lead New Orleans (2-3), which never seriously threatened after the break. The closest the Privateers got was 50-29 early in the second half.

The Wildcats defense focused on New Orleans’ Christavious Gill, who entered averaging 13.8 points but was held to three points on 0-for-7 shooting.

Bryant McIntosh had 13 points and seven assists, Gavin Skelly 10 points and Alex Olah six blocks for Northwestern.

New Orleans stayed close early despite Demps scoring the Wildcats’ first 10 points of the game. But Northwestern broke the game open with 13 straight points for a 27-12 advantage with just over 10 minutes left before halftime.

Kobe Bryant announces he will retire at end of season

By GREG BEACHAM The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – Kobe Bryant has decided to retire after this season, ending his 20-year career with the Los Angeles Lakers.

The 37-year-old Bryant made the announcement Sunday in a post on The Players’ Tribune. The third-leading scorer in NBA history wrote a poem titled “Dear Basketball” to announce his decision.

“My heart can take the pounding. My mind can handle the grind. But my body knows it’s time to say goodbye,” Bryant wrote. “And that’s OK. I’m ready to let you go. I want you to know now. So we both can savor every moment we have left together. The good and the bad. We have given each oth-

Bryant went straight from high school in suburban Philadelphia to the Lakers in 1996, and he earned five championship rings and 17 All-Star selections during two decades with the fran-

chise – the longest tenure with one team in NBA history. Bryant also won two Olympic gold medals.

But Bryant’s last three seasons have ended early due to injuries, and he played in only 41 games over the previous two years. He has struggled mightily in the first 15 games of this season with mostly young teammates on a rebuilding roster, making a career-worst 32 percent of his shots and dealing with pain and exhaustion every day.

In recent months, Bryant repeatedly said he didn’t know whether he would play another season, clearly hoping for a rebound in his health and the Lakers’ fortunes.

Neither has happened, and the ever-impatient Bryant didn’t wait any longer to decide his future.

Oklahoma moves up to No. 3, with Clemson-Alabama still 1-2

By RALPH D. RUSSO The Associated Press Oklahoma moved up to No. 3 behind Clemson and Alabama and the Big Ten placed three teams in the top six of the new Associated Press college football poll.

Clemson is No. 1 for the fourth straight week and Alabama is No. 2. The Tigers received 53 first-place votes and the Crimson Tide got the other eight from the media panel.

The Sooners jumped two spots to after winning the Big 12 title with a 58-23 victory at Oklahoma State on Saturday night.

Three Big Ten teams followed with Iowa at No. 4, Michigan State No. 5 and Ohio State No. 6.

Stanford moved up six spots to No. 7 after beating

Notre Dame with a last-second field goal and the Fighting Irish dropped from fourth to ninth.

POLL POINTS

Oklahoma has its best AP ranking since the 2011 season, but this one is far more satisfying for the Sooners.

In ’11, Oklahoma was preseason No. 1 and steadily slipped as the season went along. The Sooners were No. 3 in October, dropped as far as No. 19 in the poll after the conclusion of the regular season and finished 16th.

This season Oklahoma started 19th, moved up a bit before losing to Texas in October and slipping back to 19th and has steadily climbed since.

CONFERENCE CALL

The Big Ten has three of

the top six teams in the rankings for the first time since the final regular season poll of the 2006 season, when Ohio State was No. 1, Michigan was third and Wisconsin was sixth.

The bowl season did not go well for the Big Ten’s heavyweights. Ohio State lost to Florida in the BCS championship game, 41-14, and Michigan was beaten, 32-18, in the Rose Bowl by Southern California.

Wisconsin won the Capital One Bowl, 17-14, against Arkansas.

Do not be scared as a passed hand

Harold Wilson, a former prime minister of Great Britain, said, “Courage is the art of being the only one who knows you’re scared to death.”

At the bridge table, some players get scared that partner will pass in the “middle” of the auction. For example, look at the North hand in this diagram.

You pass, and partner opens one spade. What would you do now?

If you were not a passed hand, you would happily respond two clubs, planning to support spades on the next round. Now, if you bid two clubs, partner might pass.

So, a columnist recommended jumping to three spades. I think that is awful. Jump raises require four trumps.

The best solution is to use the Drury convention, when a two-club response by a passed hand shows at least three-card support for partner’s major and a maximum pass. But if you do not use Drury, you should still bid two clubs.

Some 99 percent of the time, partner will not pass. And if he does, you will not have missed a good game contract.

In this deal, over two clubs, partner will rebid two hearts, and you can continue with two spades – or perhaps even three spades. Over either, partner should raise to four spades.

After West leads a trump, how should South plan the play?

Declarer has four potential losers in the red suits, but one can be eliminated by ruffing a diamond in the dummy.

After taking the first trick, South can duck a diamond.

He wins the next trump, cashes the diamond ace, ruffs his last diamond, and turns to hearts. Here, he comes home safely.

You also asked whether our microbiome could affect a child’s risk of developing autism. While I was skeptical about such a possibility, a study from a research team at Caltech in 2013 was provocative. The team studied mice that behave in a way similar to the way autistic children behave. The mice were found to have unusual amounts of certain bacteria in their guts. They also have a gut condition that makes it easier for substances produced in bacteria to enter the bloodstream.

The unusual gut bacteria in the mice make a molecule similar to a molecule that is at high levels in the urine of many children with autism. The scientists injected this molecule into normal “non-autistic” mice: The mice developed autistic behavior.

Then the scientists treated the “autistic” mice with a probiotic that reduced the number of unusual bacteria in their gut: The mice stopped their autistic behavior.

So I think it is possible, but unproven, that the trillions of bacteria that live on and within us could affect our risk for developing heart disease and autism. Our microbiome also may well increase our risk for many other diseases.

Over the past decade, microbiome studies have become one of the most exciting fields of research.

Dear Reader: For a long time we’ve known defects in how our genes are built, and defects in whether our genes are appropriately turned on, powerfully influence whether we develop diseases. However, our human genes may not be the only genes that affect our health.

Trillions of germs live on and within us, all of our lives. They live on our skin, in our mouth, in our gut and elsewhere. And they have genes, too. We call their genes, collectively, our “microbiome.”

Indeed, our microbiome contains about 400 times more genes than we have human genes.

These microbial genes make molecules that could well affect our health, perhaps profoundly.

You asked about whether our microbiome could affect our risk of getting heart disease. It may do so in several ways. First, as I discussed in an earlier column, our microbiome may affect our risk of becoming obese. It may also affect our risk of developing Type 2 diabetes (the most common kind).

Both obesity and diabetes increase our risk for getting heart disease.

In addition, certain species of bacteria that live in our gut make a molecule called TMAO. People with high blood levels of TMAO have an increased risk for heart disease. In animal experiments, high blood levels of TMAO were abolished by probiotics or antibiotics that reduced the number of bacteria that make TMAO. It is far from certain such

Dear Abby : I gave birth to a baby girl two months ago. I have a wonderful husband and my in-laws are incredible. We live far away from both sides of the family.

My mom is a former cocaine and prescription pain meds addict. Her addiction diminished her mental capacities, and it’s difficult to relate to her because the only things she can talk about are her health issues and all the medications she’s currently taking.

Mom recently came to visit us. I hadn’t seen her in two years, and when she did, I realized we have nothing in common. She and my dad are still happily married, and Dad has yet to meet my child. I’m supposed to visit them for the holidays, but I’d rather spend the time with my in-laws. Any suggestions?

It all started about this time last year. Mrs. Claus and the elves noticed I wasn’t hearing as well as I should. It really became obvious after we returned to the North Pole after Christmas.

I started getting letters from children all over the world. Little Tommy in Tucson asked for a bike and I thought he said trike.

Sarah in Florida asked for a doll and I brought her a ball.
