Falling into autumn In the past few weeks, both editions of The Herald-News have had stories about haunted houses put on in the time leading up to Halloween as a way to spook and scare local residents.

We’ve also had stories about pumpkin farms, a play with a ghoulish theme and festivals that celebrate all things that have to do with autumn.

Despite the cooler temperatures and shorter days, I do love autumn. There’s nothing I like more than heading outdoors to take in the changing colors on the trees and other foliage that paint a tapestry across the landscape.

It’s a ripe time to visit apple orchards or pumpkin farms – both of which are plentiful in this part of Illinois. Last year, I introduced my then 1-year-old nephew to the joy of jumping in leaf piles and throwing them in the air (he took much plea-

VIEWS Kate Schott sure in throwing them on my head) and can’t wait to get a big pile raked up again this fall.

Long story short – it’s a great time of year to enjoy the outdoors. The only bad thing is it’s short-lived and followed by the much less enjoyable bitter cold of winter.

This weekend’s forecast looks sunny and decent as I type this Friday afternoon; here’s hoping you get to join me in a few days of soaking up the sun.

Comics change

If you’re a fan of the comic “Stone Soup,” I have some sad news for you. The producer of the comic “Stone Soup” is ending its daily run effective this weekend.

Starting Monday, the com-

ic “Frazz” will replace “Stone Soup” on the comic pages inside of The Herald-News editions. The full-color comic section that is inserted into the Sunday edition will still continue to carry “Stone Soup.”

So if you’re missing the comic, my apologies. The syndicate we get that particular comic from gave us a few choices to choose from to replace it, and our company (“Stone Soup” was in multiple Shaw Media publications) went with “Frazz,” which is about school custodian Edwin “Frazz” Frazier and the various people in his world.

Educators in Will, Grundy seek more local control

fsarver@shawmedia.com As school districts in Will and Grundy counties endure the burden of some state requirements district officials say sap time and resources, Gov. Bruce Rauner has made relief from those mandates a priority under a task force established earlier this year.

The Local Government and Unfunded Mandates Task Force – chaired by Lt. Gov. Evelyn Sanguinetti – seeks not only to investigate ways to consolidate local governments, but also to eliminate mandates that burden them. By the end of the year, the task force plans to present to Rauner policy solutions for those issues.

In August, the Large Unit

District Association – representing the largest Illinois school districts – showed support for Rauner’s plan to eliminate mandates. Several months earlier, members of the task force passed proposals to provide relief for physical education and drivers education mandates for schools.

There’s a variety of state mandates that come from lawmakers but not from the Illinois State Board of Education, which may enforce them, said Lane Abrell, Plainfield School District 202 superintendent. District 202 is a member of the Large Unit District Association.

Plainfield post office goes pink for breast cancer awareness More online

vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – People were greeted Friday to a pink mail room when they stepped inside the Plainfield U.S. Post Office.

Employees accented themselves with pink clothing and set up pink ornamentation and a pink table promoting breast cancer awareness.

Post office supervisor Jen Triner spearheaded the “Post Office Goes Pink Day” as an enthusiastic supporter of breast cancer awareness. She raised $3,800 and walked 39 miles in support of the cause in 2010.

“When I did walk, there were thousands and thousands of people,” Triner said.

“I thought about what I could do.”

Triner, whose cousin and aunt are breast cancer survivors, greeted customers Friday morning as they came in, inviting them to the awareness table.

“Just look at the sign,” Postmaster Ronald Kinzler said, adding that three relatives, including his mother, have dealt with breast cancer. “Just our employees signed it. These are all people who know someone

that has been affected.”

All federal post offices are celebrating breast cancer awareness month. But Kinzler said Triner took it to the next level.

Those wishing to support

the cause can buy at any post office breast cancer awareness themed stamps, a 20-stamp sheet for $12, with $2.20 going toward breast cancer research.

Plainfield resident Olga Korbonska bought a sheet Friday morning.

“I always try to donate if I can,” Korbonska said. “In my family there has been all different kinds of cancer: skin, kidney. I think it’s important to spread awareness. If you catch it early, it’s good. You hopefully have a better chance at surviving.”

Kinzler said the Plainfield post office plans on “going pink” again next year.

Will ‘Gateway Center’ emerge from construction site?

JOLIET – Phil Andros is a walking example of the challenges in using public transit in Joliet, and often he is running.

“I literally have to run from the bus to catch the train,” the Joliet resident said.

The bus typically arrives downtown at 6:05 a.m. His train leaves for Chicago at 6:10 a.m.

And even that five-minute opportunity to switch from bus to train has disappeared since the Jefferson Street bridge, which his bus typically uses to get downtown, was closed for a painting project in July.

“Now that the bridge is under construction, I have to take a cab to get to the train in time,” Andros said.

Informed that the state now may keep the bridge closed into November, Andros groaned.

“I budgeted for the bus to bridge to [cab] be done in mid-October,” he said.

He’s not the only one whose public transit budget has been upset by decisions in Springfield.

The Joliet Gateway Center, the project designed to build a new train and bus station and put assorted modes of public transit into one location, has come to a near standstill because of budget overruns and a state mandate that, Joliet officials say, prevents work from going forward.

The state refused to award bids to construct a new train station this summer when it was apparent that there was not enough money left in the budget to build the bus station, too.

Illinois Department Of Transportation Spokesman Guy Tridgell said the City of Joliet project is being built in part with a state grant awarded almost four years ago. The city has been in charge of managing construction and overseeing the bidding process, he said.

At a standstill

The project now is at $49.7

million, putting it about $7 million over budget. The state of Illinois, which has $30 million in the project, awards construction contracts.

Joliet officials want the state to allow the train station to be completed and build the bus station when more money is available. But the state’s position has been both or nothing, City Manager Jim Hock said.

“The money is there to do the train station and platform project,” Hock said. “But IDOT is saying, ‘We know the bus station is going to cost x number of dollars, and if we spend money on the train station, there won’t be enough for the bus station.’ ”

This makes some sense to Andros, who’s tired of running for the train and calling taxis.

He wants a bus that gets to the train station in time.

“I agree with the all or nothing part because now it’s not matching up,” he said.

Not all commuters are of the same opinion.

“I think that’s crazy,” Reiser said. “I think they should just go ahead with the train station and get it done. I think the train is more of a necessity.”

Union Station was shut down a year ago as commuter platforms were moved to the other side of the railroad tracks, where the new train station was to be constructed. Now, there is no train station, and it’s not clear when one will be built.

Construction of both the train and bus stations was to have started by now with completion dates aimed at 2017.

“I’m told by more and more residents and emailed by more and more residents that people are going to other communities to get public transportation,” Joliet City Councilman Jim

McFarland said. “They are not using our transportation center because it’s a mess. And now it’s not moving forward.”

Plan B?

McFarland insists that the city come up with a Plan B to get the project done.

“Every train needs a train station,” said Joseph McCloud, while waiting last week in the new commuter platform shelter built for the Rock Island District line.

But the old Union Station now is on the other side of the railroad tracks from the commuter platforms for both the Rock Island District and Heritage Corridor lines. McCloud noted that not only don’t the buses come to the new boarding area, there aren’t many taxis there either.

build new train and bus stations around the commuter platform. But she does know that finding parking can be confusing and time consuming.

“I find I have to leave the house around 15 minutes early to have even a chance of getting parking, and I’m on a 6:10 a.m. train,” Hartig said. “I’m still trying to get it in my head that they thought they only needed two rows of parking right by the train.”

On the plus side, the final product – if the Joliet Gateway Center gets done – could make Joliet an easier city for public transportation, which was the original goal.

“I think it’s going to be a great asset for Joliet,” Reiser said.

She said the transportation center’s location across the street from Silver Cross Field could help make the city a destination point.

“They had to do something,” said Bob Curren of Crest Hill, adding that he believed the city’s public transportation hub was due for an upgrade.

But as it is now, Curren said, “It doesn’t look great. It’s in the middle of construction.

This town isn’t much to look at anyway. It would be nice if they finished it.”

The city already has downscaled plans for the train and bus stations to accommodate the budget. Aesthetic features also were taken out of the plans to save money.

Now, Hock said, city officials will reach out to Metra, Amtrak and Pace officials to see if the public transit operators that will use the new hub are willing to put in some of the $5 million needed to finish it.

“The train station is for Metra, and it’s for Amtrak,” Hock said. “It’s for our residents. But it’s for commuters.”

Caution urged for Will, Grundy residents

CREST HILL – Even though many shoppers might already be swiping their new chip-enabled credit cards at stores across Will and Grundy counties, consumers are being cautioned not let their guard down to potential fraud.

The new cards – considered more secure with the use of a microchip – are being rolled out in an effort to undermine large-scale security breaches such was the case last year with big-box stores Home Depot and Target.

The cards already are widely used in Canada and Europe.

The difference in use is minor, but noticeable: Instead of swiping and signing, consumers insert cards into a payment terminal upon checkout.

The microchip card works by authenticating the card as legitimate, therefore preventing hackers from using the unique debit card number to make fraudulent purchases.

Credit card user Dave Moran, of Coal City, said he’s reluctant to believe these new “chip-and-sign” cards – as they’re commonly called – are much safer than the old magnetic strip cards.

For example, researchers have found a critical flaw in the new microchip-enabled cards, he said. One of the features is the cards can be used for contactless transactions.

“That worries me. Now, they don’t even have to work for it,” Moran said. “They can just set it up and walk on by.”

Businesses were expected to be ready by Oct. 1 to accept chip-enabled credit cards. The Illinois Retail Merchants Association came out against the new cards ahead of the Oct. 1 deadline, saying the new card

requirements are not as safe as people think. The statewide organization also said the new cards unfairly shift liability from banks to businesses.

Businesses that don’t get on board with the new chip readers could be in trouble in the event someone hacks into the system, the IRMA noted.

That’s because with the new changes, the liability for fraud committed with debit cards shifts from banks to stores. Before this change, banks had been responsible for a share of fraud losses when a counterfeit card is

used, and retailers are on the hook when the person using the card is not the authentic cardholder, according to the news release.

Joliet Chamber Vice President Mike Paone said he hasn’t received many calls from business owners concerned about the changes. But he and other chamber leaders are encouraging businesses to get on board, he said.

“There’s this misconception that it’s mandatory. It’s not, but it opens them up to a lot more liability if they don’t,” Paone said.

Mars spokesman: Plans underway for distribution facility

aschier@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Candy giant Mars has plans to bring a distribution facility to Joliet, which will be developed and owned by CenterPoint Properties, according to a Mars spokesman.

“We need more companies – good companies – coming into Will County to employ our residents,” County Board member Donald Moran, D-Romeoville, said Saturday when he confirmed Mars’ intent to come to CenterPoint Intermodal Center in Joliet.

The Mars spokesman stat-

ed in an email the move is being made to increase efficiency and scale. Mars currently uses third-party distribution services in Romeoville and Manteno, but in 2017, it will transition to Joliet.

“Our distribution partners are in the early stages of workforce planning for the new Joliet facility,” the spokesman stated. “As with Manteno and Romeoville operations, staffing at Joliet will be managed by a third-party and specific job numbers cannot be confirmed at this point.”

JLL stated in a report from First Quarter 2015 that Mars was in lease negotiations for a 1.3 million-square-foot project to be developed by CenterPoint in Joliet.

Economic Development President and CEO John Greuling stated Saturday via email that he could not confirm Mars’ plans to come to the city.

Representatives of the city of Joliet and CenterPoint Properties did not respond Saturday to requests for comment.

Mars is one of several major companies to announce similar plans this year to come to Joliet. Both Amazon and Ikea intend to establish distribution centers in the city’s Laraway Crossings Business Park at Illinois Route 53 and Laraway Road.

That’s why Crest Hill’s FireWater BBQ restaurant owner John Bralich said he opted to get the new card readers in August – before the Oct. 1 deadline arrived.

“I did it mainly to protect us from liability if someone’s card is compromised,” Bralich said. “If you don’t have the chip reader, you’re liable for any fraud.”

Bralich said although he thinks it’s unfair how the new rules shift liability from banking institutions to businesses, he also sees the other side of the coin.

“This has been known about for some time. If the technology is available, and you’ve known about it for months, and you choose to ignore it, that’s on you,” he said.

In its news release, the IRMA also cautioned consumers to not let their guard down.

The IRMA said the organization would like to see “chipand-PIN” technology used.

Chip-and-PIN cards have a chip just like the chip-andsign cards, but the chip-andPIN cards hold the cardholders’ personal identification number data.

Requiring a PIN number for every transaction eliminates fraud based on forgery and renders a stolen credit card useless to a thief who attempts to make a purchase at a local store, according to IRMA President and CEO Rob Karr.

LOCAL BRIEF Stabbing victim identified

JOLIET – Dental records have identified a man stabbed to death inside a Joliet mobile home. The man was Robert W. Barski, 60, a deputy with the Will County Coroner’s Office said Saturday.

Barski lived alone in a trailer in the 1600 block of Dianne Drive and was found Tuesday morning when neighbors reported a foul smell to police.

Investigators said Barski had been dead for days before his body was discovered. Police are investigating the death as a homicide, but have not identified any suspects, Deputy Police Chief Al Roechner said Friday.

JOLIET – Recent Will County budget talks have sparked a renewed interest in a 2010 audit that was completed but never released highlighting glaring overtime issues and significant understaffing of correctional officers within the Will County Jail.

In the five years after the audit’s completion, the Will County Sheriff’s Office – which was under a different administration at the time – never released the audit. Instead the 50-page document was categorized as a preliminary draft so it could not be obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request by the media or by the public.

The Herald-News obtained a copy of the report on Thursday, after filing a FOIA request for it Tuesday. Will County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer and Will County Sheriff Mike Kelley said Thursday they did not know why the department would not release it in the past.

It’s unclear how much the county spent to hire the Chicago-based Baker Tilly, an accounting and advisory firm, in 2010 to do the report.

The Will County Board has historically underfunded the sheriff’s department every year, forcing the department to go over on its overtime budget while grappling with understaffing at the jail. Hoffmeyer said Thursday not much has changed since the 2010 audit was conducted and that the jail remains “terribly understaffed” with ballooning overtime costs.

In its findings, the audit cited a “significant staffing deficit” at the Will County Adult Detention Facility, while noting that the jail placed inmates in housing pods on administration lockdown an average of 16.7 times during every four-week period

between November 2009 to September 2010.

At the height of the problem, inmates were placed on lockdown about two dozen times over a four-week period between May and August 2010.

The study noted the jail was understaffed by about 26.4 full-time equivalent correctional officers at its main facility in 2010.

Understaffing and overtime costs continue to be a problem at the county jail, and it’s unclear whether the issues will be resolved in the near future.

The sheriff’s department spent $3.2 million in overtime in fiscal 2014. The department spent $3 million in fiscal 2015, although it was budgeted for only $1.2 million.

While budget talks are ongoing, the sheriff’s overtime line item has been under-budgeted yet again for the upcoming fiscal year. To avoid last year’s political battle over the tax levy, Will County Executive Larry Walsh Sr. proposed a budget with a flat levy.

The proposed spending plan – lacking adequate funding – zeroed out the sheriff’s department overtime line item.

To correct that, the County Board on Thursday voted for an increased tax levy with the intent to allot some of the $1.3 million in increased revenue toward the department’s overtime costs.

County Board Finance Committee Chair Mike Fricilone said he’s asked staff in the sheriff’s department to do a cost comparison for overtime and hiring additional personnel.

“We want to see if it’s a savings to have additional personnel,” Fricilone said.

Contract negotiations between the county and the jail correctional officers have been ongoing for three years, with pay increases and other issues at the forefront.

The J.D. Ross Extraordinary Service Award was established 11 years ago by the JJC Board of Trustees in honor of President Emeritus J.D. Ross.

Fire at McDonald’s closes Louis Joliet Mall food court

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A kitchen fire forced the evacuation Friday morning of the Louis Joliet Mall food court.

Joliet Fire Battalion Chief John Stachelski said about 10:30 a.m. a “fryer malfunctioned” at the McDonald’s counter inside the food court.

“We tried a couple fire

extinguishers, but that didn’t do anything, so we had to pull the [suppression] system and that worked,” Stachelski said.

No one was injured, but the entire food court was filled with smoke, Stachelski said. Each restaurant’s fire systems were being inspected and the rest of the food court besides McDonald’s was expected to reopen Friday afternoon.

The light has been oper-

ating as of 11 a.m. Friday, Joliet Park District Interim Executive Director Matt Pehle said.

“The traffic light was put up primarily as a safety issue,” Pehle said. “It has been done for a while, but the state had to come turn the lights on and sync it with the

other lights.”

JOLIET – The Will County Board voted last week to include new property in its tax levy for the 2016 budget, resulting in an additional $1.3 million in revenue to help cover overtime costs in the sheriff’s department and add money to the county’s now-zeroed-out contingency fund.

The vote was 19-5. Two other options were on the table, including one that left the levy flat as suggested by Will County Executive Larry Walsh Sr. Another option included both new property and the Consumer Price Index, would have raised about $2.7 million.

ues, the taxing levy approved still is below 2014 levy rates, meaning it will lead to a decrease in the county’s portion of homeowners’ property tax bill.

The 2016 budget is set to be voted on at the County Board’s November meeting.

The County Board also voted Thursday to approve the Veterans Assistance Commission of Will County’s move to a larger space at 2400 Glenwood Ave. from its current space at 128 N. Scott St. in Joliet.

In a request to the board earlier this month, VAC Superintendent Kristi McNichol the commission has introduced a number of successful programs and subsequently seen the number of veterans assisted on the rise.

The Veterans Assistance Commission is partially funded by the county. The commission provides needed interim and emergency financial assistance paid exclusively to honorably discharged military veterans and families for basic living expenses, according to the VAC. Under the newly approved five-year lease agreement, rent is increasing from $29,000 to nearly $80,000 annually.

The building has to be remodeled before the VAC can move in.

The building owner, John Bays, is paying for the VAC’s moving costs, said Nick Palmer, chief of staff for the Will County Executive’s Office.

The start date for the lease is December 2015.

Manhattan man ejected in fatal rollover, found 80 feet from vehicle

aschier@shawmedia.com MANHATTAN TOWNSHIP – A Manhattan man who was ejected from his vehicle and found nearly 80 feet away in a cornfield has died.

David D. Reduf, 27, was pronounced deceased at 8:40 a.m.

Friday near Pauling and Barten roads, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office.

Will County Deputy Chief Tom Budde said Reduf was thrown from the vehicle as it rolled over. Police were notified about 7 a.m. Friday.

An autopsy Saturday revealed multiple injuries due to the incident, according to the Coroner’s Office.

The cause of the rollover

has not yet been determined, Budde said, and it remains under investigation.

Budde said the area of Pauling Road where Reduf was driving is coated with gravel and has soft shoulders, so it would be easy for a driver to lose control.

The final cause of death will be determined after completed toxicological, autopsy and police reports are reviewed, according to the Coroner’s Office.

WILMINGTON – Two people were taken to hospitals and New River Road was closed for eight hours after two cars and a semitrailer crashed Friday.

Police Chief Phillip Arnold said the incident happened about 9:45 a.m. as the driver of a 2009 Hyundai, Marcia Baumgartner of Wilmington, was stopped to make a left turn at the Boathouse Road entrance to Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie.

“The driver of a 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe, Michael Snider of Shorewood, struck the Hyundai from the rear, forcing it into the westbound lane of traffic and head-on into the path of a semi tractor-trailer,” Arnold said.

Baumgartner was flown from the scene to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove with serious injuries.

Her condition was unavailable Saturday. The semi driver, Edwin Cook of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was taken to Presence St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, to be treated for minor injuries, Arnold said.

Snider was not injured. “[He] told officers he had been changing the music channel on his cellular telephone and did not see the stopped Hyundai,” Arnold said.

Snider was ticketed for distracted driving.

The ramps from Interstate 55 to New River Road were closed for crash reconstruction most of the day.

Man brandishes gun during confrontation

BOLINGBROOK – A man told police his cheating girlfriend’s other boyfriend threatened him at gunpoint Thursday.

Timothy D. Williams, 22, also hit a police officer who came to investigate the confrontation, which occurred about 2:50 p.m. in the parking lot of Burger King, 331 S. Bolingbrook Drive, Lt. Carter Larry said.

“The victim related he went to Starbucks [immediately south of Burger King] to confront his children’s mother about her cheating

on him,” Larry said.

When the victim and his girlfriend went to discuss their issues in the car, Williams parked directly behind them and approached, Larry said.

“The victim pushed him away at which time Williams brandished a black handgun from his front pocket and threatened to shoot him [but] police arrived,” Larry said.

Williams allegedly hit a responding officer in the arm and ran toward Lily Cache Drive, dropping the gun near some bushes before being caught.

Williams, of the 200 block of Porter Lane, was arrested and booked into the Will County jail on charges of aggravated battery, aggravated assault, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and unauthorized possession of a firearm.

Humidifiers stolen from Romeoville warehouse

ROMEOVILLE – A shipping container with 2,808 humidifiers was stolen last week from outside a warehouse.

Police Cmdr. John Ferdinardo said a railcar container on a trailer was dropped off on the afternoon of Oct. 7 at Lasaint Logistics, 1185 W. Crossroads Parkway, but was missing the next morning.

The humidifiers and the trailer were valued at $164,411.92, he said.

Ferdinardo said Friday the trailer had not been located and there were “no leads” on any suspects.

Taxi driver sentenced for sex trafficking ring

BOLINGBROOK – A Bolingbrook taxi driver has been sentenced to 47 years in federal prison for running a sex trafficking ring in 2010 that forced four victims into prostitution, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

McKenzie Carson, 43, used violence and coercion to force his victims into working as prostitutes in Chicago and nearby suburbs, the release stated. He frequently provided the victims, one of whom was 17 at the time,

with heroin and controlled how much of the drug each victim could use.

A federal jury convicted Carson in 2013 on four counts of sex trafficking, and U.S. District Judge Elaine E. Bucklo sentenced him Thursday to 47 years for each count, with the sentences to run

concurrently, according to the release.

Evidence at trial showed Carson recruited and groomed his victims, used threats and beatings to control them, and often raped them when they broke his rules or disobeyed him, the release stated.

Carson has been in federal custody without bond since his arrest in 2012.

The investigation of Carson was conducted by a multi-agency task force led by the FBI, which included several area law enforcement agencies.

IBCCP program at LaSalle County Health Department

LASALLE – The LaSalle County Health Department, through its Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Program grant, can pay for mammograms and pap smears for women who qualify.

MORRIS – The Morris Area Public Library District has an opening on its Board of Trustees.

At a personnel committee meeting Sept. 23, Trustee Barb Boma submitted her resignation after being appointed to the position in June.

Boma became one of four trustees to fill a seat over the summer when four former trustees decided not to run for another term. Michelle Pruim and Doug Pryor were elected to the board in the April election and were sworn in at the May meeting, while Boma was appointed alongside Linda Jones after an application process.

Library Director Lorene Kennard said she’s unaware of any reason Boma might have given for resignation, as she was not involved in the process. Attempts to reach Boma for comment were unsuccessful.

At the regular monthly board meeting Monday, the

board decided to post the volunteer position with a deadline for submission of Nov. 2, Kennard said.

“We’re looking for a candidate who is community-minded and interested in moving the library forward,” Kennard said.

The board intends to review applications and appoint a new member at the Nov. 9 meeting. The library is seeking someone who is a proponent of technology and interested in budgeting, Kennard said.

Trustees must live in the library district and be age 18 or older.

The new trustee would fill the position until the election in 2017 and then have the option to run for election.

Minooka District 111 hears audit report

Shaw Media Correspondent MINOOKA – The MCHS District 111 school board heard its annual independent audit report Thursday by Mack and Associates accountant Tawnya Mack.

Mack reviewed the district’s finances for the previous fiscal year and reported the district had $243 million in total assets at the end of the year and $14.9 million in cash on hand.

The district also saw an approximate $1 million increase in property tax revenue last year.

There were three significant findings in the school’s financial reporting; however, Mack reported all had to do with deficiencies in preparation.

One finding involved gaps in some items that were not finalized. Another finding was “significant audit adjustments,” mostly in the realm of debt refunding, she said. The other had to do with cash and investment management, as some of the interest was not recorded, she explained.

There were other areas also needing attention, Mack said, such as consistently applying purchase order policy.

An example she cited was employees filling out purchase orders after purchases were made.

Mack said after discussing the matters with staff, including new MCHS Chief School Business Official John Troy, she feels confident improvements will be made.

“I feel these will be corrected,” she said. “I feel like you’re on the right track.”

Also at the meeting, Troy reviewed to-date district finances with the school board. Troy showed budget projections for the fiscal year and where district spending and revenue were at this time compared to the budget.

“We’re on track,” Troy said.

With close to a quarter of the fiscal year passed, 20.76 percent of the budget has been spent. Spending in some funds was quite a bit higher – such as the capital projects fund, which is down 70.75 percent of its budget already this year because of the summer stadium

bleacher and auditorium projects – but others are less than they might be.

Troy told the board he also will be looking at ways to refund some of the district’s $90 million balance in bonds and interest.

The school board also briefly discussed school improvement goals and will consider approving them at the next board meeting. Reading goals could include seeing 75 percent of juniors meeting the College and Career Readiness Standards for Reading and 60 percent reaching the same goal for math.

A financial goal being considered is to promote fiscal responsibility in budget management by aiming for a 1.06 ratio of expense to revenue; a fund balance to revenue ratio of 0.70 or greater; and at least 200 days of cash on hand.

Another goal, if approved, would be to better promote social/emotional growth.

Will County Women’s Bar Association awards scholarships LOCKPORT – Three law students were awarded scholarships Wednesday by the Will County Women’s Bar Association.

The students, who live in Will County, submitted an application to a six-member committee chaired by Judge Susan O’Leary.

Sarah Dankowski, of Joliet, is a second-year student at DePaul University College of Law. Dankowski worked seven years at the Circuit Clerk’s Office,

has served in the Illinois Army National Guard and was on the board of AFSCME Local 1028.

Dana Harold, of Manhattan, is a third-year student at Northern Illinois University College of Law. Harold founded the Justice and Pre-Law Society while attending the University of St. Francis and has worked as an intern and clerk with the Public Defender’s Office.

Anna Nugent, of Manhattan, is a second-year student at John Marshall Law School. Nugent has served as a county judicial extern, assisting the courts and unrepresented parties.

OBITUARIES CHARLES H. BLACKWELL Charles H. Blackwell, age 77, graduated to his eternal home on September 24th, 2015, while at the Kansas City Hospice House, surrounded by his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Barbara; two brothers, Parker and David; and his infant granddaughter, Joy Abigail, precious daughter of David and Molly Blackwell.

He is survived by Ruth, his loving wife of 38 years and his sister, Patricia Barton of Alexandria, VA; his children, Karen Mysel of Hershey PA; Stephen and his wife, Lori of McKinney TX; David and his wife, Molly, and Sarah Mayers and her husband, James both of Kansas City MO; and his grandchildren, Dane, Cole, Kyle, Bella, Nicolas, Samuel, William, Norah, Sophie, Emma and Abi. Chuck was born in Takoma Park, MD. He attended Randolph Macon Military Academy, Bob Jones High School, University of Maryland, Moody Bible Institute, Northern Illinois University and Judson Baptist College where he acquired his BA and two Master’s degrees.

Chuck taught English, American History and coached a variety of sports in the Joliet Township School District High School. During this time he also served in youth ministries, was a chaplain at Silver Cross Hospital, and pastored at churches including Calvary Baptist Church and Homewood Full Gospel.

He founded the Calvary Chapel Ministries and Jesus Give Away Food and Clothing Pantry where he served for 30 years.

Chuck, affectionately known by his friends and family as Chuckles, Daddy-O, and Mr. B, was a champion of the poor, down and out, broken and “shipwrecked.” He saw the redemptive plan of God for every human being and always placed others above himself. He never grew tired of doing good and welcomed the opportunity to lend a helping hand, especially when no one was watching. He will be forever loved and missed by all who knew him. He once said he would like to be remembered as one who tried to love the unlovely.

A memorial service is being held on October 24th at the Trinity Christian School 901 Shorewood Drive, Shorewood, IL with the ser-

vice to start at 11:00 a.m. followed by an old – fashioned Calvary potluck lunch and fellowship.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Calvary Chapel Ministries to be used for the education of Chuck’s grandchildren.

The family of Chuck Blackwell would like to acknowledge and give special thanks to our dear friend Jerry Goergen for his help during this difficult time.

JOHANNA BURCHARDT Johanna Mary Burchardt sadly passed at the young age of 23, on Monday, the 13th.

Hanna, as she preferred to be called, was a beautiful young mother who loved her children dearly. Her son Brayden Thomas, 2, and daughter Gracelynn Elaine, 1, will grow up hearing many wonderful stories of a young lady who will be remembered as being even more beautiful inside than she was outside.

Hanna’s sister Samantha Rose will regale them with countless stories of their mother’s zest for life. Whether they’re about how they used to play dress-up, their little tea parties, going fishing, the years in Girl Scouts with mom as their leader or the years in the YMCA’s basketball league with dad as their coach, there’s no doubt these beautiful memories will put smiles on the kids’ faces. She’ll also have stories about wonderful friendships they shared with others, how their mother went out of her to help and defend others, especially those who appeared to less fortunate than she, and her love for animals, especially her dog Koda.

Hanna’s Parents, Alison Elaine and John Frank, will tell how she was so anxious to be born that she almost came into this world three months early and how unfortunately she left this world way too soon.

They’ll be able to show dozens of homemade birthday and holiday cards illustrating the love she had for her family. There will be all kinds trinkets, photos and mementos that Hanna’s parents will have at their disposal to ensure her children grow up knowing just how special their mother really was.

They’ll be able to brag about Hanna’s incredible skills for organization, hard work, and determination that enabled her to graduate from Minooka High School a year early.

Hanna’s aunts, uncles, cousins, paternal grandmother and great uncle, (Virginia, Walter Kalal), along with the scores of friends whose lives she touched, will always remember for her smile, laughter and big heart; a young woman who fought fiercely for her loved ones, family and children.

Just as she never forgot any of her

loved ones or memories, they will never be able to forget her.

Her final resting place will be next to her maternal grandparents Roger and Aldine Donley at the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Campus, IL. Mass will be held at the Sacred Heart Church in Campus on Monday, October 19, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. and a visitation is scheduled

Francis J. Denneau “Frank”, age 90, passed away Friday, October 16, 2015.

Born July 15, 1925, in Milwaukee, WI, he was the son of Francis X. and Margaret (Sullivan) Denneau. He served with the United States Navy during World War II, and later graduated from DePaul University. He enjoyed a lifelong career in accounting, retiring from Szabo Food Service.

Francis was a member of the American Legion Post #1080 where he was recognized for 70 years of membership in March, 2015. He was also a member of St. Mary Immaculate Parish where he will be remembered as a faithful usher.

He also loved to golf, play cards, and vacation in Wisconsin and Florida.

Survived by his daughters, Joanne (John) Weigt of Batavia, Diane (David) Maxfield of Prior Lake, MN, and Susan Denneau of Darien; three grandsons, Justin (Amelia) Weigt, Jordan (fiancee Jenna) Weigt, and Michael Maxfield; one great-granddaughter, Charlotte Weigt; two step-children, Dianne (Raymond) Kinnary and Ron (Pam) Lyman; two nephews, Tom and Jim Lusciatti; a brother-in-law, Jay Fiday; and many cousins, step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

Mike Fenoglio, Jr., age 85, of Joliet, passed away Tuesday, October 13, 2015, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, Illinois.

He was born November 27, 1929, in Blanford, Indiana, to Mike and Clara (Ponte) Fenoglio. He married Martha Williamson in 1952. For the next 63 years Mike and Martha were seldom seen apart.

Mike was a veteran of the United States Army and the Illinois Army National Guard, Company G, 129th Infantry, 44th Infantry Division.

He was an active member of St. Bernard’s Church, serving on the parish council for many years, as well as organizing many of the parish activities like picnics, pancake breakfasts, and Bingo.

Early in his career, he was the Service Manager for a Joliet automobile dealership, followed by 22 years as Transportation Manager for Chignoli Auto Sales, retiring in 2008. He loved working for the Chignolis, considering them his extended family. He knew the feeling was mutual.

Mike will be remembered most for his undying love and loyalty to his beloved wife, Martha, his knack for telling and retelling great stories and, of course, never refusing seconds at the dinner table.

Surviving are his beloved wife, Martha; his two daughters, Michelle Fenoglio (partner, Sylvie) of Burlington, Ontario and Marcia Thomas (husband, John) of Petersburg, Kentucky; one son, Mark (wife, Judi) of Chatham, Illinois; 8 adoring grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; two nephews, Jim and John Lawson of Joliet and their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Mary Lawson (husband, Russell).

Visitation and a funeral mass for Mike Fenoglio, Jr., will be held at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 1301 Sterling Avenue, Joliet, on Monday, October 19, 2015. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until time of the funeral mass at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery where military honors will be accorded.

Norbert J. McLuckie, 95 of Coal City, passed away October 13, 2015, at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet. He was born on September 5, 1920, in Joliet, IL, to the late James and Mary (Berta) McLuckie. He married Bernice Breimer in

1941.

Norbert was a lifelong musician.

He started his professional music career at age 14 with the Barney Faletti Orchestra of Coal City. He taught music and was involved with many bands in the Morris, Pontiac, and Kankakee areas. He was still playing in the Joliet American Legion Championship and Frankfurt Brass bands.

He served honorably in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII, and continued to fly his own plane until this year. He was the founder and owner of McLuckie Oil Company.

He partnered with his cousin Bill McLuckie in a steel building construction business. Norbert spent several winters in Key Largo, FL. and later, until now, in Winter Haven, FL. He played in various bands in both Florida towns. He was a lifelong member of New Hope Presbyterian Church in Coal City, along with the Masonic Lodge, American Legion, Elks, Midwest Antique Aircraft Club, EAA, and Kankakee Valley and Winter Haven pilot clubs.

A memorial service will be planned in Winter Haven at a later date.

He is survived by his sons, David McLuckie of Coal City and Donald (Teresa) McLuckie of Morris; and his grandchildren, Lisa (Max) Thain of Tucson, AZ, and Scott McLuckie of Morris. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice in 1994; and his sister, Norma Calcaterra.

Memorials may be made to the New Hope Presbyterian Church.

Cremation rites will be accorded.

Janice Sorensen-Cushing, age 60 of Gardner and formerly Mazon, passed away Tuesday evening, October 13, 2015, at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home.

Born June 25, 1955, in Morris, Janice is a daughter of Leah (Male) Christensen of Gardner and the late Russell Sorensen. She was raised and educated in Gardner and went on to earn her associates degree.

She worked for Rockwell and Wescom before gaining employment with the US Postal Service, where she retired as a rural carrier.

Janice was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Gardner.

She enjoyed sewing, crosswords, gardening and softball, and took

pleasure in the outdoors, star gazing and meteor festivals.

SISTER MARY CONRAD STARESINCIC Born in Pittsburgh, PA, Sister Mary Conrad Staresincic was a member of the School Sisters of St. Francis of Christ the King (Lemont Franciscans) for 70 years. Sister served as an educator, administrator, and community leader.

Most recently she ministered to the residents of Alvernia Manor in Lemont.

She is survived by her loving cousins Dorothy Skirtich, Paul Skirtich and Judy Grobes, Jane Grobe, Joanne Saunders, Janet Lefler and Michael Skirtich, Loretta Skirtich, Father John Skirtich, Roseann Popovich, Paul, Peter, and Edward Skirtich as well as her community members.

Sue retired from Crane Kemlite where she worked as an office secretary and phone operator.

Together they operated Ralph and Sue’s Camping by the Chicagoland Motor Speedway. They will be long remembered for their friendliness and hospitality.

UI gives fewer raises amid state budget impasse

CHAMPAIGN – The University of Illinois’ campus in Urbana-Champaign gave out nearly $2 million in raises to 210 professors and administrators this year, which is much less than the $15.6 million granted a year ago to more than 4,900 employees.

The numbers are down because the university put across-theboard raises on hold in July pending the state budget impasse in Springfield, The Champaign News-Gazette reported.

System-wide the University of Illinois gave out $3.6 million in raises at its campuses in Urbana-Champaign, Chicago and Springfield and to administrators.

Officials said the Urbana-Champaign raises range from $500 to more than $150,000. The money went to employees who were promoted, won awards or had other special circumstances.

Vice Provost Abbas Benmamoun said the UI was able to retain about 40 faculty members who received offers from other schools this past year.

The university is continuing to operate under last fiscal year’s budget and the school’s appropriation of state dollars remains uncertain. Officials said it’s too soon to say if across-the-board raises will be reinstated when the state budget is resolved.

CHICAGO – The Illinois Supreme Court has amended its rules of professional conduct to allow attorneys to advise medical marijuana businesses.

marijuana: Illinois allows marijuana for medical purposes; the federal government prohibits it.

The new ethics rules allow lawyers to advise their clients on state law as long as they also advise them about related federal law and policy.

The newly formed Illinois Cannabis Bar Association is applauding the change. Founding member William Bogot said attorneys “no longer have to worry about compromising their ethical obligations” when they help medical marijuana businesses.

The body of the man, identified

by Aurora police as 25-year-old Adam Castilla of Plainfield, was found Thursday when the train stopped at the Aurora Transportation Center.

An autopsy was performed Friday on Castilla’s body at the Kane County coroner’s office. While the results of the autopsy were not immediately available, Aurora’s public information director Dan Ferrelli said Friday heroin has not been ruled out as having been the drug that killed Castilla.

Waukegan teacher accused of having sex with student

WAUKEGAN – A music teacher at a Waukegan middle school is accused of having sex with an underage student.

33-year-old Briana Travis of Mundelein was charged Friday with three counts of criminal sexual assault. She is being held in lieu of $1 million bond.

Travis is a teacher at Webster Middle School.

A statement from the Waukegan police and the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office says the investigation began after a parent contacted authorities about inappropriate text messages between the teacher and a student.

The charges involve an alleged relationship with another student.

Waukegan Public School District 60 says Travis has been placed on administrative leave.

Chess teacher who fought off attacker says class is still on

MORTON – A 75-year-old chess instructor who fought off

a knife-wielding man threatening to kill children at a central Illinois library says this week’s attack will not stop his class from holding its next meeting.

Army veteran James Vernon has one arm in a sling and says his life has been inconvenienced since he disarmed 19-year-old Dustin Brown, who entered the Morton Public Library on Tuesday threatening to commit murder.

But Vernon, who said knife training he received nearly five decades ago helped him in the scuffle, told The Associated Press that he was “not going to let this stop the important activity” of teaching children chess next Tuesday.

Vernon was instructing 16 children when authorities say Brown entered the room with two knives.

WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court has so far resisted elaborating on two landmark decisions that established a nationwide right to defend one’s home with a gun.

That could change with a new appeal filed by gun owners that challenges a Chicago suburb’s assault weapons ban.

The appeal by Dr. Arie Friedman and the Illinois State Rifle Association argues that the city of Highland Park has violated their constitutional rights by banning some of the most popular semi-automatic guns in the United States, as well as ammunition clips of more than 10 rounds.

The justices put off consideration of the appeal last week.

In recent years, the court has almost always deferred action on an appeal before agreeing to take it up.

The court could say as early as Monday whether it will hear the case.

Cleanup underway in wake of California storms

LOS ANGELES – Homeowners in northern Los Angeles County communities were spending their Saturday digging mud out of their houses as crews continued extensive work to clear tons of dirt that clogged roadways and buried hundreds of cars.

The cleanup follows thunderstorms that unleashed flash flooding and debris flows on

Thursday, damaging dozens of homes and trapping hundreds of cars on area highways and roads.

No injuries were reported.

Kerjon Lee, a spokesman for Los Angeles County Public Works, said 50 field personnel and more than 30 pieces of heavy equipment were on the ground in the small mountain communities of Elizabeth Lake and Lake Hughes in Leona Valley, about 40 miles north of Los Angeles.

He said in that area alone, crews need to clear out 20,000 dump trucks worth of dirt, which could take months. The dirt eventually will be used to backfill eroded canyons.

Senior al-Qaida commander killed in Syria

BEIRUT – An airstrike has killed a top al-Qaida commander and two other fighters in Syria, activists said Saturday, but it was not immediately clear whether it was carried out by the U.S.-led coalition or Russian warplanes.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Abdul Mohsen Abdallah Ibrahim al-Charekh, a Saudi better known as Sanafi al-Nasr, was killed Thursday in an airstrike near the northern Syrian town of Dana, along with another Saudi and a Moroccan member of al-Qaida’s local affiliate, known as the Nusra Front.

Russian warplanes have been carrying out airstrikes in Syria since Sept. 30.

The Associated Press ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Interior Department announced Friday it is canceling future lease sales and will not extend current leases in Arctic waters off Alaska’s northern coast, a decision that significantly reduces the chances for future Arctic offshore drilling.

The news follows a Sept.

28 announcement by Royal Dutch Shell that it would cease exploration in the Chukchi and Beaufort seas after spending upward of $7 billion on Arctic exploration.

The company cited disappointing results from a well drilled in the Chukchi and the unpredictable federal regulatory environment.

Interior Secretary Sally Jewell said the federal government is canceling federal petroleum lease sales in U.S. Arctic waters that were scheduled for 2016 and 2017.

“In light of Shell’s announcement, the amount of

acreage already under lease and current market conditions, it does not make sense to prepare for lease sales in the Arctic in the next year and a half,” she said.

Jewell said the Chukchi Sea off Alaska’s northwest coast and the Beaufort Sea off the state’s north coast will not be included in the agency’s next five-year lease sale plan. In addition, current leases held by Shell and other companies in Arctic waters will not be extended.

Beaufort Sea leases are set to expire in 2017, and Chukchi Sea leases in 2020.

Current market conditions and low industry interest made the leasing decision easier, Jewell said in a release.

Royal Dutch Shell PLC is the only company actively exploring off Alaska’s northern costs. It had applied to extend leases in both the Chukchi and the Beaufort. Statoil requested an extension for Chukchi leases.

Smith said the company disagrees with the agency’s decision not to extend current leases.

“When it comes to frontier exploration in Alaska, one size does not fit all,” Smith said by email. “We continue to believe the 10-year primary lease term needs to be extended.”

In denying the extension, the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement’s regional supervisor for field operations, Kevin Pendergast, said Shell had not met the criteria to extend its leases, including providing the agency with a work schedule on them. Shell could apply again, he said.

Independent Gov. Bill Walker met with Jewell in Washington, D.C., earlier this month about extending Shell’s leases and opening up a small part of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to drilling. His goal is to get more oil in the trans-Alaska pipeline, which is running at about a quarter of its capacity.

According to the Illinois Association of School Boards, school districts have received 145 new mandates since 1992. The mandates cover everything from classroom content to holidays to most recently, civics.

In August, a bill was signed into law that requires at least one semester of civics for high school students to graduate. Many Will County educators opposed the bill, saying it is unnecessary as it already is in district curriculum.

For Bugg, the bigger impact of state mandates is not just money, but time and resources for things that may not be fit for Coal City students.

He said Coal City and Grundy County has a strong blue collar community and it’s important for high school students to attend the Grundy Area Vocational Center. More stringent graduation requirements from the state could obstruct that.

He would support Rauner’s initiative to eliminate mandates but what he would support more is local control. School districts have an elected board that meets the needs of the community and local control cannot be taken away from the state Legislature, he said.

In 2012, U.S. consumers accounted for 47.3 percent of worldwide payment card fraud losses. Paone said consumers should keep in mind that the new cards are not bulletproof.

Which to choose: Lump sum or monthly income?

Dear Mr. Berko: I’m single and retiring at the end of the year from Alcatel-Lucent. The company has offered me a lump payment of $181,000 or a guaranteed monthly income of $1,020 when I retire. What to do? Three stockbrokers are very persuasive and advised me to take the lump sum, saying I could earn much more than $1,020 each month on that money. One broker, at J.P. Morgan, insists he could earn $1,700 each month using an options technique. His fee is 1.5 percent yearly. It sounds complicated, but his explanation makes it sound simple to do. Few can, and over the years, I’ve heard horror stories so egregious that the brokerage firms reimbursed the clients without arbitration. It’s difficult to get trustable and suitable investment advice when broksters’ bosses set the example for probity.

If you think the salespeople at these firms will always give you a fair shake, then you may still believe in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. I’d rather write nice things than bad things, but there are some brokers we call incompetent articulates.

They’re smooth as licorice, and their hearts are blacker than the wings on a rain crow.

They have ice water in their veins, and many strive to become images of their CEOs – Brian Moynihan, Jamie Dimon, Lloyd Blankfein, etc.

Investors must be careful out there because finding a trustable, wise, experienced and caring broker is more difficult today than it was a decade ago.

Unless you have a knowledgeable friend or know a

professional whose opinion you can trust, finding the proper broker is like finding a proper spouse. For many of us, selecting the right spouse takes years of trial and error before we pop the question.

And about half of us wish we hadn’t. Many folks divorce and start over again, but the costs are often crippling to their finances and their psyche. And so it can be when picking the wrong broker.

LEMONT – Members of TeamCITGO, the employee volunteer team at the CITGO Lemont Refinery, helped Shady Oaks Camp in Homer Glen prepare its grounds this summer for more than 60 special needs campers.

Shady Oaks Camp holds its beautification day annually to refurbish its 30-acre facility for children and adults with physical and developmental disabilities. This year, several volunteers from the Lemont Refinery participated in this day of service. CITGO employees focused their efforts on landscaping projects including the areas around the cabins where the campers would be staying.

To help the camp fund its operating costs, the CITGO Lemont Refinery has recruited outside contractors to help with long-term facility projects, such as replacing light fixtures throughout the campsite and digging trenches for drain tile.

State should work with Lockport to keep museum open The city of Lockport would like to keep the local branch of the Illinois State Museum open during the state’s budget impasse.

However, because of the ongoing budget battle between Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner and the Democratic-controlled General Assembly, state government is insisting on paying the rent – just so it can keep the museum closed.

That makes no sense. Not for Lockport, which pitches the downtown museum as a city asset to potential developers. Not for state taxpayers, who are being used as a political pawn in the fight between Rauner and legislative leaders.

The museum’s future has been precarious for months.

The gallery was emptied over the summer because of a lapse in the state’s insurance. The city and museum came together to create “The People’s Exhibit,” a show highlighting public art made in reaction to the Illinois budget crisis. The contents of the exhibit were under the city’s insurance.

The city had been covering the rent for the space at 201 W. 10th St., appropriating funds from its Summer Art Series after the state’s lease ended Aug. 1. That allowed the series to continue. The money ran out Sept. 31, and Mayor Steven Streit said he was willing to pay rent again.

In late September, Rauner ordered the Illinois State Museum system, including the Lockport Gallery, to shut its doors. In October, the Illi-

nois Department of Natural Resources expressed interest in handling rent payment so it could keep the institution closed.

Streit said his long-term hope is the state museum remains in Lockport, even if it’s not in the same spot. It helps with economic development in downtown, Streit said. It’s one of the city’s assets he can mention when interested parties consider Lockport as a place to invest.

“We just started to turn it around,” he said. “Money has been put into State Street reconstruction. We have investors coming in, and we are having good conversations to redevelop further buildings.”

The museum is one more feather in the city’s cap, Streit said. It attracts visitors, who will then visit shops and restaurants. It allows residents access to state museum collections without having to go to Springfield.

“If we lose that, the plume and the hat starts to go away,” Streit said.

Streit said as long as the state pays for the museum’s employee, he can find space in Lockport for cheap or even free.

We hope the state is willing to work with Lockport on this. We want a state budget in place as much as anybody.

Rauner said he wants to improve Illinois’ economy and make our state a better place to do business. By playing political games with the Lockport branch of the state museum, he’s doing the opposite.

A debate of real issues The candidates in Tuesday’s Democratic debate were all winners – especially in the sense that it was a very satisfying debate. I don’t think anybody at any point was thinking, “This really needs Vice President Joe Biden.”

The crowd at the Democratic debate was perhaps the biggest audience so far that former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, former Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee and former Virginia Sen. Jim Webb played to. But I don’t know if these “lesser lights” candidates did anything to make people want to come see them in the future.

Sanders got a lot of applause breaks, but his biggest one was for agreeing with Clinton that everyone is tired of hearing about her “damn emails.” When Chafee tried to make an issue of the emails and Clinton was asked if she wanted to respond, she just said, “No.” That got the best response of the night.

She should have saved that one for the House Select Committee on Benghazi, aka “Let’s Bring Down Hillary’s Poll Numbers.”

To the Editor: I agree and applaud the Oct, 7, 2015, letter to the editor (“Pope’s visit a wakeup call”) in which the author emphasized that the pope was for all Americans. It was a message of unity and of caring.

O’Malley came off very well, especially with his closing remarks, but was it good enough to change people’s minds? (And not many people’s minds are settled on O’Malley).

Webb got the least amount of time, and he spent most of that time complaining about how he didn’t get as much time. It’s best not to draw undue attention to being slighted.

You know you’re at a Democratic debate when the participants are bragging about how low their National Rifle Association ratings are.

In that sense, the NRA even has influence over Democratic politicians – they’re all fighting to earn bad grades

from the NRA. Sanders tried to defend himself with his “D-” grade from the NRA, but O’Malley and Chafee both trumped him with their “F’s.” Poor Jim Webb had to wear his “A” rating like the scarlet letter.

People discovered Chafee was a Republican until recently, and, at times, that Webb sounded as if he were a Republican right now. (Well, he was Secretary of the Navy during Reagan’s administration).

Overall, there was a lot of agreement on the issues.

There was definitely a lot of nodding going on. The Democrats proved that you don’t need Trump in order to make interesting television.

I know that the producers of “The Celebrity Apprentice” are hoping that’s true.

This debate might not have changed a lot of people’s minds, but I guarantee it stimulated their minds. This debate was more engaging than the Republican debate because there is a better

This debate made me think of what Apple’s Steve Jobs once said: “Be a yardstick of quality. Some people aren’t used to an environment where excellence is expected.” These candidates

strove for excellence. Each of these five Democrats showed a grasp of the issues in detail.

And Clinton and Sanders, in particular, showed they could be sharp-edged with each other without throwing playground insults.

The Democratic debate also showed that the Demo-

crats have a wider spectrum of views, ranging from Webb’s Southern conservatism to Sanders’ Brooklyn populism. And while there was agreement on many principles, there were also real differences of opinion – from the greatest danger to our security to gun laws.

Each of the candidates had a firm grasp on their values and their positions, and imparted confidence that none need a learning curve upon entering the presidency.

These five know and accept that our Founding Fathers, after trying the alternative, constructed a federal government. Well, that was interesting. And now, it’s back to watching the Republicans fall to pieces in the House of Representatives.

To the Editor: The peaceful existence along Peotone-Wilmington blacktop has ended.

It has been replaced with the rumble, pounding and engine braking of semi-tractor trailers.

The truck drivers continue to exceed the speed limit without any deterrence and have left their skid marks at almost every intersection along the stretch of road between Route 53 and Peotone.

It seems the county law enforcement that used to patrol that strip of road has become nonexistent.

I spoke to our current sheriff about the problem of speeding trucks before his election to the office. His response was, “I have a plan.” I guess that meant to pull the patrols off the road and let the trucks drive at whatever speed they want. Some travel in excess of 70 mph.

I think if we could hold the speed to the 55 mph limit, some of the truck traffic might go away, their speedway compromised. Although I hate to suggest it, there is only one stop sign between Route 53 and Peotone, adding to the ability to pick up the excessive speed.

The Iliana highway was the most logical

solution but now that that has been nixed, something else needs to be done – and soon.

The remarkable grab was the fourth TD reception for Jarosz, who caught five passes for 109 yards. Ekowa completed 13 of 22 for 277 yards and five touchdowns, beginning with a 75-yard strike to Niko Capezio on the first play from scrimmage. The quarterback also rushed for a net 48 yards.

Jarosz’s other TD receptions covered 10, 21 and 32 yards. Ekowa was 5 of 9 for 187 yards and three touchdowns in the first quarter alone.

“We wanted to play wide open right away,” Kane said.

“We have good receivers, and they have a good defensive line.

After a while, we did have some protection problems.”

Jarosz and Ekowa emphasized that none of the fireworks

happen without the offensive line of Mitch Dodd, Nathan Lindroth, Luke Glynn, Bret Johnson and Tony Little, from left tackle to right tackle.

“All the credit goes to the offensive line,” Jarosz said.

“They’re the foundation of our team.”

Block’s pick-six, on a play where Ari Ekowa applied heavy pressure to Oswego quarterback Steven Frank, was

his second of the game. Frank completed 19 of 38 passes for 244 yards and netted 45 yards rushing, but the two interceptions by Block and one by sophomore safety Dillon McCarthy – along with Johnny Goodson’s forced fumble and recovery – were huge.

“That’s a Division I quarterback they have in Frank,” Kane noted. “Our DBs battled, and our defensive front did, too. At the end of the game, we made the big stops.

“This certainly is a big win.

It’s a statement on how hard we’ve worked. The kids showed great character coming back after they took the lead.”

Joliet West keeps playoff hopes alive with OT win

Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – Joliet West dug itself out of a 21-0 first-quarter hole Friday night, came back to force overtime and scored a huge, 28-27 SouthWest Suburban Blue victory over Stagg.

Jakob Coyl ran for 171 yards on 23 carries, including the all-important 10 yards on three carries in overtime. He scored four touchdowns. After

his overtime touchdown, Brian Epps kicked the extra point to make it 28-21.

Stagg then took its turn on offense and scored a touchdown. The Chargers went for a two-point conversion and the win, but the Tigers’ defense made the stop on a sweep at the 2-yard line to end it.

West (4-4, 2-4) needed the victory to keep its playoff hopes alive. The Tigers also must win next week at Lock-

port.

“I told them at halftime, the lone survivor, Marcus Luttrell, how did he survive?” West coach Jason Aubry said. “He put a line out there, and when he accomplished getting to that line, he drew one farther. That is what we have to do. Little by little, we can do it.”

West fumbled on its first three possessions, and Stagg converted the turnovers into a 21-0 lead.

“Turnovers never help you,” Aubry said. “We gave Stagg a short field, and they used that to their advantage.

We were not doing the little things. We did not hold onto the ball, and we failed to tackle.”

The Tigers got on the board with 6:16 left in the second quarter on a 5-yard run by Coyl. He scored again with 1:15 left in the half on a 2-yard run, which was set up by a 68-yard

pass from Jaxon Aubry to Xavior Smith (eight receptions, 147 yards). Coyl’s third touchdown tied it at 21 with 9:33 left.

West’s defense held Stagg to 55 yards rushing and 34 yards passing in the second half.

“You have to believe in yourself and your team,” Aubry said. “When one part of the team is doing well, it can give confidence to the other. Helping each other makes the team better.”

PLAINFIELD – As incredible as his fourth touchdown reception of the night was, Plainfield North receiver Zach Jarosz said it has been practiced.

“Honestly, in practice, that’s all we do,” Jarosz said after his one-handed grab in the end zone put the Tigers back ahead of Oswego, 30-25, midway through the fourth quarter Friday. “Practicing the one-handed catch gets my hands warmed up. It must have been a sign when we practiced it all the time.”

With a Kevin Block 24-yard interception return for a touchdown moments later, North was celebrating a 37-25 victory and grabbing a share of first place in the Southwest Prairie with Oswego and Plainfield South, which will meet next week in the season finale.

The loss was the first in the SPC for Oswego (6-2, 5-1) since the final game of the 2010 season. The Panthers had their 33-game conference winning streak snapped.

North (6-2, 5-1) scored three touchdowns in the first six minutes for an 18-0 lead and was ahead, 24-6, early in the third quarter. However, Oswego mounted three consecutive scoring drives, the last after a Tigers fumble on a kickoff return, to grab a 25-24 lead with 9:11 left.

That lead stood for the rest of the half, as the Coalers blocked another field goal attempt, this time by Alec Leasure, to go to intermission with a 3-0 lead.

“This was a frustrating game,” Onsen said. “On one hand, it is hard to fault our de-

fense. We only gave up seven points, and a lot of those kids worked their tails off.

“On the other hand, we had some situations that the defense could have gotten the offense the ball in better shape, but we would give up a first down or two and the field position would change. In a game like this, field position was huge, and Lisle won that battle

tonight.”

Lisle received the second-half kickoff and put together a 12-play, 80-yard drive, capped by a 4-yard run by quarterback McGrath. His kick then gave the Lions a 7-3 lead.

Late in the fourth quarter, Coal City forced a punt and took over on its 26. The Coalers reached into their bag of tricks

and threw a lateral to receiver Christian Johnson.

Johnson, who also is the backup quarterback, stopped and threw deep to Littleton, who caught the ball for a 61yard gain to the Lisle 13. On third down, though, a pass into the end zone was intercepted

by Lisle and returned to the 48.

A punt went into the end zone, and Coal City took over at its own 20 with 22 seconds left. Four straight incompletions followed the game ended.

“We just couldn’t get much going offensively,” Onsen said.

“Lisle wasn’t that big, but they were very quick to the ball.

“We still have a game left, and we will get back to work.

If we don’t have the playoff points, we still want to finish the year on a high note, so we are far from done.”

Irish lose fifth straight against hosting Reapers

Shaw Media Correspondent PLANO – Seneca lost its fifth straight game, 48-23, at Plano Friday night, even if the Fighting Irish did not always look the part of a team playing out the string.

Much of its offensive output came at garbage time, but Seneca amassed 297 total yards to 440 for Plano (7-1). The Irish ran 64 offensive plays to Plano’s 42 and had only a 17-15 deficit in first downs. Seneca largely avoided mistakes, with no turnovers and only two pen-

alties accepted by the Reapers.

“Certainly proud of some of the guys we have left,” Seneca coach Ted O’Boyle said.

“We’ve had injuries left and right, and we’ve got guys subbing in and playing hard, and it was really great to see some kids get in there and have some success in that game and still play hard. Coach (Brad) Kunz – class guy – he subbed out, too, but our guys are still playing hard, and I’m proud of the effort for sure.”

After Seneca (2-6) went three-and-out on its opening series, Tyler Draine recovered

a fumble of the resultant punt to give the Irish another try.

Peter Hogue turned the turnover into points by making a 32-yard field goal.

The 3-0 lead lasted for all of 14 seconds as Plano’s Elijah Maisonet returned the ensuing kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown. The Reapers then forced another Irish punt and were in the end zone again four Jay Winter runs later.

After another Irish punt, the Reapers again needed four more plays to score on a Tyler Ward pass to Sergio Chavez, although they were then held

out of the end zone for the final 8:12 of the opening half.

Winter broke a 64-yard touchdown run on Plano’s first offensive play of the second half, however, and the Reapers added touchdowns on their next two drives as the Irish offense did little. The third touchdown made it 41-3 Reapers with 3:38 left in the third, and the clock would have kept running had Plano’s conversion pass attempt not fallen incomplete off the outstretched hands of a receiver.

“They had a really good game plan starting out. They

just did their job,” Kunz said of the Irish. “Unfortunately, we had the slow start, but I think we just needed to get in a rhythm.”

Given the chance to extend the game, the Irish did just that. Casey Pifer had a 4-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter, and Draine added scoring runs of 5 and 78 yards in the final minutes.

Draine ended up tied with Winter for the individual rushing lead for the game with 142 yards, although Draine did all of his damage in eight second-half carries.

COAL CITY – Coming into Friday night’s game against Lisle with a 4-3 record, Coal City football coach Lenny Onsen wanted his team to pick up its fifth win, then win next week at Seneca to secure a sixth victory and have no doubt about making the playoffs.

Unfortunately, Lisle had different ideas, as the Lions won a defensive struggle, 7-3.

It put Lisle at 6-2, ending a sixyear playoff drought.

Both teams played strong defense all night. Lisle forced Coal City to punt on the opening possession of the game and was able to drive to the Coalers’ 14 on the resultant possession. A field-goal attempt of 30 yards by Mark McGrath was good, but Lisle was whistled for illegal procedure, and the ball was moved back 5 yards. This time, Coal City’s Mike Chiarappa broke through the line and blocked McGrath’s attempt, leaving the game scoreless.

After another Coaler punt, Lisle fumbled, and Coal City’s Mike Pampuch recovered at the Lions’ 39. The Coalers (4-4) got as far as the Lisle 11 before stalling, and Brad Littleton

Indians blank Bengals in SSC Blue showdown

Shaw Media Correspondent LEMONT – Of all the oneon-one showdowns that made the difference in Lemont’s 35-0 South Suburban Blue rout of unbeaten Oak Forest on Friday, the most compelling pitted the Indians’ Jeremy Fejedelem against Nick Czeszewski.

At 5-foot-11, Fejedelem gave away three inches to the foe from Lemont’s biggest rival, but nothing else. Whether it was Fejedelem at wide receiver and Czeszewski at cornerback, or vice versa, it was a sight to see.

In the end, the kid in blue wearing No. 2 outpointed the kid in white wearing No. 1.

Fejedelem scored twice, first on a 19-yard end-around to open the scoring, and later when he beat Czeszewski cleanly and hauled in Spencer Nagel’s 20yard pass in the left corner of the end zone for a 21-0 lead.

“I really respect him,” Fejedelem said of Czeszewski.

“That was pretty much the first time in my high school career I got to experience that high-level play one-on-one like that. I give him credit, he got me on one, on a pick, but I think I made up for it.”

The touchdown strike was Fejedelem’s only catch, but the Czeszewski catch he spoke of was his only one as well, and it was nowhere near the end zone.

The roll call of Indians contributing to the outcome includes Nagel (8 of 13, 137 yards), whose long interception was more than offset by two touchdowns; Tyler Swann, whose perfect seal block on Fejedelem’s rushing score was straight from the textbook, and a defensive line that held the powerful Bengals to 59 rushing yards, 6 in the second half.

“That was one of the best blocks I’ve ever seen from a wide receiver,” Fejedelem said of Swann’s block. “I really didn’t do much.”

All of the above means Lemont, having authored two straight shutouts, has to play hard again next week. If the Indians (7-1, 5-0) beat T.F. North

(4-4, 2-4), they win the SSC Blue outright, and with it, the automatic bid to the playoffs.

They’re in already, of course, as is Oak Forest (7-1, 4-1), but there’s the postseason seeding and pride involved in this. T.F. North must win for a shot at the playoffs.

“I truly didn’t expect that score,” Lemont coach Bret Kooi said. “Defensively, I think we’ve played pretty good all year long. Offensively, we’re starting to get production and capitalize on the field position our defense gives us.

“Scary thought, but I think there’s a another level [the offense] can go.”

It was a thorough trouncing in a series where the road

team had won the previous five games. Overall, Lemont held Oak Forest to 95 yards. The Bengals came in having scored 281 points, allowing only 107.

Fejedelem’s 19-yard scoring rush off left end capped a fiveplay drive 2:27 into the game.

Following Oak Forest’s second straight three-and-out, the Indians made it 14-0 on Steven Fleming’s 32-yard reception from Nagel midway through the quarter.

The Nagel-to-Fejedelem collaboration came with 2:36 left in the opening half. Jake Kirkman and Matt Dunne added rushing touchdowns in the second half.

Lemont’s sophomores won, 31-0.

Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – In a game Plainfield South had to win to keep its playoff and conference championship hopes alive, the Cougars answered the call Friday night with some quick, impressive work.

South (5-3, 5-1) scored on its first offensive play and scored on three of the first four offensive possessions in jumping to a 28-0 first-quarter lead. The Cougars extended it to 49-0 at half and never looked back en route to a 49-7 victory over Southwest Prairie foe Plainfield Central.

“Our kids don’t overlook Central,” South coach Ken Bublitz said. “We’re the two oldest Plainfield high schools, and we usually have some fierce battles.”

The Cougars (5-3, 5-1) scored in all three phases in the game, while the defense forced two turnovers, collected two sacks and allowed 92 total yards of offense. Fifteen of Central’s 25 running plays were for either zero or negative yards.

Offensively, the Cougars were led by Jake Maher (seven rushes, 67 yards), Danny Saracco (three rushes, 39 yards, two touchdowns), quarterback Nicholas Deppe (6 of 8, 120 yards, touchdown) and Christian Carrillo (four receptions, 94 yards, touchdown).

Defensively, junior defensive back Joseph Yanke had a 40-yard interception return for a touchdown. On special teams, Mitchell Ganassin returned a punt 50 yards for a score.

Cameron Cercone completed 6 of 21 passes for 91 yards and a touchdown for Central (0-8, 0-6) while Nathaniel Graves had two catches for 57 yards and a touchdown.

The Cougars’ defense forced a three-and-out on Central’s opening possession, and it resulted in the offense getting the ball inside the Wildcats’ 20. On the next play, Saracco went in for a 14-yard touchdown. “[Danny] Saracco does a great job on both sides of the ball,” Bublitz said. “He is relentless and is one of our leaders.”

“We had a great week of practice this past week, and we knew they were down,” Saracco said.

Veshan Ward’s 11-yard touchdown run made it, 14-0, with 7:28 left in the opening quarter. Saracco scored his second touchdown, running for a 25-yard score that gave South the lead at 21-0 with

3:02 left in the quarter.

On Central’s next play, Cercone’s pass deflected off his receiver’s hands and was caught by Yanke, who returned it 40 yards for the touchdown. That effectively broke the game open at 28-0 with 2:41 left in the first quarter.

After yet another threeand-out by Central, Nick Portz scored on a 5-yard touchdown run that for a 35-0 lead with 11:02 left in the half.

Saracco’s sack of Cercone ended another Wildcats series that set the stage for Ganassin’s 50-yard punt return for a touchdown and a 42-0 lead with 8:45 left in the half.

Central had little success on the ground throughout against South’s defensive line. Cercone connected with Graves on a 50-yard touchdown to make it, 49-7, with 3:55 left in the third quarter for the Wildcat highlight.

This week, South travels to Oswego. Plainfield North beat the Panthers Friday, so there’s a three-way tie for first in the SPC. “I know our kids will be ready,” Bublitz said. “It’s a big challenge, but I know that we will be up for it.”

“We like to tell our kids that the water is going to beat the rock. Their big kids were pounding us, but at the end, we came out on top. It was a nice game to play and coach in since it was challenging, and that’s the way it should be. They’re a well-coached team with good athletes so we didn’t expect for them to lie down at all. But we also know that we’re pretty talented.”

The Knights (4-4, 3-3), who must win at 7-1 Thornton next week in order to reach the playoffs for a second straight year, grabbed a 3-0 lead just 2:49 into the contest on Brock Krohe’s 29-yard field goal. But North responded with three straight touchdowns, capped off by a

45-yard interception return by Jimmy Vallos.

Central, which was led by senior quarterback Austin Strilko (13 of 21, 129 yards), rallied with a 47-yard strike from senior Nolan Hayes to senior Ryan Foster (three catches, 69 yards) on a reverse and then got a 30-yard fumble return from senior defensive lineman Bryan Ditchman within a span of just 20 seconds to tie things with 4:35 left in the half.

“They’re a good football team, give them credit for that,” Knights coach Jeremy Cordell said. “Our kids played well in the first half and did a lot of good things. We were extremely physical the whole game, and I’m proud of that. Our kids

“On the other hand, we have to find ways to make big plays against really good football teams, and that was the difference. They made some big plays and that translated for them.

We’re going to put together our best week of practice and are going to play a good opponent in Thornton and just get after it.”

North, which clinched a share of the SWSC Red title and hosts 7-1 Lincoln-Way West next week, got two more touchdowns in the third quarter to break things open.

One was a 43-yard pass from Jake Arthur (14 of 18, 207 yards) to Pat Troike (six catches, 116

yards) and the other was a sneak by Arthur. The Phoenix didn’t have to use their top offensive threat, Jaylin Branch, who got injured in last week’s win over Thornton.

Among the Knights’ leaders on defense were Jake Dudeck and Ditchman, who each had two tackles for losses. Others with multiple stops included seniors Casey Dobczyk, Steven Podkulski, Eric Ramos and Zach Rudsinski as well as Jacob Pott and Blake Evans.

Dropping the home finale is tough, especially for 27 players who were honored as seniors.

The game had special meaning for Hayes, whose family has deep ties to the school.

“We knew that we had a challenge and we tried our best and put up a good fight,” Hayes said. “That was my second touchdown pass of the year. Me and Bryan are good buddies so his fumble return was really cool and no one was taking him down. But we let up a big play at the start of the second half and that changed the momentum.

“I grew up watching this program. My dad (Steve) used to coach and both he and my older brother played here. Obviously, there’s a lot of history with my family, so it’s tough.

But we played with all of our hearts and gave it our all and we just came up short.”

Hawkins carried 29 times for 203 of Wilmington’s 323 rushed yards. Owen Weaver had 15 carries for 118 yards.

Peotone was led by Panning (six catches for 84 yards, two TDs) and Maupin (8 of 21 for 109 yards, two TDs). Corey Vincent led the defense with 10.5 tackles.

NEW LENOX – Needing one victory in its final two games in order to clinch a playoff berth, Lincoln-Way Central put itself in a position to do just that on Friday by rallying from an 18-3 deficit to tie things at 18 late in the second quarter against unbeaten Lincoln-Way North.

But the Phoenix responded to the threat by getting a long scoring drive just before the break and then returning the opening kickoff of the second half for a touchdown as they spoiled the Knights’ senior night by capturing a 45-18 SouthWest Suburban Conference Red win.

North (8-0, 6-0) capped a 12-play, 80-yard drive with a one-yard run by Joe Peters (24 rushes, 129 yards) on fourth and goal with eight seconds left in the opening half for a 25-18 lead.

And then they got a 96-yard kick return from Colton Pedersen to open the final half.

“At no point did we say that this was a game that we could relax in since you can’t look past anyone, that’s not our M.O.,” Phoenix coach George Czart said. “I don’t blame us at all for the first half. We were playing a team that was out there fighting, hitting hard, playing tough and fighting for their playoff life. But in the end, we persisted.

Hilltoppers suffer first loss to Redwings

That’s what Joliet Catholic coach Dan Sharp told his team after Benet upset the Hilltoppers, 24-21, Friday night in an East Suburban Catholic game.

JCA trailed, 24-14, with 2:45 to play before mounting a nine-play, 63-yard scoring drive. Quarterback Cade Earl hit receiver Bill Rotnicki with a 19-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 24-21 with 1:26 to play.

The Hilltoppers did not recover the ensuing onside kick, and Benet ran out the clock.

JCA (7-1, 5-1) never led and the Redwings (6-2, 4-2) bottled up Hilltoppers running backs Michael Johnson (86 yards)

and Ke’von Johnson (72 yards).

Earl threw three touchdown passes to account for JCA’s scores, two to Rotnicki and one to Michael Johnson.

The Hilltoppers turned the ball over four times in the second half. Michael Johnson fumbled twice and Earl was intercepted twice. JCA also was penalized nine times for 92 yards.

“Benet played very well.

They tackled well. They got off their blocks well,” Sharp said.

“It seemed every time we got something going offensively, there would be a penalty or they would create a turnover.

“You’re not going to win many games against a good team when you turn the ball over four times. We never got into a rhythm offensively.”

Benet led, 7-0, after the first quarter, but JCA tied it at 7, when Earl found Michael Johnson with a 14-yard touchdown pass to cap a 10-play, 80yard drive with 10:55 to play in the second quarter.

The Redwings scored on the opening possession of the third quarter to make it 14-7.

Ryley Guay nailed a 32-yard field goal with 7:28 left in the third quarter to extend the lead to 17-7.

JCA cut the deficit to 1714 when Earl threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Rotnicki with 11:54 to play in the fourth quarter. The Hilltoppers’ Luke Phelan then recovered an onside kick to put his team in business at the Benet 47. JCA moved the ball to the Benet 32 before turning it over on

downs.

Benet scored the clinching touchdown with 4:16 to play when, on a fourth-and-1 at JCA’s 21, Jack Sznajder hit Charlie Weidenbach over the middle for a 21-yard scoring strike to make it 24-14.

The Hilltoppers’ defense did its part to keep their team in the game. Zach Lukasik, Ken Aguirre and Ze’veyon Furcron recorded sacks, while Phelan was a one-man wrecking crew out of the secondary. The senior recovered a fumble and intercepted a pass in addition to recovering the onside kick.

“On the fumble, Riley O’Donnell forced the fumble, I was just trailing the play and hopped on it,” Phelan said. “On the onside kick, I was actually not supposed to be on the field,

but Bill Rotnicki was tired, so I came in. I had a feeling the ball was going to be there, so I just went where the ball was, saw it on the floor and dove on it.

“On the interception, I had a great jam by cornerback Nick Sandora, and I made a play on the ball.”

JCA finishes the regular season Friday when it hosts Marist.

“I feel very confident we’re going to bounce back,” Sharp said. “This is a lesson learned.

You can’t turn the ball over.

You have to come out and go hard every play.

“Our kids never quit. I think in a couple of weeks we will look more like the team we were when we started the season when we get a lot of our players back [from injuries].”

Indians give up 17 unanswered points in loss to Wolves

ksharp@shawmedia.com OSWEGO – With time running out on the regular season, Minooka traveled to Oswego East on Friday night for a pivotal Southwest Prairie Conference game with playoff ramifications for the identical 4-3 squads.

Oswego East scored 17 unanswered points to secure a 17-8 victory and all but crush the Indians’ hopes at a postseason bid. Minooka sits at 4-4 overall and 2-4 in the SPC heading into the final regular-season game against Plainfield North.

“Every game is a must-win.

We knew this was an important game,” Minooka coach Paul Forsythe said.

Minooka linebacker Kenny Kirkland gave the Indians an early spark when he blocked a punt by Oswego East’s Chase Bruns and returned the ball into the end zone. Quarterback John Carnagio connected with Jacob Adams for the two-point conversion, and Minooka tried to set the tone with an early 8-0 lead with 5:11

to play in the first quarter.

But for the remaining three quarters, the Minooka offense sputtered. Oswego East scored on a 28-yard connection from Jaylon Banks to Kaelub Newman to get within 8-7 early in the second quarter. Minooka held the slim lead until Bruns kicked a 36-yard field goal with 4:37 left in the third quarter, giving Oswego East a 10-8 edge.

The Indians recovered a late Oswego East fumble on the Minooka 7, but the offense moved the ball just 13 yards and turned it over on downs.

Five plays later, the Wolves scored on a 1-yard quarterback keeper for the final score.

“Defensively, it seemed like we were on the field the majority of the night,” Forsythe said. “Offensively, we struggled a little bit up front.

“Our defense really stepped up and played hard tonight,” Wilson said. “We have been looking for a big win like this all year.”

Taylor scored on a 40-yard touchdown run with 2:17 remaining, after the Raiders’ seventh turnover, an interception by Gabe Lammers.

“This game was a highlight for our seniors,” Taylor said. “We have been working on that flea-flicker play all week in practice, and it worked.”

“We finally put a team away when we had the opportunity,” Porters coach Dan Starkey said. “We battled, played 48 minutes of football.

I’m proud of our kids and our coaches. It was a physical game, and we really mixed up the pass and run well tonight.

Bolingbrook has one more chance for its fifth win this week at Homewood-Flossmoor.

“We know what we have to do next week. Nobody is quitting here,” Raiders coach John Ivlow said. “You can’t win a game with seven turnovers.

“But there were also two major calls tonight that caused a 16-point turnaround, botched calls by the officials, and I’m not happy with that.”

Spartans’ defense ends Redskins’ playoff hopes

sports@dailychronicle.com SYCAMORE – Morris’ state playoff chances disappeared after losing to Sycamore, 28-7, Friday night.

Morris (3-5, 0-4 in the Northern Illinois Big 12 East) entered Friday’s football game at Engh Field in need of a win to keep playoff hopes alive. But Sycamore’s defense had other ideas on senior night.

The Spartans (5-3, 3-1) displayed a stout defense by allowing only one touchdown to Morris. One way to play tough defense is to dominate the line of scrimmage, and that they did – Morris had 13 plays that resulted in 3 yards or less.

“We played pretty well on defense tonight, and we made enough big plays to make things happen,” Sycamore coach Joe Ryan said. “Obviously, Matthew’s [Coovert’s] interception for a touchdown and his other big interception return down the sideline helped us out a lot. Our defense played outstanding.”

“It’s kind of been the story for us all year,” Morris coach Alan Thorson said. “Our defense has been solid for most of the year and has kept us in games, and our offense has given us some trouble. Give credit to Sycamore, though. Their coaches always have a good plan, and tonight, the better team won.”

Friday’s win puts Sycamore near the top of the list in playoff points, so regardless of next week’s results, the Spartans most likely are playoff bound.

BOLINGBROOK – With only four wins and the state’s No. 1 team looming next week, a victory was vital for Bolingbrook on Friday as it faced a Lockport team looking to be the spoiler.

But for the first time since 2009, the Porters came away with a victory over the Raiders, 33-16, in a SouthWest Suburban Conference Blue matchup.

Bolingbrook (4-4, 3-3) scored on the third play as quarterback Joseph Coates ran 68 yards.

After a three and out by the Porters (3-5, 3-3), Bolingbrook put together a 10-play drive that resulted in a 26-yard

field goal by Gino Carcerano for a 10-0 lead at the 4:36 mark of the first quarter.

Lockport scored on a 20yard touchdown pass from Ben Davis to Patrick Cooper with 7:28 left before the break to make it, 10-7.

Then an interception by the Porters’ Derrius Rodgers at the Raider 33 led to a 24yard touchdown run by Matt Skobel, and the Porters had a 14-10 lead. It would be the first of seven turnovers for Bolingbrook.

“I saw the quarterback staring me down, and when he threw the ball I knew I had to make a play,” said Rodgers, who also recovered a Raider fumble in the second half. “That was a big momentum change for us. We had to

Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – Lincoln-Way East senior quarterback Brandon Bauer completed nine of his 10 first-half passes for 190 yards and two touchdowns in Saturday’s 70-0 SouthWest Suburban Blue victory over Joliet Central.

East running backs Liam Morrissey and Nigel Muhammad each scored a pair of first-half touchdowns. Jake Jasto had a 25-yard pick-six, and backup quarterback Jack O’Brien (3 for 3, 84 yards, two touchdowns) connected on a 54yard TD pass to Luke Angel.

Reserve backs Kyle Werniak and Brody Bolsoni scored first-half touchdowns. And Bolsoni rushed for a game-high 85 yards, leading East to a 63-0 halftime lead. O’Brien hit Steve Barrett with a 26-yard pass to complete the scoring.

The first-team defense for the Griffins (6-2, 5-1) held Joliet to 16 yards rushing and minus-1 passing.

Jasto, Sean Maloney and Ryan Reed had interceptions. Reed intercepted at the goal line in the third quarter and returned it 60 yards.

“It was great to see everyone play and contribute,” defensive lineman Ben Christensen said. “Our reserves work very hard every day in practice to help us get better, and it was awesome to see them reap some rewards.”

Bauer connected with Jayison McCorkle for a 54-yard scoring strike in the first quarter, when the Griffins went up, 35-0.

“I had a good day throwing,” Bauer said. “The line gave me tons of protection, our receivers caught my passes, and our running backs all contributed.”

A shining light for Joliet Central (0-8, 0-6) was Jamari Butler, who rushed for 81 yards on 13 carries. Much of his yardage came on the lone Steelmen scoring drive, which ended with Reed’s interception.

“At halftime when the score

was 63-0, Coach [Brett] Boyter challenged us to step up and play with heart,” Butler said. “I took up the challenge and ran as hard as I could with hopes of getting us into the end zone. Although we were outmanned, we never stopped playing hard.”

“We must get to the point where we are in position to make the plays,” Boyter said. “Although Lincoln-Way East has more talent than we do, we still are not getting into position to make the plays. Jamari [Butler] had a great game. We have three goods backs with Jamari, Ernest Grant and Malek Harden. I feel we match up very well with our next opponent, Stagg [1-7, 0-6].”

For East, Friday means a visit from Sandburg (6-2, 5-1).

“This was a great tune-up for Sandburg,” East coach Rob Zvonar said. “We were able to play everyone, and everyone played to the best of their abilities. I am especially proud of the defensive reserves, who preserved the shutout.”

Shaw Media Correspondent NEW LENOX – With 2:24 remaining in Friday’s SouthWest Suburban Red battle between Lincoln-Way West and Bradley-Bourbonnais, the Boilermakers scored on a 15-yard pass from Austin Piwoni to Will Conway.

After Camron Harrell’s twopoint conversion run, the Boilermakers trailed, 21-18. On the ensuing onside kick, an illegal-kick penalty gave the Boilermakers another attempt. The second kick appeared to be recovered by Bradley, but the Boilermakers were called for illegally touching the ball before it went 10 yards.

West (7-1, 5-1) received possession at the Bradley 30-yard line. With 18 seconds left, West quarterback Connor Lowman hit tight end Ben Zordani (five catches, 30 yards) from 7 yards out, and Kevin Siemeck’s fourth extra-point kick gave the Warriors a huge, 28-18 victory.

Tailback Gabe Montalvo ran for 222 yards on 34 carries and scored the first two West touchdowns. The offensive line was led by 6-foot-5, 280-pound Bryan Brokop (Nebras-

ka recruit) and 6-7, 275 Justin Witt (N.C. State). Yet on numerous occasions, Montalvo was hit near the line of scrimmage and ripped off big gains after contact.

“Being a wrestler, I have developed a never-quit attitude on the wrestling mat,” Montalvo said. “I take that attitude onto the football field, and it helps me achieve yardage after contact. My outstanding offensive line and wide receivers blocking downfield allow me to do what I do.”

With Bradley (5-3, 3-3) leading 7-0 in the first quarter, a key play occurred. Siemeck’s punt was muffed and recovered by Joey Velasquez at the Bradley 32. On the next play, Montalvo raced 32 yards for the tying score. Then with 10:42 left in the half, Montalvo’s 14-yard touchdown run gave the Warriors a 14-7 lead.

Second-quarter interceptions by defensive backs Josh Bohne and Cameron Gavin ended Bradley possessions.

“I was not going to let them score,” said Gavin, who intercepted in the end zone. “I just took the ball away from their receiver. This was a great victory and gives us the opportunity for a share of the con-

ference championship with a win over our rivals, Lincoln-Way North, next week.”

Lowman (11 of 16 passing, 82 yards, two touchdowns) hit fullback Tom LaBerry (four catches, 29 yards) from 5 yards out to make it a 21-10 lead with 1:34 left in the third quarter, “This was a great victory,” Lowman said. “Our defense was great.

Deven Reed was all over the field, and what a huge interception from Cam Gavin in the end zone.”

Lineman Reed led the defense with 14 tackles, including three sacks. Linebacker Trey Telez added a sack and repeatedly pressured Boilermaker quarterbacks.

“It is always a battle when we play Bradley,” West coach Dave Ernst said. “Our defense was outstanding, led by Deven Reed. Cam Gavin’s interception in the end zone was huge. And what can you say about Gabe [Montalvo]? He plays tailback with a wrestler’s mentality.

“It will be awesome next week at North that we have a chance to get a share of the conference championship. We couldn’t have asked for anything better.”

Seniors lead Plainfield East past Romeoville

Shaw Media Correspondent PLAINFIELD – While Southwest Prairie adversaries Plainfield East and Romeoville entered Week 8 out of the playoff picture, the Bengals turned to their seniors for motivation to play hard.

East coach Mike Romeli said his team’s game plan was to rotate running backs and put players into position to succeed. With that in mind, the Bengals succeeded Friday night, beating the Spartans, 47-19, on senior night.

“This group of seniors has won a lot of games, and they deserve this,” Romeli said.

“We fought hard every week, but we didn’t have some things go our way. We just kept talking about progressing and playing our best game, and tonight we played well.”

As the Bengals’ offense took the field for their opening drive, senior quarterback Matt Mazurkiewicz didn’t waste time getting his team on the scoreboard. He targeted senior tight end Dylan Koch for a 35-yard touchdown.

On the subsequent drive, Mazurkiewicz hit senior wide receiver Jalen Hutt for a 9-yard touchdown to make it 12-0 for East (35, 3-3).

“He really has progressed throughout the year,” Romeli said of Mazurkiewicz, who went 13 of 20 for 163 yards. “From Week 1 to Week 8, he’s a different guy.”

Romeoville (1-7, 1-5) answered with a drive capped by Jordan Nettles, who scored on a 16-yard run to make it 12-7. On the Bengals’ ensuing possession, however, running back DJ Donofrio (nine carries, 106 yards) scored on a 45-yard run to put East on top, 19-7.

“The offensive line blocked awesome tonight,” Donofrio said. “I was just reading and making my cuts.”

After a safety made it 21-7, the Bengals converted their next possession into a 1-yard touchdown run by senior running back Troy Mayon for a 28-7 lead entering halftime.

East continued its dominance in the second half as Donofrio and Hutt found the end zone again to make it 41-7.

Romeoville scored on a 36-yard run by Tyree Allen (three carries, 70 yards) and a 73-yard pass from Anthony Kitchens (8 of 18, 194 yards) to Jordan Nettles (four receptions, 110 yards).

A 14-yard touchdown pass from Matt Pratscher to Tremaine Hoover sealed the victory for the Bengals.

“They have some good players,” Romeoville coach Oliver Gibson said. “They have a good scheme, and they execute. I credit their coach managing the game and keeping us at bay.”

On the girls’ side, Minooka placed its top five in the overall top 10 of the race and easily won with 26 points. Oswego was second (55), followed by Plainfield North (57) and Plainfield South (107). Plainfield East was sixth, followed by Plainfield Central and Romeoville.

The Indians were led by the one-two finish of Ashley Tutt (16:54) and Mackenzie Callahan (17:19). Emily Shelton was sixth (17:44), followed by Vivian Van Eck seventh (18:09) and the 10th-place finish of Morgan Crouch (18:17).

“This is great to win the conference,” said Crouch, the only senior among the Indians’ top seven runners. “This team is just like a family, today was fun, I love this course, and the weather was great.”

Callahan, who took some needed time off, responded well to the rest. “I felt so much better today. But this is all about our team, winning today and continuing to get better as we move forward,” she said.

“Conference is always a goal,” Minooka coach Kevin Gummerson said. “You really want to be on a roll at this time of the season. I’m proud of the way we competed, and our 4-5-6 runners ran outstanding.”

Plainfield North placed three runners in the top 10, as Rachael Lau was third (17:23), Juliana Stogsdill took fourth (17:31), and Megan Patton finished ninth (18:11).

SHOREWOOD – The success of a cross country team is not necessarily up front, but where your fifth runner places.

That was the case at the Southwest Prairie Conference meet Saturday at Hammel Woods.

Plainfield South won the boys meet with a score of 58, four points better than second-place Minooka and eight points better than third-place Plainfield North. Oswego came in fourth with 67 points. Romeoville was sixth, followed by Plainfield Central and Plainfield East.

Cougar freshman Christian Knowlton was told Friday afternoon he would run in the varsity race and placed 19th (15:56) as the Cougars’ fifth runner to key the victory.

“I was happy that I was going to run in the varsity race,” Knowlton said. “I felt like I really needed to step up and help the team.”

Senior John Partee (15:20) led the Cougars with a second-place finish, running the last two miles of the race with only one shoe.

“I lost my shoe at the mile mark,” Partee said. “It really wasn’t that bad, except for the gravel parts of the course. We have always wanted to win as a team, and this is great. This is really special for everyone on the team.”

Austin Brown placed ninth (15:35), Andy Bhatia was 12th and Hunter Dyer finished 16th for the Cougars.

“I’m so happy for these kids,” said South coach Jason Crowe, who was ecstatic when he found out they had won.

“They battled today, they have bought into our training and are really believing in themselves. John (Partee) is our leader, and he ran his best race of the year so far.”

Minooka’s Soren Knudsen was the individual champion, covering the three-mile course in 15:14.

“I lost my shoe at the mile mark. It really wasn’t that bad, except for the gravel parts of the course.”

cherron@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Pardon the girls tennis players who competed at Saturday’s Plainfield North Sectional for feeling as if the state finals had begun a little bit early.

With the addition of 2014 sectional champion Neuqua Valley to a similar meet won

by Joliet Catholic last year, earning a top-four spot to qualify for next weekend’s finals in the northwest suburbs figured to be challenging.

Although Neuqua made an impact – as seen by its 24-19 win over JCA for top honors – there were many similarities to last year’s sectional, with the top-three singles players finishing in the same order and the doubles champions repeating while another doubles player again took third place.

In a rematch of last year’s sectional singles title, Joliet Township sophomore Eileen Carney got past Plainfield North sophomore Gabby Ochalik, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).

“I’ve never seen Gabby play that well,” Carney said. “I’ve played her a lot of times, and that was by far the best that she’s played – she was amazing. I couldn’t hit it to her forehand, because I knew if I did, it would be a winner. I won the match by a hair.

“I feel really confident now.

I wasn’t playing so well last week or earlier this week, so I was just trying to get every ball back, and I had to do a lit-

The pair of three-time Angels qualifiers will be joined again at the state meet by teammate Nina Bertino. The JCA senior is making her fourth state appearance, including a third-straight trip in singles, after beating Neuqua’s Jessica Chen, 6-4, 6-3, for third place.

“We’ve been playing together for so long, and we just keep improving each year,” Hutchison said. “We each have different strengths, and we work together and also move together really well. It’s just so great to be playing with your best friend.

“I think this year at state will be our best. It’s going to be hard, but we like good competition. We want to make a statement this year by doing the best that we’ve ever done.

We’re all so close and play together all of the time, so being able to go to state together again will be so fun. It’s amazing for Nina to be going to state for her fourth year. I think that’s awesome.”

North, which took third place with 17 points, again will be represented at state in doubles by Kendall Junger. The Tigers senior and junior Meg Chadick edged Neuqua’s Mikala Gerdes and Hannah Beck, 6-1, 0-6, 6-3, in the third-place match.

DECATUR – Neuqua Valley’s Jessica Yuen, the twotime defending Class AA champ who lives in Bolingbrook, hoped to become Illinois’ first three-time medalist Saturday during the girls golf state final.

But the Wildcats senior fell one stroke shy after posting a two-day total of 145 to tie for second with Hinsdale Cen-

tral’s Jessica Lee, one shot behind champion Madasyn Pettersen, the sophomore from Rockford who won this summer’s Illinois Women’s Open at Mistwood.

Yuen also was a runner-up as a freshman. She becomes the first player in state history to capture two firsts and two seconds and also the first large school player to record four straight top-four finishes.

Another athlete from the

area, Benet Academy freshman Lauren Beaudreau, who lives in Lemont, finished two strokes back at 146, which was good for fourth place. She becomes the Redwings’ second all-stater and first since 1999.

Lincoln-Way Central freshman Brianne Bolden shot a 163 to tie for 34th place. Lemont freshman Maggie Micetich fired a 165 to tie for 40th, and Providence Catholic junior Alyssa Gromala finished with a

166 to settle for a tie for 44th place.

In the boys Class 3A final at Bloomington, Providence junior Ricky Costello shot a one-under 71 Saturday to finish with a 152 total, which was good for a tie for fourth. As a result, Costello, who took sixth last year, becomes his program’s first two-time medalist.

Minooka junior Dan Anfield shot a 159 to tie for 31st.

Providence (659) took ninth.

Juniors Michael Cascino (165) and Zach Bilotta (169) and senior Jack Walsh (175) also scored.

In the Class 2A competition at Normal, Lemont finished 12th with a 678. Sophomore Raymond Sullivan shot a 152 to tie for 12th. Morris senior Nick McPherson finished tied for 35th with a 160, and Joliet Catholic sophomore Jake Pluth tied for 43rd place with a 165.

Wade Davis survived a shaky ninth for Kansas City after Luke Hochevar and Danny Duffy were solid in relief of Yordano Ventura. Kelvin Herrera breezed through the eighth.

“Our guys never quit. They keep going,” Royals manager Ned Yost said.

St. Francis’ winning streak ends at 5

dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – For most of the first half Saturday afternoon at ATI Field at Joliet Memorial Stadium, the University of St. Francis had everything going in the accustomed direction.

The 19th-ranked Saints – who came in No.1 in the NAIA in rushing defense, No. 3 in total defense and No. 2 in turnover margin – had marched 75 yards to a touchdown after receiving the opening kickoff.

They turned Dekota Doerr’s fumble recovery and 49-yard interception return to the Truman State 11-yard line into two more touchdowns.

They were leading their NCAA Division II opponent, 20-0, with 9:55 left in the second quarter and were on the verge of securing their sixth straight victory after a 34-28 season-opening loss to Saint Xavier. However, the visitors flipped the switch, mounted a huge third quarter while op-

erating against the wind, and claimed a 24-20 victory.

“We just didn’t finish,” USF coach Joe Curry said. “The turning point was the third quarter. I took the wind, and they dominated. That tells the tale. And, we didn’t make enough plays all day in any phase of the game.”

Big issues for the Saints (5-2) in the fateful third quarter – when Truman State (3-4) scored three times to turn its 20-3 halftime deficit into a 24-20 lead – were turnovers and the inability to shut down the Bulldogs’ running game. Truman State enjoyed a 21-14 edge in first downs and 384-215 advantage in total yards.

After driving 65 yards to a score on the opening possession of the second half, Truman State scored two plays after Austin Zoda intercepted USF quarterback Don Butkus to get within 20-17. Three plays later, Jordan Brown picked off Butkus, who finished 12 of 23 for 98 yards and a touchdown, and

The Saints had two opportunities to retake the lead in the

fourth quarter, but both fizzled.

They faced a fourth-and-3 at the Truman State 17 and failed to convert early in the quarter.

With 8:17 left in the game, St. Francis safety Mikail Davis came up with a wild interception. The ball was on the back of the intended receiver, who was on the ground, and Davis

dove on it and secured it without allowing it to touch the ground.

The Saints then drove to a fourth-and-2 at the Truman State 5-yard line. They employed a formation where eight of their 11 players were near the left sideline. Tailback John Magee, who rushed for 71 yards and a touchdown in 22 carries, came in motion toward the center of the field, took a pitch and moved to the right. He turned upfield and was stopped about an inch short of a first down at the 3. That was the last hurrah.

“That was a run/pass option for John,” Curry said of the fourth-down play. “He was reading the corner. If he came up, he throws it to Sheldon Magee. But the corner stayed back, so he turned it up. We were maybe an inch short, but it never comes down to one play.

“We faced a good Division II team and should have beaten them. We had a good team. To be a great team, we have to do that.”

Northern Illinois had 311 yards on the ground, while Drew Hare passed for 203 yards and a touchdown. The Huskies punted only twice all game.

scoring passes, the second the 10-yarder to Robinson that made it 38-31.

The Fighting Irish (6-1) bounced back from an embarrassing 35-point loss to USC in the regular-season finale last year. The victory looked in doubt when the Trojans (3-3) scored three straight touch-

downs to take a 31-24 lead. But the Irish rallied to win the Jeweled Shillelagh for the third time in four seasons.

It marked the first time in seven tries the Irish beat the Trojans after losing by 30 or more the season before.

Cody Kessler threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score for USC, but the Irish picked him off two passes in the fourth quarter to put the game away.

In a game of shifting momentum, the Irish scored 40 points against the Trojans for the first time since 1977 when Notre Dame warmed up in blue jerseys, then came out in green jerseys and won, 49-19, en route to the national championship.

The Trojans lost consecutive games for the first time since losing three straight to end the 2012 season. USC has three losses this early in the season for the first time since

starting 1-4 in Pete Carroll’s first year as coach in 2001.

The loss also adds to the mounting troubles the Trojans are facing with a game next week against No. 4 Utah followed by a game at No. 23 California. USC athletic director Pat Haden was feeling lightheaded just before kickoff and was taken to the locker room.

NEW YORK – Matt Harvey, Daniel Murphy and the New York Mets have a mind to make some history of their own, the kind that would break Cubs hearts one more time.

One out later, Yoenis Cespedes charged Javier Baez’s sharp ground single to left and cut down Castro at the plate by a couple of steps to keep the score tied at 1.

That helped Harvey out of trouble – and he got some good fortune, too.

The Cubs hit several line drives that were turned into outs, including one that prompted Harvey to duck quickly out of the way and another that struck the pitcher in the back of the head.

Harvey threw to first for the out and immediately waved off Mets trainer Ray Ramirez, who came out to check anyway with manager Terry Collins before leaving Harvey in the game.

It was his game, indeed.

OLIET – The Joliet Junior College Friday Night Wine Pairing dinner on Friday is the secondto-last such event for a while.

The college’s culinary arts department will offer one more in the spring semester.

Both are part of the department’s Friday Night Out Dinner Series. The series will be suspended after the spring 2016 semester, said Susan Stockwell, supervisor/ meeting coordinator at JJC. “It will come back when the new building opens,” Stockwell said, referring to the City Center Campus building that is slated for a January 2017 opening.

JJC chef instructor Timothy Bucci said the series should return in spring 2017.

The Friday Night Out Dinner Series is served each Friday at the Joliet Junior College Renaissance Center in downtown Joliet. The dinners this semester began in September and will continue through December.

The regular dinner events are menu-based, open to the public and priced per item, ranging from $15.95 to $25.95, Stockwell said.

“Every week we have a new menu and we’re on different stations, so that everyone has a chance to do some of the really highpaced areas,” said culinary arts student Megan Kuk of Plainfield.

However, once each semester, the department offers a special Friday Night Out, in which students design a multicourse dinner.

Each course is paired with wine – and explanations – from the chef instructors and students.

Students in two different classes – Advanced Ala Carte Cooking (fall semester) and Advanced Professional Cooking (spring semester) – work on the Friday Night Out Dinner Series as well as the

That was the case for Kuk, who is on her last semester at JJC and hopes to concentrate on pastry one day. She is particularly intrigued with the theme of Friday’s dinner – American Regional – as the wine-pairing for those dishes can be less predictable.

“Each course is going to be based on a different re-

gion of the U.S.,” Bucci said.

“American Regional is not necessarily something you automatically think of as a wine-pairing thing.”

At Friday’s dinner, the students will feature regional ingredients, not necessarily regional dishes. Bucci said the regions were chosen for being less well-known culinary-wise.

For example, the second course is from the North Pacific of the United States and the entree course is from

the Midwest.

“I wanted to showcase the Midwest,” Bucci said. “It’s a little bit of a heavier type of cuisine.”

The entree is a cherry beer-braised pork shoulder.

The cherry beer is from Wisconsin.

About 110 people can be seated for the Wine Pairing Dinner on Friday. So far, 60 tickets have been sold, but culinary arts graduate Javier Reyes said if you want to attend, buy your ticket soon.

“The other day I actually went to a Friday Night Dinner just to have dinner myself and I had to finagle to get a seat,” Reyes said. “People are really trying to get in there [before the hiatus].

I really encourage people to get a reservation and go.”

Reyes, who graduated in May, works as a purchaser in the culinary arts program on the main JJC campus.

He will be serving wine at the dinner on Friday. It will be the third time he has done so.

Students at Oakwood Elementary School in Lemont who demonstrated responsible citizenship throughout September were recently celebrated. One student in each class was recognized for his or her outstanding efforts. Lawn signs were then placed in the yards of nine students (three students per grade level) this month.

Sixth-graders Caroline Pender, Tricia Barker and Kara Rimkunas made a table tennis game out of cardboard, tape and other recycled materials. Students at Caroline Bentley School have been participating in The Cardboard Challenge in the Bentley Makerspace. The Bentley Makerspace was funded by a grant from the NLSD122 Foundation. Students make original creations out of cardboard and share their creations with other students at Bentley.

D-202 has four National Merit semifinalists

PLAINFIELD – Plainfield Central High School senior Phoebe Snydersmith, Plainfield North High School seniors Emily Terian and Paul Wilkens and Plainfield South High School senior Amanda Swanson are among about 16,000 National Merit Scholarship 2015-16 semifinalists nationwide.

The 2015-16 school year is the 61st year of the program, which honors academically talented high school seniors and lets them compete for 7,400 National Merit Scholarship awards worth more than $32 million. The awards will be announced next spring.

About 15,000 of the 2015-16 semifinalists are expected to be named finalists, and about half of the finalists will be named National Merit Scholars.

To become a National Merit finalist, students must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the school principal, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier qualifying performance.

JOLIET – Joliet West High School seniors Miguel Gutierrez and Clayton Pelzer have been selected as semifinalists in the 61st annual National Merit Scholarship program.

To qualify, Gutierrez and Pelzer displayed outstanding academic Miguel records, received endorsements Gutierrez and recommendations from Joliet West officials, wrote essays, and earned SAT scores that confirmed their earlier performance on the qualifying test.

Indian Trail Middle School eighth-graders mentor sixth-graders

PLAINFIELD – Indian Trail Middle School eighth-graders are using a “PAWS On” approach to help ease the transition for new sixth-graders from elementary to middle school.

Indian Trail Assistant Principal Jennifer Archer created the PAWS – Positively Affecting Wildcat Success – mentoring program three years ago.

Eighth-grade mentors help sixth-graders all year long by answering their questions, providing tutoring, being a friendly face in the new school crowd. The goal is to make sixth-graders feel welcome. Seventh-grade teachers specially pick the PAWS Pack mentors – 65 this year – to reflect a mix of students showing leadership abilities, including English language learner and special education students.

Indian Trail is the only District 202 middle school using this type of mentor program. Several high schools use a similar national mentor program called Link Crew to help freshmen feel more at home in high school.

JOLIET – Ninety members of the Kiwanis Club and guests celebrated the 95th anniversary of the Joliet Club, founded in 1920, during Centennial and Installation banquet held Oct. 1.

Kiwanis International, dedicated to service to children, issued its first charters 100 years ago.

Outgoing President Nick Macris said the club grew by 20 percent this year with 12 new members, completed its primary fundraiser Peanut Days, and instituted a second, successful trivia night fundraiser this past spring, pledged to support the eradication of worldwide maternal tetanus over the next five years and continued its flow of scholarships for Joliet high school students, as well as literacy programs in five Joliet schools.

Macris honored nine veteran Kiwanians for an aggregate total of 423 years of service: Mike Kelly, Jim Norris, Bill McMennamin,

Marty Terlep, Larry Grant, Ralph Sherman, Elmer Geissler, Rich Snyder and Keith Peters.

The club installed its new officers and board members for 2016: President David Gardner, Secretaries Karla Guseman and Vince Portlock, Treasurer Michelle Gier and Immediate Past President Nick Macris. Board members include David Kaller, Terry Kunze, Vince McGirr, and John Kilday (for one year), and John Bohrer, Mike Kelly, Kathy Green and John Zalanka (for two years.)

Division 23 Lt. Gov. Mark Hornung issued the James Reed Award to Kathy Hartung of Joliet for exhibiting the Kiwanis Spirit.

Hartung heads the club’s Priority One literacy program, which has put books into the hands of over 800 children this year in five Joliet schools.

Congressman Bill Foster read into the Congressional Record Tuesday on Capitol Hill the accomplishments of the Kiwanis Club of Joliet. Illinois Senate Resolutions also marked the 95th anniversary of the Joliet Club.

D-86 gets supply donations The HERALD–NEWS JOLIET – The Joliet Chapter of the AT&T Pioneers through their “Tools for Learning Campaign” donated new backpacks and school supplies to students at M.J. Cunningham, Edna Keith, Farragut and Sator Sanchez elementary schools.

In addition, 14 local Chase Banks collected school supplies for District 86 students to assist with the beginning of the school year.

The banks that participated included: Channahon,

Crest Hill, Joliet (Jefferson Street), Joliet (Scott Street), Lemont, Lockport (Farrell Road), Lockport (Jewel), Morris, Plainfield (Downtown), Plainfield (Route 59 and 135th Street), Romeoville (Phelps Avenue), Romeoville (Weber and Airport roads), Shorewood (Route 52), and Shorewood (Route 59).

At the bridge table, adhering to contract-making rules shouldn’t trump good play-making.

This week, we have seen declarer in a position to try to win a trick by ruffing or overruffing. Here is one last example. South is in four hearts. West leads the diamond nine. East wins with his ace, cashes the diamond king, and continues with the diamond jack, which West ruffs with the heart six.

Should South overruff in the dummy or not?

In the auction, South’s double followed by the two-heart rebid shows a Big Double: some 18-20 high-card points and at least five hearts. So North has enough to jump to game.

Note East’s abnormal play in diamonds, which was sending a suit-preference signal for spades to his partner.

Declarer seems to have 10 easy winners: one spade, five hearts and four clubs. And an overruff at trick three could provide an overtrick. But with the blocked club suit, South is in potential danger if the defender long in trumps is also short in clubs.

No doubt you saw that South’s safest play is not to overruff in the dummy at trick three. Instead, he discards a spade.

Declarer wins the next trick with his spade ace, draws two rounds of trumps, cashes his clubs, plays a heart to dummy’s ace, and takes the two club winners for his contract.

With this layout, if South greedily overruffs at trick three, he will go down.

If your risk of having silent CAD is high, for you the benefits of aspirin are greater than the risks. If your risk of CAD is low, the risks of aspirin are greater than the benefits. In those at low risk, aspirin is more likely to cause bleeding in the stomach, intestines, joints and brain than it is to prevent a heart attack.

So how can you tell what your risk of having CAD is? You can actually do a good job of estimating it. We link to several online calculators on the Harvard Health Publications website: www. health.harvard.edu/147.

If you don’t use the Web, have someone do it for you.

These calculators ask about your age, gender, cholesterol, smoking, blood pressure and other risk factors. Using that information, they calculate your risk of having a heart attack in the next 10 years. Recent research suggests that taking aspirin has the most benefit if your 10-year risk is above 10.6 percent. If it is below 6 percent, the benefits are small. My risk is currently 16 percent, and I take a daily aspirin. I also exercise every day and eat a healthy diet -- most of the time.

But don’t start taking aspirin on your own: Talk to your doctor. The risk of bleeding complications from aspirin rises with age. Men are about twice as likely as women to have gastrointestinal bleeding. Your doctor will be able to help you weigh the benefits against the risks.

Dear Reader: Your question seems simple enough, and I wish I had a simple answer. The problem is that aspirin, like virtually all medical treatments, has benefits and risks, and they are different for one person than for another. The main risk of aspirin is bleeding.

For some people, the decision to take aspirin is easy. If a person has coronary artery disease – blockage of the arteries of the heart – he or she should take aspirin. The same is true if someone has had the type of stroke caused by a blood clot (called an ischemic stroke). In these cases, the benefits from aspirin are far greater than the risks (unless someone has an allergy to aspirin, or a bleeding tendency).

Coronary artery disease (CAD) causes heart attacks, but many people who have this disease have never had a heart attack. If their doctor has told them that they have CAD, they should take aspirin -- even if they have never had a heart attack. Why? Because it will greatly reduce their risk of ever having one.

So far, so good. Now comes the more complicated part. You could have CAD, or a similar disease of the arteries in the brain (which increases stroke risk), and not know it. You could have what’s called “silent” CAD. It hasn’t caused you any symptoms, so your doctor hasn’t checked for it. Unfortunately, silent CAD is common.

Dear Abby : I have been hosting Thanksgiving for most of my married life -44 years. When my children married, I told them we could celebrate all the holidays whenever and wherever they chose, but I wanted Thanksgiving.

Two years ago, my daughter-in-law asked to spend Thanksgiving with her parents and sister, and I reluctantly agreed. Her mom was battling cancer, so I said she could have Thanksgiving with her parents.

This year I received an email that SHE will be hosting it at her house with her parents and hoped we would come!

I was upset that she didn’t even discuss this with me. I sent her an email back saying I would like to have Thanksgiving at my house and she and her parents were invited.

I haven’t heard from her and I’m afraid she’s mad.

Frankly, I don’t want to go to her house, but I don’t want to alienate my son and two grandkids.
