Cost of a college shouldn’t defer the American Dream

Friday was a day more than 13 years in the making: I made my final payment on my student loan.

I took out the loan in August 2001 when I entered the Public Affairs Reporting master’s degree program at the University of Illinois at Springfield. I was blessed (and eternally grateful) that my middle-class parents paid for my undergraduate degree (offset by scholarships).

I have no regrets about taking out a loan for grad school. The experience I gained – the degree included six months covering the state Legislature reporting for a news bureau in the Illinois Statehouse – was invaluable. I use now what I learned then.

I’m lucky in that I was not saddled with the amount of debt many recent college graduates have: The average debt for graduating seniors with student loans in 2012 was $29,400, according to the Project on Student Debt. That was a 25 percent increase from $23,450 in 2008. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York reports that two-thirds of student loans are held by those under 40.

True, having a higher education usually means finding a higher-paying job. In 2012, the annual median earnings for a young adult with a bachelor’s degree was $46,900, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. Those with a high school

degree had an annual median earning of $30,000 while those without high school had a median of $22,900.

There are numerous societal benefits to a higher education. According to Education Pays 2013, a report by the College Board, those with a college education lead healthier lifestyles, reducing health care costs. All levels of government get increased tax revenues from college grads and spend less on income support programs for them, according to the report. And an educated population makes it easier for governments to lure new businesses.

Given that, it’s perplexing how hard the United States makes it to get a higher education, especially for those from low-income families.

Tuition increases faster than inflation and higher education funding is constantly on the governmental budget chopping block. It’s hard to save for the future when prices continue to climb today and finding a way to pay for the here and now becomes more of a struggle for many.

One wonders what other countries – such as Germany, which finances higher education for its citizens – have figured out that apparently

has eluded our leaders.

I didn’t have nearly as much debt as many do when completing a degree. And a master’s degree isn’t necessary for a career as a journalist. I saw the degree as an investment in myself, and the return has been well worth the money spent.

But I’m also nowhere near where I thought I would – or should – be once I hit my mid-30s. I’ve never considered buying a home, even though I know renting is more expensive in the long run. Having money for a down payment was never possible – and I don’t think I’ve lived a life of luxury for the past 12 years.

I spent many of the early years of my career eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for dinner every day and struggling to pay bills. I charged car repairs and didn’t take vacations often. Most of my furniture was hand-me-downs or from garage sales.

Paying for a higher education shouldn’t make achieving the American Dream as difficult as it has become.

Fundraising campaign starts to prevent cuts to Will County Senior Services Center

vshanker@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Will County Senior Services Center has launched a GoFundMe fundraising page and may cut services as soon as March 13 if it doesn’t pay down its line of credit, Executive Director Patricia Hensley said.

The GoFundMe page at http://www.gofundme.com/ me27s4 is public and seeks to

raise $400,000 to pay off the center’s line of credit.

As of Saturday afternoon, the page had received $800 in donations.

“As of yesterday, it went public on GoFundMe,” Hensley said Friday, adding that the crowd-funding idea was one of many to help keep services afloat. “We have been trying everything we can think of to raise money, but so far we have only raised in total

about $7,000.”

Hensley said the center has paid off $50,000 off its $400,000 line of credit. But the center could lose services when the agency that provides it with federal grant money meets March 13.

The Northeastern Illinois Area Agency on Aging is meeting to discuss the center’s funding woes.

PARCC, or Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers, is replacing the Illinois Standards Achievement Test as the primary assessment of how students are learning compared to their peers in Illinois.

Students have prepared for the exam the entire semester, but educators have prepared for the new test since Common Core was launched by state leaders in 2009.

Local districts have hired instructional coaches for students, gotten them ready with typing classes and held Common Core sessions for parents.

Schools have worked on the new test with students since the Illinois State Board of Education released details in December, Woodland Principal Carol Paul said.

“Before that, we were using materials from other states that were ahead of us,” she said.

Smarter than your average fifth-grader? Take the test and see For his story on the coming PARCC tests, my colleague Vikaas Shanker thought to ask his fellow reporters if they were smarter than a Common Core fifth-grader and to spend an hour proving it by taking an online unit of the test.

“Actual time is 75 minutes, but students are expected to finish in 50 minutes and I’ll give you 10 minutes because it’ll be new to you,” Vikaas wrote. I was already confused.

If students are expected to finish in 50 minutes, then isn’t that the actual time? Where does 75 come in?

I could see I was ready for a fifth-grade math exam.

I was going to start the test at 1:45 p.m., but just then my wife texted my iPhone with emoticons and a Vine link she wanted me to look at. Not a delay I would’ve experienced back when I was in fifth-grade, which I recently learned was before Vikaas was born.

Question one involved using cubes to figure out the volume of a rectangular prism. Again, back in my day, we called rectangular prisms “boxes,” but counting so

So far, so good.

But then I was asked whether 83.041 was 8 x 10 + 3 x 1 + 4 x 1/10 + 1 x 1/100 or 8 x 10 + 3 x 1 + 4 x 1/100 + 1 x 1/1,000.

It is, for the record, the second one, which I got correct using a technique all students

should learn by the time they reach fifth grade – guessing.

Practice now, kids. It comes up a lot in life.

I did, however, erroneously believe the number to be eighty-three and forty-one hundredths when it is, in fact, eighty-three and forty-one thousandths.

It was difficult to see numbers written out that way.

I tried reading it to myself, although as a Will County native it would’ve been easier to “hear” the problem as people actually talk with “hunnerds and tao-sands.”

In the next question, Diana sold one-fifth of the store’s green shirts on Saturday and three-twelfths on Sunday and I wondered why it didn’t say she sold one-quarter of the Sunday shirts. Since threetwelfths is one-fourth in lowest terms, that made more sense.

Don’t we want the kids to answer the questions just like they’ll be expected to as adults? I think nine-twelfths of the people reading this will agree with me.

O’Dekirk goes after mayor at Joliet debate Candidates spar concerning firefighters exam

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Councilman Bob O’Dekirk went on the offensive against Mayor Tom Giarrante in their first public debate on Saturday, which included a revelation of possible cheating on a city firefighters exam.

Andy Mihelich, the Joliet Junior College board chairman who also is running for mayor, stood apart from most of the sparring, although he did say at one point that both opponents were exaggerating their roles in putting more police officers in the 2015 budget.

The mayoral contenders appeared with Joliet City Council candidates at a forum hosted by the Unity Community Development Corp.

O’Dekirk took jabs at Giarrante frequently when fielding questions.

tion about minority hiring, O’Dekirk said “there are more members of Mayor Giarrante’s family on the fire department than there are African-American firefighters.”

Giarrante, a former Joliet firefighter himself, responded that he has encouraged family members to take the firefighter tests. He said he does have a grandson and two nephews on the fire department, but added that it is common for firefighters and police to encourage relatives to take the exams.

“For you to insinuate there was wrongdoing, you are out of line,” Giarrante said to O’Dekirk.

Giarrante said the best way to bring more minorities into the police and fire department is to encourage them to take the tests used for hiring.

O’Dekirk, however, suggested firefighter exams were not necessarily fair tests. He said there were reports of answers being leaked for an exam taken last year by prospective firefighters.

“Don’t let anyone tell you later that it’s a fair test when the guy next to you has the answers,” he said.

Asked later if it was ever determined that the answers were leaked, O’Dekirk said he did not know. But he did say the city is considering a change in testing companies because of the report.

But for defending himself against comments made by O’Dekirk, Giarrante did not mention his opponents.

Mihelich, too, largely stuck with his own agenda. But he did question separate claims Tom

by Giarrante Giarrante and O’Dekirk, a former Joliet police officer, that they were responsible for adding more police in the budget for the Andy Neighborhood Mihelich Oriented Policing Team.

Noting he was at the City Council meeting where the officers were added to the Bob budget, MiO’Dekirk helich said it appeared that the city manager had recommended more police because of concerns expressed by the community.

“Neither one of my opponents addressed that vocally

until the city manager addressed the issue,” Mihelich said.

Minimum wage at warehouses

Mihelich mainly emphasized his own ideas, including a local minimum wage for warehouse workers in Joliet and especially for those who work at companies that receive tax incentives to move into the city.

“No company that moves into the area should be given any money unless they meet that minimum wage,” he said.

O’Dekirk, pointing to Giarrante’s insistence that contractors use union labor when building in Joliet, said the city should also try to compel businesses once they open “to hire union labor from Joliet.”

Giarrante defended his record on economic development, pointing to new businesses like APL Logistics and the Home Depot distribution center, which, he said, pay good wages and benefits.

“I think Joliet has made great strides,” he said.

Evergreen Terrace trial could start Tuesday

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The trial over the price of Evergreen Terrace is scheduled to start Tuesday.

In the days leading to the trial, the city of Joliet and Evergreen Terrace owners discussed a possible settlement price for the 356-unit apartment complex.

Failing an agreement, the case goes to a federal jury.

The city in September won its case condemning the federally subsidized, low-income housing complex on Broadway Street.

This trial would determine what the city has to pay to take ownership. The price could be anywhere from $13.7 million to $23.5 million, based on apprais-

als the two sides have filed in federal court.

After that, the case may not be over.

A spokeswoman for Evergreen Terrace said owners have expressed their intention to appeal the September ruling that allowed Joliet to take over the property.

And, whatever price is set for Evergreen Terrace, it’s not clear the City Council would agree to pay it.

The City Council was unanimous in 2005 in launching the condemnation lawsuit that contended mismanagement of Evergreen Terrace led to unsuitable living conditions and high crime rates at the complex.

But the council now is divided over how bad conditions

are at the complex and whether city ownership is a good idea.

Councilman Bob O’Dekirk, the most vocal skeptic of the city takeover, said a closed session meeting last week to discuss a possible settlement price was “very contentious.”

“Even if we agree on a price, where is the money going to come from?” O’Dekirk said.

The city has planned to issue bonds to finance the acquisition. The bonds would be

repaid through subsidized rent the city would collect from the apartments.

But it’s not clear how many apartments would stay and how many would be eliminated. Part of the city’s case for condemning Evergreen Terrace is that there are too many apartments on too little land at the site.

“Before we see an agreement, we’ve got to see where the money is going to come from and what we’re going to do with the property,” O’Dekirk said.

The city has hired Holsten Development to work on a redevelopment plan for Evergreen Terrace. Peter Holsten, the head of the company, said at a community meeting in February that the city was just

beginning to collect ideas from residents before developing a plan for Evergreen Terrace.

Mayor Tom Giarrante said the city will turn to Holsten to develop a plan if it agrees to buy the property.

Giarrante was a council member in 2005 when the city voted to pursue condemnation.

He has continued to advocate for city ownership of Evergreen Terrace, saying different management would be better for the residents living there.

But his comments suggest paying the price for Evergreen Terrace is no sure thing.

“Why pay to develop a plan before you decide to buy it?” Giarrante said. “Once we decide to buy it, we’ll sit down with Holsten and meet with the residents and develop a plan.”

Slammers say they generate revenue for Joliet 2014 Slammers Revenue for Joliet

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Slammers are making a profit at Silver Cross Field and so is the city of Joliet, the baseball team’s chief executive said last week.

The Joliet Slammers delivered a Community Impact Report at the same time it was asking the city to spend $361,000 for a new scoreboard at Silver Cross Field.

Slammers CEO Josh Schaub made a point of emphasizing revenues created for the city at the ballpark while making presentations to the Joliet City Council. The city owns the ballpark.

“We have done a very poor job, I believe, in communicating the value of the Slammers to the city,” Schaub told the Joliet City Council Baseball Committee on Monday. “The stadium has been profitable to the city of Joliet under our ownership the last two years, according to our records.”

The Slammers reported more than $137,000 in direct revenue to the city from rent, naming rights income, food and beverage taxes and other items.

The city, which owns Silver Cross Field, did not have an outline of what expenses it incurred at the stadium. Schaub said he was confident the city made more money than it spent there.

That might be the case, but one reason could be that the city delayed a major project

City Manager Jim Hock said $180,000 is budgeted for the project, which is expected to be done at the end of this year.

That project, on top of the purchase of the new scoreboard and video screen, approved by the council Tuesday, will cost the city $541,000.

That’s almost four times the revenue Silver Cross Field delivered to the city in 2014.

Fortunately for the city,

neither one of the big-ticket items coming due this year should be ongoing costs. The existing scoreboard has been there since the stadium opened in 2002, and the new one is expected to last longer.

Hock said last week there are no other major expenses pending at Silver Cross Field.

City revenues from Silver Cross Field will improve in one aspect: The rent paid by the Slammers goes up to $75,000. The current ownership has paid $50,000 a year in its first two years.

Schaub said the team is making money, and one reason is the organization does more than play baseball.

Silver Cross Field in 2014 hosted Hopstring Fest, a craft beer and rock music festival, three other concerts and a mixed martial arts event. In all, Schaub said, the field was used for 219 events on 177 dates.

Other events include movie nights on Fridays, which Schaub noted will be enhanced by the video screen on the new scoreboard.

Of the 219 events in 2014,

Slammer games accounted for 59 of them.

But 58 other events counted by the Slammers were dates when the field was used for practice by the University of St. Francis, which also played 20 home games at Silver Cross Field.

Another 18 dates were taken by high school baseball games at Silver Cross Field.

In addition, the IHSA baseball state championships are played at Silver Cross Field.

The event takes one weekend.

But the Slammers counted 8,000 people coming to the stadium on those two days.

When Schaub arrived in 2012, he said the plan was to bring events beyond baseball into the stadium.

“We feel we have lived up to that,” he told city officials last week. “We have brought in a significant number of events in addition to Slammers game.”

8 One person injured in Friday’s crash

One person was injured Friday in a multivehicle collision on Interstate 55 on the Des Plaines River Bridge.

Seven vehicles were involved in a crash about 3:29 p.m. Friday on the bridge near Channahon. Illinois State Police reported one person suffered minor injuries. The crash blocked northbound traffic for more than an hour.

“They could decide to take any one of the services down,” Hensley said. The center can appeal that decision if it wants.

To lower expenses, the center has cut down service on its Meals on Wheels program, which serves lunch to senior citizens, from five days to four days each week.

It has also asked staff to take furlough days.

But that hasn’t been enough. Hensley said there is a possibility the agency could cut the center’s nutritional program.

If it does, the senior lunch program will transfer over to the Northeastern Illinois Area Agency on Aging. But almost 20 of the 71 people on staff may need to be let go.

“At this point in time, we don’t know what program will be cut,” Hensley said.

“We’re still trying to follow up with everyone.

To avoid any cuts, Hensley said she has reached out all the municipalities in Will County for assistance. She also is set to talk about the center’s situation March 12 to the Will County Board’s Executive Committee.

LOCAL BRIEFS BOLINGBROOK – A man died when he was struck by two vehicles after he left his car and was in the lanes on Interstate 55 at about 1 a.m. Saturday.

Salvador J. Pena Jr., 22, of Burbank, got out of his vehicle after “some sort of domestic altercation,” state police said.

Pena left his vehicle on I-55 near the Illinois 53 interchange, police said. He was in the northbound lanes and began walking.

He was struck by a vehicle while in between the right and center lanes. Then he was hit by

another vehicle.

Pena was declared dead on the scene, police said.

JOLIET – Phillip Petrakos, candidate for Joliet City Council District 4, has issued a press release saying he has been endorsed by Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White. Petrakos has worked for the Secretary of State’s office as a revenue agent since 2000, according to the news release.

10 Man pleads guilty Friday to murdering his grandmother

So he won’t spend half his life in prison for killing his 90-year-old grandmother two years ago.

Agerton will receive a 40-year sentence after Darel C. pleading guilty Agerton Friday morning to first-degree murder as part of a plea agreement.

Agerton, who was scheduled to face trial Monday, shifted his weight back and forth while standing before the bench with defense attorneys Alexander Beck and Greg DeBord.

Agerton said only “Yes, sir” and “No, sir” as Judge Daniel Rozak asked if he understood what rights he was giving up by pleading guilty.

On Nov. 29, 2012, Agerton was paroled from the Jacksonville Correctional Center after serving half of a three-year sentence for aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol and driving on a suspended license in 2010 and 2011.

ville and spent the night in his old bedroom at his grandmother’s house, according to investigators. Veronica Schick was a mechanic in World War II with the Women’s Army Corps, serving with a motor pool in the Pacific Theater.

Later, she worked at Argonne National Laboratory from 1978 to 1986.

Schick allowed Agerton to live with her while he was out on parole at her house in the 100 block of Jessie Street in Joliet Township. But she argued with Agerton after he invited friends over to drink and party without her permission the night after his release, Assistant Will County State’s Attorney Adam Capelli told Rozak.

Agerton claimed he found Schick at the foot of the basement stairs and believed she’d fallen, but later told Will County sheriff’s police she’d accidentally slipped while they argued.

An autopsy showed Schick died from blunt force injuries “that could not have come from a fall,” Capelli said, noting she also had been strangled.

Agerton was initially charged with six counts of murder, with each count carrying between 20 and 60 years in prison.

12 Harvey Brooks Foundation launches

fundraising effort to replace its boiler

clafortune@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The last two winters have not been particularly kind to the aging boiler at the Harvey Brooks Foundation, 100 McDonough St. in Joliet.

“We really, really had to make major, major repairs,” Harvey Brooks Executive Director Tempie Bates said. “We need a new one, but in order for us to continue to operate in this building, of course, we had to take care of it.”

The foundation has spent between $12,000 and $15,000 already on the boiler to keep it functional, but needs a new one, Bates said. It’s aiming to raise up to $20,000 to replace it.

To assist in the fundraising, the foundation has arranged a Go Fund Me site, and hopes the community will assist.

Residents of the nearby Des Plaines Gardens Homes are served by the foundation, said R. Dale Evans, Family Self-Sufficiency Program coordinator for the Housing Authority of Joliet.

“Some years ago, we lost

funding for our after-school program, Teen REACH,” Evans said. “So now, really the only program in that area for kids that are grade school or junior high age is the program that’s offered at the Harvey Brooks Foundation.”

Evans has given to the foundation’s boiler efforts, and he’s helping spread the word to gather more help.

“If we get a couple hundred people to give the same amount I have, the problem would be gone,” Evans said.

The three-story limestone building the Harvey Brooks Foundation operates out of was built in 1919, Bates said, and it’s locally designated as a historic building. The foundation is working to get state designation, to pursue financial support for renovations.

“We have someone working on that as we speak, so that we can really look to restoring this building,” Bates said. “It’s important to have it here in this community.”

MINOOKA – Rather than remodeling only the floors of Minooka Community High School’s stadium grandstand bleachers, as approved at the February school board meeting, the board has added three more projects.

Beginning the day after graduation, the aluminum seats also will be replaced, as will the guardrail and surrounding chain-link fence.

The base bid for the new floor, plus bringing the bleachers into ADA compliance, was $469,300.

The new work, approved at Thursday’s board meeting, adds another $71,880, bringing the total project cost to $541,180.

The project’s approval follows an insurance inspection that found safety deficiencies,

mostly with the walking surface, which has gaps between the boards, causing a tripping hazard and also allowing spectators’ personal items to fall through.

The project will include installing a ramp and adding 60 ADA-compliant seats in front.

The foundation remains in good condition and is not in need of repairs. Finance Director John Bryk said the finished project will likely last the next 50 years. It will be done by lowest bidder RK Sports Seating, Inc. of Indiana.

Contro and some committee members pointed out that hearings must be held to show probable cause.

“We have to have a reason to tow a car. We just don’t do vendettas and go out and tow people’s cars,” Contro said. “If that was the case, we’d have civil lawsuits coming every day. … If you find that going on, I want to know about that. But to put that out in the public forum that we have people who do vendettas, it disturbs me.”

Contro said Friday changes are in the works that would allow a judge discretion over whether a person, if found not guilty, should be reimbursed the fee.

THE HERALD-NEWS JOLIET – A Joliet man has been charged with two counts of child pornography.

Kiyoshi Murakami, 41, of 5416 Salma St., Joliet, was arrested at his home Thursday by investigators with the High Technology Crimes Kiyoshi Unit and Joliet Murakami police officers, according to a news release from Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow.

Murakami was charged with two counts of child pornography, class 2 felonies that carry potential sentences of three to seven years in prison, the state’s attorney

said. Bond was set Friday at $250,000. Murakami must post 10 percent, or $25,000, to be released.

The charges stem from an investigation launched by the High Technology Crimes Unit. Investigators identified a computer used to download child pornography with an Internet address that led them to Murakami’s Joliet home.

Investigators executed a search warrant Thursday and seized two laptops and two cellphones, the state’s attorney said.

Investigators with the Illinois Attorney General’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force also were involved in the investigation.

Murakami is next due in court at 9 a.m. March 27.

JOLIET – The Will County Sheriff’s Office wants County Board approval to charge a $300 administrative towing fee to help offset costs.

The sheriff’s office tows on average about 1,000 cars annually, Undersheriff Robert Contro told the Will County Board’s Judicial Committee last week.

The proposed ordinance would allow the county to assess a fine for the impoundment of a vehicle before that vehicle is released back to the owner. Most other municipalities in the region charge about $500, so Will County would start at a lower figure, he said.

As it stands, there is no administrative fee for cars towed in unincorporated Will County, but vehicle owners must pay a towing and storage fee to the towing company.

The $300 fee would help off-

set processing costs associated with the arrest and detention of offenders and follow-up investigations, Contro said. Handling a tow also takes officers away from other matters, he said.

If approved by the full County Board, Will County would join the growing number of communities statewide that have enacted towing fees. Under state law, the county sheriff’s office only tows when a driver is arrested in connection with driving with a suspended or revoked license, driving under the influence, an outstanding warrant or other charges where the car is impounded. The Judicial Committee voted Tuesday to send the issue to the County Board’s Executive Committee, which meets this Thursday. Steve Balich, R-Homer Glen, and Darren Bennefield, R-Aurora, voted against the motion.

USA Skate Center closing in Romeoville

vshanker@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – A popular and traditional rollerskating rink in Romeoville is closing after 42 years.

The USA Skate Center, 1303 Naperville Drive in Romeoville, will hold its last skate session Sunday night from 6 to 9 p.m. before it closes for good, co-owner Donna Turner said.

Turner and her husband bought the skating rink in 2003 because she loved to skate and she always wanted to own a rink.

“We’ve sold it,” Turner said.

“It was one of those things where we weren’t looking to sell it. But a good opportunity came. It was a personal decision.”

The new owners plan to renovate the rink into an auto body shop, Turner said.

Wilmington resident Dave Morgan said he lived in Romeoville when the rink opened in 1973.

“It’s tearing me apart,” Morgan said. “We’re losing a piece of Romeoville’s history.”

Morgan, who skated every day after school in the 1970s when he was a teenager, and has skated three to four days every week for the past eight years, said the skating rink provided a safe place for kids.

“Kids in town would go there,” he said. “There were no recreational centers back then.”

Morgan said there was talk among frequent skaters to set up a fund or petition to persuade the owners to not sell the rink. But the deal already was completed.

Turner said the couple got a deal that was “too good to pass up.”

Morgan said he understood why the owners might want to secure their future with the sale.

Turner didn’t comment on the deal, but said it was a hard decision and the owners originally didn’t intend to sell.

The owners allowed Morgan to take a booth he sits at every time he comes in as a souvenir after the rink closes.

Morgan has encouraged skaters to sign the booth as they come in. He plans to donate it to the Romeoville Historical Society.

A reunion skate night was held Friday night for people who skated at the rink back in the 1970s and 1980s with the same disc jockey who ran the music back then, Morgan said.

The Illinois Tollway is advising I-PASS customers to disregard erroneous emails being sent from “E-ZPass Support.”

I-PASS customers should delete any email titled “Indebted for driving on toll road” or “Payment for driving on toll road” that arrives on an E-ZPass letterhead, according to a news release from the Tollway.

The Tollway has been informed by the E-ZPass Group, an association of 25 toll agencies in 15 states that operate electronic toll collection programs, that this is a phishing scam using the E-ZPass logo and claiming that recipients owe money for missed tolls.

No I-PASS accounts have been compromised as a result of this scam, according to the news release. Customers with further questions can call 1-800-8247277.

Giarrante backs out of upcoming debate, says event is ‘clearly biased’

JOLIET – Mayor Tom Giarrante said he won’t take part in a March 12 mayoral candidate debate hosted by neighborhood associations and local organizations, calling the event “clearly biased” and “manipulated” by his opponent’s campaign to “be anything but fair.”

The debate is scheduled ahead of the April 7 election, where Giarrante will face Councilman Bob O’Dekirk and Andy Mihelich, chairman of the Joliet Junior College board.

Erik Smith, a spokesman for Giarrante’s campaign, said Friday the debate’s moderator, John Sheridan, with the Cunningham Neighborhood Association, is a well-known O’Dekirk supporter. And Councilman Jim McFarland, another O’Dekirk supporter, is holding a fundraiser at the same location just prior to the debate, Smith said.

“It’s a clear coordination to try to trick voters, and our campaign, with an over-the-top

biased debate,” he said. “With McFarland’s campaign fundraiser, and an O’Dekirk supporter as the moderator, the crowd is clearly being built.”

O’Dekirk challenged the mayor’s assertion that he had something to do with setting up the debate.

“He’s just now making this an issue because he’s afraid to get on the stage and have taxpayers asking questions,” O’Dekirk said. “I had nothing to do with it. [The neighborhood associations] called me with the idea, asking if I would appear.”

O’Dekirk said he issued a news release earlier in the week with an “open-ended offer” to Giarrante: Choose his own moderator and pick a new venue.

“It’s just a cop-out. It’s just an excuse,” O’Dekirk said Smith said the mayor is open to conversations about having a new debate at a later date with a new venue and

agreed upon moderator.

Sheridan said while he may be opinionated during Joliet City Council meetings against some of the mayor’s proposals and policies, a debate is a different venue.

“I’m only a moderator in a sense that I’m reading the questions. These questions are being submitted by the public,” Sheridan said. “It’s going to be done fairly. It’s no secret the mayor isn’t fast on his feet. … Again, I’m not going to embarrass myself by picking on someone. I will be respectful of all the candidates.”

McFarland issued a statement Saturday saying his event that night is “my fourth annual St. Patrick’s Day fundraiser” and “has been planned for months.” McFarland called the mayor’s withdrawal from the debate “another one of his anti-transparency tactics.”

Smith said Giarrante is attending other mayoral debates scheduled for March.

OBITUARIES MAMDOUH H. ABOU-YOUSSEF Born: Dec. 4, 1939 Died: Feb. 27, 2015

Dr. Mamdouh H. Abou-Youssef, DVM, PhD, age 75, passed away on Friday, February 27, 2015, at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet with his loving family by his side. His death was due to multiple myeloma and its complications (diagnosed Aug. 2011).

Born December 4, 1939, in El-Minya, Egypt, Mamdouh (known to many of his clients as Doctor Youssef or simply Doc) received his veterinary medicine degree from the University of Cairo in 1963 and afterwards worked at the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization in Egypt. In 1967 Mamdouh came to the USA to begin a sabbatical and earned a Master’s Degree and PhD in veterinary medical science at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, where he met his wife, Karen DeNardo, of Joliet (married 1977).

After working in Ohio for a veterinary research company, he began clinical work in the Joliet area including employment at Animal Medical Clinic with Dr. Terry Messamore, DVM, from 1983 to 1987. Mamdouh opened Essington Road Animal Hospital in 1987 and received much satisfaction from caring medically for dogs and cats and emotionally for their owners.

While Mamdouh enjoyed his work at this clinic, his first love was always his family. He cared for his family with the utmost devotion. He also enjoyed fixing broken things in his own way and surprising people with his special sense of humor.

Words cannot express how much he appreciated all the kindness and comfort he received from his extended family and friends through the years.

Mamdouh was preceded in death

by his father, Hussein Abou-Youssef; his mother, Fardous El-Nashar; brothers, Mohamed and Mustafa; sister, Wedad; and wife’s father and mother, Phil DeNardo and Abby Wielgosz Foreman DeNardo.

He is survived in USA by his wife, Karen DeNardo; son, Dr. Adam Abou-Youssef; daughter, Amirrah Abou-Youssef (fiance, Dan Foreman); and sister-in-law, Judy DeNardo. Surviving in Egypt are brothers, Mourad and Magdy; sisters, Soriya, Safaa, Hoda, and Ilham; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A service for Mamdouh will be held Saturday, March 14, 2015, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black at Essington Rds., Joliet. Everyone is welcome, and a celebration of his life will begin at 3:30 p.m. Private

burial and Islamic funeral rites were held at Woodlawn Memorial Park on March 2, 2015.

GLADYS B. ARNOLD Gladys B. Arnold, nee Perina, age 91 passed away Wednesday, March 4, 2015, at her residence, Senior Star at Weber Place in Romeoville, formerly of Berwyn.

She is survived by her loving son, Fred (Cheryl) Arnold; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Fred R. Arnold; also her parents, George and Theresa Perina.

JACK COBB

Born: Aug. 15, 1931; in Glen Allen, MO Died: March 5, 2015; in Morris, IL Jack Cobb, age 83, of Morris, passed away Thursday morning March 5, 2015, at Regency Health Care in Morris.

Born August 15, 1931, in Glen Allen, Missouri, Jackie Lynn was a son of the late Everett Myron and Luella (Long) Cobb. He was a graduate of Woodland High School in Lutesville, Missouri and went on to attend college in Cape Girardeau.

Jack honorably served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict, and on January 1, 1954, he married Eugenia Isabelle Sharpin Mississippi.

Jack gained employment at Amoco Chemical Company, from where he retired in 1994 after more than 30 years of service. Jack was a former member of the First Baptist Church in Morris and most recently attended the Minooka United Methodist Church. He was a former member of the Morris Moose Lodge, bowled on leagues in both Joliet and Morris, and participated in the Amoco Retiree’s Club. Jack took pleasure in metal detecting and working both crossword and jigsaw puzzles. He will most be remembered for his love of time spent with his grandkids.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Jean; three children, Charles Cobb of Mazon, Brent Cobb of New Lenox and Kristal Spencer of Minooka; five grandchildren, Meigan (Phil) Hansett, Kaitlyn Cobb, Trevor Spencer, Connor Spencer and Cole Spencer; one great grandson, John; one sister-in-law, Louise Johnston of Morris; and several nieces and nephews, as well as two cousins, Linda (Oscar) Govreau of Missouri and Norma Crews of Georgia.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Janice and Betty.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 8, 2015, between the hours of 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. at Reeves Funeral Home, 408 East Washington Street (one block east of Illinois Route 47) in Morris. Funeral services will follow Monday morning, March 9th at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral home with Pastor Richard Darr officiating.

Burial will be in Sample Cemetery.

JACK S. COX

Born: August 22, 1919; in Coal City, IL Died: March 2, 2015; in Joliet, IL Jack S. Cox, age 95, passed away Monday, March 2, 2015, at Presence Villa Franciscan in Joliet. He was born August 22, 1919 to the late Adeline (nee Price) and Edward Cox in Coal City.

A lifelong resident of Joliet, and graduate of Joliet Central High School, Class of 1938.

Jack worked for a Chicago newspaper before taking a job at the E. J. & E. Railroad in the accounting department in 1940. He retired in 1984 after 44 years.

Jack enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served on the South Pacific Islands of New Caledonia, Guadaconel and Ulithi as a radar operator with Argus Unit 14.

He was a life member of Cantigny Post #367. He was an active member of the “J” Golf Team and bowling league for many years. He traveled the states, Mexico and Canada along with several trips to Europe where he enjoyed playing golf in Ireland and Scotland (St. Andrews). Jack was a die hard Cubs fan, who was always

MELTON J. DUPIRE

Born: Nov. 25, 1941; in Joliet, IL Died: March 5, 2015; in Fort Smith, AR Melton J. Dupire “Pa”, passed away at home, in Fort Smith, Arkansas, on March 5, 2015.

He was born on November 25, 1941, to Felix and Inez, in Joliet, Illinois. He was retired from D&D Floor Covering.

He graduated from Joliet Township High School in 1960. He joined the United States Army in 1962, and was stationed at Fort Chaffee where he played on the football and basketball teams. He was honorably discharged from the Army in 1965. In April 1965, he met his future wife, Nancy Kleck, at Beverly’s Drive-in, and 7 months later they were married. They had two children, Richard and Nancy Leigh.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Nancy Kleck Dupire. His children, Richard Dupire and wife, Melissa; and his daughter, Nancy Leigh Dupire, all of Fort Smith, AR. His sister, Carol Petersen and husband,

Jim Petersen, of Shorewood, Illinois.

His 4 grandchildren, Caylee and Christopher Cross, and Dax and Jared Dupire, all of Fort Smith, AR. He is preceded in death by his parents, Felix and Inez Dupire.

Born: Aug. 27, 1920; in Gary, WV Died: March 3, 2015; in Joliet, IL Rachel Louisa Fahrner (nee Van Dyke), left our lives March 3, 2015, with her family by her side.

Born August 27, 1920, in Gary, West Virginia, to William Luther and Rachel Tamsy Van Dyke, Sr. Rachel graduated from Medical College in Virginia and gained employment as the “Head Nurse of OB/GYN Unit” at that hospital.

Married Dr. George Vincent Fahrner, and worked alongside her husband to open his private medical practice here in Joliet.

Rachel and George had three daughters, Faith (Raymond) Turvey, Phyllis (Rick) Raasch and Louisa L. Jurcin.

Rachel leaves numerous survivors to cherish her memory. Grandchildren include Raymond (Cheryl), Scot (Michelle), Christian, Amy (Jon) Walter, and Adam Turvey, Ladine (Bob) Brick, Heidi (Jason) Moore, Nicole (Douglas) Dunbar-Anderson, Noah (Valery) Jurcin; nephew, William Van Dyke III and family friend, Richard Zenke.

There are also 22 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren.

DR. JACK D. JAMERSON Dr. Jackie Dean (Jack D.) Jamerson, age 67, of Nelson, Virginia, died at his residence on Monday, January 19, 2015.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce Ann (Dark); three sons, Dr. Scott (Brandi) of Charleston, WV, Brian (Anita) of Washington DC, Christopher (Rachael) of Tulsa, OK; his mother, Margie Jamerson of Joliet, IL; two brothers, Joseph (Mary) of Jacksonville, FL, and John (Yvonne) of Joliet, IL; 9 grandchildren, and 1 great granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jack K. Jamerson in 2002.

He received his PhD. in Inorganic Chemistry at University of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada after studying at University of Northern Illinois and University of Minnesota. He worked for Union Carbide/ Dow Chemical for a total of 37 years. He then taught chemistry at Vance-Granville Community College in Roxboro, North Carolina.

He also mentored many chemistry students.

Services were held January 21, 2015, at House of Prayer near Buffalo Junction, Virginia.

CYNTHIA A. JOHNSON Cynthia A. Johnson (nee Grant), age 52, passed away peacefully with her loving family by her side, Tuesday, March 3, 2015.

Survived by her loving husband, John Johnson; one son, Andrew (Amanda) Stroud; step-son, Eric Johnson; one grandson, Jordan Stroud; her mom, Lucille Seehafer. A brother, Michael Bishop; and sister, Vicki Lynn. A special friend, Adam Stroud. Her loyal companion and best friend Bogie. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

He was born in Waterloo, Iowa, on February 26, 1950, son of William J. and May (Lord) Rickert. He married Regina Carranza on May 8, 1993, in Des Moines, Iowa.

A retired senior engineer, David graduated from Waterloo West High School and received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa in mechanical engineering.

He worked for Delavan Inc. in Des Moines, Case IH in Hinsdale, Illinois, and Pall Corp. in New Port Richey, Florida, among other companies.

He was an Eagle Scout, a Cub Scout leader and a director of Rickert Development, Inc. While residing in Lockport, he was a member of St. Dennis Church.

David was honest and selfless, devoted to his family and a strong believer in the Christian faith. He was an avid bridge player, enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, playing golf, fishing and sailing.

“Our films aren’t the conventional kind, locked down and scripted before shooting begins,” David Maysles once said of their films. “We shoot life as it’s lived.”

A technical revolution had made such films possible – the arrival of lightweight, portable sound and film equipment – and gave them the opportunity to observe their subjects with as little effect on events as possible. “The natural disposition

of the camera,” Maysles said, “is to seek out reality.”

In “Grey Gardens,” released in 1975 and later adapted into a Broadway musical, the Maysles Brothers captured on film the lives of a mother and her daughter, relatives of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, living in a falling-apart East Hampton mansion.

Some critics attacked the cinema verite techniques as falsely objective, given that the film ultimately viewed by audiences was usually a result of what the filmmakers chose to focus on and the cutting and selecting of the editing process.

“Any work of art is a combination of objective and subjective,” Maysles once told The New York Times in response to those criticisms. “But I try to minimize my effect. I don’t interview people, for instance.

If you ask a question, that determines the answer. Making a film isn’t finding the answer to a question; it’s trying to capture life as it is.”

She was previously employed as a secretary for Caterpillar, Inc. for thirteen years and later became the bookkeeper for Minuteman Gas in Wilmington.

Member of the United Methodist Church in Wilmington. Mary Ann had a passion for wintering in Florida and she loved to travel, not to mention traveling to twenty-two foreign countries. She was an avid reader, enjoyed flowers, and was an Elvis fan in the 1950’s. Mary Ann was a natural at interior decorating.

NEW YORK – Albert Maysles, the revolutionary documentary filmmaker who helped pioneer nonfiction movies by turning a keenly observant eye on both the famous and the ordinary in films like “Gimme Shelter” and “Grey Gardens,” has died. He was 88.

In a statement, Maysles’ family said the director passed away after a brief battle with cancer at his New York home Thursday night.

Maysles was best known for a handful of documentary classics he made with his brother, David, in the 1960s and 1970s.

The Maysles Brothers – as many referred to them – chose subjects as ordinary as the struggles of Bible salesmen and as glamorous as Marlon Brando, Orson Welles and the Beatles, whom the pair followed in 1964 during their first trip to the United States.

Maysles was active right up to his death. His documentary of the fashion icon Iris Apfel, “Iris,” is to be released in April.

Earlier this week, the Tribeca Film Festival announced that “In Transit,” a documentary he co-directed about the longest train route in the U.S., will premiere at this year’s festival.

Born in Boston to Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe, Maysles served in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946, studied at Syracuse and Boston University and taught psychology for three years before turning to film. His first foray into motion pictures was a 16-mm documentary he made in 1955 while visiting mental hospitals in the Soviet Union.

Maysles started out as an assistant to Robert Drew, a pioneer of cinema verite, and his peers included such acclaimed documentary makers as D.A Pennebaker and Frederick Wiseman.

Distracted drivers could get prison time for fatal crashes

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS – Fatal crashes caused by illegal cellphone use should carry penalties similar to those imposed on drunk drivers who kill, a suburban lawmaker says.

The Arlington Heights Daily Herald reported that Rep. Robert Marwick wants aggravated use of an electronic communication device to put an offender in prison for about 20 months as opposed to a minimal amount of jail time.

The Norridge Democrat says such distracted driving would then be a Class 2 felony rather than a Class 4. He predicts a drop in incidents like the one that accompanied stiffer penalties for aggravated driving under the influence.

“We made a huge dent in DUI prosecution when we raised the penalties to send a message to people: ‘Don’t do this – you’ll be sorry if you do,’” said Martwick, a former Cook County assistant state’s attorney.

He said when people decide “to respond to a text message while going 75 mph on our roads and do so without impairment, they’re making a conscious decision that places the life of others at great peril.”

Last fall, the Daily Herald reported that more than 1,000 people were found breaking the state’s requirement that cellphone usage be hands-free while observing 10 major suburban intersections from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. on a weekday.

EAST ST. LOUIS – U.S. Senator Dick Durbin is wading into the mayoral race in his hometown of East St. Louis. Durbin is endorsing a challenger for her support for limiting operating hours at the city’s late-night bars and clubs.

The Belleville News-Democrat reported Durbin held a local news conference Friday in support of mayoral candidate Emeka Jackson-Hicks. She faces incumbent Mayor Alvin Parks Jr. and challenger Courtney Hoffman in the April 7 election.

Additionally, lenders are generally unavailable on the seventh day to OK financing. Loans are required to buy four of five cars, Colin Wickstrom of Wickstrom Auto Group in Barrington said.

2 oil cars still burning at Illinois derailment site

GALENA – Two rail cars remained on fire Saturday at the site where an oil train derailed this week in western Illinois. But authorities say they did not have to allow a leaking car to explode as was initially expected.

Authorities had warned of the likelihood of more explosions at the site of Thursday’s derailment south of Galena.

But in an update Saturday, the Federal Railroad Administration said the tank car’s pressure relief valve closed, stopping the

State Police: No more paper applications for FOID cards

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois State Police is phasing out paper applications for firearm owner identification cards.

The agency says Monday is the last day to submit paper applications. Only online applications will be accepted beginning March 16.

Officials say the change streamlines and modernizes the application process, bringing it in line with its concealed-carry permit process. People who don’t have computers still will be able to use the alternative call-center method.

The agency also is eliminating the requirement for FOID and concealed-carry applicants to get a digital identification. All new and returning concealed-carry applicants must register with the state police by providing information from their driver’s license or state ID card, creating a username and password and answering security questions.

Federally licensed firearms dealers can conduct background checks through the site.

MADISON, Wis. – A 19-year-old black man who died after being shot by a white police officer was unarmed, the Madison police chief said Saturday, assuring protesters who earlier in the day had chanted “Black Lives Matter” that his department would defend their rights to gather while imploring the community to express their anger with “responsibility and restraint.”

Tony Robinson was shot Friday night after assaulting Officer Matt Kenny, Madison Police Chief Mike Koval said. Kenny was injured, Koval said, but didn’t provide details. It wasn’t clear whether Robinson, who died at a hospital, was alone in the apartment.

“He was unarmed. That’s going to make this all the more complicated for the investigators, for the public to accept,” Koval said during a news conference. Police department spokesman Joel DeSpain said Kenny would not have been wearing a body camera.

IHS Global Insight, an economic analysis firm, estimates Massachusetts alone suffered

roughly $1 billion in lost wages and profits, as storm after storm pummeled the region, delivering more than 8 feet of snow in roughly a month.

A survey released this week by Massachusetts business groups representing those and other industries reported sales dropped an average of 24 percent and payroll dropped about 7 percent among their small businesses members.

“January and February are always tough months for us because people just don’t want to travel,” said Christopher Crean, a vice president at Peter Pan, a Springfield-based long-distance bus company. “But when you add in all the snow and cold and highway closures, that just compounds the injury. It’s hard to make a profit.”

2 Nemtsov suspects detained in Russia

MOSCOW – Russia’s security service head said Saturday that two suspects in the killing of leading opposition figure Boris Nemtsov have been detained.

Russian news reports later cited an official as saying one of them had served with police troops in Chechnya.

The short and vague announcement of the detentions by Federal Security Service director Alexander Bortnikov prompted only skepticism and weak satisfaction from his comrades.

SELMA, Ala. – America’s racial history “still casts its long shadow upon us,” President Barack Obama said Saturday as he stood in solidarity and remembrance with civil rights activists whose beatings by police a half-century ago galvanized much of the nation against racial oppression and hastened passage of historic voting rights for minorities. Tens of thousands of people joined to commemorate the “Bloody Sunday” march of 1965 and take stock of the struggle for equality.

Under a bright sun, the first black U.S. president praised the figures of a civil rights era that he was too young to know but that helped him break the ultimate racial barrier in political history with his ascension to the highest office.

He called them “warriors of justice” who pushed America closer to a more perfect union.

“So much of our turbulent history – the stain of slavery and anguish of civil war, the yoke of segregation and tyranny of Jim Crow, the death of four little girls in Birmingham, and the dream of a Baptist preacher – met on this bridge,” Obama told the crowd before taking a symbolic walk across part of the Edmund Pettus Bridge, where the 1965 march erupted into police violence.

“It was not a clash of armies, but a clash of wills, a contest to determine the meaning of America,” Obama said. He was 3 years old at the time of the march.

A veteran of that clash, Rep. John Lewis, who was brought down by police truncheons that day in 1965 and suffered a skull fracture, exhorted the crowd to press on with the work of racial justice.

“Get out there and push and pull until we redeem the soul of America,” Lewis said.

He was the youngest and is

the last survivor of the Big Six civil rights activists, a group led by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. that had the greatest impact on the movement.

In the crowd stood Madeline McCloud of Gainesville, Florida, who traveled overnight with a group of NAACP members from central Florida and marched in Georgia for civil rights back in the day.

“For me this could be the end of the journey since I’m 72,” she said. “I’m stepping back into the history we made.”

Also in attendance was Peggy Wallace Kennedy, a daughter of the late George Wallace, the Alabama governor who once vowed “segregation forever.”

Selma’s fire department estimated the crowd reached 40,000. Former President George W. Bush shared the platform. Republican congressional leaders were mostly absent but one, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, joined the walk.

Private email use a source of friction

SALEM, Ore. – The types of transparency questions surrounding Hillary Rodham Clinton’s use of personal email to conduct business while secretary of state have led in recent years to access fights in state capitals throughout the country.

Governors and other elected officials routinely use private emails, laptops and cellphones for government business, a popular strategy that sometimes helps them avoid public scrutiny of their actions.

Open-records fights over private emails have had varying results.

“It’s an issue that’s becoming increasingly prevalent as we all have more and more accounts on social media and email,” said Adam Marshall, a legal fellow on open government for the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press. “I think it’s a real and serious problem at all levels of government across the nation.”

Most state transparency laws were written before electronic communications were common, and they vary significantly in how they handle public business conducted through private accounts and devices.

Even in states requiring disclosure, it’s tough to know whether officials are disclosing all relevant records when they are the only ones to have access.

The most recent statehouse skirmish over private emails is unfolding in Oregon, where former Gov. John Kitzhaber and his fiancée, Cylvia Hayes, are fighting on multiple fronts to keep their emails out of the public eye and away from federal investigators.

Kitzhaber resigned last month amid suspicions that Hayes used the governor’s office to land contracts for her green-energy consulting business. She earned more than $200,000 from advocacy groups while serving as a volunteer adviser to the governor.

Emails from several personal accounts Kitzhaber used were archived on state servers, a move he says was inadvertent. Shortly before he resigned, a staffer tried to have them erased, but technicians refused and they were later leaked to Willamette Week, a Portland alternative newspaper.

Separately, Kitzhaber’s fiancée filed a lawsuit against The Oregonian newspaper in Portland in an attempt to protect her own emails from a public records request. The state’s attorney general has ordered that she give the newspaper emails from the multiple private accounts she used to interact with state officials.

Revelations this week that Clinton used her personal email account extensively to conduct official business have raised questions about whether she violated the language or spirit of transparency rules as she considers a 2016 presidential run. A State Department spokeswoman said no law prohibited Clinton from using her own email to conduct government business.

On Friday, the Obama administration said it would determine what parts of her official emails will be released publicly from her private account.

Government transparency advocates say the public has a right to know what their elected officials are doing with their tax dollars.

IS destroying another ancient archaeological site in Iraq

BAGHDAD – Islamic State militants continued their campaign targeting cultural heritage sites in territories they control in northern Iraq, looting and damaging the ancient city of Hatra just one day after bulldozing the historic city of Nimrud, according to Iraqi government officials and local residents. The destruction in Hatra comes as the militant Islamic group fended off an Iraqi army offensive in Saddam Hussein’s hometown and fought pitched battles in eastern Syria in an area populated by predominantly Christian villages.

Iraqi officials in the northern city of Mosul said Saturday that Islamic State militants have begun demolishing Hatra, a move UNESCO described as “cultural cleansing.”

An official with the ministry of tourism and antiquities’ archaeological division in Mosul told The Associated Press that multiple residents living near Hatra heard two large explosions Saturday morning, then reported seeing bulldozers begin demolishing the site.

He spoke anonymously for fear of reprisal.

Saeed Mamuzini, a Kurdish official from Mosul, told the AP that the militants had begun carrying away artifacts from Hatra as early as Thursday and on Saturday, began to destroy the 2,000-year-old city.

Hatra, located 68 miles southwest of the city of Mosul, was a large fortified city during the Parthian Empire and capital of the first Arab kingdom.

A UNESCO world heritage site, Hatra is said to have withstood invasions by the Romans in A.D. 116 and 198 thanks to its high, thick walls reinforced by towers. The ancient trading center spanned 4 miles in circumference and was supported by more than 160 towers. At its heart are a series of temples with a grand temple at the center – a structure supported by columns that once rose to 100 feet.

“The destruction of Hatra marks a turning point in the appalling strategy of cultural cleansing underway in Iraq,” said Irina Bokova, the director-general of UNESCO, and Abdulaziz Othman Altwaijri, director general of the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) in a joint statement.

“With this latest act of barbarism against Hatra, [the IS group] shows the contempt in

which it holds the history and heritage of Arab people.”

Meanwhile in Syria, Islamic State militants attacked a string of predominantly Christian villages on Saturday, touching off heavy clashes with Kurdish militiamen and their local allies, activists said.

The attack began around dawn and targeted at least three villages near the town of Tal Tamr along the Khabur River in Hassakeh province.

The Islamic State group kidnapped more than 220 Assyrian Christians from the same area last month after overrunning several farming communities on the southern bank of the river.

The fighting Saturday was focused in villages on the northern bank of the river as the militants press to capture Tal Tamr, a strategic crossroads some 20 miles from the city of Hassakeh, said Osama Edwards, director of the Assyrian Network for Human Rights.

“The battles are now very intensive, very violent,” said Edwards, who is based in Sweden. “Tal Tamr is the main goal of the Islamic State, to give them the corridor to the eastern border to Iraq.”

The Islamic State group currently controls about a third of Iraq and Syria.

The PARCC exam has several math and language arts components. Each component takes an estimated 50 minutes for students to complete.

The math portion focuses less on content and more on deeper learning, said Kathy Felt, a math teacher, professor and member of the Illinois Educator Leader Cadre, which assists the state board of education in explaining Common Core and the PARCC assessments.

Felt also said tests focus on coherence and are more rigorous, with an equal emphasis on conceptual understanding, MATH A CHALLENGE procedural skill and fluency Students are taking the and application.

Common Core standards ask for an understanding of why math methods work rather than just teaching the algorithms.

Then that is equal to “90 + 8 + 2 + 2”, which becomes “90 + 10 + 2 = 100 + 2 = 102.”

In addition to multiple choice, students will have to explain some of their answers, and even explain why a subject in a problem arrived at a wrong answer.

In one example from a fourth-grade practice test, stu-

dents are given the statement, “Martin cut a pan of corn bread into equal pieces as shown in the model.” The model shows a basic three-by-four grid.

Students are told that Martin gave a third of the corn bread to his neighbor, and asked to explain how to use the model to show one-third.

Then students need to write a fraction that is equivalent to one-third.

“As a classroom teacher, I can actually see what students put down,” Felt said.

Paul, the principal at Woodland, said students have had difficulty grasping the math.

“There are so many more steps involved with the math,” Paul said. “We’re still gaining new insight on it.”

Language arts isn’t just focused on grammar, spelling and sentence structure. It gauges how students process and retain information.

That means introducing video clips where students have to identify a word’s meaning in a particular context. There is also a greater emphasis on nonfiction such as news media, encyclopedic information and documentaries.

At District 86, third- and sixth-graders are taking a paper-and-pencil form of the exam, while fourth-, fifth-, seventh- and eighth-graders are taking it on computers.

“It’s brand new,” Faifer said. “The kids are used to pencil and paper. But I think they are excited about the technology aspect. I just hope they aren’t distracted by the video or computer format and that they take it seriously.”

The next few questions involved inches and miles, which really heartened me because I, A) got them right and, B) was reminded that Americans will never embrace the metric system. Even if the rest of the world has changed, we

use our own – just like when I was a kid.

There was a question on a fraction multiplying another fraction. Whether it was three groups of four-ninths divided into eight equal parts or eight groups of four-ninths divided into 12 equal parts, I somehow got that one correct as well. I don’t know how. Every time I’ve looked back at it while

writing this paragraph it’s like seeing it new for the first time.

Among the final questions was a drawing of an area model (marked not to scale) where we were asked to write the quotient and remainder for a division problem. Most of my time on the problem was spent wondering why there was an area model when the numbers were already written out in

the question. I also realized quotient is a word for “division answer” only because I remembered what a remainder was and figured it was the other thing.

I somehow ended up with 27 out of 28 on the practice test.

If I’d gotten a perfect score, I think Vikaas would have owed me lunch. Instead, we’ll have to split the bill, but I think

I can scam him into paying more if I cover the quotient ... or remainder ... or whichever one ... wait, hang on.

Colorado, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Arkansas, Rhode Island, Ohio, New Mexico, New Jersey, New York, Maryland and the District of Columbia are joining Illinois in the PARCC initiative, according to the PARCC website.

But each state can tailor the PARCC assessment to its own Common Core standards. Illinois has given local school districts curriculum control while mandating that students eventually achieve state standards through PARCC assessments.

Troy School District 30-C Curriculum and Assessment Director Daniella Fountain said Troy has prepared for the PARCC tests by focusing on incorporating the Common Core principles into curriculum for the past four years.

Troy started PARCC testing students March 2.

“The biggest takeaway so far is it’s been going well,” Fountain said of the few days students have taken the test.

“Overall, it’s been a very smooth implementation.

You’re going to have small connectivity issues, but we were able to easily fix it for those students.”

Special Education Director Deb Marco, who also is on Troy’s Common Core administrative team, said teacher feedback has been positive.

“There’s a little fear of the unknown going in,” Marco said. “But we’ve seen the students have the stamina to complete the test.”

Dear Mr. Berko: Please give me your thoughts on Yahoo. I bought 1,000 shares in 2012 at $17 when Marissa Mayer was named the CEO. A friend of mine who worked with her for nine years at Google tells me that she is brilliant, no-nonsense and a driven workaholic who can succeed at anything she wants. My stock has tripled in value because of Mayer, whom he calls the Golden Girl.

My question is: Should I sell my 1,000 shares, which are now worth $50 each, and take a $33,000 profit or hold, hoping that Mayer will continue to work magic with Yahoo and push it up toward $100 a share?

My broker thinks I should sell Yahoo because he thinks that Mayer, who is a brilliant software/computer scientist, doesn’t have the skills to manage a sales organization and that she’s taken Yahoo as far as it can go. – LC, Wilmington, N.C.

TAKING STOCK Malcolm Berko Dear LC: I hope you took your broker’s advice, because Yahoo (YHOO) is now $42.85. YHOO didn’t triple in value because of Mayer. It tripled in value, to $51, when Alibaba’s initial public offering put $6.3 billion (after taxes) in YHOO’s bank account; Mayer just happened to be CEO at the time. She had zip to do with Alibaba, which was a YHOO asset for years before the Golden Girl assumed the CEO-ship.

YHOO is still dependent on old-fashioned display advertising and Web searching for 75 percent of its business. A year after Marissa Mayer was named CEO, she engineered the purchases of Tumblr for $1 billion, Overture for $1.6 billion and Inktomi for $235 million.

And with MM at the top slot, revenues still declined by $400 million, to $4.6 billion, in 2014, and net income also declined.

Revenue gains this year are expected to be flat as a flapjack, and YHOO’s net profits may be lower again. The bright spot at YHOO was the September IPO of its stake in Alibaba, which increased YHOO’s cash hoard to $12 billion. A coterie of YHOO insiders believed that MM would use a portion of this cash to pay a dividend. Not so.

This ballerina preferred to use the cash to boost shareholder returns via an enhanced buyback program. The Golden Girl purchased 15 million shares late last year, and additional purchases are expected in 2015.

And rumor has it that MM is considering several smaller acquisitions again to broaden YHOO’s product line.

YHOO badly needs to grow its stagnant revenues, and growing revenues, according to most

corporate CEOs, is often a good method to improve a company’s earnings. However, improving revenues is not MM’s strong suit. In fact, it may be beneath her. Rather, this gal is one heck of a high-class techie. She got a master’s degree in computer science from Stanford University in 1999, with a specialization in artificial intelligence. She even holds several patents on artificial intelligence and interface design. MM joined Google after graduation – holding key jobs in Google Search, Books, Maps, News and Gmail – but her two-plus years at YHOO suggests that she knows beans about managing a sales force and borscht about raising revenues. However, MM seems to believe she can grow profits by cutting costs. Be mindful that she is not an experienced people manager. When the Ice Queen, as some call her, reduced employee count by 11 percent last year, it wasn’t surprising that

her chilly management style caused a number of high-profile defections.

Between whiles, neither she nor her management team has done anything to meliorate the loss of these key people. Sadly, there’s nothing in her playbook about employing a marketing professional to increase revenues from YHOO’s numerous products.

I think YHOO is overpriced.

I think the Golden Girl is running out of charisma, and there’s talk about a merger with AOL, which is half YHOO’s size. I think AOL’s CEO, Tim Armstrong, would be a better CEO after a merger. If you haven’t sold your position already, I think you should take 500 shares off the table.

NEW LENOX – The Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons has granted a three-year accreditation to the cancer program at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox.

In order to maintain and receive accreditation, facilities must ensure its patients have access to the full scope of services required to diagnose, treat, rehabilitate and support patients with cancer and their families, according to a news release from Silver Cross. Facilities also go through continuous evaluation to reaffirm its commitment of the program to provide quality cancer care.

CoC-approved cancer programs must undergo an on-site evaluation every three years to maintain accreditation. The facility must demonstrate a commendation level of compliance with numerous standards that represent the full scope of the cancer program, including

institutional and programmatic resources, cancer committee leadership, cancer data management and registry operations, clinical management, research, community outreach, professional education and staff support and quality improvement.

Thanks, coach

After our parents, our coaches are often the most influential people in our lives. Sometimes more so.

That’s why the loss of Gordie Gillespie has cut so deep, and touched so many.

Gillespie’s coaching achievements are near unattainable. Coaching half a dozen different programs in the area on both the high school and college levels, Gillespie compiled a little more than 2,400 victories during the course of his 65 years in Joliet. In that time, Gillespie affected thousands of players who have since scattered around the country, carrying his lessons with them for a lifetime.

There’s little doubt his influence was immense, with more than 15,000 posts left in memorial to Gillespie since his death on a social media page set up by his family.

“Everything he did, he did out of love,” former University of St. Francis athlete Les Norman said at Gillespie’s wake this week. “He would be the first person to tell you we all make mistakes. He was a good person and he taught by example.”

Some argue sports means too much to people. Maybe, when winning at all costs becomes the focus.

Winning aside, athletics offer valuable lessons to young people. Through dedication and practice, young

athletes come to understand what it means to commit to something, to achieve and to be part of something bigger than themselves.

Gordie got his players to believe they were better, that they could accomplish more, than they themselves thought possible. That is the mark of a truly unique coach and person.

Years later, they cherish those experiences, and when they have a coach whose love for them and their success transcends the sport itself, they come to cherish those coaches, as well.

“His records will never be touched,” said Pat Sullivan, who played at Lewis for Gillespie and later worked hand-in-hand with him in the athletic department at St. Francis. “They’re incredible. Yet the most important thing is that none of that matters. His impact on people far exceeds all of that.”

For those precious decades that he was here, his players had the chance to experience a mentor few could hope to come across.

The Will County area, perhaps all of sports, may never see another like him.

And so, although he’s gone, we offer one last thought we hope many others shared with him before it was too late: Thank you coach, for everything.

Students set to start PARCC testing soon in District 202 District 202 has been on the “road to the Common Core” for nearly five years.

District 202 will start the process to see how far we have come down that road by administering the first-ever Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers test, starting Monday.

The PARCC will gauge how well our students are doing meeting the Common Core state learning standards. Most everyone knows that the Common Core standards – and now PARCC –have come under fire in recent years. Most of that criticism has been political in nature, based on media-driven misunderstanding and misinformation.

I am not going to debate those criticisms here. Nor will I comment on the flaws and challenges inherent in Common Core and PARCC that

Rather, I will stress what is most important at this juncture: both the Common Core standards and the PARCC test are intended to help our students prepare for and succeed in the world in which they will live and work.

It is crucial to understand that assessment is a vital part of the teaching and learning process. Standardized assessment is just one form, though it is the one that gets the most public attention and scrutiny, both good and bad.

Teachers routinely assess

their students both formally and informally to ensure that the students are actually learning and progressing. We know that standardized test results do not show all of the talents and skills of our students, though the media often wrongly portray them as if that is the case. Still, politics and public opinion aside, the Common Core standards and PARCC are now a part of our assessment program.

The Common Core state learning standards were created by state governors, education experts and business leaders – not the federal government – in part to fix a big problem with the No Child Left Behind law: namely, that individual states got to create their own learning standards.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Canada shows U.S. failure

Canada has a well-founded reputation for dangerous exports: dirty oil. Strong beer.

The occasional bad pop song.

Hockey fights. Hockey hair.

The Canadian tuxedo.

Still, the U.S. pharmaceutical industry’s concern about a law that let Maine residents buy prescription drugs from Canada is a little odd.

There’s no evidence medicines from Canadian pharmacies pose any greater safety risk than those bought in the U.S. Yet industry trade groups last week persuaded a judge to overturn the law, on the narrow grounds that drug importations are a federal matter. Drugmakers are probably more concerned with price than with safety. In Canada, drugs often cost much less than in the U.S. That’s what made the Maine law popular.

But consider what makes Canadian drugs so much cheaper in the first place.

Canadians are no better than Americans at mixing and packaging chemical compounds. The difference is they let government health care plans use their buying power to negotiate lower drug prices.

But those programs pale in size next to Medicare, which this year will spend an estimated $87 billion on prescription drugs. The 2003 law that created Medicare’s Part D prescription drug benefit included a “noninterference clause,” which specifically prevents the agency from negotiating lower prices. But Canada and the VA have shown you don’t need to cover every drug to give beneficiaries the options they need.

dgoss@shawmedia.com FRANKFORT – When the Plainfield North boys basketball team scored the final nine points of the third quarter to erase a 35-27 deficit and take a 36-35 lead, it appeared the Tigers were en route to a Class 4A Bolingbrook Sectional appearance.

But within the first three minutes of the fourth quarter Friday night, Plainfield East senior point guard Wynston Wright helped change everything, propelling the Bengals to a 56-44 victory over North in

the championship game of the Lincoln-Way North Regional.

That means No. 6 seed East (18-11) will face Bolingbrook at 7 p.m. Wednesday in a sectional semifinal. North, the 3 seed, finished 22-5 and with a Southwest Prairie Conference championship, but without the prize the Tigers wanted more than any other.

“We had two bad defensive possessions at the start of the fourth quarter when they broke us down and got layups, and the next time they took it right to the hole,” Tigers coach Bob Krahulik.

Those heroics gave East, which won the season series over North two games to one, a 43-37 lead with 5:07 remaining.

After the Bengals extended it to 45-37 at the 3:58 mark, the Tigers got within six on three occasions but never closer as East hit 13 of 16 fourth-quarter

free throws and 23 of 28 in all.

“After that third quarter, where I think we had eight turnovers, we looked to attack,” East coach Branden Adkins said. “We did, we got good ball movement and we got some layups underneath.”

North was 11 of 22 from the free-throw line, shot 32.6 percent from the field after going 3 of 18 in the fourth quarter and was outrebounded, 15-4, in the final quarter and, 36-23, for the game.

“We battled,” Krahulik said. “Our kids gave it all they had. But we didn’t execute our offensive sets. We were stag-

nant, motionless. That and the free-throw shooting really hurt us.”

As much as Wright contributed on the offensive end at crunch time, it was his defense all night long against North’s main man, 6-foot-5 Trevor Stumpe, that stood out. Stumpe finished with 20 points on 6 of 20 shooting and was limited to zero points in the second quarter and two in the fourth quarter.

No other Tiger reached double figures. Kevin Krieger had nine points.

ROMEOVILLE – Many obstacles stood between the Joliet Central boys basketball team and the Class 4A Romeoville Regional championship Friday night, but the two biggest were Prentiss Nixon and Dimitri Akenten.

The Steelmen couldn’t get past the senior duo as Bolingbrook escaped Central, 48-42, in overtime to advance to the Bolingbrook Sectional semifinals, where Plainfield East will be the opponent at 7 p.m.

Wednesday.

“We haven’t won a regional since 2009,” said Akenten, who scored 13 points. “We came out with a lot of emotion and energy. We executed, played as a team and never gave up, never gave up faith. God was with us, and we came out on top.”

Akenten had something on his side during the overtime minutes. The 6-foot-4 forward scored seven of the team’s 10 points in overtime.

With 24.5 seconds remaining and the score tied at 42 in OT, Akenten grabbed a rebound, scored and was fouled.

After missing his free throw, he rebounded, scored again and this time completed the traditional three-point play, making it 47-42 and diminishing Central’s hopes of a regional title.

The Steelmen, the No. 7 seed in the sectional, had split two SouthWest Suburban Blue games against the second-seeded Raiders.

“Dimitri made two great plays down the stretch in overtime that really put us over the hump,” Bolingbrook coach Rob Brost said. “That’s the kind of player he is. He makes hustle plays all of the time and does the right thing for us. I’m really proud that he stayed with it and made the play.”

Another player who hustled throughout was Nixon.

Even though the Colorado State-bound guard was limited to six points in the first half, no one could catch him after that.

His 18 points were not the only thing that helped get the Raiders (21-6) rolling. Nixon

I knew that we were going to make a run for it. We were going to tie it up and if we forced overtime, we were going to take it.”

Brodric Thomas and Julian Torres, who scored six points apiece, also scored at critical points to keep Bolingbrook in the game. Thomas made a free throw to give the Raiders their last point with 16.4 seconds remaining.

While Thomas made four points on free throws, Central could only make one as a team.

Indians put up fight in eventual loss

Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – The Neuqua Valley boys basketball team overcame a determined Minooka squad to win the Class 4A Joliet West Regional championship, 41-33, Friday night.

The top-seeded Wildcats (264) advance to the Bolingbrook Sectional semifinals, where they will meet Providence at 7 p.m Tuesday. The eighth-seeded Indians, who reached a regional final for the first time in 15 years, finished 15-16.

Neuqua Valley led Minooka, 30-16, at the start of the fourth quarter, but the Indians used a 13-3 scoring run to cut the deficit to 33-29 with 4:12 to play. The Wildcats milked the clock down to 2:28 before turning it over. A driving layup by

sophomore guard Jon Butler cut the lead to 33-31 with 2:02 left.

Neuqua senior guard Demond George (10 points) answered with a driving layup to put the Wildcats ahead, 35-31, with 1:28 to play. Minooka’s Joe Butler then got to the foul line and sank two free throws to make it 35-33 with 1:04 to play.

George answered by driving down the lane for another layup to give the Wildcats some breathing room at 37-33 with 50 seconds left.

The Indians’ hopes ended when junior guard Jon Lamas was called for an offensive foul while driving the lane.

“We were trying to pressure them into making mistakes,” Jon Butler said. “We tried to hound them and clog up their passing lanes.”

“We just battled,” Minooka coach Scott Tanaka said.

“We were resilient. I think having our backs against the wall helped us to play better.

We had them on the ropes, and I think minus a couple of layups we would have gotten them.

“They (the Butlers) just epitomize the toughness of Minooka basketball in everything they do whether it’s at the offensive end or the defensive end. They weren’t going to accept a loss out there.”

The Wildcats didn’t score until Alex Edwards sank a 3-pointer with 2:25 to play in the first quarter. Neuqua Valley, however, managed to take a 7-6 lead into the second quarter.

“We were every bit ready to battle. The kids gave every ounce of energy they had,” Tanaka said. “We’re a defensive basketball team and even though they are capable of putting up 80 to 90 points, we knew we could stop them defensively. We don’t let people run their offense. We just play tough.”

The difference in the game

was the second quarter. Minooka did not score a point.

Fortunately for the Indians, Neuqua Valley only scored seven, so the halftime score was 14-6. The game still was in reach.

“That was the key to the basketball game,” Tanaka said. “We went cold. We got point-blank shots. We had some open threes. They just didn’t fall, and Neuqua does a great job of limiting you to just one opportunity.”

Joe Butler, who led Minooka with 15 points, agreed.

“We struggle offensively from time to time,” he said.

“We were trying to figure out what our scoring options were and when we did figure it out and got open shots, we couldn’t get them to drop. It was one of those days.”

“One more shot, one more free throw, one more stop, one more something and it’s a completely different story,” Corcoran said. “It would’ve been us walking out, holding that plaque.”

Central gave its all. Like Nixon and Akenten, the Steelmen’s junior guard, Taquan Sims, had a dominating performance with 16 points. Classmate Malik Fuller scored eight points. Senior Kenyon Woodfork contributed seven points and Darius Stokes hit two 3-pointers for six points.

Another problem Central had was size. While Bolingbrook has six players 6-3 or taller, Central has one. From that perspective, things didn’t look positive for the Steelmen going into the game, but they never stopped hustling.

“We don’t have a 6-9 and two other Division I athletes on the floor,” Corcoran said. “We just have kids that believe in what we’re trying to do. They’re going to go out and when we get pushed around, we push them back. It’s a credit to the kind of kids that we have.”

“That was a new experience for us, obviously, with what they put out there,” St. Edward coach P.J. White said of Reed-Custer’s attack. “So the whole idea was to try to keep them below what they were normally scoring and to try to not let them shoot as many uncontested 3-points shots, and I thought that our kids did a pretty good job a that.

“And when you’re shooting the 3s, there’s lots of rebounds, so the other part of that was to not them get as many offensive rebounds, and our offense had to take care of itself. Everybody was a little bit nervous about all of the 3-point stuff, but once we figured out that they were like anyone else and we could play with them, it was a nice four-quarter game.

“Wynston has been our rock every game,” Kotopka said. “He is our best on-ball defender and our best all-around

The 6-5 Kotopka, the Bengals’ football quarterback and a physical presence inside, had been debating whether to come out for basketball when football season ended.

He decided to play and recently was elevated to the starting lineup. Along with 6-8 James Claar and the 6-7 Goss, that gives East a formidable front line.

“Cole came out and gave us all he had this season,” Jordan said. “We got this regional championship for him.”

“We’ve got all these tall, skinny guys on this team,” Kotopka laughed. “I had to provide a little muscle.”

Goss finished with 12 rebounds and 10 points. Kotopka had five boards and eight points.

Jordan, who scored 12 points in the first quarter, closed with a game-high 25 points while taking only 12 shots from the field. He was 7 of 12 to go with 10 of 12 from the free-throw line.

“This feels great,” Jordan said. “I’m kind of speechless right now.”

EL PASO – Reed-Custer’s boys basketball team accomplished most of its goals for the 2014-15 season but was unable to achieve the biggest one of them all.

After falling in last year’s sectional title game to Paris, the Comets hoped to go further this season, but St. Edward had other ideas in the Class 2A El Paso-Gridley Sectional final.

The Green Wave grabbed the early advantage and led nearly throughout as they defeated Reed-Custer, 85-69, Friday to capture their first sectional championship since 1997.

St. Edward (26-5), which set a school record for wins in a season, advances to Tuesday’s Northern Illinois University Supersectional, where it faces Rockridge (29-1), which won, 46-34, over Winnebago in the Farmington Sectional final.

The Comets (25-6), who had the most wins in their program since 1963 – when the school last won a sectional title – were trying to advance to the final eight for only the second time in their history, with the other coming in 1938, when they lost to Dundee in the state title game.

“They took us out of a lot of things that we wanted to do,” Comets coach Mark Por-

The game didn’t start well for Reed-Custer, which shot 2 of 13 from the floor and 0 of 2 from the line while turning the ball over five times in the first 6:16 to fall behind, 13-4. Its struggles at the line continued throughout, as it made only 12 of 30 attempts.

Travis Schoonover (22 points, six rebounds) hit a 3-pointer from beyond halfcourt at the buzzer to pull Reed-Custer to within 18-12 after the first quarter. A 7-0 run featured five points by Schoonover created his team’s biggest lead, 31-28, in the second quarter.

St. Edward regained the advantage, however, by going on a 12-6 run to close out the half. Nick Duffy (27 points, 12 rebounds) scored six of those points while Sean Phelan added the last four to give the Green Wave a 40-37 halftime lead.

Reed-Custer closed to within 50-48 in the third quarter on a 3-pointer by Mason Dransfeldt (11 points, eight rebounds), but St. Edward closed out the quarter with an 8-0 run and then added two more buckets to start the fourth to grab a 62-48 advantage.

Boykin, Howat lead Celtics to win

The red-hot Providence boys basketball team continued its amazing run Friday night, defeating Oswego, 58-42, to claim the Class 4A Yorkville Regional championship. It was the 14th regional crown in Celtics basketball history and the third regional title in the five years under coach Tim Trendel.

The Celtics were led by seniors Miles Boykin and Troy Howat. Boykin finished with 17 points, 10 rebounds, three steals, three blocks and three assists. Howat scored 10 of his 16 points in the second half

and handed out three assists.

“Something like this just hasn’t sunk in yet,” Trendel said. “It’s a tremendous accomplishment to win this regional. We played another outstanding game defensively, holding Oswego to 42 points.

Miles (Boykin) and Troy (Howat) are our senior leaders and led us to this regional championship.”

Oswego (17-13) hung with the Celtics in the first half behind Panther junior guard Malique Ross (17 points, three steals), who scored a dozen points in the first 16 minutes.

The Celtics took a 27-21 lead at the break. Boykin matched Ross with 12 first-half points and hauled down five rebounds.

Providence (21-9) scored the first five points of the third quarter to open a 32-21 lead, highlighted by a 3-pointer by Howat with 7:11 left in the quarter.

With 3:34 left in the third quarter, Boykin and fellow Class 7A state champion football standout Nate Vejvoda (five points, three rebounds, three steals) took center stage.

Vejvoda’s dunk on a feed from senior point guard Tyler Pygon (four assists, three rebounds) was followed by a Boykin steal and layup on a feed from Howat for a 43-27 lead with 3:11 left in the quarter. The Celtics took a 45-32 lead into the fourth quarter.

“Everyone is playing so well for us,” Boykin said,

“Jake [Rost] and Jack [Brody] kept the middle open for me all night. Troy’s outside shooting and Tyler ‘s [Pygon’s] floor leadership allowed me to have a huge game.”

In the fourth quarter, Howat put the finishing touch on the regional championship. With 6:40 left, Howat’s second 3-poiner gave the Celtics a 48-32 lead.

A Howat jumper made it 5237 and Howat’s assist led to a Vejvoda dunk and a 54-37 Providence lead with 3:15 left.

Brody (seven points, seven rebounds, two blocks, assist) scored a layup with 2:30 left, giving the Celtics their largest lead at 57-37.

“I know I always say this but it’s so true,” Howat said.

“We play so well as a team and that continues to benefit all of us in this tremendous run that we are on. I had a fine game tonight but once again I owe it to all of my teammates for making me better.”

Rost had a good all-around game as well with eight points, six rebounds, two assists and a steal.

Up next for the Chicago Catholic League Tournament champion Celtics is a date with Upstate Eight Conference Valley Division champion Neuqua Valley at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Bolingbrook Sectional semifinal.

“Neuqua Valley is a great team and it should be a great game on Tuesday at Bolingbrook,” Trendel said.

The members of the Joliet Jaguar Mite Zschach team could not be sure before last Sunday, however, that the extra time they have spent on the ice over the past few weeks would have such immediate and gratifying results.

The extra investment in time left these 7- and 8-yearolds not just with the sore legs and stinky jerseys they would come to expect, but also with a Northern Illinois Hockey Leagues Wolves Cup Championship in the Mite Silver division.

In the championship game, coach Ken Zschach’s Mighty Mites needed 4 minutes, 36 seconds of overtime to get the job done.

COAL CITY – For about a minute or so, things looked pretty good for the Morris boys basketball team Friday night.

The Redskins scored the first two baskets of the Class 3A Coal City Regional title game against top-seeded Lincoln-Way West, as Jake Walker scored on a jumper and Griffin Sobol got a pass from Evan Bjelland and scored underneath.

Lincoln-Way West then scored the next seven points before Morris’ Austin Patterson tied the game at 7 with a 3-pointer.

From then on, though, it was all West.

The Warriors (20-7) scored the next 20 points over the final minutes of the first quarter and the start of the second en route to a 68-42 victory.

Sophomore Marco Pettinato had seven of his team-leading 15 points in the run.

Lincoln-Way West, which claimed the first boys basketball regional title in school history, made its first seven shots of the second quarter, eventually building a 31-9 lead before Morris (18-10) closed the first half on an 8-2 spurt to pull to within 33-17 at halftime.

“We were fortunate that everyone seemed to be firing on all cylinders offensively,” Lincoln-Way West coach Brian Flaherty said. “We were all on the same page.

“I have to give praise to Morris. They are a wellcoached team and they run a lot of stuff that’s hard to defend. We have been a pretty good defensive team all year, but when we are playing offensively like we did tonight, we can be pretty tough to beat.”

That continued in the second half. After Morris closed the gap to 12 points a couple of times, West went on an 10-0 spurt to take a 45-23 lead. Jon Marotta, who scored 14 points along with Trace Howard, had three buckets in the run, while Howard had a basket and a pair of free throws. The

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Saint Xavier University senior guard Jack Krieger (Plainfield North) was among 10 players selected nationwide to represent the NAIA on the NAIA Division II Men’s Basketball All-Star team.

The NABC-NAIA Men’s Basketball All-Star Game will be at 8 p.m., March 21 at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Missouri, in conjunction with the 78th Annual Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship. The 10 players will take on the Division I All-Stars at the NABC-NAIA Men’s Basketball All-Star Game.

Krieger, a first-team all-conference pick, led both Saint Xavier and the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference in scoring at 22.4 points while also averaging team bests of 6.1 rebounds and 2.5 made 3-pointers. Krieger joins senior guard Tony Smit from Cardinal Stritch as the two representatives from the CCAC. “This is a great honor for Jack and I think a nice exclamation point on what has been a standout career at Saint Xavier University,” said SXU coach Tom O’Malley in a news release. “He was a leader for our team all season and definitely one of the top players in our very competitive conference this year.

“Being named a NAIA AllStar means that he has established himself as one of the premier players across the entire NAIA and I think he will represent our school and program well on this national stage.”

closed its annual spring break trip with the comeback win over Wayne State (Nebraska) in a nonconference game.

Senior Mike Barajas’ solo home run in the first inning was the highlight of a threerun first for the Flyers. Wayne State went ahead 5-3, but Barajas then doubled and scored in the fifth to make it 5-4.

It stayed 5-4 until the seventh. However, Kane Lombardo reached on an error and scored on another error. The Flyers (4-4) eventually loaded the bases and freshman Ethan Bloom delivered a two-run double, knocking in the decisive runs.

Mike Enriquez threw a scoreless eighth and sophomore Sam Couch (Joliet Catholic) a perfect ninth for his first save. Senior Eann Cox (20) threw a scoreless seventh in relief and earned the win.

Florida, Lewis split its games for the fourth consecutive day as the Flyers earned the 2-1 regional victory over Saginaw Valley State but fell, 3-2, in the nightcap against Southern New Hampshire in the final day of their Florida nonconference swing.

Against SVSU (8-9), Lewis (9-6) Kelsey Ullrich’s two-run single in the seventh inning erased a 1-0 deficit and was the game-winner. Lewis senior Kelly Bowler (Lockport) picked up the complete-game victory. Bowler (8-3) allowed one run and six hits while fanning seven.

Against Southern New Hampshire (9-2), the Penmen touched Lewis starter Lainie Schweickert (1-3) for three runs in the third inning, including a two-run homer by pitcher Ali Maloof. That would be all that Maloof needed as she struck out 10 and limited Lewis to two unearned, runs and four hits in the complete-game victory.

New Trier beats H-F for third place in Class 4A The ASSOCIATED PRESS NORMAL – Jeannie Boehm scored 22 points to lead Winnetka New Trier past Homewood-Flossmoor, 43-41, on Saturday to take third place in the Class 4A girls basketball state tournament at Illinois State’s Redbird Arena.

In a game where the lead changed hands nine times, New Trier (31-2) finally was able to pull ahead for good late in the third quarter, thanks to Boehm’s hot hand and a suffocating defense. Boehm also grabbed 13 rebounds. Kathryn Pedi scored seven points for New Trier, while Rachel West added six.

The Vikings (20-8) were led

by Nadia Green’s 12 points, while Faith Suggs and Bria Stallworth added nine points each. The Vikings lost to Benet Academy, 77-71, in Friday’s semifinals, while New Trier was crushed by Palatine, 5728.

The bottom line on the Bears’ trade of Brandon Marshall to the New York Jets is it’s addition by subtraction regardless of what the mid- to late-round draft choice compensation is, and the Bears are the big winners.

Marshall’s presence had become more than a distraction to his coaches, teammates and the Bears’ front office. He was like a cloud hanging over the team and the inescapable stamp of dysfunction put on it by former general manager Phil Emery.

Yes, Marshall was an AllPro in terms of production and individual honors and probably will continue to be one of the top five pass catchers in the NFL. But exactly how many wins and trips to the playoffs did that translate to for the Bears?

In fact, how many wins and playoff trips has it translated to for any of the three teams he has played with over his nine-year NFL career?

You got it: zero and zero.

Pro football is the ultimate team sport, and Marshall is as serious a team-buster as I’ve seen in 37 years covering the game. He has demonstrated a half-life of about two or three seasons with any team he’s been with – Marshall was injured a good part of his rookie campaign in Denver – and the outcome is always the same.

The reasons are sensitive and difficult to discuss while trying to remain fair to Marshall, who might not be a bad person.

The Marshall we’ve seen in Chicago actually has been a good person, but a bad teammate because of his self-diagnosed and proclaimed mental illness. Mental illness is as difficult a disease or combination of diseases as there are to deal with. Marshall clearly suffers from some form or another, and for that he deserves our sympathy, not our scorn.

But the reason I have to qualify him as perhaps not a bad person is in the early years of his career he com-

The real problem with Marshall today is there are many folks who struggle with mental illness and find ways to become good people and good teammates. Marshall is

nowhere near there yet.

His constant need for the spotlight, often at the expense of teammates and the team, and me-first attitude about everything creates an impossible environment in the locker room, on the sideline and in the huddle. That is why he absolutely had to go.

Here is the most important part of all of this, and it’s the really good news: GM Ryan Pace and coach John Fox get it.

It appeared obvious in the tone and between the lines of most of their comments that

the business of healing their football team couldn’t begin with Marshall here, and now they’ve wasted no time in getting the job done.

Yes, it leaves the Bears in need of No. 1 and No. 3 receivers. But there are plenty of free agents such as the recently wooed Brian Hartline who can be a fine three, and if ever there was a draft to find a No. 1, this could be it.

College students see life differently after participating in Diocese of Joliet mission trip

REST HILL – Nadia Tourjman, 21, a student at Benedictine University in Lisle, said she was surprised by the generosity of the Filipino children.

On one of the last days she was in the Philippines, Tourjman made a cheese sandwich – they usually only had peanut butter, she said – and gave it to one of the little girls in the village.

As the mission group drove away, Tourjman said she turned around to see if the girl would eat it.

“Instead of taking it for herself, she was breaking the sandwich up into all these little pieces to share with the other kids her age,” Tourjman said. “I was so surprised because she didn’t have anything to eat, yet she was willing to share her food.”

From Dec. 27 through Jan. 10, five group leaders and 22 students traveled to the Philippines to complete mission work through the Diocese of Joliet’s Partnership in Mission program. The work included building and painting homes.

Several students previously participated in mission trips, and some were new to the experience. But as the students were blessing others with their work, spending time with the residents blessed them right back with a change of perspective.

One of those students was Kristina Mallari, 20, of Plainfield, a University of Illinois-Chicago student. Mallari had never done mission work, but was interested in this trip partly because of her Filipino roots.

Mallari had only gone to the Philippines once – for a family funeral – and she wanted to experience the culture and daily life. The downside was that the trip was sched-

“Every time I come back from a trip, I come back a changed person,” Beck said, “a person that I like even more. We all get caught up living here, with technology and all that. Going there, you see how people live and you see things differently. I try to live simpler. I feel like I donate half my clothes whenever I come home from one of those trips.”

Meeting and working with villagers also was a great learning experience, Beck said. She even began learning the language, and the nuances of the different dialects.

But the most rewarding part about working within the community was the interaction with the children, Beck added. On the first or second day of the trip, when collecting rocks to build the foundation of a house, Beck recalled, the kids helped fill up the bags and carry them back to the site.

“It was really cool to have three or four kids walking with me,” Beck said, “and then we would race back.”

Justin Kovalsky, 22, of Bolingbrook, a Benedictine University student, said he was struck by Filipinos’ hospitality, and the sense of peace he felt while on the trip.

North Central College has been awarded a distinguished Center for Undergraduate Research in Mathematics minigrant to support participating faculty members in setting up an undergraduate research group for the 2015-2016 academic year.

Marco V. Martinez, assistant professor of mathematics, and Gregory Ruthig, assistant professor of biology, are co-principal investigators on

the project.

They will collaborate to develop mathematical models to determine how molds affect amphibian populations.

Martinez selected four students as part of the team: juniors Rebecca Rachan of Lemont and Dana Lacey of Yorkville, sophomore Taylor Spino of Plainfield, and freshman Lisette Herrera of Roselle.

All are female and skilled mathematics majors; some are first-generation college students and minority students.

PLAINFIELD – For the young babysitter – ages 11 and up – this clinic will teach the various aspects of babysitting and staying home alone.

Each participant who attends the session, demonstrates all skills correctly, and completes all course work sheets and quizzes will be eligible to receive a certificate of completion. Please bring a sack lunch and a drink (no glass bottles).

The clinic is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 14. It will be held at the Streams Recreation Center, 24319 Cedar Creek Lane, Plainfield. Cost is $30 for residents and $45 for nonresidents. Call 815-436-8812.

District 157-C will conduct kindergarten registration FRANKFORT – Frankfort School District 157-C will conduct kindergarten registration for children who will be entering kindergarten for the 2015-2016 school year.

All children who will be 5 years of age on or before Sept. 1, 2015 are eligible for entry into kindergarten in the fall.

Registration will be held by appointment only between March 23 and May 15, 2015, at the District 157-C Administrative Office, 10482 W. Nebraska St., Frankfort. Beginning March 17, parents should call the district office at 815-469-5922 to make an appointment for registration.

When parents come to their appointment, they will need to provide required documentation before kindergarten registration and payment can be completed online.

JOLIET – Joliet Township High School needs parents, community members, business representatives, educators and alumni to judge student U.S. History and World Affairs presentations.

There is no preparation or prior knowledge of history necessary to participate.

All materials and instructions will be provided on the day of the event. Volunteers do not need to stay all day. Breakfast and lunch will be provided to volunteers.

Students celebrate ‘100th Day’

FRANKFORT – On Feb. 17, the fourth-grade students from Indian Trail Elementary School in Frankfort visited Pilcher Park Nature Center in Joliet for the performance “Tales of the Underground.”

Each student became a passenger on the “Underground Railroad,” receiving a name of an actual escaped slave.

They learned secret codes to use to protect them on their journey, listened to stories of

actual slaves from the Underground Railroad, and learned how to create an escape code through the creation of a quilt square. At the conclusion, each student found out what happened to their slave on their journey.

Then on Feb. 25, the thirdgrade students went to Naper Settlement in Naperville.

Each class made iron pins in the blacksmith shop. Students also visited the print shop, a log house and a oneroom schoolhouse.

Indian Trail students learn from field trips

FRANKFORT – Lincoln-Way North High School faculty member Julia Johnson in Frankfort has been nominated for the University of Saint Francis Teacher of the Month Award by a former student currently attending the university.

Johnson teaches art and reading at Lincoln-Way North High School and has worked for Lincoln-Way High School Julia District 210 Johnson for 18 years.

Previously she taught at Lincoln-Way East High School where she also served as a freshman pom coach, head pom coach and varsity winter pom coach.

She also spent several years volunteering in the Flossmoor Community Church Youth Group. She grew up in Illinois.

Johnson earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in art education at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and her Master of Arts degree in arts education, also from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

JOLIET – Recently, Joliet West High School Advanced Multi Media students participated in the SWSC Newspaper Conference, bringing home top accolades and awards.

As a team, six entries were submitted and the students won in five of six categories.

JOLIET – Skaters from the Joliet Park District placed in the top five in a national competition in St. Louis.

The park district’s Inwood Ice Arena skaters took second place out of 21 figure skating teams from seven different states at the ISI Winter Classic competition in February. With only 42 competing skaters ranging from Tot Level to Freestyle 7, one production team and

five compulsory teams, the Joliet Park District had 903 overall team points – behind only St. Peters RecPlex, the host rink team for the ISI Winter Classic, who collected 1075.5 points. The Joliet Park District Inwood Ice Arena has been home to many families and athletes since 1959. The ice arena provides a skate school program on select days of the week for residents and nonresidents of the Joliet area. The ice arena also offers public skate sessions seven days a week.

ROMEOVILLE – The National Science Foundation has awarded Lewis University in Romeoville a $613,428 grant for the “Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Connections” program.

The funds will assist in the creation of a five-year scholarship program for chemistry, biochemistry, physics, and chemical physics students at Lewis University. The program is set to begin in the fall semester under the direction of Jason Keleher, associate professor and chair of chemistry, and Joseph Kozminski, associate

professor and chair of physics.

The approximately dozen students that are selected for the “STEM Connections” program each fall at Lewis will receive advanced training through this grant funding that will provide a solid foundation for excelling in STEM-related employment and graduate school.

The students are expected to explore real-world STEM concerns, such as alternative energy, novel materials for information storage, next-generation health care materials and advanced optical technology.

• Antibiotics. Certain antibiotics (available as creams, gels, lotions or combination products) can be applied directly to the skin to reduce the growth of acne-causing bacteria.

Serious cases are sometimes treated with oral antibiotics.

• Birth control pills.

Estrogens (female hormones) decrease sebum production, and androgens (male hormones also made by women) increase sebum production. For that reason, birth control pills (with estrogens) are a treatment. So is a medicine that blocks androgens – spironolactone.

Dear Doctor K: I am in my 40s, but my face resembles a teenager’s • and not in a good way. What can I do to clear up my adult acne?

Dear reader: Acne is most common during the teenage years. But it may appear for the first time, or worsen, at the start of menopause.

Acne begins in hair follicles – little pits in the skin, each containing a hair. Glands at the bottom of the follicle make an oily substance called sebum.

The sebum normally oozes up to the top of the follicle and onto the skin.

In acne, an overgrowth of skin cells can plug up the top of the follicle. As a result, the sebum is trapped below the surface of the skin. Bacteria that normally live on the skin get into the sebum and start to multiply. This leads the body’s immune system to attack the bacteria, causing inflammation.

Adult acne may appear on your face as: • Whiteheads (closed, plugged oil glands) • Blackheads (open, plugged oil glands) • Pustules (swollen red bumps, sometimes filled with pus) Treatments for acne try to stop the follicle from getting plugged up, to reduce the production of sebum and to stop the bacteria from multiplying. Fortunately, many treatments are available.

Treatment usually begins with one of the following: • Salicylic acid washes.

These formulas loosen dead skin cells. They also help dislodge plugs from whiteheads and blackheads.

Salicylic acid washes are available over-the-counter and by prescription, but the prescription versions aren’t any stronger.

• Benzoyl peroxide gels, lotions and washes. These products dry and peel the skin and help clear blocked pores. They also fight bacterial growth. (Bacteria are both a cause and effect of acne.) They are available over-the-counter and

Make a point of staying in touch by calling to ask how she and her husband are doing.

Tell her you know she may be overwhelmed, and volunteer to bring food if she’s too busy or stressed to cook, run errands for her or even do the laundry if her hands are full with caregiving. I can almost guarantee that if you do, you and this lady will be close friends in the future regardless of the outcome of her husband’s illness.

Dear Abby: I’m a 48-year-old woman. Occasionally, I suffer from night sweats and have had a couple of hot flashes.

My husband enjoys turning on the mattress heater in our bed. He has turned my side on by mistake a few times, which caused me to roast and have an uncomfortable night. Even when he heats only his side it’s too hot for me. I wake up sweating and see him lying naked, with all his covers flipped onto me!
